‘Excitement’ as big firms eye Pt Henry By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
GO WEST TO FIND VALUE P21-23
SEVERAL multinational companies have expressed interest in Alcoa’s Point Henry site, Mayor Darryn Lyons has revealed. Cr Lyons told a Geelong Business Network breakfast “at least four to five major companies around the world were looking keenly at the site. He was “extremely excited about the possibilities for the aluminium smelter and rolling mill site, the breakfast heard. “We’ve also had development proposals for the site coming through, from big residential developments to golf
courses to all sorts of stuff, Cr Lyons said. “Can this mayor sit here and say what this is going to be in the future? No, but some of the plans are over the next 20 years. “Obviously we all want that sorted out as quickly as possible but I think the news is going to be good. Alcoa’s Point Henry site will become vacant near the end of the year when the company completes decommissioning of its aluminium plant after ceasing operations at the start of the month. Most of the 800 staff have already left the site. Alcoa owns and manages 575 hectares
of land at Point Henry, of which 500Ha is outside the smelter and rolling mill perimeter. The land includes Point Henry Signal Station, wetlands, sewage and water quality treatment ponds and part of former Cheetham Salt’s Moolap salt works. Alcoa’s land adjoins the eastern shoreline, with its buffer zone extending to Portarlington-Geelong Rd. The Point Henry smelter started operating in 1962, producing 190,000 tonnes of aluminium annually, exporting about half and the rest processed at the neighbouring rolling mill.
An Alcoa spokesperson said Point Henry was in the “very early stages of the decommissioning process. “Our aim is to return the asset to productive use and a team has been established to begin the process, which includes a comprehensive site assessment, the spokesperson said. “This cannot be completed until after the rolling mill ends operations later this year. “Naturally there is interest in the site, However, we need to complete the assessment process before decisions can be made on future use. SuperCharge & Century Batteries

Double Take GEELONG coach Chris Scott was as nonplussed as anyone over the Stevie J jumper-ripping incident against Fremantle last Saturday. “Interesting tactic, rip a player’s jumper so he has to go off. Aaron Sandilands did it, didn’t he? He’s a big strong man,” the former Freo assistance coach smiled. “If you’re strong enough to go and rip a player’s jumper off, then more power to you, I reckon.” But Scott stopped short of adopting the tactic should a “genuine great of our era”, Chris Judd, prove troublesome to the Cats on Friday night. He’s just hoping for a ripper game. THE MAYOR with one of the biggest personal brands in the world this week took aim at City Hall’s wavy flag-and-water logo

currently in vogue. “Our logo needs seriously to be looked at,” Dazza declared. “I don’t like what the City of Greater Geelong looks like with the things coming out of the ends, I’m not sure what they are.” He cited the recent change to Enterprise Geelong, with the addition of the word opportunity, creating the acronym EGO. No one was surprised.
THE NEW uniforms sport a different logo as the handover happened at Shell’s Geelong refinery to new owner Vitol. The handover of the company keys is believed to have includ-
ed the gas lighter that keeps the landmark flame burning. RADIO’S David Mann brought back fond memories for Cats legend Doug Wade while MCing Geelong’s Presidents’ Dinner ahead of the Freo match on Saturday. Mann was interviewing the former forward when he brought up Wade’s post-footy role with Sam Newman as hair-product salesmen. Apparently the pair spent a good deal of time, er, servicing country hairdressers. Mann said one of Wade’s former clients told him all about the duo’s antics. “Do you know who it was?” Mann enquired of Wade. “It was my wife!” Luckily for the convivial atmosphere, Mann apparently had nothing to get into a lather about.

GPAC ‘unsafe’, in need of $140m for upgrade By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG Performing Arts Centre is “unsafe” and “no longer fit for purpose”, according to a funding submission. The GPAC board’s $140 million plan to redevelop the ageing centre said it was now “non-compliant, inaccessible and non-sustainable” and must be replaced. “GPAC was built with a 20-to-25year lifespan. In 2014 it will be 33 years old,” the board said. “Geelong, as home to (the National Disability Insurance Agency), needs to set standards for accessible public buildings.” The redevelopment proposal is part of a Geelong cultural precinct master plan but faces competition for funding
IN DEMAND: A concept image of the GPAC redevelopment. from other local projects including a new Yarra St pier and further upgrades at Simonds Stadium. GPAC’s plan expected increasing demand amid the region’s “unprecedented” population growth to 500,000 by 2040. “GPAC already attracts 235,000 attendances from a regional population
of 290,000, or one in two households from greater Geelong.” The redevelopment would also stimulate economic development and create 1300 jobs, including 600 during construction. The plan identified the cultural precinct as a “critical element” in revitalising Geelong’s city centre and boosting tourism. GPAC citied the support of regional bodies including Geelong’s council, municipal alliance body G21 and Committee for Geelong. The two-stage redevelopment would include a new $30 million Ryrie St facade and spend $110 million upgrading the Lt Malop St entrance, improving theatres and expanding GPAC into neighbouring spaces and sites.
The project would also add a floor of “creative industries” offices with conference and hospitality areas and deliver an outdoor plaza and performance space. GPAC’s floor area would increase from 11,000 square metres to 18,500sqm and the building would rise to five storeys. But Mayor Darryn Lyons told a Geelong Business Network breakfast last week that the city should first invest in “economic drivers” before spending on the cultural precinct. He cited proposals for a Yarra St Pier, a convention centre and a mineral springs spa at Eastern Beach as projects that would “leverage off private investment”. “I’m passionate about GPAC as well but we need economic drivers first to build our cultural precincts.”

In brief $4.6b call GEELONG is part of a push for a $4.6 billion funding injection into regional roads and public transport. Regional Cities Victoria, of which Geelong is the largest member, said governments must spend the money over the next five years to support a “more thriving, diverse and economically sustainable Victoria”.
Surgery cuts A $25 MILLION funding increase will help carve further inroads into surgery waiting lists at Geelong Hospital, Premier Denis Napthine has announced. He said the cash boost for operational purposes would lift the hospital’s annual funding to $421 million.
Bodies merge TWO OF the region’s leading youth and disability services providers have agree to a merger. The boards of Barwon Youth and Glastonbury Community Services said a working party would “explore the immediate and longer-term efficiencies” of the merger, which they described as a “positive development”.
Geelong branded GEELONG must “brand” itself to attract investors and new residents, according to business and government representatives based in the city. Geelong’s council is leading work on the Brand Geelong project, which has about $80,000 in funding contributions for a “strategy that sells the region to the world”.
Hockey boost “BIGGER” hockey tournaments are set for Geelong after the official opening of a new $1.9 million pitch at Corio’s Stead Park, according to Victorian Sport and Recreation Minister Damian Drum. He said the upgrade to a dual-pitch hockey centre gave the region’s “aspiring Hockeyroos and Kookaburras… the prefect venue to develop their skills”.
Museum award A PROJECT helping dementia sufferers reminisce has won a state award for Geelong’s National Wool Museum. The Museums Australia (Victoria) Award for Medium Museums was in response to Reminiscence Cottage, which created an “immersive space” for visitors with dementia to recount fading memories.

Viva Las Vegas victory for our aerosport champions By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG’S aerodance team has come home with gold medals from an International Aerobic Championships in Las Vegas. The six 15 and 16-year-olds took out their section ahead of teams from Germany and Argentina. They were the only members of a
strong Australian contingent to win medals at the event, the longest running championships of its kind in the world. Their coach, Justine Bratanavicius, who was also co-coach of the Australian team, said the girls were emotional after their win. “All their hard work was worth it in the end. It was a long journey and
it hit them suddenly when they were announced as the winners.” Ms Bratanavicius said the group, which trains at Grovedale’s Aerosports Allstars, was leading narrowly after the first round. “It’s always hard to stay on top but they managed it. Their quickness in synchronisation and their tight formations nailed it.”

The team’s two-minute routine combined hip-hop dance within overall gymnastics moves choreographed to music. The competition was judged on flexibility, strength, coordination, agility and presentation. The team was Rikki Bell-Warren, Tahnee Bratanavicius, Bridget McNamara, Paige Sutterby, Jessica Ormeno and Roisin Selvarajoo.

Christmas tree ‘only $320,000’ Nine-storey decoration to attract ‘thousands’
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN TOURISTS will flock to Geelong to see its carbon fibre and aluminium floating Christmas tree, according to Mayor Darryn Lyons. “When I saw it, the design of the Christmas tree sent a chill up and down my spine,” Cr Lyons said. “Tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands will come and look at it.” Cr Lyons said the nine-storey construction had been wrongly reported as costing $1 million.
“It’s about $320,000 and we’ll be using it over five and up to 10 years and it’s being built in Geelong. “At night the tree will feature a light show that will incorporate both internal and external lighting elements. The light show will be reflected in the water. “The Christmas tree will add fun and glamour to our city but at the same time it is a part of a very deliberate strategy to support our
local tourism and retail sectors.” Council announced this week that Melbourne-based Creative Production Services had begun working on the tree. The company has previously supplied custom productions for Federation Square, Crown Casino, Chadstone, Eureka Skydeck and Melbourne Arts Centre. Cr Lyons said the tree was part of a Light and Decorate Geelong
project to enchance key trading precincts. “By installing high quality and exciting lighting and decorative elements in key parts of the city we’ll create an environment that makes Geelong more appealing for people of all ages and encourage them to stay in the city after dark. “The Light and Decorate program will support shops, cafes and restaurants that are reliant
on active streets to remain viable and will be rolled out across the greater Geelong area.” Cr Lyons said the project would operate year around, with additional elements for Christmas and special events. A suspended wire structure at the intersection of Malop and Moorabool Streets would support a permanent lighting display, he said.

ROAD fatalities in Geelong fell almost 80 per cent in the past financial year, according to Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) figures. Three people died in the 12 months to 30 June compared with 14 in 2012/2013. Four died on Surf Coast roads last financial year, the same as in the previous 12 months. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos welcomed the reduction in Geelong deaths but called for the community to stay safe on roads. “It’s positive to see reductions in fatalities on the region’s roads but until we reach a situation where no families are left to deal with the unimaginable grief of losing a loved one there is little to celebrate,” he said. “We need every driver in Geelong and the Surf Coast to make a commitment to themselves and the people they care about to do everything they can to be safe when they get in their cars.” Mr Katos said a downward trend in Victorian road trauma over recent years was a result of improvements to the state’s roads as well as improved driver behaviour and developments in vehicle safety technology. The TAC has also provided police with funding for targeted operations on specific driver behaviours in high-risk areas at chosen times. More information on the State Government’s road safety strategy is available at roadsafety.vic. gov.au.

Priority lighting locations would include central Geelong, Ocean Grove, Portarlington, St Leonards, Highton, Corio, Geelong West, Newtown, Belmont and Lara. Cr Lyons said Civic Centre and Busport car parks would become bases for lighting projections onto the facades of major buildings in central Geelong. “Lighting projections are a key part of Light and Decorate Geelong project and will give us great flexibility in celebrating special events during the year.”

A GEELONG brewer has won the job of a lifetime – head judge of Australia’s premier beer awards. Warren Pawsey, head brewer at Little Creatures, will take on the role at the Australian International Beer Awards after acting as its interim head judge last year. Mr Pawsey said leading judges in tasting top beers from around the world was “a great privilege” and he was “thrilled” to accept the challenge. “The awards are incredibly important to the global brewing industry and a wonderful opportunity for brewers of all sizes to mix with the best in the business,” he said. Mr Pawsey’s 27 years of industry experience has included judging roles at the World Beer Cup as well as in festivals in America and New Zealand. Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria, which runs the international beer awards, welcomed Mr Pawsey as head judge. Society chief Mark Sullivan said Mr Pawsey’s “extensive experience and global knowledge…made him a valuable part of our dedicated team”.
Reservoir spill as storages up UP to 600 million litres of drinking water spilled daily from the region’s main Otways reservoir after it reached capacity at the end of last month. West Barwon Reservoir began spilling two weeks ago for the third consecutive year. Located at Forrest in the Otway Ranges, the reservoir supplies the majority of Barwon Water’s Geelong customers. Barwon Water revealed the reservoir reached its capacity of 21,504 million litres on 31 July. The following evening the reservoir began sending around
600 million litres of water over its spillway. The flow later decreased to around 100 million litres a day. Barwon Water measured the reservoir at 99.7 per cent of capacity this week. Water released from West Barwon flows down a channel to the Wurdee Boluc Reservoir where it is treated and distributed to customers. Above-average rain in July contributed to the spill. West Barwon recorded 159mm of rain for the month, compared to the July monthly average of 130.5mm.
Not enough time in your life to commit to year round golf?
The region’s storages were at 82.9 per cent of capacity on Tuesday after recording 22mm of rain over the previous seven days. More rain in subsequent days promises to send the level higher. The region’s storages were this week almost nine per cent higher than the same time last year. Last year’s storages reached a maximum capacity of 92.7 per cent late in November. The region now has enough water in storage to supply consumers for more than three years without further rain, based on 2012/2013’s average weekly consumption of 590Ml.

Owner’s $150m refinery spend By PAUL MILLAR IN A SHOW of commitment, Corio refinery’s new owners have pledged to invest $150 million at the iconic site over the next two years. Swiss-based, Dutch-owned Vitol officially took over the landmark Geelong site on Wednesday. The refinery and downstream operations have been renamed Energy Austra-
lia. Viva Energy Australia will own and operate the refinery, its office locations and the Shell brand in the downstream sector. Viva Energy chief executive Scott Wyatt said he was “delighted to be leading this business for the next phase of its development as Viva Energy Australia”. “We expect to invest $1 billion over the next five years so we can continue to meet more than a quarter of Australia’s
fuel needs efficiently and safely. “The Viva Energy business is strong and we have ambitious plans to grow in Australia.” Viva Energy spokesperson Jessica Marriner said the $1 billion investment was aimed at improving refining at the Geelong refinery and expanding supply capabilities to support growth plans over the next five years. “Specifically, we expect to invest the
$150 million in the planned major turnarounds at Geelong during the next two years,” she said. “The global refining business is challenging but we believe that Geelong has the potential to play an important role in Australia’s energy future.” Viva Energy comprises Shell’s Geelong refinery and an 870-site retail business along with its bulk fuels, bitumen, chemicals and part of its lubricants
businesses in Australia. Viva Energy will be the exclusive distributor of Shell-branded fuels and lubricants in Australia. The majority of Shell’s downstream staff in Australia will remain with Viva Energy. In February 2014 Vitol announced it had reached a binding agreement with Shell to acquire its Australian downstream business, excluding aviation operations, for $2.9 billion.
‘Ice forums’ for strategy
Fewer readers for Advertiser
A TWO-day forum will hammer out a strategy to beat ice use in Geelong, according to a leading policeman. Superintendent Daryl Clifton said the forums this week would come up with “community-based solutions” to the drug scourge. Ice, or methamphetamine, has increasingly affected communities across Victoria in the past few years. The drug has been linked to rising rates of crime and violence. Ice-related ambulance calls increased 177 per cent in the past year. Geelong accounted for 20 per cent of calls outside metropolitan Melbourne. “Like many communities across Victoria, Geelong and the Barwon region are feeling the effects of ice’” Supt Clifton said. “It is clear that, while most areas have received a large amount of information on this issue, there is a need to act in preventing the use of ice and education our local communities.” Supt Clifton, chair of Greater Geelong Collective Community Effort on Substance Abuse, said “passionate and motivated” representatives would attend this week’s forums in a “leadership program like no other”.
THE GEELONG Advertiser lost about 10 per cent of its readers in the 12 months to June, according to Roy Morgan Research. Readership of the Advertiser’s weekday papers fell 11.1 per cent and Saturdays were down nine per cent. Roy Morgan Research said weekday readership was now 54,000 compared with 63,000 in June 2013. Saturdays were down to 81,000 from 89,000. Roy Morgan Research has long been regarded as the leading measure of Australian newspapers readership. The company focuses on paid papers in capital cities and large regional centres. The readership losses follow ongoing reductions in the Advertiser’s audited circulation – the number of papers sold. Audit Bureau of Circulations reported an 8.2 per cent decline in weekday Advertiser sales in the March quarter. Saturdays were down 7.6 per cent. Weekday sales fell to 20,391 from 22,208 and Saturdays to 36,119 from 39,092. The figures reflect ongoing decline in Advertiser sales, which have dropped around a quarter in the past decade. In 2003 the paper reported “record” Saturday sales of 48,133. The bureau is set to release June quarter figures this week.

Racing club on track with upgrades By EMILY IANNELLO A MINOR revamp will spruce up Geelong’s Racecourse in time for the city’s premier race this year. Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos announced a new owners and trainers bar, improved perimeter fencing and an upgraded ambulance track would be in place for the Geelong Cup on 22 October “These upgrades, with joint funding between the Coalition Government and the racing industry, will see more than $285,000 invested in the Geelong Racecourse,” he said. “The money is coming from unclaimed dividends. It’s come from racing, so let’s put it back into racing.” Club board member Jade Augustine called the upgrades “wonderful”. “The location of the owners and trainers bar is quite central, so it will look a lot better to the general public. “In the past the room was quite crowded, so now there’ll potentially be more people coming to Geelong to race.” Liberal candidate for Geelong Paula Kontelj

Quake’s ‘lucrative opportunities’
$45b bonanza ON COURSE: Geelong Racing Club chief Daniel Salter, board member Jade Augustine, South Barwon MP Andrew Katos and Liberal candidate Paula Kontelj at the racecourse. hoped the works would lift the reputation of the racecourse among visiting owners of international horses. “The Geelong Cup is the heart of the social scene in Geelong. The reputation is growing and these changes will help to bring this standard up.”
A $45 BILLION project to rebuild earthquake-ravaged Christchurch offers “lucrative opportunities” for Geelong, according to an engineers network representative. Kevin Foard said the project had numerous supplier shortages, covering everything from temporary accommodation facilities to quantity surveyors. The 15-year project would construct 800 commercial buildings, 25,000 homes and replace more than 400 kilometres of roads, he said. Mr Foard visited New Zealand with other Australian business representatives on behalf of Engineering Network Geelong (ENG), an arm of the
city’s manufacturing council. “We saw a number of potentially lucrative opportunities for Geelong businesses and had meetings with several NZ and Australian companies looking for partners to provide additional capacity or capability. “For instance, a major NZ builder needs easily erected temporary accommodation and we’re talking to an Australian company about supplying fit-out items or even a complete market-ready product. “ENG is also in discussions with a Christchurch engineering business around supplying high-end fabrications in stainless steels and alloys. A NZ regional
business is interested in talking to us about joining forces to provide products and services to the Christchurch rebuild across NZ and Australia.” Mr Foard said builders working on the project were seeking products and services that reduced labour and material requirements to “ultimately save time and money”. “We’ll be looking at these areas very closely to see what opportunities there are for our membership over the phase of the recovery project.” Magnitude 7.1 and 6.3 earthquakes struck Christchurch in late 2010 and early 2011, killing 185 people.

Builder slams red tape for 12 months of delay By PAUL MILLAR A FRUSTRATED Geelong builder says decision-makers incapable of making decisions have delayed the construction of a multi-warehouse development at Newcomb. Ashley Patten said he had been trying to cut through red-tape for 12 months to get his client’s Bellarine Hwy project on the move but had been blocked at every turn. His problems started when property owners close to the site would not allow him to create a sewer easement on their land.
The obvious alternative was to run the pipes near the nearby rail-line but that was where the project went off the rails. Mr Patten ended up dealing with VicTrack, Barwon Water and council representatives. “It just keeps going back and forth between them all. None of them seem capable of making a decision to help us move forward, council says we have to deal with Barwon Water and they say it’s a council matter.” Mr Patten said all the project needed was permission to install the piping inside the boundary of the rail line and
had no intention of disturbing tracks. Add VicTrack to the equation as the rail-line owner and Mr Patten believed the tangle of red-tape was strangling the project. “We offered to put in the latest septic system but council and Barwon Water want us to put in sewer.” Barwon Water confirmed receiving an application to service the development in June last year. “The corporation responded with an offer in the same month and has since discussed various proposals for sewerage services with the developer,” a spokesperson said.
“The developer must negotiate with adjoining landowners to gain consent for the construction of the infrastructure across their land and, if necessary, creation of an easement. “Barwon Water has been in contact with the City of Greater Geelong and VicTrack in an attempt to progress the matter.’ Mr Patten said his client was now considering taking up the issue with Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. “But then there’s a six month waiting list to get in to VCAT.”
FEARLESS: Dr Mary De Garis with a Serbian colonel on the Balkan Front in World War One.
Book reveals our fearless De Garis A Geelong woman’s remarkable journey through war in Europe to establishing Geelong’s first maternity ward is revealed in a new book. Dr Ruth Lee’s novel tells how Mary De Garis lost her husband in World War One and saved injured soldiers amid bombing on the Balkan Front before delivering thousands of Geelong babies until the age of 79. Dr Lee launched Woman War Doctor, The Life of Mary De Garis this week with the help of Deakin University Vice Chancellor Jane Den Hollander and Professor Barry Jones. Dr Lee said women entering Geelong Hospital to have babies could thank the pioneering spirit of Dr De Garis. “Dr De Garis is remarkable because her story is so unknown,” explained Dr Lee. “Her contribution to the Australian/allies war effort is not recognised in the Australian War Memorial and similarly her contribution to women’s health has gone unrecognised by historians.” Born in 1881 at Charleton, Dr De Garis graduated from University of Melbourne in 1905 with a medical degree. “Her life was extraordinary,” Dr Lee said. “She went straight to the outback to work because it was the only way she could get experience. “Dr De Garis volunteered to join the Australian army at the start of World War One but was refused, so she travelled independently to the UK to help the war effort there but also to be on hand for her fiancé should he get injured. “He survived Gallipoli but was killed on the Western Front, so Dr De Garis joined the Scottish Women’s Hospitals, (which) established 14 medical units, all staffed by women, that served in Corsica, France, Macedonia, Russia, Salonika and Serbia.” Dr De Garis served as chief medical officer of a 200-bed tent hospital in northern Macedonia during the war. “She was absolutely fearless, operating on wounded soldiers while bombs were dropping,” Dr Lee said. Dr De Garis continued her work in health after the war. “In the 1920s, when Geelong Hospital was rebuilt, Dr De Garis agitated for a maternity ward to be built,” Dr Lee said. “It took seven years of hard lobbying before the labour ward, as it was called then, was commissioned in 1931, as the administrators at the time didn’t see the need. “Middle-class women gave birth in private maternity hospitals, while poor women called the midwife.” Dr De Garis turned around Geelong’s high maternal mortality rate, delivering 1000 babies in the first seven years of the ward without losing a mother. “Her life wouldn’t have been easy but she kept on going and kept working until she was 79,” Dr Lee said. Dr De Garis was among the first wave of feminists who won recognition of women’s right to control their own bodies. “Before the law recognised equality in marriage, husbands owned their wives’ bodies and their children,” Dr Lee said. “The early feminists recognised that some women felt violated when they were being examined by medical men. The advent of women doctors improved life for women.”

SA farmer’s clue to disappearance of pilot near Otways
New claim on UFO ‘abduction’
By NOEL MURPHY
SOLVING one of the Otways’ most abiding mysteries, the disappearance of pilot Fred Valentich, could lie with a farmer who claimed to have seen a UFO around the same time - in South Australia. Mr Valentich vanished in Bass Strait in 1978 en route to King Island after reporting a long-shaped object with a green light and bright metallic sheen hovering over and orbiting his Cessna. UFO researchers have long cited unusual activity in the area, including aerial lights follow-
ing cars on King Island, a crossshaped object approaching a hunter, inexplicable lights, even a cigar-shaped object as far back as 1896. Numerous reports of UFOs were made in the three months before Mr Valentich disappeared. Earlier in the year other reports emerged from holiday-makers, fishermen, school teachers and police. Now researchers want to find a South Australian farmer who reportedly sighted a 30-metre craft over his property the day after Mr Valentich disappeared.
VANISHED: Pilot Fred Valentich. The farmer claimed he saw the Cessna stuck to the side of the craft, leaking oil, but never
told authorities because he feared being lampooned. Skywatcher Dave Reneke has reported that a chance discovery of the official file on the disappearance might have eliminated theories that Mr Valentich staged a hoax disappearance. “Adelaide researcher Keith Basterfield has been following the case since the disappearance in 1978 but had been told by the government in 2004 that the official file had been lost or destroyed,” Mr Reneke posted to his website. “He found it when searching through an online national
archives index on an unrelated topic. The file has since been digitised and uploaded on the archive’s website. “Mr Basterfield and others had known the 315-page file - the holy grail in the mystery existed. It had been seen by one researcher on the desk of a Transport Department official in 1982, as he lobbied him for its release. “What is significant about the file, Mr Basterfield argues, is that for the first time it is revealed that parts of aircraft wreckage with partial serial numbers were found
in Bass Strait five years after the disappearance. “Mr Basterfield says Valentich’s aircraft serial numbers fell within the range of those found on the wreckage, almost eliminating the theory that the pilot staged his disappearance on the way to King Island.” Researchers Bill Chalker and George Simpson, of Victorian UFO Action, want to hear from farmers not only in South Australia but also Victoria and New South Wales who might have seen a UFO in proximity to a Cessna between 21 and 24 October 1978.

Letters Cats snub walk-ups
KARDINIA Park’s stadium has a 33,500 seating capacity yet last Saturday’s Geelong-Fremantle game drew 26,855 fans. Despite this, Geelong Cats stated 900 tickets were available for the match. So why were the other 6645 tickets not made available to the general public? Clearly Geelong Football Club is not a fan of general-admission seating, or walk-up as it is traditionally known, hence reserved seating prices are hyper-inflated more than a staggering 300 per cent. While the AFL and Geelong Football Club have not provided any fan relief to patrons, fans could be excused for not attending matches at the stadium whether for economic, geographic, weather, timeslot, footy inflation, logistical, fixturing or live-television reasons. Affordable seating must be available to the lowest common denominator or, at the very least, at the stadium’s full-capacity potential. Also, for the club’s information, my Victory membership is significantly cheaper than my Cats membership. Billy Deikos Grovedale
Playing the pensioner IN RESPONSE to Gary Oraniuk (Letters, 8 August), there is an old saying: Play the ball, not the man. Debate on important public policy issues is not assisted by highly personalised attacks on those who offer a different opinion. Attempting to shoot the messenger because you do not like the message is useless and counterproductive. I repeat my assertion from the 25 July Independent that there are many dubious recipients of the very generous taxpayer funded Disability Support Pension (DSP), an assertion made on countless occasions in the past by informed people and interestingly, too, at times by some recipients of the $800-plus-a-fortnight pension themselves. This pension costs taxpayers a whopping $15 billion dollars a year. The CEO of a major Australian charity said in 2012 that between 350,000 and 400,000 disability pensioners could easily return to the workforce with the right support. I am inclined to agree. Michael J Gamble Belmont
Say no to fracking DO READERS know that many of our homes could be endangered from sitting on a rich gas field ripe for fracking, which is the extraction of gas by pumping water, sand and chemicals at huge pressure underground? Frackers drill horizontally as well as down. A moratorium on fracking in Victoria will end next year and we are unsure whether it will be extended. An exploration license has been granted for an area covering Barrabool, Wandana Heights, Waurn Ponds, parts of Grovedale, Mt Duneed, Connewarre, Torquay, Angelsea and Moriac. Locals would get none of the lucrative jobs and most gas is sold overseas. Fracking can pollute our water with chemicals, our air with toxic silica dust and our peace with truck noise and 24/7 drilling. Our properties could plummet in value or be unsaleable. Let’s follow Bacchus Marsh and New South Wales communities by telling council and State Government ‘no’. We demand stable house values, peace and clean air, water and food. On 25 August Geelong’s council will begin tak-

ing submissions on fracking for 30 days. Please email or post a few sentences saying you do not want fracking and why. Big fracking business is not interested in communities. We need to make it so difficult, they move on. Margarita Kumnick Grovedale
Peninsula police facts I WANT to dispel some myths and state some facts about what policing service changes will mean to Bellarine Peninsula communities. No police station on the peninsula will close. The Portarlington and Queenscliff stations will be open 8am to 4pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, Drysdale’s station will be open 8am to 4pm Mondays and Wednesdays and the opening hours of Bellarine Police Station, at Ocean Grove, will extend to 6am to 10pm seven days a week. It is important to note that peninsula communities will continue to have 24-hour police response provided by resources across the Geelong Police Service Area (PSA). To provide a better service police will increase the number of patrols across the whole peninsula. Intelligent, timely tasking of divisional vans along with improved supervision will ensure a consistent policing presence and a safer community where it counts - on our roads. There will be no reduction in the number of police on the Bellarine peninsula. In fact, we will receive extra staff from other areas of greater Geelong at the times when they are most needed. Policing is about flexibility and the proper deployment of resources where and when they are needed. We are keen to build a greater level of flexibility in our rostering and deployment models, so we have flexibility to deploy more police around when a high level of service demand is needed. The peninsula will have a better policing service as a result of the changes. Senior Sergeant Angelo Ferrara Bellarine Police Station officer in charge
Help fight hepatitis VIRAL hepatitis has become a silent killer. Four Victorians die every week as a consequence of viral hepatitis and over 120,000, or two per cent of Victorians, live with the condition. Liver cancer, largely caused by viral hepatitis, is the fastest growing cause of cancer death in Australia. Almost more concerning is the general lack of community awareness and understanding of the disease and the lack of resources to stem the tide of incidence, stigma and inaction. The stigma means many at-risk people are too scared to be tested and treated. Around 56,000 Victorians live with hepatitis B but less than three per cent seek treatment annually. In the case of the estimated 65,000 Victorians with hepatitis C the rate is below two per cent. Without action one in four people will die without treatment for hepatitis B and it is estimated liver cancer will increase 245 per cent in Australia by 2030 due to hepatitis C. Hepatitis Victoria asks the major parties to commit to the following as part of their state election health platforms: remove the barriers to GPs prescribing and communities dispensing treatment for hepatitis B and C; undertake a rapid testing pilot for hepatitis C; extend availability of hepatitis B vaccine to include residents born in high-prevalence countries. Successfully combatting this situation needs government, health care professionals, community members and the media to work together. Melanie Eagle Hepatitis Victoria chief executive officer

FISHNETS, feathers and sequins will decorate a Queens of the Outback show in Geelong next week. Producer, creator, choreographer and performer Simon Vowles described the drag show as “fun, fast and fabulous”. Borrowing heavily from other productions of a similar genre, Vowles version features three drag queens heading across the outback to perform at one of their daughter’s 16 birthday party. Along the way they encounter temporary imprisonments, breakdowns and love stories. Vowles said he spent nine months developing the show after gaining experience working on
What’son at
other stage productions. But the new show was his first in multiple roles. “It’s really fun,” he gushed. “I love big costumes, I love the witty humour. There’s such a fun element in this show and we’ve catered to everybody - straight people, gay people, everything in between people and to every musical genre. “It is a mash up musical and, for anyone who loves Glee or the Pitch Perfect-type movies, this caters for everybody. “It’s layered music on music and it’s all very fast. I’ve tried to cover a whole variety of music genres so that everyone can feel a part of it.” Vowles said the diverse soundtrack included mash-ups of
Dolly Patron, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Tina Turner and Australia’s Cold Chisel. Live vocals were an important aspect of the show, he said. “It turns it into a musical, not just a drag show. “It’s more dramatic performing live and more personal with the audience.” Vowles said the cast included stand-up comedian Anna Burgess, who has appeared on shows such as Rove Live, the AFI awards and Good Morning Australia. Other performers included Peter Harrington, Aaron Taylor, Leonie Lee and Justin Clausen. North Geelong’s Sphinx Hotel hosts Queens of the Outback on 22 August.

Poet his street with new play By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG poet Scott Welsh watched a man die on the floor of a public hospital. Welsh describes the man as a “casualty in war on the underclass in his latest theatrical creation, The Outcaste Weakly Poet Stage Show. With the show scheduled to debut soon in Melbourne, the former junkie and PhD candidate uses the production to reflect on his life as a street poet. He plumbs ER tragedies alongside the plights of homelessness, drug addiction, prostitution and street people. Portraying himself as a mercenary sociopath, a capitalist and a beggar poet, Welsh’s monologue show draws on tales from collaborators including an illustrator, a musician and a dancer. Welsh’s poetry sets the scene: ‘Let the dying hobo roll around on the floor, We’ll give him some morphine for his pain, that is all, And if you should hear the blood-curdling call, Assume it’s the sound of homelessness, He’s the same animal in life and death, Deserves no more or less dignity,
STREETS AHEAD: Scott Welsh has overcome addiction to bring his new play to life. Just remember to change his nappy.’ Welsh said “sometimes having been objectified by others or portrayed as a street poet bothered him. He objected to being considered a street person first and a poet second. “The truth is quite the opposite. I was a poet and a playwright long before I started writing about street life. “I’ve also written a masters thesis in philosophy but people like stories and the idea of me as street poet makes sense to a lot of people and, of course, I’ve en-
couraged it by being a street poet. Welsh’s production is modest and stark, featuring the music of Zenta Schubert, dancer Elnaz Sheshgelani and Stella Nova’s projected illustrations. “It will follow the real life path of the Outcaste Poet from Geelong to Melbourne to the streets of Sydney. “We’ll present it in Melbourne at La Mama Theatre. Then at the Imperial Hotel as part of the Sydney Fringe, in the inner west, where I lived when I was a junkie poet.

WHITE Eagle House’s new head chef and manager will be familiar faces to long-time regulars. Head chef Jodie Armstrong started her first part-time job at White Eagle House aged 14 and nine months, while manager Maria Versace previously worked at the club for eight years. Both are returning to their new positions after four year hiatus’, having been drawn back by the friendly and welcoming environment. “At White Eagle we consider everyone here family. We get on so well and we’re a team,” Maria says. Jodie’s business partner and mum, Lyn, has also returned after previously working at White Eagle House, now welcoming diners at the front-of-house with fast and friendly service. Completing the returnees is Lorne, much to the delight of patrons. Jodie is proud to be at the helm of the kitchen after working her way up through the ranks as dishwasher, waitress, kitchen hand and assistant chef. “I’ve worked for every person that’s had the lease. I remember when it was just a sports bar down the back - it’s grown a lot,” she laughs. Jodie has introduced a suggestion box to gauge customers’ feedback to help with improvements and updates to the menu.

IT’S WORTH popping in to the new and improved Manifold News and Lotto to check out what’s new. Owners Chris and Jenny have been at the helm since March and have already refreshed the shop layout, adding window displays and modernising the stock. “We have quite a few more changes in mind in the next few months,” Chris says “We will be adding more giftware lines and introducing our own unique handmade craft items, while maintaining our competitive prices.” Former cabinet-maker Chris is putting his skills to good use and already has some small furniture items on display. Manifold News and Lotto is part of the busy Shannon Plaza with a steady stream of regular customers relying on the outlet for their daily news fix or lotto ticket. “We have a brilliant range of greeting cards and a huge range of magazines, including all kinds of speciality magazines. If you can’t find it anywhere else, pop in,” Chris says. The office supplies and stationery section at Manifold News and Lotto keeps all the busy shops and small businesses in the area well supplied. “The car park here is usually full, the shops are busy, there is a new eatery opening soon, so there is a lot of stuff going on around here,” Chris smiles.

SURVIVING 30 years and longer as a travel agent, especially in this day and age, requires a special skill - and extra special service. Rashida Przastek, of Geelong West’s Dalma Travel, has it down in spades. Travel, if it is to be successful, needs specialist advice. And it needs customer feedback, too. “You have to really listen to what kind of holiday the client wants,” Rashida says. “Is it family, business, history, shopping? “You look into that and you guide them and make their holiday dream come true. “That’s why customers are satisfied and that’s why we love to hear from them when they return.” Dalma Travel’s expertise lies in its varied and many services. They do it all: competitive domestic and international airfares; cruises, special groups and package tours; travel insurance, foreign currency; visa services. Dalma Travel is a specialist in worldwide tours, it has a multicultural staff who speak other languages than English to help clients feel at home. Its consultants are well travelled, with a wealth of knowledge and experience of all continents and everything from Australia,

Professor here to help Innovative yet flexible Happy to care for kids IT’S LONG been considered embarrassing and becomes a wellkept family secret but Professor Paddy Dewan believes paediatric urinary and bladder problems should become more openly spoken about. The paediatric urologist and surgeon provides services to the Geelong region assistant families struggling to cope, often psychologically, with what is sometimes a major problem but a simple medical issue. “Many of the concerns are not well understood because it is kept quiet but some conditions are quite common,” Prof Dewan says. “We can assist with urinary tract infections, kidney abnormalities, day or night wetting or concerns about testicular posi-

One World’s early childhood program provides quality experiences for all children, while a family grouping facility, prekinder and a funded four-year-old kindergarten program are also available. HAPPY Feet Early Learning Centre offers a government-funded four-year old kinder program teaching essential requirements for school. The program runs 8:30am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday. Children learn in a safe, welcoming environment at Happy Feet. The welcoming, exciting and fun program makes children feel secure, nurtured, happy, comfortable and confident. IndySport ‘Great’ Judd on Scott’s bite get fresh mind for Blues match Anglers with lake fishing On the Chris Pitman
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
A CARLTON midfield containing “genuine great of our era” Chris Judd occupied Geelong coach Chris Scott’s mind this week. “The Blues midfield is in exceptional form, their key forwards have been in strong form, Jarrad Waite has certainly found something,” Scott observed at this week’s media conference. “When you combine really good midfield depth and quality ball use inside 50 to strong marking forwards, that’s a pretty good combination. “They’re using the ball well. They’ve been hanging on to it and delivering it to their forwards well. “The pressure around the contest and our ability to force them to kick the ball to the favour of our defenders if possible is pretty important to our game. “Chris Judd is one of the genuine greats of our era, so we wish him well post this weekend. But its good for footy that champions keep playing. “Our midfield against theirs is going to have a big say in the game and when you come up against quality midfielders it’s always a bit harder.” But Scott again backed his midfielders – Joel Selwood, Steve Johnson, Mitch Duncan, Allan Christensen and Matthew Stokes – against any other AFL combination. “Our plan will be mainly based around our game. We think our plan is relatively robust against any game style but we’d need to be particularly aware of the quality they have through the midfield.” Of greater concern was the final quarter comeback that finished with Fremantle almost pinching the game last weekend. “The players knew on the night the sort of stuff we were talking about. It just shows what a fine line it is in a pressure game. “It’s one thing to know, it’s another thing to execute those plans under pressure, when the scoreboard is close and the opposition is high quality. “It’s important that we reinforce those things in theory but it’s much more important that we practice it and work on executing it against a team that’s in really good form in Carlton on Friday night.” Scott said the side was not completely settled even though it was round 21. Dawson Simpson had been sidelined with a “minor and temporary
FORWARD PRESSURE: Tom Hawkins finds himself under close attention from Docker Zac Dawson at Simonds Stadium last Saturday night. Picutre: REG RYAN back issue”, Taylor Hunt was still struggling with groin soreness and the race to find the best forward foil for Tom Hawkins was still open. Scott said he was “not closed off” to any rucking options, although he
conceded that Hamish McIntosh was “up and going” and had improved the team. Scott also gave Shane Kersten a vote of confidence, despite his deference to Hawkins in games.
“We think Shane has the potential to be an outstanding player and we want the ball kicked to him.” But Scott kept up the pressure, picking Josh Walker and Mitch Brown as part of any finals squad.
Avondale looms in Warriors’ toughest challenge yet By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong faces its toughest assignment yet on Saturday when it visits runaway National Premier League 1 leader Avondale Heights. Avondale went back to its winning ways last week with a 1-0 win against Richmond courtesy of an Oleksiy Khrapko goal. The win left Avondale 11 points clear on top of the competition. North Geelong will enter the contest after a 2-1 win against Sunshine. The match opened lackadaisically, with little fluidity or purpose as both sides made turnovers at crucial stages. North Geelong took the lead in the 28th minute after Robbie Zadworny whipped in a corner, which Michael Grgic headed home. At the break Micky Colina introduced Michael Anderson in place of Nikola Jurkovic as he sought to inject additional pace to attack a deep-lying Sunshine defence.
WINNING FEELING: Warriors players celebrate a goal on the weekend. Five minutes later North Geelong capitalised on a turnover, going 2-0 up when Mark Paleka rocketed a long-range effort into the top right corner. The Warriors then settled as Vito Cichello dis-
tributed the ball to his forwards with timing and placement. However, the forwards seemed lacking in urgency, wasting several opportunities. On 60 minutes Sunshine brought on forward Boz Lojanica who nearly had the goal his team needed five minutes later when he drove a shot past Daniel Zilic to hit the side netting. Another five minutes of sustained Sunshine pressure was rewarded when a free kick wide of the penalty area was whipped into the box for Tom Reilly to head hard past Zilic. The ensuing 20 minutes were end-to-end as both teams went for another goal. North Geelong was again too casual in front of goal, giving defenders enough time to close them down, while Sunshine was too desperate and rushed its chances. Colina expressed discontent after the match. “We did just enough to get over the line. Credit to George Cross, they battled hard but we need to seriously pick our game up.”
MANY local anglers flocked to freshwater lakes in search of trout over the past week. Lake Wendouree, situated in the middle of Ballarat, remained one of the hot spots, as Paul Kwiecinski and Michael Cocomanovski can certainly attest. The pair began fishing from the banks of Wendouree early Saturday morning and did not have to wait long for some action. Casting Bob ‘N’ Spoons in the Glow colour, they landed two exceptionally well-conditioned brown trout of 1.8kg and 2.7kg. Just down the road at Lake Bostock anglers experienced some outstanding fishing on Chinook salmon, brown and rainbow trout and even the odd redfin. Anglers walking the shoreline while casting soft plastics such as Berkley T-tail minnows in black and gold caught all four species, including salmon averaging 800g to 1kg and rainbows of similar size. Casting Tassie Devils resulted in catches of brown trout, some nudging 2.5kg. Steve Prior visited Bostock on Sunday, landing a healthy brown trout of just over 1kg amid rain and hail. Bostock has also been productive on bait, with Powerbait or worms presented on a running sinker rig taking all four species. Lake Bullen Merri, near Camperdown, continued fishing well for Chinook salmon. Many were larger than the Bostock specimens, some Chinooks SHORE THING: Paul Kwiecinski with Lake pushing 2kg. Wendouree trout. Anglers trolling deeper-diving lures such as Daiwa Double Clutches achieved good numbers of fish. Next door, Lake Purrumbete produced brown trout to 2kg on Tassie Devils trolled along the east bank at first light. As the day progressed anglers casting lures along the weed banks caught trout to 1.5kg. Further afield, Lake Eildon has been fishing well for trout. Mark Roberts fished Eildon last Friday afternoon, catching a chunky brown of 1.5kg while casting a Vibrax spinner. Other anglers had success trolling the lake’s Big River arm. On the saltwater front, Australian salmon were taken in good numbers from local surf beaches. Staff member Michael Moore fished Saturday evening off Collendina where he beached salmon to 1kg. Other beaches to produce fish were Jan Juc and Bancoora. Casting 25gram lures such as Sluks or Gillies baitfish worked well. Andrew Orchard set out in search of bream and estuary perch along the Surf Coast with some good results. His best result was a trophy-size estuary perch of 58cm, which engulfed his lure. An estuary perch that size is an incredible fish, the likes of which Andrew thinks he’ll be unlikely to encounter again any time soon. Whiting and squid continued to be caught just out from the St Leonards boat ramp. The start of the run-out tide produced the better fish. Queenscliff Harbour fished well for silver trevally on Z-Man 2.5-inch Grub Zs during the tide changes. Anglers fishing during the higher tide amid stronger tidal flows found the trevally among the moored boats. The harbour entrance also produced Australian salmon. Southern bluefin tuna continued biting at Port Fairy. Many were taken in 40m or less, depending on the weather. Trolling skirted lures in the smaller sizes or casting at schools of fish on the surface with metal slugs have been the most productive techniques. Anyone seeking options over the next week should consider trying Lake Bostock, which is only a 55-minute drive from Geelong and has large amounts of banks access. With the variety of fish on offer, it’s well-worth a look.

WHETHER it’s for business or pleasure, Truck Car Rentals has transport requirements covered. Truck Car Rentals has an extensive range of vehicles to suit a variety of requirements, owner Graeme says. “Being a small local operation, our prices are more competitive than bigger companies. “Plus, we can offer a high level of customer service because we know the local needs.” Truck Car Rentals recently expanded its fleet to include 46 seater buses, adding to its 12 and 22 seaters. “A lot of schools around Geelong use our services when they need extra buses,” Graeme says. “We have a lot of local clubs and groups hire the smaller buses as well as families for get-togethers or outings.” Truck Car Rentals has several enclosed trucks suitable for do-it-yourself removals, requiring only a car licence. A range of light commercials and vans, tray trucks, cars and single-axle trailers for the weekend handyman are also available. “Our rates are lower during the week so that adds flexibility to small business vehicle requirements,” Graeme says. Truck Car Rentals also has everything up to prime movers and trailers, great for logistics businesses trying to cope with extra demand. “If your vehicle is in for a service or repairs, Truck Car Rentals has the answer. “Whatever your needs, we can assist in finding the right vehicle for the job.” Truck Car Rentals is at 215 Station St, Corio, phone 5275 8288 or visit truckcarrentals.com.au.

PEOPLE with disabilities will have “virtual ownership” of greyhounds during a fundraising race night in Geelong on Monday. Greyhound Racing Victoria’s (GRV) annual TAB Great Chase series randomly assigns dogs to about 2000 clients and carers from Victorian organisations that care for the intellectually or physically disabled. The clients and carers visit local greyhound racetracks to cheer on their dogs at the beginning of the series. A GRV spokesperson said the participants also received free merchandise, a complementary meal and could even give their greyhound a cuddle after it races. “Further, should their greyhound happen to win, the organisation will share in more than $50,000 in prize money and continue to follow their grey-
