AS COLD AS ICE Ice use in the Yarra Ranges is on the rise...
By MELISSA MEEHAN EXPERTS say that what used to be a city drug is infiltrating rural areas at an unprecedented rate. A recent Turning Point report showed the use of ice, also known as crystal methamphetamine, has risen across the state. Local police say they could execute a warrant on clandestine labs every day of the week in the Yarra Ranges, Knox and Maroondah regions.

Not to mention the extra resources needed to deal with the increased drug-related crime. Over the next two weeks the Mail will present a special investigation on the use of the drug, why people use it, as well as the aftermath as we speak to police, paramedics, doctors, nurses, counsellors and families who have all witnessed the devastation caused by the drug - and what help is out there. Clear message on roads By REBECCA BILLS AS WINTER creeps up, drivers are reminded to take extra care on the roads. Poor visibility on the roads over winter due to contributing factors including thick fog, heavy rain, windy conditions and low clouds all play a part in the slippery and sometimes dangerous road conditions. VicRoads Metropolitan South East
Regional Director Adam Maguire said these dangerous conditions, especially prevalent across the hills, means drivers need to be extra vigilant and careful during this season. He said that, regardless of weather conditions, everyone could improve road safety by slowing down and exercising care and patience on the roads. “When driving in winter, especially
in wet, foggy or windy conditions, drivers need to slow down and leave a greater distance between your vehicle and the one that is in front of you,” he said. “Use your headlights and maintain your vehicle by checking tyres, demisters and windscreen wipers.” Lilydale police Leading Senior Constable Graeme Rust said drivers needed to adjust their driving to the conditions.
“If you are driving in foggy or wet conditions you are allowed to use your fog lamps fitted to the vehicle while those conditions prevail,” he said. “If the roads become wet you can bet your bottom dollar there is going to be an increase in collisions. “So the biggest thing is to slow down, make allowances and hang back from the vehicle in front of you.”
Mr Maguire said human factors such as fatigue, speeding and drink driving were contributory factors in many crashes. He said that wet weather and winter conditions should prompt drivers to remember that speed signs refer to the maximum speed allowed. “So drivers should always adapt their speed to suit the conditions,” he said.
How now Picasso cow By REBECCA BILLS BELGRAVE South Primary School students have a new, rather large, addition to their school in the form of a life-size cow called Big Bessie. The school is taking part in Dairy Australia’s myth busting Picasso Cows program which is aimed at helping children to understand that milk does not just come from the supermarket and brown cows don’t make chocolate milk. Program organiser and grade one and two teacher Sarah Sussman said the school was keen to get involved after being contacted by Dairy Australia. “We are doing a whole lot of work across the preps, ones and twos on farms so we will be learning about lots of different farms and we have done a lot of work, specifically on
dairy farms, over the last few weeks,” she said. “We are going on an excursion next week to Chesterfield Farm so the students can make butter and lots of other activities focused on what are dairy foods, where does it come from and, most importantly, why it is good for them.” Ms Sussman said statistics showed that children aren’t having enough dairy in their diets so the program was a valuable asset in helping children understand the benefits of consuming dairy products. Dairy Australia dietician Amber Beaumont said she saw the program as a great opportunity to instil healthy lifestyle habits at an early age. “Most Australian children don’t consume enough dairy foods to meet their daily nutritional requirements,” she said.
“The program helps kids appreciate Australia’s dairy industry and gain an understanding of the health benefits of milk, cheese and yogurt.” Art teacher Christine Bernhardt said although student from prep to grade two were specifically learning about farms, the whole school was involved in designing and painting Big Bessie. Principal Kerryn Baillie said the children have until June to finish Big Bessie and then she will be presented at the region’s grand final presentation day. At the event the region’s schools that have participated in the program will show off their handy work and the winning school will receive $250. The Picasso Cows program is in its sixth year and will see a cow added to the curriculum of 58 schools across Australia.

where the money is going firsthand.” Leading up to the climb, Ms Thomas said she had completed the 1000 Steps a few times a week, one full day hike and three smaller hikes each week. “I am apprehensive about how it will all go, but at the same time I’m excited to see it for what it is on my own account,” she said. Ms Thomas will be spending two months after the climb volunteering in Africa doing HIV counselling and various outreach projects with women and children. Ms Thomas will be visiting Food, Water, Shelter in Tanzania after her climb on 12 July to deliver the funds raised over the duration of her climb. PROJECT Upwey members are blown away by the community’s response to the Upwey Community Conversation and Workshop. Last Monday, more than 140 community residents and members came together, sharing hundreds of ideas facilitated by Peter Kenyon from Bank I.D.E.A.S at Upwey’s Community Hall. Project Upwey leaders and event organisers Michelle Johnson and Andrew Fullagar said it was wonderful to see such community commitment towards achieving a positive future for the town. “It’s so great seeing people come together not in the face of adversity or an issue, but to come together in such a positive way to move forward as a town,” Ms Johnson said. “There was a really strong sense of community and a need for people to connect.” Mr Fullagar said in general there seemed to be a sense that the theme of community was falling away and that volunteering was a dying art, but this meeting exemplified that there was a huge nucleus of people who wanted to be a part of working together for the community. “We could see barriers being broken down and people beginning to really work together,” he said. “We are now busily working together as a community to collate all the information from the night to get the projects going.” Councillor Noel Cliff said he was absolutely blown away from the response from Upwey residents who attended the evening. “I saw an incredible cross-section of the community there,” he said. “This is the best turn up I’ve seen for people taking an interest in their immediate community. “In the past there have been attempts to get the community involved, but it’s never really fired, this one fired.” For those who could not attend the meeting, but still want to connect and stay up-to-date with projects in Upwey, email projectupwey@outlook. com or ‘like’ Project Upwey on Facebook. 1124373-FA12-14
SHE’S only 22, but determined to climb a mountain. And not just any mountain, Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro. Kalorama’s Rhiannon Thomas is embarking on a selffunded journey alone to reach the Uhuru peak on the top of Mount Kilimanjaro - the highest free standing mountain in the world and the tallest in Africa. In a quest taking her seven days, Ms Thomas is raising money for a local Tanzanianrun organisation called Food, Water, Shelter as motivation to reach the peak. The endeavour will see her climb 5985 metres for the cause which assists highly vulnerable women including widows of HIV, victims of gender inequality and violence alongside children and orphans to develop the necessary skills. These skills include knowledge to grow and cultivate their own food and sustainable water recourses, build their own sustainable houses and promote independent income away from the male breadwinner. “Last year I was studying my honours in psychology, and I really just wanted to change it up a bit and do something very new and exciting as well as doing something for a cause,” she said. “I wanted to do something that would challenge myself and as I want to become a psychologist in the future, it’s important to get some sort of experience similar to what other people have gone through. “Although I will be climbing a literal mountain, by the time I get to the top it may be a very similar experience in metaphor-

Tip fees blamed By JODIE SYMONDS
Connecting people and communities RTM
Visitors focus on exciting science By REBECCA BILLS
INCREASED tip fees could be to blame for a Mount Evelyn roadside being used as a dumping ground. Angry resident Katie Barber, who walks along the road weekly, said she was devastated that the area was being used to dump rubbish. She said plastic chairs, scrap wood and household waste had been left at the roadside, causing the area to look dirty. While she said it was no excuse, she said higher council rates and tip fees could be the reason why people felt the need to not use tip facilities available to them. “They’re scum, that’s what they are,” Ms Barber said. “It definitely brings down the area and makes it look disgusting. “We bought here a year ago because of its greenery and how beautiful it is, but this just makes the place look scummy.” Gobsmacked that perpetrators would not need to pay for the clean-up if they weren’t found, Ms Barber said that it was unfair ratepayers had to foot the bill. Tip fees at Coldstream can cost up to $75 for a small wagon. Waste tipping fees are expected to rise a further 10 per cent after the State Government increased the levy to dispose of waste at landfill. “It’s an easy option for them. They don’t have to pay money to have the rubbish disposed of, so they harm our environment,” she said. “I don’t understand why hard rubbish in Mount Evelyn is once a year. “I pay my rates and I’m not a high earner, so why should they get away with this?”
The rubbish dumped at Bailey Road. 120868 Ms Barber said the pile of rubbish was an eyesore and she was worried that tourists travelling from the Upper Yarra along the Warburton Trail would think that Mount Evelyn was a dirty town. “Who knows what they will think of us when they see this,” she said. “It makes me angry because I’m not a dirty person but this sends the wrong message about how we live to people
visiting the area.” Ms Barber said the mess set a bad example to young people at the nearby pony club and it would make them more likely to dump rubbish themselves. Ms Barber informed Yarra Ranges Council of the issue last Monday. The Mail contacted Yarra Ranges Council however it failed to provide a statement before deadline.

As part of the week, students and teachers hosted a special visitors’ afternoon last Monday with grandparents and other relatives invited to share in classroom experiences with interesting science experiments. Science teacher Ben Gallaher said the school celebrates Education Week each year which often has a focus on maths or literacy. “We have a few parents that are scientists so they came up with the idea of having a science themed week,” he said. “We thought of some different activities to be completed in rotations when the special people come and we have had a different activity in each class. “It’s been really great.” Jai’s grandmother Kay Goodall said she loved being able to come to see all the new things the children have learned. “It’s such a different way to learn to how we

AS COLD AS ICE Ice kick to the face ICE STATS Husband By MELISSA MEEHAN
a stranger By MELISSA MEEHAN IT changed a good man, father and husband into a monster. Normally mellow and laidback, the husband of Karen (not her real name) turned into someone she no longer recognised when he started using ice. At first the signs were slight. He became restless and had more energy, but soon she noticed that the bank accounts were empty and he became more frantic. “I didn’t know he was using at the start, but noticed he wasn’t quite himself,” Karen said. “Then I found myself standing at the supermarket checkout, more than once, with the card declining and realised we had no money for food, despite thinking we had up to $500 in the account. “From there it was a downward slope.” When she finally found out about his addiction, the mother of three said she couldn’t believe it. “I didn’t think that kind of stuff was done in the Yarra Ranges, you associate it more with city life,” she said.“But he’d made new friends, and obviously this was something they did together.” She said his behaviour soon became so frantic and aggressive that the kids would hide from him when he came home. “He never hit me, but he became so violent,” she said.“The kids were scared, I was scared - we just didn’t know what he would do next.”
She said he became someone she no longer knew. “I would look into his eyes, and see a completely different person,” she said. “He frightened me, and even more scary, was how quickly it all happened.” Her husband became so suspicious and paranoid that he started carrying a knife. While he never used it to threaten her or the kids, Karen said that was a sign that he was no longer the man she married. “I made the decision to leave him,” she said. “The kids were my priority, and I was scared that he could hurt them in one of his rages. “He had the strength of 10 men and if something happened I wouldn’t be able to stop him.” Now separated, Karen looks back on those hard days with tears in her eyes. “It was a very dark time for me,” she said. “To see someone I loved completely change in front of my eyes and become someone so dangerous really affected me. “Not to mention the kids.” Now, her husband has stopped using the drug, moved out of the area and has rebuilt his relationship with his children. “Yes, there is a relationship now,” she said. “But some things you can’t repair and the kids still remember who he became and how he was. “It’s a tough thing to go through and they are still affected by it.”
A DANGEROUS kick to the head resulted in a local paramedic needing CT scans, after she was brutally attacked by an ice user as she transported him to hospital. The man was coming down from ice, and as paramedics arrived the man was in a relaxed state. They sat him down, and as they spoke to the triage nurse he became aggravated before planting the kick, which could have been fatal. Luckily the paramedic wasn’t fatally injured, but it’s a frightening example of the day to day dangers faced by emergency crews called to events where ice is involved. Acting Team Manager at Ambulance Victoria branches in Emerald and Belgrave, Fida Masri said the above incident, while rare, showed the dangers of the job. “That paramedic was lucky she wasn’t seriously injured in the end,” she said. “But it depicts the violent and aggressive nature of people on ice.” Ms Masri said it was important that people understood that ice was no longer a party drug, and said it was infiltrating the suburbs and country towns at an alarming rate. “Paramedics are reporting an increase and spike in ambulance callouts to people affected by crystal methamphetamine,” she said. “What is hard for us is that we think we’re being called out to a heroin overdose, unaware they’ve also taken ice, we’re already on alert but we treat them and then they wake in a psychotic rage. “It can be a dangerous turn of events, heroin users can be agres-
sive, but ice takes it to a whole new level.” She said with ice, users could often go from zero to 1000 in a matter of minutes, so they took heroin to slow down the effects and come down. “It’s not documented, but anecdotally we’re seeing an increase of polypharmacy drugs,” she said. “It just means that often, we’re not sure what we are dealing with.” Ms Masri said that often users could present as being OK and quite calm, but then have moments of rage. “I’ve been on the scene with five paramedics, six to seven police having to help with one patient,” she said. “They seem to get the strength of 10 men, in a frenzied psychotic episode. “The OC foam doesn’t even affect them.” The medical risks are high, too, with users often at threat of heart attacks or strokes because of increased heart rate and blood pressure. It’s all a world many in the community wouldn’t see or understand. But for those affected by addiction to the violent drug, it’s hell. “I often think about a young kid that overdosed at home one night,” she said. “His mother was beside herself, crying and screaming - she worked herself up so much we needed to take her to hospital for chest pains. “And I thought to myself, why would anyone do this to their families? “But I guess, when they are hooked they don’t care about anything else other than their next hit.”
NATIONAL
■ 6.8 per cent of Australians aged 12 years and older have used meth/amphetamines at some stage in their life. ■ 2 per cent have used meth/ amphetamines in the previous 12 months. VICTORIA ■ In metropolitan Melbourne there was an 88 per cent increase in the number of attendances for crystal methamphetamine between 2011-’12 and 2012-’13, up to an average of three per day. ■ In regional Victoria, the increase was 198 per cent, up to 0.63 per day. ■ Crystal methamphetamine is the fourth most common drug involved in ambulance attendances, following alcohol, benziodiazapines and nonopioid analgesics (such as paracetamol).-Turning Point Trends in Alcohol and Drug Related Ambulance Attendances in Victoria 2012-’13 report ■ The report was produced by Turning Point in conjunction with Ambulance Victoria, and funded by the Victorian Department of Health.
Hospitals see the effects of the drugs By REBECCA BILLS LOCAL hospitals are also copping the brunt of ice-related side-effects. Emergency Department Associate Nurse Unit Manager at the Angliss Hospital, Sue Brown, said there had been a big increase of ice-induced incidents in the area. “What people are taking is not always clean,” she said. “There has been at least twice as many, if not four times as many people coming through the emergency ward over the last few years with ages varying from 18 to 30 in relation to the drug. “It’s a big increase and often they haven’t had a large amount of the drug - that is an effect of it not being pure.” Ms Brown said patients who were admitted were often very aggressive and became quite unreasonable with what they wanted. It could take up to four to six days for them to come down.
What is ice? ICE is a stimulant drug, which means it speeds up the messages travelling between the brain and the body. It is a type of methamphetamine, which is generally stronger, more addictive and has more harmful side effects than the powdered form known as speed. Ice usually comes as a white or brownish crystal-like powder, with a strong smell and bitter taste. It can also come in the form of sheets of clear crystals.
Other names include crystal meth, shabu, crystal, glass, and shard. How is it used? Ice is generally smoked or injected and the effects can be felt immediately. It can also be swallowed or snorted; the effects take around 30 minutes to feel if it’s used in this way. There is no safe level of drug use. Use of any drug always carries some risk. – Australian Drug Foundation

Crystal methamphetamine, more commonly known as ice, related ambulance attendances are on the rise across Victoria, including the Yarra Ranges according to a recently released report by Turning Point. While the figures locally aren’t as high as other areas, emergency services personnel say the problem is much more widespread as the figures only show incidences where an ambulance was called. Turning Point clinical director Doctor Matt Frei said the recent report on the alarming rise in ambulance call-outs meant there were, without doubt, many more taking the drug that were not necessarily caught up in the statistics.
“
It’s also highly addictive - so a recipe for trouble… Dr Matt Frei
But he said users faced serious medical problems caused by the drug. “It interferes with brain chemistry and is from the stimulant family,” he said. “It’s also highly addictive - so a recipe for trouble.” Dr Frei said the drug had been around for a long time, decades in fact, and was often prescribed for weight loss, fatigue and depression back in the 1950s. “It became apparent, the problems associated with taking the drug - it was addictive and caused several significant side effects,” he said. “Then it became a criminal market.”
He said that a range of people used ice, from young teenagers to 50-year-old women. But it seemed to be the choice of younger drug takers. “From our research you would say the median age of users is about 27 years old,” he said. “But of course, like anything else there are people on either side of that spectrum.” The ability to smoke it makes ice more socially acceptable, according to Dr Frei. “It has an advantage over heroin because it can be smoked as well as injected,” he said. “People don’t like the idea of becoming a ‘junkie’ with needles in their arms, so they smoke it,
not realising it’s just as dangerous.” Sleepness nights, violent behaviour and paranoia are all effects of the drug, and Dr Frei has seen his fair share of symptoms in emergency hospital wards. “We have some people coming in, needing to be held down by police, paramedics, psych ward staff and security staff,” he said. “And these guys are presenting with mental health issues, sores, and sometimes cardiac events.” He said the latest report came from a number of paramedics and doctors noticing a trend. “Hopefully this report makes the people in charge understand what is happening out on the streets,” he said. “It’s a trend that we need to put more effort into.”
Ice is not a myth, urban or otherwise By KATH GANNAWAY AND JESSE GRAHAM THE Mail’s day-to-day contact with police on the beat in the Yarra Valley backs up concerns that ice is not an urban problem, and it’s not an urban myth either. Police such as Kevin Largue at Yarra Junction openly state: “Ice is an increasing problem and it’s in every part of society, not just down in the suburbs,” he said. They see it in the family violence call-outs and say they know it’s a factor because they’re told it is by the people they’re dealing with in those situations. “People who would not have had a tendency (to do drugs) are cropping up. We are seeing people who are cleanskins, never been in trouble before, doing very serious assaults.” It’s a revelation to most of the community who picture drug users as young people, losers and people generally on the thin edge of society. “We’re seeing otherwise stable people - married, a job, young chil-
dren, a mortage - the whole deal and both are addicted to ice and falling apart at the seams.” Yarra Glen Police Sergeant and acting Healesville Sergeant Richard Coulson said that ice was a trending issue in the area, and police were still finding appropriate ways of dealing with the problem. “We’re trying to adopt strategies and ways to deal with situations as they come to hand,” he said. Other police tell the same story and there’s a level of concern not only about the growing burden of
ice crime on their work, but on what it means for the people whose lives are affected, as users, colleagues, family ... friends. Ask them why the general public is not aware of what’s happening and they will tell you the stereotypical portrait of users as skinny 18-yearolds with sores all over their face is not typical; it happens and it’s tragic, but after years of use. They talk of tradesmen in their late thirties and forties, uni students, and professionals; people in all socio-economic groups. Then there are the ones who turn to ice as a way of getting out of their own financial problems, some funding their own use, but often just because they can make big money from a commodity that is increasing in demand and is highly addictive. Sgt Coulson said that Healesville had more ice-related incidents compared to Yarra Glen, but said it was an issue for the whole of the state, not just the leafy towns in the outer east. He said that drug users had
variations in their behaviour, which makes tackling the problem more difficult for officers, who may not know how people will react to situations. And the figures they talk about are staggering. Drug offences recorded in the Yarra Ranges dropped 7.1 per cent between 2012 and 2013, with 374 offences falling to 364 in the respective years. However, assault charges - including family violence assaults - rose 11.2 per cent over the same time period. For a problem that police say is behind a lot of offending, including family violence, police say they need people to stand up and help them. If you know, or suspect, people of using, making or selling methamphetamines - ice - don’t leave it to someone else, call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. If someone is behaving irrationally or violently and police are needed, call triple-zero immediately.
IT’S an addiction that takes hold, turning lawabiding citizens into crazed criminals desperate to find their next hit. While the police statistics don’t yet show it, local police anecdotally say they have noticed an increase in drug-related crime in the region. Many blame the increase on ice use, something that has generally been described as a city drug. But now it’s evident that the drug is no longer just a party drug and is creeping its way into rural areas. After speaking to local police on the issue off the record, the Mail contacted Acting Detective Sergeant Mick Duke from the Croydon Divisional Tasking Unit. His team’s role is to stop the scourge spreading through the region and has been at the forefront of raids on clandestine labs in and around the Yarra Ranges. For them, in a perfect world they could execute a warrant every day of the week. For the community, in a perfect world there would be no need for the warrant. “There is no doubt ice use is more prevalent these days,” Acting Det Sgt Duke said. “And it’s on the increase, and drug-related crime is linked to that.” Acting Det Sgt Duke said once users became hooked on ice, their one focus in life was to find their next hit. “It’s fairly expensive compared to other drugs,” he said. “So they start off paying for it out of their normal wages, then they need more and more so start stealing from family and then it just escalates from there.” He said a number of users ended up trafficking the drug just to pay for their own habit. “They start depending on the drug at desperate levels, some start with petty crime, others more serious,” he said. “We have already seen a link to an increase in drug-related crimes like family violence and aggravated assaults.” With the increased use of ice, comes frantic paranoia. The drug often turns meek and mild personalities into raging lunatics. Not only do users describe feeling like they have the strength of 10 men when they take it, coming down from the drug means they often don’t sleep for days. “In the past we’ve been able to execute search warrants in early morning raids,” Acting Det Sgt Duke said. “But now, it’s not unusual for us to go to a house at 4am to find everyone sitting up in the lounge room taking a hit of the pipe. “And these labs aren’t just a one-off - in a perfect world we could execute a warrant every day of the week in our division.” It’s a dangerous job for the Croydon DTU, with paranoid users and cooks arming themselves to protect their stash. Often they need to call in help from the city. “We have to be careful about who, where, when and what we do,” he said. “It has to be a safe working environment for my team. It needs careful planning and innovative techniques. “But we are determined to clean up the streets.” – Melissa Meehan

Hopeless group helps raise hope on cancer By REBECCA BILLS A TOTAL of 150 residents came together last Thursday to raise funds for cancer research as part of the Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Event organiser and Ferntree Gully Eastern Regional Library branch manager Denise Hibbs said more than $500 was raised at the event through gold coin donations, plant sales and a lucky door prize raffle. “We’ve run it for quite a
The Biggest Morning Tea is a fund-raising event with a focus on getting people together, sharing a cup of tea and helping those affected by cancer, with all monies raised going directly to cancer research. Leading up to the event when inviting community members, Ms Hibbs said many shared their own cancer stories. “This is a well-established cause and everyone enjoyed the friendly atmosphere,” she said.
number of years, nearly eight, and it is a lovely community event that helps raise funds for a wonderful cause,” she said. “People love coming to our morning tea, we have a lovely singing group called the Hopeless Romantics performing which was a much loved feature of the morning tea.” Ms Hibbs said the Ferntree Gully Library was not just a library but an important part of the community where people came together and shared stories.
IT WAS a location change at the Mount Evelyn Biggest Morning Tea that saw participants enjoy the morning even more. After the last few morning teas that were hosted outside near Morrision House, this year the Mount Evelyn Chamber of Commerce decided to host the event in the warmth of the Mount Evelyn Scout Hall. Event organiser and chamber member Gary Freeman said all who attended last Thursday’s morning tea said they really loved it. “There were 200 serves of scones and they were all gone by the end,” he said. “It was only standing room in the hall - it really was a good response from the public. “A few stallholders came along and set up inside the hall, and it was really good for everyone to get together and raise money for a great cause.” Mount Evelyn Chamber of Commerce president Kathie Freeman said despite not raising as much money as they did last year, however over $1000 was still raised to go towards cancer research. “We are really happy with the turnout of over 200 people,” she said. “People didn’t just come and go like they have in past years when it was held outside, this year they sat down and enjoyed

fle tickets and the morning tea would be going to the Cancer Council. “All the scones were baked by Ranges Tech and the ingredients and produce as well as the raffle prizes donated by local businesses,” she said.

Blonde’s big voice By REBECCA BILLS SHE’S the beautiful blonde bombshell from Upwey who had all the judges begging. Tasha Amoroso was a contestant in this year’s Channel Nine hit show The Voice and was snapped up by international superstar coach Will.i.am. In her piece to camera, the 25-year-old shared her struggles with bulimia which caused permanent damage to her vocal chords. But, dubbed ‘the little yellow pocket rocket’ on Twitter, still managed to spin all four chairs with her perfect performance of the Lumineers’ hit Ho Hey.
“I just went on the show to give it a shot and getting on a team is just an amazing feeling,” she said. “When I was up on the stage I was really scared and really nervous singing to the chairs then around three quarters through the performance I looked away from the chairs and when I looked back everyone had turned. “Going into the show I made a conscious decision to be open about my life, which is a big, big step as I’ve kept a lot of it a secret for so long - it’s a big weight off my shoulders.” Ms Amoroso said she didn’t think she was a role model for
girls who were suffering from eating disorders but she was just being honest in saying “this is my story and this is what I’ve battled”. “I think doing anything that is negative repetitively, eventually something negative is going to come from that and my voice suffered,” she said. “Mental illness is an ongoing battle and I’m nowhere near what I was five and even 10 years ago. “It’s a day-to-day thing, I’m a lot happier and it’s definitely a journey I’m still on.” And that journey has led the local country singer-songwriter to work with new mentor
Will.i.am. “It’s quite funny working with him, his mind is always going a million miles an hour,” she said. “He brings a lot of humour to everything and he’s really fun.” Ms Amoroso will be paired up in the ring for a sing-off like no other in the upcoming battle rounds. “I’m just going to go out there and give it my best,” she said. “I’ve never been in a position like this before to fight for my spot, it’s something different and it’s a challenge that, hopefully, I can pull through.”
Art’s heart in the fire frame By REBECCA BILLS FIREFIGHTERS at Belgrave CFA are gearing up for their 31st annual art show. With more than 350 pieces from local and national artists from around Victoria on show and for sale at the event, the community is being welcomed to come and participate in supporting the brigade. The brigade uses the art show as its major fundraising event of the year. Belgrave firefighter George Harmon said this year’s raised funds will go towards purchasing an additional tanker and other essential equipment to benefit the local community. “The CFA recently replaced our 18-year-old tanker with a new one due to the risk and exposure that we have in the Dandenongs,” he said. “However, the way firefighting goes these days is that they use strike teams and, for example, any tanker can be pulled out to be used in fighting a fire at any time across Victoria. “This only leaves us with a littler vehicle that holds 500 litres of water to
use if something happens close to us so that is why we are raising money for an additional tanker that will always remain in the Belgrave area.” Mr Harmon said the annual art show has created a very reputable name within the arts world. “We have works by famous and not so famous artists with the art covering a wide range of mediums,” he said. “There are a few that sell for two to three thousand dollars however most are very affordable and of excellent quality. “We now have works from artists that have been shown here for 10 to 20 years - it’s really wonderful.” The Belgrave Fire Brigade Art Show will commence with a Champagne opening on Friday 6 June from 7.30pm which also includes a presentation of awards to various artist. The opening costs $12, however its free entry to the show from the rest of the show running from 10am to 4pm from 7 to 9 June at Belgrave Fire Station, Bayview Road, Belgrave.

THE Nicholas Chamber Orchestra (NCO) will be kicking off the Classical Tracks winter series as part of the Culture Tracks program. NCO is predominantly made up of local musicians who are passionate about making orchestral music a staple of the ranges. Music Director Eric Klay said the group was formed four years ago because there were two people in the area who wanted to play chamber music but did not have an outlet close by. “When we first started we did our first performance at Stones of the Yarra Valley in 2011 and 70 people turned up to the chapel to listen,” he said. “Most were our own family and friends, however since then our audience has grown to 220 at our last performance at Burrinja. “Everyone is excited about the audience size growing and it just shows that there is a need for classical music to be played in the hills and it really is appreciated.” Each Sunday afternoon throughout the winter season some of the best known classical ensembles and performers from around Australia will be showing off their talents including the Melbourne Guitar Quartet, Australian Octet, ACO Virtual and the Nicholas Chamber Orchestra. Mr Klay said those who attend the opening performance of the program will witness an orchestra that is happy and loves music. “Audience members will get to hear a more unusual arrangement with the performance broken into two parts - the first half classical and the second half jazz,” he said. “It’s a wonderful experiment of putting classical and popular together. “There is no point putting on performances that nobody wants to see but people have been saying to us how good it is that they now don’t have to travel into town and pay big bucks to listen to quality music.” The Classical Tracks Season begins on Sunday 1 June with the Nicholas Chamber Orchestra performing at Burrinja from 2pm onwards. For more information on the Classical Tracks program or to purchase tickets, visit www.culturetracks.info.

CONTEMPORARY DESIGN HIDDEN at the end of the driveway and surrounded by mature landscaped gardens, this outstanding double storey weatherboard residence is truly breathtaking. The original heritage home has been superbly preserved with 1920s period detailing and attention to quality is paramount in the design and decor. The versatile floor plan gives many layout options. The main entrance opens to a formal lounge and library which is warmed by an open fire that is framed by a timber mantle.
Gleaming hardwood floors throughout complement the many period features. The kitchen has timeless appeal, featuring an island bench with generous storage, Bosch appliances and country style ceramic sink. It overlooks a private courtyard, French doors open onto a timber deck and slate paved outdoor entertainment area. The new owners will be able to enjoy the light-filled family room with ceiling-to-floor glass windows.
This opens into the studio and more French doors give access to an appealing verandah area. The established gardens, pathways and steps lead to hidden areas which contain a wide variety of plantings that are often found in typical hills gardens, but also include many rare and unusual specimens. They are connected by stone walls and wide stone steps. The herb garden, adjacent to the kitchen, as well as a hen house, add to the selfsufficient charm.
PROPERTY OF THE WEEK
The upper level of the home offers spacious bedrooms, complete with modern family bathroom, an open mezzanine study or fourth bedroom. The master suite on the lower level incorporates en-suite and walk-in wardrobe. Situated on a very private two thirds of an acre on a sealed road, and within walking distance to the Olinda village, transport and walking trails, ‘Brecon’ represents quintessential hills living.

Valley back with a win
Belgrave’s Jesse Pearce goes up against Sea Lake Nandaly’s Colin Durie for the ball. 121053
Picture: GREG CARRICK
INTERLEAGUE 2014 THE Yarra Valley Mountain District Community Bank Football Netball League Senior interleague team played host to the Mallee Football League on the weekend. The Yarra Valley ran out the comfortable winner and has put itself back in the top 10 and by all other results over the weekend it looks like it will be a trip to take on Gippsland Football League in 2015. SENIORS Conditions were good for football. The ground was a bit soft in spots due to the rain that fell on Friday but it had no bearing on the standard of football that was played. Yarra Valley came out strongly and got the jump and used the ball far more effectively and played the ground and its conditions well. A seven goal quarter of which five belonged to Wandin’s Michael Fowkes saw the Yarra Valley take a comfortable lead at the first break by 38 points. The Mallee fought back in the second and kicked five goals but the strength of the running players like Luke McKenna (Emerald), Nick Keegan (Olinda) and Rhys Chapman (Thornton Eildon) were always going to make it tough. The lead was extended to 43 points at the major break. The dual spearheads up forward for the Yarra Valley in Michael Fowkes (Wandin) and Daniel Waters (Upwey Tecoma) turned out to be a huge headache for Mallee in the third and they were well supported by the small forwards in Daniel Hurley (Yarra Glen), Jim Messis (Wandin) and Jarrod Bayliss (Wandin). The Yarra Valley held the Mallee to one goal in the third while they managed to kick

Braydon, Brianna are top performers By JAMES LAVEN IT WAS yet another exciting weekend of competition with Yarra Ranges Athletics joined by not one, but two fellow clubs. Cockatoo Little Athletics and Croydon Little Athletics clubs came along to a morning of strong competition, a challenging course, exciting finishes and many personal bests. A huge turnout with the two visiting clubs meant that all races, especially the shorter ones had a very large field. A special mention to Braydon Woolridge and Brianna Moore who both achieved huge personal bests. Yarra Ranges Athletics would like to thank Cockatoo and Croydon for making the day so successful and congratulate all athletes who chased down personal bests or ran on the day. Yarra Ranges Athletics returns next week with Round eight cross country at Margret Lewis Reserve, Coldstream from 8.45am and Athletics Victoria XCR Round three at Brimbank Park, Keilor from noon.

Sumsion-Glasscock combine bags trophy By DENNIS FULLER AT EMERALD Golf Club last Saturday, the final 4BBB championship took place between Ken Sumsion and Peter Glasscock, playing Dean Shannon and Kameron Geeves. Shannon and Geeves led for the entire round until the last putt on the 18th. Then, for the first time, Sumsion and Glasscock hit the front to don the joint crown after a meritorious victory. For those not able to cut the pace in the 4BBB event, after a couple of hiccups, the May monthly Medal was there for the taking. Peter Stevens (13) showed the rest how to pin on a medal when he won with a net 67 to also head up the A Grade crew. B Grade saw a count back take place to sort out the winner. After careful scrutiny using a metric scrute, it was discovered that Barry Cook (18), back after
