wonders to warm the heart AUTUMN leaves are falling, and winter is only a hop, skip and a jump away. It’s the perfect time of year to snuggle up by the fire and feast on the Devonshire teas that this region is so well known for. A great way is to warm up by wandering through the local stores. There is something magical about the Yarra Ranges at this time of year. The foggy mornings, the chilly afternoons - it all makes you feel that you are in a whole new world. This winter, why not wander through Wandin, meander along the Warburton Highway or keep warm while enjoying the arts. Whatever your interests, this region has you covered. We had a fantastic time with local girls Breanna and Addyson shooting the cover in Healesville. I’m off to read a book by the open fireplace, while indulging in some delicious treats. THE Warburton Highway and the Warburton Rail Trail connect the small rural townships of Wandin and Seville for thousands of visitors each year. However, for those who go offtrack there’s much more to discover in the hills and valleys of this historic partnership. Winter is the perfect time to explore the pioneering history of the region, enjoy a coffee or a wine beside a blazing log fire or take a stroll through the farmlands that are bookmarked on the rail trail by the two towns that provide a gateway to the Upper Yarra. Take a day or two to enjoy Tourist News’ top five suggestions for a winter escape in Seville and Wandin.

3

Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead Those who have ever wondered how the pioneers lived more than 100 years ago can take a trip back in time at Mont De Lancey. Wandin’s earliest brick homestead and its gardens have been fully restored. Descendants of the pioneer families will bring local history alive. There is a working blacksmith forge, a museum, art gallery, shop and restaurant. Wellington Road, Wandin. Visit www.montdelancey.com.au

4

Wineries MANY are off the beaten track but those who dare to explore a little will find a treasure trove of wineries and vineyards, most offering spectacular views over the district’s iconic rolling farmlands. Each has its own identity offering an experience that embraces everything from a rich café culture to fine wines and exemplary local produce to music and games to play. Visit www.wineriesyarravalley.com.au

Country Football

The Rail Trail WHETHER starting at Seville or Wandin, the 3.4 kilometre section of the Warburton Rail Trail is one of the prettiest sections of the 39km trail. Bookmarked by the Rotary Rotunda at Wandin offering information on the township and the Carriage Café at Seville with a deviation down into the township, the trail takes travellers through farmland which is rich with birdlife. The gentle gradient makes it ideal for all levels of fitness and for families. Visit www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au

4 WINTER 2014

“CARN the Doggies” ... “Go Blues”* For a taste of real, grass-roots football - the hot pies, coffee or a cold beer from the canteen and passionate supporters, a local footy match is a great way to spend a chilly ‘Satdy arvo’**. This isn’t the pristine Etihad or MCG stuff where the ground is manicured, the best view is on the big screen and the shorts stay white from first bounce to last. This is old-school footy with all the fun, fans and fervour and where families can still afford the entry fee. Visit www.yvmdfl.com.au for Wandin and Seville match fixtures. * Wandin Bulldogs/Seville Blues **Australian slang - Saturday afternoon

Warratina Lavender Farm THIS is one of those ‘hobby that grew’ stories. From a small plot of lavender to a farm that now has more than 10,000 lavender plants, Warratina is a lavender experience from the plant to the final product, be it lavender scones or high-grade lavender oil. There are seasonal activities from harvest to production and in winter the tea rooms offer a warm haven enhanced by the tastes and scents of lavender. Visit www.warratinalavender.com. au or call in at 105 Quayle Road, Wandin Yallock.

healesville All aboard the historic Walker RM22 Railmotor at the Yarra Valley Railway! Pictures: JESSE GRAHAM

Views roll along the winter valley By JESSE GRAHAM A trip on the Yarra Valley Railway provides unique winter views of the valley. The railway will be running its historic Walker RM22 Railmotor from the Healesville Railway Station to Tunnel Hill each Sunday, with seven trips departing daily. The Walker will take visitors across the Watts River, under the Donovan’s Road over-bridge and through a tunnel at TarraWarra Estate, before heading back in a 45 minute round trip. Yarra Valley Railway (YVR) vice-president Brett Whelan said the fully-enclosed Walker offers protection from the wintery coldness outside, while providing passengers with a unique view of the area. “They’ll see kangaroos out the back of Donovan’s Road, halfway along the line,” he said. “In winter, it’s quite interesting, because the dams are quite full and the grass is green.” Being a seasonal area, Mr Whelan said that the Yarra Valley has a different look for each season, with the colder months offering foggy mornings and wet pastures, along with an opportunity to rug up and see the scenery unfold through the windows of the train. “With the view, because you’re facing one way, you get to see everything in the direction towards Yarra Glen and coming 6 WINTER 2014

back you’ll see it the other way - you get a full view,” Mr Whelan said. “You’ll get to sit up the front if you get in fast enough, next to the driver and see from the driver’s perspective, which is nice.” The Yarra Glen to Healesville section of the railway is being redeveloped by YVR volunteers and contractors in an effort to restore the line between the two towns.

Yarra Valley Railway vicepresident Brett Whelan said the railway offers a unique view of the Yarra Valley in winter.

As part of the redevelopment, Yarra Glen Railway Station is being reconstructed and trains are estimated to run between Yarra Glen and Healesville around 20162017. Trips on the Yarra Valley Railway depart from Healesville every hour from 10am-4pm on Sundays and public holidays, and Wednesday and Sundays on school holidays. Fares are $9 for children, $13 for concession holders, $15 for adults and $39 for families of two adults and two children. healesville

A year to

remember

By ANEEKA SIMONIS

Residents are also being invited to frock up for the Mid-Winter Masquerade Ball.

CELEBRATING its rich history and booming future, Healesville is abuzz as the town marks its milestone anniversary - 150 years.

Hosted at the Healesville Memorial Hall on Saturday 28 June, the night is sure to be full of laughter, music, dancing and joy with a mask-making workshop being held at the hall a fortnight beforehand.

From street parades and masquerade balls through to music and film festivals, the town’s year-long birthday celebration is going to be one to be remembered.

The Yarra Ranges Film Society will be running a mini film festival over November to celebrate the town’s rich past.

Considered the heart of the Yarra Valley, Healesville was first surveyed as a town in 1864.

Bringing together historical footage from national film archives, the State Film Centre and the District Historical Society, viewers will be proud to watch all that has contributed to their humble town.

Vibrantly flourishing, the town soon became a point of attraction - boasting a number of guest houses for visitors to soak up the gorgeous mountain surroundings. Healesville now plays home to a number of internationally renowned tourist attractions including Healesville Sanctuary, the Yarra Valley Tourist Railway, and Maroondah Reservoir along with world class wineries and gourmet food producers. However long they have been in the town, residents are encouraged to take part in the explosion of events throughout the year. While official celebrations for Healesville’s

150th anniversary will be held from 8-23 of November, community volunteers will be coordinating events across the entire year to commemorate the rich history of the town. Local creatives will open their studio doors to the community in mid-September for a unique behind-the-scenes look at the people, spaces, ideas and processes that inspire the Yarra Valley’s most talented art.

Healesville’s annual Music Festival has shifted dates to coincide with the anniversary, 14-16 November, and will promise a weekend of fun as local musicians and national touring artists perform beneath the gum trees of the Great Dividing Range. For more information about Healesville’s 150th anniversary celebration events, visit the calendar at healesville150.org/calendar-ofevents/.

Leafy gardens show luscious glory By MONIQUE KUZEFF The Dandenong Ranges is home to a range of magnificent luscious gardens including the unique George Tindale Memorial Garden. Situated in leafy Sherbrooke, the George Tindale Memorial Garden is a short distance away from the Alfred Nichols Gardens, making Sherbrooke the perfect stop-over for visitors who are travelling through the hills. Large mountain ash trees are found throughout the garden sheltering the beautiful variety of flowers and plants. The garden flourishes with a plethora of rare and exotic flowers which are significant to the garden’s history. Agricultural scientist George Tindale established the garden to help his scientific research for the Victorian Department of Agriculture. After purchasing the 8.4 acre property in 1958, his sculptor wife Ruth helped him plant striking flowers including the vibrant rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias and ornamented it further with her own decorative sculptures. After George’s death in 1977, Ruth maintained the gardens to foster her husband’s legacy. In 1980 she gave the garden to the Victorian Conservation Trust and the A blossomed Department of Conservation and hydrangea at George Environment opened it to the public Tindale Gardens. to commemorate George Tindale. The variety of flowers change with each season and throughout winter visitors can expect to find the lenten rose and hellebore.

wonderland

Get reel in Warburton in June. Pictures: KATH GANNAWAY

By KATH GANNAWAY YES, it’s cold in Warburton in winter. There’s the cocoon of mountains drawing down the mists, the icy head-waters of the Yarra River pounding through the town and the majestic snow-covered Mount Donna Buang just 15 minutes away. It’s a town that absolutely celebrates the winter chill both indoors and out. It’s no coincidence that the Warburton Film Festival is held in June. The three-day festival, now in its 31st year, attracts film buffs from near and far to enjoy Australian and international films in the cosy Mecca Theatre. There’s really no reason to even venture outdoors – just park the scarf and gloves and make the most of the opportunity to relax and enjoy film after film. Or, pick and choose the films and step out in between for a brisk stroll along the river walks, check out the local shops, or chill out at one of the many great cafes and restaurants. For families, snow-play on Mount Donna Buang is a great way to experience the ‘winter wonderland’ of snowcapped trees, building a snowman, snowball fights and tobogganing. Make time to stop at the Rainforest Gallery on the way to the snow. The 40-metre long observation platform takes visitors into the rainforest canopy 15 metres above the ground. A 350 metre walkway takes visitors down into the rainforest where they are surrounded by oldgrown mountain ash, ancient myrtle beech, ferns, mosses and other rainforest plants along Cement Creek. Outdoors, fish the Yarra River, tee off at the picturesque Warburton Golf Club or set off on foot or bike to explore the Warburton Rail Trail and the O’Shannassy Trail. While there’s plenty to do in Warburton in winter, visitors will also find that it’s quite OK to do nothing at all. Pack some books and favourite DVDs or dust off some board games and just snuggle in at a cosy B&B for some ‘me’ time in wonderful, wintry Warburton. For information about events and activities in Warburton visit www.warburtoninfo.com.au or phone 5966 9600.

WINTER 2014 13

Orchids bring out their bright colours By REBECCA BILLS THROUGHOUT winter, the glorious nurseries scattered throughout the hills have delightful plants and produce to enthral garden lovers over the cooler months. And B&T Ferns and Orchids will be hosting its 16th Annual Winter Miracles Orchid Show at the Silvan based nursery – an annual event on the Victorian Orchid Show Calendar. Nursery owner Mark Finnigan said the annual orchid show provides the general public with the opportunity to see orchids grown by Victoria’s leading orchid growers. “Orchid flowering and its array of colours, sizes and shapes continues until late in the year and this show offers the hobby grower the opportunity to obtain seedlings or larger plants sourced from some of Australia’s leading hybridists,” he said. “The show schedule provides orchid growers with a range of show classes that cater for a broad range of orchid genera. “The two-day show sponsored by Yarra Valley Orchid Society and held at our nursery is well attended by hobby growers and the general public keen to see the show benches, swap yarns, pick brains and purchase that something special.” Mr Finnigan said plant entries are accepted from any orchid enthusiasts wishing to participate providing them with the opportunity to win one of the 13 major champion awards as judged by The Orchid Societies Council of Victoria (OSCOV) members in attendance on the first day of the show. Mr Finnigan said his business has evolved over some 15 years and three years ago was relocated to the current site in Silvan to allow for expansion. The nursery carries Victoria’s largest range of Australian native orchid species, hybrids, orchid genera, bromeliads, grass, trees, vireyas, stags, elks, ground ferns and tree fern varieties accessible to the general public. Yarra Valley Orchid Society 16th Annual Winter Miracles Plant and Orchid Fair is on Saturday 19 July from 9am to 4.30pm and Sunday 20 July from 9am to 4pm. Free entry to the public and exhibitors with ample parking, barbecue and light refreshments stall for all to enjoy. B&T Ferns and Orchids is located at 30 Wiseman Road, Silvan. For more information about the show, call Mark or Jane Finnigan on 9737 9354 during business hours.

ARTS

Talents put

classics on track By REBECCA BILLS IN THE sublime settings of the Yarra Ranges’ best performance spaces, Classical Tracks 2014 brings together a collection of superb classical music shows. With the bitterly cold winter days upon us, the Yarra Ranges Fine Music Program for winter, as part of the Cultural Tracks Program, brings together some of the best classical music in Australia. Each Sunday afternoon throughout the season some of the best known classical ensembles and performers from around Australia will be showing off their talents including the Melbourne Guitar Quartet, Australian Octet, ACO Virtual and the Nicholas Chamber Orchestra. One performer who opened the Culture Tracks Program earlier this year was Bach by Candlelight performer Chris Howlett who gave attendees a taste of what the program has to offer. Howlett’s candle-lit, wintry night performances of this concert in Europe was met with incredible responses and offers audience members here in Australia a unique experience that verges on surreal. With just Howlett, his cello, music and light, the depth and elegance of the music is brought into sharp relief. The all-encompassing Classical Tracks program features 13 special performances across six venues - Burrinja Cultural Centre, The Memo, Montrose Town Centre, Mooroolbark Community Centre, the Arts Centre and Yarra Ranges Regional Museum. There is something for everyone, whatever their taste in classical music. The Classical Tracks Season commences on Sunday 1 June and runs through to Sunday 14 September. For more information on the Classical Tracks program or to purchase tickets, visit www.culturetracks.info.

Warm bites are perfect take-away GROWN in Australia for more than 100 years, they are that extra special treat roasted on an open fire as a satisfying winter treat. With signs along the tourist roads leading the way to suppliers and the familiar smell of roadside chestnuts, roasting stalls are synonymous with the cooler months throughout the hills community. According to Chestnuts Australia, it is widely believed that the first chestnuts trees were brought to Australia by the Chinese with the first recorded plantings of the tree dating

back to the 1850s and ’60s during the gold rush era. But what makes up the delicious treat? Chestnut Australia said the nuts have two skins – one is the hard outer shiny brown shell and the other is the inner thin skin known as the pellicle. President Adam Gatford said chestnuts are unique in the way they are gluten free, contain no fat, have low GI and no cholesterol. “Chestnuts are very versatile – they can be used in savoury and sweet recipes or eaten as a delicious snack on their own.”

When selecting, Mr Gatford said that the firmer chestnuts feel, the fresher they will be. “Look for even sized nuts which feel heavy for their size, with undamaged, firm shells,” he said. “To avoid chestnuts drying out, store in an airtight container, paper bag, perforated plastic bag or a specially marked ‘chestnut storage bag’ in the crisper compartment of the refrigerator.” Chestnuts are best consumed within three weeks of purchase.

Cafe gets salute for

achievement

By REBECCA BILLS LOCATED on the banks of the Yarra River is the delectable Warrandyte Café. With the smell of freshly ground coffee beans, it’s the perfect weekend spot to catch up with friends and enjoy the buzz of the café in the charming town. Warrandyte Café is named in The Coffee Army Handbook 2012 as one of the top 100 places to get coffee in and around Melbourne. Owner Tammy Cromwell said staff were proud of the achievement. “Considering there is a café on nearly every corner of Melbourne we are very happy to be named in the top 100,” she said. Tammy used to be a customer at the peaceful riverside café and bought it five years ago. “It’s been around for about 14 years,” she said. “It’s very laid back, we love dogs coming and we’ve even had horses here in the past,” she said. “It has a very rural and country feel here and really caters for everyone.” All food is cooked fresh on the premises with love and the varied menu caters for all tastes and preferences at a reasonable price. Warrandyte Café is located at 61 Yarra Street, Warrandyte, and is open Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, Saturday 8am to 5pm and Sunday 8am to 5pm.

Taste journey to warmer climates By JESSE GRAHAM WINTER in the Yarra Valley can get cold and it can get rainy. Those looking to escape the harsh winds can make their way to Tokar Estate Winery and Restaurant to warm their bellies and tantalise their tastebuds. The restaurant, which is located on Maddens Lane in Coldstream, offers a range of specialty foods from Spain, Italy and France matched with the estate’s own wines to make a perfect combination. General manager Rita Tokar said the winter menu at the restaurant will be an absolute contrast to the Yarra Valley’s typically dreary season’s weather and will warm up those who come to visit. “The warming aspect of the winter menu will not only tantalise the palate but will take you on a culinary journey throughout the Mediterranean,” she said. Ms Tokar said that between the magnificent views at the estate, which feature vineyards and rolling hills and the delightful food on offer, the restaurant has something for everyone to enjoy. “With this view and the elegant ambiance of the restaurant, it is the ideal place to enjoy a leisurely lunch with family and friends or that romantic dinner for two,” she said. “Under the watchful eye of head chef Neil Howatt and his vibrant team, the winter menu at Tokar Estate will be anything but bleak.” The highlight of the winter months at Tokar Estate will be the restaurant’s annual Spanish Night which features dishes from different regions of Spain, Spanish flamenco dancers and musicians, and the release of the estate’s new Tempranillo range of wine. The Spanish Night will be held on the last Saturday of winter – 30 August – and budding diners are urged to book early for the extravaganza. Tokar Estate Winery and Restaurant is located at 6 Maddens Lane, Coldstream. For more information on the Spanish Night or Tokar’s range of wines, call 5964 9585.

By REBECCA BILLS NESTLED in the picturesque countryside of Wandin Yallock is the quaint Warratina Lavender Farm. Set among the rolling hills, the farm is just one hour’s drive from Melbourne. It opened its doors in 1991 and owner Annemarie Manders decided to grow a little plot of lavender on land which had been an old cherry orchard. “It started off as a hobby but with my enthusiasm and energy I decided after 18 months we would pull out the old orchard and plant out the property with lavender,” Annemarie said. “I didn’t know what I was doing but I was just really enjoying it.” Annemarie said the farm is home to two types of lavender – angustifolia and intermiedia, which is also known as Dutch lavender. Annemarie said a special addition to the farm is the tea rooms which offer a lovely ambience and special lavender tea and scones. “It’s another way people can experience lavender,” she said. “You only use a very small amount when cooking and it’s a very subtle flavour.” The lavender on the farm is also grown for craft and household purposes and is harvested by hand using a traditional sickle. These bunches are then taken to the drying shed on the property and hung to dry before being stripped on the stripping machine and used in the different ways. Warratina Lavender Farm is at 105 Quayle Road, Wandin Yallock, and is open Wednesday to Monday from February to September from 10am to 5pm. For more information about the farm, visit www. warratinalavender.com.au or phone 5964 4650.

Cosy up by the fire at Warburton Lodge.

Market goers enjoying the longest running Victorian Farmers market at Yering Station.

Region’s produce all under one roof By REBECCA BILLS SITUATED in the barn of the iconic Yering Station is the longest running market in Victoria. Founded more than 12 years ago, the Yarra Valley Regional Food Group Farmers’ Market is humming with shoppers on the third Sunday of each month. The hustle and bustle of this community market is filled with friendly faces, mouth-watering produce and creative crafts that capture the very essence of what the Yarra Valley has to offer. Market organiser Francis Caltieri said it’s a one-stop shop where visitors can purchase all their gourmet delights, meet the producer, grower and maker all in the one setting. “It’s a traditional indoor market set in an absolutely beautiful location,” she said. “You know everything here is fresh, of good quality and, on average, each market sees anywhere from 1500 to 3000 people walk through.” The market came about after the Yarra Valley Regional Food Group wanted to utilise the barn on Yering Station. “This makes it an all-weather market and it is the only market in this area that the product is all grown in the area,” Ms Caltieri said. “There is plenty of parking and there is no entry fee to visit.” For more information on the market, visit www.yearing.com/famersmarket.

By KATH GANNAWAY WHETHER heading out for a long lunch, looking for somewhere to warm up after a brisk walk, or snuggling up after a day on the toboggan run, nothing says “come on in” quite like the warmth of an open fire. It’s an aspect of winter that sets the scene for wonderful memories that are less about excitement and adventure and more about those times where just being together with friends and family, or perhaps with friendly strangers, makes for wonderful memories. There’s something authentic about an open fire place and they remain a feature of many older pubs, restaurants, cafes and B&Bs. They are also regaining popularity as a drawcard in some of the more modern accommodation and food venues in places such as Warburton, Olinda and Marysville, Toolangi and Healesville where winter visitors look to take advantage of a chance of scenery in a winter environment. The crackle of logs and the mesmerising flames are the perfect setting for a winter break where taking the time to read a book, watch the latest films – or some old favourites – indulge in a steaming spa-bath or catch up with friends is just the pick-up that is needed when the days are shorter and it’s time to hibernate a little! A blazing fire provides a warm welcome for visitors to Toolangi Tavern. Picture: KATH GANNAWAY
