A CONTROVERSIAL decision by Southern Downs Regional Council to increase the general rate by five per cent and decrease the discount level has sparked outrage from inside and outside the chamber. Mayor Peter Blundell used his casting vote last Wednesday to break a voting deadlock and pave the way for the hike after four of his fellow councillors refused to support the motion. One of those, deputy mayor Ross Bartley, said other “sensible ideas” were tabled at the meeting that could have avoided the implementation of what was effectively a 7.5 per cent increase. He said constituents who had spoken to him since the news broke were “ropeable”. “We say five per cent but there is a 2.5 per cent reduction on your discount which has traditionally always been 10 per cent,” Cr Bartley said. “I was insistent that it never go above 5 per cent as I gave my commitment to the community last budget. “I believe the ratepaying community in the region have reached their capacity to pay - there is no more to give.” Cr Blundell said the five per cent increase was necessary to achieve a small, $12,000 surplus in light of being one of 16 councils named as “financially unsustainable” by the State Government’s Auditor-General. Under the 2014-’15 budget, resi-

dential ratepayers can expect to fork out $970 per year, up $45 from last year. There will also be an introduction of half-yearly bills (no discount, but no interest charged) and capital works spending is expected to be slashed from $17 million to $12 million. However, no job cuts have been foreshadowed. Cr Bartley said council could have sidestepped the rate increase if it put a stay on its $3.1 million plant replacement program for 12 months. “It is a pretty good fleet and regarded as one of the best in Queensland,” Cr Bartley said. “Leaving the plant alone would have got us there with just a very small increase consistent with CPI.” “I am well aware that state and federal governments have removed levels of funding from us, but when you have a reduction of income you tighten your belt a few notches and be conservative in your spending. You can’t always sit back on tradition.” Grain grower Rod Petersen described the rate rise as a kick in the guts and said it was full-time farmers, like him, that copped the brunt. “I know of farmers who are paying $16,000 to $18,000 (per year in rates) and I know of some farmers who will pay in excess of $30,000 with the new rate increases,” the Killarney farmer said. “It’s considerable because some of those are probably the dairy farmers in small areas who are paying up

Farewell to engineer By ALENA HIGGINS TENTERFIELD Shire councillors and staff will officially bid farewell to Director of Engineering Services Dr Dennis Gascoigne today. Dr Gascoigne leaves council after two years, to resume work in genomic medicine. His new business will see him working with oncologists in the diagnosis of patients with cancer to allow improved treatments and prognoses. At his final council meeting on 25 June, mayor Peter Petty expressed his thanks and those of the councillors and wider community for Dr Gascoigne’s service. “Council thanks Dennis for his service over the past two years and the great work he has achieved in project managing the main street project which has been completed well before time and through grant funding obtained primarily by him,” the mayor said. “We are very proud of his achievements and wish him well in the future.”

Stars ’n’ Stripes shine By TANIA PHILLIPS ALLORA Community Hall took on a distinctly American flavour at the weekend, when the Ultra Golden Country Music Association of Queensland held their bi-monthly concert. Group president Kevin Stow said more than 80 country music fans turned out for this month’s “Stars ’n’ Stripes” concert. He said as the main performer for the day was John Donnelly (formerly from Arizona and now living in Brisbane) and it was so close to 4 July, it made sense to have an American theme. “We try to have a theme if we can,” he said. “The next concert on 31 August will be a Springtime Country Showcase and feature the music of duo Willow Junction - Karen and Stephen Wootton of Redlands.” Mr Stow said the concerts, which are organised affairs rather than just “walk-ups” were always a lot of fun and this month’s was no exception.

Killed in ute crash

Tourism is back, says council By ALENA HIGGINS

By ALENA HIGGINS FRIENDS and family are in mourning after another life was cut short on the notorious Warwick-Allora Road. A man in his forties was killed on Tuesday morning when his four-wheel drive utility veered off the road and rolled down an embankment, before coming to a stop on its side. The accident occurred in the 60km/h zone of the welltraversed back road, about 100 metres north of the Black Bridge at Rosehill. Warwick police Acting Inspector Stewart Day said the sole occupant, who was travelling south towards Warwick, appeared to have died instantly after he failed to negotiate the sharp right-hand bend. “It appears he tried to correct the vehicle and rolled a number of times,” he said. The man’s family declined to disclose his details, but Acting Inspector Day said he was believed to be from the Sun-

shine Coast area. A motorcyclist was killed along the same stretch of road

in October last year. Investigations are continuing into the cause of the accident.

A BITTER blow that left the future of Tenterfield’s Visitor Information Centre hanging in the balance has been reversed. The centre was thrown into turmoil last month when Tenterfield Shire Council refused general manager Lotta Jackson’s recommendations to grant the centre $36,300 in funding and renew its licence agreement for a further 12 months. But a rescission motion debated during last Wednesday’s general council meeting was narrowly passed, effectively righting what many described as a significant wrong. Centre co-ordinator Lara Flanagan, who spoke at the meeting during community consultation, said she felt an “overwhelming sense of relief” when the initial ruling was overturned. “Common sense has prevailed,” she said. “It’s been a shocking three weeks and quite distressing for our volunteers who put their

heart and souls into the place.“ Mayor Peter Petty used his casting vote to break the voting deadlock after councillors Blair Maxwell, Mary Leahy, Gary Verri and Tom Peters declined to support the motion. Councillors Toni Hull and Carol Schiffmann were both absent from the meeting for personal reasons, leaving eight councillors to vote on the motion. Last month Crs Leahy and Peters told the Southern Free Times they were not convinced the centre actually required ratepayers’ funds, pointing to about $100,000 it had sitting in the bank. However, Ms Flanagan said it would cost the council about $133,000 per year to run the tourism centre and supporting the general manager’s recommendations was the most cost effective way forward. Cr Petty appealed to councillors to move on with this issue now that the matter has been resolved.

Man’s murder charge far from her home, about 11am the same morning. In April, police investigating the suspicious death released CCTV footage of Ms Jeffery walking handin-hand with Mr Trebeck down Marshall Street between 2am and 3.30am. At the time of her death, it is understood Mr Trebeck worked as pig hunter on Goondiwindi’s outskirts. The 33-year-old, who originally

hails from the Townsville area, subsequently left the Goondiwindi area, citing community hostility and challenges finding work as reasons behind his decision in an interview with the Toowoomba Chronicle last month. He faced Proserpine Magisterates Court on Monday charged with Ms Jeffery’s murder and was remanded in custody due to reappear on 30 September.

MORE than three months after Goondiwindi mother Alexis Jeffery was found murdered on the banks of the Macintyre River, police have laid charges. The breakthrough occurred on Saturday morning when homicide detectives and Goondiwindi police arrested pig hunter Robert Trebeck, 33, on a property near Bowen in

the state’s north. The 33-year-old had previously been identified as a suspect in the case, but denied any wrongdoing. Ms Jeffrey, 24, was last seen in the early hours of Sunday, 16 March when she began making her way home after spending time at the Queensland and Royal hotels in Goondiwindi’s CBD. Her body was found along the levee bank of the Macintyre River, not

“There was a good crowd in the public gallery and I think they generally thought it went the right way,” Cr Petty said on Monday. “We are going to show our full support to the Tenterfield Visitor Association committee. “Tourism is the second biggest thing in the shire, agriculture is number one, but we need to have a strong and fully supported tourism body, and we have.” Cr Forbes, who along with deputy mayor Brian Murray and Cr Michael Petrie instigated the rescission motion, said he was happy for things to return to normal. “I would like to see the committee get on and run it - that’s the most effective way,” Mr Forbes said. Ms Flanagan said she hoped educating the councillors on the need for their continued support as well as providing them with the centre’s long-term planning would help prevent the fiasco from re-occurring next year.

Cold night out By TANIA PHILLIPS

Phone: 07 4661 9800

MORE than 20 people braved the cold on Friday night to take part in a winter sleepout aimed at raising awareness and money for the homeless. Participants rugged up and snuggled down in their sleeping bags as they bunkered down for the night at Williams Hall on Guy Street, Warwick. Karaoke, face painting, celebrity heads, raffles from donated local businesses and many more organised activities kept everyone occupied and laughing. While numbers were lower than expected, organiser Tracey Bower said she wouldn’t hesitate to host the event again next year and sincerely thanked the dozens of local businesses involved for their generous support. “Although we had shelter, we got a really good sense of how homeless people live,” the kindergarten assistant said.

Thanks to the tireless work of Ms Bower and co-organiser Cathryn Fischer, the team helped raise well over their goal of $500, with close to $700 being donated to Mission Australia as a result of the night. “The money raised helps people address the underlying causes

of their homelessness, support them as they regain their independence and help them get back on their feet,” Ms Bower said. More than 100,000 people are homeless on any given night in Australia, including thousands of families.

MAYOR Peter Blundell has defended his 2014-’15 budget, saying it was crucial to council’s financial sustainability and longterm plans. He said although many of the decisions, such as adopting a five per cent minimum general rate rise while reducing the early payment discount from 10 per cent to 7.5 per cent, were “tough” the budget was a “fair and responsible” one. The mayor has come up

against significant backlash internally and externally since he used his casting vote to pass the budget after deputy mayor Ross Bartley and councillors Vic Pennisi, Jamie Mackenzie and Cameron Gow refused to support the increase at last Wednesday’s council meeting. Cr Glyn Rees, who was absent during the meeting, creating a four-all deadlock, subsequently said he would have backed the motion. Responding to criticism, Cr Blundell it was “no secret” that Southern Downs Regional Coun-

cil was addressing its inclusion, along with 15 other councils, on the State Government AuditorGeneral’s financially unsustainable “watch list”. “We need to deal with that appropriately,” he said. “We can’t afford to run deficit budgets.” He said anyone who thought local government was in better shape financially than the state and federal governments was “deluding themselves” and if the community wanted to keep the services they were determined to have, they had to pay.

Rates are up by 15 per cent pared to other similar-sized councils. On average, residents paid $174 dollars less per year, farmers $1186 less, and businesses $355 during 2011-’12. But this is little solace for some. “The problem herein lies in that the rates go up but the service doesn’t increase ... if anything it gets taken away,” co-owner of Tenterfield Motor Inn Margie Whiticker said. “Yes, they are in financial difficulties, but that’s in part because there were bad decisions made by council ... and that really has nothing to do with the standard business owner.” Simon Hicks, co-owner of Tenterfield Gourmet Pizza, said the massive rise was “not pleasant, but probably necessary”. “As a business you don’t want to see your costs increase, but by the same token you don’t want to see your local council go broke,” he said. Through the successful special rates variation, council aims to increase its revenue by $10 million, which it will use to fund a $9.6 million capital works program and $400,000 of extra operational expenditure. The operational plan 2014-’15, which includes the revenue policy and the long term financial plan 2014-’15, are available to view on council’s website. Ratepayers experiencing difficulties paying their rates can contact council’s rate department to establish a payment arrangement.

Principal Geraldine Holland said the school already used the back of unwanted printed A4 paper for colouring in and some craft but a lot of material has been going into the general waste bins that shouldn’t. “Recycling drink containers, bottles and bits of paper that have been cut off photocopies, drawings and

TENTERFIELD residents will be slugged a 15 per cent rise in general rates from this week after Tenterfield Shire Council adopted its operational plan and budget for the 2014-’15 financial year. The significant hike, a whopping 12.70 per cent above NSW’s rate peg limit, was given the all-clear by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) after Tenterfield Council applied in February for a special rates variation to increase its general income. There will be little reprieve in the coming years either, with a 10 per cent increase to annual charges already approved for the next three financial years before rates drop back down to three per cent from 2018’19. General manager Lotta Jackson said the decade-long special rate variation was integral to the future of the shire, which faced “many financial challenges”. “The increases in fees and charges and the implementation of the approved special rates variation in the coming years are crucial for Tenterfield to remain sustainable,” Ms Jackson said. “Council will also continue to lobby our state and federal members for funding to assist with the infrastructure backlog.” According to Tenterfield Council’s Long Term Financial Plan 2014’24, Tenterfield Council had among the lowest rates in NSW when com-

Man in Black, crowd in rain By TANIA PHILLIPS LATE rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the 200-strong crowd at the Ballandean Estate Winery who came along for the “Man In Black” show at the weekend. The show - a homage to Johnny Cash and June Carter - attracted locals as well as visitors from as far away as the Gold Coast and Brisbane. “One couple came from Biloela,” organiser Ian Wade-Parker from Slydogz entertainment said. “The weather was pretty kind to us.” He said when it did eventually rain they thought they might lose some people, but it seemed to be a cue for them to get up and dance. Mr Parker, one of the organisers of the Stanthorpe Rocks event - now in it’s second year - said they had decided to test the waters and see if there was interest in smaller events. He said they were thrilled with the response and hoped to run a different music event at the winery each season aimed at attracting more visitors to the region and showcasing the food, wine and natural beauty of the area. He said preparations were already well underway and tickets on sale for the second Stanthorpe Rocks event, to be held in November and headlined by Leo Sayer.

Drink-drive MP a ‘bloody idiot’ - Adam Marshall I wasn’t. I drank and drove - I was a bloody idiot. “I would like to sincerely apologise to the community, my friends and family for my actions.” Police will allege the 29-year-old blew more than twice the legal limit when pulled over at about 10.45pm on Friday. It is believed he was travelling only a short distance from the pub to a motel where he was staying. The statement continued with the former Gunnedah mayor saying he would resign from his position as temporary speaker of the Legislative Assembly and deputy chair of the State and Regional Development Committee in the wake of the scandal and cop any legal punishment on the chin.

To the United States, by pony express WARWICK’S Angela Krahe is heading off to America after being chosen as one of only four riders to represent Australia at the prestigious Pony Club USA festival later this month. The talented dressage and showjumper will jet off to Lexington, Kentucky for two weeks on 10 July after completing what can only be described as a gruelling application process. Over a three-week period, the 16-year-old was tasked with answering 318 questions, ranging from short, one word responses to one-page answers. But her hard work paid off af-

ter she received word from Pony Club Australia that she had been selected. “I was out in the paddock hurrying around trying to do stuff before the sun went down and they called and it was more like disbelief,” Angela said. “I didn’t believe it at first then I got a bit more nervous than excited, but now I am more excited than anything.” It will be the first time Angela, who had her first horse riding lesson at age four and joined Pony Club Queensland in 2008, has been overseas. Pony Club USA holds a pony club festival every three years, and the week-long celebration includes

4000 pony club members and their families. Its purpose is to combine a national championships competition with unique educational learning and horsemanship that pony club is renowned for. It is the first time Australians have been invited to attend the international event, which also includes riders from Canada. Angela’s mother thanked the Warwick community for their generosity in helping fund Angela’s trip. “We have been doing a lot of fund-raising and Angela has approached local business and we would like to thank them for sponsoring and donating,” Mrs Krahe said.

Angela Krahe, pictured here with horse Snickers, is off to America to compete in the Pony Club USA festival later this month. “People in this town have been extremely generous towards the enormous cost of sending her.”

Your say on fluoride agreed to by council By ALENA HIGGINS THE general public will get to have its say on whether it wants Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) to continue fluoridating the region’s water supplies after council agreed last week to survey “water connection ratepayers” in Stanthorpe, Warwick, Yangan and Allora in September. But the decision to overlook tenants has sparked backlash from Stanthorpe’s Save Our Shire (SOS) action group, which prompted a review of the health practice after campaigning to have fluoride removed. Chairman Bob Johnson labelled the move to omit the views of renters as “discriminatory” and said the

entire community should have the chance to decide. “This decision pays no regard to the preferences of a large number of residents, the renters, who will be totally ignored,” he said. “Like it or not, they have to drink the water and they pay for it via their rents.” Southern Downs Council adds fluoride to reticulated water supplies in Stanthorpe, Warwick and Yangan as well as to bulk water, supplied via standpipes in Stanthorpe and Warwick. Once Allora is connected to Warwick’s treatment plant, Allora will also receive fluoridated water. SOS member Mary Rofe clarified the group’s position on the mat-

ter, saying they were not opposed to flouridisation per se but argued the current method of delivery was inequitable, wasteful and ineffective. “We have argued that if council provides fluoride it should be available to all residents regardless of water source,” Ms Rofe said. “We support the provision of fluoride supplements of a medical grade to all residents who desire them with directions on dosages as decided by health authorities. “It is only in this way can the benefits of fluoride supplementation be measured and assessed.” The only logistical way to consult people who have a water connection, which is what councillors have chosen to do, was to send

the survey to the rateable address, SDRC director of engineering services Peter See said. “Ultimately they are our customers and the people paying for the water,” Mr See said. “In my view they have a little more clout.” Mr Johnson thanked councillors for addressing the issue at last, but said “as often seems to be the case, they have erred”. “If the community should have input, please give the entire community a chance to decide,” Mr Johnson said. “That is the democratic way.” The survey, which is expected to cost about $8000, requires 50 per cent or more responses to be valid.

NORTHERN Tablelands MP Adam Marshall has branded himself “a bloody idiot” after being caught allegedly mid-range drink driving at Glen Innes on Friday night. The National Party’s rising star will face court in Glen Innes in two weeks’ time and could lose his licence for up to 12 months if convicted after being pulled over by police on his way home from the pub. The news comes as a shock to many, with the 29-year-old - who was first elected to State Parliament in May last year - known more for his diligent campaigning than party antics. In a statement released on Saturday afternoon, the young MP conveyed his deep regret at his actions. “Last night in Glen Innes after an evening with locals and friends I was stopped by the Glen Innes police for a mobile random breath test, which subsequently proved positive in the mid-range prescribed concentration of alcohol,” the statement read.“Although I thought I was OK to drive,

A taste of politics By ALENA HIGGINS FOUR student leaders from Tenterfield High School got a taste of NSW politics last week, during a guided tour of the oldest parliament in Australia. The students, Stacey Hayne, Shania Koch, Brady Thrift and Joshua Benstead were in Sydney for a secondary student leadership program, which included a visit to Government House. Brady Thrift said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience, which provides students with the opportunity to meet their elected representatives and to develop their knowledge of constitutional and parliamentary proceedings including the role of the governor. “It was great, I would definitely do it again,” he said. “It was really good to talk to (Northern Tablelands MP) Adam (Marshall) and to see how it all looks and comes together.”

Tenterfield High School’s Shania Koch, Stacey Hayne, Brady Thrift and Joshua Benstead with Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall on the steps of Parliament House last week. Joshua Benstead, who stepped in to replace school captain Thomas Butler who was away undertaking representative duties, said the trip - his first to the harbor city - was a real eye-opener.

Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall played host to the group, together with their colleagues from schools across NSW at Parliament House last Wednesday. Mr Marshall said the student

‘On hold’ for our council restructure

leaders began the day listening to addresses from MPs, before quizzing them on the life of a politician. “It was a huge pleasure to meet the student leaders, most for the second time, and show them around the oldest parliament in Australia and introduce them to my parliamentary colleagues,” Mr Marshall said. “The leaders were exceptional ambassadors for their schools and I was impressed by their mature outlook on political issues and the pertinent questions they asked.” “As parliament wasn’t sitting today, the students also had the opportunity to spend time in both chambers and sit on the members’ benches and walk through some of the areas of the building off-limits to the public, especially when parliament is in session.” They were also very fortunate to visit NSW Government House and meet Her Excellency the Governor, Professor Marie Bashir, Mr Marshall said.

In receipt of tax guru’s words of wisdom By ALENA HIGGINS IT’S that time of the year again when the calculators come out and the number crunching begins. Tax time can be a daunting time for some, but it need not be Barlows’ chartered accountant Rod Dolling said. He said the best way to maximise your tax refund was to retain your receipts. “Keep things that you aren’t sure you can claim,” he said. “It’s better to have it and toss it

out later than need it once you’ve thrown it away.” Declaring all interest, regardless of the amount, and settling any tax payable by 31 October was also important to avoid unnecessary fines. “Don’t get caught out thinking ‘I haven’t got much interest, so the ATO won’t know about it’, because they do,” Mr Dolling said. “Every interest received gets recorded via the tax file number and reported from the bank to the ATO they know about it and that includes dividends.

“They are getting smarter - they know about sale of shares, sale of property - all of those sorts of things.” Mr Dolling said historically the ATO would turn a blind eye if you lodged your tax return late and they owed you money, but as “the government is short of money, they are cranking down on those things”. This could mean being slugged $110 for each month you are late. Not surprisingly, the ATO has also extended its more “aggressive” approach to include businesses.

“The ATO is doing a lot more benchmarking or industry averages and tax return averages...to catch people out who are taking cash out of the business or not declaring it,” Mr Dolling said. “They don’t mind you being higher than the average, but if you are lower they send out letters to encourage you to smarten your act and come clean and put things right yourself before they look at it themselves” If in doubt, it was prudent to seek professional help, Mr Dolling said.

By ALENA HIGGINS A PROPOSAL to restructure Tenterfield Shire Council’s upper echelons has been put on hold after councillors voted to rescind their original decision to reduce the number of departments from three to two. Councillors passed a recommendation to get rid of the department of corporate services in May in a bid to streamline senior management, but back-flipped late last month after a number of councillors moved to have the decision overturned. Under the proposed changes to the organisational structure, the Department of Corporate Services would have been “made obsolete” and the position of director, currently held by Allan Shorter, “redundant”, according to the 21 May business paper. But in return, a new “executive manager” position would be established, which would oversee strategy, governance and performance and report directly to the general manager. Cr Mary Leahy, who tabled the successful rescission motion that was debated at last Wednesday’s general council meeting, said she believed the best way forward was to retain the status quo. “I felt that the areas of finance, human resources and governance, all of which belong to that directorate, needed to be in a directorate, which is a higher structural form,” she said. “Those are key parts of the operation of any large organisation, including a council. “Given that financial sustainability is one thing that this shire and many others in rural and remote areas are striving to achieve, I thought we needed to give finance that prominence.” Cr Leahy said general manager Lotta Jackson “made it quite clear” that the restructure would not save council any money “as other minor positions would havve been created”.

Letters

our wonderful communities. It was one of the largest citizenship ceremonies council had hosted in some time, Cr Blundell said.

Blocked out

Why the whopping rate increase? The Southern Downs Regional Council budget is out, and the mayor has announced a five per cent rate rise which is way out. Coupled with a reduced discount from 10 per cent to 7.5 per cent those of you (a majority?) who seek the discount each year will pay a whopping increase of nearly eight per cent, eg if you normally take advantage of the discount and your rate rise is on the average, you will pay 7.9 per cent. If you got the discount last year and you forgot or are delayed this year you will pay 16 per cent more. It is an average so there will be pluses and minuses, but even if you are one of the fortunate ones on a rate increase of 4.5 per cent you will still be slugged 7.4 per cent more (but 16 per cent if you do not get the discount). Roll on council demerger. Last year I pointed to serious anomalies in the budget figures and suggested that people should study the budget in great detail and talk to their councillors. This year I implore those with a tad of accounting knowledge to please do that and keep this council fully accountable. Creative accounting can be a problem! R.N. Johnson, Chairman, Save Our Shires Action Group.

Further to our previous letter ... more recently: A local shop/property owner who wished to convert and rebuild their building (which had been badly damaged by fire) at their own cost with their own builders, from business to rental premises was blocked at every turn. The building facade is now all that’s left ... for sale ... leaving the outcome of its future use inevitably for someone else’s battle ... or just ‘there’. A business lost, employment lost and possible redevelopment lost ... but I suppose the rate income is still being paid. Dianne and Murray Larsen, Tenterfield.

Thanks SFT for asking our elected representatives about the forced fluoridation of town water. It is interesting that the mayor is happy for residents to receive a substance which he does not have to drink at home. Crs Bartley, Gow, Pennisi and McKenzie are in favour of a poll even though they have heard on numerous occasions that the residents are against fluoridation already; while Crs Ingram, Rees and Meiklejohn want to override public choice and maintain fluoridation regardless. Cr McNally seems to be the only one responding to public outcries by saying fluoride should be removed because she has listened to feedback from residents. Isn’t it time they all started representing us, like Cr McNally, instead of propping up the system regardless of consequences? Mary Rofe, Stanthorpe.

THIRTEEN community members pledged their loyalty to the land down under last week in a moving citizenship ceremony at Southern Downs Regional Council. After taking their oaths and singing the national athem, mayor Peter Blundell presented each of the individuals with an official certificate, while his fellow councillors welcomed the new citizens as full members of the Australian community by presenting them with native trees. “This is a very important ceremony, certainly in your lives, but in the heart of our community as well, Cr Blundell said. “We are honored that you

Say on water AT THE council meeting, Wed 25 June, it was voted on to allow residents of Stanthorpe and Warwick who are on fluoridated water have a say if they want to discontinue it, such a vote will be done as a survey with their water rates. If I am correct some councillors who do not get fluoridated water, don’t mind imposing it on others when they have had ample time to throw it out. Furthermore those not on treated water have no say in the flushing of ratepayers’ funds down the drain. Charles Gaitskell, Stanthorpe.

Born again I HAVE decided to leave the racial nationalist movement because I have decided that white supremacism is wrong. I have resigned from the Australia First Party because Australia First is a hate group and advocates white supremacism. My Christian faith has led me to believe that racism is wrong and that we only have one earth to live on. As for homophobia, Christ commanded us to love one another and he preached acceptance and forgiveness for all. Even though homosexuality is a sin the Lord commanded us to hate the sin but love the sinner. I apologise to those people who I have vilified and attacked over the years. I now reject homophobia and white supremacism. Peter Watson, Warwick.

NAIDOC Week comes to the Southern Downs from 6-13 July with a large range of activities planned across the week. The Southern Downs Regional Council is supporting NAIDOC Week activities including the special NAIDOC dinner at the Warwick RSL on 19 July. Mayor Peter Blundell and Cr Neil Meiklejohn, who will attend various NAIDOC activities throughout the week, said this year’s NAIDOC theme of honouring all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have fought in defence of Australia was very fitting. Cr Blundell said Australia was commemorating the centenary of Anzac from 2014 to 2018, so the NAIDOC theme of “Serving Country: Centenary & Beyond” is important to everyone. “NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians in various fields,” Cr Blundell said. “The main speaker at the NAIDOC dinner will be Warwick RSL president John Skinner, and he will talk about the contributions of Indigenous and other cultures in conflict across the globe. “We will also hear from a

with Sudhir ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20) Life is pushing from every angle, that you should return to your centre and find something resembling stillness. It is squeezing you in a way, so that you realise that there is really no other place to go. The moment you are mindful, centred and still, a new kind of action unfolds. TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20) The Cancerian Sun is bringing you home to all that makes you feel nourished, good and satisfied. Life is preparing a home-cooked meal. No one is going to have to tell you to dig in deep. Digging in deep is your very nature. The moment you feel nourished, you get your power back. GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) Venus and Mercury are both in Gemini, which will turn your quick wit into a very seductive device indeed. Be sure that you can follow through, once you have sent out your invitations. You are bound to have sent out more than one, which will have you on your toes, if accepted. CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22) The new Moon is rising in Cancer. You are host to both the Sun and Moon. When the Moon is new in Cancer, there really is a new birth. Whichever little shoot that appears at this time, is one worth protecting and nourishing for all it’s worth. Treat all that you create as sacred. LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22) The new Moon in Cancer, leaves you more bewildered than illuminated. It’s clear that some kind of mystery is going on, but who knows what it’s all about. Sometimes one needs to be kept in the dark. To be in the light right now, would set up the risk of you putting your foot in it. VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22) This is not the time to intellectualise. Your visceral sense is giving you all the information you need to know. Listen to it. Life is presently communicating through feeling, not through the spoken word. If you are feeling out of the loop, do something to affirm body and emotion. LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23) There’s nothing more confusing to a Libran, than an incoming wave of pure emotion. The new Moon in Cancer, is sending just this your way. Do your best not to try to pretty up yours, or anybody else’s feelings. Let them be exactly as they are: difficult, messy, dynamic and real. SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21) The Moon sets up a flood of feeling early in the week. This has you wondering whether you may indeed be maturing in some strange way. Saturn promises the gift of wisdom. As you learn to be with what is with an open heart, so he delivers. Where there is usually reaction, hold steady. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21) The new Moon will get you pondering. This is indeed a time of meaningful fresh beginnings. Take time to have a good hard look, at where you are coming from and where you see yourself going. This is a great moment to set your compass. Individuation requires a steady hand. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19) Though it may feel like life is in opposition to your plans, or that it keeps side-swiping you as you get traction, this is an important time. This week’s new Moon represents the birth of a whole new gentleness in your relationship with yourself. Whatever comes of this must be good. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18) Life is beginning to circle you through the domain of relationship again. Whichever way you look at it this time round, it isn’t going to be anything like how you have looked at it before. It appears a very solid lesson has been learned. You are indeed really ready for something new. PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20) There’s a whole lot going on that is working in your favour. The only thing that gets in your way is your own mind. Watch the merry trickster energy of your own madcap thoughts from a slight distance. Pounce on any thought that doesn’t serve you well, like a cat. Stay real and positive.

Winner of the Killarney Cup Solar Choice ridden by Faith Elliott and in second place Quayde Krogh on Euphorbia.

The cup comes home By TANIA PHILLIPS THE Killarney Cup is heading back to the town that bears its name, thanks to local trainer Les Clarke. Clarke trained the winner of the main race on the five-race program at the Warwick Turf Club at the weekend. Warwick Turf Club Secretary Kristen Doyle said it was a “great day of racing” despite intermittent showers throughout the day. “The event was well patronised by the people of Killarney, we had a busload come up,” she said. “We had a Calcutta at the Killarney hotel on the Friday night and that was also really well supported.” She said it was great to see the town get behind the race day. The event is one of a number of “themed race days” the club holds throughout the year including the Allora Cup. The next race meeting will be held on 19 July at Warwick and will celebrate the popular Jazz and Jumpers in July festival.

Better parenting helping hand WHILE every Tenterfield parent knows children don’t come with an instruction manual, many may be unaware of the help, support and guidance available to them for free all year round. Centacare New England North West and the Family Relationship Centre offer a range of programs and courses to support parents, giving them a solid foundation to work from when the journey becomes more challenging. Family relationship facilitator Pedro Sousa says parents sometimes feel like they’ve tried everything and this is as good at it gets. “We have people coming to the course who are exhausted and at their wits’ end with kids who won’t listen to them or have no respect for their parents and others - being a parent is many different things for each person, but we have to step back and remember there’s no right way, or perfect parent.” Mr Sousa, who advocates positive parenting, said there

Pedro Sousa.

were many ways to gain your child’s attention and respect without giving in to whingeing, or feeling bad for losing your temper. “There’ll always be days when we lose our cool and want to throw ourselves to the ground like a toddler, but in the longterm, that really doesn’t help,” Mr Sousa said. “It helps to set boundaries, both for you and your child.” The Family Relationship Centre offers a range of courses

for parents with children of all ages - from toddlers, to teenagers, and in-between, developing foundation parenting skills or as a refresher for parents who feel as though the kids are ruling the roost. There is also a course for parents of children who show extreme behaviour and are particularly challenging. To find out more contact the Family Relationship Centre through Centacare on 1800 372 826.

Blues, Maroons locking horns

1141194-ACM26-14

THE Blues and Maroons head back into camp this week for the final State of Origin match - I refuse to even consider it to be a dead rubber even if the result of the series has been decided. There is much at stake for both teams, and you will find it hard to convince anyone in a Blue or Maroon jersey that there will be a whole lot to play for at Suncorp on 9 July. With Origin players unavailable, we head into the second last of the shortened round. Teams at the top of the ladder will be fighting in earnest to keep their positions, and those languishing at the wrong end will be fighting even harder to improve with only eight competition

rounds left to play after Origin III. There will be plenty of interest in the opening game of round 17 as Manly and the Dogs do battle at ANZ. Manly was in spectacular form with a convincing win against the Roosters. They are sitting comfortably at the top of the table and Sea Eagles fans should be booking their tickets for a grand final seat when they come on sale. This is a tough game for both sides with Origin duties impacting. If Manly wins here, expect to see their premiership odds tumble even further. The Cowboys were in scintillating form when they proved too strong for the Bunnies with a 20-18 win.

Footy Tipping

Star of the show was Jonathan Thurston. Playing his first game at halfback since 2011, JT ignited the Cowboys from the first whistle, laying on two tries and having a hand in a third. The representative playmaker ambushed the Rabbitohs as the Cowboys pinched an early lead. The game could have gone either way at any stage in the second half, but the Cowboys showed great courage to upset the more fancied Bunnies. Round 16 began with an upset. Broncos fans are still reeling after their team squandered a 22-point lead to go down by two points to the Sharks. It is not only an indication of how close the competition is, but also how poorly

the Broncos played in the second half. Players and fans will rue the loss if it costs them a place in the top eight. The Tigers will be minus James Tedesco for the remainder of the season after the star fullback suffered a broken knee cap in the game against the Raiders. The Tigers held on for a narrow win as Tedesco made the all to familiar trip to hospital. The team has a tough assignment against the high flying Panthers on Sunday. Talks have already begun around how Rugby Union will cater for code jumper SBW’s return to the game, should the Roosters make the grand final. Bit annoying for Roosters fans. More important is they have a chance

AN UGLY incident at Texas last Saturday looks certain to rob rugby league of a referee. A referee being assaulted by a player on field fortunately does not happen often - in fact it should never happen. Referees are a unique breed and players, officials, administrators and nondescript journos need to be reminded from time to time that without them there is no rugby league, AFL, soccer, cricket, bowls, tennis you name it. They deserve and need our respect and support. Sure from time-to-time we will not agree with their desicisions. Sure from time-to-time they will make mistakes. They are, after all, human and since the time of Adam and Eve, we have all been known to make the odd blunder. In the case of the BRL and TRL, the blokes who give up their Saturdays and Sundays to take to the centre with a whistle are volunteers in much the same way as the lady who runs the local canteen or the guy who mans the gate and sells the doubles. The only difference is they have put in a bit extra and earned their referees ticket. Without them there can be no games. No referee should be put in the position that Peter Morris found himself in during the Texas Wallangarra game on Saturday. The matter will be dealt with in the appropriate manner at all levels, however Peter Morris can be assured that he has the full support of the BRL. Unfortunately, that might not be enough, and we could see another whistle put back in the drawer for good. The football community condems the actions of a player who has not only brought shame upon himself and his family but also the BRL and all those involved. - Casey

possession of the ball then Ballandean. Ballandean tried to work the ball out of their backline, but a cruel bounce allowed Lachlan Gilbert to score his third. For Ballandean Natalie Cameron tried hard all game. SUNDAY Carlton 1 Ballandean 3 IN A game played in blustery conditions, Ballandean played against the strong wind in the first half against a depleted 10-man Carlton side. Ballandean opend their account when a throw ball from Hunter Murphy saw Jaimee Beecham in behind the defence and a nice left footed finish into the corner net. Carlton hit back from a corner of which Ballandean could not clear and Carlton’s strike bounced over a diving keeper. The second half saw Ballandean pin Carlton down in their half due to the strong wind and peppered Carlton’s goal, but could only score through William McCall’s run down the left wing and Hunter Murphy.

Harvey and Tom Fittock 5/4 over Captain Matt. Next Saturday is the July monthly medal, and putting sponsored by Michael O’Brien. In conjunction is the Dale Mullins Trophy sponsored by Michael Thompson Concreting. Tee off from 11am and the time sheet is on the board. BALLANDEAN SOCCER CLUB Ballandean Junior Colts played two games over the weekend, with the seniors having a bye. SATURDAY Ballandean 0 City 3 WITH contrasting styles in the first half, Ballandean were willing to knock the ball around, while City looked to counter attack through quick ball movement. It was this quick ball movement that unsettled Ballandean with Lachlan Gilbert scoring his first in a goal mouth scramble and his second from a great cross from the right wing. The second half saw a more scrappy affair, but more dominance from City how had far more

Beaten by the best IT WAS a tough day out on the paddock for the Warwick Water Rats at the weekend, beaten at home by top-of-theladder rivals Goondiwindi Emus 62 to 7. “They outplayed us with more experience and bigger blokes,” Warwick and District Rugby Union Club president Neil McCosker said. “They are the best team in the comp by a long way.” Winger Harley Beckhouse provided the highlight of the match, scoring the Rats’ only try. Mr McCosker said he was confident the boys would produce a better result when they take on the Toowoomba Bears at Toowoomba this weekend.
