New school rules By TANIA PHILLIPS THE brand-new, $11.8 million dollar state-of-the-art Wodonga Senior Secondary College building is now officially open for business and serving the needs of the school’s 1007 students. The building, which the pupils moved into straight after the school holidays, was officially opened by Victorian Minister for Education Martin Dixon MP. The new building contains 28 teaching spaces/learning studios, purpose-built for Science, Maths, English, Humanities, LOTE (Language other than English), Indonesian, Japanese and Chinese, Information Technology and Multi Media. Principal Vern Hilditch said the facilities also include an expansive library/resource centre with three computer and multi-media rooms, a 200-seat lecture theatre with state-ofthe-art audio and visual technology, staffrooms and administration. There is also a Year 12 study space with kitchen and student amenities. “We are very happy (to be in the new building) and the opening went well – the students think it’s great,” he said. “It has given the school a new lease on life.” Designed by Norris Architects the building was project managed by Bryant Alsop and constructed by Hansen Yuncken Pty Ltd, with construction starting on site on 7 March 2013. He said the new modern building was “more a young adult environment” and replaced the previous wooden framed structure which had stood for 50 years. Mr Hilditch said the students now seemed “more heavily engaged” in their new environment, which was set up for both small and large work and featured state-of-the-art multi-media and computer rooms as well as a central library, as well as a VCE centre. From Page 1 He said the new building was “stage one” of the regeneration project with a second stage, to be centred around a gym, earmarked for later down the track. “The second stage is in the hands of the government but we are just happy with what we’ve got,” he said. The old building, which will eventually become the site of the gym and other sporting facilities, will be demolished over the Christmas holidays. Mr Hilditch said a “back to the school” event had also been organised on 30 August to commemorate the move and farewell the old building which has been home to students for 50 years. “It was built 52 years ago and opened in 1964 by the then Minister for Education,” he said.

The day will include an “on the couch” discussion group with five former long-serving teachers who will be reminiscing about what it was like. The teachers will include Steven Fox who recently retired after 42 years at the school. The state of the art building officially opened last week.

Albury races in for big bash ALBURY-WODONGA residents were out in force on Saturday morning to welcome the 110 cars from the annual Variety Club Bush Bash to town. The NSW stage of the rally made it to Albury on Saturday and were treated to breakfast by the Albury Lions Club. More than 350 “Bush Bashers” tucked into the breakfast supplied by the local club on the penultimate day of the 10-day charity event, which had started in Brisbane. From Albury the racers made their way to Sydney for the finish of the Bash and a 30th anniversary party with contestants from all of the Bash events around Australia. The event, now in its 30th year, is believed to have raised $2 million in NSW alone this year and $7.5 million across Australia, with organisers yet to finalise the details.

LOCAL sporting groups have helped put the finishing touches on Thurgoona Oval’s $180,000 makeover. The Thurgoona Football and Netball Club, and Thurgoona Lions, have played a major role in the upgrade, and were there to lend a hand on Friday to help cap off the upgrades that include improved lighting, new netball court seating, and a children’s play area. Teamwork has played a major role in helping give the sporting complex a new lease of life, according to AlburyCity Engineering and Works Committee Chair Councillor
Ross Jackson. “This is what we can achieve when we work together,” he said. “These investments are a necessary step in accommodating the growth of our sporting clubs and making sure they’re equipped to cater for increasing demand on their facilities.” “It sends a great message to the other sporting clubs in the region that if you are willing to pitch in and invest in your facilities, then council will find a way to support you.” The works cap off an incredible council and community
partnership which has delivered more than $180,000 in improvements to the park over the past 18 months. AlburyCity has invested $150,000 into the project, with grant funding, donations and inkind support from the Thurgoona Football and Netball Club and Thurgoona Lions making up the balance. The clubs will meet in October to discuss the next priority projects, which will include upgrades to the changerooms, spectator areas, and additional turf for the growing Auskick program.
Army medics TAFE trained THE first group of trainees to complete the Australian Defence Force Medics Course with Wodonga TAFE celebrate their achievement in a graduation parade tomorrow (Thursday) at the Army Logistic Training Centre, Bandiana. Some 30 trainees began their studies 18 months ago, with 25 graduating. TAFE based a dozen teachers at the Army School of Health to deliver four qualifications: Certificate III in Sterilisation Services, Certificate III in Pathology, Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled) and the Diploma of Paramedical Science (Ambulance). This month’s parade is the
first involving TAFE’s Community Services and Health team. CSH won the contract to deliver the course for the Commonwealth of Australia, represented by the Department of Defence, in 2012 . After graduating the trainees, ranging in age from 20-37, will be known as ADF medical technicians. Commanding Officer of the Army School of Health, Lieutenant Colonel Toni Bushby said there were plenty of benefits of completing the course. “There is a strong partnership between the institute and the ADF, with TAFE providing the tertiary level qualifications whilst the ADF overlay the mil-
itary contextualisation. “This integrated approach produces graduates who are suitably qualified and registered within the Australian health care system and job-ready for employment in the military environment,” she said. Wodonga TAFE has a longstanding relationship with the ADF through Driver Education Centre of Australia (DECA) and National Industry Skills Training Centre (NISTC), providing training in forklift licensing and driving skills. For the CSH team though, the contract represents a step in a new direction.

IT’S every young Australian car enthusiast’s dream to take on the mighty Bathurst Mt Panorama racetrack, and for local Albury/ Wodonga driver Lachlan McDonald it’s about to come true. Lachlan McDonald is set to tackle the famous Mt Panorama in the next few weeks as part of the Super Cheap Bathurst 1000 Event. An Aussie Racing Car driver, he won’t be driving the big event (this year) but he will be there on the biggest weekend of the year. The Aussie Racing Cars is the fastest growing motorsport class in Australia, as well as a primary support category for the V8 Supercars. “They’re like little pocket rockets and look like a miniature V8 Supercar,” he said. “This is my second season in the series but my first drive at Bathurst.” The son of a motor-racing writer, racing is in his blood and it’s not that he’s any stranger to the great track - he’s gone there for work (as a mechanic) on several occasions but this will be the first time he is about to be a spectator for the big race. Aussie Racing Car series cars will be on the road on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for warm-up laps and their four race series. “I’ve driven around Bathurst before but I’ve never driven a lap in anger before,” he said. “Bathurst has a few race events but to race on the biggest weekend of the year with the crowd and the atmosphere is awesome.” And who knows what’s next for Lachlan, who grew up loving Formula One and driving karts. At the moment he is selling cars for a living but he’s hoping to one day maybe just maybe making a living driving cars rather than trading in them. Mind you not that he’s expecting an easy day at the office at Mt Panorama. Let’s face it, with 45-50 other cars on the road it’s likely to be a “challenging thing keeping on the black stuff”. He said the cars, which are very light at just 500kg, will almost be as quick as the Supercars across the top of the mountain - losing a bit of power as they come down the straight.
Lachlan McDonald in race mode.
Albury Wodonga’s Lachlan McDonald is set to take on Mt Panorama for the first time later this year.

Your local nursery team: George, Deb, Andy & Tony
Celebrating 30 years to the community WHEN you meet a guy like George Benyon one question surfaces in your mind – what's his secret to success? Over 30 years George has acquired several thriving businesses which make up the landmark Peards Complex on Borella Road, but his secret remains the same as it was back in 1984 – relationships. “Everything evolves around people – it's a people's business,” he said. Anyone who has met George would understand this immediately. His vibrant nature and genuine character have led him to always culture strong relationships in all facets of business.
George's passion for people even extends through to the wider community and visitors who will soon enjoy what George refers to as “the gift I'm giving back to the town that's given me and my family so much.” George is a co-founder of Peards, the third leg of a partnership which started 1984 between George, his brother Harry and brother-in-law Kevin. After 19 years on their dairy and beef farm, the Benyon brothers and Kevin put their heads together and when they should have been celebrating Peards' first birthday, they found they were too busy – even for cake!
George proudly attributes much of his success to his brother and the relationship they grew over many years. “Harry and I have been partners in business for 45 years which is pretty unique,” he said. “That's probably why we were so successful. My brother and I shared all our money, we always have. Without Harry I couldn't be what I am and without me he couldn't be what he is.” Harry retired four years ago and as such, George and Deb have taken over all four businesses – Peards Nursery, Instyle At Peards, Cafe Borellas and Completely Gorgeous.
Now, George relies on his dedicated wife and trusted staff to help him continue to bring his businesses from strength to strength. “We employ about 40 people all up,” he said. “In the nursery our average staff member has been there 13-odd years and a lot of our staff have been here since day one. “But Deb is the backbone of the operation to a point, without her I can't run it all. It's about partnership...” Finally, George believes in his relationship to the wider community. He employs local, he buys as much locally as possible, he lives local
and now he's awarding the city with a stunning monument set to gain national attention. “I love the city and the city has been good to me, that's why I built the memorial,” he said. George's memorial is set to be unveiled in November and will include a life size bronze sculpture of Albury's only Victoria Cross recipient, Lieutenant (later Captain) Albert Chalmers Borella – a gift costing well over $150,000. “It's a family thing from the Benyons,” George said. “It's my gift back to Albury for what I've taken out. It's my thank you.”

Letters Hang on, hang on...
Staying safe
ON THE one hand, Professor Mourik says (Letters, 13 August) that the argument is not about a person’s freedom to protest (he and his organisation, he writes, are all for it), but on the other hand, he appears to be delighted that the Tasmanian laws that forbid the freedom to protest (even silently) have been a great success. Isn’t that having your cake and eating it? E.N. Harvey, Wodonga.
LIKE all Victorians, I was horrified to learn about the tragic death of a young Ballarat couple from apparent carbon monoxide poisoning last month. Energy Safe Victoria is currently assisting Victoria Police with the investigation, but it appears the couple was using a butane heater to keep warm while sleeping in a car. We want to remind all Victorians that gas appliances attached to portable gascylinders should never be used indoors or in confined spaces. Gas heaters and appliances require plenty of ventilation to operate safely and should only be used according to manufacturer’s instructions. The golden rule is if an appliance is attached to a portable gas bottle, don’t bring it inside. Without proper ventilation, CO can build up and quickly reach fatal levels. And it’s not just the risk of CO poisoning, if you bring those things inside you can also die from oxygen depletion. CO is a silent killer that is colourless, odourless and tasteless. It can leak from faulty, unserviced gas heaters or accumulate if there is insufficient ventilation, such as when an outdoor heater is used indoors. It can cause death or chronic poisoning that is indicated by flu-like symptoms including lethargy, nausea or headaches. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using gas heaters and appliances and ensure there is adequate ventilation for patio and outdoor heaters. Gas heaters including wall units, decorative fireplaces, space heaters and central heating units should be serviced a minimum of every two years by a registered gasfitter. Find a gasfitter in your local area and before booking a service, check that they are registered and have the proper equipment to test for carbon monoxide leakage. You can find more information about this and other energy safety advice atwww. esv.vic.gov.au Paul Fearon, Energy Services Victoria.
Rules of logic ARISTOTLE established clear rules for logic and fair arguments that still are used. A book by Mary M. Spangler explains. Catholics do use logic but use faith as a basis sometimes to know truth in intellect and do good in will of conscience. Peter starts by saying the issue about the Englehart Street clinic is really not about certain things he supports and he tries to say the right to privacy that is paramount. As for cost and distance to travel it certainly is true, but why would you stay away in a hotel from support in case of emergency. Also Catholics can’t condemn a person entering the clinic because they don’t know what happens. Yet at the end he contradicts himself by condemning this so-called protesting. He even says these helpers are extremists or fundamentalists. Yet they are doing what the Holy Father Francis and bishops say and do, if you look at videos on the net. If you want extremists or fundamentalists, look at dictionaries and you can see if you are an adult in the news right now. Bye with CJesu Jos BV Mary Bl pray grace for doing fair duty well like Fred Hollows and in Divine Mercy and OL Fatima predictions. BR ROB C. ANDERSON, JJM MEDIT MSc.

Couple are a real mystery
Monday, 1st September, 2014 (Also year 7 Orientation Day)
By ERIN SOMERVILLE SHANE and Sharon Potocnik will be revving up their engines this weekend as they prepare to take on the outback roads for a good cause. The Table Top couple will be competing as part of “The Sputniks” team in this year’s second annual Mystery Box Rally, as they leave for a mystery fiveday journey on Saturday to raise funds for the Cancer Council. While the couple knows they will be arriving in Brisbane on the Wednesday, 17 August, they won’t exactly know how they’ll be getting there until the night before the journey. The 50 teams will be carless until the night prior to their departure, when they will bid for a vehicle at a private auction. Organisers of the event say this will be just one of the many mysteries that will be unravelled during the event. Teams will only receive the day’s driving route the morning they embark, camping overnight in often remote locations and hidden gems. “It’s a leap of faith as teams journey together out of their comfort zones to destinations unknown along some of Australia’s most deserted and scenic roads,” said a Mystery Box rally spokesperson. Teams have spent months fund-raising for the chance to

In the final weeks before Mystery Box hits the road, expectations are high with over $137,000 already raised towards the $200,000 target. For founder James Freeman, the chance to raise money in a fun way for cancer is a cause very dear to him. “Losing both my parents to cancer was the catalyst for me
wanting to get actively involved in the fight for a cure,” he said “Mystery Box is a different way of bringing together the community to combat the cause, raise awareness and support Cancer Council Australia in an adventurous and memorable way.” For more information or to donate to the Cancer Council and show your support, visit http://www.mystery-box.com. au/ or http://www.facebook. com/mysteryboxrally.

‘Crowdsourcing’ for services GROWING demand for social housing in NSW is among the issues the government will use ‘crowdsourcing’ to address in a new, innovative approach to deliver services, according to Member for Albury Greg Aplin. The Premier’s Innovation Initiative turns to the wider community to seek to uncover the best, cutting-edge ideas and target priority issues. Through the Initiative, the NSW Government will use a competitive selection process to identify inventive solutions from private and non-government organisations. Mr Aplin welcomed the Innovation Initiative as a significant opportunity
for the NSW Government to engage with business, community and other non-government stakeholders. “Crowdsourcing to unearth solutions to difficult issues is an established practice overseas and is already working in places like the UK to improve public services,” Mr Aplin said. “The Innovation Initiative provides a fourth channel that the NSW Government can use to seek new and exciting ideas out there in the community.” The Initiative focuses on four priority areas: Congestion: reducing traffic in hot spots across Sydney’s roads; Social Housing Assets: using inno-

vative financing solutions to assist with replenishing the social housing portfolio; Open Data: fast-tracking the release of open data to maximise value for the community; and Open Ideas: allowing the public to nominate areas where a policy challenge exists and suggest possible solutions. Through the initiative, the NSW Government aims to deliver new services to the people of NSW and improve the way we do business. Mr Aplin said crowdsourcing was a valuable approach and that there were endless opportunities in the wider

community waiting to be discovered. “NSW citizens are one of our best assets and government doesn’t always have the answers,” Mr Aplin said. There are a number of examples across the globe where collaborative projects like the Innovation Initiative have resulted in benefits for the community. Some international examples include: Toronto has introduced a retiming program that changed traffic light signals and improved traffic flow, reducing delays by up to 33 per cent; The London Ventures program launched an initiative that uses pre-

Waste fees to drop
Hop on the sale trail THE Garage Sale Trail, a national program aimed at sustainability, community, commerce and fun is coming to Wodonga. By organising communities around Australia to hold garage sales on the same day, it aims to promote re-use, reduce waste to landfill, enable new neighbourly connections, provide a platform for fundraising, inspire creativity and stimulate local economies. Now in its fourth year, Garage Sale Trail is a not-forprofit mission that works hand in hand with government to inspire social and environmental change. This year’s event will be held on Saturday 25 October, and promises to be the biggest community and sustainability event Australia has ever seen. The council urges anyone wanting to take part to contact them and sign up for this initiative.
dictive analytics to identify young children and risk and help social workers to intervene early. It also launched a centralised website that allows people to search for and book a football pitch anywhere in London, which reduces administration costs and encourages pitch use. In the US, private funding is directed towards affordable housing projects by investors looking to steer their portfolios into socially responsible or ‘green’ investments. Expressions of interest will open from September. Visit www.nsw.gov. au/innovate for more information.
Waste management co-ordinator Jason Perna, Cr John Watson and litter and diversions officer Ray Scammell are encouraging Wodonga residents to sign up for the Garage Sale Trail to be held on Saturday, 25 October.
A RECOMMENDATION to reduce waste disposal fees at its waste transfer station and reduce the residential garbage charge was passed by Wodonga Council on Monday night. The move comes after AlburyCity reduced fees at the Albury landfill following the repeal of the Clean Energy Act and the abolition of the carbon pricing mechanism in July by the Australian Government. Residential garbage charges for 2014-’15 have been reduced by $17.40 from the fees set in the 2014-’15 budget adopted in June and will be applied to rates notices going out this month. Fees at the waste transfer station have dropped by an average of nine per cent across landfill charges. This translates to a saving of $5 per single-axle trailer, with other fees calculated by volume accordingly.
The waste transfer station’s fees are based on the costs of sorting, skip hire, transport to Albury and the Albury landfill gate fee. The changes only refer to landfill - fees on the disposal of other items, like green waste, remain unchanged. Residents are reminded that recyclable materials can be taken to the transfer station free of charge, and separating waste also helps to keep costs down. The waste transfer station is also hosting the Tech Collect campaign, which allows people to drop off computers, printers and televisions free of charge, and will hold Detox your Home on Saturday, 6 September, which offers residents a safe, free and easy to use service to dispose of common household chemicals.

Above: Upper Murray Resort and Conference Centre - the perfect place for your next function.
Below: The beautiful Settlers Room.
The place for parties per Murray Resort and Conference Centre is that is set on 180 acres of unspoiled bushland and hills with sweeping views across the Murray River and after the stresses of a busy year, that’s what you want, right? Nestled in the hills and valleys of the Upper Murray River, the Upper Murray Resort is close to Walwa or Jingellic and only a short, drive from Albury/ Wodonga and Wagga Wagga areas but the road there is picturesque, meaning you have time to relax even before you get to your destination. And if you do choose to have your function inside rather than taking advantage of the great outdoors... The Wildwood Function and Conference Centre is so much more than just a room: there are four function areas of varying size, two with open fireplaces, courtyards and gardens. This gives you a chance to walk in the gardens or enjoy the courtyards as well as sitting inside and taking advantage of the great food. And the nice thing about Upper Murray is that it doesn’t have to be just a day out either - there is plenty of accommodation on-site, which allows your function to be a great bonding time because let’s face it, time is money in a working week and there is never time to relax.
Of course as great as Christmas parties and work events are out there, imagine having a wedding with all the family and friends together for the weekend, being together and enjoying the absolutely beautiful country setting. And with the views, gardens and courtyards there are plenty of spots for wedding photographers to produce those gorgeous memorable unique wedding pictures to remember the event by. With 16 cottages that can accommodate one to eight guests and four motel rooms, there is plenty of space for everyone to come and stay and enjoy what is such a joyous occasion without lots of outside distractions. The resort’s two and three bedroom secluded and spacious self-contained cottages are nestled into the hillsides, with sweeping views from their private verandahs and the cottages all have wood-burning fireplaces, air-conditioning and panoramic views; 12 of the cottages have spa baths. So if you are looking for somewhere special and something different for your business function, wedding or Christmas it might just be worth thinking outside the city square and heading to the Upper Murray Resort.
Martin’s to the world THROUGH Martin’s Albury you have a chance to see the world or to get to know the country you live in a little better. In fact over the next few months Martin’s have plenty of tours that will let you explore Australia in a lot more depth. The next tour they are running is the Circle Tasmania tour, departing 14 October and stretching over 14 days. “Tassie is a great destination, there’s a wealth of natural beauty,” Martin’s Albury owner Rosalie Martin said. “It’s sailing over on the Spirit of Tasmania and then we have 14 days on the island going to the west coast. “Travellers will do the Arthur River Cruise Strahan and Gordon River cruise, coming back to Cradle Mountain and into Hobart.
“We’re in Hobart for four nights and then we come back up to Swansea and Launceston. “And of course there’s much, much more. “We usually do one tour a year to Tasmania and October is a very nice time to go because everything is green in spring.” And then there is the Kangaroo Island tour, which departs on 10 November and spans eight days. “We’ve added onto the itinerary the Coorong Peninsula Discovery Cruise,” Rosalie said. “We spend two nights on Kangaroo Island, we come back to Mannum - the house capital of Australia and then home via Mildura.” Finally, a bus tour line-up wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t feature the Great Ocean
Road, which spans six days and departs 9 March next year. “We’re stopping at Torquay and going to Surfworld, then continuing on to Warnambool for three nights,” Rosalie said. “While we’re there we’re doing the Warnambool River cruise, Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, the sound and light spectacular - Shipwrecked, then we come home via Shepparton where we do the Hurlstone Homestead. “The Great Ocean road is one of the most scenic coastal drives in the world.” Currently, there is a strong demand for theatre shows in Melbourne including The King and I, Les Miserables, Italian Winter Masterpieces and Mother and Son. Book now with Martin’s by calling (02) 6040 4400 or visit them at 66 Fallon St, North Albury.

WE DON’T like to think about it, but Christmas (and the Christmas party season) will be on us before we know it. And while a formal dinner in town is fun, sometimes it’s great to do something a little out of the ordinary, something that you’ll remember and still be talking about next year. The Upper Murray Resort and Conference Centre is that kind of place - a place to get away for a few hours or for the weekend. Sure you can still enjoy that formal Christmas Party in beautiful surrounds but the options are endless. This is a chance to do something a little bit different for a Christmas group or even your next business function. Imagine going canoeing or having a barbecue down by the river with all of your workmates or sitting by one of the two pools and taking in the serenity and enjoying the fun. There’s a great outdoor spa, barbecue facilities or if you’re feeling a bit more energetic (and competitive) you can take to the tennis court. It’s all about just kicking back and having fun - making memories and not just having another Christmas party or function just like last year. The nice thing about the Up-

Head north on the web IF YOU are planning to head north on your next holidays there is a new Southern Gold Coast website, launched last week, that will help you get the most out of your Gold Coast holiday and prove the area is more than just beautiful beaches and theme parks. Launched by CEO of Connecting Southern Gold Coast, Peter Doggett, along with Division 14 Councillor Chris Robbins and Chair of Connecting Southern Gold Coast Michael Tree, the new, interactive and informative site, www.southerngoldcoast.com. au displays the City of Gold Coast branding, and highlights local business as well as tourism in the Southern Gold Coast region. The new site replaces the previous Southern Gold Coast website that was launched five years ago. Mr Doggett said the new website supported his organisation’s vision for the Southern Gold Coast to be widely recognised as a place where lifestyle attracts and sustains business, creative arts and events. “The new website is a key element in our overall marketing strategy for business and tourism in the region and clearly defines the role of Connecting Southern Gold Coast, its board of directors and management,” he said. “It is jam-packed with useful information for potential visitors to our region and includes attractions, things to see and do and accommodation options. “Everyone who has seen the site agrees that it paints a perfect picture of the Southern Gold Coast

and highlights the best aspects including lifestyle, events and festivals, business opportunities and its appeal as a holiday destination.” Mr Doggett said that while the Southern Gold Coast was renowned nationally and internationally for its iconic beaches and surf breaks, the new site encourages visitors and locals to take some time to explore the Southern Gold Coast hinterland. “Self-drive trails through Tomewin and Currumbin Valley

A Mekong adventure CAN there be a more exciting contrast than that between Vietnam and Cambodia? The first pulses with activity, while the second exudes a serene calmness. However, one thing is certain; you will delight in the myriad sights, sounds and flavours when exploring these ancient destinations. Perhaps you will choose to start your adventure among the wonderful French-colonial heritage that bedecks Saigon (known now as Ho Chi Minh City). If so, ready yourself for an explosion of activity, including swarming mopeds, bustling streets, and a riot of aromas. Or, should you desire a more mellow start, begin at Siem Reap. Here too, the French legacy is omnipresent, particularly in the architecture of superb hotels, shops and tree-lined streets. It’s also the gateway to the stunning Angkor, capital of the 12th century Khmer kingdom. Gloriously ornate temples abound, guarded by mysterious faces of stone and the impenetrable tentacles of banyan trees. Regardless of where you choose to begin your voyage, the majestic Mekong lies before you with seven feature-packed days and nights which will reveal the absolute essence of these two enthralling lands and their people. Delight in itineraries designed to take you further than others can; from cities teeming with life to village communities that rarely host guests. Limited to just 60 passengers, the Cruiseco Adventurer raises the standard in luxury cruising on the Mekong. Importantly, its compact size lets it go further – where other craft can’t venture - so you get the most authentic Asian experience. Cruiseco Adventurer promises guests an intimate and relaxed atmosphere, complete with contemporary decor and modern amenities. Its open-deck design lets everyone mingle freely, delighting in the views and creating new friendships, while providing you with plenty of space for quieter times. Everything Dance Border Danceworks
Owner of Everything Dance: Cathy Sharp EVERYTHING Dance has now been on the border for three years, and owner Cathy Sharp could not be happier. With it’s continuous growth, exciting times lay ahead for the shop. “Everything Dance has something fantastic that we are currently working on,” Cathy said. “We are in the early stages of building and creating a website with an online shopping cart, which we are hoping to launch by November. We have had a lot of growth in social media like Facebook and Instagram but now looking at extending that. Quite a lot of dance schools that aren’t from this area shop here, so it will be easier for them as you will now be able to do online purchasing and add to cart. It will also broaden my Australia wide customers. “Some of the brands I stock are Bloch, Capezio, Energetiks, Studio 7 and more. From dance shoes, dance wear, leg wear, hair accessories, many different bags for class and costumes and great gift ideas, you will certainly find that special something to make dancing
even more enjoyable.” Cathy has been involved in the Albury Wodonga Eisteddfod for the past three years, but also had an involvement before that. “My daughter has been dancing in the Eisteddfod for five years now, so I can relate to both sides of the event -being a supportive parent backstage, but also working at the shop and being in tune with what people need that time of year. “The Eisteddfod is such a busy but exciting time for the community and the kids involved as they gain confidence within themselves and they just have a great time.” Everything Dance will be having a 20% OFF store wide (see ad) sale this Saturday 23 August in conjunction with the opening of Elgin Boulevard, so be sure to come and see this beautiful shop for yourself and grab a bargain! You will find Everything Dance located next door to Chicken Stop, Shop 5 ,123-125 High Street Wodonga.

Dance teacher and owner of Border Danceworks, Kylie Romeike could not be more proud of her girls. “Being part of the Border Danceworks performance troupe the girls have been preparing for most of the year,
train training for two hours a week for their troupe routines,” Kylie said. “They all love the chance to get up on the stage and compete and to get feedback from the adjudicator. They are a great group of girls who are dedicated and hardworking.” “Each year, we put together an end of year concert. This year is even more exciting than usual as we will be celebrating 20 years. Who goes there By TANIA PHILLIPS DOCTOR WHO: Deep Breath, One Screening Only, 24 August, noon.
Anyone for tea? Jenna Louise Coleman and Peter Capaldi star as Clara and the Doctor in Doctor Who.
MUCH-LOVED Sci-Fi Program Doctor Who returns to our screens this weekend with a brand-new doctor. And while most fans will be hanging out to see it on the small screen, the BBC and Sharmill Films (the people behind Theatre Live) will, as with the 50th Anniversary and a couple of earlier episodes, be bringing it to the cinema. After seeing it there in a special preview at the Dendy in Sydney last week – with new Doctor Peter Capaldi and his companion Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald) – I can say without doubt it is worth seeing at the movies. Directed by the acclaimed (and maybe new main man of British Arthouse Cinema) Ben Wheatley (Sightseers, A Field in England) and written by Doctor Who executive producer Steven Moffatt, Deep Breath has something of a cinematic quality about it. Not that it won’t be great on the small screen but it is visually breath-taking with Wheatley (who will also direct the second episode) bringing something a little special to the screen. The opening scenes in Victorian London are breathtaking, while a chase scene of sorts benefits from the big screen too.
Wheatley is currently in Northern Ireland working on bringing JG Ballard’s sci-fi classic High Rise with Tom Hiddleston (Thor) to the big screen and after seeing Who I’m ridiculously excited about that project. There is something traditionally Who and yet intrinsically different about this episode compared to recent Matt Smith sagas. Jenna Coleman said Moffat had slowed the tempo down a little this year and brought in more scenes with extended dialogue. That’s not to say that this episode doesn’t move along nicely – there is still only 98 minutes to introduce a new Doctor, save the world and shock the viewers a couple of times. But there is much more character development and we finally see Clara come into her own after being relegated a little to “love interest” to Smith’s 11th Doctor’s tenure. Capaldi (The Thick of It, Local Hero) brings us a 12th Doctor who is still struggling to find out who he is and where he fits in the universe. And while there are dark mo-
ments and moments where you genuinely sit there and go “Oh my God did he just do that” the 56-year-old Scotsman also brings his own sense of very impressive comic timing because despite all the action, drama and adventure this is also laugh-out-loud funny. Smith’s physical comedy is replaced by Capaldi’s dry wit and it works really well as he delivers the lines written by fellow Scot Moffatt. Add a support cast which includes the popular Paternoster Gang, Madame Vastra (fellow Paisley-born actress Neve McIntosh), Jenny Flint (Catrin Stewart) and Strax (Dan Starkey) from the previous season and this ends up being a lot of fun with suspense galore. And of course the nice thing about introducing a new Doctor is you don’t have to be a big fan who has watched forever - this is a chance to jump in and enjoy even if you’ve never watched the show before. We all start again when the Doctor changes and as much as I loved Smith, if this is a taste of the Capaldi era then I say “bring it on!”

Tribute to John Denver BEVAN Gardiner honours the memory of singer-songwriter John Denver in the tribute show Take Me Home - The Music and Life of John Denver, coming to Albury next week. Australian audiences got a taste of Kiwi Gardiner’s talent when he was the support act for American country singer Charley Pride. Even Pride was impressed: “Bevan is amazing. He sounds just like John Denver,” the country singer said at the time. The show has John Denver Management approval, and is authorised by Harold Thau, John Denver’s long-time personal manager and friend. Gardiner has been a fan of Denver’s for more than 20 years, so to now sing his songs is a dream come true. He said it was more than a tribute show, though - in addition to live performances of the songs from John’s extensive catalogue, the show also features exclusive archival film footage of John Denver. This covers his concerns for the environment, his love of life, and explains the inspiration for many of his hit songs through to his premature death in a plane crash. Bevan Gardiner is passionate about what he does. He has been a fan of the famous singer for more than 20 years and even travelled to Aspen Colorado twice where he met Denver’s mother, Irma Deutschendorf, and brother, Ron. “I am really excited about bring-
ing this show to Australia, I am a John Denver fan and to be able to sing his songs is such an honour,” Gardiner said. Gardiner is partially sighted, and can only see people as silhouettes, but this has never held him back from enjoying life and in particular, his love of music. Georgie Daniell, who will tour with Bevan in the John Denver tribute show, is in awe of the young New Zealander. “It is quite eerie singing on stage with Bevan because he sounds so like John Denver you think you are on stage with him.” Daniell, who also toured with Charley Pride, can’t wait to go on the road again with Gardiner. “I had the time of my life and made some great new friends who I hope to see again one day soon.” The show features international musicians headed by acclaimed Canadian musical director David Walker. They will perform all the John Denver songs together with such accuracy and feeling that if you close your eyes you will be effortlessly transported back to the era of John Denver. When: Friday 29 August 2014, 8pm Where: Albury Entertainment Centre, Swift Street, Albury Price: $69, adult, $59, concession, $59 group 10+, $49 student

CASTLE HEIGHTS - Hit The Heights
2
Located in Castle Heights one of Wodonga’s sought after Estates is this large and solid family home. Features include:
“ Spring Is In The Air” “I can almost feel it and am beginning to smell Spring. I would love to help you prepare your home For Sale in Spring, Call me.”
LIKE some film stars from Hollywood’s golden era that never seem to age or lose their beauty or attractiveness, so too our feature property the 2002 Housing Industry Association award-winning strata home. Prominently located at 19 Wilson Street, Wodonga, the unit built by John R. Mee and Associates is one of four well-spaced units on a massive block, just a couple of blocks from the CBD, churches, hospital and other services. The brick rendered home is totally self-contained in that it has its own driveway and private entry. The home is entered via a well fenced but manageable garden area, that already shows signs that spring is but a couple of weeks away with flowers coming into early bloom. Entry is via the security door to the terracotta tiled hallway that extends through the living area through to the sleeping and wet areas of the home. The lounge and kitchen-meals area are northfacing, so the winter sun floods in. The lounge is generous in size and tastefully decorated with timber venetians, curtains and a gas wall furnace. The two-pack kitchen is understated with gas

cooktop, electric wall oven, dishwasher, double sink and pantry plus room for a good-sized dining table. There are three bedrooms, with the main bedroom having access to the bathroom. They feature built-in robes, ceiling fan with light fitting and curtains and drapes. The bathroom is big with a bath, vanity and shower recess while the tiled floor makes for easy cleaning. This home has the added bonus of strategically placed support rails for a person who has balance issues and lacks a little confidence in moving around. There is a rear courtyard which would be ideal for a small gathering of friends or for those wanting to continue their passion for gardening, for which there is a watering system installed. The single garage has a remote for ease of entry. Obviously the logical buyer would be an older couple downsizing but still wanting that third bedroom or study. As an investment it would also “hit the spot” due to locality, quality and generous layout or someone wanting to secure their future living arrangements by buying now with “down the track” in mind.

THE young Wodonga Diamonds Senior Women’s team will battle it out for the premiership in the final round of the Albury Wodonga Football League. Going into the final round of matches before the finals series, the young team is currently sitting in second according to club president Damien Morrison. Morrison said the team put in a solid performance against middle of the ladder side Albury City La Trobe at La Trobe Sports Ground at the weekend to keep their titles hopes alive. He said the 2-0 win was enough to keep the team in second going into the final round this weekend against Albury United, who are currently in third on the ladder. The Diamonds need to win this weekend and hope that competition leaders Boomers FC lose to claim the premiership and put them in the top spot going into the finals series. Morrison said the club had been in rebuilding mode for the past years and not won a premiership since the ‘90s when they were the dominant club and claimed five premierships in a row. He said the side had been developing well over the past three years and was now achieving great results.

Their Golden Power By TANIA PHILLIPS ALBURY Wodonga Kart Club members have dominated round four of the 2014 Golden Power Series held at the club on Saturday and Sunday. Club treasurer Sherry Richardson said 12 of the local competitors finished in the top three of the event. She said more than 150 competitors from all over Victoria and into NSW took part in the event, with the local drivers putting in a amazing display against top competition. “It is a fantastic achievement given the calibre of drivers racing on the weekend,” she said. “Saturday was a beautiful sunny day, Sunday made conditions difficult as it rained which meant all drivers had to go to their wet racing set-ups.” She said the event was the biggest the club would host this year, although planning is un-

O&M FOOTY2014
And so, the stories end Simon
Says with SIMON CORR BE it by accident or design, the penultimate round in this year’s Ovens and Murray season could not be any bigger, with virtually all games set to complete a storyline. Two teams still remain in a battle for fifth spot - one playing coach will see out his final game, one non-playing coach will do the same, and one sharp-shooter will quite likely bring up 100 goals for the season. Setanta O’hAilpin (or O’Hundred, as he may be referred to come Saturday night), requires just four goals to bring up the century. The big fella was a fair chance to bring up the milestone last week however he managed just four goals instead, deciding to give many off. There will be no chance of a handball this weekend as I am sure both Setanta and the Albury Tigers will be keen to get the achievement out of the way. His opponents will be Wangaratta, a team that will have plenty to play for themselves, as a win to the Magpies will guarantee them a finals appearance. Wangaratta sit two points clear of cross-town rivals Wang Rovers and are in the position to control their own destiny, albeit against the ladder leader. Wang Rovers are playing themselves out of a finals position and after losing by 57 points last week to Myrtleford they must defeat Wodonga to keep their season alive. Despite being on the bottom of the ladder with just one win for the year, Wodonga will be an incredibly tough opponent with the Doggies having motivation of their own in their final game of the year. Wodonga will farewell their decorated and much-loved playing coach Ben Hollands, who in his time at the club has served as a wonderful leader and mentor to young men. The Dogs will be desperate to pay homage to their favourite son with a big win in front of a big home crowd. Down at Yarrawonga’s home ground, the JC Lowe oval, the Pigeons will be looking to continue to fine-tune for a third tilt at a flag. Their opponents in Wodonga Raiders will also share similar motivation to that of their fellow home town club, when they farewell their non-playing co-coach Simon Bone. Bone has been an icon at the Raiders for two or so decades and a win or even a bold showing by his team would be a fitting tribute. Corowa Rutherglen will play their last game at home before they enter their first finals campaign for some time. The Roos however will take with them some inconsistency, with recent losses to both Nth Al-

Their opponents in Lavington will also have plenty to play for after last week dropping just their second game for the season and most likely the Minor Premiership. The Panthers likewise need to win to take form into the finals, but they are also still a chance of re gaining top spot should Wangaratta topple Albury.

In both Nth Albury’s and Myrtleford’s final game for the season, the two meet each other as perhaps the best performed teams outside the finals. Myrtleford have had as good a second half to the year as just about anyone and Nth Albury savaged the finals-bound Corowa Rutherglen last week. Both teams will be looking to finish on a high which will not only make securing their current list a little easier, but perhaps go a long way to making them more appealing for next year’s po-
