Red carpet for Melissa THE annual Hume Ladies Luncheon welcomed popular media personality Melissa Doyle to Albury last week, raising over $10,000 for local women’s refuge Betty’s Place. TURN TO PAGE 5 FOR MORE.
Our hero road By KRYSTEN MANUEL IF YOU’VE driven down Borella Road lately, you may have seen the beginnings of a significant project outside Peards Nursery. By the end of August, these foundations will hold a memorial to Albury’s only Victoria Cross recipient, Lieutenant (later Captain) Albert Chalmers Borella. A rare project of its kind to be funded 100 per cent privately, the memorial is set to cost well over $150,000. But the mover and shaker behind it, Peards Nursery owner George Benyon, says it’s worth every cent. “We all expect the council and governments to do everything,” he said. “Private enterprise has got to get on and build these sorts of things themselves. “If you ask 99.9 per cent of people why Borella Road is called Borella Road, they wouldn’t have known. “To everyone in Australia, Captain Borella is only one of the 100 VC recipients, but I think it’s significant that Borella Road is named after him. “My wife and my two boys are involved in it too - it’s a family thing from the Benyons. It’s my gift back to Albury for what I’ve taken out, it’s my thankyou.” Lt Borella was born on 7 August 1881 and died 6 February 1968 in Albury. On 17-18 July 1918 he led a platoon in an attack to straighten the front line beyond Villers-Bretonneux, from which a major British offensive was to be launched a few weeks later. While ahead of his troops, he single-handedly captured a machine-gun. Then, after clearing a trench and dug-outs, he inspired his men to hold out during heavy enemy counterattacks. Lt Borella had already received the Military Medal and been mentioned in despatches. He also served in World War II and afterwards settled in Albury. “I think it’s important to Albury and the Borella family that we recognise Albury’s only VC recipient,” Mr Benyon said. Education partnership
How is your pool going? Is it the the oasis that you paid top dollar for? Or is it a green monster taking up room in your backyard?
Riverina Institute director Kerry Penton at the Albury campus on Friday. “The Pathways Program is part of Deakin’s commitment to make quality tertiary education more accessible for all students in their own communities, including school-leavers, those who are returning to study and
those who are currently working and want to further their study,” she said. “It is our aim to provide seamless pathways from school through TAFE and on to university, and this program will help build the jobs of the future in the Riverina-Murray region.”
Our hero road marks a soldier’s service
Deakin University vice-chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander and Riverina Institute director Kerry Penton are excited about opportunities for Riverina students.
From page 1 “When we put all the memorabilia in the cafe and saw the amount of people that read it each week, we thought ‘why don’t we do something more?’ “So I decided to build this statue and commission someone to build it with the permission of the Borella family. “We were just going to have the statue and when we looked at it all we thought ‘why don’t we change our front garden bed around and put the honour board up for all the Australian VCs?’ “There’s 100 of them. The statue and the flag are going to be lit 24 hours a day. “Coming into Albury it’s going to give standing to the whole city and I think it’s go-
ing to become one of our major tourist attractions.” Cr Graham Docksey has enthusiastically taken the role of military adviser. “Graham has done a marvellous job, he’s actually like the umpire - he’s between the Borellas and me so we get it right,” Mr Benyon said. The project began 15 months ago and was designed with the shape of a rifle and bayonet in mind, hence the sloping horizontal panels, with a bronze bayonet to be placed on the very end. Currently, the bronze statue is complete, as are the foundations, with landscaping next on the agenda. “I used a couple of local builders and all local tradesmen

with it,” Mr Benyon said. “I’ve done as much as I can for the city - all the money’s coming back into our town, except for the statue and bronze elements. “I had a young fella in Melbourne commissioned, he’s only 28. It took him from March to Christmas to put it to bed and it looks a million dollars.” After 30 years in business on Borella Road, Mr Benyon admits there have been some negative opinions, but maintains the tribute is not a marketing ploy. “We just hope at the end of the day it’s successful,” he said. “It’s not all about George Benyon and Peards Albury, it’s about Captain Borella.”

THOUSANDS of RiverinaMurray students now have greater access to quality higher education thanks to a unique partnership between Deakin University and TAFE NSW Riverina Institute. Designed to help build the skills, qualifications and employability of students living in the region, the Deakin-Riverina Pathways Program will make obtaining a tertiary qualification even more affordable and accessible. In a first for Deakin, students who complete a nominated Diploma with TAFE NSW Riverina Institute are guaranteed entry into corresponding Deakin University degrees. The Deakin-Riverina Pathways Program will initially cover electrical engineering and business study areas, with civil engineering, mechanical engineering and early childhood education to follow shortly thereafter. Plans are underway to include a broader range of Riverina Institute Diplomas to Deakin Degree pathways. Tale of two budgets BY NOW, we all know what the budget means for us as individuals and families. But what does it mean for AlburyCity and their plans? Well, according to AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack, the Federal Budget brings both good and bad news, but AlburyCity remains positive and determined. “It’s swings and merrygo-rounds I think,” he said. “We’ve lost something, but we’ve picked up something else. We’ll work out ways of being able to make sound decisions and economic decisions based on what’s available. “It’s a bit disappointing that they have capped the financial assistance grants for the next four years without CPI increases because to us the money they give us this year moving into the next three years, which is a regu-
lar grant, we expect CPI Increases to be in alignment with increases in services they provide. “Over that four-year period it’s going to cost us nearly $1.2 million because we’re not getting that CPI increase and invariably that will affect services or infrastructure we provide.” AlburyCity is pleased funding to the National Stronger Regions Fund will continue. “It’s a way of finding money in other avenues from other funding streams that we can then use to fund our projects,” Cr Mack said. The Roads to Recovery and Building Bridges pathways have also been retained despite original concerns they may not, and the government has continued its pledge to the Cardiac Laboratory and Cancer Centre. But the CPI increase has been a substantial spanner in the works.
AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack says the Federal Budget offers both good and bad outcomes for the city. “Maybe we can access funding through other streams and use that funding to offset what we’ve
lost,” Cr Mack said. “At the moment it is disappointing and I think regionally it’s going to cost
councils across Australia a significant amount of money. “It’s part of the government being more fiscally responsible and doing more with less. We can’t argue that point because we’re trying to do the same thing. “There are things on the table we want to progress in the next two to three years - Noreuil foreshore is pretty important to us, the whole river precinct is very important to us. “Quite often you find buckets of money become available for specific things and in the past that’s what we’ve had to do - you won’t get money specifically for this whole project, but you get money for elements of that project, so you look for opportunities and access that money where it is. “We’re all going to have to do more with less.”

Hard road ahead on family sporting fees Wednesday Evenings at 6.30pm
CONTROVERSIAL changes to fees for junior basketball and netball are set to be discussed at next week’s AlburyCity council meeting. Albury Council’s community and cultural committee backs plans for a seasonal court hire charge which will save both parents and the stadium. But Albury Indoor Netball Association president Trish Cerminara said the strain of coming up with a lump sum or instalments could hit parents and players hard. “To say I’m a bit peeved is a big understatement,” she said. “This goes back to our spectator fee which we had abolished because it’s not right that parents should have to pay to come in and watch little children play sport. “A few years down the track, stadiums don’t feel, or councils don’t feel that they’re making the money they need to make and when we have forfeits they don’t get their money.” Lauren Jackson Sports Centre Management Committee member Michael Stanton said junior basketball and junior netball participants currently paid individually for each game. “What council has agreed to is a court hire system for the associations but how they collect their money and what system they use is up to them,” he said. “They’re looking at different op-
tions of how they do that and one of those is upfront fees for participants for the season, which gives them the opportunity to make some more money for the association and propose savings for the participants throughout the season. “Based on a 17-week season with two weeks of finals for junior basketball, if they’re paying every week one player can save $34.90 per season. “For netball they’re still working out how they’re charging their participants but there’s certainly some savings there as well.” AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack said the fee structure change was in the hands of user groups, and significant savings should outweigh the initial cost. “My understanding is that user groups were consulted and they agreed it was viable as this arrangement would be a cost saving to families,” he said. “The user groups are now responsible for collection of all fees and if needed will negotiate with families with a demonstrated financial need, to pay fees by instalments. “I am sure the user groups will resolve this particular issue and we (councillors) hope families are not further disadvantaged. A cost saving of almost $40 per season, per participant will be afforded all families which is a great outcome in these tough times.”
the x-ray group
Will families be disadvantaged by the proposed new fee changes at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre? Mr Stanton said among the benefits of the change, parents and participants would not have to line up in queues any more. “We can also improve our kiosk operations by reducing the amount of transactions we make every game time and focus more on our kiosk operations. “Additional income the associations can obtain can really help them further support, promote and develop their sport as well.” But Ms Cerminara believes the proposed change will affect families with several children, or those from a lower socio-economic background to the point where some may have to give up the sport. “The other issue is we have a lot
of families from lower socio-economic backgrounds with multiple children,” she said. “How they’re going to come up at the beginning of every season, for example say it’s $90 for the term, you times that by four (children) that’s $360 upfront. “To say we can pay instalments, well that’s OK but we have instalments for our cars and everything, so my view is, what will take priority? When that happens children don’t play sport. It’s cheaper to sit at home and watch a movie. “Next year, on top of their $90, they’ll have to pay $70 upfront as well for their insurance. So how are families going to do that with two or three kids?

ALBURYCITY mayor Kevin Mack has urged community groups to take a leaf out of the East Albury Tennis Club’s book when it comes to applying for funding. The club has raised $145,000 towards the $385,000 upgrade, with a tender that came in at $20,000 under budget, which Cr Mack said demonstrated both community support and passion. “I think it’s really important that community groups understand that if they wonder why certain groups are attracting funding to provide significant facilities or improvements to their facilities, it’s because they are working hard to fund-raise and work with us to create opportunities for funding so they can then take their particular organisation into the next century,” he said. “People like East Albury Tennis Club - that group down there worked tirelessly for 100 years developing a club from a dirt court to what it is today. “They have demonstrated through their sustainable funding model and their community
support that we should support them.” Council endorsed Wodongabased Connelly Construction Services to complete the project, which gets underway this week. The existing clubhouse will be demolished and extended to encompass a 230 square metre facility, 130 square metres of sheltered area and a further 100 square metres of associated facilities including kitchen, toilets, shower, meeting room and storage. Cr Mack said the upgrade would be an important boost for one of Albury’s leading sporting clubs. “This is a really important investment in a club that is growing,” he said. “(Some) 48 teams compete in night tennis, six teams compete in Saturday pennant, social competition takes place three mornings a week and more than 100 children receive coaching.” “It’s important that local facilities are equipped to match growing demand. Grassroots sports is a huge part of our community and their continued success requires investment in the facilities and infrastructure local clubs need to thrive.”
“Connelly’s tender came in at $20,000 under budget, which made them an obvious choice from a very strong field of contenders.” Cr Mack encouraged community groups to show sustainability, determination and community support when asking the council for assistance. “We just can’t hand ratepayers’ money out willy-nilly,” he said. “We need to have an assurance that they have worked hard to get where they are and that they have a capacity to repay a no-interest loan and to continue what they’re doing in the future. “There’s no point in having the facilities if no-one’s using them. If people think they can just walk into council and say ’I want $100,000 to put new lighting in at such and such,’ well show us the money first. Show us what you’re going to do for us and the ratepayers so we can then make an informed decision based on what you give us. “It’s about demonstrating a sustainable business plan that will give us confidence that they will continue now and into the future.”

Mel helps Betty’s Place By KRYSTEN MANUEL IN ITS fourth year, the annual Hume Ladies Luncheon raised over $10,000 for local women’s refuge Betty’s Place last Friday. The luncheon was a sell-out, with 150 people and businesses attending the event to make a stand against domestic violence on the border. Popular media personality Melissa Doyle joined Hume in an effort to raise awareness and much-needed funds for victims, saying the real strength behind helping vulnerable women is in women supporting one another. “I am such a believer in women supporting each other,” she said. “My husband is wonderful but can’t fulfil every role I need him to. Sometimes I need my girlfriends to rock up with a bottle of wine and a barbecue chook and listen to me whinge, or be there for a laugh or support. “The female network we create around us is so vital. “I think that support needs to extend to the good and the bad. We can’t just be there for the fun times. “There are women who clearly need our help, they’re going through really tough times. Thank God I never have had any experience of domestic violence and I hope to God I never do, but there are women who do and there’s no point in denying it or pushing it under the carpet. “The more they know that what they’re going through is not taboo, the more they know we support them and have empathy and understanding the better. “It’s a lot like mental illness - for a long time no-one wanted to talk about some of these issues and that’s nothing to be gained.” Ms Doyle says everyone can do
something to help when it comes to domestic violence. “I think we all have a role we can play,” she said. “Some people are really wealthy and can build a Betty’s Place, some people can change legislation and some people can offer counselling. I can stand up on stage in a pair of heels and hopefully talk about it, put it in the public domain and raise some funds. So if we can raise some money today and that’s going to help these women then I feel I’ve done my job.” In her visit to Albury, Ms Doyle had a tour of Betty’s Place, labelling the experience and the work Betty’s Place did as extraordinary. “The staff we met and to hear the stories of some of the women, the word I took away was brave,” she said. “I just think how brave they must be to make that decision and finally take that step of taking their kids and leaving and going somewhere to seek refuge.” The chairman of Betty’s Place Colin Alcock and others also shared their stories on domestic violence and the importance of providing community support. Hume general manager customer service, sales and marketing Melissa Sweetland said the response to the luncheon, which grew every year, had been fantastic. “We have been overwhelmed with the response we have received from local businesses and the community,” she said. “Domestic violence is often an unspoken crime and a growing issue that affects so many families. Today’s efforts are just one example of how people can help support local victims.” People wanting to support Betty’s Place can donate by contacting Betty’s Place on 02 6041 4141 to arrange donations, food and essential items. Budget with little heart By KRYSTEN MANUEL UNITINGCARE Wodonga has released a statement following the Federal Budget announcement, accusing the government of being short-sighted or careless when it comes to those struggling financially. “The 2014/15 budget is a budget for an economy, not a society,” it said. “UnitingCare Wodonga is the key emergency relief provider for the City of Wodonga, and our first concern is for the clients of our agency: the unemployed, the disabled, the pensioners and the single parents.
Never enter floodwater.
“This budget offers them little hope. Worse, it seems to regard these people as little more than unproductive units of labour in our national ‘business enterprise’ and partly to blame for our economic problems. “They are not; they are our fellow citizens who make up our diverse community and they deserve to be treated as such and supported to live with dignity. “Despite the talk about sharing the burden there will be a pretty tokenistic levy on high income earners, but only the low income earners and people dependent on pensions and benefits who will experience any hardship as a result of this budget. “These are the people who already struggle to maintain a decent quality of life, and who have little capacity to save and build a buffer against unexpected misfortune.” Last year UnitingCare Wodonga provided some form of emergency financial assistance - mostly in the form of food - to one household in every 12 in Wodonga. “The groups our agency support aren’t a small minority of wasteful derelicts and dole bludgers; they are ordinary men, women and families,” the statement read. UnitingCare Wodonga rejected the change to Newstart, which denies under thirties the ability to use the service unless they’ve been unemployed for six months. “That is no way to encourage people to get a job when unemployment is already approaching six per cent and is much higher for younger people,” the statement read. “These punitive approaches to getting young people into work are likely to entrench intergenerational poverty unless there are genuine efforts to create employment opportunities for young people and people with lower education and skill levels. “The pressure on older workers to stay at work for longer could make it even harder for young people to enter the workforce.”

Social Seen Albury gives paws for thought By KRYSTEN MANUEL, THE annual Albury Million Paws Walk on Sunday was another success, with fine weather and a substantial crowd of families and their fourlegged friends. The event is the largest and most anticipated event on RSPCA Albury’s canine calendar, with the actual walk following the scenic Murray River with plenty of shade along the way. Fun activities in and out of the arena, merchandise and information stalls, prizes, raffles, a free vet check, pet show and the opportunity to talk to professional dog trainers was all on offer A total of 100 per cent of last weekend’s funds raised will stay in the local community to assist RSPCA Volunteer Branches and regional shelters to help more animals.

C ompletely Gorgeous Hair, Nail and Beauty Centre! THE girls at Completely Gorgeous Hair, Nail & Beauty Centre are proud to have reached their one year milestone, as are their valued newfound clientele. “The degree of positive responses we’ve received from our customers has been truly humbling,” salon owner Deb Bender said. “No one is more proud of the excellent service and professionalism the girls deliver than I am. They’ve all really stepped up to the mark to deliver the quality of experience I envisaged from the outset. “Our mission is to provide a caring and thoughtful experience for each and every person who enters our door – a place where their needs are listened to and then realised with quality services. “The aim is also to have this delivered in a lovely environment with convenient access. When customers walk through the door and say ‘wow, I didn’t know how nice this would be’, it’s a very satisfying feeling. “I can’t believe how quickly the first year has flown by and am very grateful for the great support Albury has shown us. It’s always very daunting and a big risk starting a new business but it’s been a satisfying experience and we’re all looking forward to continuing to grow well into the future. “When we started out I knew we’d have to rise to the challenge as the Peards Complex in Borella Road has a great reputation.” Deb sees that being located outside the Albury CBD offers salon customers easy access to a quality environment where they don’t have to factor in the hassles of limited parking or busy traffic and congestion.
Added to this is the bonus of being next to Café Borella, Instyle & Peards Garden Centre, with Homebase across the road, giving customers the opportunity to turn the whole experience into a pleasant outing. The luxury of being able to access all hair and beauty services in the one spot has also proven to be a winner. Completely Gorgeous currently have two senior hairdressers, Tara-Lee Saunders and Deb Beavan, who between them possess a wealth of creativity and professional experience. Tara-Lee, originally from Wagga, was handpicked and brought to Albury by Deb Bender (who has been in the hairdressing industry for over 30 years), for her creative colouring, styling and quality training. “She’s our little Ruby Rose dynamo, with a heart of gold and heaps of flair,” Deb said. Deb Beavan has owned and operated her own successful hairdressing business in Tumut before relocating to Albury. Deb specialises in all aspects of hairdressing, especially colour and up-styling. The willingness of her Tumut clientele to travel to Albury is testament to her skill. Beauty therapist Sarah Williams has won many customers hearts since the salon opened with her caring and thorough approach to beauty treatments, massage and nails. The management of the business is beautifully executed by the bubbly Christina Thomas. Looking toward the future, Deb hopes to attract more hairdressing and beauty industry professionals to rent space within Completely Gorgeous, so they and their customers can enjoy the beautiful environment on offer.

Given seal of approval “SEAL it and they will come,” was the local mantra of many in the Mitta Valley, in reference to sealing the last unsealed sections of the Omeo Highway. Bill Tilley MLA, Member for Benambra today recognised the culmination of an election commitment to seal the final two unsealed sections of the Omeo Highway, between Mitta Mitta and Glen Valley. “The Victorian Coalition Government recognised the importance of this road connection to local tourism, primary production and the logging industry and made a commitment to improve this key link between North Eastern Victoria and Gippsland. “In total, $14.9 million has been invested in this project over the last two years - which has seen the last 28 kilometres, of the first gazetted Victorian highway, sealed. “The sealed road surface will not only improve safety and accessibility in all weather conditions, it will also minimise the problems generally associated with unsealed roads like dust, potholes and ripples in the road surface.” In addition to sealing the highway, hazardous trees and vegetation have been removed or cut back to improve visibility

Culverts and drains have been repaired and extended and some narrow sections of roadway have been widened to achieve minimum road widths, allowing for larger vehicles to turn more easily. “This upgrade will also benefit the environment as it reduces dust and sediment runoff into the creeks and rivers, improving the habitat for the local flora and fauna,” Mr Tilley said. “Prior to the highway being sealed, motorists and riders were at greater risk and tourism in the area was being hampered by rental companies ruling out travel on unsealed roads,” he said. “Now the Omeo Highway, and this beautiful part of the
state, is accessible to all road users. “This is a win-win for the local community, visitors and industry - not only is the Omeo Highway now safer but it has improved north and south connectivity for locals and tourists alike. “I am sure that the families and individuals who travelled through the area over the recent Easter break will have definitely noticed the improvements along the Omeo Highway. “It is an imperative that we continue to build better, safer and more efficient road links across Victoria for the benefit of all road users. “I am proud to have been able to see this project through to fruition.”

Cafe Amore Submarine about to be bombed IT’S never been hard to find Holbrook’s Submarine Cafe, but it’s going to be even easier to spot soon thanks to a project by Murray Arts. The cafe is idyllically set in the “Germantown Park” adjacent to the famous Holbrook Submarine. The decommissioned HMAS Otway has long been a spectacular, trafficstopping inland submarine and fitting memorial to the brave servicepeople who serve and have served in submarines in both war and peace. However the 92-metre HMAS Otway is about to be bombed - but don’t worry, it’s all in the name of art! The sub is about to be yarn-bombed and if you are going to cover a sub in wool products there is only one colour you could think of using - yellow. Murray Arts, who together with Greater Hume Shire Council and the Holbrook Sheep and Wool Fair are steering this project, is currently bursting at the seams with yellow knitting, crocheting and weaving, in all shapes and sizes, but they still need more yellow squares, arm-knitted blankets and scarves to help them realise the crazy dream of creating Australia’s largest yarn bombing installation in Holbrook. So as well as beautiful food and great service, the cafe is set to have a great view of the new Holbrook Yellow Submarine. The latest turn in events is all part of the wonderful tapestry of life (good and
bad) Submarine Cafe owners Warren and Helen Thompson have experienced at the cafe. Just as they had built a unique reputation for quality food and service on the Hume Highway, their cafe was destroyed by fire in May 2003. The loss was not only felt by locals, but also by the multiple tourists and bus companies. But the Submarine Cafe was rebuilt and has bounced back to life. Being situated midway between Melbourne and Sydney is ideal; the unique new modern building with seating for over 100 people offers exceptional quality food and service. Whether you seek the quality indoor dining area, covered deck or under the sail, there is the comfort for all your needs. Being adjacent to the colourful Otway Submarine, with ample coach parking, it is the ideal spot for coaches to ensure their customers are given the best while having a rest. With quality coffee, gourmet fresh foods, an extensive range of delicious cakes, homemade biscuits, alfresco dining on the deck and clean customer amenities - the Submarine Cafe, Lot 2 Raymond St Holbrook, is the ideal place for hungry travellers and locals alike. I’m having a baby Kerri-Ann is aiming to demystify birth process By KRYSTEN MANUEL WHEN you’re pregnant, sometimes one of the scariest or most uncertain elements of having a baby can be the birth itself - especially if it’s your first child. Midwife and childbirth educator Kerri-Ann Baxter knows all too well what this can be like. With three children of her own, Kerri-Ann admits she decided to specialise her career path after finding herself in a situation where she did not have the birth she had hoped with her first child. “My first birth, which wasn’t ideal, led me into childbirth education,” she said. “I’m a midwife but I really wasn’t very prepared for that birth. I also didn’t prepare my partner well. I assumed because he was a really great guy that he would be a great support person. He wasn’t as good as he could have been, simply because he didn’t know what to do. “It went pear-shaped and I didn’t have the birth that I wanted, so after that I thought ‘one - I’m going to have the birth that I want next time and two - I

sive medical options are fine but what we realise is that couples who use techniques like massage, breathing, heat-packs and water often get further without medical pain relief. They often look back and feel really empowered and proud of themselves. “We also talk about breast feeding, positions for labour and birth - it’s a really interactive class.” A survey of nearly 3,800 couples who attended Calmbirth pre-natal Education Programs around Australia has revealed that nearly half required no analgesia, compared with the average of one in 10. Furthermore, while more than half of respondents had felt anxious, frightened or very frightened before attending a Calmbirth course, this had dropped to 2.6 per cent afterwards. need to teach the importance of preparation to couples. “People prepare for the major events in life like weddings. When you have a baby, you are going to remember it for the rest of your life, you need to prepare for it.” A midwife for 15 years and childbirth educator for 10, Kerri-Ann started her own business in 2007 which offers Active Birth classes (one day), Calmbirth workshops (two days) and private consultations. “Calmbirth teaches couples about the process of birth, relaxation and breathing techniques, as well as giving couples an understanding of how they can tap into their inner resources to improve their birthing experience,” Kerri-Ann said. “It has the potential to decrease pain dramatically”, but it’s also a life skill - a great thing for after the birth. “Active Birth classes cover the process of labour, the support person’s role as well as tools and strategies to help them through their labour. “Some of those more inten-

Help at hand for baby blues PREGNANCY and the arrival of a new baby is usually a happy event but for many expectant and new mothers it can be a time of great stress, sadness and confusion. While it’s normal to experience some difficulties adjusting to pregnancy and motherhood, negative feelings that last for more than two weeks and impact on your ability to function indicate it’s time to get help. One in seven new mums and one in 20 new dads are now diagnosed with perinatal depression and anxiety (during pregnancy and after birth) in Australia each year. And many more suffer silently without seeking a diagnosis or support. These illnesses have a devastating impact on the well-being of new parents and their children and can affect nearly every area of a mum or dad’s life including relationships, their ability to work and care for themselves, their baby and others. However, help is readily available and early intervention and the right support leads to a faster recovery. “Perinatal depression and anxiety are serious illnesses that won’t ‘go away’ by themselves,” Post and Antenatal Depression Association (PANDA) CEO Belinda Horton said. “Expectant and new mums need understanding, support and treatment to recover. “Often mums feel guilt and shame when they are not coping with what is generally viewed as a happy time. This, along with media images that reinforce unrealistic expectations of motherhood, can make it harder for new parents to ask for help. So it’s critical that everyone, including friends, family and colleagues understand the signs to look out for and where to go for support. “PANDA’s National Perinatal Depression Helpline is available for families wherever they live. Our trained counsellors provide vital confidential support when people need it most and we connect them with other local specialist support services like GPs, psychologists and playgroups for ongoing care.” While many people still think of perinatal depression and anxiety as purely hormonal conditions, there are a wide range of biological, social and psychological factors that contribute to mums and dads developing these illnesses. A different combination is responsible for each person’s unique experience and it’s important that that all of these are addressed for recovery. These can include: financial hardship, social isolation, unmet expectations of motherhood and previous experiences of depression or anxiety. The symptoms of perinatal depression and anxiety also differ for each person. Common symptoms include: crying, changes in appetite, sleep disturbances unrelated to the baby, feeling overwhelmed or out of control, fear of being alone or negative obsessive thoughts. If you are concerned about yourself or someone else, call the PANDA National Perinatal Helpline 1300 726 306, visit www.panda.org.au or see a GP or your Maternal Child Health Nurse. Baby gift plans
Spicing it up a bit By KRYSTEN MANUEL
By KRYSTEN MANUEL WHEN a new baby is born, it’s always customary to bring a gift - but sometimes this can be a bit of a headache. What do they already have? What do they need? What do they want? How can I choose something unique? Find a cure to your baby blues at Simple Indulgence, Birrallee Shopping Centre. With an exceptionally wide range of choice, Simple Indulgence stock plush toys, baby dinnerware, ornaments, photo frames, silverware, albums, clocks, piggy banks, blankets, interactive toys, clothing, christening memorabilia and naming day memorabilia in quality brands like Bunnykins, Toshi, Peppa Pig, In The Night Garden and Giggle And Hoot. “We’ve always had a little bit of baby stock but because we have a lot of clientele that want baby things, we’ve expanded to a lot more,” owner Helen Goldsworthy said. “Christening, frames, pewter moneyboxes - they’re the most popular things, and then lots of newborn baby items like plush toys. Our new brand Toshi is made of organic materials. You can actually buy a premature baby hat and it’s very hard to buy a small baby hat - it’s a 3X. “The cuddly blankets with the teddy face on them just walk out the door. They’re great quality and so nice to touch. “Last summer we went into a great

WICKED Curves in Lavington is proud to provide for plus-size women, with everything from bras to maternity wear. Having opened in November of last year, owner Fiona Lieschke wanted to offer creative options for plus-size women through quality brands and reliable service. “If I found it hard to shop somewhere, and I’m not the biggest of women, then it’s obviously harder for the bigger women as well,” she said. “We mainly provide for the bigger people who are really let down by your mainstream areas. My bras are from D cup all the way through to a J cup in most brands. “I stock Penache, which noone else has in this area. My favourite of that brand is a sports bra plus an everyday bra all in one and absolutely fantastic - the design of them is so different to everything else. “Bigger ladies can also find lingerie and things like that here - people with curves need to look good and it’s really hard to cater for.” For maternity stock, Fiona currently needs to order in, though the products are well worth the short wait. “Hot Milk is my main brand for maternity stock, however there
Wicked Curves offers quality lingerie, sleepwear, bras and hosiery for plus size ladies and expectant mothers. are the Penache and the Goddess ranges as well,” she said. “They have maternity bras, nursing bras and crop tops as well as lingerie itself.” With Wicked Curves stocking bras, underwear, corsetry, hosiery, lingerie, sleepwear and costumes, it’s no surprise Fiona will soon offer party plans for hen’s nights and other social occasions that require a little more spice. Decade of Casey marked By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT MAKES us all feel old to think Casey Donovan became the youngest ever winner of Australian Idol 10 years ago. But Casey, a so-called ‘old soul’ herself, has grown in leaps and bounds, fuelling the fire for her new You Believed tour. “The You Believed tour is closing a chapter, marking 10 years in the industry,” she said. “Coming from a 16-year-old girl to now, an almost 26-year-old, and the hurdles I’ve had to jump over and how I picked myself back up again - it’s been an amazing journey, to say the least.” Casey has been writing poetry since she was 12, and with 10 years in the entertaining business at such a critical age, her writing has flourished. “I’ve been writing music since I was 14,” she said. “The songs back then are all about heartache and love - something a 14-year-old shouldn’t be writing about. “In the last 10 years, (I’ve been) writing with a lot of great artists and great writers and getting more tools under my belt to be able to pick up a guitar or start jamming out on the keyboard and making music. “The one thing I love about writing music is that you are the key to your creation. I put a lot of things down and sang a lot of pain out of my soul.”
For an intimate ‘catch-up’ on the last 10 years of Casey Donovan, don’t miss her performance this Friday. Casey is currently known as one of Australia’s most versatile Indigenous entertainers. She makes her mark not only as a musician, but on the stage in musical theatre and as a television presenter, MC, and author.
Casey is a multi-award winner and nominee, including an ARIA number one award for Listen with Your Heart and Deadly Awards for Best Album, Best Single and Most Promising New Talent. After taking a break from music,
she returned to the arena with the release of her hotly anticipated single Big, Beautiful and Sexy. As a result of this inspirational song, she not only garnered new fans Australia-wide, but also became a
poster girl for fuller-figured women. Casey took her Big, Beautiful and Sexy ethos further by touring in her own show, which has seen the remarkable singer perform to sell-out crowds at some of the country’s most coveted venues and participate in events such as Adelaide Festival, Brisbane Festival, The Rocks Festival of the Voice, Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute’s Spirit Festival, Darwin Festival and Yabun Festival. She has also headlined her own Mama Cass Tribute concerts and supported the legendary Cyndi Lauper on her Australian National Tour. In 2014 Casey captivated readers with her autobiography Big, Beautiful and Sexy. 2014 has also seen Casey make the move into the plus-size fashion market. Casey was the ambassador and MC for Curve Couture Roadshow as part of Melbourne Fashion Week; and will perform at Pulp Fashion Week in Paris. So what’s in store for the next 10 years for Casey? “A lot of music, I hope,” she said. “I’d love to see more of the world. My dream is to go to New York and have no-one know who the hell I am and go to an open-mic night and just belt out a tune and see what happens!” Casey will perform at the Albury Entertainment Centre on Friday 23 May. Inquiries: 02 6043 5610.

In the mood for Glenn Miller THE Glenn Miller Orchestra is a concert spectacular that promises Australian audiences a sentimental journey down memory lane on the eve of the Glenn Miller Orchestra’s 77th anniversary. Featuring the world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra, The Moonlight Serenade Singers and The Broadway Swing Dancers presenting great big band hits, the original Glenn Miller arrangements, the music of The Andrews Sisters, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and the romantic World War II melodies made famous by Vera Lynn - music which captivated millions of people worldwide - are all brought together on stage in a nostalgic concert spectacular. An added feature will be the music from the library of The Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band, performed by the orchestra including the original arrangement of The St Louis Blues March. The Glenn Miller musical arrangements are unique; even after 77 years, they are still heard worldwide; timeless icons of American culture such as Chattanooga Choo-Choo, In the Mood, Tuxedo Junction, A String of Pearls, Moonlight Serenade, Little Brown Jug and Pennsylvania 6- 5000 ... hits which captivated millions of people. “The Glenn Miller Orchestra is a colourful and flamboyant evening filled with fun and nostalgia of the ’30s and ’40s,” musical director Rick Gerber said. “Our unique jazz sound is sought all around the world and in addition to re-creating the golden era of swing, we bring to life the colour, costumes and spirit. Having travelled across the globe, The Glenn Miller Orchestra is

The family had many records of the big bands of which those of Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller were favourites. He formed his first band while in
high school which played published “stock” arrangements which led to an interest in the art of music arranging. The interest in music continued through college and service in the army where he played in an army dance band and further studied available method books about arranging. In early 1981 he joined the Jack Gillespie big band from Minneapolis for a short tour featuring big band stars
Helen O’Connell, Johnny Desmond and Tex Beneke. Johnny Desmond was the featured vocalist with Glenn Miller’s Army Air Force Orchestra and Tex Beneke was widely known as the biggest star of Miller’s pre-war civilian orchestra who was featured on scores of hit records for his tenor sax solos and novelty vocals such as “Kalamazoo”, “Chattanooga Choo Choo”, “Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree” and
many, many more. In 1987 Rick formed his own big band in the Los Angeles area which played many prestigious events and private parties over a wide area of Southern California. In May 2001 he entered into a licence agreement with Glenn Miller Productions, Inc. to form a special unit Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Godzilla’s a monster of a movie MOVIE: Godzilla (M) STARRING: Aaron TaylorJohnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston THERE’s no other word for it: the new-look Godzilla is fat. Just don’t tell him I said so, because he’s got a temper. Godzilla raged through the nation’s box offices on the weekend, devouring a ton of cash ... and, judging by his frame, several jumbo-sized tubs of popcorn and some barrels of Coke. The new Godzilla is much better than the previous remake, which featured Matthew Broderick and the gay
guy from Melrose Place (ask your parents, kids). The subtleties of Godzilla had previously been lost on me. I had not realised, for example, that he was on humanity’s side, fighting other monsters in our defence. Sure, a few cities got wasted along the way, but the people were entertained. In this reboot, everyman Bryan Cranston plays the American nuclear engineer confronted by the MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms) who - spoiler alert - kill his wife and wreck half of Japan. Two of the MUTOs make
a beeline for their own city of love, San Francisco, in an attempt to spawn. This could get messy. Cue all the boy toys - ships, trains, nukes, and all the usual destruction. Meanwhile, Godzilla lumbers his lard-arse around like a cross between fat Elvis and a paunchy, punch-drunk prizefighter, knocking ’em out with his prodigious gut. There can be little doubt that Godzilla delivers exactly as promised. The jury is still out on whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing for our society. - Jason Beck

WITH GEOFF HABERECHT OF TRU HIFI
Time for a trade 3RD BIRTHDAY SALE! OVER the years I have traded many great pieces of audio equipment. At times the old look does not suit the new home, or it is simply time to have the latest model. Similar to motor cars, do I buy a new basic car or a preowned top model? I have encouraged quality trade-ins to satisfy my “man cave” customers and the bargain hunting audiophile enthusiasts. It is the sound that matters, not the style that matters to these clients. Quality amplifiers and speakers are often 25-year products and most of the products we see are generally around the 10-year mark so there is plenty of life left in them. The buying risks can be higher with used items, and failing to audition the items certainly increases your risk. I have found over 90 per cent of the products living up to or exceeding expectations. What provides the value in the secondhand products? The first secret is the units that hold the value are the simplest, nofuss units that have been built to a standard and not to a price or with fashionable gadgetry. For example we rarely trade a five-year-old sub-$1000 theatre

Speakers have a similar issue, we gladly trade back the genuine quality models even if they are 15 years old. But we very rarely trade the speaker packs nicknamed “theatre in a box models” our most common request even if they are two years old. Products that have a lot of moving parts generally have little value after five years; high-end CD players can be the exception. Units that combine everything in one box rarely

hold value after five years and in many cases five years can be the shelf life of those units. From week to week we do not know whether we have a few or a lot of used models available. Come in, see us and place the request and budget - we have surprised many who have the beer budget and champagne taste appreciation for quality music. On the other side we can offer the customer who wishes to upgrade, the opportunity to trade possibly allowing you to go another step higher than your original expectations.

Homes&Property Albury Wodonga
All this and a view too By KRYSTEN MANUEL
THIS exquisite home boasts innovative, contemporary style, designer finishes and an exclusive view just begging for a glass of wine at sunset. From the street, 25 Warwick Road showcases its modern design beautifully, with sleek lines and muted tones, but functionality is also addressed with its convenient double-entry/exit driveway and extra car space. Through the large double doors and into the foyer you will find classy light boxes lining the walls, leading to the living room. The living room contains a gas imitation log fire (in addition to ducted heating and cooling throughout), movie projector and screen and a taste of the stunning views available through much of the home - utilised to their full potential with floor to ceiling windows. Into the kitchen and the view really comes to life, spanning the entire wall of the kitchen and the adjoined dining area. The kitchen features a large roll-away, quality appliances, dishwasher, convenient pull-out powerpoint and a gloriously large butler’s pantry. From this area you will pass the cavernous under-stair-storage - large enough to store sporting equipment and more. The laundry has external access and security door, and down the hall a separate toilet and separate vanity area sit between bedrooms one, two and the bathroom - no more fights in the morning! Bedroom one is queen size and enjoys yet another stunning view, while bedroom two (also queen size) offers a built-in robe. The main bathroom is extremely roomy, with an oversize corner shower and vanity. The study is double size, sitting next to the
double remote garage with shelving. Up the well-lit stairwell is the queen size bedroom three. Another bathroom is on this level which really steps it up a notch - spacious shower, his and her vanity, luxurious spa bath and vanity. On the way to the master bedroom, you can’t miss the walk-through robe. It is massive. Sex And the City eat your heart out! With two extensive and identical shelving/ hanging areas, no-one can complain about storage space.
The master bedroom is king-size and offers floor to ceiling windows and access to a private balcony to drink in the vistas - a romantic getaway many people pay hundreds, even thousands for when visiting hotels, and here it is in your own home! Outside on the entry level is another balcony - fully decked with all-weather blinds and a view crossing the sizable backyard right out to the sparkling lights of Wodonga. This is not one to miss!

Decoding real estate lingo MOST of us dream of having our own home and for some already on the property ladder work and life changes will most likely involve buying and selling more properties - a bigger home, a smaller home, a home in a different city, for example. But this can be a confusing experience, because for those not involved in the property market day to day some of the information available can seem like a foreign language - even property advertisements and sale boards are filled with abbreviations. Do you know what BIRs, OFPs, OSP, SF and BRs are? If not, ask a friend in the know or the agent advertising the property to help you decipher it. Make a list of abbreviations and their meanings so that next time you encounter them they won’t pose a problem. (If you want to start with those above, they are built-in robes, open fireplaces, offstreet parking, single fronted and bedrooms). Another to watch for in advertisements is STCA. This means subject to council approval - for example, extend or redevelop STCA. This means the local council would have to approve your plans - and you cannot be sure that this will happen, so be wary of buying a property assuming you will be able to do anything that needs council approval. Check with the council first. There are many tools to help in your property search. Following auction results in the newspaper, on the REIV website or by signing up to soldtoday.com.au for auction re-
sults in suburbs where you hope to buy is valuable - this lets you know what properties in the area are selling for. But results also have their own language: PI, SB, VB, PS, SO. That’s passed in (bids not high enough to reach the reserve price), sold before (the owners received a good offer so sold before the auction), vendor bid (a bid made by the agent on behalf of the vendor to get the auction underway). PS means private sale, rather than a sale by auction, and SO is, of course, sold, which is what every vendor hopes for. Another useful tool is median prices. REIV analyses thousands of property sales throughout the state to calculate median prices for towns and cities every three months. A median price is the middle price in a series of sales, where half the sales are of lower value and half are of a higher value. For example, if 15 sales are recorded in a suburb and arranged in order from lowest to highest value, the eighth sale price is the median price. Median prices are used rather than average prices because median prices are less affected by a few unusually high or low prices, making them a more accurate indicator of true market activity. But remember that location and house quality will determine the price of your home. Learning the property jargon takes time, so don’t be embarrassed to ask questions. As an educated buyer you will be more likely to make the right decision.

Boost for Albury’s confidence ONE of Australia’s biggest residential property investors says the Federal Budget will see property prices soar over the next 12 months, but will also restore long-term confidence and certainty in the property sector in Albury. Property Club owner and founder Kevin Young said the Budget had done nothing to address housing supply issues and that would drive up prices by as much as 20 per cent in some areas of Australia. Property Club has 80,000 members Australia-wide and 4,000 members in its exclusive Property Millionaires Club. Mr Young owns 200 residential

properties Australia-wide and is a BRW rich lister. “For areas like Albury the Budget offers certainty and long-term stability for ongoing growth in the property sector,” he said. “But like every area of Australia, Albury has an affordable housing undersupply problem and the Budget has not addressed this.
rate policy and to enforce the banks to pass on cuts in interest rates. “The Reserve Bank has no excuses now,” he said. “The Budget has delivered a plan to reduce debt and the Reserve Bank needs to make clear that any further interest rate rises are off the agenda. “The property sector in Albury is very reliant on having stable employment growth. “The earn or learn policy by the government for our young people combined with the huge spending on infrastructure will see more jobs created which will in turn stimulate the property sector for years to come.”
“The property sector is reliant on job creation, infrastructure spending, low interest rates and economic stability and this Budget ticks all those boxes. “I think you are going to see real employment growth now because at least we have a government that has a long-term plan. Employment growth is the key to the property sector.” Mr Young said the long-term stability for debt reduction offered in the Budget should encourage the Reserve Bank to provide long-term interest rate stability. He said the Reserve Bank had failed miserably to offer stability in interest
Employment growth is the key to the property sector… “I am glad that the Commonwealth resisted the temptation to interfere with negative gearing because the property industry can be at the forefront of leading Australia to new levels of economic growth. “But it is also disappointing that ideas like a two-year moratorium on the GST on new houses to address affordable housing under supply issues were not taken up.

WITH Interleague Representative Football being played right across all leagues, this Saturday there will obviously be no home and away action at a local level. The Tallangatta and District Football Leagues and our Ovens and Murray will both compete in the Worksafe Country Championships in attempt to lower their rankings, while the Hume Football League will head to Tocumwal and compete in the North East competition. While Interleague has been an extremely popular, reputable and pride driven thing of the past, I can’t help but wonder if it holds the same prestige today. Clubs all say they support Interleague and their players desire to be involved should they wish to ... but that is just the thing, do they? In the Hume league it is clear this year that interleague football is not all that appealing either. In a competition that is littered by former Ovens and Murray stars, the Hume Leagues squad is relatively light on for big-name players. Clubs have preferred to predominantly put forward a host of young names, which is by no means a bad thing, but the squad doesn’t truly represent the strength of the league that has produced quite a number of AFL stars. The Tallangatta League has a far stronger squad, with still some fairly obvious talent missing, but the fact that the league is playing for a ranking and right here in Albury could go some way as, to decipher why. The Ovens and Murray will play the Hampden League (down Warrnambool way) to decide who is the fifth best competition in the VCFL. It has enlisted the services of former Carlton great and current Yarrawonga spearhead Brendan Fevola in an attempt to raise its profile and get more big names interested. This has done big things for the coverage the league has already received and the squad complied is equally as impressive. It appears more players than before have supported this year’s contest, whether that has to do with Fev, the publicity the
Nick Molkentlin, Tom Sharp, Matt Pentergast. game has and will receive, or the fact that the game is being played at a local level remains to be seen. Should the Ovens and Murray win this Saturday they will be statistically recognised as the fifth best competition in Country Victoria ... what rubbish! Any league that contains former AFL players of the likes of Fevola, Ackermanis, Polo, Ednie, O’hAilpin, Hyde, Hollands, Koschitzke combined with the amazing talent that is attracted from all over the nation is clearly the best competition around. However because of the importance placed on interleague results in the past, it is not referred to as so. If a league’s standard and reputation is to live and die by its ranking received from its participation, then clearly Interleague to many it is a big deal. The big question is just how big a deal is it to the people that make the game - the spectator. I guess the proof will be in the pudding this weekend, as they say. Will thousands of supporters from differing clubs unite as one and attend the Norm Minns Oval to cheer on their league ... unlikely.
Will football-loving spectators from all over the region attend to watch some of country football’s biggest names ... that’s perhaps far more likely. Or will financially strapped supporters who week in week out give countless hours and cash to their very own teams see this week’s Interleague as a chance to catch up on the chores and spend time with the family and give the whole thing a very wide birth? If interleague is to survive we must truly all be into it clubs, players and the fans ... let’s see this weekend, shall we. The Ovens and Murray are donating all of their gate takings from the Interleague contest to the James McQuillan Future Fund. It is my understanding that the Hampden League will also donate a percentage of their earnings, a truly great gesture as the revenue received form the day barely covers the cost of the interleague itself. The game will be played at the Norm Minns Oval starting at 3pm. It is also broadcast live on 1494 2AY.

Local Sport May the month of golf By KRYSTEN MANUEL MAY will be a busy month for avid golfers at Kensington Gardens. Having had the Kensington Gardens Seniors Classic on 5 and 6 May, golfers can look forward to the Kensington Gardens Challenge on 27 May. “This was the third year we had the Kensington Gardens Seniors Classic, sponsored by Alatalo Bros,” Kensington Gardens regional manager Col Ward said. “That’s open to anyone over 55 and you have to have a handicap. “It’s very well attended, we almost had full fields. It’s just one of those great days. “It’s a two-day event and reasonably serious because there’s over $4,000 in prizes.” Organisers are quite proud of the quality of prizes on offer, spread between some 60 winners. “The beauty of this competition is there are so many winners,” Mr Ward said. “It’s not just one person getting up there all the time. “They have winners for each day, overall winners, closest to the pin, the longest drive ... All the prizes are spread out. “We have prizes such as a weekend’s accom-

modation in Bright, packages from Dahlsens.” Mr Ward said the day was a chance to highlight the growing relationship between the Thurgoona Golf Club and Kensington Gardens. “It’s establishing that relationship between Kensington Gardens and the golf club because our residents have direct access,” he said. “That is something that’s fairly unique and certainly a bonus. “And our residents are all eligible to play in the vets at the golf course - it’s a very good mutual relationship.” On the Monday afternoon of the classic, players were invited to visit Kensington Gardens for refreshments. This year attracted around 100 people. Next on the Kensington Gardens calendar is the Kensington Gardens challenge. “On 27 May is the Kensington Gardens Challenge and it’s a teams event,” Mr Ward said. “They can have as many in a team as they like. So there’s a team from Kensington Gardens, there’s a team from Fairway Gardens, St Johns Green and so on. “They play for a cup which will always be held at Kensington Gardens. That will become a yearly event.”

By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE Wodonga BMX Track was alive with elite state riders as they battled it out on the track for the Border BMX Victoria versus NSW open last Sunday. The day began with an Uncle Tobys breakfast at 8am followed by the first race from 10am. NewsWeekly caught all the action from all age groups across the day, which organisers have praised as another very successful event for the venue.
