Holidays in your PJs By JOLENE OGLE SCHOOL holidays are all about relaxing, and the students and teachers of Noosaville State School have a head start with their annual Wear-Your-PJs day. Almost all students and teachers donned their night-time sleep wear last Friday to celebrate the end of the semester, with animalthemed onesies proving the most popular sleeping attire. Clad in flannelette pyjamas and a pink dressing gown, Principal Mary McMahon said it was fun to start the holidays as she planned to continue them, relaxing in her PJs. If you’re wondering what to do to keep the kids entertained these school holidays, the Eumundi Markets have a range of activities on offer including magic shows, cool science and play with clay workshops. See our Live section for more information on the times and dates. Noosa Council also has a range of activities for kids of all ages including children’s yoga at the Noosa Leisure Centre, free learn to swim classes at the Noosa Aquatic Centre, the super-fun Jumpin’ at The J, and a stack of art workshops at the Butter Factory Arts Centre. For more information on what you can get up to these school holidays, visit www.noosa. gov.au

Noosaville State School students Lochie Williams, Harry Irwin, Mia Burgess, Hunter Burgess, Hayley Williams and Ziggy King celebrate the start of holidays with Principal Mary McMahon and Deputy Principal Wayne Carty.

Safety harms kids By JONATHON HOWARD SCHOOL playgrounds across Noosa have come under the spotlight following research from University of the Sunshine Coast that the “cotton wool” approach to children’s play could be doing more harm than good. While every parent fears for their child’s safety and every school fears safety legislation, USC psychology lecturer Dr Rachel Sharman said the “cotton wool” approach was leading to “avoidance motivation” in some children.

ming from avoidance motivation would continue to manifest. “The old saying “try and try again” is simply not applied to the playgrounds of today,” she said. Dr Sharman also used an example of a New Zealand school making global headlines after it threw out the school safety legislation. Swanson School in a northwest borough of Auckland has 500 students who are allowed to climb trees, play with heavy bricks and blocks and ride their bikes during lunch breaks.

“It’s a fear of failure - basically kids that are restricted from taking risks in the playground are developing a fear of making decisions in which they feel they could fail,” she said. “This fear is leading to less resilient kids who are essentially afraid of trying.” Dr Sharman recently presented her findings during the USC parents’ night at the university. She said without radical changes to playgrounds and a relaxing of playground legislation, the issues stem-

Swanson School principal Bruce McLachlan said he knew children might get hurt, and that was exactly the point. “Perhaps, if they were freed from the ‘cotton wool’ in which their 21st century parents had them swaddled, his students may develop some resilience, use their imaginations (and) solve problems on their own,” he said. Noosa Today asked Cooroy State School principal Des Deighton for his views. “Philosophically, I like the idea of relaxing the rules around what kids can

play and how they play as long as it is safe,” he said. “I do think in some cases, parents wrap kids in “cotton wool” for want of a better term. “Under current safety legislation we have to operate under however, our hands are tied to a certain degree.” Have your say: Do you think kids are wrapped in cotton wool? And would you support a move towards relaxed playground rules? Email Noosa Today: newsdesk@noosatoday.net. au

Resorting to a political ploy? By JOLENE OGLE CONTROVERSIAL MP Clive Palmer has dismissed claims that last weekend’s Fairfax Festival was a political ploy to secure votes. The festival, which included free entry to Palmersaurus and Motorama, saw more than 30,000 locals flow through the gates of Palmer Coolum Resort for two and a half days of community forums, dinosaurs and vintage cars. In an interview with Noosa Today, Mr Palmer dismissed the “cynical” claims saying families were “doing it hard” and deserved a day out. “I’ve got an obligation and a responsibility as a Member of Parliament to listen and not just to one person or one part of advice, but to all the people who have elected me,” he said. “I’m fortunate in my life to have this resort that’s available. What sort of a person would I be if I locked it up and excluded the people who have put their faith and trust in me? “Would that sort of member be a good Member of Parliament? Or is it better to share it with people and show some compassion with what they’re about? So that’s why we have Fairfax Day.” Mr Palmer said the festival offered a chance for the community to come together and voice their

It doesn’t matter if you’re from the Labor Party or the Liberal Party, you’re still an Australian with a valid point of view,” he said. While Mr Palmer didn’t indicate whether he would run in the next election, he said he would continue to focus on improving the lives of those in his electorate. Mr Palmer also confirmed he had donated his parliamentary salary to local charities, with more than 170 cheques already sent. Mr Palmer said other politicians

should follow his lead, “if they can afford to do so”, because “public service should be about public service”. “My motivation for serving in Fairfax wasn’t fuelled by my motivation to get money,” he said. “So I was able to have enough other money in my life to (donate to charity). We will continue to do that during my term here.” But, Mr Palmer said focusing on politicians’ salaries was a waste of time and a diversion from more important issues. “The bigger issues are: How can we help people? How can we get the economy going?” he said.

GELATISSIMO on Hastings Street has produced a special cookies and cream soccer ball to celebrate the World Cup. Gelatissimo Noosa is a sponsor of the Noosa Lions soccer team and supports them with product vouchers for the weekly ‘Man of the Match’. ATTEMPTS to disperse the Wallace Park flying-fox colony could create new and greater problems for residents, says Noosa councillor Tony Wellington, who has sought to ease public concerns as Noosa Council throws out the idea of shifting the flying-fox colony. Cr Wellington was asked to present Noosa Council CEO Brett De Chastel, with a petition calling for the dispersal and relocation of the Wallace Park flying-fox colony. The petition carried the names of more than 421 signatures and although no speech was permitted during council’s ordinary meeting, the petition will be considered by Mr De Chastel. Meanwhile, Cr Wellington said moving a flying fox colony was no simple matter. “Any dispersal attempts must adhere to a code of practice for flying-fox management under the Nature Conservation Act,” he said. “Past experience shows that dispersal attempts are often unsuccessful and can end up creating new problems. “One analysis of attempts to relocate camps in 10 different locales showed that in the majority of cases the original camps were re-established. Not only that, but new problematic camps were often created, generally within a distance of less than half a kilometre from the original site.” Cr Wellington used the example of Maclean in northern NSW, where $400,000 was spent during many years in an attempt to move a long-standing colony. “In the end the animals continued to return to the original site,” he said. “What’s more, they established seven new problematic sites. The conclusion drawn by researchers was: ’The outcome after nearly a decade of dispersal attempts at Maclean was that ... the number of affected residents experi-

encing conflict had increased’.” Cr Wellington also emphasised the vast loss and human impact imposed on Australia’s greatest pollinator and protected species. “Although they may appear to be plentiful where they congregate to roost, in fact their numbers have reduced considerably due to habitat loss and their overall survival is not assured,” he said. “The grey-headed flying-fox is listed as “vulnerable”. This is the species that currently dominates the colony at Wallace Park.” Cr Wellington has now called on residents to be patient as well as emphasising the low-level health risk. “It is currently estimated to contain around 6000 animals, far less than the 30,000 that were present at the beginning of June,” he said. “Having visited the Wallace Park colony site and spoken with neighbours I am aware that this flying-fox camp has been causing distress for some residents because of the noise, odour and droppings. “It’s important to note, however, that there are no identified health implications for people living near flying-fox camps. There is no record of disease being transmitted through their droppings or urine. “Hendra virus cannot be transmitted directly from bats to humans, and Australian Bat Lyssavirus can only be contracted as a result of being bitten or scratched. Clearly people should not handle any bats, either small microbats or the larger flying-foxes.” Noosa Council is preparing a flyingfox fact sheet that will be distributed to residents living near Wallace Park, but Councillors have already voted in favour of leaving the flying-fox colony alone. Give us your thoughts: Do you think attempts to move the Wallace Park flying fox colony would fail?

And Peregian wants in By JONATHON HOWARD SEVERAL Peregian Springs residents have raised the question: “why can’t we join Noosa Council?”, as the boundary re-alignment debate gathers momentum. The re-alignment bid has so far included Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs, but little to no mention of Peregian Springs. In fact, several residents of Peregian Springs thought they were already a part of Noosa Council. The idea of “EDV+PS” has since been raised and many Peregian Springs residents said the move “makes sense”. Former Noosa resident Peter Barrett, who recently built a home in Peregian Springs with his wife Cindy, said they were shocked to realise they were no longer a part of Noosa. Mr and Mrs Barrett said their values were in line with Noosa

“Why not include Peregian Springs in boundary re-alignment debate,” says Peter Barrett, who’s asking for views of other residents. Council and they had appealed for other Peregian Springs’ residents to express their views. “We’ve never had any issues with Sunshine Coast Council,” he said.

“We just feel our values are more aligned with Noosa Council - which is less pro-development.” Mr Barrett has appealed for other Peregian Springs residents to come forward. “The most logical boundary would be the Yandina-Coolum Road, although there are other options including the forestry roads that could make the new boundary,” he said. However, EDV Residents Group president Johanne Wright said Peregian Springs was previously canvassed in early 2008 and revealed residents were divided. “Peregian Springs would have to run their own race to be included in Noosa Council, as we are focusing on Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs,” she said. Mr Barrett said he was happy to join any grassroots group considering a bid for Peregian Springs.

“I am simply raising the idea and wonder what other Peregian Springs’ residents think,” he said. As a relatively new suburb, Peregian Springs is home to many young families who often shop and play in Noosa - more so than Caloundra for example. Meanwhile, a spokesman for Sunshine Coast Council said the full details of the boundary realignment had not been submitted. “Council would need to see the full details of any transfer proposal before considering a boundary realignment,” the spokesman said. Have your say: Do you think Peregian Springs should be a part of Noosa Council? Email your views and comments to newsdesk@noosatoday.net.au

What the residents had to say By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA Today asked several Peregian Springs residents whether the suburb should be included in the EDV re-boundary bid and the results were surprising. “I am all for the idea - but I’m also concerned about some of the cost of amalgamation and whether the true figures have been revealed.” Simon Wischer and his wife Sue, of Peregian Springs said. “I would prefer the move from a low density (less development) perspec-

tive - yes.” Maggie Nelson, of Peregian Springs. “Yes, of course (Peregian Springs) it should. We’re only down the road from Noosa and it makes sense - I actually thought we already were a part of Noosa Council.” Alli Norman, of Peregian Springs. “I reckon the whole de-amalgamation process was silly in the first place. But I would welcome the move toward including Peregian Springs in the council.” Adam Joy, of Noosaville.

In brief School zone warning LOCAL police have issued a warning to parents to obey the road rules around schools or risk a traffic blitz. Noosa Heads Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said he drove around school zones last week and was shocked to see cars parked on zebra crossings and footpaths. “The parking rules and regulations are there to aid the flow of traffic and help keep students safe,” he said. Sen Sgt McReight said his officers attended a school zone last week and issued seven tickets within half an hour, while another driver was caught doing 24km/h over the school zone speed limit. “It’s dangerous to the students that parents have just dropped off,” he said. “We’re hoping we don’t have to enforce the rules. We’re hoping parents will do the right and safe thing.”

Two face fraud charges TWO Tewantin women are facing at least 30 charges of fraud after police raided their home last Wednesday. Noosa Heads OIC Sen Sgt Steve McReight said the arrests were an example of good police work. “The officers raided the home in relation to drugs, but they also noticed a heap of stolen property while there,” he said. Police will allege numerous bags of cannabis, syringes, a bag of methamphetamine and a bong were found during the raid, before officers returned with a separate warrant to search for the stolen property.

Kiwis flock in KIWI visitors are flocking to Noosa this winter as they take advantage of Air New Zealand’s returned service to the Sunshine Coast Airport. At a cost of around $168 one way from Auckland to Sunshine Coast (and the same price return) the flight path is now in its third season and experts are tipping a boost to the region’s tourism dollars. In fact, according to Air NZ figures, the airline will offer close to 13,000 seats between the two ports this winter, compared to 7500 seats during the inaugural 2012 season. Tourism Noosa general manager Damien Massingham said he looked forward to welcoming many more New Zealand visitors to the Noosa region for a warm break. Mr Massingham said Tourism Noosa was targeting New Zealanders as part of the current winter campaign, “Noosa - You Could Be Here”, enticing our Kiwi neighbours to book a

Air New Zealand revived it’s winter flight path to the Sunshine Coast Airport last week. warm beach holiday. “Our events program at this time of the year also has plenty to attract New Zealand visitors the King of the Mountain Challenge in Pomona on Sunday 27 July, has a great history of NZ participation and victories; the Noosa Long Weekend Festival from 18-27 July, has a range of fantastic arts and cultural performances; and the Noosa Jazz Festival from 4-7 September

has long been a favourite with New Zealanders,” Mr Massingham said. Mr Massingham said the number of nights spent in the Noosa region by visitors from New Zealand increased 6 per cent in the year to December 2013 - “and spending increased by almost 3 per cent,” he said. The direct Air NZ service will run until 26 October.

Cyclists in space program By JONATHON HOWARD IT’S a metre that means the world to Noosa cyclists and they’re hoping drivers take it seriously. Noosaville cyclist David Brown said the Noosa Shire had looked after the welfare of cyclists and he suggested the Noosa Council take a lead role. “With the recent state legislation regarding buffer gaps that motorists are mandated to leave between their vehicle and cyclists, the council could be pro-active and erect signs in appropriate locations notifying drivers of their obligations,” he said. “We have many interstate visitors who would not be aware of this new law. Combine that with the obvious popularity of cycling in our beautiful area, it makes a lot of sense. “A sign as simple as - “Leave a 1m gap”, with an appropriate graphic would be all that is required.

Noosa cyclists are hoping Noosa Council supports the metre matters campaign with greater signage. “Make Noosa a leader in this new campaign to make cycling safer.” Meanwhile, QLD Police said motorists caught driving within one metre of cyclists would be fined $330 and lose three demerit points under a two-year trial that started in March. The one-metre clearance is required when passing in 40km/h, 50km/h and 60km/h zones. Where the speed limit is

higher than 60km/h, motorists will be required to give cyclists 1.5 metre clearance when passing. Motorists will be able to cross double white lines, when it is safe to do so, in order to pass a cyclist. Transport Minister Scott Emerson committed to the onemetre clearance trial in January, but did not announce the penalty that would be imposed on motorists until recently.

A brush with Princess Mary By JONATHON HOWARD IT WAS a brush with royalty that Noosa artist Tom Macbeth will never forget and one he hopes will impress the Archibald Prize judges this month. Mr Macbeth recently submitted his photo-realistic portrait of Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark, entitled “Transformation”, which he said took three months to paint. Mr Macbeth previously made the Archibald finals for his portrait of Aussie sailing adventurer Jessica Watson in 2011 and he hopes this will be his year. Speaking with Noosa Today, Mr Macbeth said he spent two days with Princess Mary and described her as “down-to-earth”.

“She was extremely welcoming to the palace in Copenhagen,” he said. “She was very grounded and a down-to-earth person.” Mr Macbeth said the sitting started with a brainstorming session discussing various aspects of Princess Mary’s life in Denmark. The common thread continued to be her remarkable transformation from humble Hobart girl, to global figure and Danish royal princess. He said the portrait not only depicts Princess Mary standing in her feminine power, but also features the Monarch Butterfly, which symbolises both the transformation of Mary’s life, as well as being the symbol for her charity, The

Mary Foundation. Mr Macbeth said he was surprised when the princess offered to drive him and his wife Carolina to the park. “We jumped in her car and she drove us to the park to show us the cherry blossoms which we thought would provide a very feminine backdrop in the painting - they are her favourite flowers,” he said. Mr Macbeth said they were not swamped by onlookers, but instead enjoyed a pleasant stroll around the entire park. “Of course everybody recognised her, but they would just wave and she would wave back.” Finalists for the 2014 Archibald Prize will be announced on 10 July.

Cooroy State School students reading their poetry assignments with parents, teachers and family members.

COOROY State School students have excelled during a busy second term with field trips, sporting activities, poetry writing and several “epic” behaviour awards. Principal Des Deighton said the vast majority of students achieved “epic” status during a celebration of sport, craft and movies held for the last week of term two. “It confirms the Discipline Audit, conducted by a person external to the school, where Cooroy SS was acknowledged as outstanding

or very high in nearly all aspects of how behaviour is managed in the school,” Mr Deighton said. Cooroy SS students from years 1P and 1BC worked hard on their poetry assignments and held a poetry picnic last week. “It was really great being able to get up in front of all the parents and do our poems,” Mr Deighton said. Mr Deighton said the teachers were overwhelmed by the numbers of adults who came along. “It was a wonderful sharing experience and many parents and carers organised a day off work to

come along,” he said. Cooroy SS Year 4 students spent an exciting and educational day in Brisbane during the last week of term two. Mitchell from 4H said it was great. “We were able to go under the Story Bridge and look at the amazing buildings in Brisbane,” he said. The students also visited the Maritime Museum and toured the HMAS Diamantina. After lunch, it was off to ice skating which Ella from 4H said was something different.

“I had never been ice skating before and I really enjoyed it,” she said. Wherever the students went they were complimented on their good manners and behaviour, with the crew of the City Cat commenting that they were among the best-behaved and well-mannered students that had ever travelled with them. Mr Deighton invited people new to the district or people with students of Prep age in 2015 to come along and visit the school. The office reopens on 14 July.

ROTARY Club of Noosa’s first female president Tess Alexandroff, did such a good job that the committee had to bend the rules to keep her at the helm for two years instead of one. But Ms Alexandroff’s presidency came to an end on Monday 30 June, at the Tewantin Noosa RSL. She handed the baton to newly elected president Paul Porter who will continue Ms Alexandroff’s sterling efforts. More than 100 Rotarians, dignitaries and members of the public filled the Tewantin Noosa RSL’s function room for the changeover dinner. In fact at one point, several outside Rotarians asked if they could join the changeover dinner and extra tables had to be set. Ms Alexandroff paid tribute to the Rotary committee board and expressed her gratitude to the community for their ongoing support. “It’s been a an honour to serve as the first female Rotary Club of Noosa President, and I feel confident that Mr Porter will take good care of the organisation now and into the future,” she said. While the dinner was organised to celebrate Ms Alexandroff’s presidency and the changeover to Mr Porter’s presidency, it was also a chance to recognise long-time Rotarian Graeme Dwyer. Mr Dwyer has been a Rotarian for 45 years and a Rotary Club of Noosa member for 22 years. Mr Dwyer was honoured with a Paul Harris Fellow and received a ruby pendant as a symbolic gesture for his commitment to Rotary’s cause. In a shock surprise to Ms Alexandroff she too picked up a Paul Harris Fellow and ruby pendant. “I feel completely humbled by this award,” she said. Ms Alexandroff said she would be writing to Noosa Today in the coming weeks to outline her new role as membership director.

Local music man By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA music producer Luke Williams is making waves in the music world. Luke, 30, recently used his music production skills to help Wide Bay rockers “Dogwood Crossing”, rocket into Triple J Unearthed fame. The five-piece rock band was Luke’s first major project and he produced the band’s most recent LP album “Hear Lies Freedom”. The album is racing up the charts with the single ‘Little Birdie’ making its debut at #22 in the Triple J Unearthed Top 100. But within two weeks all three songs released peaked in the top 5 with “Silence” at #1, “Fight” at #2, and “Little Birdie” at #4 on the Triple J Unearthed charts. The passionate music producer has also worked with big names such as Matt Corby and Tim Freedman of The Whitlams. Luke said his passion for music started at Sunshine Beach High, before he decided to study music production at Sunshine Coast University. “My high school offered a subject known as Music Industry Skills - the subject was a huge starting point for me,” he said. “I was able to really develop my production skills and this led to me studying a university degree.” Luke said he was approached to start production for Dogwood Crossing last year - and he jumped at the chance. “It’s been an incredible experience and we’re all really pleased with the band’s success,” he said.

Learn to sail: Kids across the Noosa region are being encouraged to visit Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club during the school holidays.

Sail into the holidays By JONATHON HOWARD

Noosa music producer Luke Williams has his sights set on greatness and he’s willing to work for it. Luke now hopes to continue using his skills to produce the best quality sounds and reach his ultimate goal to become a full-time music producer. “You have to make a lot of mistakes and keep striving for the best sound, while balancing the expectations of bands and musicians,” he said. “You have to want to be great - it doesn’t just happen.”

Luke works largely from Advanced Recording Studios in Noosaville where Sunshine Beach High students visit annually to record and experiment. Do you know someone excelling in their industry? Why not let Noosa Today know, we would love to hear from you by emailing: newsdesk@noosatoday.net.au

NOOSA kids wanting to learn how to sail can take advantage of the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club’s Youthsail Holiday Sailing program. Both the “Funsail” and the “Tackers” program are available to children aged six years and older. The little ones (six-12 years) have the opportunity to complete the Yachting Australia Tackers program, which is an introductory sailing course designed to introduce kids to sailing and water safety. The five-day program will run from Monday 7 July to Friday 11 July, from 9am to 1pm. Sailing manager Paul Blundell said the kids will receive the Yachting Australia Tackers Pack of Tshirt, water bottle and cap. “They also have a Certificate Presentation sausage sizzle on the Friday to finish things off,” he said

“For the little ones that have completed the Level 1, there will be both Level 2 and Level 3 offered each afternoon from 1pm until 5pm. All Tackers program cost $330 for the five-day program.” For the older kids, or for those that can only attend a day, Mr Blundell said the Funsail program was ideal. “Running each day from 10am ’til 4pm from Monday 7 July until Friday 11 July, the program will see the kids sailing up the Noosa River with an on-board qualified skipper and coach boat support,” he said. “The kids will cover an introduction to the Yachting Australia ‘Start Sailing Level 1’ course and also receive lunch and afternoon tea snack - the cost is $65 per day.” All bookings are via the NYRC website on www.nyrc.com.au or you can ring the sailing office on 5440 7407.

Silent majority? I AM very surprised to read (Noosa Today, 26 June, p5) that ‘the vast majority of people ... have a very strong wish to be amalgamated’. I don’t have a very strong wish to be amalgamated. In fact quite the reverse. And I know a few others who feel the same. Where is the evidence of this vast majority? Or is it merely rhetoric? Just saying something loudly and often enough does not breed consensus. Maybe a bit of respectful attention to the opinion of others might lead to a less divisive process. Maybe a ‘vast majority of people’ do NOT want to be amalgamated. Just a thought. Judy Hardy-Holden, Doonan.

Panel of principle THE proposal for a community jury panel recently floated at the Cooroy Residents’ Association meeting by mayor Noel Playford has much to commend it in principle - however, it all depends on the yet to be announced details. In the early discussions which led to the formation of Noosa Independence Alliance, the issue of how to implement ongoing and effective community input to council policy and decisionmaking was a key area of debate. One suggestion was that a non-compulsory election should be held to select panel members, another was that they be nominated by major community groups and associations. I understand that the current idea is to select jury members according to community profile, from a broader random sample who would be invited by letter to take part in a panel on a specific issue. Before any such proposal comes before the

full council, I believe there needs to be wider consultation on the options available, which are not necessarily restricted to the three methods mentioned. I feel in any event that the word ‘jury’ is inappropriate - the panel’s degree of authority needs to be adequately defined in the constitution of the council. There is a lot of middle ground between a toothless public forum, authorised simply to discuss ideas and make suggestions, and a ‘jury’ empowered to make decisions at the same level as elected councillors. My own preferred model would be a single panel, democratically selected without council influence, which would have the same level of authority to make proposals to council as the council staff do now. Such a panel would operate at quite a different level to that of the former Biosphere Sector Boards, though interaction and joint consultation would seem to be essential. I’m sure there are others who have different and possibly better ideas. Now is the time for them to be brought forward and evaluated. Noel Bird, Boreen Point.

plenty to say about spraying, but they don’t take me up on my offer for them to hand weed 5000 square metres for some reason. P.S I try not to spray the poor bees! John Whittingham, Doonan.

Song in her heart GOOD things do happen. I wanted everyone to know how helpful the team at Tewantin Furniture Removals have been. I decided to donate my great grandmother’s piano to the dementia unit at Carramar. I wanted it to go to a good home. Hopefully the residents will get enjoyment from having it there. A few sing-alongs to bring a bit of the past into the present. I phoned Tewantin Furniture Removals to ask a huge favour. Could they help me get my lovely old “heavy” German piano from our place to Carramar. They said yes straight away. This morning they came and took her away with such good grace given the weighty circumstances. I am very grateful. Libby Day, Tewantin.

Then pull ’em out

Re-zoning view

RE THE weeds issue: Residents of any area who don’t like weed spraying, are welcome to form groups to pull the weeds out, roots and all, in really wet weather when the ground is soft and put them into bags. Then go back every two weeks and repeat. If they are not willing to do this then the usual alternative remains. I always find it amusing that people don’t come up with alternative solutions; they behave as though the problem doesn’t exist, and that the solution currently in use is in itself the problem! I’ve had people here on my property with

AS A very long-time resident of Eumundi I feel compelled to write regarding the movement afoot to rezone the Eumundi/Doonan/Verriadale area from Sunshine Coast Council to the newly reformed Noosa Council. The ratepayers are entitled to be informed of the full details of such a move - as ultimately they will be the people footing the bill! Why does this minority group see the need for this action? What is the cost of such a move? Who will pay the massive costs involved? Why weren’t all ratepayers asked to complete their survey, and not just the handful of the latte-sipping set who frequent two small coffee shops in Eumundi and Doonan? We are well served by the Sunshine Coast Council and well represented by Councillors S. Robinson and G. Rogerson. If this group truly believe that their idea will advantage all residents in these areas, why not be up-front and tell us the true story! For those of us who do not believe there is anything to be gained by such a move, please speak up now. Concerned resident, Vonnie Burton, Eumundi.

Just sick of it WE ARE sick and tired of reading those long, long “letters” in your paper from “climate change whingers”. Honestly. They take up too much room (almost half the space given to “letters”) and whinge, whinge. Don’t they get it? Not everyone cares. We all do our best to look after our

climate. So why give the “climate change fanatics” so much space? Joy Ringrose also gets too much space in “letters” - she is a politician and should not be given so much “free” coverage in letters. She should pay for her own political views in other parts of your newspaper - not be given free speech in the place allowed for more personal points of view. Sick of it. R. Welsh and P. Stubbs, Noosa Heads.

Thanks a bunch THANKYOU to everyone who kindly donated new underwear, socks and toiletries to the IFYS organisation, to help keep homeless people warm and comfortable this winter. Every donation is greatly appreciated. We received many wonderful donations from inspiring locals such as Mrs Narelle Blair, a resident of the Noosa Nursing Centre in Tewantin, who gathered her donation over few months while enjoying playing and winning at bingo that the diversional therapist organises for the centre’s residents. Megan Wilson, Maroochydore.

Pull over, slowpoke IF YOU happen to be one of the lucky retirees who enjoy a morning drive around Noosa, and wonder why every time you look in your rearview mirror and there is up to 30 or 40 cars right behind you, It’s because you are driving at 60-65 km/h in a100km/h zone. So please, do the right thing, pull over to the side of the road, have your morning nap, and let the working people of Noosa (yes there is such a thing!) get to work on time. It would be truly appreciated, thank you. Dom Massoni, Verrierdale.

Roundup’s ultra dangerous REGARDING the recent discussions about Roundup’s glysophate. From my understanding, glysophate was ranked the fourth most dangerous pesticide of 143 to humans in 1986. When glyphosate degrades, much of it is converted to formaldehyde. The inert ingredient (poea) with dioxane (cahan) lengai in Roundup is more toxic to humans that the glysophate itself, according to poisons activist and scientist Kev Sims. This widely used spray no doubt makes its way into Lake McDonald waterways and eventually the ocean. I wouldn’t be drinking the water there without filters. The council can pay some people to slash and we can relearn to tolerate some untidiness. What is more important? We lived without these sprays for thousands of years. Yes it is convenient and easier. Kimm Woodward, Noosaville.

Checklist for big move By MICHELLE WATT WHETHER it’s your first home or an investment property to add to your portfolio, buying a property is quite often one of the biggest financial decisions you will make. While it is a complex process, it is one that can be streamlined by conveyancers with experience and understanding of the law. Engaging an experienced conveyancer to conduct the conveyance of your property is an important step, but you can be even more prepared by following a few simple steps. Before you enter into a contract, research the market and your local area. Don’t forget to do the figures so you know what you can spend and afford to repay, taking into account the cost of stamp duty, searches, mortgage fees and legal fees. Once you have found your dream home, choose a loan and apply for pre-approval and then it’s time to negotiate a price with the agent.

Stellar Conveyancing’s Michelle Watt has over 25 years’ experience in conveyancing. As a local, Michelle knows the Noosa and Sunshine Coast real estate market and has expert tips and guidance for Noosa Today readers looking to sell their home. This week, Michelle shares her buyer’s checklist. Before signing a contract, make sure you choose the correct buying entity such as an individual, trust, company or super fund. Once you have chosen your legal representation, advise your agent of their contact details and forward the contract to your conveyancer

for review before you sign it. After you have entered into a contract, forward a copy of the signed contract to your conveyancer. You will now need to arrange insurance cover for the property, as well as arrange building and pest inspection reports, and submit a formal application for finance if required. Engaging an experienced conveyancer will help you understand all the intricate details of the process, especially if purchasing as trustee. It’s important to understand all forms you are signing as well as the entire process from searching for a property to signing the contract and settlement. The team at Stellar Conveyancing have decades of experience both collectively and solely. We can help take the stress out of your transaction and give you peace of mind. For more information or to book an appointment, phone Michelle or one of the other Stellar Conveyancers on 1300 51 61 71.

She’s simply the best By JOLENE OGLE IT WAS the vision of Tina Turner - all big hair, long legs and strong voice - on a black and white TV that ignited five-year-old Rebecca O’Connor’s passion for performing. “I saw her and heard the power in her voice, and I said to my dad, this is what I want to do,” she said. Rebecca, who was adopted by Irish parents Anne and Michael O’Connor at the age of two-and-a-half months, said she felt a sense of belonging and resemblance when she first saw Tina Turner. “I had grown up in such a white environment and seeing Tina Turner, it felt like home,” she said. “I think she is the most powerful and brave woman I have ever come across.” A national tour brought Rebecca to our shores in 2010, where she has since enjoyed successful tours with sell-out shows. With each performance, Rebecca received outstanding praise, standing ovations and one of the biggest compliments of her life from the woman herself. “Rebecca is so good, she’s scary. If I had her energy, I would still be touring today,” Tina Turner has said. According to Rebecca, there is no better compliment. “I won a big competition in Europe, Stars in Their Eyes. “I had a high profile in Europe and that’s when she heard of me,” she said. “It is the biggest compliment I have ever received in

my life, to be honest with you,” she said. “I’m amazed by it… overwhelmed by it… to be personally endorsed by her is just a dream come true.” When asked what keeps her grounded, Rebecca said a life free from alcohol, drugs and cigarettes has helped her live in a negativity free world. “Performing is my high,” she said. “It is the only high I get and I don’t need anything else… I also have lots of early nights and meditate daily… a real party animal, I am,” she joked. Rebecca is due to embark on her next national tour ‘Rebecca O’Connor is Simply the Best’, which will bring the effervescent performer to the Sunshine Beach Surf Club for one night only. The crowd will be treated to breath-taking live performances of hits such as Nutbush City Limits, Proud Mary and Private Dancer. The show is expected to sell out, so don’t miss your chance to see Rebecca with her wild hair, sparkling mini dress, red lipstick and stiletto heels do the undisputed Queen of rock and roll pure justice in a performance that can only be described as “Simply the Best”. Rebecca will perform at Sunshine Beach Surf Club on 12 July, from 8pm. Tickets are available now at $25 for members and $27.50 for non-members. Phone 5447 5491 to secure your ticket.

Top playwright lauds arts theatre AUSTRALIAN playwright David Williamson has sung the praises of Noosa Art Theatre, describing the venue as “one of the best and most comfortable theatres on the Sunshine Coast”. Williamson, who has written over 50 plays plus the classic Anzac movie, Gallipoli, first visited the Noosa Arts Theatre in 1996 with his wife, Kristin, to see a performance of one of his plays. “I went along with some trepidation as some of the community theatre productions I’d seen of my work left a lot to be desired,” Williamson said. “It was mid-summer and the only cooling was by means of ancient fans that were so loud that the dialogue couldn’t be heard, even from the fifth row back and within five minutes my wife Kristin had gone to sleep.” But now, almost 20 years later, Williamson said the theatre was a credit to the enthusiasm, hard work and dedication of all those involved in the venue’s transformation. The latest upgrades including reupholstered seats, new lighting, paint, curtains and carpets, plus a hearing loop, will be revealed during the coming OneAct Play festival on 3 July. It’s not too late to secure your ticket to the Noosa Arts Theatre One-Act Play festival that will feature three plays; The

All roads lead to Noosa BENNY’S BEAT BENNY PIKE

NOOSA is about to come alive with the events that stand us apart from other destinations. I’m not forgetting the Food and Wine Festival or the Noosa half marathon but over the next few months, the world evolves around Noosa. Longweekend, Jazz and Triathlon Events really draw the attention to this once sleepy fishing village. It wasn’t that long ago, the early ’80s when the first major event lined up, the Doonan Picnic races. The search wasn’t hard to find the appropriate celebrity to help draw the crowd. Recently appointed Australian Women’s Weekly fashion editor Maggie Tabberer led the parade,

NOOSA Today Takes 10 with outgoing Rotary Club of Noosa president Tess Alexandroff, who spent two years as club president and was the region’s first female president. Tell us something that no one knows about you?

when she joined hundreds of locals in what could have been a day at the Oaks or Melbourne Cup. The fashion icon has always looked spectacular, but she was challenged by many who frocked up for the event. The former Beauty and the Beast star was joined by Queensland’s greatest Rugby League rival Tommy Raudonikis and future Immortal Clive Churchill. There was a big crowd and six races, but every time the horses galloped down the straight and past the post, a dust storm followed that completely engulfed the main marquee. It didn’t deter the ladies, who just dusted themselves off and had another class of bubbles. The 1980 Blues skipper, showed why he was regarded as one of the toughest players to play the game and didn’t like losing at any cost. Tommy and I lined up for a sprint I’ve been skydiving before. It was my granddaughter’s up-coming birthday and she wanted to skydive, but only if I’d join her. So we jumped out of a plane at 14,000 feet after we took off from the Caboolture airfield.

What do you love most about Noosa? I love the friendliness of Noosa people and the calm country feel Noosa with a lot of the cosmopolitan influences.

down the straight giving the older Churchill a 10 metre start. Tom’s words before the start “let’s have some fun and let Clive win’’. Sure, sounded good to me, but at the 40-metre mark the cheeky halfback tackled me, and stepped on my back and head before running to the finish line. When I caught up with him on the finish line, his answer to why he tackled me, was “mate you didn’t think I was going to let you beat me’’. Oh well, being tackled by the league great and being in a race with an immortal of the game, it really didn’t matter and we enjoyed a drink and still share a friendship today. The Picnic Races continued, but I don’t think they matched that day when Maggie, Tommy and Clive introduced themselves to an unsuspecting crowd of locals who only he always made an extra effort, which I admired.

Who do you respect most in politics? Politicians disappoint me especially these days. They promise the world and don’t deliver. They need to stand up and take responsibility for their actions.

If you could be any animal, which one would you be?

If you could be anyone who would it be?

I’d be a cat. They always get to

went for a day out to do something different. Of course, that difference is what gives Noosa’s events the edge over similar coast activities. I am not saying they are better, more so, there is a different feeling and, of course, far less travel. I find it a little interesting that the Bendigo Bank has taken on the major sponsorship of this year’s Longweekend. I thought Bendigo was a community bank that supported local feel good promotions and not a big nationally-acclaimed production like the Longweekend. I’m sure the LW organisers class their event as national and not community. I’ll have to ask bank spokesman Rick Cooper next time I see him. Until next time. have their own way.

Most memorable sporting moment? When the Australian cricket team won the Ashes back. I enjoy watching test cricket especially the Ashes.

Favourite place to visit in Noosa? I just enjoy a simple coffee and a walk along the beach and getting the sand between my toes. But I also enjoy my own time.

Brush turkeys running riot LIFE OF BRINE PHIL JARRATT

Reigning Vans Logger Pro champion Harrison Roach. our preference for lush, natural gardens over the manicured English variety. So now the turkey roams free, creating backyard havoc while we cower in our homes, saying shoo, or perhaps suggesting that they might be interested in combining sex and travel. At least this is what I suggest as I watch from the window of my study while my wife chases them from one end of the yard to the other, waving a broom. Wanting to help, but having a phobia about turkey-infested backyards, I went on-line. “Brush turkeys can be destructive in gardens as they remove vegetation, earth and mulch to create incubation mounds,” one site advised. “Once a male brush turkey has started to build its mound, he will not stop. No single method of deterrence has proved effective.” Various websites offered helpful hints to minimise damage - like removing all natural shade from the garden or spreading tarps over the growing mounds to slow down production - but the basic thrust was this: turkeys rule, we are stuffed. I Googled “brush turkey recipes”, thinking that if I could convince Jim Berardo to feature perhaps a presumptuous brush turkey ragout cooked in platypus fat with a side of sliced fairy penguin, the world would be dazzled by this culinary audacity and the problem would be solved. I thought I’d hit pay dirt when I found Vogue

Australia (a Tory rag if ever there was one) promising “brush turkey with melted butter and maple syrup”. Unfortunately, this turned out to be an instruction for a rather intricate preparation of a Christmas turkey, rather than a recipe for road kill. It seems to be a Mexican stand-off. At great expense you can have wildlife chappies catch them and take them away, but what would be the point? They have at least 43 cousins living next door, and they have no respect for personal space. It might be time to call Clive Palmer. After last week’s resolution of the climate change problem, it seems he can do anything. He could corral them at Palmersaurus Park and train them to be future senators. Wouldn’t take much. Trampling over legislation would be second nature. Surf Festival 2015 set to launch The 2015 edition of the Noosa Festival of Surfing will be launched at the beginning of August, with a stellar line-up of events and special guests

to be announced, plus new heights of global media coverage. Entries in amateur age divisions will also open on 1 August on www.noosafestivalofsurfing.com. This will be my 13th year as director of the festival, with only a few years off since 1998, and I’m looking forward to working with manager Sam Smith to maximise community involvement in the world’s biggest surfing event. We’ve got a new look courtesy of LED Design of Noosaville, and it will be on display as our marketing campaign begins next month. This year we had more than 600 entries from 14 countries, and we’re looking to improve on that. But more importantly, we want to showcase Noosa as one of the world’s leading surf holiday destinations. Hopefully, we’ll be able to do that from the position of being home to Australia’s newest National Surfing Reserve. More on that in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, for sponsorship or competitor entry information, email info@noosafestivalofsurfing.com.

DURING our recent absence overseas, brush turkeys seized our backyard, ripping apart vegies, flowers, vines and herbs. This was not the first home invasion the skinny, scraggy-necked mongrels have mounted, but it was the worst, and by God it had better be the last. To quote the late, lamented Peter Finch in Network: ‘I’m as mad as hell and I’m not gonna take it any more’. Well, actually it’s my wife who is more upset. But she gardens and I write columns, so here we are. In fact, I only go into the backyard to jump in the pool or hang my wetsuits out to dry, but as it happens I’ve loathed the gobbling galoots since they first started to take over Noosa about 20 years ago, and if you don’t believe they have, get up early and drive down Hastings Street to the Woods at first light. There you will encounter some thousands of the protected native megapodes, eating scraps out of bins, window shopping at the few remaining fashion stores, waiting for Aroma’s to open, looking for a garden bed to totally trash. It could be a scene out of Mad Max V, but it’s Noosa after hours, or in this case, before hours. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for protecting our native flora and fauna, and the brush, bush or scrub turkey, found across Australasia, the Indies and Polynesia, is a native bird protected under a swag of legislation that can impose hefty fines for those who interfere with its natural functions, such as trashing everything you hold dear. But according to urban ecologist Daryl Jones, who has been studying brush turkeys for more than 30 years, they are proliferating at a rate that has taken them a long way from endangered status. Jones told the ABC that the urban variety nearly died off during the Great Depression because people were eating them to survive, and when prosperity returned in the 1950s numbers didn’t increase quickly because if they appeared in a backyard “people would just wring their necks.” Mr Jones also believes that in recent times we have encouraged the turkey population through

weekend round-up

Piece of paradise SALES, busy home opens and an increase in overseas interest were the exciting highlights of the week for Richardson and Wrench Noosa. Principal Shane McCauley said a number of recent sales had bolstered the team’s confidence in a recovering market. The most recent sales include a luxurious home in Sunrise Beach that was only on the market briefly, while a penthouse in Noosaville is now under contract and a couple of apartments in Hastings Street, Noosa Parade and Little Cove are also expected to go.

“We are selling a lot of properties to expats from Singapore and Hong Kong currently,” Shane said.

out to the rainforest, a large deck at the rear and a very open plan layout.

“Which is a good sign our market is continuing to improve.”

“There is plenty of confidence around Little Cove. In the last six months there has been a $4 million sale on a smaller block and another at $3.6 million, so this property definitely represents good value at $2 million,” Cam said.

R&W Noosa sales agent Cam Goode has also had a good week, recently listing the second biggest block in Little Cove. The five-bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home sits on 1373 square metres of land and is only 100 metres from the entrance to the Noosa National Park. The home features a 10-metre high glass front looking

Shane said shining sun had made an impact on the increase in sales and buyer interest. “The days are absolutely stunning at the moment and buyers are once again falling in love with Noosa, and just want their own little piece of paradise,” he said.

The new owners can enjoy privacy and seclusion in the main home, with a large fireplace in the living room the ideal place for rest and relaxation on a cold winter’s night.

On offer is an already established cottage-stay business and homestead, with a current revenue of $100k per annum.

A large kitchen features all of the modern conveniences including a breakfast bar for casual dining and ample bench and storage space.

Three luxurious villas are located a short distance from the colonial-style main residence on the property’s 96 acres, and a search of tourism sites reveals fabulous feedback for the wellestablished business. This north-facing property enjoys panoramic views across the famed Noosa hinterland, with the main house position to take full advantage of this sweeping vista. The home features two large bedrooms with an attached studio apartment that could be added to the cottage-stay portfolio or kept for private use as a guest retreat for family and friends.

A meals area and formal dining zone offer plenty of dining options and complete the living zone of the main home. The master suite features a built-in robe and spacious ensuite, while a second bedroom offers the perfect location for a home office in which to manage the on-site cottage stays. An outdoor living area and sparkling pool are an added bonus to their already breathtaking property. All this is located only 30 minutes from Hastings Street and the Sunshine Coast airport.

Palatial presentation AFTER 30 years of life in paradise, Noosa and Mooloolaba triathlon founder Garth Prowd and his wife Robyn are selling the family home in Sunshine Beach. The award-winning sportsman finally convinced Robyn to move even closer to the beach, despite their existing home being within a 10-minute walk from breaking waves. Robyn said Garth had wanted to move about six years ago, but instead they overhauled the home to create something truly spectacular - resulting in a luxurious plantation style design making the most of the enveloping scenery and an indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Century 21 Conolly Hay Group principal Mike Hay said prospective buyers will be swept off their feet upon their first, second and every following inspection of this exclusive listing. With an unassuming and understated street appearance,

it’s hard to imagine the beauty that lies beyond the secure gated entrance.

the weather, with automated blinds and sheltered patios.

“Number 57 Parkedge Drive, Sunshine Beach is one of the most superb, if not the best, homes available currently for sale in Noosa,” Mike said.

refurbishment to include an amazing master retreat, and

“The moment you enter the front gate you will be left breathless as the panoramic scenery encapsulates you. This vista is hard to come by, and there is no other view like it available on the Sunshine Coast. “Spanning from Noosa River, Lake Weyba to the hinterland and Cooroy Mountain, all the way from Sunshine Beach to Coolum, Mooloolaba and on to Buderim and Caloundra the nights come to life with views over the citylights as far as the hills of Montville and Flaxton hinterland.” Set on a massive 1570 square metres, this home was cleverly re-designed to enjoy the outdoors no matter what

Once a single-level home, it was built-up during its 2008 when you don’t think the view can get any better just walk upstairs to see an even higher and further vantage. With a birds ey’e outlook over the coast you will feel as though you are on top of the world, in your own private hide-away, yet so close to everything. Walk through Noosa National Park to Hastings Street, be in Noosa Junction in minutes and walk to the eclectic mix of boutique shopping and dining in Sunshine Beach village. For your opportunity to purchase this once in a lifetime residence, contact Mike Hay on 0417 624 059 to arrange a private inspection.

Webjet landing IT WAS a courageous move by Webjet founder and chairman David Clarke, who has landed a great new home in our very own Sunrise Beach. Mr Clarke said he chose Sunrise Beach because it offered privacy and peace. “It is somewhat insulated from intense tourist traffic,” he said. “Close to everything, but also far enough away. Unlike the Gold Coast, which is like living in a city, Sunrise has a more settled feel.” The sale comes after two years of house hunting by Mr Clarke, who has now purchased a four-bedroom home in Courageous Court, Sunrise Beach. Richardson and Wrench Noosa sales agent Cam Goode secured the sale and says the home has a stunning outlook across Sunrise Beach as well as panoramic ocean views. Cam had been marketing the property for just over a month and said both Mr Clarke and the previous owners were satisfied with the result. “There appears to be much more confidence in the higher end Sunrise homes, as there have been numerous $1 million plus sales over the past six months,” Cam said. “There is no better feeling than achieving a quick and successful sale for my owners, as they have already found their next home and this deal allows peace of mind for them.” 10 Realestate Lifestyle | Thursday, 3 July, 2014

A slice of heaven

BY ROGER PLASTOW IS THIS heaven? Yes, it’s Sunshine Beach.

on site and punches way above its weight. But lots of places have good coffee shops so what else could make Sunshine Beach special?

I haven’t yet been able to draw up a definitive list but I know where I want to spend infinity and beyond - at Sunshine Beach.

There’s a little restaurant, Mooshka, that’s chic and informal. The tables and chairs are a real mixture of old stuff. Remember the kitchen tables with laminated tops? Mooshka’s got ’em. There are chunky old wooden stools too heavy for me to move, but finding an empty one is the usual problem. You name it - if it’s old but ‘classical’, it’s there. (I’m talking about the furniture, not some of the diners.)

So determined am I to spend the after-life in this special place I have issued instructions to my family - bury my ashes on the rugged outcrops at the northern end of Sunshine Beach. It’s probably the closest I will ever get to heaven.

Come to think of it, there are a dozen eating and drinking establishments in a 200-metre strip offering variety rarely found in a little village, and all of them are top quality giving excellent value for money.

Interring human ashes in a national park is probably illegal but that won’t be my problem. I doubt a posthumous charge of loitering with intent would score a conviction, even in a Queensland court. (I don’t have tattoos or a motorbike and there will only be one of me so I’m flying under the radar. Talk about a rebel without a cause).

Plus, of course, there’s the award-winning surf club that has views worth photographing, bottling, preserving, and sending to people you don’t like with a note ‘I’m here’, just to make them jealous.

I have spent years trying to identify special places in the world I want to visit before my toes curl up and I head to that great tourist destination in the sky.

I can see it now. The anything-but-sombre ashes internment ceremony will take place on an appropriate day, probably April Fool’s Day, under the guise of a large family picnic. Why anyone would picnic on the side of a rugged rocky outcrop I don’t know, but ‘strange’ is a family trait. I don’t know who will be there but I know my three adult offspring and partners will be drinking heavily, trying to dull the pain inflicted by the debts they inherited. But I digress. There’s something special about Sunshine Beach, nestled in Noosa National Park. I don’t know what it is, but I do know it has, at least in part, something to do with food and wine because I start salivating every time I begin driving up the highway from Brisbane. Could it be the coffee shop, Costa Noosa Espresso, that serves the best coffee this side of Italy and maybe even the other side too? Their multi-award winning coffee is roasted 14 Realestate Lifestyle | Thursday, 3 July, 2014

Sunshine Beach is a foodie’s delight but it’s not just the food. And while the physical beauty of the place is intoxicating, there’s still more to it. It is, of course, the people who make the difference. The locals are simply down-to-earth, friendly, genuine souls. And their attitude to life and the people around them is infectious, making it near impossible for visitors to be anything different. The locals and the regular visitors (pseudo/wannabe Sunshine Beach Bums like me), seem to bring out the best in people. In our block of units there are two couples from England and we make them feel welcome. Yes, we eat and drink with Poms on the proviso that, if there’s whinging to be done, we do it. There’s also a couple from Melbourne and we like them too. Where else in Australia could you get that sort of allembracing, outpouring of love and affection? It’s only minutes from upmarket Hastings St at Noosa but it

has retained its village atmosphere and the associated charm. When you go for a walk people say g’day. When you walk along the beach you can strike up a conversation almost any time you want to. Even the dogs at the dog-permitted northern end of the beach are friendly. When the time comes for me to depart this mortal life (I’ve set the date - February 4, 2049), that’s the environment I want to ‘live’ in. That’s the view I want to see for eternity. And if my family and friends ever feel a bit down, or need their sense of humour batteries recharged, I hope they wander up to my resting place with a reasonably good bottle of red and share utopia with me. FOOTNOTE: Oh, by the way, did I mention the additional specific instructions? Well, my ashes are to be placed in an empty magnum that now contains a limited edition 2009 Penfolds Claret (bottle number 1443), a Coonawarra shiraz/ cabernet blend. Yes, the label does say ‘claret’. It’s a long story about how and why Penfolds did it so I won’t bore you with the details. You can Google it if you’re interested or jealous. The magnum is already packaged in a delightful red case with all the trimmings so burial expenses will be kept to a minimum. (I’m half Scottish). Why would I want this? Well, I have a penchant for red wine taken for medicinal purposes only (I’m actually a health and fitness fanatic on permanent annual leave) and I think Sunshine Beach is right up there with the best places in the world - yes, the world. One day the thought hit me. Why not, I mused, combine three of this world’s greatest treasures - red wine, Sunshine Beach, and me? Why not take the other two treasures with me when I cross over to wherever I’m going? The only thing I have to do before the big event is drink the ‘claret’ from bottle number 1443. The wine is now rapidly appreciating in value and ageing gracefully and delightfully ... just like me.

Warm it up for winter Now is the perfect time to grab someone special and warm things up with one of the great dinner-for-two deals on offer this winter in Noosa. LOCAL restaurants are making the most of the cold snap by offering hot deals that are sure to get your night off to a hot and steamy start. Lamb shanks are a winter must-have, with two great restaurants offering deals on slow cooked lamb shanks. Zachary’s Gympie Terrace and Peregian Beach have two serves of lamb shanks plus a bottle of wine for only $48, available Sunday to Thursday. Meanwhile long-time Noosaville favourite Maisie’s is serving up your choice of one or two lamb shanks with minted pea mash and steamed vegetables, to help keep the cold away. If you’re looking for a romantic night out, Shades Cafe and Wine Bar, Noosa Junction, has the Taste of Shades dinner for two deal where, for only $44

dollars, you and your beloved can enjoy parmesan and pesto bread, a selection of tapas and a glass of beer or wine each. Vanilla Cafe and Restaurant, Noosaville, is thriving under new management with two dinner deals on offer this season. Snap up two main meals and a bottle of wine from their selected menu for only $50, or treat yourself to dinner, wine and dessert for only $60. For a little luxury and a memorable night out, try the Noosa Boathouse two-course dinner for just $30 per person. these iconic markets come to life every Saturday from 7.00am until 2pm and every Wednesday from 8am until 1.30pm - rain, hail or shine. www.eumundimarkets.com.au

A DESIRE for a sea change and the alluring beauty of the Sunshine Coast hinterland brought Sarah Rose to Eumundi where she now owns and operates Eumundi Dental. Since opening the doors in August 2013, Sarah said she had come to love the locals who are always happy to stop for a chat. “I am a bit of a chatterbox and really find that the Eumundi locals are always happy to have a chat and so far, everyone I have met has been really lovely,” Sarah said. There is a lot to love about Eumundi, according to Sarah, who said the great cafes, awesome pubs and dress shops were a great way to spend a day. “I also don’t mind wandering through the markets on my days off, either,” she said. As can be the problem with something so popular, Sarah said the biggest challenge of working in Eumundi was trying to find a park on market day. “But I have worked around this and have decided to not open on market days. This enables me time to catch up on my bookwork,” she said. You can find Eumundi Dental at 77 Memorial Drive, Eumundi. Phone 5442 7556 to book your appointment.

Owned by long-time locals Richie and Catherine, Richies’ Bakery has been in Eumundi for 15 months, with previous bakeries in Cooroy and Tewantin for more than six years. The dynamic duo are third-generation bakers, who learnt all they know from their father. “We make a variety of cakes, pies and bread,” Catherine said. “And don’t forget our famous apple pies, especially in these colder months.” “Birthday cakes or any celebration cake can be made, just ask and we will do our best to make whatever you need.” Richies also offers wholesale, with prices on application. Tried and tested nougat THE Australian Nougat Company has manufactured Macadamia Bliss Nougat on the Sunshine Coast for over 25 years. All of the nougat created contains dry roasted Macadamia nuts fresh from local plantations and, along with natural sugar cane, glucose, honey, egg white and vanilla, makes delicious French-style nougat with a unique Aussie flair. As the company evolved from a macadamia plantation, Australian Nougat Company uses macadamia nuts as their base ingredient. All nougat is handmade with no

artificial colours, flavours or preservatives and a range of flavours are available including almond and macadamia, chocolate ginger and cranberry and macadamia nougat. All 13 flavours are wheat and gluten free. You can find The Australian Nougat Company at 4 Tallgum Avenue, Eumundi. They are open Monday to Friday, from 8am to 4pm and Saturday, from 9am to 1pm.

Quiet end and quality NOOSA Hinterland Realty Eumundi principal Carol Dolan said Eumundi is a great place to live at the “quiet” end of the Sunshine Coast with savvy buyers snapping up properties in the unique community. “More and more people are living here for the lifestyle and working elsewhere,” she said. “This is evidenced by the strong demand we have for rent-

als of all types from small cottages to acreage properties. “Buyers are snapping up the remaining lots in new subdivisions and homes under $500,000 are proving very popular. “If you are looking to live or invest here you can’t go wrong!” Those who are looking to buy, sell or rent in the Noosa Hinterland should phone Carol on 5442 8333.

pet mate Council gets behind pets

1142669-PB27-14

NOOSA Council has thrown its support behind the RSPCA Queensland’s newest campaign targeting responsible pet ownership. The Operation: Wanted campaign urges pet owners to get their animals de-sexed to help reduce unwanted pets and overcrowding in animal care centres throughout the state. RSPCA Qld spokesperson Michael Beatty says the sad truth is a lot of unwanted animals are born because people haven’t bothered to get their pet de-sexed. “Many of those animals land with us and we’re already overburdened,” he said. “With this campaign, we’re hoping to reduce the intake into our animal care centres and local pounds.” Mr Beatty urges all pet owners to take advantage of the campaign, which offers 20 per cent off all de-sexing and microchip

procedures at participating vets. Five vets in the Noosa Shire have already registered with the RSPCA to offer the discounted rate, including Sunshine Coast Vet, Pomona; Maple St Vet, Cooroy; Tewantin Vet Surgery, Tewantin; Greencross Noosa Vet Surgery, Tewantin; and Sunshine Beach Vet Surgery, Sunshine Beach. Noosa Council has contributed $12,000 towards the campaign in a bid to help promote responsible pet ownership. The RSPCA takes in over 160,000 animals across Australia each year, many of which are the result of unplanned breeding. RSPCA Noosa Animal Care Centre manager Nicole Cleary says the centre is full and urges local families looking for a new pet to visit the centre and help give a furry friend a second chance. To see a list of participating vets, visit www.operationwanted.com.au.

sport Matt Brice in training for the State Cross Country Championships.

Rum City: country meets the coast By TONY FROST

In training By MICHELLE MOORE AT this time of year, most students have been busy studying for exams and are looking forward to relaxing in their holidays. However, for Noosa athletes Matt Brice, 10, and Josh Law, 11, most of their free time will be spent training for this year’s Primary Schools Cross Country State Championships. Matt and Josh have been training twice a week with Little Athletics Noosa for the past three months in preparation for the Cross Country Championships which will be held at John Paul College in Brisbane on 18-19 July. Josh Law, who attends St Thomas More Primary School, placed in the top five at the Cross Country Regional Trials in the 12yrs Boys and is

currently first reserve for the 12yrs Boys event. Matt Brice, who attends Good Shepherd Lutheran College, placed second at the Cross Country Regional Trials at the Maroochydore Cricket Grounds in May. This will be Matt’s second year competing at State Cross Country Championships and the first year running in the 11yrs Boys 3km event. “It’s pretty cool that I’ve qualified to go to State Cross Country again,” Matt said. “I’ve been doing a lot of hill training this year as the course at John Paul College has quite a few hill climbs, so hopefully I’ll do well.” Both athletes have also made it through to Schools District Athletics Championships, to be held in August, in a number of track and field events.

RUM City masters swim club hosted their annual swim meet on Saturday, 21 June. A real ‘country meets the coast’ atmosphere throughout the day, where four Noosa swimmers did their club proud. Wendy Ivanusec, Brian Hoepper, John Hordyk and Nic Pirie swam brilliantly to be shield winners for small clubs (3-6) category. Individual age group results: Male: 25-29 years, 1st place, Nic, 65-69 years, 1st place, Brian,

2nd place, John. Female: 7074 years: 4th place, Wendy. Thanks to the support members who contributed to the carnival’s success: Viv Merrill (referee), Lesley Hordyk, Geoff Merrill, and Ivan Ivanusec (timekeepers). Host club ended up the day as overall winners, while not to be outdone by those in the pool, Ivan cleaned up in the Bundaberg Rum competition, throwing a coin closest (twice) to a treasured sample of the the local Winners: Wendy Ivanusec, Brian Hoepper, John Hordyk and brew. Nic Pirie.

Boys in an impressive kick-start By JODIE BUSHBY UNDER 7 WHITE The boys kick-started their holidays with an impressive game of footy against Maroochydore at home. A sensational Player of the Match performance today by Zahn Bruggy. Zahn’s ball security is so tight that it could almost explode in his clutches. UNDER 7 YELLOW Outstanding plays from Riley O’Neill, Kyroan O’Donnell and Angus Cook. Superstar Tyran Malone played his best game all season, earning him Player of the Match. UNDER 7 BLUE Taj Brumley was a standout, stopping several attacking raids and making a heap of try saving tackles. Watch out under 7 Sunshine Coast sides because Hayden Andersen is back to his best, producing two bone-crunching tackles and making great metres straight up the middle. Jaxon Smith stepped up again today and must have made about 100 tackles but it was his devastating running that really caused shaking in the boots of the Maroochydore players. UNDER 8 One try saw the boys producing some excellent passes started by Roy Crozier onto Joh Dwyer finally onto Joshy Palmer to score a magnificent try. Some great running by Cody Reid, Cohyn North,

Dylan Alchin, Hamish Cook and Taj Egea. Great defence by Liam Dunkinson, Benny Graf, Lachlan Neville. UNDER 9 BLUE Tammin Lange took the ball up hard and needed an icepack for all her hard work! Kye Brumley was committed in defence and Nathaniel Noe chased anything that moved! The team’s passing was greatly improved this week, with players looking to offload and with some great backing up by Ryan Fielding-Smith, he managed to get over for a try. Sam Pershouse did some great passing from dummy half and really involved himself in the game this week, earning himself Player of the Match! UNDER 9 WHITE This week the boys played at home against Maroochydore. What a great game of rugby league! A big thanks to the boys from Noosa Blue who helped us out with a couple of extra players. UNDER 10 WHITE The boys played at home this week against Maroochydore on what fast turned into a miserable afternoon. Jackson and Jesi out injured and Corben on holidays, saw Cooper play a great game at full back with Antonio, Jarred and Larz tackling hard and running fast. Larz was this week’s Player of the Match. UNDER 10 BLUE Maroochydore travelled to Noosa this week to play Under 10 Blue. It was a great game.

1143030-CB27-14

UNDER 10 YELLOW It was an awesome performance by the U10 Yellow Pirates who played Maroochydore. Massive effort by the boys with a big mention to Player of the Match Kynan Allen who worked tirelessly all game. UNDER 11 BLUE The team had an outstanding game and chalked up another win proving that their hard training is paying off and they are reaping the rewards on the field for it. UNDER 12 Second half had both teams making lots of heavy tackles, making offence very tough. Noosa thought they had a third try with Steely Jai running onto a lovely kick before it was disallowed. UNDER 14 B Today we watched 11 brave boys play their guts out against the best team in the competition with a full list of 17 players. Special mention to our Men of the Match, under 13C players Liam O’Hanlon and Chase Mackesney. Both the boys were outstanding and showed what club spirit is all about by stepping up a grade and helping us out. To turn up today and still put in 110 per cent knowing that it was going to be very hard shows the character that you have. UNDER 15 The Noosa fighting spirit shone through in what was a tough game. A 14-all scoreboard was a fitting end to the game as both sides fought hard. Well done, champions.

The ladies’ triples title was taken by Daphne Reed, Valerie Bush and Sharyn Briggs who scored a convincing win over Pat Teale, Ursula Ford and Marie McCall, getting finished just before a heavy rain shower flooded the green on Saturday. The men’s veteran pairs final was a closefought thriller, with an extra end required to finally find the winner. Bob King and Joe Pantry took the title from previous winners Ray McComb and Les James. Next Monday 7 June sees the last of this year’s Noosa 1500 open pairs events, sponsored by Options Eye Care. Once again, a capacity field of 48 teams will play, including many bowlers from around the Coast and interstate.

Wednesday ladies went to Et Kellett and Carol Coole with runners-up to Wendy Jarrett and Beryl Nelson. Friday Jackpot Pairs winners were Mal Lloyd and Ron Wallish over Steve Bowie and Mel Hobbins. Saturday social triples games were abandoned after four ends because of heavy showers. However, the men’s pennant trial players came out again after the skies cleared with the afternoon’s winners being Ross Ward, Ralphe Rickman and Walter Zemler. – The Chalker IN THE DITCH A full green, happy players and a sumptuous high tea for afternoon tea saw the inaugural Cooroy Community Bowls Club Ladies Day last Thursday a runaway success. We would like to thank all visiting teams and our sponsors, Guardian Pharmacy, Belvedere Newsagency and Richie’s Bakery for their kind donations of prizes. Tuesday Jackpot Pairs were Fred Bravo and Geoff Green. Runners-up were Margaret Dawson, Brian Cunnington and Jim Donald. The rain prevented full play on Saturday but the winners who went home with the prize money were Gary Kenzler and Col Nadler. Lester Krosch and Kerry Knowles were runners-up. The first round of the Triples Men’s and Women’s Championships in the morning saw very close games. The ladies’ finals will be next week, with the men playing off in the semi-finals. Brekky Bowls was again a great success. Even though it was a cold frosty start to the day, our delicious breakfast warmed our hearts and our tummies. An enjoyable game of triples followed with Jeanette Porter, Iris Mulvenney and Russell Butler the victors by one point. – Julie Ainscough

TIGER TALK JULIAN PITTS

THE Fiona Winter Realty/PJ Burns Noosa Tigers have set up an enthralling top of the table clash with league heavyweights Mayne after a very gruelling, hard-fought 26 point victory over Caloundra, last weekend. Much praise must go to the Caloundra boys who, for three quarters, attacked the ball with ferocity and were leading their more fancied rivals to the footy. The wet weather seemed to aid the Panthers smaller brigade and while Noosa held sway for the majority of the match, there was little in it on the scoreboard at the main break. The free kick count was heavily stacked in Caloundra’s favour, which generally indicates they were first in for the ball and that’s exactly what was happening. The third quarter was very similar to the first two with neither side able to assert any real scoreboard ascendancy. Noosa continued to overuse the ball by hand in the slippery conditions, however key players Isles, Buntain, McKittrick and Hendrie were starting to have an influence and get clear of some impressive early tags. It was Noosa by 9 points at the final change. An early goal to Caloundra had the Tigers faithful supporters a tad on edge before

Noosa Tiger (19) Troy ‘evil’ Duke contests for the ball the Noosa boys answered and clearly outran the Panthers to record a solid and important 26 point victory. The win keeps the Tigers two games clear in second position and sets up a must see clash with the undefeated Mayne in Brisbane, this Saturday. Centre half back and 2012 club champion Ryley Buntain was the best for the Tigers continually repelling Caloundra’s attack and impressing the crowd with risky and inventive deference. very important goals and clearly the best forward on the ground. Three time club champion Cubby Isles shook his tag in the second half to seemingly grab possessions at will in the final quarter to be a major factor in the victory. Meanwhile Hendrie, Wallace and Fulton continued their great form over the past six weeks. So, all set for a massive encounter this Saturday. The Tigers have plenty of upside personnel-wise with gun trio Davis, Dempsey and Rogers all set to return after needing a rest. Tommy

Keehan and Isaac Hughson will also be putting their hands up for selection. Can`t wait! A massive thank you to official AFL legend Bob Skilton for his role in our once again hugely popular and successful President’s Lunch and to all those who help set up these functions. Bob’s insight into his own era and his positive outlook on the game and, in particular his beloved Sydney Swans, was clearly memorable to all those in attendance. See you at the footy Saturday. GO TIGERS! Cheers, Pittsy

SPORT TODAY

Clear end to the season By ANITA ANDERSON Junior Grand Finals, 25 June UNDER a clear blue sky and with the temperature plummeting, a marvellous afternoon was had at the junior grand finals to end the winter season. The Under-10 division got the afternoon underway with a sickness ravaged Cool Runnings being beaten in a courageous effort against a better team in the Maroons. The Maroons, who have set the standard all season, were relentless in their attack. It was a mighty effort by all of the players on the field. The Purple Panthers played a great game against Good Shepherd which came away with the win by just one touchdown. Blazers and Twisters played an entertaining match with Blazers eventually coming out on top. The improvement in skills and match play within the U10s has been outstanding this season. Team players of the season for their sportsmanship, support and respect for their own team mates, opposition and officials were Maddie Dwyer and Zayne Miller.

Next in the line-up for grand final glory saw games in the U12 division. The Saints, under the guidance of Baz, had a convincing win over That Cool Team. The Banana Splits and Good Shepherd played well but the Splits were just too good on the day. The final match in this division saw the Purple Storm girls saving their best performance until last with a well earned win over Steppers. Team players for U12s were Morgan Maher and Noah Kelly. Moving on into the U14/16 division saw a battle of the boys between the ironically (considering the icy conditions) named Inferno and NDSHS 8s boys. All in all this was a brilliant game by both teams. The match between ABL2 and NDSHS 9s saw the under manned ABL2 team get out to an early lead and managed to hold on gamely against the stronger finishing NDSHS 9s. High expectations were held in the game between St Teresa’s Maroon and Sunshine Rebels due to their last encounter resulting in a ‘drop off’ win to St Teresa’s.

Both teams didn’t disappoint their supporters and delivered a high quality match with Sunshine Rebels, playing with no subs, getting the better of St Teresa’s in this one. In a game that went down to the wire, SBSHS 16s just got the better of Good Shepherd. Both teams gave it their all for the entire match. The final match of the day turned out to be the battle for Year 8 supremacy between NDSHS 8s Green and NDSHS 8s Blue. In a reversal of fortune from the semi final match the Blue team definitely peaked at the right end of the season and took the win. Jerry-Lee Flynn and Billy Flynn were named Team Players of the Season in the U14/16 division. Each season clubs like to acknowledge the huge effort that is put in each and every week by the junior referees. While each and every one of them is truly appreciated, this season two of the referees have been nominated to receive an award. The Referee Encouragement Award went to Scott Bailey. This is a remarkable achievement

Front row, Reynae Embleton, Charlie Ayres, Keira Goulding, Kate Hallyburton. for Scott in his first season as a referee. The Referee of the Season award was earned by Giverny Robinson for her continued dedication and effort put forward in this position. A big thank you to Cooroy IGA for its continued support of the grand final sausage sizzles. The summer season sign on will be on the 23 July with games scheduled to commence the following week. The regular season may be over but the Noosa representative teams

have been training over the past couple of months in the lead-up to the Queensland Junior State Cup which will be held over three days from 11 to 13 July. More than 200 teams from all over Queensland will compete in both girls’ and boys’ competitions in age divisions from U10s right through to U18s. Nine Noosa teams consisting of more than 90 players, supported by referees, coaches, managers and families will travel to Hervey Bay.
