Aaron Waters’ landscape-inspired Avant-Garde building.

Aaron’s flight of fancy LOCAL design student Aaron Waters has taken out the top student design award at the Building Designers Association Queensland (BDAQ) awards held in Brisbane last month. Aaron, 28, created his design, Avant-Garde, before graduating from the Sunshine Coast TAFE last year and was thrilled to win the award for his water inspired function centre. “It is excellent to be recognised for the hours put into creating such a building,” he said. For Aaron, it was a great chance to use his imagination to create a stunning construction with no budget. “It was a lot of fun to work with a theoretical site. We were given a brief and freedom to design. I wanted

to have fun with it and enjoy the open chequebook,” he said. Aaron, who took out the student design award in 2013, designed the function building along with a sevenminute virtual walk-through tour of what the facility would look like if constructed. Avant-Garde was designed to sit on the site of the Nambour Golf Club and features an international art gallery, convention centre, cafe and beautiful water landscapes. Large viewing decks take in the surrounding vista. Since graduating TAFE last year, Aaron is now working with AK Building Designs in Maroochydore and hopes for a career in building design.

Geared up for growth QUEENSLAND’S residential property market is gearing up for more growth heading into the Spring selling season, according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ). The REIQ June Quarter 2014 Housing Market Review released last week reveals strong growth in the Southeast and stabilising regional markets. REIQ acting CEO Antonia Mercorella said the review reflected increased buyer confidence and a sense of optimism about Queensland’s prospects for growth. “These are the figures many vendors have been waiting for - much shorter

days on market, significantly reduced vendor discounting and increased buyer competition,” she said. “They show key sectors of the Queensland real estate market are on a trajectory of growth, with buyers growing more confident as we head into the Spring selling season.” Ms Mercorella said Queensland’s regional tourism and lifestyle centres, such as Cairns and Bundaberg, were emerging as hotspots for growth. “Confidence is also rising on the Fraser Coast, where values are up 4.2 per cent in the last year,” she said.
