To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin – Healesville is a place for everyone and everything, everything is in its place… – Brett Whelan

I like everything about Healesville – it’s surrounded by beautiful mountains and forests and wineries, which is fantastic, and it’s quite easy to get to Melbourne… – Kristof Kaczmarek

I would say my favourite thing is the duality between culture and small town living… – Jesse Wilkinson

No matter where I am, I’m always more than happy to come home to Healesville…

– Molly Ilsley

After working in metropolitan Melbourne throughout my career, I love the sense of community at Healesville High School and in the town generally… – Healesville High School Principal George Perini

My favourite thing about Healesville has to be Beechworth Bakery. We built a straw bale house just out of town at the end of last year, so we spent plenty of time travelling back and forth for coffees and baked goods. I also love the artsy vibe of the community. It’s the perfect place for artists and musicians to combine and it’s a great place to raise a family… – Levi McGrath

Connecting people and communities

150 faces of Healesville Celebration of a town THIS week we celebrate the people of Healesville as the town warms up for its 150th year in November. The idea is to get a timestamp of the town as it is today – so that maybe in another 150 years people can look back on it and see how the town may have changed. People were chosen at random, down the street or at events where our reporters were out and about. That’s the great thing about this town – there’s a mixture of people from all walks of life, and opinions. We don’t profess it to cover all groups, but we believe it’s a great cross-section of people who live, work or play in town and make Healesville what it is today. This is just one of our special editions that celebrate all things Healesville. Keep an eye out for other projects throughout the year. Melissa Meehan, Editor.

“ “ I work in the city four days a week. People ask me why I live out here and I tell them it’s because of the beautiful mountains, forests and wineries… – Beata Kaczmarek

I guess I like the community spirit. We have held a recruitment drive and it’s just awesome to see people wanting to get involved… – Brit Martin

It’s a sleepy town, but there’s always wonderful things happening. We wouldn’t want to live anywhere else - we absolutely love it… – Fiona McAllister, Mayor, Yarra Ranges Council

I’ve been in Healesville since 1965. It’s not the same place. We’re not a country town, and they’ve put that down to progress, but the town has to expand, and it’s a great little town. There’s really nothing I like better than the town… – Brian Luscombe

Contributors: Jesse Graham, Kath Gannaway, Melissa Meehan, Aneeka Simonis, Jodie Symonds

It’s about the sense of community here and the viability of our recreational areas, places like Badger Weir, Maroondah Dam and particularly Donnelly’s Weir which is more tranquil. I love the fact that we can even see some of the Melbourne plays up here and that we have a local cinema… – Sharolyn Devitt

Tuesday, 29 July, 2014 Page 3W

I guess the natural environment. There’s clean water and creeks, there’s tall trees. It’s beautiful. And I think it’d be the community and the people here - there are a lot of really nice people…

I think Healesville is the most beautiful place in the country in autumn, particularly with the way the trees change colour. I think it’s amazing… – Debbie Cheesman

– Stewart Kerr

I just love mixing with people, and I appreciate how they support me… – Sharon Martin

I’ve lived here pretty much all my life; it’s a good community, a good place ... I like it… – Aaron Fabrikant

Mocha & Lime is a cozy Cafe, with fresh homemade, yummy food. We are so proud of what we have accomplished in four short years and couldn’t have done it without the people of Healesville. Kaz, Frankie and Heather would like to thank all the wonderful locals who have supported us and helped us grow into the hub we are today.

Healesville represents individualism as it’s an isolated town in many ways and there are a lot of positives that come with it… – Danny Zemp

Having the opportunity to share an exciting exhibition program (at TarraWarra Museum of Art), featuring both contemporary art and the museum’s public collection, both with visitors and the people who live in this area is a great privilege. I love the spectacular landscape of the Yarra Valley, and our changing exhibitions reflect the changing seasons outside the museum… – Victoria Lynn

Even though Healesville is expanding, quite a strong community still exists. I actually like to watch the clouds that roll in and that we’re surrounded by this amazing, ever-changing environment… – Camilla Tadich

In 1952 Healesville was a thriving timber town with some guest houses still operating. There was employment in government bodies such as the SEC and Telecom etc. There was plenty of social life with ballroom dancing and pictures and a local theatrical society, HATS. Healesville is still a great town to live in because it is a country town at heart… – Bob Ure

I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else, we care so much about everybody here…

The sense of community that I’ve had my whole life, and the natural environment, the spirit of the land I feel that I can really connect to… – Catherine Nolan

Connecting people and communities

150 faces of Healesville

It’s the strength of the community. There are many differing points of view on various things, but always the capacity to pull together… – Di Moore

One of my favourite things to do is to walk around the town and see all the changes that have taken place and in particular, have a look at the old house where I was born in 1922. It’s still there… – Robert Pockett

SVILLE EALE FAC E S OF H

I love the mountains. I love the people I’ve worked with, students and staff (Healesville High) and seeing people I taught years ago and the wonderful things they have done with their life. It’s the job opportunities I’ve had, and best of all is taking Healesville kids to remote places. At 63 I’m glad I made the list… – Sue Parry

I worked as a telephonist at the Healesville telephone exchange (PMG) and it was great fun, the girls were marvellous. You weren’t allowed to be a telephonist if you were married. We went to dances on Friday night and the pictures on Saturday. Bev McConnell and I were the only two women who drove cars in the main street back then… – Val Christie

Tuesday, 29 July, 2014 Page 9W

I love all of the nature and forests and all of the people are lovely… – Lylah Boulet

The seasons and the people, I would say. We moved up here in 1980. There’s been a huge change. It’s a different town, a different culture… – Andrew Taite

Well, I suppose the thing I like about Healesville is that it’s always got this village atmosphere. I think that people who come into here as visitors find it terribly rewarding, and they mention it when they come and see us… – Owen Torpy

What I like about Healesville is the community and how people gather around in times when people need them… – Leah Ledingham

The Lyrebird cafe at the Sanctuary makes a fantastic cuppa, and I always enjoy a hot chocolate there on a cold day… – Kevin Mason

I work in Healesville and am involved in the local footy club with the kids. Overall there’s a lot of good community spirit in Healesville. Football gets the kids out and about and with the population growing, I’m a bit hopeful we can encourage more players… – Russell de Zylva

Healesville is a town of great scenic beauty and I cannot imagine living anywhere else. My children and grandchildren were raised here - it’s where I belong. Having observed the changing landscape for 40 years, I now firmly believe the secure future of our economy and social well-being lies in welcoming and adopting the proposed Great Forest National Park… – Lorraine Leach

It was my childhood dream to become a zookeeper at Healesville Sanctuary so other than fulfilling this dream to work closely with wildlife, I love actively contributing to conservation outcomes and coming to work in such a beautiful area with a wonderful team of people and animals… – Melissa Baxter

I love driving into or out of Healesville on a rainy night, and how the streetlights look when blurred by the water on the windscreen. The town’s full of beautiful places and moments, if you just look for them. I think, after living here for so long, it’s hard to notice them because they become commonplace, but they’re always there… – Jesse Graham

î Ž New bike trail to resolve cyclists and environment group dispute

A win-win deal By JESSE GRAHAM

John Wright, Franc Smith, Xavier Bakacs, Steve Brindle, Maria McCarthy, Hayden Wright, Wilani Smit, Shaun Henchley, Gwenda Donaldson, Rocco Smit, Robyn Spearing and Max the dog all gathered to celebrate the two groups compromising on the issue of mountainbike trails. 124654 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM “I’m really happy with the way that council officers have been working with the community groups, to bring them together and achieve a great result, she said. “It’s a common good for both groups, so they both can enjoy the Mount Evelyn Aqueduct Trail for what it is. The option became a matter of de-

bate for councillors, and Cr Jim Child lambasted YRMTB for backing down on their original view of opening the closed paths. Cr Child said he wasn’t satisfied that the option could go ahead safely, with pedestrians and cyclists sharing the main trail, and that his preferred option would be to re-open both of the contested trails. 1145758-EPJ29-14

The motion succeeded by a majority vote.Yarra Ranges Council director of Environment and Engineering Mark Varmalis said the council would work with the groups in the coming months to develop possibilities for the trail. A report with the outcomes, plans and funding requirements will go back to council before any plans are finalised.

“(It is) a big caving for some reason - I’m very disappointed, he said. Councillor Jason Callanan also expressed doubts about the safety of the proposal, and voted against it with Andy Witlox and Cr Child. Councillors Samantha Dunn, Len Cox and Noel Cliff were vocal in support of the proposal, noting that both groups wanted the same outcome.

CYCLISTS and an environmental group struck a deal last week to build a new mountainbike trail in the Mount Evelyn Aqueduct Reserve. A Yarra Ranges councillor, however, criticised the cyclists group for ‘caving’ in on their original proposals. Representatives of the Yarra Ranges Mountainbikers (YRMTB) and Friends of Mount Evelyn Aqueduct (FoMEA) announced at the 22 July Yarra Ranges Council meeting that they had come to an understanding. The two groups had been at odds over a proposal to re-open closed trails through Mount Evelyn Aqueduct Reserve, which YRMTB originally supported and FoMEA opposed. But, after a meeting with the groups and council, both representatives said they supported one of the options, which would see a mountain bike track developed along the main aqueduct trail and possibly into the aqueduct itself. The council report described the option as giving both groups what they want - FoMEA protecting the environmentally significant upper and lower trails, YRMTB having interesting and challenging cycling facilities in the area. YRMTB vice-president John Wright said the decision to compromise was made for the sake of the group’s reputation. “We want to be seen to be working with land managers and community groups, rather than riding roughshod over everyone, he said. He said that he hoped the Mount Evelyn Aqueduct Reserve could be used as a case study when the group advocated for more mountain biking facilities in the municipality. FoMEA member Gwenda Donaldson said the result was a sensible one, and that both sides had compromised for the best outcome. Ward councillor Maria McCarthy said that she was happy with the result of the meeting and the conversations between the groups.

Veterans can now march with pride

Briefly Bus crush AN infringement notice was issued to a tourist bus driver after one of his passengers was pinned between the bus and a parked car on Sunday. Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the incident. Olinda CFA captain Steve Walker said the victim, a 47-year-old man was helping direct the driver do a u-turn after the bus became stuck. “As he reversed back, his passenger was squashed between a parked car and the side of the bus,” Capt Walker said. “He had a sore hip and arm.” Belgrave Sergeant Mick Hall said police were called to the incident not long before 11.30am.

Chemist cased MOUNT EVELYN police have asked members of the public to report suspicious behaviour in the main street of the town after an attempted burglary on the local chemist last week. Sergeant Craig Keithley said an unknown Caucasian male attempted to force entry to the chemist not long before 3.30am on Wednesday 23 July. While he smashed a window, he didn’t enter the building. The man was wearing a red hoodie and purple shorts. Sgt Keithley said community members who saw suspicious behaviour at any time of the day should contact police.

Thieves take fuel, plates FUEL and number plates have been stolen from cars throughout the Yarra Ranges. Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that car owners should keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour and where possible park their cars securely.

CHEAPEST FLOORING/DECKING called. He said the rejection led veterans to form the VVAA in 1979 with the slogan ‘Honour the dead but fight like hell for the living’. “The VVAA was formed out of adversity because no one else wanted to know us,” Mr Binnoore said. The remembrance ceremony will begin with an assembly at 10.30am

followed by a service at 11am. Recent former Deputy Commissioner of Veteran Affairs Mike O’Meara will be speaking at the commemorative event while Mr Binnore will recite The Ode of Remembrance. From there, servicemen and local supporters will march through to the

Mount Evelyn RSL club. The outer-eastern branch of the VVAA has more than 330 members and is one of the largest groups in Victoria. For more information about Mount Evelyn service, contact Roger Boness on 9737 0830.

Cooking with passion, and for jobs By REBECCA BILLS THEY are passionate about cooking up a storm and creating job opportunities for every member in the community. And the Mount Evelyn locals working at The Able Bake House will soon be able to update their kitchen equipment and uniforms, thanks to a $4000 grant from the Endeavour Foundation Endowment Challenge Fund. Melba Support Services was one of three recipients of the 2014 Non-Profit Organisation Awards from the foundation. Melba Support Services CEO Glenn Foard said social enterprises were aimed at providing real em-

ployment opportunities for people of all abilities and their model was based around the principle of people first, profit second. Endeavour Foundation Endowment Challenge Fund Chairperson Grant Murdoch said the organisation was proud to grant Melba Support Services the award. “Like The Able Bake House, Endeavour Foundation strongly believes in the benefits of supported employment,” Mr Murdoch said. “We know that having a job is a vital source of financial independence, self-esteem and a sense of purpose for all people including those with a disability.

“In addition to individual benefits, we know there is strong economic value to employing people with a disability.” Thrilled by the awards, The Able Bake House manager Kerry Kift said the funding would go towards updating some essential kitchen equipment so they could keep up with the current demand of their products as well as a uniform for each worker. She said the grant would assist in the organisation’s vision, to have a society that valued the individuality and rights of all people and the mission to have individuals with disabilities leading everyday lives. “The Able Bake House is for

anyone in the community and it really is great for community networking for people that are isolated for various reasons or find it hard to get involved,” she said. “It is inclusive of all, nobody is excluded with each person’s strengths and abilities used in various roles throughout the organisation, from baking to spending time on the local farms picking and sourcing the produce. The Endeavour Foundation Endowment Challenge Fund is a public benevolent institution that seeks to benefit the wider Australian disability sector as a whole, with an emphasis on people with an intellectual disability.

THE acting president of a local Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia (VVAA) branch will stride proudly alongside other ex-servicemen and women in the coming commemorative march in Mount Evelyn. Amat Binnore, BEM, from the VVAA’s Outer Eastern Melbourne branch, said the march, which will start at the Mount Evelyn Memorial Gardens on 17 August, is about letting veterans know that support is available. “A lot of veterans want to be by themselves - that’s OK, it’s their choice. “But we found that in the last 10 years, we have managed to bring a lot of guys out of the hills to be a part of the association and get support. “It’s about talking to someone who speaks the same language as you,” he said. Mr Binnore said the Vietnam War was very political, being marked with civil disturbances and a change of government. He said that he and other veterans weren’t received as heroes when they returned home and that there was very little support. “When servicemen came home, they were not looked upon well by the public. Guys tried to join the RSL, but they didn’t want to know them. “Myself and many colleagues were looked down upon,” he re-

trauma and future disadvantage. In response to the findings of the 2010 Protecting Victoria’s Vulnerable Children Inquiry, the Coalition Government has launched the new Vulnerable Children Action Plan. For the first time there is now a whole of government strategy to en-

sure we act earlier when children are vulnerable, intervene to prevent abuse and neglect and improve the lives of children in statutory care. Better co-ordination and integration will improve families’ access to important services like maternal and child health care and early childhood education. Stronger partnerships across all agencies and targeting programs and services will support and engage vulnerable young people including those in foster care and residential care. The action plan also focuses on keeping vulnerable young people engaged in education and training. Enabling young people to under-

take further education and training and giving them the skills and confidence they need to secure work can be a powerful means of breaking the cycle of disadvantage. Locally a new trial is being conducted in Yarra Ranges to streamline antenatal and early years services to ensure children and families benefit from seamless care. The Streamlining antenatal-4 services project is led by DEECD and involves both DHS and the Department of Health. The project consists of two parts. Part one of the project, finalised in spring this year aimed to collect data on the efficiency of current services,

STRONG communities such as ours value and cherish our most precious resource, our children. We strive to nurture, protect and encourage each one to achieve their potential. However for some, this is not always the reality. How we look after our vulnerable children has been a cause of concern for many in our community including myself. We have all recognised that the Victorian community needed to find new ways to safeguard the interests and futures of children and young people who were likely to continue to face danger,

to identify gaps and overlaps in these services and to identify the evidence behind streamlining these services. Local government is an important player in streamlining as we all work together to improve the lives and futures of our vulnerable young children. Teachers and allied health professionals can often be the first to recognise vulnerability and trauma that a young person may be suffering. Extra training and resources will support our highly skilled and talented professionals here in the Yarra Valley who are committed to providing supportive environments to our young people.

Let’s talk about changes to aged care. Aged care should be decided by the person who knows you best – you. That’s why aged care changes from 1 July 2014 give you more choice, more control and more of the services you might need to help you stay independent. New financing arrangements also start. So if you’re getting older and need help, or if you’re caring for someone who does, call My Aged Care or visit the website to find out what you need to know to start planning and talking about aged care with your family and loved ones.

Because the sooner we all start talking about aged care and planning it, the beter the outcome for you and your family.

Homecoming culture shock for princess By REBECCA BILLS IT’S every young girl’s dream to be a Disney heroine. And for Mount Evelyn resident Stephanie Wagner this is her reality. After graduating from Monash University with a performing arts degree, Stephanie started work for Disney at the Tokyo Disney Resort in 2010. “At first, I was just so excited to have a full-time acting job - it’s very uncommon for any performer,” she said. “Once I began, I started to learn about the inspiring history of the company and Walt Disney himself. “The slogan at Tokyo Disney Resort is ‘Where Dreams Come True’ and it’s no lie every day we perform for around 20,000 to 30,000 people and meet so many beautiful children and adults who love Disney, too.” Then the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake struck. “I was performing on stage when the earthquake occurred,” she said. “As scary as it was, Disneyland was one of the safest places to be as the park was built to withstand earthquakes as they are so common in Japan.” Stephanie said she had no water, plumbing or gas because there were rolling blackouts to try to conserve energy. Many people left Japan because they didn’t feel safe with the continued aftershocks and the situation with the nuclear power plant in Fukushima. “I chose to stay in the hope that we could get back to work and resume normal life as quickly as possible,” she said. “We thought the best way we could contribute was providing a place where people could escape for a day and rediscover some happiness and joy however the Disney Parks remained closed for a prolonged period of time and I was sent home to Australia.” The 26-year-old said three years on the country is looking more beautiful than ever. Stephanie said she finds travelling between Mount Evelyn and Japan can be a bit of a culture shock for her. “I live in a small studio apartment by Tokyo Bay in the same building as all the other foreign performers,” she said. “Tokyo is a busy city, the people are incredibly polite and friendly and it’s one of the safest places in the world. “However, I am always being stared at because I look so different to everyone else. “When I arrive back in Australia, I’m constantly reminding myself not to bow at people and to say thank-you instead of arigato.” Stephanie grew up in Ringwood and her parents moved to Mount Evelyn a few years ago. “The first thing I do when I get home from the airport is go to the Mount Evelyn Bakery and get a meat pie - small things like that make me feel at home,” she said. “As I’m usually home for short amounts of

Crossings set to close By JESSE GRAHAM

UNDER-USED school crossings face the chop under a Yarra Ranges Council review announced last week. However councillors said at their 22 July meeting that children’s safety would remain paramount and there would need to be strong reasons to close a crossing The type of road, the number of passing vehicles and pedestrians using the crossings will all be considered as part of the review, which is about “ensuring efficiencies” in costs. At the meeting, councillor Len Cox said he was hesitant about the review and said he would want to see some strong arguments before any school crossings were closed.

“Crossings are there for a very good reason - to protect our children,” he said. “I’m happy for this to go through, but I certainly suggest we need to be very careful about closing down school crossings that are being used.” Cr Cox’s sentiments were echoed by a number of councillors who said they would need to see evidence that crossings weren’t being used before they supported a closure. Mayor Fiona McAllister said that, with a fatality and a serious injury occurring at a school crossing in Healesville in recent years, she would also need to see strong evidence before approving any closures. However, the council has since said it will not compromise on pedestrian safety and

that crossing supervisors, communities and stakeholders will be consulted through the review. Yarra Ranges Deputy Mayor Maria McCarthy said after the meeting that school crossings programs are partly funded by VicRoads, and funding is determined by the number of pedestrians using them. Cr McCarthy said the review will identify crossings that no longer meet funding requirements and that new crossings could be added if the demand is identified. “Council is looking forward to seeing the outcomes of the review, before determining a way forward,” she said. For more information on the review, call Yarra Ranges Council on 1300 368 333.

The worth of water awards

Stephanie Wagner as Snow White. Pictures: CONTRIBUTED time, it’s a chance to spend time with family and friends just to relax. “I’m always sending my friends overseas pictures of the bush and kangaroos when I walk the Lilydale to Warburton Trail because they can’t believe this is what Australia actually looks like.” Now Stephanie is focusing all her energy on obtaining a O1 Entertainers Visa so she can pursue her acting dream in Hollywood later this year. “I’ve spent the last few months collating every piece of evidence I have on my training, jobs, and all the people I have worked with to prove to the US Government that I am what they call an ‘artist of extraordinary ability’,” she said. “It’s a difficult process, but the end result will make it all worth the effort. “Once I settle in I’ll look for an agent and manager and start auditioning for everything I can - I’ll also resume classes at my favourite acting school, The Acting Centre LA.”

SOUTHERN Rural Water and Melbourne Water are looking for Yarra Valley entries for the 2014 Rural Water Awards. The awards seek to recognise rural water licence holders who are doing clever things with water on their properties to improve water savings or productivity. The four award categories include groundwater users,

surface water users (rivers or dams), community or education groups and irrigation district water users. In the Yarra Valley, Melbourne Water manages surface water licences, and Southern Rural Water manages groundwater licences. Regional category winners will receive $500 in cash and will go in the running to win the state award of $2000 in cash for

their respective category. Finalists and category winners will be recognised at a gala luncheon to be held in Melbourne later in the year. Entries for the awards close at 4pm on 31 August 2014. To download your nomination form please visit vicwater. org.au or contact April Jenkins, project co-ordinator on (03) 9639 8868.

Pages from the past

Never forgotten FROM that day on, day and night you shall not be forgotten, for souls were lost and hearts were broken. Sorry for the kids that saw the sight before them as their hearts jumped out of their mouths. They stared frozen in horror as bodies were falling out of the sky. That image from that day will live in their heads for the rest of their lives. Dedicated to all the passengers aboard the plane that had been shot down. J’Den Ellery, Grade 5, Healesville Primary School.

Motions come out THE Save Healesville Hospital Action Group has been asked to share with the community the three motions referred to (Mail, page one, ‘Strong Medicine’ 22 July). Three motions were passed unanimously. 1. That we the community call on the Minister of Health to release the data now so the independent community funded business case can be completed. 2.That we the community call on Eastern Health to release the plans for the redevelopment to the general public seeking input and feedback within a month, at an agreed venue and that the community views are clearly included in the final plans. 3. That we the community call on all candidates in the upcoming state election for their support in completing the business case and then implementing the recommendations of the business case should they be elected. A further motion from the floor was that all parties acknowledge that SHHAG is the legitimate voice of community and acts for the community. This too was passed unanimously by the 150 in attendance on a wet, cold winter’s night. We were directed to write to the Minister to express our concern about the treatment of the GPs and demand the release of the data and the refurbishment plans. We have asked that questions be asked in parliament about the refusal to release the data to complete the Independent Alternative Business Case which includes a range of options and governance models. A detailed written request for financial and activity data has been requested in writing multiple times. To date it is disappointing to have to report that not one of our many letters to the Minister

David Davis has received a written acknowledgement, let alone a response to the content. We have written again as requested by our community. I hope we have good news to report soon. Let your voice be heard. A petition to be presented to parliament by Cindy McLeish will be circulating soon. We are awaiting her advice on the format required. Jane Judd, Acting Chair, Save Healesville Hospital Action Group.

Unhealthy environment I AM very concerned with the comments from Eastern Health CEO, Mr Alan Lilly as reported (Mail, 22 July). Mr Lilly’s assertions that he was unaware of any problems at the clinic until contacted by the Mail, makes me wonder who is acting for EH in dealing with the staff, that has resulted in the departure of two doctors and two top-level administration staff. Michele Goding’s comment that the clinic is “staffed appropriately” makes me wonder what is “appropriate” and Mr Lilly’s comment that the clinic was providing well and truly beyond what a community health service should provide. I wonder what part of “community” Mr Lilly doesn’t understand. This would seem to indicate that EH is not familiar with, or listening to this “rural community”. There is a greater interaction, social connection and sense of belonging between our hospital staff, mostly local and this community, than is found in large suburban hospitals. The assertions of staff harassment are totally unacceptable in the workplace and must be independently investigated and the necessary action taken. An internal investigation by their employer may not uncover the underlying problems due to staff being intimidated by their employer. Should not the Minister of Health David Davis be taking an interest in the accusations of bullying and harassment of hospital and medical staff by the EH bureaucracy as a part of his ministerial responsibility. A healthy and happy workplace leads to better outcomes for patients and staff. Arthur Harford, Healesville Action Group.

Warburton Mail July 24 1964 Opening of the New Gospel Chapel ON Friday night and Saturday morning, there was much activity at the new Gospel Chapel in Yarra Junction as final touches were made to the building in preparation for the official opening on Saturday afternoon. A large crowd arrived for the opening and the police were kept busy directing the many cars that brought people from distant places such as Melbourne, Warragul, Nambrok, Frankston, Dandenong and other localities.

Benwrrin Now a Church Centre ‘ENJOY a holiday and aid a missionary’ is the motto of the committee running the new Benwrrin Inter-denominational Centre at Yarra Junction. The former guest house was previously managed for 13 years by Mr and Mrs H.W. McDonald and family who have moved to a farm in Lowes Road. Jeanette and Karen McDonald will be managing the centre which will cater for private guest house parties and social functions as from 3 August.

Milkman Spots Early Morning Fire THE alertness of an early morning milkman at Warburton on Monday prevented what could have been a disastrous fire at the home of Mr and Mrs Alan Story next door to the Alpine Retreat Hotel. The milkman, Mr Ted Noy, saw the fire burning from the opposite side of the river just after 3am and decided to investigate even though he first thought it was only a stump burning. The fact that it was raining fairly heavily at the time aroused his suspicions that something was wrong. Both Warburton fire brigades and the SEC were quick to answer the fire siren.

Round Up TWO parlour coaches slid off the edge of Donna Buang Road between Cement Creek and the turntable. The buses, carrying a total of 66 passengers, came to a rest on a perilous angle. DISTRICT Billiards Association - A pleasant evening was spent in the Healesville Mechanics’ Institute when the Dr Phillips Shield and cups were presented to the local institute team which won the premiership in the Lilydale District Association. The winner of the Mechanics’ Institute Centenary tournament (Mr A. Newton) was presented with an eight-day clock and the runner-up (Mr W.P. Douglas) with a handsome vase. In the consolation tournament the winner (Mr. G. Becker) received an order for one pound and the runnerup (Dr S.H. Phillips) a fountain pen.

Friend of the Aborigines BILLY Russell, one of the well-known residents at the Coranderrk settlement at Healesville, has received the following letter from Mrs Annie F. Bon, whose interest is well-known. ‘It gave me very great pleasure to meet you in the shire hall, Healesville, at the unveiling of Barak’s Memorial. It was very thoughtful of the president to give you an invitation and kind of him to bring you to speak to me, for owing to failing sight it is very difficult for me to recognise people even if they are very near to me. I should have loved to have had a long talk with you but time did not permit and I write to show you that I do not forget you.’

Tourist Mountain Roads A GRANT of 20,000 pounds from underemployment relief funds to the Public Works Department was approved by Cabinet on Monday for the construction of tourist mountain roads in the Grampians, Warburton, Narbethong, Mt Buller and Wilson’s Promontory districts. Work will be provided for a large number of men for several months. Cabinet had decided to introduce legislation this session to establish the toll gate system on these roads so that they could be maintained and improved from time to time. Last year the government granted a substantial amount from relief funds for a similar purpose and one of the roads then dealt with was that to Mt Donna Buang, which has become popular as a winter sports resort.

Late authority on Aussie birds OBITUARY Kenneth Nigel Graham Simpson 1938 - 2014 A GOLDEN whistler seen at a railway station when he was a schoolboy first drew Ken Simpson’s attention to the beauty of Australian birds. He was already an enthusiastic student of the natural world, but that golden bird set him on a journey which would eventually lead to eight editions of the well-known Simpson and Day ‘Field Guide to the Birds of Australia’, and a lifetime of travelling, lecturing and writing about birds and their habitats. Ken was educated at University High School, the University of Melbourne and the ANU Canberra. He worked for a variety of institutions including the Austin Hospital, the School of Geology, University of Melbourne, and CSIRO Division of Wildlife Research. In 1965-66, Ken was part of a CSIRO scientific expedition to Macquarie Island, where he grew very fond of the wekas, brown flightless birds that have a feisty and inquisitive personality. He once built a short flight of steps to the door of a hut, using a mixture which included stale flour. The steps were promptly eaten by the wekas. Ken’s official duties included the study and photography of royal penguins and the four species of albatross at the island. His interest in seabirds later led to the 1972 publication

of his first book ‘Birds in Bass Strait’, which contained glimpses of his wellknown sense of humour dotted among the factual descriptions. In his final years, he returned again to seabirds, making contact with wildlife carers all along the south coast as he collected records of crested penguins, rare visitors to Australian waters. From 1967-70, the National Museum of Victoria employed Ken as a Field Officer engaged in Aboriginal archaeology, vertebrate fossil excavation and wildlife surveys along the Murray River between Robinvale and Renmark (in the area of the proposed but never built Chowilla Dam). In 1970, Ken moved to Monash University Zoology Department, working on vertebrate fossil material (mostly fish and marsupials) in south-east Australia. In 1974, Monash awarded him an honorary Master of Science, based on his publications and public lecturing. His final position before retirement in 1992 was as lecturer in geology, ecology and practical environmental science to primary teachers at Deakin University. Teaching people about natural history was Ken’s passion. In one year, he gave 30 talks to bird lovers, conservation groups, Country Women’s Association, Rotary, Scouts, Parks technical staff, and “anyone who would listen”. He had joined RAOU (now Birdlife Australia) in 1958, the Royal Society of Victoria in 1967, and supported many other regional bird and field naturalist groups. Over the years he published hundreds of short wildlife observations, describing his life’s work

as “research and reporting of natural history, especially palaeontology and ornithology”. For 12 years he served on a Victorian Evaluation Panel of the Australian Heritage Commission. In 1996 he was awarded the Australian Natural History Medallion “for furthering interest and knowledge in Australian Natural History”. Ken moved to the Yarra Valley in the early ’90s, an area already familiar to him through excursions of the Bird Observers Club, which he had joined in 1951, at the age of 13. In the 1960s, Ken worked with the Swift Survey, spending many hours counting the swifts that flew over the Don Gap, and in later years he never failed to search the sky for the storm clouds which might herald their arrival. An enthusiast like Ken never really retired. In 1998 he co-authored with Zoe Wilson a book intended for beginners, ‘Birdwatching in Australia and New Zealand’. He continually revised his Field Guide in the light of new research and the final (eighth) edition was published in 2010. He was a strong supporter of the Yarra Junction Library and could often be found there, surrounded by papers and books, but always willing to chat about the local birdlife. He continued to lead bird walks along the Warburton Trail and around the Yarra Valley until his health failed him. Ken passed away on 9 July 2014, survived by his brother Peter, his four daughters Catherine, Joanne, Helen and Elizabeth, and his long-time partner, Zoe.

Senior’s horror off-road crash By KATH GANNWAY AN 81-YEAR-OLD Yarra Glen woman has survived an astounding crash on the Yarra Glen-Healesville Road at Tarrawarra around 3.45pm on Friday. The woman lost control of the vehicle on a bend, went over the embankment, taking out a huge tree stump on the way through, before hitting a lamp post and bouncing back against a fence. The woman was still conscious as SES volunteers and paramedics removed her from the car and, with the help of CFA volunteers, stretchered her up the steep embankment to an ambulance. Leading Senior Constable Gra-

ham Ruse of Yarra Ranges Traffic Control said the car did a full 360 degree spin as it left the road. Leading Sen Const Rust said Healesville police were investigating the crash and would be including the age of the woman as a possible contributing factor in trying to establish the circumstances. “There could be any number of reasons in a situation where you have the driver going down a hill into a left-hand bend, hit the brakes, and unless you have traction control and can drive through with the braking, the force is going to push you straight ahead, and in this case, off the edge,” he said. The woman was taken to Maroondah Hospital.

Winter jump starts WINTER isn’t just the time for sickness, scarves and hail - it’s also the time of the year that car batteries are most likely to go flat. According to Budget Direct Roadside Assistance, over the last six years, 48 per cent of calls made to the company in winter were for flat batteries. Callouts for flat batteries increased by 26 per cent on average throughout autumn and winter, according to the six years of data, released on 16 July. According to Battery Council International, a fully-charged battery has 100 per cent of its power available in 27 degree temperature, but only two thirds power available when temperatures reach freezing point. During winter, oils can thicken in the cold weather, so batteries need to work harder to keep a car going. A Budget Direct representative said that parking a car inside a garage can help to prevent a battery from going flat, or not working in cold weather. They said a survey conducted last year with 1436 people showed that 47 per cent of respondents didn’t feel comfortable jump-starting their own car, while 66 per cent of respondents would call for assistance. Only 13 per cent of respondents said they would try to fix the problem themselves. To jump-start a car, first ensure that the car with a flat battery is turned off, with its headlights off. Using either a portable power pack or another car, use jumper leads to connect the red lead to the positive battery terminal on the flat battery and the black cord to the negative terminal of the good battery. The other end of the black cord should be attached to a metal earthing point, such as a bolt or bracket, away from the battery. Turn on the working car or power pack, and try starting the car with a flat battery after around two minutes. If the car turns on, remove the leads in the opposite order, and drive for around 30 minutes to charge the battery.

Police officers use an automated number plate recognition camera to instantly see if a car is unregistered. 124618

Rego fines are rising By JESSE GRAHAM POLICE have warned drivers to be wary of unregistered driving, with fines rising earlier this month and potential impacts on TAC claims. As of 1 July, the penalty for driving unregistered rose to $738, but Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable Graeme Rust said that not paying rego fees could have more drastic impacts. “If you’re involved in an accident and you forgot the pay the rego, that’s where you can have a big issue,” Leading Sen Const Rust said. “They (the Traffic Accident Com-

mission) may refuse to approve your claim,” he said. The TAC pays compensation to people injured, or families of a person killed in accidents on Victorian roads, or interstate if the person is a Victorian resident. A Traffic Accident Charge is part of the registration renewal that VicRoads sends, and provides insurance if the vehicle’s owner is involved in a crash. However, benefits for loss-of-earnings aren’t available to the owner of an unregistered vehicle if they’re the driver or passenger in the car in an accident. Owners of unregistered cars on

private land are also exempt from benefits if they are involved in an accident with the car, whether they are a driver, passenger or pedestrian. “The TAC component ... doesn’t come into play because the car is unregistered,” Leading Sen Const Rust said. “Your private insurance could also lapse because one of the conditions is that your private insurance provider usually requires the car to be currently registered,” he said. With unregistered driving fines totalling about the same amount as an annual registration fee, Leading Sen Const Rust said that vehicle owners

should just pay their rego when it is due. He said the onus is on drivers to ensure their car has current registration, and to ensure that VicRoads is notified as soon as the owner has changed their address. “The onus is on the owner to ensure that their vehicle is registered and roadworthy,” he said. “If you’re driving unregistered, you’re liable for a penalty.” For more information on TAC eligibility, visit www.tac.vic.gov.au, and for more information on vehicle registration, visit www.vicroads.vic.gov.au.

Victoria’s paramedics are highly skilled professionals who dedicate their lives to serving the community and helping out in tough times. Ambulance Victoria and Victorian Government representatives have been negotiating with the ambulance union over a new pay deal for paramedics since August 2012. To break the deadlock, the Victorian Government has agreed with Ambulance Victoria to make a new pay offer to paramedics.

Tuesday, 29 July, 2014 Page 9

This new offer is fair and reasonable. It includes: • a sign-on payment of $3000 for full-time paramedics (pro rata for part-timers and new employees) – this is twice as much as the previous offer • an immediate 6% wage increase • an increase of 3% in July 2015 and a further 3% in July 2016 – a 12% increase in total. Paramedics may also receive pay increases arising from the Fair Work Commission’s arbitration of their work value claim. Paramedics existing terms and conditions will be retained, so that they continue to receive: • 10 weeks paid leave annually • 10 weeks paid parental leave • 6 months long service leave after 15 years service • tax exempt benefits of up to $9000 a year. Victorian paramedics will still be the only paramedics in Australia to have access to guaranteed superannuation benefits via a defined benefit superannuation scheme, including a lump-sum option after 30 years of service. These increases will mean an ALS Year 6 paramedic can receive a total package of more than $110,000 a year (including rolled-in-rate, built-in overtime, FBT exempt benefits and guaranteed superannuation benefits – but not additional overtime). In addition, paramedics will receive the $3,000 sign-on payment. The Victorian Government is continuing to invest in ambulance services, with funding provided for an additional 539 full-time equivalent ambulance officers. This new pay offer gives paramedics the salary increase they deserve, maintains the generous terms and conditions they enjoy today and recognises the importance of the job they do protecting and saving lives.

Sense of self out of place of chaos By ANEEKA SIMONIS THE Basin Theatre Group is ready to wow audiences with a former Broadway production set to grace its stage. The Other Place, written by American playwright Sharr White, is a tale about relationships, chaos, loss and human resolve which made its successful debut at the renowned theatre in 2011. The main character is a middle-aged woman with a highly successful career as a scientist but her life comes crashing down as things start to go awry. Director Barry O’Neill said the storyline absorbs audience members, forcing them to relate and question how they would work through sim-

ilar situations in their lives. “It makes audience think what happens when you are at the top of your profession and things go wrong,” he said. Of the play, White said the script plants difficult ideas about family life and understanding one’s sense of self. “It’s about the smartest woman on earth who discovers nothing she knows is true,” he said. The Basin’s production company is the first Australian non-professional group to premiere the 70-minute dramatic piece. It makes up the third season for The Basin Theatre Production’s 60th anniversary, following the Quartet and The Diary of Anne Frank which

ran earlier this year. The cast and crew have been rehearsing for the past six weeks ahead of their debut on 15 August. The season will run from 15 August to 6 September with matinees on 17, 21 and 24 of August. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for members and $20 for people who book in groups of 10 or more. Audiences will be provided with light refreshments throughout the production as well as get the opportunity to meet with the cast after the show. To book, go to www.thebasintheatre.org.au or make a phone booking between 7pm and 9pm on 1300 784 668.

Consummate flop Sex Tape Starring: Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper Rated MA15+ for strong sex scenes, sexual references, coarse language and drug use SEX Tape is one big, throbbing empty void of a comedy. Married couple Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) decide to film a sex-tape after a long dry spell, but Jay accidentally uploads their sextape to the Cloud, where all their friends and family risk seeing it. Sex Tape somehow both underestimates and overestimates its audience.

the physical. The laboured humour is too tame for the cheeky premise and the shallow dialogue is irritating. Much of the run-time is also a contrived fetch quest with huge plot-holes from all the technology misunderstandings as Jay and Annie race to contain the sex-tape leak. I’m no prude, but Sex Tape is glaringly superficial, dumb and corny. If you stayed home and made your own kinky video, it would probably be a lot more entertaining and worthwhile than this film. - SETH HYNES

HEALING LAST WEEKS

WHEN the Artrageous Painters of Warburton decided it was time to launch their biggest ever exhibition, they went into it with an “anything is pozible’ attitude. Speaking on behalf of the group, which has painted together for about 10 years, Kate Collins said The Upper Yarra Valley Art Show will be open to all artists and there is an opportunity for everyone to be involved. The group went live on the crowdfunding site Pozible with the aim of raising $4000 and with 29 days to go on Friday they were well on their way with $1343 pledged. The cut-off time is 4.06pm on 23 August. The show will be held in a beautiful space at the Alpine Hotel from 3 to 12 October. It will take in two weekends including the Upper Yarra Garden Club’s Open Garden weekend which attracts huge crowds to the district. The funds will be used to promote the event and for practical items such as a hanging system for the various rooms, screens and prize money.

Artrageous artists Kate Collins, Chris Dimmock, Sue Slusarek and, painting, Penny Murphy, are engaging new technology to promote traditional art. 124537 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY For those who donate money there are rewards such as original art cards, original paintings, even a portrait of a chosen per-

son or pet. For more information, and to donate, visit Pozible.com/ project/182419.

Cultural connection collection DISCOVER the weird and wonderful at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum in August. Uncovered: The Yarra Ranges Collection, is a new, temporary exhibition that will connect residents to local stories and the history of the region through Yarra Ranges Regional Museum’s significant collection. The exhibition opens at Yarra Ranges Regional Museum on Saturday 2 August. The exhibition features previously unseen objects from the museum’s collection including weird, wonderful and important objects that make up Yarra

Ranges’ history. Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister said the exhibition will allow residents and visitors to experience and interact with the region’s history and stories to better understand its cultural identity. “I hope that when you come away from Uncovered, you’ve experienced something special. “The rich history of this area is being collected and presented, it is something all residents can feel proud of,” Cr McAllister said. Upstairs, visitors can step into the shoes of a museum

worker and learn how to collect, catalogue, preserve and display objects with items from the handling collection. “It’s not all about looking at objects,” Cr McAllister said. “You can interact with them, touch the handling collection and arrange it for yourself. Uncovered: The Yarra Ranges Collection will show at Yarra Ranges Regional Museum, 3537 Castella Street, Lilydale. The exhibition opens Saturday 2 August and runs to 2 November and entry is free.

Studies show that most married couples have a lot more sex than the film suggests. The film also assumes of its older audience an ignorance of technology that, in this hyperconnected world, largely isn’t the case any more. Fox control – Lake Eildon National Park, Rubicon State forest, Cathedral Range State Park, Marysville State forest, Yarra Ranges National Park and Toolangi State forest The Department of Environment and Primary Industries and Parks Victoria are committed to protecting and enhancing the natural values of parks, reserves and state forests across the state. Examples of this conservation management are the control of introduced plant and animal species which can impact on these values. As part of an ongoing strategy, the Department of Environment and Primary Industries is continuing to lay buried baits containing sodium luroacetate (1080 poison) on public land for the control of foxes. Baiting commenced Monday 13th January 2014 and will continue until Friday 19th December 2014. Baits have been laid at strategic sites and other known areas of fox habitat within the above mentioned forests and parks, and within the vicinity of townships Eildon, Rubicon, Taggerty, Buxton, Marysville, Narbethong, Healesville, Warburton and Toolangi. 1080 poison signs have been posted throughout the baited areas and members of the public who are living, visiting or working in the above named areas are advised to take particular care not to disturb or interfere with bait stations. Domestic dogs and cats are particularly susceptible to 1080 poison and should be under efective control, muzzled or kept away from the poisoned areas. Further details may be obtained by contacting Emily Borton at the Department of Environment and Primary Industries at Alexandra on (03) 5772 0200. www.depi.vic.gov.au Customer Service Centre 136 186

Four push for the front YVMDFNL Wrap 26 July WHAT another week of football and netball in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Community Bank Football Netball League. Division 1 has four teams sitting equal on top of the ladder - Wandin, Monbulk Upwey Tecoma and Olinda Ferny Creek. Division 2 has Seville one game clear of Yarra Glen but all that could change next week. Netball sees Upwey Tecoma one game clear of Wandin and Yarra Glen six points clear of Seville. The games next week have a lot riding on them as Wandin takes on Upwey Tecoma while Seville takes on Yarra Glen in both football and netball. SENIORS DIVISION 1 Healesville 11.9 (75) d Mount Evelyn 10.9 (69) This was an outstanding battle from start to finish with the lead never getting beyond six points for the majority of the game. The first quarter was goal for goal and Healesville held a narrow two-point advantage at the first break. The second long break saw a onegoal advantage.

The second at three quarter time were all tied and the scene was set for a great last quarter. There weren’t a lot of goals kicked in the last term but it was Healesville that kicked the critical goal that gave the team the all-important lead and it was able to hold on to it until the final siren to record a fantastic victory and put a dent in Mount Evelyn’s finals aspirations. Warburton Millgrove 10.16 (76) d Belgrave 3.10 (28) Warburton was terrific in its win over Belgrave holding its opponents to just one goal after quarter time. Warby held just a one-goal lead at the first change but it was all its game after that. They stretched that lead to 17 points at half time and then held Belgrave goalless in the second half to run away with the game and win by a resounding 48 points in what was a dominating display despite the low scoring. Upwey Tecoma 8.8 (56) d Woori Yallock 7.12 (54) This was the Grand Final replay from last season and this time the result was reversed as Upwey was able to hold on to win a great encounter that was in the balance throughout the four quarters.

State champions THE Yarra Ranges Athletics competed at the State Little Athletics Cross Country Championships held on a tough course at Bundoora Park on Saturday. Twenty-six club athletes took the opportunity to compete against the best athletes in the state with outstanding results from all of them. A sensational 5th place at the World Junior Athletics Championships by past club athlete Zak Patterson was the final piece of motivation required to bring out the competitive spirit in our future athletics stars. The highlight of the day was the third place team medal for our Under 15 girl’s team of Molly

Dixon, Amy Veenendaal and Tammarah Brown. This event will be the last event the girls can compete in as little athletes, a team medal was a fitting reward for their efforts over the past few years. Other medals went to Kiara Flavel (1st U8 Girls), Madeline Laven (3rd U9 Girls), Georgia Laven (1st U11 Girls), Lily Peacock (2nd U12 Girls), James Laven (2nd U14 Boys) and our U13 Girls team of Lily Thompson, Lee Taylor and Rickylee Brown (3rd). Well done also to the other competing athletes. The club is extremely proud of all its members and their efforts throughout the

Scoreboard

day both in competing and supporting. Many of the fields had over 60 competitors making competition very tough. Next week is the club Cross Country Championships at Morrison’s Reserve, Mount Evelyn. Events kick off at 8.45am for what is sure to be a great morning of cross country. Everyone is welcome, all you need is your runners, the barbecue will be on, too. Go to www.yarrarangesathletics.org.au for more information on upcoming events, especially the Cockatoo Hills Challenge, and full results from the weekend.

Under 15 placegetters Molly, Tammarah and Amy.

MARYSVILLE GOLF REPORT THE Thursday nine holers at Marysville played stroke on the back nine holes in cool but sunny conditions. The winner with nett 37 was Rob Richards who also won the nearest the pin on the 18th The Saturday competition for both the ladies and the men was a stableford game. The men’s winner was Berwick resident and member Brad Simpson. Brad (21) has recently returned from a holiday in Europe and the rest from golf seemed to do him no harm with an excellent score of 42 points. The runner up was Yewls Kuan (12) with 35 points on a countback from Steve Krueger a member from Mt Evelyn. The ladies winner was Heather Jenkins (26) with 35 points followed by Gail Leigh (11) with 31 points. The nearest the pins were won by Coldstream resident and member Sean Williams on the 18 who also won the Golden Shot, Yewls Kuan, Chris Burgess and Brendan Krueger. Next Saturday both the ladies and the men will play a Par round for the monthly medal. Members are looking forward to the immanent opening of the new Bunkers Restaurant at the club. Watch this space for further details. Roger Thomas was the runner-up with nett 38.
