City ‘lagging on Esther’s back on the beat and eyeing the big screen indoor centres’
SHE’S dated Cats skipper Joel Selwood and captivated soapie audiences across Australia. But now Esther Anderson’s destined for the big screen in her first feature-length movie. After finding fame as a policewoman on TV’s Home and Away, the Geelong beauty is back on the beat as a feisty detective in Broken Contract. “It’s a strong, confident, smart character with a cheeky side to her,” Esther tells the latest edition of Geelong Coast magazine (GC). “It’s a bit of fun for me.” Esther, who turns 35 this Friday, spills the beans on her professional and personal life to John Van Klaveren in a four-page GC spread. Living in Los Angeles, working in Western Australia, getting back to Geelong when she can - that’s life for one of the city’s most glamorous products. “It’s important for me to come home regularly, so I’m happy to be working again in Australia.” Full of local people, places, issues and ideas, GC is the region’s best glossy lifestyle magazine. GC is out now at all good local newsagents.

GEELONG needs up to $81 million in new sport facilities to cope with population growth, a council investigation has found. Between $28 million and $30 million of the total is high-priority, according to the investigation. The results come two months after council was forced to abandon its controversial annual ward funding scheme and redirect its $7.2 million into city-centre projects. The system’s supporters said it provided Geelong with the best sport and community facilities in regional Australia. But now the Geelong indoor recreation facilities strategy has identified a shortage of indoor courts, with the gap to increase as the population grows. The study said City of Greater Geelong, had 46 full or large-size courts but only 34 were available to the community. Geelong had the fewest useable courts per capita compared to other regional councils including Frankston, Bendigo and Ballarat. The strategy said the region faced “a number of major challenges” in providing indoor facilities. Solutions included increasing use at existing centres, opening access to facilities currently disallowing community use and planning to build eight to 10 courts by 2018 and a further 10 by 2031. The strategy recommended a new eight to 10-court regional centre at Brearley Reserve, Marshall, to meet facility gaps and population growth in Geelong’s south. Another four courts were needed at Corio’s Leisuretime Centre, along with new amenities to meet population growth in the northern suburbs. Continued page 4

Double Take
RELAX. I CAN COME TO YOU.
CITY Hall firebrand councillor Jan Farrell is back in the social media fray after Geelong businessman Chris Tsorotes accused her of racism for retweeting a post unkindly linking his Greek heritage and property interests. Tsorotes told Double Take he was considering defamation action while awaiting the outcome of a City Hall probe into his complaint. Since then, though, Jan’s been channelling a Twitter user named Jonathon Brown who identifies himself as a media educator. She re-tweeted one of his posts, stating: “Defamation: Protecting the powerful and keeping their critics quiet. Just the way the powerful like it. #MediaWatch”.

Apparently it doesn’t work on Jan, though. SMACK in The Chops Department: Ford’s set to dump 120 workers next week and Alcoa 800 a few weeks later but over in the US they’re working together on a new all-aluminium F-500, the biggest-selling vehicle in the states. Now Alcoa’s expanding operations stateside, helping produce another new super car. Together with battery-maker Phinergy, Alcoa has just revealed a modified Citroen C1 car with special batteries that allow it to travel around 1600km on a single charge. Too bad its pulling the plug here. NO DOUBT Apollo Bay’s volunteer ambulance officers play an important role in the local
community, along with CFA and surf life saving club members. It’s just that any patient might do their own double take at the name of one of the town’s respected long-serving ambos Wayne Malady. At least he shares their pain. WHO knew our region was a bit of a hunter’s paradise? Apparently the area generates $17.2 million from game hunting, according to an economic impact report on the pastime. The region rates fairly highly in the state, with shooters on the hunt for deer and quail as well as ducks and pest animals. And that’s not including the Cats’ Taylor Hunt, often found hunting the opposition’s best player.

GEELONG’S mayor has been wrongly linked to unapproved “exploding” fire extinguishers, according to his Big Group of Companies. Big chief Mario Gregorio said a Fairfax report this week about Darryn Lyons and the “fire balls” was “all untrue” “Darryn and I don’t know anything about the fire balls - it’s not even on our radar. “At this stage we’ve agreed to set up a company, it’s still nothing at the moment. We’ve gone into partnership with some guys in Dubai (and) one of the things they distribute is these fireballs. “We’re not planning to sell
them in Australia.” Cr Lyons was away on holidays with newly-arrived fiance Elissa Friday and unavailable to comment. The “exploding” fire extinguishers reportedly detonate when placed in contact with flames. Promotional material for the Lifetech product describes it as a revolutionary ball-shaped extinguisher. “When touched by a naked flame it will activate within three seconds and effectively disperse extinguishing chemicals,” the company’s website says. “The ball can be mounted in high-risk areas prone to fire. When a fire occurs and no one is
present the fire extinguisher ball will self-activate when it comes into contact with fire and produce a loud noise to warn people nearby.” Fairfax reported that authorities had reservations about the anti-fire ball. However, Lifetech said no special training or skill was required to operate the ball, which required no inspections or maintenance over its five-year lifespan. The Fairfax reporter who wrote the story said Lifetech made only the extinguisher ball, he tried to contact Cr Lyons multiple times and ASIC records showed Lifetech’s mother company was based in Hong Kong, not Dubai.

Gaol for sale, just like Kennett firm advised
By NOEL MURPHY
GEELONG’S council has put Old Geelong Gaol on the market, in line with a controversial report last year by former premier Jeff Kennett’s consultancy, CT Management. Council voted on Tuesday to seek expressions of interest from suitable applicants as well as community submissions on the gaol’s future. The CT Management report recommended selling $11 million of City Hall assets including the gaol, Queen’s Park, Osborne House, Elcho Park and Balyang par-three golf course. Former deputy mayor Anthony Aitken criticised council for contract-
ing CT Management without a quotation process or competitive tendering. The Old Geelong Gaol, which council bought in 1994 with a $360,000 interest-free government loan, could sell for several million dollars. Geelong Rotary sub-leases the gaol to numerous tenants including a disability support service and a ghost tour company. A report to council said the gaol’s maintenance costs averaged $30,700 a year while rent income averaged $35,700. Completing a full maintenance backlog and anticipated compliance expenses would conservatively cost
$1.56 million, the report said. Rotary wrote to the Independent highlighting its cut-rate gaol leases for not-for-profit bodies including St Laurence Community Services, Diversitat and Barwon Health. Rotary also used the gaol to provide training for Gordon Institute of TAFE hospitality students, cheap parking for health workers, primary and secondary student programs and temporary accommodation for asylum-seekers. The gaol attracted 10,000 visitors a year and generated $1.5 million during Rotary’s tenure, which was returned to community projects. Australian Services Union (ASU) has raised concerns about the commu-
nity assets sell-off, including the gaol. The ASU warned of “detrimental effects” on some council workers and “the community as a whole”. “Selling off council assets, including the possible sale of golf courses and historic council buildings, could lead to job losses,” ASU assistant secretary Richard Duffy told the Independent. “The main concern is that if assets are sold or jobs are contracted out, new enterprises could end up hiring people who do not contribute or live in the Geelong region at a lower wage rate, impacting the quality of services delivered while locals suffer.”
In brief
Trees falling TREES will fall across the Geelong region to ensure safety from electrical accidents, Powercor has warned. The company said new regulations had introduced “different clearance requirements” and increased trimming requirements for trees threatening public safety.
Maccas confusion TWO MISGUIDED objections will cost Geelong’s council additional time and money to “tidy up” a McDonald’s planning application. A council report said the objectors wrongly assumed City Hall wanted to sell parkland to McDonald’s North Geelong but one refused to withdraw and council was unable to contact the other, forcing the plan to an independent panel.
Kayaker rescued POLICE have winched a missing kayaker to safety near Indented Head. Police said the man in his 50s left Elwood to paddle toward Portsea last Friday morning but struck trouble in a shipping channel near Portarlington.
Cruises increase GEELONG is set to host seven cruise ship visits in 2015, up four on initial expectations. Councillor Ron Nelson said the increase underlined the importance of developing a new Yarra St pier to berth cruise ships.
Social message TALKING up refugees and asylum seekers on social media will be the focus of the region’s councils alliance body next week. G21 said it wanted to share “positive stories” on Twitter and Facebook during Refugee Week. Locally Owned and Operated

Cats game to kick on with road safety message fun THE GEELONG Cats will kick a goal for road safety when they meet St Kilda at Simonds Stadium on Sunday. As part of the club’s Transport Accident Commission partnership, the round-13 encounter will encourage footy fans to put safety first when buying a new or used car. Crash-test dummies will be part of pre-game activities that will put fans in the running for prizes including a
trip to watch Geelong’s Gold Coast match, signed jumpers and a $500 Cats gift pack. Cats star defender Andrew Mackie, who drives a five-star Ford Territory, said safety features should be top of mind when buying a new car. “If you’re going to get behind the wheel you owe it to yourself and the people you care about to ensure you’re getting into the safest car possible,” Mackie said.
TAC chief executive officer Janet Dore said road trauma would be significantly reduced if everyone drove cars with the latest safety features. “There’s a misconception that five-star safety features come with five-star price tags but the reality is there are safe and affordable used vehicles available in every car class,” Ms Dore said. She urged readers to visit howsafeisyourcar.com.au before
handing over a cheque for a new or used car. Mackie this week met with young Cats fans Rafael Stojanovski, from St Mary’s Primary School, and Christian College’s Jackson Hanley, who will be the club’s round 13 mascots after winning a TAC competition rewarding safety at school crossings. The competition was promoted in last week’s Independent.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Rod Gurney at the food Picture: Reg Ryan relief centre. 121901
Hunger no game as relief runs out GEELONG’S hunger games are growing so serious the city’s main food relief service is running short of food. Even with greatly increased regular donations over recent months, Geelong Food Relief Centre still ran out of provisions last Saturday after assisting a record 110 families in just two hours. With almost 1000 jobs at Aloca and Ford to disappear in the next few months, the North Geelong centre is hunkering down for an extra heavy assault on its resources over the coming months. “I’m sure there’ll be more demand,” board member Ross Stephens told the Independent. “Alcoa has been a tremendous supporter of the Geelong community for many, many years. Lots of wage donations from Alcoa employees to
charities like Give Where You Live will cease. “Alcoa, Ford and Shell et cetera seem to be the predominant donors. You’d assume the requirements of the centre will increase. “We operate on vouchers from welfare organisations and they have to be able to finance those vouchers.” The food bank redeems vouchers for people referred by charities such as Uniting Care and St Vincent de Paul. The majority of its food resources are donated but it buys particular goods to ensure healthy, balanced packages are available to recipients. Charities are not billed for the vouchers until they are used. The relief centre this year began running a free monthly service for health care card-holders over and above its normal voucher operations. Mr Stephens said response had
been a steady 80 to 90 families at each session. But last Saturday brought an unusual flurry of clients, which exhausted the relief centre’s food supplies. “The demand was the highest it’s been,” Mr Stephens said. “This was due to two factors: greater need in the community and/or the monthly Saturdays are becoming better known.” Manager Rod Gurney said charities were sending more people to the relief centre and giving out more food vouchers. “I don’t think charities actually have enough funding for all the people they want to send,” he said. Mr Gurney expected pressure on the centre to grow with the impending Ford and Alcoa sackings. He also anticipated pressure from the cascading effect from related industries and services.

From page 1 The strategy proposed new courts for Bellarine Aquatic and Sports Centre and Drysdale Secondary College to meet population growth on the peninsula. Further facilities at Armstrong Creek Precincts and Lara West would be needed as development progressed, the strategy said. The region also needed mediumpriority facilities worth up to $28 million and low-priority facilities of around $23 million. Council sport and recreation portfolio-holder Jock Irvine said it was disappointing school facilities were often locked up outside school hours. Cr Irvine said the new indoor facilities would be truly multi-purpose, with LED-light systems marking out courts to replace a confusing existing combination of painted lines. Council would “put funding pressure” on state and federal governments to back commitments on increasing community health and fitness, he said.

Bully victim’s support ‘at risk’ By NOEL MURPHY THE MOTHER of high-profile Portarlington bullying victim Elijah Vetma has lashed out at the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which she says could leave him homeless. Jan Vetma feared an NDIS review would reduce the level of support provided to him. “My son is at risk of becoming homeless and left without adequate day support if (it is) not funded appropriately”, she posted on the Independent’s Facebook page.
“I will be fighting tooth and nail to maintain the services that he has been receiving. “It has put an enormous amount of stress on the family not knowing now due to the reassessment (whether) he will be worse off.” Elijah Vetma, who suffers Asperger’s and Tourette’s syndromes, attracted international attention six years ago when he went public about bullying at Bellarine Secondary College. Then aged 12, he said the bullies drove him to the point of suicide.
Ms Vetma’s concerns follow a growing litany of complaints about the NDIS trial in Geelong, one of four across Australia set up under the former Gillard Government. The Independent has in recent weeks reported cases of MS sufferers losing previous services and funding, a mother unable to obtain security assistance to prevent her 16-year-old intellectually handicapped son escaping home and a former Melbourne University health economist accusing the agency of delib-
erately cutting support, denying clients their rights and ignoring complaints. The NDIS has failed to respond to the Independent’s requests for comment but an incoming publicist for the agency commented on the paper’s Facebook page that such stories “won’t be happening” after she began work. Meanwhile, a mother of two children denied iPads recommended for communication purposes said she was rejected for work with the NDIS despite a degree in social work.
The woman, who said she was legally blind, told the Independent she was one of four social workers based in Geelong to be refused work with the NDIS . “They didn’t believe I had enough experience in doing assessment,” she said. “They didn’t take me on yet I know they took on one person with a CIII in disability who was a plumber and had never worked in the area. “They’re going on about how important it is to employ people with a disability and a degree - it’s a double kick in the backside.”
Our Darwin Defenders live on in college collection Boss wanted for By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN city centre plan
MEMORIES of Australia’s Pearl Harbour - the bombing of Darwin in February 1942 - were entrusted to a Geelong school in a moving ceremony this week. Geelong’s Darwin Defenders handed over materials including archival-quality books containing eyewitness accounts, military flags and depictions of the events to Geelong Baptist College. College coordinator Joy Findlay said the school was honoured to be entrusted with keeping alive the memories of the Darwin Defenders. “It’s sad because their numbers have dwindled to the point where none of the local members of the unit can march,” Ms Findlay said. “This year one of their favourite sons, Neil Webb, passed away, too. Neil had a very close relationship with the college. “It means a lot to them that they won’t be forgotten.” The college has been the custodian of the Darwin Defenders’ military colours for the past six years. “Since then we’ve marched each year in the ANZAC Day ceremony in Geelong carrying their colours and have attended important ceremonies in Geelong or Melbourne on the 19 February each year - the day war first came to Australia,” Ms Findlay said Japan launched the first of 64 air raids on Darwin 10 weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbour and four days after the fall of Singapore. The brutal 18-month bombardment was the first and largest single attack on Australia. More than 240 people died, up to 400 were wounded and eight of 47 ships in Darwin Harbour sunk.

A “BUSINESS-FOCUSSED” manager on a “generous salaray package” will oversee central Geelong’s revitalisation, according to council advertising Advertisements for the three-year contract position appeared last week before councillors voted on Tuesday to extend a committee overseeing the plan. The moves followed an Independent report last month on federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson setting a 12-month deadline for action on revitalising central Geelong. Mayor Darryn Lyons promised the following week quick action, saying revitalising central Geelong was “right up there” on his priority list. The advertising said the manager would lead a team to create a “smart, vibrant, thriving, liveable and successful 21st Century city centre”. The plan aimed to “bring transformational change to central Geelong” and “signal an open-forbusiness message”, the advertisement said. Cr Lyons has previously savaged City Hall bureaucrats for putting barriers in the way of business opportunities. Council this week added two more “independent experts” to its central Geelong taskforce special committee. Members are property developer Rory Costelloe, valuer Todd Devine, Faggs Mitre 10 boss Mark Edmonds, urban planner Roz Hansen, marketer Nicholas Heath and lawyer Dan Simmonds with the mayor, councillors Michelle Heagney and Andy Richards and City Hall’s next chief executive officer.

Friday 13th meets full moon, witch is exciting By NOEL MURPHY MOON-GAZERS are set for an unusual cosmic spectacle this week when two powerful omens, Friday the 13th and a full moon, coincide. The unusual cosmic confluence, which is not expected again until 2049, has local witches, surfers and astronomically-minded skywatchers with their eyes set upwards. “The occurrence is pretty rare I think and numerologists might make something of the 13/4 energy but it’s another lovely full moon for me and most witches I know,” Lesley-Caron Veater told the Independent. “I can’t speak for pagans, they tend to practice differently and belong to such a broad range of traditions.” Bells Beach musician and surfer Red Whyte is gearing up for another full moon party, a regular celebration he hosts on the Surf Coast. His band, Surfusion, will crank up its signature blues, rock and funky jazz sound for a Saturday night lunar celebration. “Back in the day they were really big and too many neighbours were complaining about the loud music,” he said. “These days it’s more a get-together between the opposite sexes around the fire with a free barbecue.” Surveyor Tony Murphy told the Independent the Friday 13th full moon, while interesting, was statistically unimportant. “We can get one to two Friday the 13ths in a year and 12 or 13 full moons,” he said. “I would expect a hit once every 20 years or so on average, so if it’s true that the next one is 35 years away then that’s not too surprising or even significant.”

Professor warns on coal spies By NOEL MURPHY

INDUSTRY and government spies could be monitoring activists opposed to Anglesea’s coalfuelled Alcoa power station, a university vice chancellor has warned. Clive Hamilton, a public ethics professor at Charles Sturt University, told the Independent groups like Surf Coast Air Action were likely to be under secret surveillance. The author, Greens member and climate change lobbyist has been outspoken about private and public-sector spying on environmental groups. “It’s fair to assume that every substantial anti-coal activist group is being spied on, both by private companies and by state or federal agencies,” he told the Independent. “Activities would include the placement of infiltrators and phone and email surveillance.” Prof Hamilton last week said “savvy campaigners” assumed their communications were routinely monitored. Writing at the academic website The Conversation, he said Greenpeace activists were in the habit of turning off their mobile phones when discussing campaigns. “They leave them in another room under a pile of magazines, aware that they can be turned on
remotely and used as listening devices,” he wrote. “The video and audio facilities of their computers can also be used for snooping by outside forces. Putting masking tape over webcams is now a standard precaution.” Alcoa declined to comment when the Independent asked whether the Anglesea acitivists should be concerned about Prof Hamilton’s warning. “Alcoa has no comment on this,” spokesperson Nichola Holgate said. But a State Government spokesperson rejected the surveillance suggestion. “These are absurd allegations and won’t be dignified with a response,” he said. Surf Coast Air Action said was unaware of any surveillance of its activities. “SCAA has no evidence of this,” Dr Jacinta Morahan told the Independent. “We are a small communitybased group seeking to affect change in our coastal town. “We maintain good relations with Alcoa, as witnessed by our regular attendance at their community consultation meetings. “We make no secret of our campaign tactics and information about what we stand for is readily available on our website.”

Man on a mission after conference By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A TONGUE-in-cheek remark at an agribusiness conference two years ago has landed Herne Hill’s Chris Walsh a spot on a Victorian super trade mission leaving for south-east Asia on Saturday. The south-eastern Australia territory manager for Seednet said he had mentioned the benefits of including young agribusiness professionals on trade missions. “Victorian Agriculture Minister Peter Walsh, who opened the conference, responded that it would be good and ... I was invited to apply.” Mr Walsh said he was keen to research market conditions for agricultural exports to south-east Asia. “We need to hone in on
what potential there is in south-east Asia and what ways there are to increase exports.” The Independent has previously reported on the region’s “massive” opportunity to export produce through Avalon Airport. Produce king Frank Costa said the potential for Avalon exports was comparable to business throughput at Melbourne Airport. Mr Walsh said Australia was increasingly struggling to export because of high costs and distance from international markets. He planned to “ask a lot of questions” during the six-day trade mission for a report to government and industry on his return.

120 Ford staff to go next week
Future on hold
By NOEL MURPHY
FORD Geelong workers are counting down the days as the company prepares to cut 120 more jobs from the auto plant next week. Workers have been reluctant to take up voluntary redundancy packages in hope of better deals if they hold out until next Friday. The company has gone to ground, failing to respond to calls for comment.
MISSION: Chris Walsh at work on the land.
But Australian Manufacturing Workers Union warned the sackings would aggravate Geelong’s understated unemployment problem.
“It’s very disappointing that
there are redundancies,” AMWU vehicle division spokesman Dave Smith said. “We know the plant’s closing in 2016 and people have made plans around being there until then. News of the down balance is disappointing and worrying. “It’s not a great climate to be going out into the jobs market because of all the closures and it’s of particular concern to the union that our members are able to find replacement work.” Mr Smith said unemployment was “out of control” in Geelong. “It’s hidden by the fact if you’re employed one hour a month you’re considered full-time.
“If you delve deeper into ABS figures they suggest unemployment is probably 12 per cent on average and some regions like Geelong are worse, particularly with youth unemployment.” Workers at the plant told the Independent many were resigned to involuntary redundancy. “It’s been dragging on and on. Not too many appear upset they’re hanging out for the compulsory redundancy for the extra cash,” one worker said. “You’d have to have rocks in your head to volunteer now when a compulsory separation could mean up to an extra $15,000 on top of what they’re offering.”

1650 homes escape fire-risk rating REMOVING 1652 local housing lots from maps of bushfire-prone areas will save their owners an average $3200, according to Victoria’s Planning Minister. Matthew Guy said City of Greater Geelong had the state’s most properties removed from bushfire-prone area (BPA) maps after a review found “previous mapping anomalies” Most of the lots were in new housing estates at Armstrong Creek, Highton, Clifton Springs,
Matthew Guy
Leopold, and Ocean Grove. “As development progresses, bushfire risk, including grass fire risk, is often reduced,” Mr Guy said. “We are removing unnecessary red tape for landowners and removing the cost burden of complying with these regulations.” He said buyers of blocks in new estates should still check the status of their properties because some might still be designated as in bushfire prone areas.
Keep clothes and footwear out of your recycling bin. The recycling facility in South Geelong is not equipped to recycle fabric. If the items are in good condition, donate them to a charity during business hours. If the clothes are not wearable, cut them up for craft usage or rags. Otherwise, they all go into the red lid garbage bin.

Letters Steps to NDIA review I WRITE regarding stories in the 6 June Independent about some NDIS users’ concerns with the outcomes of their engagement with the NDIS in the Barwon launch site. As Dr Katrina Alford stated, “the Regional Information and Advocacy Council (RIAC) has been funded to take care of complaints about the NDIS”. However, RIAC’s involvement is only part of the process to be followed in instances of dissatisfaction with a National Disability insurance Agency (NDIA) decision. The first step is to ask the NDIA for the decision to be reviewed internally. An advocate may assist the person in asking for a review and supporting them with the process. A number of advocacy agencies are operating in the Barwon launch site, including RIAC. Step two is applying to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) if the person is still dissatisfied after the internal reviews. The AAT is the external merits review body for the NDIS. Upon making application to the AAT, the person will be made aware of the availability of a support person. Step three is the support person assisting applicants in navigating the process of AAT review of NDIA decisions. The support person role is undertaken by RIAC external merits review support officers. Step four involves raising complex or novel legal issues but limited funding is available for legal aid commissions to provide assistance. Steve Doran Regional Information and Advocacy Council chief executive officer
Pension a cakewalk I AM no “cake-eater”, Mr Dale (Letters, 6 June). I am not, to quote you, “loaded with money, houses and inherited wealth yet receiving a taxpayer-funded pension and benefits”. My sole source of income is the ultra-generous age pension and I am still paying off a small mortgage on a very humble home. I can still afford to eat three decent meals a day and meet my basic living costs without whingeing. Unlike some, I am very grateful for the support I receive from taxpayers in retirement. Why shouldn’t I be? Australia’s age pension is the best in the Southern Hemisphere in a world where so many people are forced to live on less than $2 a day. Michael J Gamble Belmont
War of words erupts over power station claims REGARDING last week’s Geelong Independent story in which AGL and Alcoa alleged that Surf Coast Air Action’s (SCAA) recent media release was “misleading”, SCAA rejects the allegation. AGL responded to a detailed letter from SCAA requesting that AGL publicly rule itself out as a potential purchaser of the Anglesea coal mine and power station. The matters raised in SCAA’s letter expressly included the negative health and environmental impacts that would result from the continued operation of the facility. AGL responded by saying it was not its intention to buy the Anglesea coal mine and power station and referred to the “matters raised in your letter”, which “would certainly be taken into account before we decided to make an investment”. In short, SCAA’s position is that the SCAA and AGL letters ultimately speak for themselves and, when those letters are read
CLAIMS: Alcoa’s Anglesea plant is at the centre of local debate. objectively, the media release was not misleading as was alleged. Jacinta Morahan Surf Coast Air Action IN RESPONSE to the Independent’s story on the Alcoa power station, Surf Coast Air Action does not present the views of all Anglesea residents, either. Many local people saying, “The protesters are not speaking for me”. The power station has been
here over 40 years. How many of the agitators moved here after its establishment? The school’s proximity to the mine is not a strong point for closure of the power station because the school recently relocated closer to the site. If our air is so poisoned why do we have so many active 80 and 90-year-olds in our midst? Also, there is no obvious evidence of a higher-than-average rate of respiratory illness or cancer among Anglesea residents. Furthermore, our town is never under a cloud of pollution that blights the countryside, such as can be seen in Gippsland mining areas. It is interesting to note that Japan and Germany, which have been leaders in green energy, are now returning to coal as a reliable and cheaper source of power. Melva Stott Anglesea

TWO RECENT elections for mayor cost City of Greater Geelong ratepayers $1 million. Since then we’ve seen a plethora of social media, socially engineered input, possibly equating to propaganda. The elected council and City employees should show us where we’ve benefited from the new regime! A Christmas tree for $500,000 to $750,000, a new crest, advertising on mugs, a horse riding fall et cetera ad infinitum - show us where non-government money has been injected into Geelong, producing jobs. Remember, folks: much of government money for development was locked in before the present regime. Citizens, attend fortnightly Geelong council open meetings, prepare and ask questions of your elected ratepayer employees. You owe it to yourselves. DN Tomkins Herne Hill
IT HAS no doubt been a shock to many who voted in the Abbott Government that it wants to implement such heartless and destructive changes. I only remember three Liberal slogans during the election campaign and not much emphasis on this revolutionary budget. No doubt the Liberals hid these changes in the fine print of their policy documents. Now we have another slogan, that there is no alternative to these cuts, that we all have to share the pain and pay off Australia’s debt. There are arguments that large, sustained debt is not good for a country. However, my bone of contention is that this budget hits lower-income people far harder than anyone else. There are many alternatives to this. First, the carbon and mining taxes should be retained. How dumb is it to cry poor then cut two reasonably painless and, in the case of the carbon tax, very beneficial sources of government revenue.
Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au PO Box 407, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799
Second, the billions of dollars of fuel subsidies given to mining companies should be removed. Third, tax concessions for wealthy superannuation contributors need to be reduced, negative gearing on rental housing should be eliminated and we could buy a few less joint strike fighters. It is folly also to reduce funding to scientific research when we want to become an innovative country not solely reliant on the sale of raw materials. The Abbott Government operates on an ideological privatise-everything approach and an Americanstyle social arrangement. No thanks! Leigh Adamson Belmont
Maybe it’s the Sun JUST HOW concerned should the average citizen be about humanity’s carbon emissions? Two recently published books challenge the notion that climate change is primarily driven by humanity. Professor Fritz Vahenholt and Dr Sebastian Lüning, in their The Neglected Sun, along with Henrik Svensmark’s The Chilling Stars, point to the Sun and cosmic forces as the main shapers of Earth’s climate. The same goes for all planets in the solar system. Prof Vahrenholt was a former believer in global warming theory but after having examined the science came to a different conclusion. Both Prof Vahrenholt and Dr Lüning are distinguished German scientists. They argue that the effect of the Sun’s activity on climate change has been either scarcely known or overlooked and demonstrate that the critical cause of global temperature change has been and continues to be the Sun’s activity. The reality is that man’s carbon emissions bear little impact on climate change. Mr Svensmark’s book is in similar vein. His findings are based on his research at the Danish National Space Centre. His basic thesis is that an interplay of the Sun and cosmic rays - sub-atomic particles from exploded stars - seem to have more effect on the climate than man-made carbon dioxide. A NIGHT at the theatre is rarely a life-changing experience but that’s the aim of production company Centre Stage as it prepares to put on a show in hometown Geelong. The company will stage Rent as a charity fundraiser for deadly Marfan syndrome. The production relies on a voluntary cast and crew hailing from Geelong, Colac and Melbourne. Production director and CenterStage president David Greenwood said donating all profits to charity was the company’s point of difference. CenterStage put on two notfor-profit shows a year with “massive success” despite relying on unpaid amateur actors, he said. “We’re not looking for the biggest profits, so we’re spending that money where it counts,” Greenwood explained. “There’s no pressure to make a profit, it just works out. “We’re trying to stay innovative and fresh and bring something new to Geelong.” Greenwood said he was extremely proud of the five-year old theatre company, which used each show to raise money for a different charity.
CenterStage had donated over $80,000 to causes including Relay for Life, Cancer Council, St Laurence Community Services and Geelong Hospital Appeal, he said The new produciton’s profit would go to a foundation assisting sufferers of Marfan syndrome, a rare disorder affecting the central nervous system, heart, lungs and spinal cord. Rent author and composer Jonathan Larson died from the syndrome in 1996, the day before the show’s off-Broadway opening. Greenwood said his company was all about supporting Geelong performing arts. “We’re very lucky to have such a wide scope of actors and they’re all doing it for the cause. “We just bought a building in North Geelong, so we’re launching free acting and theatre workshops for the public. It’s so people who don’t have access to those facilities, or can’t afford it, can gain those skills. “Hopefully we can meet a lot of new faces and change some lives.” Greenwood said Rent would play nine shows over three weeks at Geelong Performing Arts Centre from 27 June.

Winter’s write time to dream
By SAM BRIMACOMBE
CERES and Winchelsea will host winter weekends of literary delights in the second half of June. Theatre of the Winged Unicorn’s Winter Dreaming combines the works of Katherine Mansfield, Dylan Thomas and William Shakespeare. The performances take place over two weekends, with an ensemble cast performing three-half hour blocks of adaptations and dramatisations including short stories, poetry and Welsh folk music. Theatre of the Winged Unicorn’s Elaine Mitchell said Win-
ter Dreaming would offer intitmate experiences. “It’s very boutique and you can talk to the people involved afterward if you want to have a discussion about the writers or the poetry,” she said. “We’ve aimed it at people who like writing and good literature. Literature isn’t just for studying at university; it’s made to be enjoyed and celebrated - that’s why we do it.” Mitchell said the works of the three selected writers complemented each other, so she was excited to present them together in winter. “It’s extremely rich in image-

ry, and it’s a great opportunity to bring these words to the public.” Mitchell said she was staging the weekends in June becase “a lot of people hibernate in the winter” and she wanted to bring them out. Winchelsea’s Barwon Park Mansion will host Winter Dreaming on 21 and 22 June, with acts in different rooms of the house, including a drawing room where an open fire will add ambience and warmth. The second performance will be at Ceres’ The Scarecrow Patch Studio on 28 and 29 June. Mitchell said more information was available by phoning her on 52491350

TRIBUTE SHOW - SAT 24th MAY
MORNING MELODIES THE STORY OF O: Dean Bourne sings the hits of Roy Orbison at GPAC this weekend.
Bourne to play music of The Big O By SAM BRIMACOMBE A CHILDHOOD listening to ’50s rockers tuned Dean Bourne into the music of Roy Orbison. Now he’s travelling Australia playing the music of the man dubbed The Big O, with a gig pencilled in for Geelong Performing Arts Centre this Saturday night. Bourne will appear with the concisely-named Fallon, who will add the songs of Del Shannon in the combined tribute show. Bourne said he “just kind of fell into” playing Orbison’s music.
“I’ve been playing guitar and singing since I was young. I grew up listening to the music of the 50s, particularly Roy Orbison,” he explained. “I’ve been doing Orbison for 17 years. I did one Orbison show and then got asked to do another and eventually my own tribute show and here we are today, still going strong.” Bourne said the show included a seven-piece band playing Orbison hits such as Pretty Woman, Crying, Dream Baby, Leah, Penny Arcade, Danny Boy, Only The Lonely, In Dreams, Candy Man,
You Got It, Workin’ For The Man and Running Scared. Bourne, who has been described as “Australia’s Orbison”, said the appetite for the music of Orbison and Shannon had helped him develop a tour of regional Australia, which continued until November. “There’s such a big demand for the music,” he explained. “It’s timeless, it really is, and I think people can relate to Roy’s music, I guess the music of the 50s and 60s in general. It was a very peaceful time.”

SANDSTONE Cafe has celebrated its third birthday recently and owner Simon Parrott thanks loyal customers for supporting his Grovedale venue. He invites diners who have yet to experience the quality food and service from the suburban “restaurant disguised as a cafe” to visit. “Geelong people are embracing the growing suburban food and wine culture – we foster this culture at Sandstone Cafe,” Simon says. Simon celebrates the cafe’s contemporary Australian menu with a seafood specialty.
“For quality-cooked seafood, visit us.” The cafe is the perfect place to celebrate birthdays and functions throughout winter. Up to 50 diners can enjoy the winter sun eating outdoors in Sandstone Cafe’s private courtyard. Diners sitting inside can enjoy the sun through the cafe’s big windows. “It’s a very bright, warm venue,” Simon says. The café boasts a familyfriendly atmosphere. Sandstone Cafe will cater to any dietary requirements, just
notify the friendly staff. The venue can host 130 guests for stand-up functions or 85 at seated events, indoors. Sandstone Cafe runs a dinner service from 6pm Fridays and Saturdays, but will open during the week for private functions. Dinner guests can enjoy any two courses from the cafe’s menu for $35. The fully-licensed venue has a wide variety of local wines, beers and ciders available. Sandstone Cafe is at 284 Torquay Rd, phone 5244 2343 or visit sandstonecafe.com.au.

Musee D’Orsay and retracing the steps of 1900s artists around the streets of Montmartre “Also in Paris I met and interviewed artist Michael Salerno. He was incredibly lovely and accommodating and even gave me two limited-edition out-of-print ‘zines in which I’d expressed an interest.” The London leg featured Camden markets and trips to various galleries and museums. Emma’s London highlights were interviewing artist Maxwell Doig and visiting the original storefront of fashion icon Vivienne Westwood. “There we met a scruffy old
dog, which we thought was the shop dog but it turned out to be Vivienne’s mother’s dog,” Emma says. “All in all it was a complete whirlwind adventure full of many wonderful memories and experiences. I’ve come back a moreinspired and motivated artist and student and cannot wait to hear the stories from the next lucky group.” Academy of Design Australia will conduct and open day on Sunday 10 August. A RECENT study tour of Paris and London this year broadened the horizons of students at Academy of Design Australia. Third-year visual arts student Emma Michaelis says the tour was “amazing”. “I loved visiting Paris,” she says “Every street corner, every café, every roof was breathtakingly lovely and we spent a good deal of time just staring slackjawed and starry-eyed at all the sights surrounding us.” Emma says Parisian highlights included inspecting Toulouse Lautrec paintings and other art at

Patient transport is sure to offer plenty of job opportunities given the Geelong region’s ageing population and influx of new residents.
Patient transport career option
OPEN DAY & INFO SESSIONS 10am - 3pm Thursday 26 JUNE Register on our website or call us for full details.
DURING 2013 patient-transport contractors carried out more than 160,000 transports in Victoria alone amid a shortage of paramedics in the state. But a regional TAFE is now offering residents of the Geelong region to kick-start a career in patient transport with courses in bayside Melbourne. Coordinator Jennifer Smith says the Certificate III in NonEmergency Client Transport and Diploma of Paramedical Science
(Ambulance) offers wide-reaching benefits. “Private contractors are a significant part of Ambulance Victoria’s patient-transport arrangements across the state, which increases the availability of emergency ambulances,” she explains. “Being qualified to transport people unable to drive to and from their medically-related appointments means you’re enhancing lives.” Ms Smith says patient trans-
port officers can train as paramedics. “Completing this certificate gives you credits with us, and a Wodonga TAFE diploma gives you a pathway into a bachelor program at university.” Two courses start in July and August at DECA Altona North, 29-45 Millers Rd. More information is available by phoning 1300 MYTAFE (1300 69 8233) or visiting wodongatafe. edu.au.

TONY Quinn’s life has literally changed since completing a dual certificate in aged and home and community care in February. As a 45-year-old production manager at Golden Farms, formerly Steggles, Tony realised he wanted to change his life’s direction after his grandfather fell ill and was required to go into permanent care. Tony’s work was predominantly computer-and-administrative-based, so it gave him few skills he needed to help his grandfather. Tony was motivated and registered for the Dual Certificate III in Aged Care and Home and Community Care with Karingal Training in 2013. After completing a placement as part of his training with low-

“I feel like I have a sense of purpose by contributing and helping people each day. It’s uplifting and good for the soul.” Dual Certificate III in Aged Care and Home and Community Care qualifications provide an entry point for people and the practical skills, knowledge and confidence to provide care and support for the elderly and disabled in their homes or within residential care facilities. Karingal Training manager Brett Cassar says the course is particularly suited to anyone entering the industry or gaining a qualification to formalise their practical skills. “All students who completed their placement with us last year are now employed, which is great for the industry,” he says.

Michael Clements at work in the Tintmaster workshop.
Many benefits of tinting with the specialists at Tintmaster WINDOW tinting makes cars look cool but Tintmaster can give many more reasons why it’s worth tinting with unique Ultra-Carbon film, the highest performance product on the market. First, it keeps the interior cooler, especially in summer. Tinting protects occupants from harmful UVA rays, which can cause skin cancer and premature ageing, and also helps block UV rays that can lead to cracking and facing of vehicles’ interior surfaces. Window tinting film helps hold shattered glass together in the event of an accident so it doesn’t smash all over occupants’ faces. Tinting also removes glare from the Sun and other headlights, reducing the chances of accidents. Burglary risks are also reduced because tinting decreases the visibility of contents inside cars, such as mobile phones or other valuables. Air-conditioning is cheaper to run because it doesn’t have to work so hard with Tintmaster tint, meaning reduced load on the engine for improved fuel economy. However, installation is critical to window tinting and Tintmaster is expert in applying its products to all models of cars. Staff undertake thorough training and stay up to date with changes in tinting techniques and technologies. Tinting with Tintmaster usually costs between $250 and $500 and takes around half a day. Whether its black windows for great looks or achieving maximum heat and UV protection, Tintmaster has the solution to any tinting requirement. Meeting individual requirements is a specialty of the company, with prospective clients always welcome to talk to the staff about the best window tint job for any car. Tintmaster has been servicing the Geelong area for 11 years.

Stadium set to host A-League A-LEAGUE soccer team Melbourne Victory will play a series of home games at Simonds Stadium over the next three years, Geelong Mayor Cr Darryn Lyons has announced. “Melbourne Victory is one of the top sides in the national competition and I’m very excited to announce we’re partnering with them to host A League soccer in Geelong,” Cr Lyons said. “We have been working very hard behind the scenes to attract more events at Simonds Stadium and today’s announcement is great example of what is achievable for our national standard stadium. “This is an historic announcement in that Melbourne Victory will be the first national team to schedule home games at Simonds Stadium other than the Geelong Cats.”
Simonds Stadium hosted an Asian Champions League round in February when Melbourne Victory took on Thailand’s Muangthong United. “This Asian Champions League match drew greater crowd numbers in Geelong than equivalent matches at Melbourne venues - and was a great basis for Council to negotiate the next stage of our partnership with Melbourne Victory,” Cr Lyons said. Deputy mayor Bruce Harwood said City Hall would continue working with Victory “on more opportunities into the future”. “The three-game package creates a great platform for us to develop an ongoing relationship with Melbourne Victory,” Cr Harwood said. “Simonds Stadium is re-
nowned for the quality of its playing surface and its sporting and spectator amenities - add to that the large soccer following here in Geelong and there is definitely potential to extend beyond the current contract.” Cr Harwood said the matches would be scheduled during the peak holiday season when up to 1.3 million people were based in the region. Victorian Sport Minister Damian Drum revealed the Napthine Government would pay $50,000 to secure the Geelong matches. Victory expected “up to” 10,000 fans to visit Geelong for the matches, he said. “The partnership will allow the Melbourne Victory to build a supporter base in the region while promoting participation in the sport.”

Saints marching in for 40th event SAINTS Hockey Club has been synonymous with the sport in the region for 40 years, so its members figured the milestone was worth celebrating. Club stalwart Joyce Climpson said a number of original players were still going strong at the Geelong club, including 800game players and coaches Alan and Peter Climpson. The club also boasts three 700-gamers in Greg McGrane, Karen Kolsch and Peter Kolsch, also still active. Eleven of its original players have racked up a mammoth 5600 games between them, many still
active in either coaching, team managing or umpiring. The club got off to a great start after winning its inaugural premiership in 1974, defeating Winchelsea 2-1 in a replay after the first grand final ended in a one-all draw. Captain-coach Nick Goldsmith won the association’s best and fairest to top off the year. “A number of players have played representative hockey for Geelong and some have gone onto represent Victoria,” Climpson said. “Tegan Purser has represented Victoria in all age groups from under-12 to under-21 and Ellen Chaplin is hopefully fol-
lowing in her footsteps with representation at under-12 and 14 levels. “Scott O’Reilly has also represented the state as an umpire. He is currently on the state panel for umpiring and has umpired the Australian under-21 titles as well as an international series in the Pacific islands.” Climpson said the club hoped to get back in touch with as many past players as possible for a 40th anniversary celebration on 28 June at Buckley’s Entertainment Centre. She asked past players to get in touch at saintshockeyclub@ hotmail.com or the club’s Facebook page.
Younger chalks up wildcard entry A Geelong man has snookered a chance to compete for $500,000 in prize money. Johl Younger will take on competitors from around the country and overseas in an Australian Snooker Goldfields Open. Organisers announced this week that Younger had earned a wildcard entry to the event, which they described as “Australasia’s most lucrative snooker tournament”. Competitors will converge on Bendigo for the tournament from 30 June to 6 July. Younger will join Western Australian Matthew Bolton as
Australia’s two wildcards in the event. The pair will have to win their way through qualifying rounds to reach the main event. Younger has an ideal training opportunity as the owner of central Geelong’s Slate Pool Lounge. Organisers said the tournament had also attracted Belgian teen Luca Brecel, who at 17 last year made world headlines as the youngest player to ever compete in the final stages of the world championships. Australia’s leading player at Bendigo will be world numberPOT LUCK: Geelong’s Johl Younger. three Neil Robertson.

IndySport War on error at halfway point By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE GLASS is half full for Geelong coach Chris Scott as he takes stock at the halfway mark of the season. While the doubters have been out in force after Geelong’s topsy-turvy form over the past six weeks, Scott still likes to focus on the positives. With the spotlight squarely on the Cats rather than St Kilda, being at home again on Sunday afternoon will be an added boost this week. “It is a good time to take a step back, particularly with a nine-day break, and have a look at the things we’ve done really well,” Scott smiled at this week’s media conference. “And we have done a lot of things well,” he insisted. “The games where we’ve been really good
FOCUSSED: Chris Scott is looking forward to the second half of the season. 121898 Picture: Reg Ryan around the ball we’ve been hard to beat.” When it came to improvement, Scott said the inconsistency so far reflected the evenness
of the competition. “The inconsistency doesn’t so much show that there are huge problems in our game, it just means that, because the competition is so even, when we’re off it hurts us a lot more than even it has in the previous few years. “I think most sides would say they’re striving for consistency but we’re really positive at the halfway mark knowing that there are a lot of things we can improve with the specifics of our game. “But we’re going to have to fight really hard and train really hard to improve those things in a short space of time. “Because there aren’t easy games in the competition you don’t really get a chance to take a breather, so we’re going to have to push on and work on playing as close to our best as soon as possible
because that’s what it’s going to take.” Rectifying unforced errors would be a focus at training this week, Scott admitted. “The pure unforced errors (against Carlton), where there wasn’t enough pressure to justify the poor skill level, was high. We did give the ball back too easily.” Getting back proven AFL performers in Allen Christensen and Josh Caddy excited the coach. “We’re really looking forward to getting (them) back in the team. It’s amazing what two inside midfielders do to the balance of your team. “I don’t think we’ve had our best group together this year, so we’re excited at the prospect of having 32 players who all have a genuine chance of being in our best 22.”
New coach puts Warriors back in the winners’ circle On the
bite
By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong’s new coach has begun his reign with a 3-0 win over St Alban’s Saints in National Premier League. Micky Colina’s men notched up their fifth win of the season on Sunday thanks to a looping kick from range by Robert Zadworny and a brace for skipper Michael Anderson, returning to the starting line up after a prolonged knee injury. The opening 25 minutes were fast and frantic as both sides piled on the pressure. St Alban’s had the better chances, with Juso Julardzija and Ryan McGufiie involved in consecutive efforts on target but had their efforts thwarted by Daniel Zilic in a terrific performance. North Geelong was more eager to win the ball and play with controlled movement as opposed to the speed of the match’s opening stages. On 35 minutes Nathan Long cut the ball to an unmarked Anderson who drove his shot into Saints keeper Stjepan Gal who bundled it over the line. The structure was unchanged for the Warriors but the new placement of particular players seemed to agree with the team overall to make the turnovers of weeks gone by a distant memory. The Warriors were stronger in desire for the ball but not without moments of concern as Michael Grgic overran a high ball that skimmed off his head to find Julardzija whose shot was perfectly palmed around the post by Zilic. The Warriors went two up just before half time when Zadworny was found on his own on the edge of the box to place his shot in the top right corner of goal. St Alban’s came out with intent in the second half and soon worked a chance for Julardzija whose lobbed deflection looked goal bound only for Zilic to push it away. St Alban’s pressed high, leaving its players open for the counter. North Geelong responded by notching up its third as Long crossed across the pitch for Anderson to slide in and smash the ball into the net. Colina was subdued after his victory on debut. “A win’s always great but it hasn’t quite sunk in yet,” he said. “We made a few minor changes to the defensive structure and I’m rapt for the lads.” This Saturday North Geelong hosts Richmond, which has mirrored the Warriors’ experience so far this year. Richmond is enjoying a patch of form after turning around a mistakeriddled start of the year and a change in coach, now finding itself with three wins on the trot. The challenge for the Warriors is to build consistency after last weekend’s solid performance.

Salmon, pinkies from waterfront GEELONG’S waterfront provided fast-paced action right over the long weekend. Australian salmon averaging 1kg, which have been hanging around for a few weeks, were landed on Gulp three-inch minnow soft plastics in either Smelt or Watermelon Pearl colours. Anglers chasing the salmon noted that allowing the lures to sink below the fish sometimes caught some respectably-sized pinkie snapper. Joe Han and son George fished the Limeburner’s Point boat ramp rock wall last Friday, catching pinkies to 40cm along with six garfish to 42cm. St Leonards was consistent for squid. Anglers fishing the weed beds in 5m to 6m had the best results, with Yamashita size-3 squid jigs the standout lure. Portland had an influx of anglers seeking southern bluefin tuna. Anglers fishing out wide encountered smaller albacore, while school-sized tuna were taken in closer on the ever-reliable Rapala X-Rap 30. Numerous anglers returned to report that the tuna were still holding in close off Port Fairy, taking small metal lures of 25g when feeding on the surface. Ben Mclean and son Angus trolled skirted lures in 40m off Port Fairy on Sunday morning, taking bluefin to 15kg on Richter skirts. The pair tried again Monday morning but found the fishing tougher in the calmer conditions. I ventured down to the Curdies River in search of bream. The fishing was tough on lure but I saw anglers fishing live shrimp catch bream to 38cm throughout the lake section of the system. Alex Hagarth tied a wooly bugger and a wormpattern fly which he put through their paces for two feisty rainbow trout taken in the Leithbridge area. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir produced some chunky Redfin on classic Pegron tiger minnow lures fished between the prominent weed beds. Just down the road, West Barwon Reservoir fished well for smaller rainbow trout on pink Tassie Devils cast off the rock wall. Anglers fishing around sunset did best. Lake Bullen Merri remained productive for Chinook salmon. Fishing deep with either bait or lure was essential. With rivers and streams closed to trout fishing until midnight 5 September, attention has turned to the lakes. Bullen Merri, Purrembete and Wendouree have been stocked well, so they should provide excellent fishing for both boat and land-based anglers this winter months.
