CATS HEAR COACH ON HARD RUN TO FINALS

ROTTEN apples, rock-hard rice and other meals that “look like excrement” are on the menu at Barwon Health’s McKellar Centre, according to patients. They have accused the centre of leaving pre-cooked meals in warmers for two days before serving them to rehabilitation patients and elderly-care residents at the North Geelong facility. But Barwon Health has defended its food, saying patients and residents might misunderstand the “complexity” of serving 3500 meals a day. FULL STORY, PAGE 3

HARD TO SWALLOW: John Druzic’s photographs of food he considered substandard during his stay at Barwon Health’s McKellar Centre.

Patients slam servings By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE FOOD at Barwon Health’s McKellar Centre is so bad that it’s sometimes inedible and resembles excrement, according to recent rehabilitation patients. Hamlyn Heights’ John Druzic and Newtown’s Ian McLean said the food was prepared two days in advance and kept in warmers during their weeks as patients. Fruit was often rotten and bruised, other food “oozed oils and fats and pasta and rice dishes were dry and hard, they complained. Mr Druzic, an amputee, said he was a patient for more than five weeks

after a complete knee replacement, while Mr McLean spent almost three months in the centre after a leg amputation. “I was absolutely appalled at the food, Mr Druzic said. “But my main concern is, unlike myself, there are many people living at McKellar who are unable to speak for themselves and this is what they’re being served up on a daily basis. “My dad is there in the nursing home and they’re serving that stuff to him. I feel for my dad and the other people there. Mr Druzic said he and Mr McLean complained to their unit manager and requested to speak with the catering

manager but were “avoided for two weeks. When they eventually spoke with the catering manager they were told the kitchen prepared meals two days in advance and kept them in warmers before serving. Mr McLean said he turned to friends to bring in replacement meals, went out to get his own food or filled up on sandwiches. “We called it dinner lotto because you never quite knew what you were going to get and it rarely resembled the description. A Barwon Health spokesperson said the McKellar commercial kitchen delivered 3500 meals a day.

“Hospital food is a regular subject of comment but usually this is without a clear understanding of the complexity of delivering meals to people with a wide range of conditions and requirements, she said. “Some patients and residents have difficulty swallowing, so if they order a meal such as roast pork or lamb it will be pureed to an appropriate consistency; it won’t look like how it’s served at home. “We utilise a cook/chill process for all our meals, which are then delivered in specialised climate-controlled trolleys before being distributed to patients and residents.

Cafe serving up musical menus for Corio oldies

Word first AUSTRALIA’S “largest non-fiction literature festival will bring writers and readers together in Geelong next month, organisers have announced. Deakin University, City of Greater Geelong and the region’s library corporation will run the inaugural Word for Word at Deakin’s Waterfront campus from 15 to 17 August.

‘Poofter’ apology A TELEVISION footy commentator has apologised on air for calling Geelong Cats star Harry Taylor a “big poofter. Brian Taylor issued the slur while watching video of the champion defender waving to the crowd after his 150th match for Geelong.

Death finding A “MAJOR medical event or an accident probably killed the former boss of Lara’s Barwon Prison when he went missing on a hunting trip three years ago, according to a coroner’s report. Deputy State Coroner Iain West rejected theories David Prideaux was murdered, committed suicide or faked his death in the Victorian Alps.

Tourism boost GEELONG has highlighted itself as a tourist attraction to 350 delegates at an annual tourism conference, according to Mayor Darryn Lyons. He said the 2014 Victorian Tourism Conference, at The Pier, was a “great opportunity to showcase the region to industry professionals.

A GOLD coin donation guarantees elderly patrons a morning of entertainment at a new Seniors CafĂŠ in Corio’s Cloverdale Community Centre. The initiative is quickly becoming a hub of the seniors live music scene in the northern suburbs. On the last Wednesday of every month seniors of all ages have been enjoying a vibrant cafe setting over cake and coffee while socialising and enjoying live music. The cafĂŠ program commences again from 1am to 11.30am Wednesday for term-two sessions Manager Sue Hartigan said Cloverdale had been focusing on presenting live music for the past two years but had now expanded the program. “This year we decided to combine a seniors activity with live music, so we’re trialling it at the moment,â€? she said. “Last terms three sessions were really popular. Last time we had about 20 people turn up, so we’re running it again this termâ€?. Ms Hartigan said the cafe helped elderly residents in Geelong’s northern suburbs deal with isolation issues. “There’s no place to go and get a coffee apart from the shopping centre and there’s also very little live entertainment. “The social space is very limited, so we have created a space where people can come and hang out, pop in and have a coffee and listen to music.â€? Ms Hartigan said the entertainment suited the cafe’s casual atmosphere. “As a neighbourhood house we’re more informal and very friendly and welcoming. People can come and go as they like – they don’t have to come right on 10am.â€? Ms Hartigan said the cafe would unveil new musicians as the program developed. “The idea is really just to have a lovely social morning with live music.â€? The program will also run on 27 August and 24 September.

FIVE films over three days will form the basis of a movie festival at Queenscliff next weekend. Organisers said the Bellarine Lighthouse Films program would feature “fine-art movies at Queenscliff Town Hall from 25 to 27 July.

Carbon tax ‘cost 90 jobs at Boral plant’ By NOEL MURPHY THE CARBON tax led to the loss of 90 jobs at Boral’s Waurn Ponds plant, MP Sarah Henderson has told federal parliament. “While there were various pressures on Boral, the carbon tax ensured that Boral was less competitive on the international market, Ms Henderson said. “The cost of making clinker was driven higher by some 18 per cent because of the carbon tax and we now we see Blue Circle Southern Cement importing clinker and only 20 or so employees remaining at this production facility. Boral, now known as Blue Circle Southern Cement, announced the 90 job cuts in December 2012 under the previous Labor government. The company began importing cement clinker after a business review in light of the strong Aussie dollar, cheap shipping

costs and high energy costs. Blue Circle spokesperson Kylie Fitzgerald told the Independent the carbon tax was one of several contributing factors to changes at the Waurn Ponds plant. Ms Fitzgerald said the financial impact of repealing the carbon tax for manufacturers like Blue Circle remained an unknown. “It’s still a little unclear, she said. “It’s not clear what the alternative will be and what the costs associated with that might be. Ms Henderson took aim at Labor Member for Corio Richard Marles, who she claimed had failed to stand up for his manufacturing-dependent electorate. “He has not stood up for his electorate, he has not stood up for manufacturing, she told parliament.

“He has not stood up for the many important employees and employers in his electorate and spoken out against this tax that he knows is driving up the cost of electricity and gas and really hurting manufacturers. Geelong companies such as the IXL Group have expressed strong support for the repeal of the carbon tax. In a recent submission to the Renewable Energy Target (RET) review, IXL Group also warned of jobs in danger at its Geelong and Adelaide plants if the Federal Government abandoned or significantly changes the RET. “Making the RET inoperative would jeopardise the 40 jobs at IXL Solar in northern Adelaide and make additional investment at this plant unlikely, director Robert Backwell said. “It would also threaten additional jobs at the IXL plant in Geelong – which makes components for IXL Solar - and

make it even more challenging for IXL to successfully complete its transition away from automotive as that industry winds down. Mr Marles did not respond to requests for comment on the carbon tax, instead saying the Abbott Government should dump its “toxic budget if it was serious about improving the cost of living for people in Geelong. “The Abbott Government can also start by explaining why the only plan for jobs they have is how to get rid of them, he said. “Alcoa is closing its doors in only a few short weeks and we still have got not one single dollar or plan for how Geelong will cope with this flood of lost jobs. $2 billion wind farm on hold – page 9

Double Take CONGRATULATIONS to the local volunteers of Red Cross Barwon Zone 6, who celebrated the charity’s 100th anniversary in Geelong this week. City Hall hosted a civic reception to mark the occasion, with members and dignatiries cutting a cake and chatting about the past century’s good work in the region. Member Dorothy O’Donnell used the occasion to call on the “next generation to keep the group thriving “for another 100 years. Now that’s a challenge, given that members of the incumbent generation have notched up as much as 70-plus years of continual service.

A LARGE 12-wheeled crane truck was reversing out from the manicured gardens near the Waterfront skate park the other morning. The recent rain left the soft soil in no position to cope with the weight of the truck or the size of its wheels, leaving a hapless council worker to clean up the mess. “That bloke must be a terrible golfer, a passer-by was heard to remark, “look at the divots he’s left! The level of publicity that Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons is attracting from Twitter has gone to his head – literally. This week he dyed the social media giant’s logo beside his Mohawk for an appearance in the company’s Discover Your World promotion. “I’m honoured to be recognised as one of Twitter’s must influential Australian users, he declared. Some were impressed. “The mayor with the best hair. Keep up the great work, Darryn, commented reader Sam below the Independent’s online story about the logo. Less inspired were others, such as Peter Mobbs who repeated the mayor’s comment on the Indy’s Facebook page with a single-word response. “Cough.

NOT since Cadel Evans’ Gallic success has Geelong seen a local cyclist don the illustrious yellow jersey. But for Independent managing editor Tony Galpin, seeing a namesake take the Tour de France race lead was something of a thrill. Lotto-Belisol sprinter Tony Gallopin donned the meilleur jeune overnight Sunday in the stage nine leg between Gerardmer and Mulhouse, putting a Frenchman at the helm on France’s national Bastille Day. Our Galpin’s take on matters? Unashamedly Aussie. “Sacre bloody bleu! he exclaimed. “They spelled my name wrong.

Alcoa in site sale negotiations By NOEL MURPHY ALCOA has received multiple expressions of interest in its Anglesea coal mine and power plant, a spokesperson has confirmed. Eighty jobs could be lost at the plant unless Alcoa sells it after closing the company’s Point Henry operations, set to lay off 520 staff on 1 August in a first round of 800 job losses. The Anglesea plant has supplied 40 per cent of Point Henry’s electricity since 1969 via a 45km high-voltage powerline.

Essential Services Commission exended the power plant’s licence last month Alcoa has previously indicated “general interest” in the plant among potential buyers but this week confirmed it was formally going through an expression of interest process with multiple suitors. “We’ve had some but I can’t tell you exactly how many,” the spokesman said when asked how many potential buyers were involved. “The process, as you’d appreciate, is subject to commercial confidentiality. We called for expressions of interest and

we’re working through that process, so that information wouldn’t be public. “We can’t comment on individual companies that might have expressed an interest.” Alcoa hopes to sell the plant before the end of the year. The Anglesea plant’s excess electricity would go into the national market as Alcoa winds up the Point Henry operations. Australian Workers Union state secretary Ben Davis welcomed the news of potential buyers. “If Alcoa is talking to potential buy-

ers that’s fantastic,” Mr Davis said. “Obviously there are confidentiality issues that we’ll have to respect but we’d encourage any sale. It would be welcome if it meant looking after the jobs of 80 people at the power station.” Some Anglesea residents want the facility closed, arguing it is a dangerous polluter and health risk. Surf Coast Air Action week condemned “suggestions” an unnamed foreign-controlled company was conducting due diligence on the Alcoa site. “It’s outrageous that the Anglesea and

Surf Coast communities are being kept in the dark about an issue that is of vital interest to them,” said group spokesperson Dr Jacinta Morahan. “I would urge any company that may be interested in Anglesea to consult openly with the community so that it can properly understand the depth of the opposition to the continued operation of the mine and power plant. “This issue is not going to go away and a sale without community consultation or support will simply intensify the opposition.”

Lost first shot landed on Lonnie farm, says resident Police ‘up 17%’ By NOEL MURPHY

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

THE ALLIES’ first mortar fired in World War I landed in farmland west of Point Lonsdale rather than in Port Phillip Bay, claims long-time resident Kevin Roberts. Historians and military researchers have tried to pinpoint the six-inch shell’s location for years but, with the centenary of The Great War’s outset just weeks away, ramped-up efforts to locate the shell remain unsuccessful. However, Mr Roberts said the shell went nowhere near German cargo ship SS Pfalz as it tried to exit Port Phillip on 5 August 1914. “No one believes me but a lot of locals know the true story,” he said. “It landed in Victor Phipps’ property where the shell-grit works were. He was about 17 and he found it on the ground the same day it landed there. “He picked it up and brought it home. He took it to the house up there on Shell Rd, the same red-roofed house that’s still there. “The Phipps had it up there after the war and the army had a big procession out there ... and the army confiscated the shell and took it back to the fort at Queenscliff.

GEELONG and the Surf Coast have received an extra 60 police since November 2010, according to State Government. Premier Denis Napthine said the extra cops represented a 17 per cent increase in police across the region as part of an additional 1700 frontline staff state-wide. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said the increase meant police could fight more local crime. But Police Association secretary Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles said the number of first-response officers based in Geelong had actually decreased since November 2010. “If this wasn’t the case we wouldn’t be seeing resources at Lara, Portarlington, Queenscliff and Drysdale being diverted to Geelong at the expense of policing in those communities,” he said. “We’ve recently seen the Bellarine nightshift van do 10 jobs in Geelong in one night then another 14 jobs in Geelong the next night, including jobs all the way to Little River. “We’re also about to see the Corio police station doors close at night from August. This wouldn’t be happening if there were sufficient first-response members in the region. “We need to further boost the number of first-response officers in Geelong and surrounding stations and not keep robbing Peter to pay Paul.”

BEST SHOT: Kevin Roberts at Victoria Villa, on famland where he believes the Allies’ first mortar shot of WWI landed. 123921 Picture: REG RYAN beyond the Point Lonsdale township. But historian Keith Quinton, author of Stop the Pflaz, said research had revealed where the shell splashed down and where it should lie in the bay. “I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings...but there’s just no possibility what was found in Phipps’ paddock was the first shot,” he said.

“Years later Victor went to the fort to show the shell to some people but no one knew where it was, so it’s probably either been put in the rubbish by some new sergeant major or gone to a private collection.” Mr Roberts, who said he had lived on a neighbouring property all his life, suggested the Fort Nepean gunner who fired at the Pfalz would have aimed above the ship and also

“In some ways, however, the story has a level of credibility. There were tales around of a shell in the sergeants mess at the fort for a couple of decades that had been found on the peninsula somewhere on the Bellarine side. “The shot was directed towards Pope’s Eye. If you can imagine it ricocheting around to Point Lonsdale...it just isn’t possible.”

CUTS: Faster planning processes will attract investors to central Geelong, says Darryn Lyons. Picture: REG RYAN

‘European city’ plan for centre

1144417-EG29-14

CENTRAL Geelong could be “just like the best cities in Europe” with a new planning system to slash red tape, according to Mayor Darryn Lyons. He said adopting a “tweaked” version of the VicSmart system would be a “big improvement”, cutting waiting times and processes for common applications such as liquor licences and shop alterations. “One of the reasons I ran for mayor was to cut through planning red tape. This is something I’m absolutely passionate about. “The new VicSmart system will streamline the planning process in central Geelong with 10day turnaround times for the six most-common types of applications. VicSmart will remove the

time factor from applications including café and restaurant liquor licences between trading hours of 7am to 11pm.” “Also of benefit is an increase in the VicSmart trigger point for shop fit-outs and alterations from $50,000 to $250,000 and a waiver of car parking for the reuse of existing buildings.” Council voted last week to seek the Planning Minister’s approval to incorporate VicSmart into the scheme for central Geelong. “We’ve taken the state-wide VicSmart system and tweaked it for central Geelong to open the gates to investment and development,” Cr Lyons said. He expected the proposed

changes would “fast-track development and investment needed to attract more people to live and work in our city centre … just like the best cities in Europe”. “Faster decision-making means less cost for applicants and more certainty for potential investors and business start-ups.” Cr Lyons said the planning changes would help deliver on council’s plan for 10,000 residents, 10,000 students and 30,000 workers in central Geelong. Council has also sought changes to reduce or remove conditions limiting specific uses, such as accommodation, in particular “sub-precincts” as well as the removal of notice, objection and appeal provisions for applications.

Deakin blocks music ‘pirates’ DIGITAL music piracy could be a thing of the past – and music companies billions of dollars better off – courtesy of new technology developed at Deakin University. Researchers at Deakin’s Waurn Ponds and Burwood campuses have developed a new watermarking technique that leaves a trail of pirates who illegally

distribute files. The technology is tipped to save 35 billion Euros a year in Europe alone. Project lead researcher Associate Professor Yong Xiang, lead researcher on the project, said 95 per cent of music downloads were illegal, presenting a “major issue” for the music industry. “In Australia around 2.8 mil-

lion people download music illegally via file sharing networks. This causes enormous amounts of lost sales revenue and royalties to producers, musicians and other performers. “In European countries alone, music piracy would result in E240 billion retail revenue loss in the period from 2008 to 2015.”

Assoc Prof Xiang said the watermarking technology hid data such as publisher name, signature, logo, ID number and other user information into the actual multimedia object without affecting its normal usage. “What we did was to enable music file owners and relevant law enforcement authorities to

use a secret key to extract the watermark data from the watermarked multimedia object. “Watermarking technology can be used to prove copyright ownership, trace the source of illegal distribution and verify the authenticity of files.” Deakin’s School of Information Technology worked with re-

searchers from Japan’s Aizu University to develop the anti-piracy process. Their research is set to be published in the latest edition of IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing. The proposed method can overcome various attacks used to undermine previous onlinie music security technologies.

Joel broacasts stories of Geelong from home studio Furphy brewing By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

RADIO DAZE: Joel Carnegie in his Geelong West studio. 123742 Picture: REG RYAN

“I was able to speak to many of them about the difficulty of adapting to Australian life while enduring the uncertainty, coming from such diverse and harrowing backgrounds. “For some it’s the only weekly activity that has any meaning.” Mr Carnegie said although Australians struggled

with the divisive issue internally, the issue was attracting global interest. Since returning from London last year Mr Carnegie has worked on a range of stories about Geelong. “There are so many great stories coming from the region. It’s wonderful to be able to share these at a national level,” he said.

By NOEL MURPHY THE GREAT Aussie colloquialism, the furphy, has been resurrected at Geelong’s Little Creatures brewery. The World War I word for a howler of a story whipped up around Furphy water carts has been fast-forwarded a century and reinvented as a beer. In keeping with its heritage, Geelong’s new Furphy’s Refreshing Ale is based on an old-style German ale, Kolsch. J Furphy & Sons played its part, too, supplying Little Creatures with tanks to brew the beer. The launch of Furphy’s Refreshing Ale this week revealed a clean, crisp, delicately balanced beer with subtle fruity flavours and aromas. Matt Windsor, of Little Creatures owner Lion Nathan, said the company “been thinking about brewing a beer for Geelong” before opening the brewery over a year ago. “We wanted to create something that the people of Geelong could proudly call their own their own beer that comes fresh from their local brewery.” The Furphy clan was chuffed to have their name on the ale. “We’re feeling very special to have our family name honoured in this way. It’s not often you drink a beer with your name on it,” said Adam Furphy, a great-great grandson of the founder. “The team has done a fantastic job to create Furphy’s Refreshing Ale and we are very much in line with the beer’s philosophy – proudly Victorian and supportive of local communities.”

AS A PROFESSIONAL storyteller, Geelong West broadcaster Joel Carnegie is always on the lookout for interesting stories. “I’m passionate about telling stories that challenge or deepen our relationship with the world around us,” Mr Carnegie said from his home studio. He has set up his own media production house, called The Space Company, generating stories and content for ABC Radio National, Fairfax Media, ABC Classic FM and German international network Deutsche Welle. Mr Carnegie’s story, Voices Without Borders, on Australian asylum seekers, has been picked up by the German broadcaster’s World Link program. “This story is one of hope, courage and above all voice and will also add a new Australian perspective to the international discussion about asylum seekers,” he said. The documentary feature is about a Melbourne choir comprising boat arrivals and set up by Geelong’s Choir of Hard Knocks director, Jonathan Welsh. “What I wanted to do was add a different perspective and add a human face and voice to the issue,” Mr Carnegie said. “We often don’t hear from the people themselves and this gives them a voice across our own borders to understand their perspective. “What struck me the most was that they are very much like us; they have the same hopes, dreams and fears as the rest of us.” Mr Carnegie said the choir became the only way asylum seekers connected to Australian society as they awaited visa application outcomes.

Canberra review puts Geelong power source in doubt

$2b island wind farm on hold

By NOEL MURPHY

A $2 BILLION 200-turbine wind farm to power Geelong is on hold while Federal Government reviews its Renewable Energy Target (RET) scheme. Hydro Tasmania said it would not invest in the giant King Island TasWind project, which would be the largest wind farm in the Southern Hemisphere, while the RET was in limbo. “We continue to investigate the feasibility of wind farm projects in Tasmania, including the King Island project,” TasWind spokesperson Sam Meyer told the Independent. “However, until there’s certainty about the future of the RET we’re not in a position to make significant financial

use the winds of the Roaring Forties to provide electricity directly to the Geelong region via undersea cables. The project would provide enough power for up to 240,000 houses - more than three times the dwellings in Geelong and over five per cent of Australia’s existing RET. A Hydro Tasmania submission to the review said the “boom-bust” nature of RET policy had been destructive to the industry. The submission warned that international renewable energy companies and investors would probably react negatively to substantial RET changes and would be difficult to attract back to the sector. “The RET has driven the growth of the renewable energy industry within

Australia and has encouraged several major international energy companies to invest in the Australian energy market,” the submission stated. “Hydro Tasmania has direct experience of this, including through our current partnership with Shenhua Clean Energy. Without the RET, renewable energy skills, expertise and employment would be lost.” The project has sparked anxiety among conservationists over its potential impact on the orange-bellied parrot, which uses the island as a breeding ground. Earlier this year a No TasWind Farm Group argued the project would threaten the parrot. One of the rare birds was sighted near Anglesea in May after its release in Tas-

PUBLIC MEETINGS NOTICE OF COUNCIL MEETING The next meeting of the Greater Geelong City Council will be held at the Council Conference and Reception Centre, City Hall, Little Malop Street entrance, Geelong on Tuesday 8 July 2014 commencing at 7.00pm. The meeting is open to the public.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN LAUGHTER is still the best medicine - and Geelong’s own laughing queen has forayed into print to spread the message. Geelong Laughter Club founder Phillipa Challis has contributed a chapter to a new book called Now We’re Talking: Health for Mature Women. The book, to be launched by Catriona Rowntree, promises to supply all that’s needed for a zestful life in an easy read. As well as laughter therapy, the book covers topics such as exercise, mind-set, Pilates, hypnotherapy, chiropractic, menopause, “thought field therapy” and genetic profiling. Other authors include Maggie Beer, Lisa Curry, Shelley Taylor-Smith and Diana Williams. The book launch coincides with the 12th birthday of the laughter club, still meeting weekly, rain hail or shine, at Eastern Beach. “Every Saturday you can find us between the wading pool and flagpole and no matter the weather we have never missed a session in that time,” Ms Challis said. “Thousands of people have participated in the half hour laughter session over the years since the club was started.” The book will be launched 6.30pm on 31 July at Waurn Ponds Library, with ticket proceeds going to Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. Ms Challis said bookings to attend the launch were available at grlc.vic.gov.au/events or by phoning 5272 6010.

Shell sale cleared By NOEL MURPHY SHELL’S Corio refinery sale to Vitol is set to be finalised on 1 August. The sale, to the world’s largest independent oil trader, is part of a $2.6 billion deal announced in February when the Swiss-based company also snapped up Shell’s 870 Australian petrol stations. Vitol said it was finalising the sale after Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board approved the sale. The refinery will be re-branded Viva Energy. The 60-year-old refinery employs 450 staff and 150 contractors to refine 120,000 barrels a day for petrol, diesel, LPG, bitumen, jet fuel, solvent and Avgas. Vitol executives suggested in February that the refinery’s jobs were safe but also stressed that workers might have to be flexible and open to changes.

mania late last year. Dubbed ‘Blue L Silver’, the threeyear-old captive-bred female’s arrival after a 580km journey up the west coast of Tasmania over King Island and across Bass Strait gave “fresh hope for the survival of the beleaguered species”, said Save the Orange-Bellied Parrot campaigner Debbie Lustig. Orange-bellied parrots number 70 in the wild, with another 330 in a captivebreeding program. The parrot became a political issue several times in the past when its presence conflicted with developments including a petrochemical complex proposed for Point Lillias and a $220 million wind farm at Bald Hills in Victoria south-east.

ONE of the world’s richest men will help develop the leadership skills of a Geelong librarian. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is sponsoring a two-year program for selected library staff such as Deanne Verity. She will be one of six Australian representatives at the International Network of Emerging Library Innovators (INELI) Ocean program launch in Melbourne later this month. The Gates foundation sponsors the program to help spread internet access and skills. Ms Verity, a children’s and youth services coordinator for Geelong Regional Library Corporation, will engage in various professional development and networking activities as part of the program. The library corporation said her appointment to INELI was a “great honour”. Corporation chief Patti Manolois, herself an INELI member in 2011, said Ms Verity was an “outstanding” staff member.

THE LIBERAL battle to win the critical state seats of Geelong, South Barwon and Bellarine is moving into top gear with Premier Denis Napthine and MPs stepping up their visits to the region. Mr Napthine appeared in Geelong three times last week to spruik a student housing project, a new Headspace office, a tourism conference, and the new Epworth Geelong hospital. The visits coincided with bullying allegations against Geelong councillor and Labor South Barwon candidate Andy Richards and amid job cuts at Ford, Alcoa and Avalon Airport. Federal Liberal Member for

Corangamite Sarah Henderson has also maintained a steady barrage of announcements and appearances. Political commentator Antony Green has identified Bellarine, presently held by Labor’s Lisa Neville, as a must-win seat for the Liberals. He said the loss of Labor-voting Newcomb, Whittington and St Albans Park to the seat of Geelong and their replacement with traditional Liberal stronghold Barwon Heads from South Barwon has converted Ms Neville’s 1.4 per cent margin in 2010 into a notional Liberal majority of 2.5 per cent. “This is a must-win seat for the Liberal party but Labor has the sitting member and in a re-

gional seat such as Bellarine the sitting member factor can be more important,” he said on his ABC blog. “Polls have indicated a decline in support for the Victorian coalition since 2010, grim news for the Napthine Government. Unless the Coalition can improve its state wide-position, its position in the key marginal seats makes it difficult for the government to win the 2014 election.” Labor has been electorally quiet in comparison to the Liberals. Veteran MP Ms Neville has tackled issues across the region but Cr Richards, apart from rejecting bullying claims, has been relatively quiet, as has Labor’s candidate for Geelong, Christine Couzens.

Region unites for jobs battle By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A UNITED effort to tackle Geelong’s jobs challenge is underway. G21 Alliance chief executive Elaine Carbines said tackling joblessness was a clear priority for the region. “Changes to Geelong’s large manufacturing base are reshaping the local economy and jobs market, Ms Carbines said. “The pending Ford and Alcoa plant closures and the recent departure of QANTAS heavy maintenance can’t be ignored, so the timing could not be better for the introduction of an innovative jobs-creation project that has been quietly coming together behind the scenes for some time. Ms Carbines said G21 Region Opportunities for Work (GROW) was a joint initiative between G21, its member councils and charity Give Where You Live, which provides financial support to local welfare agencies. “In its first stage GROW will produce a comprehensive business plan based around the significant resources already being directed to employment generation and job placement by many organisations in our region. The aim is not to replace the good work of others but to ensure a coordinated and systematic approach across the region. Ms Carbines said the GROW business plan would focus on areas of disadvantage by drawing on the experience of the busi-

areas of high unemployment back into work. State Government has supported GROW with $100,000 from a Victorian Regional Growth Fund, while G21, its five councils and Give Where You Live have provided matching funding. “The positive community response already emerging in support of GROW is further evidence that people and organisations want the region to work together to meet social and economic challenges, Ms Carbines said.

Asian export ‘massive’ GEELONG’S potential as an export food bowl through Avalon Airport is being promoted across south-east Asia. A recently-returned Victorian Government trade mission to Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand pushed the advantages of fresh produce with a 24-hour turnaround. Trade mission member Chris Walsh, an agribusiness executive of Herne Hill, said he found a “massive opportunity right on our doorstep”. “In Australia we tend to live in a bit of a bubble, all telling each other that we’re a food bowl and becoming a big

player in the world market, but when you get over there you realise we’re quite small in world terms.” Mr Walsh said the region was a huge potential market, Indonesia alone with the population of American right on Australia’s doorstep. “It’s a really massive opportunity in south-east Asia because there are so many markets, so many entrepreneurs and a lot of big businesses. “We also have to realise that businesses in Asia take a long-term view. Often they don’t look to be immediately profitable, they’re not trying to make a quick buck.

EXPORT: Chris Walsh in Thailand during the trade mission. “Business people in Asia want to want to build personal relationships, they want to

work with people and get to know them. “That means it’s more than just a phone call or email - it means getting over there and sitting with them and having a coffee, inviting them to Geelong and hosting them here, building closer ties. That’s what they really enjoy.” Mr Walsh said the trade mission gave him extra confidence in Asian opportunities. “Logistically, with Avalon we’re in a good spot – it’s only a short flight and costs can be kept down. “It’ll be hard work but if we want to break out of the mould of what we have been usually doing in agribusiness-

es then I can’t stress enough to pursue these types of markets.” Mr Walsh said the trade mission was all about networking, making contacts, opening dialogue and exploring opportunities. “I was amazed at the amount of work going on. The State Government has people on the ground working behind the scenes. “It was not something I was really aware of and I appreciate that a lot more now, so if businesses are interested in widening their horizons they need to be going to these events because they’ll meet people and find opportunities.”

Letters Citizens’ plan for city I WAS taken aback by Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s “plan for Geelong” (Independent, 11 July). Just stinging together separate projects, as he did, does not create a plan. I think Geelong desperately needs a proper coherent plan. Mr Abbott opposes government-led planning, preferring small government and letting the markets find a way forward. It seems no level of government wants to produce a coherent plan for Geelong; politicians at all levels just list projects and say the job is done. Perhaps it’s time for citizen power. Readers should write to the editor of the Geelong Independent if they want to help. Dr Quentin Farmar-Bowers East Geelong

Council must ban fracking EIGHT weeks ago I asked Geelong councillor Andy Richards about his and council’s position on fracking. As I was unhappy with his response, I wrote him a letter with detailed information about fracking’s dangers. Seven weeks later there was no response. A week ago an email to him also failed to gain any comment, which demonstrates he disregards community consultation in this matter. Posing my questions to him again during question time at last week’s council meeting brought only more frustration as he spoke in generalities and not on specifics. Nevertheless, my questions revealed that council has separated the fracking issue from its incomplete environmental management strategy report and that council intended to discuss this at its first meeting in August. Could this mean councillors are likely to vote on the potential destruction of the region’s water supplies, the devastation of our farmlands and a host of other social, environmental and health issues associated with fracking while not being accountable to the community they claim to represent? Now is the time for Geelong’s community to voice its opposition to fracking by communicating to councillors before the August meeting that we do not want our land fracked. Everyone should attend the 12 August meeting. Lyn Manson Frack Free Geelong

Stick to roads, rates, rubbish and football I WAS appalled to read that both Geelong’s council and Geelong Football Club had joined the Australian Marriage Equality bandwagon (Independent, 11 July) and, in the case of the council, had written to local parliamentarians in support of same-sex marriage. Surely a national issue with international implications is totally outside the domain of City of Greater Geelong and should not have been entered into. According to the report, the football club justified its support “in respect of diversity and saying no to discrimination of any kind”. What a load of rubbish! There is a vast difference between respect and non-discrimination. While the club welcomes one-eyed supporters, it would probably discriminate against one-eyed players over 50 years. Marriage as an institution originated for the purpose of procreation and nurturing of children. The drive for same-sex marriages is based on the issues of property and inheritance, which

fossil fuels is a huge threat to our economies, our lifestyle and our grandchildren. We are technologically and financially capable of change. However, there is a massive gap between what needs to be done and what is planned, so why are we taking this risk? It is shameful and embarrassing that Australia is planning to backflip on this critical issue when most economies are going the other way. Mark Ruseler Lara

Wreath an insult

Don’t believe, just accept

WHAT an insult it was to witness on our TV news the Japanese Prime Minister laying a wreath on our sacred National War Memorial. Here is a man who made a speech in our parliament, who mentions the war but, as all his previous PM’s have done, has never apologised for the murder of our nurses, our 8031 prisoners of war who died in captivity as the result of treatment by the Japanese or the Sandakan death march in which another 2348 died as a direct result of Japanese murder. The German Government apologised for its atrocities and paid compensation to all who worked in their camps. The Japanese have never admitted their atrocities nor ever paid compensation to all they enslaved. Some might say it was 69 years ago but if past criminal activities can be pinned on people such as Rolf Harris why should the Japanese Government get away with it and, to rub salt into our wounds and spit in our faces, have the hide to place a wreath on our hallowed ground for those they murdered. Bob Thompson Ocean Grove

I AGREE with Ken Bain (Letters, 11 July) that Alan Barron’s voice should be heard. However, my issue is that Mr Barron et al regularly misquote, misinterpret and misrepresent in order to argue their beliefs. The danger is that his beliefs are accepted as fact by many people. Scepticism suggests that a person has an open mind. In fact, Mr Barron is a denialist, meaning he does not accept what experts say. If a sceptic is diagnosed with cancer he seeks a second opinion; a denialist goes home and says, “I don’t believe the doctor”. In 2004 Naomi Oresks published research in Science that found of 928 scientifically published articles between 1993 and 2003 none challenged the core consensus. So who should we trust? Is it the thousands of dedicated scientists or is it the doyen of denialists, the George C Marshal Institute, and its cohort, including Mr Baron? Any reasoning person would accept that burning

RAY BLACK (Letters, 11 July) correctly said I did not address the question of whether raising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) to over 400 parts per million would accelerate global warming. The short answer is CO2 does not cause global warming, irrespective of its atmospheric concentration. Over the past 17 years temperatures have gone sideways or declined slightly. One must understand the dynamics of the temperature gradient. A temperature gradient is a physical quantity that describes in which direction and at what rate temperature changes in a particular location. The temperature gradient is a dimensional quantity expressed in units of degrees, on a particular temperature scale, per unit length. The temperature gradient determines the surface temperatures of Earth and other planets in conjunction with solar radiation, which sets the overall level. Water vapour and CO2 reduce the gradient because of the temperature-levelling effect of radiation. Hence they lead to cooler surface temperatures, not warmer. Real world data shows this to be the case for water vapour. C02 can in no way cause higher surface temperatures. The assumption is made that so-called back-radiation from a cold atmosphere can transfer thermal energy to a surface that is warmer than the source of the radiation. This is a physical impossibility, as hot rises and cold air falls. Elevated levels of CO2 at higher attitudes cannot possibly cause the surface temperature of the planet to rise. CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: Tom Spalding, at front, and his bandmates play Geelong early next month.

Corio covered with Spalding By NOEL MURPHY TOM SPALDING’S alter-ego is a grinning comic-book figure tearing his shirt off to reveal a red and blue superhero’s outfit beneath. It’s apt given Spalding’s onstage liking for costume changes as a long-time impersonator of Elvis, Tom Jones and ZZ Top - remembering the words for around 200 songs as a human jukebox. He’s been the frontman for evergreen outfit Captain Spalding since the 1970s when he started out as a rock singer in Melbourne, generally working with a drummer and little else, belting out covers in boozy, smoky, crowded pubs. The band’s covers run the gamut of rock music, everything from Black Betty, Walk Like an Egyptian and Mack the Knife to My Sharona, Sex Bomb and Whip It. Likewise with the coverage of bands and solo artists such as Violent Femmes, Robert Palmer, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gerry Rafferty,

JUST SUPER: Tom Spalding’s alter ego. Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Eagles and Elton John. Spalding’s been about performance as much as playing, though. His hallmark at South Melbourne’s Star Hotel was a costume change routine, for instance. Old drummer mate Roger Deidman, of Leapy Lee and Little Arrows renown, was a crowdpleaser, too, paradiddling his way through throbbing audiences on tables, bars and chairs.

Down the years Captain Spalding has become one of Australia’s most enduring and respected cover bands. It’s proudly played more than 6000-plus gigs, from residencies at places like Geebung Polo Club, Manhattan, Edwards Tavern and the Elephant and Wheelbarrow to international shows across SouthEast Asia, backyard birthday parties and lavish corporate jobs. Spalding’ said he was now semi-retired, performing just two or three times a week. “I’m well-versed to hard work, though,” he said. “I’ve been doing music since I was 25. First in Spain full-time where I’d do seven nights a week plus afternoons, then I worked cruise ships where you’d play seven afternoons and seven nights a week. “When I formed Captain Spalding it went gang-busters.” Captain Spalding plays Corio’s Shell Club on 2 August.

Sex talk to help Geelong’s parents SPEAKING to children about the birds and the bees can be awkward for parents and carers. Fortunately for Geelong, acclaimed comedian, author and health ambassador Nelly Thomas will present her light-hearted take on the topic from 6.30pm 30 July at Simonds Stadium. Thomas will deliver The Talk to parents and carers of children in grades five, six and secondary school. Thomas’s free presentation is based on her 12 years’ experience delivering sex health shows to Victorian teenagers. The show also features a special panel of local health professionals, including Headspace project offcier Dr Sue Barker, counsellor Colleen Weir, Bellarine Secondary College nurse Raelene Newton and Kardinia Health Belmont’s Dr Michael Roberts. Women’s Health & Wellbeing Barwon South West Communications Officer Julia Thompson hoped many parents would seize the opportunity to obtain advice on dealing with the sometimes tricky topic. “Sexual health and ethics for teens is an important topic for all parents and carers – and no one delivers this type of information in a more humorous and entertaining way than Nelly Thomas. “The night is a great way to get involved with your kids’ health.”

FOR DINERS after something different, a short trip to Little River for the hotel’s Wednesday night $15 steaks is well worth the effort. The popular pub is a short walk from the train station, so patrons can feel free to down a couple of drinks in safety. The reward is the grain-fed beef expertly transformed by steak specialist chef Trevor Riseley and cooked to the customer’s liking. The country-style venue takes pride in its charming atmosphere with old-fashioned friendly service. The hidden gem is set on an acre of land, so children have plenty of play space – there’s even a park across the road – while families enjoy the childfriendly setting indoors. Whether it’s for lunch or dinner, Little River Hotel is a snug spot to while away a couple of hours during winter enjoying one of the cosy fires. The hotel also has a TAB and Keno to keep patrons entertained with a flutter. Nestled conveniently between Lara and Werribee, Little River Hotel offers the best of both worlds. Patrons can catch the happy hour between 6pm and 7pm Friday nights, drop in for a parmi on

Centrally located and close to the Barwon River and local services including Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre, Geelong Grove Retirement Village has been part of the Grovedale community for over 28 years. Geelong Grove offers you a quality lifestyle in which residents can participate in village life as little or as much as they like. The village has a great range

of resident committees and regular social activities including sing-along nights, a residents’ bar, craft activities, card groups, exercise classes, patanque, mystery tours and bingo. Many residents say they feel at home from the day they move into Geelong Grove. This can be attributed to the dedicated staff, including an on-site weekday manager, friendly residents, thriving social club with regular organised dinners, walking paths set among the village’s established gardens and the pride people take in looking after their homes and those around them. Other village highlights in-

clude a full-size bowling green, a library, pool tables, large-screen TVs, on-site caravan parking and a 24-hour emergency-call system in all homes. AS ONE of Geelong’s leading automotive servicing and repair workshops, BJT Automotive specialises in professional, personal customer service and quality workmanship. BJT Automotive’s modern, state-of-the-art workshop in Belmont features the latest in diagnostic testing and tuning equipment at dealer standard. As Geelong’s Ford specialist, the team at BJT Automotive are experts at service and repair of Ford vehicles. BJT’s Brett Turley says the workshop team remains focused on ensuring customers drive away happy every time. “Our team has extensive knowledge and experience in Ford vehicles,” Brett says. “We also service and repair all other vehicle makes and models.” Customers can rest assured that BJT Automotive will complete all works to utmost professional standard while ensuring excellent customer service. “All our work is fully guaranteed and we offer a courtesy car drop off and pick up service to our clients,” Brett says. New-vehicle warranties are unaffected for cars serviced at BJT Automotive, with Brett and his team providing manufacturers’ handbook servicing. BJT Automotive also offers air-conditioning servicing and re-gassing, suspension, brake and clutch repairs, electronic diagnostic and tuning work, EFI servicing and repairs, used-car pre-purchase inspections, fleet management and maintenance and licensed roadworthy testing. BJT Automotive operates from 8am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday at 8 Maxwell Ave, Belmont. For more information phone 5244 3337.

MOTORCYCLE Service Centre in Moolap is a family-owned-and-operated business situated less than five minutes from central Geelong. Rob Jenner, a fully-qualified mechanic for 30 years, has extensive knowledge and practical experience across all makes and models from Japan, Europe, Britain and the USA. “I’ve owned and ridden everything from Hondas to Harleys and we’ve raced Ducatis, Yamahas, Aprilias - I’ve even turned an MV Agusta upsidedown a few times!” Rob suffered a serious road-racing crash in August, temporarily closing his Motorcycle Service Centre for the first time in 15 years. “That’s racing,” Rob explains laconically. “It was pretty nasty but could have been far worse. The important thing is that I’m now pretty much 100 per cent recovered and again able to concentrate solely on our customers and their bikes.” Motorcycle Service Centre is well-known for its personal service and customer satisfaction. “I like to be able to discuss directly with the customer exactly what they want, especially on bigger jobs like serious repairs or high-performance modifications,” Rob explains. “There’s no confusion with a one-on-one discussion.” With many years as a VicRoads Licenced Vehicle Tester, Rob is among the regions most experienced and respected mechanics. “I like to think I’m reasonably fair as far as roadworthy inspections go but not a pushover,” he grins. For all motorcycle needs including roadworthies, log-book service and general service and repair for all makes and models, Motorcycle Service Centre provides professional and personalised service. Conveniently located and with private, secure parking at 336 Portarlington Rd, Moolap, Motorcycle Service centre’s business hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and Saturday by prior appointment, phone 0488 247 077.

Children are enjoying the fun of Kardinia Childcare & Kindergarten’s new outdoor space.

Great outdoor area at centre KARDINIA Childcare and Kindergarten is getting back to basics with the refurbishment of its new outdoor playground teaching children and families that “dirt doesn’t hurt.” The educators at the early learning centre were inspired by a G21 program aimed at boosting kids’ mental wellbeing through increased outdoor activity with minimised direct adult intervention. Kardinia Childcare and Kindergarten provides long day care programs for children aged to six as well as three and four-year-

old kindergarten sessions. Centre director Sue Bunting says the refurbished area has been “extended and improved significantly”. “Children tend to be more idle and inactive than they used to be with the introduction of technology such as video games and television dominating children’s time. “We’re trying to bring back a culture where children play outdoors and have opportunities to investigate and explore the natural world, where they have space to make mistakes, solve problems

and think for themselves. “We have outdoor kitchens, a designated mud pit - which the children love - and a harmony garden where the children can grow their own vegetables and interact with animals such as chickens and guinea pigs. “One of our best features is the space we have that allows children to run and experience independence and freedom in their play. IndySport Cats seek consistency bite producing in tough run to finals Lake healthy salmon On the Chris Pitman

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

GEELONG coach Chris Scott is embracing the positives of playing top-eight sides in the run home. After the bye Geelong faces North Melbourne and Fremantle in quick succession, with Hawthorn a fortnight later. “We have a reasonably tough draw on the way home,” Scott conceded at this week’s media conference. “The benefit of that is you get to play sides that are around you and if you’re good enough to beat them then you hurt their chances as well.” But as always he was cagey about overlooking GWS Giants away on Saturday night - an opportunity for the Cats to stake their first interstate scalp this season. Scott knows his charges are good enough to beat any side on its day but the issue is bringing that form when it counts most. “We’ve played really good footy in patches and we have a level of confidence that our best is good enough,” he said. “What we haven’t done is shown our best consistently through the year. “Our challenge is to be consistently good all through the game and, if you do that, things like percentage and margins tend to look after themselves.” Gaining a foothold in the top four, while a positive, was not the end game for the Cats, Scott emphasised. “(Top four is) important but we’d rather be flying and finish fifth than finish fourth and be struggling. “Having a fit squad is one of the most important things for any team having success toward the end of the year, especially given the competition is so close now. “Having the best players available and more importantly in good form is so crucial. We don’t believe we’ve put our best team together yet this season. “It’s not a matter of who has been the best team during the year; it’s a matter of who’s going the best at the end.” In contrast to last season, when flexibility was seen as a goal, Geelong has sought greater stability this year as injuries necessitated a number of team changes. “We’ve been a little more stable in the way we’ve set up and hopefully we will be even more stable in another month,” Scott said. The continued good form of Mark Blicavs will allow the Cats’ brainstrust to reconsider running dual ruckmen as better weather produces firmer surfaces. Scott admitted the success of ruck combo of Hamish McIntosh and Dawson Simpson had been a pleasant surprise. Likewise Shane Kersten, offering a change-up for the Geelong forward line. “He’s a different type of forward to the ones we’ve played in previous years,” Scott observed. “Tom Hawkins is obviously a big, dominant power forward and Shane has capabilities to play a little bit that way but he’s different to some of your big, tall marking forwards.

FAVOURED: Shane Kersten at training this week. 123920 “He’s very good at ground level, really quick and powerful, a beautiful kick and makes the most of his opportunities, so we think he’s a good player in his

LAKE Bullen Merri produced healthy Chinook salmon for many anglers last weekend. Azi, Jenan and Senad Osmic ventured to the lake for some bank-fishing, with only a short wait after baiting up. Jenan banked a respectable rainbow trout of 1.8kg, then Senad had a few runs up and down the bank before he landed another Chinook of 1.6kg. Steve Arthy, Nick Panozzo and Steve Prior also fished Bullen Merri, catching 10 salmon. They boated all their fish while trolling deep with the aid of downriggers and Daiwa Double Clutch lures. Shane Hutchinson and son Ryley had success trolling pink Tassie Devils at depths of 18m, catching two fish of 1.8kg and 1.5kg. Closer to home, Wurdee Boluc Reservoir was sporadic. Michael Evans managed a nicely conditioned 56cm brown trout of 2.05kg on Pegron tiger minnow, while other anglers caught the odd redfin to 45cm on soft plastics. Highton’s St Augustine’s Lake produced yearling trout stocked for the school holidays. Anglers using pink Powerbait or small hard-body lures such as YoZuri Pins minnows had little trouble grassing a few fish. Mcleod’s Water Hole at Drysdale was a hot spot for large carp. Angler using lightly weighted baits on long leaders caught fish averaging over 4kg. Wild weather made saltwater angling difficult but some who braved the conditions were rewarded. Anthony Gravener and his brother-in-law fished off Barwon Heads where they were surprised to catch a 3.5kg southern calamari. Large numbers of Australian salmon broke the surface in a feeding frenzy off Geelong’s waterfront on Sunday morning. Anglers lucky enough to be on hand did extremely well casting soft plastics and small slugs, with the salmon averaging 1kg. Squid were again taken from the shallow grass beds off Clifton Springs. The size was down but anglers had little trouble filling their bag limit of 10. Jan Juc and Bancoora beaches continued fishing well for Australian salmon. Lures cast into clean, less-disturbed water caught fish. Further down the coast, the Hopkins River fished exceptional well for bream. Anglers using vibe-style lures against the cliffs caught fish to 45cm. Next door, the Merri River produced brown trout and large redfin to 2kg on hard-body lures. This weekend should be worthwhile fishing at Lake Bullen Merri, either trolling Daiwa Double Clutches deep or fishing lightly weighted baits such as glassies or pilchard fillets. Saltwater anglers could try drifting over the grass beds off Clifton Springs for squid or target pinkies and salmon along Geelong’s waterfront. own right. It’s still early days but he complements the rest of our forward line, which is in his favour at the moment.”

Warriors’ coach laments ‘shambolic’ home victory By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors has notched up its second home victory of the season with a 3-2 win over Springvale White Eagles in National Premier League. The first half was all North Geelong, with a darting Robert Zadworny run in the 10th minute finishing in a cross hesitantly dealt with by Springvale. However, Juso Julardzija was on hand to burst into the box and smash his shot out of Anthony Casset’s reach. Mark Paleka joined his strike partner on the score sheet in the 26th minute when he trapped a loose ball inside the penalty area to round his marker and place the ball well out of Casset’s desperate effort, extending the lead to 2-0. Just before half time Stipe Trbuhovic controlled his possession past a couple of challenges to slot the ball through the deep-lying Springvale defence where Julardzija pounced to finish to put the home side up 3-0.

HOME BOYS: Juso Julardzija and Mark Paleka congratulate each other after last weekend’s win. Picture: IVAN DUGANDZIC Springvale lifted its tempo after half time, with Vojislav Milojevic putting the away side on the scoreboard 10 minutes in after North Geelong turned

the ball over. A resultant cross into the near post allowed Milojevic to meet the ball unchallenged. North Geelong looked content to play cautiously, often reverting to long balls to Zadworny and Trbuhovic to keep Springvale away. With five minutes to go the ever-threatening Milojevic made his way past defenders and was fouled inside the penalty area. Milojevic took the spot kick, sending Daniel Zilic the wrong way. In the final minute Milojevic threatened again but Zilic had his measure, saving well to lock in the three points for the home side. Warriors coach Micky Colina had missed emotions after the match. “I was happy for the fans and the boys that we got a much needed home win but very disappointed in the way we played in the second half. Put simply, a shambles.” North Geelong next visits second-place Bulleen, in a match that could leave the Warriors threatening for a top-two spot.
