Top cop says drug crisis is set to drive crime...
Ice avalanche By MELISSA MEEHAN ICE will be the biggest challenge for local police over the next few years according to Yarra Ranges’ top cop. Superintendent Graeme Arthur, who is the Victoria Police Divisional Commander of Division Two, which includes Yarra Ranges, Knox and Maroondah, spoke to the Mail exclusively last week about the crystal methamphetamine (ice) problem in the area. “It’s (the ice issue) is our biggest challenge of the next few years,” Supt Arthur said. “If we get rid of the ice problem, we would see a major reduction in crime.” Supt Arthur said the same sorts of crimes were happening with heroin users when he was a young policeman in the 1980s and ’90s. But the nature of that drug meant that users were often dopey and drowsy when they got their hit. “Now ice has a totally different effect,” he said. “Sometimes they are awake for five days and have a heightened sense of awareness and are alert and often are committing more crimes while they are affected by the drug. “They are not only extremely aggressive but they have no recollection of what they have done or are doing.” He said the ice epidemic was a driver for much of the volume of crime in the division, which included thefts from cars, theft of cars and other burglaries. “Right across the division, there has been an 8 per cent rise in volume crime,” he said. “The Yarra Ranges is up the same amount, and there is a reason for that. “I’m not saying it’s ice for all, but we believe there is a direct link.” Supt Arthur said the ice problem in the Yarra Ranges was no worse than other areas and that there had been dramatic increases everywhere.
He said that police were aware that Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs were responsible for a lot of the distribution and manufacture of ice and that’s why there was a concentrated effort by police to target these groups. “We’ve done a lot of work on OMCG in the area, Kilsyth, Bayswater, and most would remember a recent raid on a licensed premises and gymnasium in Healesville,” he said. “We also rely on information from members of the pubic, it’s not just a policing issue; it’s a whole of community issue. “Our motto is ‘if you see something, say something’.” The expensive nature of ice and the increase in crime has a direct link, according to Supt Arthur. “It’s now costing users between $700 and $1000 a gram,” he said. “This is why we have addicts breaking into cars and shops – they are selling anything they can get their hands on.” He said because of the expense, one addict would, in effect, cause a mini crime wave on their own and mentioned a recent spate of thefts from cars in Upwey and Boronia that could be linked to drug use. “Burglaries in cafes, car washes petrol stations and other small shops that might leave money in tills overnight is up by 15 to 20 per cent,” he said. “It’s about anywhere they can get their hands on money and the general link to these is ice.” Local police also discovered and arrested a syndicate last year in which ice was bought with stolen computers and iPads. “We had over 100 school burglaries last year where they were stealing laptops and computers,” Supt Arthur said. Hot spot is out of the shadows IT WAS a dark, shadowy hot spot for graffiti – but the Upper Ferntree Gully CFA turned it into a highlight along the train line. Captain Peter Smith said that the brigade was aware
the dark alley behind its fire station between the train line was an area that was not too pretty. So members got together, removed shrubs and trees and enlisted the help of a lo-
cal graffiti artist to give the wall a makeover. “We were able to secure some funding from the Knox Council and get a local guy to create a mural,” Capt Smith said.

Club scales the heights By RUSSELL BENNETT ONE of the hills most important community organisations is being celebrated through an exhibit at the Emerald Museum. The Rotary Club of Emerald and District has become an integral part of the community since it was chartered on 28 March 1980 and the current display at the museum celebrates its contribution to the town. The club is involved in a range of local and international community engagement projects each year including the All American Car Rally held at Gembrook, the
Great Community Raffle held in partnership with Ferntree Gully Nissan, and the Kids’ Fun Run with Thomas which recently donated more than $150,000 to the William Angliss Hospital’s paediatric ward. The club also sponsors the Australian Himalayan Foundation’s Teacher Training Program in Nepal in memory of former Rotary club member and the photographer on the Hillary-Norgay first ascent of Mt Everest in 1953, Alfred ‘Greg’ Gregory. Mr Gregory’s contribution to his local Rotary community is also celebrated as part of the exhibit. He was involved in Emerald and
District Rotary from 1995 until his death in 2010. The museum exhibit contains photographs and objects from the Everest climb as well as others that detail his life and accomplishments. Mr Gregory explored and led a host of expeditions in the remote Himalayan and Andean regions at a time when the areas he visited were unknown and unmapped. He spent a lifetime travelling on photographic assignments around the world and his pictures are still regularly syndicated to 35 countries. Along with his wife Sue, he pro-
duced many classic photojournalistic stories through the famous Tom Blau (Camera Press) news agency in London. To get involved with the Rotary Club of Emerald and District, visit www.emeraldrotary.org.au or email info@emeraldrotary.org.au. The current exhibition at the Emerald Museum will run until 30 June. The museum is open each Wednesday from 10am to 3pm and Sunday from 1.30pm to 4pm, or by appointment. For more information visit www.emeraldmuseum.org.au.
Super standards for child care By REBECCA BILLS SHERBROOKE Children’s Centre has exceeded national quality standards for early childhood care and education. Sherbrooke Children’s Centre co-ordinator Lynda McSolvin said it was a very nice surprise to be marked so highly. “It’s important to have quality childcare everywhere,” she said. “We are an integrated service in a very natural environment with a strong community feel. “We have an open door environment, too, so children can selflearn and siblings can mix.” The centre was independently assessed earlier this year as part of the National Quality Framework, an agreement between all Australian governments to work together to provide better educational and
developmental outcomes for children. The assessment covered seven quality areas - educational programming, health, safety, physical environment, staffing arrangements, relationships, and collaborative partnerships. Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister said the assessment outcomes highlight Sherbrooke Children’s Centre’s commitment to delivering high quality early years education and care. She noted that, as of the end of March this year, only 26 per cent of the assessed early years education and care services exceeded the national quality standard in four of the seven areas. “For Sherbrooke Children’s Centre to exceed national quality standards in all seven assessment areas demonstrates we are leading
in childhood education practice,” she said. Cr McAllister said access to high quality early education and care is integral for building confidence, resilience and healthy growth, and for setting children up for primary school and beyond. “Exceeding the national quality standards demonstrates our commitment to delivering high quality programs and building strong foundations for children,” she said. “I’d like to commend the staff at Sherbrooke Children’s Centre for their hard work and passion for early years learning and development.” Sherbrooke Children’s Centre is now hoping to apply for the excellent rating which can only be awarded by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.

Circuit on track WORKS are underway at Pepi’s Land to create a circuit path through the land in accordance with the master plan for the reserve. Cardinia Shire Council’s Manager Governance Doug Evans said that the location of the path was agreed to by representatives of the Emerald Village Committee. Trees are yet to be replanted at Emerald’s Worrell Reserve. The Monterey cypress trees were removed late last year, causing controversy in the town.
Relief on way A $10,000 support grant has been awarded to an emergency relief organisation which services residents in the Maroondah, Knox and Yarra Ranges region. Hope City Mission is a charity which helps about 130 struggling individuals and families by providing food, clothing and toiletries. According to the End Hunger Report released by Foodbank Victoria last year, more than 11,000 Victorians are being turned away from emergency food relief providers each month due to a lack of food availability. Those numbers are rising as more than two thirds of local charities are experiencing an increasing demand for food assistance. Hope City Mission will use this grant to replenish its food stock as well as bolster its financial counselling and advocacy services as a means of early intervention. Bank of Melbourne chief executive Scott Tanner said he was delighted to contribute to the important work of groups such as Hope City Mission. “Selfless Victorians are making a difference in their communities in our state every day,” Mr Tanner said. The charity is one of four community groups to share in almost $50,000 in the allocated grant from the Bank of Melbourne Neighbourhood Fund. Other recipients include a child counselling organisation, a group that brightens the lives of the elderly and another which helps support children and families living with a parent with a mental illness. The Bank of Melbourne Neighbourhood Fund has distributed more than $100,000 this year. Funding is allocated to small projects or organisations that help improve the lives of Victorian communities.

MOST fatal house fires could be avoided. With the cooler months ahead and the onset of winter, Upwey fire brigade wants to remind residents of a few simple things they can do to help protect their families from the dangers of fire. These simple tips include taking time to check hotspots, making sure homes have a working smoke alarm and preparing a home fire escape plan. These can give residents a chance of avoiding a devastating fire at home or surviving one if it does break out. Upwey brigade Captain Paul Mather said that most fires started in the kitchen, whether from unattended cooking or by letting grease and fat build up on stoves and grills. He said it was also important that residents kept tea towels and curtains away from appliances when cooking. “Each year brigades are responded to house fires as a direct result of poor maintenance where residents have not been vigilant and ignored the need to service heaters or get their chimney flues cleaned,” he said. “All of these can be avoided with some simple checks and regular servicing.” Lint filters in clothes dryers need to be cleaned regularly and dryers should always be left to complete their cool

situation that often causes house fires. Never smoke in bed and ensure cigarette ash and butts are fully extinguished. Ensure coals from fires are emptied into a steel bucket or similar and that the coals are fully extinguished before disposing of. By law every home must have at least one working smoke alarm installed on each level of the house. Clean and check alarms regularly and make sure they are in full working order. Each home should have a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket - know how to use them. All families should prepare a home fire escape plan and
practise it regularly. This identifies all the exits in the home and the designated location where family members will meet once they are safely outside. Any visitors or people that stay in the home should be aware of the fire escape plan. They should be shown the exits and where the telephone and emergency numbers are located. “Conducting fire drills regularly with the whole household is a great way to identify the quickest and safest way to get out of the house from every room, including upper floors,” Capt Mather said. More information can be found by visiting www.cfa.vic. gov.au/plan-prepare/ or by calling into a fire station.

POLICE are appealing for public assistance to help locate a missing woman and missing man, both foreign nationals. The woman contacted a relative on Tuesday stating that their car was stuck and that they were near a river somewhere, but couldn’t be very precise. The relative believes the two are somewhere in the Olinda State Forest because they have a friend in the area. A search of the area has been conducted but Yidi Fei and Tianhao Jiang are yet to be found. They have a mobile phone with them but police are having difficulty contacting it. Yidi is 58-years-old and she is perceived as being Asian in appearance. Tianhao is 25-years-old and he is also perceived as being Asian in appearance. Police have no description of what either person may be wearing.
Fake gun charge laid A MAN has been charged after a road rage incident when he produced an imitation firearm. Lilydale CIU Detective Senior Constable Mark Smithwick said the incident happened along the Warburton Highway in Wandin and police believed the driver was on his way home from the York on Lilydale. “After a police search an offender from Millgrove was charged,” he said. “We found an imitation handgun.”

“We are actively targeting graffiti vandalism around the shire and we are making progress, with more programs on the way. “We need to deal with the problem of graffiti vandalism before it becomes worse,” she said. “We are committed to prosecuting those who tag but we can’t do it alone. “The community also need to take a proactive role in reporting graffiti to police and removing graffiti from their own property using the council’s free removal kits.” Councillor Kate Lempriere said that both the council and police were working to stop graffiti in Cockatoo. She said earlier this year police apprehended suspected graffiti tag-

POLICE are investigating a number of graffiti attacks in Cockatoo. Buildings in the town, including the men’s shed, community complex and childcare centre, have been targeted more than once. Leading Senior Constable Andrew McCreedy said police were hoping for assistance from the community in catching those responsible. Cardinia Shire Council will start a shire-wide graffiti clean-up this week. The annual project shows the council’s commitment to reducing graffiti. A recent graffiti audit found 3500 square metres of graffiti on council
assets, private property, business and organisations around the shire. Most graffiti was located in Pakenham and the growth corridor along the railway line, although some smaller townships also have graffiti vandalism. The clean-up will start this week and continue through June and July. All affected property owners and businesses have been notified of the one-off graffiti removal. The audit and clean-up is expected to cost approximately $100,000 and will be funded by the council. Central Ward councillor and Cardinia Shire Graffiti Reference Group chairwoman Jodie Owen said the council was taking a tough stand on graffiti.

Ice avalanche swamping Yarra Ranges From page 1 “Seventy per cent of these happened in the Yarra Ranges and we found that they were swapping computers for ice.” While police are at the forefront, Supt Arthur said the community needed to work together in the fight against the ice epidemic. “I don’t think the community understands how big the problem is,” he said. “They are told every day about the road toll – but might not understand the effect of ice on the community.” He said most people would know
someone who uses ice or was affected somehow. “We are not experts in getting people off drugs and relevant support services are under alot of pressure which makes it difficult to address the issues,” he said. “Education needs to start at an early age.” He said the drug can turn the most calm law abiding citizen into a psychotic rage. And police know that even if they charge someone, if they are granted bail, often they will reoffend due to their addiction issues. Addressing addiction will have
an enormous impact on addressing associated crime, helping offenders turn their life around is the key. “We recently charged a 34-yearold drug addict who has a 10-year history breaking the law,” he said. “He had 381 prior convictions and has been in and out of custody throughout his adult life Offenders like him need to break the cycle.” In the past, the road toll was a major problem in the Yarra Ranges, but the good work of local police and the Highway Patrol has meant that there has been a massive reduction in serious collisions in the area. The hardest thing for Supt Arthur
is to ensure that police focus on the ice problem but to also make sure other areas of policing don’t slip. “We’ve got the Croydon Divisional Tasking Unit focused on clandestine labs and frontline police working on it, too,” he said. “The introduction of PSOs has also been a great help as we’re finding a number of people travelling into our area from outside using the public transport network.” Supt Arthur said while police processed a large number of ice traffickers, the availability is so high due to the ease of manufacturing the drug that the void is filled quickly with others.

About your core stability CORE stability is one of those fitness buzz phrases that appears to mean different things to different people. When I studied physiotherapy in the 1990s, it was simply referred to as ‘stability’ and we were trained to isolate the ‘stabilising’ muscles of the lower back and pelvis to assist people with lower back pain, chronic lower back spinal issues and pelvic floor weakness. Since then, however, it has emerged as an oft-overused term for a seemingly fix-all for every problem. Don’t get me wrong, good ‘core stability’ is probably the most useful emergence in the prevention and rehabilitation of back pain and pelvic or lower limb overuse injuries in the past

20 years but the actual teaching of how to strengthen the ‘core’ usually leaves a lot to be desired. So what is ‘core stability’ exactly and why do so many fitness and health people put so much emphasis on it? (Beware: this gets a bit technical). Let’s start with the ‘core’ itself. The core is like a three dimensional
box in our abdomens. The four walls are formed by our deep abdominal and deep spinal muscles, the floor is formed by our pelvic floor and deep pelvic muscles, and the roof is formed by our diaphragm (which sits just below the sternum and assists with breathing). The function of the ‘core’ is to provide co-contraction and endurance of these postural muscles, rather than strength i.e. they need to work for long periods of time at a very low level in conjunction with arm and leg movements and also be strong enough to react to quick forceful movements that require a sudden spike in muscle activity or control. OK great – now let’s start strengthening the core.

Lantern radio TUNE into local radio 3MDR 97.1fm
Step 1: First make sure that you can contract these deep muscles well – that is, can you actually isolate a contraction of your deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles? Most people with lower back pain or instability have trouble doing this and require one-to-one guidance on how to achieve this. The amount of clients, women and men, who have been doing high level core exercises at home or in the gym (sit-ups or crunches are a high level core activity) but cannot do this is remarkable. With these clients, physiotherapists will often use real time ultrasound to see the muscles in action as a person is learning to activate the muscles – similar to how you see a foetus on a maternal ultrasound screen we can see the
muscles contracting and activating and the person quickly gains better control just with this visual cue. Step 2: Now you can activate the right muscle, it’s time to put them into larger activities. The muscles need to work through a greater range of movement and in conjunction with arm, leg and torso movements. Step 3: Lastly, we can use the ‘core’ with functional or day-to-day, activities, strengthening work and higher level exercises. Clinical Pilates by physiotherapists and other health professionals uses this basic method to be able to help strengthen core muscles of people who are prone to or recovering from injuries to the spine, pelvis, shoulder and lower limbs (eg sporting overuse injuries).

Solid as a rock By BRIDGET SCOTT ANOTHER piece of history was added to Gembrook last month with the official unveiling of a number of sculptures. Camaraderie, designed by Mount Burnett-based artist Viktor Kalinowski, was unveiled by Cardinia Shire mayor Graeme Moore on the corner of Main Street and Gembrook Road. Cr Moore said the artwork was a fantastic addition to Gembrook and stood for great things. “Camaraderie is about people gathering together in friendship and trust - a true reflection of the Gembrook community, he said. “Residents attended community sessions to speak about living in Gembrook, and it became clear that
this township was built as a result of the strength of its community members and they would also create its future. This is what inspired the artist to create Camaraderie. These sculptures were the latest addition to a growing art collection in the Cardinia Shire and represented individuals standing strongly together to form a community. This community-involved project involved an extensive look into the history of Gembrook, and Mr Kalinowski said he chose granite to represent Gembrook’s history of working on the land, durability and natural beauty. The artwork, one of four public art projects throughout the Cardinia Shire, is funded by council through the capital works program.

Upper Ferntree Gully CFA Captain Peter Smith said crews were called at 11pm on Monday night and arrived to see the office building alight. “The cause of the blaze is still being investigated, he said. “It was in a shocking spot up the back of the property and near a brick wall, so we needed to stop the fire from spreading to other buildings. Crews from Upper Ferntree Gully, Ferntree Gully and Upwey attended. –Melissa Meehan
New pool plan THE FIGHT to save the Olinda Pool is not over. More than 30 people attended a community workshop last week to discuss what the next plan of attack was. Organised by Narelle Everard and Janine McClelland, the workshop aimed at answering questions in relation to the pool in terms of value to the community, what would make it better and what can be done to get it re-opened. “The atmosphere was very positive, very harmonious and we were encouraged by the energy, Ms Everard said.
“There were a lot of really good thoughts, ideas and suggestions. We agreed to look at all of the answers and identify the ones we felt strongest about. The group found that the pool wasn’t only a place to cool down on hot days, but a meeting place and community hub that kids could meet and hang out at. They also found that it was suitable for young and old, and a valuable resource for the CFA. When asked what would make the pool better, the group decided that the introduction of solar heating, opening on total fire ban days and adding barbe-
cue areas were all great ideas. The next meeting will be held at 8pm on Tuesday 22 July at the meeting room at the rear of the Olinda CFA (to be confirmed). At this meeting, there will be a progress report from each action group and the next phase of the campaign will be decided. The Yarra Ranges Council is yet to make a decision on the future of the pool. If you would like to join any of these groups or if you think an important issue has been overlooked and would like to start another group, contact Narelle Everard on 9751 1901 or 0448 747 858.

Royal salute to drivers
Pipeline survey
By JESSE GRAHAM DRINK drivers were in the crosshairs as part of the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol’s Operation Regal, but police said drivers were well behaved over the long weekend. Operation Regal ran from Friday 6 to Monday 9 June, with police targeting dangerous drivers as thousands drove through the Yarra Valley. Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable (LSC) Graeme Rust said that 357 offences were recorded in the Yarra Ranges Police Service Area (PSA) - which ranked the area second across the state for offences. Of those offences, 17 people were charged with drink driving - the highest result across the state. Leading Sen Const Rust said the results were representative of the commitment police in the Yarra Ranges had towards keeping the roads safe. “The personnel in the Yarra Ranges did an outstanding job to reduce the number of collisions and drunk drivers on the road,” he said. “But it also shows that there were 17 people out there silly enough to try and beat the odds,” he said. One of the standout incidents from the weekend included a ute driver who was intercepted in Coldstream on Saturday 7 June. The driver, a 19-year-old Fitzroy man, had two other passengers in the two-seater vehicle, his rear P-plate not
SELBY residents have been given extra time to reply to Yarra Valley Water in relation to sewerage works in their area. The consultation period will be extended to Friday 20 June. The survey asks residents whether they support the provision of a reticulated sewer system to the area instead of using a septic tank system. General Manager Sustainable Development Sam Austin said customers were encouraged to return the survey and put forward their views on whether they would like to be part of the sewerage backlog program. displayed, two bald back tyres and police detected alcohol in his system with a preliminary breath test. However, the driver refused to accompany police officers back to the station for a followup test. “He’s obviously indicated the presence of alcohol in his breath for us to make a request to accompany police,” Leading Sen Const Rust said. “(But) he flat-out refused more than once,”he said. Leading Sen Const Rust said the driver would appear at the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court charged with refusing to accompany police for a breath test, driving without a rear Pplate, using an un-roadworthy
vehicle and carrying a passenger occupying the same seating position as another. Refusing to accompany police for a breath test carries fines of up to $2000, loss of licence for up to two years and up to 18 months imprisonment, Leading Sen Const Rust said despite the incredible numbers heading into - and out of- town over the long weekend, drivers were mostly well-behaved. For drivers on public holidays and long weekends, his advice was simple: “Patience is a pre-requisite - basically, you must obey the road laws” he said. “If you cover your bases and plan your trip well ahead, you will usually have a good time.”

Warby all the way YVMDFNL Wrap: Round 9 Division 1 A Grade Netball Warburton Millgrove 43 d Emerald 30 EMERALD started this game well enough and led Warby by two goals at quarter time. But Warby got on top in the second term with good ball movement scoring 14 goals-to-seven to go to half time with a five-goal buffer. The third term while not high scoring still belonged to Warby as they scored 10 goals while holding Emerald to just four. Warby finished the day outscoring Emerald by two goals in the last to run out 13-goal winners in a reasonably solid performance. Warburton Millgrove best players: A. Bryan, J. Lord, K. Wappett. Emerald best players: S. Campbell (15 goals), L. Whyte, L. Moses. Mount Evelyn 50 d Woori Yallock 37 THIS game was a really tough contest for the first half as it went goalfor-goal and at half time Mount Evelyn was up by just two goals. The third quarter opened up a bit for Mount Evelyn as they started to find space and more openings to goal; they scored 12 goals-to-six and got out to a handy eight-goal lead at the last change. Mount Evelyn finished the game well, scoring 13 last-quarter goalsto-eight to win by 13 goals in a match where they just had the edge over their opponents when it really mattered. Mount Evelyn best players: J. Walker, E. Beazleigh, G. Kirley. Woori Yallock best players: S. Southwick, C. Stafford, J. Terry. Wandin 59 d Belgrave 42 WANDIN was just that little classier throughout this game never giving Belgrave any real chance to get back into the game after quarter time. Wandin led by six goals at the first break and just slowly increased their lead as the game progressed. Wandin led by nine goals at the last change and then finished the day strong with a 15 goal-to-seven last term to win the game in good style. Wandin best players: S. Coppinger, J. Cullimore (34 goals), C. Baker (24 goals). Belgrave best players: L. Bennett (38 goals), D. Marcus, L. Read. Monbulk Hawks 43 d Healesville 40
THIS was a ripper game with no more than three goals separating the sides at any change. Monbulk held just a two-goal lead at quarter time, but Healesville reversed that trend in the second and by half time had gained a three-goal advantage after a 13 goal-to-eight term. Monbulk defended hard in the third, and it was paying dividends as they ran the ball well from defence creating scoring chances shooting 12 goals-to-six for the term and at the last change they now led by three goals. The last quarter was a goal-forgoal affair, but it was Monbulk that held onto their lead to come out winners in what was a great contest. Monbulk best players: B. Northey, A. Barwick, S. Byatt (14 goals). Healesville best players: L. Woodgate (20 goals), C. Connell, C. Jeffress. Upwey Tecoma 57 d Olinda Ferny Creek 24 UPWEY was never really troubled although Olinda did battle hard early, but it was short lived as Upwey showed their dominance, jumping out to a 15-goal lead by half time. Upwey really put the game to bed in the third, scoring 15 goals-tofour to jump out to a 26-goal lead at the last change. Olinda did show some spirit in the last, scoring eight goals but Upwey still had the upper hand shooting 13 goals to win comfortably in the end. Upwey Tecoma best players: G. Hankinson, K. Tomlinson, M. Kennerley (34 goals). Olinda Ferny Creek best players: D. Portarianos, M. Thomas (12 goals), A. Wall. Division 2 A Grade Netball Seville 51 d Yarra Junction 16 SEVILLE was nothing short of excellent as they really did make short work of a disappointing Yarra Junction. Seville got out to a 16-goal lead by half time and probably weren’t at their absolute best, but it was good enough to grab a very handy lead. Seville really kicked into action in the second half as they dried up Yarra Junction scoring, holding them to just another six goals for the match while they piled on another 25 to win by a very impressive 35 goals. Seville best players: M. Scully, M. Wyatt, Z. Abbruzzese (23 goals).
WEEK 10 of Yarra Ranges Cross Country saw Morrison Reserve at its heaviest with a sometimes wet and slippery course. The 500-metre runners quickly adapted and paved the way for the remaining races. Considering the cold start, the numbers were large and several were keen to post more personal bests. A lot of runners made this week a light run with the region relays being held on Sunday 22 June. Also on their plate is the next round of school zones. The training program run by the Yarra Ranges coaches has seen the club dominate in most age groups so the old saying ‘train well run well’ ringing true. The under six girls and boys were inspiring for the rest of the runners with a big effort from Charlotte Comport, Zoe Clarke, Sinead Knight and James de Schwartz. Next Saturday 21 June there will be no Centre Cross Country due to Region’s on Sunday. The next Yarra Ranges Athletics run is at Lillydale Lake on 28 June. Georgia Murty from Healesville ready to pass off. 122262 Yarra Junction best players: J. Allen, R. Young, J. Wallace. Powelltown 48 d Kinglake 26 KINGLAKE did take it up to Powelltown for a quarter as they led by two goals at the first change. But after that, Powelltown took control with a 14 goal-to-four second term to grab an eight-goal lead going into half time. The second half Powelltown did dominate the play, every time Kinglake would score a goal, Powelltown seemed to answer with two of their own. Powelltown scored 27 second half goals-to-13 to win by a very healthy 22 goals. Powelltown best players: A. Dunford (12 goals), M. Finlay, N. Armstrong (4 goals). Kinglake best players: E. Coen (11 goals), A. Luks (15 goals), S. Redfern. Yarra Glen 34 d Yea 30 YARRA GLEN had to fight off a very plucky Yea side to remain the
only undefeated side in the comp. Yea took it right up to the league leaders early and scores were tied at seven- all at the first change. The next two quarters were a battle, but it was Yarra Glen that had a little more poise when it came to the goals as they got out to a handy six-goal lead by the last change. The last quarter saw Yea throw everything at Yarra Glen to give them a chance, but Yarra Glen did stand tall to hold off Yea who did come back slightly but not enough to cause an upset, with Yarra Glen finally winning by four goals in an entertaining battle. Yarra Glen best players: G. Taylor (22 goals), S. Moate, N. Braden. Yea best players: M. Leatham (6 goals), C. Spagnolo (16 goals), J. Graham Thornton Eildon: bye Alexandra: bye

Clowes bags June medal By DENNIS FULLER SNEAKING in between the rain and showers at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday, the members managed to stay dry while competing for the June monthly medal. It was a little moist ticket underfoot and most managed to blame the weather or the course for their horrid golf. When all the scores were in and were run across the official abacus, it was found that the June medal belonged to Peter Clowes (17) with a great net 67. A Grade saw the win by young tyro, Broc Reynolds (14) when he stayed in control to outlast the others to win with 70. The only other stragglers to score OK were Sepp Krummenacher (22) and Peter Jones (21) who both played to their handicaps for 70. Welcome back to John Fisher who won the Stockdale and Leggo nearest the pin on the fourth and he also picked up the pro pin cash on the 18th. Reynolds was nearest on the seventh, Con Whitlock the 12th and Clowes on the 13th. Gracie White was the star in the ladies’ event when she marched in triumphantly from Rosalie Martin and Stephanie Town. Wednesday’s Overtly Faded Golf (OFG) was a stableford event with a twist. One shot had to be played with the other hand on the par threes. Peter Clowes (15) was not fazed by this when he won with 39 points from Leigh Morison (19) on 36 and Dennis Fuller (13) on 35. Clowes also managed to drain a shot from 130m on the par four, sixth hole for an eagle and bragging rights as an eagle on this hole is practically unheard of. Next Saturday is a stroke event that is also the qualifying round for the club’s match play championship.

Warby on a roll: third win YVMDFNL Wrap: Round 9 First Division Seniors Warburton Millgrove 14.12 (96) d Emerald 10.10 (70) WARBURTON notched up their third win of the season with a hard fought 26-point win over Emerald. Emerald are yet to win a game this year, but they were in with a real shot in this game as they led at quarter time by 13 points on the back of some good team play. Warby clawed their way back in the second term, but still trailed by two points at the main break. The third quarter was where the game broke open as Warburton started to find more space which created more opportunities to score. They booted five goals-to-one to take a four-goal lead into the last quarter. The last term was an even contest, with both sides booting three goals, but it was Warburton’s third quarter that was the catalyst for their victory. Monbulk 21.13 (139) d Healesville 10.8 (68) MONBULK has bounced back to winning form with a terrific fourquarter performance over a Healesville side that was denied any real run. Monbulk started well, booting four goals-to-two in the first term, but realistically could have been further in front with the amount of play they had. The second quarter saw Monbulk stretch their lead as they put on another five majors to Healesville’s two and at the long break, it was Monbulk leading by a very handy 34 points. The second half was more of the same; Healesville certainly weren’t playing bad but Monbulk was just a class above for the entire match. They had multiple scoring options and actually finished the day with three of their players scoring five majors. Monbulk outscored Healesville 12 goals-to-six in the second half to win by a hefty 71 points in a fine performance. UPWEY sit one game clear on top of the ladder after beating a dreadfully inaccurate Olinda by five goals. Upwey was by far the better side when it came to capitalising on its opportunities which top sides do, whereas Olinda just couldn’t seem to get the ball through the big sticks. At half time, Upwey led by 38 points but in fact had two less scoring shots than Olinda with a score line of Upwey: 11.5 (71) to Olinda: 3.15 (33). Wandin 19.20 (134) d Belgrave 6.8 (44) WANDIN found some of their best
form with a massive 90-point win over a Belgrave side that looks devoid of confidence. Wandin shot out to a 26-point lead at the first break, but it was their second quarter that put the game out of Belgrave’s reach. They booted six goals while holding Belgrave to just three points, and at half time Wandin’s lead was a match winning 62 points. Wandin continued their good form in the third, booting five goals but Belgrave did at least show a small amount of fight slotting three majors. The last quarter saw Wandin boot three goals-to-one to finish the day with the sort of victory they have been looking for this season, and maybe the start of something going forward for the rest of the year. Woori Yallock 12.18 (90) d Mount Evelyn 3.10 (28) IN A game that was touted as being one of the matches of the round turned out to be anything but. Woori was dominant from start to finish. They started the day on fire with a seven-goal first term while Mount Evelyn could only manage two behinds. The second term was a bit of a non event with goals hard to come by, with both sides scoring one major but it was Woori up by 45 points at the half and in complete control. The last quarter was a slog in tough conditions with both sides scoring a goal, but this game belonged to Woori Yallock from the first bounce. Division 2 Seniors Gembrook Cockatoo 8.4 (52) d Thornton Eildon 5.10 (40) GEMBROOK came away with a 12-point victory, thanks to a good first half. They started the day well with a five goal-to-one quarter to take a 22-point lead into quarter time. Gembrook may have only scored one goal in the second quarter but they held Thornton scoreless and at half time their lead was 29 points. The last quarter was a torrid affair in pretty tough conditions. Thornton battled hard but Gembrook had the answers, with both sides finishing the quarter with two majors but it was Gembrook that walked off with the points. Seville 6.14 (50) d Yarra Junction 3.8 (26) Under 18s Emerald 13.13 (91) d Warburton Millgrove 6.1 (37) EMERALD were hot favourites to win this game which they eventually did, but not before Warby took it right up to them in the first half.
Warby actually held a seven-point lead at half time after some really encouraging play and making the most of their opportunities while Emerald was a little sloppy around goals. The second half saw Emerald kick into gear as they started sharing the ball around a lot more and playing a more team-orientated brand of football. Emerald booted 10 second half goals to just one to finish the day with a sizeable win. Emerald best players: J. Breakwell (3 goals), N. Triandafillou, J. Vallas (1 goal). Warburton Millgrove best players: D. Bedggood, J. Ward, T. Jones (1 goal). Healesville 13.15 (93) d Monbulk 4.3 (27) EVEN though Healesville wasn’t at their brilliant best, they were still damn good with a big win over Monbulk. Healesville denied Monbulk any score in the second and third quarter which was a sensational effort as a defensive unit. By three quarter time, Healesville led by 64 points and it was just a matter of how far they could stretch that lead in the last. To Monbulk’s credit, they did fight out the last quarter with both sides scoring two goals, but it was simply Healesville that was just far too good on the day. Healesville best players: J. Savage (4 goals), B. Coon, J. McLeod (4 goals). Monbulk best players: T. Pauw, T. Gromer, A. Skordilis (1 goal). Belgrave 28.13 (181) d Powelltown 1.1 (7) BELGRAVE scored a huge win over a depleted Powelltown in a game that was over by quarter time. Belgrave booted 10 first quarter goals to just one in an excellent display and backed that up with another nine in the second and third quarters while Powelltown didn’t score. At the last break Belgrave held a 170-point lead. The last quarter was really a non event with Powelly defending hard with numbers down back to deny Belgrave scoring, the plan did work as Belgrave only booted four behinds for the term but unfortunately for Powelltown, they didn’t score at all. Belgrave best players: J. Bartils (3 goals), L. Murphy (7 goals), M. Donald (2 goals). Powelltown best players: B. Nightingale, M. Mallick (1 goal), T. Nightingale.
