Surf goes out By JONATHON HOWARD THE shock closure of the Peregian Surf Life Saving Club has left local residents dumbfounded. Fortunately, the Peregian Sunday markets were not expected to be affected by the closure and vital services such as red and yellow flags, will also continue in front of the club. Peregian Surf Club manager Martin Isherwood said he was forced to inform 18 staff members not to come into work on Tuesday 27 May. “It was Monday (26 May) about 7.05pm
The Peregian Surf Life Saving Club has closed down with a re-opening date yet to be announced.
when I received a phone call from Surf Life Saving Queensland that the business would need to close immediately, pending further advice,” he said. Mr Isherwood said he was not at liberty to discuss internal matters about the club, but he speculated that the closure was in relation to a financial audit. “It’s come as a huge shock to our dedicated team,” he said. “We were just getting the ball rolling with a few strong events on the calendar, as well as hiring a new chef, to start getting it right for the community.” Peregian Surf Club president, Brett Leckie, said he was devastated by the decision which came
from Surf Life Saving Queensland (branch) head office based in Mooloolaba. “The club is undergoing an audit and we were asked to close during this time,” he said. “I’d love to be able to set a date as to when the club will re-open, but I can only say that residents should expect to see the club back up and running in the near future.” Noosa Today spoke with several Peregian residents who said they were shocked by the closure. One resident speculated that under the current financial market - “every business was doing it tough”. “It’s a hard market for any business to operate, and maybe the club is feeling the pressure,” the resident, who did not want to be named, said. Peregian Surf Club member, Diane Mahony, said she would like to see the club re-opened. “I think it’s an important part of
our town and, although it needs a bit of updating, I think we need it re-opened,” she said. Peregian local, Anna Thomson, said the club needed a lot more local support. “Maybe the closure will prompt more locals to show their support and visit the club, and maybe even become a member,” she said. Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club was originally formed in 1962 with the help of a few enthusiastic life-savers and T. M. Burke, who paid for the construction of the original clubhouse. The club was the first in Queensland to elect a female president, Gill Woolcock, who stayed in the role for four years. She was instrumental in motivating more women and girls to be actively involved in surf lifesaving. Noosa Today will continue to follow the closure of the Peregian Surf Club and will inquire about a re-opening date - more to come.
Shocked by the closure were Peregian locals and friends, Diane Mahony (left), with her dog Rosie and Anna Thomson, with her dog Polly.
Workers’ wages frozen By JONATHON HOWARD PEREGIAN Beach Surf Life Saving Club employees have had their wages frozen and several have been underpaid following the shock closure of the club. The club was shut down last week pending a financial audit under order of the Surf Life Saving Queensland (branch) head office based in Mooloolaba. Rumours have now been circulating around possible involuntary insolvency of the business which could close the club permanently. The closure would impact the local Peregian community as well as leave 18 employees wondering if they still have jobs. Peregian SLSC manager Martin Isherwood said he was able to get some wages released to employees following a phone call to head office. “I couldn’t find a reasonable justification for freezing wages during an audit of the business,” he said. “So I was able to get some wages released up until closure, however many employees including myself have entitlements owing and it’s uncertain if they will be paid out.” Mr Isherwood said it was a kick in the guts for many employees who had been working hard to put the club back on top. A meeting will take place at the Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club on Friday 6 June, for the sitting committee, Nippers committee and other relevant bodies. The meeting is not open to the public. NOOSA has once again come out ahead of the pack after Sunshine Coast Council passed legislation allowing dogs inside businesses recently. Sunshine Coast Council is now seeking feedback from the community over a proposed change to the local law to match the Queensland Government’s Food Act 2006. Changes to the food law would allow dogs in designated outdoor dining areas - where permitted by the business owner. But Noosa has long been a community that embraces dogs in outdoor areas, as well as retail stores. Shades Cafe at Noosa Junction
is one of many local businesses that invites pooches and their owners to their outdoor areas. Shades owner, Nick Spencer, said customers loved the fact they could bring their dogs, grab a coffee and read the paper. “Noosa residents love their pets and we couldn’t exclude them from our outdoor areas,” he said. Soul Sanctuary owner at Perigian Beach, Nicki Jutbauge, brings her pet toy poddle to work every day. “Our customers love seeing Fred (one-year-old toy poodle) and they like the fact they can bring their dogs inside as well,” she said. “I think it’s great that dogs are allowed into businesses, it’s something Noosa residents enjoy.”

Life drawing: female to male for fun By JOLENE OGLE LOCAL gallery artist Maxine Stibbe is turning her attention from the female to male form, all in the name of good fun. As a mother of two and after a five-year break, Maxine said it was time to get back into the art industry and what better way to make a splash than with life drawing parties. “This is a great way for a group of women to get together and have some fun,” she said. Maxine has been running life drawing parties with a male model in Brisbane and said the classes were always booked out months in advance. “It is just a great vibe and awesome fun,” she said. “The class is perfect for a group of girls to all get together whether it’s for a hen’s party or a birthday party,” she said. “Some people say they can only draw a stick figure, but that’s what I’m here for. I will take them from a stick figure to being able to draw the model’s form.” Maxine has been involved in the local and international art scene since the late 1980s, with her first solo show opened in 2001 by the then Minister for Art, Matt Foley. Since then, Maxine has main-

Asbestos cleared from our kerbside By JONATHON HOWARD ASBESTOS-LADEN items being placed on nature strips for Kerbside Clean Up has prompted a safety message from Noosa Shire Council. A Tinbeerwah resident, who did not want to be named, said he had noticed some questionable items at Tinbeerwah Street on Saturday 17 May. The items included old furniture, signs, wire, several concrete sheets and a pipe believed to contain asbestos. The resident said he approached council with photos and his concerns on Monday 19 May. However, upon seeing children playing around the suspect items, the resident was again spurred into action and contacted council for an update on Friday 23 May. “I phoned Noosa Shire Council to determine what action had been taken regarding the asbestos materials,” he said. The resident said he received the following council response: “The matter has not been attended to yet, but the officer responsible was advised of your original complaint and given the photos you brought into council,” a spokesperson for council said. The issue was made worse when the Tinbeerwah resident said more items had been placed on the nature strip at a different address - again suspected of containing asbestos.
Council has cleared several items on Tinbeerwah Street believed to contain asbestos materials. Council’s manager of Waste and Environmental Health, Wayne Schafer, said the items were carefully collected by council officers and buried at a land fill. “Council takes these matters very seriously, and I think in this case we could have responded to the resident’s concerns sooner,” Mr Schafer said. Mr Schafer said it was important that residents know the risks of placing dangerous items on the nature strip. “It’s a matter of community safety to ensure items that contain dangerous fibres or liquids, such as asbestos or fuel,
are not placed on the street,” he said. Mr Schafer said it was often surprising what people place on the nature strip. “We’ve seen cases of gas bottles and fuel containers - these items are not something council can collect in a garbage compactor,” he said. Kerbside Clean Up will continue this week with a Saturday 7 June, collection at Cooroy and Lake Macdonald, Black Mountain, Cudgerie Estate, Cooroy West, Pomona and Kin Kin (properties with recycling services only).

Nod for new Peregian development given By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA Council has approved a new supermarket development next to the Peregian Beach hotel, and councillors are confident the new development is in line with the community’s wishes. Another developer - Multi Span Australia - has withdrawn its bid to build a shopping centre on a second site in the town - land zoned for community recreation at the site of the old Peregian Beach bowls club. The residential development on the old Peregian Beach caravan park site will now include a 1600-square metre retail complex, including a mid-range supermarket of 950 square metres. The locally-based Scanlon Property group had already received approval by court order in 2010 to develop the site for accommodation, some retail and office space. Of the 37 submissions received, 35 were in favour, including support from the Peregian Beach Community Association and the Peregian Beach Business Association. Thursday night’s (29 May) council meeting in Pomona gave the go-ahead for a supermarket on the site, after council planning officers advised that there was sufficient economic need for it to overcome planning conflicts. Council officers found that the Scanlon development next to the
hotel was likely to complement the village and contribute to it as a new focal point for the community, without harming existing businesses as much as the rival supermarket bid on the old bowls club site. The decision means a replacement supermarket for the existing one approved for redevelopment into a restaurant and offices in the village square. While the approved site is between the Peregian Beach hotel and hardware store, most of the building will be below David Low Way and relatively obscured from the main road. Planning Committee chairman, Councillor Frank Wilkie, said in a press release that there was a stark comparison between the two rival bids for supermarket developments in Peregian Beach. “One was on land zoned for community recreation and would have split the Peregian village into two,” he said. “It galvanised the community in opposition to what they saw as a major threat to their village lifestyle.”He said the approved application was on land already zoned for retail and would replace the convenience store due to be redeveloped. He said the move was supported by Peregian’s business and community groups and was part of the village commercial centre.

Flying-fox facing up to extinction By JONATHON HOWARD
1138271-EU23-14

JUNE 2014
THE debate over flying-fox colonies continues to rage across the Sunshine Coast, as dispersal methods to shift a Coolumbased colony ended last week. Australia’s greatest pollinator has become Australia’s greatest pest in the eyes of many residents, but Flying-fox Rescue Release Noosa secretary Terrie Ridgway said the vital species was facing “functional extinction”. Flying-fox dispersal methods in Coolum included the use of lights and hoses over a period of three weeks at Cassia Wildlife Corridor in Coolum. The non-lethal dispersal actions were in response to community concerns. Sunshine Coast councillor, Stephen Robinson, said determining outcomes from the activity would take time. “There has been a reduction in numbers of flying-fox within the Cassia wildlife corridor as a result of our activities,” he said. “However, as with all flyingfox dispersal actions, there are no guarantees of where the animals will venture to or if they will return.” Cr Robinson said council would continue to monitor flying-fox activity and numbers at the site. “Flying-fox maintain very strong ties to their roost sites for their entire lives, so council will continue to observe movements at Cassia over the coming months,” he said. Ms Ridgway said residents
A rare Grey-headed Flying-fox at Flying-fox Rescue Release Noosa Inc, which is set to be released into the wild in the coming weeks. needed to learn to live with flying-fox or risk losing Australia’s pollinators. “We have to share our planet,” she said. “Flying-fox are vital to our ecosystems, but they’re dying of exhaustion, a lack of food and scarce habitats.” Flying-fox Rescue Release co-ordinator, Jan Davie, said the stigma around flying-fox was unjustified.“Dogs and cats carry more diseases than flyingfox,” she said. “Each time we move them, we find they are becoming more and more confined to small areas and we risk losing these vital creatures forever.” Ms Davie said few dispersal methods were successful. She also praised the Noosa Shire Council for its pro-active approach to flying-fox colonies. “I want to praise Noosa Shire Council for their commit-
ment to no dispersal methods in Noosa - it’s welcome relief to have a council that understands the needs of flying-fox,” she said. Ms Davie also extended an invitation for residents and visitors to visit the Flying-fox Rescue Release shelter at 33 Tronson Road. “We’re always open to teaching people about the importance of Flying-fox and we welcome visitors to the shelter,” she said. The Flying-fox Rescue Release Noosa Inc has released more than 140 flying-fox into the wild with another 100 set to be released soon. The organisation is always looking for support and donations from the community. To find out more about Flying-fox Rescue Release Noosa Inc, or to get involved or donate, phone: (07) 5485 2367.
Caution urged after two accidents By JORDAN CULLEN

POLICE are urging motorists to drive to the conditions after two accidents along EumundiNoosa Road last Thursday. Noosa Heads police officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said driver behaviour was a big contributor to accidents.
“No matter what road you are on, you just have to drive to the conditions,” he said.Sen Sgt McReight said Eumundi-Noosa Road had “never been the best road” but issues such as failure to give way, following too close and wildlife were also contributors to traffic issues. “The big thing is watch what you’re doing, don’t drive
too fast, don’t drive tired, don’t drive full of grog, obey the speed limits and don’t follow too close,” he said. Road user Stuart Jarman said there were a few contributing factors. “Very bumpy and a single lane into Noosa is silly with the amount of traffic that’s on that road,” he said.

Burning across Noosa
By JOLENE OGLE
Biosphere restructure in need of trust By JONATHON HOWARD RESTRUCTURING of the Noosa Biosphere will place the community in the driver’s seat, says Noosa Council, despite several former volunteers of the Biosphere criticising the move. It’s a case of out with the old and in with the new, as the councilowned Noosa Biosphere Limited company finishes later this year. Although several residents have expressed concerns over the loss of the previous committee chair, Sue Davis, who announced her resignation over the restructure, council said building a strong and smart economy that was in harmony with the environment was at the core of the restructure. It will be replaced by a “Trust” and an incorporated “Association” made up of the volunteers who take part in Biosphere projects. Mayor Noel Playford said the
Trust structure was the best custodian for the Noosa community controlling the Biosphere’s assets, planning and reporting. “While the council will initially appoint the five directors of the Trustee Company, vacancies will in future be filled by the board itself, except for one position that will be filled by council,” he said. Council documents said the trust structure was seen as the best way to attract funding to the Biosphere Reserve from grants and donations, including support from council. At the co-ordination level, the new structure will be further removed from the council, with dayto-day operations run by a community-based Association. Deputy mayor, Bob Abbot, ran Noosa Council when the UNESCO Biosphere status was awarded in 2007.
“
NOOSA MP Glen Elmes has described the State Budget as “workman-like” as he warns of a tight budget and asks everyone to “share the burden”. “This is not a budget of benefits for specific community sectors,” Mr Elmes said. “All Queenslanders are being asked to share the burden of getting the state out of the huge hole left by Labor, and this budget will see that task largely achieved.” As the budget was released on Tuesday, Mr Elmes said it was important for the state to go from debt to surplus and said this budget would be the last one in deficit, with the next budget promised to be in surplus. “The budget is responsible and stabilises the state’s financial position to lay the foundation to return to balanced budgets from next year on,” Mr Elmes said. Mr Elmes said some of the highlights for the Noosa region included a share in $8 million of statewide grant funding available for local projects under the Safe Night Out Strategy. Under this budget, an extra $638,000 will be available for non-government organisations to deliver homelessness services, which Mr Elmes described as a major issue in Noosa. A total of $1.47 million will be given to child safety services, with $4.70 million for disability services, and local state schools will receive $811,000 in funding as part of the Great Results Guarantee initiative. A $50,000 upgrade is planned for the changerooms and construction of disability toilets at Chaplin Park, Noosaville, plus $350,000 is set aside to replace visitor amenities and improve canoe and boat access to Fig Tree Point in a bid to stop erosion.
It’s a compromise that strengthens my belief in local democracy. Deputy mayor, Bob Abbot
Cr Abbot said the agreed structure emerged from months of discussion, with input from many of the hard-working volunteers and stakeholders across the community. “It’s a compromise that strengthens my belief in local democracy,” he said. Cr Playford said he was confident most of Noosa would support the community-controlled Biosphere framework that’s now been endorsed. However, Cr Playford said the details around the concept would need to come after even further

community consultation in the months ahead. He said there would be significant funding in the council’s budget 2014/15 to be delivered next month. The funding will focus on clever initiatives and projects that fit Biosphere’s aims. “In the end, what most people tell me they want is to see our ratepayers’ dollars spent wisely on projects that help deliver the Biosphere vision, and that’s a clever economy that sees Noosa prosper while protecting our very special environment and lifestyle,” he said.

QUEENSLAND Parks and Wildlife are preparing for a sweltering summer season by reducing fuel loads across Noosa this week. Burns have been scheduled for the Headland, East Weyba, West Weyba, Emu Swamp and Emu Mountain sections of Noosa National Park, until September 2014, as part of the annual hazard reduction/conservation management program for parks and forests. These burns are being undertaken to help protect life and property in the event of a wildfire. As a result, smoke may be seen in areas surrounding these sections of park. Persons with respiratory or other health problems should seek medical advice on mitigating the effects of smoke inhalation. Strict instructions have been given not to enter the park at the time of the burn and for a period immediately following the burn. The community has been asked to obey closure signs in and around the national park.
Parks and Wildlife carried out a planned burn at Lake Cooroibah Road on Thursday 29 May.

DESIGNER clothes, photo shoots and runway shows are all in a day’s work for local model Mitch Wynne who is making strides in the Sydney fashion scene. Mitch, 21, grew up in the quiet community of Town of Seaside, Marcoola, with his mum, dad and two brothers. “Growing up on the Sunshine Coast was great. I highly recommend it,” he said. “There was always a great community feel and who wouldn’t love living so close to some of the world’s best beaches.” Mitch’s entry into the modelling world was never planned but after a “few people mentioned I should model”, he decided to “give it a go”. Not long after, Mitch followed his dreams and made the move to Sydney after signing with national modelling agency Chadwick, who also manages the likes of international model Jessica Hart and TV and radio personality Jackie O. “I’ve always loved the idea of living in a big city and it’s great that I get to experience it while working in a fun industry,” Mitch said. While the transition from quiet coastal town to the vibrant city was a big change, Mitch has taken to the challenge like a model to the runway. “The thing I love about Sydney is that everything is so convenient - public transport is a level above,” he said. “The downside of living away is that all my family lives back in Queensland. It took a while to get use to but I’ve settled in nicely. It helps only being a short flight away so that I can visit home whenever I get the chance.”
Mitch says the industry looks after him. Picture: JAMES DEMITRI But missing his family hasn’t put a dampener on Mitch’s career, which he said is a dream come true. “It is a very exciting industry and I can hardly call it work. It’s always fun being on a shoot,” he said. “You always get looked after really well. Also, the industry comes with its perks like exclusive parties and events.” Mitch recalled his first major runway show modelling for Ermengildo Zegna, an exclusive Italian menswear company. “The event was amazing,” he said. “There were about 60 male models with an exclusive afterparty where the Temper Trap played and many celebrities attended including Chris Hems-
Mitch followed his dreams. Picture: MICHAEL OMM worth and Megan Gale, who are brand ambassadors.” Photo shoots for brands such as Rebel Sport, David Jones, Cosmopolitan magazine and bridal magazines, as well as runway shows for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and Gucci, are also part of Mitch’s portfolio and the future looks packed full of many more exciting jobs. “The industry can lead to many exciting experiences including worldwide travel and I hope to experience this in the future,” Mitch said.

Busy time after break By JONATHON HOWARD SIX months have passed since Noosa made the historic leap towards de-amalgamation from the Sunshine Coast Shire Council. Establishing Noosa Shire Council was a hard-fought victory and showed the true grit of Noosa’s community when faced with such political adversity. To find out what life in one of Queensland’s busiest electorates has been like for those councillors at the helm, Noosa Today spoke with Cr Sandy Bolton, who provided a unique insight into her role. Noosa Today posed the following questions to Cr Bolton and her answers are provided below: Please note: the views expressed by Cr Bolton are her own and may not reflect the views of other councillors or the council as a whole. Could you please update our readers on your position within council, since taking office almost six months ago? It has been an incredibly busy, educational and fulfilling time, and I am thoroughly enjoying the diversity and challenges that come with a new council. My current “project” is the implementation of an action plan within the adopted Rural Futures
Cr Sandy Bolton with Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss and Sunshine Coast Cr Peter Wellington Strategy, which includes the development of our own “Country Noosa” strategy. As Chair of the Infrastructure and Services Committee, I look forward to building on my community services knowledge as well as gaining a sound understanding of the essential components of our infrastructure including a favourite of councillors nationwide.....roads. In your opinion, how has council been functioning since de-amalgamation? Extremely well. The transition period and thereafter has encountered only minor issues, and considering the enormous undertaking to enable the “rebirth” of Noosa Council, it has been a fabulous effort by a very committed transfer team and council staff. The overload on the phone systems caused some distress to both residents and
staff in the first couple of months, and happily has now been resolved. What areas have you been working in or feel passionately about? The variety of areas I have been working in has been diverse, and I am passionate about all. I have been fortunate that within Rural Futures, I am involved in everything from tourism, sustainable farming, environmental practices, and economic development to social issues, affordable housing options, infrastructure and transport strategies. I recently sat on the regional Think Health panel which gave a much better understanding of the issues we face regarding resident health and lifestyle choices as a community, and I have recently been appointed as the council’s representative to the Council of Mayors
(SEQ) Rural Communities Taskforce. Do you have any concerns you would like to raise, from both a council and community perspective? The Think Health forum highlighted the need for the community to work together to address emerging issues from a holistic approach, understanding the multiple elements that contribute to poor physical and mental health. I believe the council plays an important role through the aspects of sustainable planning and the provision of infrastructure and services that assist organisations to provide active recreation, and that promote good health and wellbeing. Please give us some brief information about your background, interests and personality - this is a chance to engage with residents on a more personal level? I am sure that during the election and since 1 January our community has heard plenty about all of us. However, in a nutshell - a background in business management and community organisations, a love of people and our incredible home, with a personality that friends and family describe as energetic, warm, and tenacious, with a good sense of humour.

Traders rally on parking By JONATHON HOWARD A PETITION signed by 442 business owners and operators is calling on Noosa Council to reconfigure parking at Noosa Junction. The petition was handed in to council during its ordinary meeting held at the Pomona Bowls Club on Thursday 29 May. Councillor Frank Wilkie said the retailers would like to see front-to-kerb angle parking on Sunshine Beach Road, Noosa Junction. Cr Wilkie said a lack of convenient parking was preventing many customers from shopping at the Junction. A total of 22 shops are now empty along Sunshine Beach Road, and the report highlighted several key concerns from Junction traders. “Our proposal is to have two southbound lanes of Sunshine Beach Road as a two-way thoroughfare with the current southbound bus, loading and parking stops remaining in place,” the petition summary said.
“The northbound lanes to be converted into front kerb convenient parking with only the current bus zone near Arcadia Walk remaining in place.” The report also highlighted the need to make Noosa Junction two lanes instead of the current four lanes. “There is no need for four lanes in the Junction - no other shopping precinct in the Noosa area has four lanes, and the roads either side have only two lanes,” the report said. “These businesses are some of the last independent retailers in Noosa, and it would be a shame to lose Noosa’s individuality to chain retailers in every shopping complex.” The report was received by Noosa Council and will be raised for consideration and debate at a later date. Have your say - do you think Noosa Junction should have front-to-kerb angle parking? Send your thoughts to newsdesk@noosatoday.net.au

THE sun was shining, the lines were tight and the banks of the Noosa River were teaming with families and fishermen for the 18th Noosa Riverfest Regatta and Boatshow, last weekend. The Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club (NYRC) played host for the three day event that saw hundreds of locals and visitors make their way to the shore to watch the regatta, ferry race and the fishing competition’s
complete with live aquarium. Sailing manager Paul Blundell said the event was a great initiative for the community with a huge effort made by NYRC and Davo’s Tackle World to ensure a great weekend was had by all. “The weather was kind to us on the weekend as most of Noosa turned out to see all that was happening,” he said.
Paul said the Noosa Riverfest was not to be missed with rowing races, sailing regattas, food stalls, kids fishing clinics and games on offer plus a huge contingent of fishermen both young and old. Winners on the day included Grant Evans who won the senior sailing regatta in ‘Exile’, a Blazer 23 and Caitlin Piepke who took out the juniors with her Sabot, ‘Small Fry’.
There was also plenty of action with the River to Reef Fishing Classic and some great prize fish being caught in all species categories. “The huge viewing tank was a winner with everyone getting a close-up of the various species in the tag and release competition,” Paul said. “Don’t miss out on Riverfest next year!”

Noosa Today printer award By JONATHON HOWARD NEWSPAPER printing experts APN Yandina has received some much deserved recognition for printing Noosa Today, during the annual newspaper print industry awards, known as SWUG. The awards, held in Darwin, are hotly contested by printers from all over Australia. Noosa Today was entered by the APN production team in the “Best Newspaper on Enhanced Stock (over 50gsm SW/DW) - Category 4”. Despite narrowly missing out on
State Member for Noosa Glen Elms has opened the new Albert Street boat ramp with praise and criticism.
the gong, APN Yandina’s printing of Noosa Today was named runner-up. APN Yandina had last year won the award. APN Print Yandina also won the Best Print Quality award in their category for double-width presses, and APN Print Toowoomba was runnerup and third in the two Single-width press categories. The awards recognise the hard work and commitment from APN Yandina team that produce thousands of regional newspapers throughout Queensland on a daily basis.
Mixed reaction to new boat ramp By JONATHON HOWARD THE new Albert Street boat ramp has opened ahead of schedule, but not all Noosa boaties are happy with the results. The boat ramp now offers a double lane drop off and new jetty facility at a cost of $380,656. State Member for Noosa, Glen Elms MP, said the boat ramp was a win for the community and an example of the Newman Government’s commitment to improve marine infrastructure. “As part of the $380,656 project, we’ve rebuilt and widened the boat ramp to current standards and constructed a
floating walkway along the eastern edge of the ramp,” he said. “Floating walkways are a great asset to recreational boat ramps helping reduce congestion and allowing for ease of boat launching especially in busy times.” While the new boat ramp has been praised by several boaties, early complaints have been raised over the jetty’s length. One resident, who did not want to be named, said the jetty sat in shallow water during low tide and only allowed for one or two boats to tie up during high tides. The left side (portside) of the jetty
was also difficult for boaties to tie up as concrete debris has settled on the bottom. Mr Elms said he would look into clearing the concrete debris, but believed the jetty was at the threshold of its maximum length. The boat ramp was funded through the QLD Government’s $50 million Marine Infrastructure Captial and Maintenance Program. Have you used the Albert Street boat ramp? Give us your thoughts by sending an email to newsdesk@noosatoday.net. au
Danny Cavanagh has worked the APN Yandina presses for more than 30 years and his efforts, along with the whole team, were recently recognised.

community Goodwill on the table IT WAS a case of one great community initiative helping another when the Cooroy Community Gardens took delivery of a large picnic table, courtesy of the Sunshine Coast Camphor Laurel Initiative. The picnic table will now form the centerpiece of future working bees and meetings. Cooroy Community Gardens supporters were invited to a thank you morning tea when the table was handed over on 17 May. They included Noosa councillor Tony Wellington, Bendigo Bank Cooroy branch manager Geoff Edwards, Lynne Bonnell from Bonnell Bros and the Camphor Laurel Initiative’s Jeffrey Heilemann. The Camphor Laurel Initiative is a community venture run and operated by volunteers putting the old Cooroy Mill to good use by ridding the district of the unwanted weed and turning the tree into something of use to the community. It has been a big month for the community garden. During the Cooroy Fusion Festival the CCG committee ran a competition for all new members to win a ‘plot for a year’. After signing up on the day, local Cooroy family the Beaumonts were the lucky winners and they were presented with their plot by president Nick Hodgson.

Camp-led recovery By JOLENE OGLE IT was an “uh-huh” moment for Prue and James Woodford, as they sat around their campfire surrounded by natural forest and acres of prime camping space. “We just thought that we have all this land and the caravan park down the road is jam packed, so why not offer our space for campers?” Prue said. Youcamp.com was born, a website that connects travellers with landowners who are willing to offer overnight or short-term camping for a small fee, sometimes as low as $5 per night. NSW-based Prue and James said the “backyard camping” initiative could be a solution to Noosa Council’s continuous battle with illegal camping. “The answer is not to treat backpackers and silver nomads, who are looking for that magic combination of cheap and pretty, as criminals but rather to see them as potential guests and a boon to the local economy,” James said. “Backyard (or private land) camping is part of a revolution sweeping across society and is known as the ‘sharing economy’.” James said Youcamp.com provides landowners with a new and sustainable income and travellers with both an authentic and affordable camping experience, away from big, expensive and often crowded caravan parks.

Family camping for the Woodford family. Anyone with land to offer simply uploads their information and some photos to Youcamp.com and travellers can search for backyard camping sites in the areas they want to explore. Travellers can also search for amenities and allowances to suit their needs, such as pet-friendly properties as well as properties with a hot shower and kitchen. James and Prue said in only a few months, Youcamp.com had already received 100 private property listings throughout south-east QLD and north-east NSW, with a grow-
ing cluster of private land listings around Noosa. James said the modern traveller is seeking an old-fashioned, outdoor experience that offers space, privacy and flexible rules. “They do not want ‘McCamping’ - where every site is the same,” he said. “Landholders who have listed on Youcamp.com close to Noosa allow a huge range of activities on their land from fishing, boating to just peace and quiet and enjoying nature.”

“All that is needed now is for local councils to work out how to take advantage of this new sharing economy and make it work to get illegal campers out of public car parks and streets,” James said. James and Prue’s Youcamp.com has also been chosen as one of four contenders for the national People Power competition being funded by PayPal. A local charity is in desperate need of new undies, with a call for donations to help keep the homeless warm and comfortable this winter. Integrated Family and Youth Services (IFYS) housing support worker Kylie McGlynn said the not-for-profit community organisation was calling for donations to help make life a little easier, and warmer, for the local homeless population. “We are seeking donations of both men’s and women’s underwear or socks of any size or colour and small-sized toiletries,” Kylie said. Kylie said the donation of basics such as underwear and soap would have a big impact on the lives of people who found themselves homeless. “To be able to offer (people) a hot shower, toiletries and some clean clothes can make a huge difference to the morale of someone living on the streets,” she said. The donated goodies will be presented to St Vincent de Paul’s Homelessness Support Program at their annual Community Sleepout being held throughout the Sunshine Coast on 26 June. Kylie said she hoped to receive enough donations to assist the homelessness support program until next year’s Sleepout event. IFYS youth worker Sam Ashton-Martin will be sleeping rough with no more than a cardboard box and sleeping bag for the St Vincent de Paul Sleepout to raise awareness of the growing homeless population. “Living on the street is not a choice, these young people have a lot going on and are often running from trauma, neglect and abuse,” he said. To donate any new underwear, socks or toiletries phone Kylie on 5409 4985 or visit www. ifys.com.au. For more information on the St Vincent de Paul’s Community Sleepout visit www.communitysleepout.org.au, or to donate to Sam’s sleepout visit www.northensleepout.gofundraise.com.au.

Art prize opening the doors
Noosa Regional Gallery director Nina Shadforth checks out one of last year’s entries, “Not Without My Carby”. in remote communities doing woodwork and 3D-model-making. “The prize gave me the opportunity to focus on my work and progress my career as an artist. The prize opened more doors for my practice than I could have imagined.”
A total prize pool of $12,000 is on offer to contemporary artists and designers with a selection of finalists to be chosen from the entries and presented in an exhibition at the Noosa Regional Gallery from 28 August to 5 October, 2014, with the Gala opening
on Friday 29 August at 6pm. The national winner will receive the $7000 award and their work acquired for the Noosa Council art collection, along with two Regional Artist category winners who will be awarded $1500 each.
Once again, the Friends Noosa Regional Gallery will offer the ever-popular People’s Choice award of $1000, along with two Emerging Artist category awards of $500 each for tertiary level students working in 2D and 3D. Noosa Regional Gallery director Nina Shadforth said the Noosa Art Award attracted national attention and aimed to create a national platform for the artistic pursuits of practicing artists and designers in the Noosa, Gympie and wider Sunshine Coast communities, as well as those from around the country. “The national Noosa Art Award is also offering opportunities for local businesses to get involved and partner with the Gallery to build on the award, as well as the upcoming associated gala event and exhibition programs later this year,” Ms Shadforth said. “Additionally, the vision for the award is not only to build on an existing small collection, but to create a unique cultural drawcard for Noosa, (renowned nationally for its cultural activities) that enhances the cultural tourism and to make it an accessible and desirable collection for visitors to Noosa.”

NOOSA Regional Gallery is reminding local artists and designers that entries to the 2014 Noosa Art Award close on 15 June. Noosa Regional Gallery’s annual art award program has re-invented itself under the new Noosa Council to become the Noosa Art Award, a slight shift in direction from a purely 3D art prize to include 2D works and is open to artists and designers across the nation, with the major prize of $7000 cash and the prestige of their work acquired into the Noosa Council corporate art collection. Previous 3D art prize winner, Ange Leech says that receiving the award has been very important to her career. “With the prize, I was able to travel to both Europe and the US where I gained new skills and collaborated with many different people in the creative sectors,” she said. “In America, I created sculpture with students from the Institute of American Indian Arts and with renowned sculptor, Professor Dana Chodzko. “I now reside in regional Australia where I use the skills gained during my travels to mentor and work with people

letters More free buses THANKYOU for the opportunity to respond to free buses in Noosa on public holidays. My preference would be to have a free shuttle bus from The J to Hastings Street every day. All Noosa buses should be free in school holidays, as well as public holidays. Perth has had the CAT buses running for around 20 years. In peak hour they are full. A green CAT bus has recently been added to the Blue, Red and Yellow fleet. The Green Cat services Perth to Leederville. Each busload of passengers removes about 50 cars from Perth’s congested streets. Fremantle has a free Orange Cat which is well used. Bring on the free buses. Robin Mitchell, Noosa.
One in, all in I AM in favour of free buses only if everyone in the Noosa Shire has access to them on holidays. The 630 and 631 had no access to the free buses over Easter. Jennifer Sadler, Lake Macdonald.
What debt crisis? LETTERS have recently debated the supposed debt crisis that underpins the Federal Budget and the fiscal policies of the two major parties. Let’s have a closer look at history. About $4 billion worth of debts were inherited by the Labor Government in 2007 from John Howard’s Liberal Government. This was after our strongest period of growth in decades, during which $70 billion of government owned assets were sold off at rock bottom prices by Treasurer Peter Costello. Almost every benefit from the mining boom was squandered by the Coalition while middle-class welfare was boosted to unparalleled heights. After Labor came to power in 2007, there was $160 billion in tax receipt write-downs as a result of a weaker economy. The GFC hit. Meanwhile, every developed nation entered recession except for Australia. The stimulus package of $52 billion was heralded as a model response by the IMF, OECD and World Bank. To maintain surpluses during this period, as the Coalition suggests Labor should have done, would have been irresponsible. The other major contributor to our debt was a $37.5 billion investment in NBN. The Howard Government completely ignored broadband. The current government doesn’t understand it either. That’s because conservatives are inherently backward-looking rather than looking forwards. The remainder of the gross debt is $50.5 billion over five years, which is equal to 0.6 per cent of GDP. In the context of a $1.6 trillion economy this is chickenfeed. Australia has a Triple-A credit rating from all three major ratings agencies - one of only seven countries in the world to enjoy that honour. Thanks to the Coalition? No, thanks to Labor. This rating from all three agencies was never achieved under Howard and Costello - the supposed “golden age” of the Australian economy. In terms of current government net debt as a percentage of GDP, we are the third-best performing country in the world, beaten only by Denmark and Estonia. Every other nation carries far more debt than we do. Debt crisis? What crisis? Gar Bain, Peregian.
Returning fire TWO local Liberal supporters have come out with both guns blazing after my criticisms of the budget. Interestingly, they have not let the facts get in the way of a good roasting.
Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au
Praise for Howard’s cleaning up Labor’s mess rings hollow when you realise that Howard sold off over $96 billion of Commonwealth publiclyowned assets, including the Reserve Bank’s gold reserves. Those assets, which were income-producing, are gone now into private hands. It was easy to crow about a surplus after such a sell-out of Australia. At the same time private debt increased massively, by $80 billion, as the private sector borrowed to scoop up these guaranteed money-spinners. Costello lost billions of our dollars speculating with our taxes on foreign currency markets. The Fairfax media publicised this, but most Australians were unaware that it had happened. In addition to this, the IMF has been scathing of Howard’s failure to build infrastructure for this country during the mining boom years, when, to quote Costello, taxation revenue was “rivers of gold”. The Labor Government was elected just after the 2007 GFC. Because that government had the foresight to borrow money to stimulate the economy, Australia not only weathered this crisis better than any other country, the three major rating agencies lifted our rating to AAA. After seeing the success of stimulus to the economy, the US quickly followed suit. Much was said about Labor “raising the debt ceiling” with little explanation of what it was or why. This refers to the sale of government bonds. Because of the strength of our economy postGFC, there was huge pressure on our government to increase the debt ceiling so that foreign money could find a safe haven. It was raised to $300 billion. One month after taking office Joe Hockey lifted the debt ceiling to $500 billion, a 60 per cent increase in the nation’s debt ceiling overnight. Within six months of taking office, at a spending rate of $328 million per day, as opposed to Labor’s average of $83 million per day, the Abbott Government has increased our government debt to $312 billion. In order to control the neutral Reserve Bank, an institution that in the past has set interest rates and given Australian governments frank and fearless advice, the Abbott Government sacked its chairman, replacing him with a Liberal crony. Because building infrastructure is not their forte, but privatising public assets is, this government has floated the idea of selling off Australia Post, and the Reserve Bank. America’s money supply is in the hands of the privately-owned Federal Reserve and it is a nation that is rapidly declining. Why anyone would want to emulate the US is beyond comprehension, but then again, the Liberal Government’s handling of our money and assets is not logical, sadly, nor is it competent. The Abbott Government’s May budget is a blueprint for taking masses of money out of circulation, this is the reverse of stimulus, it will slow the economy and drive many businesses to the wall. Sadly it will also badly hurt Australia’s most vulnerable people. A lose, lose for everybody. Joy Ringrose, Pomona.
Question of calibre THE Prime Minister has promised paid parental leave to “women of calibre”, costing billions of dollars. As Minister for Women, what does Tony Abbott have in store for the rest of us women of no “calibre? Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.
Figures speak volumes FIRST, I have to acknowledge the excellent letters from David Wilson and Peter Bayliss in last week’s edition.
But the list they provide is short of much of the financial problems the Rudd/Gillard/Swan Federal Labor Government left us. A major problem that the current Labor leader, Bill Shorten seems to deny exists. So here is a more extensive list: From the financial year 2005-’06 to now, with the greatest increase during the six years of Labor Federal Government, we have seen our national debt increase massively: - Federal Government debt increase from $59 billion to today’s $315 billion. - State Government debt increase from $86 billion to today’s $232 billion. - Business debt up from $658 billion $1109 billion (this excludes the banks). - Private debt from $941 billion to $1840 billion. So the total debt we are now in is $3.5 trillion, which comes out to $152,000 per living Australian (which equates to some $7000 per person per year interest payment needed). Okay, now can Labor leader Bill Shorten or anyone else who hates the Abbott Government for their budget, explain what actions we really have to take to get out of this horrendous situation? Or will they continue to tell us there is no problem and no debt? Geoff Cass, Tewantin.
Waste of time, money NOOSA councillor Tony Wellington has just washed almost $200,000 of our money down the drain by convincing council to appeal the Masters development. I am absolutely shocked at how little he understands about the planning process and unfortunately we now have to pay for his poor decisionmaking. For future reference Tony, it is unlawful to refuse a development application because it was made by a multinational company, or because it is a ‘big box’ development. Developments are assessed on their merits against the applicable planning scheme and other policies/documents. In this case, Noosa Council’s documents intend the site to be used for trade-related showrooms, hardware and garden centres as identified in the officer’s report to council. Sound like a Masters store? With council documents being as clear as this, I suggest to Tony, Carl Beck, Brian Hayes that it is unfortunate and a waste of everyone’s time and money that businesses have to go to court to get their approval in cases like this. Given Noosa Council’s financial debt, this is a time where it needs to be particularly frugal with its money and our councillors need to start understanding this. Daniel Williams, Noosa.
pendent scientists and summarises them so we can see the big picture. Here’s an intact quotation from its latest report: “Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, sea level has risen, and the concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased.” I can’t speak for other readers, but I’d prefer my interpretations of climate science to come from real climate scientists, 97 per cent of whom would say that Mr Dass is talking nonsense. Graham Coghill, Marcus Beach.
Recycled initiative WHEN asked about the Medicare co-payment, Tony Abbott reminds us of Bob Hawke’s suggestion to do the same. As a new government, the first budget doesn’t look good to admit you are using a past Labor policy and you don’t have the initiative for a better one. E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.
Doesn’t pay the bills SURPRISINGLY, Noosa Shire Council’s new budget is not unlike the SCC generated start-up model, but perhaps the forecasts do not correspond with reality. Some of the costs seem to be understated and with a fiscal neutral policy, this could be a problem. Without a growth strategy, ratepayers will have to make up the deficit. As stated, austerity helps but it doesn’t pay the debt. John Lobb, Peregian Springs.
TO the Noosa Council for their policies around protecting and understanding the plight of Flying-fox colonies. TO Pomona skipper Greg Hodder and his trio of ‘social bowlers’ Col Carruthers, Bill Schutt and Russell Hill for pulling off one of the greatest upsets in club history by taking out the Men’s Fours Championship. The result has been the talk of the town and will go down in club folklore. While we are on bowls, we must tip our lid to the Cooroy bowlers, who have reinvented themselves and will remain on the rinks for some time to come.
Real science I CAN sympathise with Woody Dass (Noosa Today, 29 May). His valiant attempt to educate his readers via a “modified” quote from the IPCC went astray as a result of editing. It’s a good illustration of how futile it is to try to discuss complex scientific issues in a community newspaper. I’m afraid my sympathy doesn’t extend, though, to the misguided message he wants to get across. The fact is that his modifications, inserted “so readers would understand what the IPCC was saying” had the effect of misleading them, not helping them. Mr Dass sees himself as an intrepid messenger, being shot down for spreading his version of climate science. That’s surely a bit ironic, given his repeated attempts to blast the real messenger - the IPCC. That body is merely an organisation that reviews the findings of thousands of inde-
TO motorists who attempt to cut off other motorists when travelling through roundabouts - what’s the big hurry? TO the couple in a P-plate car who slowed down to engage in a slanging match with two cyclists on Gympie Terrace, Noosaville last week . A young girl leaning out the passenger window yelling abuse is not a good look. Come on guys, surely there’s room for all vehicles on the road. TO Noosa Today, for slipping up in the back page story on the outrigger challenge when making reference to the Noosa Yacht Club. Whoops! Of course we all know Noosa does not have a yacht club as such, but does have a very successful Noosa River Yacht and Rowing Club, which was a hive of Riverfest activity at the weekend.

Matthews at home in Australia By JOLENE OGLE SINGER/SONGWRITER Wendy Matthews is coming to the Sunshine Beach Surf Club for one show only on 15 June. Matthews brings her deliciously soothing yet crisp voice that evokes memories of love lost, love found and an insatiable desire to kiss like angels do, as she tours her latest album The Welcome Fire. Speaking with Noosa Today, Matthews said her newest album was created through collaboration, experimentation and a personal journey. “I took some time off between touring to get together with some people some I knew, some I didn’t - to record and write some really kind of personal songs in different ways,” she said. “Every combination of people has a completely different dynamic.” While Matthews admitted it can be scary sharing personal feelings with the world, she believes it is an important part of music and being an artist. “I decided a long time ago that if I were to be any kind of artist, it’s really about putting your raw feelings out there, not about trying to hide yourself and hopefully people can relate to that,” she said. “As a human being it’s not easy to get sad or angry and put it out there into the world. But I think that’s what affects people about music.”
Matthews was born in Canada but adopted by Australia when she landed here in 1983 to tour as back-up vocals for Glenn Shorrock of Little River Band fame. Of her decision to stay in Sydney after the tour, Matthews said Australia seemed such an exotic and fun place to live. “I had lived in a house full of Australians (while) in Los Angeles. I had sort of got to know the place vicariously through my friends and it was somewhere that I had always wanted to go,” she said. Matthews joined Australian groups such as Absent Friends who had the hit I Don’t Want to be With Nobody But You (1990) before launching her solo career in 1990 with her debut record Émigré. Hits such as Lets Kiss (Like Angels Do) (1990) and The Day You Went Away (1992), which took out Single of the Year in 1993, soon followed along with numerous awards including six ARIAs, and the Rolling Stone’s Best Female Vocalist in 1990. In her 24-year solo career, Matthews has released a total of nine albums but despite her success, Matthews said she hasn’t stopped to look back on all the “fantastic times” throughout her career. “I’ve been so busy, but I think generally I’m really grateful for all the travel,” she said.
“I’ve got to travel around the world with my work over the years and I’m very grateful for that. “I don’t think I would have had the opportunity to do a lot of that if I
wasn’t in this business.” Don’t miss Matthews when she performs at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club on 15 June, from 2.30pm. Tickets are on sale now starting
from $25 for members and $30 for non-members. To book your ticket, phone 5447 5491 or drop into the Sunshine Beach Surf Club, Duke St, Sunshine Beach.
Want to fly a dragon? THE sequel to family favourite How To Train Your Dragon, this story follows the adventure of Hiccup and Toothless as they discover an ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious dragon rider. Follow these two friends as they find themselves at the
centre of a battle to protect the peace of their land. Staring the voices of Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler and Jonah Hill, the second instalment of this much-loved animation is sure to make you laugh, cry and, most of all, want to fly a dragon. The advanced screening
is this Sunday 8 June, from 10.30am. For a chance to win some great prizes, grab a colouring sheet from the Ticket Box and submit your child’s art work by Saturday 7 June. Simply be at the screening for the draw of the winners.

Burlesque dancers show they can
The burb that... disappeared
The D’Vine Burlesque night went off with a bang, when 20 Pomona locals took to the stage to dance, sing and can-can the night away on 30 and 31 May. Twelve burlesque dancers, aged from 25 to 75, stole the show with their sultry moves and cheeky routines, while Carl Beck wooed the crowd with the sweet tunes of Sinatra. The balloon dance was a big hit, along with swing dancing and the can-can, there was plenty of action throughout the night.
4MBS Classic Arts presents ‘Cribbie... the Brisbane suburb that disappeared’ for one night only at the Noosa Arts Theatre, 14 June. Cribb Island, or “Cribbie”, was once a burgeoning seaside holiday destination with idyllic ocean views and grand vacation houses, until the depression hit and the suburb became home for the unemployed - the shameful home of down-andouts. But before too long, the suburb disappeared - the community forcibly relocated and homes bulldozed to make way for the new Brisbane airport. The residents were devastated.
When orchids aren’t orchids THERE are about 30,000 species of orchids in the world with around 700 of these found in Australia. Of those found here, 75 per cent are ‘terrestrial’, which means they grow in the ground. One of these orchids is the ‘Pterostylis’ commonly known as Green Hood Orchids. These plants grow across several states with large
colonies in the southern states. Like most of our orchids they are endangered because of habitat clearing for housing and agriculture so it is imperative we save these gems through cultivation and setting aside areas in their habitat. To learn more about these and other orchids the Noosa District Orchid and Foliage Society meets at Tinbeerwah Hall on the first Saturday of
each month. The meeting is at 1pm for a 1.30pm start. The club is fortunate to have Alan Parkes from Nambour as the guest speaker at the July meeting. Alan will give an insight into how he grows Pterostylis in this area. For more information contact John Green 5483 2764 or visit the Noosa District Orchid and Foliage web site.
Cribbie, the play, tells the stories of past residents as captured by writers Michael and Margery Forde (Milo’s Wake, Way Out West) who tell of a tight-knit community, full of colourful characters drawn together by poverty, adversity and a deep sense of connection. Performed by a talented fourpiece cast - Louise Brehmer, Sandro Colarelli, Kevin Hides and Erin Murphy - the play features hilarious impersonations of the suburb’s most colourful characters, from the policeman who never arrested anyone, to the Bee Gees and their first experiences performing.
This heart-warming and hilarious show is on for one night only, 14 June, at the Noosa Arts Theatre, 163 Weyba Rd, Noosaville. Tickets are available now and start from $15 for children under 17, $20 for concession, groups and members, and $25 for adults. To book your seat, phone 5449 9343 or drop into the Theatre on Tuesday to Friday, from 9am to 2pm, or Saturday, from 9am to 12noon. For more information, visit www.noosaartstheatre.org.au.

On Cuba time LIFE OF BRINE PHIL JARRATT
THE bus was two hours late. When I inquired at the travel desk of the Aguas Azule Prison Camp, the pretty girl just shrugged and said: “Cuba time.” Fortunately, I had the chronic runs thanks to the buffet lunch, so the afternoon passed quickly. When the bus finally arrived it was half-full of irate passengers who already knew they were going to miss their very important dates in Havana, and the on-board dunny was out of order. The man whose job it was to count heads and make announcements, grabbed a microphone and launched into a long-winded explanation in Spanish and English of why none of this was his fault. The driver looked on and nodded his agreement. We remained in the driveway of the resort, motionless. “Vamoose! Vamoose!” people began yelling, and I joined in. Now we were having fun. Finally we moved sedately onto the road and drove for half an hour in the direction of Havana before pulling into another big hotel where we waited for 20 minutes while Microphone Man had earnest discussions with various hotel employees before reboarding without any new passengers. He picked up the microphone and began announcing that none of this was his fault, but that there were two hotels of the same name and this was the wrong one. We began driving away from Havana again. People were now throwing food at him. We drove past Aguas Azule again and waved at the inmates, drove another 15 minutes and picked up one passenger. As we passed Aguas Azule yet again, I realised that we were now more than four hours late and we hadn’t gone anywhere yet. I yelled “Vamoose!” at the front of the bus, which seemed to help. We drove for almost an hour and Microphone Man announced that we were about to pick up the last passenger, but that there was a small problem in that the driver couldn’t find the hotel, none of which was his fault. Passengers rustled in their bags, looking for things to throw at him. We found the hotel. Havana here we come! But not before the scheduled halfway 20-minute stop to allow the driver and Microphone Man to take a leak, have a coffee with a rum chaser and smoke three cigarettes. (I counted.) We filed back on the bus, totally dispirited now. No-one threw anything, we just groaned as one. We were dropped at the Hotel Plaza in time
“
to have a quick dinner, hopefully keep it down, and check into a room for two hours’ sleep before having to leave for the airport. At least we didn’t get our old room back. This one had no windows at all, but there was a pillow each and the toilet flushed. Perfect! I had ordered a taxi to pick us up at 3am but when we checked out, the concierge had great news. “A taxi is $25 but I have organised a private car for only $20,” he announced proudly. It occurred to me that a town car would never be cheaper than a cab, but I was too weak to argue. Instead we followed the man through the batwing doors to an ancient red wreckage of a vehicle, held together by a slovenly young man whose shirt was torn open as though he had been in a brawl earlier in the night. Our bags didn’t fit in the boot, but it didn’t matter because the boot didn’t close anyway. The driver pulled out a length of rope and tied it off, then motioned us to climb into the slashed plastic of the back seat. “Will this thing make it to the airport?” I asked. He spoke no English. One of the best things about Cuba was the leaving of it. Fifty bucks slipped to the airline check-in clerk got us upgraded to first class and we sipped champagne as we climbed into the sunrise. The new day was improving by the minute and we were in reasonably good spirits as we lugged Phil Jarratt our bags through the Mexico City terminal for a long pitstop. We found a café with decent coffee and good wi-fi and settled in, but at check-in for our flight to California, the dark cloud that had been following us descended again. “Where is your ESTA number?” the checkin girl demanded. “No ESTA number, no fly to America.” Since Homeland Security introduced the on-line visa waiver program known as ESTA several years ago, I have travelled in and out of the US on many occasions and have never been asked for any paper. In fact, the ESTA home page advises you that there is no need to carry documentation, but the Mexican girls at the Air Tran counter were adamant. I ran back to the wi-fi café and frantically tried to bring up our files. For inexplicable reasons, my wife’s file read: “Application expired.” Better not show them that one. I returned to the counter and started free-form raving. We had to attend a funeral, my wife needed medication for a rare disease, I was homesick, we’d run out of pesos … anything. “We were in America a month ago,” I pleaded. “Look.” I found our entry stamps and there, in bold print, was a validity date in July. We managed to attract the attention of a supervisor, there was a hurried conference, and over the protests of the check-in chicks, we were on our way home.
Will this thing make it to the airport?

pet mate Being cruel to be kind to pets might appear to have a healthy appetite, many pets don’t stop eating when they’re full. Overfeeding a pet leads to obesity, which can create a number of health problems. It’s estimated about 41 per cent of dogs in Australia are overweight or obese. De-sex outdoor cats. While it can be upsetting to put a cute little kitten through a medical procedure, if the cat is going to spend time outdoors then it needs to be de-sexed, or owners will have a lot more kitties on their hands to deal with!

EVERYONE loves their pets but vets are urging owners not to “be kind to be cruel”. Veterinarian and Medibank Pet Insurance ambassador Dr Chris Brown said it can sometimes be difficult to know what is best for a pet. “People can often make the mistake of treating a beloved animal like a human being. “However, a pet’s needs are very different to ours. “Things we enjoy - such as chocolate - can be poisonous for many animals,” he said. “Similarly, while you may enjoy nothing more than relaxing on a sofa in the evening, your dog needs to be walked regularly.” Dr Chris said it is important that people educate themselves thoroughly on the care process for their specific pet and utilise the many great books and websites available as well as plenty of advice from their local vet. Here are some of Dr Chris’ hints so owners can ensure they are giving their pet what they really need: - Don’t overfeed a pet. While a beloved animal

foods that humans enjoy are poisonous to some animals, so research any treats. For example chocolate and mushrooms are dangerous for cats and dogs and in some cases can be fatal? Small dogs are not fashion accessories. Yes, they’re cute and Paris Hilton has one, but don’t carry a dog around in your handbag. He or she is still an animal and needs exercise! Make sure cats are fed enough. Although cats are hunters and will bring the occasional “present” of a bird or mouse home, don’t make the mistake of assuming they don’t need regular feed-

ing. However independent a cat may seem, don’t leave them to fend for themselves. Take a dog for regular walks. Yes, relaxing on the sofa reading or watching TV is a great past time but a dog needs to be walked regularly, preferably twice a day, and will need lots of open space. This is a big commitment, so would-be owners should make sure they are ready to make it prior to acquiring the pet. Bring cats indoors at night. Owners may love the nightlife and appreciate a cat’s desire to stay out late, or it may be a hassle to bring them indoors every night. However, cats are more prone to traffic accidents in the dark and more likely to go hunting at night, leading to some unpleasant surprises for their owners in the morning. Dr Chris concludes: “Pets are wonderful companions and often become an integral part of the family. “Looking after them can be hugely rewarding, just be sure that you look at their world through their eyes, and give them the best care they need.”

Back to The Way We Were IF you remember when Hastings Street was a dirt road, the Junction was a caravan park and the surf was never crowded, then you will remember The Way We Were. Join local musicians and chefs at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club as they recreate the “old” Noosa with tunes and a two-course meal that capture a more simple time. Sunshine Beach Surf Club chef Darren Sandilands, who was an apprentice during this “Golden Era”, said he had many fond memories of Noosa and its sense of community. “My favourite memory of Noosa is walking alongside and mingling with the growers and fisherman who sold fresh, local produce to the restaurants,” he said. “It was so satisfying to see those same producers back in the restaurants that night eating the local cuisine they had delivered earlier that day.” Darren will be joined in the kitchen by Coco’s and Angels’ chef Trisha O’Reilly, who will together cook up some of their all-time favourite Noosa dishes.
Diners will have a choice of three entrees including Coco’s famous beetroot and gin-cured ocean trout with a soft herb salad, hand milked trout roe, mustard cream and crispy bread, Angels’ signature panko crumbed lamb’s brains or Laguna Bay Dreaming grilled polenta with fig parmesan, salted ricotta and wild rocket salad. There is a choice of three mains, with Trisha and Darren serving up Coco’s well-known seafood bouillabaise, Little Cove mixed mushroom and crunchy vegetable san choy bow or Ebony’s Moroccan-style lamb shanks with parmesan semolina and preserved lemon. The Way We Were is on 21 June, from 7pm. Bookings are essential, with tickets available now for $49.95, which includes a two-course meal and complimentary crudits. Darren and Trisha’s nostalgic meals will be served to the tasteful tunes of Noosa musical legends Col Noble, Ewan MacKenzie and Barry Charles. Phone 5447 5491 for more information or drop into the Sunshine Beach Surf Club, Duke Street, Sunshine Beach.

Cooroy hanging in there COOROY COMMUNITY
TEWANTIN NOOSA
WELL the Cooroy Community Bowls Club has risen from the ashes like the proverbial phoenix. Negotiations with the new owners have been successful so we live to bowl another day. It is exciting and it is bowling as usual while we strive to rebuild spirit and interest in our club. The End of an Era games were completed, a fitting finale for the Cooroy RSL Bowls Club. The winners of the Terry Silver Cup in the High Rollers were 1st Eumundi Boys on 58 points, 2nd JeLs on 54 points and 3rd Galahs on 53 points. The wooden spooners were Cormorants on 38 points. Tuesday Jackpot Pairs were R. Butler and G. Duffield. Runners-up were C. McGrath and R. Sorrensen. All efforts will be put into making the green available for games on Tuesday afternoon (Jackpot Pairs), Saturday afternoon (Jackpot Pairs) and Sunday afternoon. Consideration is also being given to holding a ladies’ afternoon once a month on a Thursday afternoon. Madill’s Day will still occur every second Thursday and our inaugural event will be Ladies Day (formerly President’s Day) on Thursday 26th June. New game formats and variations will be played in an attempt to invigorate interest in bowls. Please contact Julie Ainscough 0409 261 953 if you would like more information. - Julie Ainscough
CONGRATULATIONS to the men’s team of Tony Howard, Bob Mulvogue, Troy Rowley (s) and Micheal Sorrensen (sub) on winning the 2014 Cooroora two-day men’s triples. This was a great effort in a strong field. May’s RSL bowls was played at Noosa Heads with Alan Clamp’s team +18 winning from Bob Cook’s team +15. Joint leaders to date are Jack Dibble and Terry O’Neill with a margin of +41. It was great to see the ladies’ games director, Van Vignon, bowling again on Tuesday. Also noticed at the club were Val Reinicke and Gina Patterson who have had knee surgery. Apologies to Dossie Buckley for last week’s error with her name. The ladies’ triples championship is underway and the men’s will soon be drawn. Please check the noticeboards and website. Our club coaching on Saturday mornings is available. Contact the club for details. The Monday training with Rick Dickson and Bob Ginnaw is attracting good attendances. Arrive 12.30 for 1pm start. The weekly competitions were well patronised, with Tuesday’s John Madill’s monthly nominated fours won by Mary Forbes, Olive Nicholas, Peter Hogan, Carolyn Pulham, from Jim McDonald, Van Vignon, Ann Booth, Margaret Dodd. Wednesday’s Laguna Estate men’s triples had Lucio Lloyd, Jim Bain,
Ken Johannesen +25 winning from Rod Gunderson, Peter Renwick, Peter Vignon +22. Friday’s Laguna Estate mixed three bowl triples had Kath Simmons, Gary Bond, Bryan Simmons in the winner’s circle from Jan Lancaster, Marlene Trembath, Peter Larke second.
NOOSA HEADS JUNE means winter - and that means heading for Noosa for many of our regular bowling visitors whose names are starting to show up on our playing lists. Each year, dozens of them arrive here from New Zealand and our southern states, with some lucky ones staying a month or two. Sadly, Noosa Heads Bowls Club must vacate its Junction site by May next year, so many may well look for an alternative holiday destinatiion. Brian Ford and Niven Gugich combined to win last Tuesday’s competition from the triples team of Ken Bain (Syd), Ron Wallish and Graeme Thiele (NZ) Jeanette Emery and Carol Studley took out the Wednesday ladies from Fran Coules and Melbourne visitor Faye Brazel. Pat Teale and Andrew McCall were winners of Friday Open Jackpot Pairs over Jan and Bill Burkitt. The biggest margin in Saturday play was scored by the triples team of John Channing-Pearce, Beryl Nelson and Frank Turton. Next came Eileen McDonald, Fabio Cantori and Beryl Small. Entries for the ladies triples and men’s veteran pairs close off this
week with first round matches due to be played by Thursday of next week, 12 June. - The Chalker
Keba 6 engineered a win this week over All Stars 4 who had previously been on a winning streak and Bee Man 8 stung Buccaneers 2 who are struggling with an everextending injury list. Cartwrights 8 out muscled Phantoms 2 whilst RSOR 12 had a big win over Good Shepherd Gold 2. What a gorgeous afternoon we had to play touch footy before the setback of the Maroons loss last Wednesday but I’m sure we’ll beat the Blues in the second match! Blazers had a good win against Good Shepherd with Harley, Jake and Pedro having great games. Our own Maroons outlasted Cool Runnings in a highly entertaining match.
Yuji, Levi and Roy gave strong performances for their teams. Parker, Ava and Alla had first rate games in the match-up between Purple Panthers and Twisters with Purple Panthers taking the win. Steppers went down fighting to Saints in a battle of the boys with great play shown by Jack, Noah K and Leo. Banana Splits and Purple Storm both played well with Banana Splits being the eventual winners on the day. Tenay, Jamaica and Monique played well. That Cool Team came away with the points against Good Shepherd with Morgan, Millie and Bella producing good games. Inferno just nudged out Sunshine Rebels with Harrison, Giverny

NDSHS 9s proved too strong for NDSHS 8s Blue with Jemima, Keziah and Jerry-Lee showing great skill. In a close win SBSHS 16s just managed to hold out NDSHS 8s Green. Jessie, Abby and Ally played strongly. A huge thanks to our junior referees, most of whom are very new to refereeing the game. A special thanks to Ryan Christensen who picked up a whistle despite feeling unwell and did a great job on an U10s game.

PLAYERS from the Noosa Croquet Club are taking part in the Sunshine Coast Regional Croquet Clubs pennants competition with teams in all three codes of croquet - association, ricochet and golf. The current comp runs over some months, for both singles and doubles, and there have been some very competitive matches with some good wins and a few close losses. Results for May are as follows: on Monday, 26 May, Noosa’s Golf croquet team defeated Coolum 6 games to 4. In ricochet on Thursday,15 May, Hans van Moorst and John Olsen of Noosa played Nambour and won 2:1. In association croquet on Wed, 21 May, John Olsen teaming with John Philpott, played Caloundra at home, the result once again being 2:1. Our club is located at Seashell Place, Noosaville, telephone 5434 2077. Organised croquet games are played seven days a week on five excellent grass courts. Visitors are most welcome and “Come and Try” sessions are held at 10am on the first Sunday of each month. Free lessons are available and new members find that they are able to join in the social sessions very quickly. If you are looking for an outdoor, social sporting activity why not drop in and see one of the most attractive croquet venues in Queensland. Come and try croquet, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Mixed games for great touch action MONDAY’S mixed games saw some great touch action with Noosa Surf 8 getting the points with a win over Breakaway Marine 5 and Fumble That 14 well and truly holding the ball against Gotchas 1. In a close battle Bandits 8 just robbed Cruzers 7 of finishing on top at the final siren. Reapers 9 just edged out RSL Cougars 7 and All Coast Roofing 10 had a strong win over Madills 5. Slippery Eels 8 accounted for CSR 4 even with the loss of star player Mick with what may be a seasonending injury. Atmosphere 7 ran away with the game over Good Shepherd 1, the end scoreline not reflecting the intensity of the game.

Tackling drills on the way Under 7 White THE boys had a late game today against a well-drilled Bribie Island team. The Noosa boys will be having plenty of tackling drills and running forwards this week at training. Too many missed tackles and side ways running today from the little champions. Lincoln Knight worked hard once his boots turned up and Lachlan Ward stepped beautifully through his own creative gap to score right under the posts. Super Sam Proctor managed to cover much of the field turning up as much as he could to tackle well above his size and Rhy North has risen to another level in his attack.
Under 8 THE boys had a really tough game against Beerwah Bulldogs this weekend, with some standout performances by big Jo Dwyer having some awesome runs and making some great tackles. Benny Graf had his usual great game with his leadership from dummy half and his magic tackling. Joshy Palmer also had an awesome game with his crushing tackling display also scoring two tries, one of which saw him launch himself like Superman through the Bulldogs defence line to score one of the tries of the season. Great team effort this week by the boys. Go the Pirates!
Under 9 Blue THE Under 9 blue team were back to their best on Saturday against the Beerwah Bulldogs. The Noosa team started the game well with some hard forward running which resulted in some great tries being scored. The highlight of
the game was how much the tackling has improved (from all that practice at training), and coach Darren, was very impressed with how much effort all the players put into defence this week. Jack Cross was Player of the Match, tackling everything that moved and for organising the team.
Under 10 White THE White Pirates played Caloundra Black on Caloundra’s home soil last weekend. Caloundra jumped out to a solid start, making the boys have to work hard in defence with Zane, Corben, Digger and Kynan tackling well. Once the Pirates had some possession, confidence rose and the attack of Antonio, Ashtyn and Cooper spread through the remainder of the team making the Whites become a point scoring machine team. Skills and confidence is growing every week, but please remember boys that Tuesday skills training with coach Jez is really important. Cooper was awarded Player of the Match. Coach Jez was as happy as a Queenslander will be after 18 June with the massive effort the boys put in their game today at home against Beerwah. Again this week it cannot be mentioned that the majority of boys in this team are newbies to footy this year and again today they showed that listening and practising at training during the week brings everything together in a game on the weekend. Ty, Jarred, Jackson, Kallen and Ashtyn were awesome in defence, with Ashtyn being named Player of the Match. Thanks for coming to watch, Larz and get better soon, Jesi.
Under 10 Blue
Under 13C
LAST week saw the Under 10 Blue team travel to Caloundra to play Caloundra Black. Quinnie and Luke got the ball out to allow Zak to pull off quite a few elusive runs. The ball distribution from the ruck by Ollie and Ben W was quick ensuring every attack raid gained Pirate ground. Ben U put his heart into some brilliant tackles and some side line runs. Quinlan was named Player of the Match. Coach Jez was as happy as a New South Welshman today with how the boys implemented structure into their game at home against Beerwah. Harry working with Ethan, Curtis, Jax and Dan saw the Blue Pirates score many times. Ben U was awarded Player of the Match today for his hard tackling and multiple runs.
EVEN with a long list of injuries the boys dug in deep with a convincing win against Maroochydore White, with special mentions to Toby Burton and Corey Mackenzie. Congratulations to Owain Ritson who got Man of the Match but bad luck with your injury. Congratulations to the boys last week at Bribie Island on a mercy win against Bribie White with 15 minutes left on the clock and the final score of 56-4. Man of the Match went to Corey Mackenzie. Brett is so proud of you all! See you at training on Tuesday.
Under 11 Blue UNDER 11 Blue stayed in the winning circle with a close victory over Palmwoods due to a gutsy defensive effort. There were some great efforts by Heath Robinson, Jack Dewhurst, Ryan Mcleary and Jack Ritchie. Our attack is getting better every week with all of our backs improving, which is coming from their great efforts at training over the past few weeks. Best on Ground this week goes to our great improver Liam Fox who has been putting his hand up in the forwards and doing the hard yards running straight into our opposition which paid off this week with a great try. Great effort from all the boys keep up the good training and you can only get better good work.
Dolphins call the shots A DAMP weekend didn’t stop the mighty Dolphin Juniors from notching up some impressive tries and favourable results on the weekend.
U6 Reds 35 d Brothers 30 JAXON improves with every game and was supported well on defence by Darcy and Noah. The twins have found the accelerator pedal and Stirling was rewarded with his first try of the season as a result. Jax halted a certain try with a brave tackle. Charlie, Zac and Conor all got over the chalk and Harry seems to have found his natural position directing play from flyhalf. Domino’s Pizza Player Of The Match was Noah Gibbs.
U6 Fins 35 drew Caloundra 35 THE Fins were on fire yet again with fancy footwork and spirited enthusiasm. No one could catch Rory, as proved by his three tries. Brendan was unstoppable with his sprint down the sideline. Noah showed great improvement and determination with some fantastic tags whilst Gus was staunch in both attack and defence. Julian got stuck into the job at hand, keeping the opposition at bay. Great teamwork this week meant the tries were shared between the boys, with one apiece from Myles, George, Jackson and Phoenix who scored his first try of the season. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match goes to Phoenix Ericson-Wirth.
and Hunter worked all day. Tex keeps coming into the game and Joey keeps getting better every week. Hammish got in the game as a late sub and contributed well. Domino’s Pizza player of the Match was Tex and Zay took home the coach’s award.
U7 Reds 50 d Flinders 40 THE wet pitch didn’t impact on our speedsters with 10 fleet-footed tries by Noosa to Flinders 8. Jack Dudgeon’s skills were on full display, scoring an impressive six tries, and one try apiece for Thomas Russell, Daniel O’Shea, Kane Shedlock and Charlie Lambert. Domino’s Pizza Players of the Match went to Joe Howard for his leadership as captain and Eli Maclean for his valiant efforts in defence despite an ankle injury.
U7 Flinders 40 d Fins 30 IT was a very tight game with each team alternating try scoring one to one, until the hunger for the ball created some confusion for the Noosa Fins, leaving openings in defence in the last minutes of the game. Thomas Russell had a magic game ducking and weaving between the Flinders team, scoring four tries and Brandon Gesell scored two tries as a result of his determination to get the ball over the line. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match went to Thomas Russell.
U6 Blues 40 d St Andrews 20
U8 Whites 40 d Grammar 0
YET another tough match with some fierce tackling from both sides. Zay opened the scoring by breaking free from the break down to score. Oskar played out of his skin and laid some great tackles saving certain tries. Pearl was on fire and took advantage of great breakdown work to score five tries. Jude ran some screamers while Atticus
WITH six rounds into the season, the Whites are playing great rugby. The forwards are getting stronger and the backs are getting faster. Our effort was reflected in the score. Try scorers Louie (5), Taj (1), Saatchi (2). Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match was Saatchi Smith with coach’s encouragement award to Lee Roma.
U9 Reds 20 d Maleny 15
Under 14A UNDER 14 Gold travelled to Caboolture this week. Unfortunately we came up against a very physical team who had the desire to win. Our Man of the Match went to Wavell Clements for his first game back with some solid runs. Last week the boys posted a win against Nambour of 36-16.
Under 14B THE boys were under strength today due to illness and injuries leaving us with ten players before kick off. Thanks to Austin, Gian, Ryan, Nathan, Benny and Jack G for backing up from their game to get us a team on the field. Our boys had a tough day with Caboolture dominating in both attack and defence. Best for Noosa was Kyle Jarvis with Jack Anderson receiving the Encouragement Award.
Under 15 UNFORTUNATELY, due to a number of injuries we had to forfeit Friday’s
game. We have a bye this week so we should be back firing in two weeks time!!! Hang in there boys.
Under 16 THE under 16s had the fire and passion back in their bellies when they took on Palmwoods on Friday night. It was a very even tussle in the first half with only a try the difference going into the break. With only 12 players on the paddock in the second, Noosa stood up and went on a try scoring spree. Fred Morris, Ethan Pye and Cooper “Coal Train” Taylor all had standout performances.
Under 16 Girls THE girls played exceptionally well this week against Beachmere and Nambour at home in Cooroy. Their improvement was evident in the final scores, with a draw against Beachmere who in the past have kept the girls scoreless. Although they had a loss with Nambour, the final scores said it all. This is the first season for the girls; Gabbie Hill, Taela Whitmore, Jess Henderson, Megan Staples, Donna Christensen and Giorgi Pert who joined forces with the Palmwoods girls to have a team for this season. They have shown a massive improvement against teams with a lot more game time and experience. Gabbie, Megan, Jess and Taela were strong in defence, and Gabbie proved yet again why she was selected in the girls U/16 Wide Bay team heading up to Cairns in July with her constant hit ups. Well done girls!
A Luke Bourne lineout in the Under 13s.
FORWARD momentum from dual try scorer Oliver, Tane, Jackson and Cam enabled Noosa Reds to overcome a strong Maleny outfit who were clearly motivated by the banjo quarter assembled nearby. Strong defence from Joel , Kye , Mack and Jack along with mature passing games from Tom, Bailey, Max and Fletcher were highlights. Tries -Oliver (2) ,Kye (1), Mack (1). The versatile Mack was named Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match.
U9 Fins 110 d Eumundi 5 THE most pleasing part of this victory was the unselfish passing between the boys. There were eight different try scorers with Andrew and Flynn both scoring four, Hunter, Josh and Reggie bagging three apiece, doubles to Fynn and Leif and one to Harry. Defence was very solid and the backing up of the ball runner superb. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match – Fynn.
U10 Reds 17 d Eumundi 15 THE Reds had a lot of defending to do in the first half, and it felt like Eumundi might have the edge, but Noosa came out determined in the second half and played with a spirit that left the parents jumping up and down on the sideline. Fearless as ever, Jess Robson tackled every Eumundi player on the pitch. Max Ruster (2) and Sabyr Kime (1) both ran like a dream to score Noosa’s three tries. A conversion from Flynn O’Connor put Noosa ahead at the final whistle. Some superbly gutsy tackles from William Batty earned him the Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match.
U10 Caloundra 43 d Fins 5 THIS was always destined to be a tough match against the undefeated
ladder leaders, but the Fins showed enough fighting spirit to suggest they’ll lick their wounds and come back to winning ways again soon. Ashton Hart and Jarrah Charlesworth both had great games, and James Gelling won the bravery award for returning to the pitch and tackling hard again after having been injured. Lauchie Dudgeon added another try to an impressive tally and Ethan Polhner deservedly won the Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match for being everywhere on the pitch in attack and defence.
U13 Noosa 17 d Caloundra 12 IN a tough display of wet weather rugby, both sides showed they meant business. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match and Captain Harry Barnett, saved this best until last. With the game almost over and the Dolphins trailing the Lighthouses by two points, Harry stormed over under the posts to seal an emphatic win. Yvahn Allsworth add-
ed the extras with a conversion. The whole team was challenged with the slippery conditions but for one player, Luke Bourne who flew high, and dominated in the forwards. He was a worthy recipient of the Sonny Payne, Spirit of Rugby Award. Tries- Harry Barnett (3). Conversions- Yvahn Allsworth (1).
U14 Noosa 74 d Caloundra 0 BRILLIANT team effort and outstanding individual performances across the field. Great running by John, Leo and Sameet in the backs which were enabled by a superb performance by the forwards led by captain Adam and backed up by great games from James Dewar, Callum, Chavon and Aiden. Tries to Josh (4) John (3) Sameet (2) Aiden, Tom (1) and Leo (1). Conversions Josh (5) and John (2) . Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match - Josh Brooks.

Basking in glory of awards BETWEEN THE FLAGS
Patrol 11 - Patrol team of the year.
RON LANE
FOR the Noosa Heads SLSC, last Friday evening was the night of the year – the annual dinner and presentation of trophies. It was well attended with a good cross section of the community represented. Among invited guests were Glen Elmes MP, Frank Pardon Noosa Shire Council and representing Lifesaving Queensland, state deputy president Barry Woodger. Representing the Surf Club, the financial support group for the senior club, was chairman Ian Young. Add to this nine life members, and it gives some idea as to the high regard in which the club is now held. In welcoming guests, club president Greg Cowie said, “It is a pleasure to welcome you to this the 86th Annual Dinner of the Noosa Heads SLSC. This must surely be one of the club’s most successful seasons. Our success in being named as the Australian Surf Club of the Year, maintaining our high standard of patrolling, and our achievements in competition from branch level through to the National Titles speaks for themselves. Therefore, it gives me much pleasure in congratulating all our people, patrol members, competitors and support groups; and in particular our sponsors, some of whom have been with us when times were tough. I would also like to take the opportunity to publicly acknowledge the great support given us by councilor Frank Pardon and our local council, with regard to the Seahorse Nippers. Without their support, attendance by the families would have been difficult indeed.” In his speech, local member Glen Elmes said: “Congratulations to you one and all. In particular, I wish to congratulate all those lifesavers involved in the Seahorse Nippers, the group that you have set up to help children in need. I think that this is something that not only your club, but also our entire community can take pride.” To commence the presentation of awards deputy president Gerard O’Brien was called on. Gerard, who midway through the season stepped aside as president to take a chair on the State Center Finance Committee, first of all thanked members for their support during his five years as president. “As the instigator of this award it gives me great pleasure in announcing
that the recipient of this season’s President’s Medal has two winners. The first is Jo Power for her outstanding work in finance; and Phil Bowden for his work in consolidating the boat section in the area of competition.” For Gerard, the highlight of the evening was when he was presented with a new competition board in recognition of his dedication to the club. The reason for the club’s existence is of course surf lifesaving and in this the major awards were as follows: Patrol of the year Patrol 11; Patrol Captain, Jon Gommell; Vice PC James O’Connor; Most Patrol Hours Roger Apanill; Patrol Persons of the Year (Senior) Robin and Paul Jenkinson (Junior) Lucas Nielsen; IRB Driver and Crew Elvie Wytenburg and Lauren Reynolds; Radio Operator Pablo Aquirre; Trainer Barry Leek; Club Person Roger Aspinall; and Operational Support, Rebecca Cooper-Tregoning. Major Encouragement Awards were Rookie Melissa Aitken and Cadet Blake Digby. The Lobin Cup this year went to Daniel Capps. In competition, the major awards were; Open Club Champion, Nick Kirby; Most Improved; Cadet Cooper
Noosa MP Glen Elmes receiving the Club Togs.
Gold medal winner Rohani Bakhach with head coach Darren.
Williams; Junior Rhys Burrows; Most Outstanding Jordan Mercer. In the boats, the Majan Strajnar Award went to Molly Stewart and Club Coaches Award Rohani Bakhach. Officials and coaches were also acknowledged. A major contribution to the success in carnival competition has been the dedication of Sport Administrator Peter French, and the stability and character of the coaching panel.

Noosa sides shine NOOSA Gold Under-7 played an impressive game against the Mooloolaba side. Although they were defeated 6-0, their skills are improving incredibly each week. Montana Ward’s initiative in attacking, earned her player of the match. The game started slowly for Under-7 Black and the Mooloolaba Beamers, with lots of great play for both sides despite no score by half time. In the second half, Eamon Sh-
emansky took hold of the game and shot through two sensational goals, giving Under-7 Black a 2-nil lead, as well as taking home this week’s encouragement award. Isaac Benjamin had a great day as goalie, while Joe Maskall and Jake MacDonald really got into the game and showing many of the skills their coach Andy has taught them. In Under-12, Noosa Gold played a great game against
Six of the very best
the skilled Bli Bli Jousters, and although they went down 2-0 were in no way disgraced. Excellent goalie work by Luke Poulton and Jay Medhurst kept the Jousters score low and, although Noosa were unlucky not to score, kept the pressure on the entire match. Mid-fielder Jack Pearce was outstanding once again and took home Player of the Match.
SIX Sunshine Coast girls have been selected for the U14 QLD Water Polo team. From left, Eva Kharouni, Maddy Foster, Gabby Emerick and Liberty Smith, along with Alessia Cerasani and Kasey Dalziel will compete at The East Coast Challenge competition in Adelaide in July.

The Fiona Winter Realty/ PJ Burns Noosa Tigers went down by a single point against fourth placed Kedron last Saturday in Brisbane in what was a highly competitive QFA North division encounter. Right from the outset in was evident that the game was going to be up for grabs with Kedron always leading a contest with not much in it at all. Kedron, of course, keen to stay in touch with the top three and Noosa keen to consolidate second spot at the half way point of the season. The standard of footy was exactly what any footy follower would expect from a game where second meets fourth and while Kedron held sway for most of the first five quarters, only two goals separated the two sides at the final change before the Tigers started to get it on their terms. Noosa actually hit the front twice throughout the final term however the home side eventually came up trumps by the smallest of margins. Noosa club icon and life member Doug Murray said: ‘It
could of easily of gone either way. Kedron did a great job on quelling star vice-captain David Welch and we didn’t need to lose young-gun Jai Fitzpatrick half way through the game.” “They used the footy well by hand and foot, the Kedron boys, and all in all was a great game of local footy to watch. We just didn’t get there in the end,” he said. The tigers were well served again by Riley Buntain, Dillon Dempsey and Shane Davis who consistently influence Noosa games. Jack Hendrie and Joshy Reichman continue their recent top form to again be among the Tigers’ best while young Jesse
Malthouse was impressive from a wing once again. Certainly no panic stations for the now third-placed Tigers as they go into the bye Queens Birthday weekend before being back at home to cellar-dwellers Caboolture on Saturday week. In all seriousness, the Tigers should look forward to the return of key players Cubby Isles, Brett Duke, Isaac Hughson and Tommy McKittrick after the break as take a home game against rivals, Maroochydore and Caloundra. A top win by the reserves against a very formidable Kedron last weekend which I’m sure pleased Coach Rob Purvis as the reserves build in their attempt for a top three finish by season’s end.
As mentioned earlier, a week off for most Noosa boys this weekend with rep footy becoming the centre piece. From all reports, Dillon Dempsey, Riley Buntain, Tommy McKittrick and David Welch were squad selections from the Tigers so best of luck to those boys and we know they will do the Noosa FC and themselves proud. Don`t forget our fourth President’s Lunch Saturday week as the tigers hit Caboolture with prominent international speaker, ex-North Melbourne part-owner and president of 13 years, and Noosa local, Bob Ansett as our special guest. Don`t miss the fantastic luncheon. What a terrific way to warm up for the footy.
Still good as gold RICHARD MURRIHY WELL, I got to see three games this weekend the 12 Gold, 14 Gold and the 16 Blues. The two Gold teams both gave their all but fell down a bit stopping the opposition wall while the 16s seemed to be doing just enough to keep Kawana at bay to take a win. Special mention to the Buntains who goal umpired, time kept, team managed and carried water in the 12s, then Brett carried water for the 14s. Also to Tallis who stepped up and helped the 14s with numbers. The results are as follows: 16
Blue goals: Z. Jenkins 3, R. Tarling 2, R. Gordon, T. Collins, T. Cooney, B. Bowering, M. Mano, A. Thomas. Best: B. Bowering, T. Jeffs, M. Mano, R. Tarling. 14 Gold goal: N. Evans. Best: T. Buntain, Riley Murrihy, A. Harborshon, S. Robertson, S. Davis. 12 Gold goal: J. Hallam. Best: L. Reeve, K. Wood, S. Findlay, M. Enright, T. Buntain, L. Maxwell. The under-11s had a win and a loss and this looks like a good age group for the future. The 14 Blues had a loss with a few players not turning up. Goals: J. Brain 5, L. Haines 2, J. Mogg. Best: R. Modini, L. Haines, W.
McKenzie, J. Brain, L. Kennedy, M. Pettigrove. The 15 girls had a loss. Best: T. Raeburn, B. Caple, C. Lewis-Boyer, E. Stewart, H. Strelow, K. Wilson. The 18 girls lost a close one. Goals: M. Gordon 3, G. Kenrick 2, C. McDonald, P. Valstar. Noosa Red under-8s travelled away to Maroochydore this week for a tough game. Everyone in the team worked together this week. Our team shared the ball around and defended well. Our main goal scorers this week were Jason Jordan, Jett Kiely, Jack Lafferty and Zane Rinaldi. In the third quarter the defence was under constant pressure and the backline led by

Luis Brouwer, Jett Kiely and Jack Lafferty defended well, great effort from these boys stopping a number of goals. The team spirit award went to Zane Rinaldi and the hot shot award went to Jason Jordan. Special mention to Lewis Brouwer for a great game, he never gives up and worked hard for the whole four quarters. The under-10s’ game proved physical but Noosa Reds showed good strength against a very good Maroochydore team. Taj Butterworth the team’s only goal kicker and Ethan Slaney who played a strong first half, proved worthy winners of the awards. Best: Ethan Slaney, Taj Butterworth and Alex Maxwell.

Fast track to China By MICHELLE MOORE NOOSA athlete Jordan Csabi will be burning up the track on the world stage later this year. One of 90 young athletes heading to the Youth Olympics in China in August as part of the 2014 Australian Youth Olympic Team, Jordan has been selected to compete in the 200m. He was also selected to represent Australia and compete in the 100m and 200m at the Oceania Championships in Raratonga, Cook Islands, in June but has chosen to focus his energy on the Youth Olympics. Earlier this year, Jordan, 17, became the Australian U18 200m Cham-
pion as well as claiming bronze in the U18 100m at the Australian Athletics Championships. It was those winning performances that brought him to the attention of national selectors for the Youth Olympics and Oceanic Championships. “During the national championships in March this year, it was always in the back of my mind that I could qualify for the Youth Olympics in Nanjing,” Jordan said. “Although at the time, I was just focusing on doing my best time, regardless of the outcome.” Jordan’s coach and Little Athletics Noosa’s head coach Mick Hooper will also be making his way to Nanjing in
August. Although not part of the official coaching personnel for the Australian team, Mick has been invited to be there to provide support and advice to Jordan during pre-race and warmup sessions. “Knowing that my coach Mick will be there to support me in Nanjing will be great as he is always a calming influence,” Jordan said. “To be representing Australia at the Youth Olympics is just an awesome reward for all the hard work that I and my coaches (from Little Athletics Noosa) have put in over the last year,” Jordan said. Jordan’s family are also looking forward to the trip to Nanjing in Au-

gust. “We are so very proud of Jordan and his achievements in athletics,” Trisha Stephens, his mother, said. “Jordan has sacrificed so much to get to this point in his career, and we are all looking forward to cheering him on from the stands.” To help fund Jordan’s journey to the Youth Olympics in August, Little Athletics Noosa is seeking sponsorships and will be holding a series of fund-raising barbecues. THE Noosa River to Reef Family Fishing Classic has come and gone for another year, and from all reports it was the best one yet. In total, there was nearly $80,000 in prizes given away throughout the weekend, with 2 x boats, 2 x kayaks and a heap of other various prizes which were selflessly donated by local businesses everywhere. On the fishing front, there was a lot of fish caught throughout the weekend, with both fish from the estuary and offshore being represented by some cracking captures. The river fished well over the weekend, with flathead, whiting and bream being the most popular catches. According to all reports, the river mouth has been holding some of the better fish, especially if you can get there early in the morning. Speaking of early morning fishing, Woods Bay and Noosa Sound have been firing for the trevally and tailor, with surface walkers and poppers taking the best fish. On the offshore scene, mackerel and tuna are still thick around the wider reefs, especially for those trolling deep diving hard-bodied lures. The bottom fishing has been very good for those with the bigger vessels, who can head out to places like the Hards, North Reef and the Barwon Banks with good snapper, sweetlip and pearl perch also on the menu; it can really make the trip worthwhile. The beach has also been performing well, with some nice tailor starting to show up. The large winter bream are also sharing that deeper water with the tailor; so look for those gutters and holes when heading up the beach.
