Fine old time By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE long weekend brought with it some bad behaviour in Albury, while Wodonga remained ‘quiet.’ Albury Police are calling for public assistance following an assault which left a 37-year-old man with a chipped tooth and bruising to his face after an altercation outside Brady’s Hotel at approximately 1am Saturday morning. The man was conveyed to hospital by ambulance and treated. Police are not currently releasing details of the offenders. “Over the long weekend a number of people were spoken to concerning their behaviour in and around hotels in the Albury CBD,” Albury LAC inspector Anthony Moodie said. “These people will be receiving

fines through the post this week and may be surprised at the amount and no doubt the imposition this will have on their finances. “This will also serve as a warning to others who display a distinct lack of respect to others in the community by their behaviour.” Wodonga Police Acting Sergeant Larry Goldsworthy attributed their pleasingly uneventful weekend to Albury being a more club/pub oriented place than Wodonga. In addition to the assault, five other incidents were recorded in Albury over the weekend. “About 11pm Saturday night a 22-year-old man was observed urinating against a business wall in Kiewa Street, Albury,” Insp Moodie said.

“He will be receiving a $500 criminal infringement notice in the post this week for offensive behaviour. “About 2.10am Sunday morning a 22-year-old man was spoken to by police in Dean Street, after being excluded from a licensed premises. The person argued for some time with police before leaving and returning to the area. “He will be receiving a number of infringements in the post for excluded person failing to quit ($550) and continuing his intoxicating behaviour after a move on direction was given ($1100). “About 2.25am Sunday morning a 37-year-old man used offensive language in Dean Street in the presence of police as they dealt with another matter. He will be receiving a criminal in-

fringement notice for $500 in the post this week. “About 4.20pm Sunday afternoon a 22-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman were spoken to by police after leaving licensed premises in Guinea Street concerning their behaviour. “As a result of the interaction with police and disturbance to others, both will be receiving infringement notices for $500 for their offensive language and the man will receive an additional infringement for continuing intoxicating behaviour after a move on direction was given ($1100). “About 11.20pm Sunday night, a 31-year-old man was spoken to by police after he returned to a Kiewa Street Hotel following his exclusion by hotel security.

“He will be receiving an infringement for $550 in the post this week for excluded person re-enter the vicinity of licensed premise.” Insp Moodie said this type of antisocial behaviour in Albury’s CBD had the potential to give visitors and others in our community a distorted view of overall crime in Albury. “This can impact in all areas of our community,” he said. “Police will continue to take action against people who disregard the law and make others feel unsafe.” Anyone who saw the assault in Albury or has any knowledge of who was involved or what had transpired are urged to contact Albury Police on 02 6023 9299 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Telstra technicians have taken photos of the disgraceful state of the region’s phone lines.

Phone lines taped AN AUDIT of the state of the Telstra copper telephone network in Riverina and country southern NSW shows it is falling apart and only held together by plastic bags and duct tape, the CEPU Telecommunications Union said last week. CEPU NSW Branch Assistant Secretary Shane Murphy has been meeting with workers in the local area. He said that many people in the region couldn’t use their phone and internet services due to small disruptions like rain. “Everywhere I’ve been in country NSW, I’ve

heard shocking stories from technicians about the state of the network,” Mr Murphy said. “Technicians have supplied photos to show our phone lines being held together by plastic bags and duct tape.” Telstra area general manager central Victoria and Sunraysia Steve Tinker released a statement yesterday morning regarding the CEPU’s findings. “We spend hundreds of millions of dollars each year operating and maintaining our copper network and our technicians complete millions of service jobs a year,” it read. “From time to time will put a temporary fix in place to ensure customers have access to a working service, which is always our first priority, until more permanent repairs can be completed. “The use of temporary cables is restricted to cases where there is simply no other way to give the customer a service - it is not the preferred approach nor the standard. “In fact, temporary cables account for a very, very small percentage of services.” Mr Murphy said complaint calls for faults were generally 40-50 per day, though on a rainy

day calls could be up between 200-300. Not good news with winter arriving. “The smallest drop of rain leads to people losing telephone and internet access. We are seeing a fourfold increase in faults reported in wet weather,” he said. “People in country NSW are not getting the telephone and internet services they deserve. “The copper network has passed its use-by date and technicians aren’t given the time they need to make proper repairs - instead they are pressured to make short-term fixes and move on to the next job.” Mr Murphy said Telstra were “hammering” their technicians to meet performance targets - threatening them with losing their jobs. They were not given adequate time to complete a job properly. Mr Murphy said two weeks ago a trainee was fired two days before finishing his probation period for not completing enough jobs per day. “This is the copper network the Federal Government believes can connect the ‘fibre to the node’ NBN to people’s homes,” Mr Murphy said. “Country NSW deserves better.”

Kiewa Street prays for sun By KRYSTEN MANUEL

There will be some disruption to traffic flow along Kiewa Street but I think residents will understand that we’re trying to achieve an important and much needed upgrade. “The new pedestrian signals will be especially important, and finally resolve one of the most dangerous crossings in central Albury.” AlburyCity staff began visiting businesses in the precinct on 7 May and presented to the Chamber of Commerce on 20 May outlining the program of works. A separate information session for businesses was held on 28 May. Council will also keep interested businesses and residents informed of the works as they progress. “At the moment it’s four lanes of traffic so it’s a very busy precinct,” Cr Thurley said.

“This is, in fact, the busiest crossing in Albury. “Once we go down to one lane of traffic each way it slows everything down. Some motorists might think it’s bad news but this is not supposed to be a drive-through area. “This is where people shop and walk - like Dean Street. Dean Street is a lovely place to walk now and we have plenty of parking outside the CBD.” AlburyCity has received $45,000 in funding from Roads and Maritime Services to install the pedestrian-operated traffic signals. Council has matched the funds with a further $45,000 to complete the project. “The Kiewa Street upgrade is a necessary investment in the future of the city, and will be a vital economic stimulus for years to come,” Cr Mack said. 1139348-EG24-14

ALBURYCITY and Centro Albury are crossing their fingers for good weather to finish the $1.8 million Kiewa Street upgrade before Christmas. The project, which started yesterday, has been planned to finish in November. “As a council, we’re going to try very hard to get it out of the way before Christmas before the busy peak period starts,” Cr David Thurley said. “It depends on the weather. Like all of our projects that involve roadworks you could end up with a delay because of the rain and the cold. “But the plan is we can do it in the time available, if we get delays we’ll halt the works and come back in the new year so we don’t cause disruptions over Christmas.” The first stage of development will be installing pedestrian signals at the notorious Kiewa Street pedestrian crossing. Stage two will include the complete reconstruction of Kiewa Street between Dean and Smollett Streets, including the installation of angled parking, landscaping, kerb and channel and drainage. Vehicle access will be maintained during stage one but Kiewa Street between Dean and Smollett Streets will not be a thoroughfare. Stage two will mean the complete closure of Kiewa Street to traffic between Dean and Smollett Streets for up to 20 weeks. AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack said Centro Albury would enjoy business as usual during the redevelopment, with a view to better business once it was complete. “All the shops will be open and operating as usual throughout the works,” he said. “We’ve been working closely with the traders in the area to make sure they’re fully informed of the works and minimise the disruption to their businesses as much as possible.

Bikers help with care By KRYSTEN MANUEL ST MATTHEWS Church has welcomed $2000 in funding from Border Bikefest to assist their Crisis Care program. The program assists the homeless who come to St Matthews seeking food, shelter and direction after ‘slipping through the cracks of the system.’ “We have donated $2000 to St Matthews Crisis Care to provide finds for them to distribute to the needy in the community,” Border Bikefest organiser Michael Georgiou said. “It’s a group that doesn’t get a lot of promotion. “Our auspice is to donate all proceeds to community groups in the local area and that’s what we’ve done.” Some $12,000 from Border Bikefest 2013 has been donated to six community groups in the local area, with visions for 2014 to be bigger and better than ever before. “The 2014 Border Bikefest will be Sunday October 12 at Gateway Lakes - it’s our seventh show, so we’re pretty excited about it,” Mr Georgiou said. “It will be bigger and better than last year.” Archdeacon Peter MacLeod-Miller couldn’t be more pleased with the donation, saying the money is going to a worthy cause and the timing couldn’t be better. “I’m delighted and impressed because since 2008 when they (Border Bikefest) started they’ve given so much back to the community, but in a fairly quiet way,” he said. “You don’t normally associate motorbikes with a quiet group but the great things they’ve been doing

Even this week, you’d be be shocked at the complicated realities some people have and the really dodgy family and social clubs people were born into. “By the time people come here they’ve had a whole lot of doors slammed in their face. “It’s by working together we come up with a range of solutions. Sometimes you don’t just get unexpected knocks at the door wanting help, sometimes you get unexpected knocks on the door offering help itself.” Archdeacon MacLeodMiller said many people who came to the church for help had struggled to make sense of the government’s system on many levels, coming to the church as their last hope. “You can’t solve everyone’s problems through government policies, there will always be people who get left in the wash, and some people are very difficult to help but they do need some sort of help,” he said. “You can’t be too busy for someone in need. To

ask help from a stranger you do need to be desperate - in terms of what it means for yourself and human dignity. “Just this week we’ve had people who knock on the door, they’re homeless, they have an obvious psychiatric condition, they have no job, they can’t actually work out how to access appropriate assistance so they end up outside in the cold and the dark with no food and nowhere to be safe. “In that situation, what do you do? All the offices are closed, the railway station will shut because they don’t want to be an accommodation service, so where do those people go? “If you do have an intellectual disability or psychiatric condition, which is half the time why they’re on the street, where do they go? They’ll ask around, they’ll knock on doors in Albury, people will be frightened - naturally, and so when they knock on the door here we will do whatever we can. “One of the good things about the need of some people is it’s caused the rest of us to get together and that’s fantastic. I’m very grateful to these guys - the guys on the bikes and the guys on the airwaves with 2AY.”

The ride is one of the world’s largest one-week cycling holidays. The 2014 route will feature the hills and valleys of the spectacular North East of Victoria and will see around 4,000 bike riders, including 1,200 school students taking part. Art of landscape LOCAL artist and TAFE teacher Mary-Jane Griggs opened her 16th exhibition, Elsewhere, last Friday evening at Arts Space Wodonga. “This is my 16th exhibition, it’s the ninth I’ve had on the Border and the third in this beautiful space,” she told NewsWeekly. “It’s really my response to having spent nearly eight weeks in the northern winter. A little bit in Paris, which is represented by the frou-frous and the rest is England. It was fantastic. “As soon as I got home I started painting. I’ve done a lot of local painting here, but

it’s our local landscape - Nail Can Hill, the valleys, and I saw things over there like trees that were planted in the 16th century, just phenomenal things, completely different. “Also, I was bowled over by the contrast between France and England and their attitudes to nature. “It’s my response visually on the memory, though some of them are obviously made-up. Griggs said her works were painted from an assortment of memories, photographs and personal fantasy. “They’re all acrylic,” she said. “When I’m in the studio I work really quickly. If I worked

THE RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride Community Workshop was held on Monday at the LibraryMuseum in a bid to ready the town for the expected $280,000 economic injection. Some 4000 riders plus their friends and families will be pedalling into town at the end of November, with AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack welcoming their arrival. “There are going to be great fund-raising opportunities for local community groups and sporting clubs,” he said. “Previous events show that each rider spends $70 per head at the starting location, not including their friends and families.” “The Bicycle Network will be working with council to host a welcoming event which is going to be a great opportunity for businesses and groups to set up stalls and sell directly to riders, supporters and event crew.” Bicycle Network’s general manager of events Darren Allen said the meetings allowed interested community members, local businesses and tourism operators to find out more about the ride and what opportunities there were for them to get involved. “It also allows bike riders interested in taking part in the event to find out more,” he said. “These meetings answer questions about the RACV Great Vic so everyone can look forward to the ride coming to town. “Even though the ride is still over five months

Progress on court fees THE Lauren Jackson Sports Centre court hire fees issue is closer to being resolved after a meeting between AlburyCity, Albury Basketball Association and local clubs last week. All parties have agreed to work together to develop a strategy for the future structure of the full season court hire system. At the April meeting of council it was decided that court hire fees would be implemented for junior

basketball from July. A report will be presented to the 16 June Community and Cultural Committee Meeting outlining possible next steps for implementation. The committee’s recommendation will be presented to the full council meeting on 23 June. AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack said he was delighted to see the delegates at the meeting fully participate in the discussion. “The councillors appreciated the

opportunity to hear directly from the representatives of the association about the challenges and opportunities that were involved in implementing a new court hire fee,” he said. “While the association will have further meetings to investigate implementation methods, we’re looking forward to a report later this month that will outline the way forward that will be of most benefit to all parties.”

Albury Basketball Association Board Chairman, Paul Gooding agreed. “It had been an opportunity to hear all the views about how the court hire fee could be implemented,” he said. “As an association we will continue to work with our member clubs to come up with solutions for implementation which will provide the most benefit for the players, parents, clubs and association.”

The installation will be up until 12 July, after which yellow ‘blankets’ will be donated to local animal shelters, providing warmth to four-legged companions throughout the winter.

Crush forms for grape event By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE annual Rutherglen Winery Walkabout was another success, drawing a crowd every bit as large, enthusiastic and colourful as last year. One of the main events of the weekend is the barrel rolling and grape stomping, thanks to its celebrity appearances and friendly competitive spirit. “We’ve had 33 years of barrel rolling and grape stomping,” Apex member Matt Wicks said. “It’s one way us young fellas can put back into the community. It’s a bit of a laugh and a point of difference for the main street on the weekend. “During the year we go out, pick the grapes, store them in a cool room, on the day we set the treaders up in the middle of the street and hay bales around them. “We have public stomping which people book for and for participating we give them a bottle of wine and a certificate from the local wine-makers. The first two heats are random people from around Australia. “At 2pm is the celebrity grape stomping competition, so that’s always been our local members of parliament - we’ve had state and federal members, local shire members and mayors from all over Victoria. “This year we had Cathy McGowan, Tim McCurdy and Don Chambers. “It’s fancy dress, just for a bit of a laugh. They’ve come on fire trucks before, they’ve been delivered on motorbikes, they try and make it a good spectacle. “There’s a guy and a girl in each treader. So Cathy was with Apex’s Mark Chandler, Mark’s wife Renee stepped up and competed with Tim McCurdy and they won, and Don Chambers was with Karen Gaffney.”

Mr Wicks said the competition was not as easy as some might think ... “We put two barrels of grapes into the treader, they then stomp for three minutes,” he said. “The aim of the game is to keep the grapes away from the hole but make it channel and you have to use your toe to clean out the plug-hole or all it does is block it. Some people stamp too much and the grapes all end up in that corner and there’s no flow. Three minutes is a hell of a long time - it’s exhausting! “There’s grapes flying everywhere, my bookwork gets covered in them! “The juice flows into a bucket and at three minutes we count down, the crowd gets right behind that, the stomping stops, the buckets are taken away and then it’s poured into a measuring jug and the winner is called.” Mr Wicks said the weekend went off without a hitch thanks to passionate community groups, flamboyant crowds and a generally relaxed, funloving atmosphere. “It’s the relaxed attitude from everyone that makes the Winery Walkabout,” he said. “It’s a mixture of the police service letting people be a bit silly, and it’s the parties that come in all dressed up - we had minions come through, we had Vikings, Roman soldiers, the list goes on, and they just add that spark of fun. “The wineries are so tolerant - normally they’re very sophisticated but on this weekend they set up bands and DJs, they allow the interaction of the community groups to go out and have barbecues and raise money. “It’s not looked upon by the wineries as a money-making weekend, it’s more that they’re supporting the community groups to raise money from outsiders.”

Rubbish cash A STATE Government grant of $213,000 to help residents dispose of problem waste has been received by AlburyCity. The funds will be used to construct a household dropoff facility at the Albury Waste Management Centre and create a designated zone to dispose of problem waste, including oils, paints, fluorescent light globes and batteries. It’s envisaged that the facility will become a regional hub servicing neighbouring councils which do not offer a service to recycle problem waste. The funding will also be used to develop educational resources that will inform residents about the impacts of plac-

ing dangerous wastes in their household bins. AlburyCity Mayor Kevin Mack said the funding would help prevent problem materials from finding their way into the residential waste stream. “Household items such as paints, oils and batteries are difficult to dispose of and we can’t just throw them in the bin,” he said. “There is still a significant amount of paint, oil and batteries entering landfill and contaminating the kerbside residential bin, which this funding will help us prevent. “With this funding we’ll be able to establish a location in the Waste Management Centre

dedicated solely to disposing of problems materials. “This will be part of the first stage of an upgrade to the Albury Waste Management Centre which will feature a community recycling centre. The new centre will allow for systematic recycling of household hazardous wastes along with recyclable items for the region’s growing population. “We’re grateful to the State Government for this much-needed funding which will help local residents and the environment.” Every year AlburyCity receives 26.6 tonnes of paint, 18 tonnes of oil, 15 tonnes household batteries and 11 tonnes of gas bottles.

Grant’s moving experience THE Beechworth Library is on the move thanks to a grant from the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program 2014. Member for Benambra Bill Tilley has announced funding of $257,000 to assist with the relocation of the Beechworth Library to the existing Indigo Shire Council offices in Ford Street. The library will take up residence after council makes its own move to the Mayday Hills site sometime next year. Indigo mayor Cr Bernard Gaffney welcomed the grant and said council would contribute $86,000 to the project. “This is great news today,” he said. “It means the Beechworth library will become a drawcard, a real community hub in the centre of the town and we will maintain a council transaction centre at the site.” Acting Team Leader Library Services Wendy Kerr said the

move would vastly improve access to the library and its services. “The new site is much more central for the community and access for people with mobility issues will be greatly improved,” he said. “Funds will be used for the fit-out of the building including automatic doors, more accessible shelving, office space for staff, a work room and customer service point. “The new site will allow us to develop the library as a community hub. We’ll have the space to accommodate 25 children and their parents for storytime. “The funds will also allow us to develop the library space to suit a multitude of uses from quiet study and reading areas to busier and slightly noisier activities.” It is planned that Beechworth’s Maternal and Child Health Centre will also make

the move to the new site. Community development officer early years Sandra Forrest said the move would improve service delivery with up-to-date facilities in a readily accessible location. “The Maternal and Child Health Service offers advice and education to families from Beechworth, Stanley, Wooragee and surrounding areas,” Ms Forrest said. “Everything from well-being and development advice to parent and family health information is available through the service. “Clients will enjoy increased waiting space and exposure to early literacy experiences as well,” Ms Forrest said. Work on the project is expected to begin next year, after council staff have relocated to The Pines at Mayday Hills. When complete, the library/ council transaction centre will be open for five and a half days a week.

Plots are back HENTY Machinery Field Day’s agronomy plots will be back on the “must-see’’ list for regional grain growers this year. The popular cereal, oilseed and pulse trials were absent last year with the 3.2ha site sown to the short season wheat variety dart. By this year’s event on September 23-25 the site will be a sea of yellow under the triazine tolerant canola variety, ATR Gem, courtesy of Riverina Local Land Services and contractors Kaylx Pty Ltd. As one of the state’s most visited DPI trial sites, it has enabled past field day visitors to explore new varieties, inspect fertiliser, inoculant, fungicide or foliar application comparisons. This year, half the site has been sown to canola and the balance left as a chemical fallow. Murray and Riverina Local Land Services will manage the single season replicated trials of phosphorus, nitrogen and sulphur. Riverina Local Land Services senior land services officer (cropping) Lisa Castleman said soil tests in recent years on regional cropping paddocks had revealed variability within phosphorus levels. “Prior to the drought, fertiliser rates were trending up to 120kg/ha of products such as MAP and DAP in dryland cropping paddocks,’’ Ms Castleman said. “After some dry seasons and crops not able to yield to their targets, there were residual values of phosphorus and some-

Around 70 per cent of lamb mortality occurs between birth and weaning, mostly in the first 48 hours. “Getting ewes in lamb is one achievement, but successfully getting the lambs on the ground and through the first 48 hours is another,” DEPI district veterinary officer Dr Jeff Cave said. “The two factors which heavily influence lamb survival and growth are ewe nutrition in the last six weeks of pregnancy; and the impact of climatic conditions.” The day will cover a range of top-

TOM Cruise - putting the action in acting since double stone-washed denim was ‘rad.’ He might be a bit of a weirdo in real life, but in his natural habitat of action films he truly is a star that shines bright, and his performance in Edge of Tomorrow is no exception. Of course, the storyline special effects and a quality co-star in Emily Blunt all contributed to the greatness of the film, but there’s no doubt Cruise delivered another typically solid performance to his adoring fans - and even those who aren’t so Maverick inclined. So now I’ve told you Tom Cruise features in this particular action film, you’ve probably guessed his mission is to save the world/ girl/ humanity

from total devastation against highly adverse odds ... and you’re correct! Cruise plays Major William Cage, a marketing whiz whose job is to convince millions of people to enlist in the world army and fight against a hostile alien race, the Mimics. The Mimics are basically really strong, nasty octopuses on methamphetamine who pretty well all share a brain (which is hidden in a secret location). When thrown into the battlefield with no combat training or experience, it’s probably safe to say Cage’s undies were not clean, and nor should they be - he dies within the first five minutes. But here’s the interesting/ super confusing part - because he managed to kill a special kind of Mimic he now must come back and re-live the day over and over again until he finds the alien’s brain and destroys it. As you can imagine, this is pretty frustrating for him, but luckily he has the help of highly decorated soldier Rita Vrataski (Blunt), who has also

been in the same situation. Together, they must work against all odds to escape the battlefield, find Mother-Mimic and destroy her. Time travel is always an interesting concept for all audiences as it raises the question ‘what would you do if you had a second chance?’ But it also explores the edges of human potential and character. In Edge of Tomorrow, Cage struggles with essentially having a one-sided relationship with Vrataski and having to see her die over and over again while she technically hadn’t even met Cage before that day. He also struggles with trying to convince people to help him on his mission, challenging them to take massive risks and believe in something they can barely comprehend - a true test of faith. This film is definitely worth seeing. Men, women, young, old, friends, couples or groups - it’s an all-round pleaser.



Off to the white start By KRYSTEN MANUEL WITH the opening weekend of the ski season falling substantially earlier this year, both Falls Creek and Mt Hotham were firing up the snowguns to substitute for nature’s snow-deficit. But it didn’t stop snow enthusiasts from making the most of restaurants, pubs, accommodation and what snow was available. “We got off onto a surprisingly white footing,” Falls Creek resort brand manager Andrew O’Shea said. “We had cold temperatures overnight so we had the snow-making guns on. We really only had a dusting of natural snow but we made snow across 50 hectares of our terrain. “With snow in the forecast for later this week we really had to lay something down. “On Sunday we had some snow showers - our first blast of wintry weather. We’re steadily building a base for the season.” At Mt Hotham, resort brand manager Connie Lurger said snow-making began at 1am Saturday night. “We fired up our snow-guns and started snowmaking on the Big D, Sun Run and Summit Trainer,” she said. “Between Saturday and Sunday we made over 128 truck loads of snow. “Mother Nature lent us a bit of a helping hand as well and started to deliver a few snowflakes Sunday morning through to Monday. “There was a lot of snow play and even some keen beans hiking up the Big D and having a board. “Opening weekend this year was very early in comparison to other years. It’s not uncommon to have minimal snowfall during opening weekend. “Weather is fickle and can change overnight. We’re very confident 2014 will be another bumper season for us.” While Mt Hotham had no lifts open, Falls Creek opened the Falls Express for snow play and

With a smorgasbord of events across the two mountains, Ms Lurger and Mr O’Shea said opening weekend was still a great success. “Opening weekend was actually really good,” Ms Lurger said. “It’s all about catching up with friends, people coming up, celebrating the start of the winter with good food, wine and music. “Hotham and Dinner Plain have come to life over the weekend. We had all the restaurants open, we had fireworks, we even had an art gallery we’ve put up at Hotham Central. “This weekend we had the new Burton Riglet Park at Hotham and Falls Creek. “We had Harry The Snow Dragon back on stage with his first show of the season. “Dinner Plain was hosting their fourth annual Snow Excuse weekend which was a showcase of food, wine and family fun across different venues. “Yesterday finished the season opening with a massive firework display at Dinner Plain at 6pm last night.” Falls Creek welcomed the Melbourne Comedy Festival for three shows, with all eateries up and running. “Opening weekend is always a big party weekend - a re-gathering of the clan,” Mr O’Shea said. “We have more than 30 restaurants, bars and cafes and they were all open.” Those looking to head up to either mountain this weekend should cross their fingers, with snow expected to come on Thursday evening and stay throughout the weekend. “It’s still very early in the season but all the indications are good,” Mr O’Shea said. “Friday in particular is looking very snowy. We could get as much as 30cm of good solid snow. That would really set us up for the rest of June and get us off on a pretty good footing. “We’ll continue to fire all the snow-guns over the next few days.”

THE Porsche Club of Victoria (PCV) visited Winton Motor Raceway last weekend to conduct another heat in the lead-up to their championships at the end of the year. PCV run a competition season over the calendar year, with typically 10 or 11 events held at race tracks in Victoria, with motorkhanas held a couple of times a year. Porsche Club of Victoria competition director Tony Carolan said PCV aimed to hold their event at Winton over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend every year. “This weekend’s event was part of our competition sprint series,” he said. “We typically get about 60 cars enter for that event. They’re all in different classes, from almost regular street cars to cars that are quite heavily modified and effectively full race cars. “They’re all classified into groups and they compete in groups. It’s time and laps, it’s not what you might call ‘door to door racing.’ It’s going out with a group of 12 or 15 cars and seeing who can set the fastest lap. “It is effectively a heat of our whole competition series.

The championships at the end of the year are awarded with an accumulation of points.” Mr Carolan said competitors especially liked the track at Winton. “People love the run at Winton because it’s a very technical and challenging circuit,” he said. “It’s a real test of their skills. “There’s actually two tracks at Winton. There’s what you call the long track and there’s also a club circuit which is shorter, where you peel off early. We run on both of those circuits because they have different characteristics and it gives more challenge to our competitors rather than just running on the one circuit.” Of course, Mr Carolan is a Porsche enthusiast himself, pointing out the beauty of the machines and the passion behind clubs like the PCV. “Porsche as a company has always been very involved and supportive of motorsport,” he said. “They built cars that perform terrifically. Some cars are bought for their prestige value but most people buy Porsches because they love the way they perform. “But you can’t take their performance ability on the road

so this gives you an opportunity to see that on the track and compare yourself with other people with similar vehicles. “Some people only go to experience their vehicle and see what it can do. Others, it’s the thrill of the competition.” The PCV recently brought a new points system into effect, which has made for some outstanding results from several competitors. “We have put into effect a new points system this year which is making the competition a lot closer, which we like, but there are some people that are really outstanding,” Mr Carolan said. “There’s about eight different classes. The ones where people are doing particularly well are in what’s called M1 Class. “Mr Bob Hawker is in that class and doing extremely well. He has just been a really good consistent competitor over the years. He drives a 996 GT3. “Hot on his tail is Stan Bougadakis. Stan drives a black 997 Carrera S. “In Class D, the lowest class, there is a young lad called John Swan and he’s in a 944 S2. “And hot on his tail is a young lady, Melanie Treloar, and she’s in a black Boxster.”

Says with SIMON CORR SOME weeks ago I wrote about the allure of the key forward and how I was pretty stoked that while the AFL has become devoid of power forwards kicking regular big hauls of goals, it continues to happen in our great league on the Border. I mentioned at the time Brendan Fevola, Adam Prior, Dean Limbach and Corowa Rutherglen’s Luke Gestier, but I failed to mention the man that has taken it all by storm lately, Setanta Ó hAilpín. The former Carlton and GWS player took a little time to adjust to our game but has yielded 32 goals in the last three weeks. That is nearly an average of 11 goals per game. Ó hAilpín is exciting and at times very unpredictable (even to himself) which makes for very entertaining viewing. Big Setanta has certainly imposed himself on the competition and his rich vein of form coincides with Albury’s supreme dominance, they clearly are the team to beat for this season’s premiership. Setanta benefits from a very dominant and highly skilled mid-field that gets knocks up, winning the ball and giving their team every chance to score big totals. In fact Albury has scored a total of 170+ points in its last three games, and aside from the abandoned round one game against Yarrawonga, they have only been held to a total of less than 120 points once. We are not quite halfway through the season, and I am aware it’s more important to be peaking on the eve of the finals than at this stage of the year, but who said the Tigers have peaked yet? Scary! Lavington last week finally got a big scalp of the competition when an undermanned Panthers outfit defeated Yarrawonga by 45 points. Spearhead Justin Koschitzke was the catalyst with six goals and his second consecutive best on ground performance. The Panthers’ courageous win has many now declaring the competition to be a threehorse race, but what has happened to Yarrawonga?

The Pigeons have been anything but ruthless of late and after only managing to kick six goals for the entire game against the Panthers, questions are being asked. The personnel haven’t changed, and while the competition has improved by another 10 per cent, I can’t quite comprehend the lacklustre form. Yarrawonga has some class acts at the club, and while they don’t appear to be playing at their best, I believe a bit of soul-searching will see a quick turnaround in form. This weekend is huge for the fourth-placed Corowa Rutherglen. A

great victory last week against fellow top five aspirant in Nth Albury has all but guaranteed the Roos a berth in this year’s finals. They meet Lavington, who will be brimming with confidence in what will be the Roos’ biggest challenge thus far. Corowa were well beaten by both Albury and Yarrawonga earlier in the year, but the Roos have had time to gel better as a team since and now also have the incentive of a potential top three finish. Bryce Campbell has got the club believing in themselves and they apply very intense pressure on their opponents, which gives them plenty of chances.
