It’s home at last By JOELENE OGLE THE Grandison family couldn’t be happier to finally call Noosaville home, after a three-year battle to stay in their little piece of paradise. Stephen and Sarah Grandison first moved to Noosaville from the UK in 2011 with their children Ben, 13, Tom, 12, and Katie, 9. But despite the fact Stephen works as a local GP, and the family being heavily involved with the local community, the Department of Immigration deemed their son Tom, who has an intellectual impairment and epilepsy, as too expensive to keep. A three-year battle ensued but the family announced this week they had all received permanent residency visas. In a letter to Noosa Today to say thankyou for support, the Grandisons said the fight for visas had
been a “long and at time difficult process ... met with a mixture of initially disbelief, then relief, and now excitement”. “We have in truth been living in a kind of limbo for the last three years, not knowing whether we would be able to stay here or whether we would be returning at some point to the UK,” the letter read. “We managed to successfully negotiate the appeal process on the visa application, having initially been turned down based on Tom’s health assessment. “Our immigration lawyer was fantastic and the support we received from the local community was brilliant.
“We were amazed and humbled by the tremendous support we received throughout this process, and if anything, this support makes the outcome even better.” Throughout their fight, the Grandisons launched a petition that received over 3,000 signatures, and 120 personal letters of support from patients and the public, as well as letters from Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss and Noosa MP Glen Elmes. The Grandisons are now looking forward to planning the rest of their lives and hoping to become Australian citizens.

Booze blitz By JOLENE OGLE POLICE are reminding locals it can take up to six hours for alcohol to leave your system, after a recent blitz on early morning drink driving caught five people within an hour and a half. Noosa Heads Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said police would continue to run RBTs on major roads on Saturday and Sunday mornings, in a bid to reduce early-morning drink driving. The five drivers were caught driving over the limit in Tewantin two Sundays ago, with two more drink drivers caught in the same area last Sunday. “Many people think they are able to drive after a good night’s sleep, but it can take up to six hours for alcohol to completely leave your body,” he said. Snr Sgt McReight said police would continue to blitz early-morning drink driving.

Bonnie (second from left) and Janelle (third from left) with some of Sheep Thrills’ crocheters.
Enjoying a yarn and some Sheep Thrills By JOLENE OGLE THOSE driving past 61 Hilton Terrace in Tewantin may never guess that beyond the door of such an unassuming building lies a diverse group of women busily creating stunning pieces of art. But, behind the aquamarine wall, visitors will find an award-winning architect, ex-champion show jumper and a woman who used to teach inmates to sew - all crocheting, knitting, chatting and laughing. Welcome to Sheep Thrills, a place for women to gather, enjoy time-out and create something special. “It’s not just ‘nana knitting’, ex-
plained Sheep Thrills owner Bonnie O’Connell. “When people think of knitting and crocheting, people think its ugly stuff. “But there is so much more to it than nana squares. You can truly create something beautiful.” Knitting has always been a passion for Bonnie, who at one point specialised in custom pieces made to order. But it was when she moved to Australia eight years ago that Bonnie first tried crocheting. “I went to a knitting class to brush up and that’s where I met Janelle (Turley),” she said. “Janelle said to me ‘you’re not knitting, you’re crocheting’ and that was that.”
Janelle - who has taught crocheting, knitting and sewing to inmates at Bogga Road and Wacol prisons now runs the Sheep Thrills’ crochet and knit classes, offering two hours of instruction that will have participants creating a delicate shawl in no time. Together, Bonnie and Janelle have “joined forces” to create an environment that fosters creativity, relaxation and fun. “This is a phone-free-zone,” Bonnie said. “There are no clocks, no distractions. This is a place for people to come, buy some nice yarn, and take time out for themselves. “And we’re not only about ‘nana knitting’. We have women from the
age of 18 to 73 and older. We have women from all walks of life who simply want to create something beautiful while having a chat.” Janelle is now joined by Leah Hindman, who will help teach even more people the wonderful art of crochet and knitting. Sheep Thrills is open Wednesday and Friday, from 9.30am to 1pm, Thursday, from 10am to 1pm and Saturday, 9.30am to 11.30am. Classes are held every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, from 9.30am to 11.30am. Everything is supplied including a basic pattern, instruction notes and two hours’ instruction from Janelle.

Surf’s out for school
Appeal over Lake Weyba
By JONATHON HOWARD
By JOLENE OGLE
TROPICSURF Noosa manager, Tim Mitchell, fears a Noosa Council decision to reduce three licences to two for surfing lessons on Main Beach could jeopardise the future of his business and leave him jobless. Mr Mitchell said he received the news last week that Tropicsurf’s long-held licence Surf Permit 3 on Main Beach would be at risk. “It is deeply disappointing that council has made this decision to cut out the third licence on the beach, effectively shutting down one Noosa business in council’s ?rst meeting regarding beach permits,” he said. Council voted to change the three licence policy down to two in a split decision during a recent council meeting. The decision was made after council’s co-ordinator of property and land management, Clint Irwin, revealed there were 14 activities being undertaken by 11 permit holders. Main Beach surf school operators will now be forced to vie for one of only two allocated licences. “From reading the council minutes alone, the issues seem to be relating mainly to beach use and overcrowding. The three surf schools have worked well together over the difficult local government transition time but now have to go head to head
to gain one of the two permits,” Mr Mitchell said. “The fairest outcome would have occurred by just reducing surf school permit number one, bringing them in line with the other permits.” Mr Mitchell said surf permit one would be paying a lot less than it ever did under Noosa Council. “But it gets to keeps its large numbers, while I won’t have a job that hurts!” he said. Tropicsurf Noosa has been operating in Noosa for 25 years. The business made a decision to adopt a low-impact business model 10 years ago, which has a minimal number of four surfers in the water at any time. “Many of Noosa’s sons and daughters are employed by Tropicsurf in different luxury surf locations around the world, who naturally refer their guests back to their home,” Mr Mitchell said. “It would be disappointing in the least to have to say we can’t offer a service in our home town due to this decision. “The surf coaching licence we hold is pivotal in caring for our clients. “Tropicsurf feels we are well placed to get one of the remaining surf lesson licenses on Noosa Beach, but are saddened by the nature of this process that one business will cease to exist at the end of it.
Noosa swimmers train together By JORDAN CULLEN NOOSA Aquatic Centre has been home to swimmers from St Peter’s Western Swimming Club in the leadup to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games (23 July-3 August 2014) and the Rio Olympics in 2016. Noosa’s own Olympian Brittany Elmslie said while she loved Brisbane, “Noosa will always be home”. The three-time Olympic medallist has been training at the Noosa Aquatic Centre before the Swimming Australia Grand Prix in Canberra this weekend. “It’s great to be back in Noosa, it’s just an environment that I’m really familiar with,” she said. When she’s not in the pool or studying a bachelor of business at Griffith University, Brittany said she likes to get back to Noosa to go to the beach and “relax as much as possible”. Squad coach Michael Bohl has

Brittany said she enjoys the group training atmosphere. “It’s a great way to learn from all the other senior members in the team,” she said. 2008 Olympic gold and 2012 Olympic silver and bronze medallist Bronte Barratt agreed.

A LOCAL community group has slammed a developer’s decision to appeal the rejection of a proposed Lake Weyba development as “a total lack of respect for the community”. Northbrook Corporation Pty Ltd lodged an appeal in the Planning and Environment Court last Wednesday against Noosa Council and Sunshine Coast Council’s decision to reject their proposed residential development at Lake Weyba. Both councils rejected the proposed development, citing “unacceptable impacts on waterways and wetlands” among other environmental issues as the reasons for the rejection. But the 10-page appeal document said the proposed development would not significantly impact the environment, nor adversely impact koala conservation, Aboriginal cultural heritage values, or conflict with the Noosa Plan or Maroochy Plan 2000. Local community group, Friends of Lake Weyba (FoLW), have actively opposed the development proposal and this week slammed the developer’s decision to appeal the rejection. FoLW secretary Christine Tainsh said the proposed development would have created an “irreversible scar on the western shores of pristine Lake Weyba”. “There were over 1,000 public submissions objecting to Northbrook’s development proposal,” she said. “It was rejected by both Noosa Shire Council and Sunshine Coast Regional Council as clearly not complying with their respective town plans on many different levels, and the conditions imposed by the State Government’s Department of Environmental Heritage Protection rendered the proposal unworkable. “We believe that for the developer to appeal such an across the board, clearcut refusal of their proposal decries a total lack of respect for the community and their elected representatives.” Ms Tainsh said the developers would have another fight on their hands if their appeal was successful. “The Noosa community is exceptionally passionate about its vision for the future of the area embodied in the Noosa Plan,” she said. “If the developer wishes to defy this vision through the court system, they will find the community’s resolve will be very difficult to defeat.”

Farewelling a Noosa icon wear when on a night out with friends, attracting admiring and envious glances. As a friend innumerable people found his the shoulder they could cry on. He never judged, was never too busy. His open arms and home were a refuge for many. Three years ago, with some idea that time may not be on his side Peter moved to Thailand and found a new lease on life with relaxation, new friends and a new career once again as Mimi More, delighting tourists and locals alike. However a trip home and a medical check-up revealed that his life would now be measured in months. Like everything he did, he handled his treatment with humour and incredible optimism,
determined to live to the fullest as long as he could. His final visit to Noosa saw an explosion of love, laughter and a few tears when Mimi took to the floor at Rococo with great friend Melony Brests. Peter took his final curtain on 6 April at the home of his sister Ann Clarke, who will bring some of his ashes to scatter at the special memorial day among his Sunshine Coast friends. To help with the organisation and bookings, friends attending are asked to contact Eileen Walder (5442 8255 or mobile 0420 939 723 or leave message on Facebook). If bringing photos, videos, wishing to speak or perform please let her know what you will need.

Peter who appeared in numerous theatre productions at Noosa Arts Theatre, including pantomimes and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, was always the ultimate professional, caring about other cast members, helping with make-up and ensuring pre-show nerves were eased with his laughter and encouraging words. Angling to increase the catch By JOLENE OGLE “THEY’RE as tough as old boots,” said Gwen Gilson of Sunland Fish Hatchery, as she sent 20,000 Silver Perch fingerlings swimming into Lake MacDonald, last Wednesday. The fingerlings, donated by Gwen to the Stocking Association, will be an extra boost for the lake’s fish stocks and Stocking Association president Peter Arch hopes the new additions will add to the fishing experience for locals and visitors. “We predominately put in about 20,000 to 30,000 bass every year, and then what’s left over money-wise, we buy yellow belly,” he said. “We’ve actually been getting, last year, some small yel-
low belly being caught.” “It will be interesting to see how many perch we get in the next couple of years, especially with 20,000 going in as that’s how many bass we would put in.” Locals and visitors won’t have to wait long to try for perch, with the fingerlings expected to grow 2mm a day, reaching three-quarters of a kilo within the year. The fingerlings are the first to be released from Gwen’s new hatchery and Gwen couldn’t be more proud of the little guys. “They’re just beautiful,” she said. “Releasing them is my favourite part.” The restocking of local lakes
by stocking associations is integral to the survival of our lakes and dams, Gwen said. “No fish that grows to any substantial size will breed and reproduce itself on the eastern side of the Great Divide,” she said. “Silver perch are native to the Murray Darling system. Otherwise these guys wouldn’t need me. There would be no such thing as a hatchery. “As soon as you got a fish, they would just breed. Because they don’t, that’s why they set up the regional stocking groups to control and help get fingerlings for their dams.” Gwen said she looks forward to releasing more fish throughout the year.
The release of 20,000 fingerlings has been a long time coming for Gwen Gilson. “This is the best part” - Gwen Gilson scoops up the next lot to be released.

India eyes surf crown PEREGIAN Beach Surf Club’s India O’Connor will finally know if her year-long quest to be crowned Jupiters Summer Surf Girl for 2014 has paid off when final judging takes place this Saturday. In a year of milestones for Surf Lifesaving Queensland’s (SLSQ) Jupiters Summer Surf Girl program, six Sunshine Coast residents made the journey to Gold Coast for the final rounds of judging. India joined Brittany Neumann from Rainbow Beach, Michelle Jacobson from Mooloolaba, Nikita McDonald from Kawana Waters, Caitlin Knight from Dicky Beach and Karlee Bryant from Caloundra, along with 17 other entrants from across the state, for a week-long program of judging activities before the winners are named at the gala ball at Jupiters Casino, this Saturday. The Jupiters Summer Surf Girl program is one of SLSQ’s largest and most enduring club-based fundraising programs, this year making its 50th year, as well as the 20th year in partnership with Jupiters Casino. India said being a part of the program was a dream come true. “Being involved with Peregian’s previous Jupiters Summer Surf Girls always made me want to apply when I was old enough,” she said. “Seeing my club, and the wider community, come together to help and support these women once again opened my eyes to what a fantastic place I live in. “When reflecting on what my

forts of the Jupiters Summer Surf Girl entrants and their contribution to the lifesaving movement. “The dedication and commitment of this year’s Jupiters Summer Surf Girls is outstanding and I have no doubt their efforts will serve as an inspiration to all lifesavers across Queensland,” Mr Hill said. “To think that close to $14 million has been raised for surf life

Update to war tribute TEWANTIN’S cenotaph stands as a reminder of the sacrifice of men and women throughout past wars and has long been the place to pay respects to soldiers on Anzac Day. Now, the Tewantin Noosa Lions Club, in partnership with the Tewantin Noosa RSL, is planning an Afghanistan war memorial for Tewantin. Supported by Noosa councillor Frank Pardon, the memorial will be a community project and named the Mates Memorial Walk - Afghanistan War. Lions member Michael Roach said the proposed site for the memorial would have to be one of reflection, peace and tranquility, as well as respect for those who have died or continue to be impacted by the war. “A place where the local community and others can consider the human costs and the determination our forces made to assist the people of Afghanistan,” Mr Roach said. Tewantin Noosa RSL sub-branch president Steve Drake is calling for input from returned soldiers. “We want returned service personnel from this war to be involved, to assist with the project, its design, concept and build so that we can capture their experiences, feelings and emotions for inclusion in this Memorial,” he said. The Tewantin Noosa RSL is asking any returned or serving personnel to contact Mr Drake on 5447 1981 or email armnavair@ westnet.com.au to offer input into this community project. A meeting will be arranged at the proposed site in Tewantin with a briefing session by the end of this month.

STUDENTS are being encouraged to attend the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) Program, which is being rolled out across the Noosa Region for the sixth consecutive year. The RYDA Program is a one-day intensive workshop aimed at all Year 11 and 12 students and raises awareness of road safety through practical and powerful workshops. The RYDA Program has never been more important with the latest figures from the Queensland Police Service Easter road safety campaign seeing four people lose their lives in road accidents and more than 4100 drivers detected speeding with the highest speed detected at 193km/h on the Bruce Highway. The workshops are designed for 16 to 18 year old students between Coolum and Cooroy and focus on teaching students the importance of making the right choice on the road, being aware of stopping distances, and being aware of hazards and risks while driving. This program is unique as it includes an intimate and powerful conversation with a crash survivor and students can hear firsthand how one poor choice can change a life forever. This important program only reached 35 per cent of students last year but Rotary are determined to raise the attendance rate to 90 per cent this year by offering disadvantaged students a subsidised payment option. The program costs $15 per student. Parents and teachers are encouraged to contact Rotary at tahnia@ryda.org.au for more information.

Bimblebox Nature Refuge is a peaceful 8000 hectare sanctuary in central-west Queensland. If this mine goes ahead, it would represent the most significant impact experienced on a nature refuge to date. letters Enemies made I KNOW this letter will make enemies but I want to respond to the article (Noosa Today, 8 May) about council hiring a consultant about recycling. I hate consultants. The number of times Morgan Stanley hired the “best and brightest” to tell us what we needed instead of just asking the employees was ridiculous, not to mention infuriating and costly. Waste avoidance: just google what other towns in Australia and overseas do. Let’s start by banning plastic bags in Noosa. We can cut garden/food waste, as it makes up 50 per cent of landfill. I’m sure a quick calculation of the cost of expanding the landfill against free garden waste disposal would be easy. Look at the new green incinerators to burn garden waste and turn it into electricity. Balance the CO2 emissions of the two (hint - incinerator wins). To improve recycling, we can start by having recycling bins next to every public waste bin. Every restaurant/cafe should have a recycling bin either back of the house or in front. Make it part of obtaining a food licence. Commercial waste options: that is like many things ... put it out to tender. Garbage is a cost to the community and if it is simply explained that if everyone tries to make an effort to recycle and council makes it an easy process, then rates won’t need to go up as much. The community can grasp that. Ptor Giestland, Sunshine Beach.
Tipping point AS AN out-of-towner it was interesting to read about the issues you are having with your landfill (Noosa Today, 8 May). The first obvious solution is to not send garden and food waste to landfill
Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville 4566 or email: editor@localnewsnetwork.com.au
when it’s easily compostable. The second solution would be to switch to a weekly recycling/compost collection and fortnightly landfill waste collection (the same system used where I’m from - Bristol, UK ). By my calculations, based on your article, this should cut landfill by up 70 per cent by putting the collection onus onto recycling rather than landfill and re-thinking what you consider to be landfill. I also have to express my surprise that the council has seemingly hired a consultant to raise the issues mentioned and is now looking for another consultant for solutions to these issues. As I have suggested some very workable solutions, I look forward to hearing from the council regarding my very competitive consultancy fees. Dominic Synnock, Bristol, UK.
Cost of de-amalgamation WHEN will Noosa Council detail the cost of de-amalgamation? It seems the mayor does not want to show the extent of its debt with QTC but surely the community is entitled to know the real cost of independence. There’s a policy to cut internal expenditure but now community projects like the redevelopment of the old mill site at Cooroy have been abandoned. Perhaps a pro-active council encouraging growth would be preferable. John Lobb, Peregian Springs.
surface) temperature. They are known as HadCRUT4, NASA GISS and NCDC MLOST. In all three instrumental records, the warmest year is 2010, followed by 2005. NASA GISS has 2007 third, whereas the other two have 1998, the last severe El Nino year. The average warming trend from the instrumental records for the period 1998-2012 is 0.05 degrees C per decade. Unfortunately, while surface temperatures are the most well-known indicators, they are not the best. Nearly all (93 per cent) of the additional energy causing global warming is absorbed by the oceans, and that gives us the best measure. In 2013, the oceans accumulated about 25 million million gigajoules of extra energy - that’s equivalent to about 12 Hiroshima-type atomic bomb explosions every second. Doesn’t look like stalled warming to me. Graham Coghill, Marcus Beach.
We should be so lucky WE are the lucky country. No military junta, dictatorship, separatists, oligarchy or other unelected entities to decide our future. Instead, we have a superior sounding Commission of Audit, a collaboration of well-paid businessmen and one female ex-politician to decide the policies for our future. Poor fellow, my country. Margaret Wilkie. Peregian Beach.
Warming up
Lack of logic
CAN we please put to rest the myth that “our earth has not warmed for more than 16 years” as recycled by Geoff Cass (Noosa Today, 8 May)? Let’s get the facts straight. The claim is false. There are three main instrumental records of global surface (and I stress
I AM encouraged by the amount of space your paper is currently devoting to the debate on climate change. It is an issue both sides find important and one that has the potential to affect our lives in fundamental ways, so bravo, your alertness is profound. What I am less encouraged by is the
logic used in some of the arguments. Logic has been around since Aristotle and most likely before. It describes the use of building an argument such that one statement does not contradict its predecessor and allows the statement to grow and add insight. There are two types of logic. One is deductive: All trees have trunks. A eucalypt is a tree. Therefore, deductive reasoning tells you that the eucalypt has a trunk. Greenhouse gas emissions have an effect, therefore mankind is having an influence. One is inductive: Robert is a teacher. All teachers are nice. Therefore, inductive reasoning tells you Robert should be nice. Climate has always changed, therefore mankind has no influence in the current change. While the conclusion of a deductive argument is supposed to be certain, the truth of an inductive argument is supposed to be probable, based upon the evidence given. My stance on climate change is obvious to me because it’s highly complex. Scientists are finding it hard to model such a complex system to provide accurate predictions. Yes, climate change has been happening since we understood the concept, but NO we cannot rule out mankind’s influence. The deductive conclusion is: Climate is changing; mankind could be having an effect on this; it may or may not be a major effect; we cannot wait to know how much of an effect this is because our tardiness could be fatal; we should therefore, as a matter of urgency, modify our behavior so we can hold our heads up high to our grandchildren. Let me know if I’m wrong. Chris Hindmarsh, Tinbeerwah.
NAPLAN experience HOW can anyone be disappointed that students are enjoying a learning experience and getting more confident about the NAPLAN tests (Noosa To-
day, 8 May), referring to School News editorial (Noosa Today, 1 May). Why do we need to coach students? So that parents can help their children to achieve their potential in life. The head of the national testing body ACARA, Robert Randall likened the stress of NAPLAN tests to a sports carnival in an article in the Herald Sun on 2 May. He advised mums and dads to be working with young people so that they are learning how to manage the stress and to put these assessments in context. This is an important part of the work I have done as a consultant with parents and students for many years. A school’s performance in NAPLAN is made up of the performance of the individual students, so if literacy and numeracy skills are improved through tutoring sessions, that is obviously good for those students and their schools. However, also important is that students I work with become more interested in their learning at school which makes their regular class time more productive. John Clarke, Doonan.
Increasing non-increase CASE Smit wrote “global temperature has not risen for 17 years”. Graham Goghill refutes that statement, writing “there is no evidence to support this claim”. The IPCC Climate Change 2013 Report (fifth assessment) includes a summary for policy makers. The summary contains this statement: “The long-term climate model simulations show a trend (increasing) in global-mean surface temperature from 1951 to 2012 that agrees with the observed trend . There are, however, differences between simulated and observed trends (meaning no increase) over periods as short as 10 to 15 years (e.g., 1998 to 2012).” Woody Dass.
Books do some good THOUSANDS of books were sold and thousands of dollars raised for local charities at the annual Rotary Club of Noosa Heads Daybreak Bookfest. Held in the first weekend of May, the annual event raises funds to support local charities with the Hear and Say Centre, Guide Dogs QLD and Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club’s access program, all benefiting this year. Rotary president Ian McDonald said the event couldn’t have been a bigger success. “We are very proud to share that the funds raised at this year’s Bookfest will now be used to change the lives of people in our community,” Mr McDonald said. “We want to share a big ‘thanks’ to all our volunteer helpers, to our sponsors, and to all who came along,
enjoyed the event and bought the books. “The mountain of books on sale over three days once again enabled people in our Noosa region, both young and old, to stock up with piles of books at bargain prices. “It is Rotary’s pleasure to be able to supply this opportunity to the community in support of local charities, and we thank you for supporting our causes with your purchases.” If you went in the draw to win the $1,000 cash bonus in the raffle, the winning ticket is number 1945. Baker’s buns rise to the occasion EVERYONE was seeing pink when Bakers Delight Noosa Junction helped raise more than $1000 for the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) through the sale of bright pink buns.
Cr Joe Jurisevic presenting C&K Childcare Centre Tewantin with their achievement award.
Local musician and breast cancer survivor Tracey Combes was on hand to help with the event in which the full proceeds from all buns sold went straight to the BCNA to help provide support services to women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Child centre is wasting away
For Tracey, who has recently received training to help women through their breast cancer journey, the event was a great way to meet other women who are suffering or have survived the disease. “It was very humbling to receive so much support from the Noosa community,” she said. “I feel blessed to be able to help other women through this often terrible time.” For more information on BCNA’s support services, visit www.bcna.org.au.

IT was a proud day for the children and staff at C&K Childcare Centre, Tewantin, when councillor Joe Jurisevic presented the centre with a Certificate of Achievement for waste reduction. The accolade is part of the Shire of Noosa’s STARS program that teaches pre-school and primary school children the importance of reducing waste and the best methods for recycling various materials. The program also involves teaching children how to create compost and look after a worm farm, as well as other ways to reduce landfill. In the year since C&K Childcare introduced the

STARS program, staff have reduced their waste volumes going to landfill by 47 per cent, increased their recycling by 34 per cent and are diverting 6 per cent of their waste to compost. Cr Jurisevic praised the childcare centre’s efforts, congratulating the children and staff at Tewantin C&K on a fantastic waste reduction result. “The challenge ahead is for parents and the rest of our community to match the efforts of the kids,” he said. “We can all do this in our own homes, schools and businesses to reduce waste and improve recycling every day.”

business up close Switch on to Gone Batty THERE’S no need to drive to Maroochydore for battery needs with the recent expansion of Gone Batty, Noosaville, for all battery needs. Although Gone Batty opened its doors this month, it is the expansion of a locally owned solar business in the growing niche of the self-sufficiency wave. The proud owner of Gone Batty Battery Warehouse, Marsol Industries Solar Energy Products, leased its first warehouse in Noosaville in 2011, originally as a distributor for residential solar installers with its primary sales being generated online. Very quickly the Marsol team identified a growing need for good quality 12V solar panels, and resources for people on how to set up small selfsufficient solar systems. Marsol has developed its Hurricane Solar range and extensive product line to service both fixed and mobile solar applications such as caravans, motorhomes, RVs and 4WD allowing
more touring independence, as well as supplying small fixed systems for sheds, workshops and cabins where power is not easy to access. The decision to go into batteries is

CHILDREN in need have a reason to smile thanks to local businesses that supported the annual Smile for a Child John Piercy Memorial golf day at Tewantin Noosa Golf Club. Held in September, over $19,000 was raised at the golf day, which is a joint initiative of six local clubs; Sunshine Beach Surf Club, Noosa Heads Surf
Club, Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club, Tewantin Noosa RSL, Tewantin Noosa Golf Club and Cooroy RSL. In partnership with Clubs QLD and Smile for a Child, the local clubs were proud to present cheques to local charities, last month. The recipients were the Star-
tlight Foundation, Sunny Kids and Frankie-Lee Shaw, who all received cheques for $5000, plus a $4000 donation to the Noosa Navy Cadets. The golf day was a great success for local charities and is part of the $244,000 that has been raised by Smile for a Child since being established in 2007.

The victory of the Vikings THE era known as the Viking Age lasted for over 300 years and is commonly portrayed by horned helmets and animal-fur clothing, but history tells a more complex story of a fascinating culture, based upon craftsmanship and trade. The exhibition was filmed live in London with exhibition curator Gareth Williams and leading world experts taking cinema audiences through the exhibition, getting up close to objects and exploring the global contacts, ships and swords, burials and beliefs of the Viking Age as well as examining the Vikings’ enduring language and legacy. With demonstrations, stunning close-up photography of the Viking objects and a torch-lit burial staged in the grounds of the museum, Vikings from the British Museum will be a reminder of how the Vikings have shaped our modern lives. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students. For more information visit our website www.noosacinemas.com.au or phone the box office on 07 5447 5130.

Created by final year public relations students from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) and hosted by Noosa and District Landcare, the event aims to be a fun way to create awareness of local conservation issues. USC student Jen Cochrane said she was thankful for the number of sponsors supporting the event and hoped people would get involved.
“We’re really promoting people to get creative and wear their own native accessories on the night,” she said. Ms Baker said the event was mostly aimed at young adults, but everyone was welcome to attend. “The main goal of the evening is for it to be memorable and fun, thereby creating awareness among the community, particularly among 20-30 year olds,” she said. Manager of Noosa and District Landcare Phil Moran said a number of sponsors were on board. “The students have done a really fantastic job gaining sponsorship from lo-

What is something about yourself that not many people know? Micheal: I did a stand-up comedy act about two years ago. I got one laugh, so I’m ready to do another. Sasha: I’m scared of someone or something touching my feet when I sleep. What was the first/best concert you attended? Micheal: Tea Party at the Palais Theatre. Sasha: Five - I won tickets (lucky they were free). If you could witness any event - past, present or future - what would it be? Micheal: Just before Joan of Arc was captured. I would tell her to run faster so Sasha could invite her over for dinner. What was your favourite book as a child? Micheal: Dr Seuss (really easy reading). Sasha: Alice in Wonderland.
cal organisations such as The Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort and Spa Noosa, Noosa Biosphere Ltd, Noosa and Integrated Catchment Association, Tourism Noosa and others,” he said. Katrina Brase from Katz Body Art will be offering temporary tattoos on the night for only $5, with close to half of the money raised going to Noosa and District Landcare. “They are all designed to reflect the native flora,” she said. Tickets are $25 and are available at www.noosalandcare.org What would you last meal on Earth be? Micheal: Anything cooked by my mum. Sasha: A concoction of bread, chocolate and ice-cream. If you could live through one particular era, what would it be? Micheal: I’m happy here at the moment. Sasha: This is a tough one ... If you could be someone else for a week, who would it be? Micheal: Jake Wall ... (look him up, wink wink). Sasha: Anyone who has no job, a nanny, a cleaner, a chef and personal shopper - fun, right? Who would be your top five dinner party guests, and why? Micheal: Donna Hay (entree), Jamie Oliver (main), Adriano Zumbo (dessert), Dan Murphy (wine) and Jennifer Hawkins. What was your most embarrassing moment? Micheal: I don’t get embarrassed! Sasha: Not sure, but I’m positive there’s a lot.

Paul A / Noosaville Dear Melanie, Thankyou for your recent work in the sale of two properties in Noosaville on our behalf. This was all occurred whilst we were overseas and out of contact most of the time; we didn’t expect the properties to sell whilst we were away as we were only there three weeks! The speed and efficiency of the sales within the first weeks of our trip came as a great surprise to us but we felt confident that you had researched the market well and submitted good offers to us, which we were happy to accept. In conclusion we would like to thankyou once again and will certainly recommend you to others seeking a quick and efficient sale of their property. Scott & Sandra K. / Coolum Beach Hi Melanie and the R&W Team, I would like to voice my appreciation of the hard work and dedication exhibited by Melanie in the recent sale of our home. As an active participant in the real estate market we understand just how important the difference a good agent can make. Our sales goal was not to follow the market, but to lead it. With Melanie’s pro-active strategies and flawless follow-thru we achieved our aspirations. Through it all, Melanie’s professional yet very personable manner made the process enjoyable.

Building business... and the NRL MASTER Builders is giving building industry participants the opportunity to meet The Outdoor Furniture Specialists founder Craig Davison, the man behind plans to introduce a new NRL team.
REIQ chairman Rob Honeycombe said the simplified laws would deliver important benefits for both real estate professionals and consumers.
Master Builders Sunshine Coast regional manager Michael Hopkins said that , while Craig’s NRL anecdotes would interest many, it was his business experience that would greatly benefit all attendees and assist them in remaining at the forefront of the industry.
As well as being the founder and managing director of the successful retail chain, Craig is the chairman of the Brisbane Bombers and a former chairman of the Broncos Thoroughbreds. He and the Brisbane Bombers were working tirelessly to introduce a new team to the NRL competition and with such a strong supporter base across the Sunshine Coast, it was an exciting time for the region. Mr Hopkins said the connection Craig and his company had with the Sunshine Coast Falcons was also strong, especially with the juniors. “The level of support is great to see and is an integral part of our community,” Mr Hopkins said. “I really encourage all to come along to hear about the
THE Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) has welcomed landmark property and real estate reforms passed by the Queensland Parliament. The long awaited split of the Property Agents and Motor Dealers Act has resulted in the creation of industry specific legislation, including the Property Occupations Act.
He will speak at an Industry Update event on Wednesday, 21 May.
Craig established The Outdoor Furniture Specialists 24 years ago, starting out with one shop in Brisbane. He now boasts 45 stores right across Australia, as well as successful property developments throughout the state.
Property law reforms get warm welcome
He said the Property Occupations Act and other associated legislation passed today would cut red tape and make it easier to buy and sell real estate throughout Queensland. Craig Davison will speak at a Masters Builders event next week. latest industry news and Craig’s bold plans for the future of NRL in Queensland.
“The REIQ has been fighting for industry-specific legislation for many years on behalf of our members and for the betterment of the entire profession in Queensland,” he said.
“Not only is this event a must-attend for anyone who works in building and construction, it’s an exciting time for the whole region.
“Previously, the real estate sector has long been legislatively bundled in with a variety of other occupations and the REIQ always felt that our profession deserved its own specific legislation.

Nicole holds keys to concert of note
Twang - new to the Rockabilly scene.
Musical Twang at RSL LOCAL band Twang has burst on to the rockabilly scene with exuberance, excitement and ability that is literally sweeping people off their feet. Though relatively new to the scene, Twang has a rich rockabilly pedigree in the line-up. Tim Collett on slap bass and vocals is the founding and ongoing member of iconic Australian rockabilly act, The Convertibles. Tim’s long association with the
rockabilly genre has forged a rhythmic, percussive, solid, titillating slap bass style and has been a mentor to many upcoming enthusiasts. Dean Kendal on drums and vocals was also a founding member of another iconic Queensland rockabilly act, The Shakin’ Quavers, as well as performing a long stint with The Convertibles. On vocals and acoustics is multi-award winning country music performer, Maree Gwynne, who at one time in
her early career shared honours with the likes of Keith Urban. Maree’s big voice and upbeat boppy, sassy on-stage persona channels memories of rockabilly queens like Wanda Jackson and Janice Martin. Last but not least, on lead guitar and vocals is Dan Fargo, an in-demand performer who’s vocal and picking skills are much acclaimed. His past stints with roots, blues, rock and country acts
have helped Dan reinforce and develop his own unique rockabilly guitar style. Twang has the ability to impress the long-time rockabilly enthusiast or infect someone just experiencing the music form for the first time. You can catch Twang at Tewantin Noosa RSL for free, this Saturday night from 8pm. Phone 5447 1766 for dinner and courtesy bus reservations.

THE night we were watching Lila Downs in the square at Patzcuaro, Corky emailed me detailed instructions on how to find the Casa de Surf. “Exit the tollway and drive about 20 miles south on the 200. When you come to the village of Los Llanos, follow the road around to the right and take the dirt road through town and down a hill and head for the coast. When the road veers left take the dirt track right where there’s a sign saying Casa Pacifica or something. Then take the second left (don’t take the first or you’ll end up bogged in the salt pan) all the way to the beach and turn left. We’re the first house on the right with the sign on the gate that says Dogs Bite. (They don’t.)” If you blink you’ll miss Los Llanos and I apparently did, but I turned around and circled back before too much damage was done and took the rough little road. As towns go, Los Llanos has all the appeal and architectural splendour of, say, Kowanyama. Drunks hang outside the three supermarkets waiting to tax gringos who might emerge squinting into the sun with a six-pack or two. There is a thick coating of dust over everything and faces peer out of shabby windows as you drive by. The only hint that there might be surf nearby is that the signs pointing the way to La Saladita are all old surfboards. Corky Carroll has called this little stretch of coast home for a dozen years now. The name won’t mean a lot to many of you, but when I was growing up Corky was Mr California Surf. He was everywhere - beer billboards and Jantzen commercials, all over the magazines, in all the surf movies and even had his own TV show. He was five-times US champion, won the Surfer Poll and the Yanks claimed him best surfer in the world for a while. (We never bought into this, knowing Nat Young would smash him.) I first met him about 1980, when
Corky and Raquel at the Casa de Surf. he was advertising manager of Surfer Magazine and I was a contributing editor, then in later years I’d often run into him at trade shows. We were never much more than nodding acquaintances, but I always found him a lively character, full of fun, so when a mutual friend suggested we should visit his surf camp, I jumped at the chance. The Casa de Surf is a relatively modest two-storey bungalow on the driftwood-strewn beach of La Saladita, about 300 metres north of one of the most celebrated left hand point breaks in Mexico. When we arrived late morning, Corky suggested I get out there immediately, since the onshore wind was on the way up. I selected a likely-looking single fin Hobie from the rack, waxed up and surfed for an hour with just two or three others. The breeze was knocking the take-off section about a bit, but once you negotiated that, the long inside wall cleaned up as it bent into the bay and the wave faces were smooth and beautiful. In fact, over a week of diminishing swell, I found that some of the best sessions were after the wind got up, when all the good old boys
would disappear to their hammocks and beers, and you could pick off clean inside runners at will. Corky built his Casa about a dozen years ago, and since then much bigger adobe palaces have sprung up to either side along the strip, while the Casa has taken a beating from earthquakes and hurricanes, so that the roof leaks and the pool has a few malfunctions. But it still has plenty of charm, much of it issuing from the gregarious couple who run it. Eight years ago Corky met Raquel, a beautiful photographer from Mexico City whose family name adorns one of the country’s better tequilas. They were married and now Raquel takes surf photos in the mornings and prepares a sumptuous dinner for the guests each afternoon. At precisely 6.15pm, Corky’s old buddy Tim Dorsey arrives with his pack of hounds, chewing ferociously on an unlit stogie. He’ll pour himself a red wine (or his other favourite, cold beer poured over half a glass of salted peanuts) and sit down to shoot the breeze and watch the sun go down, before Raquel calls him into the house to assume his role as salad monitor.

Tim’s now well into his 70s, but he was chief lifeguard at Seal Beach when Corky was growing up, and Corky never forgets old mates and mentors. Now Tim lives a few houses up the beach and takes every evening meal with the Carrolls. In fact the whole of Saladita is a parade of faces from Corky’s storied past, along with crazy characters like Backwards Bob, who stands on his board backwards, but plays a mean guitar in the cantina up the road. The swell got smaller and smaller and on the last day but one I was forced to paddle a SUP in the bay instead of riding the point. But then a storm grew on the horizon as we drank our sunset Corkaritas, we got smashed all night by one of the most ferocious electrical storms I’ve experienced, power went down all over Saladita, a 6.4 earthquake down near Acapulco gave us a good old rumble, and we woke in the morning to an eerie darkness and solid lines on the point. We surfed clean overhead waves all morning under a leaden sky, with lightning bolts dancing on the surrounding mountains. And then we were gone.
An inside runner at La Saladita.

Giving acupuncture a jab IT IS with great pleasure that Circle Wellness Clinic welcomes our newest team member, acupuncturist Jo Newport. Jo has 20 years’ experience with acupuncture and natural therapies. Her comprehensive and healing acupuncture treatments also include massage, Moxa and Bowen therapy techniques. What is acupuncture? ACUPUNCTURE is the stimulation of specific acupoints along the skin of the body involving various methods such as the application of heat, pressure, or penetration of very fine needles. According to traditional Chinese medicine, stimulating specific acupuncture points corrects imbalances in the flow of Qi through channels and meridians. The origins of acupuncture in China can be traced back at least 2000 years, making it one of the oldest and most long-standing health care systems in the world. Today, acupuncture is an effective, natural and increasingly popular form of health care. Arthritis and acupuncture NOW that the weather is cooling down, many people are feeling the ef-
fects of their arthritis. Pain is the primary complaint of arthritis sufferers, and acupuncture is a very effective form of pain control. It relieves pain in three ways. First, it causes the body to produce chemicals called endorphins, which inhibit the perception of pain. Endorphins are similar to morphine, which is given in Western medicine. The big difference is that endorphins are produced naturally by the patient’s own body. Hence, there are no sideeffects. Secondly, acupuncture works through the nervous system by blocking the transmission of pain signals to the brain. Thirdly, it deactivates trigger points. Trigger points are tender and extremely reactive areas that develop in muscles and other tissues of the body. They are often responsible for chronic pain and are frequently found around arthritic joints. Each person is unique. Most patients should experience some symptomatic relief after one or two treatments. A normal “ course” is generally six to 10 treatments, and then the case is re-evaluated. For cases in which
joint mobility is restricted or inflammation reoccurs, periodic maintenance treatments are often recommended. About Jo Newport JO recently moved to the Sunshine Coast to enjoy the relaxed lifestyle and be closer to family. After graduating
from the Australian College of Natural Medicine in 1993, she joined a busy clinic in Gladstone working alongside naturopaths, kinesiologists, massage therapists and other health professionals, where she gained experience treating a wide range of ailments including musculo-skeletal, gynaecological,
digestive and stress disorders. If you are interested in a more balanced and healthier life, call Circle to book a session with Jo on 5471 2201. It’s $75 for hour sessions, or $65 for concession card holders. Health rebates are available.

When food is not a friend states including auto-immune disorders, cancer and inflammatory diseases like arthritis. With the gut leaking, undigested protein molecules from our food are transferring into the bloodstream where the immune system is doing a really great job and identifying these as foreign. The resulting inflammatory response then occurs each and every time that same food is eaten - the immune system is ready and waiting, armed with T-helper and CD4 immune cells which is a cell-mediated response put in place to ‘protect’ your body from foreign invading particles. And so it is that intolerance is created. The good news is that many food intolerances can be treated and in some cases completely cleared from your system with the improvement of liver function and the repair of the gastro-intestinal tract. You don’t necessarily have to say goodbye to your favourite dish forever! By identifying exactly which foods you have intolerance to, you can remove these from your diet, set about the repair and recovery process, support the immune system, and when the immune complexes are cleared can set about reintroducing the foods that were once making you feel ordinary.
When your body is intolerant of a specific food or food group your immune system produces IgG antibodies…

TIRED, sore, overweight, anxious? You could be suffering from food intolerances. We have all heard about the severe reactions that can occur within an hour of ingesting a food to which your body is allergic: hives; wheezing; anxiety; swelling and in the worst cases, anaphylaxis which is life-threatening. But there’s another reaction which is far more widespread, yet seems to fly under the radar as its effects are more subtle and come on over a 12-48 hour period: food intolerance reactions. When your body is intolerant of a specific food or food group your immune system produces IgG antibodies, which over time build up in your system and can play havoc with your health. These immune complexes remain in your body and each time you are exposed to that food on a cellular level, inflammation, cell damage and the release of chemicals occur. This damages your tissues and results in symptoms such as depression, skin rashes, weight gain, gastro-intestinal disturbances, loose bowel motions, insomnia, fatigue and low energy levels. Many clients ask, why are we all of a sudden so allergic and intolerant to foods that we historically ate for centuries? Or, I’ve eaten cheese my whole life, why would I start reacting now? One answer is found in the increased food processing and use of pesticides, additives and chemicals in our food manufacturing. This chemical cocktail and high intake of ‘nutrition-less’ refined foods is damaging the lining of our stomach and leads to a syndrome known as Leaky Gut which has been linked to many different disease

Did you know that 90 per cent of serotonin, your ‘happy hormone’ is produced in your gut? Recent scientific research has linked gut imbalance to mood problems, so maintaining a healthy digestive tract is paramount to a healthy mind. There is a little-known genetically inherited condition called Pyroluria, very easily identified. The body produces an excess of kryptopyrroles which bind to zinc and vitamin B6 and excrete them. A profound deficiency results and most of the above symptoms appear. Stress from emotions, illness or even pain can drain the adrenals, subsequently compromising the function of the pituitary (the master gland). Your thyroid and ovaries then may slow down. Nutri-

MOOD swings, anxiety, depression, brain fog, cravings, low motivation, fatigue, weight issues - sounding all too familiar? Naturopath Yolanda Falivene finds that symptoms rarely occur in isolation and it can become very confusing for people to know where to start treating themselves. Many end up spending a fortune on various supplements, treating only part of the problem and not always the cause. Hormones have a lot to answer for, but they are not always the primary issue as so many other factors can influence their delicate balance. Hormone problems can often be the end result of a cascade caused by nutritional deficiencies, digestive problems, stress or toxicity just to name a few.

Kids get cracking early By JODIE BUSHBY Under 7 White WHITES families this weekend learnt a valuable lesson in committing to their kids’ sport by a crack of dawn start to get their kids to Stanley River by 8.30am. All families involved need to be acknowledged for this mammoth effort. The boys played two great games of footy against very capable opposition. All the boys seem to develop new levels of ability each week. Lucas Byers and Zahn Bruggy, with some encouragement, really got in and had a go and if the club has an award for falcon of the year Zahn Bruggy has to be on the leader board after the one he took from the kick off! The Drinnan Show was exciting as ever to watch, at one stage Bailey Drinnan was jumping out of his skin like a kangaroo to make tackles. Lachlan Ward, Joe Tolano, Bailey Hozier, Lincoln Knight, Sam Proctor and Rhy North all dazzled throughout the matches, showing us all some fabulous footy. Player of the Match was Lincoln Knight.
Under 8 THE team travelled down to Caloundra for two games against the Caloundra Sharks. The mighty Pirates were very impressive and even the Caloundra Coach said that that it was a very good team. Brilliant games from Big Joe Dwyer, Benny Graf, Josh Palmer, Dylan Alchin and Roy Crozier. A standout performance from Player of the Match Jed Danton who bagged several tries and made some very good tackles. Lachlan Neville and Lochlan Johnson both having some very hard runs straight up the middle. Taj Egea also had a very solid game scoring a great try as well. The little secret weapon Hamish Cook also scored a great try. Much improved games from Cohyn North, Cody Reid and Liam Dunkinson. All round a very good two games from the boys.
Under 9 Blue IN WET and slippery conditions U9 Blue took on a strong Caloundra Sharks team. The team had to put lots of effort into defence and never gave up trying to tackle and chase down the runner. They had some great attacking play with the players looking to offload the ball to those backing up. Awesome tries to Liam, Spencer, Joel and Nathaniel. Player of the Match went to Ryan for his allround great game in both attack and defence.
Under 9 White THE boys travelled to Caloundra. Maybe it was the cold weather or the early start, but the boys started slowly and let Caloundra score a couple of quick tries. After a team talk from coach Isaac, the boys awoke and got their game together. Their defence was outstanding. There was some great runs from the big boys up front Riley, Charlie, Jackson and Kaleb, and with great supporting attack from the backs, Nic passed a wide ball out to Jed who ran in the Whites’ first try. The momentum definitely swung towards the Pirates and the boys finished the game full of running and attacking football. It was another great team effort. The team song was sung very loud and proud.
Congratulations to Player of the Match, Ryan, with lots of runs and great cover tackles.
Man of the Match Willem Lindsay, the hit up king once again PJ Hill and the tackle king Dylan Cross.
Under 10 White THE boys travelled to Caloundra this weekend to play Caloundra Black. Well done to Larz and Jesi who played their first full game of Rugby League and got in and tried hard. Jarred and Cooper were in a lot of tackles along with Jackson who defended well. Jackson was awarded Player of the Match.
Under 10 Blue THE boys really enjoyed leaving the North Division and heading south to Caloundra. Ethan, Ben W, Luke and Zak tackled really well and were an integral part of the Blue team moving the ball forward allowing many tries to be scored. Zak was awarded Player of the Match.
Under 10 Yellow UNDER 10 Yellow had a great game at Caloundra. Everyone defended well and worked well as a team. In the attack Sam, Zayne, Ethan, Harry and Cade scored plenty of tries. Player of the Match went to Cooper for his great kicking game which set up many tries. Everyone worked hard for a great result.
Under 11 Gold UNDER 11 Gold travelled south to play the big boys from Bribie. The Noosa boys lacked line speed in the first 10 minutes and Bribie made the most of it scoring two quick tries. Noosa fought back to go to half time break 18-6 down. After the break and a fire up from the coach the boys lifted. The boys laid on some great tries to finish the game as an 18 all draw. Man of the Match went to Francis for his barnstorming runs and hungry dog award went to Jackson for his outstanding defence.
Under 12A IT WAS a top of the table clash and the winner would be gifted top spot on the ladder. The Noosa boys started the game on fire as they dominated field position and controlled the ball beautifully resulting in a nice try to Jake Zanevra who dived over from dummy half. The renowned defence was on song as the team kept getting up in the opponents’ faces and putting them on their backs. Bribie was struggling to get out of its own 20 and the Under 12A’s defence forced errors and through some good passing crossed again thanks to Floyd Nowill. Some uncharacteristic mistakes saw them defending the line late in the first half and Bribie managed to cross the white line in the last minute before the break. Half time 10-4. The second half was a arm wrestle in which the momentum changed quite often, but thanks to some great solid runs when needed by Willem Lindsey the team seemed to always be on top. Back-up was provided by PJ Hill who, whenever he had the ball in his hand, threatened to break Bribie’s defence. While we kept getting the team through the line, the points never came. It took a nice back line play for Jordie Murison to cross, Dylan Cross converted which proved to be the killer blow.
Under 12B THE boys began the day at home against Kawana Grey full of confidence due to the team finally beginning to click together. A tight first half could have had either team leading at the break, however Kawana scored a run away try before half time to lead 10-4 at the change of ends. From the moment the second half began the Noosa boys were not going to let this one slip through their fingers. Noosa hardly let Kawana touch the ball in the second half and romped in five more trys to win 2810. The whole team deserve a pat on the back for this performance, but special mention goes to Angus Meyndershagen and Beau Henderson.
Under 13A THE Dragons may have signed Benji but the Pirates have got the best deal this week with Sean Rodger joining the 13As from Coolum 13Bs. He made an immediate impact with a try, a couple of try assists and excellent defence. With another quality back rower on his list, Coach Wessling changed his whole front row with Lachlan Tindall, Oliver Spring and midget Prop Steen Rutledge moving forward. Regular back rowers Will Barrett and Clay Cussen and new recruit Sean made up the starting pack. The boys totally dominated the Caloundra pack in all areas of the game and set a great foundation for the big boys coming off the bench to build on, and build they did! Marcus Hooper, Jake Smith, Clyde Whitford and the year’s big improver Travis Garahy keeping the roll going. Tommy Langton at halfback behind a dominant pack looked right at home with the forwards running their plays off him, and they can only get better. Out in the backs, Chaance Wells is starting to chime into the backline more, Kurt Gadd and Lachlan Turner provided some great defence, and Zane Keen made a stack of metres with some great running. After such a dissapointing effort last week it was great to see the boys start to live up to the potential in this team. Try of the week to Zane Keen with a combination of speed, footwork and a chip kick producing a sensational individual try. Hit of the week to Clyde with a real bonecruncher. Man of the Match honours were shared between Ollie Spring and Steen Rutledge. Some things never change. Frontrowers win games. Big thankyou to young “Crossy” who backed up from the 12s to help out.
Under 13B THIS week the team played away at Stanley Rivers but lost by five trys. However Corey Mackenzie played his heart out and Luke Rogers did the little things that got him Man of the Match.
Under 14B THE boys got a Friday night game and made the most of it with an unbelievable team effort! Maroochy-
dore was Grand Finalists in 2013 but the Under 14Bs came ready to play. Noosa has been improving every week, and have been training very well. The first half was dominated by the boys with tries to Jake Dominiak and Zane Embelton. The Noosa attack and defence was first class and ’Dingo’ worked a treat. Austin Coleman pulled off the play of the season with an amazing tackle that saved a certain run away try to the Swans. The following tackle was another try saver from Jack Giles Maroochydore scored right on half time to make it 8-4. Maroochydore dominated the second half and the boys had to defend their try line for most of it. With 10 minutes to go, Noosa was behind 10-8 but its determination was noticeable to the great home crowd that braved the soggy conditions. The tide turned and the brave forwards got the team into field position for Zane to crash over to score. Jake was also unlucky with a try pulled up right on full time to leave the final score Noosa 14 Swans 10 for the boys first win of 2014. Will Irvine was named Man of the Match and Alex Fredericks received the Encouragement Award. Both boys had giant games in the middle.
Teams keep up the pace By JOE JURISEVIC Noosa Dolphins Junior Rugby Union Round 3 U6 Noosa Fins 45 drew U6 Noosa Reds 45 THE game was fast paced in its entirety with both teams doing themselves proud. A generous and appreciative crowd lapped up the boys’ skills on show on Saturday. Fins: Tries abounded, with firsts for the season from Jackson and Myles. There was also a try from Gus and two a piece from George, Brendan and Rory. Phoenix was on the ball with sheer determination while Julian and Noah were incredible in fighting support of the terrifying, hot stepping trio of George, Gus and Rory against some equally fast and furious Reds. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match: Rory McIntyre Reds: The younger members of both Noosa teams lead from the front with defence piercing darts from Jaxon, Noah and Manu. Conor, Jax and Darcy set a solid platform up front while Charlie, Harry and Zac capitalised on quality front foot ball with some ripper tries. Angus and Stirling again impressed with their leadership and positional awareness. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match: Charlie Harmer

UNDER 15 travelled to Caloundra for Friday night’s game. It was a tight first half and both teams were locked up at six a piece. Many errors and a lot of penalties invited Caloundra up in Noosa’s half. To the credit of the Noosa side it produced its best defensive effort ever and kept Caloundra scoreless while managing to cross for a six pointer itself and close the game out for a 12-6 victory.
REDS’ big men again tackled well with Will punching up going to ground and placing the ball for his speedy team mates to collect and go. It was a tight game for the evenly matched Noosa teams, the local derby had the crowd going wild. Remi was in everything going forward with the ball. Finnbar really pushed himself to get to players. Kaleb picked up some fringe ball and got away with fast runs forward and passed well. Byron got among it ripping the ball. A great fend to go to ground close to the line where Oscar picked up and scored. Oscar scored four with two close to the length of the field. James showed the goods with determined tackling and saved a sure try late in the game. Mack got us off the mark with a weaving try, then again late in the first. Congratulations to courageous Joch, Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match, who played even though being under the weather. Another Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match went to Louie Griffen.
Under 16 THE Under 16 boys came up against Caloundra in a Friday night home game. It ended up being a great team effort, and it was awesome to see these boys come together like they did. Caloundra had the team stitched up on the scoreboard in the first half, with sloppy ball handling from the Noosa boys leaving a bit to be desired. Holes in the defence, and players not knowing what was expected of them in their positions also showed. But, they came out in the second half full of enthusiasm. It’s usual to see these boys lose their heads and start playing desperate footy when the points are stacked against them, but to Noosa’s credit they won the second half, and really gelled together. If these guys keep putting in the effort as a team the way they did, who knows how they could finish up their Junior playing days. ‘Slippery’ (Nelson Hands) played a good game, running great lines and scoring three solid tries. ‘Nugget’ (Ethan Pye), playing in the back line, scored himself a tidy try in the right hand corner, tightening the score line-up. The ‘old men’ of the team Zac McBurnie, Bayden Bushby, Jake Bullen and Darcey Crawford-Rickards showed that they’ve still got it after all these years.
U8 USC 30 d Fins 0 DEFENCE was the name of the game for the Fins and for most of the first half they held a strong USC scoreless, with powerful tackling from both side producing a captivating forward dominated game. But with tiring legs the gaps appeared and although the Fins continued to tackle valiantly, it wasn’t quite enough.
U8 Noosa Blues 35 d Flinders 25 THIS was a great game played in good spirits. Noosa Blue players really worked for their mates with technical clean outs and some determined runs. Hammish, Oskar and Tex really got into the game. Joey defied the opposition and Jude worked like a Trojan all day. Pearl, Atticus, Hunter and Zay made the opposition work hard to bring them down. Atticus scored five tries and Jude was Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match.

Grammar holds Dragons at bay UNDER leaden skies the Eumundi Dragons U12s played their postponed clash with the Sunshine Coast Grammar School U12s team on Thursday 8 May. This was a match that was previously scheduled to be played at Maleny (Witta ) on 3 May. The fields looked magnificent and the boys played under the enthusiatic gaze of parents, supporters and a group of “grey nomads” who had camped next to the clubhouse and within full view of the playing pitch. The Eumundi boys started with en-
thusiasm but were soon over-run in attack by a well-drilled and co-ordinated Grammar outfit that exploited their dominance in the outside backs. The boys, however, did not give up and showing Dragons determination and resolve kept their heads up and continued on. Even though the final score was heavily in favour of the visitors, the Eumundi boys played better in the second half and ensured that Grammar did not match the number of points they scored before half time. A feature of the game was the spirit
in which it was played by both teams and the respect that was shown by all players to their team-mates and opposition players alike. The spirit of rugby is alive and well at Eumundi and at SCGS. All players in the Eumundi team played as well as they could on the day. No-one can take that away from them or doubt their commitment. There were, however, a couple of players who stood out. In the backs, Kaan, Latrell and Liam displayed solid defence and a hint of attack when the opposition allowed, while in the for-
wards Dougie, Thomas and player of the team, DT, performed extremely well. The enthusiastic and sportsmanlike support from the Eumundi parents and friends from the sidelines helped keep the players focused. All players and supporters at Eumundi realise that rugby, first and foremost, is a game, a contest between two teams. UNDER 7s THE Eumundi Dragons U7s continued their winning performance this
weekend against Matthew Flinders at Noosa. The whole team contributed to the fast-paced match with tries being scored at both ends of the field. In the end, the Dragons were able to cross the line just one more time to seal the victory. Special mention to the latest members of the Eumundi team - Solomon, Noah and Campbell - who all put in 100 per cent effort with great runs, lots of tags and for Solomon a try. Looking forward to this weekend’s match at Matthew Flinders. Go the Dragons!

Tiger’s tussle for top spot TIGER TALK JULIAN PITTS
What a seesawing tussle between the two top sides at Weyba Road last Saturday. And whilst the locals were gallant, it was the class of Mayne and in particular their forward focal point that gave them a 5 goal victory over the Fiona Winter/PJ Burns Noosa Tigers. In front of a pretty boister-
ous pro-Noosa crowd willing the Tigers to remain unbeaten for season 2014, it was Mayne who looked to have all the answers as they banged on 5 first quarter goals to lead the home side by 14 points at the first change. The Mayne forward line in particular looking like it might be a little too hot to handle despite the efforts of Mullen, Dempsey and Hendrie for the Tigers. However Noosa had other plans and rebounded beautifully in the second stanza through some great work of Shane `Dogga’ Davis and Seb Rogers through the middle and the work rate of small

forward Isaac Hughson. While the game was still for anyone to grab at the final change, it was the home side that held a one goal advantage. Unfortunately, that’s where it all ended for Noosa as the top class Mayne onballers Daly and Brown began to open up the game and send their side into attack at will. Gun-forward Ferguson booted 4 last quarter goals to finish with 7 for the game and prove the real difference. It’s twice in a fortnight that the Tigers have languished and lacked run in the final quarter however,
on both occasions, credit must go the opposition whose last quarter attack on the footy was first rate. But, there is certainly no need to panic down at Tigerland as they head down the Bruce Highway to face Aspley in the final game of round 7, this Saturday. Shane Davis was clearly the Tigers best with Mullen, Rogers, Dempsey, Hendrie and Hughson (3 goals) all worthy of mention. A special thank you to playwright David Williamson for the wonderful part he played in our second President’s Lunch and to all those who helped organise another great Tiger function.

Young ones show the way in the waves

BETWEEN THE FLAGS
I suppose you could say that my major job is that of liaison officer for the families.
RON LANE
SATURDAY 8am was a case of third time lucky, with the heavy rain holding off while the Noosa Surf Club conducted its third Saturday for the Seahorse Nippers; another great attendance 35 special nippers on the beach and 50 plus carers there to cover their every need.
This Saturday will indeed be a morning for the Seahorse Nippers to remember. Not only will it be the day when they receive their certificates of encouragement and club T-shirts, but also on this day, members of the National Council, the governing body for Surf Life Saving Australia, will be in attendance to gain firsthand knowledge of this great organisation. With word of their success spreading, not only to local clubs but also interstate, it is absolutely imperative that those at the top of the lifesaving movement become fully informed of the incredible work being done to help the families of our children in need. One of the chief organisers Nikki Mawby said: “One of the best things is the notes of encouragement we have received from families. “It is things like this that makes it all worthwhile.” As with all organisations it is the workers behind the scenes that really make it happen.
Lorna Garden. One such person is Lorna Garden. Lorna has been with the Seahorses since the beginning of the project. “I suppose you could say that my major job is that of liaison officer for the families. “I meet with Nikki during the week and we work on the paring of the children and their helpers.”
Lachie Lansdown.
This aspect of the program is of the
Lorna Garden utmost importance because it is vital for the children to feel at ease with their carers. For Lorna who works as a sports dietician, it all started 10 years ago when she joined the Peregian Club working with Nippers and eventually obtaining her bronze. Transferring to Noosa she has for the past four years held the responsible position of Patrol Captain. These duties plus her outstanding contribution to the Seahorses makes this lady someone who our club and the community at large should be very proud of. Another such worker who has also been
with the Seahorses since the start is Lachlan Lansdown. At 18 years of age Lachie is right at home in the world of surf lifesaving. During the weekdays he works as a lifeguard and on weekends he is a rostered member of Patrol 14. “I remember when we first started I was with a little fellow who just did not stop, he was darting around all over the place.” Now three years later he said: “Nothing has changed, they are still hard to keep up with,” but he added with a smile “it is all very rewarding”. Lachie’s career in lifesaving started as an under 11 Nipper. On becoming an under 13 he obtained his Surf Rescue Certificate and on entering the senior club passed his bronze medallion. For this young man one of the big attractions was board racing. “I found board competition a real challenge,” he said. Season 2013, as a member of the Noosa Taplin under 17 relay team competing in the National Titles at Kirra Beach, his team won the silver medal. However this was not his only success that year because competing as a team member in the Molokai 2 Oahu board relay over a distance of 52 kilometres his team won gold. This year he will do the race again, the only difference being he wants to go solo, all 52 kilometres, so as you can see our Seahorses Nippers are in good hands.

Morale boost for champions COOROY BOWLS WELL it apprears that T. Charles, D. Allisone, R. Alford and B. A 30km/h westerly wind whipped up choppy seas, seriously challenging the 1631 swimmers who braved such conditions. Noosa was represented by swimmers from Noosa Masters Swim Club and Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, all well prepared for the occasion. Masters Club swimmers: Dyanna Benny, Jan Croft, Anne Gripper, Bardie Gruber, Stephanie Jones, Grindle Rudder, Adele Tucker, Eulah Varty, Tony Frost, John Havilah and Ian Tucker. Noosa Heads SLSC sent Julie Fidler, Gina Lynch, Phoebe McCubbery, Rob Harney and Peter Fidler. Female age group place getters: 50-54 years, Gina (1st); 55-59 years, Stephanie (2nd); 60-64 years, Dyanna (3rd); 65-69 years, Bardie (2nd); 70-74 years, Jan (1st). Male age group place getters: 75-79 years, John (2nd). Noosa Masters Swim Club coach Jan Croft was full of praise for the swimmers completing 2.5 kilometres in such challenging conditions. “That was not for the faint-hearted,” Jan said.

Witty speech at club lunch By JORDAN CULLEN RENOWNED author and playwright David Williamson entertained a crowd of club members and sponsors during a speech at the Noosa Tigers President’s lunch on Sunday. Mr Williamson wrote satirical classic ‘The Club’, a 1980 play following Collingwood Football Club, as well as other well-known plays, TV series and movies including Balibo and Phar Lap. The multi-award winner won the audience’s attention with witty remarks and flashbacks of fond memories.
Club president Scott McKenzie said the event was a great way to get the sponsors together, creating a tighter community. “We have got some pretty big names this year coming, hopefully we can build on this year and hopefully it will be even better next year,” he said. The lunch was followed by Tigers v Mayne, with the Tigers going down in a final-quarter slump 10.5.65 to 15.8.98 after what was an overall tight game. Both teams had been undefeated this year.

Cool to the end By ANITA ANDERSON LAST week in the under-10s division, Cool Runnings and Blazers played a great game with Cool Runnings taking the win. Pedro, Levi, Matthew and Ben had great games. Good Shepherd had a hard fought win against the Purple Panthers with Alla, Jarvis and Breanna having standout games. Twisters went down fighting to the Maroons, and Curtis, Lilliana and Elle showed great skill in the game. In the under-12s division, That Cool Team proving too strong for Purple Storm with Jes-
sie, Sophie and Niamh producing great games. In a nail-biter, Good Shepherd and Steppers played out a draw, with Ethan, Chloe and Trey showing great determination for their teams. In a close clash, Saints were eventual winners over Banana Splits, with Ryan, Jamaica and Monique putting in mighty efforts. The afternoon rounded off with same great games in the under-14/16 division. Sunshine Rebels came away with the points against Good Shepherd. Giverny, Tyla and Jaidyn produced first rate games. Noosa 9s were too strong for Noosa 8s Blue with
Shani, Tayla and Shae playing well. ABL2 Driving School were first past the post against SBSHS 16s. Ashleigh. Abby, Holly and Rana showed great skill. St Teresa’s Black went down to Noosa 8s (boys), with Anna, Cody and Lily performing well. Last but never least, Inferno proved too strong for St Teresa’s Maroon. Taj, Paris and Kalani played strongly. Noosa Touch would also like to thank all of our referees. They continue to volunteer their time every week in order for us to play this great game. Your effort and dedication is appreciated.

Jonas downs dad WEEK three into the season and Noosa Table Tennis Club is are beginning to spot several teams likely to contend for the finals, however it appears it may be more of what happens on the night rather than apparent strength on paper! Bandits ( K. McDonald, O. Estraviz, J. Campbell , J. Mikkelson ) d Wizards (J. Brown, B. Trauer, S. Campbell, R. Byrne) 8/7. The unlikely pivotal rubber was
Jonas’s comeback win over his dad Steve in five sets. Axemen (R. Gore, C. Barry, D. Brown, L. Gore) d Gamblers (B. Blakemore, T. Latimer, S. Gardner, W. Byrne) 9/6. With David back on board the Axemen will now be a team to be feared. Blizzard B. Brown, M. Clarke, J. Murphy, R. Yao) d Windmills (S. Ciercan, B. Muller, T. Reeves, M. Duncan) 9/6. A gallant performance by the Windmills,
underpowered due to the absence of Allan. Let’s wait for when they meet in the finals! Competition night is Wednesday from 7pm and the club also has a practice session on Monday nights from 7.15pm. Social groups meet three afternoons a week. All sessions are held at the Bicentennial Centre in Sunshine beach. Please call 5474 5526 for any further information.
