SHORT CUTZ TO FAME IN FILM PAGE 5 Basketball legend inspires cancer fund-raiser Deadline set By NOEL MURPHY TEENAGER Sarah Rainbow is gearing up for this weekend’s Bounce for a Cure – a basketball marathon inspired by her ailing grandfather and Geelong legend of the sport Ron Dawson. The event, at Newtown’s YMCA basketball stadium, will raise money for brain cancer research. Mr Dawson, battling the illness, has been a stalwart of the ‘Y’ for more than 50 years as a player, administrator and coach. He was also instrumental in establishing Geelong Supercats in the late 1970s and in its elevation to the NBL. Even while seriously ill he’s still organising fund-raisers and events, including a roast for YMCA president Craig Herbert a fortnight ago. “Ron’s been fantastic,” Mr Herbert said. “He hopes to be at the bounce. I might see if I can get him working on the barbecue.” Mr Dawson’s basketball work has benefitted innumerable young players over two generations. “He’s in his seventies now and would have been involved for 55 or 60 years. He’s a life member of the YMCA for his involvement over that period,” Mr Herbert said. “We have an award, basketballer of year, that’s been going for years – he’s won that five times.” Mr Herbert said Mr Dawson had coached Sarah’s team right up until he fell ill. “One of the very good things of the YMCA club is its great history and Ron’s managed keep everyone involved. He’s been instrumental in all sort of functions, the team of the century and reunions. “Not too many people are irreplaceable but he’s one.” More information on the fund -raiser is available at facebook. com/bounceforacure.
Call for ‘action’ on city By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

GEELONG’S council has been set a deadline to revitalise the city centre. Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said council had six to 12 months. “I think council has a very limited time to make its mark in this respect,” Ms Henderson said. “If it can’t do so in the next six to 12 months, I think we need to find another way to continue the transformation of our city. Clearly the transformation has not happened quickly enough. “Let’s clean up the buildings, develop the student housing and high-density living we’ve been talking about for more than 20 years. “There is some sense of despair when we do look at what has happened to our city ... the rundown facades and empty shops.” Ms Henderson said making the city more “liveable” was one of the region’s biggest challenges. “We have to create a city where people want to live. Businesses that want to move here and set up operations are looking for their employees
and their families to live in a wonderful, liveable city.” Cr Michelle Heagney, who holds a central Geelong porfolio, said councils pending budget would allocate $8 million to the Vision II revitalisation project. “Until you have got budget allocated you can’t do much but with this budget allocation we are going to hit the ground running on 1 July,” she said. Cr Heagney blamed previous councils for the lack of action. “The previous council didn’t embrace it. The previous mayor didn’t drive it and council didn’t drive it.” Mayor Darryn Lyons this week announced the start of work on a 193-apartment development on a former St Mary’s Primary School site at the corner of Myers and Bellarine streets. The $65 million development includes a mix of private and social housing and community facilities. The project would be a “major boost” for the city’s revitalisation, Cr Lyons said. “Our plan is to more than double the number of people living in our city’s centre by 2028, to go from 4200 people to 10,000.”

Double Take THE GEELONG business community’s war on red tape took friendly fire at a breakfast forum this week. Legal eagle and serial board member Dan Simmonds was telling Geelong Business Network’s guests about a local initiative against uneccessary regulations entangling the private sector. He knew a committee had formed but struggled to recall the campaign name. “It’s got about 15 words either side of it,” Simmonds offered. The irony roused transport boss Fred Runia from his bacon. “That’s red tape!” he interjected. ALL GOOD things must run their course - and so it seems have the fortunes of the indomitable, indefatigable, un-bloodybeatable South Barwon footy club.

After years leading the pack and claiming seven of the GFL’s last nine premierships, the Swans look uncharacterisically plucked. They lost their past two games - for the first time in five years - after succumbing to the holy orders of St Mary’s and St Joseph’s, putting paid to any prospects of a flying start to season 2014 whacked by the halos, the Swans’ halo seems to have finally slipped. CATS coach Chris Scott was forced to reveal more about his private life than he might have wished at this week’s media conference. As the AFL teamed up with Disney franchise for a weekend of Star Wars-themed games, Scott admitted he was a “Star Wars nerd”. “There’s a few Star Wars nerds among Geelong supporters,” he claimed in his defence.
The one-time Brisbane Lions enforcer regained a little credibility on the subject of his favourite characters. “I love the baddies,” he declared firmly. LAST week’s Independent story about World War II Japanese spies flying over Torquay’s Point Danger, which now hosts the region’s biggest Anzac Day dawn service, stirred some interest. A litte intra-regional sacrcasm, or pehaps envy, also emerged. “Was there anything at Torquay in 1942 to spy on?” teased Greg Wane on an Independent Facebook post promoting the story. Greg should note that the Japanese still prefer the sights of Torquay to Wallington, albeit now from the comfort of tour coaches.

THE FALL-OUT from redundancies at Ford and Alcoa will impact Geelong’s housing market, a national property analyst has warned. Andrew Wilson, a senior economist with Australian Property Monitors (APM), said Geelong was historically a healthy property market but rising unemployment would eventually take its toll. “There will be a price to pay if the economy deteriorates,” Mr Wilson told the Independent. But Geelong’s lifestyle, location and resilience would cush-
ion it against any exodus of retrenched workers, he said. “It is a lifestyle choice for many, with the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast and the prices still being well below those in Melbourne. “Geelong is also a lifestyle market and people will be prepared to make sacrifices to stay there.” Mr Wilson believed the impact of historically low interest rates had now dissipated and “local supply and demand factors” were reasserting their predominant influence, particularly employment and income growth.
He pointed to the example of Wollongong where commentators feared property prices would fall drastically when it endured a similar economic blow in 2011 after a steel mill shed hundreds of jobs. State Government figures show Wollongong’s median house priced dropped from $395,000 in 2010 to $380,000 in 2012 but recovered to $430,000 in 2013. Mr Wilson hoped incentive packages for buyers would be unveiled ahead of the Victorian election at the end of November. APM reported last month that Australian capital city prices had eased across the country since the start of the year.

MPs feel fracking heat Katos and Ms Henderson this week at a Freshwater Creek Hall meeting. ABC radio’s Jon Faine will host a fracking forum next month at Winchelsea. Lock the Gate Victoria, an alliance of communities concerned about the gas industry, welcomed the consultation process, saying rural and farming people had serious concerns about the environmental and health effects. Victorian co-ordinator Chloe Aldenhoven said they were also worried about potential adverse effects on local economies. “After the release of the industrystacked Gas Market Taskforce report last year, communities began to fear
they were going to be ignored and the industry forced upon them,” Ms Aldenhoven said. Friends of the Earth’s Cam Walker also welcomed the website announcement but was anxious about sites earmarked for further drilling activities before consultations were complete. “We believe that for this consultation to be meaningful the government needs to extend the current moratorium on fracking to include all test drilling activity,” Mr Walker said. Frack Free Geelong’s Elizabeth Packett said excessive water use and possible contamination linked to the process remained prime local concerns.

POLICE are appealing for public help to find missing Lara man Murray McMillan. Mr McMillan was last seen at home on 14 April when he told a family member he would return three days later. Police believe he was heading to a friend’s property in Moonambel to go camping for a few days. The 45-year-old was reported missing on 18 April after failing to return from the trip. Police then discovered the Moonambel hut had burned down. Mr McMillan’s vehicle, a green Mitsubishi Magna sedan, was found in the Pyrenees State Forest, Warrenmang, about 4pm Monday. Police units including Search and Rescue, Dog Squad, Air Wing and local officers searched the area without success. Police and family have serious concerns for Mr McMillan, who suffers from an undisclosed medical condition. Investigators released photos of Mr McMillan along with an image of a car similar to his sedan. He is also known to frequent the You Yangs. Police are urging anyone in the state’s west to also keep a look out for him. Anyone who saw Mr McMillan should phone triple-zero immediately. Police asked anyone with other information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

MASSIVE Ghost of a chance for spooky meeting By NOEL MURPHY GHOSTS and ghouls, gore and the gruesome – welcome to the seedy side of Geelong few realise lurks behind its sandstone facades and bluestone streets. A scratch in the right places reveals spades of dead whispering undertakers, murder victim poltergeists, mischievous shop spooks, tragic baby ghosts and perplexing hauntings. Even Moorabool, the name of the city’s main thoroughfare, is an Aboriginal word for ghost – one of which haunts National Wool Museum, situated on that very street.
Which is all very appropriate, given a frightening little soiree the museum has planned. Flagged as a “night of fantastical stories, gruesome and untimely endings, frightful circumstances and unexplainable occurrences”, the night tour of the museum offers a chance to meet a ghost first-hand. “You don’t want to be there alone, at night, when it’s dark,” said a museum frightened staffer. “It starts with a feeling like, like, you aren’t alone. Then perhaps a strange noise or two and sometimes you see a figure walking along the ramps.”
The museum’s marketing department, keen to enhance the chances of making contact with the spirit, has purchased a ouija board for Melbourne out Twisted History’s torchlight tour. “We opened our collection and archive for them and they selected several objects never before on display and researched numerous stories all sure to send chills down your spine,” a museum spokesperson said. Stories and tours will vary to be suitable for all ages and constitutions, from the bravest adventurer to the meekest scaredy cat.

ANTI-FRACKING activists are pressuring local Liberal MPs as State Government seeks public input on possible coal seam gas projects. Energy and Resources Minister Michael O’Brien launched an “onshore natural gas community consultation” website at Torquay’s Surf Coast Shire offices on Wednesday. The launch marked the first stage of a “community and stakeholder engage program” promised last year. Frack Free Geelong campaigners have targeted state South Barwon MP Andrew Katos and federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson over the issue.
Fracking is a controversial mining process in which liquid is injected at high pressure into underground rocks to fracture fissures for gas extraction. Opponents argue process can contaminate groundwater. Exporter Lakes Oil conducted geological tests between Geelong and Anglesea and along the coast but last year but later told the Independent it had lost interest in fracking the area. State Government, despite a moratorium on fracking, has issued a new permit allowing two companies to explore opportunities around Portland and Casterton. NDIA ‘makes our day’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN “THIS is a great day for Geelong.” That was the recurring theme emphasised by Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Premier Denis Napthine and assistant social services Minister Mitch Fifield at the launch of the National Disability Insurance Agency on Wednesday. Dr Napthine described the launch as a “revolution for people with disabilities”. Mr Abbott said it was a “watershed in our society”. The premier’s voice broke, as it has in the past, when he welcomed the launch both as a politician and as the parent of an adult person with a disability.
Premier launch emotion “It puts the person with a disability in charge. The person with a disability has the power and opportunity to get the services they want and need,” Dr Napthine said. “Geelong has a long and great culture of compassion and care for people with a disability going back for decades. “Recognition that people with disability are an integral part of our society and giving them opportunity in the greater Geelong society. “Geelong has been one of the in-
novators and leaders in this area. Having the headquarters here will benefit from the experience of Geelong as a community that does provide opportunities for people with disability.” Dr Napthine said the NDIA would generate up to $35 million a year for the local economy. The NDIA would also benefit from co-location with the TAC and the yetto-be relocated WorkCover agency to create a “centre of excellence”, he said. Mr Abbott said the NDIA would

A GEELONG filmmaker is forging her own entry into the industry with a short-film festival. Zoe Hollingsworth’s Short Cutz will be televised as a six-part series on Channel 31 in September. The festival was a rare opportunity for local filmmakers to gain exposure, she said. “I gave myself the challenge because I don’t like being bored and want to get into the media industry. Something like this will get me that experience,” Ms Hollingsworth explained. “I know that short filmmakers need a way of showing their work because it’s difficult to find a platform for films, so I thought I would cast a wide net with a minimum of criteria. I’m looking for films under 10 minutes “They don’t have to be films created especially for this festival. I hope we’ll unearth some gems and give them a fresh airing.” Ms Hollingsworth said she would put together a judging panel of local filmmakers and include a public vote for the winner. Categories included best film, director and story, she said. Ms Hollingsworth had five films lined up so far but said the only limit to the number of entries to feature in the series would be the airtime available. Entries close on 28 May at the Facebook page of Ms Hollingsworth’s Zeeduchess Studios.

offer a “better way of living” for almost half a million Australians. “We want to ensure everyone in our society has the opportunity to reach his or her potential,” he said. “People with disabilities should be in the heart of our lives and they should be in the centre of our society. “Geelong’s had some downs as well as some ups recently and I hope this is a good day for the great city of Geelong.” Senator Fifield said the NDIA was “core government business and we are fully committed to the full roll out and to learn the lessons from the trial sites”.

WHAT’S black and white and sends Cats fans nuts? Hold on, better make that white and white. At least, that’s the colouring of a magpie that wildlife photographer Danielle Bamforth snapped at Newcomb recently. And it’s a one in a million magpie, she said. “I’d never seen a white magpie in my life and I was quite excited to get the opportunity to see one in real life, let alone to photograph one,” Ms Bamforth told the Independent. “I have an obsession with magpies. I love to photograph them. “They’re such beautiful, intelligent birds. I have several friendly magpies that visit me daily.” One young maggie who hangs

She is in fantastic condition and looks to be surviving quite well.” Ms Bamford learned about the albino magpie from an online birder friend. “He told me it has been living in the exact same spot for around four years now and the locals know the maggie quite well,” she said. She declined to reveal the rare bird’s precise location other than somewhere near Wilsons Rd for fear of drawing the magpie unwanted attention.

Dr Di Stefano said the condition was related to a failure of the immune system with a “complicated chemical pathological basis”. He said CFS/ME sufferers often experienced a wide range of symptoms, so they visited multiple specialists who missed seeing the complete picture. “It takes time to look at the whole person,” Dr Di Stefano said. “People feel depressed because tests are not showing up

CHRONIC fatigue syndrome is spreading around Geelong, according to a local support group. Chronic Fatigue/ME Support group’s Sue Collins said more people were battling the “extremely debilitating illness”. Attendance at the group’s monthly meetings had grown during its 14 years but many other victims were undiagnosed, she said. “There’s still a lack of knowledge and information, which can make diagnosis difficult for medical practitioners and understanding of this very complex condition challenging. “This can lead to sufferers feeling quite isolated and withdrawing. It’s not uncommon to hear of people who’ve lost their jobs, lifestyle and connections with friends and family who also struggle to understand what to do and how to help the people they love. “Sufferers and their carers can feel so alone and mental health and clinical depression also often make an impact.” Ms Collins said the support group focussed on raising awareness of chronic fatigue and myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) to assure sufferers they were “not alone”. Local GP Dr Joe Di Stefano, who originally diagnosed Ms Collins, said environmental factors such as pollutants, drugs, stress, smoking, diets and “life-

BUCKETS to a man who breathed loudly and firmly down the back of my neck at Torquay’s Anzac Dawn Service. My minute of silence was more like 60 seconds of disgust. Suffered In Silence, Grovedale BUCKETS to children seen climbing a cenotaph and picking at wreaths on Sunday morning. The lack of respect, especially so close to Anzac Day, was abysmal. Too bad you were gone by the time I got there – you would have been given the telling-off of a lifetime. Disgusted, Ocean Grove BUCKETS to a store in another suburb where I was treated with appalling disrespect. Asking for a discount on an old item isn’t making your “life hard”, it’s just seeking a bargain. Keep your opinions to yourself, not share them with everybody in earshot. Won’t Return, Waurn Ponds BOUQUETS to Noel Murphy for his story on Japanese wartime activities over our shores and congratulations to the Independent’s editor for publishing it. The story supplied clues about the surveillance of Melbourne that, to this point, many of our contemporaries have not accepted. Clive Dennis, Belmont

Buckets to a business whose workers failed to secure the item properly. Lucky Driver, Bell Post Hill BOUQUETS to the honest, caring person who handed in my handbag to security at Westfield Geelong on Monday. My handbag contained my purse, phone, glasses and lots of other things. Your kindness was much-appreciated. Thank You, Drumcondra BOUQUETS to St Jude for prayers answered. THE CONTINUAL provision of community based not-for-profit aged health care seems to have been destined for oblivion from some time ago. The generic reply to hundreds of letters and emails protesting the selling of Portarlington’s Ann Nichol House, Portarlington indicates the Victorian Government is either ill-informed, inert or intends to wash its hands of its responsibility to the aged. The rot apparently set in late in 2006 when Bellarine Community Health (BCH) filed for the windup of its incorporated status, which had required a quorum of at least 50 members, or 10 per cent of members, to approve policy variations such as major changes to agreed policies. Members numbered 1079 in September 2010, so at least 50 were required to form a quorum and 75 per cent had to approve any change. But limited-entity status meant BCH required only simplified obligations for financial reporting, quorums, major decision-making and business operations. Now a BCH quorum of just five people can make decisions such as the Ann Nichol House sale. The “independent and community-controlled” body, as the minister described it, has closed Point Lonsdale’s Coorabin aged care facility and is negotiating the sale of Ann Nichol House, all without the auspices or permission of our community. These are treasured assets that were established and maintained by our community. BCH should organise a forum to explain its intentions before selling Ann Nichol House. ON 2 March Save Ocean Grove Park Again (SOGPA) formed after a public meeting to represent community desire to prevent transfer of the park from Trust for Nature to City of Greater Geelong. When it was announced on 14 March that the transfer talks had ceased, the group arranged a second public meeting to inform the community about ownership of the park and the status of its proposed performance space building. Shortly thereafter SOGPA disbanded. At the second meeting on 23 March, attendees asked many questions about the performance space. Members of Ocean Grove Park Committee answered some but many outstanding questions remained, most of which were presumed to be answered in the committee’s business case for the performance space. The committee was asked at the meeting to post the business case to the committee’s website and to address the list of questions, which were recorded on a whiteboard. All in attendance agreed another meeting was needed for the questions to be answered. We now understand that the committee has decided it might not attend the next meeting. However, as the meeting convenors we will honour our promise to hold a follow-up meeting 2pm Sunday at Ocean Grove Primary School Hall. Everybody is welcome. Best hospital sites for sale WHAT is the likelihood of an optimally-sized-andlocated northern suburbs hospital given reports that the Napthine Government is in the process of selling off $420 million of public land, mostly housing disused schools?
More to the point and perhaps explained by the sales to developers, why hasn’t a real-deal hospital blueprint been put in place rather than a clinic makeover? Of the three vacant school sites, Norlane Secondary College, adjacent to a substantial power provider, would seem contradictory to meeting a hospital’s core aim. The Corio South Primary School site, ideal to add to the Northern Bay College Goldsworthy trade training precinct, has no hope of achieving that logical extension given TAFE funding cutbacks. All this leaves the Flinders Peak Secondary College site ticking all the boxes for a substantive hospital, as it also does, ironically, for a quick sale and an ensuing developer’s bonanza. Again, and failing a Daniel-Andrews-opposition alternative to what is essentially a state funding issue, the northern suburbs are heading for another at best bottom-drawer outcome at the abysmally located Norlane Waterworld nexus. Baaaa-d way to go I ATTENDED my first stock sale at City of Greater Geelong’s North Geelong saleyards. It was an appalling experience. Under a warm sun I noted a yard of sheep, one lying in clear physical distress. The auctioneers and buyers did not share my concern. The buyer of the lot shrieked that he didn’t want to pay for two sheep that were, in his experienced view, on their last legs. His request was granted. No attention or treatment was given to the clearly traumatised, dying sheep. Why was it left alone in pain to die. Was it the cost of a bullet or an injection? Why wasn’t it removed from public gaze given the distressing nature of the situation? The City has much to answer for regarding its appalling lack of respect for animals unfortunately in its care. Michael J Gamble Belmont
Choosing to challenge I READ with intrigue the many events reported in newspapers, social media and other forms of communication. We live in an extraordinary world that is so diverse and filled with wonders yet the focus of most people is mainly the problems affecting them or occurring around them. When we can see past these events we are in a no-win situation because they occurred in the past and, until a time machine is invented, we can’t change what happened. This is an example of being trapped in a mentality in which so many are stuck. I too was once a victim until I realised there is a choice that we can all make. Some people do not have their issues to deal with, and some are far worse than others, but a better option is to consider what we can control and seek a solution rather than get caught up in something we can’t change. What sort of lesson does this teach the members of next generation? Is it infecting their minds and teaching them to moan about problems rather than face them with the intent of overcoming the challenges? Everyone is a teacher in life and we have the ability to be positive in all we do to lead the next generation to greatness. The choice is up to you. Phil Hunt Highton

FIRED UP: Dragon will play songs from its back-catalogue of hits at GPAC next week.
Band’s Dragon out classic hits
GOOD songs have a happy knack of longevity, as Todd Hunter will happily attest. Playing at Christchurch’s Great Kiwi Beer Festival in March, Hunter and his Dragon bandmates had 15,000 people jumping, rocking and singing out the verses to the band’s anthemic hits. “And not a one of them over 25,” he proudly stated. But the 62-year-old muso said the real ambition for any musician should simply be playing in a working band, not fame and celebrity. “That’s all rubbish – it can destroy lives. To be a working musician is the reward,” Hunter said. Dragon, a legendary KiwiAussie rock outfit of the ’70s and ’80s, will belt out its hits at Geelong Performing Arts Centre on 9 May. Hunter laughed at the age of the band, describing its latest tour as “an archaeological dig”. But he was a little more se-
rious about the timelessness of Dragon’s music. “The songs are quite durable. You can do anything with them. “In our New Zealand cathedral and churches tour last November we played them acoustically, even with broken harmoniums. The guys I play with are very musically literate.” Dragon’s east-coast Trilogy tour marks the latest in the band’s ‘Phoenix’ incarnation, following its ‘Young Years’ of 1973 to 1979 and ‘Glory Years’ of 1982 to 1998, tragically truncated by the death of frontman Marc Hunter. Kiwi singer Mark Williams has taken over the role, with Hunter on bass, Bruce Reid on guitar and Pete Drummond on drums. Together they play Dragon anthems like April Sun in Cuba, Celebrate, Dreams of Ordinary Men, Are You Old Enough? Magic, Cry and Still in Love. Hunter reminisced about the on-stage power of Dragon at its peak.
“The band in the ’80s made a huge sound,” he recalled. “Tommy Emmanuel, Doane Perry and Alan Mansfield gave it incredible oomph and class. Whether it was at a pub in Jindabyne, where the sheer volume and intensity flattened the crowd on to the back wall, or in huge arenas in Europe to crowds of 100,000, it was an awesome outfit. “One of the most memorable shows was to a crowd of 12,000 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre that sang Rain at the top of their voices.” The spine-tingling audience choruses are almost typical of contemporary Dragon concerts – 40 years after Hunter founded the band. “It’s an amazing thing to be in your 60s and smashing through a great bunch of songs and to look out at 35,000 kids leaping up and down and singing songs that were written decades before they were born,” he said. “It’s a great way to grow old disgracefully.”

Sandstone Cafe’s birthday festivity SANDSTONE Cafe has celebrated its third birthday recently and owner Simon Parrott thanks loyal customers for supporting his Grovedale venue. He invites diners who have yet to experience the quality food and service from the suburban “restaurant disguised as a cafe” to visit. “Geelong people are embracing the growing suburban food and wine culture – we foster this culture at Sandstone Cafe,” Simon says. Simon celebrates the cafe’s contemporary Australian menu with a seafood specialty.

Have you had your skin checked lately? $30 could save your life
$30 checks to detect cancer SKIN cancer is Australia’s mostcommon form of cancer, affecting two in three Australians before the age of 70. But Australian Skin Face Body plastic surgeon Ian Holten says more than 95 per cent of skin cancers can be successfully treated if found early. “If you get it early you can get a cure,” he advises. Mr Holten recommends seeing an expert for determining risks and for advice on early detection. “Skin cancers rarely hurt and are much more frequently seen than felt,” he explains. “They can occur on parts of the body not usually exposed to the sun, such as between toes, under toenails and on the soles of the feet. Also, contrary to popular belief, not all skin cancers start out as moles. “Having a full-body skin check every year is easy and simple, taking just 20 minutes. It’s just one of those things you need to do.” Australian Skin Face Body has a team of doctors experienced in skin checks. Each check with an experienced GP costs only $30 after the Medicare rebate. Mr Holten’s skin cancer prevention tips are:

Kouta shares key to health IF ANYBODY has the right look to promote fitness and body image, it’s former Carlton great Anthony Koutoufides. Known for his power, athleticism and fitness, ‘Kouta’ kept himself in shape after retiring from football in 2007 but three years later he was suffering fatigue and lacking direction. The football champion realised he faced a new kind of challenge, so he travelled to the US where he was introduced to a Herbalife nutritional energy supplement, which produced positive results. Fitness coach Craig Morrison met the AFL legend after a one-off football match at Deer Park in 2012. They shared a passion for health and wellbeing, so when Craig tried the supplements he was also hooked. The pair teamed up to run Kouta Fit Club in Carlton, encouraging healthy and active lifestyles. Now they have expanded the operation to Geelong. Craig said participants in the month-long course at Carlton lost 5.1kg on average. The fitness guru says the program sets achievable goals in a real team atmosphere where participants encourage and support each other.

When the sessions are over participants share a nutritional drink together. “After being heavily involved in the industry for the past decade I started to understand that digestive health is the key to well-being and these products are a major contributor to ultimate health and fat loss,’’ Craig says. “I’m just so lucky that every day I wake up and do what I love.” Anyone interested in joining the Kouta Fit Club program can phone Craig on 0405 080 633.

CHILDREN’S feet and legs have some common observations and issues that often cause concern for parents. Sports podiatrist Dr David Kavanagh, of Foot & Leg Pain Clinics, can clarify some of these. According to Dr Kavanagh, the appearance of flat feet are generally not something to worry about, contrary to popular belief. “However, if there is associated pain, balance issues or excessive rolling inward of the ankles, parents should seek professional assistance,” he advises. The incidence of in-toeing, known as being ‘pigeon toed’, or out-toeing, also called ‘duck feet’, can affect the capacity of children to run, jump and balance well. “These issues may be assisted during a child’s developmental years and should be checked,” Dr Kavanagh says. Growing pains are common and often due to overstrain of the growth plates of growing bones. Dr Kavanagh advises having the exact nature of the pain determined as soon as possible. Shin pain in children can involve medial tibial stress syndrome, anterior leg pain or compartment syndrome, all commonly referred to as shin splints. “Any shin pain should be

Heights of sewing service HEIGHTS Sewing Centre’s Ken Wilks has worked with sewing machines for 60 years. His company operates the Geelong region’s only dedicated sewing machine service centre, servicing customers from the Bellarine Peninsula to the South Australian border. Ken has witnessed extraordinary changes in sewing machines since he joined and gradually assumed control of the family business. “When I first started off as an apprentice I was putting hand-and-treadle machines together,” he says.
“Now the bigger machines are computerised and it’s a totally different world.” Heights Sewing Centre’s technicians travel the world from Japan to Scandinavia learning the intricacies of their sewing machine’s craft. “It is a very specialised field,” Ken explains. “A sewing machine is probably the most intricate piece of machinery you have in the house.” Heights repairs all brands of machines, from old treadlestyle to the latest quilting and embroidery machines. It focuses on quality service and
value for money, providing all sewing needs from retail sales through to after sale support, sewing classes and machine repairs. Heights boasts good, oldfashioned customer service while priding itself on its knowledge of contemporary sewing trends and machines - as well as Geelong’s most comprehensive range of haberdashery and trims. Heights Sewing Centre Sewing Sales & Service is at 174-176 Pakington St, Geelong West, phone 5229 3558. More information is available at heightsewing.com.au.

Help with disputes over utilities By Sam Hawkins, Barwon Community Legal Service BARWON Community Legal Service has seen many people experiencing problems with electricity, gas or water companies. Their problems have included receiving bills from the wrong provider, debt collectors chasing them for wrongful bills and threats of disconnection when a provider had made a mistake. The first step to resolve these disputes is contacting the utility
company. It’s good practice to make a note of who you speak to, the time and date and to ask for a reference number. If the matter is unresolved you can request a referral to the company’s internal dispute resolution department, which deals with complaints and problems. If the complaint remains unresolved you can lodge a complaint with the Energy and Water Ombudsman Victoria (EWOV) for companies participating in the
EWOV scheme, which covers most retailers and distributors. The EWOV deals with complaints including billing disputes and disconnection issues. EWOV tries to reach a resolution fair and reasonable to both sides. More information is available at ewov.com.au. Appointments to access the free, independent services of Barwon Community Legal Service are available by 1300 430 599.

SKODA still lags in perception in the minds of many Australian car buyers which is a shame because this week’s road test car, a Skoda Octavia Elegance station wagon, gives a quality Euro vehicle for a pretty modest price. Indeed, the sort of money that normally only gets a car from Japan or South Korea lets drivers sit in a European machine, albeit one from the Czech Republic rather than Germany. A Skoda doesn’t give the prestige of an Audi or Volkswagen, with which it shares most of its outof-sight components, but the Octavia does give that lovely sold feel that many admire in a German car. That’s because the all-new Skoda Octavia shares the MQB platform that’s used in several of the most recent Audi and Volkswagen models. This platform is an immensely clever design that not only gives the body significantly greater rigidity, but also strips up to 100 kilograms from the mass of the Octavia. Incidentally, the Audi A3, a close relative to the all-new Skoda Octavia, has just taken out the title of World Car of the Year for 2014. There’s nothing to get excited about in the midsize model from the Czech Republic. The Skoda Octavia is unashamedly aimed at people who buy sensible, practical cars. At the front there are hints of Audi’s latest squared off lines, which is no bad thing. At the back there’s the sort of squared-off Golf wagon shape that’s likely to be timeless. The test car had the turbo-diesel unit that produces 320 Nm between 1750 and 3000 rpm meaning that most drivers will be running with the engine at its maximum efficiency almost all of the time. Two turbo-petrol engines are also on offer. With capacities of 1.4 and 1.8 litres, their peak power outputs are 103, 132 and 110 kilowatts. Six-speed manual and seven-speed DSG transmissions are installed, the choice varying from model to model. Our diesel wagon had the six-speed dual-clutch DSG which is enough for the sort of torque this diesel puts out. Skoda’s interiors are all about space and practicality. Octavia isn’t a big car but has interior room similar to cars a full size larger. There’s room for two six-footers sitting behind one another without the person in the driving seat having to move their seat further forward than normal. Skoda Octavia’s back seat is better suited to three children for width as adults will tend to rub hips and shoulders. The luggage area is impressive in its volume and usability. The tailgate is full width to give maximum access to the area and boot depth is exceptionally good. The boot mat is reversible, with carpet on one side and rubber on the other. The seatback has a 60/40 split fold. There are tie-down hooks on the boot floor and plastic clips on the upper surfaces at the side from which to hang supermarket plastic bags and the like. This Skoda has a really clever feature; small fold-

BIG AND PRACTICAL: The all-new Skoda Octavia Elegance station wagon provides European motoring at an Asian price. ing plastic pieces with Velcro on the bottom that can stick to the carpet in any position to wedge things into place. All Skoda Octavias have a five-star ANCAP crash safety rating. Crash prevention and/or minimisation uses the latest in European design that has the Octavia looking ahead for possible danger, advising the driver of problems, then taking over to brake automatically if need be. The Skoda didn’t appear to be as quiet as the others using the same underpinnings (Audi and VW). You certainly wouldn’t call the Octavia noisy, but it didn’t have the full-on serenity they provide. Handling is good thanks to the solid platform, with a nice feel through the steering. The big Czech has an easy going nature and made light of harsh Australian country roads. The latest generation diesels from the Volkswagen Group are impressive units and it didn’t surprise us that fuel consumption on the open road and motorways was generally in the low fives. Around town this rose to a still acceptable six to eight litres per 100 kilometres. The latest Skoda Octavia is all-new from the ground up and continues the long time design that gives maximum interior space with excellent occupant comfort. It has been reduced in price compared with the model it supersedes and is being promoted as providing Asian value and European image.

IT’S THE personal touch that sets Keleman Motors apart. Gary Keleman has been in the business since 1982, so he must be doing something right. His care and attention to detail has enhanced his hard-won reputation in the car repair trade. The personal service includes a drop off and pick up service to the city. Gary is known as a Mazda specialist but his tried and true slogan, ‘Anything on any car’, sums up his approach. “We do all major and minor repairs, including exhaust, brakes, clutches and suspension,” Gary explains. “Plus we do the full range of upgrades and servicing, including air-conditioner re-gassing.” Gary and Mazda go back a long way, including his top qualifications in the repair and servicing of the famous rotary engine. Gary uses only genuine parts in his new-car repair and servicing work. “This way our customers can be sure their factory warranties are not affected.” He says customers should be able to receive dealer level service without paying dealer level prices. “We’re always happy to give a quote so the customer knows exactly what they are up for,” he says. Gary’s recently renovated workshop boasts the latest in diagnostic and scanner equipment. “We’re proud of the quality of all work we undertake and our competitive rates.” Keleman Motors is at shop 3, 13 Crown St, South Geelong, phone 5229 9555.
GEELONG Brake and Clutch offers expert services to both retail and trade customers, specialising in the supply of brake, clutch and suspension parts. Denis and Lesley Williams and their team of dedicated staff have been operating the business since 2006 at 8 Dowsett St, South Geelong. The expert team of staff possess extensive product knowledge for all makes and models, including off-road and heavy-duty vehicles. Geelong Brake and Clutch can conduct regular servicing to manufacturers’ specifications as well as completing work on brakes, clutches and suspension for all cars and 4WDs. Full workshop facilities provide ample equipment for services and repairs to vehicles, including machining of rotors, fly wheels, calliper overhauling and brake hoses, made on premises. Customers with vehicles that go into the workshop have the option to take advantage of the company’s transportation service back home or to their workplace. Geelong Brake and Clutch also offers free pickup and delivery to the trade. Retail and trade customers can be assured they’re in good hands with Geelong Brake and Clutch because the team boasts more than 100 years of combined experience. Denis’ 35 years’ experience working in the trade around Geelong has given him a wealth of knowledge, along with staff who have also been in the business for many years. Denis and Lesley describe customer service as “the main aim” of Geelong Brake and Clutch. Anyone who feels their vehicle needs attention can request a booking by phoning 5222 7411 or via a web booking form available at the business’ website, www.brakeclutch.com.au.

Illegal irewood cutting is unsustainable, destroys habitat and poses public safety risks. The Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) licences commercial irewood suppliers who collect irewood safely, sustainably and legally. Before you purchase irewood, ask whether the seller either has a commercial irewood licence or has otherwise sourced the irewood legally. If they don’t have a licence or refuse to answer, report it to the number below. You can anonymously report suspicious activity, including anyone you see felling or harvesting a tree outside irewood collection areas, to the DEPI Customer Service Centre on 136 186 (quote Operation Trident). www.depi.vic.gov.au Customer Service Centre 136 186

IndySport Geelong’s coaches ‘tweak’ game plan By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG’S coaching panel went back to school this week in hope of teaching Richmond a Sunday MCG lesson. Chris Scott this week was strong on learning from the Cats’ mistakes against Port Adelaide last Sunday, leading to the side’s first 2014 defeat. “We made some strategic errors going into the game as a coaching group that we’ll learn from,” he admitted. “Even in our good wins there are some things in retrospect we felt we could have done better. “Some of those cost us, particularly early in the game (against Port Adelaide), the way we set up the game, the match ups we went in with. “I still feel in review that the game was going pretty well. We started the game well, we were on top for big parts of the first half but we couldn’t convert. “It’s amazing how the complexion of the game can change when you take your chances and get a bit of a lead on the scoreboard.” Scott insisted the coaches were accountable not only to each other but also to the players. “We’re still working through exactly what our best footy looks like and we have some good players to come back into our team. “It wasn’t necessarily a step backwards (but) there were so many things we did poorly that we aim to rectify this week. “A few little tweaks and a few adjustments in our preparation hopefully will make a big difference.” Scott dismissed any notion that Richmond was a side “under the pump” and presented a lesser challenge. “It makes no difference,” he said. “Are they under the pump? It’s irrelevant to me and irrelevant to our footy club, except that I guess you assume they’re going to come out with everything they’ve got and play their best.
ON THE BALL: Travis Varcoe and Joel Selwood had 21 and 17 possessions respectively in the Picture: REG RYAN loss against Port Adelaide last weekend. 118672 “Professional athletes and clubs should be that that every week, whether you’re under the pump or not. “It’s almost become a sport now to kick the side that’s down in a week. (But) it changes so quickly. “We’d be fools if we thought that were going to play an opposition that’s not going to try their hardest and give up when the heat’s on. “We’re not going in with that approach
at all. We’re expecting them to play at their absolute best and we need to prepare for that or we get beaten. “I’m sure Richmond will get a bit of momentum at times this year and play some really good footy. “We have to be ready for when they play their good footy on the weekend, that we’re prepared and equipped to deal with that.”
Surf’s up for salmon fun ANGLERS enjoyed some outstanding surf fishing along the coast last weekend despite big waves. John Mole and I started late on Anzac Day, eventually fishing below Lorne’s hospital where salmon attacked our lures. Most small, so we moved to Wye River where we caught salmon to 1.5kg and reasonable numbers of couta until the tide dropped too far. Terry Martin also caught the same species Wye River, with his best salmon 2.4kg. Grant Forbes found salmon on the beach at Breamlea, managing a dozen or so to 1kg on high tide. Grant used lures but another angler nearby caught a similar number of fish on red and white surf poppers. Bay anglers began taking consistent captures of quality snapper, mostly after dark. The area from Point Wilson to the quarries was worthwhile, although the inner-harbour could be worth fishing in the lead up to this month’s full moon. Daniel Shore fished the shallow grass beds off Hermsley for a bag-limit catch of squid early Monday morning. The he moved to the spoil grounds where he caught a dozen quality flathead all taken on soft plastics. Pike were taken on lure from the rocks at North Shore. Guy Stephens landed a pair around 75cm on a blue 25g Sluk lure. Whiting conditions were less than ideal but some anglers managed baglimit catches close in at Bird Rock and toward Swan Bay’s entrance. Paul Jeffries fishing the Swan Bay entrance after dark when his reel soon screamed off with a good fish. Fifteen minutes later he boated a 6.3kg snapper but was interrupted admiring his catch when he successfully hooked up a second fish of 6.6kg. Kingfish captures slowed down but fish should still be available inside The Rip on live baits and knife jigs. Chris Pitman and Daniel Baden fished in 20m with Powerbait to catch

salmon and trout at Lake Bullen Merrir last weekend. Troller using downriggers set generally at 15m and bait anglers fishing deep with baits such as bluebait or pilchard fillets also caught fish. Harry Welsh landed two nice trout at West Barwon Reservoir while fishing the right hand end of the main wall. Both fish took a black and gold Daiwa Double Clutch lure. Neil Batten also caught trout at the reserve while using mudeye under a float. Fly angler Paul Green reported catching fish from 1kg to 1.5kg at Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree. Paul had the most success on a Mrs Simpson fly fished exceptionally slow late in the evenings. Bait anglers have done well with mudeyes suspended under a float in shallow water. Moorabool Reservoir hosted few anglers but remained a viable destination for redfin and trout. Successful bait anglers have used either scrub worms or small freshwater yabbies. Michael Evans was rewarded for his extensive lure-casing exploits at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir with a magnificent 50cm redfin, which weighed over 2kg. The big fish was one of several he caught on Fish Arrow soft plastics. Lake Bullen Merri should be worth fishing this weekend from boats with Powerbait or bluebait in around 20m, while trollers will need downriggers. Send reports and photos to info@ raylongtackle.com.au or visit Brian at Ray Long’s Fishing World, 105 Shannon Ave, Manifold Heights.
Our Rangers only unbeaten regional team GEELONG Rangers remain the only topflight regional soccer team in Victorian State League competition with a 100 per cent record after a feisty win over Essendon United. In an afternoon of high drama, Rangers dug deep to record a 2-1 away win over Essendon with second-half goals from coach Andy Ingham and a brilliant solo effort by Evan Black.
Lars Halse went close for the Rangers in the opening exchanges and Troy Hardy looped a header over the crossbar and hit wide minutes later. Luckily for Rangers, Essendon’s poor finishing let the Geelong side off the hook. Rangers eventually bossed the game but fell behind when Jordan Swaney gave away a penalty just before the turn and the home side converted.
Rangers pressed forward in numbers after the break and Ingham was sent on his way after some slick passing from his teammates. From an acute angle he drilled the ball home to level. Black then secured the victory with a thunder shot inside the post to make it four wins from four starts. Rangers now host Northern Roosters at Myers Reserve on Saturday.
