Subdivide or sell By MELISSA MEEHAN FOR Lang Baulch’s parents, the ability to subdivide their property is the difference between staying in the community and being forced to move away. The Mount Evelyn resident says without the ability to split their land, they have no other choice. This week Yarra Ranges residents should have received a letter from the council asking for their views in relation to possible changes to the Low Density Residential Zone proposed by the State Government. The changes would reduce the minimum subdivision size for new lots from 4000 square metres (one acre) to 2000 square metres (half an acre) pro-
vided the lot is connected to reticulated sewerage and not a septic system. The application for a subdivision would still need to go to council and be granted a permit. Mr Baulch said while only seven per cent of homes in the Yarra Ranges would be able to take advantage of the changes, it was important that the council supported it. “It wouldn’t affect neighbourhood character,” he said. “But it would allow for more continuity in terms of towns.” He said in some towns there were smaller lots beside bigger properties that were scattered through the Ranges. “For example in Old Hereford Road in Mount Evelyn, there are many
smaller lots beside my parents’ place,” he said. “So for them to subdivide, it would only mean one extra house and wouldn’t affect the neighbourhood.” He said it was important that these changes were passed, saying that it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity for it to happen. “We have an aging population, especially in Mount Evelyn,” he said. “To be able to give these older residents an opportunity to be able to stay in their community, keep their links with friends and family, without causing any real changes to the neighbourhood - I think it’s a wonderful idea.” Upwey resident and man about town Peter Marke said the proposed
changes were an excellent idea. “Hopefully it will enable older people to divide their property and stay here - it’s certainly a fantastic idea,” he said. “It’s good for Upwey, at least in terms of sustainability for the town.” He said Upwey and other towns were crying out for something like this, and now that the council had the opportunity they should take it with both hands. “Unfortunately the size of the allotments are still a little big,” he said. “There are only a few larger blocks that it applies to. “Where it applies is a good thing. But the council needs to take it a step further.

60th shines of diamonds By REBECCA BILLS AFTER five years of WW2 service, including time in Papua New Guinea, Allan Thompson’s sister Faye decided it was time he found a wife. And after bringing various friends home she thought Mr Thompson might like his now wife, Alice. She was the one who caught his eye and over a half a century later still has his heart. Married in 1954, the couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last Thursday. “We were married in a little bluestone church in central Victoria where I was from,” Mrs Thompson said. “Being married in a church, I promised God that I would love Allan and look after him until Picture: ROB CAREW the day I die.

“So that’s what I thought I would do. It hasn’t been a great problem.” The Silvan South couple said after five children and losing count of the number of grandchildren, they live a simple life on the farm they have had together all their married life. Mr Thompson said he moved to Wiseman Street in Silvan South 89 years ago with his family at age four. “We moved up here from Sandringham onto a bush block on top of the hill - I’ve been here ever since,” he said. Mrs Thompson says one of the best things about Mr Thompson is his sense of humour - even though it “has slipped a bit in recent years”. “You need lots of love and patience for it to last this long,” she said.

POLICE are pleading with motorists to lock their cars, whether parked in the driveway, in your garage or on the street. Lilydale CIU Detective Sergeant Allan Price said that there had been a number of thefts from cars in the Upwey, the 1000 Steps and The Basin areas and said more than 50 per cent of the cars had unlocked doors. “We keep reminding people to do this, but again we find that often the doors aren’t locked and valuables are left in full sight,” Det Sgt Price said. “People need to ensure they are doing all the little things to protect them from thieves.” Anyone with information is asked to contact Lilydale CIU on 9739 2300.

Ms Yates said the program also helped students find their place in the community. Mount Evelyn Primary School Assistant Principal Cathy Sanders welcomed the Year 7 students into the school and said the Prep students got a lot out of the program in terms of building relationships with older students. “We have a buddy program here with the Grade 5s so we see that connection with older students really important here,” she said. “One of our school values is that sense of community and extending
BELGRAVE police have charged a 39-year-old Tecoma man with serious assault after three attacks on another man. Leading Senior Constable Dignis Kameon said the attacks left the victim with a broken nose, broken ribs and punctured lungs. The man has been remanded and will face the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 13 June.
Take care on roads MOUNT Evelyn police have asked drivers to be careful on wet roads. They have been called to a few crashes when someone has lost control on a bend in wet conditions. Police are also warning drivers at the lights near Wray Crescent to not rush to beat the lights.

Church thieves CALLOUS thieves have broken into a Lilydale church. Lilydale CIU Detective Sergeant Allan Price said the Castella Street St John’s Anglican Church was entered between 2 and 5 June, through an unlocked door. Items stolen include PA equipment, a chalice, crucifix and candlestick holder. Det Sgt Price said that police were investigating a link to a burglary at the nearby Lilydale Historical Society building. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lilydale CIU on 9739 2300 or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
beyond the school community to the wider community.” Ms Yates said the Community Connections program was run over the whole year, with one session per week held on a Thursday morning. “Students really love their excursions and getting out of the classrooms,” she said. “They have visited a local fire brigade and volunteered their time washing the trucks and learning about what the CFA do in the community as well as completed an owl walk to learn about the natural environment.”

Students getting connected YARRA Hills Year 7 students became teachers for the morning at Mount Evelyn Primary School last Thursday. As part of their Community Connections program, the students were partnered with a Prep student at the primary school to participate in reading exercises, as well as running a games activity in the school gym. Yarra Hills teacher Karan Yates said the program was part of a subject initiative at the school that leads into the World of Work program that takes place in the later years of high school. “It’s the first year that Community Connections has run at our school and it is designed to introduce students at a Year 7 level to the variety and diversity of things that exist out in the community that they may or may not be already aware of,” she said. “The program is here to try and increase the students’ awareness of organisations in the community that are acting on behalf of the community.”

PREP students at Mount Evelyn Christian School became doctors and nurses last Thursday as part of the Hospitals in Schools program. Prep teacher Jan Ormrod said the morning was full of rich learning experiences, including singing and dancing to songs about the body and a trip to the ‘MECS hospital’. “The junior doctors and nurses worked busily to fix the big rag doll patients,” she said. “The complicated surgeries required lots of bandages and bandaids.” Hospital’s in Schools co-ordinator Penny Turner said the program originated from her work at Monash Medical Centre to help children understand what happens in hospitals. “We saw a lot of children who were stressed about coming into hospital and as we were teacher-trained we decided to start a program,” she said. “When I left the hospital I took the program on as my own business. “We saw such a difference when children had had exposure to hospital and things they’d see. There was a big difference when they came into hospital and how they handled it.” Ms Turner says in her visits she discusses equipment children may see when they are in hospital, talks about how they feel about hospitals and tries to alleviate any unnecessary fear that

Reconciliation and moving on SOME years have passed since I last wrote on Reconciliation in the Mail papers, but a quick glance over the five years that I did write, brought my thoughts together for this article. I started writing not long after the genesis of the push that led to former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s apology in the Australian Parliament and the huge march for reconciliation across the Bolte Bridge. In ’02, I joined the Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville as chaplain, and in ’07, committed to work with the shire on their Reconciliation Committee.
Focal
point Graeme Dawson Co-ordinator, Focal Point
Interestingly, my previous Mail topic titles progressed from, ‘Celebrations Born of Mourning’ in ’03, an awakening article about why we needed to reconcile and the sad history of our Indigenous peoples, to ‘Reconciliation 04 - Is it Working?’ A year
on since the ‘first flush’ of action had subsided, I wrote with a view to get things moving again so I wrote about forgiveness in general for life relationships and the fact that that needed to be worked out between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. In ’05 I encouraged readers to take ‘The Next Step’, followed by ‘It is a Challenge’ in ’06, looking at practical ways through. Then in ’08, an article on ‘The Mechanics of Reconciliation’, things that mechanically needed to be done to help reconciliation have the necessary legs to ‘walk’ with, and I finished that article with a great footy

coach’s famous words, in brief, “DO SOMETHING” (these articles can be accessed via www.focalpoint.org.au Mail Articles). Given that I believe true reconciliation needed to start with the young, a Primary Schools Indigenous Forum was set up with many local schools signing up. Of course this is going to take time to filter through - 10, 15 or 20 years before these young people will stand tall for and with Indigenous Australians as they are faced with social and community responsibility. So where are we now? Much work is continuing through various groups
and bodies in conjunction with the shire. A new framework for action has been instigated by the shire to take us to 2023. Much of this work is centering on the Indigenous way of communicating through culture, art and dance. Culture is seen to be fundamental to identity and art and dance as part of that helps strengthen ties with the land. We have come a long way in the last 15 years but we have a long way to go. Let us not get frustrated with an unseen destiny we dream about and plan for over the horizon, rather let us continue to be fellow travellers encouraging and supporting each other - on the journey.

Independent in election contest By JESSE GRAHAM A HEALESVILLE businessman and philanthropist has thrown his hat into the ring for the November State Election, announcing as an Independent candidate. The Mail can reveal that, as of today (Tuesday 10 June), Healesville’s Bruce Argyle will be an Independent candidate for the electorate of Eildon. Mr Argyle said that his aim was to emulate the election campaign of Indi Federal MP Cathy McGowan, who led a grassroots campaign last year to unseat then-MP Sophie Mirabella. He said he believed residents in the area had been “disillusioned” with the major parties in recent times. “People are looking for a strong community voice someone who actually consults with, listens to and represents their views, rather than toeing the party line,” he said. A member of the Save Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG), Mr Argyle said the hospital would be one of the focuses of his campaign in the Healesville region. SHHAG Chair and Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister - speaking personally and not on behalf of the council said she supported Mr Argyle’s nomination as a candidate. “I know Bruce will listen to people, consult with the com-

Other key issues include campaigning for more uniformity in speed signs along the Warburton highway, and putting pressure on the current government to expedite the gas supply pipeline. Public transport through the area was mentioned as a platform by Mr Argyle, though he said that he wanted to meet community members before making “rash promises”. However, he said that his full platform on issues would be developed after consulting with community members in each town in the electorate. He said that, even if he was
defeated in the election, he aimed to put important local issues firmly in the spotlight for the major parties, and to try to put on the pressure to generate improvements. The electorate of Eildon will be a new seat at this year’s election, taking in areas of the former electorates of Seymour and Gembrook in the Yarra Valley. Mr Argyle will be running against current Seymour MP, Cindy McLeish and Labor candidate, Sally Brennan. The Victorian Greens Party has not announced a candidate for the electorate. For more information on Mr Argyle’s policies, visit www. bruceargyle.com.au or email community@argyles.com.au.
NATIONAL Geographic Conservationist of the Year Jean Thomas called for a new type of dialogue between the logging industry and environmentalists at a meeting in Warburton last week. The public meeting hosted by Warburton Environment on World Environment Day, 5 June, put forward the vision and imperatives for the creation of a Great Forest National Park (GFNP) to protect the endangered Leadbeater’s Possum, carbon stocks and water supplies and to lower the risk of bushfires. The proposal would add 355,000 hectares of forest to the existing reserve of 170,000 hectares across Central Highlands. Ms Thomas, a Yarra Valley resident, was one of several speakers including My Environment president Sara Rees, Dr
Chris Taylor of the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute at Melbourne University, and Andrew Cox from the National Parks Association. “I stand here today as a conservationist, but also with respect for the logging industry,” she said. She drew a parallel with the work she and husband, Jim Thomas, did in Papua New Guinea where she said traditional hunting had put the Tenkile, a tree kangaroo on the edge of extinction. By providing the village populations with alternatives, and by working with them, she said people had stopped hunting the Tenkile and reversed its fate. “We said we respect the fact that you have been doing this for hundreds of years, but you are at a crossroads,” she said of the approach they took in PNG. “To just say you can’t do this

any more, and make enemies of these people, just would not have worked. “I think we are in that process here in the valley. We’re so used to it being a logging area, but I think we are at that crossroads and I think that is quite clear with the facts and figures given here today,” she said. Ms Rees said awareness and support for the creation of a GFNP was growing and spoke of the environmental and financial benefits, opportunities for corporate investment and potential tourist incentives such as a zip-line at Toolangi and the mountain bike trail proposed for Warburton. On a show of hands the more than 130 people overwhelmingly supported the GFNP, but Ms Rees urged everyone to go to the website, www.greatforestnationalpark.com.au and have a say.

These coats are the most By KATH GANNAWAY A COAT drive that has put hundreds of winter coats out into Yarra Valley communities has been an overwhelming success. The idea started in March, when Kerrie Siddle and the team at Yarra Valley Innate Chiropractic in Yarra Junction put out a call for coats. They flooded in, in a variety of shapes, colours, sizes and materials - but all, according to Ms Siddle in great condition. Ms Siddle, along with Dr Chloe Whiting and Dr Fiona Tadich delivered the coats to HICCI in Healesville, ADRA at the Redwood Centre in Warburton, LinkC in Yarra Junction, River Valley Centre in Millgrove and The Chapel in Castella Street, Lilydale. “The response really surprised us. We got hundreds of coats and have been overwhelmed by how generous everyone has been,” Ms Siddle said. While Innate is not taking in any more coats, they are topping up their distribution points and, with a lot of winter still ahead, are urging people to call in and choose a coat - no charge! Julia Sherar and Fiona Gilsenan from ADRA said they had noticed the turnover of coats over the past few weeks, indicating the Innate idea had
Letters Trees of trouble
Not buying local
AS YET another tree falls on the road, a significant enough event to warrant an interruption to ABC programming and a five kilometre tail-back on the Healesville-Kooweerup Road (luckily, noone was injured) isn’t it time the council reviewed its policy on roadside vegetation? The last time a similar incident occurred, your paper quoted a council official saying there were approximately five million roadside trees in the shire. That may be correct, however, the two or three hundred that are leaning at precarious angles all over the road are the ones that cause me concern. When they fall, it won’t be upwards. I am no arborist, but I do know that the canopy replicates the root system and when the root system is denied its natural water source (by bitumen) it reaches out and so does the drip line, thus making the tree lopsided and unstable. I am not proposing a complete clearing of roadside vegetation, just a common sense approach. Before any friends of a green persuasion write to decry my proposal and label me as a redneck, I have a water tank, solar, recycle and consider myself an environmentalist - one with common-sense. Aubrey Brough, Millgrove.
WITH the demise of the car industry and subsequent job losses, many people are asking why? Why nothing was done to save them? Why nothing was done to support them? Why the industry got itself in such a state? When I take a stroll down behind the Anderson Street Council headquarters in Lilydale, I ask myself why with at least seven local dealerships within 800 metres, the wrap-arounds on the number plates on the council-owned vehicles (our vehicles) advertise a German manufacturer, purchased from another shire, a vehicle purchased in Werribee and several other imported cars purchased outside the shire. I ask myself why, when the local dealerships are paying thousands and thousands of dollars in rates, the local council does not support them. I ask myself why, when the local dealerships are employing local ratepayers, the council does not support them. I ask myself why I am bothering to write this letter as the only result will be the council will probably remove the wrap-arounds and carry on ignoring the very hand that feeds them. Aubrey Brough, Millgrove.
All for a coffee
Julia Sherar and Fiona Gilsenan say the coat drive has been warmly welcomed at Warburton. 121740 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY really met a need in the community. Ms Siddle said the success of the campaign had got the team thinking of what they might be able to do around Christmas time, and possibly a blanket drive next winter. In the meantime the Innate
team will hold a ‘thankyou’ afternoon from 1pm to 3.30pm on Saturday, 21 June to show their appreciation for the great response. The afternoon tea will be at the Innate clinic at 2380 Warburton Highway, Yarra Junction.

I WOULD just like the other people to be aware of a large black BMW with an obnoxious woman driving. I was driving home from Melbourne along the Yarra Glen Road on Thursday, 5 June, at 11.30am. She tailgated me, flashing her lights. I was doing 90km per hour in a 100 zone. Then, just near Zozo’s, she passed me and suddenly slowed down so I had to brake hard, burning rubber or run off the road, my dog flying into the front seat. I went to the Mail to give her number plate to shame her, but it seems I can’t as she would have no right of reply - which I don’t understand. It would be her word against mine. I did not go to the police as “we did not see it so we cannot do anything”. On arriving in Healesville, she was sitting on her own drinking coffee. I know coffee is important, but, sorry ... so is my life. Mandy Barbour, Healesville.
Too commercial I’VE received many emails and comments about the ‘mock-up’ photo of the Healesville Railway Walk (Mail 20 May - Kudos for Path). How it looks very commercial; in fact far too commercial for our town. I’d like to inform everyone who voiced those concerns, it may appear that way in the photo. The cost (financial and time) for a graphic artist to create personal/family oriented pavers just for the ‘mock-up’ photo would just be ridiculous! Just to be sure, don’t wait or hesitate ... get your orders in ASAP. Order forms now available from Shire of Yarra Ranges Healesville link, and in your school newsletter. Robyn Johnson, Healesville.

Ball of a time with masks By JESSE GRAHAM PUT on your best mask and get ready for a night on the town, because a special mid-winter ball is only weeks away. On Saturday 28 June, the doors to Healesville’s Memo Hall will be opened for mask-wearing dance-goers, for a masquerade ball. The ball will begin at 8pm and run through until 11pm, with seven-piece swing band, Steve Purcell’s Pearly Shells Orchestra, playing three sets of old-time music for visitors to dance to. Michelle Redman is organising the event with Yarra Valley Arts, and said the idea came off the back of Healesville’s 150th birthday organisations. She said the focus of the night was simply to
get dressed up, put on a mask and have a great night out. “The aim is to dance,” she said. “The band hits the first notes and people will swamp (the floor) and dance. “There’s this whole energy about having a really good time, and my aim is to get back to the pure joy of it.” Ms Redman said the event is ‘BYO nibbles’, which pays homage to old-style balls where people would bring some food and drink to enjoy between the band’s sets. She said if the evening was a success, she would like to see the mid-winter ball become an annual event for the town. A workshop to assist residents in making their

own masquerade mask will be held at the Memo on 14 June from 11.30am-1.30pm, and all ballgoers are invited to come along. Materials for masks will be provided, and Ms Redman and other event organisers will assist people in creating masks, free of charge. The Healesville Mid-winter Masquerade Ball will be held on 28 June from 8pm at Healesville’s Memo Hall. BYO alcohol is not permitted, but alcohol will be available from the venue on the evening. Tickets are $42.50, and bookings are essential - to book tickets visit ach.yarraranges.vic.gov.au or call 1300 368 333. THE CLASSICAL Coomalie concert series will continue in Healesville this weekend, with the third concert bringing together a violinist and a pianist for a special, one-off show. Violinist Trisha Rose will join pianist Melanie Lee for a house concert on Sunday 15 June, beginning at 2.30pm and running through the rest of the afternoon. The duo will be performing a wide range of classics, including Winter by Vivaldi, The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams, Meditation from Thais and pieces from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Fitting in with the colder weather, Winter is said to portray the chills of an Italian blizzard contrasted with the warmth of a cosy fireplace. The upcoming concert is the latest instalment in the Concerts at Coomalie series, which will be running until October, featuring a different group or performer playing their speciality instruments. The owners of Coomalie, Brian and Ursula Blake, said they organised the series to help give young professional musicians exposure to a wider audience. According to Mr and Mrs Blake, the benefit is also to the community, which gets to experience classical music in an intimate house-concert setting. Mr Blake said the community had responded well to the concerts, with the first show in March almost filling its capacity with 55 music-loving residents. The capacity of the venue is 60. Entry to the 15 June concert is $25, or $20 for pensioners and full-time students. For more information, or to reserve tickets, call 5962 5350 or email coomalieconcerts11@gmail.com.
Joseph Guthrie looks over the 2014 program guide. 121748_02 Picture: ROB CAREW
ONE of the main things Yarra Ranges Film Society president Joseph Guthrie is looking forward to this week is catching up with film buffs like himself who come from all over Victoria to the Warburton Film Festival each year. Heading into its fourth decade, the film festival is a pilgrimage for locals and visitors to the Mecca Theatre at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre.
“It’s a bit of a reunion over the three days of people who enjoy the atmosphere and everything Warburton has to offer as well as the films,” Joseph said. The Show Us Your Shorts film competition is in its seventh year with films showing on the Friday and over the weekend before the main films. Highlights this year include the documentary Fall Out based around Neville Shute’s classic On The Beach. Producer Peter Kaufmann and director Law-
By KATH GANNAWAY TWO of Woori Yallock’s high profile community organisations went on show on Saturday 31 May, to highlight what is happening and what’s available to residents in the area. An Open Day and Market hosted by Woori Yallock Community House and Community Radio Yarra Valley FM 99.1 transformed the ‘little’ car park into a market, information and entertainment hub that attracted lots of local interest, and provided the opportunity for groups including the local CFA and Misfits Productions youth theatre and Hoddles Creek Red Cross to tell their story. Yarra Ranges Council O’Shannassy Ward
councillor Jim Child officially opened the event and urged people to take the time to visit the Community House, meet their experienced staff and take advantage of the services they provide. “The Woori Yallock community has kicked a few goals with the wonderful new WYTAG Reserve, the new Hillcrest fire station and many other projects we are working on to make the Woori Yallock community a very vibrant community,” he said. Cr Child also introduced inventor Michael Morrison who was promoting a new BioFuelcell compost system which will be officially launched at Healesville Community Garden on 29 June by celebrity chef Maggie Beer.

NOW SHOWING MALEFICENT
SPECIAL ADVANCE SCREENINGS THIS WEEKEND How To Train Your Dragon 2
COMING from Disney, Maleficent is an alarmingly dark, mature fairytale – and that’s what m akes it so good. A revisionist take on Disney’s 1959 film Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent gives the title character (played by Angelina Jolie) a tragic backstory as a powerful fairy betrayed and maimed by her lover Stefan (Sharlto Copley). She casts a sleeping curse on Stefan’s daughter Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) as an act of revenge for this betrayal. Jolie is phenomenal as Maleficent, perfectly balancing vindictiveness, regal dignity and glimmers of compassion. She’s sexy and terrifying, but you deeply sympathise with her painful experience. Fanning is bright and graceful as Aurora, and Cop-
ley is hypnotically sociopathic as King Stefan. After the gutwrenching first act, the film becomes more whimsical. Maleficent gradually bonds with Aurora, as she watches over her to ensure that she survives long enough for the curse to take hold. This may seem like an excessive tonal shift, but it’s all done quite smoothly, and Maleficent’s gradual redemption is uplifting. Maleficent re-examines and renounces the simplistic naivete of early Disney tropes – namely “true love’s first kiss” and absolute evil – and is thus one of the more human, nuanced movies Disney has made in decades. The film also has beautiful visual design (despite some poor CGI) and thrilling, violent battle scenes. Give this movie a chance, or you deserve a prick from a cursed spinning wheel.

Mouth-watering winter menus
The new team at Bulong Estate Pete, Steve and Matt. 121732 1138762-CA24-14
WINTER in the Yarra Valley usually means spending time at home in front of the fire and finding reasons not to go out. But the new management team at Bulong Estate would like you to sit in front of their fire and enjoy chef Steve Wilson’s wonderful winter menu. Steve is classically trained in French cuisine, but describes his food as clean and fresh, with many influences from Asia and other parts of Europe. Steve is very familiar with creating food that complements wine and beer having previously worked at Tarrawarra, Domaine Chandon and the Coldstream Brewery. He is now looking forward to working with long-time winemaker, Matt Carter, and his Upper Yarra wines. New restaurant manager Pete Mathewson has 35 years’ experience in the hospitality industry, starting out as a chef in St Kilda and Fitzroy in the ’80s. He then moved to Richmond to run the Anchor and Hope Tavern. In the late ’90s he moved to the Dandenongs and managed various restaurants in the Belgrave and Olinda area spending the past eight years managing Paperbark Cafe. Pete’s first addition to the Bulong restaurant was a coffee machine. His second addition was a fourth-year apprentice and Gladysdale local, Gemma Smith. Pete said that diners on Fridays at both lunch and dinner can enjoy a two- course meal for $35, and each table will receive a complementary bottle of Estate wine. “If you want to get home in time to see the start of the footy, book for early evening and let us know,” he said.

Uncle David Farrell, Garry Detez, Sam Halit, Shane Ryan, Cr Noel Cliff, Robynne White and, front, Cr Maria McCarthy, MP Cindy McLeish, Cr Len Cox, Aunty Dot Peters, Cr Samantha Dunn, mayor Fiona McAllister and Anne Jenkins all attended to talk about Reconciliation Week at Sanctuary House Picture: JESSE GRAHAM Resort Motel. 121783
Halfway reconciled By JESSE GRAHAM “WE are making positive steps, but there is a while to go.” This was the sentiment expressed by Yarra Ranges mayor Fiona McAllister, at a special Reconciliation Week Luncheon last week. The event was organised by the Yarra Ranges Council and the Yarra Ranges indigenous Advisory Committee, and was held at Healesville’s Sanctuary House Resort Motel. Cr McAllister spoke at the event, and said that, when thinking of stories that reflected reconciliation in the past year, she felt “both saddened and buoyed with optimism”. “The sadness comes from a sense that we have a long way to go on our walk to true reconciliation, equality and a unified nation,” she said.
“The optimism comes from what I see happening and in my personal experiences,” she said. Cr McAllister said Reconciliation Week was significant when looking at the past, while also forming future goals to close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. “We talk of recognition as a pathway and healing the past and moving forward, towards a future of respect, caring and sharing with all cultures living in harmony.” “Reconciliation Week is a moment in our year, where we specifically make time to reflect on, gather in friendship and partnership and talk about achieving - hopefully at some time in the future to celebrate - the achievement of a truly just, equal and unified Australia.” Cr McAllister, Seymour MP and Ei-
ldon candidate Cindy McLeish, Uncle David Farrell, Aunty Dot Peters, Miranda Madgewick and Robynne White all spoke on the importance of preserving and respecting Indigenous culture in Australia and in the Yarra Ranges. Uncle David agreed with Cr McAllister and said that work still needed to be done for all aspects of society to match up for Indigenous and nonIndigenous people. He said that racism still existed, and gave the example of young people shouting abuse out of moving cars when passing a traditional smoking ceremony. “We’ve still got a bit of a way to go in educating young people in our communities - I would have liked them to stop and have an understanding about what was taking place,” he said. “My
view on reconciliation? Yes, it’s there. “We need support on the political front, as well as the well-being front,” he said. The theme of this year’s Reconciliation Week is ‘Walk the Talk’, and Ms McLeish urged every person in the community to walk the talk of reconciliation and do their part to help close the gap. “I encourage everybody here to think about what they can do,” she said. “Who do you know? Who can you talk to? What can you say? How are you going to do it? “It’s one thing to talk the talk - walking the talk is different.” Reconciliation Week ran from 27 May to 3 June. For more information, visit www. reconciliation.org.au
It’s thanks all round at this breakfast By KATH GANNAWAY PEOPLE who have served communities in the Yarra Ranges were brought together on 31 May for a special ‘thankyou’ on the National Day of Thanksgiving. The annual thanksgiving breakfast hosted by Oxley Christian College was held at the Foothills Conference Centre and invited guests included volunteers and staff of numerous community and church organisations and local political representatives. Yarra Ranges mayor Fiona McAllister spoke of the contribution many in the community made in so many ways and often over many years. MC Randall Bourchier reflected on the contributions people made includ-
ing sacrificing time, money, skills, convenience and often personal safety in putting their lives on the line for the well-being of many. He presented inspiring, moving and often humorous mini-biographies of eight people chosen for special recognition - Roger Boness and Jan Simmons from Mount Evelyn, Cr Len Cox from Montrose, Keith Thomas from Warburton, Dorothy Barbour from Yarra Glen, Florence Flood from Healesville, Denise Garratt from Gruyere and police officer Matt Henry who was on duty in Steels Creek on Black Saturday. Kinglake author and CFA volunteer Adrian Hyland was guest speaker, giving recognition to volunteers, and to all emergency service workers who he said gave ‘beyond the call of duty’.
Mayor Fiona McAllister, left, thanked Keith Thomas, Jan Simmons, Roger Boness, Florence Flood, Cr Len Cox, Dorothy Barber and Matt Henry. Denise Garratt was unable to attend the breakfast. 121654 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY
WOOHOO! JUNE is a big month for Healesville’s 150th birthday celebrations, with some great events on the calendar. On 28 June, the Healesville 150th Birthday Masquerade Ball is on at The Memo, and next Saturday don’t forget, you can attend a special mask making workshop to ensure you look your ‘masked best’ at the ball. The mask making workshop is from 11.30am - 1.30pm next Saturday 14 June, at the Memo Hall, so bring along your ‘feathers, bits and bling’ and get some great instruction on how you can make a great mask for the ball. To book for the ball, call 1300 368 333, or go to www.culturetracks.info Saturday 21 June, Celebrate the Winter Solstice at Healesville Labyrinth, and make sure you rug up for a chilly Healesville winter morning. The ‘Midwinter Rebirth’ event kicks off at 7am for a ‘Dance before Dawn’, followed at 7.30am by a guided Labyrinth walk with Chai tea, jaffles and a warm fire, to keep the ‘chills’ away. The event will go ahead, rain, hail or shine, with a gold coin donation for entry. The labyrinth is located in Harker Street, next to the children’s playground. For more information, contact: healesvillelab@gmail.com . On 19 June at the RACV Club, there is an open invitation to all community members at 6.30pm, to attend a very special event. Andrew Mackenzie OAM, will be donating a collection of 300 historic photos “Greetings from Healesville” to the Historical Society. Many of the pictures have never been seen in public, the collection includes photos from the ‘Rose Collection’, which were taken in and around Healesville from 1918 - 1960s. And in breaking news, World Champion axeman, Laurence O’Toole, will be competing in the Healesville Heritage Festival Woodchop on the weekend of 8-9 November. More details will follow later. It’s all happening in Healesville this 150th Year. THE STEERING COMMITTEE.
Pages from the past HEALESVILLE GUARDIAN 9 JUNE 1934 Relay Run to Healesville IN brilliant sunshine the mayor of Coburg read the dispatch of goodwill to the president of the Healesville Shire and handed the baton containing the dispatch to S. Wilson who left the Coburg Town Hall at 12.35pm on the first stage of the journey on Saturday. Wilson registered the excellent time of 15 minutes 102/5 seconds for the first three miles. The third stage run by A. Briggs proved very stiff as he had to negotiate the steep Studley Park hill. At 10 miles, the harries were 2 minutes 30 seconds ahead of schedule by 50 seconds. The last runner L. Morton reached the Memorial Hall at 4.40pm. Cr Mowle read the dispatch and formally welcomed the harriers to Healesville with best wishes for a good weekend.
Guest House Fails £4000 Venture at Healesville EXAMINATION was held before the Registrar in Bankruptcy last week of Mrs Clara Bell of Bellmont House Fernshaw Road, Healesville, guest house proprietress Mrs Bell was unable to meet her financial obligations after borrowing £4000 from the bank. Healesville Sanctuary Appreciated Letter From G.W. Green SIR, I travelled on my bike from Panton Hill to Badger Creek to be present at the opening of the Sir Colin McKenzie Sanctuary last week. It was a fine affair and well conducted. As a teacher, I think your native sanctuary will be highly valued. Pupils will visit it and see the best kind of nature study first-hand.
WARBURTON MAIL 12 JUNE 1964 Yarra Junction Loses a Popular Townsman THE sudden death of Mr Frank Colverson at Royal Melbourne Hospital shortly after midday on Tuesday has robbed Yarra Junction of a very popular townsman. Mr Colverson has lived at Yarra Junction for close on 30 years. He was 57 years old. ‘A great townsman’ would be an apt way of describing the late Mr Colverson, as he had always been a great worker for anything concerning the welfare of Yarra Junction. The Upper Yarra Bush Nursing Hospital, Yarra Junction Recreation Reserve Committee and the local football club all have ample reason to feel grateful for his service over the years. He was also one of the ‘heads’ behind the Yarra Junction Horticultural
Society and a keen exhibitor, winning numerous prizes with his dahlias. In 1951 Mr Colverson was employed as a storeman for the Shire of Upper Yarra, a position he held until his death. He leaves a wife, a daughter and three sons to mourn his passing. Tip Hours to be Regulated INDISCRIMINATE dumping of rubbish and the continual lighting of fires at the Upper Yarra Shire Council’s rubbish tip at Wesburn has compelled the council to take action to clean up the tip. Regulation hours will be introduced for the dumping of rubbish and in addition a caretaker will be employed to supervise rubbish disposal. Fire Chief Presents Long Service Awards THE Chief Fire Officer of the C.F.A Mr A. Larkins, attended a social evening organised by the Warburton Fire Brigades Ladies’ Auxiliary at East
Warburton last Saturday night and presented Long Service badges to two Warburton firemen. The firemen to receive the awards were Messrs. George Williams, 25 years’ service and Burt Carter, 12 years’ service to the Rural Brigade. Marriage ANIKA, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Boer of Warburton and Arthyr, only son of Mr and Mrs J. Mills also of Warburton, were married at the Warburton Presbyterian Church last Saturday. A reception was held at St Mary’s Hall. Milkbar to close WARBURTON will be a milkbar short before the end of the month as ‘Tiny’s’ Milk Bar is to close down. Mr W. Gardner plans to enlarge the Hardware Store to include the cafe premises. - Contributed by Ellena Biggs

Late rally sees Woori win YVMDFNL FIRST DIVISION SENIORS
Woori Yallock v Belgrave WOORI Yallock came away with a 50-point victory, but that looked a mile off at half time, as they trailed by 13 points. Woori’s conversion was terrible in the second term as they had plenty of the ball, but wasted it down forward, scoring 1.8 while Wandin booted 3.3 to take the 13-point lead at the long break. The second half was pretty much all Woori Yallock; they had a great third term, going more direct, and the result showed on the scoreboard as they rammed home eight goals-to-one to race to a 31- point lead at the last change. Woori continued to stretch their lead in the last, adding another four goals while Wandin just chased the whole term and could only manage the one behind. Woori Yallock 15.22 (112) d Belgrave 7.10 (52 Wandin v Warburton Millgrove FOR the first quarter this game, it looked as though it was going to be a close contest, as Warby held a fivepoint lead. However, after that, it was all Wandin. In the second term, Wandin booted four goals-to-one to take a 16-point lead into half time, unfortunately for Warby that one goal they kicked in that term was to be their last for the day. The second half was a half that Warby would rather forget as they just couldn’t get the ball forward to penetrate the Wandin’s defence. Every time Wandin got the ball, they looked dangerous and although they didn’t score at a rapid rate, they kept the scoreboard ticking over and by the finals siren, they had won by 67 points in a good second-half performance. Wandin 14.10 (94) d Warburton
was a lot freer flowing, and goals easier to come by, both sides booted four for the quarter and Powelly maintained their four-point advantage at the last change. The last quarter was a bit of a battle for Alex as Powelly’s fitness started to shine through, they ended the day with four goals to Alex’s one to eventually win by 22 points in what was a terrific battle for the majority of the game. Powelltown 12.13 (85) d Alexandra 9.9 (63) Best Powelltown: L. Miller (1), B. McDonald (5), M. McLaughlin. Alexandra: W. Walker (1), J. Goonan, T. Cook.
Emerald’s Nick Jansen kicks a point against Healesville. 121842 Millgrove 3.9 (27) Healesville v Emerald EMERALD held a one-point lead at quarter time in this game, but that was the last time they led as they only added one more major for the remainder of the game. Healesville only booted two goals in the second quarter, but it was enough to grab a two-goal lead at the main break as Emerald only scored one behind. The third term saw Healesville get on top as they found the goals easier
to come by than their opponents, booting four goals to one and by the last change, it was Healesville in control and leading by five goals. Healesville finished the day with a three-goal last quarter while Emerald only scrounged three behinds which leaves Healesville just one game out of the top five while Emerald remain winless on the bottom. Healesville 11.10 (76) d Emerald 3.9 (27) Second Division Seniors:
Pictures: GREG CARRICK Powelltown v Alexandra POWELLTOWN was the favourite to win this game, but they had one hell of a fight on their hands as they couldn’t shake off a determined Alex until late in the last quarter. Alex led at quarter time by just one goal in an even start to the game. The second quarter saw goals hard to come by, but it was Powelly that edged their way in front with two goals-to-one and at the half, they led by just four points. The third term
Thornton Eildon v Yarra Junction THORNTON only had one more scoring shot than Yarra Junction but still won the game by 46 points. Thornton set the tone early with a seven goal-totwo opening term and continued their good form in the second, booting six goals to two and at half time their lead was 50 points. Yarra Junction battled hard to get back into the game in the third, but was wasteful booting 3.6 while Thornton kicked 2.1 and held a 39-point lead at three quarter time. The last quarter was just a battle as Thornton scored two goals to Junction’s one to win well and move into fourth spot while Junction sits vulnerably in fifth place. Thornton Eildon 17.6 (108) d Yarra Junction 8.14 (62) Best Thornton Eildon: Z. King, J. Gorman (2), B. Kapakoulakis (2). Yarra Junction: A. Chandler, W. Robertson (1), M Brown (1). Yea: Bye
Wandin a winner all the way over Warburton YVMDFNL FIRST DIVISION A-GRADE NETBALL
Wandin v Warburton Millgrove WANDIN had this game wrapped up at quarter time as they had 16 goals on the board while holding Warby scoreless. Wandin added another 15 goals in the second while Warby did manage to get on the board with three goals; Wandin’s lead at the half was 28 goals. The second half was more of the same but at least Warby did defend a little better but Wandin still managed to find the ring a lot easier than their opponents, scoring 24 second-half goals-to-11 to win by a more than comfortable 41 goals. Wandin 55 d Warburton Millgrove 14
Best: Wandin: Rebecca McMahon, Nikki Phillips, Tayissa Coppinger. Warburton Millgrove: Karly Wappett, Morgan Brumby, Jaime Lord. Healesville v Emerald EMERALD was competitive in this game, but Healesville always looked the better side throughout - they led by three goals at quarter time but blew that margin out in the second, scoring 16 goals-to-five to lead by 14 at half time. The third quarter was a good battle with Healesville increasing their lead by just one goal-to-15. Healesville finished the day in style with 16 last-quarter goals while Emerald scored six which gave Healesville a very good 25-goal victory.
Healesville 56 d Emerald 31 Best: Healesville: Kathy Carden, Caitlyn Jeffress, Kylie Malone (35). Emerald: Megan Whiteroad (20), Sarah MacDonald, Lauren Moses. Yarra Junction v Thornton Eildon YARRA Junction came away with a 24-goal win over Thornton, but they didn’t have it all their own way; they did lead by 15 goals at the half, but weren’t playing at their best. The third quarter was Junction’s best as they scored 18 goals while holding Thornton to five to grab a hefty 28-goal lead at the last change. Although Thornton was never going to win the game, they played out the last quarter with good spirit and, in fact, outscored Junction
14 goals-to-10 to take a little bit of confidence out of the game while Yarra Junction while not at their best still came away with a comfortable win. Yarra Junction 57 d Thornton Eildon 33 Best: Yarra Junction: Catherine Cook (2), Jessica Allen, Amanda Finn (47). Thornton Eildon: Anita Keddell (11), Melinda Sier, Alesha Davison. Yarra Glen v Seville YARRA Glen remains the only undefeated team in the competition after beating Seville by just one goal in one of the games of the season. This game wasn’t high scoring but defensively it was a great game to witness. Yarra Glen held just a two-goal lead at the
first change and increased that to just three goals by half time. The third quarter saw Seville get through Yarra Glen’s defence on a few occasions that they wouldn’t have been happy with and by the last change, Seville had tied the scores at 21 apiece. The last quarter was a real battle with goals hard to come by, but it was Yarra Glen that somehow managed to sneak their way in front and hold on to win by the smallest possible margin in what could turn out to be a Grand Final preview. Yarra Glen 29 d Seville 28 Best: Yarra Glen: Chelsea Birchall, Stacey Moate, Nicole Braden. Seville: Ashleigh Hardy, Stacey Bell, Clare Papavs.

RENEW YOUR SHOWER
Snow fever hits the mountain By JESSE GRAHAM WINTER has officially hit, and passionate snow-goers are being sought to keep Lake Mountain’s snowy slopes safe by volunteering with the Lake Mountain Ski Patrol (LMSP). The LMSP is looking for volunteers to help take part in its weekend patrols near Marysville, working to keep visitors safe while they ski, walk snowshoe trails and toboggan along the slopes. LMSP member of four years, Healesville’s Tim Hatten, said it was a rewarding experience for those passionate about the snow and helping others.
“It is rewarding to be able to provide first-aid assistance to visitors at Lake Mountain over the winter months,” he said. The criteria for volunteers are that they must be fit and competent skiers, or willing to learn. Volunteers must also be aged 18 or older and have a minimum Level 2 First Aid qualification. A training weekend for current and prospective LMSP members will be held at Lake Mountain on 14 and 15 June. For more information, contact Catherine Sutton on 0403 146 378, or email ccrsutton@ gmail.com.
