Mr Locke said once the concern had been submitted, the user would receive an email saying it has been allocated to the relevant department and would again be notified when the issue has been finalised. When queried, the mayor said he was unsure of the cost to council to implement the app, but was confident it would “pay for itself in no time at all”.

Once the free app is downloaded, residents can report an issue by clicking on the ‘Fix It’ button and choosing from the list of categories - animal inquiry, website feedback, road inquiry, waste inquiry or others. REPORTING an issue to council while on the move has never been easier with the launch of the Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) app. The MY SDRC app allows residents to keep up-to-date with the latest council news, contact councillors with the touch of a button or flag a problem using the ‘Fix It’ feature. Additional functions include an alerts page, which will provide important information in the event of a disaster, information on job availabilities with council as well as quick access to council’s social media sites. Mayor Peter Blundell said one of council’s key focuses during this term of office was to better communicate with the community. “The app will not only provide residents with a one-stop shop access to basic council information, but can also keep people up-to-date on what is happening in our region,” he said. “I am sure people will appreciate the ease of reporting an issue to council on the spot as well as having quick access to the information the app provides. “SDRC systems officer Kieren Locke said SDRC was the first council in Queensland to introduce such a sophisticated and comprehensive app. “There are a few similar apps (used by other councils), but nothing this in-depth,” Mr Locke said.

Broad smiles for fair’s fun By TANIA PHILLIPS ALL the fun of the fair is coming to Warwick Christian College on Saturday afternoon for the Bargains and Busking Arts Fair at their Slade Campus, 70 Horseman Road. Principal Jenny Lang said the students, staff and parents had been reflecting upon last year’s extravaganza with the intention of topping it. “The enthusiasm the students are showing this week makes me proud to be a part of the college - a sense of togetherness and service,” Ms Lang said. Activities which bring about the buzz of the fair
since the event was postponed in March. There will be live performances during the day: Killarney Dance Studio, Highland Dancing, and our very own college band and choir, for whom the college extends special thanks for their contributions. New in 2014, the college will be opening its doors to the public to peruse student works and experience the classroom environment. By all accounts from those who attended last year, the Bargains, Busking and Art Fair was a big hit, and many people from the local community attended.

Ms Lang said the school community “is looking forward with anticipation at seeing visitors, families and friends of the college come along to enjoy an engaging afternoon, ending with a ‘bang’, with fireworks at 6.45pm”. Travel subsidy goes a long way TRUDGING from Stanthorpe to Toowoomba several times a week for chemotherapy can take its toll when physical reserves are already low. That’s what Mary Beach was forced to do after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012. But the Granite Belt resident was given a reprieve when she was given a helping hand by the State Government. The Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS) provides travel and accommodation assistance to patients, and in some cases carers, when the nearest medical specialist service is more than 50km away. “I had someone to drive me and we’d try to share the load,” Ms Beach said. “The travel scheme was great because it gave you something towards your fuel costs as well as the wear and tear on your car. “It meant that you could manage the travel without ruining the budget,” she said. Having finished regular treatment Ms Beach still needs to travel to Toowoomba several times per year for check-ups as well as preventative scans. Between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014, the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service (DDHHS) contributed more than $6 million, enabling more than 9790 Darling Downs and South Burnett residents to ac-

DDHHS chief executive Dr Peter Bristow said the five major reasons for travel from these areas included diagnostic radiology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, cardiology and general surgery. “Where possible, we try to provide services locally, however, in cases where it is necessary for patients to travel to larger
cities for more specialised treatment, the patient travel subsidy scheme is there to assist them,” he said. From 1 January 2013, the Queensland Government doubled the PTSS mileage subsidy rate from 15 cents to 30 cents per kilometre and the accommodation subsidy rate from $30 to $60 per person per night when staying in commercial accommodation.

By ALENA HIGGINS AFTER four long years of dreaming, planning and consulting, Warwick State High School has officially unveiled its new trade training centre. The state-of-the-art facility on the corner of Victoria and Guy streets will offer local state secondary students qualifications in agriculture, engineering and manufacturing - skills that are currently in short supply. Maranoa MP Bruce Scott, who was on hand to cut the red ribbon last Thursday, said Warwick was well-positioned to capitalise on the growth of agricultural export markets and Asian trade agreements, which is why local manual training facilities were needed. “I think for a period in our history we forgot about technical training and thought everyone must have a university degree,” Mr Scott said. “While that is important, trades are going to be fundamental to us in our communities if we are to make the most into the future.” Students from Warwick High, Clifton State High School, Killarney State School and Allora State School will have access to the expansive $3.5 million facility, which includes a separate science laboratory building to support food production. Mr Scott, who was representing parliamentary secretary to the Minister for Education, Senator Scott Ryan at the opening ceremony, said by “training your own” you had a better chance of retaining them. “(The entire school community)

He said at this stage TAFE lecturers would convene the classes, but staff members could step in to deliver the modules if TAFE was unable to. “Initially we’re going to take students that are engaged in agricultural programs here and expose them to the kinds of maintenance programs they need for small engines, a bit of welding, a bit of sheetmetal fabrication, those sorts of things that are all useful in a farming or agriculture sense,” Mr Hoger said.
ing SDRC received was a “very insignificant amount more” than last year, the absence of an increase to reflect population growth and CPI was a concern and something the Local Government Association “vigorously opposed”. “One problem is that these financial assistance grants used to represent two per cent of tax revenue raised by the Federal Government and they have now dropped to 0.8 per cent,” he said. “In three years there will be a significant shortfall of funding that would normally go to local government.” FAGs, which are paid through the states and untied in the hands of individual councils, are essential to provide a reasonable level of service and infrastructure to residents. “This is very significant fund-

ing to us and is something we do rely on, there is no doubt about that,” Cr Blundell said. He said while all levels of government realised the financial situation needed to be addressed, no tier wanted to bear the brunt of budget cuts. “It is very easy to say everyone else should give up their income, but the reality is everyone is getting less money,” Cr Blundell said. “What you will see is that it does restrict programs we would like to do, which means that in our community, if people want services they have been receiving to continue, they need to be contributing more to them.” Councils can apply for additional Federal Government assistance under the Roads to Recovery, Black Spot and Bridges Renewal programs.

THE Commonwealth Government has dished out its annual council grants with Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) pocketing $7,046,977 in discretionary funds. Mayor Peter Blundell said one third of the money would likely be spent on roads while the remainder would be absorbed into council’s operating budget for such activies as maintenance of regional swimming pools, art galleries and libraries. The contributions, some $127.3 million for Maranoa alone, have been marred this year amid news the indexation of local government financial assistance grants (FAGs) would be frozen for three years as the Abbott Government attempts to rein in the country’s escalating debt. Cr Blundell said while the fund-

TRANS Tasman rivalry was fierce at Morgan Park last weekend as Queensland and NSW battled it out against New Zealand for the prestigious Cooper Cup. Despite a high-speed display of horsemanship and racquet skills by the Kiwis, Queensland was too strong, winning the grand final on Sunday morning 21 goals to 14. Games under lights on both Friday and Saturday nights provided exciting polocrosse for spectators, despite wet weather causing boggy fields which mildly slowed down play. The Cooper Cup originated years ago as a reciprocal competition between Queensland and the Kiwis, with the venue alternating between the Sunshine State and New Zealand. This year’s competition included open men’s and development teams, giving younger players the opportunity to experience high level representative polocrosse. And they did not disappoint, with the Queensland development team causing a shock upset on Saturday night, beating the Queensland open team by six goals. As part of the weekend polocrosse extravaganza, 81 club teams from Queensland and NSW competed in a separate competition - the NTI Rose Bowl Championship Carnival. The club competition was made up of 56 Open, 12 Mixed and 13 Junior teams. The NTI Rose Bowl Championship Carnival was won this year by Tansey 1, which scored 20 goals against Warwick 1 on 10 goals.

Manager leaves council A SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council (SDRC) manager has jumped ship, taking on a director’s role at a neighbouring council. Tenterfield Shire Council (TSC) announced on Tuesday current SDRC manager of infrastructure Stephen Bell would take up the appointment of director of engineering services on 6 October. Mr Bell, who moved to Queensland for family reasons in August last year after working in Western Australia for 12 years, said
he “could not resist applying” when the director’s position became available. “Tenterfield is not an unfamiliar place for me,” he said. “It is a place that I can see has a positive outlook and a clear direction.” TSC mayor Peter Petty said the position was “keenly” contested with over 20 applications received. “Stephen has extensive engineering skills and considerable experi-
ence in local government across three states and council looks forward to working with him as a team to meet our future challenges,” he said. Mr Bell said he was looking forward to working with council to carry out the projects in the Community Strategic Plan. The position was previously held by Dr Dennis Gascoigne who left on 3 July to resume work in genomic medicine.
This is not Mr Bell’s first role as director. He held the position of director at the Shire of Plantagenet and Serpentine Jarrahdale Shire in Western Australia and prior to relocating to Queensland was the director of infrastructure services for five years at the City of South Perth. He has also previously worked as a manager at Cessnock and Maclean in NSW and Albany and Gosnells in Western Australia.
Cream of the crop THE cream of Tenterfield businesses were out in force last Thursday night as council held its inaugural business and tourism awards. It was a sold-out event, with businesses booking tables to the gala dinner and awards ceremony at the Tenterfield School of Arts well in advance. Mayor Peter Petty congratulated the winners and said they should be extremely proud of the relationships they have built up, including those with council and TADBA which work hard to increase business potential in the region. Kim Trieste Hastings of the Australian Business Apprenticeships Centre hosted the awards. In brief Learn the lingo ALL Year 5 students in Queensland state schools will have to learn a language from 2015. Currently it is mandatory for all students to learn a language from Years 6 to 8. State schools will decide which languges to offer in consultation with the community. Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said schools were still strongly encouraged to offer languages from Prep to Year 12.
Buckle up STANTHORPE kids will now buckle up on their trips to school thanks to the government’s Seatbelts on Regional School Buses Program. Recent statistics from the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics show more than 80 per cent of bus passenger fatalities occurred outside major cities. The Australian Government’s program allows bus operators, on recognised rural and regional school routes, to apply for up to $25,000 to have seatbelts installed in new buses or refitted in existing ones.

Providing employment
RECENTLY the Australian part of the Murdoch print media printed a very nasty photo of a boy holding up a head that was said to be part of a dead body found in his local area. We were told that the head had been “hacked” from someone caught up in the local fighting. The story with the photo was designed to give the readers the impression that even Muslim children are capable of terrorist activities and to support the nonsense we are being fed regarding the Australian Muslims who have gone to fight with their fellow family members in Iraq and Syria. Australian ex-servicepeople who have been involved in active fighting in any of the wars we have been dragged into over the past 70 years would be able to tell of dreadful sights and sounds they have experienced during the fighting, they could also tell of the many body parts that are left lying around after a serious fight. Most ex-servicemen tried hard to forget what they had seen and done in a war that had involved them, but in this instance it was good propaganda helping to keep the fighting going, so the Murdoch press wasn’t going to let it slip by. The fighting in the Middle East Arab countries is being converted from the family feuds that have been dragging on over many years in that area into a religious war that can spill over into other countries around the world. Oil companies that have been given exploration areas in these countries are at present making huge profits from the oil they are recovering and they are concerned that if a president like the late Saddam Hussein was able to gain control again they would lose a very nice earner. There is also another group worried about the sudden increase in Muslim families in countries like Australia; they are the Christian churches. Not that long ago a spokesman for one of our churches spoke of the serious difference between Muslim and Christian families. Christians were having one or two children while Muslims families could rise to six or seven children. Living in a society that has become very Americanised over the past 20 to 30 years has become difficult, we need to look closely at most of what is happening around us or we are going to lose our Australian Identity altogether. G.H.Gilmour, Stanthorpe.
THE one thing we do well in the shire is provide high-paid employment to a select group known as executive officers of our council. I see this group as having no connection with the area except as a ‘cash cow’ and answering to no-one, least of all, the ‘ratepayer’. It is all very well for any mayor to shed crocodile tears about our problems, but what did any councillor do when it was decreed owners of vacant blocks should attract as much as $500 per annum for water access in addition (here in Yangan) to the ‘$500 Yangan water access connection annual charge’? Where is the evidence anyone opposed this shameless ‘rip-off’? The only people who would correct this are those who endorsed it. Councillors are politicians at local government level and rightly are identified with state and federal politicians. When local residents Halvor Guy and Maureen Greene advanced strong arguments aimed at having our local council, led by anti-water solution Mayor Bellingham, connect Warwick water from Mt Tabor to Yangan, their efforts were soundly rejected. The Labor Government Treasurer, Fraser made an offer to finance the project. This too was rejected for whatever reason. I was present when a deputation called on Treasurer Andrew Fraser who told us the offer to finance the pipeline was real and would remain on the table. The council bowed to pressure and reluctantly connected Warwick water to Yangan. Not being satisfied with the government grant, the council under the leadership of Mayor Bellingham imposed an immediate impost on Yangan ratepayers in the form of the ‘Yangan water access 20mm connection’ which today stands at $500.70. In my case I now pay $1001.40 per annum for the water access financed by a previous Labor Government. The council is still exacting revenge for the audacity to seek a benefit the then council opposed. The Southern Downs Regional Council, like each of the councils since the days of the late Stan Walsh, gives the clear impression the welfare of ratepayers must always be subordinated to the whims and fancies of the top-heavy, over-paid, privileged executive officers and the politicians in the guise of councillors. Lou Rowan, Yangan.
Once Upon a Quart Pot ONCE upon a Quart Pot, a community developed and grew. From the beginning, residents built social capital, though none knew what it was. A council was established to administer Quart Pot and the granite country. Council acknowledged social capital and supported community projects. A century passed, a new millennium approached, and King Peter addressed his subjects from George St: “Small communities will not survive. I recommend Quart Pot combine with Palmerin City.” Charismatic King Peter convinced a majority of his subjects, who ticked the ‘Yes’ box on their democracy sheet. Now across George St Kingdom, citizens regret their ‘Yes’ tick and search in vain for a return to the 20th century. Quart Pot residents recoil at the latest insult from Palmerin Town Hall: “To hell with social capital! Citizens are “customers”! A group who rents Quart Pot Civic Centre must remunerate council for all relevant outgoings. (For details, go to Palmerin City website: greedygrabbers.com. au). Ah yes, these are sad and sorry times for the folk of Quart Pot. Kev Rowley, Wyberba.

Top Guy at the tourism helm GRANITE Belt Wine and Tourism (GBWT) has a new kid on the block, with Guy Cantrel appointed as marketing manager. Mr Cantrel, who represented French leisure resorts in Australia before starting and managing his own travel agency in Brisbane, took the helm on Monday. He said tourism was an essential part of the economic development of the region and called on local business owners to sign up as members. “Statistics show that every tourist dollar attracted to the region by tourism operators filters through the other economic sectors up to seven times - from the service station, to the supermarket, to the pharmacy,” he said. “All residents of a community where tourism is an important industry therefore enjoy a higher level of infrastructure than they might have otherwise.” Mr Cantrel takes over from Sarah Reeves, who announced her shock exit in June, citing a lack of decision-making at board level as the main reason for her departure. By ALENA HIGGINS WHAT started out as a way to better manage man’s best friend has turned into a life-long passion for two Warwick women. Ellen Senior and Barbara Dingley crossed paths when they joined Warwick Dog Obedience Club more than a decade ago. Ellen said it was apparent from day one that her Australian cattle dog, Jess, needed direction. “I was given her as a pup and I just took one look at her eyes and went ‘oh boy I’m in trouble here’,” she said. “I had done obedience with another dog about 30 odd years ago and when I got Jess and realised I had a very smart pup on my hands and a very lively pup I thought, ‘right I will find the nearest dog obedience club and get her trained properly’.” Around the same time, Barbara noticed Czarina, her German short-haired pointer, was

Just by being stimulated, a dog’s behaviour can rapidly improve, Ellen said. “They love learning new
things," she said. And the secret to successful obedience training? “Consistency,” Ellen said. Club members and their vaccinated pooches meet every Sunday at 2.30pm at the showgrounds (gate four). Cost is $5 which includes tea and coffee.
Tax Tip - Tax Offset / Tax Deduction Tax acronyms and terminology often result in confusion amongst the general public. Things are not always as simple as they seem. For example, the terms ‘tax offset’ and ‘tax deduction’ don’t mean the same thing. A tax deduction is a claimable expense that reduces your total assessable income and therefore your tax by your marginal tax rate. Tax offsets provide a dollar for dollar reduction in your tax payable regardless of your taxable income. As a general rule, offsets can reduce your tax payable to zero, but on their own they cannot get you a refund. Also, they can’t be used to reduce any Medicare Levy you need to pay.
There are however, special tax offsets known as ‘refundable tax offsets’ that can be used to pay your Medicare Levy and you can even get a refund from them. For example, say you have an overall tax bill of $3,600 which includes a Medicare Levy of $100 and $4,000 of nonrefundable tax offsets. These offsets will reduce your net tax payable to zero, but they can’t be used to reduce the Medicare Levy you will still have a $100 tax bill. However, if you had $4,000 of refundable tax offsets, then the net tax and Medicare levy would both be paid and you would receive a $400 refund. An example of refundable tax offsets is private health insurance.

THERE were thrills and spills as almost 200 cars took to the track at the annual Historic Leyburn Sprints last weekend. About 12,000 motoring enthusiasts turned out to watch the classic contest, which featured a colourful display of racing, sports and touring cars spanning nine decades. Although there was only light rain at the Darling Downs township on Saturday, the around-the-houses track surface remained greasy times were slower and several cars slid off on corners, although without serious damage. One of the casualties was track record-holder Brett Hayward, who overshot the first turn in his RF92 Van Diemen-rotary and broke the front wing. Subsequently, he was beaten to the fastest time of the day by Neil Lewis, who recorded 51.7 seconds around the one-kilometre course in a DBF1 single-seater. As well as the time trials on a one-kilometre round-the-houses course, the Sprints hosted a new Retro Caravan Show Off and on Sunday visitors enjoyed the highly anticipated Shannons Show 'n’ Shine display. President Ann Collins said the event was a roaring success. “It was a wonderful weekend, everyone went home with smile on their faces and really pleased with it,” she said. Plans are already afoot to celebrate the “big one” - two decades of smoke and rubber - next year, Ms Collins said. For more photos, head to our online gallery at www.freetimes.com. au

What’s On Wild flowers THE Granite Belt’s unique flora will be the focus of a series of wildflower walks being conducted over the next three months by the Stanthorpe Rare Wildflower Consortium, with the first being this Sunday 31 August, in the Amiens State Forest, just west of Stanthorpe. Secretary of the consortium Liz Bourne said the walks aimed to show people some of the diversity of the flora of the Granite Belt as well as helping them to identify local species and learn more about their ecological requirements. “We have been running these spring time walks for a number of years now and they have been very popular with visitors as well as the local community,” she said. “A particular highlight of the first walk will be the endangered granite boronia, Boronia Granitica, which is already in flower. “This spectacular pink flowering shrub is only found on the Granite Belt and from a few isolated locations on the New England tableland. “After the recent rain, there will also be a profusion of many
Participants will be able to see the endangered granite boronia, Boronia Granitica.
other wildflowers on display so there will be plenty to see in the forest.” As part of their activities to raise public awareness about local flora, the group had produced a colour booklet which depicts over 250 species people are most likely to come across. These will be available for sale at the walks. Anyone with an interest in the Granite Belt’s wildflowers was invited to come along. The group will meet outside the Amiens School at 1337
Amiens Road, 14 km west of Stanthorpe at 9.30am, and will then travel a short distance out to the forest. Participants should bring a hat and water bottle and wear sturdy footwear. The walk is suitable for most ages and fitness levels. For further information, phone 4683 6374 or visit www. granitenet.com.au/groups/environment/rare-wildflower-consortiumWalkers will get to see the endangered granite boronia, Boronia granitica.
The last dance in the Belt By TANIA PHILLIPS COME along for what could be one last chance to enjoy the Granite Belt Dance Club’s popular senior citizens event at Stanthorpe Civic Centre from 1.30pm on Saturday. After 30 years of organising the Concert for Seniors, the Granite Belt Dance Club may be making this year’s concert their last. Granite Belt Dance Club president Jenel Hunt said the increase in hall hire costs meant that the group would no longer be able to afford to host the event at the Civic Centre in coming years. "We use the Civic Centre because of the disabled facilities, as it’s important to us that people from the nursing home and both Carramars be able to join the more able-bodied seniors
for the event. But recently the Civic Centre hire rate trebled and even with a discount for a not-for-profit organisation, we’ll be unable to afford the rent next year. "The artists are wonderful and give of their time and talents for no charge and despite the costs associated with the hire of the hall and the afternoon tea that we provide, we’ve always presented this concert as a completely free event; so as you can imagine, the tripling of the hall hire is quite momentous for our little group.” The event will feature Mario Costanzo with his country music, talented guitarist and crooner Lee Williams, John Arlidge of Whiskey Gully fame and beloved folk duo Roger Ilott and Penny Davies, who always share some of their wonderful musical stories that bring
alive the personality of inner Australia. This is a popular event on the seniors’ calendar, so is not to be missed. This year there’s an even bigger reason to make sure you come along and enjoy the concert. The afternoon includes a couple of short brackets of social dancing so that people know what sort of dances the social dance club does at The Summit Hall on Thursday nights. It’s rounded off with a big afternoon tea which is well known among people who have attended the concert in past years. Sandwiches, slices, scones, biscuits and the plates just keep coming out. So come along for a great afternoon of entertainment, absolutely free. You can’t get better than that.

Art of all sorts ARE you creative then the Warwick Artist’s group need you. The group is going “FashionArty” - a mixture of fabric and fibre art including felting, dying, silk painting, screen printing, sculpture, leatherwork, quilting, you name it - and they want you to make it. A parade and show will be held on 15 November at Williams Hall in Guy Street, Warwick, with the evening including bubbly and canapes as well as the parade of everything from “Wearable Art Couture” to “Fantastic Fantasy”. It’s a chance for everyone to have fun and create anything that their imagination inspires them to do. You can make your entry out of everything from the finest silk to recycled plastic bags. If you can imagine it and create it, we want it. If you can’t sew, but can create out of metal, wood, plastic leather, even shoe laces or wire. The group would like to invite people who might like to stretch their creative juices to join in on the fun for “Fashion Arty”. The club is already running classes to inspire and introduce new and exciting facets of creativity to those who would like to try something new and use the many crafts that they already have stored in their knowledge. For further details and entry forms, contact Juanita Faint on 4667 0414 or email to juanitafaint@bigpond.com
Equestrian events abound By ALENA HIGGINS IT’S almost time to saddle up ahead of the Queensland International Three Day Event (QI3DE) at Morgan Park this weekend. A smorgasbord of equestrian events are on offer for riders and spectators alike, beginning with dressage tomorrow, cross country on Saturday and showjumping on Sunday. QI3DE organiser Dr Cameron Osborne said a host of big name riders, including former Olympian Rebel Morrow were on board as well as acclaimed ABC sports commentator Warren Boland. He said in many ways eventing was the ultimate test of horsemanship. “Eventing is the triathlon equestrian sport where the same horse and rider combination compete over three days...and the rider with the lowest penalties is the winner,” he said. The annual competition was established five years ago in an effort to reel in eventers who had jumped ship. “We really wanted to upgrade the level of com-
petition in Queensland,” Dr Osborne said. “NSW is most certainly the steam room of equestrian sport in Australia, that’s where most eventers are attracted to go and we’ve lost a few.” Highlights include a state of origin contest pitting eight riders from NSW and Queensland against one another in a battle for origin glory. On Sunday, a 5km and 2km charity fun run, which weaves its way around the cross country course, is expected to draw hundreds of participants in pink and blue. The $5 entry fee (a gold coin donation for under 12s) will be donated to Pink Bras Blue Jocks, a charity supporting breast and prostate cancer patients through Mater Chicks in Pink and the Wesley Hospital’s prostate cancer care program. Fun run participants can register at Black Toyota, Mr Rental or Warwick Outdoors and Sports. Cost to enter QI3DE is a gold coin donation. For more information and the event itinerary visit www.qi3de.org.au

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20) The little brush with truth that you have had, has made it clear that there’s some letting go to do before you can fully rejuvenate. Understanding helps us attune to the currents of life and cause ourselves less friction. There’s no need to force anything. Alone-time helps breed strength. GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) This is a moment to stand strong and proud. Flex your spine. Have a dance that fires off some good feelings in your heart, about who you are and what you’ve been doing. Though there may be a temptation to get pulled into a current of unhelpful emotion, don’t entertain it at all. CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22) This is a new Moon week. That means it’s the end of one phase and the beginning of another. The tone is determined by where the Sun is - which is in Virgo. The best way to understand Virgo is to see it as a metaphor for virgin nature, a garden or a forest. Renew the natural order. LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22) Even though the Sun is wandering off into the fields of Virgo, this is a special time for you. Venus and Jupiter, both of whom have grown manes and are growling like aristocrats, are fuelling you with light, confidence, strength and bravado. Aspire to your deepest wishes. VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22) The Sun is moving into Virgo. This brings warmth and light – and an added push to stay true to any virtues you won’t compromise. The Moon is moving into Virgo too, making this a time of ending and renewal. After the night comes the renewal of dawn. Trust the process you are in. LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23) Life is providing the kinds of changes required to get you on track with the authenticity of your most essential wishes and dreams. Sometimes we have to wait for the opening of doors that we can’t control. Life is full of compassion for our spirit, if not always our egos. Stay true.

Trivia by Ric Allport
Can you find the hidden meaning in the picture puzzles below? 1.
ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20) You know that it’s time to dig a little deeper. Whether it’s digging deeper into what you have to offer or digging deeper into what you have to understand, all the cues are there. Take the hint and make the move. Skimming across the surface isn’t delivering the satisfaction you need.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21) Be as alert as a samurai and as patient as Job. This combination of energies, brought to you by Mars and Saturn, has the capacity to wake you up out of any existential sleep you might happen to be in. Living demands urgency not forgetfulness and apathy. Doors can open through this. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21) This is a transformative and healing time. The curious thing is that most of the action is going on under the surface, out of sight of the conscious mind. If we knew what was going on, we’d get in the way of it. Life is recalibrating your engine, refuelling your appetite for life. Assist it. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19) If, when life is turning things around, we fall too heavily into doubt, we extend our suffering. It’s important to find ways to stay steady in self-esteem, when the going gets tough. Give yourself kudos. To depend on external witnesses doesn’t always help. Be very proud of who you are. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18) Though your impatience would have you making changes or moving on, the reality is, life is holding you in one place, to further hone your skills and deepen your mastery. Plateaus are important. One has to cross them with understanding and awareness. Don’t jump the gun. PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20) Relationship is the ultimate mirror. In intimacy we are privileged to see things about ourselves that we can’t really spot anywhere else. Life is feeding you with realness and delight. This is washing away illusions. Don’t be afraid. Truth is better than the dream. Take a broad view.

Young at heart are vibrant By ALENA HIGGINS HUNDREDS of people converged on Warwick Indoor Recreational and Aquatic Centre last Thursday to take part in the Seniors’ Week expo. Expo-goers were treated to an array of entertainment, including a dog obedience demonstration, cyber safety talk and up-beat musical numbers by the Wuppies Ukulele Group. “It was brilliant,” Seniors’ Week working group co-ordinator Pam Burley said. “About 400 people were there and over 60 stalls.” A debrief will be conducted on Tuesday, but initial feedback was positive, Ms Burley said. “Feedback from some of our regulars who attend every expo was that it has been good and that we had a lot of new stallholders,” she said. “Assumption College did a great job with the catering and hospitality and just generally supporting on the day.” This year’s theme, “It’s on for young and old”, encouraged seniors to live a vibrant life. trailer mounted animal tents this Big Top city is an unforgettable sight and is an attraction of its own. The atmosphere inside the tent is provided with the sights and sounds of yesteryear with Popcorn and Fairy Floss stalls with traditional circus music played before the show and during intermission, but don’t get us wrong this is a thoroughly modern circus production using Hi Tech lighting and sound with a soundtrack of modern music. Every show is an experience that will leave you spellbound with acts such as the Daring Tightrope, Australia’s largest performing Mixed animal act, 6 Dancing Stallions, Aerial artists, Acrobatic routines, Western style Whipcracking and Rope Spinning act, a full Flying Trapeze troupe direct from a recent tour of Europe, crazy and side splitting clowns and many other artists and animals wrapped up in a fantastic fast moving show presented by Australia’s foremost Ringmaster, Shane Lennon. Cowboys, Storm prove their mettle By CASEY O’CONNOR
1151384-RC35-14
THE 2014 premiership landscape underwent changes in round 24 as the 2013 Premiers stamped their authority with an emphatic win in NZ. The Cowboys and Storm confirmed they are serious contenders after their emphatic wins, and for others alarm bells are sounding. At the opposite end of the leaderboard, the Sharks look to have nailed the 2014 wooden spoon. Manly’s minor premiership hopes took a body blow when the Eels ravaged them at Pirtek Stadium. The normally unflappable Eagles saw a 12-0 half-time lead evaporate as
the Eels turned on their best 40 minutes of football this season. The win catapulted Parra into final’s mix and left the door ajar for a grandstand finish for the minor premiership. The Bunnies were sent back to their hutch wounded and weary by the Cowboys following one of the most dominating wins this season. The Cowboys played an almost error-free 80 minutes. Two late tries to the Bunnies flattered their performance. They need to bounce back this week when they open the round at ANZ in their game against the Dogs. The Dogs dominated the first half against the Tigers, but the back end of
Footy Tipping
their game will need to be sharper to beat the Bunnies. Brisbane and the Dragons kept their finals aspirations on life support after emphatic wins. They are locked on 26 points apiece as they go head to head at Suncorp on Friday night. The winner’s fate will depend on the outcome of the Eels Knights game. A win by the Knights will give either Brisbane or St George another sniff. The Raiders look to have avoided the wooden spoon after their win over the Sharks. They should add another win to their season tally when they host the forlorn Tigers on Saturday.
The season end cannot come quick enough for both clubs. Strap yourselves in for what is shaping as one of the games of the season as the Roosters take on the 2014 contenders, Melbourne on Saturday night. The Roosters made light of the toughest trip in the league when they thrashed the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium. The home side had most of the possession early, but imploded as the Roosters ran in eight tries to two. Melbourne Storm announced themselves as 2014 contenders with a 24-10 win against the in-form Panthers. The Storm has put inconsistent form behind them and along with the Cowboys are building momentum.

A much tougher assignment here for the Roosters. The Warriors have played themselves out of contention this season, but have the chance to redeem themselves in their final home game when they host the Titans. Both sides performed poorly in round 24 - expect the Warriors to win here.

Minute's silence for ref The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
THIS past Saturday footballers and supporters joined referees at Killarney and Tenterfield in observing a minute’s silence for a young TRL referee tragically killed in a car accident. His name was Adam Schwerin, his dad also a TRL referee and while he was not wellknown to the BRL competition, the BRL and all other leagues in Central Division chose to acknowledge his passing - he was after all a member of the Rugby League family. By all accounts this young man was a bit of a larrikin and it is at times like this that all the send-offs, judiciaries and appeals pale into insignificance. By all accounts he was well-respected by his peers - one recently had the opportunity to review and give him coaching and was pleased to see how much he had improved. He was a regular at development updates each year, and always willing to referee at short notice but most importantly, like so many others, he stuck at refereeing when it would have been so easy for him to walk away. If you are someone that is not a supporter of referees; this weekend think about this young bloke before yelling those critical observations (some may consider abuse) and consider the person refereeing the game. They may make a few mistakes, but they are only human. None of us know what the future will hold, so instead of being critical -how about congratulating the referee on their effort or thanking them regardless of the decisions that they make, because I can guarantee one thing - they are just doing their best, no matter their age or where they come from and remember without them there is no game. - Casey TIGERS TOUGH IT OUT IT TOOK extra-time in last weekend’s major semi-final to determine who was heading directly to the 2014 BRL grand final after the Gremlins and Tigers were deadlocked at 10-all at full time. In what was one of the toughest BRL semifinals seen for years, the result could easily have gone either way. Brad Crisp opened the scoring for the visitors in the 10th minute with a break down the left side of the field to score in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful and the visitors led 4-0. Tigers second rower Lucas Dearden was felled by friendly fire from team-mate Jim Loneragan shortly after and left the field with what looked to be a serious knee injury. The Tigers were forced to cover the loss of one of their best attacking players for the remainder of the game.
The Tenterfield Tigers celebrate after their win in the BRL major semi-final and the President's Cup.
Tigers Captain Coach Brendan Minns accepts the Presiden'ts Cup Trophy from BRL chairman Casey O'Connor.
Tigers lock Jim Loneragan faces some solid Gremlins defence.
Outstanding goal-line defence from both sides saw the game swing from end to end before Jack Daniells scored for the Tigers to lock the scores up at four apiece. Conditions made it difficult for the kickers and the Tenterfield conversion was also unsuccessful. Shortly before the half-time break Ben Watts powered over under the post to give the minor premiers the lead. With the conversion successful, the Tigers led 10-4 at the half-time break. It was more of the same as the second half began with strong attacking raids from both sides repelled as they threw everything into the game. The Tenterfield defence eventually cracked and Joel Littlefield scored in the corner. Jarrod McIntosh defied the conditions with a fantastic conversion from the eastern sideline to lock up the scores at 10-all. Tigers captain coach Brendan Minns missed a penalty in the dying seconds of game which could have given the Tigers the game. The deadlock appeared to be broken when

Tigers centre Farron Anderson looked to have scored in the corner. The referee and linesman found an infringement and the try was disallowed, to the dismay of the big crowd of local supporters. As conditions deteriorated and with the scores deadlocked at full-time the lights were turned on as the game headed into extra-time. Players from both sides looked to be out on their feet as they prepared for another 10 minutes each way of football. Both sides stepped up their defence but it was Tigers halfback Wesley Doo that eventually cracked the Stanthorpe defence to score and give his side a 14-10 lead. It was a nail-biting finish to extra time for supporters and players of both sides as the Gremlins threw everything they had in attack at the Tigers. The Tigers defence was outstanding as they clung to their slim lead. The final score 14-10 gave the Tigers the President’s Cup and a home grand final in two weeks. Both captains, Brendan Minns and Damian Petrie agreed it was one of the toughest and best matches they had played. Tigers winger Jesse Murphy was named Man of the Match and also picked up the Tigers’ award for Players’ Player. The Gremlins now face Killarney in the knock semi this weekend at Sullivan Oval. The semifinal played in Killarney was also a tough game between finals specialists Texas and the Cutters. Texas stalwart Kev Lowrey, who played several games for the Terriers this season dusted off his boots to go around in yet another semi-final and almost helped his side to another finals appearance with a two try cameo performance. In the end the Cutters proved too strong, coming from behind at half-time to win 16-10 and give themselves another chance to defend their 2013 premiership. They will be bolstered in what will be another tough game this weekend by the return of their captain coach John Trindall from suspension. TIGERETTES CELEBRATE THERE was plenty of celebrating on Saturday when the Tigerettes became the first BRL League Tag side through to the inaugural ladies' League
Tag Grand Final after they won a tough game against the Texas Terrierettes. The Tenterfield girls have been all class this season but were tested on Saturday by a vastly improved Texas side. Leading the way for the Terrierettes was Jamie Scott, who put her girls on the front foot and caused the home side plenty of headaches. At the half-time break the Tenterfield girls held a narrow 12-10 lead but after a strong chat from their coach Wayne Minns they regrouped in the second half and put the ball through the hands and he found space to attack the Texas line. They ran out winners 26-12. Ashleigh Taylor was once again strong for the Tigerettes, as was Sophie Cooper and Meg Landers. Tenterfield will host the winner of this weekend’s knock-out semi this weekend between the Terrierettes and the Gremlinettes after Stanthorpe proved too strong for the Ramettes in the game played at Wallangarra. The girls’ preliminary final kicks off at 1.30 on Saturday at Sullivan Oval. BOWLERS BOUND FOR STATE FINALS STANTHORPE bowlers Brian Brown, Rob Alcock, Frank Taylor and Skip Mick Mills are bound for Brisbane and the State Championships after their recent win in the final of the Group Three fours competition at Goondiwindi. The State Championships will be played at the Toombul Bowls club at the end of October and the team will be putting in plenty of hours of practice on the greens at the Stanthorpe Bowls club between now and October in an effort to bring home the State Championship. Mills and his team get their shot at the state finals after their win in the Group Three competition which includes teams from Southern Downs, Condamine, Downs and Maranoa/Warrego. The Stanthorpe awesome foursome had a convincing 30-10 win over Downs champions from the Toowoomba Club to set up a clash with Chinchilla in the final. Chinchilla fielded a talented group of bowlers led by skip, Brian Turner who was runner-up in the State Champion of Champion Fours in 2011. Mills and his team proved too good for their opposition. After playing some outstanding bowls they dominated in the final winning 23-13.

Local Sport Success for the Stanthorpe bowlers did not finish with a win in the Fours. Frank Taylor was successful in the singles final. After securing a spot in the semi-final, Taylor proved too strong for the Maranoa/Warrego champion setting up a finals clash with Jessie Slatter of the West Toowoomba Club in the final. In an exciting game Taylor won 25-21 and progresses to the State Singles Final which will also be played in Brisbane at the Toombul club in October. Mick Mills has been one of the district’s top bowlers for many years and says he is delighted to be heading to the State Finals with this group of bowlers. Mills believes the group has a real chance of pulling off a win in October and says he still has aspirations to represent his state in the game. One thing for certain is that Mills and his fellow bowlers will have the support of the Stanthorpe community as well as the bowlers from the Southern Downs District. BLEAK CONDITIONS BUT GOOD FIELD DESPITE the bleak and overcast conditions last Saturday a good field took to the fairways in the Aqua Rural sponsored Stableford competition. Golfers were joined by members of the Aqua rural team, Remo, Chris and Cameron. A score of 41 points was good enough to give Mick O’Brien a win in the event just ahead of Aaron Simmers who returned a score of 41 points. Hannah Reeves continued her winning form when she collected the prize for best ladies’ score. Santo Cavallaro had best shot to win the pin at 3/12 and Stephen Hooper claimed 17. Pro-pins were won by Matt Leigh at 1/10, Kev Rowling at 5/14 and Craig Fossey at 9/18. Run-down went to scores of 36 and better. Aqua Rural’s Cameron Turner who plays off a handicap of one returned an impressive score of 37 but declined the prize on offer. Although his playing is restricted, he still hits the ball very straight and very long. This Saturday’s competition is the end of month 4BBB medley Stableford sponsored by Howard and Sons; a shotgun start at 11.45am. A reminder to all golfers, the Foursome Championships for men and ladies will be held on 14 September, 27 holes for the day. Time to begin arranging partners for the event. WEATHER SCUTTLES BOWLS THE inclement weather scuttled any attempt to play bowls last weekend at the Summit. Club officials are hoping for better conditions this weekend for the SDMDBA pennants/3rd division pennants competition. Looking a little further afield Saturday 6 September is the Stanley and Sweeney Trophy Day. Of course that will be followed by the much anticipated Italian Night. Bookings for that evening can be made at the club. A diary note for all bowlers should be the Summit’s annual Apple Blossom carnival set down for 25 and 26 September. UNITED SURPRISE WOLVES STANTHORPE United men’s side head to yet another grand final after an emphatic win over the Warwick Wolves last weekend. The 6-1 score line came as a surprise to many, including the Redbacks seasoned coach Steve McEvoy. The wet conditions did little to dampen the performance of the Redbacks, especially striker Brett McEvoy who found the back of the net on four occasions. United’s other goals came from Captain Matt Purcell and the consistent Curtis Allen. The win marks another outstanding performance for this Men’s A Grade side and while McEvoy was thrilled with the win he and his

Stanthorpe bowlers led by skip Mick Mills, right, proudly display their winning shield after their success in the Group 3 championships at Goondiwindi. The group now head to Brisbane for the state finals in October.

team have the grand final experience behind them to know that the job is not done yet. McEvoy says they need to remain focused. United will meet the winner of the knock-out game between Ballandean and Warwick which will be played at Ballandean after Ballandean scored a tough 3-2 win over City. Tenterfield have progressed to the grand final after they defeated Ballandean in a penalty shootout in the major semi-final of the ladies’ competition. The United ladies will also play at Ballandean this weekend for their place in the ladies’ grand final after they held on to defeat City. They will need to beat minor premiers Ballandean on home turf to progress.
Peter Solomon showed he is multi-talented, winning the IPSC and Michael Dudgeon had to settle for the runner-up position again. In third place was Stephanie Dudgeon. This weekend is the club scheduled working bee and organisers are looking for plenty of support. The following Sunday is the first sporting clay day on the new course. The club is hoping to hold a Saturday shoot for this event on a monthly basis - date yet to be determined. The club recently joined the social media world launching a facebook page “Sporting Shooters Association of Australia Inglewood Branch” for members and anyone interested in the club’s activities.
REDDIES A STEP CLOSER THE Warwick Redbacks are one step closer to the Darling Downs AFL premiership after a convincing win over Souths last weekend handed them the Minor Premiership. The club went close to premiership glory in 2001, 2002 and more recently in 2011 going down to the Tigers. This year their quest for the flag continues when they host the USQ Cougars this weekend in the qualifying final. The winner progresses directly to the grand final on 20 September.
WALLANGARRA WEEKEND GOLF THE die-hard golfers put the wet and miserable weather conditions aside to play a stroke event at Wallangarra last weekend. It was the second week in succession that golfers needed the wet weather gear and woollies. Gary Sutcliffe was under a cloud early on, but came away with a solid win. Brendan McMillan was the runner-up. Only one pin shot, at the ninth and that also went to Gary Sutcliffe who can claim good wet weather form. Conditions were much improved for the Golf World Two Ball Ambrose event. The better conditions brought out a big crowd and there was plenty of fun on the course. Jason Hurtz and Peter Mikkelson combined well to snare the gross winner’s trophy. Nett winners were Kevin Miller and Taffy Edwards with Denis McMeniman and Peter Williams finishing nett runners-up. Pin shots went the way of Jason Hurtz; Chris Edwards at nine (after taking advice from new coach, Denis Mc). The approach shot went to Peter Williams. The ladies’ team of P. Moore and M. Siddons picked up a special prize - primarily I hear for putting up with the men. The prestigious and much sought-after NAGA award sought went to Chris Edwards and Brendan McMillan. Perhaps this Saturday the gods will give organisers a sunny day for their 4BBB.
STANTHORPE CLUB COLLECT $2500 IT WAS a case of pick up $2500 for the Stanthorpe Golf Club who recently claimed the cash after members for the Lexus Cup competition and the club won the draw for most new members. The club says the unexpected windfall will be used for junior coaching. With another draw due later in the year, the club is hoping to repeat the effort. PISTOLS DRAWN FOR GULLY GONG PISTOL-PACKING pensioners joined the young ’uns in an action packed day at the Inglewood SSAA range on Sunday. Wal and Lynne Shepherd who are new members travelled from Brisbane for the pistol events. It was on for young and old with Action Pistol and IPSC matches. The “Gully Gong” was a hit with all and sundry and the IPSC saw many a hostage bite the dust as well. The IPSC is conducted with 9mm and above semi-automatic handguns. In an interesting aside, at the end of the event secretary Tom Donald did a run with a .44 calibre muzzle loading revolver and obtained a perfect score! The Gully Gong, which was a timed and scored event went the way of Pete Solomon of Texas ahead of Michael Dudgeon of Inglewood and Tom Donald.
SPORTERS WIN FOR DICK DICK Hilton finally got the main prize at Sporters in Stanthorpe last Sunday when he edged out runner-up Mark Lynam. Run-downs went to Keith Allen and Jim Mitchell. Hannah Reeves had the best gross for the day. Mick Doorley took the pin shot on the 12th and Jim Furyck the 17th. Adam Scott took the Pro Pin. Poor old Clarky had a bad day of golf - I am told it was caused mainly by his intake of water
SOUTHERN DOWNS TEAM LEAD THE WAY WATTLES and the Cowboys edged closer to grand final glory last weekend with wins in their semi-finals. Wattles continued their stellar season with a win over the defending premiers Gatton Hawks. Only a converted try separated the sides at the full-time siren. With the win Wattles progress to the Grand Final on 13 September. It will mark their first grand final appearance since 1997. Given their performance this season and the opportunity to rest and recuperate this weekend, they will certainly head into the grand final as warm favourites no matter which side they play. That of course will be decided this weekend in the preliminary final when the Hawks and Cowboys go head to head. The Cowboys, who have been playing to stay in the running since the beginning of the finals are growing in confidence. Last weekend they scored an emphatic 34-18 win over Souths to eliminate the final Toowoomba-based team from the finals. The Cowboys led 16-6 at the half-time break. Captain coach Jason Bradfield scored early in the second half to give his side what looked to be a winning buffer. Souths fought back in the second half but the Cowboys were able to trade tries with them and came away convincing winners. The win sets up a do-or-die clash with the Hawks on Saturday. It is a great result for the Cowboys who were written off by many earlier in the season. They are now just one win away from a local derby grand finale. The Cowboys Clive Berghoffer side also progressed to the next round of the finals when they defeated the Hawks 34-30. RAIN NEEDED JUST NOT ON SATURDAYS RECENT rain has the Warwick golf course looking magnificent but played havoc with the weekend competition. Friday’s Red Rooster Rumble enjoyed perfect conditions, however Saturday’s comp was a wash-out. The Red Rooster rumble field took full advantage of the improved conditions on Friday and the eventual winner of the nine-hole event was Joely Singleton with 25 points ahead of runner-up Mick Banks (22) on a countback from Gerry Morrissey. Morrisey did get to take home a ball in the rundown. A. Skinner and Gordon Baker collected pins at five and seven respectively. Conditions for the annual Holden Scramble event on Sunday were less than ideal. Damp, windy and very chilly but still there were 64 keen members who braved the conditions all keen to win and make it to the regional finals. The winning team with a score of 55.125 was Tim Sutton, Jeremy Ralph, Ben Brownlie and Scott Beard. Runners-up were Charlie Morrison, Kath Morrison, Shaun Morrison, and Eamon Cockram scoring 55.5 and in third post was the group of Neil Vickers, Harold Byrne, Jason Owens and Chris Malone with a score of 56.75 nett. The winning team this year will join club professional Rob McConnell to play in the regional finals at Pelican Waters in October. The winners from regional events will go on to play in the all expenses paid three-day national championships at Twin Waters Resort on the Sunshine Coast. This Saturday the club is holding a single Stableford event sponsored by Spanos Supa IGA. Timesheets and helpful staff are in the pro shop to assist you to organise your golf and to progress your game.

WARWICK BOWLS SADLY, early last week we lost another of our longterm bowlers with the death of Pat Owens. Pat has been in ill-health for many months but it was a shock to hear that he had passed away. We offer our sincere sympathy to Trish and her family. The C/S Pairs has come to a grinding stop with all this weather, only one game played last Wednesday between S. Valentine and B. Johnstone v R. Valentine and M. Holder, with Barry’s team the victors by 20-17. There will be no play next weekend as our green will be taken over by the
District for the Pennants, so competition play will resume on or before Saturday 6 September. Our pennants team or teams will be on the board but I don’t have the draw to hand, but good luck next weekend. The Bushies also had to put off their Sunday sponsor game because of the weather and also because the green wasn’t prepared on Saturday. This will now be held on Sunday 5 October. Results for KFC bowls played last Wed, P. Kerr, L. Collie, D. Warr 26 v P. Summers, B. Maunder, I. Campbell 18; A. Naylor, P. Gynther 23 v T. Wright, E. Welsh 13; R. Bone, P. Wagner 18 v W.
