Border scores goal By KRYSTEN MANUEL FOR a small group of Bhutanese boys who kicked around make-shift soccer balls year after year in a refugee camp, the tide has turned. Now settled across the Border, the boys not only got a chance to kick a real ball, but to hold the Australian Bhutanese Interstate Soccer Championship (ABISC) trophy proudly above their heads. Plus, thanks to their big win, the Border has been chosen to host the next ABISC, bringing thousands of dollars to the community. “Because we have been given the opportunity to settle in Albury Wodonga, we feel very fortunate, we have a new life,” Albury Bhutanese Association president Teju Chouhan said. “We feel we have to give back to the community for the favour we’ve received. We’re proud because next year we’re going to host the championship, so we will draw a big crowd and help the community financially. “At the same time, we have challenges. Our association was set up a little over three years ago and now we are hosting the national level championships. “We call on the Border community for any possible support that will assist us build our capacity to provide the best opportunities to these youth. This will also provide a foundation for hosting next year’s event successfully.” The ABISC has been running for three years and is part of the Bhutanese Youth Festival 2014, where nine soccer teams from different States of Australia participated. This is the first year a team from Albury Wodonga has played. What began as a friendly game of soccer has now become a source of pride and hope among the entire Bhutanese community. “We formed the team because the community was growing and everyone felt it was something they already

Of course, we don’t have a qualified coach and we are under resourced, but it’s the spirit and the motivation that got the group going for this long. “The championship also started three years ago in Brisbane - that was also a trigger to form the team.” Having been in training for three years, Three Star Albury Wodonga were faced with the three time defending champions - Adelaide Dragon Red. “They were hoping to have their third win, but we crushed them,” Mr Chouhan said. “Our boys are proud,” he said.

knew - they wanted to start a team,” Mr Chouhan said. “Most of these kids have been born and bred in the refugee camps. They have had a humble beginning. “As they grew up they never had a proper soccer ball. They often recall their past experiences of making a soccer ball out of plastic and wrapping it up with tape. “Life is pretty basic there. You don’t really dream big and you don’t feel you have a future. You live for the day and be happy if you live through it. “This all started off as social soccer. WODONGA’S young-gun chef Zackary Furst has secured himself a place in the Nestle Golden Chef’s Hat Award national final for the second year in a row. The 21-year-old nailed the Victorian heat on 8 July against a record number of young chefs participating from across the state, thriving on the pressure of competition and the competitive nature of chefing. “Any chef has a competitive spirit at heart, I think, purely because of their ego, he said. “The competitive spirit in me would have come from growing up with my Dad and brother as chefs as well. The three-course, four-hour culinary challenge saw Furst creating a sumptuous threecourse meal that impressed the judging panel, made up of internationally recognised World Association of Chef’s Societies (WACS) judges, Nestle chefs and members of the Australian Culinary Federation. His silver medal-winning menu included an outstanding dessert of Bay Leaf Panna Cotta, with chocolate and fennel seed ganache, sweet baked tuile and dates in rosemary caramel. “This one was a little bit easier than last year now I know what I’m up against, he said. “I had my chef from my work with me so it was a lot easier to have a guy I’m quite close with to work with. “Our strengths are definitely our work-flow in the kitchen, general team work and organisation. Furst works as a sous chef at The Commoner in Flemington with fellow chef Jake Kellie, (aged 23, from Travancore). Both will represent Victoria in the National Final. “The nationals are in Melbourne at the Crown Casino in September which will be great, he said. “I want to always keep myself excited about cooking and learn new things all the time. “I’m so happy to have won and be representing Victoria in

Going for growth THE Victorian Coalition Government is investing $445,000 on the upgrade of the Wyeeboo multi-purpose community facility in the Tallangatta Valley. “The Coalition government’s investment is made up of $350,000 from the $1 billion Regional Growth Fund and a further $95,000 through the Country Football Netball Program, Benambra MP Bill Tilley said. “Towong Shire Council will contribute $200,000 and the local community has contributed $100,000, which is a fantastic effort.

“The new space will have a kitchen, dining area, improved access, a first aid room, change rooms and storage space for community groups. The project is to be managed by the Wyeeboo Recreation Reserve Committee of Management. Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan said the Coalition government’s contribution was made possible through the Regional Growth Fund. “The Regional Growth Fund is investing in community-led projects to

strategically drive jobs, investment and innovation in rural and regional Victoria, Mr Ryan said. “Since it was established in 2011, the Regional Growth Fund has delivered more than $400 million, generating well over $1.6 billion of total investment across almost 1500 projects. In Towong shire, the Regional Growth Fund has provided almost $4.5 million to 32 projects, leveraging more than $7.9 million in total investment.

WHEN the Albury Chess Club was approached to play a tournament with inmates from Junee Correctional Centre, it’s no surprise they were a little uncertain. What was surprising was the reception they received when attending the tournament, which left them walking away with a magnificent painting to be hung in their usual playing arena at Albury High School. “We were a little bit apprehensive about it but we were put at ease by Wagga Chess Club,” Albury Chess Club president Greg Darcy said. “Once we got in, the surprises didn’t stop! “The first surprise was the location in the gym because there were floor to wall paintings, they also supplied two dedicated barbecue operators and fed us, and they supplied two dedicated baristas. “We introduced ourselves to the eight players before we started playing and they made us feel really welcome with speeches before we started. “It was less competition and more friendly - they really appreciated that we actually came to them.” The competition was organised by the centre recreation officer Mick Perkins, Wagga Wagga Chess Club and Albury Chess Club, and was around five months in the works before the competition held on 22 June. “12 months ago Wagga Chess Club formed and they contacted us about wanting to meet three or four times a year in Culcairn,” Mr Darcy said. “Because they meet in Wag-

The painting inmates at the Junee Correctional Centre presented as a ‘thankyou’ to Albury Chess Club. ga they were contacted by Junee Jail to play their prisoners and from there the invitation was extended to us to make a day of it. “It was the first time and everybody agreed they’d like it to happen more often. At this stage we’re thinking about doing it in January again.” Five chess players from Albury travelled to the Junee Correctional Centre for the tournament, meeting at the centre’s Cultural Centre with a band providing live music in the corner, barista coffee on demand, and an active art room on the first floor. The setting for chess included a near life-size chess set on the floor and eight tables with inlaid chessboards. Following the ‘meet and greet’ session the Wagga Wagga and Albury teams were presented with two oil paintings depictions of Mates Gully Cafe in Wagga Wagga and Albury High School, being the regular meeting places for the respective clubs. “The painting looks pretty impressive,” Mr Darcy said. “We showed it to the principal at Albury High School and he was also impressed. We just got it back from being framed

and I’m looking to hand it over to him this week sometime.” A few friendly games were followed by a barbecue lunch, with a round robin of matches commencing afterwards. The matches were played by the four teams. Team members were graded 1-4 and each played a game with black and white against their opposite number. Chess clocks were used with time controls set at 10 minutes per player. Wagga Wagga won the teams event, one won game ahead of Albury, with the Junee A Team a close third. A perpetual trophy was present to Wagga Wagga Team and each member of the Wagga Wagga Team received a miniature chess trophy. The day finished with a few more friendly games and some analysis of games played. Albury Chess Club was represented by president Greg Darcy, Rob Simmons, Martin Stevens, Colin Finlay and Danny Stamenkovic. “We enjoyed the day immensely and look forward to the next tournament for the Junee Correctional Centre Perpetual Chess Trophy,” Mr Darcy said. “Our thanks again to all at Junee.”

HOTHOUSE Theatre will receive a $50,000 grant to fund a playwright to work with local theatre-makers on a brand new play. The play, Somewhere Else will focus on the frustrations of being a young person in the digital age. The NSW Government grant is part of $315,000 being spent state-wide to support the development of regional theatre projects. NSW member for Albury Greg Aplin said the NSW Government was proud to support projects that benefited local communities. “The NSW Government’s Regional Theatre Project of-

fers funding of up to $60,000, for one year, or up to $75,000 for projects delivered over two years,” Mr Aplin said. “This funding will support the development of new theatre works, presented and produced by people living in regional communities and performed by regional actors. “These grants support projects initiated by and involving the local community, encouraging people to engage with local theatre.” He said the playwright would work with local emerging talent to develop the work. “This work will develop skills of local artists, build new, younger audiences and lead to

a major fund-raising campaign to take the show to Sydney,” Mr Aplin said. Minister for the Arts, Troy Grant, said the Government was proud of the arts and cultural sector in regional NSW. “The NSW Government is responding to the needs of theatre makers in regional communities by providing support that will help to develop new theatre works. “These projects will develop the skills of regional playwrights, actors, production staff and other creative practitioners, and help grow audiences for regional theatre,” Mr Grant said.

ASSOCIATE Professor Pieter Mourik’s Rights to Privacy Albury (NewsWeekly, 2 July) is just a high-falutin’ name to disguise the dastardly deed that is done when doctors abort babies. It is also a contradiction in terms. To exercise a “right to privacy”, the “right to life” needs to be guaranteed. You have to first be alive to exercise any other rights! Since Dr Mourik denies there is such a fundamental right as a “right to life”, surely his claims regarding a “right to privacy” are purely academic? As Dr Mourik embarks on his statewide campaign to have the NSW Parliament legislate exclusion zones “around the entrance of any women’s health clinic in NSW “, the tide is turning against

him. On June 26, in a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court of the United States of America struck down a Massachusetts law that created a 35-foot buffer zone restricting pro life free speech outside abortion clinics. The decision is a huge victory for sidewalk counsellors as it frees them up to be able to offer compassionate and caring alternatives. As happens, it is likely to influence other legislatures. Perhaps it’s time for Dr. Mourik to cease the angst and where doctors have failed, leave it up to The Helpers to offer some last-minute help to women as they take that irrevocable step towards abortion. Denise M. Cameron, Pro Life Victoria (Inc) president, North Fitzroy.

Group therapy pilot A PILOT group therapy program will begin in Wodonga this month, aimed at helping people at risk of developing significant mental health challenges to lead more fulfilling lives. The initiative by Hume Medicare Local (HML) and North East Border Mental Health Service (NEBMHS), is based on Wise Choices, a group therapy program developed by J. Morton and L. Shaw from Spectrum - the Personality Disorder Service for Victoria. Kim Haebich from NEBMHS said the program has been used with great success in the past with people who experience unwanted troublesome feelings, memories, urges, sensations and thoughts, that can often trigger actions such as self-harm or suicide. “The group aims to develop confidence and empower people to use safer

ways of dealing with stress and difficult life experiences before they progress to a point where suicide or self-harm is likely,” she said. “The group is facilitated by qualified psychologists and offers a combination of information sharing, discussion and useful activities for the participants to put their new skills in practice. “The topics covered include learning about and reflecting on thinking patterns, emotions and values, understanding thoughts and feelings in a way that enables wiser choices, and learning about relationships.” The program is an extension of the Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) program co-ordinated by HML, which treats people with common mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.

Director of Clinical Services David Kidd said the strong existing relationship between NEBMHS and HML should give the group program good chance at success. “The two organisations have been sharing knowledge and resources for a long time, and have produced some excellent outcomes for local people affected by mental health challenges,” he said. “The group program is delivered by skilled and experienced professionals which will no doubt deliver similarly great outcomes for people in our region in need of a helping hand.” Wise Choices is a free, 10-week program beginning in Wodonga, which started on Tuesday 15 July. If interested, potential participants should ask their GP about being referred to the program.

Burke Museum and Historic Precinct manager Patrick Watt, said the recognition was unexpected and is testament to the great service provided by the staff and volunteers in the historic precinct. “It was a surprise to receive the honour from TripAdvisor,” he said. “The staff and volunteers have done such a fantastic job

over the years, it is great to see that visitors appreciate their friendly service,” he said. Visitors to the Historic Courthouse said they enjoyed being able to stand in the dock where outlaw Ned Kelly once stood, and the authenticity of the building. Cottages of love By KRYSTEN MANUEL IF YOU’RE in need of some romancing – a chance to unwind with your loved one and enjoy the good things in life – book the Romance Package at Upper Murray Cottages. Enjoy a break away without the hassles of hours of driving – the resort is only a short 60-minute drive up the river from Albury! The package includes two nights, wine, chocolates, a gourmet platter, wood fire and spa, breakfast provisions and late check-out, all in a self-contained spa cottage with a cosy wood fire to snuggle up in front of. What more could a couple want? The resort and cottages are nestled on 180 acres of natural bushland. Facilities include outdoor spa, two swimming pools, barbecue facilities, tennis court, badminton court, a billiards table, canoe hire, bush-walking trails and an adjacent golf course. Emily and Sam recently took advantage of the cold weather and booked a cottage ... “My weekend away to the Upper Murray Cottages did not disappoint,” Emily said. “As we arrived just on dark, we were warmly welcomed by Robyn and Brian who had wine and chocolates waiting for us. “In our cosy, private, two bedroom, fully self-contained cottage was a lovely warm fireplace that was crackling away just beautifully, and a generously large spa that was perfect for soaking away the tension. “As we awoke in the morning and

stepped out onto our balcony, we overlooked the breathtaking views of the Murray River flowing down through the valley – spectacular. “If you like to keep busy on your holidays, there are plenty of activities to do taking a walk down one of the many beautiful walking tracks and watching the native wildlife, play a game of tennis, have a hit of golf. And for the warmer months take a swim in your choice of the two swimming pools, or enjoy a self-guided canoe trip down the beautiful Murray River. “Upper Murray Cottages is the place to be! I would recommend it to anyone and I can guarantee you will not want to leave!” Upper Murray Cottages owner Robyn Caldwell said visitors were also welcome to order from a range of delicious meals, which would be brought right to their accommodation “We have a choice of meals available to the accommodation. The meals are all prepared for the guests to enjoy at their leisure. “We also do lovely barbecue packages – angus scotch fillet, crusty bread and dessert, and if the guests order two packages they get a bottle of wine from Gapsted as well.” Upper Murray Cottages welcome small dogs (no dangerous breeds) and also offer some great family deals for the upcoming school holidays. For more information, or to make a booking visit www.uppermurrayresort. com.au, or call the friendly reservations team.

Barossa Valley - South Australia

Holidays can mean health DID you know one in four Victorians haven’t been on an overseas holiday in three or more years? Millions of Australians, including thousands in Victoria, could be risking their health by failing to take up their full annual leave entitlement from work, according to a revealing new survey published on 10 July. Travelzoo Australia’s poll asked close to 1000 people if they always used all their annual leave and the results from Victoria showed more than half (58 per cent) didn’t. Nationally, the figure was 55 per cent meaning as many as 6.3 million Australians might not be taking all their leave. GP and Embarrassing Bodies Down Under presenter Dr Sam Hay said the noticeable health benefits of a holiday should not be overlooked. “Taking a holiday can have a favourable and lasting effect on your blood pressure, sleeping habits and stress levels, he said. “If you can find the time to head off on a long break and leave your busy work schedule behind, your body and mind will thank you for it. “There’s no doubt that after a holiday you’ll come back to work more motivated, more productive, and definitely happier. Tasmanians were the least likely to always take their full leave allowance, while those living in Western Australia were most likely to use it. In the battle of the sexes, men were guiltier of failing to take their leave. Travelzoo Australia managing director Brad Gurrie said 98 per cent of survey respondents in Victoria said they believed taking a holiday was good for their health. “Nearly everyone from Victoria we asked said going on holiday was good for their health and yet huge numbers of us are choosing to ignore our

Don’t be a martyr! Not taking holidays could severely affect your health.

All aboard with Martins’ By KRYSTEN MANUEL MARTINS’ Albury have been taking you from A to B since 1931. What some people may not know is Martins ‘A to B’ isn’t just public transport and school buses – there’s a wealth of holiday tours on offer that stretch from South Australia right through to Thailand so you can enjoy the best your country has to offer. The Circle Tasmania tour is departing 14 October and stretches over 14 days. “Tassie is a great destination, there’s a wealth of natural beauty, Martins’ Albury owner Rosalie Martin said. “It’s sailing over on the Spirit of Tasmania and then we have 14 days on the island going to the west coast. “Travellers will do the Arthur River Cruise, Strahan and Gordon River Cruise, coming back to Cradle Mountain and into Hobart. We’re in Hobart for four nights and then we come back up to Swansea and Launceston. “And of course there’s much, much more. We usually do one tour a year to Tasmania and October is a very nice time to go because everything is green in spring. The Kangaroo Island tour departs on 10 November and spans eight days. “We’ve added onto the itinerary the Co-

orong Peninsula Discovery Cruise, Rosalie said. “We spend two nights on Kangaroo Island, we come back to Mannum – the houseboat capital of Australia, and then home via Mildura. Finally, a bus tour line-up wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t feature the Great Ocean Road, which spans six days and departs 9 March, 2015. “We’re stopping at Torquay and going to Surfworld, then continuing on to Warrnambool for three nights, Rosalie said. “While we’re there we’re doing the Warrnambool River Cruise, Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, the sound and light spectacular - Shipwrecked, then we come home via Creswick and stay at a Novotel resort, then we come home via Shepparton where we do the Hurlstone Homestead. “The Great Ocean Road is one of the most scenic coastal drives in the world. Currently, there is a strong demand for theatre shows in Melbourne including The King and I, Les Miserables, Italian Winter Masterpieces and Mother and Son. annual leave because we can’t afford a holiday or find the time, Mr Gurrie said. “Taking a long weekend here or there is great but it can take a couple of days just to unwind. Victorians shouldn’t forget about the obvious advantages of a long two-week holiday, or that restful feeling that washes over you when you jet off overseas. “Travelzoo provides a lot of short breaks around Australia. We also offer some deals on longer overseas holidays that offer the perfect opportunity for some proper R&R. Travelzoo Australia’s survey also showed almost one in four respondents (24 per cent) in Victoria said it had been three years or more since they last went on a holiday overseas, while one in 20 (five per cent) said they had never gone over-

seas – the equivalent of almost a million Australians nationally. Some 25 per cent from Victoria said they had no plans for an overseas holiday within the next year, with affordability (56 per cent), poor health (21 per cent) and a busy schedule (24 per cent) cited as the main barriers to taking a break. Self-employed Adam Leishman from Caboolture said he hadn’t had a full week off work in 18 years – and didn’t even own a passport. “I got married nine years ago but still haven’t been on honeymoon, the 39-year-old said. “I’ve never fully grasped the importance of a holiday and I’ve always been too busy at work. I’m getting to that point, though, where I just want to jump on a plane to Bali and forget the world exists for a couple of weeks.

WITH more than 20 years “chefing” and working in the food service industry, Lemonhead owner Allanna Kennedy has seen a lot of wasted food. So when she got the chance to open a place of her own she vowed that she would be conscious of being kind to the earth and being kind to her customers - keeping both the earth’s health and the health of those who come to eat there in the forefront of her mind. The result is Lemonhead, which opened its doors in Lavington four months ago. The cafe currently has seating for 20, but is looking to expand - with plenty of room to grow and plans to have a large shared table. And while the emphasis is on healthy meals with Allanna and the also very experienced Kristy Gladstone (formerly head chef of the Border Wine Room and All Saints Restaurant at Rutherglen) creating the food, it is also something a little special. She said reaction to the Lemonhead had been very enthusiastic and positive. “It’s been fun and the food is amazing,” she enthused.

Don’t move, just improve Electrical and looring

One-stop shop For all home automation, lighting and audio solutions - visit Middy’s, Albury and Wodonga.

Come home to Middy’s By KRYSTEN MANUEL

Polished floorboards are a fantastic way to give a room a new lease on life. strength, stability and finishing qualities and known to be both beautiful and durable, with its stability deriving from being kiln dried. “Everyone knows oak and ash. It’s the colour, the high quality it comes up as when it’s finished - it’s sought after. “You can clear finish it so you have the natural colours come through. Or rather than buying a more expensive timber, you can add a tint through the finishing products and get a similar look out of the Tasmanian oak.” Tasmanian oak, varying from light to reddish brown, it

is recognised for its high staining and finishing qualities, which allows it to be closely matched with existing timbers and finishes around the home or office. “And lining boards are a cheap way of doing up a nice feature wall,” Daniel said. “It depends on the grades but you can buy really nice sheets of plywood now which you can oil and use as a feature wall. “I sell timber for people to make furniture or benchtops as well.” Visit Uptons at 521 Wagga Road, Lavington, or call on (02) 6025 4466.

THERE’S no place like home of course - but coming home to a cold, dark house in winter just isn’t ideal. Rest assured, Middy’s can help, offering full home automation so you can come home to a warm, bright, secure home after a long day out. Middy’s also offer a wide range of lighting and audio solutions to get your home updated with all the latest technologies. Middy’s is a trusted family company which is 100 per cent Australian owned and independent. They are also Australia’s largest independent electrical wholesaler, having been in business since 1928. Regional Sales Manager Chris Day says the sky is the limit when it comes to Middy’s and home automation.

“We can offer a complete fitout of the home,” he said. “That’s everything from lighting control, to sensors, timers, home theatre, blinds and climate control. It then can be programmed to any sort of smart technology, whether it be a tablet or smartphone. “One of the more popular uses is a welcoming theme. So you can touch one button and your door will open automatically, the entrance lights in the hallway will turn on, your blinds will open and your heating will switch on to your preferred temperature. “Or if you’re at a restaurant, an hour before you leave you can log in and turn on your heaters, close your blinds and have it all nice and snug for when you get home. “You can also set themes for when you’re away. So at night

you can time some of the inside lights on so it looks like it’s occupied, reducing the risk of a burglary.” Speaking of lights, Middy’s Wodonga has never looked brighter, having just moved to a new bigger building in order to facilitate more displays for customers. “We moved to a new branch last month to increase our lighting displays specifically,” Mr Day said. “We have new ranges of LED lighting as well as new, modern, stylish switches and power points. “With our suppliers, we’re at the forefront of all the latest LED lights. LEDs have been around for a while now but there’s a huge difference between quality LED and the cheap and nasty stuff that comes in by the container load.”

UPTONS is your one-stop shop for building and renovating. A one-owner operation that has expanded from Tasmania to all over Australia, Uptons has just celebrated its Albury location’s first birthday. Albury manager Daniel Webb has been in the business for 10 years and now uses his experience to lead the Albury team, providing inside knowledge to clients across the Border looking to build or renovate. “We pride ourselves on customer service,” he said. “If customers need anything we’re more than happy to help them, especially when it comes to expert advice and knowledge. “We can do anything - I can organise builders, transport, insulation, everything. “We started off as a salvage business and have grown from there. Now we sell everything for builders - plywood, timber, floorboards, hardware, windows and doors, anything building related.” In terms of renovating a room, Daniel suggests flooring and feature walls as your first consideration. “Tasmanian oak flooring is a high quality tongue and groove system, made out of sustainable hardwood,” he said. “It’s prized for its beauty,

The perfect conductor THE Border’s own Murray Conservatorium Choir, augmented with more than 20 choristers from other local choirs, will perform under the baton of one of Australia’s foremost choral conductors next month. Brett Weymark has held the post of music director of the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs since 2003 and was awarded a Centenary Medal for his services to music. He will lead the massed voices of a 70-strong choir in a day and a half of intensive workshops, culminating in a concert performance - Sound of Light. Since his appointment as music director, Mr Weymark has conducted Sydney Philharmonia Choirs in performances throughout Australia and internationally, and prepared the choirs for concerts with conductors such as Sir Charles Mackerras, Charles Dutoit, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Zubin Mehta, Edo de Waart and Sir Simon Rattle. Mr Weymark has performed with all the major ensembles from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra to The Black Arm Band, including conducting the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Antipodes, Sydney Youth Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and productions for WAAPA, Pacific Opera and OzOpera. He has performed professionally with Opera Australia, the Australian Chamber Orches-

tra, the Song Company and Musica Viva. Mr Weymark has recorded with ensembles and artists such as Cantillation, Sara Macliver and Teddy Tahu Rhodes, as well as conducting a wide range of film scores from Happy Feet to Australia. The Sunday afternoon concert will feature two major works: John Rutter’s Five Childhood Lyrics and Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna, as well as shorter works by Whitacre, Faure and Barber, and finishing with Handel’s famous coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest. The weekend’s activities have been made possible with support from the Ruth Whyte Bequest. Ruth was an Albury resident who died in the 1990s, leaving a substantial bequest fund for the benefit of music in the Albury Wodonga region. The weekend’s activities represent a unique opportunity for the music community of the region to work with such a high calibre musician with an international standing. Sound of Light will perform at Mirambeena Centre, Martha Mews, Lavington on Sunday 3 August from 2.30pm. Tickets can be purchased from Regent Cinemas, the Murray Conservatorium, Genevieve Boutique, Spiritus Galler or Choristers and are $20 for adults or $15 concession with under 18 free.

Brett Weymark is one of the foremost choral conductors in Australia and will be sharing his talent in Albury on 3 August.

THIS one has the critics jumping on furniture, beating their chests and bellowing with glee. For me, a sound applause should suffice. Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is a rare breed - a sequel that stands on its own but follows on nicely from its predecessor, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. It is set 10 years after the virus that wiped out nearly all humans was released and caused an apocalypse. The apes live happily in the forest, believing all humans are dead and gone until two younger apes come across a group of humans. Inevitably, the humans want something - access to the dam in order to get power and in turn contact any other surviving humans. Unfortunately for them, the dam is located within ape territory. Caesar, leader of the apes, strikes up a deal with Malcom (Clarke) and for a split-second the relationship has potential for harmony. But ’there’s one in every crowd’ - one in the ape crowd and one in the human crowd who push and exceed boundaries, disobey orders and do everything they can to destroy the newly-forged relationship.

Both Caesar and Malcom find themselves struggling to trust one another, especially when pitted against their own. To avoid war they must push forward with their relationship, but how much of this is really within their power when unrest and fear spreads through the masses? If you’ve heard the special effects of Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is outstanding, believe it. Everything from movement to nuances specific to each individual ape is flawless. The way they’re designed to appear is so life-like you could easily imagine what it would feel like to touch Caesar’s leathery hand

or feel his nimble baby climb across your shoulder - amazing. Character development was another stand-out aspect for me. With themes surrounding xenophobia, family, war and gun control, well developed characters are a must and you know you’ve hit the nail on the head when certain members of the audience tear up over an injured monkey... My only criticism was some scenes felt as if they dragged on a little. All in all, a must-see at the cinema. –Krysten Manuel

IT’S A fun time to be alive if you enjoy a quality audio performance thanks to the rapid rise of music streaming and easier access of all genres - a new world has opened up. This year is an exciting year for all audio markets from budget to high-end with streaming of quality audio systems breaking the $300 barrier and a number of mid and high-end speaker companies addressing the performance versus size battle with the KEF LS50 speakers, Sonus Faber Venere 1.5 the Reference Grade Swan M3 from Hale Laboratories defying size and price. How this has come about is the combined resources of mainly US, European and English companies with some of the powerhouse Chinese manufacturers. We have, in recent times, seen some of Australia’s best speaker engineers begin to combine those very same skills. During the height of the music boom of the 1980s and 1990s Australia was a leading light in speaker technology. Having travelled the journey with a number of these people and looked at what they could achieve on such a limited budget defied gravity. We now have a number of these Australian aging engineers that have been quietly working on speakers that are fully designed here and made over there and priced to compete in a crowded marketplace. We are witnessing a revolution in affordable hi-fi speakers. It is worth taking five minutes of your time to see how far they have progressed without breaking the bank account. The companies all well known to the audiophile market but not so well known to the bulk of the market have all looked at the conundrum of performance, size and ease of use of both male and female across all ages, providing new technologies while remaining faithful to the mature customer. Significant brands include Naim, Cambridge Audio, Linn, ARCAM and Cyrus have sound systems that sound more like motor car prices, however the trickle down effect into affordable products that started a few years ago has become a flood of great product aimed to sell in large quantities not just to be admired in expensive magazines or hi-fi shows.

Homes&Property Albury Wodonga

A journey into space SPACE is abundant inside and outside this recently renovated property. With its central location, extra large rooms and generous outdoor entertainment area, 126 Gralen will suit families and housemates alike, making it the perfect investment property. From the street, the home looks modern and inviting, with two huge windows at the front - an indicator of the spaciousness inside. It has been rendered in a warm cream colour, beautifully contrasted with the black guttering and roof. Running parallel to the home is a neatly stencilled dark grey driveway, leading up to wrought iron gates, behind which is a shed - perfect for boat or caravan, with adjoining workshop. Through the front door and past the wide entry will lead you to the lounge room - and what a room it is! First things first ... built in and fully plumbed, the bar is a real show-stopper with its exposed timber and wrought iron. With more than enough room to store as many different types of drink as you please, the bar fits nicely into the vast lounge room, complete with 9ft

ceilings (throughout the home) and wood heater. Bedrooms one and two are both a generous king size with nicely detailed cornices, while bedroom three trades down its king size to queen for a three-door walk-in robe. Bedroom four is a simple queen size, but spacious nonetheless. The bathroom has just been renovated. It’s now very functional with bath and shower combined, neat vanity and stunning exposed timber and wrought iron mirror. The kitchen and dining area is another open, substantial area with electric cooking, pot drawers, gorgeous natural light and the same wrought iron/timber shelving throughout the home. This area also enjoys gas heating. The laundry and toilet are found at the very back of the house. Outside, the entertaining area is undercover and, again, large, opening out to the backyard with established garden with cubby house for the kids. Don’t miss this fantastic investment opportunity.

Albury Wodonga

WODONGA

Immaculate in its presentation THIS three-bedroom home has been lovingly maintained, both inside and out. The formal lounge includes gas heating and ducted cooling, while the separate dining area looks onto a lovely fernery and undercover barbecue area. The kitchen has plenty of bench space and storage.

All bedrooms have built-in robes and the bathroom has a large shower recess. The double carport leads into the spacious and very tidy yard with a double-size garden shed. The well-established garden looks lovely. This delightful home is situated among other quality properties and would ideally suit a mature couple. No pets.

Looking for a new family pet or best friend to love? Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue is here to help, with a variety of puppies and dogs waiting to be re-homed with a loving new owner. Most dogs are unclaimed from the Albury Pound or are surrendered by members of the public. Each dog has passed a temperament test before being placed into foster care. The adoption fee for dogs and puppies is $340 plus $40 for council registration if adopted in NSW. The fee includes a veterinary health check, microchipping, desexing, C5 vaccination, flea treatment and intestinal worming. For cats and kittens the fee is $200 which includes veterinary health check, microchipping, desexing, F4 vaccination, flea treatment and intestinal worming. Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue endeavours to carefully match dogs with their new owners to ensure dogs are placed in the best environment for their future wellbeing.

Local Sport First class uni games By KRYSTEN MANUEL ORGANISERS have praised the Wodonga community and their volunteers for helping to create the biggest and best Southern University Games yet. Attracting nearly 2000 university and TAFE students from Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and - new this year - New Zealand, the games featured 14 sports across 16 venues. “I would say it’s the best regional games I’ve been to for a number of reasons,” media and marketing co-ordinator Fiona Cullen said. “The support from Wodonga City Council was incredible. They embraced the event so wholeheartedly. “The volunteers were so diverse in skill and background and they made it amazing. The officials and competition managers that ran the sport on our behalf were exceptional and the facilities were awesome too. “The final thing for me that was a big indication of how good the event was, was the venue we used for our social program. They really understood the university market and looked after the students. We had people showing up bare feet, but instead of turning them away the venue gave them

James Kattan and Nathan Ormond in a close bid for the ball.

thongs. The same with bare chested guys - they had all these promotional shirts they had to get rid of, so they said ‘here you go!’ “I think it helps that it’s a university town, having Charles Sturt in Albury and La Trobe in Wodonga, so the community has an understanding of what university students do, what their needs are and how they entertain themselves. Previously, we’ve had events in non university towns and it can be a bit challenging.” The games featured three big awards for universities. The John Campbell Trophy for Overall Champion, which went to La Trobe University

for scoring eight pennants. “That award is given to the university that wins the highest number of pennants,” Ms Cullen said. “Each sport essentially represents one pennant. There were 22 pennants in total across multiple categories.” The Hugh McKechnie Trophy for Per Capita Champion also went to La Trobe University. This award is based on the points acquired through the competition divided by the number of students the university has. The Spirit of the South award went to RMIT. “This is awarded to the university

that is voted by their peers as being the best and fairest,” Ms Cullen said. “Every time they were happy, supportive and in good spirits. They would clean up after themselves, they were very well mannered and dealt with the competition staff really well.” The Southern University Games began in 1992. Ms Cullen said back then it was in a slightly different format and known as a Southern Conference. “They didn’t involve quite as many universities and no TAFE,” she said. “The event has really grown significantly. This year we had 1950 students competing which is the highest number we’ve ever had.”

Dogs in successful raid for the ladies By KRYSTEN MANUEL WHILE the Wodonga Bulldogs are struggling to hold their heads above water in O and M Football, the ladies have picked up the slack. A comfortable third on the O and M Netball ladder, the Doggies took no prisoners in their last match against a rival Wodonga team - the Raiders - in a match that resulted in a 28-point win. The win was clear from the outset, with the first quarter concluding with the Dogs on 16 and Raiders, 8. The second quarter was much the same story, with the Dogs just doubling the Raiders score with 31, leaving the Raiders on 15. The third quarter followed trend with the Dogs doubling the Raiders, 50 - 25. The last quarter concluded with an additional 14 points for the Dogs and 11 for the Raiders, resulting in a final score of 64 - 36. Despite their loss, the Raiders put up a consistent fight, even displaying one last gust of energy in the final quarter. Hayley O’Neill and Rachel Johnson did what they could, scoring best players for the match. For the Bulldogs, Rebecca Cameron dominated the goal circle as Goal Attack, while Rebekah Ohlin busted the Raiders in Goal Defence. Next week, the Bulldogs will face the Wangaratta Magpies, while the Raiders will aim to make up for their loss in their upcoming match against the Wangaratta Rovers.

Three wins on the trot Big V Round 16 Wrap Up: THE Green’s Garden and Ag NE Lady Bushrangers have made it three wins on the trot after accounting for the Chelsea Gulls, 68-65. It was a gutsy performance from the Lady Bushrangers, as they continued their much-improved play and weathered a number of challenges from the playoff bound Gulls. With both teams struggling to put points on the board, the score line was always tight, and it would come down to whichever side could capitalise from the foul line. Rachel Jeffery had a stand out game to finish with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Holly Bawden had another big game on her way to eight points and 10 rebounds. Lady Bushrangers coach Jason Bannerman was full of praise for his side. “They’ve improved out of sight,” he said. “We have lifted our shooting percentages and our bench players are contributing more over the past few weeks which is making a big difference to the side,” he said. The Subway North East Bushrangers have handed the Oakleigh Warriors a 26-point defeat in what was probably the side’s most complete game of the season. Continuing on their improved play from the last month, the Bushrangers took an early lead and didn’t look back. The Bushrangers were able to carve up the Warriors zone defence with some crisp ball movement and great movement off the ball. Josh McKay, Jon Lindhe and Trent McMullen all shared the load of containing Oakleigh’s league stand out Andrew Kaban, and while he scored 34 points, he was made to cough the ball up nine times. The Bushrangers had five players score in double figures, with Jon Lindhe leading the way to finish with 25 points and nine rebounds. Dylan Webb fought hard inside for 18 points and eight rebounds. Josh McKay battled foul trouble but still had 10 points and nine rebounds. The Bushrangers now turn their attention to this Sunday’s game against the Maccabi Warriors. The Lady Bushrangers have the weekend off. Sam McDonald North East Bushrangers

O&M FOOTY2014 Team spirit is everything The Raiders beat the Bulldogs 70-60 in another disappointing loss for the Doggies.

Simon

Says with SIMON CORR YOU play sport to succeed. In individual sports you strive to achieve a personal best and attempt to win in everything you compete in. In team sports there are no individual personal bests and the team’s achievements and results are clearly measured on victory. In team sport winning is everything. You work hard to play your role and you celebrate a win together. Winning builds confidence and camaraderie, it is reward for effort, it’s simply awesome. The euphoria of victory is contagious and addictive, it makes the team hungry. It also makes training in the cold and wet and any other inconveniences experienced along the way bearable. What if you’re not winning, and in fact don’t win all season? This is the conundrum the players, coaching staff and in fact supporters of the Wodonga Football Club is facing at the moment. After being defeated last Sunday by fellow Wodonga Club the Raiders, the Bulldogs have now lost 12 games in a row and are yet to experience a win this season. This no doubt will be having a devastating effect on the playing group as they struggle to get through one of the toughest periods in their proud history. Already savaged by injury, somehow the coaching staff must try to continue to lift the team’s spirits week after week as they are knocked to the canvas. It will be tough for all involved, but it is a part of sport and in fact life. We can’t always be winners, and you don’t necessarily get rewarded for trying, something no doubt the Doggies are doing. As hard as it may seem right now, this young playing group will however be the better for the experience. Times of adversity are character building. Loosing is a part of life and it concerns me that they are trying to eradicate this experience from junior sport. Hang in there Wodonga and stay strong together and your reward will not be far away. The final five is basically set, with fifth place the only spot still up for

Ben Klemke making a tackle on Tim Kindellan.

Shaune Brewer makes a break. grabs. Ironically the two Wangaratta sides will fight it out for this position with the Rovers a game clear in fifth spot, but they will need to be careful not to drop any unexpected games. Now that the Wodonga Raiders are back on the winners list they will take some renewed confidence down to the W.J. Findlay Oval for this weekend’s

clash with the Wangaratta Rovers. The Rovers were poor last week, and if Raiders forward Dean Limbach can continue his stellar year an upset could be on the cards. Wodonga will also consider themselves a chance when they host the Wangaratta Magpies. The Magpies

only just defeated Myrtleford last week and if the Doggies get a sniff they will be keen to put 12 weeks of disappointment behind them. The Myrtleford Alpine Saints will host reigning Premier Yarrawonga. The Pigeons are still not playing their best football and a trip up the Alpine Valley

is always challenging. The good news for Yarrawonga is that their star midfielder and former Morris Medallist Craig Ednie is getting back to careerbest form, and I would expect him to relish in the conditions at the McNamara Reserve. Corowa Rutherglen have a tough test against the undefeated Albury Tigers. The Roos showed definite signs of improvement last week against Yarrawonga and are not far from matching it with the Big 3. Albury will regain the services of Lonnie Hampton and Joel Mackie from representative duties and should have the power to get the job done. Finally North Albury, who were great against Albury last week, will meet Lavington in an interesting clash at Bunton Park. The Hoppers definitely have the basis to springboard themselves into finals contention in years to come, but the Panthers are still eyeing off the Minor premiership an incentive too great to see them slip up here.
