(M)
COMMENCING 26TH JUNE Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor,
The ilm is the fourth installment the Transformers sci-i/action ilm series. A sequel to Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the ilm takes place four years after an epic battle leaves Chicago torn, but the world has been saved. Autobots and Decepticons are no longer wanted on Earth by humans and have gone into hiding. As humanity picks up the pieces, automobile mechanic Cade Yeager (Wahlberg) and his daughter Tessa (Peltz) come across Optimus Prime. However, once a bounty hunter learns that the leader of the Autobots is still on earth, he begins tracking him down
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (CTC) COMMENCING JULY 9TH Starring: Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Andy Serkis
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.
Jersey Boys (CTC) COMMENCING JULY 3RD Starring: John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Michael Lomenda
Jersey Boys is a musical biography of the Four Seasons-the rise, the tough times and personal clashes, and the ultimate triumph of a group of friends whose music became symbolic of a generation. Far from a mere tribute concert (though it does include numbers from the popular Four Seasons songbook), Jersey Boys gets to the heart of the relationships at the center of the group-with a special focus on frontman Frankie Valli, the small kid with the big falsetto.

Just so cruel By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE memorial site of Emily (10) and Brooke (7) Salske who died in a tragic car accident on Baranduda Boulevard in January has been desecrated. The first attack, on Mother’s Day, included a laminated note (pictured) and the memorial was simply ‘packed up,’ but Thursday evening’s attack left the site covered in rubbish with ornaments destroyed and crosses moved to the cemetery. “I received a message on Friday morning saying someone passed the tree and the crosses were gone,” a friend of Debbie Andrew (the girls’ mother), Melinda Wilson said. “Everything had been pulled off the branches, everything hanging was destroyed. “Upon my arrival there was a note nailed to the tree which stated “since you dumped your rubbish here, you won’t mind if we do the same. Cheers, your friendly C.F.E.R.” CFER stands for Citizens For Equal Rights. “They had dumped rubbish in about four bags around the tree, everything was left in a big mess,” Ms Wilson said. “It was luck that myself, a friend and Jenny - Debbie’s sister - were coming past the cemetery on Melrose Drive and Jenny happened to look out her window and saw Emily and Brooke’s cross along with Matt Bownds’ cross.” Matthew Bownds died in a motorcycle accident on the same stretch of road last year. Ms Wilson said the family was unaware of the first note, left three weeks prior to the second attack, which described what they would do if the “ugly, BOGAN roadsidemess” wasn’t “cleaned up.” “On Saturday we learnt that a Baranduda resident had found the note and decided it was a prank and the family didn’t need to know about it,” she said. Ms Andrew and Ms Wilson have called for community help in finding the people responsible, having already contacted Wodonga Council and Wodonga Police. Continued page 4

THE Albury Base Hospital Auxiliary has welcomed the arrival of new equipment thanks to ongoing donations from long-standing supporter Sam Wealth and his team at The Good Guys Albury. The Phillips VM6 Monitor came at a cost of $4,732 and will work to increase patient safety after surgery by monitoring the patient’s respiratory rate and other vital signs using visual and auditory alarms to alert caregivers of changes in patient status. Albury Base Hospital Auxiliary’s Gareth Jones is delighted with the support from the retailer, saying it’s a great example of a local business getting behind the needs of the community. “New equipment like this is vital to the development and maintenance of our hospital services,” he said. “It provides our community with better access to technologies but more importantly gives people extra support when they need it the most, and that is a good thing.” Albury Base unit manager Jenny Furness said Surgical Ward One was very grateful to The Good Guys, who had been assisting for the past seven years. “It means the patients can have a 24-hour period post-operative of being absolutely or close to pain-free, she said. “It allows us to have continuous patient monitoring. It’s much safer for the patients, we’re adhering to recommended best practice and policy which is also a great patient outcome.” Since 2010, The Good Guys have been donating a percentage of every transaction in store and online back to their local community partners, including donations to the Albury Base Hospital, providing continued support and equipment such as a bariatric bed and theatre apparatus. Proprietor of The Good Guys Albury, Sam Wealth, believes that the equipment donation

Wodonga City Council said the town was delighted to find out they would be hosting the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour this year as it provided the opportunity for Wodonga and surrounding communities to celebrate a proud icon of Australian history while drawing attention to local landmarks, including the Murray River. The $175,000, 18-carat gold Emirates Melbourne Cup will commence its three and a half month tour in July accompanied by Melbourne Cup veterans and racing legends who will share their personal stories with locals throughout the tour. Light in the long night By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE longest night of the year was marked for the second year in a row by the Border’s annual Winter Solstice for Survivors of Suicide. The event, which was held on Saturday night, is aimed at shedding light on the subject of suicide in a bid to both prevent further deaths as well as allow family and friends left behind to speak more freely on the topic as part of their own healing. “A lot of people don’t actually know what a winter solstice actually is,” organiser Annette Baker said. “It draws a parallel to grief and it’s important to keep the event on that date. “It’s about coming from darkness into light and for people who find the darkness in weather quite hard, it brings them the hope that the days will get longer. “It’s challenging to hear that word suicide but I think the combination of music and dance between each speaker and the six fire pits lightens that mood that could be sombre. “It was quite beautiful, really.” Ms Baker lost her daughter to suicide in 2011. She and her husband Stuart were the first of a number of people to speak out publicly about their experience with the stigma and silence surrounding suicide and the lack of suicide specific post-care in the area. “We felt most people in our lives found it difficult, we were treated differently,” she said. “We often felt the need to talk about suicide and we felt whenever we were in the presence of friends or family we were completely ignored. “We had also experienced significant deaths within our family and the

Rupert Baker and Sarah Hadley light a candle in remembrance. post-death of these other people was not like that at all. We fast worked out it was about suicide itself. “There is a big fear that talking about it brings other suicides. I feel it is the older generation that have the fear, I don’t think young people do. “Pushing it under the carpet and pretending it hasn’t happened is insulting.
“It’s devastating to know that’s what people would prefer to do rather than acknowledge your loved one has suicided. “For me, I thought about this six months after our Mary died. I thought I would love to have someone organise an evening or an event for people affected by suicide to provide an evening of solidarity, but also to educate.” Ms Baker’s experience is quite typical for family members who have suffered the grief that death by suicide brings and the subsequent lack of support. “My sister actually came from Mel-
bourne for the evening and she brought a woman whose daughter suicided 20odd years ago,” she said. “My sister told me this woman’s family said to her ‘why are you going to that?’ And she said ‘because I have to, I need to’. “They had never allowed her to speak about her daughter’s death. She carried that load without any support whatsoever and got herself out of bed every morning which, I think, is amazing.” While the Winter Solstice for Survivors of Suicide’s primary purpose is not to fund-raise, there is still much to
be done, which will require money. “Some people referred to the event as a fund-raiser, and money is always helpful when doing an event like this, but it’s really a support and awareness for our community and people affected by suicide,” Ms Baker said. “There is nothing in suicide specific counselling locally. “There’s Lifeline and all these other support networks but there’s actually nothing specific to suicide. “It’s a very different death. If you are affected you’re needing a different type of support.”

Inheritance battles leave “boomer” families shattered, pockets empty The sale of an inherited family home is the leading cause of mid-life sibling rivalry between Albury-Wodonga Baby Boomers. Dean Lupson reports. Albury Wodonga Property Agent Dean Lupson says “even minor disputes between siblings and relatives can chew up tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal costs. The result is normally a broken family and MUCH less of the sale proceeds going to the intended beneciaries. It’s no way to honour a loved one’s memory” says Dean.

“I remember one recent case where an elder brother of two sisters took control over the sale of their deceased parent’s home and a neighbouring block of land, and refused a combined offer that ended up costing his two sisters $45,000. Sadly, those siblings are no longer on speaking terms Too often brothers and sisters go to war citing reasons of greed, dishonesty or incompetence that and the once happy family is all costs others over the sale of a parent’s home. but broken.” Albury Solicitor, Mike Eden adds that this type of situation can be easily avoided simply by getting an independent valuation before seeking the services of an experienced Property Agent. He stresses the importance of hiring a Property Agent who can offer a strong process in dealing with these kinds of cases where there’s a chance a family could come to loggerheads over any number of issues related to the sale of a loved one’s property. “For many siblings it seems like a pretty straightforward thing to manage, but the cost of something going wrong (causing a family breakup) is too heavy a price to pay” he says… For the rest of this article, please phone Dean Lupson on 0260 215590 or 0458 527 632 or email: dean@borderconnect.com.au 1140695-CB25-14

It’s just so cruel
Re-opening the grandstand.
Facelift for grandstand IT IS one of the oldest grandstands in Victoria and now it’s been given a new lease of life thanks to a $50,000 facelift. A $25,900 Victorian Government grant, a hard-working volunteer committee and Indigo Shire all contributed towards the overhaul of the 147-year-old historic Chiltern Recreation Reserve grandstand - officially re-opened last week. The Chiltern Park Recreation Reserve Committee of Management was recognised at the recent Indigo Heritage Awards 2014 with the Restoration of a Heritage Place Award. Committee member Joy Lee said it had been a big task to save the grandstand from falling down. “The grandstand was in bad shape when we set out to restore it,” Ms Lee said. “However, with the help of the Victorian Government, Indigo Shire Council, community fund-
raising and in-kind support we have achieved what we set out to do. “Special thanks must go to heritage builder Daryl McCormack for his contribution to the project. “We now want to get the grandstand added to the Victorian Heritage Register.” State Member for Benambra, Bill Tilley performed the official reopening last week. “The Chiltern grandstand is one of the oldest surviving grandstands of its kind in Victoria,” Bill Tilley said. “It was built adjacent to the former racecourse in 1879 on a mullock heap; linking in with the town’s early mining roots. “This collaborative project demonstrates how the Victorian Government is working with the community to deliver important local projects. “The Victorian Government’s
grant was for the first stage of the project and was used to ensure the structure was kept standing and safe. “This included replacing support posts, bracing of the structure, positioning ground support, termite treatment and the removal of elm roots impacting the structure. “I would like to congratulate the volunteer committee of management for all their hard work in restoring the grandstand. “Recreation reserves are the lifeblood of small communities such as Chiltern with long-standing traditions in country racing, football, netball and cricket. “We work with partners and local communities to deliver outcomes for Victoria, through a state-wide approach to public land that creates opportunities for the community to flourish.” Funds for the project were received through the Department of
Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) Public Safety on Public Land initiative. “However, with the help of the Victorian Government, Indigo Shire Council, community fundraising and in-kind support we have achieved what we set out to do. “Special thanks must go to heritage builder Daryl McCormack for his contribution to the project. “We now want to get the grandstand added to the Victorian Heritage Register.”
From page 1 “Debbie decided she needs the community help to try and find the person to understand why they’re doing what they’re doing,” Ms Wilson said. “We do know there have been complaints made to council. There’s two complaints but they’re pretty sure it’s made by the same person. The council won’t release a name and the reasons given by the person is they find it distracting and a bit of an eyesore. They don’t understand why it’s as big as what it is.” Ms Wilson said the memorial was not an eyesore and was regularly tidied up by many Baranduda residents who passed it. Wodonga council community relations manager Sue Beattie released a statement to NewsWeekly regarding the situation: “The council does not have an existing policy on roadside memorials but is in the process of developing one ... We have had some feedback from concerned citizens about memorials in public places but this has been minimal ... We are compassionate to and respect the large outpouring of grief and are working with the families on possible options for appropriate, long-term memorials that meet their needs and the needs of the community.” Ms Wilson said the heinous damage would hurt the children of Baranduda the most. “Ninety per cent of what’s left at the tree is left by kids,” she said. “There isn’t a day that goes by that you don’t see someone at the tree. “For myself and my kids I look at it as a place where they remember. It’s something bright and colourful that when we’re passing they smile and start talking about the girls. They love that they can go there and leave things for them on their birthdays or just go down there and say hello. “Taking them to a cemetery just doesn’t have that feel. It’s more the kids that have labelled the tree Emily and Brooke’s Tree. “As an adult we look at it and think it’s an awful tree, it’s taken two beautiful kids but for children it’s become a symbol of Emily and Brooke.” Ms Andrew and Ms Wilson have vowed to restore the memorial, which is already underway. “We’re going to keep encouraging people to use it if they need to,” she said. “The crosses and everything we’ve salvaged will be going back.”

Social Seen Alpacas pack out bookstore By KRYSTEN MANUEL CHALK and Chat welcomed some unlikely woolly guests to the David Street shop last Saturday for the book launch of A is for Alpacas. Flash and Magnum were front and centre at the launch, receiving pats from over 60 eager parents and children. “It was fantastic,” Chalk and
Chat owner Judy Redman said. “A is for Alpacas author Sue Carolane has been a speech pathologist for 31 years and has a passion for children learning their letter sounds so they can read with confidence. “She happens to have an alpaca farm so she featured the alpacas in the book. There’s some amusing recounts of things alpacas do in there
- very appealing for little children.” Children and parents were treated to drinks and nibbles throughout the event, with many discovering Chalk and Chat’s extensive educational range of books, games and toys for children and their teachers for the first time. “It was a great chance for people to really see what we offer,” Ms Redman said.

Tas Davies of Albury Autogas has a special message for Border service stations. togas used to do a conversion per week a few years ago, but over the past six months it has done only two. “The LPG fuel for the vehicles industry is in the doldrums, he said. “This has come about due to the higher price driven by excise increases, export parity pricing and fat margins by fuel retailers, particularly in regional areas. “With the end of the rebate finishing this month, I am really concerned for my business, my employees and the industry. “LPG is a great fuel for vehicles. LOCAL business owner Tas Davies of Albury Autogas is outraged at the price Border motorists are paying for LPG, calling for retail service stations to lower their prices for LPG immediately. “We are being gouged at the LPG pump! he said. “The difference in LPG pricing between AlburyWodonga and Melbourne used to be a few cents. It is now 1517c per litre. “This has a big effect in regions for long distance commuters who rack up the big kilometres. “The cheapest LPG price for LPG from a retail service station is 84.9c/litre in Albury Wodonga. The cheapest in Melbourne is 68.0c/litre at BP Rowville. “This means that we are paying 25 per cent more for LPG! “The price difference between Border and metro used to be a few cents. Prices went up steeply over the summer period due to international wholesale prices. “This often occurs due to demand from Europe for propane and butane for heating. “However, once the wholesale prices eased, most of this has been kept by service station retailers on the Border. The high LPG price means less conversions are being carried out which has a profound effect on the viability of LPG as a motor vehicle fuel. TIMOR-LESTE will be up for discussion at an event hosted by the Beechworth RSL on 26 June. Major-General Roger Powell AM (Retd) will headline a panel of three guest speakers discussing the Australian military connection with the young. Major-General Powell’s final appointment before retiring was as senior Australian military officer seconded to the United Nations peace keeping force in East Timor in 2001. He will be joined by Beechworth historian Richard Patterson who will cover the history of Timor-Leste before and after World War II; Corporal L, a serving soldier from 2nd Commando Company, 1st Commando Regiment with heritage links to the 2/2nd and 2/4th Independent Companies which established the Timor-Australian relationship in 1942-3; and Beechworth RSL president Craig Duff, who served with the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET) in 1999-2000. The event is one of a series of lead-in events for the Kerferd Oration on 27 July which will explore the Indigo community’s ongoing relationship with Timor-Leste. Mr Duff said the free event would provide an insight into Australia’s historic and military involvement with Timor-Leste. “Major-General Roger Powell brings more than 30 years of military experience to the panel, Mr Duff said. “He served for 34 years as a commissioned officer in the Australian Army including his final appointment in East Timor in 2001. “He began his career as an armoured corps officer, steadily rising through the ranks, responsible for a range of duties from manpower planning to military and educational training. “In 1998 he was selected to command the multi-national Peace Monitoring Group in Bougainville PNG. “He was promoted to Major General on 1999 before taking on the role in East Timor, Mr Duff said. Mr Powell is a graduate of the Australian Command and Staff College. He holds a bachelor of arts (history) from the

Prices in Melbourne would reflect here in many more conversions. “It is important that pricing remains competitive for regional areas or the LPG fuel industry will become marginal at best. “It is already becoming marginal as the fleet of LPG vehicles declines. “This will also ultimately effect service stations with LPG infrastructure.

New wheels for PCYC THE PCYC Albury has a brand-new bus – well, a brand-new old bus - thanks to a little help from their friends. The bus was donated last week thanks to the Back to Reality Foundation, Combined Rotary Clubs of Albury, The Commercial Club and Jacob’s Toyota. Rotary club spokesman Peter Frauenfelder said the bus replaced the club’s Toyota Tarago which was “on it’s last legs”. He said the new bus would be used to help the two youth liaison police officers involved in the club to transport teens to events and appointments, as well as any of the other transportation needs of the club. Peter said it was a need that the groups saw in the community. He said Rotary had originally raised the money for a bus for a now defunct rehabilitation centre and was only too pleased to now see a bus in place and being used to help the community.

Letters Take care with care A RECENT article in News Weekly promoted Advanced Care Directives as a way to give the terminally ill control over their medical treatment. But reports have emerged of patients’ welfare being undermined because they signed an ACD. In one case I know of, a woman visited her father who was dying of cancer in hospital, and found him in a coma caused by a severe case of pneumonia. Staff had withheld antibiotics because his ACD said that if he suffered heart failure he didn’t wish to be revived. It is too much to expect of over-worked medicos that they should have to interpret these documents. And their interpretation of the patient’s wishes has been upheld by hospital authorities even when it is obviously wrong – to the distress of family and friends. Until the law relating to Advanced Care Directives is changed, I would urge anyone considering signing one to think again, Louise McManus, Albury.

The Bridge to happiness By KRYSTEN MANUEL WE all know the iconic Bridge Hotel Jingellic is the place to be in summer - wedged between the hills next to the rushing Murray, it’s the perfect spot for a couple of cold ones. But if you think that’s the best the Bridge has to offer, think again. Winter is here and what better place to be than by a crackling fire, nestled among the agrestic charm and friendly faces of the Bridge. “There’s nothing better than sitting in the front bar with the fire roaring and just a few locals in there to chat to with some footy going on in the background - it’s enchanting as soon as you walk in,” owner Ian Clarke said. “If I had a dollar for every time I’m told this pub is beautiful, I wouldn’t have to open three days a week!” Built in 1925, the building has gone through some major renovations, but still holds tightly onto its rustic charms. Upon entering for the first time, patrons are always fascinated with the old money stuck to the ceiling, dating back many decades. In 2012, Ian took on the quaint little pub and still can’t speak highly enough of his investment. “It’s a unique pub,” he said. “The joint’s just like a trapdoor, people just walk into it and love it. “They’re endeared by it, with its leadlight windows, glass top bars, money stuck to the ceiling...
“And it’s the location. You’re in the middle of the upper Murray, so you’ve got the undulating land and the hills and trees, and the Bridge Hotel sits smack on top of the Murray River, you can see the river clear as a bell from the back door.” Ian also can’t speak highly enough of his chef, Chris Dedering, who continues to uphold the pub’s solid reputation for high quality, hearty meals. “This guy is good!” Ian said. “He’s a self-taught bloke from Sydney - he’s a story on his own. He was a young man who lacked a bit of confidence, we gave him a run and helped him along and now he’s just awesome. “He’s forever putting new things on the menu. At the moment we have things like a mixed grill, lamb shank that just falls off the bone, and camenchicken roulade - he flattens a chicken breast out, stuffs it with spinach, Camembert cheese and bacon. “He’s increased the pasta range considerably and you’ll always find a

He has minestrone and a chicken and corn going at the moment, he’s run pumpkin, lamb shank and veg, pea and ham, potato and leek, cauliflower and carrot, tomato and meatball, and bacon and leek. “It’s the range, the quality and the size people love - they get fed!
“They’re not paying a fortune for it but they’re getting a great feed in a great environment.” The Bridge Hotel also has accommodation for the less ‘campy’ type, with one fully self-contained threebedroom house - two bedrooms with queen beds, one bedroom with two singles, reverse-cycle air-conditioner,

Breaking borders By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE tracing service of the Australian Red Cross will hold a public forum in Albury tomorrow in a bid to assist local family members who have been separated by war, conflict, disaster or migration. In Australia the tracing service, part of the International Red Cross Red Crescent global network operating in more than 180 countries, has assisted people to locate missing family all over the world, from Afghanistan and Sri Lanka to Kenya and Croatia. “The tracing service, the only one of its kind in the world, works across international borders and for many is their last hope of ever finding their missing sisters, fathers and sons,” Australian RedCross Tracing Service team leader Miriam Bugden said. “Not knowing the fate of your loved ones can be debilitating and isolating. “We’ve helped families separated during World War II, who haven’t had news of their loved ones for more than 50 years, and we’ve also worked with people separated by almost every conflict in recent history, from Afghanistan to Bosnia to Rwanda. “We thought it would be a great opportunity to head to the Riverina area to talk about the service and what we do in case there are people within the community who have missing family members overseas.” Ms Bugden said she had witnessed many heart-warming stories of families reuniting over the years, having received inquiries from colleagues overseas as well as sending inquiries overseas for Australian residents.
Looking for loved ones? The Red Cross is holding a forum tomorrow to assist families separated by war, conflict, disaster or migration. “There are many lovely stories that have come out of this over the years, but I think one of them that stands out started with an inquiry we received from the Hungarian Red Cross,” Ms Bugden said. “It was from a woman looking for her father. During WWII he was a prisoner of war in a camp. She found out after the war he’s migrated to Australia. That inquiry came through to Australian Red Cross and we commenced searching. “We located information about the father and sadly he had passed
away but he did have another child here. We located the child who is now an adult and he then found out about his half-sister. “He thought his father had died during WWII, so he migrated to Australia. But as it turns out, there was a sister still in Europe and they’re now in contact.” She said in that particular instance the search didn’t take long, just a few weeks. “Sometimes it can take months or even years, but we do search until we’ve exhausted all our av-
enues,” Ms Bugden said. If you or someone you know would like more information or want to find out if you or they are eligible for assistance, come along to one of the forums this month or visit www.redcross.org.au. Forum: Thursday 26 June, 3.30pm-5pm at Albury City Library activities room. Red Cross relies on committed volunteers and donors. To donate or volunteer, visit the website or call 1800 811 700.

Breathe in the music ALMOST 240 musicians from beginners to advanced students are set to make beautiful music this week in Albury. Yes it’s time for the 40th annual Border Music Camp at the Scots School from this Sunday through to Saturday 5 July. Border Music Camp is a week-long residential camp for musicians of all ages, from beginners to advanced students. Musicians play in one of six large ensembles and undergo rehearsals and tutorials each morning under the guidance of the camp’s skilled conductors and tutors. Musicians travel from across Australia to take part in the music camp’s unique opportunity in music education. For a week students will live and breathe music. Their playing will be guided by staff and superb musicians who are themselves excited and passionate about music. Mornings are spent in rehearsals taken by the conductors and tutorials taken by an experienced performer in a particular instrument. Campers also sing in a massed choir under the direction of a specialist conductor. In the afternoon students can choose from a number of small groups in the ‘elective sessions’ where they will experience a wide variety of music which can include jazz, choir, big band, Celtic music, string ensemble, experimental music and more. The conductors and tutors assist students to learning new ideas and gaining experience. Border Music Camp also hosts a composer in residence. As many campers as possible have the exciting opportunity to play new music, written especially for them. Students have a choice of living in at the camp or attending for mornings only or for short or long day sessions. This year’s camp will conclude with public concerts on Friday 4 July and Saturday 5 July which are the culmination of the camp.

Skatin’ out for the kids SKATERS from local roller derby team Murray River Derby Dames are excited to be one of over 150 teams for the first ever Skate-a-thon to raise money for SIDS and Kids. The team will gather together on Friday 27 June at PCYC to raise community awareness and funds as part of a nationwide event supported by roller derby teams around Australia. Skaters will be welcoming members of the community to come and support the day. Roller Derby Teams nationwide are coming together on the day to host the biggest joint fund-raiser for SIDS and Kids since the introduction of the sport to Australia. All teams will be conducting a two hour Skate-a-thon in their home towns in order to collect donations for either laps or time on the track. All of these proceeds will go to the SIDS and Kids foundation. SIDS and Kids is dedicated to saving the lives of babies and children during pregnancy, birth, infancy and childhood and supporting bereaved families. Lucy Cinda Sawyer of the Airlie Beach Trash Bags, Queensland, began the planning for the nationwide event. “My friend put her baby girl down for a nap and she never woke up,” she said. “This has shaken me to the core and really pushed me to get everything up and going here to make maximum participation from teams and improve the chances of fund-raising.” SIDS and Kids is an important charity in Australia. It works to find answers for parents by funding and supporting vital research into stillbirths, SIDS and safe sleeping practices. Through evidence-based community education their goal is to prevent infant deaths and to advocate for and support bereaved families. This organisation receives minimal government funding and relies heavily on public fund-raising to carry on with its important work. The venue, PCYC in Albury, has been generous enough to donate its

Members of the public are welcome to come and watch - there will be a sausage sizzle, bake sale and some good music as well. They know their noses SIDS and Kids is urging all Australians to ‘Say G’day the Red Nose Way’ and support Red Nose Day on Friday 27 June. Supporters can get involved by purchasing a red nose, any Red Nose Day product or participate in the new Dare to Care project. Dare to Care is a unique fund-raising experience calling for people to take on a personal challenge while raising funds for Red Nose Day. It could be bungee jumping, taking on a fun run or even going to work in your undies - anything to raise money for the cause. This year the Red Nose Day campaign has an Australian theme and SIDS and Kids is introducing new merchandise - a plush koala (Kevin), kangaroo (Rooby) and snake (Charlie). There will also be an exciting collaboration with four of Australia and New Zealand’s top fashion designers - Manning Cartell, Trelise Cooper, Nicola Finetti and LIFEwithBIRD. Each designer will be creating an exclusive, limited edition T-shirt for the 2014 Red Nose Day campaign which will be available to purchase online. SIDS and Kids helps save thousands of babies’ lives through providing crucial education and community awareness programs. Red Nose Day has been an integral part of the charity’s fund-raising calendar since 1988. SIDS and Kids provides vital safe sleeping education to expectant mothers, their families and healthcare professionals all around Australia. It also provides crucial bereavement support to those affected by the death of a baby or child, and receives 10,000 calls for support and education every year. Since SIDS and Kids’ inception, over $16 million has been devoted into researching stillbirth, neonatal death, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and other causes that contribute to the 3,500 unexpected infant deaths that devastate Australian families each year. By supporting Red Nose Day you will help fund bereavement support for Australian families, further research into areas such as stillbirth and sudden unexpected death in infancy, and community education to reduce the risk of sudden unexpected death in infancy. You can donate via the website at www. rednoseday.com.au, set up an online fundraising page for Dare to Care via www.rednoseday.com.au, or get a virtual red nose via the website at www.rednoseme.com.
Get involved with Red Nose Day this year, this Friday!
A fun fundraiser planned A FUND-raiser will be held at the Baranduda Community Centre from 10am2pm this Saturday, with all proceeds going back to SIDS and Kids. The fund-raiser came about through the Wodonga City Council Youth Leadership Program, which has been running for nine years. “We had three choices of fund-raisers to pick from - men’s health, refugees or SIDS and Kids,” organiser Emily Szepes said. “I work a lot with children and it was something I was passionate about. “Sudden Infant Death Syndrome affects over 3,500 families in Australia throughout the year. “SIDS and Kids’ challenge is to raise enough funds to support anyone seeking care following the death of a child, to support research into sudden infant death and perinatal death, and continue the safe sleeping campaign educating the community to reduce the incidence of SIDS and fatal sleeping accidents.” Ms Szepes, Tanika Thompson and Sam Treffers have all worked hard to organise what they hope will be a fun and successful fund-raiser in light of Red Nose Day, to be held on 27 June. Hayho Animal Nursery, face painting, lucky dips, cupcake decorating, red playdough, colouring pictures, mask making, a raffle and a sausage sizzle are all featuring throughout the day, along with games including jumping bag races, egg and spoon and much more. ted na Do $50

Kids Show: not for kids By KRYSTEN MANUEL DON’T forget to read the fine print on this one! The Umbilical Brothers’ newest show – Kids Show – is by far their most edgy, outrageous, and hilarious yet – but most certainly NOT for kids. “We did a few test runs in Wollongong and Gosford and we had a couple of eight-yearolds in the front row which was a little awkward,” Umbilical Brother David Collins said. “A lot of explanation needed to be happening on the way home for those kids – a lot.” Yes, this is the Umbilical Brothers as you’ve never seen them before – a brave step forward into adults only entertainment, but bringing with them David’s well-loved sweet naivety and his fellow ‘Umbis’ mischievous antics. “In Kids Show we’re not Shane and David, we’re Dane and Shavid – popular kids’ television hosts,” David explains. “But something is going wrong, the kids aren’t reacting the same way as they used to. Slowly but surely we work out they’re adults and all hell breaks loose. We have to adapt ourselves to fit the audience – what we think the audience need or want.
“We hardly ever swear in our other show but of course the one called Kids Show is nonstop swearing. “And it’s certainly the most extreme when it comes to violence. At one point there’s a scene called The Brady Bunch Massacre in which I systematically kill every member of the Brady Bunch in really hilarious, violent ways.” Throughout the show Dane and Shavid welcome new guests and sing songs – just like real kids’ shows ... “We have a very special guest over from America,” David said. “All I can say is he’s probably treated a certain way around the world and we don’t treat him that way. We can’t say his name for legal reasons but it’s pretty obvious who he is ... “There’s a returning character from one of our shows Speedmouse, which is little Timmy. He’s an invisible character – in fact he saves our lives at the end of the show. “And there’s a song, a beautiful song called Feeling Good – if anyone wants to check it out on YouTube they’ll probably go out and buy a ticket after watching it ... But don’t watch too much!”
The idea for Kids Show surprisingly (or perhaps not so surprisingly) derived from a kids show David and Shane created in 2006. After being stopped from doing a great many things in The Upside Down Show, the boys decided it would be funny to do the opposite of what they’d been told – enter: Kids Show. “Shane and I made an award-winning show for children called The Upside Down Show and it was for three to seven-year-olds,” David said. “When we were making that show there were a lot of things we couldn’t do because we were asked not to, generally because they didn’t want kids copying what we did and suing the network – things like jumping on the couch and talking about how bad birds in cages are. “So all the stuff that went wrong for us in making the kids show we wrote down in a notebook. “When we were inventing a new show we thought there was really only one way to go ... ” Don’t miss Dane and Shavid in Kids Show this Friday, 7.30pm at the Albury Entertainment Centre. For bookings, call 02 6043 5610.

start of the film anyway. So 22 Jump Street basically follows the same storyline as its predecessor. Two unlikely cops/mates are thrown into an undercover mission that entails going to university to find the supplier of a new and dangerous drug, Wifi. Along the way, Jenko and Schmidt’s bromance takes a few hits, which even finds them in a psychologist’s office progressing through couples therapy. Jenko has found a kindred spirit in Zook (Wyatt Russell) and Schmidt has finally found a potential girlfriend from the alternative art scene. Needless to say, the two worlds just don’t mesh. In order to finish the case, Jenko and Schmidt need to resolve their differences like any successful couple – take some time apart, give a little and al-
MOVIE: 22 Jump Street STARRING: Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube DIRECTOR: Phil Lord, Chris Miller DURATION: 110 minutes THERE wasn’t a dry seat in the house at Regent Cinemas Albury last Thursday night. Between Mr Walters’ new lady parts, Jenko (Tatum) and his miserable attempt at coming off as a Mexican gangster and Schmidt’s (Hill) hilariously dangerous sexual conquest, 22 Jump Street was everything I’d hoped it would be. Don’t worry if you haven’t seen 21 Jump Street – to enjoy this you don’t need to and even if you did there’s a kind of annoying recap at the
ways have each other’s backs. It’s not exactly an unexpected finale, but it was well worth the ride. This would have to be the funniest film I’ve seen Tatum or Hill in yet. The pair really stepped it up a notch in taking on their characters – Tatum’s oblivious stupidity and Hill’s knack for making a complete dog’s breakfast of an already bad situation are priceless. As much as I’d like to rub my hands together and cackle as I slip in an epic spoiler, I won’t – it’s just too good, you must see for yourself. However, I will say an unexpected relationship arises between two colleagues that will have you snorting and slapping your thighs from the moment the penny drops!

Previous Australian World Presidents are Woodrow Weight OBE and John Greig OAM. “Robyn has been a member of the FIABCI Australia Chapter for 37 years. During this time she has served on professional committees, attended 24 FIABCI World Congresses and is a proud recipient of the FIABCI Australia Medal of Honour,” REIA president Peter Bushby said. “Robyn is a highly respected real estate practitioner from Melbourne and has been a stalwart of the industry not

Steady growth in prices WHILE there has been strong property sales activity in Melbourne in recent months, including in June, across regional Victoria the story is one of steady growth. With interest rates still at record lows, property prices have continued to grow at a solid pace, with the REIV’s House Price Index up by about 3.4 per cent over the past 12 months. This HPI, a useful measure of market activity based on sales data, reflected higher price increases across the three major regional centres of Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong. The strongest growth over the past year was in Bendigo, with 6.5 per cent, and Geelong, with 6.4 per cent. Unit and townhouse prices in regional Victoria have also shown solid growth. REIV calculates a Unit Price Index, reflecting activity in the sale of units, townhouses and apartments, which was also up by 2.7 per cent in the past 12 months. For investors in regional Victoria the news was also steady on the rental market. The vacancy rate across the state was stable at 2.5 per cent in May.
And although there were small increases in the vacancy rate for the three major regional centres - up 0.3 per cent to 4.3 per cent in Geelong, up 0.1 per cent to 2.4 per cent in Bendigo and up 0.3 per cent to 2.4 per cent in Ballarat - there has been a general reduction in the vacancy rate over the past year. Median house rents across the state rose from $295 a week in April to $300 a week in May - a 1.7 per cent increase. There was a $10 a week increase in Bendigo to $300, while Geelong remained stable at $330 and Ballarat stable at $280. The median unit rental across regional Victoria fell slightly in May - but has grown in the past year, and is currently at $240 a week. With new housing being built in a number of regional centres and towns, and those homes being sought for both lifestyle and affordability reasons, the increase in new residential building approvals in Victoria in April was good news. The 14.8 per cent increase was above the five-year average and more than half those approvals were for houses.

Homes&Property
Albury Wodonga
Dream home has the lot SO THIS is where they got the term ‘dream home’ from? Ladies and gentlemen, this Cavalier-built display home is a must-see for all home buyers with a taste for elegant, modern style, ingenious design and quality, quality, quality. From the street, number 4 is quite impressive with its landscaped font yard and black rendered facade against a stark white roof. Through the raised entry and to your right is the master bedroom. King size, enjoying ample natural light and Soft.E carpet, this room also offers a sizable walk-in robe. The ensuite features the all-important his and hers vanity with modern stainless steel fittings, and an oversize waterfall shower with built-in shelf. Another particularly striking feature of the bathroom is the tile used – which continues throughout the ‘wet’ rooms of the house – large and black with silver flecks throughout, the tile is a great indicator of the care for detail represented throughout the home. Down the hallway and to your right is the lounge room, sectioned off beautifully with a Japanese-style feature divider. This room is lit by two vertical windows plus downlights,

and is carpeted with the same dark, shaggy Soft.E carpet as the master bedroom – exactly what you want underfoot in this chilly weather. Further down the Quickstep floating floorboards and the hallway opens out to the study, which features extra walk-in storage, meaning the room could even be used as a fifth bedroom. The open plan kitchen, living and dining room is by far the most impressive area of the home. Between the cathedral ceiling, marble benchtops and view to the all-weather entertaining area, you’ll be fighting over who gets to cook every evening. The kitchen’s best feature is the butler’s pantry, which is fully equipped with shelving and cupboards, two deep double sinks with industrial fittings and quality stainless steel dishwasher. The rest of the kitchen has been cleverly designed to function with the greatest of ease and look amazing at the same time. Drawers are self-closing, with overhead cupboards conveniently electric, which lift up to open. The sink is lovely and deep and the 900mm oven and cooktop is quality stainless steel.
The entertaining area is accessed through the dining/living area sliding doors and is so beautifully appointed and inviting it serves as a view in itself to those utilising the heart of the home. This area features elegant limestone tiles, ceiling fans, a $2500 built-in sound system and a barbecue sure to be the envy of every male visitor ... complete with icebox, sink, storage and wok burner, this is the mother of all barbecues. Bedrooms one, two and three are located past the living area and are all queen size, all with built-in robes, luscious carpet and downlights. One of the most clever features of the home is found nestled in between these three rooms (and the powder room, bathroom and laundry) – the third living area. This area is of good size, with yard access and tucked away from the main living area, the perfect kids’ retreat. Finally, the double remote control garage also features built-in storage with side gate assess for the yard to park the boat or caravan. 4 Henry Close is a dream for families, couples and investors alike (with a rental return of $750 a week!)

Long road ahead HELLO fellow motorcyclist, winter has really hit this week and you would be forgiven for thinking it was too cold to do any riding at all, but let’s spare a thought for those that use their bikes every day as well as those that choose to embrace the season. There are plenty of people that rely on their income by using their motorcycle daily with Australia post (posties), motorcycle couriers and farmers being but a few that springs readily to mind as well as the smart riders that choose a motorcycle as their daily commute, saving money while enjoying the trip to work and home every day and then there are those of us
that choose to for various recreational reasons to enjoy our motorcycle riding whenever we can and this weekend was no exception while Brenda and myself enjoyed a great ride on Sunday with friends in what turned out to be a beautiful afternoon. Bradley, along with a large contingent of riders from Albury, Wodonga and surrounding districts were racing at Seymour motocross track and the hills and country side around us were filled with motorcyclist enjoying themselves. How fortunate are we in this day and age to be able to enjoy ourselves all year round and this is partly because of
the quality of the clothing and safety gear available to us now and partly because of the safety, affordability and quality of the motorcycles available to us. We even have access now to heated vests which can be wired into the motorcycle electrical system to keep the body warm as well as heated grips to keep our hands warm. This time of year is also a great opportunity to update your bike or riding gear with most manufacturers and companies offering some very good end of financial year specials. So as we past the shortest day of the year let’s look forward to the riding opportunities that lay ahead.

Local Sport Value of racing By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE Dederang Races is a day marked religiously on the social calendar for many, but a recent report has highlighted just how important the racing industry, and events like the Dederang Races, are to the Ovens and Murray region. The Victorian State Government report - Size and Scope of the Victorian Racing Industry - shows the thoroughbred racing industry generates $35.8 million of value-added impact, engages more than 1,200 people as an employee, volunteer or participant in the region and provides full-time employment for close to 350 people. Unveiled by Premier and Minister for Racing Denis Napthine, the report incorporates the three codes of racing - thoroughbred, harness and greyhound. A thoroughbred-specific version of the report demonstrates the impact the state’s 71 racing clubs and more than 500 annual race meetings have on the economy and social fabric of both metropolitan and regional Victoria. For people like Neville and Bev Seymour of Dederang, the importance of Victoria’s racing industry has been prominent to them from the very beginning. A life member of Dederang Picnic Race Club, Neville became vicepresident in the 1970s before going on to spend 22 years as president, a role he stepped down from two years ago. “My father was involved with the club and we used to go along to working bees with him, I suppose it just grew from there,” he said. “Over the years Bev has been very involved too - organising events, representing the club and
The Wodonga Races average 10 meetings a year. promoting picnic racing wherever possible.” At 78 years old, Mr Seymour takes great pride in the fact he has played some part in ensuring Dederang is known far and wide for its annual picnic race meeting. For almost half a century, he and his wife Bev have dedicated hours each week to the Dederang Picnic Race Club in roles ranging from club president to working bee co-ordinator to ensure its January picnic meeting continued to prosper. The couple’s 48-year association at Dederang was recently recog-
nised, with a new category at the annual Picnic Racing Awards for clubs which only host one meeting a year named in their honour. “It was a huge surprise when we found out the award had been named in our recognition,” Mr Seymour said. “Dederang has become known for its race meeting and it gives me satisfaction to simply be able to say I’ve been a part of something successful which has helped put the region on the map.” The event will celebrate its 150th year in 2015, with the couple al-
ready heavily involved in planning the celebration. Neville and Bev’s story is not unlike that of many other volunteers who are the lifeblood of race clubs across the Victoria. “There’s no doubt that Dederang - just like many racing clubs - wouldn’t operate without volunteers,” Seymour said. “I’m extremely proud of how the club has progressed, and of what it has done for the local community. We touch so many people and businesses - from the fire brigade which looks after the gate and the parking, to the local businesses which look after the catering - the whole community gets involved and the meeting brings great economic benefit. “I’d certainly encourage the next generation to get behind their local organisations to help them to prosper.” Racing Wodonga general manager Tom O’Connor agrees, saying the racing industry in Wodonga is both well-balanced and an important part of Wodonga’s economic fabric. “The race course has 12 active thoroughbred trainers working at the precinct and the club averages 10 race meetings a year,” he said. “Combining the trainer’s complex and the events of racing, the racing industry has a significant business footprint in the city of Wodonga.” Premier and Minister for Racing Denis Napthine said the size and scope study showed how vital racing was to Victoria, the state’s economy and the many people who worked in or enjoyed the industry. “This ranges from the once a year punter to the owners and breeders who invest in the dream of breeding or owning a champion racehorse,” Dr Napthine said.
Gators’ big bite THE Green’s Garden and Ag North East Lady Bushrangers have gone down 65 to 60 in a close encounter with the Shepparton Lady Gators in round 13 of the Big V. Shepparton were able to build a comfortable 15-point lead in the first half, thanks to an impressive 26-point second quarter. The Lady Bushrangers stepped it up out of the half-time break, but ultimately the damage had been done as the Gators held on in a tight finish. It was a disappointing result for the Lady Bushrangers as they were able to out rebounds and look after the ball much better than the Gators, only to be let down by another poor shooting night. The Lady Bushrangers had their opportunities as they took 25 more shots for the game, but would pay the price as they converted on only 29 per cent from the field. Stacey Browne was a stand-out for the Lady Bushrangers, leading from the front to finish with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Browne was well supported by livewire Alana Sutton who compiled a brilliant stat line of 11 points, 11 rebounds and six steals. The Gators were led by league standout Rhianna Barton with an impressive 18 point and 18 rebound double-double. The Subway North East Bushrangers have gone down to the league-leading Shepparton Gators 87-55. After being thoroughly outclassed the first time the sides met, the Bushrangers were looking to put up a better fight and give the Gators a real run for their money. The second and third quarters would prove to be the turning point, as the Gators MVP favourite Matt Bartlett flicked the switch and began to turn the screws on his way to a game-high 28 points and eight assists. Despite the final margin being 32 points, the Bushrangers can take a lot of positives from the game and look forward to transferring it to the final six games of the season. Both Bushrangers sides return home next weekend to take on the Mornington Breakers at the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday night. - Sam McDonald, North East Bushrangers.
Huon Hill: running on top of the world By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE Huon Hill Trail Run last Sunday exceeded organisers’ expectations, with 77 race finishers and gorgeous weather to boot. The run, hosted by Parklands Albury Wodonga and Riverina Endurance, was formally known as race three of the AWMA Trail Run Series, but was held as a stand-alone event this year with the 13.8-kilometre course unchanged from its 2013 design. Of the males, the race was won by Jesse Featonby, followed by Luke Preston and Eamonn Staunton. Of the females, Julie GollanFoard came in first, followed by Bree Robinson and Belinda Dagget. “It went so well,” event director Brendan Murray said. “We had so much good feedback about the course, navigation was great - which was one of my biggest fears because it was quite technical - it was all really smooth. “We had 77 participants so the numbers were double what we expected. “The weather was perfect there was some fog on the top of the mountain to begin. As that
started to drop runners would be running above the clouds in different sections. The scenery was spot-on, perfect for what I was trying to achieve. “The actual course is extremely challenging, which is appealing - that’s what competitors are after. “It’s an excellent opportunity to display our local environment - these need to keep happening so we can get people to have that experience. “It was an excellent community collaboration. I was able to get about 10 businesses that helped out with volunteering and prizes on the day.” The full AWMA Trail Run Series was well enjoyed by the local running community last year and will be proudly restored in 2015, thanks to the collaboration between Riverina Endurance and Parklands Albury Wodonga. The 2015 series has been planned to take place as a threerun series, with dates being slightly modified to better suit both local and national running calendars. Past competitors have described the courses as among the best in the country for their distance.
The Huon Hill Trail Run got off to a flying start.

Just oozing with talent Simon
Says with SIMON CORR SUPPORTERS of the Ovens & Murray are pretty lucky really. We live in the greatest inland city in the world and have an incredible strong, physical and highly skilful local football competition that is littered with some brilliant local talent and a fair old spread of guys that have played at the highest level. Just when we were starting to get used to seeing the weekly talent of former AFL stars in Fevola, Akermanis, Polo, Pettifer, Hyde, Ednie, Hollands and so on ... The league goes and introduces us to more. Former St Kilda star Justin Koschitzke made a slow entrance to Ovens & Murray season 2014, collecting just one possession in his round 1 appearance for the Panthers. However, “Big Kosi’s” form of late has been hard not to notice. The tall forward has kicked 20 goals in his last three games, collecting best-on-ground honours in all three as well. His charismatic approach makes him universally popular among all supporters. Kosi may go a long way in seeing Lavington break the recent trend of Albury and Yarrawonga grand finals. At first attempt, the name Setanta O’hAilpin can be tricky to pronounce, however so often has his performances been spoken of this season, that it now rolls off the tongue. The big former Carlton and Greater Western Sydney player is dominating the league in front of goals this season. Setanta has 59 goals from 10 games and has assisted in many others as well. He is a very hard man to defend as he plays an unconventional yet very effective role as a forward, for such a big man he is also very good at the ground level. The Tigers have kicked over 450 points more than any other side in the competiton so far, which is a good indication of how big his influence has been. Daniel Archer played only a few games for St Kilda, which comes as a big surprise when watching him play. The big blonde Wangaratta Rovers centre half forward has really impressed at the W.J.Findlay Oval. For such a big man, Archer works incredibly hard leading up and down the

Picture: ADAM WILSON ground to present as a target , something no doubt he learnt from his time with Nick Riewoldt. He takes a strong contested mark and he and his Rovers teammates are starting to form a formidable attack. As they always say, big men don’t get any smaller come finals ... And he is certainly that! In addition to those three, we have also witnessed former Essendon goal kicking legend Scott Lucas for a couple of games with the Myrtleford Alpine Saints, and this weekend former Collingwood and Fremantle footballer Chris Tarrant will line up for the
Wodonga Raiders. Tarrant will attract a lot of interest largely due to the fact he was once a power forward for the country’s most famous club, although I doubt very much the Raiders existing full forward Dean Limbach will let “Taz” steal the show. Limbach has been super this season with 49 goals to date. This weekend Albury will host Wangaratta Rovers. The Rovers are improving every round and a contest against the best will give them a great assessment of where they are at.
On the ball with Matt Dalby Co-Owner of Vogue Window Tinting
North Albury will be desperate to experience another victory as it has been some time since their last, although the win - less Bulldogs will see this as a great chance for themselves as well as what should be a fairly tight contest. Lavington will host Myrtleford Alpine Saints who are enjoying a real purple patch at the moment. The Panthers have been the toughest to score against once again this season and have too much at stake later in the year to slip up in this game.
