Fake $50s flooding Geelong’s retailers By NOEL MURPHY
LOST HEART IN RETURN TO CITY P3
CROOKS are passing counterfeit $50 notes in shops across central Geelong and as far as Waurn Ponds. Police have warned traders to be wary of the bogus notes, which they described as “reasonable quality”. “There’s been a steady increase in passing fake notes over the last month,” Geelong Police Senior Constable Adam Niksic told the Independent. “They’re hitting the shopping centres in Geelong and smaller shops too, basically everywhere in the CBD. “We’re warning traders to just be wary of them. “If notes don’t feel right or look right, don’t accept them and call us.” Police said some of the notes had been in circulation for a long time and could be difficult to identify until they began to deteriorate through wear and tear. Other fake notes were introduced more recently, leading to the current spate. Sen Const Niksic said offenders commonly targetted young sales assistants at busy times when their attention might be distracted. A shopping centre assistant told the Independent she rejected a $50 bill recently after thinking it resembled a photocopied note. “They tried to give me a $50 note, which was a funny pale yellow,” the teenage girl said. “I just said, ‘Sorry’, and gave it back to them. Then they gave me a $20 note.” The girl notified her employer, who contacted authorities. Police wanted CBD traders to be wary, to know officers were investigating complaints and to “bring them in” if they received any counterfeit notes. Geelong Retail Network chairman Mark Edmonds said the fake $50 notes had been passed in stores at Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre, including at his wife’s business. Continued page 5

NEWS that the region’s oldest music event, Geelong Schools Music and Movement Festival was on again this week brought back a few memories. The 68-year-old festival now includes students from prep to VCE and includes song, dance, circus acts and rock bands as well as traditional choirs and orchestras. It’s a long haul from the days when a nervous host of mismatched pre-pubescent voices trod the boards in the old pre-GPAC Plaza Theatre to belt out Funiculi Funicula and When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again. GHOST Busters started it all and these days there’s all kinds of “busters” out there: Bark Busters, boredom busters, Stain Busters,

stress busters, even belly busters for us more mature blokes. Geelong’s latest addition to the line-up: Redundancy Busters, a free support group for redundant Geelong workers, meeting Wednesday evenings at Deakin’s waterfront campus. And if there’s something around the place that needs busting, its redundancy. IF ANYONE’S wondering what the agribusiness-led economic recovery will look like, think pigs. And don’t be too surprised if a glut of bacon and ham hits the market soon, with a piggery proposing an expansion project to house a whopping total of 4492 porkers off Cooper Rd, west of Meredith.
That’s a heck of a lot of snorting – an possibly some squealling from the neighbours, too. WHILE all eyes will be on the big Freo match in Geelong this Saturday, a Cats milestone will quietly play out on the somewhat lesshallowed ground of Ballarat’s Eureka Stadium. Against Ballarat Roosters, Jack Hollmer will set a games record for most matches by a serving VFL-listed Cat. However, the total will be less than a third of Ian Nankervis’s 325 games for the seniors. Hollmer’s record needs only 95 matches thanks to a VFL reshuffle in 2000. Still a record’s a record, so our congratulations to Jack.
Grove ‘space’ set for a showdown By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN BATTLELINES have been drawn over a controversial $1 million performance space for Ocean Grove Park. A group of park association members has won its push for a special general meeting on 23 August to restrict the committee to financial decisions under $20,000, which would stop the proposal. But the committee included a Save the Park Performance Space flyer with the meeting notice, recommending a vote against the rule changes. “The project is now ready to proceed, the funds are available, the tenders have closed under budget and permits are in place. The funds will be forfeited if the performance space does not go ahead and there will be no cultural facility for Ocean Grove in the foreseeable future,” the flyer said. Association member and performance space opponent Christine Brooks said the committee had never committed to such a “financial burden”, requiring an intitial outlay of $150,000 and annual costs of $41,000.
Link ‘to cut 20 minutes from Melbourne drive’ GEELONG motorists will save up to 20 minutes driving to Melbourne with East West Link, according to an independent study. Premier Denis Napthine released the results this week, saying the report demonstrates “the need to get on with building East West Link as soon as possible”. The proposed $8 billion project would link Melbourne’s eastern and western suburbs with an 18-kilometre tollway. Mr Napthine said the TraffiXGroup study on East West Link found
“massive reductions in travel times for motorists”. “That’s valuable time people should be spending with their families and friends. This is valuable time costing our tradespeople, businesses and freight industry every day. “The outcomes from the report show that some people could run home faster than driving at the moment.” Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss confirmed $3 billion in federal funding for East West Link, noting the savings for Geelong motorists. “Once the full East West Link in-
cluding the western section is completed motorists will save 15 to 20 minutes in travel time when coming from Geelong, Werribee, Altona and Laverton to the city and other key destinations.” Labor Member for Lara John Eren said the forecast time saving for Geelong motorists was dodgy. “Given the Napthine Government has refused to release a business case or full traffic modelling, how can these figures stand up to public scrutiny? In any case, even if they could be believed that they would…build this road it would take more than a decade to be built.
“In contrast, Labor has an immediate plan to deal with traffic congestion and will build the Westgate distributor to take heavy trucks off the Westgate. “Labor’s Regional Rail Link which opens in 2015, will also allow more peak services to and from Melbourne taking more cars off our roads.” Mr Eren questioned why the coalition failed to promote its “dud” East West Link before the last election. “The Geelong community wants action on congestion now, not disingenuous spin from a Premier about projects that stretch into the nevernever.”

Auditor-General sounds warning on Gordon
TAFE finances ‘at risk’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A “PATTERN of deterioration” has increased financial risk at Gordon Institute of TAFE, according to a Victorian Auditor-General report. Gordon is among 14 Victorian TAFEs whose risk rating increased from low to medium in John Doyle’s report. The report, released on Wednesday, revealed that Gordon’s finances fell from a surplus of more than $13.1 million in 2012 to $589,000 last year. Gordon’s expenses rose $12.4 million between 2012 and 2013, almost accounting for the surplus decline. Mr Doyle said Gordon’s finances mirrored a “significant decline in the financial sustainability of the sector” over the past five years. “Disappointingly, performance reporting across the sector remains poor,” he said.
“These results suggest that many TAFEs have yet to effectively adapt to changes to the funding model announced in May 2012, designed to make vocational and employment training funding arrangements more sustainable. “The changes have increased the sector’s reliance on other revenue streams, such as student fee revenue, in the contestable environment.” Mr Doyle said TAFEs were $239 million in debt, an increase of $16.4 million in 2013 from loans to five institutes including Gordon. Gordon faced downward trends in three key areas including its underlying result, the capacity for selffinancing and in capital replacement, he said. State Government and the opposition blamed each other for the parlous financial state of the TAFE sector.
Higher Education Minister Nick Wakeling said the former Labor Government bungled its attempt to reform the sector. The changes exposed TAFEs to an open market “without preparing them for, or supporting them through, the process of structural adjustment”, he said. “The report shows Victoria’s TAFEs are still working through the reform process and some are struggling to adjust to the contestable environment introduced by Labor in 2008.” Labor shadow higher education minister Steve Herbert said Napthine Government funding cuts “wreaked havoc” on the TAFE system. “This report paints a bleak future for Victorian TAFE providers. “Students have seen a drop of over $100 million in state government operational funding to TAFE, as well as massive fee hikes, large-scale
staff sackings, and the outsourcing of teaching.” Gordon chief Lisa Line said the report “should be considered in light of the significant changes”, which “resulted in TAFEs reviewing their operations”. Ms Line said the report “clearly illustrates that the institute’s financial sustainability is strong and one of the strongest in the sector”. “Over the last five years the Gordon’s underlying result and liquidity has been the highest of all TAFEs.” Ms Line said Gordon’s cash reserves were $52.8m, one of the highest in the TAFE sector. “This has placed us in a positive position as we invest in innovative strategies to assist the organisation moving forward. The institute has a comprehensive plan aimed at continuing to improve its financial sustainability through a number of avenues.”

Jobs agenda PLANNING process for a futuristic $320 million sustainable farm proposed for Avalon will be high on the agenda at Geelong’s next council meeting, according to Mayor Darryn Lyons. He said council would consider “fast-tracking” the 1000-job proposal by handing planning responsibility to minister Matthew Guy.
School promise A $5 MILLION building project would rejuvenate Whittington Primary School under a Labor state government, opposition leader Daniel Andrews has announced. Mr Andrews also promised the local contractors would carry out the work on rebuilding the “great local school”.

PLAYWRIGHT Mary Anne Butler feels as though she has come full circle. The Darwin author is back in Geelong, where she spent four years at Geelong Grammar and had her career in theatre sparked by an impromptu performance in a school play. Not only is she back with her latest work, Highway of Lost Hearts, she is back treading the boards after rediscovering the joy in acting. “At school the lead actor got sick, so they pulled me in to replace her. I was 17 and it was my first brush with the theatre,” Mary Anne explained. “That impromptu performance was so significant I decided to audition for the National Institute of Dramatic Art. “I didn’t get in because I was too young but I received a lot of encouragement and five years later I ended up going to the Victorian College of the Arts. “It was funny because after that I lost the joy of acting and my transition to writing happened pretty quickly, I was a lot happier. “But I’m performing in this play and having a ball because the director, Lee Lewis, really encouraged me to get back on the boards. “It’s bizarre because I found the joy of acting again. It’s been an interesting circle to come around. “I spent my pivotal years here and remember it well.” Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) describes Highway of Lost Hearts as a heart-warming play about a woman, a dog, a campervan and 4500-kilometres of wide open road. Central character Mot wakes to find her heart missing from her chest, so she sets out in search of it with her dog as “co-pilot”.

Gas shortages strike on coast By NOEL MURPHY TORQUAY homes are reeling from weeks of chronic gas shortages amid a recent cold spell, leaving residents shivering as vital heaters and hot water services shut down. Gas retailer SP Ausnet said the highest demand in five years caused a pressure drop during extreme cold last week, when snow fell in the nearby Otways. Residents have complained about gas
stoppages for weeks on Surfcoast Community Facebook page. But often the cuts have meant one household service drops out while another might work – viz, heaters work but not hotwater, and vice versa. The gas shortage has covered all of Torquay and Jan Juc and back toward Geelong. “If you have both services on gas, your house supply cacks itself and one
has to be turned off,” one resident said. “I’m in old Torquay. Us old-timers here always have both for back-up – gas used to be bottles and power poles used to explode!” SP Ausnet’s spokesperson Jonathon Geddes said the company notified 4000 residents via calls and SMS alerts and took action to maximise network pressures when high demand and cold weather were predicted.
“We received 18 reports of low gas pressure, called these customers the following day to ensure their supply was restored and sent crews to four properties to relight appliances upon request,” Mr Geddes said. SP Ausnet was working toward an additional supply to service the burgeoning township in the coming year. “We’re in the planning phase to construct a secondary high-pressure gas sup-
ply from Geelong into Torquay in the next 12 months. We’re committed to providing a safe and reliable gas supply to Torquay and the surrounding area. “Again, we apologise to those impacted by this isolated incident.” SP AusNet said it had carried out works costing more than $580 million to bring natural gas to more than 92,000 homes and businesses in western Victoria over the last five years.
Fake notes do rounds
Lights cam fines down

He cautioned sales assistants to be wary of shoppers creating slight disturbances during busy times and passing off the notes. “My wife runs a business at Waurn Ponds and one went through her business,” Mr Edmonds said. “When you compare them with the real ones, the difference is quite obvious. “It happened while they were busy, someone created a bit of fuss, they went to pay with a $50 note then pulled back to look for something smaller and said that was all they had. “People were in line behind and everyone was trying to get the transaction done quickly. “The notes are smaller and slightly off-colour. The trick is to have a good look at any 50 - they stand out because they don’t look right but if it’s a busy day you don’t notice it. “That extra two seconds can help get your balance right at the end of the day.” Geelong Police can be contacted on 5225 3100.
FINES at a controversial red light camera intersection in Norlane have dropped by more than half, according to the latest Department of Justice statistics. The intersection at The Boulevard and Melbourne Rd raked in more than $400,000 in fines every three months last year. Twelve months previously it collected $67,726. Just 447 drivers were fined $161,833 in January to March this year compared to 1031 coughing up $372,254 between October and December last year, a drop of $210,421. Road Safety Camera Commissioner Gordon Lewis investigated the intersection after motorists complained to the Independent and subsequently to his office. He concluded driver impatience caused the high number of infringements because the “vast majority of vehicles were photographed entering the intersection against a red arrow when they were the last vehicles in the queue”. “However, VicRoads has made changes to the intersection, which will greatly facilitate access for vehicles turning right.”

Abduction fears on peninsula By NOEL MURPHY DRYSDALE Primary School has warned parents to pick up their children from school after an alleged child-abduction attempt last week. Principal Phil Dunlop-More also called for parents to talk to their children about strategies to adopt if strangers approach them. The warning and advice followed reports a man tried to en-

a white van reportedly trying to pick up a girl after school outside Drysdale Hotel. Mr Dunlop-More described the latest incident as “serious”. “A man tried to persuade one of our students into his vehicle,” he said in a letter to parents. “This happened as the stu-

Bullies forgotten as Jordan lightens up for the ring ‘Invisible crime’ threat to society
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
JORDAN Lukies never imagined he would ever enter a kickboxing ring. The 23-year-old was bullied at school for being fat and, although the harrassment faded as he grew older, he remained “quite a bit overweight”. But in two weeks Jordan will face a battle of a different kind as he tests the work he has done in the past two years, stripping his body from 93kg down to 74 kg. The Portarlington-based muay thai exponent is on an undercard at Warriors Way 10, run by former kickboxing champion and promoter Mark ‘Hammer’ Castagnini. For Jordan, the biggest battle was fought in his mind, not in a gym or kickboxing ring. “The biggest battle is in the mind rather than around your beltline,” he asserted. “It comes down to believing in yourself, convincing yourself you can do it. It’s your self-talk. “I’m just an ordinary bloke
who’s made some choices. “Don’t think about it, just do it. If you think twice you will talk yourself out of it. Start right now, don’t wait until tomorrow, just get started.” The plasterer got started when he saw a friend shed a few kilos and noted how much it benefited him. “I didn’t like the way I looked and I wanted to make a big change in my life. It took a year to lose 20kg but I wanted better for myself. “It’s never too late to knock a few kilos off. I did it with entertaining exercise, doing fun activities, making sure your workout session is not boring. “The kickboxing is about confronting fears. There’s nothing better than being friends with fear because when you then confront the fear it doesn’t have a hold on you anymore.” Jordan, who trains with Chris Bradshaw at his Top Tier Muay Thai gym, already ALREADY A WINNER: Jordan Lukies has overcome bullies and his fear to step into the ring 20kg has his second fight lined up. lighter. INVISIBLE crime is a growing industry as cybercrooks plot the digital footprint of a growning number of victims, a Geelong academic has warned. John Lamp said criminals illegally monitoring digital transactions on myki and credit cards could steal personal and business information to use against the owners without them knowing. “If someone breaks into your home and steals your possessions, it’s a crime you can easily understand. Most crimes are offences against property or the person,” Mr Lamp wrote on academic website The Conversation. “As we move to the information economy, criminal activities are also moving into the information economy. “What is more worrying is increasing evidence of largely invisible crimes. Often all these bits and pieces of information are completely innocuous until they are put together to create digital footprints of the victim’s movement within our social fabric. “The victim often has no idea it is happening until the information is used against them. Information is the one item that can be stolen without the owner being aware at the time of the loss of property.” Mr Lamp, an information and business analytics lecturer at Deakin University, wanted laws broadened to cover crime from the accessing of seemingly insignificant personal details. “As with sharing the keys to our house or car, we are beginning to perceive the same vulnerability with our daily digital footprints.”

Ex-school sites put up for sale
RELAX. I CAN COME TO YOU.
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN FORMER school sites figure prominently on a sales list of government land around the region. The list was published for the first time on a Department of Treasury and Finance website in the interests of “transparency”, according to Victorian assistant teasurer Gordon Rich-Phillips. The list includes the status of ready-for-sale sites across Victoria as well as information on recently-completed land sales and properties being prepared for future sale. The future sale list includes Lethbridge Primary School and a third parcel of land at a former Western Heights Secondary College Barton campus site in Bell Park. Norlane High School is on the market after being passed in at auction. The 6.3-hectare site is advertised as “the ultimate development site”, zoned residential one

Recent sales included Anglesea Primary School selling for $3 million and the first two Barton campus parcels, realising $8.55 million. Two former Department of Environment and Primary Industry depots are also on the sale block, one at South Geelong and the other at Camperdown.
Breakwater’s Haworth Crt horse stables and seven residential lots in Rollins Rd, Bell Post Hill on land left over from the ring road reserve are also for private sale. Mr Rich-Phillips said the website ensured all Victorians had access to the status of Sate Government land sales. “Proceeds of the Government’s highly-successful land sales program are reinvested back into important new infrastructure such as schools, roads, public transport and hospitals,” he said. “The subsequent redevelopment of sites by the new owners has wide-reaching benefits for communities. “It’s important that surplus sites that have sat dormant on the Government’s books for many years are going back to the market to be turned into new developments in which people live or work. “This also creates investment and jobs as they are developed.”

Landcare said Ms Coulson’s work with Surf Coast and Inland Plains Network (SCIPN) had “garnered highly respected community support”. “Her vision and determination in addressing a complex rabbit issue in her community led her to pioneer a community-led approach in her area. “The success of the program resulted in a shift toward natural-resource management in the area, with her approach being used as a leading pest-control model for groups around Victoria.” Ms Coulson was delighted to be a finalist. “Empowering the local community to embrace land-care and work collectively toward a sustainable future has been the forefront of my work over the years,” she said. Landcare said People’s Choice voting was open until 6pm 17 September at landcareonline.com.au.

Ruth Marshall, an Australian artist based in New York, has spent years researching museum collections and has transformed scientific specimens into beautiful works of art. Her interest in animals, art and science has produced a stunning collection of works representing endangered species through the medium of knitting. Each of her hand knitted one-of-a-kind textiles is interpreted from individual animals researched from museums and zoos around the world. By focusing our attention on the issue of species decline, Ruth Marshall also reminds us of the intrinsic natural beauty that inspired us to covet these creatures in the first place. Included in the exhibition is a series of Australian animals studied from specimens at the Melbourne Museum. The ‘Vanished into Stitches’ exhibition at the National Wool Museum will showcase the largest amount of her work in a single exhibition.

Drysdale say on roads By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN LONG-SUFFERING Drysdale and Clifton Springs motorists have a chance to push their case to VicRoads in a new transport survey. Community organisations have pointed to congestion at the Jetty Rd roundabout and the need for a Drysdale bypass for several years. VicRoads regional director William Tieppo said the survey would feed information into a Drysdale road network planning study. “It’s essential the community’s
thoughts are captured. We want to know what they see as the key issues and what is important to them,” Mr Tieppo said. “We (will) use the results to prioritise project objectives and narrow down options, which will then be further investigated and developed.” Mr Tieppo said the study would lead to the development of a business case to improve transport around Drysdale. “It will take about 12 months to complete the study and prepare a business case for improvements and it is
our intention to come back to the community with our results and possible options,” he said. The survey is online at vicroads. vic.gov.au and available at Springdale Neighbourhood Centre. VicRoads has also announced the closure of the Great Ocean Road for four days from 24 August for essential upgrade works to replace a large drainage pipe under the road. Mr Tieppo said the iconic tourist road would be closed between Wye River and Kennett River.
“We’re aware this is going to mean a significant challenge for the local community and drivers travelling between Apollo Bay and Lorne. “While closing the road is unavoidable, VicRoads will run 24-hour shifts to endeavour work gets done as quickly and as safely as possible. “It’s important to make sure we reach as many people as possible so no one is surprised and can plan their journey in advance. We encourage the entire community to spread the word.” More information is available at vicroads.vic.gov.au/greatoceanroad.
Near-death shock ends in thanks for Phil’s saviours By NOEL MURPHY VETERAN marathon runner Phil Sage was shocked when he collapsed with a cardiac arrest during a baseball game at Deakin University two months ago. Fortunately for him, the shock was administered by fellow baseballers with an onsite defibrillator and saved his life. Not that the Ocean Grove engineer remembers anything of the incident - a small mercy, he suggests – but he knows he was lucky that enough people and gear were on hand to keep him alive. “No one guy or gal knew everything to do but between them they knew everything to do,” he said. “I had no idea (of any heart-attack risk) beforehand. I’d even been to the doctor a couple times. “I used to run marathons – I’ve run 16 – and each year I’d do a full cardio check-up.
“The last I ran was probably four years ago but the job’s cut into my running time and I got overweight and out shape, even though I was still jogging or walking.” A father of five, Mr Sage spent 17 days in hospital after Ambulance Victoria paramedics collected him at a game between his Deakin Blues club and East Belmont Saints. “I can’t say enough thanks to the guys who responded that day, from my team and the Saints. “Two ambulance units arrived after the teams called 000 and put flags on the road. They parked on the homeplate, literally. “They credit the efforts of the baseball teams in saving crucial time by getting the equipment on me and getting me out of there and into hospital as quickly as they could.” Mr Sage said he played baseball for years as kid and had just returned to the game this year.
SHOCKED: Phil Sage with one of his rescuers, paramedic Scott Kerr.

Rain variable in a record month RAINFALL varied greatly across the region in July. Some parts of central Geelong received only around 70 per cent of the normal rain for the month, while southern and western suburbs like Herne Hill, Belmont, Highton and Grovedale recorded above the 30-year average of 44mm. Breakwater only measured 29.2mm and Inverleigh was just in the middle ’teens. However, the Otways catchment areas received well-above average. Mt Sabine, at the head of the catchment, recorded 245mm, although West Barwon Reservoir received less. Barwon Water recorded the storages at 81.7 per cent capacity this week, about 10 per cent higher than the same time last year. A new record was created early on the last day of the month with the warmest minimum ever for July, 13.8C. It occurred amid strong north-westerlies just in advance of an intensive cold front and an Antarctic blast. The previous warmest July night was 12.9C in 1988. Mild nights and cold days characterised July 2014. Geelong’s daily minimums averaged 7.2C, which was 1.6C above the latest 30-year mean minimum. Maximums averaged 14C, almost identical to the 30-year mean daily maximum. Overall, the month was .85C warmer than average, probably to the disbelief of many residents. The lowest overnight minimum was .9C on July 22 and the warmest day was six days later with 18.4C, neither of which was a record. My second edition of Weather Wonders of Geelong will soon be available at on geelongweatherservices.com.au. The colour photos by Peter Redmond and Phil Thomson as well as other local photographers look brilliant. Waurn Ponds Library will host a book launch on 10 September, with registrations to attend available by phoning 5272 6010.

Golden finish for Geelong athletes GEELONG athletes have finished Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games with two gold and a pair of bronze medals. Netballers Madison Robinson and Tegan Caldwell won gold when the Diamonds’ defeated New Zealand by 18 goals on the back of a double lead in the third quarter. Robinson said on television the games win topped off an incredible year, which included a premiership with Melbourne Vixens
and followed twice being left out of Australian international teams. “It’s amazing to have that gold medal now,” she said. “It’s been an incredible year. This is most definitely at the top of the list now.” Ocean Grove bowler Matt Flapper skippered Australia to bronze in the men’s four, defeating India 15-14. Geelong’s Jake Benstead won bronze in 73kg-class judo last week.

Keep cyclists off our footpaths pedestrian and no TAC insurance cover. The footpath is already shared with cyclists aged up to 12, skateboards and scooters. Dr Rossiter’s other point about cyclists on footpaths colliding with cars exiting properties is equally valid. Leave the law as it is and make roads safer for all cyclists. I urge readers to contact VicRoads to oppose changes to the existing law. T van Loon Leopold

ted to unemployed Geelong folk. At the same time he and fellow councillors are considering allowing fracking, which could trash that very land. If they really care for our region and our people they will dismiss the idea of fracking and concentrate on clean, green projects that will enhance our reputation and, hopefully, create many more jobs. Dot Pearce Grovedale
Bludger delusion
Fracking for losers
Food was fine
WHERE do we go from Michael Gamble’s letter in the 25 July Independent, decrying the numbers on disability pensions? Mr Gamble must have a magical third eye to be so confident that he is correct, so would he also suggest, given the massive industry closures we have been witnessing, that even the newly and soon-to-be unemployed might become some sort of “bludgers” in time? Where does he get his information or does he sit at home pontificating on other such subjects, also with an absolute certainty closely approaching delusion? No mention of the abysmal performance of our major politicians, who seem unable to maintain a viable economy and associated employment regardless of which team colours they display. And do past politicians, with their over-generous, un-Constitutional entitlements, qualify as some sort of bludger, too? I think they do but it remains to see whether the oracle, Mr Gamble, thinks so. Recent internet reports focused on governments hiring social media-savvy people to bombard us with pro-government propaganda or to debunk nonmainstream media opinions, which some governments perceive as a threat. Mr Gamble’s comments seem like something of this ilk but at worst they stimulated the basest of emotions regarding the situation of vulnerable, unwell, people. Maybe it’s time to quit now, Mr Gamble, because, as I always say, if you haven’t got anything good to say, don’t say anything. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West
Thanks for something THE PUBLIC response to the closure of Alcoa has focused on the effect it will have on the retrenched workers. We all wish them the very best for the future. There has also been the usual smug comments from the Greens, secretly rejoicing yet another socalled big polluter had bitten the dust. However, I want to thank Alcoa, Ford and all those other industries that have supported Geelong over the past five-plus decades. Not only have these and other companies provided steady and well-paid employment for many Geelong workers, they have also pumped millions of dollars in so many ways back into the Geelong region. I for one am sorry to see them go. Geelong and its people have done very well out of Alcoa and Ford. I take my hat off to them. These companies did not want to close but the federal government’s obsession with free trade has slowly and surely decimated Australian industry over the years, so their hands were forced. So thank you again, Alcoa and Ford, for a job well done. Hopefully someday in the future we may yet see you both back in the Geelong region. Alan Barron Grovedale
Farming over fracking GEELONG Mayor Darryn Lyons says 1000 jobs will be created under a plan to build a $320 million sustainable farming precinct at Avalon (Independent, 1 August). Even if most of those jobs are only during construction we would all be ecstatic if they were allot-
IF OUR Mayor wants to prevent “beautiful Geelong” becoming a wasteland I urge him and other councillors to say ‘no’ to fracking. Apart from a few in retail and hospitality, there would not be new jobs because fracking companies use fly-in-fly-out labour. However, thousands of Australian jobs could disappear if our agricultural land was wrecked in pursuit of gas for export. We might also have to import food grown in conditions over which we would have no control, all for the benefit of someone else. I would call this a lose-lose. Lee Gladwell Grovedale
Fracking at fault FRACKING is drilling and injecting fluids including chemicals into the ground at high pressure to extract gas from rock. Victoria has a fault line across the state, taking in the Otways area including Anglesea. Oklahoma in the US has experienced over 2000 earthquakes so far this year near injecting areas which are also on a fault line. Should we take the risk of injury and damage to property by allowing this activity to take place? Pricilla Wright Newtown
Reserve a space EVER since the Ocean Grove’s green hall was demolished 25 years ago, residents have been asking council for a replacement community hall. This need was most-recently identified at last year’s inquiry-by-design workshop as well as in submissions to a recently released urban design framework. While council has since stated that such a hall is not in its immediate plans, this was not always the case. ln council’s Ocean Grove structure plan 2007/2008 it was recommended that a facility be built on a Tuckfield St/The Parade reserve and that it should include car parking, viewing platforms, tourist information, picnic facilities and an amphitheatre. While the need for a performance space is acknowledged by residents, the community remains deeply divided regarding its proposed location in Ocean Grove Park. A significant number believe the park, is under increasing developmental pressure and infrastructure-creep due amid higher-density living. Here is an opportunity for City of Greater Geelong to demonstrate both foresight and leadership and build the proposed performance space at the Council-owned Tuckfield St/The Parade reserve. In a win-win people would get to enjoy a day on the green with the ocean as a backdrop, while the park would remain passive open space with uninterrupted sounds of nature. Wayne McKinlay Ocean Grove

It is a vital, free and relatively safe exercise for so many, including senior citizens, parents with prams and little ones, those with walking aids and anyone recovering from broken bones or other injuries. Colleges set to shake up Bard By EMILY IANNELLO THREE Geelong colleges for either boys or girlsonly have joined forces for a production starring both sexes. Students from St Joseph’s, Clonard and Sacred Heart colleges will appear in All Shook Up next week, performing a script based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night but set to the music of Elvis Presley. Producer David Gallaher said the cast of 75 included 12 lead roles, chosen through an extensive casting process. “It was very tough for the girls to get roles. It’s hard when there are 200 applicants and you’re only going to take 35,” Gallaher said. “We’re very lucky we have an experienced team of music directors, vocalists and choreographers – many of them are involved with local theatre companies. That’s one of the reasons the school productions have been so successful over the years.” Gallaher said teachers had contributed to making the set and costumes, while local theatre companies also helping out. “Every theatre company in town has lent us some form of costuming.” St Joseph’s year 12 student Ryan Bentley said the audition process involved dancing, singing and acting, which landed him the lead role of Chad. “It’s quite a different role for me, personally. Chad is a very cool character, very suave.” Bentley said the tough rehearsals involved two days of practice a week since the beginning of the year and nine day-long Sunday sessions. “It’s quite a long rehearsal schedule but it’s also been nice and relaxing in between studying.” Bentley said learning to play the guitar and to “mimic playing” it had been a challenge. “One of the female leads also becomes a guy,

St Joseph’s Jack Callahan, who plays Jim, found the audition process nerve-wracking. “I don’t have the experience Ryan does but it was definitely rewarding in the end,” he said. Callahan was looking forward to his singing debut on stage. “It’s a really exciting experience”. Callahan said the co-ed play was a “good experience…besides the fact we get to mingle with the girls”. But it’s long been the magnetic rhythm of the Blues Brothers’ music – its danceability – that’s maintained its audience in pubs and clubs where tribute bands such as Peter Caffyn’s Sweet Home Chicago perform. Caffyn’s bringing the show to Geelong’s RSL next week, complete with songs Shake Your Tail Feather, Everybody Needs Somebody, Sweet Home Chicago and many other Blues Brothers classics. The band’s costumed minishow pays tribute to the great blues and soul music of Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Ray Charles and of course the Blues Brothers, and has punt-
ers kicking up their heels until the midnight hour. Caffyn, the band’s musical director and trumpet player, said the tribute act was “very honest to the songs.” “The music is quite timeless, it’s really good stuff to play. We have some dance routines going on and get the audience involved as well. “We’re a five-piece with all the Otis Redding songs, Blues Brothers songs and some other classic soul songs from the era. “The response is great. It goes down very well, it’s a very danceable sort of music.” Sweet Home Chicago plays Geelong RSL on 16 August.

BELUSHI and Aykroyd might have been one of the most shortlived comedy duos in Hollywood history but they’ve also proven one of the most durable. Their 1980 musical comedy classic, The Blues Brothers – with the unlikely duo playing Jake and Ellwood Blues on a mission from God to save the orphanage of Sister Mary Stigmata – packed cinemas for years. In Melbourne, fans lined up to see the movie each week for a couple of decades. The film’s catchy blues and soul songs have become immensely popular anthems, moving almost into the category of traditional music.

Geelong set for first Italian festival GEELONG will have its own Italian celebration with an inaugural one-day Ferragosto Festival at Capri Receptions on 24 August. The festival’s Italian namesake is held in August to mark a period of rest after intense labour, usually agricultural. ARPA Productions’ Dom Arpa said Sydney’s version of the festival inspired him to establish Geelong’s Ferragosto. “In Italy, August is when they take time off work to enjoy the middle of summer,” he explained. “Geelong and Melbourne don’t
have a celebration like this, so I thought why not bring something so cultural and entertaining to town.” Arpa hoped Geelong would embrace the five-hour event, featuring a traditional four-course Italian feast, crooner Tony Pantano with surprise support acts, a Mondo music merchandise stall and raffle prizes from local traders. “It’s a very family-orientated event. We created it to give Geelong a new element of entertainment. “In the future we want to make it bigger and better. We want it to grow into a very big event.”

Perrettis offers greater choice TRADITIONAL Italian-style pizza, pasta and meals restaurant Perrettis is expanding its base literally. The Grovedale eatery is broadening its range of pizzas to include old favourites in a variety of sizes, including traditional toppings. But the popular gourmet range of pizzas introduced by owner and chef Simon Parrott will still be available, along with an expanded menu of pastas and sauces. Perrettis is now well into its second year, having established a reputation in the community and earning plenty of thumbs up from regular patrons. “Our loyal customers gave us some great feedback, so we’ve listened and made some changes to the menu as a result,” Simon says. “People wanted to be able to order from the more-traditional styles they’ve been used to in both pizza and pasta dishes. “It helps make our menu more family-friendly and versatile so its offers something for everyone.” The restaurant is licensed, with a selection of local and Italian wines, beers and ciders available at reasonable prices. Using quality ingredients, Perrettis’ gourmet pizzas are thin-

SkateFit a fun way to fitness SKATEFIT is a fun new way of using rollerblades or old-school roller skates to improve fitness in a social environment. Based at Rollerway Newtown, SkateFit is an exciting, fun fitness program specifically designed to provide a smooth and safe progression through skating skills while getting fit and becoming a competent roller skater. SkateFit shows how fitness doesn’t have to mean tedious hours on a treadmill. Participants on both quad and inline skates are welcome to take part in specifically designed lessons delivered by the highest-quality coaches. Local trainer Ashlie, who is both a SkateFit instructor and state roller hockey coach says the program is based on a broad range of activities and proven methods for fitness development. “Skating is used as the key means to achieve fitness so that groups of adults can have a ball getting fit without the drudgery of repetitive gym programs or nasty boot-camp approaches,” she says. “The low-impact and varied skating and nonskating activities can burn hundreds of calories each hour while participants develop balance, coordination, strength and all-round fitness. “Feel more confident, look better, feel great, and get rolling!”

Taekwondo for body and mind In short, taekwondo is about respect, honour and courage. And it’s an invaluable asset for females and youngsters, providing them with self-protection and self-assurance. Manni’s Elite Taekwondo, with centres in Geelong, Torquay and Ocean Grove, is focussed as much on the positive mental aspects of martial arts as the physical side. “We focus on a family environment in our club,” he says. “We pay particular attention to the art of taekwondo - respect for yourself, your family and oth-
ers, loyalty and faithfulness, spirit and integrity.” The physical business end of Elite Taekwondo is a valuable discipline with a multitude of benefits. It can help kids who are either bullies or being bullied, offers a terrific cardio workout, enhances personal safety for individuals and families and boosts self-confidence and discipline. Taekwondo is a value life skill, a tremendous asset that enhances quality of life for young and old and everyone in between, says Manni.
1148186-KC32-14
TAEKWONDO is more than just the martial art many people think, says Elite Taekwondo head instructor Manni. With 40 years’ experience under his belt, he says the Korean martial arts - considered one of the most scientific, systematic forms - is a wider, more-rewarding discipline than just sport alone. It has a strong social aspect - a very family-oriented environment in fact, he says. Importantly, it’s all about selfesteem, health, fitness, motivation.

It’s all about the variety at Vallis IGA Highton. ronment without the hustle and bustle of larger stores. Owner/manager Joe Valenti says the abundance of fantastic weekly IGA specials and in-store promotions means family needs are always looked after.
“After 35 years’ experience at our larger store in Hamlyn Heights we’ve learnt to recognise what our customers and the community look for in a store like ours and hope that we’ve successfully conveyed that,” Joe says. “Quality and service is the main focus and friendly staff is always there for the customer. Our fresh food areas are always maintained with freshness and quality. “If Vallis IGA Highton isn’t your local yet, pay a visit – you’ll be pleasantly surprised.” Vallis IGA Highton is open 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 7pm weekends.

Scott bobs sideshow
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
THE sideshow of Steve Johnson’s shock citing by the match review panel won’t derail Geelong’s preparations for its “biggest game of the year”, according to coach Chris Scott. “Irrespective of the sideshow this week it (the Fremantle game) is 99 per cent of our focus,” Scott declared at his weekly media conference. “And after this media conference it will be 100 per cent of my focus.” And the billing of the game as a grudge match also left him cold. “When you’re playing the contenders the stakes are raised – there’s no point in hiding away from that,” he acknowledged. “But it’s the media and supporters who are interested in the history. Maybe it adds a little extra spice for (them). “If you’re going in with the old-school approach that we owe those blokes you’re not focussing on what you need to do in the moment. “And I reckon that’s the unprofessional view to take. That’s what the ammos talk about – we’re not about that.” Fremantle famously defeated Geelong in the Cats first-ever home final at Kardinia Park last year.
Games between the two sides have featured a number of off-the-ball incidents. But Geelong’s gradual improvement in recent weeks had Scott in a good head-space this week. “We’re playing better footy than we were even three weeks ago. That (defeating North Melbourne) was close to our best performance of the year against good opposition. “We’re in the top four, we’ve lost four games and been pretty well-performed. “As a footy club in the past we’ve relished playing in the big games and long may it continue. “We’ve made some steps forward in the way we move the ball, made some steps forward in the way we defend opposition teams and there are slight tweaks from week to week depending on the opposition. “But it doesn’t guarantee anything. “The external focus will be on what happens off the ball and some pushing and shoving. “Do you know what influence it will have on the game? None, unless one of them gives away a free kick. “It will have no influence.”

Sunshine for Warriors after win over Bendigo By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors faces an unpredictable Sunshine in National Premier League on Saturday. Sunshine has forged a reputation for catching teams off guard, winning after coming back from 3-1 deficits three times this season. This weekend Sunshine will be out for atonement after a 6-0 loss to Richmond.

North Geelong will be buoyant after 2-0 win away to Bendigo last weekend. The home side started with a string of forward forays but Warriors custodian Daniel Zilic had their measure. A frustrated Bendigo resorted to grappling and wrestling tactics, raising the ire of the visitors. Vito Cichello pinpointed a cross
for Mark Paleka to head strongly for the Warriors’ first goal at the fifteenth minute. Two minutes after the interval Bendigo keeper Christopher Xerri misjudged a Nathan Long throughball, which Juso Julardzija pounced on to slot the ball past the advancing keeper. Sensing victory, the Warriors gave Xerri a work-over in the fol-
lowing minutes with a series of balls going close Bendigo came close to scoring near the end of the match when a Steve Martin shot for goal was brilliantly saved by Zilic. North Geelong coach Micky Colina was happy with the win. “It was tough and physical (but) the boys stood up and kept their composure.”
Cold comfort of trout THE icy conditions at Lake Bostock around daybreak on Saturday must have been a shock to Daniel Baker when he went fishing for the first time since moving from Queensland two years ago. Daniel and a mate baited up with worms on a running sinker rig and cast Tassie Devils from the shoreline, landing seven rainbow trout around 800g each on the bait and three browns – two of 2kg and one of 3kg – on the lure as well as a few small redfin. Brian Long had a midday session at Lake Hepburn, landing five brown trout from 900g to just over 2kg on a Bob ‘N’ Spoon. Lake Purrumbete continued producing exceptional brown trout and Chinook salmon for anglers stealthily casting lures and flies from the east bank. Trolling Tassie Devils at first light also caught fish. Next door, Lake Bullen Merri’s Chinook salmon took hard-body lures trolled deep. Steve Prior and Kenny Prior caught a chucky 1.5kg Chinook at first light on Monday using an old-faithful pink Pegron. Anglers fishing Wurdee Boluc Reservoir caught redfin to 1.5kg on Fish Arrow soft plastics cast amongst the weed beds. Anglers who covered plenty of ground had the best results. On the saltwater front, calm conditions were productive for squid. Clifton Springs and St Leonards produced the best

fish, with depths of 3m to 4m best. St Leonards also hosted excellent numbers of King George whiting just out from the boat ramp Geelong’s waterfront was busy with snapper to 45cm over the weekend. Anglers casting gulp three-inch minnows in Watermelon Pearl had great success, particularly on the change of tide. Julie Donaghy fished Limeburner’s Point boat ramp again, landing eight Australian salmon to an outstanding 2.5kg, which gave her an incredible fight. The Barwon River estuary produced good numbers of silver trevally on pippies, while bream were caught on live Bass yabbies just up from the Sheepwash. Anglers casting lures caught salmon from Surf Coast beaches. Local lakes should be worth fishing for trout this weekend, while big squid are due to turn up off Queenscliff. SPECIALIST 4X4 CENTRE
A new specialist four-wheel drive service centre by enthusiasts for enthusiasts has opened its doors in East Geelong. The Eastern Park 4x4 Service Centre fills a void in the area with its conveniently located, fully renovated, large workshop and showroom area. Market research demonstrated the need for the specialist Eastern Park 4x4 Service Centre offering sound mechanical advice. Manager Tim Hutchinson is a 4x4 enthusiast himself, so he understands the passion four-wheel drive owners bring to their pastime and their vehicles. Tim and his fellow technician Brandon Smith are both fully qualified and know four wheel drive vehicles from top to bottom. As a four wheel driver himself, Tim does a lot of trips and knows how to set up vehicle for long trips to remote locations. Tim says the service centre aims to give drivers the confidence to rely on their vehicle for big trips and towing caravans, including offering a pre-trip check. He says 80 per cent of wear and tear is underneath the vehicle, requiring an extensive hoisted inspection, plus servicing of all the extra 4x4 equipment. Eastern Park 4x4 Service Centre also service any make and model of passenger car as well. The newest addition to Geelong’s four wheel drive community is at 508 Ryrie St, East Geelong, opposite Try Boys basketball stadium, phone 5221 0252.

LOW-IMPACT collisions typical in shopping centre car parks are annoying to say the least. Add to this the fact that people rarely own up to damaging other people’s cars. It has been noticed that drivers are often scared to back-up any further due to very limited vision. These are the occasions where reverse sensors are very welcome. Bumper Master fits reversing sensors to help customers overcome fears of backing into objects or even pedestrians. Reversing sensors help prevent damage to owners’ cars as well as the vehicles of neighbours and other motorists. They can also help when backing out of tight garages and past narrow gateposts. Bumper Master can also help owners improve the appearance of bumpers when selling vehicles. Bumpers are the first part of any car to incur damage – and first impressions are important when trying to sell. All Bumper Master repairs come with a no-questions-asked warranty to give customers peace of mind. Best of all, most bumper repairs are done for less than the cost of insurance excesses. Located behind VicRoads at 3 Dowsett St, South Geelong, Bumper Master has proven experience in providing an alternative repair service to the bumper regions of any car. Owners wanting to improve the resale value of their cars should phone Bumper Master on 5221 0138.
