History road front and centre It may be off the map, but the old Hume Highway is far from forgotten thanks to a new group -- Old Hume Highway 31. FOR THE FULL STORY TURN TO PAGE 6
Wheels of hay and hope Robert Turnbull, right, and the farmers of Lightning Ridge couldn’t be more appreciative of the hay donated by the people of the Border region and the truckies from far and wide. See pages 2 and 3 for the full story.
A total of 33 trucks and $700,000 worth of hay heading for 105 struggling farmers.
Locals’ bank AFTER many years of planning, the region’s own local financial institution opened its doors on 26 June as Hume Bank. From humble beginnings 59 years ago, Hume is now large enough to become Australia’s 22nd bank, Hume Bank. “This is huge recognition of the support Hume receives from the local community,” Hume Bank chairman Michael Gobel said.
“Almost 50 per cent of many of the towns we are in, bank with us and it is this loyal following that has allowed us to become big enough to become Hume Bank.” In recent years, a number of credit unions and building societies have changed their name to include ‘bank’ in recognition of a better understanding of the term bank when compared to building society or credit union.
Hume will be the 11th mutual bank in Australia. “The staff have new uniforms, our collateral, a new logo, our branches new signs - but everything else remains the same,” Hume Bank CEP Andrew Saxby said. “I have been asked ‘why are we changing?’ - and my answer is very simple, Hume is who we are, Bank is what we do. “With a name that better explains
our offering, we will be able to expand our branch network and offer more people a real alternative to the major banks. “We will not be issuing shares and we will not be listing on the stock exchange. We will remain owned by those who bank with us.” “In times of increasing change, organisations must remain relevant and this is one way we are achieving that.”

Dryness in the darkness THE sun had set by the time the 33-truck convoy rolled onto ‘Bando’, but the darkness hid nothing. As we slipped out of our respective vehicles, the hard ground beneath puffed small clouds of dry dust around our ankles. The absence of grass, shrubs or anything green was everywhere. With no rain in two years and subsequently no hint of an income for a further two years - at best - it’s no surprise the farmers of Lightning Ridge are calling for their home to be named a natural disaster area. But as Brendan Farrell’s band of big-hearted
truckies surveyed what they could of the scene, the smell of roast lamb travelled with the wind and the orange glow of a roaring bonfire beckoned. The farmers of Lightning Ridge, led by Robert Turnbull and his family, sure knew how to say ‘thanks.’ The thanking continued throughout that last weekend of June, with breakfasts, lunches, dinners, hot showers and a celebration for both truckies and farmers alike on the Saturday night, complete with karaoke and a mechanical bull. For a second, the drought was forgotten.

Some $700,000 worth of hay had been carted from Burrumbuttock to Lightning Ridge that weekend - 1100 squares and rolls for 105 farmers. It was the third hay run organised by Brendan Farrell, bringing the total hay donated up to $2.5 million, but the first run dedicated solely to Lightning Ridge. “We’re very, very grateful for the hay that’s come up here,” Mr Turnbull said. “It’s a wonderful gesture from people right across the country and the mateship that’s been shown is just remarkable. “Farmers are funny people, I guess. They don’t like to put their hand out. Most of the time they just battle on and they are, in most cases, the quiet achievers. “In this particular case they’ve reached the end of their tether and are very, very grateful for the contribution made by the people across Australia - a huge effort from the truck drivers to the pensioners in the cities donating $10. We are all very, very appreciative of it.” Mr Turnbull said the drought had been relentless in Lightning Ridge, destroying land, stock, property and even costing human lives. “Personally, I’ve been fairly close to people who have gone too far ... ” he said.
“This is something that sticks in my mind and I just feel what we’re doing up here is needed bonding people together and trying to put on functions where at least people have got contact. “We are very isolated up here. We may only see our neighbour once every month. So to have a function and get everyone together, it’s a night off for them. It gives them something to keep going forward for. “The frustrating thing is most parts of NSW have had some sort of a break over this two-year period but we’ve just had no breaks at all. “We’ve had no farming since 2012, the best outlook we can expect now is to get at least 10 inches of rain between now and this time next year to be able to put a crop in the ground next May or June. If that is the case we won’t have any income until the grain’s marketed in January 2016. So we still have another 18 months without any income at all from the actual farming side, and that’s only if we do get rain. “With the grazing side of it we’re all down to our bare core breeders now, finding it extremely hard to source grain and hay and we desperately need freight subsidies to help us out. We’ve just got no money left and we have a lot of starving animals.

Latest hay mercy run The truckies were welcomed to Lightning Ridge on Friday 27 June with a hot bonfire and a hearty feed.
Unloading at Robert Turnbull’s property ‘Bando.’
One of the many ‘thankyous’ to the truckies - a trip down an opal mine. “We’ve been trying to hold onto our ground cover, but with no rain at all and the frosts now starting to come in, the cover we do have left in the way of a few old dry grass butts and burr, it’s crumbling up and going to powder. “We’re coming to the end of the road and the only way we can move forward is by getting rain. “I hope to call for the three shires up here, Bourke, Brewarrina and Walgett shires, to be put under a banner of a national disaster area because it is nothing but a natural disaster. “At the end of the day all we’re doing is trying to feed a nation.” The run to Lightning Ridge has only fuelled

the fire for organiser Brendan Farrell, who confidently named the run ‘the best yet.’ “All the people that come in and get the hay are always so appreciative of what we do and how far we’ve travelled to drop the hay off,” he said. “Even though it’s only 10 squares, it’s that moral support to let them know someone gives a crap. “The little kids running up and down the road waving as we honk the horns just makes you want to go again - it’s very uplifting for me.” And ‘keep going’ is exactly what Mr Farrell intends to do. If Lightning Ridge doesn’t get rain another run will be organised, if they do then an-
other drought-stricken area will receive the hay. “We’re not a foundation or an organisation or government funded, it’s just Brendan Farrell with 50 mates,” he said. “If we want to go to Perth, well we’ll load up and head to Perth. “I have a lot of emails from people around NSW and Queensland that are really struggling. Who knows what can happen with it.” Mr Farrell has asked if people wish to donate money to the cause to donate to the Rotary Club of Sydney. If people wish to donate hay, please call Mr Farrell on 0467 808 229 or Mark Lavery at Mark’s Spray Barn on (02) 6025 8862.
All truckies were presented with a certificate, painting by local artist John Murray and a copy of a song written by Robert Turnbull about the hay run. Pictured: Robert Turnbull and Robert ‘Madness’ Lindsay.

THE eighth annual Murray Now Regional Profile was launched on Monday, revealing the Murray economy generates over $1.4 billion in major projects and $19.9 billion in Gross Regional Product. The profile is considered a unique and comprehensive outline of the Murray Region’s economic growth, demographic figures, economic data per industry, employment and wages including labour force, property and investment information, and tourism and health activity. “I like to have this in my backpack whenever I travel so I can give it to local and international investors,” Barbara Farrer MP Sussan Ley said.
“Every time you meet people travelling who haven’t had any pre-conceived ideas they always come away surprised, interested, engaged and looking for opportunities, if indeed they have money to invest.” Murray Now chair Barbara Hull said this year’s data had additional key elements for attracting investment. “It’s critical we promote our industry strengths and the important role we play on a national and international level,” she said. “The additional information targets regional export trends, freight movement, industry compositions and industrial
land availability further assisting with highlighting our value proposition for the Murray.” The Regional Profile 2014’15 represents communities located across southern NSW and northern Victoria. Many of the region’s most prominent and successful industry leaders such as Mars, Geofabrics, SunRice and Visy feature in the profile demonstrating their confidence and success in the region. With approval of over $348 million in non-residential building over the past year and over $1.4 billion in planned major projects the Regional Profile reflects the success of doing business in the Murray.

NEARLY a year after the last bypass on the Hume Freeway was opened in Holbrook, an organisation called Old Hume Highway 31 has sprung up. The not-for-profit body brings together all bypassed communities along the highway, aiming to get travellers back on the road and back into the bypassed towns. Old Hume Highway 31 founder Frank Burke is extremely passionate about the road, having travelled on it frequently as a child as his father lived in Melbourne and worked in Sydney. Later, he began businesses in Bowral and Albury. “I’m proud to be Australian but I am so sorry to see the culture, the history, everything going by the wayside, he said. “There is no recognition of historic roads in Australia. We look after wonderful old buildings, why shouldn’t we be looking after our roads? “The Hume Highway is the highway around which Australia was developed and we’re losing it bit by bit. I’ve watched the bypasses go in one by one and while the road toll has come down, each time it’s happened the town has suffered to some extent. “This worried me and no-
Frank Burke - founder of Old Hume Highway 31. one was doing anything about it. So I registered the name of the highway and did all the things required in November last year. “The Old Hume Highway 31 body is an overarching body. Each town thinks of its own town tourist-wise. A retailer will say ‘get the customers into the shop,’ but we say ‘get the people onto our highway to get them into the shops’. Mr Burke is working on several different methods to get the old Hume Highway back on the map, including a website and new signage, drawing from a group in the United States with a similar problem - The Route 66 Federation. “Although the Hume Freeway now offers quicker and saf-
er travel between Sydney and Melbourne, the travellers are no longer exposed to the wonderful assortment of Australia’s regional towns and communities and the rich history and cultural values on the Old Hume Highway - we need to make it a tourist destination again, Mr Burke said. “If you got one per cent of the cars that bypass you every day, you’d have over 100 cars a day stopping in Albury. If each of those have two to three people in them, you could have around 300 people enjoying the town and spending money in the town - 2100 a week. This month Old Hume Highway 31 will meet in Yass with representatives from all along the Hume Highway. “VicRoads are driving up from Melbourne for our meeting, Road and Marine Services are coming down for it and NRMA is coming down for it. We are getting the following and people are starting to recognise that this piece of road is dead important, Mr Bourke said. The foundation meeting of ‘Old Hume Highway 31’ will be held at the Yass Memorial Hall on Wednesday 16 July. RSVP to: frank.burke@oldhumehighway31.com.au or 0418 272 491 by Wednesday 9 July.

TOO often students complain that when they complete their chosen qualification they can’t secure a job. Luckily, at Albury Wodonga Community College (AWCC), all courses are designed to facilitate a quick transition into the workplace by giving students skills and knowledge directly required for their profession. In fact, most students who go on placement actually find work within the business they’re placed in - like Hayley Lyons who just completed a Certificate III in Aged Care and Home and Community Care. “I had a very positive placement experience with a resident who is of German nationality,” she said. “He was very reserved and did not interact with most staff often unless he had to. “I had this man as my resident of the day when I was on placement, so I did the usual his obs, cleaning his room and got talking to him about his past. “We ended up having a lovely chat and he told me the reason why he didn’t like to interact with staff. It wasn’t because he didn’t like them or didn’t want to, it’s just that he couldn’t understand some of them. “He felt like he wanted to talk to them but he didn’t want
Hayley Lyons is one of the many AWCC students who gained employment from work placement. to get anyone into trouble or upset anybody by saying anything.” Hayley thanked the man for trusting her to share his concerns with and told him he had every right to say if he couldn’t understand someone, express himself or wanted some more support. Hayley then took the story to her manager and discussed some outcomes. “The staff are now taking more time to ensure he understands what they’re saying and as a result the resident has become much more social - and he even gave me some flowers from his garden. “I’ve really enjoyed my study at the college. The course and the tutors have given me so much more than I thought I would get.
“My confidence in theory and also my ability to practice that in the workplace has been brilliant and allowed me to get a job.” Hayley now works for the aged care service she did her placement in. “This is a terrific example of the experience and connection aged care workers have every day,” AWCC general manager Anna Speedie said. Anna says AWCC ensures students are very well prepared for the workplace in a bid to secure their employment as soon as possible. “We match students to facilities and ensure they have the appropriate skills they’ve learnt in the classroom, but we also prepare them to go out in the workplace,” she said. “As a result, a really high percentage of all of our students who go out on placement gain some form of employment, whether it be casual or contracted work. “That’s a fantastic outcome. People do community service courses to gain employment and when you see the outcomes and the results of that so quickly it’s rewarding, but it’s also what the courses are all about. “Ensuring you actually have a course that is relevant and meets the needs of industry is what we’re trying to achieve in what we do.”

Animals find a cash cow AWARD-WINNING local youth group For The Animals (FTA) is holding its second annual charity art auction this month, with hopes of raising $10,000. “We were quite blown away at how much money we were able to raise last year, For The Animals leader Nicola Jones said. “We had all of our sponsors and artists say they’re willing to do it again. “It’s the same thing as last year - a silent auction, but we’re having it at GIGS, so it’s a bigger venue than last year, plus we have catering and a raffle, but we have nearly twice as much art this year. “We have over 50 beautiful pieces of donated art, mostly from local youth. We also have some wonderful catering and entertainment - so many commented on the warm and inviting atmosphere last
year, Ms Jones said. “In the last few weeks we’ve had a lot more artists come on board, so I think $10,000 is achievable. Last year the group raised nearly $7000 on the night with all proceeds going to Wodonga Dog Rescue, Maremma Rescue Victoria, Albury Cat Rescue and Kangaloola Wildlife Shelter. Wodonga Dog Rescue was able to put the money towards vet bills and Kangaloola bought formula for orphaned joeys. “I think it’s important not just to raise money but to raise awareness of what these organisations do, Ms Jones said. “So many people still aren’t aware, particularly of Wodonga Dog Rescue, so any attention we can bring to them is awesome. They all rely completely on donations.
FTA formed in February 2012 and were recognised last year for their hard work, receiving the City of Wodonga Red Carpet Youth Award and the Rotary Club Group Community Service Award. “I think people are more inclined to listen to us, which is the opposite to how it usually works, Ms Jones said. “People take a lot more notice when it’s youth. When it’s a typical 40-yearold person volunteering it can sometimes be like a broken record. We come in with fresh ideas and different opinions. “We have kids that are only six or seven volunteer with us, but our regular volunteers are about 13-15 years old, right up to 27. The silent auction is on 9 August at GIGS Artist Studio, starting at 6.30pm.
Last year’s charity auction MCs Josh Tierney and Leah Dinsdale with a drawing by a 16-year-old that raised $250.
Friends of The Albury Regional Art Gallery have donated $9000 towards its refurbishment.
Changes for gallery THE Albury Art Gallery is set to get a new look, both on the ground and at a committee level. A unique partnership between AlburyCity and the Friends of the Albury Art Gallery will see almost $9000 donated to the art gallery redevelopment. The Friends donated more than 500 volunteer hours during the Archibald exhibition. They welcomed guests and provided information to people attending the exhibition during its six-week showcase in Albury. The exhibition generated $15,771 in income. Some $8909 will be donated to the Friends Group in recognition of their work during the Archibald Prize. The Friends will then donate their share to the art gallery redevelopment. Meanwhile art heavyweights from the National Gallery of Australia and Art Gallery of New South Wales will join local representatives from the arts and business communities on a new advisory committee. Committee members will play a strategic leadership role in helping the art gallery. The committee features Mary-Lou Nugent from the National Gallery of Australia and local art and business champions John Skillington, Jacinta Mirams, Maree Cables, Dr Guinevere Threlkeld, Tony Smith and Les Tomich.
Break-in probed POLICE are appealing for information regarding several incidents in Lavington early on Saturday morning, including a home break-in. The break-in occurred at approximately 4.35am on 5 July, when a mother and father awoke to the screams of their 11-year-old daughter. They ran to her aid and ascertained a stranger was in the house. A check of the house found a rear door open. “This type of scenario sends a chill down most people’s spine and police are hoping that someone will have some knowledge of the person or persons involved in breaking into this Lavington home, Albury inspector Anthony Moodie said.

THE Grammy Award winning Soweto Gospel Choir wowed audiences at the Albury Entertainment Centre on Sunday. Since its formation in 2002, the choir has brought joy into the lives of audiences all over the world and on many occasions performed for and celebrated with two of their biggest fans - Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the father of their nation, Nelson Mandela. Following the recent passing of Nelson Mandela, the choir has been honoured to participate in
services around the world celebrating and commemorating his life. In recognition of the passing of such a towering figure as Nelson Mandela, Soweto Gospel Choir dedicated their Australian concerts to his memory and included a section dedicated to freedom songs and some of Madiba’s favourite hymns. The Soweto Gospel Choir are well-loved across the world and the Border is no exception, praising the group with a roar of applause at the finale.

In cod we trust FRESHWATER anglers have 60 days to provide Victorian fisheries managers with feedback about proposed changes to Murray cod size limits that are designed to significantly improve stocks. Fisheries Victoria executive director Ross McGowan said more than two decades of fisheries science and some of Victoria’s best Murray cod anglers had recently reviewed catch limits. Mr McGowan said comprehensive modelling had informed the review and suggested Murray cod populations, and stocks available to anglers for harvest, would be much better off under a new ‘slot limit’ of 50cm to 70cm and a reduced daily bag limit of one fish in rivers. “Narrow slot limits are increasingly used around the world to improve the sustainability of long-lived fish and the quality of fishing for anglers,” Mr McGowan said. “The current 60cm to 100cm slot limit has improved Murray cod populations over recent years, but scientifically-based fine tuning could do even more. “A slot limit of 50cm to 70cm would prohibit the harvest of Murray cod larger than 70cm while allowing the limited take of smaller fish between 50cm and 70cm. “The research suggests that over 15 years, this would significantly improve the sustainability of the fishery, the number of harvestable Murray cod and the number of trophy fish longer than one metre. “Murray cod take around 10 years to grow from 60cm to

Under current regulations they remain vulnerable to harvest for this period. “However, Murray cod grow faster when young, taking around three years to grow from 50cm to 70cm, so are vulnerable to recreational harvest for less time. “Larger Murray cod are older and more experienced breeders, produce more eggs and contribute more to future generations, so it makes sense to protect their reproductive capacity long-term. “The proposed 50cm minimum length would permit anglers to harvest Murray cod at a size better suited to the table (around 2.3kg) and without the unpalatable fat that larger cod are known for.
“The reduced daily bag limit for rivers is designed to further protect large breeding fish and encourage natural breeding. “The bag limit in lakes would remain unchanged at two, given many lake fisheries are stocked annually with Murray cod fingerlings and are thus much less reliant on natural breeding.” A public meeting on the proposal is scheduled for Wednesday 6 August at the Bendigo Legion Angling Club at 7pm. Anglers are encouraged to provide feedback on the proposals. Submissions close on Friday 29 August, 2014. Learn more at www.depi.vic.gov.au/murraycodslots

Foster carers sought in Albury THE decision to foster was an easy one for Mike and Clare Perkins*. After discovering they couldn’t have children naturally the couple made the decision to become foster carers and have never looked back. “We can’t even remember life before the kids,” Mr Perkins said. “Before we used to stay at home on weekends and watch TV but now we are out playing sport, travelling, camping and living life with the boys!” Mr and Mrs Perkins are now a full time foster carers to eight year old Tim and four year old Byron and had been married for six years when a friend encouraged them to try fostering. Challenge Children’s Services had
just opened in their area. The Perkins had heard good things about the organisation so decided to contact manager Lisa Andersen. “Lisa was so friendly and we felt at ease with her from the get go,” Mrs Perkins said. A few months later the Perkins were authorised carers and preparing to welcome Tim and Byron into their home. They had heard plenty of horror stories about fostering and were apprehensive about meeting Tim and Byron for the first time. “Challenge set up a meeting for us so we could meet the boys and get to know them a little before they ar-
rived,” Mr Perkins said. “This was so beneficial as we weren’t strangers when the boys came into our home.” The Perkins were told Tim was blind and Byron couldn’t walk or speak but with a little stability and extra support Tim is now in the top reading group in his class and Byron is walking on his own and his speech is improving. “Getting him to stop talking is the challenge now!” Mrs Perkins said. The Perkins also quickly identified that consequences for the children’s misbehaviour was not effective with the boys, instead a reward system helped them to achieve better results.
“We had to toilet train Byron when he first arrived, so we introduced a star chart,” Mrs Perkins said.
“After two days of introducing the star chart, Byron was completely toilet trained. This was such a huge achievement for us all.” The Perkins encourage anyone considering foster care to go for it. “It’s not a job or something you would ever do for the money,” Mrs Perkins said. “You become a foster carer to help, to make a difference in a child’s life. “These kids just need to know they are loved and that someone cares. They are after all, just children.” To find out more about fostering contact Albury Manager Maryanne Donnellan on 0428 582 025 or visit www.challchildren.org.au.

THE kitchen and bathroom are two places in the family home where good lighting is imperative. For safety reasons (and to produce a nightly meal to the family’s high standards) lighting in the kitchen must be bright and even, and in the bathroom every girl knows ‘good lighting’ can mean the difference between looking naturally beautiful or a little clown-esque. So when you’re renovating or building, make Middy’s your first stop for quality, stylish lighting - a trusted family company who are 100 per cent Australian owned and independent. Middy’s is also Australia’s largest electrical wholesaler, having been in business since 1928. Regional Sales Manager Chris Day says Middy’s Wodonga has never looked better, having just moved to a new bigger building in order to facilitate more displays for customers. “We moved to a new branch last month to increase our lighting displays specifically,”
Middy’s Wodonga branch manager Mathew Harrington and his team at their new location. Mr Day said. “We have new ranges of LED lighting as well as new, modern, stylish switches and power points. We have downlights for the kitchen, plus decorative lighting for your benchtop and other features. “With our suppliers, we’re at the forefront of all the latest LED lights. LEDs have been around for a while now but there’s a huge difference between quality LED and the cheap and nasty stuff that comes in by the container load. “What we’re finding is a lot of companies sell these cheap LEDs and then disappear, leaving customers
without replacements through warranties. “But we’ve been around for a very long time and we only use reliable, quality suppliers who back the quality of their products with warranties.” Servicing both sides of the Border, Middy’s can assist you with all your lighting requirements. “It’s important you always use a licensed electrician to install any electrical products for the safety of your family,” Mr Day said. Visit Middy’s at corner Osburn and Queen streets, Wodonga, ph: (02) 6056 1699 or 421 Wagga Rd, Albury, ph: (02) 6025 1133.

The big boys make me cry By KRYSTEN MANUEL
is a breath of fresh air both musically and personally, a fact Tommy immediately recognises with disdain. From here, the group gradually rises to fame with their first hit Sherry and all is looking bright - but not for long. Thanks to Tommy, the group is left with a mountain of debt, leading to the split of the Four Seasons. While the music was fantastic - even for someone who didn’t grow up listening to them - and the acting was good, I found two major, very frustrating problems with the film ... It’s all well and good to be passionate about The Four Seasons and make a movie out of their story, but the director shouldn’t assume the audience already knows the story or they will leave the cinema as I did - with a scowl and too many questions. My second issue with Jersey Boys, and after a quick survey it turns out I’m not alone, is with the timeline. Jumping to and fro, backwards and forwards from year to year without proper explanation left me as confused as a baby in a topless bar. Not clever Clint. So, in summation, if you love The Four Seasons and you actually know their story, go ahead and see it. You won’t learn anything but you’ll enjoy the music and the bright colours.
MOVIE: Jersey Boys STARRING: John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Michael Lomenda, Vincent Piazza, Christopher Walken DIRECTOR: Clint Eastwood DURATION: 134 minutes CLINT Eastwood’s latest directing role in Jersey Boys was quite poor, but with comparison to some of his previous films like Gran Torino it’s actually quite distressing. Jersey Boys is the story of Franki Valli and The Four Seasons. It’s told in a rare style, jumping from narration by a character as the scene continues behind them, back to regular film style - a technique I think should be strictly confined to the theatre. The first to begin narration is Tommy DeVito (Piazza). He claims to have discovered Frankie Valli (Young) and so the story begins as Frankie joins the constantly changing group (in name and members as they tag team in and out of jail). The boys struggle with the law, dabbling with the mob, illegal gambling and selling items that continually fall off the back of a truck. But with the addition of Nick Massi (Lomenda) the group begins to find its feet. Nick

Heart of darkness By KRYSTEN MANUEL FOR those who are a little nocturnally inclined or find a certain blissful freedom in the surreal, visit GIGS Art Gallery’s latest exhibition - Dark Energy. The exhibition is composed by four photographers including Rachel Pringle, Eric Saros, Paul Temple and Helen Bishop who all explore ‘the darkness’ through their own unique processes. “In Dark Energy the borders between the unreal, the real, the surreal are ill-defined, hidden by the primordial shadows from which life emerged in the very distant past,” photographer Paul Temple said. “Darkness creates its own energy. On entering a dark room our minds play and everything becomes ‘real’. Our senses are heightened, our hearts beat faster, everything is alive. “The camera is a dark box and magic occurs within. When this small box is flooded with light we have nothing. But, when we allow a small amount of light to fall within, through a minuscule hole or a lens, a moment in time is stolen. “But ... is this stolen moment reality? Or unreality? The truth? Or fiction?” Paul said one of the main themes explored in the exhibition was the idea that ‘the camera never lies.’ “What we’re doing is a little bit different,” he said. “Some subjects are human, some are not. “It goes back to that whole idea of truth in photography. In the old days they accepted that photography was truth because they took what was there. “Now, because you can manipulate the subject matter before or afterwards, is it real or not real?” The four artists represented in the exhibition worked independently to produce a mix

of thought-provoking and mysterious images to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the birth of photography. While all artists are photographers, their creative processes are all very different some of the artists shoot digitally and use layers to add more to the photograph, one photographer uses film and double exposures and Paul tries to produce images using only the camera, finding inspiration in the stillness of mannequins.
“Ages ago I bought some shop mannequins from a garage sale,” he said. “A lot of artists have used mannequins as a sort of surreal part of their work. Having said that they’re not all mannequins, I’ve used some models as well. “Another thing that inspired me was going to Madame Tussaud’s a while ago. They had a little pretend workshop set up with body parts sitting on the shelf and that interested me as a surreal thing - to have this head or hand just sitting there.” Don’t miss the camera obscura - the ‘dark box’ of the early years - pushing the boundaries of reality in Dark Energy. GIGS Art Gallery, Gateway Island, Wodonga, 16 July - 10 August. Opening: Saturday 19 July 11am-1pm. Gallery open: Tuesday-Sunday, 10am-4pm.
McClellan is back MIKE McClellan returns with a brand-new album of songs, his second in three years. Dancing In The Rain was produced by the muchawarded Matt Fell and will only enhance Mike’s reputation as one of the finest songwriters this country has ever produced. Among the 11 songs on the album are several that he has been playing in concert for the past year. I Wonder Who You’re Waiting For has been getting enormous reaction and will surely join the catalogue of classic McClellan songs. It is 40 years since Song and Danceman was a national hit and voted Song of The Year by the music industry at its annual awards so it is perhaps not surprising that Mike should reinterpret his signature song for this album. He played it on his acoustic guitar for Matt Fell (who was born in the year it was released and had never heard Mike’s hit version) and asked him not to listen to the original: “I want your take on how this song should be recorded.” The result speaks for itself. It’s a wonderfully reflective reinterpretation of a song that, ironically, may be even more relevant than when Mike first recorded it. His songs have earned
him an honoured place within the history of Australian music and you’ll still hear Song and Danceman, The One I Love and Rock’n Roll Lady on radio, along with several others from his extensive back catalogue but until the release of If Only For a Moment... in 2011 it had been 20 years since Mike McClellan had released a CD of new songs. A “best of” collection (Time. And Time Again) was released back in 2001 to the joy of many whose vinyl collections were wearing rapidly. That Dancing In The Rain sustains the exceptional quality of his much-loved early work while richly reflecting his growth as a writer is ample testimony to his enduring talent. And of course he’s one hell of a guitar player. He has returned to the road and will continue. “For as long as I can still deliver,” he said. “I love performing, always have, and many have said I’m singing better than ever. I guess I’m lucky. The voice is still good. And there will be more albums. Many years ago I called an album Until The Song Is Done. It still isn’t.” Who: Mike McClellan Where: Entertainment Centre When: Saturday 12 July

CENTRAL WODONGA – Central Living
This award winning townhouse, centrally located will impress those wishing to downsize. Featuring:
IT’S a house the size of a unit on its own title, offering complete freedom. This, in addition to its central location makes 25 Lindsay Street the perfect investment. Located in the heart of Wodonga, this home is well within walking distance to schools, the hospital, shops and sporting facilities, but located on a quiet street with the added privacy and security of a brick fence. From the street, the home is neat and very well maintained. The garden is established but very low-maintenance, wrapping around the back of the house to feature an orange tree. The backyard is spacious and uncluttered with a shed and undercover, paved entertainment area. Awnings on the front of the house assist with cooling in the summer, though the living room has a split-system installed, as well as a wood heater (plus woodbox) for these chilly nights. The kitchen, while in need of renovating, is very functional and well-maintained featuring a double sink, electric cooking and rangehood. The laundry has storage and backyard access, with extra linen storage located near the bedrooms and bathroom. The bathroom is quite a surprise, with extralong vanity and counter space, oversize shower to easily fit two people and separate toilet. Both bedrooms are identical - both generous, queen-size and carpeted with built-in robes. This is the perfect property for investors and first home buyers alike - don’t miss your chance for an inspection.

’Tis the season to keep buying IT’S the season for red wine and open fires, for skiing and snowboarding, for chunky soups and the heating on high. In the past, that meant fewer property sellers and buyers, as homeowners tucked themselves in for the winter. Now, though, agents report the selling season has extended beyond the always-busy autumn into the cooler months - and not just for chalets and apartments in the mountains. Sellers are capitalising on their homes’ winter appeal, both features and location, and agents are marketing properties to attract winter buyers. This ranges from the high peaks of the state’s far north-east, to small-acreage farm getaways, and even to coastal areas of Victoria. With good snowfalls already reported in the past fortnight, an agent in Mount Beauty, at the base of the Falls Creek Alpine Village, is already advertising a home as “warm and inviting”. A Mansfield agency’s information about a Falls Creek apartment makes mention of its heated floors. Another for sale at Mount
Hotham has a gas log fire, or you can warm up on a balcony with a hot tub. There is even a heated garage car space for the successful buyer. Coastal regions - perhaps surprisingly - are also benefiting from the increased winter action. While some seaside real estate agencies used to report slower sales in winter, with staff taking the chance for a holiday, they now report the number of winter buyers increasing. Many visitors prefer the lure of the coast on a stormy winter’s day. For those who look carefully, there is always the chance of an off-season bargain as the number of visitors to the coast falls over the winter period. One coastal location in Melbourne’s west that continues to be popular in the winter months is seaside Warrnambool, which in the past 10 years has averaged a 12 per cent increase between March and June, a sizable growth when many Victorians are focusing more heavily on the fireplace than the property market. Another indication of interest in coastal areas can be found much closer to Melbourne’s
outer fringe. The clifftop town of Mount Eliza, on the Mornington Peninsula, has averaged a 5.1 per cent price increase in past decade, in the following quarter between June and September just the time when thousands of Melburnians are heading north to the ski fields. This quarterly price increase compares to just 0.7 per cent between December and March. Given this level of interest, and with the Victorian housing market continuing to show solid growth, the market is unlikely to lose steam this year as temperatures drop. But for those willing to search for an affordable property, some of Victoria’s most popular regions can offer affordable buying. For example, last winter in the Alpine region - featuring picturesque towns like Bright and Beechworth - it was possible to buy a home for around $200,000. This, alone, would warm the hearts of many buyers looking for an impressive weekend retreat. Enzo Raimondo CEO REIV

Local stamina wins out ALBURY locals have dominated a star-studded field in round two of the Victorian State Endurance Mountain Bike Series held last weekend in tough conditions. The competition, the Pushy’s Albury three and six-hour, was held at Nail Can Hill Albury on one of the coldest days of the year so far according to Albury Wodonga Mountain Bike Club vice-president Shane Vanderwerf. He said the coffee vendor did a roaring trade all day in the cold conditions.
Shane said despite temperatures as low as 6-7 degrees and rain showers more than 140 competitors from across Victoria, including Australian representative Tory Thomas (who won the women’s three-hour event), took part. However the day belonged to Albury’s Chris Meyland who stayed strong to win the men’s six-hour endurance in the muddy and cold conditions. Shane said Meyland, who had won the Rambo Interclub series last year, was in top form despite the conditions.
“He did it in good fashion and was solid all day,” he said. Another local, Craig Medcalf also showed good form to finish second in the Solo Male three-hour race, while the Pushy’s team won the junior event. Racing action turns to Wagga Wagga this weekend for the next round of the local interclub competition on Sunday, while the third round of the 10race Victorian Endurance series will be held on 26 July at Blores Hill, Heyfield.

Local Sport Albury’s pride before a big fall By KRYSTEN MANUEL A SHOCKING loss for Albury United against St Pats in round 15 has left the boys shaking their heads. Albury United spokesperson Marty Chambers said the 4-3 loss could be attributed to over-confidence coming into the game, as well as a focus on this week’s game against top team Twin City. “We’re sitting fourth on the table and St Pats were down near the bottom so we were really confident leading into the game,” Chambers said. “Maybe that was our downfall. “This week is very important. Twin City are top of the table and we really want to put in a good show against them and knock them over. “Maybe some of the boys had their mind set on this week instead of worrying about the game at hand.” But credit was given where it was due and St Pats coach Andy Stevens was praised for his motivational skills, which Chambers believes contributed strongly to getting the boys over the line. “St Pats had a bit of a team meeting during the week, apparently,” Chambers said. “Andy Stevens is their coach and a great motivator, he can definitely get the best out of the guys at certain times in the season. “All credit to him, he’s pulled his troops together during the week. “They had a game plan, they stuck with it for most of the match and, at the end of the day, they got the three points and we didn’t get any.” Chambers said St Pats gained most ground on the counter attack, though the Albury United midfielders managed to hold the ball for longer periods. “We controlled the first half of the game for long periods of time but we
just couldn’t capitalise, couldn’t put it in the back of the net, unfortunately,” he said. “St Pats had a couple of opportunities and they scored one with about 30 seconds left of the first half which was a bit frustrating, especially when you dominate for long periods of time. “They scored two quick ones in the second half and definitely came out stronger for long periods. “We got it back to three - all towards the end of the match where we were pushing for the last goal to win but they got us back on the counter attack again. “They scored in the last 30 seconds of the second half as well. “We have a pretty good core in the middle of the park. We have some awesome players in Josh Mulchay, Sam Graetz and Caleb Martin - our central midfielders are very strong and we can hold the ball for periods.” Albury United is looking ahead to this week’s game against Twin City, with much to be done in the meantime. “We definitely need to work on the counter attack,” Chambers said. “The pace teams are coming at us, we need to try and control the game rather than let teams come at us, which means we need to work higher up the park than back in our back line. “We really need to capitalise in front of goals as well when we have the opportunity. “Defensively, we need to make sure we pick up those loose ends coming forward from the opposition instead of letting them play the game they did on the weekend. “We need to start backing ourselves instead of holding back.” St. Pats FC 4 (A. Stevens 3 - 47th, 49th and 93rd minute, C. Mitchell 1 - 44th minute) d Albury United 3 (S. Graetz 1 - 76 minute, C. Webb 1 - 80th minute, A. Rees 1 - 3rd minute).

Big V Round 15 Wrap Up THE Green’s Garden and Ag North East Lady Bushrangers have secured their second win on the trot with a dominant 76 to 53 victory over the Keysborough Cougars. The Lady Bushrangers set up the win with a scintillating first half that saw them restrict the Cougars to just 25 points while piling on 51 points of their own. On the offensive end the Lady Bushrangers used some crisp ball movement to get everyone involved while some dogged defensive pressure saw them force the Cougars into turning the ball over 24 times. Stacey Browne was outstanding for the Lady Bushrangers, leading from the front on both ends to finish with 23 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists. Rachel Jeffery provided some solid support on her way to 19 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Coach Jason Bannerman was able to get his younger bench players into the game for some valuable experience with Beth McKay taking full advantage of the opportunity. The Subway North East Bushrangers pushed the Keysborough Cougars all the way in the round 15 contest before eventually going down 83 to 70. Coming off last week’s win and some much improved play, the Bushrangers had targeted this game as a chance to upset one of the league’s front runners. The first half was a tight affair as each team traded blows. The Cougars were able to capitalise on some sloppy play from the Bushrangers as they coughed the ball up 15 times for the half but only trailled by a solitary point at the half. The Bushrangers burst out of the blocks in the second half to jump the Cougars and put a real scare through their camp to go into the last quarter holding a slim three-point lead. It would prove to be a disappointing finish for the Bushrangers as they went away from everything they had done well in the first three quarters to eventually go down by 13 points. The Bushrangers would be left to rue their 25 turnovers that Keysborough would score 27 points off because this would prove to be the deciding factor between the two teams. Dylan Webb had a standout game to finish with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists. Jon Lindhe kept up his good form with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Both sides return home this weekend as the Lady Bushrangers face the Chelsea Gulls and the Bushrangers take on the Oakleigh Warriors on Sunday at the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre.

O&M FOOTY2014 Time to pause for thought The Bulldogs’ Jack Gilbee is hoping for a breakthrough this Saturday.

Wodonga’s Matt Seiter is due to face the Raiders this weekend.
with SIMON CORR I HOPE everybody took the opportunity to turn off from Ovens and Murray Football last weekend and capitalised on the opportunity to spend some time with the family, walk the dog or knock over a few of those jobs around the house that have the uncanny ability to mount up at this time of year. I personally don’t have a pooch so although I did enjoy some respite from the game I spent most of the time thinking about it anyway. A lot of my thoughts surrounded just who is likely to be a contender, who is managing their playing group the best and timing their run to perfection, and who is going to to emerge from the pack because I reckon this weekend is the time to shine. The ramifications from this weekend’s round are huge, every contest will reveal something about the teams and a win or a loss could dramatically change the course in which many of our sides are heading. After this weekend just six games remain until finals and the side that finished on top gets a decisive advantage. It would appear that this honour has come down to just two - Albury which still remains the only undefeated team and the Lavington Panthers who have dropped just one game for the year to the aforementioned side. The Panthers cannot afford to drop an unexpected game before their round 14 encounter with the Tigers and so Saturday’s contest with the Wangaratta Rovers looms as a big one. The Panthers have certainly had their share of injury concerns this season yet, to their credit, (and an telling indication to the depth at the club), they have rarely put a foot wrong. Their powerful forward line combination of Prior, Kosi and Flagg have seldom ventured onto the field as a total combination however each of these forwards have well and truly enjoyed their own individual time in the sun. Having to defend all three this weekend will not be a headache that the Rovers will have to encounter but managing just one will be. The Rovers have shown that at times they belong in the five but when it has counted most to step up as a contender they have failed every time. It’s perhaps their final chance to prove to all that they are not just there making up the numbers. Albury’s destiny is largely in its own hands. Should the Tigers continue to win then they

will guarantee themselves the minor premiership. Saturday’s opponent will be North Albury and while the Hoppers have won many admirers this year, it’s unrealistic to see how they can pinch a victory here. Albury was clinical in last round’s 85-point defeat of Wang Rovers and I’m expecting a similar margin here. The contest this week that may have the biggest bearing on the make-up of the top three is between Yarrawonga and Corowa. The Roos weren’t even in the hunt when the two river rivals met earlier in the year, however they are playing a lot better footy at present.

looms large for Wodonga on Saturday. Cruelly pipped after the siren in the last round the Doggies will go into their home town derby against the Raiders hungrier than ever before and I think they may finally taste the spoils of success.
Yarrawonga is clearly not at the peak of its game, despite returning to some overdue form against Wangaratta a fortnight ago. If Corowa could pinch an upset here it may sneak into the top three and with a whole town behind it could be the competition’s smokey. Wangaratta will have its last roll of the dice to stay in the hunt for a finals position when it hosts a much improved Myrtleford Alpine Saints. The Saints have enjoyed a great last month or so and will be looking to upset a few more applecarts before the seasons end, perhaps starting with this weekend. The possibility of a breakthrough victory
