By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG mayor Darryn Lyons has savaged City Hall bureacrats for putting barriers in the way of business opportunities. Department staff and some senior managers had refused to embrace his open-for-business philosophy and continued to stymie entrepreneurs wanting to invest in the region, an angry Cr Lyons said. “My biggest frustration as mayor is people telling me, ‘You say you’re open for business but as soon as we go to you we hit difficulties, departments saying you can’t do this or you can’t do that’. “This is my biggest frustration, breaking down that mindset and making it achievable for people who are coming to Geelong prepared to take financial risk.” Cr Lyons said Geelong had an historic reputation for entangling potential investors in red tape but his election as mayor had flagged a broad community desire to reshape City Hall’s “mindset”. His outburst followed recent criticism of some fellow councillors who he argued were resistant to change, angrily Tweeting:

“Never have I seen war more in elected people who are the future of our city! sad’’. His annoyance echoed difficulties that predecessor Keith Fagg blamed for forcing him from office less than a year after becoming Geelong’s first directly-elected mayor. Cr Lyons told the Independent Geelong had to “embrace everything – you can’t turn anyone away”. “But historically we have and some people won’t ever come back. There’s no doubt Geelong’s lost a lot,” he said. “Council has to have open arms, a smile on its faces and great customer service. It’s not rocket science – treat people badly and they won’t come back and knock on your door. “Jobs are needed desperately and there’s been an overwhelming vote for change but the bureaucracy still needs to change. Senior management needs to understand what this mayor wants. “Over the last six months in certain areas that has happened but in many areas it still hasn’t. We need it to happen. Continued page 7

A CLEANER GEELONG IS IN YOUR HANDS
ANGLING expert and On the Bite columnist Brian Long has handed the rod to new ownership and management at his iconic fishing shop on Shannon Ave. Brian, who followed legendary dad Ray into the Manifold Heights institution, finished fulltime duties last week as he began the descent into a well-earned retirement. So what does a seasoned retail operator do to keep busy after so many years in the trade? Golf? Travel? Silly question? “Fishing,” answered Brian with a weary smile.

The Brisbane Lions sponsor’s latest TV commercial features Geelong’s embarrassing game in round 13 last year when the Cats surrendered a 52-point lead to lose to the underdogs. Too bad insurance doesn’t extend to losing footy games. A PLANNED Geelong public meeting on fracking has raised eyebrows after organisers denied permission for a local radio show to record and broadcast the proceedings. But Mik Aidt, of The Pulse’s Sustainable Hour program, was unsurprised, despite his show broadcasting four other public meetings on fracking in the past couple of years. “I assume it’s because it’s also the first time Lakes Oil comes to
the microphone at a public meeting in our region. They probably have good reasons to be nervous about that,” Mik concluded. So much for the “public” meeting concept. INDY reader Peter Mackinlay has noted a discrepency in local fundraising for cancer research. On this week’s Letters page he discusses the focus on breast cancer, and rightly so, but then highlights the lesser prominence of prostate cancer despite its higher Australian mortality rate. Pink buns are raising money for breast cancer, Peter observes, but what’s the prostate option? He provides an, er, cheeky suggestion. For his effort Peter earns two thumbs up, or perhaps a finger.

SEXY ads bug Geelong people more than the average Australian, new figures suggest. Advertising Standards Bureau said the use of sex and nudity was behind Geelong complaint rates up to three times the national average. The bureau said almost 38 per cent of its Geelong ad complaints in 2013 were about sexy content. The national average was 23 per cent. Sex and nudity was the biggest source of ad complaints nationally and in the Geelong region, the bureau said. Geelong was also a hotbed of
concern about discrimination and vilification in advertising, which accounted for 25 per cent of the region’s complaints compared to the national average of 18 per cent. Internet and social media ads were also an issue for Geelong. The bureau said Geelong people were twice as likely to complain about internet ads and three times more likely to grumble about social media advertising. However, television remained the number-one source of angst, generating 60 per cent of the region’s complaints. The bureau said Highton resi-
dents complained the most, accounting for 13 per cent of complaints from the region. Torquay and Grovedale were next with 10 per cent each, followed by Barwon Heads and Lara at seven per cent. Bureau chief executive officer Fiona Jolly said the overall number of complaints from the region was “relatively low” but she encouraged consumers to lodge complaints on the bureau’s website. “If the complaint falls within the codes the board will decide whether to dismiss or uphold the complaint,” she said.

Council funding focus back on Geelong CBD By NOEL MURPHY CITY Hall’s new budget has achieved what former mayor Keith Fagg could not, redirecting $7 million from wards into central Geelong. The city cash splash centrepiece of new mayor Darryn Lyons’ first budget allocated $4 million from council coffers and will seek $3 million from Spring Street’s Geelong Advancement Fund as the Napthine Government, with critical marginal seats in the region, faces an election later this year. The money for the city centre is almost the same amount as previously allocated annually to a councillor fund for ward projects until the Govern-
ment axed the scheme earlier this year. The budget also included a rates rise 50 per cent higher than the CPI inflation rate and a 25 per cent increase in city centre weekday parking fees. Buckley ward’s Andy Richards was the only councillor to vote against the budget, saying it lacked balance “between funding the Geelong CBD and the outlying areas of the City of Greater Geelong”. Prominent Geelong businessman Frank Costa, who backed a citycentric charge at last year’s mayoral election, welcomed the budget’s CBD focus, describing the city centre as “critical to Geelong’s future”. Mr Fagg agreed, saying “things
are going in the direction they should have been going in”. Cr Lyons said the 2014/2015 budget would deliver “tangible projects to help foster more retail, more business, more events and more residential living in central Geelong”. The budget responded to community demand, he said. Deputy mayor Bruce Harwood, who strongly defended the ward funding system, said the challenge now was to ensure outer suburbs were “not forgotten” and continued to be “recognised for the importance of their community and sporting involvement”. Lara’s outspoken Cr Tony Ansett, a harsh critic of changes to the ward
funding system, said the budget was “put together under a lot of external pressure” plus a change of mayor six months ago. Cr Richards, Labor’s candidate for the state seat of South Barwon, said residents submitted many community funding applications but “very few” succeeded “even though they were great projects”. “At a time when Liberal state and federal governments are cutting funding to everything ... council has a responsibility to be fair to all residents, whether they live close to the CBD or out in the suburbs and coastal towns.”

He said the March quarter list was down 23 per cent from 2267 in 2013 to 1743 this year after a four per cent increase in surgeries for the periods.

NATIONAL retailers face caps on shop space in Armstrong Creek’s town centre despite an independent panel opposing them. New state zonings have given Geelong’s council power to apply for caps of 40,000 square metres. Council and retail giants were at loggerheads over the restrictions last year. Coles and Woolworths argued the “unnecessary restriction” added “additional costs and inconvenience for the developers” of the 92-hectares precinct between Surf Coast Hwy and Boundary, Barwarre and Burvilles Rds. A report to council this week warned that new shopping centres without caps could jeopardise the city’s “retail hierarchy ... particularly the significant role of central Geelong”. But the new zones allowed caps on shopping centres outside the metropolitan area, the report said. Council planning portfolio holder Michelle Heagney said Armstrong Creek needed a “true main-street town centre rather than a big-box environment so typical in other new centres around the state”.

There have been a number of deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning in Victoria in the last few years. Energy Safe Victoria is aware of countless near misses where people have nearly died from carbon monoxide poisoning. It is mainly faulty or unserviced gas heaters which can cause carbon monoxide to be produced. Energy Safe Victoria and the Plumbing Industry Commission recommend that gas heating be serviced by a licensed or registered gasfitter before the start of winter. ALEX Hecker’s plans to be an archaeologist or museum curator might go on hold after she was shortlisted for next month’s Miss Universe Australia pageant. The dark-haired Highton beauty - an anthropology/ancient history graduate studying for a masters in cultural heritage - is one of seven Victorians who will be scrutinised for their beauty, talent, education and confidence in next month’s national final. A win will send her to an International Miss Universe Pageant in the US. But Alex wasn’t getting ahead of herself after becoming a national finalist this week. “I had to get an assignment in today, so I was back to reality and I have another due the day after the Australian presentation.” The hard-worker maintains a hectic lifestyle as a racing industry ambassador, a model, presenter, a retail worker three days a week and travelling to Deakin University’s Burwood campus twice weekly. Alex said she was “absolutely loving” her masters studies. “Right now I’m focussing on museum issues and ethics and cultural policies. It sounds fairly dry but I find it fascinating - it’s focussed on Australian and indigenous issues, which I really like.” The pageant might sound easy in comparison but it’s not. “There’s so much before the actual day,” Alex said. “All the preparation, there’s a lot involved in the beauty and stage presence, but there’s also the intelligence side to it. You’ve got to be the whole package, not just a model. “The question category could be anything personal to political ... the thing is to try to stay calm.” Alex said she was sticking to a strict exercise regime, staying healthy and keeping up with current affairs for the 6 June finals. She was also working with “one or two” designers on a special gown for the event. “It has to be pretty knock-out,” she said.

Rattled residents on city trial:
‘Trucking hell’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A “DOG’S dinner” trial of new routes has simply shifted central Geelong’s truck traffic problem elsewhere, according to residents of eastern McKillop St. Frank Kennedy said the trial, banning trucks from Malop and Mercer Sts, had antagonised McKillop St residents. They now suffered a “massive” traffic increase in their own street as semi-trailers and smaller trucks constantly used McKillop and Meakin Sts as a “rat run” to Ryrie St, he said. Some residents had moved bedrooms from the front of their houses to escape the noise, while windows rattled as trucks passed. Mr Kennedy said trucks using the McKillop St and Ormond Rd intersection often sped up to get

through amber lights. “We went through all this 10 years ago. They spent $66 million on building the Breakwater bridge with the idea for it to be the permanent truck route. “We had no problems until the council reinvented the wheel and introduced the truck trial with no consultation.” Mr Kennedy said council had asked for feedback but had yet to tell residents the criteria for determining whether the trial was successful. “If they say getting trucks out of central Geelong is a win, it means a loss for McKillop St residents. Our end of the street is meant to be for neighbourhood traffic only.” State Member for Geelong Ian Trezise called for tougher policing of trucks trying to run traffic lights
for all MEN of all AGES
at the McKillop St and Ormond Rd intersection. Mr Trezise said more than 500 trucks were using alternative routes since the ban on Mercer and Malop Sts began in February. “The intersection has a long cycle of lights and trucks are alleged to be trying to beat the red to save time without pulling up.” Mr Trezise raised the issue in parliament last week, calling on the Transport Minister to alert Victoria Police. The trial also forced trucks on LaTrobe Tce and Ryrie St to use two lanes to make left turns, he said. “Trucks coming up LaTrobe and turning into Ryrie have to hook from the middle lane across the left lane into Ryrie St - that’s a disaster waiting to happen.”

Cuts to welfare scare agencies By John Van Klaveren FEDERAL budget cuts will worsen the precarious situations facing many local families, according to welfare agencies. Uniting Care Geelong chief Trevor Schenk said many local agencies were “holding their breath” to judge the ongoing impact. “The losses to people who can least afford it and disadvantaged communities puts the pressure on us to be resourced enough to meet that need,” Mr Schenk said. “We’re already pushed fairly hard even though so far we’ve been able to find ways of meeting current needs. “But if needs increase and funding decreases it could be a really big challenge. “The burden of this budget
falls overwhelmingly on families, pensioners and young people.” The budget also cut 16,500 public service jobs, with the tax office and CSIRO, both of which have offices in Geelong, bearing the brunt. Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said most of the job cuts would be confined to Canberra. The region would instead receive a “major boost” from a range of skills, training and education measures, she said. “These measures are all about making it easier to find work, as well as preparing us for the jobs of the future.” Ms Henderson pointed to multi-million dollar funds established in response to the car manufacturing collapse and Alcoa’s impending Point Henry closure.
She said a $484.2 million Entrepreneurs’ Infrastructure Program would bring research and business together to develop and commercialise home-grown ideas. “A $476 million Industry Skills Fund will put a new focus on delivering the skills being sought by employers, to bridge the gap between training and employment. The Trade Support Loans scheme will offer loans of up to $20,000 over the life of an apprenticeship.” The Australian Local Government Association said councils also suffered in the budget, which froze indexation of a key grant for three years. The loss of increases in Financial Assistance Grants meant Australian councils would lose $925 million, the associaiton said.

Event no obstacle to these racers By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN BOASTING two top 10 obstacle racers and an Australian team representative has made Geelong a powerhouse in the growing niche sport. Geelong Obstacle Racing Club has over 60 members, with 50 preparing for an event in a national Spartan Race series at Bamganie, near Meredith, on 31 May. Club founder Jase Lydon said members travelled around the country to participate in obstacle races as part of an Australian league. “Geelong’s top-10 racers, Tim Kacprzak and Darren Clarke, are at the top of their game at the moment,” he said. “We also have Kate Barsby who represented Australia in the Spartan race in Vermont, USA, last year.” Obstacle races challenge participants to scale three-metre walls, traverse rope courses, cross balance beams and throw a spear, all while running through creeks and mud holes. Mr Lydon said the sport now had a “cult following”.

Latrobe Health Centre Live Well. Move Well. Be Happy.
Latrobe Health Centre are behind Spinal Health Week 2014 to promote the importance of living a healthy lifestyle AUSTRALIANS are living longer and we want to be healthy, active and capable of enjoying those extra years. Unfortunately, back pain is one of the top three causes of disability in Australia. Instead of enjoying retirement when you plan for it, back pain can force some people into early retirement. Over a quarter of a million Australians are being forced into early retirement because of back pain or arthritic pain. Back pain is a common ailment for Geelong residents and one in eleven residents can be expected to have back problems this year. Seeing a chiropractor can help reduce your back pain and correct your posture, which may prevent you from retiring too early. Chiropractic care is an effective management for different types of back pain. Improving your postural fitness, such as not sitting down for too long, sitting correctly, and using proper techniques when bending or lifting can help to avoid damage to your spine. Local chiropractors at Latrobe Health Centre have called upon Geelong residents to take up the challenge of improving their lifestyle habits to better care for their backs. Monday Thursday

GEELONG’S efforts to cash in on the cruise ship market needs serious and expensive ramping up, according to new industry findings. The Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine report said a dedicated ship terminal and extensive marketing to boost Geelong’s profile were crucial to building the region as a cruise destination. Corio Bay welcomed five ships in the 2013/2014 cruise season, two because of overcrowding at Melbourne’s Station Pier. The local economy earned $713,200 from the ships, based
on 3300 passenger and crew days in Geelong. The report said Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsual were becoming more popular among passengers, even though next season’s arrivals would drop from five ships to three. Melbourne expected 73 cruise visits in the 2014/2015 season. Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons is leading a council campaign for $25 million to build a new Yarra St Pier to cater for cruise ships. Council has earmarked $5 million for the pier and Royal Geelong Yacht Club would put up $2.5 million. Cr Lyons has also refocussed decades-old ambitions for a conference centre from Eastern Park
to the pier and suggested it should also accommodate a relocated Geelong Performing Arts Centre. Geelong needs a berth for cruise ships because Cunningham Pier has become inadequate, forcing the vessles to transfer passengers to shore on smaller boats. Council estimates a new Yarra Street Pier could generate $40 million and 400 jobs over 10 years. The tourism body’s report said cruise line operators were likely to visit more often if operational costs were lowered and maritime laws and restrictions relaxed. “Australia is a challenging place for small ships to make profit,” the report said.

Prized parrot’s Tassie triumph By NOEL MURPHY A RARE orange-bellied parrot has been sighted near Anglesea after being released to the wild in Tasmania late last year. The first captive-bred example of its species seen on the mainland this year was spotted on 29 April and 2 and 7 May, said Save the Orange-Bellied Parrot campaigner Debbie Lustig. Dubbed ‘Blue L Silver’, the three-year-old female’s arrival in Victoria after a 580km journey up the west coast of Tasmania over King Island and across Bass Strait gave “fresh hope for the survival of the beleaguered species”, Ms Lustig said. Orange-bellied parrots number just 70 in the wild, with another 330 in a captive-breeding program. “Blue L Silver has proven
SIGHTED: An orange-bellied parrot. herself hard-wired to migrate between Tasmania and the mainland despite being raised in a cage and being descended from birds that have been in captivity for five generations,” Ms Lustig said. “The rare female parrot hatched at Taroona government breeding facility (in Hobart) in the summer of 2011/2012 and was fitted with leg bands Blue L (left leg) and silver (right leg). She went on to produce three chicks in 2012/2013.
“In November 2013 she was released to the wilderness of Melaleuca, Tasmania, as one of the 24 birds of the first captive-bred release since 2008. She also bred there, producing an impressive five chicks.” Ms Lustig said the parrot had been observed feeding on a plant never previously recorded as a food for orange-bellied parrots seaberry saltbush. The endangered parrot became a political issue several times in the past when its presence conflicted with developments including a petrochemical complex proposed for Point Lillias and a $220 million wind farm at Bald Hills in Victoria south-east. In recent months a No TasWind Farm Group has argued a $2 billion wind farm proposed for King Island would threaten the parrot.

“WORSENING congestion” has prompted calls for a traffic study at Drysdale and Clifton Springs. Drysdale Clifton Springs Community Association secretary Neil McGuinness said traffic congestion on High St and Jetty Rd had become a major issue. He said 70 concerned residents at a recent public meeting had put the study request to state Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville and the seat’s Liberal candidate, Cr Ron Nelson.
Mr McGuiness said the construction of a proposed service station between High St and Jetty Rd was “unanimously unpopular as it will significantly worsen congestion”. “The community wants a traffic study to investigate congestion and recommend improvements.” Mr McGuiness said a proposed road connecting new Curlewis housing developments to Portarlington Rd was needed immediately. “The developers are saying

Ford and Alcoa top US market By NOEL MURPHY FORD has posted a loss of $267 million, its second worst, ahead of closing its North Geelong manufacturing operations and sacking 600 workers. But in the United States the car-maker has teamed up with Alcoa to launch a new aluminium Ford F-150 pickup, the nation’s biggest-selling motor vehicle after 760,000 sales last year. The Ford losses followed a dramatic slump in sales reported last week, with Falcon ute and Territory plummeting 55.8 and 44.7 per cent on sales 12 months ago. Geelong’s Ford workforce is set to lose 510 jobs by October
2016 but 300 will wrap up next month. Alcoa will shut its Point Henry operations, cutting a total 800 jobs, from August. But while the Australian fortunes of both multi-nationals are on the skids, presenting significant fallout for the Geelong economy, the deal between the pair to make aluminium F-150s in the US has been hailed as a groundbreaking development. Alcoa hit social media this week with Twitter posts linking to industry bulletins and references to the “monumental opportunity” from the collaboration. Ford unveiled the all-aluminium F-150 at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year. The ve-
hicle is more than 300kg lighter than its previous steel design and aimed squarely at enhanced fuel efficiency. Alcoa will spend $US575 million to expand production plants in Iowa and Tennessee to meet demand under long-term auto contracts. Media reports also point to Alcoa competitor Novelis commissioning two new automotive sheet lines in New York and China. Alcoa has told the Independent the US deal has no ramifications for Geelong. The Independent was unable to gain comment from Ford on whether it might export the F-150 from the US to Australia.

REGARDING the Independent’s 25 April story about a Japanese spy plane flying over Torquay in 1942 and Greg Wane’s subsequent query about whether Torquay had anything to spy on then, I can tell him what was there in the 1940s. A trench ran from a concrete gun emplacement on Thompsons Creek at Point Impossible to the far end of Fisherman’s Beach, Torquay. The trench was lined with supporting boards and protected by rolls of barbed wire. Interspersed along the open trench-line were covered command posts. As a deterrent to anyone engaged in air surveillance, a dummy gun was set up on the beach near the end of Cowrie Rd. This bit of subterfuge consisted of a hefty log mounted to resemble a gun from the air. Backing up this network was a corduroy road running along the dunes behind the trench-line for transport of troops, equipment and supplies. A corduroy road is constructed of lengths of timber laid cross-wise along the route of the track, producing a ribbed or corduroy effect.

Tanks could be seen careering around the White family’s paddock and charging up and down the steep banks as they crossed Deep Creek. All of this was situated at Torquay because of our enemies’ interest in the long, wide, sandy beach, which was ideal for an invasion by landing craft as opposed to the high cliffs to the south-west. This information came from a boy who observed these activities and who later became my husband, Stan. Melva Stott Anglesea

Prostate cancer is thus a deadlier killer than breast cancer but there is no fundraising campaign for this disease. Maybe this is because breasts are more visible, highly regarded and aesthetically pleasing than prostates. Perhaps bakers and pastry chefs could start a similar fundraiser for prostate cancer victims. Could I suggest a chocolate donut drive? Peter Mackinlay Geelong

In comparison, however, prostate cancer claimed 3111 victims in 2009, or 4.3 per cent of all deaths

Letters Taken to our leaders
Government living up to its health promises Climate not for dummies IN RESPONSE to a story in last week’s Geelong Independent, headlined ‘Government ‘duds north’ over hospital’, the Victorian Coalition Government has committed more than $200 million to health infrastructure projects across the Geelong region. The Government has a strong record of delivering more services to Geelong and the region. As the community knows, Geelong Hospital is a hub of activity as its massive refurbishment project progresses. The Government’s plan for the region not only includes central Geelong, it includes de-
livering in full on our election commitments for services on, or adjacent to, Deakin University at Waurn Ponds. This process is live. We have listened to the Geelong community about the health needs of the northern suburbs and Barwon Health North will meet them with a $28 million commitment. Labor did none of this in 11 years by failing to deliver services in the Waurn Ponds area as well as taking the people of northern Geelong for granted. David Davis MP Victorian Minister for Health

ing of this great and important program. David Koch MP Member for Western Victoria
CLIMATE change is too difficult for most people to understand, which has helped deniers gain the upper ground. Highlighting uncertainties and creating doubt has worked for a long time. The tobacco, drug and asbestos industries used the same tactics. Pointing out a ship icebound, snow falling all the way to Florida and how it’s still cold riding a motorbike are examples of this. The media needs to get the message of climate science across so the people can understand it, otherwise we risk losing our ability to halt the serious impact on future generations and ecosystems. Amid the projections for the world as climate change worsens this century is a rising risk of species extinction, adverse effects on crops, displacement of more people and significant economic losses. Few fortunes are to be made in scientific research, so the motivating factors are mainly to discover truths and leave a legacy beneficial for others. Bruce Holmes Portarlington 1134732-MB20-14
I WAS delighted to represent the deputy premier in Geelong last week to launch the 2014 Barwon Community Leadership Program. The program, which Committee for Geelong established in 2011, is designed to develop the region’s next generation of leaders. Participants come from a wide range of community groups and backgrounds. They share a passion for supporting their communities, with many already active in community roles or in volunteering. Throughout the 10-month program they develop their leadership skills and meet business and community leaders with expertise in many fields. The program aims to develop strong leaders and advocates who can speak out on behalf for their communities. The Victorian Coalition Government has provided $30,000 for this $94,000 program through a $1 billion Regional Growth Fund. The remaining funds will be provided by Avalon Airport, Williamson Foundation, numerous community partners and generous philanthropic contributions. My congratulations to the 15 participants of this

GLBTI OK by COGG on IDAHOBIT
FLAGS: Jan Farrell.
Monte Carlo
GAY AND transgender flags have flown over City of Greater Geelong’s headquarters for the first time in support of various sexualities. Council hoisted the flags to mark International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). Councillor Jan Farrell said the flying of the flags sent a “strong message” to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI)
communities. “We need to make a special effort to acknowledge each part of the GLBTI acronym (because) the needs and experiences of each person are different,” she said. “Trans and gender-diverse people experience much higher levels of discrimination and abuse, resulting in poorer health outcomes. “The raising of the trans flag is one small way we are showing our support.”

All-Day music for Schneider
By Samantha Brimacombe
A whirlwind tour including Sydney Opera House and Melbourne’s iconic Arts Centre Playhouse will bring Melinda Schneider to Geelong for an encore performance of Doris: So Much More Than The Girl Next Door. Schneider, an Australian country music star, and co-writer David Mitchell, of Dusty and Shout! fame, have entwined classic Doris Day songs such as Sentimental Journey, Que Sera, Sera, Everybody Loves a Lover and Secret Love with key aspects and littleknown facts of the American entertainer’s journey through Hollywood, four tumultuous marriages and eventual financial strife. Schneider praised the talent of Day, who turned 90 in April. “She could sing, dance and act,” Schneider said. “I thought then she was the best of everything a woman could be and when I grew up I wanted to be just like her.” Reviews of the show suggest Schneider has maintinaed her stage prowess despite an 18-month break to raise new son Sullivan. They have described the production as “marvellous”, “invigorating” and Schneider “one of this country’s most important artists”. The promoters said Doris was “a big production performed by a big talent with a literal runway of various Hollywood fashions spanning Doris’s 39 feature films”. Schneider, who has won six Golden Guitars at Tamworth’s Country Music Awards of Australia, appears on stage with two “fabulous” male singer/dancers and a “swinging” Doris Big Band. Geelong Performing Arts Centre will host Doris: So Much More Than The Girl Next Door 9 June.

Inspector here for laughs at GPAC CLASSIC comedy The Government Inspector arrives in Geelong next week after sell-out seasons in Sydney and Melbourne. Director Simon Stones said the new adaptation was cobbled together in three weeks after his bid to stage The Philadelphia Story fell through due to rights issues over the script. Stone said he had taken a liberal approach to The Government Inspector, an 1836 Nikolai Gogol

tale of fraud and imposters. “I’ve been looking for the opportunity to direct The Government Inspector for a long time, so I’m incredibly excited that we now are able to take this show on with such a talented group of individuals attached.” The story focuses on troupe of actors trying to learn an unfamiliar play just three weeks out before opening night. The troupe must also contend-
with a foreign director, shipped in from Uzbekistan, who isn’t quite what he seems. Promoters describe the producation as a “laugh-out-loud, highspirited show ... with jokes and madcap antics the cast will have audiences wondering where reality ends and fiction begins. Geelong Performing Arts Centre hosts The Government Inspector from Tuesday to Thursday.

MacKillop carer call MACKILLOP Family Services believes being a foster carer is one of the ultimate volunteering roles. The organisation hopes National Volunteer Week will inspire more people in Geelong to think again about foster caring. “It takes someone extraordinary to be a foster carer,” says MacKillop’s Kylie Drummy. “Each day we’re inspired by the remarkable commitment shown by our foster carers.” MacKillop provides foster care in Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast for some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the area. Many of these children have not had the best start in life and many more foster carers are desperately needed. “All you need is the patience, resilience and understanding to support a child in need,” Ms Drummy. Foster carers with MacKillop come from all types of backgrounds and families. A variety of caring options are available, including full-time, part-time and respite. More information is available by phoning 5278 9211 or visiting mackillop.org.au.

Cats hypnotist Bizarre at RSL
EVEN sceptics will believe their eyes when comedic hypnotist Bizzare Gazzard casts his spell over the audience at Geelong RSL this Saturday night, according to promoters. They said qualified clinical hypnotherapist and 10-year veteran stage actor and comedian Rohan Gazzard had combined two of his great loves to create “an hysterical and amazing show”. Gazzard will pull his tricks with partner in crime, stand-up comedian Adam ‘Chicken’ Palmer. The promoters said their show combined, music, costumes, comedy and hypnotism to provide an evening of “hilarious and mesmerising entertainment not only for those in the audience but also the brave volunteers subjected to Gazzard’s hypnotic powers of persuasion”. “Previous shows across Australia have seen Gazzard astounded at what unfolds and he has said not even he can predict what will happen when volunteers are under hypnotic influence.” Recent victims of Gazzard’s hypnotism have included Vega FM’s Dave O’Neil and Shaun Micallef and NOVA 100’s Jeff Tyler. Gazzard also has a strong following on the footy club show circuit after performing for various AFL teams including Geelong, Western Bulldogs and St Kilda. The promoters described the show as a “fun, light-hearted evening of comedy where the volunteer is the star and Gazzard merely the commentator”.

College offers more options CHRISTIAN College has four campuses throughout the Geelong region, from pre-kinder to year 12. The school expects to expand in the near future through a Surf Coast campus offering pre-kinder to year seven, proposed to open in 2017. A Christian College education strives to develop the spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional capacity of students and enable them through example and positive mentoring to become fine citizens demonstrating integrity, compassion and social responsibility. Christian College cultivates
an atmosphere of care and concern for each student’s character, growth and well-being, within a value system and set of priorities derived from the Christian faith. Honesty, integrity, compassion, respect and tolerance underpin the expectations of all interaction within the college program. Through its Christian values, the college guides students to have empathy and real-life experiences actively assisting the community. Solid foundations in literacy and numeracy are laid at the junior schools through the Early Years structure. This leads on to the engaging and innovative
middle schools program where students study core subjects. Students are offered a wide range of elective studies to develop new skills and interests before making choices for their future tertiary studies and careers. Christian College offers a balanced range of opportunities across all campuses, including VCE, VCE VET and VCAL at its senior school. Christian College develops an environment to cater for all students and help them find their individual gifts and strengths that will assist them in their ability to build capacity to learn.

Food demand drives college WITH the recent emphasis on the food production and export future for Australia, Marcus Oldham College stands ready to educate the leading food producers of the future. Marcus Oldham principal Dr Simon Livingstone says to maximize these business opportunities and secure the food of our populations requires skills, knowledge and well planned, effective, education and training. “Many skills can be learnt on the job, but the development of the high level cognitive thinking needed for sophisticated management decision making is best learnt off farm in a tertiary setting,” Dr Livingstone says.
Marcus Oldham delivers a Bachelor of Business (Agriculture), a four year program including 11 months of industry placement in second year; Bachelor of Business (Agribusiness) with a nested one-year Diploma of Agribusiness followed by the Associate Degree in Agribusiness, culminating in the full degree in third year. Entry requirements for these programs are successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent, being at least 18 years of age and a minimum of one year pre-entry industry experience. Students studying the oneyear Diploma of Equine Manage-
ment may enter College directly from Year 12 if they have sufficient horse management skills and are at least 18 years of age at the start of the academic year. A valuable scholarship and bursary program is available and all courses are eligible for FEEHELP. The Postgraduate Program includes a Graduate Certificate in Agribusiness and Graduate Diploma of Agribusiness. This Program is offered online with printed study guides, tutorial support, administrative assistance and student discussion groups. Visit marcusoldham.vic.edu. au for more information.

Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College empowers young women to be the best that they can be.

Kids creative on the couch
COVENANT College year eight students have put their new creative talents on display with an outdoor mosaic couch sculpture. Working with visual arts teacher Leah Grant, product design technology teacher Stephen Scott and visual arts coordinator Erin Caudullo, the students used a range of contemporary and traditional skills, techniques and processes to build the couch for display within the college grounds as a permanent artwork. The project followed their
prior studies in year seven when they learned about sculpture and viewing works in the round when they created with Ms Caudullo a limestone sculpture for the college grounds. The students then used their knowledge of op art and sculpture to design and create the couch in the final term of 2013. Each student contributed to the construction and design of the couch frame, which was initially stripped back and disassembled, built up with timber and
fibre-glassed. In focus groups they designed contrasting patterns for each surface. The patterns were transferred onto the couch, which was then mosaicked with black and white tiles, reflecting the illusionistic work of focus artist Bridget Riley. The students were required to develop many new skills and to work cooperatively together to create theirs amazing artwork that started as a seemingly impossible vision many years earlier.

AT MATTHEW Flinders Girls Secondary College, the curriculum is firmly based on the principle that knowledge is generated from hands-on, active learning. The year so far has been filled with exciting student learning experiences. An enthusiastic group of students and staff spent their term holiday exploring the fascinating and ancient culture of China, while practising their language skills on the unsuspecting locals. The group travelled extensively across the country soaking up the history of Beijing’s Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors of Xi’an and venturing into the higher altitudes of Tibet. Another group of intrepid travellers departed for a school holiday adventure in Central Australia, where they honed their bush survival skills, explored national parks and learned about the richness and complexity of Aboriginal culture and history. Planning is also well underway for trips later in the year. In July, the world-renowned Sweethearts are heading to the United States for a series of gigs including a performance at the world’s

GEELONG Grammar School believes learning is life’s greatest adventure. The school’s Bostock House campus at Newtown is often the first step on the path to an exceptional future, providing students the opportunity to fulfil their potential. “At Bostock House we endeavour to give our children genuine opportunities to discover and develop their strengths and talents,” explains the house’s head, Daryl Moorfoot. “By incorporating and utilising their strengths in everyday life we
believe that they will perform better, enjoy greater life satisfaction, have higher energy levels and feel happier. In short, they will flourish.” Bostock House combines academic rigour, small class sizes and the school’s transformational Positive Education programme with a rich array of specialist subjects including music, art, drama, physical education, Japanese and library, from early learning to year four. “We want our children to work and live in an environment in which they know that people care
about them and respect them,” Mr Moorfoot says. “We want them to feel confident that they will be supported, encouraged and prepared to take risks with their learning. We want them to feel a genuine sense of belonging and to develop a positive mindset in all areas of their lives. “Positive Education teaches us that all these things are important for one’s physical and mental health and development.” Appointments for a tour of Bostock House with Mr Moorfoot are available by phoning 5221 7760.

The trip through the tight twists and turns in lashing rain and into the clouds remains one of the most striking I have ever taken. The little Audi not once gave cause for alarm, with the German company’s signature quattro allwheel drive system on full song, the hot hatch gripped the narrow road like a rock climber on a vertical face. The memories came flooding back recently when I spent time with the latest of the Audi S3 line, the Sportback 2.0 TFSI quattro S tronic automatic. There’s also a six-speed manual. Both come to market at $59,900. The test car featured metallic pearl effect paint, at $1050 extra, and the S performance package consisting of 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, red brake calipers, Nappa leather sports seats, 3D design black inlays, Bang & Olufsen sound system, LED headlamps, LED daytime running lights and Audi magnetic ride, all for $4990. Typical of a hot hatch, the Audi S3 Sportback plays on the theme of its A3 sibling, the lower bonnet and sloping D-pillar adding the sharper visuals of a sporty car without going over the top. The single-frame radiator grille frame is chromed, the insert matte grey and carries expansive Audi rings and an understated S3 insignia, while horizontal twin crossbars have a shiny aluminium look. The redesigned bumper has integrated air inlets with aluminium-look double ribs. The test car was fitted with optional LED headlamps, previously available only on high-end vehicles, which not only look the part but provide superior illumination. LED technology has been extended to lights at the rear where the bumper has been redesigned. Completely done out in black, the cabin interior is a match for the sporty exterior. Instrument

Pedals are aluminium, sports seats are leather trimmed, the rear positions, firm and flat, offering adequate legroom and headroom to match. Boot space is a fully usable 340 litres. IndySport Freo faces fresh Cats By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A FRESHER and fitter Geelong flies west to take on recent nemesis Fremantle at Pattersons Stadium on Saturday evening after enjoying a bye. Coach Chris Scott said the break enabled players to be put through their full training paces, apart from those on the injury list. “The break means we will be a bit fresher,” Scot said confidently. “We’ve been able to dictate our program without too much consideration for how the guys have come off a game, so we haven’t had to modify anything because of that.” Scott said the coaches had made good use of the bye. “If you ask the question would we prefer to have played to having the break then we’d take the break. “But it’s marginal, it’s a one percenter. “With more byes than in previous years clubs are still working their way through what the best program is for them. “We feel like we’ve got a pretty good program in place now. We know how our boys probably will respond and will go into the game better than had we played on the weekend.” Despite his confidence, Scott warned that Fremantle would present a stiff challenge. “We’ve played okay there. The last couple of years those two Perth sides have tended to be pretty good opposition. “But we’re going into this one in good shape and fairly confident of the shape our game is in but also aware the opposition are an accomplished team and will present a big challenge.” The full complement of Geelong’s defence will be restored with the return of Andrew Mackie, who Scott welcomed back. “If you take out a player of that calibre there tends to be a little bit of a domino effect,” Scott admitted.
HE’S BACK: Andrew Mackie trains this week as he prepares to return from injury. 120182 Picture: REG RYAN “Coaches tend to roll out the cliché that one goes down and you just roll out another one but I don’t really subscribe to that theory. “Your really good players are hard to replace. You do your best to put in a player who can play that role within the system but your good players are there for a reason. “Getting him back will have a positive influence on the team and allow others to play more of their core roles.” Scott backed his group of younger players,
some of whom slipped in form over the past two weeks. “Given we had the bye and had the chance to really manage those guy’s workload and prepare them as well as possible I think that mitigates that risk to some extent. “We’re really conscious of our inexperienced players and giving them the best chance to play well at AFL level. “We go in, in really good shape, good personnel, well rested, well prepared, ready to play our best.”
Wobbly Warriors blow lead, now face Avondale By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors let a two-goal lead slip from its grasp to record a 4-3 loss against Sunshine George Cross in last Saturday’s National Premier League soccer action. The game began with the second shortest player on the park, Anthony Cassar, heading home unguarded to put Georgies up at the three-minute mark. Minutes later the shortest player, Robert Zadworny, equalised in similar fashion for the Warriors. Georgies then peppered the goals for the next five minutes, coming around North Geelong’s
flanks to provide opportunities for their marksmen. The Warriors turned defence into attack when Zadworny cleverly laid a ball in the path of Reardo Luka to cleanly slot home his side’s second goal. Straight after halftime Mark Paleka pounced on a defensive mistake to send the Warriors 3-1 up. With 30 mins to go Nejdett Sahin deflected a Georgies free kick from 25m, which left Frano Saric flat-footed to tamely cross the line. Twenty minutes later Sunshine threw everything forward in long balls, applying pressure down the Warriors’ left flank until Lewis
IN FORM: The Warriors’ Robert Zadworny. Picture: Ivan Dugangzic Shannon headed home for the equaliser. The Warriors were forced into two quick subs with minutes left
when Zadworny and Paleka left the field carrying soft-tissue injuries. Replacements Nathan Cook and Nicholas Jurcic were unable to help turn the tide. Georgies won with another long ball that allowed Delfin Mosibe to head in his side’s fourth goal. The Warriors harassed Georgies in a desperate four minutes of extra time but was unable to claw out a last-minute reprieve. The Warriors host high-flying Avondale Heights at Elcho Park this Saturday. Avondale has surprised with its free scoring, which will trouble North Geelong’s leaky defence.
Tuna to trout caught LOCAL anglers had success on everything from tuna to trout over the past week. Justin Rayner ventured down the Surf Coast in search of Australian salmon on the weekend, hooking up a 3kg fish after casting 25g Sluk lure for a couple of hours. He spent 15 minutes fighting the fish before landing it on the rocks and also took plenty of smaller salmon and ‘couta as well. Other anglers capitalised on settling weather to hit the waters off Portland in search of southern bluefin tuna. Dylan Pace was successful, finding fish averaging 12kg while working Rapala X Rap 30s in 50m of water. Dylan said dolphin fish attempted to take a trolled skirted lure but failed to hook up. Closer to home, pinkie snapper were caught on threeinch Gulp pumpkinseed minnows around Geelong’s waterfront. A lucky few caught fish nudging 3kg, which gave an excellent account of themselves on light tackle. Sam Pitman caught reasonable-sized squid on the shallow weed beds at Clifton Springs. Size 2.5 jigs worked the best, with mid-morning the peak time. Pat Rollinson fished in 30m off Barwon Heads on Saturday morning when he lost one bait before a rod screamed off. After 40 minutes he boated a 42kg mako shark, which took a fresh ‘couta bait. The Barwon River estuary remained consistent for schoolsized mulloway on small baitfish-profile lures and fresh squid strips. Silver trevally were also present in good numbers throughout the estuary. Freshwater remained productive, particularly the crater lakes.

Fishing World staff member Michael Moore took his daughters for an early run to Lake Bullen Merri on Sunday, arriving to find almost glasslike conditions on the lake. They found the trolling a little slow but then dropped down some lightly weighted salted bluebait fillets and Powerbait, soon catching Chinook salmon from 1.3kg to 1.5kg. Other anglers reported similar results at the lake during the week, again bluebait and Powerbait. Next door at Lake Purrumbete, Shane Hutchins also fished on Sunday, boating a brown trout of 2.7kg on a trolled clown-pattern Tassie Devil. Azi Osmic fished Wurdee Boluc Reservoir where he caught a 1.2kg redfin on a pink and blue Tassie Devil. Lake Wurdi Bullock is a great choice for a local freshwater fix and has a reputation for producing large Redfin, just make sure to work your lure close to the bottom. Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree produced trout on mudeyes suspended under floats. Lure anglers were successful casing small baitfish-profile lures among the rowing lanes where they caught rainbow and brown trout snapping up there lures.
