EMERALD’S doctor shortage has driven a local GP to submit a request for legislative review. Emerald Medical Centre’s (EMC) Dr George Somers and Federal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood met with politicians in Canberra earlier this month to discuss the current restrictions on healthcare access. Currently, EMC has over 12,000 patients on their books, serviced by just eight, mostly part-time doctors, making the equivalent of five and a half full-time healthcare providers. If a council or shire’s ratio of doctors to patients roughly exceeds 1:1200, the Department of Health considers it an area of Doctor Workforce Shortage (DWS), enabling it to recruit overseas trained doctors. Despite almost doubling that figure, EMC is not considered a DWS area as it belongs to Cardinia Shire, a growth corridor with plenty of medical facilities and doctors in more densely populated suburbs such as Pakenham. Dr Somers said these areas skewed the data and the Department of Health needed to review Emerald independently of the shire. “While 15 per cent of EMC patients live in the southern part of Yarra Ranges Shire, the majority live in the northern part of Ranges Ward of Cardinia. “This area is geographically separated from the Cardinia growth corridor, 20 kilometres south, and is much more like the Yarra Ranges. “Access to doctors should not be denied to the practices in the northern part of Ranges Ward,” he said. CEO of Medicare Local’s South Eastern branch Anne Peek said the shortage was impacting on patients’ ability to access healthcare. “It affects patients’ access to have an available GP. There are clinics being overloaded with demand and they can’t cope with requirements,” she said. Dr Somers said employing more GPs would improve their ability to care for patients. “If we were a DWS area, we could attract more doctors, provide a broader range of services and operate after hours ... it’d also make it easier to keep up with immunisation,

preventative health and education services,” he said. Despite heavy advertising and financial incentives, Mr Wood said they had not been able to lure young, local doctors to the practice. “Local graduates aren’t willing to make the journey out to Emerald, so we need to find an alternate solution - again,” he said. Currently, one of the EMC’s female doctors is away on long service leave and despite two female overseas trained doctors expressing interest in the position, government restrictions prohibit it. “We just can’t offer (patients) the same access to after-hours service and female doctors,” he said. Assistant Minister for Health Fiona Nash said the government would look to review the classification system but any changes made needed to be made through legislation. Dr Somers’ submission would also request that Emerald’s zoning be changed from fringe metropolitan to rural. He said the government was looking to reintroduce an infrastructure grant for rural healthcare providers but despite living around 50 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD, the clinic was not eligible. “I would argue not many communities with around 15,000 people live over half an hour away from the nearest hospital with adequate healthcare support. “Our practice is more akin to a rural practice than a metropolitan practice. We have extensive resuscitation equipment, because our critical patients need to be stabilised at EMC prior to transfer to the distant hospitals in Dandenong, Ferntree Gully or Berwick,” he said. Dr Somers said EMC would use the potential grant to update the space, attract specialist staff and boost their education sector. “It would give us more room to have a broader team-based approach to primary health care (and) attract specialist GPs to Emerald.” Emerald has been considered a DWS area in the past, with five of its current eight doctors having been recruited from overseas countries during their eligibility, reviewed quarterly.

Victoria’s paramedics are highly skilled professionals who dedicate their lives to serving the community and helping out in tough times. Ambulance Victoria and Victorian Government representatives have been negotiating with the ambulance union over a new pay deal for paramedics since August 2012. To break the deadlock, the Victorian Government has agreed with Ambulance Victoria to make a new pay offer to paramedics.

Connecting people and communities RTM

This new offer is fair and reasonable. It includes: • a sign-on payment of $3000 for full-time paramedics (pro rata for part-timers and new employees) – this is twice as much as the previous offer • an immediate 6% wage increase • an increase of 3% in July 2015 and a further 3% in July 2016 – a 12% increase in total. Paramedics may also receive pay increases arising from the Fair Work Commission’s arbitration of their work value claim. Paramedics existing terms and conditions will be retained, so that they continue to receive: • 10 weeks paid leave annually • 10 weeks paid parental leave • 6 months long service leave after 15 years service • tax exempt benefits of up to $9000 a year. Victorian paramedics will still be the only paramedics in Australia to have access to guaranteed superannuation benefits via a defined benefit superannuation scheme, including a lump-sum option after 30 years of service. These increases will mean an ALS Year 6 paramedic can receive a total package of more than $110,000 a year (including rolled-in-rate, built-in overtime, FBT exempt benefits and guaranteed superannuation benefits – but not additional overtime). In addition, paramedics will receive the $3,000 sign-on payment. The Victorian Government is continuing to invest in ambulance services, with funding provided for an additional 539 full-time equivalent ambulance officers. This new pay offer gives paramedics the salary increase they deserve, maintains the generous terms and conditions they enjoy today and recognises the importance of the job they do protecting and saving lives.

Trail reveals Irish roots, begorrah! By RUSSELL BENNETT MANY Emerald residents are likely unaware that their town is named after the Irishmen who came to the area from the Emerald Isle following the gold rush of the late 1850s. It’s also doubtful they’d know that the Emerald Football Club’s original colours were green and gold - not the Bombers’ long famous red and black. The Emerald Heritage Walk was officially launched on Wednesday and has been designed to showcase some of the town’s existing heritage buildings while also providing a host of little-known facts about the town. Emerald is the oldest town in the Dandenong Ranges, with a history dating back to 1858. Those who go along for the new walk, which encompasses much of the town centre and business district, can meander through the local streets, purchase a coffee on the

way and see snapshots of where it all began. They can begin their journey at any location and finish at the Emerald and District Museum located within the historic Nobelius Heritage Park. The walk is a joint venture between the Emerald Community House, and Emerald Museum and Nobelius Heritage Park. Community House co-ordinator Lynne Trensky could barely contain her excitement at the launch of the walk which was held near the Commonwealth Bank branch on Kilvington Drive in front of more than 100 onlookers. “For our local community, this is just a wonderful way to embrace our history,” she said. “For tourism - wow! “I think this will put Emerald and the eastern Dandenong Ranges corridor on the map and it will encourage visitors to stay longer and in doing that to spend more across

the businesses throughout the township.” Brochures are available in the Emerald town centre - including outside the bank at the main information board for the walk. They detail significant moments in Emerald’s history and contain maps to find key buildings and locations throughout the town. Nobelius Heritage Park and Emerald Museum committee president Carey Williams said he was “overwhelmed” by Wednesday’s turnout, which included Gembrook MP Brad Battin, La Trobe MP Jason Wood, Cardinia Shire mayor Graeme Moore and Ranges Ward councillors Brett Owen, Leticia Wilmot and Tania Baxter. “The museum contains a great deal of significant historical material on the development of Emerald and its surrounding districts,” Mr Williams said. “The heritage walk is something that’s been on our agenda for some

time - we’ve spent many months working on this project in partnership with the Emerald Community House and it’s a great delight to us that it’s finally come to fruition.” In officially opening the walk, Cr Moore thanked Ms Trensky and her colleagues at the community house “for driving the project”. “This fits into our Healthy Together program,” he said. “The walk suits all different levels - all ages - and I think that’s a wonderful initiative on its own. “I’d like to see, across our shire, more of these heritage trails. “This is the first that I know of and I think it’s a great initiative for Cardinia Shire to have. “It has definitely put Emerald on the map and I’m looking forward to 2015 when the extension will be complete with the Anzac Walk just in time for the 100-year commemoration.”

MOUNT EVELYN police have asked members of the public to report suspicious behaviour in the main street of the town after an attempted burglary on the local chemist last week. Sergeant Craig Keithley said an unknown Caucasian male attempted to force entry to the chemist not long before 3.30am on Wednesday 23 July. While he smashed a window, he didn’t enter the building. The man was wearing a red hoodie and purple shorts. Sgt Keithley said community members who saw suspicious behaviour at any time of the day should contact police.

FIREFIGHTERS across the hills were celebrated for their hard work and treated to a lavish night at Mount Dandenong’s Skyhigh earlier this month. The restaurant was booked out for a special dinner for the Kalorama-Mount Dandenong, Olinda and Sassafras-Ferny Creek brigades on 11 July. The volunteer firefighters all enjoyed a three-course meal and drinks on the evening, which is designed as a thank-you to the brigades for their work protecting the community. Skyhigh owner John Connellan personally welcomed the firefighters on the night and said the dinner was symbolic of a Christmas dinner that the firefighters may miss due to their work. “I’ve always admired the work of the CFA - I’d liken their efforts to the Anzacs,” he said. “I think it’s just fantastic that, in this world of consumerism, one-up-manship and everything being about the dollar, that there are people in the community who are happy to give their time and their safety to help protect the community.” CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson attended on the evening and thanked each of the brigades for protecting the

LESS than 2000 nautical miles remain between former Belgrave rower Tim Spiteri and Africa, as a world-record ocean row enters its final stages. Mr Spiteri is currently on a carbon fibre boat, the Avalon, which departed from Western Australia on 11 June for a rowing journey to Africa. In a blog update on 23 June, Mr Spiteri reported that the five-person crew is less than 2000 nautical miles from its destination, with good weather forecast for the next week. “Everyone is in positive spirits despite fatigue and pain, but it’s being managed well,” he wrote. His trip, however, has not been without its pitfalls - fellow rower, Shane Usher, had to be rescued from the boat after receiving a severe hot water burn that left his hamstring exposed earlier this month. Mr Usher was rescued by the Nordic River, an ammonia transporter en route to Dampier, and has since posted that he is back in Melbourne and his burns are healing well. Currently, the five-person crew have two people rowing at any one time, with a third steering the vessel and the others resting in shifts. Mr Spiteri aims to raise $250,000 for MS Australia through the 8500 kilometre journey, which has never been completed. His mum, Belgrave’s Rhonda Spiteri, lives with multiple sclerosis, and said that she kept track of Tim’s row daily online. It’s all about the kids STRONG communities such as ours value and cherish our most precious resource, our children. We strive to nurture, protect and encourage each one to achieve their potential. However for some, this is not always the reality. How we look after our vulnerable children has been a cause of concern for many in our community including myself. We have all recognised that the Victorian community needed to find new ways to safeguard the interests and futures of children and young people who were likely to continue to face danger, trauma and future disadvantage. In response to the findings of the 2010 Protecting Victoria’s Vulnerable Children Inquiry, the Coalition Government has launched the new Vulnerable Children Action Plan.

The state T of

affairs Christine Fyffe MP

Member for Evelyn

For the first time there is now a whole of government strategy to ensure we act earlier when children are vulnerable, intervene to prevent abuse and neglect and improve the lives of children in statutory care. Better co-ordination and integration will improve families’ access to important services like maternal and child health care and early childhood education. Stronger partnerships across all agencies and targeting programs and

services will support and engage vulnerable young people including those in foster care and residential care. The action plan also focuses on keeping vulnerable young people engaged in education and training. Enabling young people to undertake further education and training and giving them the skills and confidence they need to secure work can be a powerful means of breaking the cycle of disadvantage. Locally a new trial is being conducted in Yarra Ranges to streamline antenatal and early years services to ensure children and families benefit from seamless care. The Streamlining antenatal-4 services project is led by DEECD and involves both DHS and the Department of Health. The project con-

sists of two parts. Part one of the project, finalised in spring this year aimed to collect data on the efficiency of current services, to identify gaps and overlaps in these services and to identify the evidence behind streamlining these services. Local government is an important player in streamlining as we all work together to improve the lives and futures of our vulnerable young children. Teachers and allied health professionals can often be the first to recognise vulnerability and trauma that a young person may be suffering. Extra training and resources will support our highly skilled and talented professionals here in the Yarra Valley who are committed to providing supportive environments to our young people.

Crossing closures planned By JESSE GRAHAM UNDER-USED school crossings face the chop under a Yarra Ranges Council review announced last week. However councillors said at their 22 July meeting that children’s safety would remain paramount and there would need to be strong reasons to close a crossing The type of road, the number of passing vehicles and pedestrians using the crossings will all be considered as part of the review, which is about “ensuring efficiencies” in costs. At the meeting, councillor Len Cox said he was hesitant about the review and said he would want to see some strong arguments before any school crossings were closed. “Crossings are there for a very good reason - to protect our children,” he said. “I’m happy for this to go through, but I certainly suggest we need to be very careful about closing down school crossings that are being used.” Cr Cox’s sentiments were echoed by a number of councillors who said they would need to see evidence that crossings

weren’t being used before they supported a closure. Mayor Fiona McAllister said that, with a fatality and a serious injury occurring at a school crossing in Healesville in recent years, she would also need to see strong evidence before approving any closures. However, the council has since said it will not compromise on pedestrian safety and that crossing supervisors, communities and stakeholders will be consulted through the review. Yarra Ranges Deputy Mayor Maria McCarthy said after the meeting that school crossings programs are partly funded by VicRoads, and funding is determined by the number of pedestrians using them. Cr McCarthy said the review will identify crossings that no longer meet funding requirements and that new crossings could be added if the demand is identified. “Council is looking forward to seeing the outcomes of the review, before determining a way forward,” she said. For more information on the review, call Yarra Ranges Council on 1300 368 333.

New twist on CFA truck BELGRAVE Heights and South Fire Brigade is getting ready to welcome an advanced new truck to its fleet. The first of its type, the rescue vehicle’s water pump spins four times faster than average trucks, pushing out more water at a greater pressure. The truck is also made to aid in off-road rescues, with the capacity to roll up to 30 degrees. The brigade’s First Lieutenant Aaron Carlton said the brigade was excited for the truck to join their fleet.

“Its off-road credentials are extremely good. It will be the most capable truck in the CFA fleet when we get it,” he said. The truck is a smaller design to allow for fast emergency response, but can hold up to six crew members and equipment. It is currently going through final engineering tests in Ballarat and is expected to be on the road in two weeks. Mr Carlton said it would join the brigade’s two other trucks and would mostly be used to fight fires during bushfire season.

The responses from Messrs Blood and Minahan reinforced another long-held thought; that having 750cc (or even 150cc) throbbing away between one’s legs does interfere with all logical thought and the ability to calmly analyse and rebut argument. Though in motorcycle safety terms size does matter. Both gentlemen suggest that a logical conclusion to my thoughts would be to ban cars. Rubbish: I went to great pains to use the term ‘substitutable utility’. Let’s expand that concept in simple words. There is no way we could ban cars, the leap to that inference shows poor analytical skills. The way our society is set up we cannot replace cars with any other form of transport. This is absolutely not the case for motorcycles, as cars are a much safer, easy alternative and, apart from lane-splitting, can do all and much more than a motorcycle can do on-road. Despite authority’s constant nagging and policing, we are nearing the point where the number of road deaths is increasingly difficult to reduce, and sadly, this number is a price society is willing to pay for the great social utility of individual mobility. I started driving when unrestricted speed was the rural norm, in cars with low-grip crossply tyres, no seatbelts, giant engines and drum brakes all round. (Bruce Springsteen got it right calling them “Suicide machines” in “Born to Run”. There were also no .05 rules and the highways were all only one lane each way, undivided and poor. We killed about 1000-plus people per year on the roads in Victoria at that time. Now with a doubling of population and a near quadrupling of vehicle ownership we kill less than 300, that is about a twelfth of the 1960 rate. We’ve done the easy things - seatbelts, 100 km/h limit, radial tyres, divided roads, .05 enforcement. There is now a lot more effort and expense - ABS, crumple zones etc - for a minimal reduction in deaths. So the authorities are casting about seeking solutions, some of which, for example the new cable barriers, are excellent for cars but tools of amputation for motorcyclists Banning motorcycles would give an instant reduction for very little disadvantage to more than 90 per cent of the population. That’s an observation, not a recommendation. And on Mr Blood’s suggestion that I get a bike and get the ‘wind in my face’, I did that in pre-helmet ‘wind in the hair’ days, but I do remember bugs up the nose, a punished perineum and temporary deafness. John Nieman, Monbulk.

What about ratepayers?

Let’s talk about changes to aged care. Aged care should be decided by the person who knows you best – you. That’s why aged care changes from 1 July 2014 give you more choice, more control and more of the services you might need to help you stay independent. New financing arrangements also start. So if you’re getting older and need help, or if you’re caring for someone who does, call My Aged Care or visit the website to find out what you need to know to start planning and talking about aged care with your family and loved ones.

Because the sooner we all start talking about aged care and planning it, the beter the outcome for you and your family. For personalised assistance, talk to a real person on 1800 200 422* or visit myagedcare.gov.au *1800 calls are free from land lines; calls from mobile phones may be charged.

Authorised by the Australian Government, Capital Hill, Canberra.

I READ with great disappointment the article (Mail, 8 July), concerning “Attempts to cut rates fails”. Bravo to Councillors Witlox and Cox for standing up for the ratepayers, I feel very let down by the rest. What happened to “due process” with this budget? June 5 was the closing date for comments on the budget, yet clearly from the (other) councillors’ statements this was already far too late to do anything about it, how hypocritical is that, why bother asking? Jim Child particularly was voted in based on his business background and his strong criticism of council’s spending, prior to his election. Surely any business (or home) requires that the budget (as in “allowance to spend”) is set, prior to determining how to spend it, not vice versa. So if the councillors had set the budget at “last year’s plus CPI”, then that’s the number that the council works within, not “what do we want to do this year chaps?” then find the money (from the ratepayers) to fund this extravagance. Then to add insult, Terry Avery’s comment “we must stick to the plan” including the ongoing rate rises of double CPI - when/how do ratepayers get to stick to a plan that allows us to pay for all these extravagances, Terry? Thanks for listening J, cheers, Alan Jennings, Mount Dandenong.

Cultural connection with the weird and wonderful DISCOVER the weird and wonderful at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum in August. Uncovered: The Yarra Ranges Collection, is a new, temporary exhibition that will connect residents to local stories and the history of the region through Yarra Ranges Regional Museum’s significant collection. The exhibition opens at Yarra Ranges Regional Museum on Saturday 2 August.

The exhibition features previously unseen objects from the museum’s collection including weird, wonderful and important objects that make up Yarra Ranges’ history. Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister said the exhibition will allow residents and visitors to experience and interact with the region’s history and stories to better understand its cultural identity. “I hope that when you come away

from Uncovered, you’ve experienced something special. “The rich history of this area is being collected and presented, it is something all residents can feel proud of,” Cr McAllister said. Upstairs, visitors can step into the shoes of a museum worker and learn how to collect, catalogue, preserve and display objects with items from the handling collection.

“It’s not all about looking at objects,” Cr McAllister said. “You can interact with them, touch the handling collection and arrange it for yourself. Uncovered: The Yarra Ranges Collection will show at Yarra Ranges Regional Museum, 35-37 Castella Street, Lilydale. The exhibition opens Saturday 2 August and runs to 2 November. Entry is free.

Frock jocks take to the catwalk By REBECCA BILLS EACH year one very special lady steals the show at the Angliss Op-Shop Fashion Parade. This year it was 91-years-young Marjorie Williams who knew how to rock a frock. Ms Williams has been strutting her stuff on the Angliss Op-Shop catwalk for more than 10 years with last Tuesday, 15 July, being her latest outing. Eighty-eight locals packed the Ferntree Gully Masonic Centre to cheer on Ms Williams and six other op-shop volunteers to raise money for the Angliss Hospital Ferntree Gully Auxiliary. Op shop co-ordinator and secretary of the Ferntree Gully Auxiliary Denise Gravatt said the event is always very humbling and rewarding. “It has been running for over 20 years. “We always have a lot of fun and this year we had Sam Broughton from the Eastern Health Foundation to open the show. “He looked great and one woman even asked if he came with the suit he wore,” she said. “I’ve been a member for 18 years and I find that each year we have people trying to book their spot as early as February as it is such a well-loved event in the community. “We love to put it on, it’s lot of hard work but it does make you feel good knowing the money will be helping others.” This year the group raised $1100 which will help the Auxiliary support patients at the Angliss Hospital, including providing vanity kits, pyjamas and other necessary items.

Sam Broughton from the Eastern Health Foundation opened the show in a two piece navy wool pin-stripe suit.

Sense of self is out of place By ANEEKA SIMONIS THE Basin Theatre Group is ready to wow audiences with a former Broadway production set to grace its stage. The Other Place, written by American playwright Sharr White, is a tale about relationships, chaos, loss and human resolve which made its successful debut at the renowned theatre in 2011. The main character is a middleaged woman with a highly successful career as a scientist but her life comes crashing down as things start to go awry. Director Barry O’Neill said the storyline absorbs audience members, forcing them to relate and question how they would work through similar situations in their lives. “It makes the audience think what happens when you are at the top of your profession and things go wrong,” he said. Of the play, White said the script plants difficult ideas about family life and understanding one’s sense of self. “It’s about the smartest woman on earth who discovers nothing she knows is true,” he said. The Basin’s production company is the first Australian non-professional group to premiere the 70-minute dramatic piece. It makes up the third season for The Basin Theatre Production’s 60th anniversary, following the Quartet and The Diary of Anne Frank which ran earlier this year. The cast and crew have been rehearsing for the past six weeks ahead of their debut on 15 August. The season will run from 15 August to 6 September with matinees on 17, 21 and 24 of August. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for members and $20 for people who book in groups of 10 or more. Audiences will be provided with light refreshments throughout the production as well as get the opportunity to meet with the cast after the show. To book, go to www.thebasintheatre.org.au or make a phone booking between 7pm and 9pm on 1300 784 668.

Skating prodigy “I DIDN’T get nervous at the nationals - I get excited because I’m there doing it.” That’s one amazing attitude to have for a 10-year-old, but that’s just young Caribbean Rollerama skate star Trinity Walter. She’s following in the footsteps of her mum Rachel, but in just 14 months as a competitive skater, Trinity has already started to blaze her own trail in the sport. She’s guided by internationally renowned coach Jayson Sutcliffe - a former world champion and 14-time World Championship representative - so she couldn’t be in better hands. A member of the Ferntree Gully-based club, Trinity has more than just the spirit of a winner she has a swag of medals to boot. She’s already a state and national champion - having claimed the Australian crown in Brisbane earlier this month - and now has to wait for her age to catch up so she can compete on the world stage as a teenager. Skating involves an array of moves, jumps and spins set to music and shares some of the characteristics of artistic gymnastics, and many from ice skating. Young skaters advance through the age group categories as they go and with each step more is expected of their routines. “You’re definitely not judged for your looks,” the Endeavour Hills youngster laughed. “I know that for sure because if you were, I’d probably get gold for sure because my costumes are really nice, and my make-up and my hair. “They judge you by your technique - how you form your arms - and then there’s technical merit (including footwork, hands, jumps and spins).” Rachel is thrilled that such a well-respected and proven coach is mentoring her daughter.

Trinity Walter has her own signature move to wow the skating judges. Judging by her accomplishments so far - it works. 124430 Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT “He’s employed pretty much all over the world to go and teach their skaters how to skate, so to have him as our coach is just amazing,” Rachel said. Trinity loves the sport of skating, in part, because of the quality of people involved and the friends she’s made out of it. She’s got all the skills - height on her jumps, speed, and a fearless mentality. But there’s always more for her to work on if she’s to achieve her ultimate goal. “I just want to make it to the Oceanias and Worlds. That would just be awesome,” she said.

THE playoffs dream is over for Sherbrooke Suns Youth Championship Men. Battling their way back into the top four of Big V’s premier youth basketball competition with a 101-65 demolition over Dandenong last week, Sherbrooke had to battle top seed Kilsyth to keep its finals dreams alive. The Suns couldn’t match

pace with the Cobras as Kilsyth scored 41-20 after the break to advance to the next round. Sherbrooke’s Michael Dow (18 points) and Daniel Steen (12 points, six rebounds) led the scoresheet while Jonathan Truman (13 rebounds) toiled under the defensive ring to reel in his sixth 10-or-more rebound game of the season. Sherbrooke’s State Championship men claimed a high-

scoring overtime thriller with a 105-100 win over Bulleen - led by Grant Johnson, who reeled in a whopping 46 points - while the Suns women blitzed Melbourne Tigers 81-59 to finish the season on a high note. The Suns men finished fourth through the home-andaway season and face Bulleen again in an elimination final at Belgrave Heights Christian School.

Four push for the front YVMDFNL Wrap 26 July WHAT another week of football and netball in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Community Bank Football Netball League. Division 1 has four teams sitting equal on top of the ladder - Wandin, Monbulk Upwey Tecoma and Olinda Ferny Creek. Division 2 has Seville one game clear of Yarra Glen but all that could change next week. Netball sees Upwey Tecoma one game clear of Wandin and Yarra Glen six points clear of Seville. The games next week have a lot riding on them as Wandin takes on Upwey Tecoma while Seville takes on Yarra Glen in both football and netball. SENIORS DIVISION 1 Healesville 11.9 (75) d Mount Evelyn 10.9 (69) This was an outstanding battle from start to finish with the lead never getting beyond six points for the majority of the game. The first quarter was goal for goal and Healesville held a narrow twopoint advantage at the first break. The second long break saw a onegoal advantage. The second at three quarter time were all tied and the scene was set for a great last quarter. There weren’t a lot of goals kicked in the last term but it was Healesville that kicked the critical goal that gave the team the all-important lead and it was able to hold on to it until the final siren to record a fantastic victory and put a dent in Mount Evelyn’s finals aspirations. Best Healesville: S. Donkin (3), B. Hodic, B. Clark. Mount Evelyn: M. Martin (4), D. Broadway, C. Urquhart. Warburton Millgrove 10.16 (76) d Belgrave 3.10 (28) Warburton was terrific in its win over Belgrave holding its opponents to just one goal after quarter time. Warby held just a one-goal lead at the first change but it was all its game after that. They stretched that lead to 17 points at half time and then held Belgrave goalless in the second half to run away with the game and win by a resounding 48 points in what was a dominating display despite the low scoring. Best Warburton Millgrove: T. McKail (2), L. Barnard (1), M. Wappett. Belgrave: E. Clasby (1), T. Stubley, J. Brown. Wandin 12.19 (91) d Monbulk 5.10 (40) Wandin has replaced Monbulk on the top of the ladder after handing it a

resounding 51-point defeat. Wandin set its win up in the first term with a seven-goal to one quarter that Monbulk just couldn’t recover from. The lead was extended to 53 points by half time and this game was well and truly in Wandin’s keeping. The second was an even battle and Monbulk did battle it out but it was simply outclassed in the early stages of the game and that was the difference in the end. Best Wandin: K. Talevski (6), H. Dudink (1), J. Messis (1). Monbulk: S. Lucas (3), S. Van Seters, T. Wragg. Olinda Ferny Creek 7.13 (55) d Emerald 1.3 (9) Emerald may have claimed a couple of big scalps this season but it was no match for Olinda. This game was extremely ugly in the first term without a goal scored but it was Olinda that had its chances booting five behinds while Emerald didn’t even trouble the scoreboard. The second Olinda booted three goals to one to grab a 20-point half time lead. The better side scored with relative ease and if they were a little more efficient forward they could have won by more than their eventual 46 point margin. Best Olinda Ferny Creek: G. Stevens (1), P. Rosier, M. Wright. Emerald: N. Callanan, C. Porter, M. Thompson. Upwey Tecoma 8.8 (56) d Woori Yallock 7.12 (54) This was the Grand Final replay from last season and this time the result was reversed as Upwey was able to hold on to win a great encounter that was in the balance throughout the four quarters. Upwey held the early advantage at the first break with a 10-point lead before Woori narrowed that gap to just three points at half time. The next quarter saw Upwey win more of the ball and it managed an inaccurate 3.5 to 2.2 for the term to grab a 12 point lead at the final change. The last quarter was a real battle for Upwey because it couldn’t score and Woori was coming hard. They had their chances scoring 2.4 and although Upwey didn’t score in the last quarter it was still good enough to hold on to win by a nailbiting two points. Best Upwey Tecoma: D. Sloane (2), T. Robinson (2), J. Waters (1). Woori Yallock: D. Mock, J. Williams, M. Witkowski.

DIVISION 1 A GRADE NETBALL Wandin 75 d Monbulk Hawks 12 Wandin was superb and was just a class above all day. It opened the day with a 23-goal to nil first quarter and didn’t let up for the rest of the game. Monbulk did get on the board in the second with six goals but Wandin shot 17 goals to go into half-time with a 34goal lead. In the second it shot goals at will and added another 35 goals to six to win by a massive 63 goals in what was a first class performance. Best Wandin: Tayissa Coppinger, Melissa Martinov (28), Samantha Coppinger. Monbulk Hawks: Claire Weickhardt, Katrina Wragg, Amanda Mitchell. Belgrave 57 d Warburton Millgrove 32 Belgrave did win this game and win it well but Warby did at least make them work hard for their goals. Belgrave opened the day well with a 17 goal to nine first quarter and stretched that lead to 13 goals by half time. The second half was more of the same with Warby battling hard but Belgrave just had a touch more class that saw it score more frequently and run out 25 goal victors. Best Belgrave: Lauren Bennett (34), Carmen Timms (23), Donna Marcus. Warburton Millgrove: Jaime Lord, Karly Wappett, Kellie Davidson. Upwey Tecoma 68 d Woori Yallock 23 This was just a comprehensive four quarter performance from Upwey which was in red hot form and unfortunately for Woori Yallock they suffered the brunt of it. Upwey raced to a 22-goal lead at half time and continued on its merry way in the second. Best Upwey Tecoma: Jordan Lingard (26), Krista Tomlinson, Natalie Montanari. Woori Yallock: Peri Stewart (18), Jordan Kennedy (5), Emma Hales. Mount Evelyn 40 d Healesville 30 This was a tough battle right throughout and it took until the last quarter for Mount Evelyn to eventually shake off the determined Healesville. Mount Evelyn’s lead was five goals at the first break and remained that at half time. Healesville clawed their way slightly closer by three quarter time trailing by four goals to give them a sniff at victory.

Wandin’s Kate Checkley looks for an opening.

Mount Evelyn controlled the tempo in the last quarter and shot goals at crucial moments which made the difference come game’s end as it walked off with a tough 10 goal victory. Best Mount Evelyn: Jessica Walker, Maddie Hickey (15), Eliza Beazleigh. Healesville: Jenna Cumming, Caitlyn Jeffress, Chelsea Connell. Olinda Ferny Creek v Emerald Olinda started well and took a fivegoal lead at the first break. Emerald kept in touch in the second

only letting Olinda extend its lead by one goal. The margin increased to 16 goals at the last break. Olinda continued its dominance with a solid four quarter performance which saw it win comfortably by 28 goals. Best Olinda Ferny Creek: Ashlee Howard (35), Tamara Luke (31), Carolyn Bates. Emerald: Megan Whiteroad (22), Kate Griffin, Lana Whyte.

State champs bring out best THE Yarra Ranges Athletics competed at the State Little Athletics Cross Country Championships held on a tough course at Bundoora Park on Saturday. Twenty-six club athletes took the opportunity to compete against the best athletes in the state with outstanding results from all of them. A sensational 5th place at the World Junior Athletics Championships by past club athlete Zak Patterson was the final piece of motivation required to bring out the competitive spirit in our future athletics stars. The highlight of the day was the third place team medal for our Under 15 girl’s team of Molly Dixon, Amy Veenendaal and Tammarah Brown. This event will be the last event the girls can compete in as little athletes, a team medal was a fitting reward for their efforts over the past few years. Other medals went to Kiara Flavel (1st U8 Girls), Madeline Laven (3rd U9 Girls), Georgia Laven (1st U11 Girls), Lily Peacock (2nd U12 Girls), James Laven (2nd U14 Boys) and our U13 Girls team of Lily Thompson, Lee Taylor and Rickylee Brown (3rd). Well done also to the other competing athletes. The club is extremely proud of all its members and their efforts throughout the day both in competing and supporting. Many of the fields had over 60 competitors making competition very tough. Next week is the club Cross Country Championships at Morrison’s Reserve, Mount Evelyn. Events kick off at 8.45am for what is sure to be a great morning of cross country. Everyone is welcome, all you need is your runners, the barbecue will be on, too. Go to www. yarrarangesathletics.org.au for more information on upcoming events, especially the Cockatoo Hills Challenge, and full results from the weekend.

Martin wins cup By DENNIS FULLER

B Grade was headed up by Ken Sumsion (25) when his 34 points was just enough to greet the judges. Graeme White won the Stockdale and Leggo nearest the pin on the 4th on the 12th and 13th pin cash on the 18th. The ladies Winter Cup was won by Brianna McCoy who showed sublime skills to kill off all opposition in quick smart time. Wednesday’s Obliquely Faded Golf (OFG) was a stableford event that certainly suited the free swinging game of Ken Sumsion (24) when he conquered all with 39 points. Leigh Morison (20) and Sepp Krummenacher (20) were next with 37 points followed by Leigh Piggott (31) with 36. Next Saturday is a chance for the members to line up to win the August VGL Monthly Medal. John Fisher scooped the pool while Peter Glasscock finished his round with a flourish when he won the pro.

THE final round of the threeround Winter Cup was played at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday. Due to the fact that the rain tap had been left on for a couple of weeks, the second round was assigned to the too hard basket and the cup was played over two rounds. Peter Clowes (16) led the field into the day’s play and stayed in the lead, but was joined by Ross Martin (13) on the last holes. Both players finished with 69 stableford points, so the countback system was activated and Martin emerged the Winter Cup winner. These two were followed in by Dean Shannon (16) on 68 and Peter Glasscock (16) on 64. The rest had to proffer fairly weak excuses. The daily comp and A Grade was won on a countback by Martin over Shannon when the both finished with 37 points with Broc Reynolds (14) next with 36 points.

Wallowing in the mud IT WAS a busy day at Monbulk football ground, with six games worked out in muddy conditions. The Under 9s kicked off the day against South Belgrave and put on a clinic for those watching their skills. Mika Bloom led the way with a huge long goal in the first minute to get things started and the rest of the team gelled for their best team effort for the year. The Under 10s also followed up with taking a positive attitude into their game, and it showed in the play. Under 11s played against one of the top sides Upwey Tecoma and the tackling, pressure and 1 per centre paid off for an upset win with Jessie Turner and Natasha Decker leading the way. Under 12s continued on their way to the finals with a commanding win against Wandin. The Under 14s were up against a much taller and stronger Wandin side and fought hard but were beaten by a better side on the day. Under 16s played against the higher ranked Healesville side and battled on manfully for three quarters in an open flowing game to be run over in the last quarter.
