Raising a cup for cancer By JORDAN CULLEN OVER 100 people attended the Cancer Council Queensland’s Biggest Morning Tea at Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club last Thursday, with over $2500 raised for the charity. Event organiser Annie Evans said she was grateful for such amazing community support. “The generosity of local businesses was just fantastic,” she said. All money raised from the $10 entry price was directly donated to the Cancer Council Queensland. Club at the crossroads By JONATHON HOWARD THE Cooroy Bowls Club will cease to exist from the end of this week, but a new club will emerge under the title “Cooroy Community Bowls Club Inc”. Cooroy Bowls Club members’ bowled their last rounds under the former name today (Thursday, 29 May), before new management takes over the land and lease from tomorrow (Friday, 30 May).
While members have welcomed the move to continue lawn bowls at Cooroy, in many ways they have reached a crossroads over what they feel is an “uncertain future” for the club. The former Cooroy Bowls Club was owned and operated by the Cooroy RSL and Citizens Memorial Club, but the land was sold to Listra Pty Ltd under what many members labelled a controversial move. Listra company director, Ronald
McCarthy, has expressed a keen interest in working with the club members to ensure a long term future for lawn bowls in Cooroy. “Because the club was run by a community group, and had not been formally made a bowls club, we had to take steps to form a new club under the title Cooroy Community Bowls Club Inc,” he said. Mr McCarthy said he was now in discussions with bowls members to

agree upon a long term lease agreement. “It’s our goal to continue bowls in the community and we’re talking with members over making that happen,” he said. Mr McCarthy said rumours swirling around town over the takeover were only making matters worse. “We absolutely support bowls and we support the group, we’ve provided the bowls members with a six month sympathetic agreement while we
work towards a long term plan,” he said. Interim secretary Julie Ainscough said the club was recruiting members and the ball was already rolling. “We’ve already hit 100 new members for the new club and we are still recruiting,” she said. “We’re also looking for new office bearers for the new club.” Ms Ainscough said the club would hold an annual general meeting open to the public on 5 July.

NOOSA residents are invited to a charity workout event to raise funds and awareness for National Men’s Health Week, 8-15 June. The event will be hosted by Noosa fitness coach Leevi Romanik, who feels passionately about creating awareness around men’s health issues. “Us males may seem tough on the outside but our average life expectancy is lower than women and we outrank them in death rates in heart disease, car accident, liver disease, suicide and lung cancer just to name a few,” he said. Mr Romanik said the topic of men’s health was also a
very personal one. “I’ve had some health issues where I didn’t know where to turn and where to get support - it was a tough time and finding the right people really helped me through,” he said. “So I got the idea to do a charity workout event.” Mr Romanik encouraged both males and females of all ages to attend. The cost is $10 and attendees will go through a group workout with all proceeds going towards the Men’s Health charity. The charity event will take place at the Girraween Sports Complex, Noosa, on Saturday 14 June, from 7am to 8am.

NOOSA seniors can now unlock the secrets of social media during Facebook Fridays at the Noosa Library. The library, in Wallace Street, is offering a free weekly class to teach residents how to update their status and understanding the security and privacy settings. Noosa local Sue Clapham said she had been using Facebook for a while but had no idea about its security features. “It’s a great class and you get so much more understanding of Facebook,” she said.
“I think some older residents adapt well to using Facebook - but they have to be keen to learn.” Noosa Library information specialist Jill McLaren said residents without a Facebook account were missing out. “There’s a lot of community things in Noosa that seniors and residents are missing out on,” she said. “They can keep in touch with relatives, share photos, learn about local events and make new friends.” Mrs McLaren said bookings were essential and for attendees to please bring their laptops. Koala Crusaders at U3A By JOLENE OGLE KOALA lovers are in for a treat with Queensland Koala Crusaders president Meghan Halverson set to speak at U3A tomorrow, from 1.45pm. The talk is open to the public and will begin with the screening of the documentary Making Room for the Koala, co-produced by Meghan in 2012. The documentary explores the effects of development, disease and devastation that the koala has faced in Australia and tells the story of a koala named Burman. Well-known for her work with the endangered animal, Meghan said the talk would also involve a group discussion
to develop ideas for better koala conservation. “We will discuss ideas for a brighter future for the koala,” she said. “We welcome input and ideas that create community action for conservation measures of the koalas and their habitat. “Our motto is ‘What is best for koalas?’ and I believe that we have to let go of the past and learn from it.” Meghan said a co-operative community approach would help secure the future of the beloved marsupial. “We must move forward despite differences to find a common ground to work together to improve conservation outcomes,” she said.
Meghan said the community needed to act now because “we are at a tipping point” for the koala with the animal predicted to be extinct within two years if no action is taken. “If we look to preserve habitat and connect what still exists, create safe havens for those koalas that are non-releasable and support the efforts of the groups acting to do what is best for koalas, then perhaps they have a brighter future through our collective efforts,” she said. Meghan’s talk will take place at the U3A House located at 64 Poinciana Avenue, Tewantin, tomorrow from 1.45pm. Admission to the talk is only $4 and includes afternoon tea and bookings are not required.
Injured in horror crash A GERMAN backpacker and a 63-year-old woman remain in a critical condition after a horrific crash on Noosa Parade on Monday afternoon. Police said a car appeared to have driven through the roundabout, with witnesses saying the car was “out of control” before colliding with two male pedestrians. A 24-year-old German man suffered serious
leg injuries and was airlifted to Brisbane hospital, where he remains in intensive care. The driver of the vehicle was taken to Nambour Hospital and is also in a critical condition. A 20-year-old man was also struck by the car, but was discharged from hospital on Monday night. Police and the Forensic Crash Unit are investigating.
THE idea of a free bus service running throughout Noosa on public holidays has received overwhelming support from residents, visitors and business owners. The support follows the recent success of the Noosa Shire Council’s free Easter bus services. More than 33,000 people used the free Easter buses over eight days and Translink reported almost double the number of passengers for the same period last year. The Easter trial was likely to continue next year, however, questions have been raised over whether Noosa could benefit from a free bus during public holidays. So Go Bar publican Gill Lavi said the Easter service boosted his business and the town was buzzing.
So Go Bar, publican Gill Lavi.
“I am really supportive of the idea of a free bus on public holidays,” he said. “It allows our customers an easier way to get in and out of town, more people use the buses and it brings more tourists to town.” UK visitor Helen Rees said having a free bus service was common in other tourism destinations. “There were plenty of free buses in Sydney and I’ve seen more throughout my travels,” she said. “I think it’s more convenient for visitors to have a free service occasionally, especially considering the high cost of public transport.” Laura Schikatis was visiting Noosa from Germany and said she could barely afford the public bus ticket price. “I think it would be a good idea - I had to pay more than $7 for a short trip around Noosa
Noosa visitor Helen Rees.
which I thought was very high,” she said. Cooran local Fiona Griffin said her kids used the free bus and loved it. “It’s a great idea - it will free up more parking, get more cars off the road and puts our public buses to good use,” she said. Noosa Shire councillor Sandy Bolton, who advocated for the free Easter bus service, said the idea of a free bus on public holidays was a good one - but it would come at a cost. “Anything that reduces congestion at peak times would be an advantage,” she said. “I think it would be a wonderful incentive, but it comes at a cost and this is something the council needs to discuss and weigh up both the positives and negatives.” Would you like to see a free bus service on public holidays? IT seems that Noosa is continuing to make its name across not only the country but also the globe, with Domestic and International Visitor Survey results for the year ending December 2013 showing some fantastic figures. The domestic market for Noosa is as strong as ever, with total spending from domestic overnight visitors increasing slightly to almost $580 million, with increases in all major markets. While the number of nights spent in Noosa by domestic visitors overall fell, Noosa’s major markets of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne performed well, with Sydney showing an increase of 25.8 per cent in the number of nights stayed. Furthermore, the number of overnight visitors from Sydney and Brisbane increased, with Sydney up almost 10 per cent. Brisbane numbers picked up again (+1.1 per cent) while the number of day-trippers fell,
indicating that some domestic visitors are starting to stay overnight again in beautiful Noosa. The international scene is also gaining momentum, with great results from Noosa’s key long haul markets. Showing strong signs of recovery as the Australian dollar softens, inbound tourism is trending up, with the overall number of nights increasing almost two per cent on the previous year and growth in the number of visitors from USA (+9 per cent), UK (+15 per cent) and
Germany (+0.4 per cent). After falling for the past few years, the number of visitors from New Zealand was steady, and nights in the region were up by six per cent, with an average length of stay of 7.1 nights. They have also increased their spending by almost three per cent. The dollar contribution of international visitors is also significant totalling $156m with UK (up 13 per cent to $59m) and USA (up 28 per cent to $30m) spending the most. As the Tourism Noosa team continues to welcome our domestic and international visitors, it is a great time to reflect upon the positive economic impact tourism has on the whole community. Those who are holidaying in our region bring with them a huge flow-on effect across the area, spending largely at local businesses such as accommodation, transportation, restaurants, activities and tours. So next time you come across Noosa holiday makers, don’t forget a smile and a big ‘welcome to Noosa’.

IT’S that time of year again State of Origin time. Game one started the Origin series last night and Noosa residents were fired up for Australia’s biggest state-versus-state rivalry. Both Queensland and NSW merchandise was flying off the shelves at Flash Harry’s inside the Noosaville Civic Shopping Centre. Manager Andrew Thiele said merchandise sales had been mixed between the two teams - but a lot more Blues’ stock had sold last year. “We saw a lot of NSW merchandise sold in Noosa last year, but it’s a bit early to tell at the moment,” he said. Mr Thiele, who is a fierce Blues supporter, said he was

was expecting another Blues’ thrashing. “It will be so for Queensland - nine in a row,” she said. However, Mr Thiele said Queensland enters the series with “a lot more to lose”. “There’s plenty for Queensland to lose this year, including their reputation - watch those blues,” he said.

Noosa’s warm welcome By JOLENE OGLE TOURISM Noosa last night celebrated one year since the launch of the Welcome to Noosa initiative with more than 850 locals and businesses already graduating from the program. Designed to increase visitors’ experience in Noosa, the Welcome to Noosa program arms participants with information about the region, including the area’s history, local attractions and information on flora and fauna. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said the program was perfect for anyone living in Noosa. “Welcome to Noosa is all about giving locals, whether you’re specifically in tourism operations directly or whether you’re a local living here, knowledge,” he said. “It empowers everyone with information about the area. “Noosa has an abundance of attractions, but what we really can improve on is enhancing the visitors’ stay when they are here.”
Tourism Noosa GM Damien Massingham and Council CEO Brett de Chastel have both completed the program and look forward to enhancing the Noosa experience. Noosa Council library services coordinator Mel Tong has completed the online course and said she learnt a lot about her home town.
“I’ve lived here for so long, and there is just so much I didn’t know about the area,” she said. “Welcome to Noosa covers Noosa right to Fraser Island and includes so much interesting information. It is great to be a part of visitors’ unique experience in Noosa and help by providing some great information.” Mr Massingham said Tourism Noosa was excited to announce the next stage of the Welcome to Noosa campaign with the introduction of an awards program. “Every month, we will award the best business and best individual Welcome to Noosa,” he said. “The awards are a great way of recognising businesses and individuals who have really got behind the initiative and give true recognition to where it is deserved.” To participate in the Welcome to Noosa program, simply visit www.welcometonoosa.com.au for more information.
MEMBER for Noosa and Multicultural Affairs Minister Glen Elmes opened East Coast Car Rentals in Marcoola on Saturday in what he said was a valuable asset for local tourism. “It’s particularly important from the point of view of Noosa because about 50 per cent of the tourist traffic that comes into the Sunshine Coast Airport, those people finished up in Noosa,” he said. Mr Elmes said the GPS-fitted vehicles have directions to Noosa pre-set. “They’ve flown here, they get out of a plane, they hop into a hire car and they spend their holiday in Noosa,” he said. Mr Elmes said the businesses proximity to the airport and to Noosa was valuable for the region. “These sorts of places are essential to our wellbeing and our future prosperity,” he said.
Company director, Dr Boon Tan, said Noosa was particularly popular for it’s climate, beaches and accommodation. “We find that Noosa is increasingly a very, very attractive tourist destination,” he said. Dr Tan added that while the Sunshine Coast was on the visit list, Noosa specifically was gaining popularity. “Noosa Heads is a place that every tourist wants to visit from Asia,” he said. “Plenty of tourists from, Singapore, China and Hong Kong.” Manager of the Marcoola branch, Richard Elford, said their location was beneficial to customers. “Customers get really good service being this close to the airport,” he said. “We offer quality cars at a good price.”

UNDERSTANDING, inclusiveness and celebration are the keys to a brighter future in reconciliation, according to Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Glen Elmes. As National Reconciliation Week draws to a close, Mr Elmes said it was important to develop an understanding of Indigenous culture. “We need to try, and if we don’t understand it, then we need to accept that they have a culture that has been passed down all of those tens of thousands of years,” he said. “While you may not clearly understand it ... we should understand that it is very important to the Indigenous population. “It’s about being understanding, it’s about being inclusive, it’s about celebrating this very, very special population of people living in this country.”
Mr Elmes said the annual United Synergies Booin Gari festival was a great way to experience and learn about Indigenous culture. “It’s almost 11 months away, but this is a great festival to put in the diary for next year,” he said. Aimed at building a better relationship between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, National Reconciliation Week seeks positive change by encouraging discussion about issues and innovative ideas and actions to make a difference. Mr Elmes said the Week’s theme Let’s Walk the Talk - is an indication of “our collective national wish for reconciliation and highlights the need for a pro-active approach”. “I want Queenslanders to take a hands-on approach to reconciliation, to put past conversations into action and walk together,” he said.

Kids step up for healthy futures By JONATHON HOWARD

“We walk to school every day,” - from left: parent Astrid King, Grade 2 student Ziggy King, Prep student Ava Castro, parent Leanne Castro and Grade 2 student Kai Castro.
PRIMARY school-aged children from Noosaville State School took steps towards a healthier future on Friday 23 May by taking part in the National Walk Safely to School Day. The Walk Safely to School Day initiative aims to raise awareness for the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits of walking. The annual event, now in its 15th year, encourages primary school-aged children to walk to and from school - not just on Friday but every day. Parents Astrid King and Leanne Castro said they try to keep their kids active all year round. “If the weather’s OK, we try and walk to school every day,” Ms Castro said. “It’s great exercise and you can avoid the traffic.” Ms Castro said it was often difficult to pry kids away from the many distractions including the internet, iPads and television. “I don’t allow any use of iPads or other internet access during the week - unless as a special treat,” she said. Hundreds of students and parents took part in the walk across Noosa and the Sunshine Coast to encourage active and healthy kids.
Students from Noosaville State School put one foot in front of the other as part of walk to school day on Friday.
Plea to help cut the fat THE chairman and CEO of the Pedestrian Council of Australia Harold Scruby said unless the Noosa community gets behind the Walk to School initiative the health outlook for local children is not good. “The childhood obesity epidemic has reached such critical levels in Australia, that one in four children are now overweight or obese,” he said. “Unless there are significant changes to physical activity and diet, this is expected to reach one in three by 2020. “Children require at least 60 minutes per day of physical activity - and regular walking is the best exercise for all of us.” Children are encouraged to lead a more active lifestyle by including a walk at the beginning, during and end of each day. The event also promotes improved diets, positive environmental action, better use of public transport with reduced car-dependency and important road safety messages such as “children aged 10 years or under must always hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road,” Mr Scruby said.

THERE is much ado about France at Cooroy State School as students take part in the online Language Perfect world championship. The competition, which finishes today, is the world’s largest online language competition that sees more than 1000 schools compete for the title of world champions by answering language questions. Cooroy State School French teacher Oj Rugins is confident his students will beat their
best placing of 11th in 2012. Mr Rugins said an innovative language learning technique called the Accelerative Integrated Method (AIM) - a gesturebased approach to learning - is helping the students flourish in their French lessons. “(The method) combines a special sign language with story-telling, the use of pareddown language and language manipulation activities in a French-only context,” Mr Rugins said. “As such, it appeals to pretty well all students. The majority of which go on to develop a level of fluency which was previously only possible in schools with immersion programs.”
Cooroy State School principal Des Deighton said the inclass French lessons were proving a great hit with students. “Mr Rugins’ French lessons are full of music, drama and conversations where once you step into the room, no English is spoken,” he said. “All children are thoroughly engaged in the lessons.” Mr Rugins said a special excursion to French-inspired cafe, Maison de Provence, Cooroy, last week was the perfect venue for the students to practise their French. Dressed in traditional French clothes, a troupe of students performed a roving French version of Three Little Pigs as well as a selection of traditional and not-so-traditional French songs for unsuspecting diners.
French language students put on a roving show throughout Cooroy.

NATIVE flora and fauna was the talk of the night at Canapes and Callistemons over the weekend, with Noosa and District Landcare and public relations students from the University of the Sunshine Coast teaming up to raise awareness of the importance of local conservation. The event was held at Outrigger Little Hastings Street and supported by Katz Body Art, Makin’ Roses and several more local business sponsors. USC community events project tutor and mentor Anne Lawrence said she was proud of the effort students put in. “They have been creative, industrious and surprised me every step of the way, they have been fabulous.” Noosa and District Landcare General Manager Phillip Moran said the public relations students from USC worked hard to organise the event. “I’ve been very pleased to work with the students, they have been fantastic,” he said. Mr Moran said he was thankful for the support from Outrigger and all of the sponsors. “It’s a great thing to get young people interested in the environment because they’re the stewards of our environment,” he said. USC PR student Jen Cochrane said it was great to have the support of Outrigger and Noosa and District Landcare. “We’re really happy with how it’s turned out, we’ve got over 80 people here and some fantastic sponsors,” she said.

PEREGIAN Beach bookstore owner Annie Grossman said she has lost count of the number of aspiring authors who have approached her for publishing advice. “I’d get at least one budding author come into my shop each week wanting information about local printers and editors,” she said. “They’re often overwhelmed by the task at hand when it comes to turning their dream of publishing into a reality.” Annie’s bookshop is wellknown for stocking local authors but she said it can be difficult when a self-published book “is not up to standard”. “How can you explain to an author who has poured their heart and soul into a book that their cover is crappy or they’ve chosen the wrong font or the book is the wrong size,” she said. In an attempt to try and answer some of the big questions surrounding self-publishing, Annie has invited local author and book editor Ange Takats to present a workshop, Self-Publishing 101. Ange undertook six months of research before self-publishing her 90,000 word travel memoir, The Buffalo Funeral.
Self-published author Ange Takats will help other budding authors get their works on the shelf in a 2 hour workshop at Annie’s Books, Peregian Beach. “Writing a book is just the beginning of the publishing journey,” she said. “There are so many things that an author needs to consider before investing their time and money into printing a book. “The workshop will cover a range of topics from typesetting and font choice to marketing and distribution.”
The workshop will be held at Annie’s Books, 8 Kingfisher Drive, Peregian Beach, on 5 June, from 6 to 8pm. The cost of the workshop is $60 per person and includes the two-hour tutorial and light refreshments. Bookings are essential, so phone Annie on 5448 2053 to secure your spot before 30 May.

letters Light on facts JOY Ringrose claimed in her letter to the editor that the Federal Government doubled our debt in eight months. Please don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story . Wayne Swan said on 8 May 2012 and I quote: “The budget delivers a surplus this year, on-time, as promised and a surplus every year after that.” He projected a $1.5 billion surplus. The actual result for 2012-’13 was a deficit of $19 billion. Wayne Swan said in his budget speech May 2013 “this budget sets a sensible pathway to surplus”. The actual result for 2013-’14 is a deficit of $47 billion. Joy also mentions “great criticism from the IMF that this government (Lib/Nats) has doubled our government debt”. In February this year the IMF ranked Australia’s growth in government spending the highest in the developed world taking into account the Labor/Green policies. By the way we are also spending $12 billion a year on interest payments on the growing debt and deficits and the Opposition is blocking virtually all of the savings measures and yes tax increases that the current government is trying to get passed. This is going to cause the loss of our AAA credit rating as a nation, further increasing our borrowing costs. The cost increases of a small fuel tax increase of a cent a litre and medical co-payments of $7 will be offset by getting rid of the Labor/Greens carbon tax, thus reducing household electricity bills by around $500 a year but as you may have guessed yep, Labor and the Greens want us all to keep paying unnecessarily high costs of electricity and destroying jobs by making us as uncompetitive as we can be. Industry is closing down as we continue to export jobs by being among the most highly
paid, lowest productivity countries in the world with most of the poor decisions causing this problem made via the Labor Government policies. By the way local youth unemployment I would think is over 20 per cent so it may be worth giving the conservatives a go at fixing our massive and growing economic issues - after all, they cleaned up Labor’s mess last time (under the Howard Government). They left Labor with money in the bank and no deficits but Labor just can’t keep their hands out of the till or off the credit card so now the conservatives have to rebuild our economy again and give our kids the opportunities they deserve - now that would be a good idea, wouldn’t it? David Wilson, Noosa Waters.
Come off it, Joy JOY Ringrose’s offering cannot be left to go through to the keeper. Gee Joy, government debt still going up after eight months, surely it couldn’t have anything to do with years of Labor and Greens mismanagement, could it ? After all, the same economic vandals left Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland as basket cases and any Victorians living up here will well remember the Cain/Kirner years and how long that fiasco took to repair. The Labor/Greens answer to financial management is simple, if there is money in the bank then spend it, when that is gone then borrow it and when there is not enough revenue to pay the interest then borrow that too. Look at the facts, Joy, of the debt-riddled legacies left by successive Labor governments all over Australia and it is a bit rich for you to call this government poor financial managers when time after time they are left to clean up a Labor mess. I suppose it is not surprising when any utterances from the Labor/Greens

Weaving a web THE new law being considered where motorcyclists can weave in and out of traffic makes you ask, was the one-metre rule only for pedal cyclists? Who would be so naive to believe that it would only by adhered to in stationary traffic? Are these new laws about fines and not about safety? E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.
Price of water DO YOU think that water services should cost a fair price at your water meter and not also include more hidden taxes by falsely charging for sewerage services? Last week there was a notice with your water bill telling how Unitywater (alias Goldwater) is giving us back some money and taking it all straight back again. More tax from raising its water and sewerage service prices at your water meter will be offset by reducing connection charges. Does 90 per cent of metered water go down the toilet if you water a garden? Does 90 per cent go down the sink if there is another severe drought? For Noosa, the average household wastes less than 70 per cent of its metered water. This sewerage charge is being introduced despite the government’s crocodile tears about families doing it tough, and the rising cost of living on the Sunshine Coast. Hidden taxes in Goldwater’s bills will continue and now the State Government intends to eliminate the solar feed-in tariff because it’s unfair. Give people who love their gardens and have installed solar panels a break. Goldwater was set up in 2010 following council amalgamations on the

Sunshine Coast to sell households water. It has collected hidden taxes amounting to about $160 each year from Noosa and Coolum residents since then. So far only $80 was ever given back. Unite against Unitywater. R.J.Koerner, Coolum Beach.
Wood for the trees I’VE been called a scientific illiterate and dishonest person recently but in both instances the accusers failed to show how my facts were wrong. I put parentheses around the comments (increasing) and (meaning no change) in the IPCC summary so readers would understand what the IPPC was saying. For the record I did try to highlight my comments with an asterisk which was left out of the published letter by the editor. The IPCC considers the lack of warming to be a temporary glitch rather than an emerging new trend. They have to take this position or they negate their reason for being. The truth is the IPCC report recognised the climate reality hasn’t matched the climate models since 1998 and that is the evidence Graham Coghill says doesn’t exist. Sometimes the truth hurts so bad some choose to shoot the messenger. Woody Dass, Noosaville.
Banking on betrayal THE community of Pomona has just received a cold and unfeeling letter from the ANZ Bank advising them that they will be closing the branch down in October. This is yet another betrayal of a hinterland community and businesses by a multi-national organisation whose decision-makers are faceless, overpaid bureaucrats who wield their power from their ivory towers and are too gutless to face the community that has supported them for years. We will transfer your ac-

counts to Cooroy they say, but they just don’t get it these city slickers who never face real people. They don’t get that it is about community, it is about social interaction, we like being able to go to a branch and speak face to face with bank staff, many of whom live in the community they serve. Without a bank in town it is feared that the town businesses will suffer. As people are forced to go to Cooroy, they may as well do some other shopping there as well. Well if I have to go to Cooroy then I will be going to a bank that gives you service and shares some of its profits with the community, the Bendigo Bank and I encourage all ANZ customers to transfer to the Bendigo, they will help you. Shame ANZ, shame. Stephen Hilditch, Pomona.
Danger in the water I WAS alarmed by recent Royal Life Saving figures that showed Queensland rivers accounted for 219 drowning deaths in the state over the past 10 years. It was also hugely concerning that in more than a third of deaths, alcohol was a contributing factor. As a personal injury lawyer for almost 15 years I have seen a number of clients who have been injured or permanently disabled as a result of waterrelated accidents, many of which, sadly, could have been prevented. Our rivers and waterways are part of the Queensland way of life, but it’s important to remember that a calm surface can hide strong currents and submerged objects, and alcohol can impede our judgement and our ability to get out of a dangerous situation. We shouldn’t stop enjoying our rivers, but these figures are a good reminder to always be mindful of the dangers and put our safety first. Karen Simpson, General Manager, Personal Injury Queensland, Slater and Gordon.

The new owners will be able to enjoy the sand between their toes, the smell of the crisp sea air and hear the crash of the waves on the shore only metres from their home. This one-of-a-kind home is architecturally designed by Stephen Kidd to make the most of the breathtaking ocean front views. Subtle Balinese influences can be seen inside and out with luscious gardens and rich timber enhancements, all perfectly designed for the sub-tropical climate of Queensland. C21 award night rains gold IT WAS raining gold for the Conolly Hay Century 21 group who took out numerous awards at the C21 State Awards, last week. Agency newcomer Jason Wedge stole the show with his gold award for Gross Closed Commissions between $70,000 and $100,000. Jason said the award was a big surprise but he felt very privileged to be recognised for such an award by Century 21. “Assisting buyers with their real estate needs is a profession that I absolutely love,” he said. “Seeing the smiles on the faces of my clients makes all the hard work worthwhile.” Co-principal Mike Hay only just missed out on a platinum award but still went home with the honour of a gold. Mike said the awards were a great success for the Noosa-based agency. “We are very proud of the team’s achievement,” he said. “This is a great result for both the Conolly Hay Group and our clients.” Co-principal David Conolly was awarded for Gross Closed Commissions between $100,000 and $180,000. Overall, the Conolly Hay Group placed third in the region, fourth in the whole state and 21st in the country.
C21 Conolly Hay Group co-principal David Conolly also took home a gold award.

SOLD – 200 Beddington Road, Doonan.
14 Mount Cooroy Road, Eumundi, is expected to sell before Saturday.
Big weekend of sales and auction A WEEKEND full of auction action, big sales, and new listings is a great sign for the Noosa real estate market, according to local agents.
“Inquiry is increasing, there is a rise in building activity and a return to price growth,” he said.
within one day - before it even hit the internet.
“With falling stock levels, relative affordability and demand from interstate and expat visitors, values are slowly increasing.”
Four new listings have also been added to Robert James Realty’s extensive property portfolio with all newly-listed homes priced over $850,000.
ONE Noosa principal Craig Brumby said the sale of the luxurious 517 The Ridge, Noosa Springs, was a further sign of market confidence with the successful sale closed close to a healthy $3 million.
At auction, 14 Mount Cooroy Road, Eumundi, was passed in at $1.3 million, but RJR agent Janet Kake predicts a quick sale with a large crowd and strong interest shown at the auction.
“Confidence in the market is strong and buyers have come out of the woodwork in the last couple of weeks.”
Robert James Realty has also enjoyed successes with 29 Maddens Crescent, Peregian Springs, as marketed by Tanya Page, listed and sold within three weeks.
The home will again be open this Saturday, from 1pm, if not sold prior.
Shane said this was an expected outcome as the market was in the recovery stage on the “real estate property clock.”
Robert James Realty sales agent Damien Page also hit a hole in one when he sold 21 James Cook Drive, Sippy Downs,
Richardson and Wrench principal Shane McCauley says confidence in the market is improving as the firm experiences an increase in inquiries and activity. “On the weekend the open homes were steady throughout and we had some great buyers in Hastings Street on Sunday,” he said.
The auction action continued on Saturday 23 May with Century 21 Conolly Hay Group’s David Berns securing the sale of 200 Beddington Road, Doonan.

action More than 70 people attended the auction, with six registered buyers and over 40 bids. Auctioneer Gordon McDonald of Jason Andrews Auctioneers brought the gavel down on the sale, which is reported to have been in the high $500,000s. “It was the most exciting auction we’ve seen in a while, and we’re pleased to have achieved $45,000 above the reserve price,” David said. The successful auction follows the sale of 19 Panorama Drive, Doonan, which David secured for the highest price recorded in the suburb in the past seven years. The price cannot be revealed just yet, but it looks like David is having a great run with this being his eighth secured contract in the past few weeks.

It’s a mad mad Mad World Band A SEDUCTIVE cocktail of blues, soul, funk and classic rock adds up to one seriously crazy sound that is Brisbane-based, Mad World Band. Each member of the seven-piece band brings a wealth of skill and experience to their performance with the overall result being a tight sound full of attitude and soul. Mad World Band’s energetic live shows means their performance will stay in your mind long after you have put your dancing shoes back in the wardrobe. Bruce Bird on lead vocals and harmonica has a distinctive style in the manner of Joe Cocker, while Shae Mourtzakis and Gillian Enright on vocals and percussion add their soulful tone and flair to the performance. Steve Turner on lead and rhythm guitar is a dynamic blues player able to interpret rock and blues classics in a new and interesting way and Paul Maloney on bass and vocals provides a powerful rhythm section with tones of funk and groove blended into rock and blues interpretations. Mark Lewis keeps the rhythm section tight with toe-tapping drums and percussion, and classically trained pianist Paul Rae adds yet another dimension on keyboards. The band now features a tribute to Joe Cocker and The Commitments as well as covering a number of other big name influential artists including Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Blues Brothers, U2 and many more. You can catch the Mad World Band for only $10 at the Tewantin Noosa RSL on 30 May, from 8pm. Phone 5447 1766 for tickets, dinner and courtesy bus reservations.

including the Comedy Channel’s Stand-up Australia. After what some may call a late start at the age of 36, Bennett pins his success on being young at heart and having a desire to never grow up. But the laughs don’t stop there, with Nick Jones and one of Australia’s rising comedic stars Damien Power, supporting the main act. Power has enjoyed sold out shows around Australia and was selected by the Melbourne Inter-
national Comedy Festival to perform in their exclusive showcase of emerging comedians, The Comedy Zone. Last, but not least, Jones will leave you all laughed out with his punchy, energetic array of twisted punch lines and hilarious observations. Jones’s three-year stint as host of the In Stitches comedy segment of Chaos TV had him working alongside guests such as Rove and Wil Anderson.

A last resort THE Aguas Azule Beach Resort was probably one of the finest in the Caribbean when it was opened by Fidel Castro in 1977. Looking at the vast pool complex from our first floor balcony, it is easy to imagine Red Army generals puffing on stogies and sunning themselves while their dusky companions performed sultry salsas on the dance floor in front of the bar. But the generals have gone now, and the pools are empty, save for a scummy pond in the deep corner of the lap pool. The tiles are cracked or missing, the gardens are overrun with weeds, and clumps of grass grow between the concrete slabs. The good news is that there is another pool complex on the other side of the hotel, but the water is tepid and rather murky, and the bar snacks are inedible. The place to be is the glorious long strip of white sand beach and impossibly blue ocean, but to get to it we have to negotiate the brown slime canal. The canal may have been Fidel’s big idea, who knows? It is meant to depict native life on Cuba before the conquistadors, the Miami pimps or the Russians came. Its forbidding mud stretches from the main part of the hotel past abandoned shops, basketball courts and concrete squares, empty bungalows and shells of cafes. In the middle of the slime, at discreet intervals, are concrete sculptures of fishermen and hunters going about their business, watched by gorgeous maidens sitting on rocks, rather like an R-rated version of It’s A Small World. This was never high art, but now it’s just plain hideous. But we like it here on the Varadero strip, 20 kilometres of beautiful beach, from which most of the trashy hotel development is screened by a line of coastal shrubs that remind me of Noosa Woods. There is no surf to speak of, but there are plenty of deck chairs and the bar under the trees has cold beer, and it’s free. Well, it’s not exactly free, but the Aguas Azule is one of those delightful “prix complet” places that always bring out the best in people. You buy
The brown canal at Aguas Azule. the next night the dancers were pretty good. “Michael Jackson tribute night is the one,” said our Canadian cigar smuggling friend. Damn, we’ll be gone. And the free bars, these are a wonder to behold. In different parts of the world, every year the marketing departments of major liquor com-
panies make horrendous mistakes in their judgement of the public palate. Licorice-flavoured beer, avocado cider, mustard daquiris, all of these aberrations disappear from bottle shop shelves very quickly, and hotels like Aguas Azule are where they find a home in massive job lots at cost price. Displayed along the bar tops of this resort are just about every alcoholic beverage you never wanted to try. But we paid the money, so try we must. Garcon, another two of those purple drinks, and don’t spare the paper umbrellas! Tomorrow the bus will come to take us away. I think I can make it.

LIFE OF BRINE
your vacation, a bus picks you up and deposits you, and then you never reach for your wallet until the bus takes you back to the real world. Guantanamo Bay is at the other end of the island, but I imagine it’s a similar setup, although the only torture here is the band that accompanies dinner. There are more than 400 rooms and bungalows at Aguas Azule, but there are only about 50 of us in residence, mostly jolly Canadians who can fly direct in a few hours from Toronto on cheap tickets. One guy we shared a dinner table with told us he makes six trips a year, financed by smuggling Havana cigars in his luggage. That’s what I like about Canadians, they don’t hold back. “Three star hotels are the only way to go in Cuba,” he advised us. “You meet the real people.” Chilling on Varadero How Aguas Beach. Azule ever got three stars I’ll never know. There is a huge terrace outside the dining room, but there are so few guests that it has been closed off and turned over to a couple of thousand feral cats. If incoming guests dally too long at the door, 30 or 50 of the scrawny little buggers will dart in and jump all over the bain maries. There is no wi-fi at the Aguas Azule. When I asked at check in, a tight-lipped blonde told me: “There is no wee fee anywhere on the Varadero peninsula.” Well, in fact, they have it at the luxury hotel next door, but when I tried to buy a card, they threw me out. I gather there is a bit of a pong about Aguas Azule low-life guests. I was reduced to maintaining contact with the outside world through the hotel’s only public computer in a corner of the souvenir shop, on something that reminded me of 1995 dial-up. But let’s not dwell on the negatives. Did I mention the nightly live show? We skipped out five minutes into “Audience involvement night” but

Thai art is a balancing act By JONATHON HOWARD RENOWNED Noosa artist and tutor Marilyn Spencer returned home from Thailand recently after she completed her latest artwork near Chiang Mai. She was given two weeks to complete a commissioned mural for a spiritual and healing retreat. “Balancing on a ladder with rocks under for support was a little tricky, but the tranquillity of the water trickling through the surrounding rice paddies and beautiful sunsets over the mountains was worth roughing it,” she said. Ms Spencer was asked to do one mural of around four square metres before the project blew out. “It turned out to be a mural 4x3 metres outside and another inside 1.8mx800mm, and a large dried arrangement - all with no reference,” she said. Slightly husky Organic husk roast corn, cherry tomatoes, fresh basil, raw toasted almond salad Ingredients: 4 corn cobs with husks 250g cherry tomatoes – cut into quarters 200g raw almonds – lightly toasted - roughly chopped 2 spring onions – finely sliced
· · · ·
· half a bunch basil leaves · 30ml olive oil, 5ml red wine vinegar · Sea salt and cracked black
pepper Method: Place corn cobs onto ovenproof tray place in pre-heated oven at 180 cegrees Celsius for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from oven, let cool. When cool enough, peel off outer husk and trim ends of corn for better presentation, cut each into four pieces In a large bowl add cut cherry tomatoes, spring onions, cooled roasted raw al-
monds and basil leaves, set aside In another bowl, add red wine vinegar, pinch of sea salt and cracked black pepper, whisk in olive oil to emulsify, drizzle tomato mixture with dressing, lightly mix together. Place cut corn onto serving plates, top with tomato, basil, almond mixture, drizzle with extra dressing if required. Chef’s notes: for a smoky finish, corn can be cooked in the husk on the barbecue, also without the husk it can be char-grilled on the barbecue, for extra flavour.

Mixed bag for Noosa Fins By JOE JURISEVIC FANCY footwork and lightning pace set by Gus and Rory kept tries flowing. George was fierce with his tagging and outstanding defending throughout the game. Sheer determination from Brendon with ball in hand along with Phoenix’s continued improvement helped keep SCG from making progress. Myles was consistently showing eyes on the ball and made some good tags to boot. Julian was rewarded for his spectacular passing by scoring his first try for the season. Domino’s Pizza Man of the match went to Julian Mason.

Masters in the swim By TONY FROST SATURDAY 7 May, Noosa Masters Swim Club hosted their annual swim meet at the Noosa Aquatic Centre. With several swimmers in “recovery mode” following last month’s Australian masters championships in Rockhampton, 157 competitors still backed up, knowing Noosa’s reputation for a great day. A total of 26 clubs were represented, 12 from Brisbane’s metropolitan region and 14 from country Queensland, New South Wales and Tasmania: Gladstone, Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, Maryborough, South Burnett, Toowoomba, Gold Coast ( Miami and Twin Towns), Northern NSW (Clarence River) and Hobart. Splash and speed contributed to a level of competition, producing world, national and state records. A carnival renowned for opportunities, seven Down syndrome swimmers represented their masters swim clubs: Jana Clancy and Clinton Stanley (Noosa), Ross Hughes,Colin Marks and Matthew Walker (Nud-
gee), Nicholas O’Regan (Redcliffe), and Zac Telfer (Yeronga). Colin Marks broke world Down syndrome records for 400 metres freestyle and 200 metres individual medley events. IT WAS a very close match with both teams putting themselves on the line to push to the try line. The stand out performer for the Fins was Charlie Lambert, who the kids now call ’Fast Charlie’ with four tries and Kane Shedlock, Thomas Russell and Brandon Gesell scoring a try apiece. For the Reds, Daniel O’Shea scored three tries using his speed and step to avoid the opposition, closely followed by the fast moving Max McKerrow who proved he is a threat if there’s any opening. Eli Maclean showed great ball skills and scored one try. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match was Pierce Townsend for his strong defence and attacking support.
U7 Fins 40 d St Andrews Red 35 THE game was very tight with quite a few tries withheld on the try line, but the Noosa Fins remained determined, taking it home by one try. Charlie Lambert kept his ‘Fast Charlie’ title, sprinting down the sideline on a number of occasions to score three tries and Kane Shedlock impressed in his defence and confused his opponents with his Quade Cooper inspired step, scoring two tries. Other try scorers included Thomas Russell two tries and Max McKerrow one try. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match was Max McKerrow for his excellent attack and fast pace.
U8 Whites 35 d Noosa Fins 20 TRIES Tyler 2, Taj 2, Oliver 1, Louie 2 Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match - Taj Kuruvita.
U9 Fins 35 d Maroochydore 25 A QUALITY game saw the boys overpower a well-organised Maroochydore outfit. The positional coaching paid off with Noosa winning most of the contested ball, led brilliantly by Josh. Strong running from Sam saw him cross for two tries as did Leif and one each to Reggie, Josh and Hunter. An excellent game was also had by Max with one particularly strong effort where he beat a number of defenders. Domino’s Pizza Player of The Match - Josh Kendall.
U9 Reds 65 d Flinders 30 ANOTHER great performance by the boys, coming from behind in a very physical match. The boys didn’t back down for one second always putting a lot of pressure in the break down, causing the turn overs and going for the try line. Try scorers were Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match Kye with four, Jackson, Andrew and Fletcher with two each and Tane, Oliver and Bailey with one apiece.
U10 Maroochydore 29 d Noosa 20
THE Under-7s put on a sterling display of rugby on Saturday, with Jack Dudgeon scoring an impressive three tries, Daniel O’Shea following up with two of his own, and Max McKerrow, Thomas Russell, Brandon Gesell and Kane Shedlock all scoring one try each. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match was Oliver Brennan who showed his commitment coming back on the field after a knock to his mouth.
BEFORE the last play of the game, only two points separated the teams and the result was still up for grabs. The Fins came to within one metre from sealing victory with the Swans pinned down at their try line, but Noosa couldn’t quite finish it off and a breakaway try sealed it for the opposition. Soren Manssen, Ashton Hart and Ashton Clark showed great talent and commitment, but it was James Gelling with outstanding tackling throughout the game who was ajudged the Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match. Try scorers: Lockie Dudgeon (2), Jarrah Charlesworth (2)

BOTH teams really did put their bodies on the line. There was pride at stake in the local derby. Noosa Red raced to a two-try lead before the Blue machine reached full throttle. Each team tried to tackle the other into submission, and for the Blues Oskar, Joey and Jude (captain) really got up to the line quickly. Hammish and Hunter contributed with some heavy tackling and ball carrying while Tex used his muscle at the breakdown. Zay took one for the team as did Pearl, but both played outstanding games. Atticus ruled the free play and punished the opposition for loose play. Oskar earned his first Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match while Pearl got the coaches award.
LED by captain Tom Payne with three tries and two conversions, the whole team followed. It was the classic arm wrestle rugby game with the scoreboard fluctuating constantly. With a Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match performance in attack and defence, Yvahn Allsworth showed all his rugby class today. Recent Rugby League representative convert, Jordan Sylvester demonstrated he has a bright future in the 15-man code scoring a five-pointer. The Sonny Payne, Spirit of Rugby award was presented to Harry Langbridge. It was a stellar display from the newly crowned backrower with numerous tackles, turnovers and topped off with scoring a try. Tries - Tom Payne (3), Jordan Sylvester (1), Harry Langbridge (1). Conversions Tom Payne (2).

second. James played solidly, really stepping up in doing the hard work to get the ball out to Oscar who bolted away to score the second of his four for the night. Kaleb can tackle having his best game to date. In the second, the Blues got two tries up and stayed there for the game. Great scrum play by Will had the ball back to James who took it up, played the ball to Joch, back to Mack to score. Remy had a barnstorming run that took half of the Blues to stop. Domino’s Pizza Player of the match was Finnbar who played an all round game with awesome tackling.
DYNAMIC duo Mack and Joch sprung into action with a strip then shot it to Joch who took off before passing to Finnbar to score a great forwards try. A big start from Will taking the ball up, running straight had the side in attack again. Great ball security from Remy and James delivered the ball to Oscar who shot away to score the
U14 SCGS 12 d Noosa 5 A GOOD wake-up call for the boys. The game started well with forwards dominating, but the side soon lost structure, allowing Grammar to get on top. Try scored by Jed. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match - Jesse Russell.

NOOSA TEWANTIN THE final of the club Ladies’ A-Grade Singles championship was played on Thursday and proved an interesting game. Pat Digby and Pam Wald played good bowls to win through to the final. The match was even in the early stages but Pam dropped 11 shots in three ends in the final stages and could not recover. Both bowlers played a high standard with Pat eventually winning the 2014 title.

THIS week was the final qualifying round for the semis and despite the fact that the top four teams were virtually decided it was still vital to achieve the highest position on the ladder to gain the best advantage in the playoffs. Bandits (K. McDonald, O. Estraviz, J. Campbell, J. Mikkelson) 9 d Gamblers (B. Blakemore, T. Latimer, T. Reeves, W. Byrne) 6. Although not regarded as a powerhouse the Bandits will offer some tough resistance in the finals. Wizards (R. Wheller, B. Trauer, S. Campbell, R. Byrne) 8 d Windmills (A. Munro, C. Galea, B. Muller, M. Duncan) 7. Finally a win for the Wizards albeit against a team minus their highly competitive captain Sbig! Blizzard (B. Brown, M. Clarke, J. Murphy, R. Yao) 9 d Axemen (R. Gore, C. Barry, D. Brown, L. Gore) 6. It was all eyes on the captain’s clash with Bill and Roger both undefeated and playing for individual honours. It was close initially with the first two games shared by 13/11 score lines, however Bill seem to step up a notch to ultimately secure the trophy in four sets. Competition night is Wednesday from 7pm and the club has a practise session on Monday nights from 7.15pm. Social groups meet three afternoons a week. Please call 5474 5526 for more information.

Awards mark surfing milestone BETWEEN THE FLAGS RON LANE
IT WAS way back in the year 1962 that a group of lifesavers, formerly members of the Coolum Beach Beach SLSC, gathered together to start the first surf lifesaving club at Peregian. In those days, Peregian was a small community and visitors to the beach only came on occasions. The clubbies persevered until 1974 when the small wooden club house, situated close to the beach was destroyed by a cyclone. However, in 1984 the matter of a surf club in the now fast growing community was again addressed; the club was reformed and the rest is now history. This year the members of the club gathered at their Supporter Club to celebrate the 30th annual dinner and presentation of awards. With a Hollywood theme setting the atmosphere and one of the biggest attendances ever recorded, the evening was an outstanding success. Under the control of organiser Rod “Rocket” Witham and a group of cadets, club mates and guests were treated to a well decorated presentation of awards and floor show. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of club Life Membership to Roy Wood. “I was deeply honoured to receive this high award from the club,” Wood said. “In particular when I think of some of the other members such as Paul Jones and Keith Ronson, who
also hold this award, I feel privileged to be in their company”. Roy started his career in 1998 when along with his wife Jenny, they would conduct raffles on a Wednesday evening to help with fund- raising. Then in 2002, he joined the patrol roster as a radio operator and in this capacity has now logged up nearly 500 hours.
“
This is our highest honour and Roy’s loyalty and work down through the years shows it is well deserved. Brett Leckie
From 2003-’06, he worked as club house director and from 2006-2012 held office as president of the Supporter Club. Also during the years 20082012 he doubled as secretary of the Surf Life Saving Club and for the last two years held office as vice -president Supporters Club. Speaking on behalf of the club, president Brett Leckie said, “This is our highest honour and Roy’s loyalty and work down through the years shows it is well deserved. Our heartiest congratulations to Roy.” Among the many awards presented
on the evening, the majors were as followers: Club Person Brett Leckie, Supporter of the Year Paul Jones, Best Junior Lifesaver Male, Jake Bartholomew, Best Female Genevieve Kane, Best Patrol Captain Tracy Sjogren, Best Patrol, Patrol 8, and Best Senior Lifesaver Simon Williams. In the Rookie Awards, the senior was Martene Renzulli and the cadets were Tom Du Toit and Abbey Whittaker. As these awards are considered to be among the most prestigious in all surf clubs throughout Australia, we extend our sincere congratulations. On the weekend I.R.B. Teams (Inflatable Rescue Boats) from 22 clubs assembled on Noosa’s Main Beach on Saturday and Coolum Beach on Sunday, for two days of racing. With some 300 lifesavers in attendance, the weekend was indeed a success. For the Noosa teams which were this season reformed after several seasons of inactivity, it was indeed successful with several teams reaching finals and semifinals. So impressed were the organisers that next winter we may see the entire carnival at Noosa. Noosa’s reemergence in this type of competition comes as a result of the increasing demand for courtesy IRB patrols in the Noosa, North Shore and National Park area. The experience they gain as a result of competition, provide lifesavers with the necessary skills required to handle any situation in all types of surf, from the small to the very dangerous. Also a carnival such as this helps bring business into our community.

No shortage of netball THE netball season is underway with lots of local action from both the indoor and outdoor winter competitions. Monday night was the grand finals of the Season One indoor competition, where the Radox’s 38 defeated the Knights 36 in a close Division 1 game, the RNB’s 39 took out the Phantoms 16 in Division 2, By The Rules 22 scraped in for a win over the Wildcats 17 for Division 3, and Rebels 31 defeated the Angels 24 for Division 4. Season Two indoor competition sign-on is set for 14 July. The winter outdoor season is now in its sixth week of fixtures, the very junior Net Set Go players aged 5 to 9 years are learning news skills every week and the association is planning a junior club carnival for 20 July. July will also be sign on for Season
Two indoor and the outdoor Thursday night competitions. Plenty of opportunity for everyone. In the meantime, Noosa Netball’s rep teams continue to attend carnivals. There has been great improvement in their game skills, team spirit and competitiveness. The most recent carnival was at Pine Rivers and they have already competed at the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane Netball Associations. The all-day events keep the teams on the go -usually playing six games each. Training began back in February and the rep season will continue through July with more events. The season will wrap up after the 12 years compete in their three-day Challenge Carnival in July and the 16 years compete in the two-day Sunshine Carnival in Rockhampton.

It’s all about team bonding By PETA HOLMES JNR Sea Eagles IT WAS all about fun and team bonding this week for Noosa Gold Under-7s. The side played the very talented Vipers and were defeated 15-0 on their home ground. Bella Hillegers was all class and took home Player of the Match, while Xavier Attard and Reuben Taylor both defended well in goals, but the Vipers’ ball skills proved too much.
The Under-7 Black team were in fine form this week defeating the Nambour Leopards 4-0. The Leopards came out tall and strong but great goalie defenders Sammy Poulton and Jaimen Slavin didn’t let any of them through. Isaac Benjamin had a great game constantly on the ball while Jake MacDonald took home the encouragement award this week, getting into all the play and sticking to the ball and never giving up. Alaska Rosenkranz booted through all four goals, getting some serious air-

terrific home game on Saturday against Palmwoods Jedi but unfortunately lost 4-1. Darcey scored a rocket goal and Kelsey got the Player of the Match. Noosa Under-12 Gold hit their stride this week with a 4-2 win against Nambour Bengal Tigers in a midweek game, following that up with a 3-0 win against Nambour Panther Cats at home on Saturday. The team showed plenty of determination and passion and also how their skills are coming together to achieve a great result. Goals were scored by Jack, Josh, Luke, Callum,
Karter and Flynn over the two games. Mid-fielder Karter McEwen was named Player of the Match. Noosa Gold Under-13s played against the Palmwoods Raiders yesterday at Good Shepard. Although Noosa put up a great defence, they were defeated 3-1. Jake Jenkins scored the goal for Noosa and Lachlan Zigliotto was named player of the week for his efforts in defence. Noosa play at home at Good Shepherd this Saturday, so come on down and support the Eagle kids.

Fiona Winter Realty/ PJ Burns Noosa Tigers’ 2014 senior coach James Gellie returned to the football ield after a 12 month lay with injury to kick 5 goals and be a major inluence 70-odd point win over Nambour, last Saturday. Gellie’s forward pressure and finesse in front of goal was a massive plus for the Tigers who took over half the game to finally shake the tenacity of Sunshine Coast rivals, Nambour, on a beautiful Noosa autumn day in front of a solid pro-Noosa crowd.
In fact, if it wasn’t for two or three very dubious goal umpiring decisions, Gellie could well have finished with a seven or eight goal haul. Of course, with such a substantial victory, Gellie wasn’t the only Noosa Tiger who contributed with South Australian recruit Dillon Dempsey again showing off his precise skill by both hand and foot to be adjudged by most as the best player on the ground. Dempsey’s consistency, and more importantly ability, to continually hit targets further afield is becoming a vital part of the Tiger machine. Along with fellow recruit Jed Mullen who is yet to have a bad game in Noosa colours, the Noosa outfit, particularly with run and carry from defence, is really starting to impose itself.
Jai Fitzpatrick continues to shine across the midfield with his poise and balance with the footy a treat to watch. Inspirational leaders Welsch and Trompf were great performers once again for the Noosa side while Jack Hendrie, Shane Davis, Riley Buntain and Garry Wallace played their part in the victory also. Josh Reichman, with three goals, put in his best display for the Tigers in season 2014 to help Noosa secure the Shane Hunt/ Mark Laing cup proudly donated by the Noosa Heads Surf Club. Both men inspirational leaders of their respective clubs throughout the late 80s and 90s. Noosa now head down the Bruce Highway to face the much improved 4th placed Kedron this weekend in what should be a fantastic battle.
Any complacency by the tigers will quickly be pounced upon by Kedron who no doubt want a big scalp and would love to knock the Tigers out of second position. Well worth the trip as it will be an excellent game of local senior footy. Special mention and thanks again to ex-Collingwood president and 1958 Premiership player Kevin Rose for his role in our 3rd presidents lunch of 2014. A true gentleman and old-school football personality who was enjoyed by all who attended. A massive thanks to Peter Thynne, the Noosa Heads Surf Club, the Richmonds club and all those who helped and keep making these lunches great. Catch you at the footy Go tigers
A successful weekend for junior teams RICHARD MURRIHY U10 The Under 10 Reds had a good game and as Oscar Timm, Flynn Devlin and Harry Kennedy all got on the scoreboard. Harry and Jake got the awards, while Oscar led the team as captain in front of a home crowd. It was a close game, the Maroochydore Skippy’s proving difficult opponents. But, this Noosa team is improving each week, this week learning the importance of sharing the ball and setting up the play. Ethan, who intercepted, took a great grab in the centre kicking it to Rory who handballed to Jacob who was running down the centre, who passed the ball to the forwards to
set up one of our teams goals. U8 The under 8s had some fun with a great team effort. This week’s game was very evenly matched. Luis Brouwer had a strong performance for the whole 4 quarters, while teammates Jason Jordan, Jack Lafferty, Zane Rinaldi, Dakota Smith & Ethan Slaney, also played well. All contributed to the score, with all boys showing improvement each week. Louis and Sam were the award winners this week. U16 The 16s went down to Gympie with: C. Boardman 2, T. Collins , A. Waldron , R. Tarling , A. Thomas , T. Cooney , S. Whitworth all kicking goals. Best Players were R. Collins,

Swell time for action By JO SEARLE OUTRIGGER clubs from as far north as Capricorn Coast and as far south as Ballina recently travelled to Noosa to compete in The Laguna Bay Challenge, an ocean race regatta for six-man outrigger canoes. Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club hosted this final race event for the South Queensland Zone 2013-14 season. Matching previous years, most clubs in the zone had representatives competing, enjoying the ocean and headland course which provides some of the most picturesque and challenging conditions of all regattas in the zone. The weather was kind with a southerly breeze which made the main beach bay calm for the 13 kilometre short course races. This included races for both junior and adult teams, with Noosa Senior Master Mixed crews clinching first and second in their category. For the 22 kilometre long course from main beach, around the Noosa National Park headland and down to Sunrise Beach, the ocean offered
some bumps and swell action which the experienced crews relished. Most of the Noosa crews performed to a high standard, with the Master men in particular putting in a very good time. Results included Master Men first, Senior Master Men second and third, Master Women fourth and Senior Master Women fifth in their respective categories. The swell varied during the day and with low tide in the middle of the regatta, crews found getting out through the surf break challenging and getting back to shore without broaching a test of nerve and character. Getting the junior paddlers to the start line was a particular challenge, but all clubs joined to assist Noosa OCC in escorting young competitors in canoes or IRBs safely through the shore break. This effort resulted in the race program lagging, but as the future of the sport was there to see, the support was tremendous and the long course paddlers who raced later were happy to reduce their race dis-
The Laguna Bay Challenge attracted teams from across the region. tance so the program could finish at a reasonable hour. In hosting the event, Noosa OCC focussed its priorities to promote the sport, supporting the governing body AOCRA and ensuring visiting clubs had a good time with friendly but intense competition. By the response from clubs it seems that NOCC achieved these goals. The food tent provided at the Laguna Challenge is regarded for the quality and variety of the food available, and once again Noosa Outrigger Social Group
maintained its leading edge in both food and service. Noosa OCC wishes to thank the Noosa Coast Guard and the Noosa Yacht Club for providing safety services for this event. Their presence in such visible safety craft was reassuring to all competitors. Anyone who wants to try outrigger canoeing should contact the club secretary Ann Courtnay on 0450 062 026 or at thesecnocc@hotmail. com. Further information is also available at noosaoutriggers.com.au.
PEREGIAN Springs State School has been handed the keys for the latest addition to their facilities - a two-storey, state-of-the-art indoor sports centre. The new addition will mean students can play sports year-round as well as function as an events venue with new audio equipment and a drop-down screen installed. The multi-use facility has an indoor sports space, storerooms, office space, two fully-equipped, air-conditioned classrooms, toilets, showers and a commercial kitchen. The centre has special rubberised sports flooring, as well as acoustics provided by the attractive timber veneer sound lining. The space can accommodate a full, international-sized basketball court and also has capabilities to host badminton, netball, volleyball, tennis and soccer, with basketball nets and posts for other sports automatically adjusted for all age groups. Principal Gwen Sands said she was over the moon to finally have such a fabulous addition to the school. “This facility will be such an enormous benefit to our fast-growing school which has seen numbers climb from 250 students in 2010 to over 800 students currently,” she said. “Our students are extremely lucky. The greater community will also benefit hugely from the centre as we will be able to host events and hire out the centre as a top class sporting venue. “We look forward to welcoming everyone in very soon.” Her excitement almost matched that of sports teacher Cameron Hutchins who has been anxiously watching the progress of the build for the past few months by construction group Broad. The centre will be officially unveiled by the school’s P&C committee at a date yet to be announced.
