DARRYN Lyons’ controversial Giddyup billboard has been replaced with another just as loud – a giant pitch to keep Jetstar at Avalon, complete with the Geelong mayor in lurid red sunglasses. ‘Avalon. Don’t let this one depart’, the sign exhorts motorists passing the Hovells Creek billboard near Lara. The new push to boost Jetstar business at Avalon follows an $11 million package to keep the beleaguered Qantas discount carrier using the airport until April. “It’s as simple as use it or lose it. Geelong businesses, families, anyone who travels to and from Sydney, give Avalon some love!” he said. The airport, considered vital to Geelong’s economic future, has been under siege in recent months. The Independent revealed last month that Jetstar’s local patronage had fallen from 60 to 20 per cent since inception. The airline has reduced services since its inception, with Sydney now the only destination available from Avalon. The airport has also shed 800 Qantas maintenance jobs, plans for a $50 million rail spur line remain in limbo and an international carrier is yet to materialise. Jetstar Australia and New Zealand chief David Hall last week told Gee-

His use-it-or-lose-it warning echoed Committee for Geelong chair Dan Simmonds’ call in the Independent for greater local patronage of the airline. Cr Lyons said he would email local businesses, urging them to switch from Tullamarine to Avalon for Sydney flights. “If we want to keep Jetstar at Avalon we need to fill flights. At the moment Jetstar has five flights to Sydney a day,” he said. “I urge anyone planning a trip to Sydney or who has a stopover in Sydney to support our local airport – it’s a short drive and parking’s a breeze. “Ideally, we’d like to see more flights to more locations but in order to attract more services we need to show the demand is there.” “We’re all in this together, so we need to support our local industry to create and retain jobs, attract new businesses and prosper overall.”

Double Take DO WE really have such trouble recognising celebrities in Geelong? On rock quiz TV show Spicks and Specks last week, Scared Weird Little Guys’ Rusty Berther revealed he was in a local hot chicken shop only days earlier when a fellow customer called him Ricky. “Rusty,” he corrected the man. No, Ricky, the man insisted, Ricky Gervaise! Not to be outdone, fellow panellist Uncanny X-Men’s Brian Mannix said he too was mistaken in the same shop for someone else – SBS movie reviewer Margaret Pomeranz!

The only problem is that it reads like “How ... is ... Car” from behind because the words ‘Safe’ and ‘Your’ are in yellow on a white bumper bar, making them almost impossible to read without exteme tailgating. Which makes the answer to the rhetorical slogan: Safer Than Yours. CONTROVERSY continues as City Hall looks to offload Old Geelong Gaol, in line with the recommendations of a Jeff Kennet-led company. But the job might be a little harder after Channel 7 brekkie show Sunrise sent Geelong gal Rebecca Maddern home to report on the gaol – and she came up with enough ghost stories to shiver anyone’s timbers. Ghost tours are a regular feature at the gaol, the memory

of which even sent chills down the spine of Pentridge H Division toughnut Chopper Read who spent time early in his career at the old Myers St Hilton. Hopefully the tales don’t spook prospective developers. ACTIVIST group Surf Coast Air Action was proudly spruiking its human sign on the beach last weekend, calling for the closure of Anglesea’s coal mine and power station. Over 500 attended, the group claimed in a press release to publicise the event. Trouble is, the release’s accompanying photograph clearly showed only 300 present. To avoid casting doubt on anyone’s numeracy, we’ll just call it a rounding error.

LOCAL property owners are less likely to make a loss on resale than in Gold Coast, according to a new industry report. RP Data’s Pain and Gain report ranked the Barwon region in the top 10 for resale value, while Gold Coast topped the list for losses with 37 per cent of properties selling for less than original purchase price. Only 6.3 per cent of units resold in the Barwon region recorded a gross loss, the report revealed. The national gross loss aver-

age for all home resales in the first quarter of 2013 was 12.7 per cent. “Lifestyle regions showed the largest proportion of loss making resales,” the report said. “Regional areas associated with the resources sector recorded very low rates of loss making resales.” The report said almost a third of all resales doubled the original purchase price. Properties purchased before the global financial crisis were

more likely to make a profit upon resale, the report found. “For homes purchased after January 2008 the propensity to make a loss on the sale climbs substantially. Of those, 25 per cent recorded a loss.” Properties held for an average of less than five years were more likely to make a loss. Properties held for almost 10 years recorded a profit. On average, properties took just over 15 years to double their original purchase prices, the report said.

Our ABC ‘facing chop’ By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG’S new ABC bureau faces the chop less than 12 months after it opened. Federal Government cuts of $70 million for the ABC have put the future of the Geelong bureau and its two journalists under a cloud. The previous Labor government established the bureau in August under an 18-month contract. State shadow regional minister Jacinta Allan lashed out at the Canberra funding cuts. Ms Allan said ABC regional radio played an important role for commu-

Call to back city’s bureau nities “as an emergency broadcaster and a provider of local community information and news”. She called on other state MPs to stand up to Canberra’s “attacks” on regional ABC services. “The ABC provides a vital service to regional Victoria yet Tony Abbott is planning to take the Liberal axe to it,” she said in a written statement. A spokesperson for Ms Allan said: “We’re unsure what will happen for the Geelong post but obviously there’s concern if it does get the chop”.

The Federal Government cut $43.5 million from the ABC in its 2014 budget. An ongoing review, Project 21, has flagged another $70 million in savings by outsourcing programming and a one-off $90 million windfall from the sale of production facilities. The Geelong bureau opened with a clutch of Labor politicians, including Senator Kate Lundy and local MPs Richard Marles and Darren Cheeseman, welcoming its arrival. The bureau was financed with $227,000 in Labor funding.

Prior to the arrival of the ABC Geelong relied on Melbourne, Ballarat and Warrnambool for the ABC’s radio news service. The Government’s communications spokesman in the Senate, Mitch Fifield, rejected claims the ABC would have to cut programs under the funding review. “Any suggestion at all that popular programs or services are at risk because of budget savings are completely absurd,” he said. Senator Fifield has defended the review, arguing public broadcasters are unaccountable for their spending, unlike commercial networks.

In brief Christmas spending A $2 MILLION spending spree on Christmas decorations will go ahead after Geelong’s council approved the initiative this week. Mayor Darryn Lyons used his casting vote to keep confidential details of the spending, including $500,000 for a floating Christmas tree and $1.5 million for lighting.

Bakery robbed TWO ROBBERS used a sledgehammer to smash their way into a Lara bakery before one threatened female bakers with a knife, according to police. A Victoria Police spokesperson said the balaclava-clad culprits escaped on foot “with an amount of cash” after the robbery about 1am Monday.

Station access A $7.3 MILLION upgrade of disabled access to Geelong Railway Station is underway, Victoria’s Public Transport Minister has announced. Terry Mulder said the work would include new lifts, stairs and an emergency access ramp.

Braking news A NEW TAC campaign will steer Geelong motorists toward cars with self-braking technology. A TAC spokesperson said “auto emergency braking” was already included in 50 car models available at Geelong dealerships.

YEAR four and five students from Anglesea Primary School prepared for battle this week. They gathered at Geelong College’s middle school to defend their two-year hold on the Challenge Cup against 11 primary schools

from around the region. The annual day of art, technology and maths activities asks students to put their brains to work to solve a major mystery problem. Principal Andrew Barr said the challenge had since 1994 aimed to create learning opportunities for

students from around the region. “We’re excited to welcome this group of curious and creative learners to our college and to see how they tackle the activities, particularly the major problem. “Opportunities to learn in different ways and outside of the normal learn-

ing environment can help to develop brain function and confidence.” Mr Barr said the challenge had a competitive element, with placegetters acknowledged in each of the specific activities and the overall winning school taking home The Geelong College Challenge Cup, which Anglesea won in 2012 and 13.

Health shake-up ‘to cost jobs’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN MEDICARE Locals in Geelong, Ballarat and Warrnambool plan a merger to tender for Federal Government’s new Primary Health Network. Geelong Medicare Local chief Jason Trethowan said the merger would result in corporate job losses as part of a Government push for greater efficiency. “The merger won’t accommodate all corporate staff under the

consolidation because some parts of the current organisations will be centralised,” Mr Trethowan said. “But there will be more job creation opportunities down the track for program support staff. “This is a disruption to our work in the Medicare Local but we believe we’ll be able to promote more opportunities to work across the whole region as a result.”

The previous Labor government established Medicare Locals, mostly from GP associations, to fill gaps in heatlh care services. The coalition’s Primary Health Network will serve a similar purpose but across a wider area, covering the Barwon, Grampians and Great South Coast regions from July. The change follows a government trend toward larger regional organisations for tourism and waste collection sectors.

Mr Trethowan said the heads of the three Medicare Locals were in discussions with each other and local stakeholders in preparation for the move. “The Federal Government will release a tender for its Primary Health Network around November and we should have greater clarity of what it entails then. However, we’re suggesting the Government brings the process forward to give us more time to effect the transition from the

Medicare Locals and give staff greater confidence in their job futures.” Mr Trethowan said multiple locations for the organisation were possible, given the size of the new network. “State Government should invest in the new networks to ensure an equitable distribution of health care resources into local communities,” he said. “It would also result in better coordination between state and

federal health policies. Health does bring a lot of duplication.” Mr Trethowan said successful local health initiatives such as a HealthPathways website would remain under the new arrangements. “We won’t lose sight of the local work we’re doing but it will enable us to place more emphasis on rural health issues and make wider connections with local hospitals and health professionals.”

Vandalised church hopes for return of support at fair Flasher attracts By EMILY IANNELLO police attention VANDALISM and wear and tear on Geelong’s historic Christ Church are driving a Fruits of Labour Fair to help finance repairs. The church, a long-time provider of meals for Geelong’s homeless, hopes the community will return the generosity. Member Ruth Christian said the church had an “an enormous restoration bill”. “It will cost over $3 million to repair.” Vandals had destroyed four of the church’s original panelled windows despite their protective mesh, Ms Christian said. “The building costs a lot to keep going and now we need to do something to protect our other windows. “I guess you could say the fair is the icing on the cake for our maintenance issues.” Ms Christian said the fair, in the church’s McKillop St parish school hall from 10am to 3pm on 12 July, would have live entertainment, sales fo handmade products and books, a woodwork shop, food and “lots of handmade socks and beanies”. Community donations to the fair had been heartening, she said. “We’re also happy to take orders for our handmade items. We just need to make sure the church itself keeps going.”

GEELONG desperately needs emergency accommodation for single parents escaping dangerous or stressful domestic situations, according to Parents without Partners Community Services (PWPCS). Secretary Barbara Schembri said up to 100 parents and 200 children needed accommodation in the region. “There’s always been a need for this in Geelong because there’s only one such emergency facility, run by the Salvos,” she said. “Geelong’s going to be tough for many people, with companies closing and jobs going. There will only be more unemployment

and families getting stressed.” Ms Schembri said Geelong was attractive to single parents for its cheaper cost of living than metropolitan areas. “Single parents will often move to cheaper areas but they’re terribly disadvantaged when it comes to private renting – they’re at the bottom of the scale – and there’s not much government rental available.” Ms Schembri said PWPCS planned to set up an emergency accommodation facility to cope with the demand. “We’ll look at a range of options, perhaps by purchasing a motel or caravan park with cabins, or a building. We’ll apply for grants because we probably need $1 million.”

The organisation has opened an op shop with a difference in Edols St, North Geelong, to assist with fundraising. Manager Lyn Hutcheon said the PWP Op Shop sold unpriced items. “Make us an offer,” she said. Customers were already arriving despite its recent opening. “There aren’t that many Geelong-only op shops left, most of them are part of larger or national organisations,” Ms Hutcheon said. “All our staff are volunteers and no money raised goes to administration. It will all go towards establishing our Geelong emergency accommodation.”

By NOEL MURPHY INVISIBLE warriors such as Arnie Schwarzenegger’s predator have been effective in movies but Geelong research could camouflage soldiers or weapons so they become effectively invisible. Deakin University’s Professor John Endler’s work with other researchers on poison dart frogs might be the start of something big in the defence game. He’s not the only one at Deakin breaking new ground in the search for invisibility, either. Associate Professor Tiffany Walsh, working with the peculiar light characteristics of mother-of-pearl might be onto something that could shield jet fighters. Their studies suggest the brightcoloured patterns of frogs and the 3D molecular make-up of abalone shells, with their nano-engineering possibilities, might be just what the generals ordered. Prof Endler said the frogs, with rainbow hues warning they are toxic or colourings that make them hard to see, adjust their behaviour to capitalise on their built-in defences.

NOW YOU SEE ME: Professor John Endler and, in the inset, a poison dart frog. 122741 Picture: REG RYAN “We found that some frogs move frequently in the same direction while others moved randomly and that this movement behaviour variation corresponded to the colour patterns. “The frogs with elongated patterns moved continuously in the same direc-

tion to create an illusion of static pattern, or a pattern travelling at a slower speed, to thwart predators attempting to track their trajectory. “But frogs that moved randomly and changed directions frequently rely on interrupted colour patterns that ap-

pear visually disruptive and hard to see at a distance, giving them an advantage in predator-detection rather than tracking. “These findings are quite exciting because we believe they might have application in the human world for defence camouflage. “It’s pure speculation about defence applications for it but I suppose a fast-moving gadget for spying on someone, if it had horizontal stripes on it, might be effective.” Assoc Prof Walsh is working with the US Air Force on manipulating light to render aircraft effectively invisible to the enemy. “It’s pretty ambitious and just one application this technology could potentially be used for,” she said earlier this year. “The US Air Force made a call for proposals to make 3D assemblies of nanoparticles using bio-molecules and one potential outcome would be light bending. “Another is photonic circuitry to carry electricity using beams of light instead of wires, exerting our technology to make it bend around corners.”

Labor luminaries to celebrate 50 not-out in Geelong By NOEL MURPHY ALP HEROES John Cain and Steve Bracks will be among Labor Party faithful celebrating 50 years of continuous state representation in Geelong this weekend. The former premiers will join Victorian opposition leader Daniel An-

drews, former federal defence minister Gordon Scholes and serving Labor immigration spokesman Richard Marles in a show of strength at Geelong Trades Hall ahead of the 29 November state election. Labor has been a fixture of the region’s political landscape since the late Neil ’Nipper’ Trezise, a former

Cats rover, won the former state seat of North Geelong in 1964. His son, Ian, holds Geelong until he retires at this year’s poll. Labor’s candidate to retain the seat, Christine Couzens, said Saturday’s anniversary would be a “momentous milestone” but also a time to “express concern about the de-

‘Real rate’ 9.9%, more to come

Driving jobless GEELONG faces job losses of five per cent with the closure of the automotive industry, according to a State of the Regions report. The closure of Ford and its impact on local suppliers would lead to a 6.4 per cent fall in gross regional product as Geelong suffered a “deteriorating economic base”, the report said. Geelong had 12,000 people out of work, up 8.3 per cent in the past two years, with the bulk of Ford and Alcoa redundancies still to be added. Using National Institute of Economic and Industry Research

figures, the report put the municipality’s actual unemployment at 9.9 per cent. Geelong’s headline unemployment rate of 6.8 per cent had jumped .5 per cent a year since the 2009 global financial crisis, the report said. Full-time job prospects for 15to-24 year-olds were dim, with 55 per cent of the age group in parttime employment, up from 44 per cent in 1999. However, the report said Geelong’s household wealth was rising, now standing at an average $655,000, up from $619,000 last year.

Household wealth includes assets such as real estate and cars. The report warned debt-togross-income ratios remained dangerously high in all Australian regions, although Geelong’s had dropped from 1.49 to 1.47. Geelong also recorded a 29 per cent increase in the value of new residential construction, although non-residential building was down 14 per cent. Health services was a bright spot for Geelong employment, up six per cent after Victorian Government decisions on relocating health facilities.

Quiet achievers for women’s issues

1141182-EG26-14

QUIET persistence behind the scenes has enabled the Geelong branch of the national council of women to wield its influence. But its generally low profile made the task of regenerating the group difficult, branch secretary Elaine Granger observed. The branch celebrated 70

years of pushing the cause of women in society with a lunch this week. The branch represents local women’s groups including Zonta, Quota, Soroptimist, St John of God Hospital Auxiliary and Guides. “Despite a low profile we’ve

had significant impact on women’s issues such as domestic violence and education for girls,” Mrs Granger said. “The quiet, personal approach has been of benefit more often than not. Sometimes we think having a higher profile would help us tackle more issues.”

BOUQUETS to Shocked Mother (Buckets & Bouquets, 20 June). I too have been appalled by drivers apparently swerving to run over animals. However, perhaps the driver you saw might have been trying to put the rabbit, a noxious pest, out of its misery. Maybe Merciful, Lara

BUCKETS to Bob Thompson (Letters, 20 June). What a way to mark Refugee Week, using an asylum seeker’s misfortune to take a cheap shot at his supporters. So much for compassion. Disgusted, Geelong West

BUCKETS to the owner of a blue car for doing a runner after reversing into our back gate in a lane off Percy St. Now our gate doesn’t open. It’s one thing to be a crappy driver, another to take no responsibility for your actions. Broken Gate Bad Mood, Newtown

BOUQUETS to a man in a maroon ute who was travelling behind me at 9.30am on 17 May for trying to warm me of the danger of a car coming toward me at the intersection of Christies and Portarlington Rds, Leopold. Margaret, Corio BOUQUETS to the caring staff at Geelong Hospital’s Bellarine Centre, six north, room 609. I appreciated the care and laughs shared during my recent stay at your resort. You were there when I needed you. Lorna, Hamlyn Heights BOUQUETS to the person who handed in my purse with everything intact at Corio Shopping Centre’s post office. I’m so grateful. BOUQUETS to the person who found and handed in my Myki card at South Geelong Railway Station on 19 June. I had just put money on the card and missed the train but reached my destination on the next one, thanks to you. Banned circus to shire:

‘Let public see’ By NOEL MURPHY ERONI’S Circus has asked Surf Coast Shire Council to let it perform as a case study of how circuses treat animals. The circus’s plea follows council’s shire-wide ban of circuses with caged animals. Eroni’s Cathy Maynard said ratepayers should make the call on what constitutes a “well-run circus”. “Unfortunately, we find that emotional hysteria and hypocrisy often overrides any fair, objective assessment of performing circus animals,” she said. “Many of the people who campaign strongly against cir-

cuses have often never even seen a recent Australian circus. They base their opinions on dated overseas incidents, hearsay, propaganda and often complete speculative ignorance.” Ms Maynard said Eroni was “extremely confident” about its treatment of animals. Eroni’s provided patrons with educational material about its animal welfare practices and kept its animals in large, tidy enclosures. Circuses have hit out at not just the Surf Coast ban but obstacles they claim have been thrown up by the City of Greater Geelong. Ms Maynard said council had denied the circus access to the

shire for three years before the ban, claiming suitable sites were unavailable. “For council to even put a motion forward to ban circus animals would clearly imply there (were) suitable circus sites available in the area in the first place, otherwise it would be a pointless ban.” A Surf Coast spokesperson said council had asked the shire’s chief executive officer to investigate ways to ban circuses with animals. “This approach wouldn’t constitute a ban on circuses that have planning permission and don’t use animals,” the spokesperson said.

Brass off to WWI festival in France By LINDSAY TOULMIN DEDICATION to their instruments has paid dividends for two Geelong Memorial Brass Band members. Christina Bowden and Belinda Whitehand have been invited to join a prestigious Eastern Australia Brass band when it plays at France’s Amiens Festival, marking the centenary of World War I’s beginning. The women were excited about the 48-piece band’s festival itinerary, which included performances at renowned battlefronts such as Ypres, Vignacourt, Villers Bretonneux and areas of the Somme. “A favourite song of mine from that area is Roses of Picardie, so I’ve been working hard at rehearsal to ensure I’m completely happy with my rendition”, Ms Whitehand said before the pair left last week. A highlight would be performing at the Flame of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe alongside French and German brass bands. The performance will be the first time a German band has been invited to attend. The festival itinerary will end at Amiens’ cathedral with 200 brass-band members presenting a

Write to us:

Letters Staggering intolerance BOB THOMSON wrote in last week’s Independent how we should remember that the tragic case of Leo Seemanpillai’s suicide was not the fault of Federal Government policies and he should have been deported. Furthermore, Mr Thompson staggered me by suggesting those who were horrified and protested Mr Seemanpillai’s plight were “living off refugee’s misfortune”. Wow! I sincerely hope Mr Thompson never suffers from persecution like many Tamils such as Mr Seemanpillai have. Mr Seemanpillai arrived in Australia as a person with genuine refugee claims. As a community we should at least give these people a chance to be heard before we consider deportation. Sadly, not everyone in the world has the fortune to live in the manner of Mr Thomson and the rest of us in this beautiful and peaceful part of the world. I only hope, pray and agitate that our Government can display compassion and tolerance to the rest of the world ASAP. Charlie El-Hage Ocean Grove

We’re the refugee problem BOB THOMPSON’S letter about Mr Seemanpillai demonstrated a lack of knowledge about the subject of refugees. First, while we do not know the type of entry that saw Mr Seemanpillai to Australia, it should be corrected that it is not “illegal” for people to seek asylum here or elsewhere in the world. An illegal person is someone who has over-stayed their visa, mostly tourists. A refugee may arrive at our borders by sea or air without a visa but as soon as they advise customs officials they are seeking asylum they come under the UNHCR conventions that Australia has adopted. The problem is that under both Labor and now the Liberals we are increasingly moving away from our responsibilities. Mr Seemanpillai was a casualty of the cruel and unjust way we are treating people reaching out, some because of wars in which Australia has participated, such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Australia is a wealthy country yet countries like Chad, Ethiopia and Kenya all take more than 10 times as many refugees. In 2013 we accepted 34,500, which Pakistan takes in a week. We are ranked 74th in the world based on per capita and wealth.

A ferry bad idea revived yet again HERE we go again. A ferry from Portarlington to Melbourne (Independent, 20 June) has already been tried, about 20 years ago. It was a twin-hulled catamaran, Princess of Victoria, if my memory serves me rightly. It was quite a study craft but still unable to survive the severe chop of Port Phillip Bay in wild weather and suffered fatal damage plus injuries to the few passengers on board. The company who owned the vessel could not support

the high running costs and so it was scrapped. A follow-up hovercraft was similarly dumped after a short trial. Water travel is fine on a dead-calm day but when the wind blows hard it becomes deadly. Plus, fuel consumption at speed on water is very high. Give it away, guys, it’s a nobrainer. E Hatton Highton

The reality is we don’t really have a refugee problem, which is largely a political construct to gain votes, we have a moral problem in how we treat these vulnerable people. Mark Ruseler Lara

Undies ads OK in 2014 THE BUCKET from Anonymous in last week’s Independent had me chuckling at the stupidity of their problem. How seeing women and girls in underwear will corrupt kids is beyond me. At least the women and girls are shown wearing underwear. If the ads in question showed naked girls and women in suggestive poses or situations then that would be a different story. While the over-sexualisation of children is a growing concern, seeing these G-rated ads isn’t going to turn all young girls into promiscuous ladies of the night. This is the 21st century and there is nothing morally wrong with ads of women and girls in underwear. Women and girls wear bikinis at the beach, which is okay. If men can’t control their thoughts when looking at these innocent ads then they are the ones with a problem, not society. Women and girls are not just sexual beings and should be allowed to be seen in underwear without being made to feel like sex objects. This is 2014 not 1950. S Bridson Herne Hill

LAST WEEK: The Independent’s story on the latest ferry push.

.0004% equals elephant ALAN Barron says the Sun’s driving climate change (Letters, 13 June). But not so long ago he argued it was due to volcanoes. So which is it? The Sun or volcanoes? He can’t have it both ways. But why does he continue to ignore the elephant in the room? Carbon dioxide (CO2) now totals 400 parts per million of the atmosphere. Before we burnt fossil fuels it was only 280ppm, which was the level that gave us our moderate climate of the past 10,000 years. Can Mr Barron please explain why raising CO2 to present levels would not cause the greenhouse effect to run faster and so cause the planet to warm? What he is really doing is denying the elementary physics at the base of our climate system and which has been taught for many decades in any year-11 geography book. It is one thing to have a reasoned debate but another thing to deny elementary science as basic as gravity and a spherical Earth. It is time to give this one a rest, Mr Barron. Ray Black Belmont

Fracking small talk A MENTION of a natural gas community information open day in a local newspaper last Thursday was the only notification for the communities of Geelong, Torquay, Anglesea and Moriac that State

Government’s consultation process would be held at Torquay the same day. For these communities it was the only forum available in which to voice concerns about coal seam gas mining, or fracking. Considering this form of mining’s huge implications for water supplies, soil and air contamination, increased heavy-haulage road traffic and destruction of farmland, nature reserves and Crown lands, one wonders why the few local people who knew about the consultation had to resort to social media and other personal means to get community participation involved in the event. The organisers admitted their report next March will reflect the “quantity of views gathered”, which gives cause for concern. Given the lack of any advertising prior to the event, one wonders whether the Government is engineering the outcome it wants, fracking approval, considering the same lack of advertising for similar venues elsewhere. Alan Manson Grovedale

Duopoly milking community WOOLWORTHS recently increased its price for one-litre of long-life milk from 99 cents to $1.10, an increase of 11 per cent while the CPI is about three per cent. How does Woolworths justify an apparently outrageous price increase for such a basic commodity? It is fair enough to charge what the customer is prepared to pay when there really is a free market but in a monopoly or duopoly surely there is a moral responsibility to customers, which is not being acknowledged. Neither is Coles, the other player in this grocery duopoly, a beacon of moral rectitude, for I saw that it was recently found to have portrayed some imported frozen product as freshly baked that day. No doubt the boards of these companies would argue their responsibility is only to the shareholders and that they provide employment. They are, however, actively deskilling their workforces, reducing their labour-turnover ratio and eliminating minor competition. It is probably too much to expect a change of behaviour from within these organisations and the public will have to hope for a change enforced from without. Clive Yates Newtown

DR CLEAN Air Australia specialises in duct cleaning, repairs, servicing and mould detection. Operator Matt McMahon is alarmed about rodent damage to heating systems, with rats, mice and possums eating through household central ducting. “The rodents have been making homes in the ducting and breeding there,” Matt says. “Hair, urine, faeces and bad smells manage to make their way through the ducting and into the homes triggering allergic responses such as asthma, headaches and skin problems such as eczema.” Matt advises that feelings of “stuffy head” syndrome and fatigue could be linked to indoor air quality. “People are just starting to recognise the importance of keeping their ducting clean.” In recent years comparative risk studies performed by the US EPA and its science advisory board have consistently ranked indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health. Poor indoor air quality in doctor’s surgeries, nursing homes, office environments and homes also leads to increased spread of viruses. “We advise people completing renovations or moving in to a new home or rental to get their

Gutter talk on risk to homes VICTORIA’S garden state reputation brings with it hidden problems for home-owners. Leaves trapped in roof guttering pose risks including water damage from clogged downpipes, gutter corrosion and contamination of stormwater harvested from roofs. While encouraging consumers to keep roof gutters clear of leaves, Victorian Building Authority (VBA) also reminds them that installing, altering or repairing guttering and downpipes constitutes plumbing work, which must be completed by a registered or licensed plumber. A registered or licensed plumber can install roof guttering

and downpipes to ensure the collection of rainwater and its direction into the home’s stormwater drainage system is carried out to the required standard. VBA technical and regulation director Jarrod Edwards says gutter maintenance is an important part of annual property maintenance. “There are many products available that can be installed or used to prevent leaves from making their way into guttering and downpipes and there are many businesses providing gutter cleaning services,” Mr Edwards says. “Clearing leaves from gutters manually can involve using a tall ladder, so it’s important that

people who engage in this work follow strict safety guidelines.” A guide to the safe use of portable ladders is available at worksafe.vic.gov.au. Mr Edwards says work clearing leaves and debris from roof gutters is unregulated but only registered or licenced plumbers can clear a blockage that requires the gutter or downpipe to be detached or altered. Home-owners can check whether their plumber is appropriately registered or licensed to install roof guttering and downpipes and to connect them to a stormwater system at vba.vic. gov.au/check-a-plumbers-registration.

In other shots the lads are pursued by adoring crowds, wend their way through police cordons, pose in technicolour Sgt Pepper’s outfits, rub shoulders with celebrities, sport major-league ’60s moustaches, bang guitars in studios and on stage and etch their famous autographs for fans. In one shot John Lennon plays with son Julian, another has Paul McCartney, in suit and tie, and girlfriend Jane Asher looking for all the world like a garden variety business couple. Harrison sports skivvies and threeD specs, Ringo’s garbed in a sheepskin that might serve a yak-herder well enough. If any one thing typified, indeed spearheaded, the social revolution that was the 1960s, it was The Beatles. Between them and Vietnam, an era of peace, love and drugs changed the Western world’s taste in music, politics and fashion. A photographic exhibition of Beatles photographs, many of them rarely seen, is about to go on show at East Geelong’s Elephant and Castle Hotel.

Experts in the Blak arts here By EMILY IANNELLO LEADING Aboriginal artists will perform at Drysdale on Sunday. They will appear in Blak Caberet, featuring a range of comedy, poetry, musical and dance from 4pm at The Potato Shed. Producer Jason Tamiru described the show as “funny, moving, heart-warming and very entertaining”. “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people come from an oral history and Blak Cabaret plays to that strength,” he said.

ne h Ju Saturday 28t

“The established performers have been entertaining audiences for more than 30 years. Our emerging performers are continuing the story, forging their own footprints.” Musicians on the bill include Kutcha Edwards, Black Elvis, Uncle Herb Pattern, Illana Atkinson, Peter Rotumah and Joe Geia. Other artists include So You Think You Can Dance hip-hop dancer Nikki Ashby, comedian Kevin Kropinyeri, poet Dennis Fisher and actor Ian Michael. The MC will be actor and

director Kylie Belling, who appeared in feature film The Sapphires and television series Redfern Now. VicHealth chief Jerril Rechter said Blak Cabaret, funded under VicHealth’s Arts about Us program, was top-class entertainment from Australia’s finest Aboriginal performers. “It’s a funny and moving commentary about where we come from, who we are and, most importantly, a celebration of the richness and diversity of all Victorians.”

QUIET TIME The National Wool Museum’s Tanya Stedwell inspects a silent movie classic - opening night at the Geelong Theatre in 1913. 122722 Picture: REG RYAN

The The Friends Friends of of Caddies Caddies presents presents

Silence golden in new festival

By NOEL MURPHY

SILENT movies, in their day, were stunning new technology; arresting moving pictures that had audiences jumping from their seats as locomotives came toward them. Pianos belting out crescendos set the mood, raised the alarm, took the foot off the throttle when need be. Today’s 3-D has nothing on the shock of the new that movies brought to a world entranced by a new technology in a new century. Chaplin, Keaton, Pickford and a host of voiceless comics and tragedians entranced moviegoers and Hollywood’s rise in the coastal hills of California set the pace for a world that wouldn’t be tipped on its head with anything comparable until the internet almost a century later. For all that movie-making technology has changed, its simplest premise remains its most popular - a good story well told. Which is just what Seven Wonders Silent Film Festival, at Geelong’s National Wool Museum, is about: stories told through art films, animation, drama, comedy and documentaries. All are the work of aspiring and pro filmmakers, “vloggers”, YouTubers, artists, media students and schoolkids across the country and as far afield as New York and Puerto Rico. Thirty silent movies, each under seven minutes’ duration, range across the imaginings of their makers. The subject matter includes a kinetic poem of the life and death of a sunbird, slapstick-inspired ways of catching baddies, a boy swallowing a fivecent piece, another who wakes up deaf and a woman spending a day playing as a kid. It’s all about wonder, says the museum’s promotion. “We may be familiar with the wonders of the ancient world, such as the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, or the wonders of the natural world such as the Great Barrier Reef and

BLIGHTER: A still from Zoe Hollingsworth’s Wide World Adventures. Mount Everest, but are we familiar with the everyday wonders of our lives?” Works within the festival include such everyday wonders as the perils of over-eating, catching leaves, the streets of Kathmandu and landmarks of Geelong. The evocative titles include Seven Wonders of Seven People, Chroma Mobile, Shed Bot, The Reservoir, 7 Veces, (Paint) and The Seventh of the Seventh. According to the festival charter, storytelling through film is one of the most powerful ways of sharing ideas and experiences. And, of course, with the popularity of smartphones and handheld media devices, with their ability to record and edit films, more people are using film to tell their stories. Visitors to Seven Wonders will find more than just the films. A terrific showcase of stills from the movies adorn the gallery’s walls, together with a couple of stunning early-Geelong theatre images and some carefully selected thoughts gleaned from the silent flicks. All the festival films are on the museum’s YouTube channel, with a public vote for the favourite on Facebook.

BELL Park’s Le Thai Chef restaurant has wasted little time staking its claim as one of Geelong’s best eateries. Its traditional Thai dishes, along with regional influences and fusion nouveau recipes - in a spanking new state-of-the-art dining area - have been embraced by locals, workers, families and the corporate sector. Owner Theo Avgoulis says newcomers are rapidly becoming regular patrons, returning multiple times to sample the fare of award-winning Thai chef Sun Wong-Aree.

“The new kitchen is hitting its straps and settling in nicely and the constant has been people get up with a smile and say, ‘Great food, we’re coming back’. Some people are saying it’s the best Thai food in Geelong,” Theo says. “We’ve had our competitors through the place, too, which was a bit strange. They sampled it all, took notes and photos and details of the menus. “The lady said, ‘I own restaurant’, so we’ve been fortunate enough to entertain even our competition.” 1139836-PB24-14

Imitation might be the highest form of flattery but Theo’s still working hard to ensure Le Thai Chef only improves further. The restaurant boasts a range of dishes and prices to suit various tastes and budgets. Valuepacked express lunch mains begin at $9.90, while top-line treats cost $28 to $30. “I don’t think there’s any one area of the market where we haven’t been able to get strong support - we even have a great set-menu corporate package,” Theo says. “This restaurant has lifted the bar for service, quality and style.”

Kids on a roll ROLLERWAY in Newtown offers lots of fun and exercise for children during school holidays – regardless of the weather. With roller skating undergoing a resurgence and rollerblading still as popular as ever, kids will be keen to pull on their skates during holidays. With extra holiday session times scheduled, skating is available seven days a week. Rollerway offers a variety of activities to keep kids of all ages entertained. Rink operator Raul Aparicio says the sessions are always fun with music videos, lights and lots of games and activities throughout.

“It’s a really fun and safe activity for kids of all ages,” Raul says. Rollerway also has a separate indoor skate park for skateboarding, scooters and BMX riders. “Our skate park is very popular and a great alternative to outdoor parks,” Raul says. The centre is also available for children’s functions. “We have lots of birthday parties at the centre and the introduction of the separate skate park, disco lounge and jumping castle areas have helped modernise the activities,” Raul says. In-line roller hockey is another feature at Newtown, with Geelong boasting Australia’s biggest

Jade and Samantha at Rollerway. independent roller hockey league. “The centre offers kids and adults a chance to get a bit active and have fun regardless of the weather,” Raul says. Rollerway Newtown is at 6-8 Lambert Avenue, Newtown. More information is available at www.rollerway.com.au

Parents can send their children up the wall for a change at The Rock Adventure Centre.

PARENTS can find peace of mind at Geelong’s The Rock Adventure Centre during school holidays. The Rock offers indoor climbing in a safe and controlled environment where kids can keep themselves entertained while enjoying terrific exercise at the same time. Parents can also try the The Rock’s climbing walls to discover a fun way to improve fitness. Indoor climbing uses all muscles simultaneously while providing an excellent low-impact fitness regimen. Climbers also enjoy boosts to their self-esteem as they overcome challenges and reach their climbing achievements. Parents who don’t want to climb can still be involved by holding their children’s safety ropes while they climb to share in their achievements. The Rock is also ideal for grandparents searching for ways to entertain

grandchildren during holidays. Instructors are always available to help show beginners the ropes. The Rock’s climbing walls are designed to accommodate all levels, from beginners through to expert climbers. The Rock also has a huge bouldering area with short climbing walls that are only a few feet above a padded floor, so no safety rope or partner is required. The Rock will be open from midday, seven days a week during school holidays. Parents can relax with a coffee while the kids experience the thrill of climbing during the supervised holiday sessions. Ideal for primary school-aged children, the sessions run from 2pm to 4pm Monday to Friday during holidays. For information, visit www. rockadventures.com.au or phone 5221 3101.

The RAAF Museum is filled with over 20 display aircraft and a magnitude of memorabilia tracing the history of the RAAF, and fascinating tales of heroic deeds.

GEELONG’S unique paintless dent repair service, Aus Dent, has moved to bigger and brighter premises. But customers won’t have far to go because the award-winning service is still in South Geelong, offering a cost-effective way of repairing vehicle dents and dings that have not cracked or chipped paintwork. Aus Dent has serviced the Geelong area for more than 10 years, getting the job done right the first time with no sanding, filling or expensive paintwork. Paintless dent removal leaves vehicles with the original finish, so there’s no mismatched paintwork or repair marks. Aus Dent’s quality trained technicians are masters of the system of “massaging” out the affected area to immediately improve your car’s resale value. Paintless dent removal is also faster than conventional body shop methods and most repairs can be finished in a couple of hours. Geelong manager Gary LeGuern says Aus Dent saves time and money. Aus Dent Geelong offers free quotes and a quality guarantee. Aus Dent is at factory 2/14 Birkett Plc, South Geelong, phone 5223 1128 or 0414 638 749 or visit ausdent.com.au.

IndySport Geelong homes in on Chappy By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN IT’S NOT exactly home but Etihad Stadium is a lot closer to Kardinia Park than Port Adelaide, Fremantle, Sydney or Gold Coast. On previous form, that in itself should mean a win for the travel-weary Cats. Chris Scott would say the losses represent the fact that the interstate teams take up three of the top four places, rather than an aversion to travel. The top eight sides Geelong has ac-

counted for so far include Hawthorn, Collingwood and North Melbourne - the Cats have not lost a game in Victoria so far this season. Essendon still harbours finals aspirations despite its ASADA dramas, as demonstrated by its fighting win over Adelaide last week. But the Bombers have only a four point win, in the corresponding round in 2011, to show for their last five meetings with the Cats. Already the indications from the

Bomber camp are that it has earmarked this as a key game in its fringe-of-theeight struggle. Fans will also be keen to see how Paul Chapman deals with playing against his old side. Geelong’s older hands have at times afforded their former teammates a little too much respect, forgetting they also have a game to be won. The respect for the talismanic Chapman was identified by Jimmy Bartel as he contemplated the peculiar prospect

tackling his old and familiar teammate. No doubt all the premiership teammates will be best of buddies once careers are over and the reunions kick in. In the meantime, there is again a game to be won and a top-four finish to be chased. Ball use was a key deficiency against the Suns, acknowledged by Scott postmatch and spotlighted this week. Too many handballs at the expense of kicks meant turnovers were quickly punished.

Warriors’ Dandy after 6-1 victory

On the

bite

By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors banged on six goals in just over 30 minutes to come from behind for its biggest win of the season away from home against Brunswick City last weekend. North Geelong was busy early, with a Robert Zadworny cross getting past fast-approaching Michael Anderson for a goal kick. That was quickly followed by Reardo Luka’s shot at goal after receiving a long pass only to find the hands of Brunswick keeper Mason Interlandi. Brunswick opened the scoring on 15 minutes when Dimitri Vithoulkas slipped past the Warriors’ defence and lobbed a neat ball over Daniel Zilic in goals. With plenty of possession and control, the Warriors had plenty of chances including Zadworny’s break from the left to beat his defender. The resulting shot at goal from a sharp angle tested Interlandi, forcing him to tip over the bar. The second half was all North Geelong, with a 30-minutre blitz starting in the 54th minute when Mark Paleka’s shot deflected to fall for Luka to tap in from close range. Two minutes laster Nathan Long whipped a ball in from the right flank finding Luka in penalty area to head home. On 59 minutes Michael Anderson finished a well-placed ball by Paleka who, after having a shot saved by Interlandi, collected his own ball to lay off for the skipper. On 75 minutes Luka collected his hat-trick with a perfectly-placed finish after working his way into position to collect a cross in the area. Then Zadworny drilled a strong low shot on 85 minutes, followed by more pain for Brunswick when a foul in the penalty area during injury time gave North Geelong centre back Matthew Townley a share of the spoils to seal the 6-1 win. Brunswick coach Joe De Martino shared his frustration at his side failing to close out the game, giving away a lead held for around 50 minutes. North Geelong Warriors coach Micky Colina was delighted with the emphatic score but thought the margin should have been larger. “Overall I’m happy and the game plan is coming together. We just need to execute better in front of goal.” The Warriors play Dandenong City in a derby match with their sister club this Saturday. With nine goals in the past two matches, the Warriors are finding the net but Dandenong is coming off an indifferent form patch. A loss to Richmond on the weekend will give Dandenong coach Ivan Duzel enough reason to rouse up the troops to try overturning their roundone loss at home to the Warriors.

Essendon is among the highest ranked teams for disposals, averaging almost 400 a game, while the Cats are ranked 10th, averaging 361 a match. It means that when Geelong does get its hands on the ball, high efficiency will be required to collect a winning score. The alternative forward option offered by Shane Kersten should help considerably, while the steady improvement of Allen Christensen and Josh Caddy will help, although Matthew Stokes will be missed.

HIGHTON bodybuilder Calum Von Moger has won his most prestigious title yet – World Fitness Federation Mr Universe. Von Moger competed on Saturday in the Extreme Body class at the championships in Seoul, South Korea. “I’m extremely happy,” Von Moger posted on his Facebook page. “I worked my ass off the (last) 12 months and this is the best reward hard work has given me: WFF Pro Bodybuilder status. “I’m very grateful for all the people who believed in me and

supported me along the way. Your support has been second to none!” The title will significantly boost Von Moger’s marketability as he continues to break into the North American market. The Independent reported earlier this year that he had already been signed by two major sports and leisure agencies and had lined up photo and video shoots. He has also gathered major bodybuilding sponsors Cellucor and Strongliftwear. The Arnold Schwarzenegger look-a-like met his idol at an Arnold Sports Festival, founded by the Terminator, in Colum-

bus, Ohio, earlier this year. Organisers asked Von Moger to present an award in the bodybuilding section of the festival, which included 50 sports, other events and a major fitness expo. Von Moger has been compared favourably to the Austrian former Mr Universe at the same age of 23. He plans to live and work for the next three years in the US where he will compete in bodybuilding shows, undertake photo shoots and seek acting work. He first came to global notice with a fifth placing in last year’s Mr Universe in Austria as a relative newcomer.

RYLEY Hutchins and father Shane were into the action soon after venturing out onto Lake Purrumbete early last Saturday in search of trout. Ryley’s rod went off first when a well-conditioned brown took his Shimano Waxwing, flat-lined trolled behind the boat. They continued trolling as the day progressed, boating plenty of small Chinook salmon from 25m down. Darryl Luttrell sought advice and help from friend Trevor Holmes to fish Lake Toolondo, catching a huge male brown trout over 3kg. Out early the next morning Darryl found more trout of around 2kg in his first weekend fishing the lake. Michael Evans returned to Wurdee Boluc Reservoir for more quality redfin on soft plastics. He fished for one hour, landing a pair of 47cm and 48cm reddies. Lake Bullen Merri continued fishing well for Chinook salmon to 1.5kg. The standout method was baiting up finely sliced pilchard fillets and drifting them almost to the bottom with little weight and a liberal amount of burley. Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree continued producing brown and rainbow trout to 1.5kg for anglers drifting out mudeye under floats. Casting Strike Pro Bob ‘N’ Spoons from the lakes edges was also successful on the browns. Dylan Pace fished for pinkie snapper around Geelong’s waterfront, landing a few small fish on three-inch gulp minnows. However, he was taken by surprise when his rod loaded up and line started peeling off with a trophy-sized 82cm snapper. Kevin Bardsley fished for squid at Swan Bay but had little luck and after an hour or two. Then he decided to target flathead, catching eight to 54cm. The lower reaches of the Barwon Estuary hosted great numbers of salmon and silver trevally to 30cm. Fishing from the purpose-built platforms with pippies and prawns was productive an hour either side of high tide. Anglers caught lots of squid from the Hermsley Rd grass beds, with 2.5-size jigs working best. Spinning the surf for salmon was excellent over the past week. Fish from 700g to just over 1kg were a common capture, with the odd larger fish mixed in among them. Lures from 25g to 30g worked well, especially pink Arma Shads or Sluks in the blue mac pattern.

SURPRISE: Dylan Pace with the big snapper he caught while fishing for smaller fare along Geelong’s waterfront.
