Local CFA waited out the blaze at the Menzies Creek house fire.

Shocked by blaze from wood heater By ANEEKA SIMONIS A WOODFIRE heating unit is to blame for a blaze at a Menzies Creek home on Thursday afternoon. Owners of the Cardinia Court home, Craig and Robyn Dean arrived late to the scene, held up by traffic jams caused by a truck that rolled on Burwood Highway in Ferntree Gully earlier that day. “We are a little bit shocked, disappointed, anxious ... it’s not an old house, Mr Dean said. “It’s only 10 years old. CFA crews from Menzies Creek, Selby, Kal-
lista and Clematis attended the blaze which struck around 4.20pm, along with three other support vehicles including a breathing apparatus van from Bayswater. Kallista-The Patch’s CFA captain Peter Toender said they received the call around 4.45pm to attend the scene. “It took about half an hour to knock the fire down and another hour-and-a-half to really get rid of all the flames, Capt Toender said. Capt Toender said three-quarters of the internal roof structure was damaged in the blaze while the
living room which contained the heating unit had completely burnt down. “The house is not a write off, it just needs a new roof and ceiling, he said. Mr Dean said despite the damage, he was relieved that the fire was contained and did not spread through the rest of their home. “I am relieved that it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. When you hear of houses being burnt, they are burnt to the ground. “No one is hurt, that’s the main thing, he said.

SPECTATORS will no longer need to brave rain, hail and snow at Olinda’s Recreation Reserve. A brand new, state-of-the-art pavilion was officially opened on Wednesday with much fanfare. The building, costing $1.8 million, was funded in partnership with the Yarra Ranges Council, State Government, Federal Government, Dandenong Ranges Community Bank and Hilltop Association. Hilltop Association president Steve Scott said he was proud to look around at the building and know that all the hard work of many in the community had paid off. “There are so many people to thank, he said. “We’ve had a number of people working on this over the years, some that have stayed on the committee for the whole time, some that have come and gone. But everyone’s work has paid off. He said the new building meant that the community now had a place to hold events, as well as provide separate change rooms for both male and female competitors. Almost every man and his dog were there as councillors and politicians alike came together to celebrate their joint efforts. Federal MP Jason Wood told stories of how he and his team mates played in heavy rain and snow at the ground in his junior football days. He even reminisced about a 32-goal loss at the ground. Eastern Region MP Edward O’Donohue congratulated the committee members for their tireless efforts. Yarra Ranges Councillor Jason Callanan said the project was a great example of the community, council and government working together to create a great versatile place. The new clubrooms will be used by clubs including Olinda Ferny Creek Football Netball Club, Olinda Ferny Creek Junior Football Club, Olinda Cricket Club, Sassafras Ferny Creek Netball Club and Kalorama Mt Dandenong Tennis Club.

STUDENTS from Upwey Primary School took a walk down memory lane yesterday as part of the school’s 80th anniversary celebration. Dressed in old-time clothes, the students simulated activities and learning methods dating back to when the school first opened in the ’30s including horseshoe tossing, hopscotch, making damper and writing on a blackboard. Upwey Primary School’s principal said the experience helped show students the improvement in technology over the past few decades and how it assisted in learning. “It was very interesting for them to go back to those times ... using a chalk on blackboard instead of lined paper or a laptop computer. “It helped show the developments in technology and education over the years,” he said. As part of the anniversary celebration, each grade also investigated different world events and educational changes over the past eight decades. They each put together a timeline which will make up the school’s 80th anniversary mural, displayed opposite the hall later this year.

Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeaters volunteer Bruce at Yellingbo Conservation Reserve. 125737 Picture: S. TARDIF ment and Primary Industries alongside all the other groups involved do here,” she said. Ms Tardif said there were less than 100 helmeted honeyeaters left in the wild and to support their breeding a supplementary feeding program had been established at the Yellingbo Conservation Reserve. “Here at the reserve not all of the habitat is good enough to support the population of birds, so what the supplementary feeding program does is (it) ensures that the population of birds can be as healthy as possible and increase breeding success,” she said.
“Last year was one of the biggest breeding years since it started being monitored with numbers increasing substantially.” The ‘what goes on beyond the locked reserve gate?’ workshop is on Wednesday 20 August at 1217 Macclesfield Road, Yellingbo, from 10am to 3pm and includes dedicated planting time for the helmeted honeyeaters habitat. THERE are around 100 left in the wild, and Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeaters is opening the gates to share their work with locals. Yellingbo Conservation Reserve is home to the only wild population of the helmeted honeyeaters worldwide and is usually not open to the public. The Helmeted Honeyeater Recovery Program, Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater, Zoos Victoria and BirdLife Australia’s Threatened Bird Network are holding a workshop next month where locals can learn more about the critically endangered helmeted honeyeater and the conservation reserve. Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeaters volunteer and member of the recovery team Sue Tardif said there were a lot of agencies and local volunteers involved in trying to keep this area as pristine as possible to ensure the survival of the special bird. “This workshop is a chance for locals and others interested the opportunity to come, ask questions and learn about what the Department of Environ-

Council firm on station petition By MELISSA MEEHAN COMMUNITY groups hoping to call the former Emerald police station home called on the Cardinia Shire CEO to stand in and defer a decision on the purchase of the site set for last night (Monday). But because it was listed as a petition, a spokesperson for the council said the motion would go ahead. Dale Blair from radio station 3MDR and spokesperson for the groups wanting to use the building wrote to CEO Garry McQuillan over the weekend after finding that a motion to discuss the purchase would be raised on Monday night. “I am writing to you to request that you strike the recommendation for council not to purchase the old Emerald police station from the agenda for the council’s
18 August meeting,” Mr Blair said. “Given council has commissioned a consultancy firm to report on future arts and facilities needs throughout the shire and given that the report is pending, it seems illogical to try to push through a vote on the matter without consideration of the consultant’s recommendations.” Mr Blair also said that the council had not undertaken any consultation with community groups to assess their needs as was requested by the motion put forward by Cr Owen at the April meeting. “The community has been assured that ‘public advocacy’ would be a key aspect of any decision made in regard to the old Emerald police station and that a ‘proper process’ would be adhered to,” he said.
“I daresay the community would be outraged if a decision not to purchase was made without waiting for the consultant’s report and would undoubtedly consider ratepayers’ money wasted if the report is ignored.” A spokesperson for Cardinia Shire Council said that because the issue had been raised as a petition at the meeting, there was a certain process that had to be met, and would be raised as per the agenda. It is expected that councillors will vote on whether to purchase the site, with council officers recommending that they vote against the purchase, citing that the building was not big enough to hold all groups and would only meet the needs of the radio station. See online for the outcome http://rangestrader.starcommunity.com.au/.
Sewerage in long, long pipeline By MELISSA MEEHAN SELBY residents were given the opportunity to have their say about sewer options in their area. Yarra Valley Water general manager for sustainable development, Sam Austin said that 160 customers in Selby were connected to septic tanks and were scheduled to be
provided with a sewerage service in 2028/2029. “While work is being undertaken by South East Water in neighbouring areas, it was an opportune time to hear people’s views on the sewerage options,” Mr Austin said. “The survey results give a snapshot of what people think and will feed into our next scheduling as-
sessment for the backlog program in 2016.” The results from the survery were close, with 56 per cent of people thinking that septics were an environmental and or health risk to Selby and just 51 per cent of people supporting the provision of a reticulated sewerage service to property in place of a septic tank.
Boy stable after match collapse A NINE-YEAR-OLD Wesburn Junior Football Club player was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital by air ambulance after collapsing following the under-nine game at Monbulk on Sunday. An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said medics were called to the ground about 9.45am. The Wesburn and Monbulk boys had lined up to shake hands after the under-nines game when Lockie Yates collapsed. The scheduled under 10 and under 11 games were cancelled as paramedics cared for the boy on the ground while they waited for the air ambulance. The spokesperson said they had no information about why the boy collapsed but that he was in a serious condition when he was flown out. The boy’s mother Jayne Yates thanked people for their support on Facebook yesterday (Monday) saying her son had been stable through the night. Wesburn Junior Football Club president Chris Read said the club would not comment but said the thoughts of everyone at the club were with the boy and his family. Mr Read said as a matter of course the club had been requested to submit a report to the Dandenong Ranges Junior Football League. - KATH GANNAWAY

AN OLINDA fruit shop has moved and, under council rule, decreased the size of a sign that was allegedly blocking the vision of drivers. Pellegrino’s Fresh Fruits was approached by the Yarra Ranges Council about the sign displayed on Mount Dandenong Tourist Road following a complaint made earlier this month. Driving past the sign, the complainant said he nearly had an accident as “the local vegetable seller places the sign (in a place that) hides any car venturing down the hill past the shopping strip. By the time you see the car, it’s too late.” Andrew Paxton, director of Planning, Building and Health said a council ranger attended on the day of the complaint and later assured that “the sign was moved and has now been reduced in size, moved to a more acceptable place and a permit has been granted.” Defending the sign, fruit shop owner Paul Pellegrino said he had placed it in the same spot for over
three years and had “never received a complaint”. Despite this, he was quick to address the concern by making the necessary changes to the sign and updating the shop’s land permit. Paul said the update had cost him around $1200 which, he said, was “a lot of money for a small business.” Awaiting the council to approve their insurance renewal, second generation owner Tony Pellegrino said they were without a sign for the next couple of weeks. Located down a gravel road off the main strip, he said business was and would continue to be affected until they were able to display their sign again. “Without the sign, it’s been hard to get customers down here,” Tony said. Pellegrino’s Fresh Fruits was established in Belgrave in 1960, passed down three generations of Pellegrinos. It moved to Olinda around 10 years ago.

By REBECCA BILLS STEELS Creek artists Malcolm Calder and Jenny Tetlow have both been acknowledged for their artistic ability. Mr Calder has taken out the top prize with best botanical art piece at the Sherbrooke Art Gallery’s annual Wild Art Show and Ms Tetlow walked away with the encouragement award at the Mont De Lancey Art Show. Ms Tetlow said although it was strange to receive an encouragement award the age of 82, she is very proud of her achievement. “Malcolm and I have painted together for quite a number of years - we used to go into the city once a week for a botanical illustration classes,” she said. “I used to teach physical education and when I retired I decided I wanted to do something more solitary so I took up

“We all just enjoy it as a hobby and that’s the main motivation for doing these things. “But we have both entered a number of art shows over the years in different capacities and it’s nice to be recognised.”

Upgrade gets Labor’s vote MONBULK College is set for a $3 million facelift if Labor wins the next election. Victorian Labor has committed the money towards the refurbishment and replacement of classrooms to create 21st century spaces at the college. Leader of the Opposition Daniel Andrews joined Monbulk MP James Merlino at the school to deliver the news to parents and teachers last week. Mr Andrews said students can’t get a firstrate education in a second-rate classroom. “These old classrooms have got to go,” he said. Mr Merlino said Monbulk College is a great school that’s under a lot of pressure and that he hoped the upgrades would allow the school to improve its education.

Japan eye-opener By REBECCA BILLS
From China to Selby By ANEEKA SIMONIS SELBY Primary School welcomed students from a Chinese sister state for a second annual visit last week. From Jiangsu Province, a city of Suzhou, nine students, a teacher and educational representative were welcomed by happy, buzzing faces as they arrived on Thursday 24 July. The students will spend two weeks in Australia, half spent experiencing life and learning at one of Victoria’s 15 sister schools, including Selby and Cockatoo primary schools. During their stay they will also experience Australian home life by staying with families from the school. Selby Primary School principal Justin Butler said the international program helped teach both cohorts cultural tolerance and understanding. “Our students learnt the basics around Chinese culture and that despite their differences, at the end of the day they are all human with a lot in common,” he said. Minister for Education Martin Dixon
Emma McLean, 11, with her host sisters Akari, 10, and Hikaru, 5. 125690
“They have very small houses compared to Australian houses and they were extremely sweet and kind,” Emma said. “I did get overwhelmed at school every day just because I didn’t always know what was going on due to the language barrier but they made me feel very welcome and told me they would never forget me when I left. “It was very special.” Before the trip, Upper Ferntree Gully Principal Peta Evans said Emma had shown great maturity and determination and that she really admired her confidence. “This trip really puts the stu-
dents’ learning into focus and they can see and make connections of things they have learnt in class. Emma’s mother Bec McLean said it was a big relief to have her little girl home safe and sound. “We are extremely proud of her and we know that this experience that she has just had is something we just could not have given her,” she said. “To know that she has been to a country on her own at 11 and been able to experience all that she has is really wonderful. “It really is worth taking that leap of faith as a parent and letting them go.”
said the program helped students think globally by creating international networks for the future. “Both Chinese and Victorian students are deepening their understanding of each other’s language and culture while developing lasting networks and friendships through this experience,” he said. The State Government wants to continue building Australia’s relationship with China. It has announced it will invest $13 million into the program which will send 1500 Year 9 students to China over the next five years. Mr Butler is excited about the new state grant and is pushing to get his students to China next year. The school put on a welcome assembly for its visitors the day after they arrived, which included an authentic Australian performance, gift exchange and sausage sizzle lunch. Australia marked 35 years since it began its relationship with the sister state last week with a welcome ceremony at Government House with Mr Dixon and Governor of Victoria Alex Chernov.
Growing plans for gardens A STRONG vision and direction for managing gardens in the Dandenong Ranges has been released. Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment and Gembrook MP Brad Battin has released the new Dandenong Ranges Gardens Strategic Management Plan with Parks Victoria staff, members of the Dandenong Ranges Advisory Committee and volunteers at the National Rhododendron Gardens in Olinda. Mr Battin said the plan provided direction for managing the gardens for the next 15 years. “The detailed strategies outlined in this plan aim to help protect, promote and enhance the Dandenong Ranges’ gardens,” Mr Battin said. “The plan highlights the gardens’ botanical significance and their important role in preserving and conserving
species including those that are rare, exotic and endangered. A key strategy in the plan supports a new name for the National Rhododendron Gardens to reflect its status as a botanic garden. “Visitation to the gardens has increased by 400 per cent since 2010. This also highlights their importance of regional tourism and a place where locals and visitors can enjoy a diverse range of landscapes, plants and outdoor spaces,” Mr Battin said. The management plan covers the National Rhododendron Gardens, the William Ricketts Sanctuary, the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden, the George Tindale Memorial Garden and the Pirianda Garden. For a copy of the management plan, contact Parks Victoria Information Centre on 13 19 63 or download it from www.parks. vic.gov.au.

RETURNING home to Australia, 11-year-old global leader Emma McLean says she can’t wait to return to Japan. The Upper Ferntree Gully Primary School student was one of six students selected across the country to represent Australia at the Asian Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC) in Fukuoka, Japan. Emma said her experience connecting with students from around the world was something she would never forget. “Even though it was called a convention, it felt like a really cool school camp,” she said. “When I was over there I found that all of us Aussies became really close with other students from the Cook Islands, as well as two Chinese girls. “We made them all try Vegemite and the faces they all pulled were just priceless.” The APCC is a civic movement which is funded by local governments as well as supported by donations from corporate sponsors and the APCC Supporters’ Association. The aim of the APCC is to foster global citizens who are able to think of the world beyond national boundaries and desire world peace and co-existence. The three-day convention allows students from 59 countries to come together. Emma says she now has the opportunity to return to the convention when she is 16 as a peace ambassador and is really keen to mentor students like herself in the future. After the convention, Emma spent the rest of her time in Japan going to school and living with a host family in Fukuoka.

100% of your fire levy goes to our fire services Last year, the Victorian Government replaced the Fire Services Levy with a fairer system, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission. Now every property owner contributes a fair share to Victoria’s fire services, not just those with adequate insurance. Eligible pensioners and veterans also receive a $50 concession. 100 per cent of the fire levy goes to support greater funding of the operations of the Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade. This includes firefighters, staff and volunteers, training, community education, protective clothing, vital lifesaving equipment and more than 1,200 fire stations and 2,300 trucks. Each year, Victoria’s firefighters attend more than 78,000 incidents, including road accidents and rescues, bush and grass fires, fires in the home, and workplace incidents. It’s a fairer fire levy.

Show takes to stage By REBECCA BILLS THIRTY-EIGHT grade six students at Belgrave South Primary School will be hitting the stage to perform Man of Steel. In the annual grade six production, grade six teacher Julie Price said it’s an absolute tradition at the school and it is a great way to celebrate the primary school experience before the students head off to high school. “This is their way to show off seven years of growth at the school,” she said. “The grade six production is something that is really special to our school. “Our musical director Stuart Semmens had been involved in it for 31 years now but it was running long before that.” Ms Price said this year the students have had the luxury of a live band to rehearse and perform with. “For some of the students, this will be the only time they get to perform in a theatre with a live band,” she said. “All the students have shown a lot of persistence and can’t wait to take to the stage later this month. The students have all really got into character and it’s great to see some of the students that are usually quite shy come out of their skin and really embrace their character.” Belgrave South Primary School’s 2014 school production Man of Steel is on Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 August at 7.30pm at Burrinja Theatre, 351 Glenfern Road, Upwey. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 children and concession card holders and can be purchased online at burrinja. org.au or in person at the Burrinja box office.

Life tales from the trenches By ANEEKA SIMONIS MELBOURNE Museum will commemorate 100 years since the outbreak of World War I with a powerful and poignant exhibition that shares the devastating, real-life stories of people affected by the conflict. World War I: Love and Sorrow uses more than 300 artefacts to illustrate the lives of eight individuals, including a Victorian mother awaiting the return of her son, Indigenous brothers from Orbost fighting on the Western Front and a Jewish German soldier on the other side of that same front. The exhibition opens on 30 August and exhibition curator Deborah ToutSmith said the aim was to get people to understand and remember individual stories from the war. “When we talk about war we often talk about the battles and the dates. “With this exhibition we wanted to
bring the people back into the picture,” she said. The exhibition uses award-winning technology to help retell the real-life stories. Visitors move through the space as audio and visual messages appear at trigger points revealing more and more about their war-torn lives. “Each story is deeply personal and emotional, giving audiences a sometimes painful and heart-rending experience of the true destruction and desolation of World War I. “No one ever went to the trenches and came back unaffected,” Ms ToutSmith said. It will also feature an interactive projection of Glencourse Wood, a battleground in Ypres, Belgium, where many Australians lost their lives. “It’s important that hundreds of years later, we take the time to tell a more honest story about what war does to people.” Ms Tout-Smith said.
The items on display have been drawn from family members of servicemen and women as well as from museums across the world over the past four years. Rekindling memories of love and sadness, the items include a bed that was used to wheel injured veterans around for 40 years to a baby bootie which was sent to a new father on the front line only to be returned with a telegram notifying his death. WWI was the most costly war to date with more than 450,000 Australians enlisted to serve. More than 61,000 of those people died while many returned with physical or mental injuries that lasted for the rest of their lives. The World War I: Love and Sorrow exhibition is expected to run for the full centenary period and is free with museum admission. Contact Melbourne Museum on 131 102 for details.
Treasure trail of talent By REBECCA BILLS BELGRAVE will be on a treasure hunt like no other - searching for art and talent at hillsceneLIVE #2. The inaugural event in June received overwhelming support which inspired the hillsceneLIVE #2 which is set to be bigger and bolder than the first. Project officer Gareth Hart said he was amazed by the community support. He said the event was an opportunity for artists to connect and perform in a supportive space during the first event. “Artists, in particular, like being able to have free rein to follow an experimental vision which this really does provide,” he said. “This is a space for artists to network and build a connection with the local community.” HillsceneLIVE is a curated minifestival of performance and live art that seeks to engage and excite the hills community. The mini-festival will take over the Belgrave township with performances taking place in a range of reinvigorated and re-imagined spaces including empty shop fronts, kooky corners, underground lairs, public thoroughfares and cafes. “This really will be like a treasure hunt of art and performance for audiences that attend,” Mr Hart said.
“The last event was all held at Burrinja but from the audience and performer feedback we saw there was a huge want of non-theatre spaces to be utilised for a completely difference audience experience.” This event presents artists from diverse practices performing work that is bold, striking, risky or experimental. Belgrave local and dancer Libby Maitland will be performing a 90-minute movement-theatre dance routine on the phenomenon that is ‘odd socks’. “It’s something that we all experience in our lives and I’ve developed a bit of a narrative around the concept,” she said. “I will be improvising and encouraging audience participation. “I find a freedom in using movement-theatre and interpretive dance, which is really exciting. “When it all happens in the moment, the performance is quite electric.” Armed with a map of Belgrave, audiences will meet at Belgrave station and are then asked to seek out, explore, and find a number of secret locations in the township in this free event. HillsceneLIVE #2 is on 5 September from 6pm to 10.30pm. For more information, visit www.hillscene.com.au.
Gunning for followers HE GREW up in the hills of Pennsylvania before a life of violence and crime took hold but now he is now known as the Machine Gun Preacher. Sam Childers in his early teens was a shotgunner, an armed guard for drug dealers, and during this time met a stripper named Lynn who later became his wife. It was during those years as a shotgunner that Sam said he became increasingly concerned about his safety and feared he would be killed and slowly began to distance himself from that life. Sam said in 1998 he visited the village of Yei in Southern Sudan in the midst of the Second Sudanese War where he joined a mission group to help repair damaged huts in the village. He said it was here that he was inspired to build an orphanage for children in the town.
Once the orphanage was established, Sam led armed missions to rescue children from the Lord’s Resistance Army - a brutal rebel militia that had kidnapped 30,000 children and murdered hundreds of thousands of villagers. Sam currently holds the Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for social justice and his story has been made into the Hollywood movie Machine Gun Preacher. The movie Machine Gun Preacher will be shown on Saturday 6 September at 1 Church Street, Emerald, at a special community breakfast. Sam will be there in person to talk about his experiences. The breakfast starts at 6.45am and cost is $7.50. To book or for more information call 5968 4046 or email info@ stmarksemerald.org.au.

The team for any hard cuts the Yarra Ranges. He has even worked with the head arborist at the Healesville Sanctuary and for many other well-known companies. But it was time for Matt to go out on his own, and for nine years he has worked hard at providing a reliable local business to residents. The team at Cut and Catch has spent many nights out in the storms, helping local families clean up after wild winds - some days spending 20 hours a day on the job. “We have 24-hour emergency call-out services and can help with any types of tree removal,” Matt said. “This includes pruning and bracing, mulching and stump grinding.” Cut and Catch is a small local company with friendly staff, a qualified arborist and is OHS compliant. Presented by branch manager Charmaine Jeffery at a school assembly on Friday 8 August, students Ashlyn and Krystal were given a Bendigo Bank account with $25 to start them on their savings journey. As part of their economics unit, the primary school students learnt about saving, interest rates and how to run a business by managing their own market stalls at the school. The savings competition required students to draw and write about something they would like to save for. Most students showed interest in purchasing electronic equipment such as an iPad. A GRASSROOTS anti-poverty group in the hills is calling on the government to increase funding for a global institution fighting against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. RESULTS International Australia Melbourne Hills Group wants a further $125 million to be donated to The Global Fund which helps provide disease fighting treatment to poor countries around the world. Timed to coincide with the 2014 International HIV AIDS Conference in Melbourne, the group met for its national conference last month and appealed to local
members of parliament. HIV survivor and advocate Carol Nyirenda from Zambia attended the conference in the hope that her 14-year struggle may inspire Australians to continue campaigning the government for increased support. Belgrave resident and leader of RESULTS in the Hills Emmanuelle EmileBlake said it was an honour to meet the dedicated health advocate. “Carol’s story of living positively with HIV is truly inspirational.” The Global Fund has delivered lifesaving antiretroviral treatment to an estimated
six million people. However, only a third of the people living with HIV AIDS have access to the treatment and most AIDS patients live in developing countries. Ms Emile-Blake said that access needed to be extended to countries that were in desperate need. “Extra funding will give more of the world’s poorest access to lifesaving treatment that they are currently being denied,” she said. For more information about RESULTS International Australia, Melbourne Hills Group contact Emmanuelle at resultsmelbournehills@ gmail.com.
State grants for animal welfare
1149893-EG33-14
ANIMAL welfare organisations are being encouraged to apply for a new state grant. The Coalition has injected $1.6 million into the Animal Welfare Fund which supports not-for-profit organisations helping abused, neglected and homeless animals. Member for Evelyn Christine Fyffe said local shelters or care groups should apply for the grant which could amount to anywhere between $10,000 and $50,000. “The Animal Welfare Fund is open to animal shelters,
organisations promoting responsible animal ownership education, community foster care networks, and groups that provide relief facilities and services during an emergency. “These organisations often rely heavily on donations and volunteers, so these grants from the Napthine Government could go a long way to assisting them in their important work.” Grant applications close at 4pm on 22 August. For information or to apply, visit http:// www.depi.vic.gov.au/animalwelfaregrants.

Woori’s winning ways YVMDFNL DIVISION 1 SENIORS Woori Yallock 15.16 (106) d Belgrave 10.5 (55) WOORI Yallock looked to have a battle on their hands at quarter time as they trailed by eight points, however they really upped the work rate in the second term, scoring 5.6- to-1.2 to turn the quarter-time deficit into a handy 20-point, half-time lead. The second half saw Woori slowly stretch their lead as they had all the answers to Belgrave’s challenges, eventually winning by a comfortable 46 points. They now sit second on the ladder with only percentage separating them from fifth and just one game to go before finals. Woori play fifth-placed Mount Evelyn next week in what should be a great climax to the home-and-away season. Woori Yallock best players: B. Monkhorst (4 goals), M. Witkowski, D. Ryan (1 goal). Belgrave best players: M. Collins (6 goals), B. Collins, S. Nicholson. Mount Evelyn 10.13 (73) d Olinda Ferny Creek 9.6 (60) MOUNT Evelyn now sit fifth on the ladder after a gritty 13-point win against Olinda who are now in sixth spot and will have to beat Upwey next week if they are to take part in this year’s finals series. This game went goal-for-goal in the first half with Mount Evelyn holding a two-point lead at the first change and just a threepoint lead at half time. The third quarter was a hard grind for Olinda as they couldn’t score a goal as Mount Evelyn’s defence was outstanding, they may have only scored two goals for the quarter, but it was enough to gain them a handy 16-point, three-quarter time lead. The last quarter was a great battle and Olinda did challenge but it wasn’t to be enough as Mount Evelyn had the answer and were able to hold on to win by a tough13 points. Mount Evelyn best players: C. Urquhart, S. Tesoriero, M. Martin (2 goals). Olinda Ferny Creek best players: O. Millwood (1 goal), D. Wilson (2 goals), M. Wright. Wandin 22.19 (151) d Warburton Millgrove 12.8 (80) WANDIN continues to dominate the competition, this time with a 71-point thumping of Warburton Millgrove. This game started off even enough with scores all tied up at the first change, but Wandin started to hit their straps in the second term, booting 6.9 goals-to-3 goals and really should have been further in front than the 27-point half time margin. The second half saw Wandin really pull away as their running power was too strong for Warby to counter, booting 12 second-half goals to five to win quite easily and are looking set for a successful finals campaign. Wandin best players: R. Ross (1 goal), M. Fowkes (6 goals), J. Myers. Warburton Millgrove best players: T. McKail (1 goal), M. Wappett (5 goals), B. Winzer. Upwey Tecoma 14.11(95) d Monbulk 13.12 (90) THIS was a great game between two sides vying for a top-three spot and yet still not consolidated in the top five. There was nothing in this contest from start to finish, Monbulk wasted their chances early, booting 3.8 in the first quarter while Upwey took theirs, booting five straight. The second quarter was an arm wrestle, plenty of goals scored with Monbulk booting six to
Andrew Egginton holding the ball high. Upwey’s five and at the long break, it was Monbulk by just one point. Goals dried up in the second half with both teams tiring and going in hard, by three-quarter time Upwey had nudged their way in front by just four points. The last quarter was a nail-biting encounter going down to the wire, but come final siren in was Upwey that celebrated a stunning win. Upwey Tecoma best players: J. Hevern, S. Parkinson, S. Dawson. Monbulk best players: D. Werts (3 goals), B. Wicks (1 goal), B. Emmett (1 goal). DIVISION 1 A GRADE NETBALL Wandin 65 d Warburton Millgrove 24 WARBURTON was OK early, but once Wandin kicked into action, it was really all one way traffic as Wandin jumped out to an 18-goal lead by half time. The second half Wandin’s quick movement with the ball was too much for Warby to handle as they added another 33 goals to 10 to win by a comfortable 31 goals. Wandin best players: Carly Baker (2 goals), Melissa Martinov (40 goals), Tayissa Coppinger. Warburton Millgrove best players: Grace Barnard, Karly Wappett (9 goals), Alexandra Bryan. Belgrave 72 d Woori Yallock 35 BELGRAVE played a quality fourquarter game never giving Woori any free space to score easily. Belgrave got out to a 16-goal lead at half time and was looking the goods. In the second half, Belgrave continued to dominate the play and added another 40 goals to Woori’s 19 to win very comfortably. Belgrave best players: Angela Jeffrey, Kristen Robinson, Tara Jois. Woori Yallock best players: Jodi Terry, Stacey Southwick and Jordan Kennedy. Olinda Ferny Creek 59 d Mount Evelyn 49 THESE sides will meet again in a couple of weeks in the Elimination Final, and Olinda will go into that game
with a mental edge as they triumphed in this game by 10 goals. Even though the final margin wasn’t great, Olinda was never headed, their lead was seven goals at quarter time, nine at the half and 14 at three-quarter time. Mount Evelyn did battle it out hard in the last quarter, outscoring Olinda by four goals which will give them some confidence when they meet again in two weeks. Olinda Ferny Creek best players: Ashlee Howard (37 goals), Louise Conway, Madison Taylor. Mount Evelyn best players: Bridgette Barry-Murphy, Jordan Maher, Maddie Hickey (24 goals). Healesville 72 d Emerald 24 IT WAS a complete domination from Healesville as they showed no mercy handing Emerald a 48-goal thumping. The highlight of the game was Healesville’s third term as they ran riot, scoring 22 goals and holding Emerald to just 2 to go 40 goals up at the last change. Healesville stretched that margin out further in the last, scoring 18 goals-to-10 to win big. Healesville best players: Lauren Woodgate (32 goals), Caitlyn Jeffress, Kylie Malone (40 goals). Emerald best players: Sarah MacDonald, Lauren Moses (5 goals), Megan Whiteroad (4 goals). Upwey Tecoma 68 d Monbulk Hawks 36 UPWEY took a little while to get going in this game as Monbulk took it up to the league leaders and only trailed by 10 goals at half time. Upwey showed why they haven’t lost a game in the second half as the really kicked into gear, they scored 17 goals to nine in the third term and then rammed their advantage home in the last, scoring 23 last-quarter goals to nine to win like a top side should. Upwey Tecoma best players: Jordan Lingard (28 goals), Krista Tomlinson, Tamara Elshaar. Monbulk Hawks best players: Sophie Byatt (19 goals), Beth Stubbs, Jamie Sands (17 goals).
Michael Ashton takes a strong mark.

Elbow in for championships By ANEEKA SIMONIS AUSTRALIAN Muay Thai champion Bentley Shefford from Launching Place is due to take the ring for an international fight later this month. Shefford will take on Thailand’s Tuantong Singmanasak at the International Middle Weight Muay Thai bout held at the Lilydale Community Youth Club on Saturday 23 August. Fought under full Thai rules, Fight Night #48 will see competitors to kick and punch as well as use their elbows and knees in combat. National titleholder Bentley is trained by former World Kickboxing champion Nick Lundh in Lilydale. He is also a former mixed martial arts champion and professional boxer. Croydon fighter Soane Tauliliili will also take on Irish fighter Garry Conway for the Australian Super Middle Weight Muay Thai title as part of the semi-main event. Soane is the currnt Victorian Muay Thai champion, winning the title at a competition held at York in Mount Evelyn last month. Amateur boxers Jordan Lundh from Launching Place, Glen Brown and Tony Corless from Lilydale as well as Dylan Carter from Wandin North will also step in the ring in preparation for the state and national titles later in the year. Trainer Nick Lundh said these ama-

Different; but familiar result By RUSSELL BENNETT EMERALD hosted a game on yet another ‘home’ ground on Saturday - this time the Worrell Reserve base of the Bombers’ juniors. But, unfortunately for Josh Taylor’s YVMDFL Division 1 men, the new venue brought with it a familiar result - a 72-point loss to Healesville, 22.17 (149) to 11.11 (77). The Bombers started promisingly on the ground’s smaller confines - trailing by just eight points at quarter time, 4.4 (28) to 3.2 (20). But the visitors started to lay the groundwork for their big win in the second - outscoring Emerald six goals to four to take a 22-point lead into the main break. The second half was all Healesville’s - booting another 12 majors to just four from the Bombers as the likes of Brody
Hodic (six goals) ran rampant. Jack Nugent, George Mason and Ashraf Davies all added three apiece to a balanced scoring effort while Hadrian Prest and Shaun Donkin also shone. For the Bombers, who are headed back to Division 2 with the Brookers next season, Taylor (four goals) led his side by example as he has all season while the Dompietro boys - Michael and Mat - and the ever-consistent Luke McKenna toiled hard all day. Gembrook Cockatoo, meanwhile, concluded its season on a disappointing note with a 44-point loss away to Thornton Eildon, 15.9 (99) to 8.7 (55). Leigh McCombe wasn’t able to continue his recent goal-kicking form in his last game at the helm of the Brookers, restricted to just one major. The Roos, meanwhile, were led by Luke Davison (three goals), and Jay Gorman and Jye Myers (two apiece).
Emerald’s Chris Bray brushes aside his Healesville opponent, Ashraf Davies, to be first to the ball on Saturday. Picture: COURTESY OF ROBYN KUYS Rhys Chapman’s strong year continued with a best-on-ground effort for the home side, while Cam Birch (two goals), Matt Quinn and Riley Wilson (two goals) were the visitors’ best in their final hit out of 2014.
Ambassador saddles up By REBECCA BILLS SELBY local Simon Clarke has been announced as this year’s RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride ambassador. And, as part of his duties, he will cycle with students during one day of the ride as it journeys from Albury to Lilydale. Clarke’s riding potential was discovered on the RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride in 1998 when he rode with a school group as part of the nine-day riding and camping adventure. At the time, Clarke was a student at Selby Primary School and had the opportunity to ride with Olympic track racing gold medallist Dean Woods who recognised his talent. “The group I was riding with consisted of students from high school in Year 9 and 10 - and then there was me who was still in primary school,” he said. “By the time we were about halfway into the day’s ride the rest of the school students had fallen behind and it was only Dean and I left. “He noticed that I was going well and that I was a lot younger than the other students so he recommended I join a club and start racing.” And the rest was history, he said. Clarke moved to Europe at the age of 16 to pursue his cycling dream and has spent the last 12

Clarke said he was really excited to be able to ride with students during this year’s ride and described it as being a little bit like going back to the future. Bicycle Network Chief Executive Officer Craig Richards said he was extremely happy to welcome Clarke back to where it all began for him. He said the ride was a great opportunity to take time out, get physically active and have a lot of fun.
First in best dressed By DENNIS FULLER MOTHER Nature donned her very best skirt at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday when the members rolled in for a three man ambrose events. Teams were chosen and idle promises of victory were shared. At game’s end it was the trio of Ross Martin, Broc Reynolds and Steve Town who won the day with a net score of 59.2. They lead in the second placers on Ben Balfour, Graham White and Peter Clowes on 60. In next place were Mike Litchfield, Brian McCoy and Ian Scott who drew with Con Whitlock, Leigh Morison and Ken Hill. They all finished on 61.5. Leigh Morison won the Stockdale and Leggo nearest the pin on the fourth, Litchfield the seventh, Dean Shannon the 12th, Reynolds the 13th and Ken Hill slipped the pro pin lolly into his pocket on the 18th, Ross Martin over Steve Town.
Several games in the match play championship were played with the winners being Graham White over Ian Scott, Ross Martin over Steve Town and Ken Sumsion over Con Whitlock. White is to play Martin and Sumsion fronts up to Clowes for the right to hit off for the coveted title. In the ladies’ event it became clear early that the winners had sorted themselves out from the rest of the field. Sure enough it was Davina Mackey, Irene Cranston and Joanne Carvill who greeted the judges. Wednesday’s Obviously Foppish Golf (OFG), using OFG handicaps saw a win to Leigh Morison (19) with 40 stableford points. John Piggott (25) was next with 38 points followed by Graeme Fergus (21) on 36. Next week is a Stableford event with the members hoping for a fine week and fast greens.
