NDIS left me helpless MS victim’s nightmare of red tape By NOEL MURPHY GROVEDALE MS sufferer Rob Goodman thought the new National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) would at least preserve the services and assistance she was already receiving. But its red tape jungle removed the support, leaving her distressed, depressed and fearful for her future. “I have no family, partner or carer support but was fortunate to begin receiving support from a state-funded agency here in Geelong in 2002,” Ms Goodman told the Independent. “I was very well cared for and felt a sense of security, which I naively thought would continue until the NDIS trial was set up in Geelong.” Ms Goodman said she lost the support after a raft of meetings to develop an NDIS personal plan left her exhausted and anxious. “I was barely able to comprehend the extent to which my services had been slashed.” Ms Goodman has lost services included respite, massage therapy, gym and swimming pool memberships, household assistance, access to carers, three free meals a week and internet connection for communication with health providers. “But under the NDIS I now receive eight taxi trips a year, even though I’m still able to drive, as well as some help with gardening, an extra hour of home help per fortnight, which I currently don’t require, and three pre-prepared meals a week at a cost of $6, subsidised by NDIS.” Ms Goodman argued “many logical and well-thought-out reasons” against the changes but received a “standard reply” that many of her previous services were outside NDIS guidelines. modated cocky crest. “Bit like a dunny brush but it’ll do the job,” one was heard to say.
THE WORLDS of politics and fantasy collided as a Torquay dad drove a carload of little boys to a laser tag birthday celebration on the weekend. The kids were excitedly discussing the fun ahead when one decided to adopt a character for the session. “I’ll be a ghost,” he declared, inspiring his mates. “I’ll be a monster,” followed another. “I’ll be a Nazi,” said the next. “I’ll be Tony Abbott,” burst out a fourth, much to the dad’s amusement. What, no Clive Palmer?
LAST week’s Indy story on falling local patronage of Avalon Airport elicited plenty of advice from readers. With locals declining from 60 to 20 per cent of Avalon’s Jetstar passengers, the message was unanimous: we’ll return when we can fly to destinations other than just Sydney. To (badly) paraphrase a late ’60s hit, they were leaving on a jet plane but they’re not sure when they’ll be back again.
HATS OFF to the savvy media folks plugging a certain new housing estate on Barwon Heads Rd last week. With Geelong tonsorial tornado Darryn Lyons on site, they grabbed the handiwork of some quickthinking tradies to snap this pic of his cleverly-accom-
AMERICANISMS are just another instalment of the insidious creep of US spelling into our proud tradition of the Queen’s English whereby we make up strict rules only to be the first to break them ourselves in order to keep all and sundry confused. A pair of vans belonging to an electrical contractor parked on Geelong’s waterfront proudly proclaimed services including “fiber optics”. Phonetically correct and makes sense to all their customers yet wrong. Hmm, maybe the Yanks have a point after all.
New student housing project
$10m city plan By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
1113586-EP2-14
A THIRD student housing project has ramped up Geelong’s push for inner-city living. The eight-storey building, with 118 single-bedroom apartments, a retail shop and a cafe, will cost almost $10 million. The 900-square-metre site at 16-19 Bayley St is close to Deakin University’s Waterfront campus, Geelong Railway Station and Gordon Institute of TAFE. An existing building on the site would be demolished to make way for the building. The development proposes
nine ground-floor on-site car parks and seeks a waiver on a planning scheme requirement to provide 158 spaces. A planning application said the development complied with policies including reduced reliance on cars, sustainable transport outcomes and affordable housing. “The proposed development provides limited residential car parking and is proximate to tertiary education centres, public transport nodes and the city centre,” the application said. “It is considered to be in an ideal location for student hous-
ing that promotes residents to use sustainable transport modes as opposed to a private motor vehicle.” Two other student housing projects have also been proposed for the university precinct. A $100 million, 5000-apartment development is earmarked for the corner of Brougham and Cavendish Sts and an $18 million, 15-storey student project is slated for I-7 Malop St. The developers are awaiting a Federal Government decision on whether it will continue a $4.5 billion National Rent Assistance Scheme.

More cops for Geelong By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN EXTRA police have been assigned to Geelong after a protest rally over staff shortages. The reinforcements come as latest crime statistics show soaring rates of drug offences in the region. Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said Commissioner Ken Lay committed five more officers to Geelong after the rally of off-duty police in Johnstone Park last week. Mr Iddles told the rally was “shortchanged by wafer-thin frontline police numbers ... when they need all the support they can get”.
The new crime figures showed drug offences increased almost 40 per cent on the Surf Coast and nearly 23 per cent in Geelong in the past year. Surf Coast recorded 117 drug offences, up from 84, and Geelong had 613, up from 499. Total crime rose 4.6 per cent in the Geelong region and 5.6 per cent on the Surf Coast. Geelong recorded a 32.5 per cent drop in robberies and a 14 per cent decrease in residential burglaries. Surf Coast thefts from cars fell almost 19 per cent after a police campaign reminding drivers to remove
valuables and lock their vehicles. However, thefts of cars jumped more than 19 per cent on Surf Coast. Geelong Inspector Gary Thompson said the latest quarterly crime figures showed crime against the person increasing again despite slowing over the past 12 months. “Family violence assaults and (other) assaults will continue to be targeted. General assaults continue throughout various suburbs and police continue to work with our stakeholders to reduce harm in these areas. “Drug offences are on the rise and this displays the good work provided
by the Divisional Response Unit, High Volume Crime Team and Criminal Investigation Units. “These units continue to be extremely active and significant arrests continue to be made. These units will continue to tackle serious crime groups and illicit drug activity.” Surf Coast Inspector Gary Steel said drugs and family violence were behind most of the increase. “Family violence is a continuing problem and contributes not just to our total assault statistics but other crimes like criminal damage.”
Indy readers send Rosy to Africa for peak challenge By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
Rosy Borland is on her way to Mount Kilimanjaro for UNICEF. 121090 Picture: REG RYAN
MT KILIMANJARO trekker Rosy Borland is off this weekend on her “moment of madness”, climbing Africa’s highest peak. The Hamlyn Heights mother of three has easily raised $4000 to join the UNICEF climb thanks to generous Independent readers. Rosy said the response to the Independent publicising her monster garage sale in February was “amazing”. “So many people saw the article and got in touch and offered to help, so that was really cool, although I’m not sure I’ve inspired anyone to go and climb the mountain,” she laughed. The actual climb would be less easy, Rosy admitted, but she was determined to see the challenge through. “I’m feeling like, ‘Ooh, my God, what have I done?’, at the moment but I’ve prepared all I can and I’m fit as can possibly be. “I’ve got all my gear and I just have to pack my bags.” Rosy will undertake the seven-day ascent of the world’s highest freestanding mountain as part of a group of 25 climbers, accompanied by various guides and porters, walking five to seven hours a day. One of her guides will carry a GPS tracker, allowing supporters to follow Rosy’s progress. More information is available at rosysmtkiliclimb.wordpress.com.
In brief Signs approved THREE electronic signs will shine advertising messages from the top of a building over one of Geelong’s busiest corners. Councillors this week approved the signs, standing up to three metres high and almost 19 metres long above a Telstra shop at the corner of Moorabool and Ryrie Sts.
Deakin freeze A FEES freeze will help students beginning studies at Deakin University this year avoid higher costs from 2016, according to Vice-Chancellor Jane den Hollander. Ms den Hollander said the freeze brought fees into line for all this year’s enrolments regardless of whether they began studies before or after the Federal Government’s 14 May cut-off for avoiding fee hikes.
Food ‘hub’ NEW JOBS could flow from developing an “urban food hub” in Geelong, according to state MP David Koch. The Member for Western Victoria said a statefunded study would investigate the feasibility of establishing the hub to sustain and generate agribusinesses and food industries around the city “to 2030 and beyond”.
Gas hold APPROVALS for onshore gas exploration in the Geelong region are on hold pending community and industry consultations, State Government has announced.

Dole work ‘failure’ for Geelong By NOEL MURPHY NEW WORK for the dole plans targeting Geelong are a proven failure, according to union and Labor figures. Trades Hall secretary Tim Gooden said work for the dole failed under Paul Keating and John Howard. “Our position has always been against it, including under Paul Keating. If there’s real work, if they’re doing real work, they should be paid real wages,” Mr Gooden said.
“They want real jobs and want to be paid real money.” Mr Gooden argued work for the dole was aimed at “picking up the slack” of cuts to funding for church and community projects. Northern Futures jobs training program chief Lour Brazier said work for the dole failed to meet the aspirations of the jobless or the skills requirements of employers. “There are better ways to invest in
helping poor people through education and training pathways that lead to real jobs. “The Government ends up losing money by spending all this money when it doesn’t lead to sustainable jobs - it’s not a way to get youth into the workforce. Evidence shows work for the dole is not a fix.” Member for Corio Richard Marles said the jobless rate increased the last time the Coalition “tried this trick”.
“This is about the government trying to get a good headline - they aren’t helping a single person into a good, stable job. “It’s easier for the Coalition to look tough than actually be tough. They don’t have any new ideas or vision to get unemployed people into work, so they’re just rehashing failed policies.” Liberal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said the Government believed “all Australians capable of
working should be working”. “They should be earning, learning or working for the dole,” she said. “Work for the dole is an important part of the Government’s plan to help young job seekers gain the skills and experience they need to move from welfare to work and make a positive contribution to their local community. “It keeps job seekers engaged and active plus helps avoid a lifetime of welfare dependency.”
Residents fight plans for $100m Lara pesticide plant NDIS nightmare By NOEL MURPHY
From page 1
TWO hundred anxious Lara residents have petitioned City Hall over a new pesticide plant expected to generate 45 jobs and $100 million a year for the local economy. The Accensi plant, with separate sites on McManus and Broderick Rds, is set to open by November in City Hall’s Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct. But Lara Resident Action Group has lashed out at a lack of notification about the chemical plant to 50 households within a kilometre of the site. The group also voiced fears about safety and environment regulations for the project. Spokesman Rob Leonard said residents in the dark about the pesticides to be manufactured feared they might include Paraquat, banned in 32 other countries. “Residents are more than disturbed, they’re up in arms,” Mr Leonard said. “They’re worrying about property values, about their kids’ health, everyone’s health. A chemical plant like this is making Lara feel unsafe to live in. “If it leaks it will go into the water drainage system next door. If it’s airborne it will go over schools.”
She lashed out at the pre-trial slogan, ‘No person with a disability will be worse off under NDIS’. “Clearly this was meaningless political propaganda, which was convincing at the time. “People are screaming. There are some terrible stories and a lot of people are just giving up.” Ms Goodman described the NDIS as a “cynical cost-cutting exercise” imposed on people already disadvantaged. Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said the NDIS Barwon trial would “learn lessons”. “The concerns Ms Goodman has raised are very important in addressing the full NDIS rollout. I’m obviously concerned by issues she’s raised about her own experience ... anyone with a disability has to feel confident the NDIS trial will deliver the very best.” Ms Henderson said she had raised the concerns with the deputy chief of National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), which administers the NDIS, and wanted to meet Ms Goodman. An NDIA spokesperson said the agency “welcomes feedback” from NDIS trial participants. “This feedback is an essential part of our commitment to continuous learning and improvement. Our senior staff are always available to talk with people participating in the scheme and in this instance the NDIA deputy CEO is available to discuss any concerns.” “If a NDIS participant has concerns about their interaction with the National Disability Insurance Agency, we are keen to engage with them and learn from their experiences.”
CHEMICAL FEARS: Lara’s Garry Gillett and Rob Leonard with the petitions against the Accensi plant. 121180 Picture: REG RYAN Mr Leonard released a letter to City Hall from WorkSafe major hazards manager Geoff Cooke, explaning WorkSafe’s opinion that Paraquat “should be classified as very toxic”. However, the letter said Accensi believed Paraquat “should be classified as toxic, meaning the proposed facility would be below the major hazard threshold”.
The petition said the signatories understood they lived next to Industrial 2-zoned land, so they had “an expectation of industrial-type development”. “But it is of deep concern to us that there has been an approval of a chemical plant within 200 to 1000 metres of our properties without any notification.
1137430-CB22-14
“Some of our dwellings/properties are within 200 metres of the proposed development site and still no notification was/has been received.” City Hall planning and tourism general manager Peter Bettess said zoning made Accensi’s site exempt from objection and appeal rights. The Independent was unable to obtain comment from Accensi.

Union slams group for threatening Alcoa jobs By NOEL MURPHY ANTI-ALCOA protesters have been slammed for trying to undermine the livelihood of 83 workers facing the scrapheap at Anglesea’s power station. Australian Workers Union (AWU) attacked Surf Coast Air Action for campaigning against the power station and coal mine. Essential Services Commission last week extended Alcoa’s Anglesea licence, keeping alive hopes the plant and its coal mine might attract a buyer. Alcoa will close the facility if it remains unsold by year’s end.
AWU state secretary Ben Davis accused Surf Coast Air Action of running “an emotional argument” lacking “any science”. “I find it difficult to believe that in these difficult days and times any group would campaign for people to lose their jobs,” he said. “These people will lose their jobs, their livelihoods - their families will be impacted. What have they done to deserve this group running around trying to drive them out of work?” Surf Coast Air Action released a letter from AGL Energy head Michael
Fraser rejecting any plans to buy the power plant and coal mine. The group said it had approached various energy companies it deemed potential buyers, asking them to rule in or out their interest. Mr Fraser’s letter to the group’s Dr Jacinta Morahan said the company only bought assets it could operate “safely and reliably and without compromising the health and wellbeing of employees and local residents”. Dr Morahan said a survey of 250 people, equivalent to 10 per cent of Anglesea’s population, found 82 per
cent support for closing the plant. “There is a groundswell of concern in Anglesea and the Surf Coast about the continued operation of an out-of-date and dangerously-polluting coal mine and coal-fired power station within a kilometre of our primary school and homes,” she said. “Given that it no longer supports jobs at Point Henry, the electricity is not needed. We believe that the health and environmental damage that this power station causes can no longer be justified.”

Historic mayoral robes uncovered at heritage centre Evening Courses SARTORIAL splendour at City Hall’s taken a turn for the, er, louder since Darryn Lyons took up the mayoralty - and here’s the proof. For the first time since amalgamation, Geelong’s mayoral robes - past and present - have been unearthed, dusted off and displayed to the public. Cr Lyons this week posed with six of the historic robes from the City of Greater Geelong and the five former municipalities that merged to create it in 1993. Geelong Heritage Centre’s Mark Beasley said the robes dated to 1902 or earlier. A seventh mayoral robe, Geelong’s first and believed made of bear fur, was too delicate to be displayed for a photograph. Images from the heritage centre’s photographic collection helped indentify the robs, Mr Beasley said. Cr Lyons was intrigued with the robes’ history. “They’re in such great condition and the quality is phenomenal,” he said. “I understand the oldest robe dates back to 1867 and was worn by Mayor Robert de Bruce Johnstone who purchased them to wear when he welcomed Prince Alfred Duke of Edinburgh to Geelong later that year.”

RUNNERS, walkers, indoor and outdoor court shoes, cross trainers - soon they’re a closet full of half-worn sports footwear. They can’t all be worn at once or sometimes at all, so they sit gathering dust. Given Australia’s love of sports, it’s no wonder a truckload of runners sits idle in wardrobes around Geelong’s suburbs. Now a unique charity is accepting donations of clean new and used running shoes for those in need of footwear. Independent eyes keep watch on prison activities
Jail time ‘good for volunteers’ By NOEL MURPHY
Independent prisons visitor Frank Covill.
A day in jail each month might do the average citizen a bit of good, according to Geelong’s Frank Covill. For years he’s been talking with prisoners and prison staff, watching how Barwon Prison runs, observing its programs and reporting his findings back to State Government. As an independent prison visitor (IPV), the former Geelong Grammar boarding schoolmaster, is part of a scheme that he says seeks a realistic, balanced non-political or public-service opinon on prisons. “The IPV has complete access to all parts of the prison and to the prisoners, staff, education and program
providers, contractors and so on,” he said. “IPVs visit their one prison but, with some 40 operating over 14 prisons, an amalgam of their views is a substantial and disinterested picture of what’s really going on.” Department of Justice’s IPV program reports to the Minister for Corrections. Mr Covill said the IPV could “cajole, embarrass, query and occasionally benefit an individual”. “The main benefit is providing the minister with facts laced with a community view on what we see.” Mr Covill said prisoner rehabilitation was “of real concern to all” but
the community should make more effort with children before they reached school age to keep them out of jail. “Once in prison it’s very hard to break out of the mould and it can too easily become a way of life,” he said. “I’ve noticed improvement in the last 15 years, with fewer seeing incarceration as the solution. “There has been a definite movement away from warehousing and toward preparation for life outside the gate. Now there are more programs and a better understanding of why prisoners become recidivists. “Too many people are sent to jail. It would be far better to curtail freedoms and punish in other ways and
save jail for those who might physically harm others.” Mr Covill said many prisoners spoke to him about staff treatment, demands made on them, programs available and the establishment’s lack of respect despite its duty of care for them. The Geelong region hosts two of Victoria’s main prisons. Barwon Prison accommodates up to 423 highrisk and maximum security prisoners, while neighbouring Marngoneet Correctional Centre has 394 medium-security beds. Information about IPV volunteering opportunities is available at justice.vic.gov.au. 1130144-EG20-14
Little Learners Autism Program A new early intervention centre specifically for pre-school aged children with autism spectrum disorder is opening in Geelong. Little Learners Autism Program is a centre-based intervention service designed specifically for children with an autism spectrum disorder aged from 12 months to 6 years old. It provides a highly specialised educational environment, where children receive 20+ hours per week of intervention based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). ABA is an evidence-based technique that has been shown to have tremendous results with individuals who have an autism spectrum disorder. Little Learners Director Karen McKinnon says “There do seem to be pockets where the rate of ASD is higher and Geelong is one of them. However, the research is clear on what to do about it. Early and intense intervention can have lifelong and dramatic results.” Children enrolled in the program will attend four days a week, and will learn via a combination of 1:1 and small group intervention sessions, which focus on increasing skills such as communication, socialisation, play, daily living skills, motor skills, cognitive development and independence, while reducing challenging behaviours. Staff will work with families to develop meaningful goals, which are taught in a systematic, fun and flexible manner. The centre is open so parents can come in and work collaboratively with staff as what happens in the centre needs to continue in the home. Staff are highly trained and have a great understanding of autism and the behavioural techniques available to maximise the progress of each student. The new Geelong centre is the newest member of the Little Learners family with two centres currently operating in Melbourne. Little Learners is eligible for NDIS funding. The centre, located on Bellerine Street, Geelong, will open on 16 June 2014.

‘Fat-tasting ability’ link to obesity Tasting fat could prevent obesity, according to new Geelong researchers. Deakin University health researchers found that people who failed to taste fat were more likely to overeat. Professor Russell Keast said
the study suggested the ability to taste fat was linked to “fullness”. “If you do not taste fat or experience the fullness association with eating fatty good you are likely to be more hungry and consume more energy after an earlier fatty meal,” he said.
“It is becoming clear that our ability to taste fat is a factor in the development of obesity. “Some people have a high sensitivity to the taste and are likely to eat less fatty foods, while others a less sensitive and cannot taste fat and are more likely to overeat fatty foods.”

Letters Toxic threat to Lara GIANT Chinese-owned pesticide company Accensi will immediately begin building a factory on five hectares of land at Lara. Why weren’t nearby residents consulted? Why weren’t environmental and health impact reports made public? Accensi manufactures a wide range of pesticides including Paraquat, which is acutely toxic to humans and banned in 32 countries but not Australia; phenoxy herbicides, containing 2,4-D, which makes up half of the notorious Agent Orange chemical weapon and which is also is banned in much of the world but not Australia; and glyphosate-based products harmful to humans. These pesticides are implicated in cancers including non-Hodgkins lymphoma, infertility, birth defects, hormone disruption in children and neurological damage. What safety measures will be in place and how will by-products and waste be disposed of? What are the contingency plans for any accidents? I’m all for creating jobs and attracting investment to the region but at what cost? I don’t think anyone is interested in jeopardising their health and their children’s health for the sake of a mere 45 jobs. We want a safe environment to live in and a sustainable future for ourselves and the generations to come. Maria French Lara
Memories soldier on
1136929-EG22-14
FOR PEOPLE living in Torquay during the 1940s a sandy track called Cowrie Rd was the northern boundary of the town. The Esplanade stopped at this point and only a rough walking track continued on to Deep Creek. During the war years local people would pick up soldiers who needed transport into Geelong. They also recycled their newspapers and magazines by dropping them off to the men at military headquarters in Grass Tree Park. The little kids, looking for some mischievous fun, would toss pebbles at the sentries on watch at the Cowrie Rd command post. But this was ignored and didn’t generate the desired response. After the war, when the defences were abandoned, the local lads invaded the trenches and explored the command posts. They dismantled sections of wall-lining and used them as rafts to float additional wooden segments back to Fisherman’s Beach.
Restore flights to win back passengers COMMITTEE for Geelong chairman Dan Simmonds wants the Geelong population to support Jetstar at Avalon (Independent, 23 May). That’s okay for going to Sydney but we have to travel to Melbourne Airport to fly anywhere else because Jetstar flights from Avalon to all other destinations have been cancelled. Given the additional costs in time, petrol and, on occasion, overnight accommodation, why should we be expected to still support Jetstar? Why should we stay with an airline that has disadvantaged us just to keep the Sydney route going?
As patronage is down, I imagine that others feel the same. Betty Glasgow Ocean Grove
VOICE FOR AVALON: Committee for Geelong chairman Dan Simmonds wants local flyers to back their airport. I will use Jetstar when it resumes flights from Avalon to the Gold Coast and/or Brisbane, where I have family, otherwise I will pick the best option.
The timber was then pressed into service as fences around backyard vegetable gardens. The fences formed an extra line of defence against the invading rabbit hordes, giving some protection against the marauders that managed to evade the frontline rabbit traps. The trenches subsequently collapsed and were lost to history but memories still remain. Melva Stott Anglesea
Celebrate women on council SUPPORTERS of women’s political equality and local democracy should not miss Geelong’s centenary celebration of women’s right to stand for Victorian council elections from 10am to midday on 4 June at Courthouse Arts, 60 Little Malop St, Geelong. In 1863 women, together with criminals, bankrupts and the insane, were barred as council candidates. Today 34 per cent of councillors are women. Gender-equity campaigns are planned for the lead-up to 2016 council elections. Geelong Regional Library Corporation will host Geelong’s centenary event, Victoria’s first, which will feature a dynamic panel of mayors, councillors and candidates, with a keynote address from former
WHY CAN’T Jetstar have flights from Avalon to other Australian capital cities instead of Sydney alone? Many people have to travel to Tullamarine for flights to Tasmania and other destinations then catch a Gull bus back to Geelong. Surely adding other destinations would boost Jetstar’s patronage, make better use of the airport and cut travel time for we Geelong people. L Saliba Leopold
state minister and Collingwood councillor Caroline Hogg. Hearing Women’s Voices is free but bookings are advised for this important historical celebration. Jennifer Wills Women in Local Democracy Geelong convenor
Helping handouts THOSE who will receive help for tertiary educational studies should be so grateful that when they earn a salary they gladly return the favour by helping the Federal Government reduce Labor’s massive debt and get this country back on its feet. They should start being responsible adults and contribute, not expect everything to be handed to them on a platter. Chris Dengler Norlane
Pension plenty THE AUSTRALIAN age pension is the most generous in the Southern Hemisphere yet some citizens claim it is “inadequate”. The age pension is $800-plus a fortnight for a single person or $1200 a fortnight for a couple.
Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au PO Box 407, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799
Plus, it comes with a myriad of other benefits including heavily taxpayer-subsidised medical and hospital care and rental assistance if required. I am immensely grateful for what I receive. More than half the world lives on less than $2 a day, or $28 a fortnight. Those who complain the age pension is inadequate are governed by greed, not need. Michael J Gamble Belmont
Bring back circuses OVER the years I have been a big fan of circuses but have now found out that City of Greater Geelong will not allow them to set up on council grounds. I think this is not fair to the people of Geelong. In six weeks I will turn 60 and would like to be able to share it with a circus in Geelong but council has made it hard for me to do so in my home town. I will instead see a circus on my birthday nearby to where I will go bowling in Melbourne on the day. I think it’s mad that circuses can’t show on council grounds. The City should have a look at itself. Some years ago we had the Moscow circus in Geelong but if the City won’t let circuses set up in Geelong we will miss out on attractions like this. Brian Porter South Geelong

On his now much- cushioned throne,Sir Spendalot doth ruminate, “Any publicity is good publicity, on that we must cogitate.” His courtly advisers and merry councilors all, Advised Sir Spendalot: next time choose rocking horse, less risk of fall. “I’M A WOG Bill Cosby,” laughs Joe Avati ahead of his solo show at North Geelong next month. Avati’s not so much underscoring his ethnic status as the fact his shows are unlike so many other comedy routines in which hefty doses of profanity are par for the course. In short, swearing’s out. But wog jokes are in. Avati’s not trying to be politically incorrect - maybe - but he doesn’t mean any harm. The wog card is his brand. It’s a brand that carried him around the world, playing stadiums in Canada and the US, although he still flies mostly under the radar in Australia. He said his reputation as “the biggest comedian you’ve never heard of” suited him fine because he could still live life as a normal human being when at home. “Yeah, it’s under-selling yourself but in North America I play sell-out stadium shows and there’s entourages and security and everything. Not being a household name here gives you a break,” Avati said. Not that it’s much of break Avati usually tours nine months of the year as a performer and as a producer. Last year he worked on The Good The Bad and The
Ethnic as well as A Very Woggy Christmas. Avati is returning to Geelong as part of his Back to Basics world tour. “I’ve got a lot of new material in my show and it’s clean,” he promised. “Anyone who works with me knows they have to work clean, that’s been the rule for 15 years, so you can bring your 12-year-olds and you can bring your grandparents. “There’s no politics, I don’t touch sex or politics or anything that will offend. It’s clean, family humour.” Avati’s focus is the lighter side of life as an Australian-Italian. He pokes fun at his parents and friends and recalls bizarre incidents growing up across two cultures. “Normally I don’t tell jokes exactly, I just tell stories. I talk about my upbringing and everyday stories. “I address things like the internet and how times are changing with things like Facebook.” Avati mixes his degree in food science with his comic nouse as a co-host of SBS TV’s Food Investigators, which has been sold to more than 40 countries. Avati plays Capri Receptions on 4 July.

Leo and mates in Good Times MUSIC legends Joe Camilleri, Richard Clapton, Russell Morris and Leo Sayer will join forces on stage in Geelong this weekend. The four music icons have come together for an APIA Good Times Tour, concluding at Geelong’s waterfront Costa Hall this Saturday. Englishman Sayer, who’s series of international hits in the ‘70s included Long Tall Glasses and You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, said the Good Times tour had been living up to its name.
“It’s a party every night. It goes bananas,” he told the Independent. Sayer said the four stars had become close friends despite never previously playing together. “Sometimes you can be lumped in with other artists and someone feels like they should be the headliner but we’re all evenstevens about it and we’re happy to just be working together.” Sayer said each performer sung some of their hits, such as Camilleri with Hit and Run, Clapton with Girls on the Avenue

and Morris with The Real Thing. They then joined forces for the show’s finale, he said. “Everyone up there’s proving that we’re still as alive as ever, even at our age.” Sayer hinted the tour’s Geelong finale might not mark the end of the foursome performing together. “I think we’re going to do some more stuff - it’s sounding that good,” he said. “We might even get in the studio together, maybe Day on the Green or something - I hope so.”

Geelong RSL’s winning fans GEELONG RSL is fast becoming one of the most popular and patronised venues in the region. Steak night on Tuesdays, parmi and pot nights on Wednesdays, thumping president’s draw raffles on Fridays, regular mass giveaways on Mondays - something’s always happening. Chief chef and functions manager David Harper says the RSL is pumping. The 200-seat main bistro, 110-seat function room, kids’ playground, board rooms and dinner-and-show events are all drawing members and newcomers in droves. “We do the steak nights and parmi and pot nights for $13 a head,” David says. “On Thursday we have members night where they can win up to $500 in the raffle. You just have to take ticket as you enter and you’re in it. “On Friday there’s the presidents draw. If you’re in attendance you can win, if not then the prizes jackpot - we’ve had it up to $5000.” David says the function room holds 110 for sit-down events and 150 for fingerfood-style meetings. “We’re well-suited for private meetings and corporate functions

and conferences. We also have a couple of boardrooms, 16 and eight people apiece and they’ve been going off. “With our new projectors and tables, we’ve really stepped the game up. I’ve been here six years and it’s really progressed.” David says the RSL is breaking down perceptions it’s a seniors-only venue but they haven’t been forgotten either, with daily specials and a la carte dishes available.
“We do lot of meal-and-show nights, too. The next will be on 14 June, the Ultimate Bee Gees Show. Then we’ll have Christmnas in July on the 12th with the band Rock Around the World. “A meal and show costs $45 and it’s $25 for the show only. For members it’s $5 cheaper. The RSL’s $10 social membership offers numerous benefits, such as cheaper meals, drinks, functions and more.

LOW-IMPACT collisions typical in shopping centre car parks are annoying to say the least. Add to this the fact that people rarely own up to damaging other people’s cars. It has been noticed that drivers are often scared to back-up any further due to very limited vision. These are the occasions where reverse sensors are very welcome. Bumper Master fits reversing sensors to help customers overcome fears of backing into objects or even pedestrians. Reversing sensors help prevent damage to owners’ cars as well as the vehicles of neighbours and other motorists. They can also help when backing out of tight garages and past narrow gateposts. Bumper Master can also help owners improve the appearance of bumpers when selling vehicles. Bumpers are the first part of any car to incur damage – and first impressions are important when trying to sell. All Bumper Master repairs come with a no-questions-asked warranty to give customers peace of mind. Best of all, most bumper repairs are done for less than the cost of insurance excesses. Located behind VicRoads at 3 Dowsett St, South Geelong, Bumper Master has proven experience in providing an alternative repair service to the bumper regions of any car. Owners wanting to improve the resale value of their cars should phone Bumper Master on 5221 0138.

Vinyl planks offer a timber look but come in a range of different size strips, simply butting up against each other to create a timber-look floor from hard wearing vinyl. “The great thing is if you damage one vinyl plank, you only replace one instead of having to replace a whole section of vinyl. People are very happy with the system because it’s such low maintenance,” Peter says.

eware carbon monoxide – it is a silent killer. A warning to homeowners who have gas heating regarding the dangers of carbon monoxide. It is a poison you can’t smell or taste but can be given off by your heater without you even knowing it. There have been a number of deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning in Victoria in the last few years. Energy Safe Victoria is aware of countless near misses where people have nearly died from carbon monoxide poisoning. It is mainly faulty or unserviced gas heaters which can cause carbon monoxide to be produced. Energy Safe Victoria and the Plumbing Industry Commission recommend that gas heating be serviced by a licensed or registered gasfitter before the start of winter. Gasfitters who service the appliance must have a carbon monoxide analyser/detector that has

$10,443 can be fitted as extras. Should a crash still occur, the Mazda3 has six airbags and whiplash-reducing front headrests. The stretched body has created more rear seat legroom, with a reshaping of the front seatbacks giving added knee room. The base of the A-pillars have been repositioned rearwards to significantly improve the driver’s view, particularly when cornering on twisty roads. The large outside mirrors are set further rearwards than before to also improve forward vision. A downside is that I found myself having to move my head to use the driver’s side mirror, rather than relying on peripheral vision. The instrument cluster in the topline Mazda3 models has a single large gauge for the tachometer. It’s flanked by a pair of smaller digital displays, one of them showing a digital speedometer. We’ve driven both instrument types in recent weeks and can’t say we have a strong preference either way. We aren’t sure why the designers chose to hide the push-button starter behind the windscreen wiper stalk, perhaps they simply ran out of room on the dashboard. We like the on-road feel of the new Mazda3.
Its stronger body gives a feeling that’s almost European in its rigidity. Road grip is high and the feedback through the steering is nicely weighted. The engine is responsive and has a sporty feeling that’s in keeping with the heritage of the company. Fuel consumption in daily driving is usually in the seven to nine litres per 100 kilometres range. On motorways and easy country roads this can come below six litres if the driver puts their attention into getting the best from the car. The previous Mazda3 was an impressive small-medium car that was loved by many Australian buyers to the extent that it managed to top the overall sales charts in 2011 and 2012. This all-new model has been improved in every area and seems likely to put up a big fight in the sales race against the new Toyota Corolla - the car that took top spot on the podium from Mazda3 in 2013. Model range From the Neo 2.0-litre petrol fivedoor hatch: $20,490 (manual), $22,490 (automatic) to the SP25 Astina 2.5-litre petrol four-door sedan: $36,190 (manual), $38,190 (automatic).

WE recently reported on the sporty version of the new Mazda3, the SP25, which was covered by Derek Ogden. Now we have come down a notch to the Mazda3 with the 2.0-litre engine, not the big 2.5 unit fitted to the SP25. Australians buy an amazing one tenth of all Mazda3s sold globally so it’s certainly worth reporting on the car again. The big-grille that’s such a feature of Mazda’s latest styling theme plays a major part in its sales success on every model on which it’s used. The all-new Mazda3 is the best iteration yet of this interesting style, at least in my humble opinion. While it’s lower than its predecessors, the third generation Mazda3 is longer overall and in its wheelbase which gives it a sportier look and more interior space. The sleek new body not only looks good but also provides best-in-class coefficient of drag, at 0.28 for the hatch and 0.26 in the sedan. It’s not just the body’s shape, there is also an ‘active’ radiator grille shutter that opens just enough to provide maximum cooling no matter what the outside air temperature. Body rigidity has been improved by 30 per cent compared to the superseded Mazda3, yet weight has been reduced by up to 70kg. That’s thanks to the new computer-aided body design and the use of high tensile-strength steels in critical safety areas. Mazda3 is sold with a choice between two engine choices in Australia - a SkyActiv-G 2.0-litre petrol engine and a new SkyActiv-G 2.5-litre petrol engine. The ‘G’ in the title stands for gasoline; a diesel option has just been announced, though these haven’t proven particularly popular in other Mazda passenger cars. Transmissions are six-speed manual and six-speed automatic. Our test car had the manual and we found the shift light and easy. Mazda3 offers lane departure warning, forward obstruction warning, and smart city brake support. Not all items are installed in all models as standard, and some

IndySport Cats get the jumper on bite hosts AFL Indigenous round Waterfront morning action On the Chris Pitman
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
IT WILL be on for young and old when Geelong meets Sydney in a Thursday night game but the long and short of it could decide the outcome. Sydney’s talls have become a focus as they finally strung a few games together, with Geelong’s defensive stocks taking a hit in the head as Tom Lonergan battles to get back from concussion. Geelong will try to ensure the midfield is the main battleground rather than the Swans forward line. With the Cats wearing a uniquely designed jumper for the Indigenous round, coach Chris Scott backed his senior players to take the lead again. “Our senior players in particular love playing against the best, they have a good record against the best, they love the big stage against the best opposition,” Scott said. And two of the shining lights from last week’s victory over North Melbourne will get the chance to sparkle through the midfield again. Jimmy Bartel and James Kelly demonstrated again why they are part of the leading senior core in the competition by driving Geelong back to its contested basics. With the flair of Steve Johnson back fit and refreshed after his week’s holiday, the midfield battle will be on for young and old.
NATIVE STYLE: Matthew Stokes eyes the Cats’ special jumper for this week’s Indigenous round. 121036 One of the young, George HorlinSmith, certainly believes the midfield contests will be crucial. “Tight contest, getting the ball going your way early is really important. We need to make sure that we are clean and hard around the contest,” he said. One of the older, Mathew Stokes, believed the Cats at or near their best
will be able to match Sydney. “They’ve hit some good form the last couple of weeks and we played probably pretty patchy over the last month, so it’s a really good test for us to see exactly where we’re at. We have the utmost respect for Sydney and what they’ve been able to achieve. “It’s going to be a tough game but
Picture: REG RYAN
we feel that if we can play somewhere near our best we can be pretty competitive. “It’s all about improving. I think we took a couple of steps backwards a few weeks ago. “We spoke about that as a team and we improved on Friday night but we can still get a lot better.”
Warriors regain form as Paleka and Luka find goals By JOSIP ZILIC
WARRIOR: Reardo Luka.
NORTH Geelong Warriors has regained form with an emphatic 4-0 win over Whittlesea Ranges at Epping Stadium in National Premier League state football. Ironically, Whittlesea succumbed to the problem plaguing the Warriors’ recently when former North Geelong player Tomislav Trbuhovich was unable to put away early chances. Reardo Luka made Ranges pay at the 15th minute when he and strike partner Mark Paleka broke the defensive line and fed Luka through for the opener. Whittlesea kept the pressure on but Frano Saric returned in goals for North with a terrific performance to deny the hosts several times.
Just before half time the Warriors went two up after a free kick from the right corner made its way through the numbers in the box for Paleka to prod home. Five minutes after the break Whittlesea was dealt a cruel blow when a controversial penalty was paid to North Geelong. Daniel Sotiropoulos looked to have thwarted Robert Zadworny’s advance at goal but the referee saw differently, awarding the penalty and Luka dispatching it to go 3-0 up. Whittlesea ruined any chance of a comeback at the 65th minute when Matthew Iuliano earned a second yellow for arguing with the referee after Zardworny’s yellow card for a foul on him, reducing the hosts to 10 men. With 10 minutes left the Warriors
seized the opportunity for a percentage boost when Nick Jurcic drilled through a low ball for the advancing Luka to easily tap in for his hat-trick. North Geelong coach Ante Skoko was delighted with the win after errors-strewn losses in recent weeks. “When we do the simple things right the rewards come,” he said. This Saturday North Geelong is home at Elcho Park to take on Moreland Zebras, battling its own form issues. Moreland is traditionally a tough unit to break down, with many experienced campaigners on hand. However, the Warriors’ first clean sheet and its pairing of front two Paleka and Luka promise a run of positive results.
AN early start was the key to success for most anglers fishing Geelong’s waterfront over the past week. Dr Chan Chee Keong arrived just before day break Saturday when Australian salmon erupted on the surface in a tightly-packed school. Casting four-inch Turtleback worm soft plastics, he landed multiple fish around 1kg. Other anglers caught pinkie snapper on bait and lures around the old Yarra St Pier area. Daniel Baden ventured out off Ocean Grove where a commotion on the surface caught his eye. Pitching small metal lures into the frenzied water, he pulled salmon, barracouta and pike. Daniel was also amazed to catch a 43cm sweep on a trolled lure. Jan Juc’s surf beach produced school-sized mulloway and salmon on bluebait and pilchards. The last few hours of daylight were most productive. Kevin Bardsley fished off Swan Bay on Saturday where he had little problem catching squid and flathead, one of which reached 51cm. Adam Vander Lught and Troy Janssens spend two fruitless hours searching for tuna off Apollo Bay until they decided to change tactics. Five minutes after deploying Rapala X-Rap 30s they hooked up a 100kg-plus fish. Two hours into the fight and 10kms later they had recovered very little line but then the fish headed for the surface and was eventually boat-side. Unfortunately, the hooks pulled in the ensuing struggle but at least the boys were thrilled to have battled with true trophy fish. Wayne Dobinson travelled to Port Fairy for tuna, finding school fish willing to devour trolled skirted lures. Squid were caught off Clifton Springs. Anglers using size 2.5 Yamashita squid jigs fished slowly over the shallow weed beds had the best results. Anglers such as Aaron Cook caught Chinook salmon of around 1kg at Lake Bullen Merri. Trolling lures such as Daiwa Double Clutch 75s at first light was the best method. Moorabool Reservoir produced brown trout for a lucky few. Michael Evans landed a well-conditioned hen, also on a Daiwa Double Clutch. Rick Wheeler spent a few hours casting the edges of Wurdee Boluc Reservoir on the weekend, catching a redfin over 1kg.
