FOUNDATIONS OF PROPERTY SUCCESS TWENTY-FIVE years ago in the middle of the “recession we had to have” a group of friends started a small property syndicate in Bendigo. There was a real estate agent, a solicitor, an engineer and accountants in the group of 16 investors who each contributed between $9000 and $12,000 to buy the 30-block land development in Eagle Hawk. That was back in 1989 and now the group is pretty much a household name across three states - Villawood Properties - a company that now turns over between $200 and $250 million a year. Those numbers would have been a surprise to engineer Rory Costelloe and his group of mates back then, maybe even to Tony Johnson who joined Rory as joint executive director in 2006. Together they have grown the business into a national operator and one that has achieved a 400 per cent increase in turnover in that time. He said back then they never dreamed they would ever extend beyond Bendigo - but that happened 10 years later when they extended to Melbourne. “We never dreamed we would go interstate but 10 years after that we extended into Queensland and NSW,” he said.
