Simulated crash driving home safety message By JOLENE OGLE YEAR 12 students from Noosa District State High School were given a close up view of road trauma this week, with a lifelike traffic crash simulation. Schoolies Week is on the horizon, and the simulation proved a timely reminder for NDSHS students to take care on the road. The simulation included emergency response crews from ambulance, police, fire service and an undertaker who all took part in the confronting event. NDSHS teacher and Queensland Fire and Rescue volunteer, Brad Ensbey, talked the students through the simulation - driving home the road safety message. “We don’t do this to scare the students,” he said. “We’re trying to show them what really happens - the truth.” Four Year 12 drama students did an amazing job acting as the driver and passengers of the crashed vehicle, with make-up used to create life-like cuts and bruises. Our shark shame By JOLENE OGLE PHOTOS of a three-metre long Tiger shark floating lifelessly from a drum line have sparked community outrage, with calls to remove baited lines. Noosa local, Bronte Wootton, took the snaps last Tuesday, while spearfishing off Castaways Beach. Since posting the photos on Facebook, Mr Wootton has received numerous messages of outrage and disgust at the practice from the local community.

Mr Wootton has called for the lines to be removed, labelling drum lines as an “inhumane” way to kill an animal, describing the scene as depressing and sad. “You just see the shark and there is nothing you can do,” he said. “They are just waiting to die. “Everything would be the same without the drum lines.” University of Queensland Professor Mike Bennett, who specialises

in the study of sharks and rays along Queensland’s coast, agrees with Mr Wootton, saying the lines have “zero effect”. “The point I would make about the drum lines off Noosa is that their catch rate is not high, considering how many sharks there are around,” he said. According to the Queensland Shark Control Program, there are 26 drum lines in use along the coast from Noosa to just south of Yaroomba, with two shark nets located off Noosa Main

Beach and one located off Coolum Beach. Within the three months from 1 January to 31 March, 10 sharks were reported as caught on either drum lines or within nets. Prof Bennett, who studied the catch rates of drum lines and nets, said a plethora of misconceptions surround sharks and the fishing devices used to bait and kill them. “A lot of people consider that the nets are there to keep the sharks away

from the beach, but it’s not the fact,” he said. “The fact is the nets are actively fishing and trying to catch sharks. So that’s why they’re set. They’re not to keep things out. “In fact, most of the sharks caught in the shark nets are on the beach side of the net. In other words, they’re already closer to the beach and they seem to be caught when they’re swimming away.” Continued page 10

Jetty no petty fight By JONATHON HOWARD PENSIONER Kevin Driscoll says he will continue to make a personal stand until Noosa Council rebuilds his jetty. Mr Driscoll and his wife Vicki purchased the jetty, located at the corner of William Street and Gympie Terrace, in 1993. The couple claim the adjacent footpath, which is under Noosa Council’s jurisdiction, shifted during floodwater and led to the deterioration of the former jetty and current pylons. Since featuring in last week’s edition of Noosa Today (19 June), Mr Driscoll said he had spoken to dozens of residents and received visits from Noosa councillors. “Since the article, I’ve met with Cr Sandy Bolton, Cr Joe Jurisevic and Cr Frank Wilkie,” he said. “All the councillors said they feel for my situation and would investigate the matter.” Mr Driscoll previously said he did not have an issue with Noosa councillors, but instead took aim at council’s centre management. The standoff could now lead to Noosa Council repairing the ailing footpath and avoiding the Driscoll’s jetty site altogether. Noosa Council’s director of planning and infrastructure, Martin Drydale, said State agencies had advised that Mr and Mrs Driscoll held the permit to occupy this jetty. “However, due to the deterioration of the structure they no longer had legal tenure over the jetty including any

right to rebuild,” he said. “Mr and Mrs Driscoll did remain the owner of the pylons in the river and the State Government has imposed a liability to maintain them. “As a result of that information provided by the state, council has advised Mr and Mrs Driscoll that as part of the application to undertake the works to the footpath that it would offer to remove the pylons which would extinguish their state-imposed liability at no cost to them. “If Mr and Mrs Driscoll do not wish to take up this offer, then council will continue with the planned footpath works for William Street and Gympie Terrace which will not impact on the jetty site.

Roundup divides community By JONATHON HOWARD DEBATE around the use of Roundup to kill grass near Lake Weyba has divided many residents and raised fresh concerns for bees. Concerns were raised last week over the use of the council’s herbicide “Roundup”, which contains the active ingredient glyphosate. Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide used to kill weeds, especially annual broadleaf weeds and grasses. Mayor Noel Playford voiced his support for council’s spraying program and cited several benefits including cost to ratepayers and its effectiveness in combating invasive grasses. He said he could understand some residents were concerned with the use of chemical sprays near waterways. “However, the correct concentrations of the herbicide glyphosate were not proven to be harmful,” he said. “Until evidence emerges that there’s a risk using the herbicide, it will continue.” Mayor Playford also defended council employee’s spraying techniques, which several residents’ claimed was “haphazard” along the lake’s edge. “There is comprehensive training for council employees to recognise and combat invasive grasses,” he said. “There’s also cost to consider spraying is a lot cheaper and more effective than slashing which would need to be done more frequently and at greater cost to ratepayers.” Noosa resident Kerry Sandford, who holds a Bachelors Degree in Agricultural Science, said the claims against the

use of Roundup were “outrageous”. “It is unbelievable that the “resident who did not want to be named” made outrageous claims with no scientific basis about Roundup (glyphosate),” she said. “The active ingredient of “Agent Orange” was 2.4.5T which was manufactured by Dow, Monsanto and ICI and has nothing to do with Roundup. “The claims made by the same resident about Roundup’s link with autism, cancer etc have no scientific basis and are scare mongering at best.” However, several other residents disputed the “safe Roundup” claim and said it killed hundreds of native bees and other vital insects. “I totally agree with no spraying,” Barb Partridge, a Noosa resident, said. “We do know that since spraying is being used freely, our bees and good insects are disappearing, let alone the impact on the waterways - stop the spraying.” To spray or not to spray - give us your thoughts by emailing newsdesk@noosatoday.net.au

Plea to move ’em on By JONATHON HOWARD A PETITION calling for the Wallace Park flying fox colony to be shifted will be handed to Noosa Council tonight. Councillor Tony Wellington will be given a brief 60 seconds to pass the petition with 470 signatures to council’s CEO Brett De Chastel, during the council’s ordinary meeting in Tewantin (Thursday 26 June). Questions surrounding the validity of the petition have already been raised by several residents, including whether the petition was from those living in Wallace Park or not. Concerned resident Kay Fielden wrote to Noosa Today and said residents were “fed up with the bats living in the middle of suburbia”. “At the moment Noosa residents are being subjected to treatment by the bats as was the case of people portrayed by Alfred Hitchcock in the film The Birds,” Mrs Fielden wrote. “Council was contacted about their presence more than a year ago, but has done nothing. “The bats defecate, copulate, pollute, urinate and screech 24-hours a day.” Mrs Fielden said the flying fox colony had “pushed out the local wildlife” and “stripped the trees bare”. “Local residents are suffering continual damage to cars, boats, trailers, roofs, patios, furniture, pools and gardens,” she said.

NOOSA Today asked residents visiting Wallace Park if they think the flying fox colony should be moved out? “Yes, I think they should. There’s plenty of other areas for them to go - plus the smell and noise is really bad.” Julie Maran, of Noosaville “I really enjoy the sight of them and don’t have an issue with them. They’re a natural species that make up this wonderful region.” Roger Mountford, a regular Noosa holiday maker

The Wallace Park Nature Reserve is home to hundreds of flying foxes and some residents want them moved out. “Local businesses are suffering from loss of patronage, damage to vehicles, pools and pumps and skyrocketing maintenance costs and still the bats come.” But early indications from animal support groups have revealed now would be the worst time of the year to disperse any flying foxes. Flying-fox Rescue Release Noosa Inc co-ordinator Jan Davie said many of the female flying foxes at Wallace Park were in their third trimester of pregnancy.

“Push these flying foxes around now and they will abort their young,” she said. “The stress of dispersal is just too much for them to handle.” Mrs Davie has called for residents to be patient and said the flying fox colony would reduce in numbers. “There’s an estimated 5000 flying foxes in Wallace Park and their numbers should decline over the next few months,” she said. Mrs Davie also highlighted that

Reagan Allen weekends, which led to the award. “It was really thanks to a referral from DW Sound that started the whole thing for me,” he said. “Although there’s not a lot of money to be made in sound and lighting, which is my passion, I have to work as a plasterer to keep me afloat.”

Reagan said he was offered a chance to go on tour with DW Sound, but turned the offer down. “I just felt it was a little too soon to be going on tour - so I declined the offer,” he said. The youngster is now hoping to fulfil his passion of working full-time on stage production in the future.

Eighteen-year-old Reagan Allen graduated Year 12 last year from Noosa District State School, Cooroy. But don’t let his age or appearance deceive you, Reagan, who is working as an apprentice plasterer, is fast becoming one of the Coast’s best sound and lighting engineers. His CV includes sound and lighting set-ups for the Big Pineapple festival, Gympie Muster, Woodford Folk Festival as well as DJ events. He’s also earned himself recognition from Federal Wide Bay MP and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, who awarded him one of the nation’s top prizes for Year 12 students undertaking Vocational Education and Training in School (VETiS). “The Australian Vocational Student Prize (AVSP) recognises outstanding skills, commitment and achievements as school students undertake vocational education in their final year,” Mr Truss said. Reagan said he had spent time teaching others the art of sound and lighting during his

What They Said

Wallace Park offers the flying foxes a nature reserve. “Trees were once in abundance around this area which is one of only a few nature reserves available,” she said. “They are native animals, the trees will recover and they need to be left alone.” Mrs Fielden said if the petition was seen as unsuccessful, a large public meeting will take place with media and politicians invited.

“They’ve been forced out of other areas (such as Cassia Avenue, Coolum). Their numbers will reduce over time once the melaleuca flowering ceases. The flying foxes are not aliens, they’re native species that pollinate our forests - they should be left alone.” Bob Carey, of Noosaville “If there’s a nice way to move them - then I think do it. They stink.” Amy Thompson, of Noosaville

Six of the best BENNY’S BEAT BENNY PIKE

THERE was a real changing of the guard at the first Sunshine Coast Sports Federation nominees’ breakfast at Maroochy RSL. Six Noosa Shire athletes took centre stage as 12 senior and junior sporting stars were presented with their monthly financial rewards. Cooroy’s star pitcher Jocelyn McCallum was first up after another magnificent Inter-State Series and selection in the Aussie team to play in the world titles in August. Despite teaching in Mornington Island, the 29-year-old is about to unleash a new found pitch on the rest of the world. She learnt all the tricks playing locally in the junior and senior competition. Next up is another softballer in national under 17/19 player Luke Thomas. Most observers felt his consistency and solidness behind the plate was his best weapon. Not only is Luke good on the field, he has a level two umpires and level one coaching certificate. Luke will be around for quite a while. Joining him is Belli Park’s Super star of Australian Cycling Shara Gillow. The London Olympian and Greenedge rider claimed another Oceania time trial crown and just missed the treble of national time trial crowns. If she had of won, she would have equalled the great Kathy Watt’s triple from the 80s. Shara’s dad David represented Zimbabwe in cycling at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. New to the Noosa aquatic centre is world under 18 400 metres swimming Champion Remy Fairweather. The 17 year old was forced into the move north after her coach was left without a pool to train in. Remy is now in the very capable hands of Olympic coach John Rogers. John is no stranger to long distance coaching, having guided Michelle Ford and Max Metzker to

Jordan Mercer Olympic medals. Remy could surprise everyone in Glasgow, and is a real star of the future. May was a terrific month with athletic star Jordan Csabi and lifesaving’s Jordan Mercer taking the honours. Csabi had already won the national under 18 200 metres but it was his selection in the national team to contest the Youth Olympics in China that got him over the line. Already running 21.55 sec, he is zeroing in on the national time 20.90, a timing his coach is confident he’ll make. Jordan is not only a whiz at athletics, he intends to study sport and exercise science next year at Sunshine Coast University. Number six was Noosa Heads lifesaver Jordan Mercer, who not only captained the Australian team to compete at the World ISA Paddle-Board championships, but also duplicated her 2013 performance by claiming another marathon title. The result adding to her growing list of titles, which include her Molokai to Oahu Ocean racing crowns. She will be attempting to add to that list in July in this year’s event. It was a star-studded breakfast with 12 athletes, nine different sports, five women, three world champions and eight Australian Team-members. The oldest was Caloundra snooker player Steve Donohoe 34 and 15-year-old motorbike champion Troy Guenther from Beerwah the baby. It really exposed a great sporting future for the entire Coast. Until next time.

‘Let us join Noosa’ call By JONATHON HOWARD SEVERAL Doonan residents have stood up and voiced their support for a boundary re-alignment which would incorporate Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs (EDV) into the Noosa Council. During the past week, Noosa Today has received dozens of emails regarding the EDV re-boundary bid with the majority in favour, while a smaller group says “leave the boundary alone”. Doonan couple Lissa Evans and Dave Clarke said they feel “little to no connection” with the Sunshine Coast Council. “It is Noosa we relate to - our free newspapers are Noosa Today and Noosa News (we don’t buy the Sunshine Coast Daily),” Mr Clarke said. “The places we shop and visit for recreation are in the Noosa Shire Council.” Mr Clarke purchased land on Grays Drive, Doonan, about 30 years ago and said he feels his values are more in line with Noosa Council. “We’ve looked at the Sunshine Coast’s Plan and Doonan doesn’t even crack a mention!” he said.

Doonan residents and couple Lissa Evans and Dave Clarke are voicing their support for a re-boundary into Noosa. “The only interest the Sunshine Coast has in opposing this move is that they like to be associated with well known ‘alternative’ places (Eumundi - markets) to add a little diversity to their consumer-obsessed shops and restaurants in the rest of the council (shire).” Mr Clarke said he suspects the majority of Caloundra residents would struggle to point out Doonan on a map. Meanwhile, Noosa Council mayor Noel Playford told ABC Radio that he would support the re-boundary bid provided enough of the EDV

residents were in favour. However, the re-boundary bid has also received some negative feedback from several residents concerned about the EDV survey results. “EDV community consultations and meetings are structured to get the results the EDV want,” said John Strano of Eumundi. “Eumundi is arguably more famous than Noosa - we do not want to give up the heritage and unique character of our hinterland town to become part of what is essentially a small beach.”

Pomona resident, Joy Ringrose, outlined three points in favour of the re-boundary and said it was “not a question of if, but when”. “Firstly, these districts are geographically much closer to the shire offices in Noosa, should residents need to have face-to-face dealings with councillors, or council staff,” she said. “Secondly, these four districts have much in common culturally with the other Noosa hinterland districts, therefore they would benefit culturally from closer links via council programs. Conversely, they would be a positive addition to Noosa Shire. “Lastly, and most importantly, the vast majority of people living in these areas have a very strong wish to be amalgamated with the Noosa Shire. It is very arrogant to ride roughshod over the wishes of so many people in the name of empirebuilding and financial gain.” Mr Ringrose said it would save both councils a lot of time and energy if the wishes of the residents were adhered to. Have your say by emailing Noosa Today: newsdesk@noosatoday. com.au

It’s our treat, says Rotary in their latest medical good turn THE Rotary Club of Noosa has helped complete a mammoth task transporting tonnes of medical equipment to Mozambique, Africa. The club partnered with Australian travellers John and Aliye Panos to fill a 40-foot-long container with hospital beds, linen, walking aids and medical equipment ready for shipping to Beira Central Hospital in Mozambique. It was the second container to be sent in the past two years. The latest container was filled with 28 hospital beds, three operating tables, 83 walkers, 37 wheel chairs, 40 hospital mattresses and other medical equipment. All of the medical equipment was donated by Queensland hospitals and nursing homes. Over the last 30 years, John and Aliye Panos have travelled southern central Africa extensively together, abandoning the tourist enclaves in favour of less travelled areas.

John and Aliye Panos, right, with the hospital administrator at Biera Central Hospital, Mozambique. Purely by chance, while travelling through Mozambique in 2010, the adventurous couple met a member of the Beira Rotary Club, who organised a comprehensive viewing of the Beira Central Hospital. The chance encounter led to the ambitious project to transport medical supplies. Rotary Club of Noosa president Tess Alexandroff said the proj-

ect cost was estimated at almost $350,000 to date. “Arrangements were now being made for reassembly of the larger pieces of medical equipment and it is anticipated that distribution to hospitals and clinics in Mozambique will commence within the next three weeks,” she said. “Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in Africa and this

equipment will be of lasting benefit to many people often hospitalised in unsanitary and impoverished conditions.” The project was a co-operative effort between Noosa Rotary, Jindalee Rotary, Queensland hospital and nursing homes as well as Beira Rotarians. Beira Rotarians raised about $9000, which paid for the purchase of the container and all freight costs.

Have you lost something? A man’s wedding ring was found at Marcus Beach.

Ring seeks reunion By JONATHON HOWARD LOSING an expensive wedding ring is every married man’s (and woman’s) worst nightmare. So when Noosa local Frances Gibson found a man’s wedding ring on the beachfront at Glen Eden, Marcus Beach, she thought best to phone the local newspaper. “I found it on the weekend of Saturday 7 June, and thought someone must be devastated to have lost their wedding ring,” she said. “It looks like it might be expensive and I just want to return it to its rightful owner.” Certain details about the ring have been withheld in order for the owner to describe the ring. Frances said she received a signet ring when she was eight-years old and was devastated when she lost it down the drain in her twenties. “It was so sad when I lost my first signet ring,” she said. “I just hope this ring can be returned to its owner.” To find out more and give a specific description of the ring phone Frances on 0424 183 493. Forced to leave Happy Holiday Sale By JONATHON HOWARD

THE former staff of the Peregian Members Club are struggling to find local employment, following the club’s shock closure last month. Former Peregian Members Club manager, Martin Isherwood, heaped praise on his former team of 18 full-time, parttime and casual staff. He offered a glowing reference to any potential Noosa employers wanting to throw them a lifeline. Mr Isherwood himself was also struggling to secure a new management role in Noosa and he is considering shifting his young family. “There’s simply not a lot of work - particularly during end of financial year,” he said. “I’m weighing up my options and I’m applying for jobs in Byron Bay or possibly even Port Macquarie - I’d love to stay in Noosa.” The former Peregian Members Club head chef, who was building a home in Noosa and

From page 1 Prof Bennett said the drum lines effectively suffocated the shark as they became fatigued from continuously swimming in circles as they are hooked to the drum line. “Sharks need to continuously pass water over their gills and the only way to do that is to swim, so if those species are caught on a drum line the ability for them to swim in a leisurely way is reduced,” he said. “You can add to that, it is bound to be stressful to the animal in some way because it is being restrained against its wishes.” Prof Bennett said historically, the lines and nets were put in place to try and catch sharks that could potentially cause a risk to humans swimming in the water, but Prof Bennett said the chance of a shark attack was extremely rare. “(For an attack to occur) you need a shark in the water, presumably either seeking food or it might just be in the wrong place at the wrong time and be surprised or spooked by a human,” he said. “Invariably, there will be interactions between humans and sharks. Very rarely so though, con-

sidering the numbers of sharks and the numbers of humans in the water at any given time.” The Taronga Conservation Society Australia’s Annual Shark Attack File reported two unprovoked shark encounters in Queensland in 2012, with a total of 14 encounters recorded nationally. Of the 14 cases, two were fatal, 10 resulted in injuries and in two cases there were no injuries to humans. It all comes down to politics, according to Prof Bennett. “It is a political risk removing lines and nets. Woe betide the politician who makes the decision to remove drum lines or nets and then a week later somebody has an interaction with a shark,” he said. “That interaction may well have happened ... if the nets had remained in place but the public perception will not always take that view.” Prof Bennett maintains it is “an extremely rare occurrence for a negative reaction between a human and a shark to occur, extremely rare”. “The common call is that sharks are under much greater threat from humans than humans are from sharks.”

QUEENSLAND Shark Control Program manager Jeff Krause said shark nets and drum lines were strategically placed to reduce the possibility of shark attack for swimmers. “Human safety must come first, and that’s why the government is committed to the shark control program,” he said. “The nets are not in place to indiscriminately cull sharks, rather they are specifically designed to catch resident sharks to reduce the number of potentially dangerous sharks in particular areas.”

Mr Krause said the shark control program was effective in reducing the overall number of sharks in the area, making it a safer place to swim. “Since the start of the program in 1962, there has been one shark fatality at a shark control beach in Queensland,” he said. Mr Krause said sharks are a natural part of the marine environment, but there are ways you can avoid encounters such as swimming and surfing at patrolled beaches and between the flags, leaving the water if a shark is sighted, and not swimming at dusk or near mouths of estuaries, artificial canals and lakes.

TEWANTIN State School students are going to make life a lot easier for hundreds of youngsters in East Timor as they send off more than 1500 shoeboxes, this week. The educational care parcels are sent to the children of Sao Miguel at Raikotu - a school about 30 minutes west of Dili. With the help of Bendigo Bank and Rotary, Sao Miguel was identified as a community school with no help from the Ministry of Education in Timor. On Monday, the students assembled hundreds of educational care parcels that included exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils, all topped off with a personal item from each student to the child opening it at the other end. The 600 shoeboxes collected from Tewantin will join around 900 others from Cooroy and Pacific Paradise State Schools to create a shipment that will change the lives of 1500 kids. Tewantin Share School deputy principal Kerrod Parsons said the school was delighted to continue to play a part in helping create education, thanks to Bendigo Bank and Rotary. “It’s been great for all stu-

turning to working through other coast schools to widen the support of the project. Interest continues to be expressed in bringing some of the Sao Miguel students to state schools on the coast in coming years to advance their learning even further.

NOOSA is leading the way with Australia’s first Food Trail website that aims to bring together local producers and consumers. Developed by Noosa Farmers’ Market’s Shane Stanley, the smartphone-friendly website will allow users to search by produce, producer and market to create a personalised Google map food trail. Supported by Tourism Noosa, the website will allow visitors to track down some of Noosa’s best local produce and make a day of travelling throughout the region visiting local markets and farms. For Shane, farming is all about working together and creating a support network where local farmers can gain knowledge in the industry. “It’s important for people to come together,” he said. “That is why it’s free for producers to register with the website. We want to create networks,” he said. As part of Council’s Rural Future activities, Cr Bolton will host a film and networking night at The J, Noosa Junction, 2 July, from 6.30pm. A series of short films that document RegenAg’s 2013 study tour will be shown on the night. Entry to the networking night is by gold coin donation. Visit www.thej.com.au for more information.

Four depart from Biosphere board By JONATHON HOWARD FOUR more directors of the Noosa Biosphere Limited (NBL) have resigned from the governance board this week, including the highly regarded Dr Leah Barclay. Their resignations have all occurred since Noosa Council announced its intention to replace the NBL model with a management structure from November this year. Category three directors, each representing one of six community sector boards, had been operating under the NBL umbrella since 2008. The directors are Mary-Jane Weld (represented the Environment Sector board since 2009, director since 2011), Dr Leah Barclay (inaugural Cultural Sector board chair in 2008, director since 2010), Kate Crawford (represented the Social Sector board since 2012, director since 2013), and Peter Homan (represented Tourism Noosa, director since 2008). The Noosa Council advised in their recent working party report that Tourism Noosa will no longer be regarded as a biosphere sector board, however, it is expected that the council will move to ensure that this and

Noosa Council handed down the first budget since de-amalgamation last week - pictured are, from left: deputy mayor Bob Abbot, Cr Frank Pardon, Cr Tony Wellington, Cr Sandy Bolton, Cr Joe Jurisevic, Cr Frank Wilkie, planning and infrastructure director Martin Drysdale, community services director Fox Rogers, corporate services director Michael Shave, mayor Noel Playford, CEO Brett De Chastel and executive manager Deb Iezzi.

Mayor praises first Noosa-only budget Noosa Biosphere Limited has lost a further four directors including Dr Leah Barclay (pictured) (inaugural Cultural Sector Board Chair in 2008, Director since 2010). other vacancies are filled temporarily. Dr Leah Barclay labelled the restructure as “completely misguided” and “failed to recognise the value of the community that is at the heart of NBL”. She said “fortunately” a Biosphere Reserve was not defined by its corporate identity or governance structure, but, rather, by “a passionate community of people who are inspired to explore new approaches to the conservation of biological and cultural diversity”. Dr Barclay recently returned from the USA, where she has been working with six UNESCO Biosphere Reserves

in Arizona, California and New Mexico, exploring the value of rich media environments and digital technology in facilitating environmental awareness and engagement. The results from her research will be presented in Europe next month and at the International World Parks Congress in Sydney later this year. Dr Barclay said her resignation would not change her commitment to the Noosa Biosphere Reserve and her mission to connect the region with other like-minded Biosphere Reserves across the world would continue.

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA Council has been praised for delivering a “landmark” first budget during the council’s budget meeting last week. Noosa Council will receive the budget documents during its ordinary meeting at Tewantin tonight (Thursday 26 June). In his opening budget speech, mayor Noel Playford heaped praise on his hard-working staff who he said started with a blank sheet. “It was thanks to the hard work and commitment of our dedicated team that we were able to find so many savings and pass those on to ratepayers,” he said. Cr Playford said Noosa’s

general rates were among the highest in Queensland and it was time for a pause. “Contrary to some predictions there will be no general rate increase for ratepayers in this budget,” he said. Cr Playford outlined a range of savings made by council staff including a combined total of $80,000 saved on mobile phones and electricity costs. He said now was also the time for the council to shrug off the title of a “de-amalgamated council” and move forward as Noosa Council. “Put the past behind us and as an organisation we have a budget and a vision for the future we can forget about being a ‘de-amalgamated council’ or

a ‘new Noosa Council’ instead we are now Noosa Council,” he said. “We can now focus on being the most efficient council in Australia.” Meanwhile, Cr Playford raised the idea of strengthening Noosa’s democratic processes by introducing a ratepayers’ jury panel. The idea was raised during the Cooroy Area Residents Association meeting. Specifics around how the jury would operate, and who would be included on the jury, are yet to be announced. Do you support the idea of a ratepayers’ jury? Give us your thoughts by email to newsdesk@noosatoday.net.au

Who are they?

Copping a spray

PERSONALLY, I wouldn’t want to live in an area where I was dictated to, like being told I was going to have a garden waste bin and had to pay for it whether I wanted it or not. This is not fair government practice. Mark Rose, Cooroy.

I TOTALLY agree with no spraying. We do know that since spraying is being used freely our bees and good insects are disappearing, let alone the impact on the waterways. Stop the spraying. Barb Partridge, Tewantin.

Where does he get off?

EVERYTHING our whole household does is in Noosa or another of the Noosa Council suburbs. We live in Doonan and besides driving through the SSC Council to go to Brisbane or elsewhere we do nothing in any of their suburbs. This has been going on far too long. Realign now and let us pay rates to where we live. Greg Jones, Doonan.

SO, WHERE does Cr Rogerson get off? Has he forgotten that he is ‘an elected member to SCRC by ratepayers’ NOT an elected member of ‘local government’. Cr Rogerson you need to realise how you became a councillor and listen to the voice of those that elected you. Should the process triggered by the EDV move forward then you need to heed the ‘voice of the people’ not as an individual. On too many issues Cr Rogerson voices his own opinion. We should all listen and assess the pros and cons of the value of EDV joining the Noosa Council boundaries and trust the fair consideration by both councils and the minister take the proper route. Let’s acknowledge the will of the people. Graeme Meade, Eumundi.

Wake up IT IS fully agreed by all the recognised climate-change scientists that there has not been any increase in our earth’s temperature for many years. But the CO2 levels have hugely increased. Which would seem to make it crystal clear that neither has anything to do with the other. Now have a back-look at all those who “knew” that our earth was warming rapidly, including the one who confirmed absolutely that the seas would rise enormously, but who purchased a house on the seashore. And the one who told us that we could no longer expect it to rain, so the rivers would dry out and the dams would empty. Then re-check our weather since those “certainties” came at us. Geoff Cass, Tewantin.

Help ’em out YAIR, let ‘em in; they think like we do, eh? Let’s rescue the poor buggers from the Southern ‘boom or bust’ mentality! Steve Stevenson, Noosa.

I AM a Doonan resident and oppose the inclusion. Anyhow, how many residents do the proudly mentioned “80 per cent of respondents” represent? John Nissen, Doonan.

Community of interest

Who benefits? COUNCILLOR Rogerson said that both the Sunshine Coast Council and the Noosa Shire Council would need to benefit from any boundary change. Of course they will. Sunshine Coast will divest themselves of the 80 per cent who do not want to be with them and Noosa will gain an extra 10 per cent who want to be with them. Simple! Chris McDonnell, Doonan.

Supporter I AM totally in favour of Doonan, Eumundi and Verrierdale becoming parts of Noosa Shire, especially if their ratepayers in those areas wish to do so. Why not have the referendum? They seem to gravitate socially and geographically to Noosa! let’s face it, Sunshine Coast Council is too big and harder to administer and who would not want to live in a shire that has the clean environment and Biosphere as the trademark. David Zuric, Sunrise Beach.

Some majority THE EDV group would have you believe that survey results show that more than 80 per cent of the people living in this area want to join the Noosa Council. Lets look at the real facts Of the 6000 people living in EDV, only six per cent completed the survey, with 150 of these people living outside the area (in Brisbane or Noosa), that leaves us with only 380 locals! Of these 380 locals, only four of them (one per cent) were under the age of 29! Sixty per cent of people surveyed were over 60 (which is twice the coast average). This in my opinion is not a good representation of our area. What it does tell me is that 94 per cent of the locals

·

· · ·

couldn’t be bothered with the survey. When asked at the meeting if the rates would be cheaper with the Noosa council, the president of the EDV, Johanne Wright answered “that she had a fair hint that it would be”. This is not good enough! What we have here is The EDV group with their obvious purpose; The surveyors, a mob who are employed by the Noosa council; and The lovely economist, Ted Fitzgerald who admitted to being a good friend of the mayor Noel Playford. The local population doesn’t need this brainwashing and useless propaganda, show us some respect, and we’ll do our talking when the subject is brought up at the next election. Dom Massoni, Verrierdale.

Quite batty IT IS not surprising that those few pepole who speak glowingly about bats, especially the bats who now reside in the Wallace Park area, live elsewhere, some as far away as Sunshine Beach, others at Boreen Point, or Little Cove, or other far away places. It is also not surprising that those residents who reside near to the Wallace Park area are complaining about the dear little creatures, in fact have been compaining since last September when the dear little creatures decided to roost in Wallace Park. During that time we have watched them destroy the natural habitat, push wildlife, including birds (which Wallace Park was once famous for) out of the area, deposit copious amounts of urine and faeces, make horrendous noise day and night, create an unbelievable stench, copulate and populate into a bat colony millions strong, cause damage to cars, tiles, houses, pools and so forth. Yes, they are delightful creatures all right, and they have done a wonderful job at Wallace Park. The interesting thing is that residents in the area who have resided there for more than 11 years cannot recall ever seeing a bat colony in Wallace Park before. We are hoping that they will be relocated, perhaps to a bat lover area, where we will be assured that they will be loved and looked after, or perhaps they may even fly away and never return. PS: I have just returned from a short sojourn in Sydney (they got rid of their bats) where it was a joy to breathe the smogfilled air and have the peace and quiet of a bat-free environment. Kay Fielden, Tewantin.

By JOLENE OGLE IT IS certainly not your everyday lucky door prize, but Drysdale Funerals are excited to give away a pre-paid funeral at their open day on Wednesday 9 July. Drysdale Funerals location manager Christine Sterlson said the unique give-away was valued at $4000 and included everything needed for a funeral including professional fees, coffin and cremation. “The pre-paid Guardian plan is designed to offer peace of mind,” she said. “The winner can choose to add to the package for an additional cost, it is really up to them.” The give-away is part of Drysdale Funerals’ 25 year celebrations and open day, where the community are invited to tour the long-standing funeral home’s grounds. “Not many people know that we are self-sufficient with an onsite morgue and crematorium,” Ms Sterlson said. The open day will also mark the official opening of Drysdale Funer-

LOCAL charity Sunshine Butterflies has received a helping hand from the Bendigo Bank Tewantin in the form of a perfect-fitting sponsorship. Bendigo Bank Tewantin helped Sunshine Butterflies buy six life-sized puppets that will be used as an inclusion tool and resource for the new puppet troupe program. Sunshine Butterflies founder Leanne Walsh said the puppet troupe program had been specifically designed to break down the confusion and misunderstanding surrounding disability as well as helping kids learn about acceptance, understanding and compassion. Earlier this week, Leanne and Wayne took time to pose with the puppets before the performance at Little Lambs Early Learning Centre at Good Shepherd Lutheran College, Noosaville. They stayed to watch and enjoy the performance with 48 youngsters. The puppet show includes sensory activities

Power of auctions AUCTIONS are becoming more popular, with the latest statistics from RP Data showing an increase in the sale method throughout the country. According to the latest data, there has been an eight per cent increase in registered home auctions when compared to last year. A total of 2,216 auctions were scheduled for last week, throughout the country, with 1,787 expected in capital cities. Richardson and Wrench (R&W) Noosa principal Shane McCauley says he’s not surprised with the rise of popularity for auctions. “Auctions do work,” he said. “R&W has specialised in auctions for over 25 years, with record results.” Shane said there were numerous benefits to selling your home through an auction. “An auction is a high-impact approach that attracts the greatest buyer inquiry,” he said. “An auction can also remove the guesswork from pricing your property, as well as any ceiling price; giving you the opportunity to achieve the very highest price for your home.” Shane said an auction sale also removed what was called a scare price, where potential buyers could be discouraged from viewing your property based on the price. “An auction also creates a sense of urgency and removes the procrastination from the process of buying,” he said. “The extra competition can also help drive up the price and leaves the seller in complete control without price disclosure. “Auctions provide an accelerated result that out-performs all other methods of sale.”

Heart of the home AWARD-WINNING interior designer and owner of Di Henshall Interior Design, Di Henshall, has shared some great advice for anyone looking to improve the most important rooms in their home. THE most important rooms in the house are undoubtedly kitchens and bathrooms. The kitchen has and always will be the heart of the home. Everyone, at some point in the day, will congregate to cook, make a drink, chat or have a glass of wine with friends. Relatively new innovations such as soft-close drawers, induction cooking, pull-out pantries, reconstituted stone and steam ovens are now acceptable inclusions in many new kitchens. Trends, such as glass splashbacks, come and go, but good design in a kitchen is long-lasting and a true investment. All the usual suspects are on my list of things to consider: Storage - storage is the most important factor in any design solution. Do you have enough storage - is it the right sort of storage? Standard cupboards are basically useless and space wasters in my opinion - look at drawers, even concealed drawers behind doors, compartmentalised storage for bottles, cans, plates, etc. Consider what you are actually needing to store and then think of the best storage solution for those particular items, e.g. shallow shelves, easily reached, are ideal for cans - not deep pantry shelves where you discover something ‘orrible from the summer of ’05 lurking in the back. Refrigeration - Don’t underestimate how much refrigeration we need in this climate. How many of you have a fridge in the garage? Not exactly the right place to have a fridge!

14 Realestate Lifestyle | Thursday, 26 June, 2014

Dry storage - Don’t get sucked into having a huge pantry that you then fill with everything else other than dry goods! How many of you have pantries that are filled with baskets, crockery, glasses, large pots, flower vases, shopping lists, files, etc. These are not pantry items and should have their own appropriate storage. Unless you are a prolific baker or chef it is much better to store items such as flour, rice and other cereals in the freezer, so weevils and other nasties can’t get at them and they won’t go off. Cooking - There are many pitfalls in selecting the right cooking equipment for you. So get expert advice - so many of the large retailers and companies such as Miele have highly-trained staff that will go through all the elements with you to make sure you get the right equipment for you. Remember, it can be quite difficult to replace cooking equipment, so what you buy should last you the lifetime of the cabinetry - at least 10 years, so get help. Work surfaces - Be sure you allow for enough work surfaces available for ‘plating up’ for dinner parties - if you are that way inclined. And also for frequently used appliances like kettles, toasters and coffee grinders. These are often stored away, but still need a clear place on the benchtop when needed. Benchtop heights should also be considered - the ‘average’ height of 900mm suits the ‘average’ height person, but if you are taller, you may want to adjust the height by 25mm so you are not bending over. Back in the 19th century, bathrooms used to be literally a luxury, and even in the ’50s, some Noosa cottages had

outhouses. Now, even the most modest houses have two bathrooms. Size - the bathroom may well be one of the smallest rooms in the house but so long as it is well planned, using the best materials and fittings you can afford, the bathroom can be a jewel in any house. Different textures, finishes and lighting can be used to create a sophisticated, relaxing space. Lighting - Various lighting options should be considered when planning the bathroom, such as night lights, set down low under cabinetry to give soft ambient light and well-lit mirrors - ever so important when applying make-up. Wall lights or good overhead lighting should be included, that can be switched separately, so you can switch on the right light for the right application. Storage - As in the kitchen, storage in bathrooms can’t be underestimated. The most appropriate storage for toiletries, cosmetics, toilet rolls, hair dryers, shavers etc would be shallow shelves, preferably overhead or to the side of the vanity. Open shelves can be used for towel storage, or better still, plan for towel racks or towel rails for easy reach and ventilation. These should be in easy reach of the shower or the bath for both practical, safety and comfort reasons. Of course the other major consideration is the selection of sanitaryware - but this is such a huge topic, its best left for another time!

Three plays to see THE One Act Play Festival is back again at the Noosa Arts Theatre for its 37th year of unique, fun entertainment. Opening 3 July, the festival will showcase three original plays with different scenarios; Instructions for Two or More Players, The Invitation and The Devil’s Dance. Written by Michiko Parnell, Instructions for Two or More players follows 50-year-old Michael as he nears a mid-life crisis. Chaos ensues when Michael is intent on getting his wife to also admit to a fear of turning 50. The Invitation, by Michael McCormick is a tragic comedy that follows the life of new parents Ester and Tom who seem to live in a continuous cycle of miscommunication and long waits for invitations, until one simple question changes everything: “Where’s the baby?” The final play, The Devil’s Dance, written by councillor Frank Wilkie, tells the tale of an ambitious cop entangled in a corrupt web of deranged power who confronts the aftermath of a heinous crime. The audience is encouraged to vote for the best play, which will receive the Nancy Cato Audience Choice Award, with the winner of this year’s Best Play

Last Paradise screened here LIFE OF BRINE PHIL JARRATT Thursday, 26 June 7pm: Tewantin Noosa RSL: Latin Plus A FEW months back, a Kiwi surfer and film-maker named Clive Neeson contacted me, offering a screening of his film, Last Paradise, to support one of our charities at the Noosa Festival of Surfing. Unfortunately, as we were only a couple of weeks out from the festival, we couldn’t build in another show, but Clive generously offered us a short tribute film for his friend, Al Byrne, the legendary Kiwi surfer/shaper who had just died tragically in Bali, and came to Noosa to introduce it. That was my first meeting with Clive Neeson, although we had many mutual friends around the world. I was impressed by his genuine passion for the surfing life, depicting it on film and protecting our oceanic environment. He was a true believer, if ever I’d met one, but I didn’t know the half of it. He gave me a DVD of Last Paradise and said that he hoped to show it in Noosa in the future. What with work and travel and a few good swells here and there, I only got around to watching Clive’s film last week. It was not what I was expecting. There are a couple of things about a surf flick that put me off from the get-go. One is an overearnest narration by the film-maker, another is a barrage of self-serving, uncontested claims to have been the first to surf here and design that, and so on. Last Paradise has both, but surprisingly I found myself riveted virtually from the first frame despite this. The first thing that grabbed me about Clive’s film was the superb quality of the cinematography, even though the narrative was tracing a 45year journey that began in the safari camps of Africa. You would expect such a story to be illustrated with faded snapshots and shaky home movies, but Clive’s parents were wildlife cinematographers, and he and his brother grew up holding lens caps, and moved seamlessly into shooting their own adventures with long, quality lenses. The second thing that grabbed me was that Clive knows how to weave a story, draw a line across a very broad canvas. From threads that include the birth of extreme sports, coming of age in rural New Zealand, nuclear physics and climate change, he somehow holds your attention and brings it all back to the core experiences of a bunch of mates who live for the glide in all its forms, and happen to include the likes of bungee guru AJ Hackett, Al Byrne and Kiwi surf legend Kevin Jarrett. Once you get into its rhythm, and suspend disbelief over some of its more extravagant claims the Kiwis did not invent the snowboard or bungee jumping! - this is a really accomplished and likeable film. Noosa resident and veteran surfboard shaper Mike Davis will introduce Last Paradise at The J tonight on Saturday at 7.30pm, with

Long lunch with Macca, Crusty and Moggs It’s always a pleasure to hang out with Bob McTavish, who was the unofficial mayor of Noosa when Noel Playford was still in nappies. (Now there’s an image to conjure.) Seems like every couple of months we get chucked together in one arena or another, most recently at the Sydney Writers Festival in May, where we enjoyed a convivial two bottle lunch before our panel discussion and managed to convince the others to throw a group brown-eye in the general direction of the festival committee. There will be no need for any such warm-up when the legendary surfer/shaper, who first rode Noosa’s points with Pa Bendall in 1961, returns to the Coast next month for the Board Meeting’s “Legends of Surf Long Lunch” at Alex Surf Club. With three hours of fine wine on offer, Macca and I can guarantee our tongues will be sufficiently lubricated to keep the gags flowing. Fellow panellist Mark Warren, former pro hero and Bronzed Aussie and still super-fit in his 60s, might be harder to corrupt, but he can drive us home. This lunch, which debuted last year, also includes a huge surfboard and memorabilia auction, great food, great vibe, all hosted by our mate John “JC” Charlton, and all proceeds go to local disabled kids. It will be a great afternoon of fun and

conviviality, all in a good cause. Alex Surf Club, noon-4pm, Friday 25 July. Tickets $100 a head, includes three-course meal, three hours of drinks. For bookings, phone Glenn on 0410 549364. Mad Monk miscues again The Prime Minister of Australia has been known to make a nuisance of himself on a soft pop-out at South Steyne on a quiet day, but to call him a committed surfer is a bit of a stretch. But Tone the Bone will do whatever it takes to get that picture op on the 6pm newscast or the front page, whether it means donning hard hat, lycra, frilly apron, budgie smugglers or carefully unbranded wettie, so it came as no surprise that the Prime Minister’s office should have organised a longboard with the presidential seal on it for the PM to present to US President Barack Obama at their recent meeting. What did come as a surprise was that it was a board with cred, a Barry Bennett custom, organised by the great man’s son and factory manager Greg Bennett. The president was quoted as saying he “loved it”, although even Blind Freddie knows that Barry O is in fact a committed body womper who grew up carving high lines on a hand plane on the windward side of Oahu. Perhaps a pair of his own, only slightly soiled sluggos would have been more to the point. Or even a stuffed koala.

The Thynne and Dickinson families, who have previously owned and operated nine hotels, resorts, islands, motels, boats and hospitality training and job placement schools along the east coast of Queensland, are the proud owners of the restaurant with one of the best views in town. Meals include freshly shucked oysters, an iced bucket full of delicious prawns, Thai style salads, as well as fresh fish and tender steaks, all of which can be enjoyed from the club’s all weather deck that offers stunning views of Noosa Main Beach. The restaurant is available for large group bookings or a romantic dinner for two, with an extensive menu available and a great atmosphere. General manager Steven Thynne and executive chef Campbell McClelland have combined their skills

to deliver great service through ongoing staff training, as well as quality meals that focus on flavour, presentation, and the use of fresh ingredients Steven said it was always great to hear positive feedback about the family-owned restaurant. Typical customer feedback collected via forms include comments such as excellent food, menu selection, fast service, and that the restaurant is suited to families, couples and group bookings, he said. Home today Make the most of outdoor areas WINTER is definitely here, but you don’t have to avoid your outdoor area during these cooler months. Accolade Weather Screens have been providing customers with weatherproofing solutions for their outdoor areas for more than 12 years. Built to go around your existing patio, pergola, deck or alfresco area, each screen is custom made to suit any style or budget. Accolade was awarded an Australian patent for developing an innovative alternative to PVC cafe blinds. Using the same material as cafe blinds, the insert is stretched into a custom aluminium frame giving

the appearance of glass but the added safety of being shatter proof. Accolade Weather Screen owner Julian Menzel said the effect is so real that many of his customers can’t believe it’s not really glass. For ease of use, a unique tracking system offers either a sliding or bi-fold option for entry to your yard, while hinged and French-style doors are also available. An Accolade weather screen could be the perfect solution for weatherproofing your outdoor area by providing shelter from wind and rain. The screens give the effect of being a permanent structure,

but you can simply slide the screens away for an open outdoor environment. “Customers want to use their outdoor area all year round,” Julian said. “We listened and we provide an innovative solution.” As well as clear PVC, the screens can also be inserted with sun block-out mesh, tinted PVC or insect membranes, giving customers more option and possibilities for creating their year-round outdoor living space. Make the most of your outdoor area this winter. Phone Accolade Screens on 3102 1186 for a free measure and quote or visit www.accoladescreens. com.au to view their gallery.

Sunshine Rebels reign By ANITA ANDERSON

The Dolphins mean business with a great weekend of rugby before a three-week break.

Enthusiasm ahead of break THE final round before a three-week hiatus for the upcoming school holidays saw a final rush of enthusiasm from players for this week’s games. Training will still take place as usual for many teams, and no rest for our Stingrays representative players gearing up for the State Championships to be held on the Gold Coast over the holiday period in two week’s time.

U6 Reds 65 - Grammar 70 JAX jinked, Jaxon jived, Manu manoeuvred and Darcy dived, Stirling stepped and Angus attacked while Conor cavorted and Harry........ Harassed. Rugby purists sighed in relief as they witnessed a fast-paced and high scoring match with silky skills and deft defending on show. Darcy, Jax and Jaxon all got their first tries of the season and Harry gets special mention for dotting down eight of his own. Domino’s Pizza Player Of The Match was Jaxon Peermamode.

U8 Reds 5 - Brothers Red 70 IT was a tough slog early but the side improved as the game went on. Will led the boys well having his best game to date taking the ball up straight hard and fast, good scrums, good passes and a great show of sportsmanship. Oscar worked hard putting on some good tackles, and did his best to defend, covering lots of ground. Byron was courageous doing his best to clear out the big

forwards, took some big tackles and threw a great pass to Joch who made good ground. Joch showed fight taking the ball up, clearing out and running well-timed defensive runs to make tackles and save further tries. Kaleb tried all angles to get through with arcing runs heading towards both wings only to hit brick walls and also chased hard in defence. Mack did his best to find a gap to be tackled, go to ground and pass the ball back to be our Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match. Finnbar also had a fantastic game. Very strong text-book tackling found its mark all game, unstoppable runs forward making the most ground for the reds finally resulting in our only try.

U9 Reds 50 - Grammar 30 GRAMMAR started very hard and were well in at the breakdown, playing the first five minutes in the side’s half, but the side fought hard in defence and that resulted in them getting the turnover to race away for the first try. The game then turned into a battle around the breakdown with both teams engaging in a very physical war. Defence was superb, allowing the backs to counter attack at will. Try scorers were Jackson three, two to Mack and one each to Bailey, Fletcher, Jack, Kye and Oliver. Domino’s Pizza Player Of The Match - Fletcher.

U10 Reds 65 - USC 60 ANOTHER wonderful and determined game of rugby from the U10 Reds this

week. Tries scored by Sabyr (4), Billy (4), Max (2) and Jess (1). Great conversions again from Flynn. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match went to Corey Rae for some amazing tackles.

U10 Fins 0 - MFAC 38 FLINDERS had all the momentum from the start and dominated the first half, scoring five tries and taking full advantage of the Fins who were caught off their guard. In a real show of strength and courage, the Fins were a match for the opposition in the second half who were made to work much harder for their one score due to incessant heroic tackling from the Fins, notably Ashton, Lachie, Ethan, Harrison, James, Jarrah and Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match Soren Mannsen.

U11 Noosa 14 - USC 14 THE Under 11s showed just how much they progressed this season as a team with a gutsy draw against a tough Uni team. Olly left his mark on his last game for the team this season with some bullocking runs in the forwards with Alex and Max working hard to clear out at the rucks. In the backs, Hamish linked well with the hard running duo of Jonah and Matt in midfield. The teamwork from the boys in defence was excellent the whole match and forced Uni to really work for their two tries. Tries to Jonah and Matt. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match was Max Waterworth.

THE Noosa Eagles teams went head to head this week with Under-7 Black defeating Under-7 Gold - 7 - 0. The Noosa Blacks were on fire with Sammy Poulton (black) scoring a goal in the first two minutes, Bella Hilligers (gold) let her strong skills kick in as she stood her ground in the backline providing a great defence. She gave Alaska Rosenkranz (black) a run for his money working him hard to score his four goals for the game. After first half as goalie Eamon Shamansky (black) came out strong with a near miss then scoring a goal straight through the middle, while Jaimen Slavin (black) took one all along the side, running up the field to score a sensational goal. Xavier Attard (gold) and Joel Fitzgerald (gold) did a fantastic job in goals defending many attempts and they did exceptionally well to only let seven goals through and Bonnie Boyes (gold) had a great game in attack providing constant pressure on Noosa Blacks defence. Sammy Poulton (black) and Isaac

Benjamin (black) both stood their ground in goals. Congratulations to Alaska Rosenkranz (black ) and Bella Hilligers (gold) this week for taking home the encouragement award from their respective coaches. U12 Noosa Gold played Buderim Ninjas on Saturday, and despite a courageous effort went down 3-0. Noosa’s defence kept the pressure on with Aiden Hawke and Cole Suter doing a great job, but the Ninjas were too strong on the day. Goalkeeper Jay Medhurst was named Player of the Match for another fantastic effort, stopping a number of the Ninjas attempts. The under 13s played an exciting game against Caloundra at Good Shepherd on Saturday and were narrowly defeated 1-0. Noosa’s strong defence with Kate Hamilton, Maddie Simpson, Jake Jenkins and goalie Logan Curtis ensured Caloundra worked very hard for their goal while Noosa also had several close attempts to score but were unsuccessful. Noosa’s player of the week is striker Madeline White for her fantastic efforts on the day.

AN interesting afternoon of touch this week saw games played for final positioning on the ladder in the lead-up to Grand Finals. In the only knockout semi final NDSHS 8s Blue were too strong for St Teresa’s Black with Pearl, Kalen and Mikaela having great games. SBSHS 16s put in a mighty effort before going down to eventual winners Sunshine Rebels. Giverny, Abby and Tyla played strongly for their teams. NDSHS 8s Boys came out on top over ABL2 Driving School, Luca and Taylah were standouts in the match. The Under 10s games showed how much improvement these teams have made during the season with some great touch being played. Cool Runnings took the points against Blazers with Harley, Ben and Pedro having outstanding games. Purple Panthers couldn’t quite match Maroons this week (maybe

the NRL Maroons need a few pointers from our boys). Harry, Maddie and Parker showed great skill. Twisters and Good Shepherd played a great game with Lilliana, Charlie and Elle leading the way. Wrapping up the afternoon results with the Under 12s, Banana Splits had a hard-fought win over Purple Storm. Shaylee, Ruby and Georgia produced great games. Good Shepherd was gallant in defeat against the Saints with Mogan, Tamatoa and Chloe giving outstanding performances for their team-mates. That Cool Team and Steppers played well with That Cool Team taking the win. Pearl, Noah and Emily all produced mighty efforts. As we close in on the end of another successful season, a big thank you must go out to all of our referees. Their effort and dedication each and every week is appreciated. Until the next touchdown...

Ladies off to great start POMONA BOWLS PLENTY of action at the Club during the past week with the ladies playing the first round of Pennants at Albert Club against Tin Can Bay with one win and one loss. A good start ladies - good luck this Monday against Cooloola Coast at Tin Can Bay Club. Men’s Jackpot Pairs was another successful event - however fortunes did not go Pomona’s way and it was won by an out of town team. Wednesday Ladies Open Fours played with plenty of competition amongst the teams. Congratulations to R. McAnnelly and her team from Tewantin-Noosa with two wins +18 from runners-up Val Robertson and team (Albert) with two wins +16. Third place went to the Pomona team skipped by Fay Beadnell and in fourth position Ann Hudson and her team from Tin Can Bay. The last round winner was the Cooloola Coast team skipped by Tina Anderson. Regrettably Thursday Neilsen’s mixed pairs was cancelled due to rain. Friday Twilight Bowls saw plenty of action on the green with the big first prize going to Norm Walmsley and skip Don Mallett. John Davies and Daryl Millar hit their straps to take out the runners-up prize. - Hidden Jack NOOSA HEADS BOWLS THE Sunshine Coast District Men’s Pennant season isn’t far off, and to be ready for the first round action in early August, the Noosa Heads selec-

tors have organised a series of trial games each Saturday to get the teams settled in. This year Noosa will field sides in Divisions 1, 3, and 5. Ray McComb and Les James had a narrow win over Bill Burkitt and Ron Wallish in their veterans pairs semi-final last week, and will go into next Saturday’s final against Bob King and Joe Pantry, who scored a solid victory over Stewart Black and Ralphe Rickman in the other semi. Tuesday pairs was won, again, by David Deane and George Manera. Runners-up prize went to Geoff Lewis and Ric McDonald. Wednesday ladies triples winners were Debbie Austin, Jeanette Emery and Beryl Small over the trio of Judith Boakes, Jan Zemler and Margaret Christie. Friday Open Jackpot Pairs went to Mal Lloyd and Ron Wallish, with a couple of young blokes called Kevin Maguire and Bert Wansley taking runners-up. Saturday triples winners were Graeme Boustead, Frank Turton and Tassie visitor Eileen Brough. Pairs winners were Et Kellett and Sharyn Briggs. - The Chalker COOROY BOWLS DID you know that you can play Aussie rules, skittles, darts and golf using bowls? These were some of the novelty games and skill builders played on Sunday for the Community Open Day. Thanks needs to go to the members who supported this event and to the community mem-

bers who turned up to sign on. Club membership is steadily growing and is now standing at 150. We have a full green of players for our Ladies Day (formerly President’s Day) on Thursday and clubs near and far are showing their support by sending teams. Next month sees the commencement of Winter Suns (the 1st and 3rd Sunday). This will be a short competition where teams and positions will be randomly drawn and individual scores will accumulate. Friday Social will re-commence from 2pm every Friday. This is a great time for beginners to learn skills and have a casual game of bowls. Numbers on the greens on Tuesdays and Saturdays are well represented. Members from nearby clubs are joining us to show their support and are enjoying the friendship and camaraderie. We would like to thank them. - Julie Ainscough TEWANTIN NOOSA BOWLS THE Ladies’ Fiesta Fours was held on Thursday 19 June, sponsored by Laguna Estate. Once more the day drew many bowlers from the region and quite a few from outside the region, including bowlers from Murgan and Bribie Island. The winners were; Y. Walsh, D. Read, B. Balchin and M Clayton from runner-up A. McGill’s team, third were D. Austin’s team and fourth L. Thorpe’s team. The round winner was E. Kunst.

Tuesday (17 June) and a visit from Central Queensland District and Sunshine Coast District featured some of our lady bowlers. All up there were 12 Rinks of four’s (96 Bowlers). M. Jane, L. Wall, B. Tolley and V. Hayes winning. First runners-up were K. Simmons, V. King, J. Lonie and M. Carte. Second runners-up were C. Johnston, R. Watts, C. Turpin and M. Callow. Sunshine District men’s and ladies pennant season is fast approaching with the draws now up on club boards. It is great to see so many bowlers wanting to take part in club teams and selectors face uphill battle to select teams again. Remember if you’re thinking about taking up playing or you want to refresh your skills the club has coaching sessions on Saturdays from 9am. For more details contact the club on (07) 5449 7155.

Beach run can mean Ultra fun By JOLENE OGLE FOR many of us, the thought of running 80kms is enough to make you lose your breath, but for the affectionatelynamed NUTRs, it’s just a training run. Tomorrow night, the Noosa Ultra and Trail Runners (NUTRs) will set off from Caloundra beach and run throughout the night, finishing at Noosa Spit just in time for an 8am barbecue breakfast. NUTRs founder Andy Bowen said running on the beach at night can be a beautiful experience with the moon

and stars lighting the way. Founded 18 months ago, the NUTRs group offers runners the opportunity to train with friends while enjoying great views. “The goal of the group is to encourage people of all levels to get active outdoors and for them to appreciate what they can achieve,” Andy said. “Since the group started, all members have exceeded their own expectations, running further than they had previously thought possible, got healthier and, importantly,

made new friends.” Andy said it was amazing what people could do if given the right encouragement and motivation. “It blows me away when I look at how far some of our members have come in such a short time, many of whom had never run only 18 months ago,” he said. The NUTRs team is running throughout the night to support local runner, Harriet Smith, as she prepares to represent Australia in the World Short Course Mountain Running Championships in Italy.

“Harriet has gone from strength to strength this year as she has focused on trail and mountain races, picking up a number of wins and a course record at the gruelling Mt Glorious mountain race,” Andy said. The Caloundra to Noosa beach run is open to anyone and if 80kms is a little beyond your current training level, you can join the NUTRs at any point along the way. Details of the event can be found on the group Facebook page through www.nutrs.com.au.

NUTRs founder Andy Bowen and Harriet Smith are ready to tackle the 80km beach run.

THE Fiona Winter/PJ Burns Noosa Tigers sit two games clear in second position on the QAFL North division ladder after a resounding 40 point win at their home ground, last Saturday. It what was a physically gruelling and high standard match and it was the home side’s dominance after half time that sealed the victory. It front of a huge home town crowd, where past players from all over the country gathered, the tigers had to turn a 20 point deficit half way through the second stanza into a favourable outcome which they were able to do impressively. While the Roos headed to the main break with a two goal advantage, after half time the pressure and intent of the Noosa boys went up a gear. In fact, the Tigers banged on seven goals and seven behinds in the premiership quarter

Captain Peter Trompf in his 100th game for the Noosa Tigers PHOTO: JORDAN CULLEN and should have been a lot further in front. However they never looked like losing in the final quarter as they came away 40 point victors, gained some breathing space in terms of ladder position and thrilled the past players as they cheered inspirational captain Peter Trompf in his 100th game and sang the team song for all to join in. Noosa were relentless after half time and their poise and ball sharing among each other was a treat to watch.

They had good players everywhere; Peter Trompf in the ruck was outstanding in his milestone game, Ryley Buntain terrific at centre half back, while in-form Tigers Shane Davis, Jack Hendrie, Seb Rogers and Jai Fitzpatrick continue to find the footy and put the Noosa side to advantage. Young Jake Fulton and Dillon Murray were influential in the win, while old-timers Brett “Angel” Duke and James Gellie were always terrific focal points up forward.

Also great to see champion rover Cubby Isles back and finding plenty of the footy as usual. All in all, just a top day at the local football with the Noosa boys letting no one down at all. So as the old saying goes “Who put the Roo in the stew? Noosa Do!” Special thanks to guest speaker Essendon champion Mark Harvey who was nothing short of sensational across the entire weekend. His football insight and stories surrounding his playing and coaching career but more importantly his socialising skills will be remembered by those who meet him for a long time. A big thanks also to Aaron “AJ” Jaques for his efforts in organising our annual past players day. Very enjoyable to say the least. It’s Caloundra at home this Saturday in what is once again a must see encounter with official AFL immortal (Triple Brownlow Medallist) and South Melbourne great Bob Skilton as our special guest at our President’s Lunch. GO TIGERS!

Melbourne Cup visits Noosa By JONATHON HOWARD EVERY year Australia stops to witness one of the world’s greatest horse races, the Melbourne Cup, and this year the coveted cup will be visiting Noosa in October. The $175,000, 18-carat gold Emirates Melbourne Cup is currently touring around Australia before the cup returns to Melbourne for the big race on Tuesday, 4 November. Noosa’s Cindy LeBrun, at Integrated Animal Health, tendered to have Noosa included in the cup’s tour. “Locally based international company Integrated Animal Health

are very proud to be hosting the tour in Noosa,” she said. Ms LeBrun said it was a chance for the whole community to get a glimpse of one of Australia’s most converted trophies. “The tour will include visits to local schools, retirement villages, charity luncheon at Ricky’s River Bar and Restaurant, the Noosa Heads Surf Club and more,” she said. The 2014 Emirates Melbourne Cup will return to Melbourne on Monday, 27 October, kicking off the celebrations leading into the Melbourne Cup Carnival. The running of the 154th Emirates Melbourne Cup is on Tuesday 4 November 2014.

Winter months used wisely BETWEEN THE FLAGS RON LANE

FOR all surf clubs the winter months are for maintenance of equipment and planning for the summer season ahead. At Peregian club they plan to have a group in training at Noosa for their bronze medallions and later in the year fifteen cadets will travel to the Gold Coast for a season-planning and surfing seminar. “A trip like this,” said Youth Development Officer Rod Witham, “is great for building team spirit. “They have the opportunity to discuss plans and above all formulate ideas that they can put into effect next season. “Also they have the chance to gain further surf experience by visiting different beaches. “This of course is a vital ongoing part of any young lifesavers training.” Also on the calendar is Sunday, 6 July. “This day we will start board racing and surf swims for all active members. This will serve to keep us together during winter and will also help to build up our membership. Present membership is sixty and we will be making a big effort to reach the hundred next season,” said Witham. “To start 2014/15 season we plan to hold in August, an Etiquette Night for our cadets.

“This is always a fun night and we sometimes invite a guest speaker to talk about their experiences in life’’. All in all it looks like a busy productive winter for lifesavers at Peregian. Another project that is performed annually during the winter months is to overhaul Jet Rescue Boats. All winter programs are important, however this is one that gets priority for it is these high powered crafts that are primarily designed for rescue work in cyclonic seas. At present Jet Boat 3 - the boat that covers the area from Teewah to Mudjimba - is in Brisbane where all necessary tests are being conducted. Chris Doney of the Noosa club is the Sunshine Coast Coordinator for Jet Boat 3. “At present we have some twenty crew personal on roster and over the years we have built up a very proud record,” Doney a veteran of some twelve years’ service said. “In the last five (years) we have focused on getting more of the younger members involved in our service. “This has resulted in two of our recruits making history in the Jet Boat Service nationwide. “One was Jess Dunnett a member of the club at Dickey Beach - Jess made her mark by becoming the first ever female member to qualify for the skippers’ certificate. “The second was James Widdicombe of the Noosa club, who at 21-years-of-age became the youngest member to qualify as a skipper. “The cadet youth program which was started

at Noosa has proved to be a big success, with others now undergoing full training.” To give some indication as to the type of patrolling that is sometimes required of the Jet Boat Service, the majority of bravery awards that were presented at last year’s Black Tie National Awards Evening in Sydney, were awarded to members of the Jet Boat Service. This is definitely a branch of Life Saving that is not for the faint hearted. Understandably these winter overhauls are vital.

This Saturday the Noosa Surf Club will proudly host the after party for the Walk for Breast Cancer Ladies. The walk is from Coolum to Noosa; there are two walks one starting at 8am which covers a distance of 20km and the other a 10km walk starting at 9am. “This is the seventh year that we have been involved,” said Surf Club manager Anton Mogg, “…and we are always here to help.”
