Sonya Visser and Glennis Carter perform Piano Concerto in A minor Op. 16 - 1st Movt. by Edvard Grieg which was performed at the official opening of the Albury Civic Theatre in 1964.

■ Veteran musician’s half-century encore...

Memories flood back By KRYSTEN MANUEL LAST Thursday night brought with it a spectacularly vivid walk down memory lane for 76-year-old Glennis Carter. Exactly 50 years ago, Mrs Carter performed at the Albury Entertainment Centre on opening night and she took the stage once again on Thursday on the very same piano. Memory upon memory of standing ovations and the many sublime musi-

cians and singers she and her husband Jack Carter had performed with at the Albury Entertainment Centre flooded back, telling a story of a very different time for the Entertainment Centre, which was known back then as the War Memorial Civic Theatre. “I went to the Melbourne University Conservatorium and moved to Albury as a music teacher,” Mrs Carter recounts.“I taught for quite a few years

and then I married Jack Carter who was the town clerk of the day. “He was a very fine musician. He was a pianist and an organist at St David’s Church for many years. We played two pianos and eventually appeared in shows like Bobby Limb’s Sound of Music, we were regulars on In Melbourne Tonight, we appeared on the Graham Kennedy Show, the Philip Brady Show, and we were also finalists in Showcase.

all of those shows we trialled in Albury from the Civic Theatre. “The crowds were a little different from what they are today because everybody dressed up in those days. “The ladies wore furs, you always had your fur you put over your frock, the hair was always done and there were mayoral balls at the Town Hall the other building across the way from the Civic Theatre. Continued on page 2

“We cut a couple of LP records for WNG Records because of the success of the television performances and they were very well received. “It was a wonderful time. In the evenings, after Jack finished work, we’d fly down there (Melbourne), go straight to Channel 9 for IMT rehearsal with the band, do the show, stay at the Menzies Hotel and come back on the first flight back in the morning. “All those pieces we performed for

while and I said to him ‘I know exactly what you want to do, you need to be by yourself to practice and concentrate, so I’m not going to interrupt you. I’m going to take Yldika - that was his wife - for a walk’. So off we went. “Meanwhile, I hadn’t told Jack that this was happening so he comes home from work, nothing happens, all is quiet. “He walks into the music room and here’s this strange man standing on his head in the middle of the music room. And he said ‘who the Dickens are you?’ And Tamas didn’t get up, he just said ‘I’m Tamas Vasary and I’m doing a yoga exercise before I continue with my practice.’ “Anyway, when I did get back I had an LP recording of his there and I asked him to sign it. So he did, but he also drew a stick figure of himself standing on his head.” It was a full house once again on Thursday night, with each and every person bringing their own memories back to the Entertainment Centre, and everyone enjoying a taste of the old and the new.

volved with music,” she said. “It’s a vocational occupation, you might say.” Mrs Carter’s most memorable story to do with the Entertainment Centre is surprisingly not a specific piece she and her husband performed, nor is it performing with one of the many internationally celebrated musicians, singers or orchestras that have graced the Entertainment Centre stage, or even a costume malfunction. It surrounds the arrival of international concert pianist Tamas Vasary who was to perform at the Entertainment Centre all those years ago. “He was a magnificent pianist, and still is,” Mrs Carter said. “He came to Albury and brought his new wife. He told the ABC Committee he didn’t want to rehearse in the theatre because it was too cold and asked if there was a private home to do some practice. “Immediately they thought of me and the president asked me if Tamas could practise at my house. I said ‘of course!’ So within 20 minutes they were on the doorstep. “We sat and chatted for a

From page 1 “There was a white grand piano in there, then the complex changed and the library came into being and now it’s more a function centre rather than a town hall.” The very piano Mss Carter played last Thursday was also celebrating its 50th birthday, along with a second one, also used in Thursday’s celebrations. “Jack and I were sent to Sydney by the council of the day to purchase those pianos that are in the Civic Theatre today,” Ms Carter said. “They are quite old and it’s sad to say but I think it’s time the Albury City Council thought about replacing them. “The usual lifetime of a commercial piano is 25 years, so they’ve done a wonderful service to Albury, but it’s time they were replaced because they don’t hold their tone over that period of time and they are a bit knocked about.” Mrs Carter has continued her love of music throughout her life, now a music examiner for AMEB Queensland as well as the Australian Guild of Music and Education. “I’m still keeping very in-

Glassed on dance floor By KRYSTEN MANUEL A WODONGA man was glassed in the face in a seemingly unprovoked attack at the Bended Elbow on Saturday night. “The victim and the offender were on the dance floor dancing with each other,” Albury police Inspector Lynelle Rodwell said. “He was struck in the face with a glass, causing lacerations.” The 18-year-old man was not known to his attacker, a 22-year-old woman from Sydney, who used a champagne glass in the attack. “It appears to be an unprovoked attack, they were not known to each other, there was no conversation between them, from what he can recount, prior to the incident occurring,” Insp Rodwell said. “At the present, she’s been arrested and inquiries are still being conducted. They’re still following up their investigation, she hasn’t been charged yet.” The incident occurred about 1am, with the hotel being forced to close before the usual 2.30am closing time. “The police asked them (Bended Elbow staff) to cease trading, which they did, because it was a crime scene and they needed to preserve it for evidence,” Insp Rodwell said. “They assisted police - provided CCTV footage, and security guards provided police with assistance as well.”

Blue Metal Hill rest plan IMPROVED facilities for motorists to stop and rest will soon be available at the Blue Metal Hill Rest Area on the Hume Highway, 18 kilometres south of Holbrook. Member for Albury Greg Aplin said the Australian Government provided $1.2 million for the Blue Metal Hill Rest Area upgrade under the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program. “The project starts on Monday to improve facilities for motorists and encourage drivers of heavy vehicles to comply with legally required rest break requirements by providing improved rest, toilet, shade, shelter and load-

checking facilities,” he said. “Work on the site, 46 kilometres north of Albury, includes providing toilet facilities, including disabled access, along with full water, power and sewage facilities. “Improvements will also be made to lighting, footpaths, picnic tables and chairs at the rest area and trees will be planted to provide more shade.” Mr Aplin said in transporting freight by road some heavy vehicle operators were required to drive for extended periods and fatigue was a recognised workplace safety issue for many truck drivers.

“This upgrade is part of the NSW Government’s commitment to increase and improve rest areas on key freight routes,” he said. Work will be carried out on weekdays from 7am to 6pm and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays. Electronic message signs and safety fencing will be in place to alert motorists to the upgrade work and access to the rest area will be maintained for motorists to continue to use the rest area during work. Work is scheduled to be completed by mid-July, weather permitting.

A 41-year-old man was arrested at the location and taken to Albury Police Station. He was charged with three counts of supplying a prohibited drug, nine counts of possessing a prohibited drug, and one count of dealing in proceeds of crime. The man was refused bail to appear at Albury Local Court the following Thursday.

DENTURES BY DESIGN

Social Seen Winton’s car crowd By KRYSTEN MANUEL,

DENTURE CLINIC

THE 38th Historic Winton meeting was a jaw-dropping success, with crowds that smashed previous records. “We have gone from success to success in the last three or four years,” organiser Noel Wilcox said. “It was staggering, the amount of additional spectator display vehicles we had in attendance over the weekend. “Last year we had around 900 spectator display vehicles on a rough count, this year they did a physical count and it was 2,750. In other words, our spectator display area has tripled in the space of 12 months. “It’s almost as big as Picnic at Hanging Rock which we consider to be the most prestigious car show in Victoria. Humble little Historic Winton has almost taken over that mantle!” Mr Wilcox said the number of people through the gates had also grown dramatically thanks to sunny weather across both days and a lot of hard work behind the scenes from the Austin 7 Club. “The spectator carpark itself, I just looked across and thought it was double what we had last year!” Mr Wilcox said. “We had a big group of campers again, so the camping area was a third to half full which is very surprising for a Historic Winton meeting during the colder months. “I must give a special thanks to the Austin 7 Club who organised the whole thing. We’re looking forward to the 40th anniversary in two years’ time which should be even bigger and even better!”

THE cash has been counted and results are in - the inaugural Border Trust Anzac Day barbecue breakfast raised $920 for Headspace Albury Wodonga. “$920 was the profit, so it was successful,” Border Trust chairman Gerard Van Emmerik said. “We were a bit unsure of how it would go given it was the first year but we certainly sold out of everything we had to offer, so we couldn’t have done anything more than we did and we’ll certainly make some efforts to refine our operation for next year when we do it again.” As anticipated, the local Anzac Day Dawn Service and Dean Street Parade was attended by thousands of people, and the barbecue complemented the existing format by meeting the needs of people who attended

either or both elements on the morning. Volunteers from Border Trust including the board, staff and sponsors, together with Rotary Club of Albury members and students from Albury High School all pitched in together to make the morning a success. Border Trust has promised to continue the barbecue, which came about through a partnership with Albury Rotary Club. “There was an agreement that we would take it on this year and raise money for Headspace with a view that from next year onwards we would continue to do that and raise money towards Border Trust and its activities,” Mr Van Emmerik said. Mr Van Emmerik said Headspace was an obvious and worthy choice of recipient. “It’s a fairly topical issue,” he said.

“There’s been a fairly large community push for a Headspace centre locally. We’re behind that, we think it’s a great idea and we’re happy to support it and do what we can. “It was a great opportunity for us to get involved with a great cause and help Rotary Club and the rest of the community pull some money together.” Border Trust wishes to thank the local businesses who provided produce and services for the day, including Kwik Kopy Albury, Aldi Albury, Woolworth’s Albury, Barlens Hire and Bakers Delight Myer Centrepoint. “Hopefully the community will continue to support the barbecue as it progresses next year and beyond and do some real good with the money that comes out of it,” Mr Van Emmerik said.

Pain group still smiling 20 years on By KRYSTEN MANUEL

THE longest continually running chronic pain support group in Australia - the Albury Wodonga Chronic Pain Support Group (AWCPSG) - is to celebrate its 20th anniversary next month. The group is calling for all past members to come along on the day to help celebrate the success of the group, but also to pay tribute to its founder - the late Helen Cheshire. “Helen was totally bedridden with chronic pain,” AWCPSG president Daphne Pollard said. “Her doctor suggested she go to Sydney to the Persistent Pain Management Clinic and when she left she said ‘if I come back walking I’ll start a support group in Albury’. And she did. “She was born with only one kidney but she lived on a property up near Corryong and had a horse accident and broke her back. “She had steel frames in her back and a lot of trouble getting around. “When she started the group

in 1994 a lot of people came out of the woodwork to join. They used to meet at All Saints Church Hall. “I’ve put together this book that will be given out at the anniversary luncheon - a tribute to her for having started the group and ran it for so long, even though she was a very sick lady.” Ms Pollard even nominated Ms Cheshire for Citizen of the Year for her work with the group, which she won in 2005. Ms Pollard joined the group in 1997, becoming president in 2006. Her chronic pain is derrived from arthritis in her spine, knees and feet. The AWCPSG meets monthly, with guest speakers every second meeting. “It’s not morbid, we have lots of laughs and tell stories, but people come with things that have helped them and may help someone else, or someone has a problem and we discuss it to get help from each other,” Ms Pollard said. “We have coffee and movie

days, or lunch in the Botanic Gardens. We’re just a good little group that love to share with each other - a happy group. “We generally put forward different strategies to learn how to handle different pain at different times and we try to have a guest speaker about every second meeting - someone who might help us with different things. It could be a physiotherapist, doctors, pain management people. “As far as helping people goes, I often have conversations on the phone with people to help those suffering - some people can’t even leave the house. “The point of the group is to help understand that if you have chronic pain you’ll have it for the rest of your life but you have to learn to live with it and sharing with a group is good because you can talk about whatever is a problem with you.” The 20-year AWCPSG luncheon is on Wednesday 18 June, noon for a 12.30pm start at the Commercial Club, Albury. Contact Daphne Pollard for more details on (02) 6025 7632 or 0428 518 972.

WODONGA Council’s civic services officers are conducting the annual animal doorknock to ensure all cats and dogs are registered in the city. The doorknock will continue for a period of four weeks and will cover different areas of Wodonga. The council’s compliance team leader Craig McClanahan said the aim of the doorknock was to educate residents about their responsibilities as pet owners. “People should have registered any new animals by 10 April this year,” he said. “The doorknock will be carried out to remind people that their animals need to be registered. “The council is encouraging those people who have not yet registered their pets to contact the council’s customer service team and register their pets immediately.” Mr McClanahan said pet registration was more than just a lost and found service and allowed the council to know how many pets there were in the city and also helped fund the operation of the pound and ranger services. “Registered pets can also be returned to owners quickly if they become lost,” he said. “It is easy for us to identify owners of lost pets through the registration database and return them as soon as

This is a large increase from last year’s animal registrations of more than 200 pets since the previous registration period. Pets being registered for the first time must be microchipped prior to registration.

Owners are reminded that all pets need to be microchipped under the Domestic Animals Act 1994. All cats are also to be desexed. Wodonga Council enforces a cat curfew where cats must be confined to their owner’s property between 7pm and 7am, seven days a week. Outside the curfew hours, cats may wander freely.

Whitsunday Islands - Queensland The Great Ocean Road is always an amazing experience and Martin’s Albury will take you there!

More travel with Martin’s By KRYSTEN MANUEL MARTIN’S Albury have been taking you from A to B since 1931. What some people may not know is Martin’s ‘A to B’ isn’t just public transport and school buses - there’s a wealth of holiday tours on offer that stretch from South Australia right through to Thailand so you can enjoy the best your country has to offer. The Circle Tasmania tour is departing 14 October and stretches over 14 days. “Tassie is a great destination, there’s a wealth of natural beauty,” Martin’s Albury owner Rosalie Martin said. “It’s sailing over on the Spirit of Tasmania and then we have 14 days on the island going to the west coast. Travellers will do the Arthur River Cruise, Strahan and Gordon River Cruise, coming back to

Cradle Mountain and into Hobart. We’re in Hobart for four nights and then we come back up to Swansea and Launceston. “And of course there’s much, much more. We usually do one tour a year to Tasmania and October is a very nice time to go because everything is green in spring.” The Kangaroo Island tour departs on 10 November and spans eight days. “We’ve added onto the itinerary the Coorong Peninsula Discovery Cruise,” Rosalie said. “We spend two nights on Kangaroo Island, we come back to Mannum - the houseboat capital of Australia, and then home via Mildura.” Finally, a bus tour line-up wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t feature the Great Ocean Road, which spans six days and departs 9 March, 2015.

“We’re stopping at Torquay and going to Surf World, then continuing on to Warnambool for three nights,” Rosalie said. “While we’re there we’re doing the Warrnambool River Cruise, Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, the sound and lights spectacular - Shipwrecked, then we come home via Creswick and stay at a Novotel resort. Then we come home via Shepparton where we do the Hurlstone Homestead. “The Great Ocean Road is one of the most scenic coastal drives in the world.” Currently, there is a strong demand for theatre shows in Melbourne including The King and I, Les Miserables, Italian Winter Masterpieces and Mother and Son. Book now with Martin’s by calling (02) 6040 4400 or visit them at 66 Fallon St, North Albury.

It’s time for a break By KRYSTEN MANUEL THEY say a change is as good as a holiday, but all those jetsetters out there know that nothing beats a good trip away with your loved one. Our new monthly feature will showcase holidays of all types, whether you’re after a short ‘staycation’ down the road or an international extravaganza - rest assured, there’s something in there for you. It’s not exactly unknown territory to feel as if you’re stuck in the rat race, dragging yourself

through each day with nothing to work towards. Maybe you’re the Energizer bunny type who has been ‘go go go’ for way too long, or maybe your partner is the one who needs a gently enforced break. Either way, the hardest part of getting the holiday you need are those first few steps to get you off the fence and into the travel agent. Barossa Valley - South Australia

South-east Asian cruise By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT CAN sometimes be a little daunting travelling to foreign countries - trying to organise connections, wondering what you can eat and taking chances with accommodation. But booking a cruise through Wodonga Travel and Cruise can take away all those aches and pains when organising a special holiday. “Wodonga Travel and Cruise, in its present state, has been here for around 30 years,” senior travel consultant Tony Murray said. “We pride ourselves on good old-fashioned customer service and product knowledge - we’ve experienced a lot of the places we send people to so we have that first-hand information.” Wodonga Travel is currently offering a world of fantastic and inspiring tours, including those from the ever-popular Cruiseco. “Cruiseco is basically a cruise wholesaler, so instead of going into individual cruise companies and booking each individual thing we can go into one place and book pretty much any cruise anywhere in the world,” Tony said. “Whether it be a cruise around New Zealand, a cruise initiating in Copenhagen and going through Russia, one starting in Barcelona travelling to Rome and into Monte Carlo, or even river boat cruising - they’re your one-stop cruise shop.” One of the most desirable adventures on the map is the 11-night Saigon to Siem Reap river cruise, which includes re-

Upper Murray Cottages - the perfect getaway, and not so far away!

A breath-taking destination By Margy Blomeley JUST an hour and a half from Albury is a truly breathtaking holiday destination called Upper Murray Cottages. Situated between Jingellic and Walwa, the resort creeps up the side of a hill across 180 acres, providing commanding views of the Upper Murray region for all who choose to stay. If you arrive in the afternoon, unpack and settle onto the front verandah, you will be taken aback by the view that lies in front of you. The beautiful green valley slopes down to the mighty Murray River, which meanders gracefully into the distance towards snow-capped mountains. As the sun sets behind you,

Experience the colour and beauty of Vietnam and Cambodia. turn airfares, transfers, accommodation on and off the land, plus food and most drinks. “We’re taking from the popularity of riverboat cruising from Europe and going that little bit further back to very popular destinations in South East Asia - Vietnam and Cambodia,” Tony said. “Cruiseco have their own vessels, all the boats are outside cabins, they’re small groups and it’s 95 to 99 per cent all inclusive. “It operates in either direction. The package is two nights’ accommodation at either end with transfers. “There is some touring on land in Saigon and Siem Reap. In Saigon itself you’ll go to the Presidential Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and in Siem Reap you’ll go to Angkor Wat which is an awesome place to visit - very picturesque and very old.” And of course there’s always the option to add on to your

the last rays of sunshine rest on the white mountain-top - a truly spectacular sight. The clear night skies produce the Saucepan, the Southern Cross and a Milky Way so clear and bright you feel as if you could reach out and touch them. When you awaken and look out expansive windows that catch all the view, you will see this same valley transformed with a blanket of fog for as far as the eye can see. It blends into the distance, meeting the snowline and tricking your eyes into thinking a huge avalanche of snow is coming your way. Upper Murray Cottages offers many options for those who

holiday so no stone is left unturned. “There are some tailor-made itineraries but if what’s on the agenda is not on there, we can build an itinerary for them,” Tony said. “We can arrange to extend the trip, whether you want to do an extra night in Siem Reap or if you want to extend beyond Saigon to such places as Hoi An - my favourite place - then you could continue up to Hue which is the former capital of Vietnam, then up into Hanoi which is the current capital and do a couple of nights’ cruise on Halong Bay. “The other thing you could do is to go to Sapa in the hill country. You take an overnight train and the people there look different, dress different, so it’s almost like stepping into another country again - a very cultural experience.” So if this sounds like the holiday to suit your needs, contact Wodonga Travel and Cruise today on (02) 6024 3422 or visit at 86 High Street Wodonga.

like to be active and make the most of the great outdoors - canoe the Murray River, play tennis, golf, fish, bush-walk, bird watch or ride a bike. And with such a picturesque setting, of course you can have your dream wedding here. The resort can cater for your reception in the restaurant, your guests can all walk to bed afterwards and you can look back on your wedding photos in awe. Upper Murray Cottages spoil their guests for choice, with four motel rooms, four three-bedroom double-storey cottages and 12 two-bedroom spa cottages. And as for myself - you will find me on the verandah, soaking in the valley that never fails to soothe my soul.

The Saigon to Siem Reap river cruise is one not to be missed.

WODONGA TAFE has formally opened its new state-of-theart hairdressing training salon. CEO Michael O’Loughlin introduced the facility, known as ‘Hairdesign’ on Monday. “We’re really excited to officially launch the salon now,” BCSL director Victoria Conlon said. “The salon and training program has been designed in comprehensive consultation with local employers and industry professionals to ensure that the delivery of training is efficient and effective for all involved. “Now is the time we can all celebrate making an idea a reality.”

is on the rise. Combined with the need for quality apprentice training in North East Victoria, it says employers are excited about the new facility. “Enrolments have been accepted for the Certificate III in Hairdressing, commencing in July,” Ms Brown said. “This is a national qualification for apprentices who are currently employed. Members of the public can also look forward to receiving haircuts and colour treatments later in 2014, while relaxing in a massage chair, watching TV and enjoying a great coffee.” For more information, contact 1300 69 8233 or email info@wodongatafe.edu.au.

The first intake of students started using the facility in March, enrolling in a course known as the Hairdressing Bootcamp. Those students are now developing skills to help them gain work. Some of them may use this experience to continue studying towards a Certificate II that starts next month. “They (the students) are wearing uniforms and using hairdressing toolkits received as part of their enrolment,” teacher Sallie Brown said. “They really look the part and are soaking up the training.” Wodonga TAFE says demand for pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship training

Pub is close to Shannon’s heart By KRYSTEN MANUEL JUST 30 minutes from Albury is the pub that has it all. If only the walls could talk! Built in 1891, the Culcairn Hotel welcomes every kind of patron - including those who enjoy lunch and dinners when travelling on the XPT - through the doors to utilise the bar, restaurant, TAB, games room, function room, beer garden and accommodation. Operating the hotel is a passion for owner Shannon Barber - who has been involved with the hotel one way or another his whole life. “I love pubs - on both sides of the bar,” he said. “My father and his brother, Wayne and Garry Barber, bought the hotel in the late ’90s. Myself and my brother worked behind the bar and my mother helped run the winery tours, which we’ll start getting going again soon. “Eventually they sold the freehold to the current owners and my cousin (Kieren Barber) and I bought the lease. “We both grew up and went to school here, played footy here, so we know all the locals. It pulled at the heartstrings to get in here and have a go.” And having a go is exactly what they’re doing. Both Shannon and Kieren have big plans for the huge building and grounds which are already underway, starting with the gardens. “The gardens are something we’re trying to concentrate on and get back to pristine condition again,” he said. “It’s a huge area, we have plans to

put in an enclosed play area for the kids. It’s a nice environment for parents to get out there, escape and have a drink knowing their kids are safe. “There’s a huge aviary out the back, we’re going to resurrect it and place some birds in there again which will be a great attraction for the young ones.” Also at the back of the hotel is a marquee - perfect for birthdays, anniversaries and even the odd wedding. “The marquee is fully enclosed with heating, big screen projector and outside bar,” Shannon said. “It’s ready to go for any function. We’ve had birthdays there, and years ago my sister actually had her wedding reception out there!” But rest assured, as the cold weather creeps up, the interior of the pub has even more to offer. Renovated with respect to its history, the hotel offers a rustic, homely ambiance, featuring an open fireplace, exposed timber bar and clever lighting made of everything from seed drills to wagon wheel centrepieces and tram lines. The accommodation has also kept its history.

The Culcairn Hotel is big, beautiful and improving at every turn thanks to publican Shannon Barber. “There are 20 rooms ranging from triples, to doubles and singles with shared bathrooms and showers,” Shannon said. “It’s quite romantic to stay in a pub of this age. They haven’t been renovated to look contemporary, we’ve tried to keep the original feel up.” And of course, the food is well and

truly worth stopping for. “I’m a bit of a foodie so I pride myself on the food side of things,” Shannon said. “I have a brilliant chef in Clinton Brown. We source our meat from the local butcher, we don’t try and be someone we’re not, it’s just good wholesome food.

So if you haven’t been to the Culcairn Hotel and fancy a short 30-minute drive ‘staycation,’ look no further. “It’s just good country hospitality,” Shannon said. “We’re not trying to over-think things with gimmicks or give-aways, it’s just good service, good food, a nice ambience and cold beer.”

Celtic Thunder set to rumble By KRYSTEN MANUEL

THE six superb, resonating voices that were once requested to perform for President Obama at the White House are coming to the Albury Entertainment Centre this Sunday. The 2009 and 2011 Billboard Top World Album Artists, who amassed global sales of over two million and more than 500,000 concert tickets to date, have have had a string of platinum and double platinum discs in Australia, with 2012’s The Show going triple platinum. Celtic Thunder’s 9th album DVD Mythology debuted at number one on the ARIA DVD Chart, remaining on the charts for 25 weeks and reaching gold status. With stats like that it is no wonder Australia has the largest Celtic Thunder following outside of the USA. “Our first time in Australia we were performing in Melboune and we were told it was a sold out show,” Celtic Thunder principal singer Neil Byrne said. “We were a bit nervous about it and then we heard this rumble from the front and looking out the curtain we could see thousands of people banging their feet on the floor and chanting our names to come out and play! “ A few songs later the nerves left with the support we were getting from the area and it just felt like we were preaching to the converted.” Mythology is without a doubt Celtic Thunder’s most extravagant and spectacular show yet and by far the biggest undertaking of producer Sharon Browne and musical director David Munro’s careers to date. An impressive and imposing stage resembling an ancient stone pathway drawn from Celtic lore

Celtic Thunder are set to wow Albury audiences this Sunday evening. will be constructed plus the use of dramatic effects via lighting and choreography. Mythology recounts the history of the Celtic people, their legends, cultures and stories, show-

casing the heritage of modern-day Celts and influences from their Celtic past that make them who they are today. The show includes a mix of favourites, ranging from traditional Irish fare, to international hits such as The Boys Are Back In Town and The Sound of Silence, as well as original compositions including Voices written by David Munro and world-renowned composer Brendan Graham (You Raise Me Up). For Byrne, who has been part of the production from the very start, the journey has been fast but very exciting. “The first few years was the building of Celtic Thunder, since then a couple of guys have come and gone,” he said. “I was always a singer as well. It was a couple of the party nights we had on the bus, where the guitar would come out and I’d be singing lead vocals and Sharon said ‘we might try you on the show.’ “My first song was singing with Keith and

Ryan, it was Hallelujah as a trio.” Byrne is the fifth member of the ensemble which includes Emmett Cahill, Keith Harkin and Ryan Kelly who all perform solo and ensemble numbers throughout the show. Following the tragic death of original principal singer George Donaldson earlier this year, Celtic Thunder has announced they are dedicating their Mythology Australian tour. George’s death has stunned his fellow bandmates, along with their fans. Affectionately known as “Big George”, he was invaluable in helping to establish the show’s trademark celebration of Celtic heritage. Cahill, who left the show in December to pursue a solo career, has graciously rescheduled other commitments to join the tour with Keith, Ryan, Neil and Colm, to pay tribute and honour their lost friend and colleague. Celtic Thunder are performing at the Albury Entertainment Centre on 1 June at 7.30pm. Tickets: gold $119, silver $99. Inquiries: 6043 5610.

rived from the blood of Raven (Lawrence). In order to save both the humans and mutants from total extinction, Wolverine’s (Jackman) consciousness must be sent back in time by Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) to convince Raven not to murder Bolivar Trask (Dinklage). Bolivar is a brilliant mind but intent on destroying the mutants. When Raven finds files detailing the ‘medical testing’ he had done on them, her pain quickly morphs into a vengeful plan to search and destroy Bolivar. With the past as it stood, Raven was captured and her DNA is used to create the Sentinels. And so, Wolverine must somehow convince her to stop, but to do this he needs the assistance of both Charles

Xavier (McAvoy) and Erik Lensherr (Fassbender), who in the ’70s were not speaking. I must say, the storyline was flawless. Though it may sound it, it was not overly complicated, yet still engaging and far from predictable. Each little twist and turn had my brain running at 100 miles an hour, and with such a high-quality cast, it’s no surprise each scene was so beautifully executed. It’s hard to say which actor really took the floor here, but every film I see Jennifer Lawrence in seems to get better and better. And of course the Aussie pride always surfaces when watching our very own Hugh Jackman do his thing - what a legend. - Krysten Manuel

On the Menu Only $13.50 Get set for a particularly unique experience with Chaika.

Chaika has a Balkan vibe By KRYSTEN MANUEL AN ECLECTIC and inspiringly unique band is coming to Wodonga to present a careful and purposeful mesh of sounds from folk, jazz, classical and progressive genres. Chaika will perform at Wodonga Art Space this Thursday to launch their brand new album I Monti - a collection of both original and traditional pieces. A challenge to describe for many, pianist, piano accordionist and vocalist Emily-Rose Sarkova succinctly describes the group as “not something you’ve ever heard before unless you’ve heard us.” “We fuse a lot of different styles of music together to create our own unique sound,” she said. “We’re very influenced by Balkan music and other folk traditions from Eastern Europe. We’re also influenced by jazz and classical cinematic arrangements, as well as simplicity. “One big feature of the group is singing. We have a lot of songs where we have fourpart harmonies, as well as pieces with great jazz improvs, so

it’s really a feast for someone’s musical senses. “What’s particularly fascinating about the group is we do sing in a lot of different languages. We have traditional songs we don’t translate to English, because it doesn’t work. Then we have written pieces with poetry from people we know or have come across which we feel is quite beautiful in a sonic sense but also when it’s translated. There’s some Russian and Italian poetry, and there’s even a couple in English.” The group is composed of six members - Emily-Rose, Laura Bishop, Susie Bishop, Laura Altman, Johan Delin and Rendra Freestone. “We have people from all different backgrounds,” EmilyRose said. “There are two sisters in the band, the Bishops, who grew up playing a lot of folk music and going to a lot of festivals with their parents. They both studied music seriously as well - Laura studied composition and she’s worked on a lot of films, and Suzie studied opera in the UK. “Laura Altman is a childhood friend of mine and she’s

the clarinettist. She’s very heavily into the experimental improv scene in Sydney and also in Europe, so she brings the band a really different sound. “Johan’s on the double bass. He was in a jazz band in the UK and he brings something special. “Rendra is our percussionist. He has a group called the Rhythm Hunters and he also owns the Rhythm Hut on the Central Coast which we’ve played at before. “And I studied piano at the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, but I took up the accordion while I was there and started playing this kind of folk music.” Following their successful debut album of 2012 and Australian tour of 2013, Chaika takes to the road again with this highly anticipated release. The Mountains Tour will traverse the east coast of Australia from Melbourne to Brisbane, playing both capital cities and regional centres. Chaika performs on Thursday 29 May 29, 8pm at Wodonga Arts Space. Tickets: www. chaikaband.com under GIGS page. Entry: $25/$20.

A chalet for the winter By KRYSTEN MANUEL

AS THE leaves turn every shade of red, orange and yellow, we know another glorious winter of hot soups, bed socks and skiing is ahead. But at 12 Barton Drive, Baranduda, you could live the chalet lifestyle from your very own home thanks to stunning exposed rock and timber features, high ceilings, an open fireplace and beautifully established grounds. The chalet-style home is stunning in every respect, set on a three and a half acre block, backing onto crown land for perfect, private family living. A wide, tiled entrance greets the prospective new owners, with timber and brickwork immediately evident, a promise of features to follow. A step down into the main living area reveals a large open fireplace, accompanied by a separate combustion heater, bricked in to create a unique feature wall which stretches up to meet a vaulted timber-panelled ceiling. The large kitchen is sure to be the envy of your friends, again with a brick feature surrounding the electric cooktop. Ample cupboard and bench space provide for easy and enjoyable meal preparation, while a spacious dining area allows for the largest family gathering to spill out to the front timber deck. For those more relaxed alfresco afternoons, the rear paved patio is accessible from the formal lounge, providing the perfect spot for easy entertaining in style. But of course there’s more, with a loft above to provide guest accommodation, extra space for the kids to play, or maybe a place to allow the creative within to escape. Away from the main living hub sit four bedrooms, three doubles and one master. As with everything, space abounds, with the master bedroom

boasting just that, and a stunning renovated ensuite to boot. The three remaining bedrooms all feature large built-in robes and are serviced by a spacious and stunning bathroom. This has been recently renovated and includes a double vanity. And not to be outdone, the laundry is itself of more-than-ample proportions. And the features continue with a third living area downstairs. Here you’ll find space for a fullsize pool table, large entertainment system or any other requirements. A kitchenette is already in place, as is a toilet, making it the ideal teenager’s retreat or man-cave, with scope to even run a small business from. The man of the house will be delighted with the 10m by 10m American-style Colourbond barn the perfect getaway. The mezzanine floor allows storage to keep the lower level clear for vehicles, maybe a second pool table or space to tinker. Three-phase power is fitted for those requiring extra urge for that restoration project or whatever need may arise. The grounds have been well planned over the years, creating a relatively easy to maintain property. A large fish pond with water feature sits pride-of-place, while a rock garden showcases the natural landscape of the area. Mature trees provide a country feel and attract the native fauna, while a natural water course runs through the side of the property. Established lifestyle properties don’t come much better, and this perfectly presented example is one not to miss.

Moving from a flat to a home IF YOU’RE looking to put your flatting days behind you, buying a home as a young couple is an exciting prospect. However, there are several factors to keep in mind when

you decide it’s time to buy. From coming up with a deposit to choosing the right area, the buying process can seem complicated at the best of times. Fortunately, with some careful planning and a sense of reality about what you can afford, you’ll be in a much better position to make an offer on that perfect property, according to First National Real Estate chief executive, Ray Ellis. “Whether you want to buy a home in six months or three years’ time, couples first need to save up a significant deposit,” he said. “Depending on the area you choose to buy in and the kind of property you’re after, the deposit you need could vary greatly. For this reason, you’ll first need to research average house prices in your desired area so you know what figure you’re working towards.” The Australian Securities and Investment Commission says the next most important thing to consider is positioning yourselves to pay off the loan as quickly as possible. A loan to value ratio (LVR) is a figure

that’s calculated by dividing the amount you’re borrowing by the value of the property you want to buy. This figure plays a vital role in the length of time it will take you to build equity. “Couples need to borrow whatever their deposit won’t cover,” Mr Ellis said. “So they should aim for a low LVR - ideally less than 80 per cent. Otherwise, they’ll almost certainly need Lenders’ Mortgage Insurance, which protects only the lender if they default. This is an extra cost that gets added to loan repayments, but doesn’t help pay off the loan, so it’s important to work on coming up with a deposit of 20 per cent or more to avoid this.”

If you’re planning on starting a family in the future, you should consider whether the home you’re buying now will accommodate your future family or whether you’re happy to sell and buy another more suitable property when the time arrives. “Consider the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as outdoor space,” Mr Ellis said. “You’ll also need to investigate what schools and transport is available in the area. Thinking ahead can eliminate the need to sell a home that you’ve come to love because it’s become unsuitable for your needs.”

Estate agent’s reputation matters as much as price MOST people who are planning to buy or sell their home use a licensed real estate agent - with the aim of getting the best advice possible and, at sale time, the best price. There’s another very good reason to use a licensed agent: they are trained professionals working in a profession highly regulated for your protection. The Victorian Government has a licensing system with numerous requirements for licensed real estate agents.

To become a licensed real estate agent in Victoria and buy or sell property, you must have a sound understanding of the legislative and regulatory requirements involved in real estate transactions. In regional Victoria, many agents are multiskilled they not only understand the requirements of selling property in major towns, they are also versed in selling rural properties. Extensive training is undertaken to become either a licensed estate agent or an agent’s representative. A licensed estate agent

can own or manage an estate agency and conduct auctions, while an agent’s representative is employed by a licensed estate agent and may work in sales or property management. The REIV is registered to provide both qualifications. In addition, REIV members must abide by our code of ethics and undertake continuing education to maintain their membership. Agents operate across a range of specialist areas. It includes agents, who operate in residential

or commercial real estate, property managers and buyers agents. Many sellers who are planning to list their own property will visit their nearest agent. However, when choosing an agent, it’s important to check their local reputation. Speaking with family, friends and neighbours provides you with information on the experience they have had with local agents. Seeking advice from people you trust is an important source of information and can be

Strata reform Bill tabled in parliament soon NSW Fair Trading chief policy officer Reece Bolan confirmed that an amended strata reform Bill is set to be completed and tabled in parliament any day now. Proposed changes to strata laws had been delayed in February after the NSW Government acknowledged the need for further consultation with stakeholders in order to get the new legislation right. LJ Hooker Strata Management managing director Gary Adamson attended a joint meeting of representatives from REINSW and Strata Community Australia

and others stakeholders to express their concerns about the continued disregard of industry stakeholders. “We expressed our discontent at how they went about preparing the Bill and the lack of consultation with industry stakeholders,” Mr Adamson said. “As a result of that, we will be engaging appropriate parties to lobby for suitable changes and will also be seeking assistance from Upper House members to facilitate the changes we consider are appropriate. “We will be taking steps

there are some areas in the proposed Bill that need significant industry input,” REINSW CEO Tim McKibbin said. “The significance of the legislation had been previously addressed by former NSW Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts when he released the long-awaited position paper in November 2013. “Mr Roberts acknowledged that strata schemes were the most common land title system for apartment buildings in NSW and it has been estimated that more than 30 per cent of the

to lobby for those changes and provide our feedback to the NSW Government.” NSW Fair Trading released the first position paper on strata reform back in November 2013 and a final Bill was originally expected to be introduced into Parliament early this year. Early drafts of the Bill addressed issues relating to the 70 amendments outlined in the position paper, which included changes to factor in the growth of strata. “Earlier drafts addressed a lot of problems that REINSW had raised, however

state’s population now live or work in strata,” he said. “We will continue to update REINSW members on our lobbying efforts,” Mr Adamson said. “However, once the Bill is tabled, members should consider putting all salient points that are not conducive to the day-to-day administration of the strata scheme and are unnecessary red-tape requirements which we can simply do without in a letter to their local member, the minister and the independent Upper House members.”

just as valuable as an agency’s advertising or their website. So if you are selling your home and buying a new one, or even venturing into the housing market for the first time this year, make sure the estate agents you are dealing with are properly licensed, belong to the REIV and have a strong local reputation. You can search for your local REIV agents, all of whom will be fully qualified, at www.reiv.com. au/Advice/Agency-Search.

Stabilising market shown in latest stats THE Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) says the latest housing finance figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reflect a stabilising market. The figures for March 2014 show, in trend terms, that the number of owner-occupied finance commitments decreased by 0.1 per cent, following increases of 0.1 per cent in both February and January and this is the first fall since May 2012. If refinancing is excluded, in trend terms for March, the number of owner-occupied finance commitments fell by 0.2 per cent again the first drop since May 2012. “Increases were recorded in Queensland, Western Australia, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory with ACT having the biggest rise, up 1.2 per cent. South Australia’s fall of 0.5 per cent was the country’s largest,” REIA president Peter Bushby said. “In trend terms, the number of commitments for the construction of new dwellings climbed 1.7 per cent. “However, the purchase of new dwellings fell by 1.4 per cent and the purchase of established dwellings decreased by 0.3 per cent.” The value of investment housing commitments again increased but by a more moderate rate of 0.4 per cent in March, following three years of consecutive monthly increases. “The proportion of first home buyers in the number of owner-occupied housing finance commitments increased marginally to 12.6 per cent compared to 12.5 per cent in February and the low point of 12.3 per cent in November 2013. This is still dramatically lower than the long-run average proportion of 19.9 per cent and continues to be of concern.”

Maybe things aren’t so bad THE road is winding ahead of me, the weather is mild and the bike feels great. We headed up the river road last Sunday on our way to the Jingellic Hotel for lunch and another terrific ride through our fantastic countryside with a great group of people to a picture postcard destination. Who would believe that it is the end of May and the weather is still so mild and perfect for riding any type of motorcycle that takes your fancy. The great thing about riding through the country side is, while it takes all your concentration, it also gives you time to think. Halfway through the year already, where has it gone? Doom and gloom every time you pick up a newspaper or turn on the television. Petrol prices going up along with the cost of living. But hang on… how good is it really? Here we were, touring through a beautiful part of our country on a Triumph Trophy, a state-of-the-art touring motorcycle with traction control, ABS brakes and a host of other safety features along with long service intervals. The modern motor cycle is safer, more reli-

Whether your Triumph Trophy is original of state-of-the-art, the weather is near perfect for some sublime riding. able and cheaper to run than ever. The clothing we are wearing is safer, more comfortable, more affordable and better value than it has ever been, and there is just more choice than there has ever been. With the strong dollar record low interest rates and a competitive market place the prospects for buying a new bike are better than ever and with rising fuel prices and increasing conges-

tion around Albury Wodonga, it makes even more sense to use a motorcycle or scooter for day to day transport. So not only do you save money commuting, its far more enjoyable than being stuck in a car day-in day-out. So, as the end of financial year sales get going, let’s look on the bright side and find more excuses to enjoy our favourite pastime whether it be for leisure or just getting to work. Safe riding everyone.

Vintage glory hits road By KRYSTEN MANUEL WITH record breaking crowds, beautiful weather and a stunning competition, the 38th annual Historic Winton race meeting was another roaring success. The weekend was jam-packed with 43 track events for all vintage cars and bikes made before 1980 - a ‘non-stop’ event. “Saturday morning at 9am we run into official practice,” organiser Noel Wilcox said. “Saturday afternoon is official racing and Sunday again from 9am 4.30pm - non-stop competition. “The unique feature of Historic Winton is we run both historic cars and bikes, it’s the only meeting in Australia that runs both cars and bikes together. “We ran a group of very old vehicles starting from the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s which are J and K, the old-

est group of race cars out there, and we had a field of 24 vehicles. “The next group which is known as LB Sports and Racing, of which we had a full field with reserves. Again, you would never see that at another historic race meeting in Australia. “Finally, of the main races, there’s Vintage And Post Vintage Regularity where the competitors nominate the time they feel they would be able to negotiate the course in and the closest to their time is the winner. “Those vehicles range through right from a vehicle that actually appeared in the very first Australian Grand Prix on Phillip Island. “We also had a small group of 16 Grand Prix runners-up until 1960. Most of them were ‘Aussie specials’ made out of bits and pieces people had scrounged from the garage or the tip or out in the paddock because after the

war there was very few parts left. “A lot of those vehicles are made up of six different types of vehicles - marvellous ingenuity, how they were able to create a competitive vehicle that was capable of keeping up with any of the later imports that came in. “We’re anticipating maybe 30 Grand Prix Aussie specials for next year.” This year brought with it the usual thrills and spills on the track, which Mr Wilcox admits definitely brings with it its own style of excitement. “The highlights for me are usually the side-car handicap event,” he said. “Every year, we have some sort of an incident with the side car people they’re crazy. “This year, I noticed a crowd moving over towards the fence and I think ‘hang on, that race is happening.’ So I wander over there, you’ve got 20 side

car outfits going down the straight on the last lap, all trying to get across the road before the others. “One of the guys broke his leg, one of the female passengers was deposited off onto the track in front of others coming down - they’re crazy, I just wonder how some of these people survive.” And of course, we had to ask Mr Wilcox - what was your favourite car for Historic Winton 2014? “For me, I’m not into over-restored show queens,” he said. “My favourite vehicle, and I don’t know the year, it was actually a rat rod. “A good friend of mine from Castlemaine bought this chopped down hot rod. It was like it had just come out of the paddock again, that’s the type of vehicle I like to see - the old but originals rather than things that have been over-prepared and look nothing like

they really were when they were first built. “It was originally a Ford. It had the motor sticking out through the bonnet with the exhaust pipes going up into the air. The gear shift was a cast of the guy’s arm - he would shake hands with himself changing the gears. “A Mercedes Gullwing, worth probably a million dollars or more was on show. Everybody was crowded around it - this is a beautiful silver Gullwing with the doors up in a prime position in the spectator paddock. “The crowd was hovering around that and the rat rod came in. The crowd just swamped around the rat rod. “It had its warts and all and many little twists about it. They just look like rusty wrecks, but they’re all fully road legal and everything - that’s they type of vehicle I like, and obviously I’m not the only one.”

Lavington will need to bring their best to the party when the Panthers host an improving Wangaratta. (30) Nick Molkentlin, (11) Sam Harris, (30) Tom Sharp, (15) Stephen Jolliffe. Photo: Adam Wilson Yarrawonga will be as big as it gets. The young Hoppers are quick and prepared to take on the game at almost every occasion, a trait I hope they bring to the fore in this contest. Lining up against the star studded Pigeons can be both overwhelming and intimidating and I am looking forward to seeing what Acker brings out of his team. If North Albury goes defensive it will be smashed from the outset, however if it brings its flare and enthusiasm the result will be a lot closer than many expect and an upset could not be ruled out. Lavington will need to bring its best

to the party when the Panthers host an improving Wangaratta. The Magpies have won three of their past four games and are building some momentum as they close in on a top five position. Panthers Adam Prior will enter this game brimming with confidence after an 11 goal haul in the Ovens and Murray’s inter-league game last weekend. Throw in Adam Flagg, Myles Aalbers and big Kosi to the mix and the Panthers will really stretch the Magpies’ defence. Albury’s star midfield also shone brightly in last weekend’s interleague clash and it is likely to cause the Wodonga Raiders a headache or two.

Hyde, O’Hara, Mackie and Polo are as good an on-ball combination as there has ever been in the league. They are simply impossible to hold back as they dominate in the clinches and expose teams with their run, carry and pin-point disposal. The Raiders have had a forgettable month and will be keen on a bold showing to win back some faith from supporters but I just can’t see it happening. Wodonga will get its best opportunity to register its first win for the year when it hosts the Myrtleford Alpine Saints. The Saints, like the Doggies are

also yet to get four points which should ensure both sides bring plenty of desperation to the game. Wodonga has been unlucky with injury and is overdue for a change of fortune... I reckon it will start this weekend.

LAST weekend the Ovens and Murray Football and Netball League sent an emphatic message to all other Victorian Country Football Leagues - ‘we are a super good league’. ‘Although we are still not statistically recognised as the highest ranking league in the state, anyone who witnessed our mauling of the Hampden League would find it hard not to declare us as so’. Brendan Fevola and his elite interleague squad played like they had been together as a team for some years, not just some weeks as was the case. The powerful collection of the league’s best spoilt onlookers with skill, pace and finesse. It was a sight to behold and some of the best football I have ever witnessed. A big congratulations must go to the league for re-igniting the pride among the playing group and supporters alike. Let’s hope the passion continues to burn for another two years after which I am sure we will be officially known as the big dog of country football. Great job! So it’s back to the home and away football this weekend for round seven of the Ovens and Murray season. This round presents some big challenges and opportunities for some. Corowa Rutherglen will meet the Wangaratta Rovers in what is probably their most important test for the year. The Roos currently sit in fourth position but are yet to defeat a side that is positioned in the top five. Wang Rovers are in fifth and a game behind Corowa. A win to Bryce Campbell’s boys would go a long way to making finals this year a reality but, more importantly, will give them the confidence that they belong in the position they currently sit. The Rovers went missing against the power of Yarrawonga a fortnight ago and will be determined to get their season back on track. North Albury has relished every challenge thrown at them thus far and their clash against reigning Premiers
