Albury Wodonga’s largest circulating newspaper

Sweet sting of success The work of the Border Medical Recruitment Taskforce in attracting doctors to the region has been praised by AlburyCity, who subsequently cut vaccination clinics from the budget. TURN TO PAGE 3 FOR DETAILS ALBURYCITY and City of Wodonga came together on Monday night to discuss the future of the twin towns, with eyes set firmly on Albury Wodonga Health.

Councils cuddle By KRYSTEN MANUEL IN THE face of recent comments regarding Albury and Wodonga councils not communicating enough, Albury and Wodonga councillors met on Monday night to discuss working together currently and in the future. “I don’t think the community are aware of what we are doing,” AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack said. “So I decided, with my Wodonga counterpart, to formalise that discussion and have a meeting with councillors only present to discuss what we’re currently doing and what we intend to do in the future for both of our cities. “It was about being able to touch base, to put some relevance to the current relationship we have. As councillors we needed to draw that line in the sand again and say ‘this is what we currently do together,’ which is quite substantial.”

City of Wodonga mayor Rodney Wangman supported Cr Mack in saying while meetings between councils were not new – they are held quarterly with the vision of having all councillors present twice a year, with meetings scheduled for more urgent issues there’s always room for improvement. “When you have new councillors on both sides it’s good to reaffirm policy co-operation right down to practicality issues,” he said. “What do we hope to achieve from these outcomes? Clearly some of those items are Albury Wodonga Health, the future of high-speed rail, the alliance of the councils of the Upper Murray, local procurement, then we get down to what I call ‘rats and mice’ type issues that are fundamentally important to our community – all of us expect Albury Wodonga is perceived as one city, so morally and practically we op-

“We need to take the lead on that particular project and it’s a significant undertaking – we’re talking from $300 million and up to $500 million. We need to make sure we future-proof our cities.” Current areas both councils work together on include the waste service for Albury Wodonga and other regional shires, Murray Tourism Board, Bonegilla Register, cultural events planning, Digital Economy Strategy, Albury Wodonga Business Employment Survey, Building Better Regions funding and Aboriginal employment. “They’re just some things we do, that’s not withstanding supporting applications that either city will put in for different regional facilities,” Cr Mack said. “Wodonga Council supported us when we made submissions to the Federal Government for the Albury

erate like that, legislatively however, the reality is we are two separate local government areas.” Cr Mack said one of the more pressing main projects the councils intended to continue working with into the future was that of Albury Wodonga Health. “Albury Wodonga Health is a significant project that, in the next five to 10 years, we need to encourage the government – federal and states - to consider a significant spend in that space,” he said. “Currently Albury Wodonga Health is under pressure – the life of the Wodonga Hospital is three to four years. “We need to go to our federal health ministers and state health ministers together and say ‘we need to get fasttracked in relation to new opportunities for our hospital’.

Regional Art Gallery and the Lavington Sports Ground Precinct, and we’ve also submitted applications on their behalf in relation to Baranduda Sportsfield and Gateway Precinct.” Cr Wangman said the meeting was a good opportunity to put speculation to rest that Albury and Wodonga Councils ‘don’t talk.’ “While there have been people in our community that assert that our councils don’t co-operate, the evidence is there to prove that is not the case,” he said. “I find these meetings to be very pro-active and very practical and the take-aways are relevant. They provide opportunity for reflection and aspiration and it is to the betterment of this area. “While it is the 17th largest city in Australia, I suspect we see ourselves as heading towards the top 10.”

White fights a killer By KRYSTEN MANUEL STAFF at Wodonga Real Estate joined together to ‘Unite in White’ last week and join the fight against ovarian cancer. Organiser and Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group (BOCAG) committee member Narelle Robinson derived the idea to dress in white and collect donations from a similar campaign by Witchery. “I saw it in the paper on Sunday and I thought ‘we should do that as a business’,” she said. “The money was mainly raised through the people at work and we asked anyone that came in if they’d like to throw some money in the tin.” The money raised will go to BOCAG. Having only been together for two years, the group has already raised around $80,000 for research. “We have meetings once a month,” Ms Robinson said. “We recently had the Kelsey Walk last month. We also had an art show and I’m doing a winery tour to Ciccanti’s in October - they’re good fun things to do. “We also sell secondhand books at Wodonga Plant Farm - that’s raised $16,000 - $17,000 so far. “And for the Caulfield Cup this year at Wodonga Racecourse we’re having a charity race. Last year it was a big success, we raised $13,000. “We do all these things that really do go towards a great cause.” Ms Robinson became involved with the charity after the sudden and devastating passing of a friend.

Border health win

Indigo set for low rate increase

By KRYSTEN MANUEL IN LIGHT of the recent AlburyCity Draft Budget, AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack has named the future vaccination clinic cut as a sign of outstanding work by the Border Medical Recruitment Taskforce (BMRT). “The positive thing out of all of this is that we’ve seen a significant increase in GPs across the Border region,” he said. “Clearly mothers would rather take their children to a GP for vaccinations because they get ongoing service and they can take them there for a variety of issues. “We have an even spread (of GPs) now whereas 10 years ago we didn’t have that. “We have, in partnership with Border GP Recruiting and Albury Wodonga Health, provided a good outcome for the community. It’s a sign of the times and we’ll continue to do that.” Cr Mack says AlburyCity is one of the few NSW councils to operate vaccination clinics, with Albury experiencing a 54 per cent drop in clients since the clinic began. Local GPs running a vaccination service are operating at approximately 83 per cent. “Ultimately we need to be responsible with people’s money,” he said. “We’re not taking away something people are using. (Just) 16 per cent of immunisations are done by council and it’s costing us over $200,000 a year. “The argument that the disadvantaged will be further dis-

Thanks to more GPs in the region, AlburyCity has cut the vaccination clinic from the budget and moved the service to Murrumbidgee Health. advantaged is not appropriate because they can still access the service when Murrumbidgee Health advertises it at the community centres.” The BMRT was formed eight years ago by like-minded medical community members and citizens of Albury, and chaired by Dr Scott Giltrap in a response to the practical and economic need to have more doctors in the region. “When we started in general practice alone there were only three general practices taking new patients in the community,” Border Medical Recruitment Taskforce executive officer Denise Klemm said. “When we last examined it officially three or four years ago there were only three not

taking - we stopped examining the numbers after that because people were accessing doctors easily by then. “It was important for general health but also for economic development. If the town is going to look at attracting industry or people moving to the community, they’re certainly not going to come if they can’t get medical treatment.” Ms Klemm said their aims had basically been achieved to make BMRT redundant in five years. “We’re currently in a position where we’ve got increased numbers of both general practice specialists and specialists in other areas as well,” she said. “The hospital is now employing more specialists as

well, so I think the whole thing generates its own momentum - we have the cancer centre now. So things have got a momentum of their own now and we’ve made ourselves redundant, which is excellent, that was our plan.” But Ms Klemm said the success was owed to a team effort from many parties, but with particular thanks to both Albury and Wodonga councils. “It’s not just one person that does this, it was everybody’s effort,” she said. “The support of AlburyCity Council and City of Wodonga Council was outstanding and I think that was the significant difference between us and other communities - we had the full support of both councils.”

INDIGO Shire’s draft budget for 2014-’15 keeps the council in a strong financial position, with sustainable levels of borrowing. The draft budget was adopted by council today for public comment and Indigo mayor Bernard Gaffney said it was pleasing to note that the Victorian Auditor-General, in his latest report, again put Indigo in the financial low-risk category. “The task of trying to accommodate the many requests across our shire is a challenge for councillors,” Cr Gaffney said. “We endeavour to be responsive to community needs while maintaining important core council functions. There are many resources committed to maintaining our roads, parks and gardens, pools, community care, environmental initiatives, recreation, planning, health and building services - all for the benefit of our community and visitors.” “There are significant expectations of council and the cost pressures that we face are often far in excess of what the average household faces. “The rate increase proposed in this draft budget is 5.7 per cent, which allows us to maintain existing service levels, fund new initiatives and continue to allocate extra funds to renew essential infrastructure. “However, council has

kept increases in most fees and charges to a minimum and they will rise by just the CPI, ie 2.5 per cent, although waste charges will rise by 5.7 per cent, reflecting higher charges passed on to us from Albury Council. “It is good to note that Indigo’s rates are still below the average for small shires in Victoria.” Council took over responsibility for its libraries with the closure last year of the Upper Murray Regional Library. “To support this, we will be employing 1.6 additional library staff, primarily for the new library being built within the council office in Yackandandah,” Cr Gaffney said. “We will also employ an enforcement officer for the building and environmental health areas, a role to be shared with Towong Shire, and a part-time volunteer coordinator, to fill a role previously held for many years by a volunteer.” The total draft budget for 2014-’15 is $28.09 million. The capital works program is $10.45 million plus $4.07 million of work carried over from 2013-’14 for a total of $14.52 million. The draft budget is available for public comment until the end of May and submissions can be sent to council at 101 Ford Street, Beechworth, 3747, or by email to info@indigoshire.vic.gov.au

Council ignores petition By KRYSTEN MANUEL AS EXPECTED, AlburyCity has disregarded a petition aimed at removing anti-abortion protesters from the front of the Englehardt Street Fertility Control Clinic. Ignoring the 5000-plus signatures, council was quick to say that the proposed creation of an exclusion zone in front of the premises was beyond its powers. Council reinforced earlier advice that a local policy introducing a form of exclusion zone on a public road is not supported by the NSW Local Government Act and urged the petitioners to take up their cause with the State Government. “Quite simply, what they are asking us to do we do not have the legal power to provide,” AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack said. “As stated many times already this is an issue that needs to be ad-

dressed by the State Government. “The protesters are gathering on a public road and the NSW Local Government Act does not provide the power for council to restrain or control protests in these locations. “In order for us to develop a new local policy that provides for a type of targeted exclusion zone, as suggested in the petition, it would require a change to the Local Government Act. “The State Government is the only tier of government capable of enacting such change.” Rights To Privacy Group (RTPG) spokesman Pieter Mourik said the Council’s response was not surprising, however this is not the end of the line for RTPG. “The RTPG are disappointed but not surprised by this, however, it’s not just the RTPG, it’s the more than 5500 Albury citizens who will be disappointed and probably an-

other 10,000 who didn’t have the opportunity to sign the petition as we only had four weeks to collect the signatures,” he said. “I think the majority of the Albury community will be absolutely amazed at how committed the Albury Council is to do nothing. “Despite Kevin Mack last week saying it’s all done and dusted, no Cr Mack, as far as the Albury residents and the Rights To Privacy Committee is concerned, it’s not all done and dusted - it’s just beginning. “The Albury community is absolutely fed up with the weekly violation of women’s privacy when they go into a legal clinic to have a legal operation. We now have formal witness statements that have gone onto the police which prove that women are harassed, intimidated and have the footpaths obstructed. “We totally support the right to

have a legal protest, as we support the right to freedom of speech, but we do not support them violating the right to medical privacy which is sacrosanct.” Cr Mack also confirmed that council had consulted with the Albury Police on the matter with specific reference to the concerns raised in the petition. Council was assured by the Albury Local Area Command that it was the most appropriate regulatory authority to deal with complaints regarding the behaviour of protesters and remains available to consult with any member of the community to discuss any issues or concerns. “Anyone accessing the clinic who feels harassed or intimidated is advised to call the police immediately,” Cr Mack said. A report regarding the matter will be presented to the May Planning and Development Committee meeting for noting.

Albury Rights To Privacy Group spokesman Dr Pieter Mourik said despite AlburyCity’s response to the petition, the group will continue to fight the Englehardt Street protesters.

A credit to the community, and volunteers are banking on it ALBURY is one of 30 communities across NSW to soon welcome Timebanking, as announced by the NSW Government last week. Member for Albury Greg Aplin said Albury was selected following a registration of interest process seeking communities to take part in the expansion of Timebanking. “This is an exciting opportunity for this region to be at the forefront of a game change in the way volunteers are acknowledged by their communities,” he said. “Timebanking has been very suc-

cessful in the Hunter and Central Coast trial sites, attracting 4,300 members, so it is fantastic that our community will have the opportunity to benefit from the program. “Timebanking is a new concept in Australia and allows members to earn ‘time credits’ for volunteering. “They ‘bank’ these time credits and redeem them later for a service of personal value, such as help around the home, support with shopping or getting your car washed. “Through Timebanking, commu-

nities will have the capacity to provide new recognition and support for volunteers, and improve the respect and dignity with which those who volunteer are treated.” Minister for Citizenship and Communities Victor Dominello said the Timebanking trial began in October 2012 after consultation with the volunteering sector. “I listened to the community and the NSW Government committed $300,000 to create a trial with the participation of people in the Hunter, Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Central Coast regions and as a result 4300

people exchanged 10,300 hours of support,” he said. “We know NSW residents commit more than 240 million hours to volunteering each year, contributing an estimated $5 billion to our state’s economy. “Timebanking is about recognising those commitments, connecting like-minded volunteers and facilitating mutual benefit. “Just one example of someone involved in the trial was Kate, who suffers from an illness and lives by herself. She joined Timebanking in January 2013 and earned 10 hours of

credits by offering travel advice and tour details to other Timebank members. “In return she has received support from other volunteers who have assisted her with gardening, cleaning and home maintenance. “I am delighted to see something that started as a good idea, develop rapidly into a force for positive recognition and support in so many communities. Volunteers deserve it.” More information is available at www.timebanking.com.au and www. volunteering.nsw.gov.au/timebanking

Yoga winter warmer By KRYSTEN MANUEL AFTER experiencing homelessness from time to time herself, local yoga teacher Mary Pechacek has made it her business to make a difference in the lives of many. For over a decade, Ms Pechacek has given cash to people living on the street and is now aiming to raise $700 towards the campaign Swags For The Homeless for people in the region. The four-week program consists of four classes per week, each at different times and several venues thanks to generous donations of space. The classes are labeled ‘commu-

nity classes’ in that anyone of any yoga ability can attend, with donations running from $5 per class. “As long as I’ve been teaching yoga, which is over 14 years now, out of my school I’ve taken a certain amount of cash or donated,” Ms Pechacek said. “I became interested in the homeless when I started having to go to Melbourne for a year every week for a couple of days. I would take cash out of my takings and hand it out to people on the street. “I came across people camped out in the wet. It really struck me that they really had nothing, they had no shelter. “Being a yoga teacher, for me,

is a challenge in continually finding that inner purpose in teaching. Part of the challenge is finding a way to serve if you’re following the yoga path. “I’ve been doing yoga since I was 16. It started with a car accident and yoga helped me get back on my feet again. I’m 63 now so it’s been a while. “I also wanted to put that out to my students as well and ask them to join me in coming to yoga for a reason that’s deeper than their own personal gain - it is about fostering humanity, treating all life as though it’s sacred and creating community. “The homeless are often outside community, they don’t feel like they

belong, they’re there for varied reasons. “This idea of giving a backpack bed which is shelter, they can put their belongings in there, maybe giving them something like that will help them feel like they are a part of the community and break a cycle in their life.” In June Ms Pechacek will also run a desert yoga retreat with camels, and of course swags, through Outback Australian Camels. She would also like to thank The Space, Acrobat and Regent Cinema for their fantastic support. For more information or to donate, visit https://swagsforhomeless. everydayhero.com/au/mary

Guiding our future ADVERTISEMENT

AMONG the many valuable and varied courses on offer at the Albury Wodonga Community College (AWCC) is the Certificate III and Diploma in Early Childhood Education. The industry of Early Childhood Education is continuing to grow, with more and more people realising the value of the field and implications for future generations. “In that industry they’re recognising more and more that education between zero and five is where children establish really good learning patterns,” AWCC general manager Anna Speedie said. “Early Childhood Education also aids the child’s ability to learn now and into the future. “These roles are really significant and it’s an incredibly increasing industry, so in terms of jobs, there’s a great opportunity even in our local area.” To define the two courses, Certificate III provides entry to the industry, while the diploma furthers study and opportunities in

the workplace. An emphasis on smaller class sizes is always upheld at the AWCC, with facilitators arguing smaller classes equal more individual communication between teacher and student. “We work on small class sizes so students get really good one on one with tutors,” Ms Speedie said. “We have really great support mechanisms for students as well, that’s the positive feedback that we’ve always had from our students.” Linda, an AWCC 2014 student, said her learning experience at AWCC so far has been exemplary on several different fronts. “Group sizes are good for learning and sharing ideas from various workplaces,” she said. “There’s not too many students, you don’t get lost. “It’s not an imposing environment, it’s a fantastic atmosphere and competitively priced.” The courses offer an opportunity to learn practical skills in caring for babies through to older children, basic behaviour management skills and a pathway to further training and employment. “We also organise their placement, which is a component of their training, so we work very closely with the industry so we match the student to the right centre,” Ms Speedie said. “Their learning experience is good but they also get the right fit. “Often what happens is the facility really likes them and they get employment.”

Social Seen Thrill of the hill By KRYSTEN MANUEL AMONG a field of professional athletes, avid runners and athletes of all abilities and backgrounds, Michael Hosking has risen above the pack to claim Nail Can Hill this year. The Wodonga athlete made a snap decision on Sunday morning to enter the event after several years of painfully coming in second. In a time of 40.11 minutes, Hosking was the first to burst through the finish

line against 1283 participants. In comparison to previous years the time was slower thanks to a strong headwind that pushed competitors back during the 11.3km run. Behind Hosking, Luke Preston finished second with a time of 40.53 minutes and Anthony Evans came in third with a time of 41.15 minutes. In the women’s open, Nadine Barnes headed up the pack, finishing with a time of 47.54 minutes, fol-

lowed by Cara Peake at 48.32 minutes, closely followed by Kristin Murtagh at 48.34 minutes. The Nail Can Hill Run was originally the brainchild of orienteers Peter Harper and Lester Sawyer. First held in 1977, the run attracted 98 starters, jumping quickly the following year to 474 participants. The event now attracts over 1200 competitors and remains one of the biggest events on the running calendar.

DURING National Volunteer Week (12-18 May) we highlight the value volunteers bring to our communities and society. Volunteers add value not only to the lives of the people they support, but they add value to our community as a whole. They help build trust, relationships and connections within communities. While volunteer contribution in Australia is valued at up to $200 billion a year, it is all the vital social benefits they add to society that make volunteers priceless. Volunteers enhance community well-being and make communities stronger and more resilient. They share information, skills, resources and build bridges between people. Voluntary service is a fundamental principle of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement. Since our creation 100 years ago this year, Australian Red Cross has supported volunteers to make a difference in their communities. That’s how we started, that’s what made the difference, and that’s how we must continue. Today we are supported by over 30,000 volunteers. Our volunteers work with and support people in the community, helping to build connections and trusting relationships. Today we thank all volunteers. Our society is more supportive, connected and inclusive because of their generosity. We welcome you to join us in celebrating the contribution of volunteers they truly are priceless. Robert Tickner, CEO Australian Red Cross.

was done to reduce bushfire fuel on public land with methods such as planned burning, slashing, mowing and the construction of fire breaks. Last year, this government delivered the biggest planned burning program the state has seen in three decades. We protected our state by undertaking over 255,000 hectares of planned burns. Over the next few weeks you may continue to see or smell smoke from planned burns in your area and some roads may be closed. Although this may cause inconveniences, these burns are part of a plan to reduce bushfire risk to our community, property and the environment. The planned burns are carried out under carefully managed conditions and I thank the DEPI, Parks Victoria and CFA team for all their hard work. The height of the fire season may have passed, but being fire aware and prepared is an ongoing and shared responsibility. Landowners need to continue to take action by clearing weeds and removing firewood, rubbish and other fuel from around private property on a regular basis. Don’t wait until the weather warms up again. I urge everyone in our community to know the fire risk where they live, work or travel, and what they should do if faced with a fire. For the latest information see the planned burning map on the DEPI website www.depi.vic. gov.au/burnsmap or call the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667. THE past fire season was a real reminder that we need to take the risk of bushfire in our local area very seriously, no matter where we live and work. Fires in Victoria are fierce and pose a real threat to lives and property. The Victorian Government worked hard to ensure the state’s emergency services were prepared for the past season, with aircraft, tankers and crews always at the ready. I thank all those involved in the fire effort for their hard work and commitment demonstrated in the face of fires threatening life and property. Even before the season started, a lot of work

Riverina’s sweet sounds in Wagga By KRYSTEN MANUEL SEVENTY-FIVE students from across the Riverina are in Wagga Wagga this week for one of the biggest ever regional music camps. The talented young musicians will be working under the guidance of renowned conductor, Di Hall and a team of enthusiastic tutors. As well as polishing their performance with some of the region’s best aspiring musicians, the students will be auditioned during the camp for

future West of the Divide Band international tours, State Wind Ensemble 2014 and Riverina Concert Band 2014. Bringing together students from 21 regional schools including Albury and Corowa High, the camp is one of a wealth of creative and performing arts enrichment activities offered to Riverina public school students each year. These enrichment opportunities enable students to extend their talents well beyond anything that can be offered by

any individual school and have seen local students blossom in state, national and international arenas. As usual the camp will conclude with a public concert. This year, the concert which will be held at Ashmont Public School hall at 1.30pm on Friday 9 May, will feature one of the largest ever concert bands assembled to perform in the Riverina in recent years. The music camp is being hosted by Wagga Wagga High School.

Positive Parenting Service THE Positive Parenting Telephone Service provided by Gateway Community Health focuses on building positive relationships between parents/carers and their children. The service helps parents to reinforce good behaviour, it teaches children new skills, and helps parents to set rules and give successful instructions. The service helps parents to respond to misbehaviour immediately, to use behavioural strategies that work and helps to develop realistic expectations of themselves and their children. “Parents or carers enrol for a variety of reasons; they may just want to know they are on the right track with parenting, they might have children that don’t listen or follow instructions or they might be struggling with specific behavioural issues,” coordinator Andrea Slattery said. “Parents may also feel that they are yelling a lot and things are out of control. It can also support parents who might not have access to their children – they might be going through a separation.” The Positive Parenting Telephone Service is a unique program which can help to overcome the barriers that families may face in accessing parenting services due to social and rural isolation. The program appealed to Emily from Tatura, as they live on a farm and have a young family.

“ I liked that it was one on one over the phone, so my particular circumstances could be discussed in detail,” she said. “I would recommend this program as it helped me by providing strategies to deal with my toddlers behaviour. It also gave me confidence in what I was doing. I really enjoyed discussing my children with my parenting educator who was experienced with children’s behaviour and being able to discuss examples of problems that come up in daily life and how best to deal with them.” The program is available for parents or carers of children between the ages of two and ten years. “Once parents enrol with us they are provided with a workbook that covers the ten week program. Parents read and complete a chapter of the workbook each week in conjunction with a weekly 30 minute phone conversation with a parent educator,” Ms Slattery said. “We basically go through their answers, discuss how they are going and give them positive encouragement and support. “It’s a self-referral service, so parents just contact us on 1800 880 660, they talk to one of our staff, we complete an intake assessment which takes 10 – 15 minutes and they can start within two weeks. Parents can elect to undertake day or evening phone sessions.”

Thumbs Down TO the Commercial Club for trying to demolish one of the best examples of Art Deco/Art Novo buildings left in Albury.

Thumbs Up TO all the volunteers that work at Wodonga Dog Rescue trying to find homes for dogs and cats that have been left for whatever reason. They work so hard getting these furry kids homes, well done to you all at WDR for all the hard work you do!

JUST over a quarter of the Rural Housing Network Limited’s (RHNL) long-term housing in Wodonga is occupied by people over 55. RHNL CEO Celia Adams said the numbers of older people facing homelessness were on the increase in Wodonga. “This can be due to older people facing rental price increases they can’t afford, family breakdown or illness which affects their ability to pay their rent,” Ms Adams said. She said recent media attention focusing on increasing numbers of older women facing homelessness was not borne out by RHNL’s own data. “This may be due to the fact that older women either don’t identify their circumstances as homeless or won’t seek out assistance from services like RHNL. Currently, we are still seeing more older men than women accessing our services,” Ms Adams said. “We’d like people to know that if they are aware of anyone at risk of losing their accommodation in our area, which takes in the small and large towns from Seymour to Wodonga and Shepparton to Mount Beauty, they can contact the Rural Housing Network.

“Our Initial Assessment and Planning staff can help them with short-term assistance, such as emergency accommodation and with advice and referral to other services. One of these might be our Private Rental Advocacy service if they are having difficulty with their current living arrangements,” Ms Adams said. The Rural Housing Network services the Goulburn and North East regions and has offices in Seymour, Shepparton, Wangaratta and Wodonga. RHNL has also considered the low-cost housing options available for older people in the region and found that nearly 100 people over 55 are living as permanent residents in caravan parks. “The risk for older people living in caravan parks is that if the park changes owners, the new owners may have plans that do not involve permanent residents, as was recently the case in Wodonga,” Ms Adams said. Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data from August last year shows that more than 5480 people in Wodonga are aged over 55. RHNL manages 450 long term Community Housing homes in the region with 87 of these in Wodonga.

Riverwood’s options By KRYSTEN MANUEL THERE has never been a better time to satisfy your curiosity and visit Riverwood Retirement Village. Sales manager Wayne Matsinos has been busy assisting people with inspections for the past fortnight as the variety of properties up for sale has increased unlike the age of his clients. “The clients recently have been in the age range from about 60 to 70, so the demographic of age is coming back a bit,” Mr Matsinos said. “People are actually looking to get into retirement a lot earlier and see the benefits of a lifestyle village like Riverwood. They’re deciding their homes are too big to look after, the kids have left home and so are deciding that ‘yes, this is the way to go for the future’. “I spoke to one lady in Lavington who hadn’t considered Riverwood. She hadn’t been in because she’s in her sixties and hadn’t thought about retirement living, and when she did come in she was very surprised to see how great the properties are. “She doesn’t need a big house, but certainly enough space for her to enjoy life instead of having to worry about gardening on the weekends.” Mr Matsinos said the biggest drawcard for people considering moving into retirement living was the freedom of choosing how much time they wanted to spend gardening With Riverwood having some units with no gardens to tend, residents are left with more time to travel, relax and get the most out of life.

Mary McKenna, Bob Watson and sales manager Wayne Matsinos on Riverwood’s pristine bowling green. Those wanting to sell their homes can also take advantage of the current market conditions. With current interest rates still at a record low, this helps to make it easier to sell, as long as the property is priced in line with the current market. “Interest rates certainly play a major role when people are looking to buy into the marketplace, so being on hold again is fantastic for the people actually looking to purchase,” Mr Matsinos said. And why choose Riverwood? “Riverwood is the best option for people looking for a relaxed lifestyle,” Mr Matsinos said. “It’s only two kilometres from the main part of town, we’re close to medical specialists, have an indoor heated

to rise at a rate of 6.2 per cent - a modest and sustainable figure given the sizeable rise in the numbers of older Australians in future years, about which we have known for a long time - indeed the 2009 Pension Review, which had bi-partisan support, confirmed the age pension is sustainable over coming decades. “The Treasurer’s speech focused on expenditure but not on government revenue and we need to discuss how government pays for the things taxpayers expect it to provide. “Critically, the figures the Treasurer released leave out the generous tax concessions paid on compulsory superannuation - which benefit the top income earners and are not paid to low income earners at all. “An Australian Institute analysis released this week shows that superannuation concessions are higher than the costs of the pension, so the question must be asked - why is the Treasurer intent on targeting those who can least afford it, Australia’s pensioners? “Australians see the age pension and provision of health and aged care as core business of government and took the government at its word at the last election. “It’s time for a comprehensive and holistic look at retirement needs and the ageing population, not this piecemeal approach which targets some people and not others.”

A NEW poll has revealed the high levels of concern about any changes to the pension, with more than 70 per cent of Australians against raising the pension age to 70. The Essential Research poll released yesterday reveals 71 per cent of respondents disapprove of raising the pension age to 70; 72 per cent believe that Australians should be able to receive the age pension at 65 or younger with only 10 per cent happy to wait to 70; and 82 per cent of those aged 55-64 disapprove of including the value of the family home in the assets test for eligibility for the age pension. Ian Yates, chief executive of leading seniors advocate COTA Australia, called on the Federal Government to acknowledge its clear pre-election promise to make no changes to the age pension and listen to the overwhelming opinions of the electorate. “Mr Hockey continues to point first off to pensions and aged care needing to be cut because the budget is in crisis and they are going to make it worse,” he said. “Yet the figures the Treasurer has released simply don’t support this. “According to tables the Treasurer released yesterday from the Commission of Audit, GDP is rising at a rate of 5.1 per cent and government outlays only at the slightly higher 5.3 per cent - pointing to the need for tightening but not for major cuts to seniors living standards. “Similarly, pensions are projected

WHERE to live is one of the biggest decisions that seniors face. For many people approaching retirement, the decision between keeping the family home, downsizing to a smaller house or unit, or ridding themselves of the stress and expense that can come with home ownership altogether is a difficult one. Renting during retirement can offer the flexibility, freedom and security many seniors are looking for. At Mardross Gardens in Albury, the focus is to bring life to community living, making seniors retirement enjoyable, rewarding and peaceful. Mardross Gardens is part of Garden Villages which consists of 34 villages spread over Australia. Mardross Gardens is architecturally designed, and the village offers safe and comfortable homes nestled among private gardens. With a community centre, leisure facilities and planned activities available, residents have the option to be involved in an active and social community. The rental model gives seniors the freedom to save their nest egg, and not have the added pressure of home ownership. Meal plans and optional services are available, and aim to assist seniors in continuing to be accountable for their own wellbeing. Mardross Gardens is pet friendly, and designed with security in mind. Anne, the village manager, offers seniors a friendly personalised service, and makes sure she is meeting each and every resident’s needs.

Big Brother is still watching STRAP yourself in for this terrifically frightening event set against a towering wall of plasma screens as Shake and Stir Theatre Co and HotHouse Theatre present ‘1984’ by George Orwell. The critically acclaimed production promises to come screaming into the Butter Factory Theatre as part of a four-month national tour. It arrives in Albury-Wodonga, for a strictly limited season, from 13-24 May. George Orwell wrote 1984 in 1948 as a prediction of our future. Some 66 years on the themes resonate deeply, making the novel a reappearing title on many must-read book lists. “The parallels between what Orwell explored and what we are experiencing in the 21st century are frighteningly accurate - and not just in politics but in many facets of modern living,” co-artistic director and co-adaptor Nick Skubij said. “How he managed to depict facing - and what we’d do to avoid - our biggest fear.” The contemporary relevance is not the only scary aspect to the production. “It’s our aim to keep the story as dark, twisted and grotesque as it can be - it’s Big Brother meets Saw 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 - we are blurring the lines between reality and horror,” Skubij said. Winston Smith works at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history to fit with the political agenda of the day. When Winston falls in love with Julia, his life awakens to new possibilities. Together, they begin to question the Party and are drawn towards conspiracy. When their love is discovered, they are violently separated, detained and prepared for conversion. For those with original thoughts, there is Room 101. Orwell’s prescient 1948 novel was a terrifying vision of the future in which everyone was slave to a tyrannical regime. It also coined the terms Big Brother, thoughtcrime, doublethink and newspeak. In keeping with the novel, live rats are part of the performance and they have two nominated rat wranglers who have been specifically trained in

The rats are all vet checked, and the company will be travelling with all the relevant paperwork. The company is very aware of the protocol of travelling and performing with live animals. “Following the success of our Animal Farm National Tour last year, we are thrilled to be presenting another production that is just as visceral, thought provoking and appealing to audiences of all ages around the country once more,” Skubij said.

From the team that brought you Animal Farm, this new stage adaptation brings George Orwell’s final novel hurtling into the present.

Hotel’s sting in the tale MOVIE: The Grand Budapest Hotel STARRING: Ralph Fiennes, Tony Revolori, Saoirse Ronan, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Edward Norton, Jude Law, Owen Wilson DIRECTOR: Wes Anderson DURATION: 100 minutes AS A fan of oddball humour, bizarre storylines, offbeat characters, ornate sets and just general bright colours, this film greatly appealed to me. I wouldn’t follow the general gist of the critics and say it’s a masterpiece - I felt at times I waited too long between laughs. Some loose ends - deliberately not tied up to in order to add to the overall weird atmosphere of the film - should have been, especially considering so many other elements were pored over. The Grand Budapest Hotel tells the fascinating story of a devoted concierge, Gustave H (Ralph Fiennes), his brilliant bellboy Zero M (Tony Revolori), a great fortune left by a withered old woman and the murder that causes all the confusion. Oh, and of course - The Grand Budapest Hotel. Jumping to and from several different time periods is all part and parcel of the film, but the main story falls at the end of the hotel’s glory

days in the 1930s - The Grand Budapest Hotel is kept in pristine condition and Gustave is running the tightest of ships. When Zero joins the team, Gustave takes him under his wing and teaches him the art of being a bellboy. Along the way, Zero slowly discovers Gustave’s proud fetish for older blonde women - and not your ‘Stiffler’s mum’ type either, more the type that’s five seconds away from actually being a stiff. When one particular special friend of Gustave’s is murdered, a fight breaks out over her will, in which she leaves a very valuable painting to Gustave. Gustave proceeds to steal the painting, gets blamed for her murder, ends up in jail and sets out on a journey for justice with his trusted friend Zero. To describe this film as quirky would be a severe understatement. It’s hilarious, it’s dry, it’s sad, it’s bizarre, it’s heart-warming, and it’s confronting. Walk in with every expectation that within 10 seconds flat you will both laugh and gasp, have your stomach turned and feel your heart race. It’s also not one for the dummies out there.  –Krysten Manuel

WITH GEOFF HABERECHT OF TRU HIFI

BIRTHDAY SALE! The test of time 3RD To celebrate all stock, including Sonos IT IS now three years since I returned to the retail market with the intent to provide, educate and entice people back to a quality of sound home entertainment. Prior to Tru Hifi I had a stint at co-ordinating the hifi industry which loosely comprises 100 stores across Australia, all competing against one another in their own markets and online in a very competitive environment. The insight was valuable, as I not only met and worked with many of the retailers, I also worked with the import companies distributing most of the major brands. A glaring omission from the regional markets was a true source of hifi equipment demonstration and the knowledge of correct matching, that is to identify your requirements, match the right product with the right use and remain within the specified budget. This form of specialisation has become a rarity in regional Australia, as I have also learnt our metropolitan customers have similar issues if they are working to a lean budget. In the past three years 80 per cent of our clients have come from outside Albury, some travelling hundred of kilometres to

reduced even further for May.

BRANDS IN STOCK

make an investment. We spend time in trying to avoid just shipping a product to a client, for in many cases by spending just five minutes with the client we often find that the item was not the best product it was intended for. When we first opened a great majority of our clients were fixing or troubleshooting this very issue of just buying online and trusting paid-for advertising reviews. Happily today we spend less time on troubleshooting and more time finding the best solution for the situation. No two customers’ needs are the same, and no one size fits all, we all have different needs. Quality audio, home cinema, multi-room integration, wifi, streaming and much more are creating a complex home environment that is more demand-

INCLUDE DENON, MARANTZ, CAMBRIDGE AUDIO, ANTHEM, VINCENT, REGA, PROJECT, ONKYO, LOEWE, MISSION, JAMO, PARADIGM, SWANS, SONUS FABER, KEF, PHILIPS, SONOS, MARTIN LOGAN, RICHTER, SUBSONIC, TANNOY, CASTLE, CHORD, ARCAM, SENNHEISER, PSB, AKG, MANHATTAN, NORDSTONE, EPSON, HELSYN, SAMSUNG, THOR, NEOTECH, NAD

ing than many major companies were using a few years ago to run complex businesses. Our endeavour is to keep the process simple, by establishing Tru Hifi as a strong regional base we now work with many of the city-based retail/importers. This ability allows us to mimic many of the city stores’ ranges and prices without the vested interest of just promoting the brands we import. The enjoyment of the past three years has been watching many of the clients I sold hifi equipment 20 to 40 years ago become reacquainted with a quality sound when they truly believed that they could not appreciate quality sounds in the same way as they matured. Take the test and you may be surprised.

Tru Hifi provides music and home entertainment solutions from budget to premium at online prices. NOW LOCATED! 383 Townsend Street Albury Ph 02 6021 2226 Mob 0401 181 854 Open Mon to Saturday or by appointment. Tru HiFi matches or betters most online prices.

Set on a spacious 824 square metre block, 9 Memorial Drive welcomes you with green, expansive lawns and a neat, low-maintenance garden which follows throughout the backyard. Through the front door and to your left will find you in the master bedroom - king-size, with a gloriously roomy walk-in robe and modern, black and white schemed ensuite. The master also has access to the double garage, which itself offers remote control roller doors and a clothesline for the colder months. Turning right from the front door will take you to the lounge/dining room - a welcoming, broad lightfilled space, perfect for those who love to entertain. Moving towards the heart of the home, the two-pack kitchen features quality appliances, including dishwasher, gas cooktop and corner pantry. In the same space is the family room, which is cleverly tiled throughout, with sliding access to the yard and classy feature wall with

light boxes. This home also enjoys ducted heating and cooling throughout for year-round comfort. Bedroom one is queen-size and features a built-in robe, as does bedroom two, while bedroom three is a double. The laundry features a conveniently placed separate toilet with vanity - great for outdoorsy families to avoid constant traffic throughout the house. The main bathroom is comprised of a shower, bath and vanity area - again following a modern, classy black and white scheme. Outside the all-weather entertainment area takes centre stage. The possibilities are endless when considering the paving, large grassed area ahead and fantastic view to the rolling hills surrounding Wodonga. The yard itself wraps around the house in such a fashion that it could easily be separated into two areas ideal for someone who might want to put a pool in one day. Also featured in the yard is gate access to the Castle Creek Walking Track and a large, roller door access shed to house the boat, caravan or even set up as a business or workshop. A very versatile home in a beautiful, quiet area - a must see.

CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria

Space - the final frontier SPACE, the freedom to make noise, to live as you like - for many people in rural and regional Victoria these have been part of life for generations. And for many “tree changers”, who are keen to enjoy the benefits of living away from a major city, such freedoms are part of the attraction. But with the growth in recent years in our major regional centres of newer, smaller homes, this is starting to change. There are now many more units and townhouses - and even some apartments - than ever before. And they are clearly becoming more popular, with healthy capital growth and rentals. The rental yield for this style of property in regional Victoria is now at 5.1 per cent for one-bedroom units and 5.2 per cent for two-bedroom units. This is good news for investors, and for owner occupiers looking for a property that is likely to grow in popularity and value. For those looking for life in a smaller home, townhouses and apartments offer many benefits. They can be a welcome change low-maintenance, a ready-made community, perhaps a brand-new property. And for many, it offers an affordable step on to the property ladder. But it can be a big adjustment, with most regulated by an owners corporation (previously known as a body corporate). For this reason, thorough pre-purchase research is

Moves on highway clean-up

the key to living harmoniously in this environment. If you are thinking of buying a unit or apartment, it’s important to thoroughly check the section 32 statement available to potential buyers. In this, you will find out what the monthly, quarterly or annual costs are for the owners corporation. It’s also worth getting additional information on the property. You can ask for this from the agent, who will either be able to provide it, or ask for it from the vendor. Some common questions to ask the agent include: have there been issues with parking, rubbish bins or gardens? All of these can cause issues in medium density living. You may also want to ask whether any of the owners have been reluctant to spend on maintenance or capital works. Also, ask for financial statements and minutes of the most recent annual meeting of the owners corporation, and any other minutes that might be available. It’s also worth inquiring about the owners corporation management or manager. If they are a member of the REIV they’ll have signed up to a code of ethics. Armed with the right information, this style of living can be the right move - and just the answer for those wanting to downsize or, in the case of first-home buyers, make their first step on the property ladder.

AFTER ongoing discussions between AlburyCity, Member for Albury Greg Aplin and Roads and Maritime Services, and a recent article by NewsWeekly, maintenance on the Hume Freeway through Albury will be improved. “The issue of road maintenance along the Hume Freeway was raised with me last month so I wrote to the Minister for Roads and spoke with the Regional Manager of Roads and Maritime Services, gaining support for an improved outcome,” Mr Aplin said. “I have now been advised that litter collection will increase to six times a year. “I have also been advised that an additional review of the maintenance schedule for the mound south of the Fallon Street overpass and the south exit ramp at East Street will be undertaken to improve the appearance. I had raised these matters prior to recent media comment and I am pleased with the outcome now proposed.

“The community also has a role to play in this issue of littering along with industrial premises developed along the freeway. “Correct disposal of litter and waste products will assist in reducing the build-up of litter along our roadways.”

time when land sales were trending low. “Considering that the number of house and unit sales rose by almost eight per cent over the December quarter and were up by 18 per cent compared with a year ago, the slowdown in land sales over the second half of 2013 is counter to broader housing market trends,” Mr Lawless said. “With vacant land prices continuing to rise at a time when volumes have moved lower we can surmise that demand is exceeding supply, which in turn drives prices higher. With housing affordability coming increasingly under the spotlight, an improvement in the flow of land supply would be a welcome scenario.” Key markets like Sydney, Brisbane and Perth all saw a lower turnover during the final quarter of 2013, with transactions increased in Melbourne, Adelaide and Hobart.

land is starting to fall behind the demand for new homes. The upturn in residential building which has much to contribute to overall economic growth risks being brought to a halt by inadequate land provision.” Mr Garrett said that policy makers should act quickly to ensure that the supply of land was boosted across Australia. He trusts this will improve the chances of sustaining the recovery in residential construction. “New home building offers the possibility for some economic good news this year. It is important that land supply policies act in concert with broader economic objectives,” he said. RP Data’s Research Director Tim Lawless added that the combination of low interest rates together with government grants for newly constructed housing was increasing the demand across the vacant land sector at a

THE latest HIA-RP Data Residential Land Report shows that conditions in Australia’s residential land market continued to tighten during the December 2013 quarter. Housing Industry Association senior economist Shane Garrett said during the final quarter of 2013 the total number of residential land sales declined by 1.8 per cent to 15,447 lots. This was the second consecutive quarter of declined activity in the land market while the median price rose by 4.2 per cent. The figures add further to the evidence of serious supply issues in the residential land market, he added. “For the second consecutive quarter we have seen turnover in the market decline while at the same time lot prices have shown significant increase,” Mr Garrett said. “This is a sign that the supply of residential building

McQuillan goes online By KRYSTEN MANUEL ALBURY Tigers players, supporters, friends and family of James McQuillan have created a dedicated website for the young footballer. Albury Tigers President Gavan Schultz says the website will become an important tool in keeping the community informed about James and future fund events. “There’s been overwhelming support from the community wanting to donate to the James McQuillan Future Fund and receive the latest news on fund-raising events and updates on his health and rehabilitation,” Schultz said. “It’s particularly timely this week as James has been transferred from the Austin Hospital to the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre. It’s estimated he will remain in Melbourne for rehabilitation for at least six months.” The McQuillan family released a statement last week,

saying while they continued to hope for the best, the full ramifications of James’s diagnosed quadriplegia will not be known for some time. “James remains optimistic and in good spirits,” it read. “His positive attitude and motivation do not come as a surprise to those who know James well and these attributes will be of great benefit to him as he persists with rehabilitation. “James and the family are very thankful and overwhelmed with the support, prayers and love that have been extended our way from the community at large.” James also released a statement thanking the community for their support. “I’m determined to get stuck into my rehabilitation, and my main goal is to complete my physiotherapy degree, however long it takes,” he said. “I had a really great day last Friday watching the Anzac Day

footy with close friends and family. “It’s been good to hear score updates from Albury Tigers matches while I have been in hospital. “My spirits are high and I continue to hope for the best. Thanks so much to everyone.” Schultz said everyone from the Tigers was committed to assisting James in his recovery. “We’ve been overwhelmed by offers of help from all sections of the community across the Border and north east region and beyond,” he said. “This dedicated website will be a valuable tool for us all to better assist James and support him in his journey. “Thanks to OGA Creative Agency for donating the website and thanks to the community for your support so far.” Visit www.jamesmcquillan. com.au or call the James McQuillan Future Fund on 0403 333 093 for donations or more information.

Local Sport Teams flock to netball By KRYSTEN MANUEL

THE annual Albury Netball Association Tournament at JC King Park was a record-breaking success, attracting 79 teams from far and wide. “None of the committee members can remember the last time we had anywhere near that number,” Albury Netball Association secretary Catherine Trinnick said. “It was a massive turn-out. The teams came from as far as Griffith, Leeton, Wagga, Shepparton, Benalla and further. Albury had nine rep teams and Wodonga had around the same.” The tournament was divided into four divisions - U11, U13, U15 and U17. U11 did not play finals as the focus was purely on experience and learning for their age. The younger teams were given certificates and a pair of socks donated by The Athlete’s Foot in Albury. Results wise, Albury took out two out of three age groups. In U13 Albury beat Echuca 17-

Kelsea Bullivant, Dariah Farrington, Amelia Cook and Kyra Quinlivan. Pictures: ADAM WILSON 15, in U15 Albury beat Wodonga 14-10 and in U17 Wagga ruined Albury’s winning streak with a close game, beating them 9-7. The event attracted over 2000 people between players, coaches, officials and supporters. “It’s also a good platform for us to raise money for the Albury Netball Association and for the rep girls,” Ms Trinnick said.

“We pulled in about $1600 from the barbecue and about $1700 from a raffle where everything was donated by local businesses. “Personal Best Physiotherapy offered their services for free and donated a $90 voucher for each Albury and Wodonga rep team so the coach could give it to their best on ground. They gave us around $1600, which was fantastic.”

Albury’s Abby Read about to pass the ball to Amelia Cook.

$1.85m sports precinct opened by MP THE new $1.85 million Tallangatta Multisports Precinct at Rowen Park Recreation Reserve in Tallangatta was officially opened on Sunday by Member for Benambra, Mr Bill Tilley. Representing the Minister for Sport and Recreation Damian Drum, Mr Tilley joined Towong Shire mayor Mary Fraser OAM at local celebrations to officially open the brand-new facilities at the park. The park features a new accessible multi-purpose pavilion, a new compliant netball court and swimming pool upgrades. “Each week sport plays a vital role in bringing locals together to support their clubs, get active, and feel part of their communities, especially in regional Victoria,” Mr Tilley said.

“The addition of this high-quality infrastructure opens up a range of new sport and event opportunities for local clubs like the Tallangatta Football Netball Club, local cricket and swimming clubs as well as local schools, and the overall community.” Mr Tilley said the new pavilion, netball court and pool upgrades complemented the existing playing fields already at the park. “The new pavilion, complete with players and umpires’ change rooms, kitchen, social space and modern amenities, will make a real difference for the growing numbers, especially junior girls keen to represent Tallangatta in sports from swimming to netball,” Mr Tilley said. Mr Tilley said the Victorian Government was proud to have

the x-ray group

contributed more than $878,000 towards the precinct development, with $400,000 from the Community Facility Funding Program (CFFP) Major Facilities category, $200,000 from the CFFP - Seasonal Pools category and $278,692 from the Putting Locals First Program, under Regional Development Victoria’s Regional Growth Fund. Mr Tilley said the Regional Growth Fund was investing in community-led projects to strategically drive jobs, investment and innovation in rural and regional Victoria. “Since it was established in 2011, the Regional Growth Fund has delivered almost $400 million, generating over $1.6 billion of total investment across more than 1400 projects,” he said. “Since December 2010, the Victorian Government has provided

funding support of $57.8 million to over 380 projects through the Community Facility Funding Program (CFFP), enabling the development of projects worth over $356 million across the state. “I’d also like to thank the Towong Shire Council for its $536,000 contribution, local community organisations and businesses who contributed over $148,000 in cash, and the tireless efforts of the Tallangatta community, local businesses, and clubs who have all worked together to contribute over $280,000 of in-kind contributions and labour,” he said. “This project has also involved an impressive level of consultation, with the whole Tallangatta community getting involved during the development of the new precinct,” he said.

O&M FOOTY2014 The survival of the rival Simon

Says with SIMON CORR RIVALRIES in sporting contests are just about as important as the contest itself. Many of them are inherent and nostalgic and most supporters can’t quite remember when the disdain first arrived for a particular opposition ... but that’s not important, they all add fuel to a massive build-up and contribute to the theatre of it all. If you follow Australian Cricket, you despise the Poms. If you are a Rugby Union fan, then the All Blacks are the pits. Collingwood hates Carlton just as the Maroons hate the Cockroaches. A rivalry is generally established out of years of fighting it out between one another to win the ultimate prize. Titanic struggles going down to the wire, year in year out. At a local level that very rivalry exists between Albury and Yarrawonga. The two have met in the last five Grand Finals in a row, add to that the countless other thrilling and explosive contests between the two in the last 10 years and it is easy to see why they have established a modern day warfare. However, not all rivalries are spawned as a direct result of epic contests. In fact in history many of the great battles were simply as a result of a geographic location. Iran and Iraq, the Eagles and Fremantle, Port Power and the Crows. In the Ovens and Murray this weekend we have two games in which we see close neighbours and arch enemies re-unite. Down in Wangaratta this Mother’s Day, the Rovers and the Magpies will face off in a home town derby. During the year opposing supporters might share a work office, or a place at the dinner table, but at this game each season it is their God-given right ... No, it’s LAW, to hurl abuse at each other right down to the final minute. Up here on the Border, the battle will be between Lavington and Albury. The spark in these contests has always existed - the big city team versus the boys from out the block. In the last decade or so former

coaches Paul Spargo and Tim Sanson played their part in building up the big game and the momentum hasn’t been lost to this day. The fact that both these sides are well and truly in the mix for Grand Final honours only brings more to the table. Lavington have just fallen short at the preliminary stage of late and largely at the hands of the Tigers. The Panthers are as good a side as they have been for some time, having kept the nucleus of their team and adding key targets in - Adam Prior and Justin Koschitzke. They sit undefeated on top of the ladder, a spot no doubt Albury wants to reclaim as its own. The game will consist of many mini battles all over the ground that will have a massive bearing on the final result. James Saker and Brant Dickson teaming up on the O’hAilpin brothers. Tiger mid-fielders Hyde, Mackie and O’Hara against Pendergast, Stevens and Harris. Prior and Thomspon, Hampton and Palmer. Despite the result and even the margin, one thing will not change at the fall of this game ... a great footy rivalry that is here to stay. In the remaining games this weekend, North Albury will meet the Wodonga Raiders, two sides that have had their share of differences in the past. The Raiders were simply awful last week and the young Hoppers will be targeting this home game for a win. Wodonga will host a rampant Yarrawonga. The Pigeons’ key forwards in Pettifer and Fevola kicked 16 goals between them last week, and will again guarantee the goal umpires receive an almighty workout. The Myrtleford Alpine Saints will host Corowa Rutherglen at the McNamara Reserve. The Roos weren’t too bad in their loss last week to Albury and should have the firepower to take care of the Saints.
