The trail of rail ONE of the most iconic pieces of the Dandenongs is the Puffing Billy Railway. As it makes its way throughout the mountains from Emerald to Belgrave, it showcases some of the most beautiful parts of the Ranges. It draws in many visitors, young and old, and opens the window to the rest of the hills, which has a lot more for people to see and do. Visitors immediately unwind as they step into Belgrave or Emerald Villages, quaint with the feeling of tradition and community.

Cafes are peppered across the main streets, offering high quality coffee, decadent cakes and snacks sourced from local and organic produce. Enjoy the arts, culture and atmosphere of the hills - no matter which town you find yourself in. Many towns including Sassafras are wellknown for their Devonshire tea offerings, but ensure you walk around the towns enjoying the beautiful handcraft stores too. The hills is a wonderful place, so breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the views.

? Did you know? FORMER Montrose resident Major Charles Morris ordered the first shot of World War I to be fired from Point Nepean, as a German steamer attempted to escape from Australian waters. On the morning of 5 August 1914, a German steamer, the Pfalz, attempted to escape being captured and tried to flee through Port Phillip Heads. Once permission was granted by the Minister of Defence at the time, Lieutenant Morris ordered a shot to be fired across the bow of the ship as a warning. Soon after, the Pfalz surrendered. That shot is now claimed to be the first shot fired by British forces in World War I. It was also the only shot fired within Australian borders during the war. In 1928, he and his family moved to Browns Road, Montrose, and stayed there until his passing in 1935.

A world of wonder MOSTLY known for its tourism, the Dandenong Ranges is a weird and wonderful place - mostly wonderful. With so many places to see and things to do, it’s no wonder the area is on the top of many visitors’ to-do lists. Whether it’s a ride on Puffing Billy, feeding the cockies at Grants Picnic Ground or chowing down on a delicious scone with jam and cream, there is always something to do. Then there are the little nooks and crannies most don’t know about, which those who do know often drive past with little but a second thought - these include the Olinda Falls, the sculptures at William Ricketts Sanctuary and don’t forget the views over the reservoir in Silvan and just before you reach Lysterfield. Pop in to some of the most wonderful arts and crafts stores, or even spend some time at one of the many local galleries. Art, music and flair fill the air up and down the mountain - but what many people don’t know is the sense of community. Whether it’s pulling together to help a friend in need, or fighting for their community; the people of the Dandenong Ranges come together in all shapes and sizes. The people who live, work and play here all are individuals but come together as one. We love it here.

FORMER Mount Evelyn resident Oli Sansom has been named Australia’s Top Emerging Photographer 2014. The prestigious Capture Magazine award went to the young creative in March less than a month after Oli had taken on photography as a serious career. “It was a huge surprise. I don’t consider myself “professional”, so to get the award above 450 other photographers around Australia a year into switching careers was a pretty welcome shock,” he said. Now pursing his passion overseas, Oli, 30, said the competition has opened many doors for him. “I’ve photographed weddings in Munich and New York this month, ran a photography workshop in London and am now shooting music videos in Norway and New York. Oli lived in the hills area for 23 years and went to Mount Evelyn Christian School. Though he admits he was self-taught, only picking up his first “real” camera four years ago, he said the school’s

photography program started an itch for the art. Since winning the award, Oli has been invited to chair several photography competitions but said these opportunities won’t detract from his urge to grow creatively. “Opportunities started coming along to represent major brands as an ambassador or a competition judge. “But, like anything, no award in the world will enhance a career nearly as much as putting in effort to create innovative work that stands out from the rest and gets people engaged,” he said. As well as being the overall category winner to receive a new camera system from Fuji, Oli also won the “portrait” category which made one of the 10 awards available. Oli’s main focus at the moment is split between photographing weddings to fine-art experiments and software development. To see Oli’s portfolio, visit http://www. olisansom.com/.

At the frontier of good food FRESH food, sustainable living and a positive outlook on life - it’s a new frontier for some. The Hills Food Frontier (THFF) is a community inspired good food project which is focused on inspring the people of the Dandenong Ranges to cook, share and learn about good food. Holly Desmond, Laura Spirt and Shakti McLaren joined forces to head the project. “We want to increase promotion of projects and businesses that provide good food options and strengthen good food activities in the hills,” Ms Desmond said. “The Hills Food Frontier believes that good food is nutritious, wholesome, affordable and, where possible, grown ethically by local farmers and producers. “This ‘Frontier’ is an imaginary line that is drawn around the hills community that ensures that local good food is well promoted to locals and tourists, readily available and sustainable.” For more information readers can go to the Facebook page called The Hills Food Frontier and leave their ideas. – Melissa Meehan

Verit-able service BY ANEEKA SIMONIS

MONTROSE Fire Brigade was proud to grant its first 65-year service award to valued member Jack Verity. Mr Verity joined the brigade in 1949 as one of its founding members and was a major face of change to local and national emergency rescue. He was a leader in designing tankers and ancillary equipment in his early years as well as building the brigade’s own original motorised hose washer. Member protection was also a major concern of Mr Verity, who was instrumental in introducing the first type of protective clothing worn by rural firefighters. The brigade’s logo, used on uniforms until the CFA introduced its own badge, also marked another contribution by Mr Verity who was in charge of its design. But it wasn’t just his creative ingenuity that will be remembered from his 65 years in service. Mr Verity was a leader in fire prevention during the 1960s - ‘70s, helping local committees establish prevention planning strategies for bushfire season and a passionate educator. Mr Verity made his way up the ranks, rising to 1st lieutenant in 1963, holding the title for 22 years until his retirement in 1989.

Remaining an active member since then, the brigade said his contributions had been invaluable. “His leadership qualities were well known around Region 13 and beyond. “On many occasions, he stepped in to fill a void in the management team of a major fire with great expertise and little fuss. He acted as a crew leader or crew member on numerous away calls all over Victoria and New South Wales. “He also spent hours guarding the old FRS phone system and attending fire calls both home and away. He has attended numerous rural bushfires and structure fires, incidents and MVAs ... too many to mention let alone to individualise them,” they said in a statement. Over the years, Mr Verity received many medals for his contribution to the community including several service awards and the National Medal with 1st and 2nd Clasps. But in 1999, his hard work, dedication and ingenuity was memorialised when the then captain instigated a new merit award named in his honour. The Montrose community was proud to honour Mr Verity with the Country Fire Authority’s service award at the Montrose CFA’s dinner dance on Saturday 2 August.

Berta eyes piano prize BY ANEEKA SIMONIS AN AWARD winning pianist from Belgrave has been invited to participate at the country’s largest piano competition in September. Berta Brozgul, 24, is one of 12 artists across Australia who will compete for the Australian National Piano Award in Shepparton over a week, starting Monday 8 September. Playing seriously since she was eight years of age, Berta hopes the experience brings her one step closer to realising her childhood dream of becoming a professional pianist. “I am very excited and happy to compete. It’s always amazing to hear other young pianists who will make up the future generation,” she said. Berta said competing in the elite competition would be her greatest achievement to date. “I have won other awards such at the Chopin Piano prize in Ballarat

but nothing on such a grand scale as this competition,” she said. Born in South Africa, Berta moved to Australia with her family when she was 12 years old. Studying at Victorian College of Arts in the city, Berta said her secondary education shaped her passion for music. “The school specialised in music and dance. I was very lucky to be in an environment where everybody encouraged and appreciated the arts,” she said. She recently got back from Austria, where she has been studying music and said she played up to six hours a day as competitions neared. The week-long competition will climax with its grand final held toward the end of the week, with first place winning $20,000, second place taking home $10,000 and third place receiving $5000. The performances will be broadcast live on ABC’s classic FM during the competition week.

A walk from the Emerald Isle BY RUSSELL BENNETT MANY Emerald residents would be unaware that their town is named after the Irishmen who came to the area from the Emerald Isle following the gold rush of the late 1850s. It’s also doubtful they’d know that the Emerald Football Club’s original colours were green and gold - not the Bombers’ long famous red and black.

For our local community, this is just a wonderful way to embrace our history…

The Emerald Heritage Walk has been designed to showcase some of the town’s existing heritage buildings, while also providing a host of little-known facts about the town. Emerald is the oldest town in the Dandenong Ranges, with a history dating back to 1858. Those who go along for the new walk, encompassing much of the town centre and business district, can meander through the local streets, purchase a coffee on the way and see snapshots of where it all began. They can begin their journey at any location, finishing at the Emerald and District Museum located within the historic Nobelius Heritage Park. The walk is a joint venture between the Emerald Community House, and Emerald

Museum and Nobelius Heritage Park. Community House co-ordinator Lynne Trensky could barely contain her excitement at the launch of the walk, held near the Commonwealth Bank branch on Kilvington Drive in front of more than 100 onlookers. “For our local community, this is just a wonderful way to embrace our history,” she said.

“For tourism - wow! “I think this will put Emerald and the eastern Dandenong Ranges corridor on the map and it will encourage visitors to stay longer, and in doing that to spend more across the businesses throughout the township.” Brochures are available in the Emerald town centre - including outside the bank at the main information board for the walk. They detail significant moments

in Emerald’s history, and contain maps to find key buildings and locations throughout the town. Nobelius Heritage Park and Emerald Museum committee president Carey Williams said the history of the town was important. “The museum contains a great deal of significant historical material on the development of Emerald and its surrounding districts,” Mr Williams said.

Tecoma Community Garden is more than just a garden plot.

Albi Walker, 91, and his friend Kevin Holmes enjoy what the garden has to offer.

Planting companions By KATH GANNAWAY TECOMA Community Garden was ground-breaking when it set up its first plots 32 years ago. There were only one or two others in Melbourne, and certainly none in the hills. It’s fruitless to contemplate how many crops have come and gone over that time, much less, how many people, unless your talking about Albert ‘Albi’ Walker. Albi, 91, got involved after retiring to Belgrave in the early ‘80s and although he now lives in a retirement village in Ferntree Gully, he has no desire to hand in his gardening gloves any time soon. It was a chance meeting with the local lollipop man that set him on a path that he has hoed diligently now for all those years. The lollipop man had a plot at the community garden and invited Albi to venture down and have a look.

“There was a vacant plot, so I took it,” Albi recalls of his introduction of community gardening. “At the time most of the people in the garden came from the housing commission houses in Tecoma and so they had a plot and I decided, seeing I was retired, I would try to grow some vegetables, too. “I hadn’t been a veggie gardener, being brought up in Carlton where there’s not much ground around for vegetable gardens,” he said. The social aspect of the project was appealing then, as it is now. “Mostly it was retired people and you spent half your time in the garden and the other half just talking to them. “Because everyone lived really close by it was really about the people you mixed with as much as anything else,” Albi said. Three or four times a week Albi catches

the train from Ferntree Gully to Tecoma and there is always someone there, like his good friend Kevin Holmes, to drive him home. “There are three or four people up there who really look after me,” he said pointing out the raised garden beds that have kept him actively involved. “At 91 I can’t get down to the ground as much these days, so they built up the beds and I can now stand up and plant out. “If I’m going around in summer time without a hat, they don’t let me get away with it... they want to know why,” he added. Just like the companion planting that ensures vegetables get the best chance at staying productive and healthy, Albi said it’s having good people around him that makes the garden work for him after all these years. “I love the gardening, but it’s the companionship I love most,” he said.

Leafy gardens show luscious glory By MONIQUE KUZEFF THE Dandenong Ranges is home to a range of magnificent luscious gardens including the unique George Tindale Memorial Garden. Situated in leafy Sherbrooke, the George Tindale Memorial Garden is a short distance away from the Alfred Nicholas Gardens, making Sherbrooke the perfect stop-over for visitors who are travelling through the hills. Large mountain ash trees are found throughout the garden sheltering the

with her own decorative sculptures. After George’s death in 1977, Ruth maintained the gardens to foster her husband’s legacy. In 1980 she gave the garden to the Victorian Conservation Trust and the Department of Conservation and Environment opened it to the public to commemorate George Tindale. The variety of flowers change with each season and throughout winter visitors can expect to find the lenten rose and hellebore.

beautiful variety of flowers and plants. The garden flourishes with a plethora of rare and exotic flowers which are significant to the garden’s history. Agricultural scientist George Tindale established the garden to help his scientific research for the Victorian Department of Agriculture. After purchasing the 8.4 acre property in 1958, his sculptor wife Ruth helped him plant striking flowers including the vibrant rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias and ornamented it further

Angliss turns 75 IT STARTED life as a small bush hospital, but but now caters to the needs of a growing population in Ferntree Gully and surrounds. In June, the Angliss Hospital celebrated its 75th anniversary. Starting out in 1939, the hospital was then known as the Ferntree Gully Bush Nursing Hospital. It started off with just 10 beds, consisting of two, two-bed wards and six single-bed wards. There was also room for two extra beds on the enclosed verandah. The hospital was the vision of Sir Gilbert Chandler and was funded by Sir William Angliss. Building the new hospital cost only £5,000, with Sir Angliss giving £1,000 toward the cost and the M.M Nicholas family had contributed £500. The hospital already had more than 250 members on its opening day.

The 1939 hospital opening.

It took just four months from laying the foundation to the hospital’s first day. Since then, the hospital has grown to 141 beds and provides the community with a range of emergency, medical, surgical, maternity and rehabilitation services. Angliss Hospital chief of Clinical and Site Operations Ben Kelly said the local community had been there every step of the way. He said the auxiliaries continued to be outstanding supporters with their fundraising efforts over the years. Mr Kelly said another reason for the hospital’s success was its loyal and hardworking staff. “No matter what their role in the hospital, their dedication has been second to none,” Mr Kelly said. “Some things may have changed since the Angliss was a bush hospital, but our commitment to delivering quality healthcare over the past 75 years is a commitment we will hold on to well into the future.”

Sir William Angliss.

Sir Gilbert Chandler.

Celebrating 75 years are Eastern Health Chief Executive Alan Lilly, Eastern Health Chair Dr Joanna Flynn, granddaughter of Sir William Angliss Karina Woolrich, and nephew of Sir William Angliss Digby Norris.

Watchers on the wing BY KATH GANNAWAY BIRDS have a good life in the diverse habitats of the Yarra Ranges region and beyond - and that means so, too, do bird watchers. From open farmlands to rainforests, and spoilt for choice when it comes to established parks and reserves, Badger Weir out of Healesville, the Rhododendron Gardens at Olinda and the appropriately named Birdsland at Lysterfield, to name only very few, bird-watching is not only enjoyable, it is immensely accessible. We went to two of the Yarra Valley’s top bird watchers, Glen Mawson, convener of Birdlife Australia’s Yarra Valley Branch, and renowned bird expert and co-author of Field Guide to the Birds of Australia, Ken Simpson, to find out where the very best spots are to spot birds - and how to go about it. If you are introducing kids to the past-time, Ken says Healesville Sanctuary is a great place to start the conversation. “With a good field guide, it’s where kids can learn their birds,” he said. For Glen, it’s Lillydale Lake, with its bird hides and walkways over the wetlands, and the lake itself a drawcard for all types of water birds. “There’s nowhere better to see a good variety of birds in one spot; lots of water birds, big numbers of moorhens and purple swamp hens, you can often see a darter shimmering in the sunlight,” he said. Maroondah Dam in Healesville, Badger Weir in Badger Creek and Grants Picnic Ground at Kallista are places where kids can get up close to rosellas and perhaps catch a glimpse of a lyrebird scratching away in the leaf litter in the damper parts of the forests. Ken does quarterly bird walks through Yarra Junction Library and has introduced hundreds of people of all ages to the skills and joys of bird-watching over the years. The Warburton Trail is one of his favourite spots with the stretch between Seville and Killara getting a special mention for

its wide range of bush and farmland birds including the rare eastern shrike-tit, eastern whipbird and more common summer migrants, the rufous whistler, dusky woodswallow, and different types of honeyeaters, among many others. The walk between Millgrove into Warburton is another favourite, taking you into the tall wet forest as the Yarra Valley narrows. The spotted pardalote and the white-throated treecreeper are among possible ‘finds’ here. “Having got there, walk the river circuit from the main large bridge to the suspension footbridge, cross over to complete your circuit ... and fall into a cafe and have lunch,” is Ken’s recipe for a complete bird-watching experience. Other areas are the Dandenong Ranges including Sherbrooke Forest and Kallista where there’s a chance of a superb lyrebird. One of Glen’s favourite spots - apart from looking out his window in Chum Creek, is the Cathedral Ranges State Park out of Marysville which he says is a great place for birds of prey including wedge-tailed eagles and the chance of a peregrine falcon. Birdlife Australia Yarra Valley Branch puts out a very comprehensive brochure listing around 250 birds, their status and birding locations. A pair of binoculars and a good field guide are essential equipment, and be sure to take along a notebook to write down your ‘finds’ and record descriptions for those birds that don’t seem to match up. Two excellent books are ‘Birds of the Yarra Catchment - And where to find them’ by Peter Mason and ‘Simpson and Day Field Guide to the Birds of Australia’ published by Penguin Books. Most of all, set out with a great sense of adventure and anticipation - you never know what you’ll find and you’ll be surprised at just how much fun birdwatching can be.

Tanya’s special birthday gift A VOLUNTEER with decades of community work under her belt got a special birthday gift on 26 January, receiving the Yarra Ranges Council’s Citizen of the Year Award. Kilsyth’s Tanya De Visser celebrated her 40th birthday on Australia Day this year and took out the council’s top Australia Day award for her tireless work to help her community. Ms De Visser has spent the last 20 years volunteering for Montrose’s Japara Neighbourhood House, Friends of Elizabeth Bridge and Kilsyth Township Group (ROCK). She said she was surprised to receive

the letter informing her of her award, and modestly added that she thought other volunteers would have been more deserving. However, the community lies close to Ms De Visser’s heart, and she said that some of her first interactions with Japara Neighbourhood House helped her to gain a job in a large bank. Ms De Visser has been a member of the Friends of Elizabeth Bridge group since 2005 and a member of the Kilsyth Township Group since it began in 2006. Over that time, she said

that some of her proudest moments with the township group would be working on two murals that were at the Eastern Ranges Football Club’s walls and a public toilet block - with both of the murals untouched by graffiti. She said that her favourite thing about the Yarra Ranges was the number of people who volunteered their time for community causes. “You go to so many functions and meet so many people and see the amount of residents within the shire of Yarra Ranges that volunteer,” she said.

“They have the same values as you do they value the community and they’re passionate about what they do. “Finding that in a community or a township is absolutely amazing.” When asked if there was anything she would like to see changed in the Yarra Ranges, Ms De Visser said she would like to see more money to invest in their communities via community centres and small grants to the group. “Giving the community their community centres and even helping with small grants goes a long way to what people want to achieve for their communities,” – Jesse Graham she said.

Fearless moral compass BY REBECCA BILLS THE medal of the order of Australia Medal (OAM) recipient and Monbulk resident Vaughan Hinton has an illustrious career and heart for helping. He was awarded the OAM for service to the media through television production and to the community of Monbulk and said he was thrilled and humbled by the award. The 80-year-old was the executive producer of the ABC’s program Compass for 14 years, the executive producer of outside broadcasts including the first television coverage of Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Battle of the Coral Sea and Anzac Day parades from 1994. He was also the executive producer responsible for all religious programs from 1986, the Aboriginal programs Blackout and First Australians in 1987 and documentary producer for Prisoners of Hope and Man in Question as well as a radio broadcaster from 1963 to 1980. In 1992, Compass broke the story about clerical sexual abuse in Australia. “I’ve tried to be fearless rather than orthodox to the extent that Compass was the first media in Australia to expose sexual abuse by religious figures,” he said. “Leading into that show, it was very scary and our main problem was we had researched it for over six months and we knew a lot of people, adults, who had been abused as children but at that point we couldn’t find anyone with the confidence or support to speak publicly. “We were on very shaky grounds when

we first put it to air but 12 months later the times had changed and the program itself had some influence in abused people starting to find each other and begin support groups with some even prepared to go to air with their stories.” Mr Hinton said to this day he was astonished that Compass is still going and there are only two ABC television programs that have lasted longer - Playschool and Four Corners. After retiring 10 years ago, Mr Hinton decided to move to Monbulk to be closer to his daughters and granddaughters and became the secretary at Monbulk Fire Brigade and is currently the auxiliary support member. In the Australian honours system, appointment to the Order of Australia confers the highest recognition for outstanding achievement and service.

Pressure’s on for station master By REBECCA BILLS APPLYING for a job with Victorian Railways at the age of 16, Healesville’s Gary Manning had his application denied because he wore glasses. Now, more than 45 years later, Gary’s dream of working with trains is a reality with his title of Station Master at Puffing Billy. Gary said he has always been fascinated with steam trains and loves being able to volunteer his time for something he loves. “For my 50th birthday my family took me on a train ride at Puffing Billy and that’s when I decided to become a volunteer,” he said. “I’ve been Station Master for two years now but I started here as a conductor 10 years ago and worked my up through the volunteers. “The station master’s job is quite a stressful one but at the same time it’s extremely satisfying at the end of the day.” The station master’s role is that

of ensuring the driver, fireman and guard are ready for duty and there are enough carriages for the amount of tickets sold as well as ensuring all trains are running on time. As well as being a station master, Gary is also a booking officer at the railway selling tickets to passengers. “I get to talk to a few hundred people a day, which I really love,” he said. Having moved from Tecoma to Healesville on Black Saturday Gary said it takes him about 45 minutes to get to the Belgrave station for the two to three times a week that he volunteers. “Puffing Billy is only able to run due to the volunteers and I love volunteering here - you are surrounded by great people.” Those who are interested in becoming a volunteer at Puffing Billy or who want more information about the railway can visit www.puffingbilly.com. au/volunteering.

Teddies head for sick Timor kids By MELISSA MEEHAN FOR some, it’s the only toy they will own. For others, it will provide comfort after facing illness or operations. The children at the Bairo Pite Clinic in East Timor will receive colourful knitted teddies as well as medical supplies thanks to the Rotary Club of Lilydale. Patients from all parts of the capital city, Dili, surrounding sub-districts and remote areas are treated at the hospital. Funded largely by donations and with an average of 250 to 300 patients each day, the clinic provides invaluable healthcare services for many patients in Timor-Leste. In partnership with the Rotary Club, a group of Healesville knitters, led by Sally Price from Healesville Jewellers, has

created 200 Trekker Teds for children who receive treatment at the clinic. Rotarian Jenny Selway said that the Rotary Club has always supported the clinic and sent over a number of pallets filled with medical supplies each year. “For us, these bears are wonderful fundraisers and the 200 bears will raise about $1000 for us which, in turn, will pay to send five pallets over there,” Ms Selway said. Ms Price said that the Trekker Teddies went wherever they were needed. “We came together as a group of women who loved to knit and these teddies give us the opportunity to help out those less fortunate,” she said. “Now we have members from Phillip Island and Darwin.”

BY MARC McGOWAN SIXTY Olinda-Ferny Creek footballers, netballers and support staff will next month put aside the traditional drinking-based off-season trip to offer volunteer assistance in Vanuatu. Club officials estimate they have accumulated $40,000 worth of donations, including sporting, medical, school and trade supplies, which will be transported in a 40-foot container. It is the second straight year that club representatives will have travelled to Vanuatu in this capacity. Next month’s trip includes two weeks of volunteering across Vanuatu islands Efate, Espiritu Santo, Nguna and Pele, where OFC members will run skills sessions for up to 1500 schoolchildren. OFC netballer Emily Groszek, who took part in the Vanuatu visit last year, said the experience was “unlike any other end-of-season trip”. “It was an incredible and motivating

experience and so rewarding to see the satisfaction we could bring to the remote Ni-Van communities,” Ms Groszek said. “These schools have little or no sporting equipment and often the schoolchildren have never even heard of AFL, despite there being national AFL and netball teams in Vanuatu.” OFC will play Australian Rules football matches against Ni-Van mixed football teams and the Vanuatu national AFL team, the Volcanoes. There are nurses, teachers and tradesmen among the club’s volunteers and they will put their expertise into practice in the Ni-Van communities. OFC officials still need to raise $4000 to ensure the container of donations makes it to Vanuatu capital Port Vila in time for their arrival. For more information or to assist in fundraising, contact OFC club president Helen Wositzky on 0499 016 884.

Hub is back up THE reading room is stocked, the cafe is reopened and Mount Evelyn is abuzz with excitement. After months of uncertainty following the Morrisons closure, the former Morrisons hub is back up and running. Community House president Nicky Condello said the community house was providing many new and exciting programs, including social nights starting in September. “For us it’s all about working for the community with any community groups that will work with us, Ms Condello said. “Our focus is programs, workshops and partnerships. Eastern Region Libraries customer service representative Suzanne Allan said that all members were pretty happy that there was a library presence in town. “It’s technically a reading room, but it’s well stocked and always growing. The new cafe has also opened recently, with new products and choices available on the menu.

and subsequent rate notices, she said. Areas particularly affected by the carbon price listed by the council were construction costs and utilities. The Yarra Ranges Council was contacted by the Mail, with questions about whether a refund of carbon taxrelated costs would be possible.

The council will be running a cost analysis, to figure out the exact impact the repeal of the tax will have, and Cr McCarthy estimated that results could be seen in next year’s budget. “We anticipate that any identified savings will be returned to ratepayers through the 2015-’16 budget process

A COMMUNITY group has called on the council to refund carbon tax cash collected through rate rises in the last two years. But the council said it was looking at passing on savings from the tax repeal through a drop in rate rises, after a cost analysis has been run. The Yarra Ranges Council announced on 13 August that it would run the analysis, and pass on any savings identified to ratepayers. Deputy Mayor and Acting Mayor, Maria McCarthy said that the council increased rates by 1.5 per cent in the 2012-’13 financial year to accommodate the carbon price’s impacts. Now the tax was gone, Cr McCarthy said the council would be investigating any savings, and passing them on to ratepayers. “Effectively, Yarra Ranges Council has been caught between a rock and a hard place, she said. “The previous council tried to do the right thing by including the carbon tax in the rates, so that ratepayers wouldn’t be forced to pay a lump sum or extra costs down the track, if the tax was to continue. Healesville Action Group (HAG) member, John Anwin, said the council should be refunded the extra money it was charged by utilities, and that the council should in turn refund the carbon tax money collected to residents. “That was what we paid at the time, and it needs to be refunded, he said. “If that leaves a shortfall for the shire, they need to go to who they paid it to, and get the shortfall back from them. He said he understood the council’s difficult “balancing act of trying to keep rates low while still providing ample services, but that he stood resolute in demanding a refund. Cr McCarthy said the council’s Long-Term Financial Plan committed the council to a once-off rates reduction, which would be representative of the carbon tax savings. The commitment was under the condition of the tax being repealed, with no substitute legislation put in place. She said she didn’t want the council to be seen to be profiting from ratepay-

Water dreams come true By MARC MCGOWAN MACCLESFIELD paddler Amanda Reynolds’ bronze medal from last month’s ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships is an ever-present reminder of her dream year on the water. The 42-year-old has rarely let the medal out of her sight since returning from Moscow, where the championships was held. Only 1.3 seconds separated Reynolds from the LTA (legs, trunk and arms) K1 women’s para-canoe 200m world championship, just three months after she won her maiden national title. “It was awesome, because it was so close. It was like, ‘wow, I actually did it’,” Reynolds said. “It’s the next step closer (to selection for the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games). I think it would be just the be-all and end-all type of thing. “Finally getting to that goal that we’ve been working on for the past year or so would be fantastic, but there are still a couple of years to go.”

Amanda Reynolds is still floating on air. 118295 The mother of two underwent elective surgery two years ago to amputate the lower part of her right leg. She suffered chronic pain in the leg for about 20 years due to a central nervous disorder that caused her leg

not to function properly from the knee down. Reynolds, who studies equine sports therapy, remained positive throughout the life-changing process. “I was ready for everything, because before the amputation we had to jump through a lot of hoops to make sure that was the right thing to do,” she said. “It was more ‘OK, what’s next; we need to get through this and do the next thing’. I looked on the brighter side of it; that I would have a life once it was gone.” Reynolds’ first canoeing experience did not come until after the operation through the annual Murray Marathon, which she completed with a friend. She can’t live without it now and even intends to be on the water - at Patterson Lakes or Aura Vale Lake - in the coming weeks despite technically being on a break. “I’ll just have a play on the water and get out and enjoy the scenery,” Reynolds said. “I would go nuts if I

couldn’t get on the water.” She will also do some light gym work and mountain bike riding to maintain her fitness. Reynolds’ next qualification race is in December, but she is already looking ahead to defending her national title in March next year and returning to the world championships. “It’s an opportunity I never thought I would have and now I’m on it, I want to just drag as many people in just to give it a go - whether it be canoeing or another sport,” she said. “I encourage people just to put it out there and give it a go and you don’t know how far it will take you.” Reynolds’ success has earned her a Victorian Institute of Sport scholarship which will offer invaluable access to elite coaches, sports therapists and nutritionists. She also thanked Australian head coach Guy Power and Patterson Lakes Canoe Club mentors Steve Vegh and Mark Dougall for their support.

Productive patches are food plant pleasure “We want to get people interested in fresh food as well as providing food for the community,” Ms McLaren said. “It’s all about raising consciousness to clean up the place as well as providing an edible garden.” Mr Merlino funded the plants in the garden and Ms McLaren said she hoped his staff would tend to the garden in the future. “We hope the community takes ownership, too,” she said. “If it gets the opportunity to grow, people wil be able to help themselves to the lettuce and other herbs.”

THE Victorian Coalition Government has introduced new legislation to improve businesses environmental practices with help from the council. The Environmental Upgrade Agreement (EUA) aims to help local businesses access funds, to become more energy efficient, reduce their waste and water usage. The scheme will allow local councils the opportunity to offer a new financing mechanism to help businesses secure longer term and lower interest loans for environmental upgrades. “This innovative scheme will encourage businesses to make significant environmental upgrades which will not only improve the efficiency of their buildings but will also boost their bottom line,” Gembrook MP Brad Battin said. Under the EUA scheme, lenders provide finance to a building owner for environmental upgrades. Following this process, the local council then collects the repayments through its rates system before passing them onto the lender. Russell Northe, the Minister for Energy and Resources, has given the newly introduced legislation his seal of approval. “The Coalition Government is putting in place practical and effective programs to promote energy and water efficiency deliver reductions in waste and build a cleaner Victoria,” he said. Currently, participation in the EUA scheme is only voluntary for councils. However, Mr Northe said that the Victorian government is currently passing legislation which will allow councils across the state the opportunity to be involved. “I would encourage councils and businesses across Victoria to take advantage of this scheme.” The Victorian Government will consult with councils, business groups and financiers on the details of implementing the schemes.

THEY are making a difference, each small garden patch at a time. The ladies who are a part of the Hills Food Frontier worked hard on Tuesday last week to clean up a garden outside MP James Merlino’s office, turning it from a box of weeds into an edible garden. They were stocked up with locally purchased leafy plants that could be added to the lunches of Mr Merlino’s staff. Group member Shakti McLaren said that the aim of the group was to get more food gardens on the mountain.

“In the process we expect to create up to 200 jobs in the regional hospitality and tourism industries and create a truly unique and worldleading gastronomic village.” Cr Samantha Dunn has urged Mr Bennett and Mr Garrisson through the media in recent weeks to involve council and the community in the process. Cr Dunn, who has not been in contact with the owners, said it was “an exciting time for Burnham Beeches” despite her reservations. “It’s a highly engaged community, so their expectation is that on those major sorts of developments that community does get to have a say on it,” Cr Dunn said. “I have some questions around the 50 villas proposed for the site. To me, that seems a lot.

“I’d want to explore that a bit more around who owns them, how do they come to be and is there potential for a subdivision in the future ... that’s why I’d rather have the conversation.” Among the concerned residents is former Shire of Sherbrooke Mayor Betty Marsden, who is also a long-time member of the Dandenong Ranges Gardens Advisory Committee. Mrs Marsden was supportive of owners’ efforts to restore the former Nicholas family country mansion, but worried about “over-development” and increased traffic in the area. She was on council in the 1980s when ex-Burnham Beeches owner John Guy re-opened the establishment as a hotel and restaurant and has kept close tabs on it since.

EIGHT Mount Evelyn CFA volunteers are climbing for a good cause at the Melbourne Firefighting Stair Climb. Sponsored by Fit Gym in Mount Evelyn, these local firefighters are preparing for a high-intensity, multistorey climb at the Crown Metropol to raise funds that will go towards remodelling The Alfred hospital’s Burns Unit. Hoping to raise $100,000 for the cause, 200 state career and volunteer firefighters will climb 28 floors

wearing 25 kilograms of turnout gear and a breathing apparatus on the 7 September event. Of all the stations, Mount Evelyn CFA has reeled in the most funds, totalling at $2392 on 14 August. The team have been training hard over the last few weeks at Fit Gym Mount Evelyn who have provided them with free memberships and personal training sessions over the period. Participating in the climb is Mount Evelyn CFA’s Paul Simpson who wanted “thank Fit Gym for supporting the team in the climb.”

The challenge is not for the faint-hearted. Mr Simpson says the firefighter gear they are required to wear, which includes pants, a jacket, helmet and breathing apparatus with a tank and mask, makes for hot and heavy work. “The structure gear doesn’t breathe,” he said. The volunteers have also been raising eyebrows at the 1000 steps, training there in their full gear on Sundays. “They all start off laughing but then begin to stop and ask for photos,” he said.

good shove along,” Cr Cliff said. “This bloke is really switched on and this place is going to be a showpiece.” A written Burnham Beeches statement said the Planning Scheme Amendment application would enable future permit applications to be lodged with council for consideration. The master plan was developed through “extensive consultation” with leading planning consultants and architects, Cr Cliff, and council’s head of planning Andrew Paxton and his team. “We hope Burnham Beeches can be restored to its former glory as a country mansion, after languishing, largely neglected, for more than 23 years,” Mr Bennett said in the statement.

A BOX trailer was stolen from a home in Heroes Avenue, Emerald. The owner of the trailer arrived home from a vacation last month to find that the trailer was missing, but assumed that a family member had borrowed it. When they discovered a family member did not take the trailer, they reported it to police on 22 August.

He was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates' Court on 4 December.

By MARC MCGOWAN RESIDENTS will get a chance to air their views on celebrity chef Shannon Bennett’s Burnham Beeches redevelopment, despite community confusion suggesting otherwise. Mr Bennett and business partner Adam Garrisson, who bought Burnham Beeches in 2010, plan to transform the Sherbrooke establishment into a six-star hotel and one of Victoria’s top tourist destinations. The Piggery Café and Burnham Bakery are already in operation on the 23-hectare site. The owners’ decision to lodge a request with Planning Minister Matthew Guy for a planning scheme amendment, including their master plan for the site, has sparked public debate. One media report described the move as Mr Bennett’s and Mr Garrisson’s way of bypassing Yarra Ranges Council. But Councillor Noel Cliff, who has been in talks with Burnham Beeches owners for about two years, said council would be involved in the planning process. “The story going around that Shannon Bennett bypassed us is not true,” Cr Cliff said. “He can speak to whoever he likes and he spoke to the government, but all planning decisions are with us. “The small thing he’s applied for is to get the restaurant open, and that followed procedure.” Cr Cliff said the public would have the chance to comment once Burnham Beeches owners made further applications. He declined to speculate on when and what the next application would be, or whether Mr Bennett and Mr Garrisson wanted to triple capacity to 1700. “It’s going to be the best thing for the Dandenongs. This is what we need to give our tourism industry a

Eye on the past centur y AS WE commemorate as a nation the Centenary of Anzac, we are also rightly looking back 100 years in our local community. The Federal Government’s Centenary of Anzac local community grants program has allocated $125,000 to each federal electorate to commemorate and tell the local stories of a century past. Here in our electorate I formed a committee comprising 10 outstanding local residents led by the former principal of Monbulk Primary School, former councillor and mayor of the Shire of Lillydale Ray Yates. A number of grants have already been approved, and more will be in the months ahead. The first provided $5200 for the plaques and storyboards at Lillydale Lake and Coldstream to commemorate the centenary of the Monash camp of instruction that saw 3000 future Anzacs travel to our district for a week long camp in February

On the day the rest of the nation reflected on the first shot in the war - fired from Fort Nepean - local residents met to unveil a plaque funded by another grant near the Montrose War Memorial to recognise the local aspect to that great event. Radio unheard By BRIDGET SCOTT THE vice-president of Emerald’s radio station is outraged the group will not find a home in Emerald’s former cop shop. Dale Blair from 3MDR said the Cardinia Council decision was “short-sighted” and was disappointed the council passed up the opportunity. At a council meeting on Monday, 18 August a recommendation was passed which meant council would not purchase the old Emerald Police Station for a community hub in the town. This decision comes after a petition with more than 2000 signatures was handed over to the council to support the use of the old station as a new hub. The council said they would not purchase the old station based on a number of factors, claiming it was too expensive. Ranges Ward Councillor Brett Owen said the “Emerald community deserved a first rate facility.” He added that it was not the ideal building for the community’s intended use. “It is, in my opinion not big enough and disability access is not sufficient,” he said. Councillors also agreed that if the radio station moved into the former police station, there would not be enough room left for other community groups. Mr Blair hit back at the claims, saying there would have been plenty of space. “Under the ideal plan, it would have been a good portion,” he said. “We were open for our area to be scaled back or shifted.” As a compromise, Cr Owen and Cr Leticia Wilmot said the council would look at creating a community hub near the library in town, but Mr Blair said this was “pie in the sky.” “It won’t ever happen,” he said. “It’s already been 10-15 years from

Emma Johnson, left, with vice-president of 3MDR radio station Dale Blair Picture: ROB CAREW and their petition to council. 123207 when council first proposed it.” Councillors acknowledged the hard work from the Emerald community to promote the old station as a new hub, and said it had highlighted the need for a hub in the community. “It will be at the forefront in coming months with budget discussion,” Cr Owen said. Mr Blair said he expected that the idea would be off the table until 2019.

“This has supposedly brought it forward now,” he said. The Emerald resident said the needs of both the radio station and the community were urgent, and while the alternative solution was long term, something needed to be done in the short term. “We would be hoping to have it resolved in some other way,” he said. “Our needs are before that time,” he said.

WALKING along the main street in Monbulk is now an educational experience, with a new heritage trail etched along the pathways. The Monbulk Historical Society implemented the project at the start of August, in the hope it would increase interest in the township’s long history. “The trail endeavours to summarise the rich geological, cultural and economic history of the town. By building the community’s awareness of Monbulk’s history we want people to be proud of our town and its achievements,” Monbulk Historical Society’s President Jill A’Vard said. The outdoor memorial uses symbols stamped into the footpath of the bottom section of the main street, explained by an artistic sign that elaborates on the historical events of the town including settlement, the story of the “Emerald diggings”, fruit growing and the Monbulk Hawks

football ground. “Knowing a town’s heritage is important,” Ms A’Vard said. Chandler Ward’s Councillor Jason Callanan said the historical trail had created a buzz in the town, with people increasingly interested in learning about its past. “People here have a real pride in their township and interest in understanding its history. The trail is a great way to show it,” Cr Callanan said. Ms A’Vard said her family had lived in Monbulk for over 120 years. Now a mother and grandmother to a younger generation who also live in the township, she said her “love for the history of the town” would make it hard to ever leave. The heritage trail was funded through the Yarra Ranges Council Grants for Community- Arts and Heritage Development Grant received in 2012.

Chain gang show the way A DEDICATION to customers has been rewarded for Lilydale’s Glenmac Sales and Service, with the group receiving an award after just two years in town. Glenmac was awarded as Victoria Metro Stihl Dealership of the Year 2013 last month after setting up shop in the area only two years ago. General manager Jason McMillan said the staff were ecstatic about the award and that it was a demonstration of the hard work that had gone into the business since it began. He said Glenmac had taken over from Hunter Macpherson in 2012 and that the business’s commitment to providing high-quality agricultural machinery to the Yarra Valley was as strong as ever. “We’re really proud of what’s been achieved and we want to thank the Yarra Valley and Lilydale areas for their support,” Mr McMillan said. “Without the customers, the business and the award wouldn’t be possible.” The dealership of the year award is based on a number of factors ranging from customer satisfaction through to sales volumes and service levels. Mr McMillan said the shop specialises in John Deere farming vehicles and that the company has had a long and successful history, beginning in 1978 in a small factory in Ferntree Gully. “We’re a diverse business,” he said. “All of our brands, we believe, are premium brands - from John Deere, to Stihl, Honda and Silvan.” Glenmac Sales and Service is at 459 Maroondah Highway, Lilydale, and is open from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and 8am to noon on Saturdays. For more information, call 9735 0166, email Lilydale@glenmac.com.au or visit www.glenmac.com.au.

HE GREW up in the hills of Pennsylvania before a life of violence and crime took hold, but now he is now known as the Machine Gun Preacher. Sam Childers in his early teens was a shotgunner, an armed guard for drug dealers, and during this time met a stripper named Lynn who later became his wife. It was during those years as a shotgunner that Sam said he became increasingly concerned about his safety and feared he would be killed, and slowly began to distance himself from that life. Lynn had returned to church during this stage and Sam also began to re-establish his faith. It wasn’t long before the village began to call him the Machine Gun Preacher. Sam currently holds the Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for social justice and his story has been made into the Hollywood movie Machine Gun Preacher. A special community breakfast will be held on Saturday 6 September at 1 Church Street, Emerald. Sam will be there in person to talk about his experiences. The breakfast starts at 6.45am, finishing at 8.30am and costs $7.50. To book or for more information call 5968 4046 or email info@stmarksemerald.org.au.

THE Carrie Bradshaw of Selby has released her debut book, combining her love for fashion with her equal thirst for creative expression. A coming-of-age book Dress, Memory: A Memoir of my Twenties in Dresses tells the tale of author Lorelei Vashti’s younger years remembered through her precision wardrobe. Now in her mid-thirties, Lorelei’s love affair with dresses began from a very young age as she watched her mother, a seamstress, pour her passion and time into making clothes. From falling in love for the first time to playing in a band and moving overseas with a new career, Lorelei has always stitched her memories to her fabric. “Some people remember stages of their lives through the smell of certain places or the music they were listening to during that time. I remember them through my clothes,” Lorelei said. With two full wardrobes in Queensland and three in Selby, Lorelei wrote the book in the hope it may memorialise her dresses, allowing her to let go. But when asked if she has

FReeZA heaps the hype for fresh battle Selby author Lorelei Vashti with her many dresses and new release Dress, Memory: A Memoir of my Twenties. 126095 disposed of any of her dresses, collected from across the globe, the answer was a certain no. “I just couldn’t let go because they all have special memories. And now they are more special because they are in the book,” she said. Dresses close to her heart include a neon yellow smock that she wore to her first writer’s festival, a repurposed red velvet dress she wore on stage with her band Young Professionals and the bottle green wool dress her mother had made 20 years earlier for a job interview. The book contains 10 chap-

ters which feature a new year and dress from her twenties. The memoir has already received early praise from influential names including Offspring actress Clare Bowditch, who said: “I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed reading this book. Such a treat.” Dress, Memory, published by Allen and Unwin, evolves from Lorelei’s fashion blog which she started in 2011. Spicy, yet sweet offerings The Hundred-Foot Journey Starring: Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal, Charlotte Lebon Rated PG for mild themes and infrequent coarse language THE second big culinary movie of 2014 after the intimate road-trip movie Chef, The Hundred-Foot Journey is a pleasantly eccentric mishmash with broader cultural resonance. When an Indian family of cooks, led by Papa (Om Puri) and his ambitious son Hassan (Manish Dayal), move to rural France to set up an Indian restaurant, they enter a spirited rivalry with Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), the strict manager of a classy French restaurant across the street. The Hundred-Foot Journey is nothing groundbreaking, but it’s an endearing and touching film with nuanced characters. The feud between Papa and Mallory offers

some good laughs, and it’s gratifying to see the walls between them - both cultural and personal slowly dissolve to make way for harmony. Charlotte Lebon is radiant as Marguerite, Hassan’s love interest and later competitor in Mallory’s kitchen. Another positive aspect of the film is that it never places French or Indian cuisine on a pedestal; both traditions are shown to have their own strengths and virtues. But where The Hundred-Foot Journey shines is in Lasse Hallstrom’s lush visual direction and use of symbolism. The delectable cooking serves as a catalyst for the drama and romance, and is deftly used to represent euphoria, community, innovation and even violence. Whether you enjoy Indian food or not, The Hundred-Foot Journey is easy to swallow and an uplifting time at the movies. –SETH HYNES

By ANEEKA SIMONIS THE hype is building for the Yarra Ranges FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands grand final on Friday 29 August. The regional music competition showcases the elite talents of five different bands that have nailed preliminary heats in the leadup to the final at Mooroolbark Community Centre. The Bean Project from Upwey, a band which describes itself as having an acoustic, brass groove is one of five music groups due to take the stage. Ben Langdon, 19, guitarist and singer/songwriter

said he and fellow band member Brice Turcato, 21, were excited to go head on for the regional finals held later in the year. “We are super-keen to play. We mostly play around Olinda and Belgrave, so we are working our way up. “I find that playing when we play regionally, people are more excited and keen to listen because it’s less saturated,” Ben said. Pop punk favourites Forever Ends Here will headline the Yarra Ranges final. Tickets are $15 on the door. For information, visit http://www.freeza.vic.gov. au/.

Book for mental health By ANEEKA SIMONIS INSPIRING courage and action in teens suffering from mental health problems is the goal set by a Warburton author in her latest release. Bent But Not Broken is a book that removes the stigma attached to mental illness and encourages young people to seek specialist care by Elizabeth Margaret, who spent years facing the same struggle. “Mental health amongst the adolescent age group is terrifying (but) teens are unwilling to seek appropriate care when it comes to mental health. “The book helps people in the middle of a hard time find the courage to talk to a friend or seek professional help,”

Warburton author Elizabeth Margaret hopes her books will help adolescents seek help for mental health problem. 125541 Ms Margaret said. Writing with years of experience, Ms Margaret (who publishes under a pseudonym) has

worked in youth care for over 40 years as well as looked after “flocks” of damaged foster care children. Her urgency to help comes from her troubled past as a victim of sexual abuse. Exposed in her debut release, Daddy’s Girl, she hopes this story of trauma and recovery will inspire others to make the same positive turn around. “I know from my work that the sexual abuse and neglect of children is still happening. “The harm that is done will always leave a scar but it doesn’t have to define you,” she said. An author of two years, Ms Margaret’s book can be purchased on Amazon and eBook.

Finals taking shape YVMDFNL FINALS kicked off in style for Division 2 last weekend in the Yarra Valley Mountain District “Community Bank” Football and Netball League with wins to Yarra Glen and Thornton in the Seniors, and Seville and Yea with A Grade wins, while in Division 1, Mount Evelyn snuck into the five in the Seniors and Upwey Tecoma finished on top undefeated in A Grade netball. DIVISION 1 SENIORS Wandin 21.18 (144) d Belgrave 12.12 (84) WANDIN has finished the season with a resounding 10-goal win over Belgrave and has finished on top of the ladder. At quarter time, it actually looked as though Belgrave was going to be right in this game as it only trailed by one point but did have more of the play. Wandin, however, kicked into gear in the second term and rammed home nine goals to two in a great display and the margin was out to 41 points. Wandin stretched the lead to 77 points by three-quarter time on the back of a six goal-to-three quarter before Belgrave pulled the margin back slightly in the last quarter. However this was Wandin’s day and they will be rewarded with a week’s rest to prepare for a clash against the winner of the Woori Yallock/Upwey Tecoma Qualifying Final played next week. Belgrave’s Mitch Collins was a shining light for them as he booted eight of his team's 12 goals. Wandin best players: R. Wilson (1 goal), J. Myers (1 goal), J. Bayliss (1 goal). Belgrave best players: M. Collins (8 goals), E. Clasby (1 goal), J. Peagram. Healseville 15.14 (104) d Monbulk 10.10 (70) Monbulk will play finals, but they have missed out on the allimportant double chance as they went down to Healesville by 34 points. This game didn’t start too well for Monbulk as they couldn’t get the ball forward and they only managed one behind for the term while Healesville booted 2.5 and really should have been further in front. The second term opened up a little bit and goals came in a bit easier with both teams booting four goals for the quarter which gave Healesville a three-goal halftime lead. Monbulk did claw their way closer in the third, booting three goals-to-two and the margin was just 11 points at the last change. Healesville played a solid last quarter suggested as they ran Monbulk off their legs, booting seven goals-to-three to finish off their season on a very strong note. They have given Monbulk plenty to think about as they go into an Elimination Final against Mount Evelyn next week. Healesville best players: J. Shaw (5 goals), A. Davies, S. Donkin. Monbulk best players: J. Major, D. White, J. Anderson. Woori Yallock 15.13 (103) d Mount Evelyn 12.13 (85) WOORI Yallock has been rewarded with the double chance after an

Maddie Hickey reaches high. 18-point victory over Mount Evelyn. Despite Mount Evelyn losing, they have made the finals thanks to other results going their way. Mount Evelyn did lead this game early and went to the first break with a seven-point advantage, but it was Woori who got their running and handball game going as they shared the ball brilliantly, booting six second quarter goals and backing that up with seven third quarter goals while Mount Evelyn could only muster two and one respectively; the three quarter time margin 35 points to Woori Yallock’s advantage. Mount Evelyn did finish the day reasonably, booting six goals to three but they were never any real threat but they do at least take something into their Elimination Final next week against Monbulk while Woori will take on Upwey in the Qualifying Final. Woori Yallock best players: M. Bonuda (1 goal), M. Witkowski (1 goal), L. Boontjes. Mount Evelyn best players: W. Nicholson, C. Urquhart (1 goal), J. Fellows. Upwey Tecoma 17.16 (118) d Olinda Ferny Creek 10.12 (72) UPWEY squashed any chance Olinda had of playing finals and they did it early, they started full of run and had six goals on the

board at quarter time to just one and Olinda could see their finals dream fading away. Olinda was more competitive in the second quarter but they couldn’t make any in-roads on the deficit as Upwey went into half-time with a 43-point lead. Upwey continued to broaden the gap in the third with a five goal-to-two term and this game was all over bar the shouting in the final change as Upwey had shot out to a 63-point lead. Olinda did outscore Upwey five goals-totwo in the last quarter, but Upwey had this game wrapped up early and will go into next week's Qualifying Final against Woori Yallock with plenty of confidence. Upwey Tecoma best players: C. Davis, K. Grenda (4 goals), S. Currey. Olinda Ferny Creek best players: S. Horner (3 goals), D. Noorda, J. Rankin (1 goal). DIVISION 2 A GRADE Seville 46 d Yarra Junction 20 Qualifying Final SEVILLE was way too good for Yarra Junction and they set their win up early with a 14 goals-tofour first term to give them a good start. Yarra Junction went toe to toe in the second and did stay in the game to an extent trailing by 12 goals at half-time. The second half saw Seville pull away comfortably

and finish the day well with a 13 goal-to-three last quarter and will now play Yarra Glen next week with the winner moving onto the Grand Final. Yarra Junction gets one more chance and will take on Yea in a knock-out. Seville best players: Tania Hoare, Zoe Abbruzzese (15 goals), Ashleigh Hardy. Yarra Junction best players: Jenny Gardner (12 goals), Catherine Cook, Amanda Finn (8 goals). Yea 51 d Powelltown 26 ELIMINATION FINAL YEA played an outstanding game not giving Powelltown any easy avenues to goal. They got out to a handy 13-goal lead by half-time and looked quite comfortable. The third term was a good contest as Powelly did have their moments but Yea was still able to stretch their lead out to 16 goals by the last change. They then finished in good style adding 16 last-quarter goals to seven to win by a comfortable margin and will move on to play Yarra Junction in another knock-out final next week. Yea best players: Chelsea Spagnolo (33 goals), Gaby Duncan, Lauren Tesoriero. Powelltown best players: Demi Barber, Erin Williams, Jessica Day. A RESERVE Yea 36 d Yarra Glen 28 QUALIFYING FINAL This was a great game that Yea had all the answers for, they only led by one goal at quarter time but managed to stretch that lead to four goals by half-time and looked a little more at ease when shooting for goal. The second half was a great battle and Yarra Glen did challenge a couple of times but Yea had the composure to quell any comeback and came away with a great eight-goal victory and will now take on Seville next week for a place in the Grand Final while Yarra Glen get another chance in a knock-out final against Powelltown. Yea best players: Rhiannon Aldous (23 goals), Cindy Hayes (13 goals), Kaylee Turvey. Yarra Glen best players: Nicole Moate, Sharnie Gray (19 Goals), Courtney Chapman, Nicole Moate. Powelltown 50 d Alexandra 29 ELIMINATION FINAL THIS game was a beauty for the first half as it went goal for goal and Alexandra held a narrow onegoal lead at half-time. Powelltown started to get their game gelling in the third quarter and got their defensive structure working well which saw them get out to a handy eight-goal lead. Powelltown really hit their straps in the last term, they ran the ball extremely well shooting 16 goals all while holding Alex to just three to runaway with the win. They will now take on Yarra Glen next week in a knock-out while Alexandra’s season has come to an end. Powelltown best players: Erin Benham, Kerrie Walton (27 goals), Georgie Haynes (7 goals). Alexandra best players: Rachael Manthorpe (16 goals), Jessica Lucas, Stephanie Morten (13 goals).

Warburton Millgrove’s Tim McKail takes off with the Sherrin with Emerald player-coach Josh Taylor in hot pursuit. Picture: COURTESY OF ROBYN KUYS

Bombers eat the humble pie By RUSSELL BENNETT EMERALD’S last game for at least 12 months in the top tier of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League ended in disappointment on Saturday, going down to Warburton Millgrove by 69 points - 20.21 (141) to 11.6 (72). The Bombers had to travel to Marysville, more than an hour from Emerald, to “host” the game - given their usual Chandler Reserve base in Avonsleigh, and Cockatoo’s Mountain Road Reserve were both out of action. Josh Taylor’s men were still in the

contest at quarter-time - trailing by just 23 points - but a 43-point second term from the Burras ensured they had a stranglehold on the contest by the main break. Warburton only kicked two more goals than Emerald in the second half, but the damage was already done. Justin Davis capped off a strong season for the Bombers by booting seven goals to take his 2014 tally to 37, but he was his side’s lone multiple goal-scorer. Luke McKenna has been a clear standout of the Bombers side all season and Satur-

day was no different, while the Dompietro boys - Mat and Michael - and skipper Caillin Porter also shone. The Burras booted 20 majors, but with 41 scoring shots should have converted on a lot more. Scott Muir (4 goals) led the way on the scoreboard; while Billy Irving (3); and Matt Wappett, Aaron Pettinella, Isaac Andueza and Tim McKail (2 apiece) each played their roles in a balanced attack. Wappett, McKail, Liam Barnard and James Iacono, meanwhile, were stellar in their side’s big win.

DONNA Banks simply wanted to instil confidence in her two daughters when she enrolled them at Kakushinkan Shukokai Karate as four year olds. That part of the equation has proven a success: her eldest, 11-year-old Cassandra, is the school captain at Chirnside Park Primary School. But Cassandra and Tegan have blossomed so much since starting the martial art that they each won silver medals at this month’s Australian Karate Federation National Championships in Perth. The medal-winning performance was an early birthday present for Tegan, who turned 10 just days later. Cassandra, a four-time Victorian representative, is also set to make her debut for Australia at next month’s biennial Oceania Karate Championships in Suva, Fiji. “We’re thrilled at their success and it exceeds all our expectations,” Donna said. “We started the girls in karate just for self-confidence. We never thought they would be representing their state and country. “Cassie was extremely excited (when she found out). She was in the car with her dad and I was on the phone and apparently she was quite vocal and screamed the car down.” There may be little between the siblings in age, but Donna said their personalities could hardly be more different. “They’re actually opposites,” their mother said. “Tegan is more outgoing and a real go-getter and that’s why kumite really suits her, whereas Cassie is more of a perfectionist

and why she is a kata girl.” Kumite and kata are the two competition disciplines in karate. Kumite is the sparring side of the sport, whereas kata involves a series of technical movements. Tegan’s national achievement was in the 10-year-old girls 35kg-plus kumite category. Cassandra’s silver medal came in the 10 and 11-year-old girls individual kata and she also added bronze in the team version of the discipline. Those medals follow her effort to claim bronze in the 10-year-old girls kumite a year earlier at the same championships. She came fourth this year. Cassandra will compete in kumite in Fiji, with selection based across a two-year period. “Cassie was out injured for two weeks before, so I think she was a bit tentative,” Donna said. “She had a compressed nerve in her back - an injury she sustained with an impact to the back - but she’s all recovered now. “She hasn’t really been hurt before. The kids are quite protected with their gear and things and she takes it all in her stride.” Cassandra continues to train six days a week at Croydon under sensei Daniel Thomas in the lead-up to the Oceania championships, the only change being her complete focus on kumite. Tegan trains three times a week, but combines her karate commitments with ballet and, until recently, basketball as well. She also plays piano. The Oceania Karate Championships is being held between 11 and 13 September.

Peter perfect in sun By DENNIS FULLER THE birds were singing, the sun was shining and all was well at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday when the member trundled up for a gentle round of stableford in champion conditions. Peter Glasscock (16) chose this day to star as he came in with 38 points to win B Grade and over-all. A Grade saw Broc Reynolds (15) as the winner when he played to his handicap for 36 points. Of the great unwashed only Peter Clowes (17) got near his handicap for 35 points followed by absolutely nobody else of distinction. Mike Litchfield picked up the Stockdale and Leggo prize for be-

ing nearest the pin on the 4th, Travis Gerbes the 7th and 12th, Steve Town the 13th and Clowes pocketed the pro pin dosh on the 18th, again. The ladies’ event saw a runaway winner in Brianna McCoy who led from go to woe by some distance from Gracie White. Wednesday’s Over-rated and Feeble Golf (OFG) was stableford event and Peter Clowes (15) rolled out a great round for 40 points to win on a knockout. Next were Ben Balfour (18) and Graeme Fergus (22), both with 37. Next week is a par event, so I suspect a large contingent will rock up and not want to miss out on the fun presented by this format.
