Joshua’s debut fit for a prince By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A YOUNG Torquay dancer has scored a title role in a much-anticipated contemporary production alongside two Australian ballet stars. Joshua Hunt will dance with The Australian Ballet’s ex-principal dancer, Damien Welch, and former senior artist Marc Cassidy in their first return to the stage since retirement. Joshua plays the title role in The White Prince, created by internationally recognised artistic director Stephen Agisilaou with Melbourne’s Vertical Shadows Company. Joshua, who trains with Fiona Luca at Infinite Dance Studios, said contemporary dance was his favourite style, “so this really worked out for me. Joshua auditioned for the big role “even though it (was) my first ever show. The quiet but self-assured 11-yearold said being the youngest cast member was challenging but he was learning a lot and gaining confidence. “The White Prince is the story of friends in an orphanage and it’s about the choices you make in life, he explained. “The dance tells the story because there’s no dialogue, so I have to show my character’s emotions in my expressions and body movements. “It’s different from what I normally do, so it changes the way I approach the moves, allowing the audience to interpret what I’m feeling. The show debuts on 16 May at North Melbourne’s The Meat Market.

Geelong in pole position for supercar race
V8s rev up for city By NOEL MURPHY
THE CATS TO HIT ‘RESET’ INDY SPORT
GEELONG’S waterfront could host a motor racing circuit if Lamborghini-driving Mayor Darryn Lyons and V8 Supercars win state backing. Cr Lyons said talks were underway for a blistering round of the V8 series to race along Western Beach, the central waterfront and Eastern Park. Geelong’s waterfront has been raised repeatedly as a potential motor racing venue since the 1970s but without securing any major events apart from Geelong Speed Trials. The event attracted crowds of 30,000 but closed for a decade in 2003 amid wrangling between organisers and
City Hall before resuming in 2012 as Geelong Revival. “It would be fantastic to have V8 Supercars here. It’s the kind of great major event that’s all about a smart 21st Century city, Cr Lyons said. A successful supercars bid would put Geelong in company with cities such as Gold Coast, Townsville, Canberra, Adelaide and New Zealand’s Auckland, each of which earn millions of dollars a year from V8 supercar events. Townsville reaps around $26 million a year along with broadcasting promotion into 140 countries. Adelaide picks up about $33 million a year with its event,
with has injected $300 million plus into the state’s economy over the past decade. “V8 Supercars should be backed 100 per cent - it’s a magnificent idea, Cr Lyons said. “Just think of them going around the waterfront, through Eastern Gardens, Drumcondra, Rippleside - it would be an incredible thing. V8 Supercars boss James Warburton was reported to have backed a Geelong event but, like Cr Lyons, said talks were still preliminary. He told one media outlet the V8 Supercars “do remarkably well in big regional cities.
Cr Lyons said Geelong “desperately needed to facilitate jobs but would be unable to subsidise the event, so state backing was essential. “I’ve talked about this in the past and Bernie Ecclestone and I worked hard to bring an F1 to Geelong but it’s all about money and we need State Government help - I wish I had $1.3 billion surplus. Cr Lyons owns a Lamborghini and a Ferrari, previously owned by rock star Rod Stewart and F1 legend Michael Schumacher respectively. “I’m a bit of a hot-rodder although a bit old now.

Double Take AS if AFL players aren’t under enough empirical scrutiny already, with measurements for everything from possessions to clangers and skin-folds. KRock commentators set a new metric during the weekend’s Geelong-Richmond match when one, possibly Tim McGrath, mused in the background whether hirsute Tiger Bachar Houli had the AFL’s “thickest beard”. Over to you, AFL stats guru Col Hutchinson!

ney were reported to be sold for more than $200,000 but the reason behind the punch-up remained a bit of a mystery. “There’s only two reasons why best mates would punch on like that,” opined Cr Lyons, drawing on his experience in similar situations during his previous incarnation. “It’s either money or sex.” RED faces in the Liberal camp after Geelong candidate Paula Kontelj this week broke an embargo the government struck with the Geelong Addy about the new Barwon North Health centre cum hospital – twice. Paula tweeted a pic of her and Health Minister David Davis on Monday at 2.17pm and 5.39pm, happily announcing the $28.1
million commitment. She later deleted them but not without giving an interview and photograph to her former employer Bay FM and infuriating the Ryrie St thunderer, prior to its Tuesday morning edition. Come Tuesday, Paula tweeted the same pic again, with the previous day’s date and time still on it.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN LAND prices in the Barwon region are still among the nation’s most expensive despite a 3.7 per cent price decrease, according to a new Housing Industry Association report. The region’s median price of $343 per square metre is the fifth most expensive in Australia. Geelong is the most expensive regional land sales market in Victoria but still had a 45 per cent increase in turnover in the six months to December 2013. The median price for lots in Barwon is $180,000, compared with $215,000 for Melbourne.

HIA Victoria executive director Gil King said the report showed the supply side of the residential construction market might be coming under pressure. Significantly higher demand in 2013 had clashed with “familiar supply bottlenecks, including slow land release, delays in the planning system and outmoded mechanisms for the funding of infrastructure,” he said. “As long as these problems remain unresolved the land market will continue to feel the pressure.” The Independent reported in January that Geelong homes had been rated less-affordable than
New York and the same as London. Restrictive land use policies leading to a lack of land supply were blamed, with prices increasing despite a long-term decline in allotment sizes. A 2014 Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) State of the Land Report said the traditional suburban quarter-acre block was now “nothing but a distant memory”. The average size was now a tenth of an acre, or 423 square metres, after falling 29 per cent over the past decade, the report said.

Jobless at ‘GFC levels’ THE number of unemployed people in Geelong has risen almost 25 per cent even though the jobless rate remains steady, according to the latest Economic Indicators Bulletin. The region has 12,100 unemployed as at June 2013 according to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures quoted in the bulletin. This is the highest number of jobless in the region since the Global Financial Crisis of 2008-2009 when 13,200 were looking for jobs. It represents a 24.7 per cent in-
25% spike to 12,100 idle crease over the 2012-2013 jobless number of 9700. The bulletin estimates the Geelong workforce at 120,096 with the City’s unemployment rate at 6.9 per cent. Surf Coast, Queenscliffe and Golden Plains municipalities all registered unemployment rate increases of 0.6 per cent whole Geelong increased by one per cent. The number of people claiming the Centrelink unemployment allowance
has also climbed from 8312 in 20082009 to 11,319 last year. Dole recipients rose 21.5 per cent from last year. KPMG demographer Bernard Salt said the figures most likely were related to the region’s growing population. “With population growth you have more workers but you also have an extra proportion of the population contributing to the unemployment figures,” Mr Salt said.
“So the rate as a percentage remains steady while the actual numbers are rising as a consequence. “Geelong is a strong lifestyle destination so it’s no surprise there are some people who are just not getting jobs.” Mr Salt said the trend needed to be viewed over a full year to be sure of what was happening. “Even at seven per cent Geelong is a long way from 25 years ago when it was 11 and 12 per cent. “In the broader scheme of things this generation ain’t seen nothing compared to early 1990s.”
Government ‘duds north’ over hospital
GEELONG council has called for feedback on the progress of the trial restricting trucks travelling through central Geelong, underway since 3 March. Feedback will be considered at a Submissions Hearing Panel on 12 June followed by a report to Council and the Truck Operations Committee in July.
Bells erosion SURF Coast Shire Council is undertaking work to prevent erosion of Bells Beach’s sensitive cliff faces and protect the area’s cultural heritage. The erosion protection work, expected to be finished by mid-June, will prevent and manage cliff erosion caused by storms and high winds particularly on the cliffs below the Hammerhead car park stairs and next to the creek.
Crash site upgrade AN intersection with a recent history of nine crashes, including serious injuries, will receive a $280,000 upgrade. National’s upper house member David O’Brien said changes to the Bellarine Hwy (Ormond Rd) and McKillop St intersection included lane reconfiguration and modification of traffic signals.

LABOR MPs have savaged plans for a hospital at North Geelong after the state budget allocated $3.4 million to the project next financial year. The attack follows the Napthine Government’s dumping of a promised $85 million stand-alone public hospital at Waurn Ponds, instead giving $50 million to private operator Epworth to provide public health services in its new facility. “This is just bits and pieces, there’s no real strategy or plan,” Lara MP John Eren said of the northern hospital promise. “They’ve dedicated some money in the first year and some in the second but the bulk’s not until 2017-2018 - in time for the next election.” Bellarine MP Lisa Neville, a former Barwon Health chair who has called for an Ombudsman inquiry into the Waurn Ponds hospital deal, said the Barwon North Health project was not a hospital and not a serious commitment. “It’s not a hospital and I’m not sure if it ever was going to be one. You couldn’t build a hospital for $28 million,” she said. “This is really an expanded community health centre and with only $3.4 milllion to be spent on it, it’s still a long way from being built.” “These plans are like thought bubbles only, they have not been thought through,” Mr Eren said. “We want real outcomes in the north. I don’t believe what they’ve offered is good enough. “I’ve had a petition going which hundreds have signed but this budget is more about saving the job of Denis Napthine.” The offices of Premier Napthine and Health Minister David Davis did not reply to Independent queries about other public services being extended to private operators.

COMIC COUPLE: Cartooonists Jess Alsop and Aayan Abeysekera. 119804 Picture: REG RYAN
Cartoon duo knows where to draw line By NOEL MURPHY COMICS have come a long way from the golden days of last century and proven a great survivor of the artworld. The space heroes and jungle lords once viewed as a bad influence on young minds have moved across all manner of genres: Hollywood blockbusters, fanzines, graphic novels, videos, enough merchandising paraphernalia to boggle the brain, manga, anime, gaming ... The changes keep coming, too, as Geelong’s Jess Alsop and Ayan Abeysekera will happily attest. They’re working up a new comic dubbed Template Heroes using all manner of computer programming and design, backed by crowd sourcing, which could hardly be further from from the hastily rendered penand-ink strip toons that once characterised cartoons.
The pair hold degrees in interactive entertainment, majoring in animation – Jessica also has credentials in game development from Deakin Uni – and are half-way through their tale of a multi-player online game. Both Jess and Ayan admit to being video game junkies and comic addicts. They share the artwork and scripting between them. Artistically it’s a big ask to collaborate but they work together comfortably, Jess says. “We disagree but we have an understanding of what we both want to achieve so we work together to come up with a better idea,” she said. The couple are hoping to get their Template Heroes out to the market by midyear with a website kickstarter but, like many artists, are at the mercy of time and finances.

Canberra feels ‘pier pressure’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN FEDERAL MP Sarah Henderson has welcomed Mayor Darryn Lyons’s response to her deadline for action on revitalising central Geelong. The Liberal Member for Corangamite told a business breakfast last week council had six to 12 months to revitalise the city centre or else “we need to find another way to continue the transformation”. But this week she was “delighted” Cr Lyons was moving fast on seeking funding to build a Yarra St Pier as part of the revitalisation. She said Federal Government’s $30 million Regional Infrastructure Program fund presented the region “with a wonderful opportunity” for funding the pier, which would act as a cruise ship terminal. The terminal would provide
“an enormous boost to our local economy”, she said. Ms Henderson also welcomed other council action on the city centre. “With free parking delivered and a new independent planning committee about to be launched, it’s clear that much-needed action by the bay has begun. “Delivering the further transformation our city needs will require a collective effort from all levels of government. I’m delighted our government has delivered much-needed funding support to help drive this transformation.” Cr Lyons said revitalising central Geelong was “right up there” on his priority list. “A vibrant, bustling city that’s full of life and atmosphere will deliver flow-on effects for the entire region - I’m talking more jobs and more investment regionwide.
“I want to double the number of people living in central Geelong and I want to see the number of students studying in the CBD doubled as well.” Cr Lyons said council had earmarked “considerable funding” for its central Geelong action plan. Council would also seek federal funding for the pier, he said. “As soon as the Prime Minister announced the fund had been increased I was straight onto Sarah to make sure Yarra St Pier is at the forefront of her mind. “The new pier is a vital piece of the puzzle. It will play a major role in revitalising Geelong’s city centre. “Cruise ship tourism is big business ... it’s the fastest growing travel sector in the world.” LETTERS, PAGE 14

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THERE were few surprises for the Geelong region in this year’s state budget, with most major announcements already revealed over the last few weeks. With state government firmly in election mode, the big ticket items all confirmed previous announcements, including the west section of East West Link and various school upgrades. Notable omissions included any funding for Mayor Darryn Lyons’ pet Yarra St Pier project or further dollars for Geelong’s arts precinct. The budget did promise $13 million for the Pioneer Rd duplication to Meadowvale Rd and $1.3 million for continued planning of the Avalon Airport Rail Link. There was also $400,000 to upgrade bus interchanges at North Shore and Moorabool St
and $500,000 to investigate the long-awaited Drysdale by-pass. The budget committed $8.7 million to help support Victorian-based defence and aerospace manufacturers secure major contracts. Mayor Darryn Lyons said he would “seek clarity on what this means for Geelong’s Land 400 bid”. A budget of $220 million to build the Mildura to Geelong rail standardisation link coupled with a Food Into Asia Action Plan could be an economic boost for the region. “Geelong’s food producers will be keen to share in the $35.4 million allocated in today’s state budget for the plan,” Cr Lyons said. “The standardisation of the Mildura to Geelong rail link provides a great opportunity to increase trade through the Geelong
Port and potentially supports Avalon Airport plans to serve as a hub for trade into China.” Geelong’s stand-alone tourist body was snubbed with a $50 million allocation to upgrade the Great Ocean Road. Bellarine Labor MP Lisa Neville said the budget was “another big disappointment for Geelong”. “There is very little strategic investment to create jobs and help build the local economy. Funding to improve services is almost negligible. “There is nothing for retraining to assist Alcoa workers and nothing new in funding for skills or training more broadly,” she said. Lara MP John Eren said it was a “desperate budget by a desperate Premier which will do nothing to address the crisis in jobs, health and education for the Geelong community”.

We are recruiting for a study exploring early childhood play experiences of young people who have had anorexia nervosa. The study is being carried out here in Geelong at Deakin University. Early play helps children develop social skills and thinking skills, which are developed further in adolescence. Knowing about early play will help us understand how these skills are developed in young people with anorexia nervosa. This knowledge could lead to new interventions. The study would involve 2 conversations with you about your memories of your or your child’s play. Rail PSO patrols for Geelong PASSENGERS moved along nervously as a man brutally kicked and screamed profanities at his bike at North Geelong station at 6.45 last Thursday evening. The behaviour is the sort that might be reduced, at least at Geelong station, with the deployment of protective services officers by the State Government this week. But commuters might care to watch their step as well. Police Minister Kim Wells, along with local MPs and Liberal candidates, were out in force plugging the Geelong PSOs - but the officers, by the Government’s own
admission, have issued 20,000 infringements at stations across rail network in the past two years. “People who use trains have told us that they welcome the rollout of PSOs at rail stations,” South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said. “Their presence helps to reduce crime on our rail stations and also increases perceptions of safety for Victorians who might otherwise avoid train travel at night.” But PSOs working at train stations came under criticism last December for issuing fines without proper legal authority, leading to the withdrawal of
more than 300 fines. PSOs have also come under fire for issuing hundreds of fines to disabled, mentally ill and homeless people for minor infringements. The Government has 700 PSOs across 114 stations, patrolling from 6pm until after the last train at night. It plans to recruit and deploy 940 PSOs to suburban rail stations and regional centres by November. Police Minister Wells said the Geelong PSO presence was a “major investment in community safety for Geelong”. He did not say how many PSOs would operate at Geelong or if any would be deployed to North Geelong.

GEELONG should overcome job losses at Alcoa and Ford to resemble the Brisbane-Gold Coast growth corridor in future, according to Deakin University Professor Richard Reed. Analyst Australian Property Monitors (APM) last week cautioned about the redundancies having an impact on the Geelong market but Prof Reed cited several factors that would retain local housing’s strength. Prof Reed, chair in property and real estate within Deakin’s business and law faculty, said lead time, proximity to Melbourne, upward pressure on metropolitan prices and low interest rates would help safeguard Geelong’s property prices. “There has been a substantial amount of time for the market to adjust to any changes in the employment market as these were signalled some time ago. There isn’t a market shock as such,” Prof Reed said. “The very close proximity of Geelong to Melbourne is the single largest factor that will ensure there’s minimal effect on the housing market. Many workers live in Geelong and are employed in Melbourne, especially in the western suburbs of Melbourne. “The excellent road transport route between Melbourne and Geelong is a major factor here, as well and the relatively cheap

GROWTH: Professor Richard Reed. cost of rail transport. If Geelong was located some distance from Melbourne, like Bendigo for example, then this would be a different scenario. “However, as Melbourne expands further west in the corridor towards Geelong this will continue to place higher demand on property in suburbs in Geelong, especially eastern Geelong.” APM senior economist Andrew Wilson warned last week that Geelong housing would have “a price to pay if the economy deteriorates”. New South Wales’ Wollon-
gong sustained a marginal fall in median house prices after steel industry jobs were culled in 2011 but values picked up again to higher levels in 2013. Prof Reed said “record high immigration” into Victoria, especially Melbourne, placed pressure on Melbourne house prices, making Geelong look very attractive”. Geelong would benefit from its proximity to Melbourne to have a “distinct advantage over other regional cities”. “In the future, this may resemble the Brisbane-Gold Coast growth corridor and the transport infrastructure in place greatly assists this scenario,” Prof Reed said. “Increasingly, many buyers are seeking property on the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast, which over the long term will likely challenge the Mornington Peninsula as the preferred beach location. “This has been assisted by the Geelong bypass and also the superior access direct to Melbourne from Geelong rather than via the eastern Melbourne suburbs.” Prof Reed said property was considered a safe investment amid record low interest rates. “This has resulted in high demand for value-for-money property, especially property located close to the waterfront to satisfy Australia’s love affair with the water.”

A percentage of sales will help fund Bravehearts’ education program, teaching Geelong children personal safety through mascot Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show. Leading Geelong artists Lianne Gough, Lisa Wang, Jacinta Leitch and Tony Bramwell are all exhibiting works. Geelong Art Society’s Sue Robinson praised the charity. “Bravehearts does an amazing job at protecting and educating local children, Ms Robinson said. “Imagine displaying a piece of amazing artwork in your home or business and telling friends and family that the purchase helped to fund services for Australian children affected by sexual assault. Geelong Bravehearts chair Brian Bull encouraged art lovers to peruse the exhibition to
The petition calls for Health Minister David Davis to urgently intervene, citing deep community concern. “The minister must act now and call a halt to the process so that the residents and the broader community can be consulted and all the options considered, Ms Neville said. “The recent rally reflected community distress and anger and the proposed sale has also been condemned by (Geelong’s) council and Cr Helene Camerron, mayor of Borough of Queenscliff. Portarlington Community Association convenor John Turner said the Bellarine Peninsula’s only public notfor-profit residential aged care facility should not be sold to a private company until BCH had explored every other option. “Private companies have to make a profit and provide a return to their shareholders, he said. “What does this mean for the many residents who can’t afford private care? Do they have to leave the Bellarine and all that’s familiar to them?
By NOEL MURPHY A PETITION to save Portarlington aged care home Ann Nichol House has landed in state parliament. Bellarine MP Lisa Neville tabled the petition amid a furious community backlash to a Bellarine Community Health (BCH) plan to sell the home despite earlier assuring the public it was not for sale. Ms Neville said a stand-off while BCH undertook further due diligence on the sale had left families uncertain whether loved ones would be ejected from the facility. “It’s a worry for them that an announcement could be made any day, maybe tomorrow, maybe in a couple of months, she told the Independent after tabling the 1360-signature petition. “It’s disappointing that as late as a couple of weeks before saying they were going to sell it they were telling people, ‘No, no, no, everything’s the same’. “People feel very betrayed that they changed their mind.

Society and local artists in the area, he said. “I urge everyone in the community to head down to the exhibition to not only support local talent but the most precious members of the commu-
nity - our kids. The exhibition will run from 9am to 5pm 10 to 11 May and will include tea, coffee, finger food and a raffle. Entry is $2 or a donation.

PLANNING COMMITTEE MEETING The next Meeting of the Planning Committee will be held at the Council Conference and Reception Centre, City Hall, Little Malop Street, Geelong on Tuesday 20 May at 5.00pm.
FORMER WAR MEMORIAL KINDERGARTEN WHITTINGTON For over 60 years the War Memorial Kindergarten and Infant Welfare Centre at 17 Townsend Road Whittington has been providing children’s services to the local community. Due to falling enrolments the premises are no longer used for this purpose. The premises were established as a living war memorial and a plaque on the building recognises members of the local community who lost their lives in World War 2. Community members with an interest in the war memorial aspects of the premises are invited to a meeting to discuss the future of the premise and the memorial plaque. The meeting will be held at the Whittington Senior Citizens Hall, 50 Westmoreland Street Whittington from 6.00pm – 7.00pm Wednesday 21 May 2014.
The City of Greater Geelong is reviewing its General Local Law 2005. Members of the community are invited to express their views at any of three open public forums or online. Local laws are made by Council for benefit of the community. The objectives of the General Local Law 2005 are to provide for the peace, order and good government of the district, promote a physical and social environment free of hazards to health and to prevent and suppress nuisances which may affect the enjoyment of life and/or the health and safety or persons or the environment. They also include offences, penalties and permits. WHAT IS, OR MIGHT BE, INCLUDED IN THE LOCAL LAW? • numbers of pets allowed • cleaning up after dogs
• footpath trading and outdoor dining
• the service and consumption of alcohol on footpaths and reserves
NORTHERN ARC – MASTERPLAN The Northern ARC (Arts, Recreation and Community) Master Plan is an exciting new project led by the City of Greater Geelong to create a health and wellbeing hub in northern Geelong. The Master Plan will consider future opportunities for the current Council facilities on site and the civic land around them, including Waterworld Leisure Centre, Corio Library and Centenary Hall.
• smoking in public places
• use of parks and reserves
• camping on public and private land • control of private fireworks
• dilapidated buildings and unsightly land • use of nature strips.
WE ARE SEEKING YOUR OPINION AND SUGGESTIONS Are our local laws working? Are they too restrictive? Do we have too many? Or do we need any new local laws?

HELP KIDS GET BEHIND THE WHEEL
THANKYOU TO OUR WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS!
This is your opportunity to help young people participate fully in a better community. We are looking for volunteers with driving experience to help our young learner drivers gain on the road experience through our L2P program. All it takes is one hour a week.
Did you know the volunteers in our region contribute approximately 13 million hours every year through an estimated 100,000 volunteer roles? This is equivalent to 6,600 full-time workers!
L2P is a program which provides access to mentors / supervising drivers for young learner drivers who are facing significant barriers to gaining-on-road experience.
We send out a huge thankyou to everyone who contributes time to volunteering – helping strengthen our communities and make better lives for others.
Such barriers might include no access to a vehicle or a supervising driver. A 4 star ANCAP rated car is provided by the program, all insurances are covered and training is provided.
To celebrate National Volunteers Week and Neighbourhood House Week we put out a call for community centres and organisations to send in profiles of their special volunteers. Be inspired and scroll through the stories and photos at www.geelongaustralia.com.au/volunteers
Training will be held in Geelong on the following dates: • Saturday 7 June - Full Day • Sunday 8 June - Half Day
Would you like to find out more about volunteering? Contact Volunteering Geelong who match people with volunteer roles on 5221 1377 or www.volunteeringgeelong.org.au. It’s free!

Paying up for broadband wait By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN TELSTRA is asking Geelong broadband customers to pay for internet connection before telling them whether it’s actually available, according to federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson. Ms Henderson said many home buyers were discovering they had no guarantee of broadband even it it was previously available at the properties they bought. “I’m concerned Telstra is requiring customers to sign up to long-term contracts to place an order for broadband where no ports to connect broadband customers to the local exchange are available.” Ms Henderson said residents
expressed frustration at inadequate or non-existent broadband during two community consultations. “I’m also concerned about the door-to-door sales practices of telecommunications companies. A number of residents spoke out about sales people signing (them) up to broadband contracts after falsely promising broadband connection was available. “This is misleading and deceptive and needs to stop.” Marshall’s Laura Carlin, who attended one of the consultation meetings, said she had to “fight tooth and nail” with Telstra for six months for broadband. Ms Carlin and partner Ryan Allison were told they needed a
telephone line installed and to pay line rental for a non-existent service just to get on the waiting list. “We were getting frustrated by all the different responses. We were told one thing and someone else would tell us something completely different. “Some of our friends have been waiting longer than us and still don’t have any internet. People need to know what’s going on.” Telstra Country Wide area general manager Duane Dalton said existing infrastructure in local exchanges was struggling to meet demand. “There may be some individual reasons customers still do not get the internet speeds they ex-
pect from their service. These include a customer’s distance from the exchange, their own equipment and whether or not they’re served by the specific parts of the exchange that have received an upgrade.” Mr Dalton said Telstra customers at Leopold, Belmont, Ocean Grove, Lorne and Queenscliff would experience faster internet speeds on their ADSL service following infrastructure upgrades. “With the NBN at different stages, Telstra locally wants to make sure we continue to invest and look at areas that are impacted. We’ll continue to work with Sarah to make sure we’re aligned to deliver for our customers.”

such as Brougham, Ryrie and Moorabool. Re-marked lines showed reconfigured bays. With a couple of hundred extra trucks on Ryrie any given day, courtesy City Hall’s CBD truck trial, reversing a sedan into space clearly meant for a Barina must be like manna to Geelong’s panelbeaters. Given traffic flow problems, the nose-first option – if it can be staged successfully – warrants Olympic sport status.
VicRoads’ advice says you must leave at least one metre between vehicles. Problem is, a fair swag of parking bays don’t provide anything like a metre either end of a regulation parked car. Ten centimetres is more like it. Inadequate parking was clearly identified as a key issue at last year’s mayoral election. But the Band-Aids aren’t working. – Noel Murphy

Letters Kids riding into danger ROADSAFE Barwon is concerned children are cycling across pedestrian crossings on their way to school instead of walking their bikes safely across the roadway. A recent accident highlighted the dangerous practice of cycling instead of walking while using pedestrian crossings. Children aged under 12 are allowed to cycle on a footpath and cyclists over 18 can supervise, providing examples of safe riding skills. Bike education programs in schools also teach children that cyclists, including grown-ups, must dismount to cross the road within the white-painted lines at traffic lights and pedestrian crossings. Limited exceptions include separated paths with cycling signals, such as Swanston St. However road rule 248, to dismount at crossings, seems often misunderstood, resulting in dangerous situations for cyclists and turning drivers. Crossing supervisors at intersections school ensure everyone walking crosses crossing safely but not every crossing can be supervised. Road Safe Barwon encourages parents to set a good example and to ensure their children know before setting off to school that they must put on a helmet, always give way to pedestrians on paths and dismount at crossings. Bright, reflective clothing is also recommended as winter approaches. Caroline Maplesden RoadSafe Barwon deputy chair
DEPI’s burnt Breakfast IN MAY last year Department of Environment and Primary Industry (DEPI) lit a planned bushfire at Breakfast Creek, in the Great Otway National Park. The upper part of the burned area contained fern gullies and a damp, shrubby understorey. Prior to starting the planned bushfire, logging machinery was used to push over hundreds of trees surrounding the proposed bushfire area. As the understorey was damp, DEPI staff had difficulty lighting and keeping the fire going, even using a helicopter dropping incendiaries. As a result, the green moist vegetation was killed but incompletely consumed, leaving standing dead vegetation, actually increasing the fuel load. Additionally, for weeks afterward there was the constant sound of trees crashing to the ground as their bases slowly smouldered and burnt on the
might face and what Australia will be like in 50 or 100 or even in 20 years if we do little or nothing now. Will choices of where to live be limited by water availability and rising sea levels? Will people be able to have gardens? What will happen to the availability and quality of food? Will weather be conducive to outdoor sports and backyard barbecues? Will travel and beach holidays be restricted? Will new health problems emerge and existing ones worsen? Will floods and droughts, tsunamis, earthquakes, cyclones, El Ninos and El Ninas be more frequent and more severe? I don’t know the answers. What I know is that they don’t have to arise if we consider our future and the future of coming generations and plan and act. Please tell politicians you demand action on climate change now. Confusion over Libs on the loose I DON’T know whether Sarah Henderson is confused but it sure seems like it (Independent, 2 May). What seat is it she represents or is she on council now and I wasn’t told? Or is she making a tilt at local politics seeing because she is completely out of her depth in Canberra? It seems to be the common shortcoming of Liberal politicians and candidates that they can’t stick to their knitting. Only last week Paula Kontelj was holding forth on the need for a hospital in the northern suburbs. Now I understand that Ms
Kontelj will stand for the seat of Geelong at the next state election. Goodness knows John Eren could do with a bit of a shake-up in the seat of Lara. Why doesn’t she run against him? Why are the politicians and candidates deliberately trying to confuse local, state and federal issues? Do they think we are all stupid? Do they think we don’t notice when they try to change the subject like this? Kevin V Russell Geelong
inside. This added more fuel to the fuel load in the form of dead leaves, twigs and branches. Deliberate burning of forests in Victoria is unscientific and simply for political show. Meanwhile our precious flora and fauna is being destroyed. Although the Bushfires Royal Commission did make some sensible and effective recommendations concerning improved land-use planning, they were largely over-shadowed by media sensationalism and a government focus on more-spectacular, controversial and counter-effective recommendations such as planned bushfires. The Victorian Government should re-deploy DEPI fire-lighting staff to remove the pest plants and animals that have now invaded previously DEPI-burnt areas. Stephen Chenery Winchelsea
Split pension ages THERE is some concern regarding extending the age of eligibility for the pension to 70. When the pension was introduced in 1908 most people entered the workforce at 12 or 14 and received the pension at 65, giving them a working life

of over 50 years. Today the average young person doesn’t enter the workforce until their 20s. With a working life of 50 years they would be eligible for the pension at 70. Most manual workers usually enter the workforce much earlier than those who undertake higher education, so their 50-year period to qualify for a pension would start when they begin working and paying tax, which would make them eligible for the pension around the age of 65. Questions without answers WILL future generations asking why we allowed climate change to happen? Why we didn’t rise up and demand that governments stop subsidising coal-mining and fossil fuels and lead a conversion to renewable energy? Why we didn’t take to the streets in huge numbers and demand action? Why we elected politicians who ignored the subject or when pressed made foolish and dismissive responses? I try to imagine what lives today’s young people

THE PROBLEM with the current debate over climate change is that its incredibility narrowly focused. Are people who advocate humanity’s carbon emissions (CO2) is driving dangerous climate change serious? They must be, given the heat their anxiety generates. Do they really think Earth is a closed system and that our weather is not influenced by the solar system? It’s as if cosmic forces play no play no part in shaping Earth’s weather or, if they do, it’s only minor. Daily we are bombarded with the message CO2 is driving alleged global warming. Any competent climate scientist knows that many factors influence climate, including forces both from within and outside Earth’s atmosphere. The obsession with honing in on one tiny component in the atmosphere and attributing to it some mythical, even god-like quality, of CO2 as the principal driver, the principle shaper, of weather on this planet, is completely misguided. Whether warming or cooling, the weather is not being controlled or driven by CO2, natural or man-made. Alan Barron Grovedale

Director gets fresh with Annie By SAM BRIMACOMBE A local production of award-winning musical Annie concludes its six-show season in Geelong this weekend. Director Bryce Baumgarten is presenting a fresh take on the 1977 production in his second show for Geelong Lyric Theatre Society. Set in the 1930s, the story follows young orphan Annie as she sets out to discover the identity of her parents with the aid of Daddy Warbucks, despite oppressive orphanage matron Miss Hannigan and her devilish partner, Rooster. “I’ve musically directed and choreographed productions before but it’s the first time I’m directing in Geelong,” Baumgarten said. His passion for theatre includes a history of touring shows in Australia, New Zealand and parts of Asia. “I spent a bit of time travelling around with Nickelodeon, doing kids productions, mostly. After that I got my teaching degree - I wanted to stop living out of a suitcase and settle down,” he laughed. Baumgarten said his work as a school teacher helped him immensely when working with children during Annie rehearsals. “It definitely helps with communicating what you want from the kids,” he explained. “Anyway, I’m a big kid myself, so we get along really well. With
kids it’s about managing their emotions and work ethic. “It’s about making sure that they learn their stuff but they’re having fun at the same time.” The young cast, including sevento-eight-year-olds, features Tayla Gartner and Delia McBurney splitting the lead role. Baumgarten said Annie was a passion project for him because he believed promoting local talent was important. Geelong was renowned for producing plenty of talent for its size, he said. “To be involved and to promote an active and healthy theatre scene in Geelong, as long as I get that opportunity I’ll be happy. “It’s really important that we try to have good shows that people want to come and see. It’s important that local talent helps to enrich local communities rather than being shipped out.” The show also featured two young actors of a different species, Baumgarten said. “We’ve got two dogs in the show and my heart is going to be in my throat every time the dogs run across the stage,” he laughed. “They say not to work with kids or animals and I’m doing both!” Geelong Performing Arts Centre hosts Annie this Friday night along with a matinee and evening show Saturday.

By SAM BRIMACOMBE DOCTORS held little hope for family man Michael Stangel after invasive surgery for brain and heart tumours in 2013. But after competing in television‘s The Voice the same year, the Geelong cancer survivor has released debut single Come on Over. The song debuted at number one on the Australian iTunes blues charts last month, knocking aside US star Jason Derulo. His fans’ support for the song “overwhelmed” Stengel. “It was incredible,” he said. “I just thought it tested the fan base and they responded really well. It was a great feeling.” Judges on The Voice, Deltra Goodrem and Joel Madden, praised Stangel for his raw, gutsy voice. Madden described him as “a fighter, a brawler and a representation of Australia”.
Stangel said The Voice helped shape how he made music, particularly when it came to finding an audience. “I found it changed the way I approached the music business. “There were little facets from everybody on the show that changed the way I promote my music. “It’s opened up a whole new audience. The experience was fantastic.” Stangel has been in the music industry in many shapes and forms over the past 33 years. He has produced and written music, owned a recording label, toured Melbourne and performed in countless bands. But he found his niche in singing. “I’ll keep on doing it all till I find something I’m good at,” he laughed. “I started out as a drummer and just progressed to different
instruments. The last thing I did was sing but singing has been the thing that has given people the opportunity to know who I am.” Stangel said he would continue releasing singles until his album was out. The album, An Aussie Spirit, was due for release later this year after Come on Over’s local debut at Beav’s Bar in Geelong from 6pm Sunday, he said. “We do this thing where we’re playing lots of instruments at the same time - singing, guitar, drums, all of it,” Stangel laughed. He forecast variety at the launch. “We do some really left of centre covers of songs and some original stuff that’s about to come out and some stuff that I did on the show.” Stangel said his guests would include fellow The Voice competitors Danny Ross and Kiyomi Vella.

HIGHER education’s not what it used to be these days. Take the Bachelor of Arts at Deakin University, for instance. Who would expect it to come with tomato, cheese, oregano, onion and garlic rather than a mortarboard and robe? That’s right, it’s a pizza, not a degree - and one of several academic culinary pursuits now available at Hub Bistro, in Deakin’s Waurn Ponds campus. The Botanist, The Statistician, The Magic Mayor, The Dean of Mexico and The Professor are some of the other tertiary-level pizzas available at this uber-funky new bistro-bar-café. Part of Geelong’s Big Group - the company of Geelong mayor
Darryn Lyons and which oversees Elephant and Castle Hotel, Pizzas with Attitude, The Eureka and Home House - Hub Bistro has proven an instant success with students. And more of the same is expected when it opens this week to the public. It’s not all clever pizzas, though. Hub Bistro has a goodly range of entrees, salads, “full-throttle” pub grub plus special nights for “tight a..e” burgers, seafood, pot and parmi deals and “wine down” Fridays. Throw in nightly theme events and specials and Hub Bistro has all the makings of an eclectic and colourful social communal space for students, staff and the public
to enjoy modern pub food and great music with beer, cider, wine and mineral water on tap, indoors or outside. “I’ve been really excited to invest in growing the future of the Geelong region and Deakin and as mayor I want to keep investing in Geelong,” Cr Lyons says. “The prices offer fantastic value for money. It’s not necessarily a money-maker for us but another investment in a quality atmosphere venue with bands, DJs and really making it a student-oriented hub for food beverage and entertainment.” Hub Bistro is on level two, Building JB, Deakin University Waurn Ponds, phone 5247 9209 or email hubbistro@deakin.edu.au.

Volunteers help disabled to choose McKillop carer call activities and games for participants as well as assisting at EdLinks. “It’s great when you see people achieving,” Pam says. Every year Karingal recognises volunteer achievements and milestones, with some volunteering with the organisation for over 25 years. Karingal volunteers play a vital role in supporting people with a disability to be actively involved in the community by sharing their skills and experience in over 100 different activities weekly.
MACKILLOP Family Services believes being a foster carer is one of the ultimate volunteering roles. The organisation hopes National Volunteer Week will inspire more people in Geelong to think again about foster caring. “It takes someone extraordinary to be a foster carer,” says MacKillop’s spokesperson. “Each day we’re inspired by the remarkable commitment shown by our foster carers.” MacKillop provides foster care in Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast for some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the area.
Pam Wintershoven and Xody.
Many of these children have not had the best start in life and many more foster carers are desperately needed. “All you need is the patience, resilience and understanding to support a child in need,” the spokesperson advises. Foster carers with MacKillop come from all types of backgrounds and families. A variety of caring options are available, including full-time, part-time and respite. More information is available by phoning 5278 9211 or visiting mackillop.org.au.

B ecome a foster carer Make a difference in Geelong, Bellarine & the Surf Coast. Choose from different foster caring options with MacKillop Family Services and help a local child or young person reach their full potential. David and his four-year-old son Jackson live in Geelong. David became a foster carer because he wanted to give something back to his community and support other local families. “Because I’m single and already have a child I hadn’t considered being a foster carer. I assumed you had to be in a long-term relationship. Now I know what maters most is providing a safe and nuturing home for a child in need.”

EACH year over 120 Karingal volunteers provide 16,000 hours of service so people with a disability can live the lives they choose. For Pam Wintershoven, seeing the progress of Karingal’s EdLinks program participant Xody has been a highlight of her five years volunteering with Karingal. “She’s someone who’s really keen to go on with things,” Pam says. “She’s now writing properly and last year she started to read. It makes you happy.” Pam and husband Chris run

O’BRIEN’S Redgum is a reputable, well-established business with Firewood Association of Australia accreditation. Owner Ken O’Brien agrees with Greenpeace founder Patrick Moore that wood is “simply the most-abundant, biodegradable and reusable material on the planet”. O’Brien’s redgum firewood is legally harvested from sustainable resources under licence and the most rigorous regulations. “We challenge firewood users to check where their wood is coming from,” Mr O’Brien advises. “Ask the supplier whether it’s legally and sustainably sourced from renewably-managed resources, whether it’s well-seasoned, clean and has gone over a certified weigh bridge. “Make sure you’re warming your home, without warming the planet.” O’Brien’s has a large, permanent stockpile of seasoned firewood, delivering premium, split redgum ready to burn. “Redgum burns hotter and longer, makes less smoke and ash and produces excellent coals and heat, so it’s exceptional fuel for slow-combustion heaters,” Mr O’Brien says. “Buying by weight is the best way to purchase firewood. We have a certified weighbridge at our wood yard and excellent all-weather access. “Our unique firewood cleaner ensures debris free wood, so you’re paying for wood, not dirt.” Bulk loads are available by pick-up or delivery, along with fast, friendly service and a range of payment options. DR Clean Air Australia specialises in duct cleaning, repairs, servicing and mould detection. Operator Matt McMahon is alarmed about recent rodent damage to heating systems, with rats, mice and possums eating through household central ducting. “The rodents have been making homes in the ducting and breeding there,” Matt says. “Hair, urine, faeces and bad smells manage to make their way through the ducting and into the homes triggering allergic responses such as asthma, headaches and skin problems such as eczema.” Matt advises that feelings of “stuffy head” syndrome and fatigue could be linked to indoor air quality. “People are just starting to recognise the importance of keeping their ducting clean.” In recent years comparative risk studies performed by the US EPA and its science advisory board have consistently ranked indoor air pollution among the
Dr Clean Air Australia’s Matt McMahon. top five environmental risks to public health. Poor indoor air quality in doctor’s surgeries, nursing homes, office environments and homes also leads to increased spread of viruses. “We advise people completing renovations or moving in to a new home or rental to get their ducts inspected,” Matt says.
“With winter here, now is a good time to have your central heating and return air filter system checked.” Dr Clean Air has three tips for the quality of ducted air: have a qualified plumber service units every two years; have ducts cleaned every two years; and remember the location of return air filters to ensure maintenance. 1133468-FA19-14

Free ‘legal health’ checks, play By Jillian Chapman, Barwon Community Legal Service TO celebrate Law Week, Barwon Community Legal Service is hosting a free play and offering no-charge “legal health checks”. Most people would agree visiting a doctor before becoming sick is preferable to seeking medical treatment after falling ill. The same goes for dealing with legal matters. People consult lawyers for a range of personal and business matters. For example, they might have a problem with their landlord, partner or neighbour et cetera. You should consult a lawyer if any of these issues affect you, a loved one or friend.
Jillian Chapman Think of it as the legal version of an annual medical check-up and don’t wait until a crisis arises.
Dealing with legal issues before they become serious is always better because it’s less stressful. Free legal health checks and appointments with one of our lawyers are available by phoning 1300 430 599 In partnership with Deakin University, Barwon Community Legal Service will hosting You the Man, a play about dating violence that addresses bystander intervention and prevention. The play begins 10am Tuesday at Deakin University’s Waterfront Campus. Anyone wanting to attend the play and its discussion panel can RSVP to jillian.chapman@barwoncls.org.au or phone 1300 430 599.

IndyMotor Falling in love By DEREK OGDEN THAT 21st century automotive niche, the hot five-door coupe has a new member in the shape of the Renault Clio GT, a brother to the price-point base Clio and the hothatch Clio RS. With three-door car sales on the slide, the latest addition to the fourth generation Clio follows the trend in deserting a threedoor body for a five-door set-up with retained coupe characteristics aided by hidden rear-door handles, therefore retaining some appeal to the fewer-door fans. Buyers want the convenience of back doors so the kids can get in and out of the back seats without the parents having to leave their front seats. The all-new Renault Clio range has been lowered, is longer, wider and with an increased wheelbase over its predecessor, presenting a more cocky look with handling to match. Occupants also reap the benefit with more space which, with high quality materials in the surroundings, puts them in mind of a more expensive, premium vehicle. The new Clio variant comes in two specification levels - GT and GT Premium - powered by a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated with a six-speed automatic transmission. Surprisingly for a European car, no manual model makes it down-under - which is a sign of the times. Sitting in the middle of the light car segment, Clio GT prices start at $25,290 for the entry-level model and top out at $28,790 for the GT Premium. A long list of options can be added to the GT while the GT Premium is already well specced with such things as 17-inch anthracite alloy wheels, rear lip spoiler, side sills, rear diffuser, front and rear bumpers including GT bumper, steering column mounted gearshift paddles, GT badging for sports seats, leather steering wheel, Renault Sport kickplates and hands-free keycard. Sitting lower to the ground, the Clio GT looks to the hot hatch RS for its appearance. There are pronounced shoulder lines above the front and rear wheel arches, steeply raked windscreen and small side windows in proportion to the bodywork. The Renault diamond badge

In addition, exclusive GT badging is visible on both the front and rear of the vehicle. Sporty styling goes indoors with bolstered-sport seats, upholstered in an exclusive GT finish with GT embroidery on the head rests, snugly holding anyone with up to an average back width. Wider backs may find comfort elusive. The upper part of the softtouch dashboard features a speckled grey finish. The leather-trimmed sports steering wheel carries GT badging and dark metal gear shift paddles are in a fixed position behind the steering wheel. Storage includes a 1.2-litre tray above the glove box, two cup holders and additional storage for small items between the front seats, while each door has a bin that can carry a 1.5-litre bottle. The new Clio features two levels of in-car entertainment platforms - Renault’s Media Nav and R-Link. Built into the centre console, the Media Nav system, with seven-inch touchscreen, provides basic multimedia functions and is standard in the Clio GT. The Clio GT Premium has Renault’s R-Link entertainment sys-
tem (an option with the GT), also a seven-inch touchscreen, voice commands and a home page that can be personalised by the user for safer, but still potentially distracting, access to key functions. A menu with six icons provides access to navigation, multimedia, phone, vehicle, services and apps. A quirky app, the R-Sound Effect, installed on Renault R-Link in the Clio GT Premium, enables occupants to enjoy a series of engine sounds selected by the driver. The sounds - a Renault Sport race car, a V6 engine, and four other engine sounds, including a Tardis-like tone of the future vary with the car’s speed and acceleration, and are played through the vehicle’s audio speakers. The Clio GT is powered by the Renault TCe 120 80 kW 1.2-litre direct-injection turbo engine mated to a six-speed EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) Getrag transmission, serving up official fuel consumption of 5.2-litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle. With a maximum 190 Nm of torque on tap, zero to 100km/h is achieved in 9.4 seconds on the way to a top speed of 199 km/h. The Clio GT puts out a classleading 120 grams per kilometre of carbon dioxide.

IndySport Cats hit reset button By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN MANY Geelong players are off enjoying some downtime this week as the Cats enjoy a bye in round eight. Star defender Harry Taylor will spend a week finding the sun on the Gold Coast. “I need to replenish my vitamin D stocks because they’ve been a bit low the last couple of weeks,” Taylor laughed. “We haven’t played well the last two weeks but to get the four points (against Richmond) was really important for us. “Luckily, some of our key guys got up and lifted for us when they needed to. “We’ll get onto our mini-break and be happy with our form but we’re certainly not content yet. “It’s important that we reset and hit the ground running for what’s going to be a big three weeks after that break.”
BREAK: Harry Taylor was looking forward to the bye. Picture: REG RYAN Geelong’s coaches won’t enjoy too much downtime, with planning for a tough round-nine task away against Fremantle topping their agenda. Then follows a big Friday night
game against North Melbourne at home and a Thursday night fixture in Sydney. Coach Chris Scott will hope his players are replenished and raring to go after the break. He freely admits some marked improvement is required just to maintain ladder position, let alone to progress. Scott was happy with the Cats’ win-loss record so far despite being “a long way from playing our best footy”. “I think we’re pretty content. We’re in a good spot but well aware that we need to improve. “I’d prefer that we were sevenzip to be honest. I think we should win every game we play if we play our best - we’ve got high standards. “But if you take a step back ... it looks pretty good. “I think we’ve been outstanding at times in the first seven weeks but at other times we’ve
been pretty average, therein lies the challenge: to make sure that we can maintain that outstanding footy for longer periods.” Geelong has been susceptible to fast-break footy through the middle of the ground against Port Adelaide, to which it lost, and Richmond, against which it hung on to narrowly win. Two trends emerged in both games: poor goal-kicking and the up-and-down form of some younger players, with the old hands being relied upon to get the side over the line. Cats skipper Joel Selwood enjoyed Brownlow Medal favouritism through the first few rounds but the publicity seems to have attracted a tight tag from teams in the last few weeks. It was only in the last quarter against Richmond that Selwood finally shrugged the tag and had the kind of impact fans are used to seeing from him.
Warriors challenged after consecutive losses By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong suffered its second consecutive loss going when it went down to a down 2-3 to a determined Bendigo in Saturday’s National Premier League football clash of Victorian regional clubs. The Warriors went a goal down in the third minute as keeper Frano Saric pushed a tame cross into the path of goal for an unmarked George Slefendorfas to tap home. Michael Boyar almost made amends immediately after but blasted over the bar from five metres. The Warriors looked lethargic and lacked build-up to their play, while Bendigo was first to the ball, further dampening the locals’ spirits. In the 38th minute Bendigo midfielder Matthew Breeze launched a long-range effort that caught Saric flat-footed and the midfield ball-watching, putting Geelong 0-2 behind. With only minutes left in the first half, the Warriors’ Boyar and Robert Zadworny had chances but they weren’t enough to test Sebastien Mattei in goals for Bendigo. The second half started with the visitors gifted a goal from an error when Matthew Breeze capitalised on a poor pass in defence by Reha Kurul at the 47th minute to go up 0-3.
With the contest slipping away, coach Ante Skoko looked to 16-year-old Nikola Jurkovic in the 52nd minute to replace Vito Cichello who took a hard knock to his back. Jurkovic provided determination to win every ball and the flowon lifted the Warriors. In the 70th minute Matthew Townley presented in the box for a solid header, finishing past Mattei and putting pressure back on Bendigo, which then began to panic with its possessions. Zadworny came close minute later when he caught Mattei offguard only to see his strike whistle past the post. In the 90th minute Jurkovic was rewarded for his toil, slotting in from close range setting up a tense finish to the match, However, it just wasn’t enough for the Warriors to salvage a draw. Bendigo coach Steve Martin was excited about his team’s first win of the year, saying the region should be proud of the fledgling club. Warriors’ assistant Ivan Skoko emphasised his disappointment in North Geelong’s lack of leadership to recover from mistakes but drew on the positive of Jurkovic’s performance. North Geelong faces a tough

Cichello also leaving the ground early on Saturday with a back injury, the Warriors coaches will look to the team’s youngsters to step up and into some important roles.

Of fish and farewells ANGLERS contended with rough conditions over the past week for some outstanding captures in fresh and saltwater alike. Tuna well over 100kg and any number of smaller fish to 30kg were caught off Portland when the weather allowed. Skirted lures such as Rickter and Tornados ever-popular bibbed Rapala X Raps worked well. Lorne Pier fired with a variety of species including salmon, mullet, trevally and barracouta, although the resident seals stole most of the catches. Paul Sheriff spun the coast where an offshore breeze helped him cast long into the big surf. On the afternoon high tide he managed to land around a dozen salmon, the best pushing 1.5kg. I spun the rocks at Cinema Point in difficult conditions for seven salmon over 1kg. Salmon were also caught off the Point Lonsdale Pier during the last two hours of the rising tide. Daniel Pratt fished the entrance to Swan Bay where he had no trouble bagging out on squid, with most close to 1kg. He then used his supply of fresh bait to catch 15 quality whiting and four nice flathead. Grant Mathews found squid on the shallow grass beds at Hermsley. Many were small but helped him catch two snapper and gummy shark each on the edge of Wilson Spit. Xavier Stephens drifted the Hermsely spoil grounds with soft plastics to catch two 48cm snapper and six flathead over 50cm. His best lure was the Gulp Turtleback Worm in the Pumpkin Green colour. Guy Leadings fished plastics around the moorings between Royal Geelong Yacht Club and Eastern Beach for a catch of pike, flathead, salmon and snapper. Troy Cunningham fished just out from the entrance to the grammar school lagoon on Monday morning, boating 17 whiting from 32cm to 34cm on pippies. Numerous shoals of salmon harassed baitfish in Corio Bay’s inner harbour, particularly around the grammar school,

North Shore rocks and Royal Geelong Yacht Club. In freshwater, Craig Porter trolled Lake Bullen Merri for a bag-limit catch of salmon. He had his downrigger set at 15m with Rapala F5s in the trout pattern. Bait anglers at the lake caught fish on bluebait and Powerbait but lures cast from the shore at first light also accounted for plenty of quality trout and salmon. Martin Banks continued putting in plenty of time at West Barwon Reservoir where he’s landed a brown trout on every outing. This week his biggest was 1.9kg and caught on a Daiwa Double Clutch lure in the black-and-gold colouration. The Barwon River in Geelong was slightly discolour due to recent rain, which seem to bring carp on the bite. Fish 6kg were taken between Queen’s Park Bridge and Fyans Park on unweighted corn or bread baits. Reasonable numbers of mulloway and some elephant fish were landed in the river’s estuary between the Sheepwash and Lake Connewarre. Bait and lures have taken mulloway, with sizes increasing. This is my last On the Bite report. After 35 years in the fishing industry it’s time for me to move into retirement and to do more fishing myself. Fishing World Geelong’s young gun angler, Chris Pitman, will continue bringing readers all the latest reports from near and far. Thanks to everyone who’s read my column over the years and good luck with your fishing endeavours in the future. Send reports and photos to info@raylongtackle.com.au or visit Chris at Ray Long’s Fishing World, 105 Shannon Ave, Manifold Heights.
