■ English Channel swimmer fulfils lifetime dream...
Go with the flow By CASEY NEIL SELBY man Paul Hoffman swam from England to France last week. His 14 hour and 45 minute journey across the English Channel started at sunset on 26 July but had been decades in the making. The Rhodesian-born father of two had been dreaming about the challenge since he was 14 years old. Open water swimmer Lewis Pugh assessed Mr Hoffman’s qualifying swim for a surf lifeguard position at Sunrise Beach in Cape Town, South Africa, and told him about his tilt at the channel. Mr Hoffman decided his 40th birthday would be a great time to tackle it so he contacted coach John van Wisse and trained in pools and open water across Melbourne. His support crew dragged him from the water eight hours into his first attempt at the swim in July 2012 following four hours of vomiting. “The day I swam, as it turned out, was the twoyear anniversary of the day I got pulled out,” he said. “That was a bit of mental hurdle. Starting off - nervous would be an understatement. Once I was in the water I settled quite quickly. It was good to knock it over.” He hadn’t expected to take on the swim so early but couldn’t refuse an open weather window. “I had six hours’ notice of the swim window,” he said. “The weather in the channel is pretty unpredictable. Most of the following week was blown out. I spoke to my support crew and told them I was still feeling jetlagged. “They told me to swim on Melbourne time.” Mr Hoffman set off from Dover at 7.30pm and emerged from the water in France at 9am the following day. “I swam into quite a few jellyfish so I had quite a few stings in the early part,” he said. “You just break it up into building blocks mentally. “I told myself ‘the next block is going to be sun-up’. By sun-up I was 10 hours into the swim. “I had a fantastic support crew who really took care of me. “I got quite sick about three hours into the swim. I got a feeling of deja vu.

My son stood up at school and said ‘my dad swam to England’.” The water was 17 degrees - balmy compared to the 10 degrees Mr Hoffman had been training in back home. He was only allowed to wear goggles, a cap, and speedos and wasn’t allowed to touch his support boat. Crew members threw out containers attached to a rope filled with food and drinks.
The course is 34 kilometres in a straight line but Mr Hoffman swam more than 60km. “The current is quite strong and it flows up and down the channel,” he said. “I really got dragged around quite a bit. “You’re not aware of it when you’re swimming. Because you’ve got no reference point you can’t really see.” After walking onto the shore, Mr Hoffman had to turn around and swim back to his support boat for the three-hour journey back to England. “After the swim I was quite sick on the boat, and I was quite sick that night,” he said. “I woke up about 3am, stiff as anything, and got up and swam. I couldn’t swim much at all.

My body would just not stretch out. “The day after that I swam a bit further. It was nice not to have to swim but just swim because you want to.” Swimming for fun is now his focus and he’ll support two swimmers in training to tackle the channel next year. Mr Hoffman used the swim to fundraise for StarBright - a learning exchange program supporting AIDS and HIV-affected orphans in Cape Town’s slums and shanty towns. Shot heard around the world By MELISSA MEEHAN IT WAS a day to remember, 100 years since the first Allied shot of the war and Montrose marked its link to that day. It is believed Montrose resident
Major Charles Morris ordered the first Allied shot of World War I to be fired from Point Nepean on 5 August 1914 as a German steamer attempted to escape from Australian waters. But even that was disputed at Monbulk a century after the historic event
on Tuesday, with some claiming it was a man from the navy who ordered the shot. At a service, a plaque in Major Morris’s honour was unveiled as those present remembered.
Members of the Rotary Club of Montrose and Mount Evelyn RSL were instrumental in the day. Brigadier Michael Phelps spoke of the lives lost and the meaning of war. MP Tony Smith, as well as coun-
cillors Len Cox and Maria McCarthy attended to pay their respects, as students from the Montrose Primary School Choir sang the anthem. The plaque was organised by the Rotary Club of Montrose in connection with the Centenary of Anzac.

Covered in pride FOR some, it may have been a pie in the sky idea. But roofing the walkway beside the bakery, between Kilvington Drive and the IGA carpark in Emerald has proven to be just what the area needed. Peter Segman is one of a number of shop owners who funded the walkway cover. “The buildings are about 22-years-old and there is cover over the footpath everywhere else,” he said. “So we decided that it would be a good idea to cover it.” Mr Segman said it was particularly timely given the wet weather. “Sometimes the bricks would get slippery and it was unsafe for those using the walkway to get through to the shops,” he said.
Briefly Hydroponic house fire POLICE are investigating the cause of a house fire in Ferny Creek over the weekend. It is believed that hydroponics were involved. The house in Breem Avenue was ablaze when fire crews arrived, and while it is not yet listed as suspicious fire investigators were still on the scene on Monday.

“It’s a busy thoroughfare.” “It’s been very well received.” The project took six months to get up and running, but was years in the making. Mr Segman said that the laneway would be officially opened and renamed later this year. “These shops were once a blacksmith’s shop owned by Charles Stapledon and it was sold in 1945,” he said. “So we’re hoping to name it after something to do with his name or shop.” Organisers have even found a descendant, a great granddaughhter of Mr Stapledon who has agreed to attend the opening. As the Mail visited the laneway on Tuesday, passers-by spoke of their delight that the walkway was now covered.

“The old lights were such that it was becoming impossible to train and when you can’t train, you can’t be competitive,” she said. “The (new) lights are also of a standard that we could run some twilight football games so that’s something different for the community who will be able to do events like that.”
Frontier in fight against fast food By ANEEKA SIMONIS A GROUP dedicated to creating sustainable food culture in the hills has built its first wicking vegie box. Located at Tecoma Uniting Church, the Hills Food Frontier (THFF) built the community garden on Saturday 9 August at as part of a project called Food, Life, Art, Music and Education (FLAME) which hopes to create growth, wellbeing and connectedness in the community. Promoting the area’s capacity to grow and provide healthy food to the community, THFF has began collaborating on sustainable food projects with local farmers, producers, cafes and restaurants.
On its Facebook page the group said its “food frontier” is a stance against fast food corporations making their way into the hills. IT WAS an illuminating night for the Olinda-Ferny Creek Football Netball Club last week when $50,000 lights above the Olinda Reserve football oval were officially opened. The lights, which ring around the oval, shone through the dense
fog and rain that rolled over the hills on Thursday 31 July as representatives from the club joined La Trobe MP Jason Wood for the opening. Mr Wood, who had played for the club in his youth, provided $50,000 in funding for the lights as an election pledge last year. He said that the lights that were

Get the most Body
If you aren’t going to use these benefits, then switch to a fund where you are not paying for these extras that you will never claim for...

ARE you getting the most out of your private health insurance? It’s something we often get asked about. ‘Should I get extras cover for physio? How much will I be covered for? Who is the best fund to go with? What are the waiting periods? What are my out of pocket expenses going to be?’ Whilst we can’t, and won’t, recommend any particular funds, there are tools available to help you determine which fund is the best fit for you. 1. Start to by comparing policies. Go to the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman comparison site www. privatehealth.gov.au/dynamic/compare, enter your requirements to receive a list of funds that cover your needs. Tip: Make sure you tick if you are eligible for restricted funds. Industry only funds (like teachers, health, defence, health etc) are often the best performing ones for their members. 2. Do you need ancillary cover? If you just having dental check-ups and rarely go to the physio, osteo or chiro, then don’t bother. Do the maths yourself but it is likely you will be paying far more in premiums than you will ever receive in benefits. Tip: Look at what benefits are
gained by higher ancillary cover compared to basics. For example, are you paying an extra $30 per month just so you can claim your custom orthotics once every few years? 3. Once you’ve narrowed down a couple of funds, you can review their performance at www.privatehealth. gov.au/dynamic/healthfundlist. The industry average for ‘benefits as a percentage of contributions’ in 2013 was 86.9 per cent. If your fund is higher than this, then you are doing well. Tip: the funds with the highest market share are often the worst performing in this area. 4. So now you’ve narrowed it down to a few funds, check out their websites and ask the following questions: what is the waiting period for different types of treatment? what, if any, are the benefit limitation periods? This means that there may be a waiting period on gaining full benefits for some services. do you have accrued benefits, credits or equity in your previous fund that can be transferred to a new fund? Tip: don’t be afraid to haggle! If you have a clear choice between two
· · ·
funds then make sure you tell them this, and ask whether they may be able to waive your waiting period, reduce your excess or some other type of incentive to get your membership. 5. Get the most out of your cover. Are you eligible for regular dental check-ups? Are you eligible for group classes, hydrotherapy and maintenance physical therapies? Did you know that most ancillary insurance now covers remedial massage? What about that some funds will even give you money back on your runners, back and wrist braces and gym memberships? You’re already paying for many of these benefits. Tip: Find out from your fund and get what you are paying for. If you aren’t going to use these benefits, then switch to a fund where you are not paying for these extras that you will never claim for. So go forth and do what many of the private health insurers don’t want you to do - find out what you are paying for, get a better deal if you can, use your benefits to live a healthier life or switch to a fund that better suits your needs.

100% of your fire levy goes to our fire services Last year, the Victorian Government replaced the Fire Services Levy with a fairer system, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission. Now every property owner contributes a fair share to Victoria’s fire services, not just those with adequate insurance. Eligible pensioners and veterans also receive a $50 concession. 100 per cent of the fire levy goes to support greater funding of the operations of the Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade. This includes firefighters, staff and volunteers, training, community education, protective clothing, vital lifesaving equipment and more than 1,200 fire stations and 2,300 trucks. Each year, Victoria’s firefighters attend more than 78,000 incidents, including road accidents and rescues, bush and grass fires, fires in the home, and workplace incidents. It’s a fairer fire levy.

again,” he said. “So emergency services came together, service groups too and it’s just grown from there, now we have police, ambulance, schools and the community house.” “It means we as a town have a plan for the worst.” Mr Collins said Mr O’Reilly worked with the community to ensure everyone was on the same page. “He’s really championing us as a pilot program that can be rolled out to other towns,” he said. The Community Risk Assessment workshop for Gembrook will be held tonight (Tuesday 12 August) at 7.30pm at the Gembrook Community complex.

EMERALD’S Emergency Support Team (EST) is leading a pilot program in Gembrook that would provide a unique smallscale resilience program in case of a bushfire or natural disaster. Meeting tonight (Tuesday), the Community Assessment workshop will be held in Gembrook from 7.30 at the Community Complex. Cardinia Shire manager Community, Risk and Emergency Management Myles O’Reilly said safety for the community after a disaster was the shared responsibility between State-based organisations and agencies, municipal councils and most importantly the at-risk community themselves.
But residents must not remain complacent, as the group is ready for the aftermath of an emergency - not protecting the town from fire, flood, wind or any other disaster. “Dealing effectively with an emergency in an ‘all agencies, all hazards’ philosophy requires everyone to work together,” he said. “The EST model provides a vehicle for community involvement, where the community can lead its own recovery process.” Emerald EST chairman Wayne Collins said recovery was usually the responsibility of the council, and the EST was set up after Ash Wednesday. “We looked at the response of the town and how we would deal with it if it were to happen
number of years, and I had a few cool nights when I slept out in the middle of October and thought I could do it,” he said. “I really wanted to link it to Homelessness Week and that’s right in the middle of August.” At the end of the week, Mr Heenan can go home, have a warm shower and knows he’ll have a roof over his head. “When I go, I leave it to Neal and Debbie at the team at Holy Fools,” he said. “Their organisation is just wonderful for these people, and they need some help, every dollar and cent helps.”
Led by Cardinia Shire’s manager of Community, Risk and Emergency Management, Myles O’Reilly, centre, says there is a plan in place if the worst were to happen.

TEMPERATURES below minus three degrees, with only the clothes on his back and a cardboard box to keep him warm. Mount Evelyn resident and former mayor Tim Heenan wanted to raise awareness for homelessness last week, but even he didn’t realise it would be so hard. “On the first Saturday and Sunday I didn’t sleep a wink,” Mr Heenan said. “I came in thinking it would be cold, but I didn’t expect it to be -3.7 degrees.” While temperatures below zero would be tough for any-
one, it’s the harsh reality many face every night. “I’ve been really lucky to have people delivering wood for the fires, and been able to chat to some of the guys who sleep here on a more permanent basis and get them a swag to sleep in too,” he said. “But when you think about the 44,000 people sleeping it rough every night in Australia, my complaints mean nothing.” When asked why he would choose to sleep out right in the middle of a cold Melbourne winter - Mr Heenan blamed it on bravado. “I’ve been doing it for a

Royal demise on stage BELGRAVE students are preparing to wow audiences as they take on Broadway classic, “Exit the King” later this month. Mater Christi College senior students have spent the last few months fine tuning their theatrical and stagecraft skills for the performance, due to screen 29 - 30 August at Burrinja Cultural Centre. The production is an absurdist comedy portraying the decline and death of King Berengar I, his court and kingdom after it had been conquered in 961. Audiences can expect a high grade show, assisted with the use of innovative projections and a musical soundtrack. Mater Christi College principal Mary Fitz-Gerald said the
experience had helped students work together and pull off an entertaining re-enactment of the Italian King’s demise. “The school production is a wonderful learning opportunity for our students as it not only provides an avenue for artistic expression, it also teaches the values of teamwork, perseverance and hard work to achieve a common goal,” she said. First hitting Broadway in 1968, critics praised the playwright Eugene Ionesco’s script, with one New York Times writer naming it Ionesco’s “incomparably greatest work.” The performance will be held on Friday 29 August at 7.30pm and 30 Saturday August at 2pm and 7.30pm. For tickets, visit www.burrinja. org.au or call 9754 8723.

Luncheon movies are the ticket By MELISSA MEEHAN MAIL readers are given the chance to win two double passes to Croydon Cinemas Movie Luncheons. Director and general manager of the Croydon Cinema’s four screen complex, George Aleksiunas said the lunches had been popular in the past and following requests from customers decided to bring them back. The screenings are held every second
Wednesday, excluding school and public holidays. “It’s been really well received, we have already sold out for this week,” Mr Aleksiunas said. “That’s the difference between us and a big cinema - we’re able to listen to our customers.” He said the luncheons kept on theme with providing a cheap entertainment option for locals in the area. “We have two options, tea coffee and lunch for $15 including the movie ticket
and champagne and lunch for $20,” he said. “To have lunch and a movie ticket for that price - it’s something we are proud of.” Reservations are essential and close by 3pm the day before the luncheon. To win, go to the Mail Newspaper Group Facebook page, and find the related post. Share, like and comment on the post with the codeword YUM. Winners will be announced on Friday 15 August at 3pm.

Funding blow to Pritchard By MELISSA MEEHAN
A LACK of funding could see Tecoma’s Daniel Pritchard forced to withdraw from the Blind Cricket World Cup. The 19-year-old received news of his selection Sunday night but found that past sponsors had withdrawn interest in supporting the competition. “The approximate cost of the tour is $3000 and if I can’t find the funds, I’ll have no choice but to pull out of the tournament,” Daniel said. Blind Cricket Australia is not supported by any mainstream cricketing body. Players must self-fund in order to attend international competitions. “It puts a real burden on training if you’re not even sure you can get on the plane,” Daniel said. The diploma of arts student is looking at alternative ways to raise funds but is having little luck. “Many organisations aren’t interested in giving the disabled a chance,” he said.
Community theft
“I’d be happy to work for my keep. Speaking engagements, demonstrations, that sort of thing.” This will be Daniel’s third tour with the Australian Blind Cricket Team after attending the Blind Ashes and SBI T20 Cricket World Cup for the Blind in 2012. He sat out of a competition to India and Sri Lanka earlier this year due to eye complications. The 2014 40/40 Blind Cricket World Cup will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, over 22 November to 9 December. Players are attending from countries include Bangladesh, England, India, Nepal, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Australia. Blind Cricket follows most standard conventions of mainstream cricket. All players on each side must have less than 10 per cent of normal vision. Bowling is delivered underarm and the ball is made of plastic and contains ball bearings.
Daniel Pritchard hopes to go to the World Cup. 125154
A DEMOCRATIC advocacy group is coming to Selby to help encourage community involvement in local and federal politics. Voices of Indi (VOI) will hold a free public forum at Selby Community House on Tuesday 19 August to explain how people can voice their opinion about decisions affecting them in their electorate. VOI vice president Denis Ginnivan said the group is not looking to influence policy but give communities the tools and strategies they need to have their concerns heard at a local and federal level. “What is sometimes missing is a voice from average people in the community. “The presentation will explain how regional communities can do something as opposed to doing nothing. “Instead of feeling angry, people should engage at a community level,” he said. VOI formed during the last federal election when it instigated a grass roots community campaign which successfully removed Sophie Mirabella from the safe Liberal seat of Indi. Ms Mirabella held the seat for almost 12
years but lost it to independent candidate Cathy McGowan with an historic swing of more than 9 per cent. Since taking the seat Ms McGowan has been well received by her electorate on one occasion taking to the streets about the 2014 budget update earlier this year. Forum organiser Karl Williams said VOI was formed out of concern that some MPs put political interests above those of their electorates. “Nowadays, many feel that our elected representative puts too high a priority on their own position and career within their political party and is less inclined to represent the community’s voice. “This is what propelled the Voices for Indi movement which is now spreading its reach to empower dedicated independent candidates to challenge the political mainstream throughout Australia.” Since the group formed, VOI has been in high demand around the country and members have been invited to speak at more than 20 electorates across Australia. VOI speakers Denis Ginnivan and Tony Lane will speak at the Selby Community House from 7pm on 19 August.
ONE just has a sense of anger and frustration over the future of the Swinburne University site. The site was compulsorily acquired for the local community. It was a gift because of the overwhelming educational need and so strongly supported by local government, all politicians, schools and a wide range of community interests. Swinburne was asked on behalf of the community to provide programs and in doing so gained university status. Then without a whimper from our local politicians, legislation was enacted freeing Swinburne from its outer east commitment. The community has been betrayed, this is community theft. The university will argue it has offered the site for sale to education providers. With no taker they are on track for a commercial sale. So potentially we will see a transfer of resources from the outer east to Hawthorn. Social justice demands that this site given to the community remains a community asset. Dr Peter Harris, Past Chair Outer Eastern Planning Council, Darwin.

THANK you John Nieman (Shotgun Solution, Mail, 5 August), it’s always good to hear from someone who has done his research and understands the danger of high powered rifles being discharged next to residential houses. Someone was recently charged with murder in the USA for discharging a high powered rifle into a large and wide river when the bullet skimmed off the water and killed someone standing on the other bank. Bullets can ricochet off rocks and trees and end up anywhere. Mr Bray from Parks Victoria has a legal duty of care to protect the public and if a death occurs through misadventure then the person’s relatives may want him charged with manslaughter. Maybe he should get some legal advice quickly and let the public know where it stands. There are people out there willing to shoot deer
with a crossbow, why has this solution not been tested. As the saying goes, the first causality in a bureaucracy is logic and, yes John, centrefire rifles should be banned within 60 kms of Melbourne’s CBD. Bruce Johnson, Monbulk.
Picasso cow paints a lie I’VE no doubt the children at Belgrave South Primary School had a lot of fun decorating Bessy (Big Bessy the Cow Shows How, Mail, 29 July) but the dairy industry’s Picasso Cow competition is nothing but a clever ruse by this multi-billion dollar industry to indoctrinate school children and thus increase its profits. On the Picasso website students are warned that most children are “underconsuming dairy foods” which “has the potential to impact on their intake of essential nutrients needed for growth and development”. What lies! The only ones who need to consume dairy are baby cows. Like all mothers’ milk, cows breast milk is produced solely for the nourishment of her new born baby. As for the oft repeated propaganda that consuming dairy is needed for strong bones, the truth is that the countries with the highest intake of dairy have the highest incidence of bone fractures. On the Picasso website children are told that “milk is created in the udders of dairy cows” but they are not told that the milk is created specifically to feed the cow’s new born baby who has been sent to the slaughterhouse along with 700,000 other newborn dairy calves. Don’t fall for the dairy hoax. The dairy industry is a cruel and ruthless industry that mercilessly exploits mothers and babies for nothing but profit. I urge all dairy consumers to view dairy from the perspective of a mother cow by watching “Milk comes from a grieving mother” h t t p : / / w w w. y o u t u b e . com/watch?v=_kM387cI4rk Jenny Moxham, Monbulk.

Terror of Tigers By RUSSELL BENNETT A 14-GOAL first half gave Upwey Tecoma an insurmountable advantage at the main break over Emerald in YVMDFL Division 1 action on Saturday - storming to a 65-point win, 21.15 (141) to 12.4 (76). The hometown Tigers booted six goals-to-one in the first quarter but had 13 scoring shots-to-two, outlining their dominance. The second term continued in a similar vein, but after the break the Bombers clicked into gear, booting six majors of their own in one of their best quarters for the year and adding some respectability to the scoreboard. Upwey was too strong all over the ground for the most part though, creating 20 more scoring shots. Alex Hellriegel booted four majors up forward for the visitors in his best output for the season, while Justin Davis and player-coach Josh Taylor added two apiece. Trent Wilson made his senior Bombers debut and
Emerald’s Dylan Bova prepares to scoop up the Sherrin, closely contested by his Upwey Tecoma opponent, Blair Sheppard. Picture: COURTESY OF ROBYN KUYS played a starring role, while Luke McKenna was again at his reliable best. Ed Pascoe, Nathan Bownds and Michael Dompietro also stood up to be counted for the visitors; while Chad Davis, Sam Gooley and Dan-
iel Waters (four goals) were superb for the Tigers, who had 12 separate goal-kickers. Dylan Sloane, brother of Adelaide superstar Rory, slotted three.
Three games and percentage behind Belgrave in last on the Division 1 ladder, the Bombers will be back in the second tier next season. But with a new playing surface and new facilities on the way, it likely won’t be long before they return to the top flight of the YVMDFL. In Division 2 action on Saturday, Gembrook Cockatoo player-coach Leigh McCombe continued his outstanding goal-kicking run with 11 of his side’s 12 majors in a 20-point win over Yarra Junction, 12.7 (79) to 9.5 (59). McCombe has now kicked 24 goals in the past two weeks and is second only to Seville star Nathan O’Keefe in the league’s goalkicking. Brad Porter, Chris Vernal and Luke Tyrrell also shone as the Brookers rung in their 10-year 2004 premiership reunion in style. For the Eagles, meanwhile, Todd Cordwell, Lachlan Cove and Daniel Amrein stood strong while David Lever and Matt Jones slotted two goals apiece.
Trophy pride held aloft
Downed by ’Rays By JARROD POTTER THE sun has set on Sherbrooke’s stellar season after a 72-86 defeat at the hands of Corio Bay in its Big V basketball semi-final. Sherbrooke was unable to best the reigning Big V State Championship Men premiers Corio Bay Stingrays as the Geelong-based team knocked off the Suns by 14 points on Sunday. The best efforts of Sherbrooke import pair Grant Johnson (26 points, seven rebounds) and Titus Robinson (20 points, 14 rebounds) could not drag the Suns to victory as the Stingrays unleashed in the second quarter. A 27-10 disparity in the second term left Sherbrooke chasing for the rest of the match as Ma’Alo Hicks (28 points, 10 rebounds) and Duane Johnson (17 points, 12 rebounds) dominated in close for the Stingrays at both ends. Sherbrooke will host its Gala Presentation Night on Saturday 30 August at Switch Bar in Knox. For more information on the presentation night, contact the club on lakesidemaintanence@bigpond.com.
THE annual Cockatoo Hills Challenge was held on Saturday at a soggy Mountain Road Reserve, Cockatoo. The event, held by Cockatoo Little Athletics Club, is one of the must-run events on the Yarra Ranges Athletics calendar. Events ranging from 500m to 3000m over a testing, undulating course suited the multi-talented Yarra Ranges athletes. A great turnout of club members, young and old, ensured the return of the perpetual trophy to the Yarra Ranges Athletics trophy cabinet. Parents and their kids alike, all get a sleep in next weekend with no cross country events. Their Athletics Victoria registered athletes will be competing at the 5km or 15km road race in Ballarat.
Monbulk juniors - winners Monbulk Junior Football Club Round 14 A WET and cold Melbourne winter’s day greeted the five teams representing Monbulk this week. The U11s had a bye and could stay at home while the other sides flew the Monbulk Junior footy flag. The U9s opened proceedings at Olinda against Mount Evelyn. Through rain and hail, the youngsters battled on a muddy ground against a determined opposition and again showed great form to encourage those who braved the conditions. Monbulk U10s faced up next against Olinda Ferny Creek in what they thought may have been an opportunity to play football and have a snowball fight, but conditions held and the kids got a chance to display their improved form and attitude. The U12s were welcomed during their warm-up against Olinda Ferny Creek with rain and hail and then the game began with some sunshine appearing. The game was a tight contest with the boys holding firm for another win. They continue to march towards the finals. Heartbreak for the second week in a row for the U14s with a nail-biting contest going against Monbulk. Belgrave Olinda was just a little stronger on the day. Monbulk U16s journeyed to Wesburn and put on a great performance to come home with an impressive win. The two pillars Lachlan Hancock-Wolfe in defence and Ben Watson (six goals) up forward led the way. Final home-andaway game at Monbulk next week. U9S VS MOUNT EVELYN (NO SCORE KEPT) Awards T. Gap narrows for the top YVMDFNL TWO rounds to go in Division 1 of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Community Bank Football Netball League and the top five is still wide open with six clubs jostling for a position in the final five. Mount Evelyn takes on Olinda next week in what could be a season ending game for both clubs. Upwey takes on ladder leaders Monbulk to keep its season alive. The Division 2 last round sees Thornton sitting fifth, one game ahead of Alexandra and Gembrook. Alexandra has the bye so it finishes sixth. Gembrook takes on Thornton but need a massive win to boost their percentage to take fifth spot. Netball in Division 1 sees Mount Evelyn and Olinda on the same point sitting, 4 and 5. A win is a must for both to hold down their spot in the five. Division 2 looks like the final five is set. It would take a massive win by Powelltown over Kinglake to boost their percentage and Seville to beat Yarra Junction. Division 1 Seniors Mount Evelyn 15.12 (102) d Belgrave 10.11 (71) MOUNT Evelyn’s finals chances are still alive after a good 31 point win over Belgrave. The Mounters controlled this game for most of the day and got out to a 22-point lead at half-time on the back of some hard fast running play. Belgrave dug deep in the third quarter and got right back into the game and by the last change it only trailed by 13 points and this game was up for grabs. Mount Evelyn defended brilliantly in the last term holding Belgrave to one point while they slotted three majors to win in pretty good fashion come the final siren. Best Mount Evelyn: M. Martin (2), S. Martin (4), J. Gardam (1). Belgrave: R. McKendry, C. Kelf, J. Pearce. Wandin 16.11 (107) d Healesville 10.9 (69) WANDIN’S good form has continued after a handy 38 point win over Healesville. The first quarter was reasonably even with Wandin leading by just seven points but Wandin took control in the second term booting seven goals to two to go into half-time 39 points ahead. Even though the second half was an even contest and Healesville certainly held its own against the league leaders it never looked to be any real threat as Wandin had all the answers.
Mitch Collins takes a strong mark.
Top; Matthew Hall and Richard Cowan wrestle for the ball. Left: Belgrave’s new scoreboard. Best Wandin: J. Myers, J. Ladner (1), S. McDonnell. Healesville: N. Mende, A. Davies (1), T. Costigan. Monbulk 9.9 (63) d Olinda Ferny Creek 8.14 (62) MONBULK now sits one game clear in second spot after a thrilling one point victory over Olinda. This game was a beauty throughout. There was just no separating these teams as they went goal for goal, Monbulk’s lead was just three points at the first change with Olinda grabbing the lead at half-time by just one point and by three quarter time that lead remained the same. The last quarter was a great battle with goals hard to come by, Olinda seemed to have its chances but couldn’t convert whereas Monbulk may have only booted two majors but it was enough to secure it a one point win and secure second spot with finals fast approaching. Best Monbulk: B. Emmett (1), B. Hicken, S. Williams (2). Olinda Ferny Creek: G. Stevens, C. Brown, N. Broomhall. Under 18 Monbulk 10.11 (71) d Yea 6.3 (39) MONBULK set its win up with a great first quarter in which it booted five goals and, more impressively, held Yea scoreless. The rest of the game was a tight battle but every time Yea did look like it was about to challenge Monbulk would answer to quell any real comeback and eventually win by an impressive 32 points. Best
Monbulk: M. Hollow, N. Cramer, P. Barge. Yea: R. Aldous (1), H. Stares, C. Stimson. Mount Evelyn 18.7 (115) d Belgrave 7.7 (49) MOUNT Evelyn shot out of the blocks and had this game in its keeping at quarter time as it raced to a 44-point lead on the back of an eight-goal term. Belgrave was a lot more competitive after quarter time but Mount Evelyn always had the edge and come final siren it had stretched its lead out to 66 points with a very dominant performance. Best Mount Evelyn: J. Craig, C. Argentino, J. Bombinski (2). Belgrave: C. Rak (1), T. Somervaille (1), J. Bartils (1). Warburton Millgrove 9.8 (62) d Woori Yallock 8.8 (56) WARBY did lead this game all day but was given one big fright from Woori. Warby’s lead was 20 points at the first break and it looked in control but Woori slowly moved closer and by half-time the margin was just 10 points. The third term was as even as it could be with both teams scoring 2.2 to keep the margin at 10 points and the game in the balance. The last quarter saw Woori get more chances but unable to convert as they booted 3.4 while Warby scored three goals straight which was enough to hold on to win by one straight kick. Best Warburton Millgrove: D. MonAphai, J. McIntosh (3), J. Juzwin. Woori Yallock: A. Wells (2), B. Arnold (3), J. Dewhurst (1). Wandin 27.16 (178) d Powelltown
2.3 (15) WANDIN had this game played on its terms from the outset. It booted seven goals to one to set up its day and didn’t look back from there. It booted six majors in the second and third term and then saved its best for last finishing the day with eight last quarter goals to win by 163 points in very easy fashion. Best Wandin: J. Iedema (7), P. Hodgett (3), T. Leech-Hines (2). Powelltown: M. Mallick (1), A. McDowell, S. Sutherland. Seville forfeited to Olinda Ferny Creek. Division 1 A Grade Netball Warburton Millgrove 51 drew with Woori Yallock 51 THIS was a great game between two teams that won’t feature in finals but are looking to finish their season off strong. Woori lead at all the changes but Warby was always within striking distance and going into the last quarter Woori’s lead was just three goals. The last quarter was a ripper and Warby did look like they were going to pinch the win but come the final bell scores were all tied up in what was a fitting result to a classic contest. Best Warburton Millgrove: StephanieEllen Durant (19), Alexandra Bryan, Karly Wappett. Woori Yallock: Peri Stewart (39), Emma Hales, Jordan Kennedy (12). Belgrave 57 d Mount Evelyn 53 THIS was a fantastic contest that Belgrave had to come from behind to win with Mount Evelyn doing everything right but take the points.
Mount Evelyn started the better and by half-time its lead was seven goals. Belgrave started to control the tempo in the third quarter and came right back into the contest and trailed by just one goal going in the last term. Belgrave players showed great professionalism in the last as they scored 17 goals to 12 to come over the top and win by four goals in what was a great prelude to what should be a fantastic finals series. Best Belgrave: Tara Jois, Angela Jeffrey, Carmen Timms (17). Mount Evelyn: Rachael Hickey (38), Jessica Walker, Bridgette BarryMurphy. Wandin 47 d Healesville 29 WANDIN won this game reasonably comfortably in the end but not before a really competitive first half where Healesville took it right up to one of the form teams of the competition. Wandin’s lead was just four goals at half-time and it had a battle on its hands. Wandin really started to get on top in the second half as it stretched its lead out to nine goals at the last change and then finished the day off well with a 12 goal to three last quarter to win well but certainly had to work hard for it. Best Wandin: Tayissa Coppinger, Kathleen McMahon, Melissa Martinov (28). Healesville: Chelsea Connell, Caitlyn Jeffress, Michelle Sanders. Upwey Tecoma 63 d Emerald 23 THIS game was top of the ladder (Upwey) v bottom of the ladder (Emerald) and the result certainly reflected that. Upwey dominated from start to finish and even though Emerald did try its hardest Upwey’s form was just far superior because it didn’t have a weakness all over the court and gained yet another victory. Best Upwey Tecoma: Melanie Walter, Gretta Hankinson, Megan Kennerley (34). Emerald: Rochelle Appleby, Megan Whiteroad, Lana Whyte. Olinda Ferny Creek 60 d Monbulk Hawks 28 OLINDA produced a consistent four quarters of quality play to come away with a convincing win. Olinda’s lead was 12 goals at halftime and after that it really did take control as it added 33 second half goals to 13 in a one sided contest to win by a comfortable 32 goals. Best Olinda: Georgia Martin, Ashlee Howard (38), Alice Padget. Monbulk Hawks: Allanah Barwick, Claire Weickhardt, Sophie Byatt (14).
