Albury Wodonga’s largest circulating newspaper

Young model makes an impact Albury 14-year-old Ella MacLean may have been the youngest contender at this year’s Country Girl Australia preliminary heat, but she certainly made a model impression. FOR THE FULL STORY TURN TO PAGE 3

It’s the end, school friends By ERIN SOMERVILLE THE sound of more than 9000 Wodonga students’ daily chatter, laughter, and dramas have bounced through the halls of the old Wodonga High School building. Now, after 52 years of service to so many of the Border’s children, the building is heading towards its final days. As the school, now known as Wodonga Senior Secondary College, celebrated the opening of its $11.8 million new building this month, their past has had to make way for their future. The old school walls will begin to come down in the September school holidays. Continued Page 8 Right: Farewell Wodonga High School. Albury signs up By ERIN SOMERVILLE A NEW wave of petitions is rolling across Albury this week, as the local Rights to Privacy Group takes its fight state-wide to create an exclusion zone around abortion and women’s clinics. The new petition, launched on Saturday, is addressed to the NSW Government, and aims to create an exclusion zone around all Women’s Health Clinics in NSW, including the Englehardt Street Fertility Control Clinic, and prevent anti-abortion protesters from approaching patients. Locally, the petition if successful would see the group Helpers Of God’s Precious Infants, who gather outside of the Englehardt clinic every Thursday, removed from the vicinity.

A minimum of 10,000 signatures is required before the petition can be tabled for discussion by the House. The Rights to Privacy Group is confident it can get the numbers. “The launch went wonderfully,” Rights to Privacy spokesperson Dr Pieter Mourik said. “I am delighted with the continued support of the Albury community, and expect to get a minumum of 10,000 in four weeks.” The petition has been distributed to the 21 Women’s Health Clinics across NSW, in locations such as the Central Coast, the Hunter, Sydney areas, Coffs Harbour, the South Coast, Wagga Wagga, and the Blue Mountains. The group is also appealing to the Australian Medical Association, the

Australian Nurses and Midwifery Federation, and Charles Sturt University for support. The state-wide move comes after a petition by the local Rights to Privacy Group addressed to Albury City Council earlier in the year, carrying over 5000 signatures. That move fell flat because local government is unable to pass exclusion zone laws. Dr Mourik said the initial failure had not deterred the group from pushing for an exlusion zone at women’s clinics, and its members have worked hard on putting together a succinct document appropriate for State Parliament. “Sadly, the last (petition) was wasted, but we are appealing to those five

and a half thousand people who signed the last one to support this one,” he said. “This is not about abortion anymore, it’s about women’s right to privacy. “Women are feeling harrassed.” Dr Mourik said many women had contacted him to say they were travelling to Melbourne for the procedure, in a bid to protect their privacy in a smaller community. Member for Albury Greg Aplin’s office chose not to comment on the launch of the new petition addressed to the state, but said he would be presenting it to parliament if the minimum 10,000 signatures were gathered.

IN MOST places you look, you’ll find a story about cancer. It might be someone who is fighting the battle, a relative or friend who has lost a loved one, or just someone who is trying their best to lend a hand against this disease. Daffodil Day volunteer Rae Gibbons is all three. Having lost her mother to the disease - before defeating it herself in 2010, the same year it claimed the life of her brother Ms Gibbons was one of many affected volunteers out in force on Friday to help raise funds during the Cancer Council’s biggest annual event. “I’m amazed at the money the community has donated, she said from her Lavington stall on Friday. “There are a lot of people who come with a story about cancer and like to talk about it on a day like today. The stalls across the city were so busy that program co-ordinator for Cancer NSW Western Melissa Nixon spent much of the day ensuring volunteers had enough merchandise for the day, which was selling at a fast rate. Ms Gibbons said her experience with cancer highlighted the many strengths the Border area had in supporting patients, as well as areas that needed improving. She said young people, and cancers such as melanoma and bowel cancer, needed more

The Cancer Council runs many services for those with cancer, including an information centre at Murray Valley Private Hospital to help sufferers with the many questions that come with the illness. It also runs a helpline run by specialist cancer nurses who can offer support and reassurance, prevention tips, information on treatment and side-effects, and end of life issues. Across the city, Hilltop was buzzing as ABC Goulburn Murray’s morning program was broadcast from the facility in recognition of Daffodil Day. Hilltop, which opened only 17 months ago to provide accommodation for cancer patients, is often filled to capacity, highlighting the number of peo-

Albury mayor Kevin Mack was at Hilltop for the event, and said the local community was a great supporter of the cause. “Locals of the community keep giving to Daffodil Day as a result of the good work they do, he said. “You can see the work they do on the ground. “Everyone has had someone who has been touched by cancer, it is a day to talk about the departed and those going through it. The Cancer Council is hoping the day will have raised more than $3 million across New South Wales for its projects. Flu hits the Border By ERIN SOMERVILLE

BORDER residents have been among the hardest hit in this year’s influenza season. The Albury region has so far recorded the highest number of flu notifications for the season in the Murrumbidgee Local Health District, with 19 cases being confirmed. The number of cases in the Border area is expected to be much higher however, according to Director for Public Health for Murrumbidgee and Southern NSW Local Health District Tracey Oakman. “We are certainly seeing an increase in notified cases,” she said.

“A lot of people do not get tested with the flu, though,” she said. Albury emergency departments have seen an increase in cases, Ms Oakman confirmed. The region is following the rampant influenza trend that is occuring right across New South Wales. The latest Influenza Surveillance Report released from NSW Health this month shows flu cases in 59 NSW emergency departments had dramatically spiked compared to the previous four years. It showed that by 10 August, the index increase for influenza-like illness presenting in emergency

departments was 45.1. This rate is well above the flu season threshold of just 15, which was crossed back on 1 July. Spring may be just around the corner, but local pharmacists say the symptoms of this year’s flu strain have taken their toll on residents. “It has been a bad year for flu, we have had lots of customers in with it,” Terry White pharmacist Maree Harper said. “This year it seems the cold and flu has hung on a little bit longer, with symptoms lasting for up to two weeks.” “It seems this year’s flu has been

a hard one to shake.” Flu cases being identified in Albury are the H3N2 strain, which particularly targets the elderly, and the H1N1 strain, known as pandemic flu. Both strains are included in the flu vaccine. Ms Oakman said Albury hospitals were not being overwhelmed by flu cases, but residents should take action in preventing the spread of the virus. Those suffering from influenza are encouraged to stay at home to stop its spread, cough and sneeze into a tissue, elbow, or hand, and to regularly wash their hands.

Ella's the youngest, with the mostest By ERIN SOMERVILLE ELLA MacLean may have been the youngest contender at this year’s Country Girl Australia preliminary heat, but she certainly made a model impression. The 14-year-old Albury beauty was chosen from 70 applicants to compete in Wagga Wagga over the weekend. While Ella did not get a place in the heat, she stood her ground against her 30 competitors, who ranged up to 24 in age. She said the experience was a very positive one. "I really got to experience the catwalk and get my confidence up," she said. "I made a lot of friends." The contest was rigorous, with the girls spending hours learning how to walk on the catwalk and pose. "It was hard to get the timing right on the catwalk and learning not to go too fast," she said. "It was hard doing doubles too and keeping up with each other." The contestants then spent up to five hours getting their hair and

Firies fire up FIREFIGHTERS were called to a fire on Breen Street in Lavington on Monday evening. Fire crews received a call at 5.07pm that a five-metre by five-metre shed was alight. The crew was on the scene seven minutes later, and managed to contain and extinguish the blaze quickly before it threatened surrounding homes. No-one was injured during the incident.

make-up done before the 6pm red carpet arrival at Wagga’s International Hotel. Ella chose local make-up artist Lindy Lou to help her achieve the right look for the event. Dresswear, swimwear, and career girl for the over 16-year-olds were all categories of the Country Girl competition. Ella began modelling two years ago for TAFE photography students, and her passion for it stemmed from there. She has not been discouraged from modelling after she failed to secure a place on the weekend. "I really just wanted to do it to build up my confidence," she said. "Hair and make-up also takes so long, so it is exciting to see what I look like at the end." Ella is now looking forward to competing in the state final of Junior Miss Teen Australia in October. Local girls wanting to compete in next’s year Country Girl Australia can visit www.misscountrygirlaustralia.com.au, and you can visit their YouTube channel - C Girl TV, for industry information.

Nappies restore a little dignity

Bazaar gets outgrown By ERIN SOMERVILLE

By ERIN SOMERVILLE WHEN Tamara Coan lost her 18-weekold daughter Torrence-Lee in 2005, she learned of the challenges many parents face during the heartbreaking experience of stillbirth. “When I had my little girl, I realised I had nothing,” she said. “I had to create my own memories and had to find something to hold onto.” Nine years later, and now the proud mother of two children, Ms Coan is helping the parents of stillborn babies through Angel Baby Nappies. The project provides dignity nappies for babies who are born sleeping, and are made in pairs. One dignity nappy is given to the baby to wear, while the other is given to parents to keep in memory of their child. The gesture means a lot to parents, with reports of some famlies being left with only a towel or Chux wipes to cover their babies in the past. Ms Coan, who only took up sewing three years ago, now spends time almost every day helping parents she has never met out of the goodness of her own heart. This year alone, she has created 672 sets of dignity nappies using her own time and material. Miss Coan said Angel Baby Nappies had helped her with her own grieving process. “I know the pain and grief one can go through, and since then I have dedicated myself to helping other parents through their grieving process,” she said. “The wonderful lady behind the idea of these nappies name is Tania.

Tamara Coan with just a handful of the hundreds of dignity nappies she has created. Photo: ERIN SOMERVILLE “She started Angel Baby Nappies to help parents through their greiving process, even if it is only something little it means a lot.” Angel Baby Nappies provides dignity nappies in all colours and sizes, from babies to 18 weeks through to 36 weeks. Ms Coan is now calling on all who stitch as well as helpers to help add a little bit of light to families who have lost so much. The charity Sew-A-Thon for Angel Baby Nappies will be held at Hume Public School Hall, Lavington on Sunday 31 August from 10am to 3pm. “Our goal is to make as many pairs as we can for hospitals all around Australia, there are a lot of hospitals currently that are without them and are desperately

help out,” Mrs Mercer said. When the sisters took over the business in 2008, pre-loved items were the focal point of the bazaar, however the expanding needs of families now means there is a lot more on offer. Safety gadgets for babies and demonstrations, fitness classes for mums, and homemade wares are all now a big drawcard for the event. “It used to just be about babies, but now if it is child and pregnancy-related we’ve got it.” The owners say the bazaar is one of the biggest of its kind outside of capital cities, and are regularly fielding calls from parents as far as Queensland who are looking to follow Albury Wodonga’s Babies Bazaar lead. Despite the bazaar’s growing success, Mrs Mercer says she and her sister are just doing their best to help out local families. “We are just a bunch of mums trying to give back to our community,” she said. Babies Bazaar will be open at Major League Indoor Sports and Functions Centre on 30 August, from 9am until noon.

JUST like a child, Albury Wodonga’s Babies Bazaar has quickly grown up before its owners’ eyes. In just six years, the quarterly event that specialises in pre-loved and hand-crafted baby goods continued to burst out of the seams of smaller venues, before finally finding a comfortable fit at Major League Indoor Sports and Functions Centre. Owners and sisters Mellany Mercer and April Schubert aren’t suprised at how big the bazaar has become, saying it reflects the needs and challenges many parents face today. “There was always space for it to grow out of the need parents have,” Mrs Mercer said. “Children grow out of their clothes so quickly.” “It can be very expensive for parents now.” The growing number of grandparents also visiting the bazaar reflects the changing nature of childcare across the nation. “We are getting a lot of aunties and grandparents looking for that affordable cot or change table to

needing them,” Ms Coan said. “My children’s principal Mr Graham at Hume Primary School has very nicely donated his time and school hall for the day so that we can make this charity event into a big community event instead of a small event.” The nappies will be sent to Wollongong, where Angel Baby Nappies is based, and distributed to hospitals in need. The charity is also in need of material, white thread, people with ironing boards, irons, pens, scissors, refreshments, and sewing machine and monetary donations. For more information, contact Tamara on 0434 526 867 or mumof22010@live. com.

April Schubert, Luke Schubert, Kurt Schubert, Daniel Schubert, Alisha Schubert, Jessica Mercer, Mellany Mercer and Anna Mercer look forward to this week's Baby Bazaar.

Ned Kelly link to Argentina By ERIN SOMERVILLE WHAT do Australia and Argentina have in common? When the Albury Wodonga News Weekly put this question to the visiting Argentinian Ambassador Pedro Raul Villagra-Delgado last week, he gave a suprising answer. "We have connections with Ned Kelly," he proudly pointed out. Indeed, it was the high-tech Argentine Forensic Anthroplogy Team who helped Australia identify the remains of Ned Kelly through a long-distance relative in 2011, closing one of the country’s biggest mysteries. But the connections between the countries are not limited to bushrangers, as the Member for Indi Cathy McGowan highlighted during the amabassador’s visit to the electorate on Thursday.

"We have similar geography, big regional areas, and were setlled by Europeans," she said. "In north-east Victoria, the link into (Argentina) is there, we tend to look north for trade, but we have that similar connection and are in the same hemisphere." Now the two leaders are hoping to take advantage of their similarities and open more opportunities for business and education. During the ambassador's time in the electorate, he visited Wilson Transformer Company, Myrtleford Butter, and Australian Textile Mills to strengthen ties, investigate good manufacturing and agricultural practices, and expand trade opportunities. A stop over at La Trobe University was also an important feature on his itinerary. The potential to open study links be-

tween Australia and Argentina, which offers free university education, would be an exciting and positive move, Head of Campus Dr Guinever Threlkeld said. "Students and researchers would be very open to Argentinian exchange," she said. "We both have strengths in biotechnology and agriculture." "Education outside the borders is very important." With the regions also sharing very similar agricultural practices, Ms McGowan predicts the Indi and Argentinian ties will only continue to grow. "Albury Wodonga is already a great exporter that has a large amount going overseas," she said. "In terms of trade, it is growing a lot." Mr Villagra-Delgado expects he will be returning to Indi in the near-future. "It is such a beautiful area," he said.

100 up after hiccup By ERIN SOMERVILLE FOR a while, it appeared that Albury’s Red Cross Branch wouldn’t be around to celebrate its 100th birthday. After 89 years of giving back to the community, the ailing branch was closed in 2003, and the city of Albury lost one of its many great assets after the regional office then moved to Wagga Wagga. Its absence left a noticeable hole in the community that couldn’t be replaced. With the determined rallying of some passionate residents during the Red Cross’ eight-year absence, Albury welcomed back its beloved branch in 2011. Now Albury’s Red Cross is ready to celebrate its hard-earned milestone. “It was really exciting,” president of Albury Red Cross Branch Christine Mooney said. “We were amazed at how the communtiy felt to have the Red Cross back in town.” Albury’s Red Cross branch began when guns started firing across the globe in 1914, signalling the start of World War I. All of a sudden, Australians were called to arms by a world that had always seemed so far away, and all hands of all ages were needed to help the young nation survive its first greatest test. Albury’s branch was instrumental in providing meals for troops, dishing up around 10,000 hot dinners as the boys rollled through on the trains towards the harsh-reality of war. The organisation has continued giving ever since. After World War I, the branch was left homeless, and was invited to use the Country Women’s Association Kiewa Street headquarters that was built in 1934. By 1938, as European clouds of war darkened Australian’s horizon, Albury’s Red Cross ramped up their actions and was offered the Town Hall by the local council to run their operations. As World War II thundered on, local residents attended the Red Cross’s home nursing lectures and war drills, before it established its own emergency hospital on Swift Street. Volunteers helped many of the patients that were being transported

From a different world By ERIN SOMERVILLE WHEN 96-year-old Kit Ley first joined the Country Women’s Association, the Murray Valley Highway was still gravel, World War II had just finished, and the way of life for women was very different. Now, 66 years later, Ms Ley remains a firm member of the CWA. On Friday, she attended CWA Wodonga’s 80th birthday, and told Albury Wodonga News Weekly why she continued to value the organisation so much. “I first really joined for companionship, 66 years ago in the Kiewa Valley, it was not long after the war, and things were pretty grim, she said. “I liked the people, and there were a lot of good resolutions that came from Kiewa to help women. “To be part of it, you have to be interested in politics. Ms Ley has made life-long friendships through the association, as have most of the women who attended the 80th celebration of the Wodonga branch on Friday. Mary Smith, who has been with Wodonga CWA for 39 years, says the organisation is firmly based on friendship and has helped many members in testing times. “I have had their support through difficult times in my life. While the CWA membership across NSW has dropped over the years, Ms Smith said it was great to see younger generations becoming members to give the organisation a new lease of life. “Life is changing and society is changing, she said. “We felt like Wodonga CWA would be coming to a close at one point as a lot of us were in our eighties, but when new ladies came to us, it gave us new life. The first meeting of Wodonga CWA branch was held on August, 20 1934 in the Wodonga Masonic Hall. Only seven months later, the branch

Kit Ley has been involved with the CWA for 66 years. Inset: Wodonga CWA’s Coral McCreadie, secretary Elizabeth Harvey, Clare Chick, and president Nerida Scalzo celebrate the association’s 80th birthday. Picture: ERIN SOMERVILLE During World War II, members were very busy making food parcels for Britain, knitting rugs for British children, being involved with sheepskin vests for overseas canteen orders for servicemen, and knitted garments for poor children in Britain through the Save the Children Fund. These children were remembered with parcels at Christmas and on birthdays. There were many letters of appreciation received by the branch for their efforts. Entertainment and hospitality were also provided for army personnel at Bonegilla. Since then, their efforts with groups such as the Children’s Hospital, Hilltop,

established a baby health centre in Wodonga, and an infant welfare committee was formed. After extensive fund-raising through balls, dances, card parties, a Queen Carnival, race meetings, concerts, and street stalls, the Wodonga CWA and infant welfare committee had raised enough funds by May 1937 to begin building a meeting place. On 7 October, 1937, their home on Wodonga’s High Street opened. Over the years, CWA Wodonga has been involved in hundreds of community charities and projects, and also helping on an international level.

Travellers Aid, Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and Home Help are just some of the many organisations that the branch has supported. Wodonga Branch currently has 21 members who actively fund-raise each year for various projects. While the CWA Wodonga has done so much for the community, current President Nerida Scalzo said it was vital members all looked after each other. “The main focus of our branch is friendship and support of each other, especially our older members, she said. “ We all enjoy each other’s company and have a lot of fun.

Wodonga Senior Secondary College principal Vern Hilditch said many former students appreciated seeing their old school buildings for a trip down memory lane. “I have done a lot of reunions over the years and the thing students want is to reminisce about the old buildings, he said. “I am hoping it is a day people can come along and remember and reflect, and it really holds value. Past and present students, along with interested community members are invited back to the school for a grand reunion on Saturday 30 August from 10am to 4pm. One of the events at the reunion will be “Famous Five on the Couch featuring the much-loved teachers and staff Eleanor Nicholson, Barry Jackson, Bob McRae, Steve Fox, and Sue Bell. Together, they have over 300 years experience, many of those years at former Wodonga High School. Many stories and laughs are guaranteed to be had at the reunion.

Bluesman Jimmy Reed just about sums it up: ‘Bright Lights, Big City.’ and video playback, the latter with the vehicle at a standstill and the handbrake on. Display Audio also integrates Apple’s Siri reducing the time the driver needs to take their eyes off the road. Compatible iPhone users, via Bluetooth, can operate Siri with voice command by holding down the Talk button on the steering wheel. By downloading an app, satellite navigation can be stored on a smartphone as opposed to the hardware of an in-car system. This sets the user free to have a navigation system in the car or elsewhere, providing more mobility. Honda has upgraded its 1.5-litre four-cylinder i-VTEC petrol engine and mated it with a five-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission to reduce fuel consumption and improve performance. Producing maximum power of 88 kW at 6600rpm and maximum torque of 145 Nm at 4600rpm, fuel economy, says Honda, has improved by 12 per cent over the outgoing model for the CVT and 8 per cent for the manual. An Eco Assist function helps the driver keep fuel consumption to a minimum by monitoring driving style using the outer ring of the speedometer. A blue light changes to green as fuel efficiency is increased by the driving mode. Further help comes in the shape of an Econ system which is connected at the push of a button. This remaps the drive-bywire throttle system to maxi-

mise fuel economy. Active safety is covered by ABS braking, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Emergency Braking, Vehicle Stability Assist with Traction Control and Hill Start Assist. An emergency stop signal flashes the rear lights under hard braking, warning following drivers. Honda’s long established ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure provides occupant protection in a variety of crash conditions, along with six airbags and front seat whiplash mitigating head restraints. A reversing camera has three modes - normal, wide angle and plan view and is available with dynamic or static guidelines. A roomy cabin puts occupants at ease for the test vehicle take-off, which was smooth enough in Normal mode. However, the engine struggled in Econ under hard acceleration. Up to speed the engine appeared to be holding back, which, of course, it was in a bid to save fuel. Under test the City recorded fuel consumption of 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres on the motorway, 10 litres per 100 kilometres around town. In Econ consumption was 6.8 in the suburbs and again 4.5 on the open road, so the Econ mode certainly works well. Model range City VTi 1.5-litre fivedoor hatch: $15,990 (manual), $17,990 (automatic); City VTiL 1.5-litre five-door hatch: $20,990 (automatic).

LIVEABILITY is often bandied about to describe the quality of being comfortable and convenient to live in, especially when defining towns and cities. The word could well be applied to Honda’s new City. The new City is a stylish light sedan that delivers value for money through fuel economy and top-line specification, the latter the result of the Japanese manufacturer trawling the world to discover how owners use their vehicles, what they like and dislike, how they live and what their future plans are. A common theme emerged - their reliance on smartphones, which travel with them constantly, hence the truly integrated experience on offer with the new City. The car comes powered by Honda’s upgraded 1.5-litre iVTEC petrol engine in three versions - Vti manual and automatic and VTi-L automatic coming to market from $15,990 to $21,885, plus on-road costs. The City follows fashion with the sedan curving front to back in a way that copies coupe shapes. The nose-down front emphasises the vehicle width with an aero-style bumper and incorporated air inlets. A strong so-called character line connects front and rear and is distinguishable, says the maker, equally in bright sunlight or cloudy conditions. Flared rear wheel arches add substance to the profile while the rear lamp clusters are brought together by a chrome licence plate surround. The spacious passenger cabin is a place where the latest technology takes a prominent position in the form of Honda’s state-of-the-art Display Audio and Multi Information Display. Here connectivity is king. Central to the Honda Display Audio system is the seveninch colour touch screen which is centrally located on the dashboard in easy reach of the driver and front-seat passenger. It enables Bluetooth connectivity for Apple and Android smartphones, including audio streaming, plus HDMI audio

BY STEVE WHITEHOUSE THE sun is shining and the days are getting longer and warmer, filled with the promise of what’s to come. It’s been an exciting time of the year in the motorcycle industry as the various distributors start to release information and new models for next year. I was fortunate to have recently attended Yamaha’s dealer meeting where they released information on a couple of exciting new models and teased us with information about more models to be announced before the year’s end. What they have announced is exciting. There’s a brand new three wheel scooter called a Tricity. Bradley was fortunate enough to have a short test ride and remarked on how safe and easy it was to ride with the new design giving a much better ride and stability on a range of wet and varied surfaces. A new learner approved Torque sports naked bike the MT07, which I have to say looks hot and is priced very competitively. Yamaha are claiming the best power to weight perfor-

There’s also been updates across the motocross range and a new six seater utility vehicle called a Viking VI. And with more models to be announced by Kawasaki, Suzuki and Triumph by the year’s end, next year looks very exciting, and while I’m at it I would be wrong not to mention the recent release of the Triumph Street III 660 LAM. Triumph’s first venture into the learner-

approved market has met with rave reviews in the motorcycle press and impressed us at the shop. A great looking bike with the performance and safety to match. And let’s not forget as we race towards the football finals, its Henty Field Days time again next month, a fantastic event which showcases so much products it’s hard to comprehend the variety of products you can see out there. I hope you are all riding and enjoying the change of season. Safe riding until next month.

Last week, CSU launched the CSU Greenhouse Star Rating stickers, in a bid to drive home the university’s committment to sustainability and carbon emissions reduction. Similar to energy rating stickers on household appliances, the CSU Greenhouse Star Rating stickers show a rating from one to five (five being the most environmentally friendly). The ratings are calculated using the Australian Government’s Green Vehicle Guide.

Hotel’s inviting Murray setting WITH its beautiful rustic interiors, crackling open fires, and the warmest of company partnered with the finest cold beers, there is no better way to see out the last of winter’s chilly days than at the Jingellic Bridge Hotel. Its prime position on the Murray River makes it a must-visit venue in the summer, but owner Ian Clarke says the Bridge Hotel still remains somewhat of a winter hidden gem. “The winter landscape is amazing, and nestled right on top of the Murray, it is very comfortable and relaxing,” Mr Clarke said. With spring lurking just around the corner, now is the time to make the most of both seasons in the gorgeous contryside with a relaxing weekend trip to the Bridge Hotel. The hotel offers clean, comfortable, country accommodation for all tastes. Established in 1925, carved over the years by local character and quirks (don’t forget to ask the friendly staff about the money on the ceiling), and proudly taking the title of the pub that sits closest to the great Murray River, you will be hard pressed finding a more authentic high-country experience. “It is a beautiful place to be,” Mr Clarke said. “We offer everything, and it really is an iconic country pub.” The Bridge Hotel is perfect for couples and families, and serves as

a great base for those wanting to explore nearby areas such as Albury Wodonga, Tumbarumba, Corryong, and the beautiful Snowy Mountain region. Guests wanting a quieter weekend will find it easy to stay put and pass time relaxing in the comfort of the Bridge Hotel’s warm and friendly atmosphere. The pub’s pristine location on the Murray means casting out the fishing line, enjoying local birdlife, or using the boat ramp to go canoeing is never a problem.Whatever guests decide to do with their days, most will agree that the Bridge Hotel is the ideal place on the Murray to be replenished. The hotel’s A la Carte lunch and dinner bistro offers delicious, varied, and hearty meals that will sate the appetite of the hungriest and fussiest of guests. All this can be washed down with one of six frosty beers that are available on tap every day. There is room for the whole family at the establishment’s three bedroom cabin, which has two bedrooms with queen beds, and one bedroom with two singles. A balcony overlooking the mighty Murray River guarantees you stunning and tranquil views during your entire stay for the affordable price of $160 for a couple per night, and $20 extra for each guest beyond that. Guests can stay in a smaller two-

Hearing awareness week

Watch for the age-old signs By TANIA PHILLIPS SADLY, hearing loss occurs with ageing for many people. For every person over 65 years age, one in three has a significant loss of hearing. By 75 years of age, it’s two in three. There are pointers to a developing hearing loss. Family members might become frustrated because they mishear conversation at the local coffee shop or club. They complain they can’t hear if background noise is present. Grandparents say they cannot understand their grandchildren. Family complain the TV volume is too high. Tinnitus (head noises) is often the first sign of hearing loss. Ageing, family genetics, recreational or workplace noise exposure, viral infections, diabetes and arthritis are just some of the conditions that can damage the inner ear, resulting in tinnitus and deafness. Modern hearing aids have improved greatly over the past decade. Noise reduction systems, coupled with multiple microphones help the hearing aid user focus on the speech they wish to hear, improving family, social and workplace interaction.

Hearing programs for particular listening environments adapt automatically in the hearing aid. All this technology is controlled by a microchip within the hearing aid. Albury Audio Diagnostics is Albury-Wodonga’s longest established independent Audiology and Hearing Aid Clinic. Audiologist, Stephen Jacobs established the practice in 1995. Albury Audio Diagnostics is a member of Independent Audiology Australia, a group of audiologist-owned clinical and hearing aid practices, committed to client-focused hearing care, with access to all major hearing aid manufacturers. They provide free trial of the lastest hearing aid technologies. Contact Albury Audio Diagnostics for further information. Albury Audio Diagnostics is accredited by the Commonwealth’s Office of Hearing Services to provide hearing services to eligible pensioners and veterans. The clinic is also accredited by WorkSafe Victoria and WorkCover NSW to provide hearing assessments and if required, hearing aids to workers with noise-induced hearing loss.

If your hearing is going, there will generally be warning signs. 126248

Be alert to hearing loss RECOGNISING a hearing loss in yourself, or someone you know, is the first step toward improving the situation. As hearing loss can gradually develop over several years, most people are not aware of the extent of their loss until family or friends bring it to their attention. Life Style Hearing is Wodonga’s only permanent hearing clinic. The clinic has now been operating since January 2005 and is soon to celebrate its 10year anniversary. As hearing health care professionals, Selina Gan and her team recognise the implica-

tions of untreated hearing loss on an individual’s life, from avoidance of social situations and reduced job performance, to loneliness, irritability and anger. They offer a wide variety of hearing services including full, comprehensive hearing tests, fitting of hearing aids, hearing aid repairs, batteries and now they can provide safe wax removal services. Life Style Hearing is accredited to provide free hearing services and free hearing aids to eligible pensioners and DVA gold card holders. Their goal is to provide you with the best possible

hearing care based upon your individual needs. If you or a family member have concerns about hearing loss, please contact them to schedule an appointment for a hearing evaluation. With their expertise and the use of advanced hearing aids and computerised technology, they have the ability to help you hear what you’ve been missing. Life Style Hearing can help you. For further information call 02 6056 4440 or visit the website at lifestylehearing.net.au

Fixing hearing loss earlier on of the world, including Tibet, Cambodia, Ethiopia, and Nauru. Liz Lockett takes on the role of audiologist, and has worked in the industry since 2007, holding degrees in speech and hearing science, early childhood education, and a Masters in clinical audiology from the University of Melbourne. Kate Rixon completes the team as office manager, and with over 10 years of hearing industry experience ensures clients have a smooth and professional experience at Amplify. The team looks forward to celebrating their first anniversary in October, and say their first year with the Albury community has been a success, providing a local and independent service. As part of Hearing Awareness Week, Amplify will be offering free adult hearing tests, free advice, free referrals, and free hearing aid trials. Amplify Hearing and Diagnostics is also accredited by the Office of Hearing Services to provide free hearing services to eligible pensioners and veterans. It is a shame that 20 per cent of people needing a hearing aid actually use one, as modern hearing aids have come a long way in size and technology. Now is the time to do something about your hearing. For friendly, local service, book your appointment with Amplify Hearing and Diagnostics at 549 Macauley Street, Albury, or phone 0260 217 500. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Home visits are available by appointment. The office is closed between 12.30pm and 1pm daily.

"CAN YOU PLEASE REPEAT THAT?" If this is something you find yourself saying a lot, it might be time to get your hearing checked. Hearing problems don’t discriminate, and anyone at any age is susceptible. With one in six Australians suffering from hearing loss, the team down at Amplify Hearing and Diagnostics know how important it is to take care of your ears. "It affects all ages," audiometrist Emma Burdziejko said. "We see babies from nine months old through to the elderly." Ms Burdziejko said untreated hearing issues can lead to more serious medical and social issues. "If hearing loss is left untreated, people run the risk of problems with communication." "It can lead to frustration, anger, and even depression. "It can be quite isolating, especially for the elderly." If you find it hard to understand someone, have to regularly turn up the television, or just think something is not quite right, the team at Amplify are here to help. The team offers a range of expertise and experience, ensuring clients receive a high quality of care and treatment. The team includes Ms Burdziejko, who has 17 years of industry experience and spent a decade as a qualified practitioner, holding a diploma of hearing device prescription and evaluation. Spiritual healing from the beyond ance out this year, Charmaine is as down to earth as they come and connects on a very real level with her loyal audiences. And more than just uniting people with the other side, Charmaine brings something unique through sharing her own personal tragedies. She draws on the wisdom she has learned from those experiences to offer practical steps on keeping your head above water after a heart-breaking death. “I get so much out of sharing messages with those searching for answers. If I can help one person in a small way, I have done my job,” she says. “Death often just doesn’t make sense, and we can get caught in focusing on the tragedy, rather than finding the reason to keep living. I think I help bridge that gap ... just a bit.” Charmaine’s own life has been littered with loss - losing many close family members including her four-year-old daughter, parents and brother. However, she said this had allowed her to take the journey she was on now and not only contact the spirit world but be

With her third book of guid-

MOVIE: The Inbetweeners 2 THERE is always a feeling of trepidation when a sequel is released. Heading in to see The Inbetweeners 2, the questions and cynicism set in my mind before the theatre lights were even dimmed. Will this be the film to kill off the beloved franchise faster than you can say Sex and the City 2? Is it possible to be as funny as the last one? Thankfully, this sequel managed to come away unscathed. It has been a while since I last laughed out loud in a movie, but I certainly made up for any long, lost giggles during this one. It is dirty, over-the-top, often-predictable, and down right disgusting at times, but it’s all the things that make the Inbetweeners so great. As the franchise dictates, male bonding and constant moments of gag-filled scenarios served as the plot’s skeleton, with the beautiful Australian scenery and an array of stereotyped characters helping to add some flesh. Two years after the boys learned lessons of love and life when they visited Greece in the first The Inbetweeners film, they waste no time in taking themselves on a spontaneous journey Down Under to visit Jay, who is there on a gap

year. When we learn that Jay is not exactly living the high-life that he depicted through a cleverly-constructed sequence, the boys decide to make the most of their time in Oz and become ‘travellers’ (definitely not tourists). From there, the film takes us on a bawdy journey of girl-chasing, geekiness, and grotesque scenarios as they make their way across Australia. We watch and cheer on Will trump longhaired hippy-wannabes with his cynicism, Simon attempt to escape the clutches of his psychotic girlfriend, Jay search for a long-lost love, and Neil be....well Neil. While the plot is reminiscent of the movie’s predecessor, even following the 'trip abroad’ scenario, the strong connection among the boys and the justice they continue to do to their characters help prop up the sequel. The film even touches on some darker moments of sentiment that are not often familiar with the franchise, giving it some depth beyond the poo and sex gags. As a fan of the franchise, I left the film with a sense of closure and contentment, and a feeling that there most likely will not be an Inbetweeners 3. But then again, you can never predict what the four British lads will get up to next.

Sound of extinction By GEOFF HABERECHT

The story partly coincides with a market that has found us - the common story of The Man Cave and a sound system to do justice to Cold Chisel and AC/ DC is very well catered for. The other clients include our near-retirement women, wanting to hear The Bee Gees loud and full, like they used to be able to. For most compact systems, it is Mission: Impossible, as there is little chance of a small system conveying the performance of a large speaker enclosure. In the 1990s and 2000s, Bose captured the imagination with a revolutionary product called the acoustimass system. It was a product that helped shape the market of today. For a long period they were unchallenged, up until about 10 years ago when the new digital age hit. Since then we have wit-

THE end of the Lavington Sports Club is a sad occasion, albeit the best was some time ago. In the 1970s and 1980s, the disco scene was alive and well and vinyl records were at their peak. We helped introduce a disco at the club with our part-time worker from the record bar Maurie Laughlan. His real nine-to-five job was then at the ANZ bank but Maurie also found a niche at the Wodonga Hotel, alternating between the two. With the name Mad Maurie, he lit up the sports club, making it the venue to be at. It was not long after that his ANZ career gave way to full time DJ-ing. He stayed working in the Record Bar part-time with me for many years after that.

nessed some marvellous innovations from many companies. It is now possible to have near invisible music options throughout the home and as loud and proud as you like it, if your wallet allows you. This market, while successfully pioneered by Sonos, is now being challenged by many up and coming products from Denon, Marantz, Samsung, Onkyo, Cambridge Audio, Pioneer, and many more. The other iconic club, the North Albury Sports Club, now comes under the same cloud of extinction. Being a regular diner out there, this has been one of the better watering holes for good feeds on the border. It is probably the best kept secret, but needs a little more patronage so they don’t end up in a Howard Jones book of the great past establishments.

Homes&Property Albury Wodonga

Welcome way FROM the moment you pull up at 7 Mashie Way, Wodonga, you get the immediate feeling that there is a special treat in store for you. And you aren’t let down as you make your way along the paved pathway through the garden via an attractive portico to the front door. The entry opens on to a tiled entry that in turn opens on to a spacious and comfortable formal lounge. The kitchen offers an island bench that contributes to efficiency of producing a meal, in that everything is at your fingertips including a pantry, an electric bench oven with a gas cook top and a dishwasher that will help eliminate those “I did them last night” discussions that families sometimes have. The person cooking won’t be excluded from the conversation as the kitchen overlooks the family room. The formal dining room is a nook style arrangement that adjoins both the lounge and kitchen. The master bedroom at the front of the home measures about 3.7m x 3.5m, in imperial language this approximates at 12 ft x 11ft 6 inches, and has plenty of wardrobe space and the bathroom as a semi ensuite.

Wodonga,

The other two bedrooms are similar in size at 3.5m x 3.2m and both have built-in robes. One of the things that contributes greatly to the warmth of this home is the careful selection of soft furnishings be they floor coverings, light fittings or window furnishings. The home is serviced by a ducted cooling system in the warmer months. The home is meticulously maintained with beautiful lawns and gardens as are the neighbouring homes in this popular established residential development. The outdoor living area is quite spacious and skirts the family room to the dining room, thus giving an opportunity to incorporate the formal with informal living. A drive-through double garage leads to a 6m x 3m workshop with 2 phase power. The property is surrounded by low maintenance Colorbond fencing. Number 7 Mashie Way is on the market at $309,000 and will suit a variety of buyers be they families, retirees investors or someone who would like to be close to the Golf Club..

THE final three months of the 2013-’14 financial year were a time of consolidation for house prices across regional Victoria. While growth for the quarter was relatively small - an increase of 0.8 per cent to a median house price of $327,000 this took the total median price rise for the financial year to 4.1 per cent. REIV’s analysis of home sales in regional areas, according to property type and size, shows that the biggest growth in the most recent quarter was in the price of three-bedroom homes - up 2.4 per cent to $295,000. The next highest growth was for four-bedroom homes in regional Victoria, up by 1.2 per cent for the quarter to a median price of $415,000. As usual, there was substantial variation across the state, with regional Victoria not a single market but comprised of many individual markets with a range of factors - including the type and quality of housing stock, local employment opportunities, and proximity to the city or the sea - having a bearing on house prices. For example, in the ColacOtway area the $280,000 median price was up 8.3 per cent on the previous quarter, and there was four per cent growth to $540,000 in the Macedon Ranges, with these areas remaining in demand from Melburnians seeking a sea change or a tree change. Meanwhile, each of the major regional centres remained in positive territory: 0.3 per cent growth to a median of $301,000

for the City of Ballarat; 1.5 per cent to $335,000 for the City of Greater Bendigo; and 0.2 per cent for the City of Greater Geelong. But in each case these figures represented solid growth over the financial year - Ballarat 3.9 per cent, Bendigo 7.9 per cent and Geelong 6.7 per cent. In some other regions, price growth was slower this quarter but remained strong for the year. For example, in South Gippsland growth for the quarter was just 1.3 percent, but for the financial year it was 10.3 per cent; and in Wodonga, quarterly growth was just 0.4 per cent, but for the year it was 11.6 per cent. There were also some areas

where prices appear to be improving. In the City of La Trobe, median prices were 1.5 per cent lower over the past 12 months. But the recovery appears to be underway, with median prices across the region increasing by 1.3 per cent in the three months to 30 June. These variations illustrate why researching an area, its housing stock, opportunities and property prices are so important before buying. While the overall regional figures offer an interesting comparison with Melbourne and an indication of the savings to be made by moving to the country, much depends on where you buy.

Auctions up in regional Victoria MELBOURNE has been dubbed Australia’s auction capital, but in regional Victoria selling at auction has been less popular, with the vast majority of homes sold by private sale. This year, though, that seems to have changed. The number of auctions held in regional Victoria has increased by 38 per cent in the year to date - with 1424 auctions held, compared with 1034 in the same period last year. Sales at auction tend to increase during periods of significant price growth, with sellers encouraged by the high prices achieved by others at auction. Private sales take place where an extended sale and marketing period is preferred, rather than the compressed timescale of an auction. They allow buyers time to view the house and consider the purchase, and tend to be more popular in slower market times or in harder-toreach locations. Not surprising, then, that regional centres rather than small country towns featured in the list of top auction locations in regional Victoria. Echuca, with 60 auctions, topped the list as the location with the most auctions in regional Victoria. It also achieved a solid auction clearance rate - that is, the number of homes going to auction that sold. Echuca’s clearance rate of 46 per cent was

close to the regional Victorian average rate of 51 per cent. The next three “top auction” locations were all in Geelong. Belmont was in second place with 46 auctions, Geelong West third with 47 auctions and Newtown fourth with 41 auctions. While all three trailed Echuca in terms of the number of auctions, each delivered a clearance rate above 68 per cent, well ahead of the average for regional Victoria. All three areas have seen significant gentrification and a booming cafe culture, making them increasingly attractive to first-time buyers and families. East Geelong was also in the top 10, at sixth, with 32 auctions and a clearance rate in line with Belmont, Geelong West and Newtown. Mildura was fifth on the list with 37 auctions and a 49 per cent clearance rate. Also in the top 10 were Warrnambool (32 auctions, 31 per cent), Wodonga (32 auctions, 50 per cent) and Shepparton (31 auctions, 48 per cent). And while Ballarat Central, with 10 auctions, did not make it on to the top 10 list for regional Victoria it led the way with its clearance rate - an impressive 90 per cent this year. Says with SIMON CORR IF LAST weekend’s final Ovens and Murray home and away round is a pre-curser to the finals series that lies ahead we are in for some stunning entertainment. Brendan ‘Fev’ Fevola re-captured everyone’s attention with a monstrous bag of 16 goals, Setanta O’hAilpin kicked 100 for the year and we had a nail-biter at the John Flower Oval. Unfortunately for outgoing Bulldog playing coach Ben Hollands, his brave team couldn’t quite get over the line to give him the send off he deserved. It was, however, a huge effort by the Dogs in a game that had all the recipe ingredients of a final. The Dogs’ pressure was immense and the home crowds support deafening as they willed them over the line but to the Rovers’ credit they held on to book themselves yet another finals campaign. North Albury finished of the season with another win against an in-form Myrtleford. The Hoppers are clearly the best team out of the five and many would argue they are even better than a couple of sides in it! Unfortunately for the Hoppers, their impressive against-all-odds season was lost a little in the announcement that their controversial coach Jason Akermanis will face an investigation into cyber bullying. Whilst not privy to the full details of the accusation, I will say it is a timely reminder that we all remember we have certain responsibilities with the way we use social media. Lavington bounced back into the winners’ list with a 28-point win over fourth placed Corowa Rutherglen, with former AFL forward Justin Koschitzke kicking five for the Panthers. The Panthers will be pleased they take winning form into this Saturday’s qualifying final against the reigning Premiers Yarrawonga. The game to be held at Wangaratta’s WJ Finlay Oval will be a beauty after the two could only be separated by 12 points in their most recent

meeting just two weeks ago. Yarrawonga were victorious on that occasion largely due to an impressive 30 minute cameo by one Brendan Fevola. Fev tore the game open with explosive leading, clean marking and his trademark pin point accuracy around the goals. His likely re-match with Panthers playing coach James Saker will be fascinating. Saker has done exceptionally well on Fevola, and every other forward in the competition, for that matter. His ability to play off his opponents is massive as his run and carry, combined with his penetrating kicking quickly turns defence into attack. Saker will need to rely on his midfield and fellow defenders putting sufficient pressure on the Pigeon ball carriers. If allowed space and freedom to dispose of the ball, the likes of Tim Cooper, Xavier Leslie and Craig Edie will ensure Fev gets some blue ribbon delivery. The strong form of Yarrawonga at the moment has me leaning towards them, however it is important to remember just two weeks ago the Panthers were the ladder leaders and have done very little wrong all year. This weekend’s other final will see Wangaratta Rovers meet Corowa - Rutherglen on a Sunday at Myrtleford’s McNamara Reserve. While these two teams aren’t really taking great form into the game, the fact is they have both earned their position and will be keen to capitalise on the opportunity. Corowa will head into the elimination final as favourites after easily accounting for the Rovers a few weeks ago. Its key forward Luke Gestier looms as a danger man although he is unlikely to get any favours from dominant Wang Rovers defender Tyson Hartwig. Daniel Archer will be the key for the Rovers at the other end of the ground and dry conditions could make him difficult to hold. The Rovers have bigger X-Factor for me in Archer, Sheehan, Hartwig and Carpenter and it is why I am thinking they will survive the do or die contest. All finals action will be broadcast live on 1494 2AY. MY SELECTIONS Lavington v YARRAWONGA Corowa - Rutherglen v WANG ROVERS
