Manhunt in Corio Warning: might be armed, don’t approach By PAUL MILLAR
ON A DRIVE FOR MORE PLAYERS P5
POLICE believe a man wanted in connection with the abduction and probable murder of Leopold’s Paul Kingsbury is “househopping” in Corio. Acting Inspector Boris Buick said John Nelis, who is known to police, was spotted in Corio last week when officers knocked on the door of one of his associates.
“He took off in a vehicle when he saw the police. We believe he may have access to other vehicles,” the cold-case detective told the Independent. “He’s house-hopping and people are concealing him. He has a network of friends and they’re protecting him. “He certainly has not done a bunk,’’ he said. Police believe Mr Nelis, 31,
of Moolap, is armed and warned that he should not be approached. Mr Kingsbury, a 27-yearold father of one, was last seen in Larkins Lne, Moolap, in the early hours of 6 July. Police believe he had been in contact with Nelis. The Leopold man has not contacted family since and his bank account has remained untouched.
“We suspect that he’s dead and that he met with foul play,” Act Supt Buick said. Police had a warrant for the arrest of Mr Nelis in relation to the kidnapping of Mr Kingsbury. “We believe that he holds the key to why he has gone missing and possibly more,” said Act Supt Buick, a detective in the Missing Persons Squad. Geelong feels the love with campaign for pride in city GEELONG needs to share the love, according to Mayor Darryn Lyons. And he’s put his appeal on bright banners flying around the city with the message #LiveLoveGeelong. The banners are part of a new cam-
paign to encourage pride in the city, Cr Lyons explained. “I always use the term Live Love Geelong because I like to feel and see things in our beautiful city and I want others to do the same.
“The idea behind putting the hash-tag in front of the wording is so people can post photos of what they love about Geelong on social media and get a conversation going.” Cr Lyons said the campaign artwork

GEELONG is set to host the Asian Soccer Cup. Before fans of the world game blow a fuse, it should be clarified the hosting rights extend only to the silverware, not the competition. Still, the region’s soccer development chief, Foddy Kyprian, expects a crowd of about 4000 to turn out to see the cup and its accompanying Melbourne Victory players at Bell Post Hill’s Myers Reserve on 14 September. “You wouldn’t get that sort of crowd at many local sport events,” Foddy says. Our cup runneth over!

JOB losses from Alcoa’s closure at Point Henry have reached unexpected, or at least unconsidered, depths. As well as the 800 workers previously employed at the plant, ancillary service providers have also been affected - even union staff. The Indy this week tried contacting a union official about his members from Alcoa but was told he was no longer employed. Alcoa’s closure had forced the union to declare him “redundant”. Never a bleaker expression of the unionist refrain ‘Touch one, touch all’.
TALK about aligning the planets. Two radically different media releases from State Government issued on the same day illuminated the obesity debate. One announced a new fast food outlet for Lara, the other spruiked a LiveLighter campaign against toxic fat, noting that 56 per cent of Geelong adults were either overweight or obese. Maybe the LiveLighter and fast-food ads can appear backto-back for a before-and-after prespective on the obesity debate.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG’S key youth and jobs networking organisation is still under a cloud despite limited funding commitments from both state political parties. The uncertainty comes as Geelong records a youth unemployment rate of 18.2 per cent. Geelong Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN) executive officer Anne-Marie Ryan welcomed the funding indications. “I’m glad there’s been some commitment but it remains unclear what it means for individual LLENs,” Ms Ryan said.
State Government’s commitment of one year’s funding meant “another year of total uncertainty”, she said. The Independent reported last month that the organisation faced closure after losing almost $500,000 in federal funding. Geelong’s LLEN is one of 31 around the state, all lobbying for State Government to fill the federal funding vacuum. Education Minister Martin Dixon recently announced $8 million for LLENs, giving them “certainty for next year”. Shadow education and skills minister Steve Herbert said a Labor state government would allo-
cate $32 million over four years to fund LLENs. Mr Herbert said State Government “off-loaded” much of the LLEN funding responsibility to the Abbott Government, which then cut the funding in this year’s federal budget. “LLENs are critical to communities across Victoria and are a resource we cannot afford to lose,” he said. “Denis Napthine has deserted young people in search of skills and employment. The services that matter to a young person wanting to get the skills they need for the job they want have vanished.”

$140m for GPAC works top priority, says Costa By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN ONE OF Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s major benefactors has backed the case for the ageing venue to be the reigon’s top priority for government funding. Millionaire Robert Costa, one of the powers behind the Costa fruit empire, ranked GPAC above Mayor Darryn Lyons’ push for a new Yarra St Pier and Geelong Football Club’s $140 million bid to complete stage four and five upgrades of Simonds Stadium. The Independent reported last week that GPAC’s upgrade plan had revealed the centre was now “unsafe” and “no longer fit for purpose”.
Mr Costa said the Yarra St Pier was a “distracting chimera” with “vague benefits” but GPAC presented a solid business and employment case. “GPAC is suffering from neglect and requires a complete renewal to meet the current and future needs of the greater Geelong region,” he said. “The whole building is non-compliant for today’s regulations for disabled access, fire and electrical services and concrete cancer is evident - the list goes on and on. “It was built 33 years ago for a regional population of 140,000, but today tries to service the needs of over 300,000. The facility is suffering from patch-up maintenance.”
Mr Costa said governments had committed $50 million to redeveloping Geelong’s cultural precinct but ignored GPAC. “GPAC is not a burden on the State Government as it provides a surplus of funds each year. For every dollar the government provides GPAC generates more than four additional dollars through ticket sales, venue hire and sponsorship.” Mr Costa said GPAC was “the core of our arts precinct” and a vital component of the region’s education program. The “shovel-ready” redevelopment project would provide 600 jobs during construction, 200 ongoing and a fur-
ther 450 among suppliers, he said. Mayor Darryn Lyons said a Yarra Street Pier would deliver 430 jobs and $61.4 million to Geelong in its first 10 years. “The business case also found that Geelong could attract up to 25 cruise ships per year by 2025 if we had a purpose built cruise ship pier,” he said. “A dedicated berth for cruise ships and visiting navy vessels will enable Geelong businesses to share in the provisioning of ships – food, beverages and fuel can be sourced locally which is worth a minimum $300,000 per ship visit. “The Yarra St Pier is the numberone funding priority for the City of Greater Geelong.”
In brief Death sentence A DRUNK, speeding diver who killed a father of five at Hamlyn Heights on Christmas Day will spend at least three years in jail after his lawyer ruled out appealing his sentence on Wednesday. Anthony Charles Davis, 38, was sentenced on Tuesday for culpable driving causing death when he ploughed into Raza Hussain’s taxi at the corner of Ballarat and Anakie Roads in 2012.
Chief quits A “CAREER opportunity” has prompted Surf Coast Shire’s chief executive officer to resign after less than two years in the job. Stephen Wall said he had “mixed emotions” about leaving for the same role at Maribyrnong City Council, which has a budget of $131 million compared to Surf Coast’s $100 million.
Bins idle BINS could sit unemptied for days in Geelong as collection trucks undergo roadworthy tests, according to City Hall. City services manager Gary Van Driel said the tests on Cleanaway trucks would force “temporary delays” to kerbside collections this week.
Defence assault

GEELONG is rallying the troops for an assault on a defence expo as the city vies for a $30 billion project to build armoured vehicles. Clive Pugh, of industry group Geelong Defence Alliance, called for local businesses and organisations to join the delegation at next month’s Land Forces 2014 in Brisbane, which would be a “great opportunity” to tap into military projects.

Police say Corio manhunt target ‘armed, dangerous’ Police had heard about numerous sightings of Mr Nelis and were urging him to give himself up. Act Supt Buick said plenty of local speculation surrounded the
disappearance of Mr Kingsbury. Local intelligence suggested it was payback from bikies. But Act Supt Buick said disappearances without the discovery of a body always sparked rumours.

Weather covered with new book By PAUL MILLAR GROVEDALE’S Lindsay Smail is a self-confessed weather tragic - it’s been on his radar for as long as he can remember and now he’s logged it down in book form. The man with all the historical statistics of the wettest, hottest, coldest days, months and years in Geelong, going back to settlement in 1838, says no books were previously available that dealt specifically with the region. His latest book, Weather Wonders of Geelong, focuses on severe weather - and the region’s had plenty over the years. The weird and the wonderful, the stifling hot days and the bone-numbing chill of the night all make an appearance in Mr Smail’s stunningly illustrated book. One of the strangest nota-
tions goes back to 24 April 1934 when a Grovedale farmer thought something fishy was happening in one of his paddocks. On closer inspection he found dead carp scattered around the fields, probably propelled there by a burst water main. Mr Smail conceded that his passion came from the clouds, the sun and the moon. He had lost count of the times he had been asked whether cold, hot or dry spells were records. “Every time something happens I get the calls but it’s rarely a record,” he said. For the record, Geelong’s hottest day was easy to remember: Black Saturday, 7 February 2009 when the mercury climbed to 47.4C as locals avoided the bushfires that killed 173 elsewhere. The coldest night was 23

Club hopes north chips in with members By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN BANNOCKBURN Golf Club president Dick Crockett is on a drive for more members and he reckons the club’s value is just a tap-in for smart golfers. He hopes the club can chip a fair way into its strategic plan for a 30 per cent membership increase this year. But while locals regularly hit the well-watered-andgrassed course, Dick believes golfers in Geelong’s northern suburbs have forgotten the club is only a short drive down the Midland Hwy. “The 18-hole course is the equal of most around the place,” he contends. “We now have a computerised irrigation system using recycled water for the entire course and all the fairways are couch fairways. We’ve put a lot of hard work into improving the course, hoping that would attract a few more new people. “We’re keen to let people know we’re here, that we’re volunteer-run and offer some cheap but quality golf. “We have around 150 members at the moment but it appears numbers have dropped off a bit. “People are tightening the belt a bit because of economic circumstances and the 10 per cent unemployment. “Bannockburn is not just a golf club - we think of ourselves as a general community facility because we have a full bar and commercial kitchen in a good bush setting, so it’s great for a range of events.” Dick said the club also planned to increase its junior numbers through school clinics and hoped parents might also be tempted to swing a club.
Lara’s new Macca’s to employ 50 By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN LARA will be served a McDonald’s restaurant, putting up to 50 jobs on the town’s menu. Lara Chamber of Commerce president Lorel Robinson welcomed the jobs, particularly for Lara’s young people. “It means jobs for our secondary school kids who can do with the pocket money, plus it’s money that stays in Lara instead of going to Corio or Geelong. “It’s another business and the more the merrier because it entices more people to come into town. “Some people might not like the name McDonald’s but Lara already has two hamburger stores, so it’s not like its bringing in something completely new.” Ms Robinson said she was unsure whether the restaurant would be a 24hour outlet. “I hope it’s not 24-hour because that creates more noise and social impact.” Ward councillor Tony Ansett said he had received some negative feedback to the announcement but most residents supported the development. “You don’t have to shop in them but they do create a lot of jobs and in a town like this it will certainly get used.

“I’m not sure if it will be 24-hour but if it is it will be worth a lot more jobs, perhaps up to 100. “McDonald’s is known for its training and it will give school kids an insight into the world of work.” Cr Ansett said the McDonald’s development was part of the rejuvenation of Lara’s shopping precinct where new supermarkets and specialty stores will create 300 jobs. “We’re on track to have everything open before Christmas,” he said. The Lara McDonald’s was part of an eight-store announcement, with the fast food giant spending $62 million and creating 1000 jobs across Victoria. State Treasurer Michael O’Brien said McDonald’s provided a great opportunity for young people to learn about teamwork, customer service and business operations while earning money. McDonald’s also sourced produce such as beef, eggs, potatoes, lettuce and tomato locally, providing further support to businesses in the area. The McDonald’s announcement came as new figures showed Geelong had the 16th worst rate of regional youth unemployment in Australia. The Geelong region’s rate was 18.2 per cent, with Bendigo the only Victorian region to rank higher for youth joblessness.

SHUTTLE LAUNCH: Jacob Schueler and Craig Booley prepare for the championships at Corio. Picture: GREG WANE 125521
GEELONG hosts Australia’s top badminton competition for the first time next week, attracting leading Australian exponents of the world’s fastest racquet sport. The Clendinnen Shield pits state against state, with Victoria defending its win last year. The team competition precedes an Australian Closed Championships in which top state players smash shuttles at each other at speeds reaching 250km/h. Hosting the prestigious tournaments builds on Geelong’s already impressive record in producing international players including Judy Nyrati, Julie and Darren McDonald, Micheala Wise and Wendy Shinners. Tournament organiser and former Australian inter-
national Craig Booley said a quality field had assembled for the twin tournaments, offering novice badminton spectators a wealth of action. “Getting the tournaments is a bit of a coup for us – often they go to metropolitan venues,” Mr Booley said. “The opportunity to see some top-line badminton will help promote the sport locally. Seeing high-ranked players and national standard badminton will get kids interested and excited about the sport.” Leading Geelong junior Jacob Scheuler, 16, will compete in the closed championships. The Clendinnen Shield runs from 30 August to 2 September and the closed championships from 4 to 6 September at Corio Leisuretime Centre.
Waits ‘slashed’ STATE Government has claimed a dramatic drop in elective surgery waiting lists, including a 38 per cent decrease at Geelong Hospital. But the opposition said the result just returned the waiting list to the level it was when the Liberals won government four years ago. Elective surgery waiting lists across the state dropped to 38,244 after a “record level of activity” in Victoria’s hospitals, Health Minister David Davis said. Barwon Health played a key role in the improvement, with its waiting lists dropping by 787
patients from 2048 at the end of June last year to 1261 on 30 June this year. The 30 June figure was Geelong Hospital’s best end-of-year result in at least 15 years, Mr Davis said. Geelong Hospital provided surgery for 7304 patients of its elective surgery waiting list in the 12 months to the end of June – 271 more than for the same period in 2013. “Doctors, nurses, hospital administrators and support staff should be congratulated for their work in providing more operations for patients,” Mr Davis said.
Not enough time in your life to commit to year round golf?
Mr Davis said the hospital system’s recovery from former Labor government funding cuts was “fantastic”. Opposition health spokesman Gavin Jennings said the Napthine Government was no closer to fixing Victoria’s waiting list crisis. “The waiting list for elective surgery is still bigger than it was four years ago. After billions in Liberal Government cuts to our hospitals the figure is only set to get worse. “The Liberals wrecked our health system, taking the elective surgery waiting list to its highest level on record.”

Mayor call for airport state ‘help’ STATE Government should step in to help Avalon Airport survive its sizeable competition in Melbourne, Mayor Darryn Lyons has told Geelong’s business community. Continuing his appeal for local support of Avalon, Cr Lyons said the shadow of Tullamarine loomed over the fledgling airport. “I don’t understand why we don’t get Tiger, why we don’t get Virgin,” Cr Lyons said. “We know there’s Tullamarine. There needs to be some government intervention to change it as well. “Avalon is caught in a perfect storm at the moment. It has huge potential and that will start around the food exports. Avalon is waiting to happen, its time will come. “We need to lobby, use and keep loving it. Don’t fall out of love with Avalon.” Cr Lyons doubted the Jetstars’s claim that 80 per cent of Geelong domestic passengers bypassed Avalon. “We’re filling those planes 90 per cent at the moment,” he said. The Independent has reported in recent weeks that the airport, considered vital to Geelong’s economic future, has been under siege. Jetstar’s local patronage has fallen from 60 to 20 per cent since inception and the airline has reduced services,
with Sydney now its sole destination from Avalon. Plans for a $50 million rail spur line remain in limbo and an international carrier is yet to materialise. Meanwhile, Melbourne Airport has announced growth plans for 38 million passengers by 2018 and to 64.37 million by 2033. “Approximately 30,000 international aircraft are expected to arrive at Melbourne Airport annually by 2033, bringing 3.2 million foreign visitors expected to spend up to $8.5 billion in the state,” its master plan said. Avalon Airport chief Justin Giddings said State Government must decide whether the projected rate of Melbourne Airport’s growth was in the best interests of Victoria. A new runway proposed for Melbourne would “create a lot of impost on residents” nearby and “congestion on roads already at capacity,” he said. “If that capacity came into Avalon the impost on the community would be far less with same result.” A Government spokesperson said Avalon was “a strategically important aviation asset for Victoria”. “The Government continues to work with the operators of Avalon Airport to secure international operations. “There is great potential for Avalon as Melbourne’s second airport and we encourage Geelong to continue to support its local air service.”

Geelong firm pumps out pellets from waste wood By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A GEELONG company with a unique technique for recycling waste timber into bio-fuel has gone into full production. Australian New Energy director Carolyn Probert said the wood pellets were now available at hardware stores including Mitre 10. “This wood waste was destined for landfill and is now being processed as an alternative fuel source to gas and electricity for heat and energy,” she said. “The pellets are used for heat and energy in pellet fire heaters and boilers and meet International Pellet Standards for emissions and residue. “The pellets are also used for kitty litter, horse bedding and oil, grease

and chemical spills.” Ms Probert said the concept had received local support with strong market growth. “This means we can increase production and also creates employment opportunities for local Geelong residents, especially those from Alcoa. “We’re already planning an upgrade in 2015, which will lead to further production and jobs. The Independent reported in 2012 that Australian New Energy invested an initial $2 million to $3 million in developing the technique. The pellet plant, expected to eventually produce 10,000 tonnes, is based at a Moolap waste-transfer station. The company is also investigating technology to process tyres and medical and household waste.

A “very high” satisfaction rating for Australia’s National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has conflicted with the reported experiences of participants in Geelong. The NDIS this week said its latest quarterly data included a participant satisfaction rating of 1.66 on a scale from -2 for very poor to +2 for very good. Bruce Bonyhady, the chairman of NDIS delivery body National Disability Insurance Agency, said the early data should be “approached with caution” but a “picture was starting to emerge”. He was pleased with the “consistently high” satisfaction rating for the scheme, which has been operating in Geelong and three other trial sites around Australia since July 2013. “However, we are committed to listening to and learning from people’s experiences with the scheme in order to continually improve it,” Mr Bonyhady said. “Participant satisfaction to date is also reflected in the very few appeals lodged with the Administrative Appeals Tribunal just 19 to date. “This level is unheard of for a human services organisation and, I believe, demonstrates that people with disability and their families are well-informed of the decision-making process.” However, in June health economist Dr Katrina Alford told the Independent the “reprehensible” NDIS was keeping participants in
COMPLAINTS: The 30 May Independent revealed the first client complaints about the NDIS trial in Geelong. the dark on complaint procedures. “Ninety-nine” per cent of them were unaware they could take rejected complaints to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, she said. Dr Alford contacted the Independent after it began reporting complaints about the Geelong trial, beginning in May when Grovedale MS victim Rob Goodman revealed how the NDIS stripped her of various support services. Ms Goodman’s story prompted other trial participants to come forward with similar complaints. A government-commissioned
review reported in July that the NDIS had numerous problems including “constraints” in the ability of trial sites to “represent the breadth of participants” and services covered by the scheme. Mr Bonyhady said the quarterly data indicated the NDIS was also operating within targets for response times and costs. “What we are seeing is a scheme built on evidence - continually identifying and implementing better ways of doing things, and adjusting to its surroundings. The time it takes for an access decision to be made is testament to this,” he said. The average time taken to determine eligibility from launch in July last year to the end of December was 29.7 days. In the last six months to June 30 this has more than halved to 13.3 days. “This significant improvement is the result of a number of operational reforms within the agency and reflects its effective learn-build-learn-build approach. The NDIS is all about the people it supports and the agency will continue working to streamline its processes to benefit them and their families.” Mr Bonyhady said the average “package cost” for the first 12 months was $34,600 compared to the “funding expectation” of $35,000. The four NDIS trial sites had so far “committed” more than $130 million in assistance to participants.

MOSQUITO MANAGEMENT BEGINS FOR 2014-15 The City of Greater Geelong has begun monitoring mosquito activity for the 2014-15 breeding season. Our program includes extensive monitoring and treatment of mosquito breeding areas, including the vast wetland system on the Bellarine Peninsula. Mosquitoes are targeted in their larval stage, to prevent the emergence of large numbers of adult mosquitoes. Ground and aerial based treatments occur as new larvae develop in the breeding sites. Adult mosquito levels are also monitored by setting traps in residential areas. The mosquito control products used in our program are larvicides called Bacillus thuringiensis isralensis (Bti) and s-Methoprene. These products only affect mosquito larvae. People, other animals, and the general environment are not adversely affected by the aerial treatments.

Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water bodies. Residents can take precautionary measures around their home to eliminate any potential mosquito breeding areas. This includes keeping rainwater tanks covered, keeping swimming pools salted or chlorinated and emptying water in containers like bird baths, old tyres, pot plants, and buckets on a regular basis. People can protect themselves against mosquito bites by wearing clothing that is light coloured and loose fitting, and covers their arms and legs, and by using an effective insect repellent. If you have any queries regarding our mosquito management program, contact Health Services on 5272 5272 or visit our website on www.geelongaustralia.com.au

ROYAL Geelong Yacht Club’s success hosting international events has won another world championship for Corio Bay. Competitors from around the globe will sail in January’s International 14 World Championship. Regatta manager Peter Kirman expected half of the 90 en-
trants to come from overseas. “The crews of two bring support with them and also their families for at least two weeks. We’re anticipating a lot of people coming into the town.” Mr Kirman said the 14-footers would use a course keeping competitors as close to on-shore spectators as possible. “The 14s are a development
100% of your fire levy goes to our fire services Last year, the Victorian Government replaced the Fire Services Levy with a fairer system, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission. Now every property owner contributes a fair share to Victoria’s fire services, not just those with adequate insurance. Eligible pensioners and veterans also receive a $50 concession. 100 per cent of the fire levy goes to support greater funding of the operations of the Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade. This includes firefighters, staff and volunteers, training, community education, protective clothing, vital lifesaving equipment and more than 1,200 fire stations and 2,300 trucks. Each year, Victoria’s firefighters attend more than 78,000 incidents, including road accidents and rescues, bush and grass fires, fires in the home, and workplace incidents. It’s a fairer fire levy.

Greens ‘Ebola alarmists’
Cuts slammed By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG research into the deadly Ebola virus has become a political football amid the state launch of science week in the city. Greens acting leader Adam Bandt accused Federal Government of funding cuts that would undermine Ebola research at the CSIRO’s Australian Animal Health Laboratories (AAHL) in Geelong. Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane hit back, accusing the Greens of alarmist and wildly distorted claims. Mr Bandt said the Greens would move to reverse the $111 million cuts when federal parliament resumed. The cuts would cost up to eight infectious disease research jobs at AAHL.
“I defy any Government backbencher to try justifying these cuts,” Mr Bandt said. “Critical research at the CSIRO goes under the knife - it’s not acceptable.” Mr Bandt said the high-containment facility housed research critical to protecting Australia from avian Influenza, SARS and the Hendra virus. Mr Macfarlane said AAHL’s research on infectious diseases including Ebola would continue. “CSIRO is making changes to the make-up of AAHL but advises the changes won’t compromise the ability to respond to emerging infectious disease threats such avian influenza and Hendra virus. “Nor will there be any change to planned research with Ebola
virus. Nor will the proposed changes compromise safety and security practices at AAHL. “The Greens’ wild claims simply don’t stand up to scrutiny and they should apologise for deliberately misleading the public on this important issue.” The public scrap erupted as Geelong hosted the National Science Week launch at Belmont’s Victorian BioScience Education Centre. Mayor Darryn Lyons said Geelong was a science centre of excellence. “Some of the most cuttingedge research in the world is being done in Geelong. In areas such as advanced materials manufacture and biomedical research we’re genuinely global-standard.”
Short Cutz to fame set for screening By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A RANGE of Geelong locations feature in a series of short films screening on Channel 31 next month. The Short Cutz film festival features 15 mainly-local films screened across five 30-minute episodes canvassing a range of themes and social issues. The sixth and final episode will hand out awards for the series’ best film, story and direction as well as a surprise award. Short Cutz organiser Zoe Hollingsworth said Geelong filmmakers were involved in all the entries. “Most of the entries are very real, gritty stories. The filmmakers have chosen some serious

Truck traffic unwanted WANTED: Geelong councillors who listen to residents, take their road safety concerns seriously and who promote truck traffic away from residential areas, like McKillop St, which is 75 per cent residential. As residents of McKillop St, our votes at the next council elections will be executed wisely. Pam and Geoff McGarigle East Geelong
Pensioner of note MICHAEL Gamble might be the guy printing the fake $50 notes (Independent, 8 August) if he thinks the pension is too generous (Letters, 15 August). Dispatch this letter to the police at once! Russell J Graham Belmont
Charities need pensioners MICHAEL Gamble’s reply to me in last week’s Independent was somewhat disingenuous. Mr Gamble has “played the man” on 400,000 defenceless pensioners, citing the infallible opinion of a “major charity”, which is undoubtedly a major recipient of government/taxpayer largesse. While charities do, obviously, fill a need, some have been in existence for 100 years but have never succeeded in alleviating the root cause of the need: basic systemic inequity. Their very existence is based on the continuation of the problem. Some of these larger charities amount to vast financial and property empires. Tele-journalist George Negus once stated in an interview that he did not give to charity because he thinks charities should not need to exist. If these “major charities” had been engaged, as Mr Gamble said, in “important social policy” then they might have developed over the years some policy that mitigated the need for charitable institutions to exist at all. Then if 400,000 people did not deserve their pensions our government would be wasting $7.5 billion a year to add to the billions of dollars governments have already wasted and for which they will never be accountable. Who is the real villain here, Mr Gamble? Gary Oraniuk Geelong West
Umpires’ eight points I ADMIT I don’t know a lot about the rules of AFL but, as an avid watcher, I believe that the last two games Carlton lost were results of poor umpiring. The umpire can take the credit for Geelong Football Club’s wins, both times. Bob Thompson Ocean Grove
Reversal of misfortune I HAVE rarely seen more vacant stores in Moorabool St, the heartland of this proud city. It is such a depressing sight; commercial decay and death. What serious steps have been taken or planned to reverse this appalling situation by local government, the local business community and the bodies that represent it? Michael J Gamble Belmont
Seen a ‘big cat’? I WOULD be interested to hear from readers who have seen a Tasmanian tiger-like animal or a puma-or-panther-type animal this year. Parks Victoria’s ongoing incompetence on this and many other issues has been supported by Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos. Freedom of Information requests I have taken out with the State Government reveal sightings of big cats in every state of Australia’s mainland. The marsupial Tasmanian tiger has also been seen in states other than

State saves LLENs I WELCOME the Victorian Coalition Government’s announcement of $8 million in funding to secure the Local Learning Employment Networks (LLENs) program. This is great news for our Geelong Region LLEN, which supports vulnerable young people back into education and training with the aim of getting them into meaningful jobs. The Geelong Region LLEN provides a one-stop shop for careers, skills and employment support, forming partnerships with industry, community groups and education providers to engage constructively with young people and get them on the right track. The program was previously jointly funded by state and federal governments but the future of LLENs became uncertain after the Commonwealth withdrew its $11 million funding share, so I was pleased when Victorian Education Minister Martin Dixon announced the Napthine Government would more than triple its LLENs funding next year to $8 million. This will provide certainty for the 31 LLENs across Victoria and the young people who use them. The funding is on top of $5.1 million the Napthine Government has provided to save workplace learning coordinators working with LLENs. This is good news for our community as we work to help vulnerable young people learn and find meaningful employment. It is further evidence of the Napthine Government’s commitment to building a better education system for Victoria. Andrew Katos MP Member for South Barwon

Help carry Cross THIS month Australian Red Cross celebrates 100 years. It’s a month to honour our history, reflect on our achievements and thank generations of Australians for their support, including one million Red Cross members, volunteers, donors, staff, blood donors and supporters who make such a positive, lasting difference to the lives of people in need every day. The Centenary of Red Cross is a great Australian story about the extraordinary generosity and compassion of people helping people. Founded on an enduring spirit of volunteerism and generosity, Red Cross strives to offer assistance without discrimination and to alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found, regardless of nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. We live in an increasingly complex world with difficult humanitarian challenges and our mission to care for the most vulnerable people in need has never been more relevant. So this month as we reflect on the last 100 years, we look to the next 100. We pass the baton on to the next generation of Australians to carry on the legacy of the millions of selfless individuals who together demonstrate that the power of humanity can and does change people’s lives for the better. There are so many ways you can carry on this legacy – simply visit redcross.org.au or call 1800 811 700. You too can be a part of the great Australian story of people helping people. By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN TWO OF Geelong’s leading choral groups are joining forces to banish the dull and dreary winter blues with a special Father’s Day musical event. Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir and Geelong Harmony Chorus will combine their talents to present Sing into Spring in a marvellous musical collaboration. A regular performer around the region, Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir is currently preparing for a 10-day tour of New Zealand in October. Music director Jeanette John said the choir had performed internationally and earlier this year sung under the direction of famed Welsh conductor Ilid Anne Jones. The 36-member choir had been going strong for 16 years after forming to help Portarlington’s National Celtic Folk Festival to fly the Welsh musical flag, John said. “We’re an all-female choir singing a broad range of music in two, three and four-part harmony,” she explained. “The repertoire includes traditional Welsh and Australian, sacred, musical theatre, popular, inspirational and upbeat music.” Geelong Harmony Chorus has turned the traditional male bar-

of time and her having more wisdom and being able to look back at her lifetime.” A cast of three appears in The Lion’s Bride: Amanda Knights, Gareth Trew and musician Déborrah Morgan. “Some of the poems have been shaped into songs – Harwood’s poetry has themes of music,” Kite said. Blank paper inspired the set design. “We’re very much looking at the idea of a blank piece of paper coming to life,” Kite explained. “We use some silhouette work. It has a paper feel to it because of the importance of writing on paper.” The title of the play comes from one of Harwood’s poems, which deals with marriage. “It’s the idea of when you get married what masks do you wear and how do they change throughout your life time,” Kite said. “Also, the idea of writing under different names is like putting on a mask.” Geelong’s Courthouse Arts hosts The Lion’s Bride on 4 September.

WHILE Australian students learn Shakespeare some of their counterparts in London study Gwen Harwood. The standing of the Australian poet in the UK was a surprising lesson for Australian director Tammie Kite as she worked in London’s education sector. “I was shocked that we in Australia didn’t know about Gwen Harwood,” Kite told the Independent. Intrigued, Kite carried out her own studies of Harwood’s poetry. The result was The Lion’s Bride, a production based on 18 Harwood poems for an insight into her life. “This piece really came from that moment when I started finding out about her,” Kite said. “We dabble in the fact she was also known as a literary hoaxer. She often saw that a lot of males were selected to have their poetry published, so she made up a male pseudonym, Walter Lehmann.” Harwood won more fans with a cheeky hidden note for an editor who previously rejected one of her sonnets for publication in Sydney’s The Bulletin. “After that she was banned from having her poetry published in the paper. She’s a really complex character,” Kite said. Kite described The Lion’s Bride as less a biography about Harwood as a story on the fictional poet she created. The “struggles of a female writer finding the time to write poetry” was another theme, Kite said. “It also goes into memories of her while she was in school and having to deal with her teachers, who were quite keen to punish. “Then it goes into romantic love and the passing

Hearing again with new aids By ANDREW HUMPHRIES
WHEN I left school I began working in factories amid loud machinery and, for fun, I played piano in bands three nights weekly without considering the damage to my ears. Eventually I started having trouble understanding conversations and noticing high notes on the piano were disappearing. I started lip-reading, trying to piece stories together from the words I could recognise. I eventually had a series of tests and stopped playing in bands to avoid any further damage. Now I have to wear hearing protection any time I’m around loud noises. Then I was advised to wear hearing devices, which I’ve worn for seven years with great success. New digital hearing aids can be programmed by well-trained professionals to suit individual needs. Many digital aids on the market, nearly all with blue-tooth connectivity to mobile phones or TVs. "Marcel has tailor made a specific music program for my Alta Pros which has given me the ability to hear the high notes on the piano again that I have been missing for so long. I was also out with friends for dinner at a very noisy restaurant recently and I was able to understand multiple conversations. This is the sort of thing we just take for granted, but when you haven't heard these sounds for years, it's pretty exciting." Andrew Humphries, 2014

Andrew Humphries trials of new products. The clinic’s Marcel Timmers and I had a long chat about my hearing history and he tested me to determine the best outcome for my hearing loss. A pair of Oticon Alta Pro hearing devices was programmed for me to try. I immediately noticed how clear everything sounded. The Alta Pro’s noise compression allowed me to focus on speech around me
while quietening traffic noise. It is very noticeable how well the noise compression works. I was out with friends for dinner at a very noisy restaurant recently and was able to understand multiple conversations, which I think was due to the directional microphones following where I was looking and the computer doing all the background noise-cancelling to make my dinner out a very enjoyable experience. My previous hearing aids could cancel out background noise but were less clear and accurate. I’ve also noticed a big change when listening to radio in my car. The Alta Pro devices seem to pick out the announcer’s voice from the mix of car engine and road noise. Marcel has tailored a specific music program for my Alta Pros, allowing me to hear high notes on the piano again. I can now enjoy conversations with family and friends, watch movies, TV, listen to music and enjoy life again. Anyone with hearing problems should contact Marcel at Hearing Aid Specialists to enjoy life again, too.

IndySport Cats ‘out for all to see’ bite ahead of Hawks clash Wolfgang lands
On the Chris Pitman
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
ze buck brown VISITING German Wolfgang Hilderbrand wanted to sample local freshwater fishing but chose the difficult challenge of Wurdee Boluc Reservoir last week. Wolfgang’s mudeye under a float was hit hard, with Wolfgang struggling on the rocky shoreline before landing a 4.5kg buck brown. It doesn’t get any better than that for a first-time trip to Wurdee Boluc. Justin Rayner walked the banks of Moorabool Reservoir with a fly rod early Saturday morning in search of brown trout, eventually landing a fish of 2.5kg. Other anglers at the reservoir caught redfin to 45cm on Fish Arrow Soft plastics, especially when leaving their lures on the bottom for two to three seconds. Lake Bostock continued producing excellent numbers of Chinook salmon and trout. Kevin Bardsley used a running sinker rig and Powerbait, landing six salmon around 1kg, releasing two. Kevin also tried worms and yabbies without success. Kevin noted that the fish he landed were all caught after 8.15am, before which the fish were very hard to hook. Lake Bullen Merri also produced Chinook salmon reaching 2kg for anglers dropping baits down deep. Salted bluebait fillets and glassies were the most effective when used in conjunction with small sinkers. Mathew Greagen went up country at Lake Toolondo where he boated a well-coloured brown trout of 55cm on a Bob ‘N’ Spoon cast among the trees. Paul Blackborrow and his son set out offshore from the Surf Coast last Saturday, baiting up in 32m. They soon caught pinkie snapper, barracouta and scad as well as an outstanding 4.3kg snapper that took Paul’s bait. To top off the session, they witnessed a whale breach the surface near their boat. Clifton Springs continued producing squid to 1kg over the shallow grass beds. Anglers using 2.5size jigs achieved the best results, while counterparts drifting the channel edges caught flathead to 45cm on salted bluebait. Geelong’s waterfront fished well for pinkie snapper to 45cm on soft plastic turtleback worms in the Pumpkinseed colour. Australian salmon popped up spasmodically, providing great fun for anglers lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. The Barwon River estuary fished exceedingly well for bream, trevally, Australian salmon and mulloway. Anglers fishing Bass yabbies on runningsinker rigs caught bream and trevally to 40cm, while mulloway were taken on the run in-tide best with fresh squid strips and pilchards. With the mulloway averaging 55cm to 75cm, responsible anglers released any caught. Michael and Perry Stavropoulos took their fishing exploits on holiday to Port Douglas where they landed an excellent queenfish while trolling hardbody lures around the headlands. Mick also gave his size 4000 reel and 10lb braid the ultimate test on a 30kg giant trevally, which snapped up his lure. After a 1.5-hour fight they got the trophy GT on deck, took a few photos and put it back in the water. Freshwater anglers should consider wetting a line for trout and redfin at Moorabool Reservoir this weekend, while saltwater enthusiasts could try the Barwon estuary for bream and mulloway.
RED DAWN: Paul Blackborrow off the Surf Coast with his 4.3kg snapper.
GEELONG coach Chris Scott is not into the cat and mouse games of previous footy eras - but he’s not giving everything away, either. The Cats meet Hawthorn in a blockbuster MCG clash this weekend with second spot on the ladder at stake and finals looming two weeks later. While Scott concedes HawthornGeelong games are big purely by dint of the post-2008 record between the two - 12 of 13 clashes going Geelong’s way - he also recognises the result is unlikely to play a large bearing on the finals. Regardless, the pair is likely to finish second and third and the order won’t matter too much because they will then meet again in the first week of the finals. And that’s assuming they complete the tasks they face in the final round; Hawthorn meeting a spent Collingwood and Geelong facing a resurgent Brisbane but at home. Scott ventured that the first finals prospect was yet to be locked in but, even if it was, Geelong would play Hawthorn differently.
COACH: A relaxed Chris Scott fronts the media. “So if this game really mattered I suspect we’d adjust a few things based on what we get or what we got the first time,” Scott said at this week’s media conference.
Picture: REG RYAN
“Our game is there for everyone to see, we tend not to play too many tricks. I think the opposition know us pretty well and know what to expect. Probably the same is true in reverse.
“We may not roll out absolutely everything but, having said that, I don’t think we’ll surprise them if we play them in a final as well. “It won’t be a priority to throw everything into the last game to go into the finals with momentum but it will be a consideration.” Scott was still backing his younger players to take up the mantle. “We’re not picking a team based on blooding young players and giving them an opportunity, setting up our team for 2016. “We’re picking the players we think are best for the job right now. You can’t get a bigger vote of confidence than that; they’re the ones. “We would if we could have Caddy, Christensen, Duncan and Guthrie to be the ones that are leading us and I think they’re stalking steps in that direction. “That’s not to say that Johnson, Bartel, Kelly and Taylor might not force their will upon the game. We hope that happens, too. “But I don’t think we’re relying on them the way we have in previous years, which is positive.”
Rampant North in form but still wary of Ranges By JOSIP ZILIC
YOUNG TALENT TIME: Warriors Vic Country representatives, at back Mitchell Johns, Jamie Noggler, Matthew Stosic, Thomas Hidic and Max Waugh and, at front, George Elliss, Chandler McEwen, Tomas Banks and Anthony Leban.
Young Warriors’ Vic Country call-up By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors has helped nine juniors earn selection to represent Vic Country in a National Youth Championships. Football Federation Australia (FFA) uses the nationals for youth development and talent identification while providing a showcase for the best 13 and 14-year-old boys from around Australia. The nationals give the young players opportunities including national representation and places at Australian Institute of Sport. The championships will begin 29 September at Coffs Harbour. North Geelong president Ivan
Deak was delighted for the boys. “We’re excited for the young gents and they’ve done a marvellous job of embracing the region’s only NPL club and applying their learning to achieve the results together.” National Premier League has put clubs’ operations through numerous changes but Deak said the Vic Country results only encouraged further improvement. “We’ve hit the ground running this season with NPL and we’re proud of the way we’ve gone about putting Geelong on the map with many terrific team results. It’s a credit to the coaches and support staff. “We’re learning every day and
continually looking for improvements.” The selected players are: under 13s, Matthew Stosic, Chandler McEwen, George Ellis, Thomas Banks and Anthony Legan; under 14s, Mitchell Johns, Max Waugh, Jamie Noggler and Thomas Hidic. They were rapt with their Vic Country selection. Max Waugh was full of praise for the Warriors’ support. “North Geelong has provided us with the highest level to compete at with good structured coaching. We want to use that and put in a great team effort for Vic Country against the best young players in the country.”
NORTH Geelong Warriors must tread wearily this Saturday against Whittlesea Ranges to maintain its promotion charge in National Premier League. Whittlesea will be buoyed after defeating Richmond 4-3 thanks to Tomo Trbuhovic nodding in from five metres in the last minute. But the Warriors’ good form continued in a topof-the-table clash with Avondale, which resulted in an emphatic 3-0 win. The conditions and size of the Avondale pitch were unconducive to fluid football, setting the scene for an intense match that threatened to boil over at times. The Warriors hit the lead in the sixth minute when Juso Julardzija’s long throw was met by Mark Paleka who headed it to the back post and out of John Scollo’s reach. Avondale then pressed high on the Warriors defence and had a penalty denied when Jason Principato appeared to be bowled over in the box. North Geelong then broke away to Robbie Zardworny, brutally tackled by Dean Campelj. The players clashed in response, with the referee handing a red card to Campelj on the back of an earlier yellow. The Warriors pursued their attack, reaping a reward when Zadworny received a delightful throughball from Nicholas Jurcic to beat a pair of defenders and chip over the keeper to go 2-0 up. Avondale lifted at the start of the second half, with Bosin Georgevski and Michele Crazia forcing saves from Daniel Zilic and panicking the Warriors. North’s Vito Cichello steadied the tempo in a run-through role to bolster the defence and switch balls through his midfield partners. On 62 minutes the hosts blew any chance of mounting a comeback when prolific scorer Oleksiy Khrapko charged Reardo Luka, up-ending the Warriors midfielder. The referee had no option but to send Khrapko straight off the park. Five minutes later the Warriors put the result beyond doubt when Zadworny burst down the left flank to square the ball into the six-yard box for Julardzija to net home. Avondale’s first home loss in three years signified the solidarity among the Warriors. Coach Micky Colina called the win “courageous”. “We stuck to our plan and remained disciplined throughout the contest - the win was our reward”.
