of their disappearance and subsequent murders,” he said. “Based on the evidence collected, we now believe we have identified several motives for their murders. “Barbara McCulkin may have had knowledge about serious crimes and the young McCulkin girls may have been sexually assaulted.” He said the person of interest was not at the property at the time of the search and there was no warrant out for his arrest “at this point in time”. But he confirmed investigators would “certainly be making inquiries to locate him in the near future” and did not rule out further searches and interviews. “We are looking at a number of other serious crimes that occurred around the same time by an organised group of people and their associates,” he said.

IT’S ALL ABOUT SAVING WATER
WARWICK has become the centre of a fresh investigation into the suspected murder of a Brisbane mother and her two young daughters more than 40 years ago. The Homicide Squad and regional detectives swooped on two rural properties at Warwick on Tuesday afternoon, seizing a number of items in a bid to solve the mystery surrounding Barbara McCulkin and her daughters Leanne and Vicki. The three women disappeared from their Highgate Hill, Brisbane, home on the night of 16 January 1974. They have not been heard from since and their bodies have never been found. Detective Superintendent Steve Holahan of Homicide confirmed the properties at Frees and Glengallan
roads were associated with a primary person of interest in the original investigation and 1980 coronial inquiry. Vincent O’Dempsey was charged with the murder in 1980 before being acquitted in 1981. Cold case investigators received significant new evidence as a result of an appeal made by Barbara’s family with homicide detectives on the 40th anniversary of their disappearance in January this year. Investigators joined with the Crime and Corruption Commission in the hunt for new clues in what Det Supt Holahan described as a “distasteful crime”. “Detectives have interviewed potential witnesses across Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria and have uncovered compelling new evidence surrounding events that took place on the day

He said he was pleased with the investigation and was led to believe a number of the items seized from the Warwick priorities corroborated the different information and versions that had been provided by witnesses. A reward of $250,000 for information which leads to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder of Barbara May McCulkin, Vicki Maree McCulkin and Barbara Leanne (known as Leanne) McCulkin is on offer. In addition, an appropriate indemnity from prosecution will be recommended for any accomplice with information leading to the conviction of those responsible for the murders. Any person who has information in relation to this matter should contact the Homicide Squad direct or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Crazy closes
Youth on the Edge
By ALENA HIGGINS WARWICK’S Crazy Clark’s will close in a matter of days, a spokesman for the receivers has announced. The Rose City shop is one of 22 stores shutting for good this Sunday, following the collapse of parent company DSG Holdings Australia (DSG) last month. Fourteen employees, including 12 casuals and a full-time and part-time worker, will lose their jobs, KordaMentha Restructuring spokesman Michael Smith confirmed on Saturday. Crazy Clark’s Stanthorpe was dealt a similar blow two weeks ago, with 39 staff let go on 27 July as part of the fall-out. DSG, which also owns the embattled Sam’s Warehouse chains, owes $20 million to trade creditors and $10 million in staff entitlements. The receivers hope to be in a position to pay those entitlements by the end of September, subject to stock sales, Mr Smith said.
THE youth event, Edgefest, held at Warwick at the weekend has been hailed a success. Southern Downs Regional Council Youth Development Officer Hailey Cosh said she and the organising crew were “both happy with the event” and the level of community involvement. She said the main function of the day was to give young people from the recent Youth Music Industry Program a place to highlight the skills they had learned over the past six months in the fields of DJaying, performance and sound. She said it was also a chance to launch the second round of the program which starts this week. As well as the students, who performed throughout the day, the event included face-painting, a barbecue run by the Warwick Gymnastics Club and stalls from the Warwick Collective, SDIEA, and Headspace. Darling Downs Laser Skirmisth also set up an arena. The event was part of the Edge program, funded with the help of Arts Queensland and the council.

A WITHOUT prejudice meeting between Stanthorpe Agricultural Society, a neighbouring commercial caravan park and Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) has failed to come to an agreement on the ancillary use of the showground for camping and caravanning purposes, councillors have heard. SDRC resolved during last Wednesday’s general meeting to seek legal advice on how to move the matter forward after receiving correspondence from solicitors acting for Top of Town Tourist Park.
The agricultural society is seeking to have its original conditions of use, formerly approved by Stanthorpe Shire Council in July 2003, relaxed in line with “similar organisations within the region”. Currently, the showground can be used as a camping ground for a club or association in conjunction with the use of facilities provided on-site six times per calendar year only. “There are a whole series of comments (in the letter) that would suggest to me that the owners of the caravan park don’t accept a lot of the issues that were discussed at the without prejudice meeting,”
SDRC director of planning and environment Ken Harris said. Cr Jamie Mackenzie suggested the Agricultural Society “get cracking” and submit a new application as “anything above” the 2003 limits would see them in breach and expose council “as the meat in the sandwich” to costly litigation. The amended recommendation, which was deferred for a second time, allows the showgrounds to be used for ancillary camping by participants, competitors and officials who are directly involved in activities and events being conducted at the showgrounds, as well as stock-
men and members of the Showman’s Guild. It does not allow for camping of spectators or the general public. Five letters were received in opposition to the recommendation, with the majority of concerns pointing to the “unreasonable” use of the showgrounds to host caravan and motor home clubs or cyclist or motorbike riders. Under the 2003 permit, the showground is permitted to accommodate a maximum of four caravan club events each calendar year with a maximum four-night duration and 50-site occupation limit for each event.

Teenager’s death
THOSE undecided about the water fluoridation debate may get the chance to hear both sides of the argument before the Southern Downs Regional Council sends out a survey to gauge public sentiment for the practice. Councillors narrowly agreed last Wednesday to provide the venues for public information sessions regarding the upcoming fluoridation survey and advise the Department of Health and Queenslanders for Safe Drinking Water of its offer. It comes after president of Queenslanders for Safe Drinking Water Merilyn Haines contacted councillor Vic Pennisi to request a number of information forums be held in the weeks leading up to the distribution of the survey, which is expected to be sent out along with water rates in October. Cr Pennisi said it made sense for respondents to be fully informed. “It is my view that it is fair and reasonable for people who are going to make the decision, and for those who haven’t got a view, to be given the opportunity to hear both sides of the debate so they can make an informed decision when the time comes,” Cr Pennisi said. “In fact, I think it shows true leadership.” A Queensland Health spokewoman said they welcomed the opportunity to participate in any public sessions.

Doc’s calling Australia home TENTERFIELD officially welcomed its newest Australian citizen to the region late last month with an affirmation ceremony at Tenterfield Shire Council. Carolina Munoz pledged her loyalty to Australia in front of mayor Peter Petty and councillors at the council’s general meeting on 23 July before taking part in a touching rendition of the national anthem. Dr Munoz, who hails from Columbia, spent a number of years in Sydney before moving to Tenterfield in June last year where she works as a general practitioner (GP) at the local medical centre. Although she misses her family and parts of her culture, Dr Munoz said she loved her new home for the opportunities and safety it provided. “Tenterfield is a good place for working, it’s very quiet, you don’t have too much traffic and the people are very nice,” she said. “In general, Australians are really accepting and easy-going people to be with.”

A WARWICK teenager has died following a suspected case of meningococcal disease in the city at the weekend. The 18-year-old female, who is believed to be a former Warwick State High School student, was receiving treatment at Warwick Hospital after developing symptoms, but sadly passed away on Monday morning. Darling Downs Hospital and
Health Service (DDHHS) moved swiftly to assure local residents the tragedy was not cause for widespread alarm. Director of Darling Downs Public Health Unit Dr Penny Hutchinson said the disease was difficult to contract unless there had been close and prolonged contact with the patient and people in Warwick were at “very, very low risk”. “All of the people who have been in close contact with the most recent

GET READY for the RETUNE! As the inal step in Australia’s successful move to digital-only TV, some TV channels will be changing frequencies. These moves will free up broadcasting spectrum so that it can be used for new services such as mobile broadband. After the channels have changed, you will need to retune your digital TV, set-top box or digital TV recorder to ind the channels that have moved. The retune will take place across Australia progressively until the end of 2014. Your retune date depends on your location and which tower you’re receiving your TV signal from however for the Southern Downs the retune will be occurring throughout late July and August. Some people within the same town or city will have diferent retune dates. This is because some areas may be serviced by a number of TV towers. The best way to ind the retune date in your area is by entering your address into the “Get retune info” box on the website at: digitalready.gov.au/retune. Just like the successful switch to digital-only TV, the retune has been carefully planned to make sure the change is as easy as possible. For further information on retuning, visit the retune website at digitalready.gov.au/retune or contact the call centre on 1800 20 10 13, 8am to 10pm (AEST), 7 days.

A MAN miraculously escaped death on Monday morning when his semi-trailer rolled on its roof at Warwick, crushing him inside. Emergency crews worked for about half an hour to rescue the trapped driver from the mangled cabin and to secure the diesel spill after the truck lost control at the McEvoy Street and Bracker Road roundabout about 8.05am. Onlookers say they were gobsmacked the 22-yearold from Millmerran walked away from his rig, which was carrying a load of pig manure. He was taken to hospital for observation with minor injuries. The Killarney turn was closed for about an hour while tow truck drivers righted the severely damaged truck.

Broilers have their way with the council By ALENA HIGGINS SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council (SDRC) has rubberstamped a controversial poultry farm and given the green light for the expansion of an existing development, despite concerns from nearby landowners. Councillors acknowledged they relied “heavily on environmental assessments and conditions imposed by State Government departments in making their decisions.
The development of a chicken farm near Pratten, with an annual throughput of about seven million birds, was fiercely contested by a group of landowners who objected to the proposal on environmental, amenity and planning grounds. The group organised an urgent public meeting on 28 July to discuss the proposed application and SDRC’s future plans for the industry in the wake of a string of application approvals.
In addition, councillors heard serious odour complaints had been raised by neighbours of the Murrays Bridge property, which was approved for an extra 10 sheds to house 600,000 birds. Council had previously issued a partial approval on 30 June 2012 for 28 sheds and 1,680,000 birds. Cr Jamie Mackenzie said while he felt sympathy for the neighbours of the Pratten site he acknowledged there were “jobs
there and the site does lend itself because of its topography to intensive agriculture. Mayor Peter Blundell said in order to capture those benefits the application needed to be approved. Councillors resolved to send the submission, which refer to complaints regarding existing use, to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry for investigation.

TAFE opens its doors MEMBERS of the public are invited to attend an information session about the future of TAFE in Warwick as the institute officially opens its new learning centre tomorrow evening. Originally set down for Town Hall, the seminar has been moved to the Dragon Street campus to allow interested groups and individuals to see the new space and how it will be used. A Warwick Business Chamber breakfast meeting in June heard Queensland TAFE faces unprecedented competition and significant
funding changes across the sector in the wake of its establishment as an independent statutory body. The purpose-built “drop in space” features contemporary furniture designed to allow students to undertake self-directed learning, meet classmates to discuss group work and talk to teaching staff about course content. TAFE Queensland South West general manager Trevor Schwenke said the redesign of student learning and support spaces meant Warwick TAFE students would have access to enhanced learning resources and
equipment and student support services, all in the one building. “Aside from the bank of new computers and working spaces there is also a new customer service environment which has allowed for centralisation of student inquiry and support services in a single location,” Mr Schwenke said. “We’ve undertaken additional work to relocate visitor parking immediately outside the learning centre, creating a convenient and easily accessible location for current and future students alike.” The staff administration area has
been relocated and several teaching spaces now have interactive smartboards, meaning teachers can make use of contemporary teaching tools to present course content. The official opening of the new learning centre and information session will be held tomorrow from 5pm. To RSVP, please email generalmanager.southwest@tafe.qld.edu. au or call 4694 1584. MARANOA MP Bruce Scott’s voice was one among a Southern Downs chorus, cheering on Diamonds captain - and Allora local - Laura Geitz as the Aussie netballers snatched Commonwealth Games gold from New Zealand on Sunday night. “I was absolutely glued to the TV, it was such a great result for the Australian Commonwealth Games netball team and our very own Laura Geitz,” Mr Scott said. “I’ve previously praised Laura in the House of Representatives because I want to make sure everyone knows she grew up in Allora, in the Maranoa! “Laura proves it doesn’t matter where you come from, the sky’s the limit when you set a goal and work hard towards it.”
STUDENT safety at Northern Tablelands schools will be bolstered with the installation of flashing lights in a bid to slow motorists down at school zones. Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall welcomed the second phase of the rollout by the NSW Government, which promises to ensure every single school in the state receives a set of flashing lights by the end of 2015. Flashing lights will be installed at remaining schools in the Tenterfield local government area from May next year.

SDRC applied for Federal Government funding under the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productiv-
ity Program (administered through State Government Department of Transport and Main Roads) to secure 75 per cent of the costs of this project, with SDRC funding the balance. Council has also allocated
$100,000 in its 2014-’15 budget to further improve safety at the saleyards with work to include improvements to the walkways, stairs and construction of chemical and hay storage facilities.
Ready to fight fires under new program BUSHFIRE defences will be beefed up to protect homes and livelihoods across the Southern Downs as part of a natural disaster resilience program to protect Queensland communities. Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) will share in more than $192,000 with three other Queensland councils to build new fire breaks, clear fire trails and improve their management of fire hazards. Council ramps it up at the saleyards SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has installed a $122,000 livestock loading ramp that will increase safety considerably for users at the Warwick Saleyards. SDRC mayor Peter Blundell said the Warwick Saleyards had been extremely busy, having processed cattle and sheep with a stock value turnover of over $46 million in the last financial year. “The newly installed double ramp incorporates operator walkways and a circular crowding yard,” Cr Blundell said. “This allows livestock to be loaded and unloaded without having transport drivers in livestock raceways, meaning they are completely separated from the livestock. “With the volume of livestock coming through the saleyards, cattle will jostle in the yards but the new loading ramp means that the animals are contained and restricted due to the sheeted enclosure. “The crowding gate and a switching gate allow an operator to easily divert livestock from one deck to another, creating a far more efficient and safer operation. “It also ensures there is little

contributed $120,000 towards the projects, with the remaining funding contributed by the councils involved. Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg said it was just as crucial to prepare vulnerable communities for the bushfire season as it was against floods and cyclones. “Mother Nature has pushed Queenslanders to the brink in the past few years and we are doing everything we can to not only protect them but make them stronger,” Mr Springborg said.
“This money will help councils get in early and prepare their defences to better prepare their communities for the upcoming fire season.” Funding will go towards four projects, including $42,000 for SDRC to design and construct fire trails to provide clear access for emergency personnel. SDRC mayor Peter Blundell welcomed the joint announcement by Mr Springborg, Minister for Justice Michael Keenan and Minister for Community Recovery and Re-
silience David Crisafulli and said council would start work as soon as possible. “With the current dry weather, we still have areas of dense vegetation and it is particularly important we are prepared for what could be a high-risk fire season,” Cr Blundell said. “Council is appreciative of the funding allocation and we will put the money to good use building fire breaks, clearing trails and managing potential fire hazards.”
THE 2014 annual household chemical collection is happening on Wednesday, 13 August at the Tenterfield Waste Transfer Station. Residents can take old/unwanted or outof-date chemicals including poisons, pesticides, herbicides, paint, gas cylinders and fire extinguishers to the transfer station to dispose of them between 10am and noon and 2pm and 5pm. More than 20 litres or 20kg of product will attract a small fee.

Prices hike to have a dip By ALENA HIGGINS GOING for a dip in the region’s seasonal public pools has become more expensive, with Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) determining the 2014-’15 schedule of fees last week. While casual admission fees rose only mildly, by 10 or 20 cents, family season passes have skyrocketed. A family pass, consisting of two adults and two children, will now cost an extra $60 at the Stanthorpe pool and an extra $90 at the Allora and Killarney swimming pools, taking the total cost to $300 and $270 respectively. However, the hike could have been much worse for Granite Belt households, with family passes at the Talc Street pool spared a massive 100 per cent jump from $240 to $480 when councillors intervened.
Many councillors voiced their concerns about the consistency of the season passes across all three pools during last Wednesday’s general meeting at Stanthorpe. Cr Denise Ingram said she feared the huge increase would discourage participation. “I understand Stanthorpe has the 50-metre pool, but the cost for families does seem too high as they are not always using the 50m pool,” she said. “I often see families there with small children watching them in the kiddies’ pool - it’s not an incentive for people to purchase a season pass and attend as much as they might have.” Cr Glyn Rees highlighted the impost on families with more than two children and agreed with Cr Jo McNally that fees should be mirrored across the board.
While council sets the entry fees, the lessee or manager of the pool is entitled to retain all admission fees. SDRC director business and community services David Tuxford said the modified fees closed the gap where there was the potential for two adults to gain cheaper entry through a family season pass and reflected the fact that the Stanthorpe pool was conventionally heated and used a lot more power. A resolution by deputy mayor Ross Bartley to leave Killarney and Allora at 2013-’14 levels and adjust Stanthorpe to Killarney and Allora’s 2014-’15 fees was lost. However, councillors eventually agreed on a resolution by Cr Ingram to adopt the 2014’15 fees at Allora, Killarney and Stanthorpe, but rejected the increase to Stanthorpe’s family pass which was set at $300.
Council’s shock ‘no’ to servo By ALENA HIGGINS PLANS for a Woolworths petrol station at Stanthorpe have been thwarted in a surprising act of refusal. Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) went against the recommendation and voted down an application for a material change of use for the proposed service station at 127 and 129 High Street last week, effectively placing it in limbo. The controversial development has faced widespread opposition from members of the public, who have expressed concerns about its proximity to a nearby child care centre as well as other health and traffic impacts.Fears were also raised about the future viability of locally-owned and run service
stations if the high profile business - which provides discounts through shopper dockets - went ahead. Before they began their discussion at last Wednesday’s general meeting, mayor Peter Blundell reminded those councillors present that direct competition could not be relied upon as grounds for refusal. Councillors Vic Pennisi and Denise Ingram had left the chamber after declaring a conflict of interest earlier on. However, a number of councillors appeared unable to shake the groundswell of public dissent that included 13 submissions and 187 letters against the proposal, the latter of which were given to Cr Blundell on the morning of the meeting. Cr Glyn Rees said he did not

Primary school hosts MP By ALENA HIGGINS MEMBER for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall has visited Bonshaw Public School, right on the Queensland border and one of the smallest schools in the electorate, to attend an Education Week assembly. Mr Marshall said the special events held during the week had helped turn the focus of the community on public schools and inspire students to work hard and chase their dreams. “It was a pleasure to address the students at Bonshaw - it’s a very small school with only nine students but there is certainly nothing small about the effort the students put into their school work or their participation in regional sporting events,” Mr Marshall said. “At the last zone sports meet, every student from Bonshaw entered every track event - a huge effort and they are to be commended for their enthusiasm and stamina.” Mr Marshall also presented classroom awards to students and enjoyed a musical presentation by the students prepared specially for their weekly assembly.
believe another petrol station at Stanthorpe was warranted. “If it was another particular development we needed then I think we would look at it in a different light,” he said. “But for me there are enough fuel outlets and I think the businesses, etc, would be affected by this new one.” Deputy mayor Ross Bartley said he did not support the recommendation but admitted they would “struggle to find a planning reason to refuse it”. When put to a vote, the recommendation was lost, three votes to four. “The applicant has the right to appeal to the Planning and Environment Court on the basis that this is deemed a refusal,” a SDRC spokesperson said.

What’s On Nature’s glory War tribute on song By TANIA PHILLIPS ONE hundred years after the start of WWI and the founding of the Red Cross, Stanthorpe Museum is set to hold a musical tribute to the Red Cross nurses of that time. The Granite Belt Choir will perform a song from World War I as part of celebrations to mark the Red Cross anniversary, Australian Red Cross Stanthorpe Branch centenary co-ordinator Mary Rofe said. “Research for the ‘100 Years of Red Cross’ display has unearthed a WWI songbook which contains a song dedicated to the ‘The Red Cross Nurse’,” she said. “The music was written by famous author Harriet Beecher Stowe and the lyrics by John Porter. “The Granite Belt Choir will perform this song as arranged by Mrs Jeanene Chapman their director, as part of the entertainment at the opening of the centenary display and planting of the memorial rose garden at the museum. “The music for ‘The Red Cross
Nurse’ was found among WWI artifacts at the Stanthorpe Museum. “It is in a songbook with several pieces of music from that era and we have it on display as part of the special ‘100 Years of Red Cross’ display set to open on 22 August.” The Granite Belt Choir, which has 50-60 active members, will perform the song to begin the celebrations. “They will finish the opening events with a selection of songs which depict Red Cross involvement in Australia’s history over the last century through the Bush Nurses, the Land Army, Voluntary Aid Detachment nurses and auxiliaries as well as in disaster relief and blood collection in recent times,” Mary said. “The display highlights the guiding principle of the Australian Red Cross, People helping People.” What: Centenary of Red Cross Stanthorpe Branch When: 10am, 22 August Where: Stanthorpe Museum, 12 High Street
THE Green Canvas is an eclectic exhibition of artworks in several media presented by natural history artists Kathleen Davies and Margaret Hodgson OAM. On display at the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery from 5 August to 21 September the collection of works brings to light the beauty and intricate detail of the natural world around us through the eyes and hands of these two artists. Some of the images were developed several decades ago and have been reproduced in interpretive projects by government departments and community agencies. The majority however, were produced in recent years and display a wealth of variety in technique and subject matter by both Kathleen and Margaret. Their lives have travelled in parallel, finally meeting at the same crossroads and merging their talents in combined events such as The Green Canvas to further the conservation cause and focus attention on the art of science. Illustrations in black and white with a hint of colour train the eye on the techniques used by the artists and the detail of subjects within the frames. Margaret’s success in her work was recognised decades ago, but it was more significantly recognised when she received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her work in the arts, and inclusion in the Who’s Who of Women in publications since 2010. guide books on plants in both Australia and internationally, Margaret has recently brought the skill of digital photography into her repertoire, and has photographed and filmed some of the most secretive of birds. Margaret’s early life saw her collecting illustration specimens in some of the world’s remote locations in an era when this was still a male-dominated profession. Kathleen, a former manager at the gallery, has a wealth of knowledge on wildlife and culture. Her life has revolved around the natural environment and her work has been reproduced in many government publications and has found homes in private establishments.

Artist Kathleen Davies finding inspiration.
More recently her photographic images have been travelling the globe finding use in environmental centres, classrooms and social media. Also an author of stories and verse, Kathleen still publishes as a journalist for regional companies. As writers, both women extend the boundaries of art to include the written word. An extra exhibition inclusion is Kathleen’s decorated billycan which has travelled widely. The national travelling Billycans Exhibition was instigated by the Waltzing Matilda Gallery in Winton for the Year of the Outback. In late 2001 the Outback Regional Gallery invited artists from across Australia to create an artwork representative of the theme - ‘Life in the outback’- that could also be contained within a standard sized 4.5 litre billycan. The response to the exhibition was enormous and a collection of artworks by 58 artists was assembled. Kathleen’s billycan was one of those works. The oil on canvas images adorn the billycan, of particular interest is an image of a desert gecko reflected from the inside base. This is an opportunity to see some original works of art previously only viewed in books. Kathleen is also exhibiting for two weeks from 24 September (opening day) at the Pyramids Road Wines space near Ballandean.

Carbon crunch AT LAST some good news for ratepayers of the Tenterfield Shire, with the repeal of the carbon tax rates should drop by at least 15 per cent, so now the ratepayers can celebrate and if they don’t the ACCC has the power to apply fines of up to $1 million. Paul Varley, Urbenville.
Nervous flyer FREQUENT flyer points have never interested this writer and recent events will find many others losing interest. Flying in scary planes will now be a proven example of man’s inhumanity to men, women and children. Letters to editors allow opinions to be examined by readers; however there are no words to describe the actions following the downing of the Malaysian plane. Now it is being reported that the road to the site is boobytrapped to stall investigations. How is it possible ever again to trust world powers? Australia will not ever be as it was once, while police have formed special squads to counter crimes caused by those who have come to this country with trouble on their minds. What we are seeing overseas will be ours to bear, but still we see and hear apologists even within our parliaments, wanting more and more strangers to be
welcomed, regardless of countries of origin. As for Israel (Jay Nauss, SFT 31 July) our island will never know of tunnels carrying bomb throwers, so who are we to judge? The world with Ebola and death in wars is no longer “over there” but during these two weeks of watching our Aussies and so many others die as they did, it feels as if it is right on our doorstep. Melba Morris, Allora.
Some selection ON 30 July other residents and I attended a meeting so as to be able to attend “The Heavy Vehicle Bypass Workshop” on the 13 August. The meeting in July was attended by a little over 30 residents and at least 80 bureaucrats from Grafton and the coast and a private “facilitator”. I was dismayed when after listening to the facilitator and other bureaucrats for nearly two hours only two Tenterfield residents out of the 28 attending the workshop in August would be selected by Tenterfield residents. I think it is time the people of Tenterfield stood up and rejected these bureaucrats and others who are making decisions for their own good and not necessarily for the benefit of this town. We have had the decision to use the west route made arbitrarily by these public servants from out
of town. This workshop in August will be set up with four tables of seven plus the facilitator. This means only two tables will have democratically nominated “stakeholders”. Who are these faceless people who get to sit in judgement on a decision that should be made by Tenterfield citizens? It is interesting to note that the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) were heavily involved in the west decision. All large trucks turning onto Rouse Street from the Bruxner cross to the wrong side of the road, to travel south. Surely this is an illegal turn? The RMS have tacitly agreed for the continuation of this unlawful situation which is dangerous for both pedestrians and other vehicles. Hope you like your new rates. On top of the 15 per cent, congratulations to our general manager, five out of the other six items on your rates notice have also risen. Why are these people not accountable for their continued spending? The higher costs are the simple way to balance the budget. Our property values can only get worse than they already are as our rates (the total rates charges) that you pay now surpass many city and abutting shires. Let’s get together and reclaim our town! Ian Walker, Tenterfield.

The lycra crowd pedals into town By Alena Higgins A MASSIVE group of lycra-clad cyclists sprinted into Warwick on Saturday, crossing the finish line after completing one of the most gruelling point-to-point races around. Beginning at Lake Apex Park at Gatton, more than 400 cyclists sweated it out as they puffed and panted the 96 kilometres to the Rose City as part of the 32nd Cunningham Classic, finishing up at the Horse and Jockey Hotel. Most of the competitors were members of Brisbane’s Kangaroo Point Cycling Club, with club president Cameron Hemming praising the ideal weather conditions. “We would call it perfect racing conditions, there was a strong south-westerly which makes racing really, really tough,” he said.
The Interbuild Cobra team, from left, Adam White, Matt Zaranski,Tim Dalgliesh, Matt Ryan (winner of Masters ‘A’) and Nathen White. “This race is not known for being a nice day in the sun rolling into Warwick. “It is a massive mark of respect to win this race.”

As Kurek Ashley says, ‘what’s good about this?’, these words are the mantra the office follows. Kristen Lovett Accounting Services believes you pay tax - you’ve made money, that’s what’s good about this. They aim to reduce that tax, you’ve made money and made the right decision about your accounting - that’s what’s great about this!” Having operated since 2006, the office has a modern feel. KLAS is unable to boast of being open for 50 years in the same location, with the same principal, with the same clients, but is proud of the fact that it is innovative and adapts rapidly to change in the profession. Although the business has operated for less than a decade, the growth has been rapid and the client satisfaction impeccable. This team know their profession not only in the eyes of tax law and legislation but how to service and maintain their clients. Kristen Lovett Accounting Services is aware that a lot of clients, particularly its female clients, like to deal
Kristen Lovett and the team from KLAS offer great accounting advice and services.
with women when it comes to business. They feel comfortable, less anxious, less intimidated and more likely to connect with a female advisor. A female advisor is empathetic to their situation and circumstances and in most cases has experienced the same
events, and see the importance in the work life balance, particularly when it comes to children of the working mother. Kristen Lovett Accounting Services values the relationships the team has with their female clients.
Don’t be fooled though - they also have some pretty impressive male entrepreneurs and businessmen working with the KLAS team with some very strong business relationships, too. Richard Branson isn’t quite there yet, but Kristen is working on it.
Kristen Lovett Accounting Services has launched the ‘Supporting Women in Business Campaign’ to better communicate its suitability for the female entrepreneur in deciding who to use as their accountant and trusted adviser. Further details on 02 6736 1145.

THIS property at The Summit is an 8.5 acre selfsustainable hobby farm with great water and large house. LOCATED just nine minutes north of Stanthorpe town centre. If you choose, you could be very self sustainable with your own fruit, vegies, meat and milk. Excellent spring-fed dam, large enough to irrigate to your heart’s content - all useable agricultural land. Space for cattle, sheep and goats, orchards and vegie gardens - currently a small orchard and raised garden beds in production - heaps of scope to increase. The property is well fenced and is in at least four paddocks. Large four-bedroom, brick residence with two kitchens, two bathrooms and two living areas. Big wood fire box for winter heating. Lots of sheds, garage areas and stables - plus rain water tanks. This is a great ‘alternative lifestyle’ property.

This Sunday, 10th August, Market in the Mountains will once again be opening their doors from 8 am till 12 noon at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre when only the best of quality handmade craft is for sale. We make, bake, sew or grow what we sell including gourmet foods, leatherwork, craft and much more. It’s getting closer to Christmas each day and our clever artisans always have some surprising offers for you. It is still part of Brass Monkey Season so expect the weather to be a little brisk or even very cold.
1148710-FA32-2014
When you visit, drop into our Granite Rock Café for a delicious homemade substantial breakfast, Devonshire Tea or coffee and cake at very reasonable prices. Sandra and Samantha are only too willing to provide you with good, made on the spot delicious and nourishing food. From January 2015, Market in the Mountains will be reverting to one market a month on the second Sunday as we did for many years. We will still present a market on any long weekend Sunday but the market we have been holding on the 4th Sunday for about 6 years will not be held. The cost of fuel and everything else makes it difficult for our stallholders who travel from Tenterfield, Warwick and points further on to be asked to attend two [three if it is a long weekend] markets in the one month. The fundraising organisation at Sunday’s Market is the Stanthorpe Sea Cadets of TS Kangaroo. They will be having a raffle so come along and buy a ticket.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20) With Mars now in Scorpio much is changing. The onus is on you to own up to your emotions and feelings. This will give you the raw material you need to begin a transformational process. You are heading into rich waters of self-reflection. Embraced, this will make you a wise ram. TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20) There’s a strong sense in your bones of moving towards a deepening state of peace and equanimity. With Venus in Cancer, this is likely to be nurtured by your willingness to be emotionally engaged with the people and things that matter in your life. Be steady and open. GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) Mercury has just entered Leo to join the Sun. When Mercury goes into Leo it’s time to discover that you are not a domesticated kitten, but rather something far more grand and aristocratic. This grand aristocratic state is not a glorified ego state. It is the state of a warm and open heart. CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22) Though to all sense and purpose you have gone onto the backburner, Venus is accompanying you through your quietness and solitude. The highest function of Venus is to support the discovery of delight, even in the most unexpected of scenarios. Watch out for the luminous moments. LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22) The Sun, Jupiter and now Mercury are in Leo. The Sun is turning up the wick on your life force. Jupiter is ensuring that you are heading on a trajectory of growth and expansion. Mercury is testing to see that your journey is fuelled by genuine insight, rather than any flaky theory. VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22) With both the Sun and Mercury in Leo, life is sending you an alarm bell, designed to wake you from any existential slumbering you might be doing. It’s way too easy to take things for granted and let the juiciness of life slip by. Take the hint and come out of all ease and indifference.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21) Mars is most definitely asserting his presence in your sign now. He’s not just skirting around the edges. Mars is masculine energy. Here is a golden opportunity to figure out just what masculinity means. When is it healthy and when not? When it’s off kilter, how can you bring it back? SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21) As you get comfortable in your own skin, so you become more interested in and able to, melt and merge with others. This is one of life’s little paradoxes. The more clean we are in our individuality, the more we are interested in and can, love. Let it happen without expectation. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19) It’s going to take a fair amount of awareness to keep all your horses pointed in the same direction. Life is pulling at you from a multitude of angles. Handled well, this will give you strength. It will crystallise your aim. If not, you’ll get a rich life lesson that will serve you well. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18) It’s enough to handle three planets in your opposite, Leo, without there being any wild cards thrown into the mix. Life is being kind. It’s giving you room to adjust your moves and your understanding. Others may seem self-centred. They are trying in their own way to be real. PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20) While others are being buffeted hither and thither by the wilds of the astrological weather, you are being given a clear run. Open yourself to relating. Open yourself to possibilities of deepening your understanding of the great balancing act entailed in living each day. Explore delight.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23) The Moon begins her week in Libra. She is rising as she passes through, so she fills you up with optimism and a sense of possibility during her short transit. This is a time for laying foundations. Changes that have happened, need to be accepted and reinforced in a healthy happy way.

Tipsters’ sighs of relief By CASEY O’CONNOR
1148200-ACM32-14
RUGBY League tipsters breathed a collective sigh of relief at the close of Round 21 - finally a round where most games went to script. Manly kicked things off in style on Friday night with a convincing win over the Broncos. In a game where the Broncos looked like the Eagles and Manly looked like they had stolen the Broncos or Eels’ pyjamas, the competition frontrunners were impressive and stamped favouritism on the premiership. NQ fans flocked to the Bunnies Knights game in Cairns and the Bunnies revelled in the conditions proving
too classy for the Knights. Back at the SCG this weekend the Bunnies host the Eagles and have their chance to dispel Wayne Bennett’s theory that South’s style of football is too predictable to win the premiership. Penrith is hanging on grimly to third spot on equal points with the Bunnies. The Panthers were apparently done with following injuries to their skipper and halfback but didn’t read that script last week and sent the Dogs back to their kennel with a flea in their ear. Unfortunately, the Panthers now face another Everest following serious injuries to in-form players Elijah Tay-

lor (knee) and Brent Kite (pectoral) and Bryce Cartwright. A big test for them when they play the Dragons at WIN. The Dragons lurk outside the eight after their loss to the Roosters. Brisbane has slipped to 10th and need to win at Suncorp against the underperforming Dogs. On the back of recent performances, neither team deserves a great deal of support. The real movers and shakers are the Storm and Cowboys who sit in sixth and seventh respectively. In round 22 Melbourne blow into Newcastle after crushing the Tigers. It is hard to see the
Knights causing an upset. The Cowboys will be all smiles when they host the Tigers who looked a basket case on Monday night in stark contrast to the well-oiled Melbourne outfit. JT and his cohorts will be out to bag themselves some Tigers in the hunt for another two points. As Jarryd Hayne returns to fitness and grows in confidence the Eels are enjoying a return to form. They smacked the Sharks last weekend and Hayne seems to be the difference between winning and losing - not an ideal formula. The Warriors are back in the eight after their win and their 2014 game of

snakes and ladders continues. Expect another win when the Sharks cross the ditch this weekend. The announced retirement of one of the game’s most popular and well respected players, Roosters captain Anthony Minichello might be the spark for the Roosters to lift and send him out with another premiership. A win against the flailing Titans this weekend will be one step towards that goal.

Last weekend, however, I opted for the theory that rules are made to be broken and better to be supporting NSW aka the Waratahs than the NZedders in the final of the Rugby super 15. What a thrilling game and a great showcase for the game Rugby Union. In fact, it was a game I found far more enjoyable than any rugby league game I have watched for some time. I am sure that I am not alone in saying that the NRL is in grave danger of killing the goose that laid the golden egg. The average supporter like me is becoming disillusioned with NRL players constantly questioning and back chatting the ref; inconsistent and crazy referral decision and the growing number of cheap high shots. Dwindling crowd numbers are testament to the fact that an ongoing media circus seems to be taking over the game and is given far more credence than the game on the paddock. When ardent league followers begin to enjoy a game of union more than league, it spells an ominous warning to those at the top of the tree. Well done to the Tahs and their coach Michael Chieka who showed us how a good game of football, be it league or union should be conducted. Need to be careful I don’t become converted. Casey Cause to reminisce THE recent Gremlins reunion prompted some of the earlier Stanthorpe players to reminisce over their successes as the Stanthorpe Rugby League club. I was reminded that the 1964 Stanthorpe A grade team was successful in winning both the Houghton and St George cups beating Warwick Collegians - Stanthorpe’s arch rivals. One of the members of that side Ron Lawson sadly passed away recently after battling illness for several years. Team mate Barry Brunckhorst recalls Ron as a tough uncompromising competitor. Ron represented Stanthorpe in the Warwick and District side in the now defunct Caltex 500 carnival. All of us involved in Rugby League need to ensure these memories are neither overlooked nor forgotten. Many of the players from the 1964 Stanthorpe side returned to Stanthorpe for the 1999 Stanthorpe Football reunion. The late Ron Lawson is pictured back row second from right.

IMPREZA PERFORMANCE MATT van Tuinen and Erin Kelly, driving a Subaru Impreza WRX Sti 4WD won the Brakes Direct Border Ranges Rally last weekend finishing only a second in advance of Ian Menzies and Robert McGowan in a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 6 4WD. In one of the top performances of the rally, John Spencer and young son Lochlan driving a Classic 2WD Nissan 240RS finished in third spot. The Gary’s Motorsport Tyres NSW Rally Championship section was won by Timothy Wilkins and Denis Neagle in their Nissan Silvia S15 2WD. The Queenslander cry echoed across the Border Ranges with Queensland tasting success in the Queensland Border Shield and so the rally “Origin” fight for the flag has begun. The Rally was not without some high drama. Two competitive stages of the rally were lost on Sunday and the schedule severely disrupted when a crew was airlifted from the scene after “an off”. Reports on the crew indicate that although sore and bruised both have no serious injuries. Rally Clerk of the Course Stephen Davies said, “We introduced a new locally designed tracking system called Rallysafe for this event. “When a car abruptly stops because of an impact the system activates a signal that locates the crew. We had a team of medics on the scene within minutes to assess the situation. “Unfortunately there was a big delay, however, safety is our highest priority.” Representative of the rally organisers the Gold Tweed Motorsporting Club Inc extend their thanks to the local communities for the support and say they are already looking forward to returning in 2015. A STEP BACK IN TIME ANYONE dropping in to the summit Bowls last weekend could have been forgiven for thinking they were in a time warp when they took a look at the greens. It was back to the “Eighties”.

There was plenty of entertainment as 20 bowlers took to the greens for an afternoon of vintage bowls as they endeavoured to manoeuvre old unlops and Henselites across a slick green carefully prepared by Dale Barker. Cries of “you need more grass, much more grass” were pretty common throughout the afternoon as bowlers were left scratching their heads and digging into the memory bank trying to recall just how it used to be done. President Darren Stanley arrived armed with a set of very special 1927 wooden specials and showed that despite their age they can draw a kitty as though they were radar-controlled. Back to the Eighties is proving to be an interesting concept and again proved very popular. Pennants competition is just around the corner - in fact the teams have been selected to represent the Summit club in Inglewood on 31 August. Team 1 - B. Wilmot, J. Zamprogno, D. Stanley and M. Sweeney Team 2 - Q. Stanley, R. Newlands, L. Hartley and R. Capelli Team 3 - T. Sweeney, P. Zamprogno, E. Zamprogno, S. Martin Those selected are advised that practice begins on 16 August. This Saturday promises to be a great day of competition with set play and powerplay. Skips are able to nominate ends where the score is doubled, and player rotation allows for wildcard shots. Should be another entertaining afternoon on the Summit greens. A heads- up for all bowlers that the annual Appleblossom carnival will be held on 25/26 October - dates to be marked in your calendar. LUDLOWS SCOOP THE POOL LAST Saturday’s club competition at the Stanthorpe Golf Club was dominated by the Ludlows. In the competition, sponsored by Gino’s Floorcoverings, Trevor finished with nett 64 and edged out Dylan Barraclough in a countback to secure a win in the men’s division. A nett score of 70 was good enough to give Lyn a four-shot lead in the Ladies section. To compensate for narrowly missing the top prize, Dylan Barraclough claimed the runners- up prize and just about everything else. He finished the afternoon with the best gross of 68 (four under par), share of least putts (25), pro-pins at 1/10 and 9/18 and the pin shot at 3/12. Not much left for the rest really. Richard Reardon managed a share of the putting prize with 25 putts and Fred Wharton col-
lected the remaining pro-pin at 5/14. Linda Kelly collected her third runner-up prize in the last month for her nett 74. Hannah Reeves had best shot at the ladies’ 3/12 pin and ladies winner, Lyn, had best approach at 17. Rachael Hendry had best putting score for ladies, 29 for the round. In the run down a ball each to Len Leigh (65), Keith Green (67), Stephen Kay (67), Tom Fittock (69) and Stephen Hooper (69). This weekend club members will play a single stableford sponsored by club members, Peter Smallwood and Madeline Jarman. Tee off from is from 11am and the time sheet is on the board. NOT MUCH RUMBLIN’ THERE was not much rumbling on the fairway last Friday in Warwick with cold conditions playing havoc with numbers for the Red Roosters Rumble. Only nine players braved the conditions for the nine-hole competition - one of them twice. Sam McLennan went out for a score of 23 points and then again for 21 points to win the day. His mother Mel McLennan pipped him for runner-up with 23 points. Hot chooks for nearest to the pins went to Alan Matthews on 11 and Charlie Morrison on 13. Better conditions on Saturday saw 44 contenders line up in the monthly medal sponsored by Warwick Real Estate. Division One was won by Mitch Carter with 64 nett, runner-up Sam McLennan scored 68 nett. Division Tow went the way of Alan Matthews (nett 66) ahead of John Brack (67). Declan Murphy was the best of the juniors with a score nett 70. Run down balls to Tim Sutton, Geoff Hinze, Doug Rickert and Rodney Macdonald (69) and Craig Locke and Phil McEvoy (70). Pins to Adrian Murphy on five, Nathan Jones on seven, Sam McLennan on nine, Mark Thomas on 11, Gunter Nicklich on 13 and G. Dennis on 16. Conditions were less than ideal for the Ambulance Charity golf day’s four ball ambrose on Sunday, however 56 players went round. The winners with a score of nett 56 were Bevan Hartley, Kath Morrison, Charlie Morrison and Bill Morrison. Runner-up best nett with 56.6 was Jesse Harris, Danny Cox, Brad Rose and Rose Cox. Winner of best gross with 65 off the stick on a countback was Peter Boney, Dave Speedy, Dave Duroux and Chris Fox. Runner-up was Jill Barnes, Ellie Casey, Nathan and Allan Matthews. The Bradman award went to Dave Thompson, Rick Mills, Craig Thompson and Aaron McKennie.

Local Sport Organisers are hoping for better conditons for this Saturday Captain’s day, a single stableford, sponsored by Tony Kahler. Remember if you pay an extra $10 on the day and win the competition you may qualify to play in an event leading up to the PGAChampionship in December at Royal Pines at the Gold Coast. Diary note - Sunday 24 August Holden Scramble. BALLANDEAN LADIES ON THE BALL IT was a busy but successful weekend for the Ballandean ladies football team. On Saturday, ladies player United in a catch-up game and on Sunday backed up for a game against Inter, winning both games. Saturday’s game against Inter was a strange mix with neither team playing up to their potential. The ball was moved around the park and Ballandean certainly found the Open style of play to their liking. Richelle Reardon opened their account with a fine strike from outside the penalty box. Ballandean extended their lead when Kim Sanders scored from outside the penalty box. Kirsty Beckett added another late to give Ballandean a big 3-0 win. The Ballandean Ladies have struggled this season against Inter club, but needed a win in Sunday’s clash to to tie up the top spot going into the semi finals. In a strong performance, Ballandean’s ball play and team work were ultimately too good for Inter. Katrina Marino did well to once again keep a clean sheet. With Sarah Day and Kirsty Beckett combining well for Ballandean’s first and Sarah scoring their second, Ballandean controlled the tempo and style of play going into half time. SCHULTZ ON FIRE KEVIN Schultz was firing on all cyclinders last Satuarday, claiming the Wallangarra Monthly Medal and Putting sponsored by the Wallangarra Railway Cafe. Schultz finished ahead of Gary Sutcliffe who played well enough to claim the putting honours. Schultz also collected one of only two pins - a close shot at nine gave him the pin and kevin Miller was on song on 3/15. This weekend’s organisers are expecting a good turnout in perfect conditons for the Irish Two Ball. GAME AGAINST OAKEY CRUCIAL A loss to Dalby last weekend may prove costly for the Warwick Cowboys as they battle to stay in the top contention for a top-five spot in the TRL. The Wattles have already claimed the Minor Premiership. Following last weekend’s result, Dalby now sits two points clear of Warwick who is in fifth spot but only one point ahead of Valleys. This weekend, in the final roudn of fixtures, the Cowboys play Oakey at Fr Ranger Oval in a crucial game. In other matches, Valleys take on Brothers; Gatton plays Highfields and Dalby takes on the minor premiers. Last weekend against Dalby, the Cowboys squandered a 12-nil lead early in the first half. Dalby fought back when given an opportunity but the homeside still led 18-16 at half time before former Australia international Shaun Berrigan unleashed in the second half to claim four tries. It was no surprise that Berrigan received the three player points for his performance. The match was still in the balance late in the second half and the Cowboys were in no way outclassed. They simply made errors at crucial points in the game handing Dalby opportunities which they capitalised on. Dalby was also successful in the other three grades to make it a clean sweep. With a finals berth so close, the Cowboys are hoping for plenty of support this Saturday night at Fr Ranger Oval.
Phil Davis - a perfect delivery.
Youngster Braydon Spiller certainly looks like he has picked up a few hints from his Dad Mark and grandfathers Ray and Zel.
BOSS BACK AT SPORTERS THE Boss was back to restore some decorum to Sunday Sporters last weekend. Aaron Simmers claimed a win over runner-up Max Smith. Rundowns went to Dick Hilton and Mark Lynam who also had the best gross. Treasurer Clarky who tried to keep things on the straight and narrow while the president was away was happy with his Pin Shot on the third while. Dick Hilton had the Pro Pin for the day. Mick Speer and Phil Zikan were seen escaping with a meat tray each. This Sunday tee-off is back to 8am - 8.30am. A FINE DAY FOR A CLAY SUNDAY was a fine day for a clay or two at the Inglewood SSAA range and a southerly breeze was holding and lifting the clays. The spoils went to visitor Richard Cairns who grabbed first spot in the event ahead of Patrick Moloney. Phil Neal and Tom Donald finished on equal scores and after a countback for the first clay, the former snatched third spot. After the lunch break, it was on to a pistol shoot - a 50-metre Rimfire, timed slow fire event for postal competition. After being denied a placing in the earlier clays, Tom Donald took the honours with Stephanie Dudgeon and Bill Wilson filling the minor placings. MEN’S FOOTBALL SEASON HEATING UP THE 2014 Stanthorpe football season is drawing to a close, and things are certainly hotting up. Last weekend, the Warwick Wolves claimed a major upset and the prized scalp of the United Redback’s A grade men’s side with a 3-1 win in a much-anticipated, top-of-the-table clash. The win ended a 16-game undefeated run by the Redbacks - no doubt an outstanding achievment. In an outstanding effort the Wolves were frst to score before a great goal from Josh Crestani levelled the scores for the Redbacks. It was a game of defence, but finally Cameron Davey broke the deadlock for the Wolves before a late penalty gave them a great psychological win. Both sides were without key players but United coach Stee McEvoy had nothing but praise for the in-form Wolves. The Wolves will welcome back Tim Delaney and Matt O’Brien for coming games while United rested Aason Oudman and Geroge Merritt. In the other men’s game between Ballandean and Inter, Ballandean nailed a 3-1 win in a seesawing game. Ballandean had the better of the first half after Greg Dachs scored Ballandean’s opening goal. Ballandean squandered plenty of chances and allowed Inter Club to capitalise on confusion between Ballandean’s back line and keeper which allowed Inter’s winger to level the scores. In the final five minutes of the game, Daniel Anderson was able to head home the winning goal off a Jack Elms corner. Luke Reardon con-
verted from the penalty spot to give Ballandean a third goal in the dying minutes of a thrilling game. GREMLINS TICKLED PINK THE Stanthorpe Gremlins “Pink Day” was a big success on and off the field. Club president Norm Crisp said the annual cancer fund-raiser was once again a big day. The bubbly flowed in the clubhouse and the ladies decked out in pink enjoyed a fashion parade while on the field the Gremlins decked out in their pink jerseys showed they are in a purple patch of form at the moment. Texas were gallant but no match for the improving Gremlins. Back from a niggling shoulder injury, Damian Petrie said following the game that he was pleased with the effort of his players who faced a whopping 14-1 penalty count to the visitors. Geoff Swan was outstanding leading the way with two tries and nine from 11 conversions. Andrew Thorne, who was named Man of Match, also picked up a double as did, Ben Staley Jason Cobon and Wayne Brown. The Gremlins other try came from fullback Ryan McIntosh who is having an outstanding season for Stanthorpe. Stanthorpe coach Damian Petrie was full of praise for the way the young Terriers side led by Bennett Sutton went about its work and never gave up. The BRL season is drawing to a close with only two fixture games remaining. It looks likely that the Tenterfield Tigers wills secure the Minor Premiership ahead of the Gremlins who this weekend have the bye. The Tigers host the Rams in their final home fixture this weeekend. BUSY WEEKEND FOR COLTS THE Ballandean Junior Colts were another football team with a busy agenda last weekend. On Saturday they played Calrton at the Cf White Oval and on Sunday had to play Inter Club. It was a win and a loss for the juniors who went down 7-3 in a high-scoring game on Saturday. On Sunday, they bounced back against United to claim a 5-1 win. Ballandean players were out to restore some pride in the ranks after their loss to Carlton and after a shaky start settled into some good rythmn. With the teams deadlocked nil-all, Hunter Murphy weaved some magic in the opening stanzas to give Ballandean the opening goal and a lead it would not reqlinquish. Inter was able to pull one back in towards the end of the match with a good strike from outside the penalty box, but a good team performance resulted in an oustanding win. Congratulations to Konrad Winkler who scored his first goal for the club. The Senior Colts added another win to their season with a 5-1 win over Inter on Saturday. Inter was quickly into the action, scoring in the opening phase of the game straight from the kick off. Ballandean were still setting themselves
up. A nine-man Ballandean side set about rebuilding their game and were rewarded when a George Jones free kick left the keeper clutching at air. Ballandean doubled their lead through Brad Knight with another of his determined runs, taking Ballandean to the break up 2-1. Ballandean received a boost at half time with the arrival of an extra player and were able to control the second half with two goals to Ben Rametta and another from Brad Knight. CUTTERS TAKE DOWN THE RAMS WITH their captain John Trindall under suspension and watching from the sideline, the Killarney Cutters had no problems notching up a big win over an understrength Wallangarra Rams last weekend. Dion Galloway led the way for the Cutters, scoring three tries and nailing eight conversions in the 76-10 win.The Cutters, whose form has been up and down all season, showed glimpses of the form that won them the 2013 premiership and the Round Robin trophy to open the season. Wallangarra continues to struggle with numbers and were only able to field 11 players on Saturday which is not an ideal situation. To their credit the Rams players never gave up the fight although they were losing the battle. The Rams tries came from Nathan Close Bruce Binge and Malcolm Boney with Boney Dempsey kicking one conversion. The Cutters finish their season with home games against Texas this weekend and Stanthorpe in their final game, and they will be hoping to continue last weekend’s from into those games and host the knock-out semi final. UNDER 12s SPREADING THEIR WINGS AFTER their success in the recent zone championships, the Stanthorpe Football Under 12s have been invited to play three games this weekend in Toowoomba. They will play Takatsuki, the Toowoomba team and the Under 12 Thunder team this Sunday. Coach Steve McEvoy said he saw this as a great opportunity for the youngsters to get another taste of representative football and to stretch themselves. “These games are going to be against more difficult opponents than we faced before and we know we may struggle, but the experience for our players is priceless and it is an opportunity we couldn’t turn down,” coach Steve McEvoy said and added, “I believe the South West Thunder will be the strongest team while Toowoomba and Takatsuki will be very tough as well - our aim is to be competitive and learn from the experience”.

WARWICK BOWLS THE final of the S/S fours was played on Saturday with Tom Seaniger, Trevor Wright, Max Holder, Edwin Welsh winning 25-16 over George Niven, Alex Naylor, Doug Christensen, Barry Johnstone. Barry’s team stayed in touch till the eighth end but after that Edwin’s team took control of the game. We congratulate both teams on reaching the final but Edwin’s team is our champion for 2014. The club selected pairs have been selected and are on the board and the following bowlers are to play next Saturday: T. Seaniger and E. Welsh v R. Valentine and M. Holder; K. Blomfield and T. Wright v D. Neal and P. Gynther; A. Naylor and D. Warr v L. Tucker and C. Johnson; L. McCosker and B. Black v L. Collie and C. Farrell; P. Summers and N. Rickard v C. McCosker and J. Ruhle; W. Tucker and I. Campbell v G. Asay and P. Collis. The following week S. Valentine and B. Johnstone
will play the winner of E. Welsh’s team and M. Holder’s team and G. Creighton and K. Bryson will play the winner of I. Campbell’s team and P. Collis’ team. This is an interesting experiment playing the men and ladies together in the club selected games, it has built the entries up to 28 and I’m sure will be a great success. We had a good roll up for last Wednesday’s KFC and here are the results: K. Blomfield, K. Cunning, M. Holder 24 v G. Asay, B. Hanson, I. Campbell 17; P. Kerr, C. Farrell, B. Johnstone 29 v P. Summers, G. Kerr, C. Johnson 20; D. Neal, R. Bone, P. Wagner 20 v R. Valentine, W. Tucker, J. Niven 14; L. Tucker, L. Collie, G. Niven 17 v B. Buckel, B. Maunder, S. Valentine 11; L. Meiklejohn, B. Black 27 v C. McCosker, J. Ruhle 23; T. Seaniger, L. McCosker 26 v G. Murphy, T. Wright 13. I don’t know what marble came out of the lucky draw, but it was probably “draw cards”. The winning team was George Niven’s team and the runners-up was Lloyd McCosker’s team. We thank KFC for sponsoring this popular event. There were two social pairs games on Saturday and here are the results: W. Tucker, C. Johnson 22 v L. Tucker, D. Warr 20; G. Asay, P. Gynther 25 v R. Smith, M. Stewart 16. Sunday was sponsored by Cherry Tree and unfortunately was cold and bleak so numbers were down, but we thank Scott Morton for not only giving us vouchers but also providing a scrumptious afternoon tea. The vouchers went to I. Fordyce, W. Tucker, B. Black and the runners-up to R. Valentine, D. Miller, M. Wagner. Here are the results I. Fordyce, W. Tucker, B. Black 34 v L. Tucker, B. Maunder, E. Welsh 10; R. Valentine, D. Miller, M. Wagner 30 v D. Neal, G. Murphy, B. Johnstone 18; B. Hansen, J. Ruhle 23 v S. Valentine, D. Warr 17. Looking ahead we have social on Saturday, club meetings on Tuesday 12 August and Jackpot on Wednesday 13 August. The next sponsor day will be the Bushies on Sunday 24 August.
