Track winds back BROTHERS Russell and Stephen Burns are preparing for a blast from the past when the Variety Dick Smith B to B Bash makes a special pitstop at the historic Bonegilla Migrant Camp, just outside Albury, on Friday. Their mother Stelia and their nonna Guseppina Scarpin were housed at Bonegilla when they first settled in Australia after fleeing Italy when the communist regime moved into their tiny island town of Lussin Poccolo. It will be the first time any member of the family has visited the facility since their mother’s arrival on 25 October 1950 and the brothers expect it to be an emotional experience. They grew up hearing stories about the facility that their nonna and one-year-old mother called home after they made the hasty decision to leave Italy. Russell’s dad Ron is also doing the 4929 kilometre charity bash, in a separate vehicle. Russell says there won’t be a dry eye among the three family members when they stand in front of the memorial plaque inscribed with their ancestors’ names and arrival date. “It is going to be emotional, but like the families that Variety supports, mine is stoic and resilient,” he said. “We have overcome adversity just as many Aussie kids and their families have done, with a little help from Variety.” Russell recalls his nonna’s stories about the tough camp conditions and how it was run with strict military precision. “I remember Nonna reminiscing about her time at Bonegilla and how hard it was to look after my mum there, especially as her husband was sent to work in Sydney,” he said. “The food was scarce and she

would often go hungry to make sure mum had enough food to eat. I remember her telling me how she and the other migrants scavenged for native roots and herbs to supplement their meagre rations.” The Bonegilla visit is one of many pitstops during the 10-day adventure through 17 regional and remote towns across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. The outrageously themed vintage vehicles – which include an F-100 M*A*S*H ambulance with novelty helicopter pad, a Hogwart’s Express vintage Holden and Ford Falcon Thunderbirds car – will finish on Sunday by crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The colourful crew is expected to lob at Bonegilla around 4.30pm on Friday.

Red Cross turns 100 and still going strong A CENTURY ago Australia was at war and across the country those left at home were mobilising to help. Beechworth, along with many towns across the country, heeded the call, forming a branch of the Australian Red Cross. To commemorate the Centenary of Australian Red Cross and its own 100th birthday, the Beechworth Red Cross Branch will plant “Red Cross roses” and lay a plaque at the Town Hall Gardens on Monday, 18 August at 2.30pm. Beechworth Branch Chair Julia Smith said it wasn’t always called the Red Cross, though. “The branch originally started as the Beechworth Women’s Patriotic League just days after World War I broke out, and the league organised comfort packages to be sent to our soldiers at the front in Europe,” she said. “The league was officially registered as a branch of Australian Red Cross in March the following year.” Indigo Shire Council has prepared a plot for the planting of these Red Cross roses, which have been launched this year especially for the centenary. The Australian Red Cross officially celebrates its centenary today, 13 August, having been formed at Government House, Melbourne in 1914 exactly nine days after the outbreak of World War I. Three members of the Beechworth branch are attending the reception today at Government House, Melbourne, where Mrs Elizabeth Chernov, wife of the Governor of Victoria is hosting a reception to celebrate this significant occasion. Mrs Chernov will present certificates to Victorian branches, including the Beechworth branch, which are also celebrating their own individual centenaries. And for the first time, the Red

Cross Connects event for the zone nine region of Victoria will be held in Beechworth on Wednesday, 24 September. “This is a forum for all Red Cross people - staff, members and volunteers

from this region, as well as local business partners and community members to meet,” Julia Smith said. “It is an opportunity for all to be updated and share information about the work that Red Cross does to assist

those most vulnerable in our society locally, within Australia and overseas. “There will be a variety of guest speakers, as well as a keynote speaker drawn from our national or international programs.

“We hope as many people as possible can attend the forum, which will be held at the Beechworth Memorial Hall. We are grateful to Indigo Shire Council for the assistance in the way of a grant towards the running of this event.”

Albury in bid for bikes ALBURY City is one of seven inland NSW cit ies to jointly release an expression of interest to secure a naming rights sponsor for the inaugural 2015 Evocity Mountain Bike (MTB) Series. AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack said the Evoc ity MTB Series would take place in 2015 and could be the most lucrative MTB contest in Australia. The series will secure a major mountain bike race held in each of the seven Evocities of Albury, Armidale, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange, Tamworth and Wagga Wagga. Naming right expressions of interest for the series were officially called for this week when the mayors of each city met at Parliament House in Sydney. “As an Evocity, Albury is excited to help make this concept a reality and provide a platform to promote the opportunities and lifestyle available in regional NSW to a national audience,” Mayor Mack said. “The Evocity MTB Series seeks to establish a high performance pathway for mountain bike rac ing in regional NSW. It will increase participation in the sport, raise the standard of mountain bike racing in regional NSW and raise the profile of each of the cities represented.” “Mountain biking is a fast-growing and popu lar recreation trend that could potentially create national exposure for the Evocity brand by align ing with a naming rights sponsor through a cor porate partnership.” “With the support of a naming rights sponsor, this event has the potential to be the most lucra tive MTB Series in Australia. The prize money will stimulate interest among elite riders and cre ate extensive media coverage,” he said. All seven Evocities will have tailored tracks to ensure there is variance between the races and to cater for competitive, amateur and recreational mountain bikers of all abilities. Albury’s event is scheduled to take place on 27 June 2015. “By offering a significant prize pool and creating a mountain biking event of national sig nificance we can attract biking enthusiasts from around Australia to visit each of the Evocities, Andrew Jezewski was among more than 40 riders to take on the new “Flame Trees Trail” participate in the series and generate an econom - at Beechworth in the latest round of this year’s RAMBO Mt Bike Series. THE Panthers’ carpark will be pressed into use for the Ovens and Murray League Grand Final if Lavington Sports Ground is needed for the match, following an agreement final ised late last week. AlburyCity Council finalised the agreement with the Panthers Group that will guar antee the availability of its carpark. The agreement between council and the Panthers Group will ensure the carpark is available for fans if the Lavington Sports Ground is chosen to host the big game. As in the past, carparking will be free, there will be provision for disabled parking and council will continue to provide traffic management around the site. AlburyCity Director Community and Recreation James Jenkins acknowledged the Panthers Group for once again supporting the Panthers Football Netball Club bid for the O&M Grand Final in partnership with AlburyCity. “We’ve been working closely with club officials this week to reach an outcome. It’s a great result and we’re incredibly grateful to the Panthers for allowing the ongoing use of their carpark for one of the biggest events on the sporting calendar,” he said. “This has been a really difficult week for the club and for officials to once again en sure their facilities will be available for local football and netball fans is yet another example of their willingness to support our community and grassroots sport.” “The Panthers has helped council deliver a number of major events over the years, including O&M Grand Finals and matches across elite codes such as AFL, NRL and A-League. It’s been a great relationship and we’re looking forward to that continuing in the future.”

Firies bleed by example ON FRIDAY in Albury, Southern Border Rural Fire Service members rolled up their sleeves and got in and helped - but not for something you’d normally see them volunteering at. Emergency services workers and volunteers across Australia are competing to see who can give the most blood during a national challenge that wraps up this month. And on Friday the Southern Border Rural Fire Service members joined in and now they are calling for more donations as the challenge wraps up this week. Police, firefighters, paramedics and emergency response workers and volunteers have until 15 August to roll up their sleeves and make their donation count. Rural Fire Service Southern Border Team spokesperson Patrick Westwood said the challenge was healthy competition and an easy way to do something positive for the community. “Emergency services are often faced with devastating scenes and donating blood provides us with another way of helping save lives in an emergency situation,” “In our line of work we see firsthand how important donated blood is to people in need. “That’s why it is important for us to bleed by example and encourage community members to follow our lead.” Across the state the Rural Fire Service has made 185 donations helping save the lives of more than 550 Australians in need; they are placed second behind the NSW Police Force. When asked if he was happy to be coming second to the NSW Police Force, Patrick said he was looking to move up the ranks. “With 70,000 volunteers state-

Chapman said it was not too late to get involved in the challenge. “The competition is very close and while police are currently in the lead, it’s not too late to get involved,” “The winter months have impacted

Weekend of Kelly fever AN AUCTION and bush dance at the annual Ned Kelly Weekend in Beechworth has raised more than $1600 towards next year’s Kelly weekend. Beechworth Historical Re-enactment Group secretary Laura Murray said the event had attracted more than 150 people to the Beechworth Memorial Hall last week and the money raised would help run next year’s event. “It was a great effort,” she said in what turned out to be a big weekend for the town and the group. The Ned Kelly Weekend, now in its 11th year, is run by the re-enactment group. “It coincides with Ned’s trial dates from 1880,” she said. “The re-enactment group aims to keep history and the story of Ned Kelly alive.”

experience and quality brought to the plate IT’S safe to say Neale Kohne is a ‘yes man’ – the type of guy who snatches opportunity with both hands, relishes in new experiences and flourishes within his passion. To date, Neale’s professional life is the kind most people only dream of. He’s chefed in Guatemala, Panama, Cook Islands, Fiji and the Carribean for reality TV show Survivor, done a stint in the icy wonderland of Falls Creek and even worked for the Sydney Olympic Games. “I like doing new things,” he said. “I’ve never been scared of saying yes. I’ve always been told the things you don’t say yes to will never come up again.” Perhaps the most valuable element of Neale’s journey was finding his passion and making it his profession – another far away dream of many. “I had a bit of a plan when I qualified – to work at the Olympics, work at the snow, go overseas and own your own business. It’s all panned out really well so far,” he said. Currently, Neale is manager of Cafe Borellas along with Peards Complex owners George and Deb Benyon. “A couple of weeks before I started I asked the guys how busy it was,” Neale said. “For Sunday breakfast they used to say 70 people was flat out. A busy Sunday breakfast now is 250, then you do 250 for lunch, so it’s probably five times the size it was. “It’s been an achievement for me within myself, knowing I was able to create a successful business. And it wasn’t just me. It’s been a lot of hard work but a lot of good times with George and Deb.

To grow the business to where it is today has been both stressful and enjoyable, like any sort of business.” Thanks to his extensive professional experience in a vast array of settings, Neale has brought the type of ingenuity and resilience to Cafe Borellas that makes it the widely renowned and respected eatery it is today. “On survivor we’d open our shipping container full of food and we’d have to design a menu there and then for lunch and dinner,” he said. “That was great experience, to help me just walk in their confidently and go with it. “I’ve bought that experience and bits and pieces from other places here and realised you have to give the customers what they want. “Too often you see chefs who don’t understand their customer demographic and it doesn’t serve them well. “You need to change it up and keep it interesting, but not too often – you need balance. “I see Cafe Borellas as very open, friendly and comforting – nothing out of the box. You’ll be able to walk in and order something you’ll like. There’s some interesting things on the menu but there’s also the old fashioned classics people love.” So if you’re looking for a quality meal, delivered with friendly and professional service in a gorgeous setting, look no further than Cafe Borellas and their scrumptious winter menu. “At the moment we’re doing really good lamb shanks, beef cheeks and pulled pork. Anyone can cook lamb shanks but we cook them for so long – 15 hours and same with the beef cheek.”

I WISH to reply to Denise Cameron (NewsWeekly, 16 July). Again, Ms Cameron seems confused about what is the real problem in Albury - but then she lives in North Fitzroy! It is not about abortion (that has been settled by state law), nor is it about rights to protest or free speech, we support this. It is about the weekly violation of a person’s rights to attend a legal medical clinic, in a country town, and not have their medical privacy violated by people who may know them. Many women travel to Melbourne to have the same procedure, by the same doctor, but costing them so much more in travel, time and accommodation costs, just to preserve their privacy. The information about a Supreme Court decision in America is totally irrelevant to Australians; Ms Cameron forgets to mention the highly successful “exclusion zone” for protesters outside women’s health clinics in Tasmania. This is what Rights to Privacy, Albury want the NSW Government to debate. Yes, a NSW statewide petition has been launched; the vast majority of Australians (over 80 per cent in all surveys) believe a woman is able to decide what is best for her, without getting intimidated by religious extremists. The petition is available on Facebook; Rights to privacy, Albury. Associate Professor Pieter Mourik AM Spokesman Rights to Privacy, Albury.

I AM writing on behalf of Guide Dogs NSW/ ACT to thank our loyal supporters in and around Albury, for their ongoing patronage of our organisation. I am in no doubt that this support has contributed to Guide Dogs being voted Australia’s Most Trusted Charity, for the second year running in the annual Reader’s Digest Most Trusted Brands poll. Importantly, this trust and support enables thousands of people across NSW and the ACT who are blind or vision-impaired to get around their communities safely, confidently and inde-

pendently. Trust is also the fabric of the extraordinary partnership that develops between a person and their Guide Dog. Over the next 10 years it’s predicted that at least 700 Guide Dogs will need to be trained to keep up with the growing demand from NSW and ACT residents who are blind or vision-impaired, at a staggering cost of over $25 million. We receive less than one per cent in government funding, so it is the generosity and trust of residents of Albury that will make this possible. Again, on behalf of Guide Dogs, I would like to sincerely thank the people of Albury for their continued support. Graeme White, CEO, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT.

Beware of hepatitis VIRAL hepatitis has become a silent killer. Four Victorians die every week as a consequence of viral hepatitis, and over 120,000 (two per cent) of Victorians are living with the condition. Liver cancer largely caused by viral hepatitis is the fastest-growing cause of cancer death in Australia. Almost more concerning than these figures is the general lack of community awareness and understanding of the disease, and the lack of resources to stem the tide of incidence, stigma and inaction. The depth of the stigma means that many atrisk people are too scared to get tested and treated. Around 56,000 Victorians live with hepatitis B but less than three per cent seek treatment each year. In the case of the estimated 65,000 Victorians with hepatitis C, the rate is even lower – less than two per cent. Without action, one in four people will die without treatment for hepatitis B, and it is estimated that there will be a 245 per cent increase (in Australia) in liver cancer due to hepatitis C by 2030. It costs $20 for a test but hundreds of thousands of dollars for a transplant. Find out more and join us in ending this silent killer: http://www.hepvic.org.au/page/welcomehepatitis-victoria-join-our-hepup-campaign Melanie Eagle, CEO, Hepatitis Victoria

Boost for recycling ALBURY City Council is set to receive a major boost in funding for the Community Recycling Centre. NSW State member for Albury, Greg Aplin this week announced a NSW Government grant of $213,580 for the centre. “This grant of over $200,000 has been provided through the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Waste Less Recycle More initiative,” Mr Aplin said. “This will allow the temporary household recycling drop-off centre at Albury Waste Management Centre to be upgraded into a permanent purpose-built facility providing a new, improved service for people to drop off their potentially hazardous and problem household waste for free.” “This upgrade will be open year-round, seven days a week for residents to drop off waste that can’t go in their household bins.” “This includes paints, cooking and motor oils, gas cylinders, batteries and smoke detectors which will then be disposed of safely or recycled,” Mr Aplin said. “These types of facilities benefit the community and the environment, so it is a win-win.”

Volunteers prepare for the planting day.

society Make-over for creek Plants up for award SIX Mile Creek at Thurgoona is set to get a make-over of sorts, thanks to the annual Community Tree Planting day on Sunday. From 10am on Sunday, members of the community of Thurgoona are invited to come along and help plant native shrubs along the creek to provide food and shelter for the birds and animals which live in the woodlands throughout Thurgoona and the wider Albury area. The Community Planting Day is an opportunity for anyone who is interested in helping the local environment, to also learn to identify weeds, and maybe see a squirrel glider inside nest boxes via a remote camera.

The day is hosted by the team from Albury Environmental Lands, which is a project of NSW Crown Lands, and brings together local groups such as Woolshed-Thurgoona Landcare, Thurgoona Progress Association, Charles Sturt University, Albury City Council and Murray Local Land Services, so people can meet the scientists, engineers, wildlife ecologists, pest weed specialists and other people who care about local wildflowers, and exchange information about what’s in our backyard. Crown Lands Albury Environmental Lands Project manager Richard Ahearn said it was a special day for families and people of all ages

to come together, enjoy a barbecue and get their hands dirty making a difference to the habitat of Six Mile Creek. “It’s a good opportunity for me to meet the neighbours,” he said. “Albury Environmental Lands cover more than 1,900 hectares of bushland in and around Albury, particularly in the Thurgoona-Wirlinga area and a lot of people may not realise that their gardens back on to this special land. “These lands have been designated as conservation areas for threatened species, such as squirrel gliders, Sloane’s froglet and the regent honeyeater. They provide a restful backdrop to the urban areas and pro-

vide a place for local people to walk or ride bicycles. “This is our second Community Planting Day which gives our neighbours an opportunity to be involved with us as well as giving my team the chance to talk to old and new residents and to explain what we are doing to manage these important wildlife links from the Albury Ranges to the Murray River. Special guest presenter at the planting day is Dr Dave Watson, Associate Professor at CSU, who is a passionate ecologist and makes learning about “critters” entertaining, especially for kids. He will take guided walks along the creek to point out special plants and animals.

THE Australian Plants Society Albury Wodonga from Wodonga West has been nominated for the Parks Victoria Environmental Sustainability Award in the 2014 Victorian Regional Achievement and Community Awards. The awards encourage, acknowledge and reward the valuable contributions individuals, communities and businesses are making throughout regional and rural Victoria. Judging is scheduled for Wednesday 10 September. Nominations are open until the 23 July. Prizes are up for grabs including $2000 from Bank of Melbourne or airtime packages on PRIME7 for category winners.

Flame trees will find By TANIA PHILLIPS MORE than 40 riders have taken on the brandnew “Flame Trees Trail at Beechworth in the latest round of this year’s RAMBO Mountain Bike Series. Race director and secretary of the host club, Shane Flint, said the event was round three of five in this year’s Riverina and Alpine Mountain Bike Open and the first time the new trail had been used in competition. “The track had never been raced on before, he said. “It was Flame Tree just outside of Beechworth. The competitors seemed to love it. Most people thought it would be easy because it wasn’t on a very big hill. However he said over the three hours of the main race it proved very testing for the competitors, who came from throughout the region for the event. He said weather was perfect for racing with Albury’s Craig Metcalfe, coming back from illness, proving too strong in the three-hour A Grade event. The next race is set for Bright on 24 August.

Beautiful You Shimmerz will bring out the beauty in you YOU go into Shimmerz Total Beauty to be pampered, to relax and to feel beautiful. So if you go there for a makeover it’s only fair that from time to time the business itself gets a bit of beauty treatment too. And that’s just what is happening now. Gone are the bright pink walls, replaced with the gentle relaxing ambience of French Provincial Shabby Chic decor. The new decor is thanks to new owner Lyndell Picone, who took over four months ago and is gradually turning the premises into the business of her dreams. Not that it wasn’t already – you see two years ago Lyndell remembers telling her best friend and her son that she would love to own Shimmerz one day. “Then at the end of March this year my friend rang and said you wouldn’t believe it but Shimmerz is for sale,” Lyndell laughed. It was the name that attracted her, a name she says is feminine and “speaks volumes” and of course the location – Shop 1/339 Urana Road, Lavington. It’s a little distance from where she had been renting a chair and

working in Wodonga for many years but such is her reputation that almost her entire clientele has followed her to the new premises. And Lyndell has promised to make Shimmerz a one-stop shop for

beauty, with a hairdresser renting a chair and working on the premises as well. She offers deluxe manicures and pedicures and the latest in longerlasting vinyl polishes (available to

take home) as well as waxing, tinting, bronze sprays and Brazilians. For further information and to make an appointment phone 02 6040 6776.

When the battle is won, this production will leave you feeling uplifted and exhilarated with the belief that the impossible is possible. “We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he today that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition: And gentlemen in England now a-bed Shall think themselves accursed they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.” It is a production not to be missed and this is your chance to see it at the Albury Entertainment Centre, for “Harry, England and St George”. “WE few, we happy few - we band of brothers.” The St Crispin Day speech from Henry V is one of the most famous speeches in Shakespeare and the Bell Shakespeare Company is one of the most famous companies performing the works of the bard. So the combination is something special - and this production touring regional Australia is something a little special. Director Damien Ryan’s vision for his Henry V is inspired by a true story - in 1941, for 57 consecutive nights during the London Blitz, a group of boys trapped in a bunker rehearsed a new play each week and would then perform it for others in the shelter. This production explores the rite of passage that violence and conflict offer as a threshold to manhood. It confronts the fact that - for all the horrors of war - true courage and brotherhood can inspire remarkable achievements. In this gripping new Henry V, a talented young cast tell the story of a king who unites his ‘band of broth-

home entertainment

WITH GEOFF HABERECHT OF TRU HIFI

Phases of the hi-fi life COMING face to face with many different home entertainment conundrums keeps the grey matter going. Whether it is making the old relevant again, redeveloping a mish-mash of products that were never designed to go together to create harmony in the household with size vs performance, each individual case has its own challenges. Those challenges often come with simple solutions from simply a poor installation, to arriving at somebody’s home to discover a jumble of no-name products that look good and sound exactly what they paid for - 50 per cent off. While it is said there is no such thing as a free lunch, there is such a thing as paying for a three-course dinner and receiving the lunch. Every piece of technology has a use-by date and to estimate the length of the usefulness of the technology is sometimes difficult, however some simple guidelines repeatedly occur.

When we have a new product entering the market it is usually pitched at the customer who has to have the latest regardless of cost. The product usually lasts in this sphere for three years before it trickles down to the next level. The companies then usually have most of the research and development costs back and the pricing enters the reach of most consumers; this window also lasts around three years. When it has run its race and the next generation is occurring to the must-haves, the product then enters the final phase or price leader phase. This usually becomes a combination of the six-year-old technology coupled with some cheaper manufacturing. The client that traditionally purchases at this time often has the feeling that the product goes out of fashion quickly and drops off in performance after a few years due to lower grade components employed. A product may easily be

eight years into its cycle, even though that model was released in the current year. When is the best time to buy? All three categories have advantages. The first provides the ability to enjoy the technology longer and in the earlier generations they are usually a little over-engineered and made, the result is the longevity and reliability this category enjoys. The second is the most popular at the time when most become aware of the product, possibly the supporting software has become abundant and many of the middle grade brands enter the market creating a more competitive environment. The third provides benefits and standards that only a few years earlier were considered unaffordable to many, the downside often is the leading factory makers have left this field or have employed another manufacturer to make the product on behalf of the principle brand.

IT’S probably the best film this year to feature a hyper-intelligent, genetically engineered talking raccoon. Or how about Vin Diesel extending his acting range as a walking tree - I swear I’m not making this up - whose dialogue consists of saying "I am Groot". How you feel about Guardians of the Galaxy is going to be determined by how you feel about Marvel films in general.

If you love them, you’ll love it, if not, then not so much. That said, it’s better than the usual Marvel fare. The little-known Chris Pratt takes the lead role of Peter Quill - lesser known as "Star Lord" a cosmic scavenger chasing a valuable orb. He and the other motley crew of guardians want the orb, as do a mix of bad guys, and everyone else. Cue the usual hijinks, which are often quite entertaining. The film has more humour than the usual Marvel offerings, and certainly doesn’t take itself too

seriously. Chris Pratt puts in a credible performance in the lead role, joined by a (green) alien Zoe Saldana. Oh and the raccoon, known as Rocket? That’s where Bradley Cooper comes in, without a Hangover. It’s a harmless, well-scripted cartoon of a film with an enjoyable soundtrack and an escapist mindset - perfectly suitable fodder until the third instalment of The Expendables arrives this week. - Jason Beck

It’s a four seasons hit THE “Icelandic” weather conditions we have experienced in the past couple of weeks can’t diminish the magic that snowcapped mountains can do for the spirit. To walk to the front of the feature property, an eight-bedroom lodge and see the abundance of snow on Falls Creek and Mt Bogong is somewhat inspirational, as is knowing that within a 30-45 minute timeframe you can be enjoying the fun of the snowfields. That access to the ski fields is just one of the benefits of 16 St Bernard Drive, Tawonga South. In a residential area of good quality homes, Baench’s Lodge blends into the neighbourhood well. It is also hard to go past its proximity to restaurants, the lovely all year round climate - where you experience the distinct four seasons - and the commercial and banking facilities in next door Mt Beauty. Australians are becoming more attracted to the outdoors, and in particular to hiking in the high country and this is a great base for such activities. All eight bedrooms have their own ensuite, plus use of a huge “commercial style” kitchen and common room as well as a dedicated drying room.

The building is ripe for expansion, with the garage footings able to take a second storey extension and with the block at approximately 1600 square metres, there is potentially room for an expansion (subject to council approval). The property will have appeal to a broad range of prospective buyers. The obvious one is as a ski lodge but also as a backpackers’ lodge, B&B with some alterations subject to council approval, a retreat house for a religious or school organisation or a corporate retreat. An entrepreneur may look at a combination of these groups and market it accordingly. Tourist agencies are promoting the Alpine region as an all year playground, with good fishing, four-wheel-driving, hiking, and bushwalking all gaining in popularity. The lodge is fully furnished. Management of the property is virtually by remote, as bookings are taken by phone or email and cleaners are on hand to make sure the changeover between guests goes smoothly. The owner is looking to finalise his retirement plans and will listen to any worthwhile proposition put forward.

which sold for much more. Naturally there are homes that sold much closer to $1 million, in areas such as Queenscliff. But the median price data, which includes all sales reported to REIV for the quarter, is a much more accurate reflection than the occasional headline-grabbing sale. Looking at the upper quartile median price for some of these areas – that is, the median for the top 25 per cent of sales over the three months – shows that a substantial number of properties in some areas are selling for extremely good prices. For example in Barwon Heads the upper quartile median was $880,000, while in Queenscliff it was $800,000 and Macedon $793,250 (both fewer than 50 sales). Meanwhile, at Woodend, the upper quartile was $740,000, at Torquay $735,000 and at Lake Wendouree it was $730,000. While many people move to regional Victoria attracted by the more affordable property prices, for others it is a lifestyle choice. They want to move to the country for the quality of life it offers without compromising on the quality of home in which they live. The latest median house prices show that many parts of Victoria can offer extremely attractive homes, which are the equal of any in Melbourne – but without the high pricetags seen in Melbourne, where more than 50 suburbs now have a median above $1 million.

IT’S NO secret that homes are cheaper in regional Victoria – in fact affordability is attracting many budget-conscious and first home buyers to the state’s regional centres and country towns. But while there are certainly bargains to be had, not all of Victoria’s best homes are in Melbourne. REIV’s median home price data shows that across the state there were more than a dozen areas with a median of more than $500,000 in the June quarter. Mostly, these were places with that something extra – a coastal location or magnificent bushland. And all are within reasonable proximity of Melbourne. Some of regional Victoria’s most expensive real estate was in picturesque Barwon Heads, where the median house price was $690,000 – higher than the Melbourne median of $658,000. In Point Lonsdale the median was $645,000. Nearby Queenscliff’s median of $740,000 was the highest recorded outside Melbourne for the quarter, but unlike Barwon Heads and Point Lonsdale, there were fewer than 50 sales there for the previous 12 months. Other areas where the median topped the half-million mark were beachside Apollo Bay, Ocean Grove and Torquay, Newtown in Geelong, Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree, and the Macedon Ranges towns of Gisborne, Macedon, and Woodend. But of course a median price is the midpoint of any group of sales, so there were many regional homes

Local Sport Big winners for Bushrangers 2014 Big V Season Awards Night THE North East Bushrangers would like to congratulate Rachel Jeffery and Jon Lindhe for winning the club’s inaugural Most Valuable Player awards. Lady Bushrangers MVP Season at a glance: Jeffery was a stand-out for the Green’s Garden and Ag Lady Bushrangers all season. Playing in 17 of the 18 games, the Lady Bushrangers captain led from the front all season to finish with season averages of 18.9 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists. This included seven games of 20 points or more, with a season high 28

and five games in which Jeffery finished with a double-double. The Green’s Garden and Ag Lady Bushrangers Top 5 Votes: 34 Rachel Jeffery; 27 Stacey Browne; 14 Alana Sutton; 11 Sarah Mellington; and 10 Holly Bawden. Bushrangers MVP Season at a glance: Lindhe had a delayed start to his season which showed early in his season before beginning to step up his contributions on both ends of the court. In 17 games for the Bushrang-

ers, Lindhe finished with averages of 13.3ppg, 6.4rpg and 2.2apg. Always in the mix on the defensive end, Lindhe was effective on shutting down key defensive match-ups despite leading the league in fouls. Lindhe managed three double-doubles for the season. The Subway Bushrangers Top 5 Votes: 27 Jon Lindhe; 22 Dylan Webb and Bobby Tye; 14 Josh McKay; 13 Lloyd Wright; and 7 Darcy Locke. Rising Star Award: The Bushrangers also awarded a Rising Star for both sides, with Jade

McCowan of the Lady Bushrangers and Lloyd Wright of the Bushrangers taking out the prize. Both youngsters had great first seasons as they settled into consistent role players for their respective sides. McCowan finished the season averaging 5.4ppg and 3.2rpg, while Wright made the most of his opportunities to average 8.7 points and 3.9 rebounds. Leadership Award: The final awards handed out on the night were for leadership in each respective side. Stacey Browne was the recipient for the Lady Bushrangers and Sam McDonald for the Bushrangers.

Both senior players showed the attitudes required both on and off the court, while passing on their knowledge to the younger players in both squads. Browne and McDonald both did a great job of embracing the development philosophy behind this program, while ensuring a positive culture was built. With season one under the Bushrangers’ belt, they head into the offseason looking to build on the foundations laid this season and be ready to launch into the 2015 Big V season. - North East Bushrangers

Late goals the path to victory TWO late goals have given victory to the Albury Hotspurs in a hard-fought Albury Wodonga Football Association game against St Pat’s at Aloyisius Park, Albury at the weekend. Although out of finals contention, the two teams put in big performances before Hotspurs finally came away with the points following a 2-0 victory. St Pat’s president John Mahoney said his team were in the game until the final minutes. The game was locked at nil-all at the break, with neither team able to break the deadlock. Mahoney said his side had made plenty of breaks but were unable to make it to the back of the net. “The boys put up a strong performance for the first half but lost concentration in the second,” he said. Hotspurs - three spots higher on the ladder than last-placed St Pat’s finally broke through to score in the 66th minute through Mason with Thorman putting the game out of St Pat’s reach with a second in the 75th.

O&M FOOTY2014

Unforgettable finals Simon

Says with SIMON CORR FINALS are clearly on the horizon for all of our local football leagues, and the early indication suggests it could be a series we will never forget. In the Tallangatta and District Football League, which completes its home and away season this weekend, any one of six teams can legitimately win the premiership. The closeness of this competition is illustrated none better than in the form of Dederang Mt Beauty, who are in danger of missing the finals from sixth position, despite recently defeating all three of the top sides. In the Hume league, things are just as open with the top three just one game apart and four teams separated by a game or less still bustling to make the final two finals positions. While the Ovens and Murray may not be quite the lottery of its district league cousins, it still is a very open race with literally a toss of the coin between the top three. Lavington, Albury and Yarrawonga have clearly been the league’s best teams, but which of these three will reign supreme on that final Sunday in September ... perhaps this weekend will give us a little more insight. Lavington and Yarrawonga will bring finalstype footy forward a few more weeks than scheduled, when they meet at the Lavington Sports Ground this Saturday. Both teams have so much to play for, with Lavington looking to secure the Minor Premiership, and the Pigeons looking to build on some recent good form as they make a tilt at their third consecutive premiership in a row. Plenty has been said about the Pigeons this year, with rumours of instability and disharmony bantered around with regular monotony, but not much has been said of their on field ability until last weekend’s breath-taking performance. Yarrawonga were clinical and exhilarating in their 106-point massacre of Nth Albury. The Hoppers did have some injury concerns and were left rotation-less, but that shouldn’t detract from the Pigeons’ dominance. With Pettifer and Fev cutting loose in attack, and Ednie and Bonat running rings in the midfield, the Pigeons are still very much in the premiership mix. Many will be quick to point out that North Albury are clearly not of the same calibre as Lavington, to which I agree, but it should also be acknowledged that the Hoppers have basically been competitive in every game they have played this year, well until last week anyway. The Panthers caught them off guard last time when they travelled to Pigeon land with a deplet-

ed line-up and have probably never really gone into a big game in the last few years as a favourite. This has significantly changed, and after adding the scalp of Albury to this season’s achievements will enter this contest as the “Hunted”. Just what impact this new position will have on the Panthers’ psyche remains to be seen, but I am pretty sure you can guarantee it will not change the selfless and well-drilled techniques

they continue to execute to a T. It will be big, it will be finals-like, it will be brutal ... and it will showcase everything that we continue to love about this great competition. * Game to be broadcast LIVE on 1494 2AY. In other games this weekend, Tigers forward Setanta O’hAilpin could possibly kick the eight goals he requires to bring up the century when Albury host the bottom-placed Wodonga.

Wangaratta should continue to keep their finals light flickering when they travel to Birallee Park for a meeting with the Raiders. Nth Albury will need to re-group when they host the inconsistent Corowa Rutherglen, and the Wangaratta Rovers risk jeopardising their spot in the top five should they not bring their game face for a clash with the very difficult Myrtleford Alpine Saints.
