Futuristic $320m farming investment unveiled

1000 jobs for Geelong A PROPOSED $320 million sustainable vegetable farm at Avalon will create more than 1000 jobs for Geelong, according to its proponents. Sustainable Farms has proposed the project for a 150-hectare site on Old Melbourne Rd, near the Princes Fwy. The high-tech facility will feature the largest glasshouses in the Southern

Hemisphere, using renewable energy from recycling waste products. Sustainable Farms spokesperson Barry Dungey said the project needed State Government support to “fast track Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and planning approvals. “The consortium is ready to deliver jobs and economic growth for the Geelong community but we require the plan-

ning process for this development to be completed in a timely manner. “We are financially ready to start a detailed planning submission, have completed preliminary due diligence and are in detailed discussions with major retailers of fresh produce. “However, without commitments to likely planning approval timeframes, we cannot enter firm commitments with our customers to supply.

The consortium comprises energy and power generation specialist HRL Developments, waste recycling expert Mercer and Stokes and Werribee-based Coles vegetables supplier Fresh Select. Mr Dungey said the farm would be built in six stages from 2015 to 2021, eventually employing 1068 full-time professional, skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled employees.

SPEAKING of birds, a new grant for research into bird diseases that might cross over to humans has gone to Deakin Uni researchers and square in their sights is that controversial little ‘budgie’, the orangebellied parrot. Yep, almost half a million smackers to study psittacosis and beak and feather disease, which the endangered OBP is susceptible to – and which could make the flapper a threat to not just windfarms and petrochem plants but humans as well. In fact, “lethal is the word Deakin utilised as it spruiked the new research and the menace to humans. With only 30 or 40 in the wild, it’s ironic the birds most at risk are the 300 “insurance population at Healesville Sanctuary – from other birds there. Go figure.

A NEW painting of Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons is, er, ruffling feathers around his municipality. Artist Noreen Scott has depicted the usually mohawk-coiffured Lyons with a sulphur crest – and the rest of the cocky’s head as well. Social media circulation of the confronting artwork this week set off a round of squawking.

Labor ramps up Bay West promise

In brief

Port’s 3km pier option By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A LENGTHY offshore port terminal could overcome shallow water issues for a proposed Bay West container facility in Corio Bay’s outer-harbour, according to the Victorian state opposition. ALP shadow treasurer Tim Pallas floated the concept during a briefing to the Committee for Geelong in June. Mr Pallas told the briefing Bay West was “likely to have an island offshore berthline”, with a pier stretching as much as three kilometres into the bay. He said the design would enable Bay West to handle bulk trade as well as containers, an advantage over State

Government’s plan to develop the facility at Hastings. “Hastings is limited as a long-term option because of this capacity constraint.” Mr Pallas said Bay West could handle at least 10 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent) containers, compared to a capacity of nine million at Hastings. Bay West also offered construction savings of as much as $2 billion. Mr Pallas said the offshore berths offered advantages for transport and dredging. Providing Hastings with access to standard-gauge rail would cost “in the order of hundreds of millions of dol-

lars” because of its greater distance from key freight and warehousing locations. Mr Pallas said Bay West had access to the Princes Fwy, standardgauge and interstate rail links and was “potentially less complex to connect rail to dock with an island terminal at Bay West”. Mr Pallas said the overall impact on the supply chain was positive for Bay West and negative for Hastings, increasing the cost per container up to $400. Bay West would be a “nationally significant investment” for Geelong, he said. “A Bay West port has the potential

to provide a massive economic and jobs benefit for the Geelong region.” Ports Minister David Hodgett called the idea “ludicrous”, saying it demonstrated the hopelessness of Labor’s plan. Bay West would need “monumental dredging” because it was earmarked for a shallow part of the bay. “To build a port anywhere in the bay the heads would need to be blasted to widen and deepen the entrance to fit ships through. This could cause untold impact to the local environment. “Hastings is an already-working, deep-water port and is the only realistic option for Victoria’s next international container port.”

Bikie raids A 50-YEAR-OLD North Geelong man has been bailed on a charge of failing to appear before court after a series of bikie-related police raids this week. Police swooped on a Rebels bikie clubhouse in North Geelong and premises in Whittington on Tuesday morning as part of the raids, which also targeted bikies in Melbourne.

Storages surging THE REGION’s water storages have surged back over 80 per cent capacity after 41mm of rain in the past week. Barwon Water recorded the storages at 80.3 per cent on Wednesday, almost 11 per cent higher than the same time last year.

Agency call THE AFL should scrap free-agency rules allowing veteran players to walk out on their clubs for better offers, according to Cats coach Chris Scott. He called free agency “distasteful” despite recent reports of Geelong trying to wrest star defender James Frawley from Melbourne.

Drysdale promise A $3 MILLION upgrade of Drysdale Primary School is a Labor state pre-election promise, opposition deputy leader James Merlino has announced. Mr Merlino said the money would replace 17 “tired” portable classrooms with new permanent buildings and also deliver other refurbishments.

Chinese agreement A CHINESE province’s new agreement with Geelong provides the city with an opportunity for foreign investment, Premier Denis Napthine has announced. Mr Napthine witnessed representatives of Jiangsu and Geelong sign a memorandum of understanding, which he said would “promote bilateral investment in advanced manufacturing services, tourism and agriculture”.

Trucks ‘fantastic’ FOOD Truck Fridays attracted 7800 visitors to lunch in central Geelong over three days, according to Mayor Darryn Lyons. He declared that the visiting trucks provided a “fantastic result” for city centre traders who enjoyed extra business from the lunchtime visitors.

Cancer boost

City’s first autism centre a ‘godsend’ for parents By EMILY IANNELLO A “GODSEND” for families with autistic children has opened in Geelong. The city’s first Little Learners centre for pre-schoolers provides 20plus hours a week of early-intervention services. A mother, who did not want to be identified, said the program had “changed our lives for the better”. “I was previously travelling to Melbourne up and back twice a day

to send my son to a Melbourne centre,” she said. “It has absolutely changed our lives. I don’t know what I would have done without it. “My son has started talking, his communication skills have just flourished. “Before he wasn’t doing anything constructive but now he’s doing puzzles and he can understand so much more of what we’re saying.

“The intensity is so hard to find. No-one else in Geelong offers it.” Little Learners director Karen McKinnon said the program’s applied behaviour analysis (ABA) model was based on learning theory. Students attended four days a week, learning in one-on-one and group sessions. The response to the new centre in Bellerine St had been “really positive”, Ms McKinnon said.

“Families are really happy to see an ABA provider in Geelong but they’re still getting their head around the NDIS and what services we can access.” Ms McKinnon said autism rates were a “growing concern”. “There used to be just one or two autistic children in every school but now we’re more likely to see one or two in every classroom. Many other local agencies are now referring parents and their children to the centre.”

That saved the customer a lot of money instead of having me sitting and watching it download.” Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said Federal Government had approved NBNCo’s recommendation to leverage existing infrastructure. “The NBN strategic review recommended upgrading existing HFC cable networks to deliver download speeds of up to 300mbps and uploads of up to 100mbps. It is too early to say for sure but it’s possible the NBN could utilise the existing HFC network to help deliver the NBN to Geelong.” Ms Henderson said an updated rollout plan would be released later this year.

GEELONG’S hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) network could become part of a local NBN rollout. Neighbourhood Cable rolled out the high-speed HFC internet network over 10 years ago before it was sold to TransAct and then to iiNet. Wayne Bouffler, iiNet’s cable network manager, said he anticipated negotiations with NBNco about incorporating Geelong’s HFC network were “imminent”. “NBNCo has already announced it will use HFC networks as part of its Australia-wide rollout,” Mr Bouffler said. “NBNco is going to talk to Telstra and Optus about their HFC networks and ours is the same, so I’d say those discussions would be imminent. “There’s no point in duplicat-

ing networks that achieve comparable speeds.” Mr Bouffler said Geelong’s HFC network delivered broadband services as fast as 100 megabits a second to more than 50,000 premises. “The HFC network bypasses local bottlenecks because it doesn’t go through the telephone exchanges.” The Independent recently reported on significant broadband blackspots around Geelong. Telstra has increased the number of ports available to upgrade several exchanges. HFC customer Rob Dorris said he took up the option because of its higher speed for his Power Up Computing, which services business and residential customers from his North Geelong home. “Speed is the biggest advantage. Doyle backs bid for $30m pier GEELONG’S Yarra St pier plans have won powerful backing from number-one Cats ticket-holder, Melbourne lord mayor and former Liberal state leader Robert Doyle. The $30 million-plus proposal, linchpin of City Hall plans to dramatically boost cruise ship tourism to Geelong, has become a hot issue in recent weeks

as Mayor Darryn Lyons ramps up his campaign to secure funding as the state election looms. Cr Doyle, a friend of Cr Lyons, said Lloyds and Access Economics had identified a purpose-built facility as essential to boosting cruise ship business in Geelong rather than revamping an old structure such as Cunningham Pier. “The cruise ship business is really big

business,” Cr Doyle told the Independent. “When a cruise ship pulls into Melbourne we garner $1 million on shopping during stopovers but there’s also $1 million in provisioning to send it on its next journey. “Wouldn’t it be a wonderful thing for a cruise ship to be not just flooding Geelong with visitors but also leaving port with Geelong wine, Geelong food,

Geelong produce and Geelong gifts? It would be a huge boost to the city’s economy every time one of those ships docks.” Cr Doyle said Melbourne’s absence of a purpose-built pier meant it was failing to fully capitalise on visiting cruise ships. “We do worse than Sydney and Queensland because our pier is not purpose-built. In New South Wales, cruise

From page 1 Plans included additional glasshouses for hydroponic lettuce production, a seed nursery, water storages and an energy centre with two 60-megawatt boilers to run the hydroponic operations. Other operations would include processed timber recycling, plaster and gypsum sorting and storage, metal sorting and a concrete and brick crushing facility. “Significant quantities of waste timber exist within the construction and demolition industries, with the majority of this currently going to landfill,” Mr Dungey said. “When in full production, Sustainable Farms will be able to process 220,000 tonnes of timber a year through its recycling capacity, reducing waste to landfill. “From this, the project will have an annual 120MWh energy production facility using renewable energy with a near zero-carbon footprint. “Potash produced as a bi-product will also be utilised to enrich local market gardener’s soils.” Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons congratulated the consortium on its decision to invest in Geelong. “This is a great endorsement of Geelong and our ideal proximity to road, rail and sea transport, providing easy access to interstate and export markets. “I wholeheartedly support the fast-tracking of this development to enable Sustainable Farms to be operational in 2015. “This is a massive development that’s totally in line with Geelong’s future as a smart 21st Century city. Sustainable Farms will become one of Geelong’s major employers creating 1068 jobs and injecting $160 million into the local economy each year by 2021.”

By NOEL MURPHY FAUX fur takes a new turn in a wildlife hide exhibition being prepared at Geelong’s National Wool Museum. Artist Ruth Marshall has replicated a striking collection of brilliantly spotted, striped and colourful wildlife skins due to go on display next week. Tigers, jaguars, leopards and thylacines, numbats, bandicoot, striped possums and endangered species such as Leadbeater’s possum and tiger quolls are just some of the species Marshall has hand-knitted, stitched and sewn. Author of Vanished into Stitches, Marshall is an Australian-born artist whose distinctive work is sourced from museum and zoo research into exotic, extinct and endangered animals. Her work provides a wide audience for scientific specimens rarely in the public eye. The museum said Marshall’s focus on the issue of species-decline “also reminds us of the intrinsic natural beauty that inspired us to covet these creatures in the first place”. The exhibition, with the same title as her book, includes a series of Aussie animals that Marshall studied at Melbourne Museum and reproduced as a one-of-a-kind textile work. The wool museum, in Moorabool St, hosts Vanished Into Stitches until December.

By NOEL MURPHY PROPERTY owners thinking about selling to developers as Geelong bulges at the edges need independent advice to avoid being exploited, a property insider has told the Independent. Prices offered to farmers and other land-owners could be as little as a third of their actual worth, former real estate agent Tony McManus said. “The risk is that if a property owner has a bit of dirt that’s in a growth corridor the value may not be apparent up front,” he said. “The risk is they’ll be seduced by a price offered by a developer but get screwed on the terms and conditions.” Mr McManus said previous perceptions of where the city’s boundaries were, such as the ring

AN emergency sandbagging operation has saved houses from seawater flooding during an “extreme storm” at Portarlington, according to City Hall. Ward councillor Lindsay Ellis said council workers rushed to Ramblers Rd after a confluence of weather and tide events began pushing water toward “a number of dwellings”. The sea advanced toward the houses’ boundaries through a break in dunes but the sandbags held the water back, he said. Resident Rod Needham said council’s response was “greatly appreciated”. Council erected a sand fence along the shoreline after the June storm to prevent beach erosion and protect nearby homes, he said.

road, were outdated amid Geelong’s fast growth. “The ring road actually opens a lot of opportunity on the other side and there are pockets all over Geelong where land-owners might be approached by developers,” the former Lara real estate agent said. Mr McManus cautioned owners considering selling to developers to beware of what might “look like a good price up front” if they failed to understand terms and conditions attached to the sale. “Today’s prices might be dragged out over a three or four-year contract that might be subject to rezoning or feasibility studies - conditions where the developer is taking the risk out of the deal.

“The worst one is probably just dragging it out over a period of time, like maybe subject to settlement when the rezoning comes through, which, if the rezoning’s say four years out, means what looks like a reasonable price today can eventually look really cheap. “I’ve seen a bit of that happen over the years.” Mr McManus urged prospective vendors to obtain independent advice about their land’s value, “probably by a sworn valuer”. “The bottom line is a developer won’t go up to a landholder and offer them a premium for the land. They’re more likely going to be offering a discount, so it’s really important for an independent third party to do an assessment on behalf of the land owner.”

Our mixed results in Glasgow By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG athletes at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow have enjoyed mixed fortunes. Netballers Tegan Caldwell and Madison Robinson are part of an undefeated Diamonds team, securing a semi-final as gold medal favourites. Geelong judoka Jake Benstead, 19, won bronze in the 73kg class in impressive fashion after narrowly losing his semi-final. Geelong boxer Kristy Harris made his-

tory as the first Australian woman boxer to compete at the Commonwealth Games. She won her first fight, defeating Christine Ongare of Kenya in the women’s flyweight division. Harris next fights Mandy Bujold of Canada in the quarter finals, hoping to reach the medal rounds this Friday and Saturday. Little River’s Mark Anthony narrowly missed out on a medal in Glasgow competing in the 90kg judo division. The 24-year-old made it through to the bronze medal bout but lost to Scot-

land’s Anthony Burns by two throws to one. Corio’s Damien Birkinhead claimed fifth in the men’s shot put final, heaving 19.59m, two metres off the winner. Husband-and-wife shooting duo Russell and Lauryn Mark ended their campaigns without medals. Lauryn qualified for the women’s skeet semi-finals but finished sixth while Russell came 10th in the double trap, missing out of the semifinal. Ocean Grove lawn bowler Matthew Flapper was part of the men’s trios,

losing a bronze medal match to Wales 13-16. But Flapper is also part of the men’s fours team striving for golden glory in Glasgow after winning its two preliminary matches. Jess Gulli runs her heats in the 4x400m relays on Saturday as the athletics program gears up. Wheelchair athlete Richard Coleman opened his account on Tuesday night in the men’s 1500m T54 round-one heat, grabbing third place and automatically advancing to the final.

Scandal follows Jack’s off to Youth Olympics with his inherited talent By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN de Rossi’s ‘baby’ By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG’S Portia de Rossi is set to appear in the next series of US TV series Scandal next month – and could become a mum. The strife-torn star of Arrested Development and Ally McBeal and wife of chat-show superstar Ellen DeGeneres spent a month in rehab in May after a torrid domestic row. The pair are now reported to be investigating having a surrogate baby after Portia contacted a Californian surrogate-parenting centre for information. CelebrityDirtyLaundry reported that de Rossi and DeGeneres decided to go ahead with “what is commonly referred to as a Band-Aid baby, meaning the couple hopes that a child will bring them closer together”. Buzzfeed reported that de Rossi was in Scandal’s season four but did not detail her role. She has weathered a major media storm in recent months, spending time in the Malibu rehab centre for drugs and alcohol treatment after an “ugly fight” with DeGeneres. Long-standing liver cirrhosis and osteoporosis problems were revealed and claims of her wife cheating while she was in rehab have coloured already-lurid tabloids and websites. De Rossi was also reported to have taped arguments with DeGeneres, who flew into a rage after discovering the recordings, checking her partner’s emails for any sign the fights had gone to the media.

FAST TRACK: Geelong triathlete Jack Van Stekelenburg is on his way to the Youth Olympics in China. Picture: ANNE MARIE ANDERSON

GEELONG triathlete Jack Van Stekelenburg has made his first Australian representative team, selected to compete at a Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China. The 17-year-old is proving he has inherited father John’s athletic genes, with both covering a variety of sports backgrounds. John was a world champion water-skier as well as competing internationally in triathlons and ironman events. Jack came to triathlon from a surf lifesaving and cross-country running background. “I’ve definitely inherited a lot from dad. I’m training with him a lot as well; he pushes me on the bike. He’s extremely competitive – it’s amazing how good he really is,” he said. Jack, a Melbourne Grammar boarder, landed the team spot by accident – literally. The triathlete originally selected to go to the Youth Olympics broke his collarbone three weeks ago. “It’s an unfortunate way to get your first crack at an Australian team. But it’s unreal that I’ve been given an opportunity like this, so I’ll do my best.” Jack said he had to escalate his training quickly given the short warning, heading to Queensland for a training camp last weekend. “I’d been backing off my training, although I was doing the cross-country season.” Geelong hammer thrower Ned Weatherly will also compete at the games, from 16 to 28 August.

Redundancies caution up status of the manufacturing sector’s workplace victims but, with some of their packages set to be in the rage of $200,000, many are expected to splash out at least a little. Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief executive officer Bernadette Uzelac expected redundant workers to be careful with their money. “Quite a number of people will be cautious - perhaps they may well buy that suit or pay off some of that mortgage,” she said. “But in the main most people will

New charity services needy in city’s ‘affluent’ south

GEELONG’S newest charity has established in the city’s apparently-affluent southern suburbs but its founders say disadvantage disregards postcodes. Chair of the non-profit 3216 Connect, Clinton Berends, said poverty, disability and homelessness blighted the area the same as other suburbs. “We’re local people concerned about the wellbeing of people in our neighbourhood, so we’ve set up this charity to bring relief to people particularly in postcode 3216.” Mr Berends said 3216 Connect had opened an op shop in Dendle St, Grovedale, to raise funds for its activities. The charity was established under the auspices of South Barwon Christian Reformed Church, of which Mr Berends is the pastor. “We wanted to connect and serve the local community better; to have a presence and place in community. “We’re discovering through the op shop that a lot of people with disadvantage are from the Grovedale and Marshall area. Being in this postcode can sometimes hide some issues.” Mr Berends said 3216 Connect was keen to build relationships with other charities, allocating 25 per cent of its fundraising to support other organisations. He said 20 per cent was earmarked for international assistance, with an orphanage in the Philippines the first project to be supported.

Letters IN A RECENT letter to the mayor of Geelong I suggested that the money for the proposed floating Christmas tree on Corio Bay would be better spent for the maintenance of our streets. They are in desperate need of repair. The many potholes are playing havoc with the suspensions of our motor cars. In his letter of reply he outlined to me his fanciful vision how the Christmas tree would support local tourism and retail sectors in Geelong. He made the hypothetical assumption that the tree would attract 7500 visitors each week while it was installed and that this would equate to $18 million dollars of economic investment into Geelong. These were fanciful predictions based on groundless assumptions. Does he think this imaginary influx of tourism will continue into the future once the shine of the novelty has worn off? In conclusion, he wrote, and I quote: “We need to think big, bold and fantastically different”. The Oxford dictionary defines fantastic as extravagantly fanciful, eccentric and grotesque. The related word fantasy is defined as imageinventing and whimsical speculation.

I welcome the idea of a Christmas tree in a public place but does it have to be a million-plus-dollar edifice on water, not including the constantly recurring cost of dismantling and re-erection each year? Werner Schuhmann Newtown

Offended by jobless SO MAYOR Darryn Lyons’ sensitivities were allegedly “offended” during the mayoral election campaign last year by comments authorised by a former mayor (Independent, 25 August). And Cr Lyons has reportedly seen fit to take legal action for alleged defamation during his bid for public office. If his court action is successful it may well have adverse implications for the democratic process itself, specifically freedom of speech and expression. It is also hard to believe there are not more important matters for Cr Lyons to attend to, including developing policies to reduce the high level of unemployment among the 16-to-25-year-old demographic in this city. Power of trouble DRILLING for coal seam, tight and shale gas is a threat to our water, soils, forests, health and food production. Strangely, the on-land gas field industry has seemingly persuaded Australia’s frozen vegetable industry that it can save money by using what the Victorian Government would like referred to as “natural gas”. The gas field industry is trying to make industries and food processors believe that gas produced on land will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this it is aided by the attitude of the coalition, which recently announced it wants to include gas as a socalled renewable source of energy despite the fact fracking to obtain the gas releases methane. Simplot says it is choosing Lakes Oil gas for food processing because of its “low C02 emissions”. But the methane emitted from natural gas drilling and fracking is a much more powerful greenhouse gas than C02 and the industry has already polluted aquifers and soils in Australia and overseas. As the land-based gas industry is a threat to food

security in Australia, if Simplot gets energy from onland gas mining it might be signing up for a boycott of frozen vegetables produced by Leggo’s, Edgell, Birds Eye, John West and Chiko. Simplot should consider installing wind and solar power for its energy supplies and saving energy with methods including co-generation and tri-generation. A genuine environmentally aware decision would not only save you money in the end but would gain the support of shoppers. Gillian Blair Sustainable Agriculture and Communities Alliance secretary

Acidification denial ALAN Baron (Letters, 18 July) kindly attempted to answer my question why increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) would not cause Earth’s greenhouse effect to run faster and so cause the planet to warm. Although it was difficult to understand his answer and I don’t think he has properly addressed the question, I note that he persists with the myth that the planet hasn’t warmed in the past 17 years. He should know that during this time the oceans have continually warmed or does he not think it’s a problem worth mentioning? I note also he did not mention the oceans were also acidifying under increased CO2. Logically, that should be enough for a climate sceptic to not bother so much with climate arguments when we see our oceans’ ecosystems now also threatened. Perhaps he is also an ocean acidification denier. No doubt we will shortly find out. Ray Black Belmont

Business celebrated GEELONG has had its fair share of tough times and as we continue to transform our local economy it is opportune to reflect on some of the positive stories that often don’t make the headlines. The recent 2014 Powercor Geelong Business Excellence Awards presentation dinner, organised by the Geelong Chamber of Commerce with the support of many local sponsors and a dedicated team of voluntary judges, attracted a record field of entrants from across a wide range of industry sectors. A full house turned out at The Pier on a cold, winter’s night in Geelong to celebrate and acknowledge business excellence in our region in true Logies style. Despite the deep chill outside an atmosphere of warmth and goodwill inside was palpable. During a time of much uncertainty in our region, our business community took time out to celebrate and recognise the energy, dedication, passion and talent that drives our local economy, helps grow jobs and contributes in so many ways to our community. It is often the journey and not the destination that is so important and the wards help to showcase the many exemplary local businesses that are the backbone of our economy and which provide opportunities for the creation of new jobs today and into the future. Congratulations to all that took the journey in 2014 and we look forward to a bigger and moreexciting 2015 when we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the longest-continuously-running business awards in Australia. Bernadette Uzelac Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief executive officer

Let’s talk about changes to aged care. Aged care should be decided by the person who knows you best – you. That’s why aged care changes from 1 July 2014 give you more choice, more control and more of the services you might need to help you stay independent. New financing arrangements also start. So if you’re getting older and need help, or if you’re caring for someone who does, call My Aged Care or visit the website to find out what you need to know to start planning and talking about aged care with your family and loved ones.

Because the sooner we all start talking about aged care and planning it, the beter the outcome for you and your family. For personalised assistance, talk to a real person on 1800 200 422* or visit myagedcare.gov.au *1800 calls are free from land lines; calls from mobile phones may be charged.

VICTORIA Walks and blindness advocates are alarmed that VicRoads’ new cycling road rules survey included options for more cyclists on footpaths. Walking and cycling are not a good mix for our most-vulnerable walkers. In a survey of 1128 seniors, 39 per cent said bikes on shared paths were a constraint to their walking. A Vision Australia study of walkers with vision impairment found 24 per cent of collisions and near collisions were with cyclists. Cyclists do not necessarily slow down when they share a path with pedestrians. A New South Wales study found that the average speed of cyclists on footpaths was 21km/h, the same speed as on local roads. Cycling advocates want to increase the age for footpath cycling from 12 to 16 years. Letting teenagers ride on footpaths might make some parents feel better but it won’t make their kids safer. International studies show that cyclists have a 1.8 to 16-times higher risk of injury on footpaths than on roads. From a motorist perspective, imagine a 15-yearold racing along a footpath while someone is backing out of their driveway. What driver wants to be responsible for a teenager lying seriously injured on a footpath? Our footpaths are critical for many seniors, children, families and the disabled to get around. It is paramount that people are safe and feel safe when walking without having to worry about being hit by a cyclist. Dr Ben Rossiter Victoria Walks executive officer

Child abduction fears at Drysdale By NOEL MURPHY CHILD abduction fears have emerged at Drysdale after reports of a man trying to entice children into his van. Online community page Leopold this week warned of a man wearing glasses and an orange jacket asking a young

boy to get into the van. “The child rode home as fast as he could but the man in the van followed him,” the site reported. “The guy in the van finally drove off just before the kid got home.” In another incident a white

van was reported “trying to pick up a girl after school outside the Drysdale pub a few weeks ago”. The page administrator warned parents to tell their children, especially if they walked or rode home alone. Police and local schools were unaware of the reports.

A FAIR PAY DEAL FOR PARAMEDICS Victoria’s paramedics are highly skilled professionals who dedicate their lives to serving the community and helping out in tough times. Ambulance Victoria and Victorian Government representatives have been negotiating with the ambulance union over a new pay deal for paramedics since August 2012. To break the deadlock, the Victorian Government has agreed with Ambulance Victoria to make a new pay offer to paramedics.

This new offer is fair and reasonable. It includes: • a sign-on payment of $3000 for full-time paramedics (pro rata for part-timers and new employees) – this is twice as much as the previous offer • an immediate 6% wage increase • an increase of 3% in July 2015 and a further 3% in July 2016 – a 12% increase in total. Paramedics may also receive pay increases arising from the Fair Work Commission’s arbitration of their work value claim. Paramedics existing terms and conditions will be retained, so that they continue to receive: • 10 weeks paid leave annually • 10 weeks paid parental leave • 6 months long service leave after 15 years service • tax exempt benefits of up to $9000 a year. Victorian paramedics will still be the only paramedics in Australia to have access to guaranteed superannuation benefits via a defined benefit superannuation scheme, including a lump-sum option after 30 years of service. These increases will mean an ALS Year 6 paramedic can receive a total package of more than $110,000 a year (including rolled-in-rate, built-in overtime, FBT exempt benefits and guaranteed superannuation benefits – but not additional overtime). In addition, paramedics will receive the $3,000 sign-on payment. The Victorian Government is continuing to invest in ambulance services, with funding provided for an additional 539 full-time equivalent ambulance officers. This new pay offer gives paramedics the salary increase they deserve, maintains the generous terms and conditions they enjoy today and recognises the importance of the job they do protecting and saving lives. TJAPWURRUNG is no longer spoken in Neil Murray’s native hometown but it is sung. Given his love and respect for Aboriginal culture, Murray thought it appropriate to bring the language to life again – this time through song. Singing from the heart of the country, Murray will introduce his new album, Bring Thunder & Rain, to Torquay this weekend. The contemporary musician has long -standing links with Aboriginal music. In the 1980s he began a 20-year stint playing with Aboriginal rock group Warumpi Band, pushing contemporary indigenous music into mainstream Australia. In 1995 he received an APRA song of the year award for writing My Island Home, a hit for indigenous singer Christine Anu. Since beginning his solo career in 1989, Murray has released 12 albums. Murray said his experiences with Aborigines inspired Bring Thunder & Rain, which strived to tell eloquent and inspirational stories of Australia. “I did the album over a long period of time. I had about 22 songs demoed and (producer) Craig Pilkington and I selected the 11 strongest ones. “I wouldn’t be a straight country artist. There’s some gospel, rock and folk songs on there, too.” Murray sung track six, Malamia (Long Ago) in Tjapwurrung. “The language is undergoing research,” he said. Murray hoped his songs could inspire people to undertake research and

I think it’s important to do that to make our own cultural identity strong. “I always had a calling that I wanted to work, live and learn from Aboriginals. They know this country the best and I think we should pay our respects to them.” Glenelg-Hopkins Catchment Management Authority gave Murray an environmental award, highlighting his

love for the Australian environment. Adamant that other Australians should be open to learning from the Aboriginals, Murray insisted “they have a lot of inherent wisdom on how to live in this land”. Maintaining that Australia offered “more than meets the eye”, Murray believed the country’s cultural identity was underappreciated. “We need a deeper relationship with the country we live in.”

URBAN décor, LCD TVs, great coffee and mouth-watering food new Café VerX has something for everyone. Manager Billy had been in multiple businesses before opening the café. “I enjoy it a lot because I like dealing with people. I do a lot of the cooking myself. “From a sausage roll to a Turkish adana meal, we’ve got the verx,” Billy quips. “This place is known as a kebab place, so we’ve added extra, more flavoursome Turkish-style meals.” While maintaining its Turkish

roots, the café also offers mainstream meals. “We have food here for people on-the-run - pies, pasties, focaccias – and for people who have time to sit down and enjoy a meal.” Billy has also introduced his own burger, which is “big, juicy with lots of flavour.” “We’re also doing shish kebabs served with a homemade traditional Turkish rice and side salad.” Café VerX serves arguably the cheapest coffee on the street, with medium sizes for $3.50 and larges $3.90.

In a large casserole dish layer two cups rhubarb. Sprinkle over 1/4 cup sugar, 1/2 packet jelly crystal, 1/2 packet cake mix, 1/2 cup water. Repeat with remaining ingredients ending with cake mix. Melt butter and pour over cake mix. Bake at 180 degrees for about one hour. Colleen Paton, Grovedale

Have you had your skin checked lately? $30 could save your life

$30 skin check ‘can save life’ MOST people are aware of melanoma, a deadly skin cancer, but few know of more-common nonmelanoma skin cancers. They still require treatment and are best treated early to prevent disfigurement or more-serious health consequences. Sunspots are a clinical condition produced by extended exposure to sunlight or sunburn and can lead to non-melanoma skin cancer if untreated. They are small, scaly spots that begin under the surface of the skin and emerge like rough, scaly patches. Plastic surgeon and Australian Skin Face Body Clinics founder Ian Holten warns that at least two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. “I recommend people have a full body skin check every year.

Skin cancer checks, diagnosis and treatment. Make an appointment TODAY No referral necessary

A skin check is simple and takes 20 minutes. It’s just one of those things you need to do,” he said. Sun spots can be difficult to diagnose and therefore can often go unnoticed. “You should seek advice from a doctor trained in skin checks if

ALTHOUGH some people think only children get tooth decay, we’re all at risk our whole lives. But a healthy oral care routine and making smart food choices can lower the risk of tooth decay. Tooth decay damages and breaks down the outer and middle layers and centre of teeth. The more layers affected, the worse the damage. It’s much simpler and more affordable to prevent rather than repair decay. Untreated decay can lead to pain, loss of teeth and even loss of confidence. Tooth decay is caused by bacteria in the mouth that feeds on the

Dr Rashi Gupta at Norlane Dental Surgery. sugars found in foods and drinks. The bacteria produce acids that attack the teeth, potentially causing decay and eventually a cavity. Decay often occurs between the teeth and in the hard-to-clean grooves of back teeth where bits of food collect. Decay also can form at the tooth root and go below the gum-line.

Decay can be prevented by brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, avoiding frequent sipping and snacking on sugary foods and drinks and regular dentist visits. Treatment depends on how early decay is caught. Before cavities form, fluoride treatments might solve the problem. If you have a cavity, you’ll need a filling. A large cavity might need a crown to replace the decayed part of the tooth. If the centre layer of the tooth is involved, root canal treatment might be the last option. A badly damaged tooth might have to be pulled. Your dentist will discuss options and plan the best way to get your mouth healthy again.

They can occur on parts of the body not usually exposed to the Sun, such as between toes, under toenails and on the soles of the feet.” Australian Skin Face Body has a team of doctors experienced in skin checks, costing only $30 after the Medicare rebate. Located at 50 Western Beach Rd, Geelong, the clinic has ample car parking out back. Hair removal deals GEELONG Laser and Electrolysis Clinic is celebrating its first birthday throughout August with savings on hair-removal treatments. The special prices for July will be locked in for all future treatments, saving clients having to pay upfront for further laser hair removal. Now is the perfect time to start the treatments to be ready for a hair-free summer. The Clinic’s spacious, modern premises welcomes men and women for laser and electrolysis permanent hair removal. Owner Helen Hochreiter studied electrolysis – permanent hair removal – at Victoria University TAFE College and has many years of experience.

Hearing aids in Apple link HEARING aids that connect directly to iPhones, iPods and iPads are finally available. The technology transmits phone rings to the hearing-aid wearer who then accepts the call and hears the caller like anyone else would. In the case of iPods, the music goes straight to the hearing aid, so earbuds are not required. Users can even participate in Facetime communications to hear family and friends loud and clear.

Even navigation directions while driving can be transmitted directly from iPhones to the hearing aids. The made-for-iPhone technology needs no intermediary devices, such as remote controls or neckloops. Users have the ability to change the volume on their aids with their iPhone or add a free app to adjust even more. The technology also allows helpful features like a hearingaid tracker to find aids if still turned on or to supply a map

Electrolysis is the only permanent removal option for white, grey and red hair, while laser only works on dark hair. Electrolysis is also perfect for people with darker skin colour. Former colleague Lyn Waugh has joined Helen to help with the increased demand for laser hair removal. Lyn’s experience as an enrolled nurse and laser therapist will enhance the clinic’s knowledge about the medical conditions and medications that may be contra-indications for clients requiring hair removal. The Soprano Laser offers clients a more comfortable experience when treating large areas, with the in-motion, pain free, hair

‘Freebies’ fun

Free entertainment from bands such a Hip Cats provides surprise rewards for the loyal customers of Market Square Shopping Centre.

EDEN PARK Aged Care

GEELONG’S Market Square Shopping Centre is proud of its history, dating back to 1837. Market Square’s origins began as eight acres, or 2.9 hectares, of land reserved by Governor Sir George Gipps as a town square during initial surveying of Geelong. Soon named Market Square by local townspeople for its suitability as a produce market, the space has always been a popular meeting place in the heart of Geelong’s city centre. The existing Market Square

Shopping Centre was built in 1984 and 1985. Many loyal customers are still shopping at Market Square since the day it officially opened on 3 December 1985. As a way of recognising and celebrating many of its maturing loyal customers, Market Square introduced its Experience With Us campaign in July 2012. “Celebrating our mature-aged customers is also an important difference from our competitors,” says centre manager Sandy KellyBurton.

“The mature-aged demographic is the largest in the Geelong region and we feel like it’s important to engage with this growing population.” “Providing freebies for over50s every Tuesday aims to celebrate the experience and thank our over-50-year-old customers to regularly shop at Market Square.” The shopping centre’s freebies for over 50s change weekly, with old favourites repeated and new offers provided regularly to ensure something for everyone.

HEARING Aid Specialists Geelong has been a family-owned practice since 1991 but has operated on the same central city site in Yarra St since 1989. Locally owned, operated and staffed, the business takes great pride in helping people achieve their full hearing potential. Over the years hearing devices have become more advanced and able to provide wearers with better outcomes in a variety of listening situations. Along with the advancement in technology comes the need to accurately assess the performance of the hearing devices. Hearing Aid Specialists Geelong’s Marcel Timmers likens it to buying a sports car but then having it tuned by someone who either doesn’t have the right equipment or the experience to extract the correct performance. “It’s very important the devices are calibrated to the indi-

MACS winner LOCAL aged care provider Multicultural Aged Care Services (MACS) has been recognised at a national Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing Excellence Awards 2014. MACS was selected over seven other nominees for the Excellence in Aged Care Services award for providing innovative, best-practice culturally-inclusive care. Chief executive officer Joy Leggo says MACS is “very excited about the award. “It’s a wonderful recognition of the welcoming environment we create that’s respectful of all cultures, diversity and differences. At MACS we celebrate

the richness that together we can create. MACS’ diverse cultural community features over 40 nationalities. Many of the staff are themselves from non-English-speaking backgrounds, ensuring care that’s culturally responsive, sensitive and appropriate. “We provide smiles in all languages, Ms Leggo says. “Our programs include visiting local events, performances and cultural activities. At MACS we have cultural dining and culture-specific activities and offer language-specific worship services in the new MACS’ chapel.

“Residents can join our watercolour and multi-media workshops with MACS’ artists in residence. “Our clients also often enjoy our extensive ornamental and productive vegetable gardens. Residents can grow their own vegetable if they wish, just like they did at home. Ms Leggo says visitors often remark on MACS’ respect for all cultures and creeds. “It’s this approach that sees MACS as the first choice for so many local families seeking supportive care for older relatives. More information is available by phoning MACS on 5279 6800 or visiting macs.org.au.

Mum was living alone, had a couple of falls, we felt that she needed more help than we could provide. Tuckers Funeral and Bereavement Services’ Michele Van Liessum and Maree East.

Plan ahead for peace of mind PRE-PLANNING is something people do all the time. While money is often aside for travel, retirement and other important events, planning a funeral in advance plays a similar role in life. Each year more Australians plan their own celebration of life. But when seeking some form of funeral planning product it’s important to do research. Some funeral insurance plans can cost purchasers more in premiums than the value of the funeral. But with so many options available it can be hard to know where to start. Talking to the staff at Tuckers Funeral & Bereavement Service is the first step in discovering the many products available, including funeral bonds and fixed-price contracts. Tuckers community relations director Michele Van Liessum says every funeral-planning product is different and “may or may not suit your financial situation”. “When planning ahead it’s important to find the best option suited to your individual needs. Gaining the right information can save money or prevent an expensive mistake,” Michele advises Helping to educate the community, Tuckers regularly hosts talks throughout the region in which staff answer questions and provide more details about planning ahead. “We fully explain a range of planning options to help people make an informative decision,” Michele says. Detailed information about funeral planning is available by contacting Tuckers, a member of the Australian Funeral Directors Association. The association’s website also has information about pre-paid funerals.

Before coming to Freedom, Laura had spent 75 years in the Salvation Army before suddenly finding herself retired and alone in a large and empty house. A passionate ‘people person’, who loved helping others, she suddenly felt cut off from everything that made her life worthwhile. Like so many ageing Australians Laura craved company and something to live for. Today that ‘something’ is the vibrant, social community, with round the clock nursing care and support at Freedom Aged Care. For Laura, Freedom recognises her increasing frailty and her need to connect with others. Now, when Laura is not relaxing in the privacy of her self-contained Freedom home, you’re likely to find Laura running arts and crafts, watching a movie at the Freedom cinema or sharing a laugh at the Wrinkles Café & Bar. SOME time ago beautiful Khye Isaac Freek appeared on a current affairs TV program and stole my heart . So please join us for our sausage sizzle 8:30am to 10.30am Tuesday 5 August to raise funds for Khye, who was born in February 2013 with a leg condition called fibula hemimelia. The very rare condition, affecting one in 40,000 births, left him with one leg shorter than the other, a deformed ankle, three toes and a narrow foot. Following an exhausted search in Australia for a surgeon to fix Khye’s problem, his parents were told amputation would be the best outcome, while two surgeons said they could attempt some surgery but the success would be limited. Eventually Khye’s parents found one of only two surgeons in the world specialising in the type

of surgery Khye needs. Dr Dror Paley heads the Paley Advanced Limb Lengthening Institute, part of St Mary’s Hospital, Florida, USA . Dr Paley has advised that Khye needs a leg-lengthening and a “super ankle procedure, requiring a three month stay in Florida. The costs involved are around $180,000 plus living expenses during post-operative care.

Khye will also require physiotherapy three times a week after returning from US. He will also need another leg-lengthening procedure around the age of seven to eight and again at 15 years to correct the shortage. Khye’s parents hope to raise the money by the end of the year 2014, so he can have his first operation in January.

WINDOW tinting makes cars look cool but Tintmaster can give many more reasons why it’s worth tinting with unique Ultra-Carbon film, the highest performance product on the market. First, it keeps the interior cooler, especially in summer. Tinting protects occupants from harmful UVA rays, which can cause skin cancer and premature ageing, and also helps block UV rays that can lead to cracking and facing of vehicles’ interior surfaces. Window tinting film helps hold shattered glass together in the event of an accident so it doesn’t smash all over occupants’ faces. Tinting also removes glare from the Sun and other headlights, reducing the chances of accidents. Burglary risks are also reduced because tinting decreases the visibility of contents inside cars, such as mobile phones or other valuables. Air-conditioning is cheaper to run because it doesn’t have to work so hard with Tintmaster tint, meaning reduced load on the engine for improved fuel economy. However, installation is critical to window tinting and Tintmaster is expert in applying its products to all models of cars. Staff undertake thorough training and stay up to date with changes in tinting techniques and technologies. Tinting with Tintmaster usually costs between $250 and $500 and takes around half a day. Whether its black windows for great looks or achieving maximum heat and UV protection, Tintmaster has the solution to any tinting requirement. Meeting individual requirements is a specialty of the company, with prospective clients always welcome to talk to the staff about the best window tint job for any car. Tintmaster has been servicing the Geelong area for 11 years.

AGGRESSIVE: Mercedes CLS four-door coupe has a bold look that’s reflected in its driving.

It’s turbo time By EWAN KENNEDY WE have just reluctantly handed back a Mercedes-Benz CLS 250 CDI four-door coupe that, with a little imagination, can be classed as affordable. With a recommended tag of $114,900, the turbo-diesel version sits around $50,000 under the price of the V8 petrol CLS 500 we tested last year. Mercedes-Benz Australia is extremely aggressive at the moment. Its new A-Class is selling its wheels off, and the about to be launched C-Class, the most important vehicle in the importer’s line-up, is receiving a lot of presale publicity. The original Mercedes CLS, launched 10 years ago, had soft flowing lines that were later toughened up by way of a facelift. The all-new version has an even more aggressive look. The front grille is almost upright and has strong cues to the stunning SLS Gullwing by AMG. Not immediately noticeable is the use of LED headlights, a first in mass production cars. These adjust automatically in four directions - up, down, left or right - according to inputs from other cars’ headlights or taillights and the way the CLS’s steering wheel is turned. They provide almost as much vision as you get in daylight and we loved them. Swooping swage lines and the ‘Mercedes ponton’ look of the rear guards complete the side profile.

At the tail, the new Mercedes four-door coupe features huge taillights that stretch a long way forward. The interior is done in highquality materials that are finished to an exceptional standard. Power comes from the wellknown 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel and peaks at 150kW. More important than power is torque and this engine has plenty of it, 500 Newton metres to be precise. It’s not that many years since you needed a six-litre petrol V8 to achieve something approaching 500Nm. The transmission is also familiar, Merc’s seven-speed self shifter is one of the sweetest in the business. Multiple driver aids will do everything they can to keep you out of trouble. Should all else fail the CLS has no fewer than 11 airbags, including one to protect the driver’s knees to minimise injuries. It goes without saying the the CLS-Class gained five stars when tested by European authorities. The front seats of the new CLS are large and spacious and support reasonably well, it’s not intended to be a sports model and comfort is more important than the ability to corner at big G-forces. The basic design of the suspension is already good and is backed up by electronic sensors that can assist a driver who has over-driven the car, or who has simply made a mistake. Legroom in the rear seat is

Travel Scooters The Amazing Luggie

good, though you wouldn’t describe it as being generous. It’s obviously not a Mercedes S-Class, or even an E-Class back there, but four adults will find they can settle back and revel in the luxury of this sleek coupe/ sedan. Back country roads didn’t show up any great deterioration. Performance from what is a relatively small turbo-diesel powerplant is very good, indeed all but the revheads will find it has far more acceleration than they need. There’s some lag when the engine is suddenly asked to do something but once the turbocharger is spinning in a purposeful manner there’s plenty of urge. Indeed, in some stages through the rev range it feels almost as good as the V8 petrol. Love it! Fuel consumption in easy running sat in the six to seven litre range, with fives there if you really work at it. Around town diesel usage lifted to eight to 10 litres per 100 kilometres which is pretty low considering the performance potential. The new Mercedes-Benz CLS four-door coupe with a turbo-diesel engine is a highly competent machine that looks great and is dynamic on the road. Model range CLS 250 CDI 2.1-litre turbodiesel four-door coupe: $114,900 (automatic); CLS 500 4.7-litre bi-turbo petrol four-door coupe: $159,900 (automatic); CL3 63 AMG 5.5-litre bi-turbo petrol fourdoor coupe: 262,650 (automatic).

IndySport Cats ‘happy remaining bite Flying high with out of media spotlight’ Port Fairy’s tuna On the Chris Pitman

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

BEING an enigma wrapped in a mystery suits Geelong coach Chris Scott just fine. With many pundits downplaying Geelong’s premiership chances, Scott told his week’s media conference at Simonds Stadium that he was happy for other teams to enjoy the spotlight. Asked whether commentators were getting Geelong wrong, Scott said he wasn’t sure. “And I don’t think they’re sure either,” he added. “The difficult thing for them is they have to make a comment. “It would be a pretty boring opinion piece if they said, ‘I’m not sure where the Cats are and therefore not really sure who the favourites are’. They’ve got to make a call. “I think some of them get it wrong regularly but that’s what makes it interesting. “You don’t read what they write and take it as verbatim. It stirs different opinions and debate, which is healthy.” “I’m happy for other teams to be pushed up and for the media commentators look past us a little bit. That’s probably the place we’d rather be, to be frank.” The uncertainties about Geelong’s prospects are fuelled by the difference between its best and its worst – much like its Saturday night opponent, North Melbourne. Geelong tends to have its ups and downs within the one game, whereas Kangaroos fans don’t know whether Dr Jekyll or Mr Hyde will turn up to their games. But Scott consistently backs his side to deliver when the chips are down. “We’ve got some things internally we’re working on. We’re pretty confident that our footy, when it counts, is going to be pretty good,” he said. “Quite rightly most of the footy world is talking about Sydney and Hawthorn at the moment. They’ve been the best performed teams all year and they just played a cracking game on the weekend. “It’s only right they take their place centre stage. “As far as we’re concerned, where we are rated within the completion is kind of irrelevant. They’ll either get us right or they’ll get us wrong, and it won’t affect us one little bit. “We’ve got some tough games to finish the year over the next five weeks. “We’re just scrapping and scraping to get as high as we can and give ourselves a chance to play our best footy in the finals.” Stalwart defensive midfielder James Kelly will play his 250th AFL game this week. Scott lauded Kelly’s contribution to the team, saying he had added longevity to his superb skill-set and was only getting better. Scott has also been added to a coaching panel under Alastair Clarkson for the 2014 International Rules Series, alongside Fremantle coach Ross Lyon.

Bendigo challenge looms for North Geelong in NPL By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors faces a tough task when it travels to take on Bendigo in National Premier League’s first division this Saturday. Bendigo had a 3-3 draw against the favoured Richmond last round after holding a 2-0 lead at the 20th minute then watching three goals whizz past in the next 10 minutes. Bendigo eventually rose to the occasion, equalising late in the match to share the spoils. North Geelong took on Kingston City last weekend, going down inside 17 minutes when a hopeful ball drifted into the box, finding Kingston’s Max Etheridge unmarked to finish neatly past Daniel Zilic. The Warriors responded positively and minutes later Reardo Luka, who was in the thick of everything on the day, broke through a couple of challenges but hooked his shot just past the post. Mark Paleka levelled the scores on 30 minutes when he pounced onto a squared ball at the top of the box, slamming his shot past Sermin Sadikovski.

UNDER WRAPS: A bandaged Reardo Luka on his way toward goals for the Warriors. Picture: IVAN DUGANDZIC The Warriors came out of the blocks with intent after the break. Paleka was presented with a terrific chance two minutes in, forcing a great save from Sadikovski.

The slippery conditions took their toll on the match, with many players losing their footing and mistiming challenges. The result was a series of yellow cards shown to both sides. North Geelong made the most of the conditions, refusing to become frustrated and instead turning the screws with patience. The breakthrough came on 77 minutes when Luka broke free from his marker at the back post to nudge his header past the advancing keeper. The resulting collision between the pair left Sadikovski stretchered off with a suspected head injury and Luka bandaged up for a cut above his eye. Kingston provided a few nervous moments in the closing stages but Zilic was up to the task and saved neatly. Delighted coach Micky Colina deflected talk of promotion after the match. “We’ll continue to work on improving each week. Our performance was good today but we need to raise the bar continually.” Kingston coach Nick Tolios preferred to focus on the conditions of the ground, calling it a tough slog on a slippery surface.

JAMES Arkinstall and Andy Congram ventured down to Port Fairy recently after hearing numerous accounts of school-sized tuna on the bite. The pair decided to try something different and opted to fly fish, with Andy eventually boating a tuna after many refusals. The pair said subduing such a high-speed species was no easy task on a 20lb tippet with fly rod and reel. John Mole and Brian Long fished the Wye River area for Australian salmon but had to contend with strong easterly wind. They still caught fish averaging 1kg and a few specimens of 2.5kg on 25g Sluk lures. I fished the Surf Coast for salmon on Saturday afternoon with minimal luck. I changed tactics to casting lures in some of the small creeks and rivers for bream, landing a 39cm fish at dusk on a 60mm Daiwa Double Clutch. Clifton Springs continued producing great numbers of squid over the shallow grass beds, especially during periods of clear water without floating weed. Anglers caught salmon to 1kg while casting 25g Gillies baitfish-profile lures at Portarlington Pier. Anglers who fished the tide change reported increased catch rates. Queenscliff Harbour produced silver trevally to 45cm on soft plastics such as turtleback worms in the Pumpkin Seed on high tide. Anglers caught good numbers of whiting from the mouth of Swan Bay. Pippies and tenderised squid accounted for most fish, with the average size around 35cm. Ocean Grove Angling Club’s Ron Proud trolled off Barwon Heads for pike last weekend, landing a 70cm fish on a deep-diving hard-body lure. Greg Thomson spent Saturday afternoon casting strike pro Bob ‘N’ Spoons around the shoreline of Lake Purrumbete. He landed Chinook salmon to 450g, with most caught while casting off the jetties at the caravan park. Other anglers at the lake have caught brown trout to 2kg while trolling Tassie Devils at first light. A few anglers also had success casting shallow-diving hard-body lures such as Cranka minnows over the extensive weed beds. Lake Wendouree yielded brown trout to 2.5kg for both boat and land-based anglers, especially those who covered plenty of water. Highton’s St Augustine’s Lake still holds reasonable numbers of rainbow trout released for school holidays. Perry Stavropoulos took cousins Thomas and Lachlan Welsh for a quick session at the lake where the pair managed a rainbow each on Powerbait Michael Evans caught redfin to 49cm and 1.9kg while casting Fish Arrow soft plastics close to the weed beds at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir. Anglers chasing redfin also took larger trout as a by-catch. This weekend Lake Bullen Merri should fish well for Chinook salmon down deep with bait or lures trolled behind a downrigger. If the wind holds back Clifton Springs and St Leonards should have good numbers of squid, which is a great option for stocking up ahead of snapper season.
