MP rejects rival’s claims Member for Benambra Bill Tilley tallys up his contribution to the electorate, scotching claims he is ignoring Tallangatta. FOR THE FULL STORY TURN TO PAGE 2

Blood for life By KRYSTEN MANUEL AS PART of National Blood Donor Week, the Albury Donor Centre is again celebrating the selfless and substantial contributions of strangers, as well as the unique success of the centre itself. But behind the celebrations, Blood Service spokesperson Cathy Chapman said the centre was in great need of donations for the coming month. “Albury is pretty steady, but I’ve noticed that through August we do need more bookings,” she said. “We always need more donors in winter because people get sick in winter, so there are more patients but less donors. “Also, a lot of our retired people become grey nomads and go away, especially in winter.” Tomorrow, the Albury Donor Centre will hold their annual Milestone Donor Function. This year is the first year for celebrating donors who have reached their 300th milestone. “We’re very lucky here in Albury, we have a strong community that come in here and donate,” Ms Chapman said. “Sometimes we collect the most plasma regionally in NSW. We’re only just behind some of the metropolitan centres - We’re pretty community minded. “The blood from Albury goes up to Sydney initially but quite often it will end up back here.” Ms Chapman said although Albury is typically very generous when it comes to donating blood and a slight drop in numbers is partially attributed to a change in policy. “One of the things is we have here a very strong schools program and last year there was a decision made to only let youth donors donate once a year rather than the three or four times,” she said. “They don’t replenish their iron as

Community relations officer Cathy Chapman and Donor Centre manager Sergio DeMarchi remind everyone on National Blood Donor Week that ‘every drop counts.’ quickly as adults, so we don’t want to impact their studies and that sort of thing.” The Albury Donor Centre was the first regional Donor Centre to offer plasma only donations in 2004.

The first three years of plasma donations were taken in the old centre at the Albury Base Hospital with up to three machines, but then increased to six plasma machines when the current David Street Blood Donor Centre

was opened. Now, the centre has eight plasma machines. “Most donor centres are still two thirds blood,” Ms Chapman said. “Plasma is actually the one we have greater demand for because it’s used a

lot in cancer treatments. In our overall consumption of blood and plasma, cancer patients use 34 per cent. “Plasma is very important, it’s turned into 17 different products that will save lives.”

IN THE lead-up to the state election, Member for Benambra Bill Tilley is assuring the electorate, particularly Tallangatta, they have not been overlooked as suggested by his opponent Jennifer Podesta. “I’ve been working tirelessly for this electorate, he said. “I refute what my political opponent is saying, that I’m complacent and the area has been neglected. “It’s low-brow, low-fruit typical politics and it’s misinformed. “I’m one that will always play the ball and not the man. As a local leader, a representative in the parliament and as a legislator you can fix 95 per cent of things but people will always want to discuss that other five per cent. Of course, we will always work towards solving that five per cent as well. Last week’s NewsWeekly saw Ms Podesta travelling to Tallangatta as part of a tour through rural towns within the electorate to see what issues they were facing. Ms Podesta said issues that arose from the visit included transport, access to health services and economic growth. “I think the whole electorate has tended to be overlooked, it’s been a safe seat for a very long time, she said. Mr Tilley said in the current term of the Coalition Government, $22,581,248 had been spent in the Towong Shire to date. “Those are things over and above government operating costs, things I’ve actually had an involvement with, he said. “Tallangatta is about to do its biggest project it has ever had since it moved from Old Tallangatta to New Tallangatta 60 years ago. This is the Tallangatta Eco-Education Integrated Service Hub and it is a partnership with a whole range of government groups, local government and the community. “It has a library, a community centre, child services, health services and it’s all part of the Tallangatta Masterplan which was done in 2011. Furthermore, Mr Tilley has had a hand in

Member for Benambra Bill Tilley says his electorate is far from ‘overlooked.’ bringing $128,858,140 over and above government operating costs to the electorate of Benambra in the past 3.5 years. “Let me assure you I have worked so hard for this legacy and the list is massive, he said. “If you want to talk about rail, yes - two years ago it was shocking. The government was aware there was only going to be a limited service and I advocated and got the support of the Coalition Government to return a full service. “Today if you buy a train ticket to leave Albury Wodonga, there’s 95 per cent efficiencies and it’s doing the best in comparison to the Ballarat and Bendigo lines. “The maximum capacity for the engines that run on our V/Line service is 115, I’m working to secure the change of the engines which will have a significantly increased speed. The Federal Government is responsible to bring the infrastructure up to a standard. “We are going in and making the improvements and we’re absolutely committed to those improvements. “All I ask is for people to judge for themselves - in the next election, would they consider being returned to the same government that for 11 years didn’t deliver in country and rural Victoria? Mr Tilley’s political career began in 2005 when he was successfully pre-selected by the Liberal Party.

We were responding to many incidents of mental health, domestic violence, social incapacity, sub-services and things around the area. “When the police are the first response to society’s ills, something has failed in government - they’re not delivering in certain areas. Now, having served nearly two terms, Mr Tilley believes the real strength of the electorate comes from the businesses who have chosen to settle there. “We have some fantastic long-term established businesses here, he said. “When you look at the history here it’s the making of a rural city where the Albury Wodonga Development Corporation came here, there were decisions made between NSW and Victorian governments to come and establish a city here. “We now have the defence industries, the Mars family investing here, Norske Skog - they’re great long-stay employers who create a lot of opportunity. All of these businesses are employing in excess of 500 people and then there’s the flow-on business from each of them. “That’s what makes us so strong.

Halving our waste ALBURYCITY and Halve Waste have won almost $500,000 worth of grant funding from the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) for recycling infrastructure and initiatives. Released through the State Government’s five-year, $4.6 million Waste Less, Recycle More program, the funding will help cover a range of infrastructure and education initiatives aimed at reducing waste to landfill. The money will help cover a large community recycling centre at Albury Waste Management Centre targeting problem waste such as batteries and fluorescent light bulbs, as well as infrastruc-

ture and education to prevent illegal dumping and a business advisory service program aimed at increasing recycling in the commercial sector. In addition to funds secured by council, resources have also been allocated for a MurrayMurrumbidgee region Industrial Ecology Network aimed at facilitating partnerships between producers and users of waste products in order to keep more materials in the productive economy as opposed to landfill. Halve Waste is an initiative of Albury City Council and Riverina Murray Regional Organisation of Councils (RAMROC), in partnership with

the City of Wodonga and the shires of Towong, Greater Hume, Corowa and Indigo. The program engages businesses, residents and schools. So far the program has provided home compost training to 1200 residents, recycling education to 1600 school students and 320 free business waste assessments. The first workshop to identify the regional opportunities will take place in August. If you run a business and would like to reduce your waste to landfill or need further information, contact Tiffany at MRA Consulting on 0428 188 667 ortiffany@mraconsulting.com.au.

Further flood funds flow from finances A FURTHER payment of $2,441,285 to Tumbarumba Shire Council for the restoration of Mannus Creek Dam from the Minister for Finance and Services Dominic Perrottet was announced last week. “The floods of October 2010 were some of the worst our region had experienced in decades and had caused enormous damage, especially to the Mannus Creek Dam, Member for Albury Greg Aplin said. “I worked hard with council and the community to access the State Government’s Natural Disaster Relief Assistance Program so that we could restore council assets to their pre-disaster condition. “This payment is the third and fourth progress payment made to Tumbarumba Shire Council as part of the Natural Disaster Relief Assistance for the restoration of Mannus Creek Dam. Mr Aplin advised that the NSW Government has provided a total of

Nearly $2.5 million has been further granted to the restoration of Mannus Creek Dam, four years after the devastating floods. $8,990,000 for this important project and paid council $3,612,663 to date.

Under an agreement with the Australian Government, NSW pays for the first $140.5 million of natural disaster infrastructure costs each year. Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack said the Australian Government matched NSW expenditure for costs between $140.5 million and $245.8 million and beyond that covered three quarters of all costs.

Let the rivers run public infrastructure. “The flows being considered are below minor flood level but sending them down the river more frequently might matter in some areas, and that is why we’re getting local input at this stage. Mr Korodaj said finding ways to deliver slightly higher flows more often would help increase the benefits of environmental water and see a healthier river system. “At this stage, we are just studying what might be possible. This work will unfold over several years and the Murray-Darling Basin Authority is committed to involving communities from the beginning, he said. “The information we gather during the current phase will feed into recommendations to basin ministers at the end of the year. CONVERSATIONS continued last week in Albury and Corowa between the Murray-Darling Basin Authority and local councils to identify what constraints there might be to sending environmental water down the Murray River. The MDBA’s Terry Korodaj and Rachel Clarke met with officials from the Albury City Council and the Corowa Shire Council to review maps that indicate where water is likely to reach under different flow rates. “The council officers brought their understanding of local conditions and pointed out how the flows were likely to move through the river and around the creeks and lower floodplain in this area, Mr Korodaj said. “In particular, they helped identify where these flows might affect

Social Seen Tree fest is going annual By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE success of National Tree Day in Corry’s Wood Parkland Thurgoona, which attracted about 40 people, has prompted AlburyCity to make it an annual occasion. In addition, Woolshed Thurgoona Landcare Group is now forming a sub-group to focus specifically on the Corry’s Wood area. “AlburyCity has been working with the local Landcare group who provided the guards and the stakes, AlburyCity provided the plants and the Thurgoona progress association has been really helpful promoting the event in their newsletter,” vegetation management officer Steve Onley said. “We’ve had a really good engagement process with the community there and we’re looking forward to doing community tree days every year now. “The local Landcare group is now forming a sub-group which is just going to be looking at that Corry’s Wood area. They’re looking for community members to register their interest through their website. “There’ll be ongoing working bees and things going on within that reserve because obviously the community is demonstrating they have a concern for how that reserve is managed and looked after. They want to do something about it, which is great. “As part of the day we also had our Eastern Riverina Noxious Weed Advisory Group (ERNWAG) trailer. AlburyCity’s noxious weed officer was there with information about all weeds that were relevant for that Thurgoona area.” Participants were treated to a well-earned barbecue lunch and showbags on the day.

Banking on blood

Chugg tugs at heartstrings By KRYSTEN MANUEL OVER 35 years after his first donation, Albury man Graeme Chugg will receive recognition from the Australian Red Cross Blood Service for making a dramatic difference in the lives of 900 Australians. Mr Chugg, who donates plasma at the Albury clinic every fortnight and has made a total of 300 donations to date, will receive an award at the annual Milestone Donor Function this Thursday. “I started to donate blood when I was 18, a workmate dragged me along,” he said.

“Then when it became possible to make a plasma only donation, I started doing that because I think more people benefit from the donation,” he said. Blood Service spokesperson Cathy Chapman said Mr Chugg was a familiar face around the Albury Donor Centre. “Graeme is one of our fantastic donors who comes in every fortnight to do plasma donation,” she said. “He’s very low key. He just comes in and does his thing. He’s one of those amazing, typical Aussie blokes who rolls up

his sleeves and donates without a fuss,” Ms Chapman said. “When the opportunity to come up to donate every two weeks instead of every three months with plasma, he stepped up because he knew that would help more people. “He just really wanted to help out in the community. “It’s nice at this time of year with National Blood Donor Week to actually be able to acknowledge our regular blood donors who roll up their sleeves time and time again,” Ms Chapman said. Blood donor marks milestone ALBURY woman Ann Appleby has been recognised by the Australian Red Cross Blood Service for making a life-saving difference in the lives of 750 Australians. Fourteen years after her first donation, Ms Appleby will receive an award for some 250 donations or 117.5 litres of blood during National Blood Donor Week, which concludes on 3 August. Ms Appleby is one of 35 Border locals receiving an award for reaching a milestone blood donation in the past 12 months. “I donate as it is something I can do for the community; I enjoy knowing my donation helps many people that otherwise might not be here,” she said. “Donating is supported by my employer, the ATO. I have encouraged many people to donate over the 34 years.” Blood Service spokesperson Cathy Chapman said Ann’s life-saving donations have potentially improved the lives of thousands of Australians, including new mothers, cancer

patients and people undergoing emergency surgery. “Every one of Ann’s donations help to save three lives, but her contribution has stretched so much further,” she said. “Blood donors change more than just the three lives they help to save with each blood donation. “A donation of blood has a ripple effect, from the person receiving the blood, right through to their entire family and their friends. “When you give a blood donation you make an amazing difference not only to the recipient but also to their loved ones. “Ann is just one person but every donation she gives makes an amazing difference to the lives of countless others.” National Blood Donor Week is a celebration of Australia’s 500,000 blood donors who together made more than 1.3 million donations over the past year. ONE of the many grateful local recipients of blood donations is Warrant Officer Class 2 Dennis Ramsay, who owes his life to the generosity of strangers. In March 2008, Mr Ramsay was diagnosed and hospitalised with group A streptococcus, toxic shock syndrome and multi-organ failure and was subsequently placed in an induced coma for 32 days. Unfortunately, Mr Ramsay had both feet amputated due to a gangrene infection and was discharged in September 2008 to begin the rehabilitation process. Due to the severity of the infection and multiple organ failure, Mr Ramsay received a number of extensive and complex medical treatments, including multiple blood and plasma transfusions during surgery. Since returning to work, Dennis has not only been an Ambassador for the Blood Service, but has also embarked on a variety of new sporting challenges as part of his rehab and new life as a blood recipient. Mr Ramsay currently leads a full and active life, having competed in wheelchair basketball, seated volley ball, seated shot put, seated javelin, seated discus, wheelchair road racing, hand cycling and sit snow skiing.

LOCAL woman Ronwyn Davies is the grateful recipient of 10 - 15 units of donated blood, for which she owes her life. “Their generous decision to become blood donors helped in giving me the precious gift of life for which I am eternally grateful,” she said. “To donate blood to help a complete stranger, I see this as incredibly special. “Also, the organ donor and family are rarely out of my thoughts, and I hope they have some comfort knowing they have saved a life by this wonderful gift.” At just 37 years old, Ms Davies was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis (liver disease). Some 13 years later, her liver was failing and she found she was spending more and more time in hospital. “The doctors and nursing staff

at the liver transplant clinic prepared me for a major operation - physically and mentally,” she said. “Seven months later, the hospital rang and we swung into action. “I remember that morning of the transplant. My family was with me as I waited, my life now depended on the skills of the doctors in theatre. “Finally, the operation was over, despite the pain, I felt so happy and relieved. I had my life back because of a donor, a medical team, my family and friends. “There was no turning back. “During the surgery, I was told that about 10-15 units of blood were used, keeping me alive while my failing liver was replaced with the precious donor liver. “Without such a large amount of blood being available such lifesaving transplant surgeries would just not be possible.”

Ronwyn Davies is ever grateful for the generous blood donations that saved her life.

Gifts with a difference

SIMPLE Indulgence owner Helen Goldsworthy has the goods for every occasion. SIMPLE Indulgence is a locally owned and operated business for 15 years now. From humble beginnings in 1999, Simple Indulgence quickly grew from dream to reality for owner Helen Goldsworthy. The business began as a party plan format before moving to the Coles shopping centre and then the Birallee shopping centre. 15 years on, and Helen has now opened up a third store in Lavington Square Plaza. Helen and her daughter Tanya Thies are the ladies to see if you are looking for that special gift with a difference. “The range of gifts is endless, whether it be for yourself, your home or for birthdays, wedding anniversaries or the die hard AFL and NRL supporters,” Helen said. “We have gifts for beanie kid collectors, stuffed animals, new baby, christening, communion/ confirmation gifts, AFL and NRL merchandise. “More of our range includes souvenirs, Schleich animals, Peppa Pig, Giggle & Hoot, baby and children clothing, including beautiful summer dresses and christening dresses, Holden, Ford, Jim Beam and Bundy merchandise, Angel Pins for all occasions as well as Australian bodycare products, cards, gift wrapping, candles and

much more. “You are guaranteed to find that special something.” Helen has been on the Wodonga Chamber of Commerce for a number of years and Simple Indulgence have been finalists in a number of Chamber awards. Over the past years, Helen has also produced three Television promotions, which starred her own family members – her grandchildren and great grandchildren. You can find Simple Indulgence on Facebook. “I run weekly competitions on our Facebook page, from Sunday super specials, Tuesday night auctions and competition Friday, and we always have a great response from this,” Tanya said. Simple Indulgence is still the best gift stop, as Helen and Tanya always get told by their many customers that they will only shop at Simple Indulgence for their gifts and cards. The knowledge Helen has gathered is the reason her three shops are so successful in slow economic climate. “Customer service is the most important part of our business,” Helen said. “We consider Simple Indulgence customers to be very special people.”

North Albury Public School welcomed their ‘mystery reader’ - AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack.

‘Mystery’ mayor By KRYSTEN MANUEL STUDENTS at North Albury Primary School were in for a pleasant surprise last Thursday when their weekly mystery reader was revealed. Albury mayor Kevin Mack took some time out of his day to help promote literacy and imagination by reading an old favourite of his. “The Velveteen Rabbit,” he said. “I gave it to my eldest daughter when she was five. Sixteen years later she gave it back to me and said, ‘I haven’t read it, I’m scared of rabbits.’ “So at least it came in handy for something.” Like any good story, readers

are left with a moral - to be real you need to be loved. Cr Mack added to student engagement by putting the book’s illustrations on a Powerpoint, a technique not used before in the school. “It was so the kids could see the picture relating to the story because it’s a very well illustrated book,” he said. “The teachers said it was quite novel and they’re looking at doing that in the future because it engages the children.” The reading lounge at North Albury Primary has been functioning for just over three months now, with Cr Mack being the 14th reader. “They have a reading lounge

set up specifically for carers and parents when they’re coming to school,” he said. “If they’re early to school, they can go to the lounge, pick a book and read to their children. “It’s about encouraging parents and others to read to their children, so the children get used to the notion of someone reading to them and when they go home they’ll ask. “It’s about making reading fun but also encouraging children to use their imagination. Too often they focus on X-Box and Playstations and everything else, they don’t focus on their imagination. “It’s a really important project and it was fun - I had a lot of fun.”

So close, but 1000 miles from care By KRYSTEN MANUEL JUST 30 minutes from Albury is the pub that has it all. If only the walls could talk! Built in 1891, the Culcairn Hotel welcomes every kind of patron - including those who enjoy lunch and dinners when travelling on the XPT - through the doors to utilise the bar, restaurant, TAB, games room, function room, beer garden and accommodation. Operating the hotel is a passion for owner Shannon Barber - who has been involved with the hotel one way or another his whole life. “I love pubs - on both sides of the bar,” he said. “My father and his brother, Wayne and Garry Barber, bought the hotel in the late ’90s. Myself and my brother worked behind the bar and my mother helped run the winery tours, which we’ll start getting going again soon. “Eventually they sold the freehold to the current owners and my cousin (Kieren Barber) and I bought the lease. “We both grew up and went to school here, played footy here, so we know all the locals. It pulled at the heart strings to get in here and have a go.” And having a go is exactly what they’re doing. Shannon and his fiancee Amy Pearce, Kieren, gardeners Peter and Debbie Graham and Shannon’s parents Wayne and Christine Barber (who love to offer a helping hand at their old pub) have big plans for the huge building and grounds which are already underway, starting with the gardens.

“The gardens are something we’re trying to concentrate on and get back to pristine condition again,” he said. “The kids’ play area should be completed by spring. The grounds are a nice environment for parents to get out there, escape and have a drink knowing their kids are safe.” Also at the back of the hotel is a marquee - perfect for birthdays, anniversaries and even the odd wedding. “The marquee is fully enclosed with heating, big screen projector and outside bar,” Shannon said. “It’s ready to go for any function. We’ve had birthdays there, and years ago my sister actually had her wedding reception out there! “We’re working on a decking area to add to the functions and live music, which we would like to be a focus coming into spring. We even have plans for an annual festival seeing as our grounds are so extensive.” Rest assured, the interior of the pub has even more to offer. Renovated with respect to its history, the hotel offers a rustic, homely ambience featuring an open fireplace, exposed timber bar and clever lighting made of everything from seed drills to wagon wheel centrepieces and tram lines. The accommodation has also kept its history. “There’s 20 rooms ranging from triples, to doubles and singles with shared bathrooms and showers,” Shannon said. “It’s quite romantic to stay in a pub

For a cold beer and a hearty meal, you can’t go past the rustic charms of the Culcairn Hotel. of this age. They haven’t been renovated to look contemporary, we’ve tried to keep the original feel up.” And of course, the food is well and truly worth stopping for. “I’m a bit of a foodie so I pride myself on the food side of things,” Shannon said.

“I have a brilliant chef in Clinton Brown. We source our meat from the local butcher, we don’t try and be someone we’re not, it’s just good wholesome food. “And we’re looking at starting Sunday breakfasts in mid-August.” So if you haven’t been to the Cul-

Hints on tint “GET the best window tinting to suit your car and your needs.” That’s the advice from Matt Neven, owner of All About Window Tinting, 437A Wagga Road at Lavington. Matt said too often car owners spent a lot of money on a new vehicle and were tempted to cut corners when they came to window tinting. However he said window tinting was important for your own life and for the life of your car. “Don’t go for the cheapest tinting - cheapest is not always the best, but the most expensive isn’t always the best either,” he said. “You have to find the happy medium and find the tinting that suits you and your needs.” According to Matt tinting the windows on your vehicle is one of the best ways to improve the look and comfort of any vehicle whether it be your family car, work truck or even your farming equipment. As you drive you will find that your vehicle is much cooler and more comfortable. Auto window tinting provides exceptional protection from the sun’s destructive UV rays by creating a permanent barrier between your vehicle’s interior and the outside world. He said the right tinting would cut down 99 percent of the harmful UV rays that could come into the car and offer good occupant protection.

Matt said you could also save on your motor’s wear and tear by lowering your use of airconditioning which in turn would lower your fuel consumption and give you better fuel economy. All films used by All About Window Tinting are high-quality Solar Gard films backed with a nation wide lifetime warranty and provide a SPF factor of 285+. Tinting also reduces a significant amount of glare coming into the car. As well as protecting humans, Matt said tinting was a good idea to help extend the lifespan of your car. “Australia has one of the harshest climates,” he explained, adding that without adequate protection leather and plastic interiors were prone to fading and cracking. He said in an economic climate where people had less money to spend and waste and were looking to hold on to their cars for longer, protecting the interior made sense and helped to get a longer life out of your vehicle. All About Window Tinting has been in business in Lavington for the past 15 years and is open Monday to Friday 8am to 5.30pm and Saturday 8.30am to 12.30pm, closed on Sunday. WE have just reluctantly handed back a Mercedes-Benz CLS 250 CDI four-door coupe that, with a little imagination, can be classed as affordable. With a recommended tag of $114,900, the turbo-diesel version sits around $50,000 under the price of the V8 petrol CLS 500 we tested last year. Mercedes-Benz Australia is extremely aggressive at the moment. Its new A-Class is selling its wheels off, and the about to be launched C-Class, the most important vehicle in the importer’s line-up, is receiving a lot of presale publicity. The original Mercedes CLS, launched 10 years ago, had soft flowing lines that were later toughened up by way of a facelift. The all-new version has an even more aggressive look. The front grille is almost upright and has strong cues to the stunning SLS Gullwing by AMG. Not immediately noticeable is the use of LED headlights, a first in mass production cars. These adjust automatically in four directions - up, down, left or right - according to inputs from other cars’ headlights or taillights and the way the CLS’s steering wheel is turned. They provide almost as much vision as you get in daylight and we loved them. Swooping swage lines and the ‘Mercedes ponton’ look of the rear guards complete the side profile. At the tail, the new Mercedes four-door coupe features huge taillights that stretch a long way forward. The interior is done in highquality materials that are finished to an exceptional standard. Power comes from the well-known 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel and peaks at 150kW. More important than power is torque and this engine has plenty of it, 500 Newton metres to be precise.

Mercedes CLS four-door coupe has a bold look that’s reflected in its driving. It’s not that many years since you needed a six-litre petrol V8 to achieve something approaching 500Nm. The transmission is also familiar, Merc’s seven-speed self shifter is one of the sweetest in the business. Multiple driver aids will do everything they can to keep you out of trouble. Should all else fail the CLS has no fewer than 11 airbags, including one to protect the driver’s knees to minimise injuries. It goes without saying the the CLS-Class gained five stars when tested by European authorities. The front seats of the new CLS are large and spacious and support reasonably well, it’s not intended to be a sports model and comfort is more important than the ability to corner at big G-forces. The basic design of the suspension is already good and is backed up by electronic sensors that can assist a driver who has over-driven the car, or who has simply made a mistake. Legroom in the rear seat is good, though you wouldn’t describe it as being generous. It’s obviously not a Mercedes S-Class, or even an EClass back there, but four adults will find they can settle back and revel in the luxury of this sleek coupe/sedan. Back country roads didn’t show up any great deterioration. Performance from what is a relatively small turbo-diesel powerplant is very good, indeed all but the revheads will find it has far more acceleration than they need. There’s some lag when the

engine is suddenly asked to do something but once the turbocharger is spinning in a purposeful manner there’s plenty of urge. Indeed, in some stages through the rev range it feels almost as good as the V8 petrol. Love it! Fuel consumption in easy running sat in the six to seven litre range, with fives there if you really work at it. Around town diesel usage lifted to eight to 10 litres per 100 kilometres which is pretty low considering the performance potential. The new Mercedes-Benz CLS four-door coupe with a turbo-diesel engine is a highly competent machine that looks great and is dynamic on the road. To test drive the Mercedes, inquire at Mercedes Benz Berwick, 518 Princes Highway, Berwick. Phone 1300 622 622. Model range CLS 250 CDI 2.1-litre turbodiesel four-door coupe: $114,900 (automatic); CLS 500 4.7-litre bi-turbo petrol four-door coupe: $159,900 (automatic); CL3 63 AMG 5.5-litre bi-turbo petrol four-door coupe: 262,650 (automatic).

X marks the spot By KRYSTEN MANUEL WE ALL know what it’s like to be home-sick, some better than others. It’s the type of feeling that somehow makes you feel alone in a room full of people. This familiar situation begs the question - why on earth would anyone want to do this? Well, for most of us it’s for a greater good. For X Factor star Taylor Henderson this is certainly the case. In his refreshingly open and honest way, Henderson told NewsWeekly all about the two faces of success and fame - the burning passion for his craft and the family and friends he misses fiercely. Currently, Henderson is putting all his efforts towards his music as his new album Burnt Letters was released earlier this month and of course, there’s the tour to come. The album comes after Henderson released his latest single When You Were Mine, co-penned by the young artist which became an instant hit racking up a top five position on the ARIA single chart and achieving platinum status. The success of the single set the tone for Burnt Letters - an impressive collection of handsome songs that weave together

pop and folk styles with an apparent ease. One song in particular sums up the artist’s current state - Already Gone. “Already Gone is one I relate to right now,” he said. “I’m in Sydney at the moment and I live in Geelong on a farm. “I know it sounds kind of cliched but I wrote this song when I was meant to be home one day but the trip got cancelled and I had to stay up in Sydney for another week. I was so gutted. “I had this plan, I had a few friends’ 21sts and I couldn’t go to them, I had family I hadn’t seen for months. It hits you in the gut because even though I love what I do, sometimes I miss the simplicity of just being home. “I do miss home but at the same time I love what I’m doing. It’s kind of a duel between the two things I love. “I’ll stand in a room and sing to thousands of people but at the end of the day, yes - I’m standing with people so I’m not alone, but I’m standing with strangers. “There’s nothing better than when you’re in the company of someone you actually really know and they know you from the inside out.”

Box office

Henderson has put his heart and soul into his new album, which he hopes will define him as an independent artist, not just ‘the kid from X Factor.’ “This album, I want to make clear that this isn’t about a kid being on a show that sings a bunch of covers,” he said. “This album is a testament to the songs I write and I am worth a little bit more than just my own interpretation of other people’s songs. “These songs very much belong to me and are written by me along with some amazing writers. “The songs are very personal. It’s kinda like when a girl has a handbag - the things you keep within that are there because they belong to you, they’re close to you, you have them by your side, they’re hidden from the public. “I hope people like the album. If you want to know me you just have to grab a copy of the album because there are some things in there that are beyond personal. It even makes me feel a little vulnerable.” Taylor Henderson is performing on Sunday 17 August at 8pm at The Albury Entertainment Centre. Tickets are $54.90. Inquiries: (02) 6051 3030.

D’Movie is a D’isgrace By KRYSTEN MANUEL MOVIE: Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie STARRING: Brendan O’Carroll, Jennifer Gibney, Fiona O’Carroll, Nick Nevern DIRECTOR: Ben Kellett DURATION: 94 minutes BEFORE I get labelled as a Mrs Brown’s Boys hater, let me just mention my companion... A true fan of the show, pom-poms and all, he made me miss one of the typically few annual horrors worth seeing (Deliver Us From Evil) - and I do love a good possession - all in the expectation that Mrs Brown would have us in stitches. He apologised later that evening. The truth is, I actually like Mrs Brown’s Boys the television show. It’s no Big Bang Theory but it’s worth a laugh or two. The film is a different story, though I did find one of Ben Kellett’s techniques particularly funny... But first, the story - Mrs Brown (O’Carroll) works at the Moore Street Market selling fruit and veg, a tradition for the women in her family. She loves the work, loves the people she works with and loves the sentimental spot she

Taylor Henderson is bringing his heartfelt new album Burnt Letters to Albury in August.

does it in week by week. But there’s always someone out to upset the apple cart. In this case, it’s a greedy developer who wants to dismiss Mrs Brown and all the other stallholders. Despite an enormous tax debt weighing on her mind, Mrs Brown and the other stallholders courageously push back in a bid to save their livelihoods. It’s not much of a storyline, but then again the show never really blows you away in that area either. The acting was good - O’Carroll stole the show as per usual, though I’ve never been a fan of actors randomly addressing the audience. It’s a crude tool that should have stayed in the ’80s. The jokes were hit and miss, more miss, and the singing at the start and finish of the movie was irritating if anything. The one thing I can say did go down well with me was Kellett’s decision to leave some of the out-takes in. These scenes were by far the funniest of the film. Unfortunately there’s only two of them. Two decent laughs deserves two decent stars ...

Technology is marching on IT IS interesting to observe how different brands have reacted to the change of technology within the home entertainment industry. This is an ever evolving market with new products, new old products and products from budget companies that look hitech just to confuse everybody. Over the years many fundamentals have not changed. In the 1970s customers were wary of the remote control, in the 1980s less than 10 per cent of the population could time shift a video recorder, by the 1990s the computer was in the man’s cave as a hobby. The common thread is most people are comfortable with the technology they grew up with, only taking part in newer technologies when it suits rather than just having the fashion of the day. In recent times we have watched iconic brands like Panasonic, Sony, Phillips, Loewe and others work hard on wooing the youth market with only moderate success. The penny is only starting to drop with those companies to provide products that are built on lines that maintain quality and stay with rel-

Today’s hit brands are about introducing the latest, quickest and cheapest with the view that the fashion changes quickly and if there is a misfire the customer changes quickly much the same way a child falls out of love with the latest toy. Homes&Property Albury Wodonga

Perfect fit for a family THIS elevated, north-facing home is perfect for a young family. Located in one of Wodonga’s most sought-after estates - Willow Rise, 2 Stapleton Court offers the functionality needed for families presented in a warm, country style. From the street, passers-by would note its elevation, established gardens and gorgeous bullnosed verandah stretching across the front of the home. They might also notice the convenient separate garage - brick with two lock-up roller doors (one following through to the yard side). Upon entering the home, its classic country style really sets in, with timber-lined dado boards and wide entry. To your right is the lounge room - the place to be in this cold winter weather, thanks to the stunning open fireplace and hydrologic heating throughout the home. This room also features a large bay window with lovely views thanks to the home’s elevation. Adding on to the lounge is a smaller space for formal dining, complete with classy modern light fixtures. The kitchen includes timber cupboards, stainless steel appliances (including dishwasher) and electric cooking. Flowing on from the kitchen is the tiled family room which looks out through sliding doors to the outdoor entertainment area and yard - great to keep an eye on the kids. The outdoor entertainment area is conveniently all weather (especially for weather like we’ve been having), paved and vast in size. Past the retainer wall is the backyard which could easily fit a pool and already homes a cubby house for the youngsters. Heading further through the home will take you past the study, linen press and bedrooms one and two - both double size with ceiling fans and built-in robes. The bathroom consists of a shower, bath and vanity with a convenient separate toilet next door. Across the way is a good size laundry. Finally, the master bedroom is king size and cleverly designed with a wall inset for an entertainment system and beautiful bay window. But the clever part is where the carpet ends and tiles begin - the powder room. This area is quite large and flows on with no doors from the bedroom, with his and her vanity and the built-in robe behind. Attached to this is a separate toilet and shower. Don’t miss your chance to inspect this testament to country charm.

Owners’ grant rises FIRST-TIME buyers looking for a new home will have more choice when deciding on their purchase with changes to the First Home Owner Grant that came into effect at the start of the month. House-hunters are now able to buy newly constructed homes valued up to $750,000, and remain eligible for the First Home Owner Grant. “The previous grant cut-off was $650,000 but... the threshold’s being boosted by $100,000”, NSW Treasurer Andrew Constance said. “It means first-time buyers will have more options, and more

choice, when they take the property plunge. “We want to make it as easy as possible for first home buyers to get into the market, while we boost incentives for the construction of new housing stock.” As part of the NSW Government’s 2014-15 Budget, there are also large investments in local building projects that will unlock land for new housing supply. A total of $83 million has been committed to the Housing Acceleration Fund which will enable faster land release in Sydney’s south west growth centre. “While giving first-time buyers

more flexibility, we’re also increasing housing supply,” Mr Constance said. The latest figures show the number of grants has increased significantly over the past financial year. First Home Owner Grants for new homes are 46 per cent higher in the five months to May 2014, compared to the same period the year before. New data from the Housing Industry Association also shows the outlook for the home building sector is positive, with new house sales up 15.6 per cent in the three months to May 2014 compared with the three months to May last year.

First-time home buyers will welcome new changes to the first home buyers grant, giving them scope to aim higher.

Pick up a bargain in regional areas WHILE media attention focuses on the increasing number of million-dollar suburbs in Melbourne, especially those very close to the Melbourne CBD, in many parts of regional Victoria there are still great home bargains to be had. The REIV’s latest median house price data across Victoria, released in the past fortnight, shows that in some parts of the state it is even possible to buy a home for less than $50,000. For first home buyers on a tight budget or those struggling to afford the home they want, this is welcome news. Even if the location is not the buyers’ first preference, buying in a new town may

ENZO RAIMONDO CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria

provide the opportunity for a new start. It can also mean the chance to get a foothold on the property ladder with a buy-to-rent purchase for those lacking the funds to buy in their preferred area. Once on that rung, the property owners will, in future years, be able to use this asset to move further up the market. Ararat had one of the state’s lowest June quarter medians at $190,000. And with price growth of 26.7 per cent over the past 12 months it seems many buyers are realising just what a great opportunity this is. There were bargains to be had in the thriving regional centre of Horsham,

with a June quarter median of $185,000, in the Pyrenees with $195,000 and the Central Goldfields with a median of $220,000 over the three months. But it is the lowest 25 per cent of sales over the quarter which give an indication of just what bargains there are out there. For example, in some small towns with fewer than 30 sales over the past 12 months buyers could snap up a home for less than $50,000. In Donald the lower quartile median was just $47,000 while in Warracknabeal it was $88,500. Of course, it is possible these homes may not be in prime condition.

But for those with time and DIY skills such a purchase can bring the chance to add value to an affordable property, substantially increasing the owner’s equity. Buyers adding to an investment portfolio or those for whom a house in Melbourne or in key regional centres such as Geelong or Bendigo was out of the question, saw an opportunity and took it. And, the best news is, there are more of them out there. For a full list of regional cities and towns and their latest quarterly medians, visit: www.reiv.com.au/regionalmedians.

HOUSE prices continued to increase in most Victorian regional centres, according to quarterly data released by the REIV today. REIV chief executive officer Enzo Raimondo said the median house price across regional Victoria reached $327,000 in the three months to 30 June 2014. This represents an increase of 0.8 per cent on the previous quarter, Mr Raimondo said. While that growth was slower than the previous quarter - when 1.3 per cent growth was recorded - the increase took the state’s year-on-year house price increase to 4.1 per cent for regional Victoria. “In key regional centres there were price increases in the June quarter, to cap off a solid year for our major regional cities,” Mr Raimondo said. In the City of Greater Bendigo the median price was up 1.5 per cent for the June quarter to $335,000 - an annual change of 7.9 per cent reflecting demand for homes driven by the New Bendigo Hospital project. The increase in the City of Greater Geelong was 0.2 per cent but the annual change was a healthy 6.7 per cent, Mr Raimondo said. There was a 0.3 per cent increase in the City of Ballarat with an annual change of 3.9 per cent. In the city of Shepparton growth for the quarter was a healthy 3.1 per cent, an annual change of 6 per cent. And in Benalla, the median was up by 5.3 per cent for the quarter. Mr Raimondo said that areas sought by those looking for a tree change lifestyle yet within commuting distance of Melbourne fared well in the June quarter. “For example, the Colac-Otway region showed June quarter growth of 8.3 per cent and 17.2 per cent annual change, although there were fewer than 30 sales recorded during that 12 months,” he said. In other areas where the data showed a price decrease there were fewer than 50 sales recorded for the past 12 months so there were insufficient sales to consider this definitive, he said.

They need to clone this one THIS property went under offer at the full price only four and a half hours after being listed. The buyers are rapt they have a very livable home on a big block, and it’s oozing with potential in an awesome location. The agent (who is also the vendor) needs many more similar properties due to the overwhelming interest from serious buyers who are ready to act now. Do they make carbon paper big enough to fit house and land?

Local Sport War on wheels By KRYSTEN MANUEL

THE Murray River Derby Dames (MRDD) are gearing up for another bloody battle in just over a months time. On 6 September the Dames will face Melbourne team, the WestSide Derby Dollz. Although the Dames haven’t yet faced them, the Dollz aren’t exactly an unknown quantity. “We’ve played with them when they’ve helped fill numbers for our team,” MRDD coach Renae Schilg said. “This year they’re playing really well, it will be a fun game.” The Dames will be calling in some guest players for the event, which will be held at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre. Last weekend marked the first scrimmage in preparation for the September bout. “A scrimmage is a practice game for roller derby,” Schilg said. “We got together as many skaters as we could. They took on other roles, not just skating but officiating and other things. We’ll probably have another five or so before we meet WestSide.” For more information, watch the MRDD Facebook page in coming weeks.

Teen cyclist Ryan Allan is king of the road By KRYSTEN MANUEL WODONGA cyclist Ryan Allan dominated the 28th annual John Woodman Memorial race on Sunday, winning the titles of first junior, first local and first rider across the line. At only 18 years old, Allen is the fourth local to win the title, doing so with a time of 3:10:5 hours and Pedalling against 120 competitors, including Olympian Steven Fairless. The 136-kilometre handicap began in Wagga, following through to Albury, with riders released in four groups according to proven ability. The calibre of rider was very diverse, with front markers granted nearly a 30-minute headstart on the race favourites. For the girls, the first female across the line was Albury woman Sophie McKay.

Wednesday, 30 July, 2014 Page 25

The 28th annual John Woodman Memorial Race turned up some surprising results.

IT WAS a disappointing end to the North East Bushrangers inaugural season, as both sides fell to fired-up Coburg Giants sides. Looking to carry on their strong end of season form, the Lady Bushrangers were hoping to claim another big scalp to finish the season. It was a tight contest to start the game, that would see the Giants take a slim five-point lead into the half-time break. The third quarter would prove to be a disaster for the Lady Bushrangers, as the Giants turned up the pressure on both ends of the court to extend the lead to 24 points on the back of a 32-to-13point quarter. The Giants didn’t let up in the fourth, as they extended their lead to 32 by the final siren as they secured a 10371 victory over the Lady Bushrangers. Rachel Jeffery was a stand out for a Lady Bushrangers side that struggled to finish on the offensive end, with 27 points and 8 rebounds. Holly Bawden was a solid contributor with 10 points and 8 rebounds, while Stacey Browne chipped in with 11 points. The Lady Bushrangers finish the season with a five win and 13 loss record that was good enough for seventh on the ladder. The Men’s Bushrangers had a disappointing finish, as they fell to the Coburg Giants 92-74. The Giants came out firing in the first quarter as they managed to settle into the flow of the game and build a comfortable 10-point lead at the first break. The Bushrangers would start to hit their straps in the second quarter as they began to chip away at the Giants’ lead, but a late rally saw the Bushrangers head to the main break down 13. Out of the main break, the Bushrangers would continue to struggle as the Giants pushed their lead out to 20, with the visitor’s looking in disarray. However an inspired final two minutes of the quarter would see Dylan Webb step up and lead the Bushrangers 10-0 scoring run and bring the margin back to a gettable 10 points. Brimming with confidence, the Bushrangers kept charging and managed to reduce the margin to four points before the Giants steadied the ship. In disappointing fashion, the Bushrangers began to go away from everything that had worked for them over the past month and saw their chances of victory disappear, as Coburg put the final nail in the coffin. Josh McKay led the way for the Bushrangers with 18 points and nine rebounds. He was well supported by Webb, who despite battling foul trouble managed 17 points and seven rebounds in just 23 minutes of court time. Jon Lindhe struggled from the field, but finished with 13 points. The Bushrangers finish the season with a six win and 14 loss record, which was good enough for ninth on the ladder. Attention now turns to the Bushrangers’ presentation night to be held on Friday night.

Plan behind upset win Simon

Says with SIMON CORR LAVINGTON’S win over premiership favourite Albury last Saturday at the Lavington Sports Ground has not only breathed a bit of fresh air into the competition but perhaps put equalisation talks on hold for a week or two. Sure Lavington was clearly one of three clubs at the commencement of the season that loomed large as a Premiership contender, but it has been Yarrawonga and Albury that have featured prominently in all discussions surrounding an uneven competition. Lavington’s emergence has not been overnight and is a direct result of some great long-term planning and direction, the retention and development of the club’s very own local talent and perhaps more important than all, a game plan that is universally followed to a tee. I am obviously not privy to the financial rewards anyone from the Panthers are rewarded with to play out their role in the team, nor am I for any of the other Ovens and Murray clubs, but I can say with the utmost confidence that the almighty dollar is not the reason why the Panthers have become a real force. We happily live in a democratic society, and as a result nothing in our lives is identical or totally equal and that largely is a result of our own actions. We are, however, fortunate enough to be able to control our own destiny and what the Panthers have done is a classic example of that. Let the Panthers achievements be a good example to all football clubs and not just those in the Ovens and Murray. Invest in and support your juniors by ensuring they are influenced by those with vast football experience. Have an agreed long-term plan and stick to it, rather than search for a quick-fix solution. Cultivate a culture that is intolerant of those going outside team plans and rules and make no exceptions for anyone. Reward and respect loyalty. Recruit to address specific deficiencies not just to strengthen an entire list.

This is no guaranteed recipe for success, but I am confident if more clubs adopted a business-like plan they would not only find themselves moving closer to sustained success, but they will also find it far more gratifying when they arrived there. Lavington’s win over Albury was not the only result that grabbed the attention of the many so called O&M experts. Wangaratta upset their cross town rivals in the Wang Rovers and in doing so also kept their finals chances alive. Not many would have given the Magpies any hope at all after they could only manage a draw against the winless Wodonga the week earlier. However, the Magpies have given themselves a shot and their clash this Saturday against North Albury looms as a big one. The Hoppers were scintillating against a below par Wodonga Raiders, with their young brigade continuing to take all before them. Both teams will have a lot to play for but I think that the flamboyance and exuberance of the young Hoppers list will be too good for the Pies. Wang Rovers must pull themselves together with a shortened break to prepare for the reigning Premier in Yarrawonga. While all the talk has surrounded Lavington and Albury, you cannot but help thinking that the Pigeons have become the forgotten sleeping giant. Craig Ednie has returned to some of his career best form and the boys from down the river will use this game to catapult themselves back into contention. Should the Rovers pull of an upset, I believe it would guarantee themselves a spot in the finals. In other games, Wodonga will continue to chase down their first win for the year when it hosts the fourthplaced Corowa - Rutherglen. Albury will be looking to get back on the winners list in a big way when they meet Myrtleford at the Albury Sportsground and Lavington will remain in top spot with an encounter against the disappointing Wodonga Raiders.
