Myer Christmas windows ‘coup’ to raise festive season excitement By NOEL MURPHY
WINDOW DRESSING: Mayor Darryn Lyons draws a crowd as he announces the Myer Christmas Windows display with Westfield’s Craig Tapping, Central Geelong Marketing chair Paul Whittaker and Myer’s Stephen McMillan. Picture: LOUISA JONES
CHRISTMAS celebrations in Geelong are about to ramp up exponentially with a string of Yuletide features. A special Myer Christmas Windows showcase in central Geelong to rival the company’s famed display in Melbourne is set to draw tens of thousands of spectators on the back of a giant, controversial Christmas tree floating on Corio Bay. Other attactions will include special lighting in shopping strips and a community-led shopfront decoration campaign for the central city area. The council-driven bonanza is aimed at making Christmas a drawcard across Geelong and further afield while boosting civic pride. City Hall brokered the Myer windows display with the retailer, Westfield and Central Geelong Marketing in what mayor Darryn Lyons called a cost-neutral coup. “This is part of our activation of central Geelong at the most important trading time of the year, he told the Independent. “We’ve negotiated with Myer to bring a retrospective of characters from past Myer Christmas Windows here as part of the 2014 central Geelong Christmas celebrations. Drugs fuel crime surge By PAUL MILLAR DRUG offences in Geelong have soared over the past year, with a local security boss saying “it’s as bad as I’ve ever seen it. The latest police statistics for Geelong show drug offences climbed 11.6 per cent to 607, with theft of motor vehicles up 8.9 per cent to 711. The drug statistics were no surprise to Rocky Pirrottina, the head of the Hume Protection Group and
a veteran observer of the street scene in Geelong. “There’s a big increase in drug use‌there’s a lot of people who are off their faces,’’ the one-time boxing champion said. His company provides security guards for Geelong taxi ranks, giving them a first-hand perspective of activities in the early hours. “People seem to be more stoned than drunk these days,’’ Mr Pirrottina said.
“Nobody has money anymore and then there’s the ice. There are a lot more desperate people out there. Assaults in Geelong were down from 1854 to 1777 and residential burglaries dipped from 1136 to 1078. Geelong Police Inspector Gary Thompson said the Divisional Response Unit, High Volume Crime Team and Criminal Investigation Unit could take the credit for detecting illicit drug use and operations.
“These units continue to be extremely active and significant arrests continue to be made. These units will continue to tackle serious crime groups and illicit drug activity, Insp Thompson said. Surf Coast statistics showed a drop of 17 per cent in drug offences to 93 but crime against the person was up 23 per cent to 470 offences. Property offences rose from 1430 to 1656, assaults from 310 to 332 and car theft from 57 to 70.
Surf Coast Inspector Peter Seel said the increases in his area were disappointing. “A lot of these crimes can be attributed to family violence assaults, although there are other categories that have also increased including property damage and theft of and from motor vehicles. “There has been an increase in residential burglaries and other burglary, which is a concern.

Double Take ISIS is on the way to Waurn Ponds. More specifically, it’s planning a “project” at the suburb’s Deakin University campus. And helpfully, it announced its intentions in the public notices of a local paper. Before ASIO gets its trench coats in a twist, we should clarify that the ISIS in question is actually a construction company - “Australia’s leading commercial fit-out and refurbishment specialist”, in fact. Its public notice – with the company’s name as an attention-grabbing headline – sought quotes from suppliers and subcontractors for the project. Phew! For a minute there…

WHILE on Deakin, its boffins were busy this week announcing all sorts of weird and wonderful research findings. First we learnt that kids are more active in winter. This might surprise parents who spend countless hours driving between sports and training nights from April to September. Then came the revelation that crimson rosellas identify each other by the smell of old feathers. “Amazing”, was the Deakin description. Now all we need to know is whether kids can identify parrots by smelling old research papers. Quick, put in a research funding grant!
CATS star Jimmy Bartel might be spending more time than usual in the changerooms to spruce up for his new role. The Brownlow medallist was this week named “the first ever Australian L’Oreal Men Expert Ambassador”. Bartel revealed he was a “long-time devotee” of the cosmetic brand’s products. The new ambassador was “looking forward” to sharing his “tips and favourite products with Aussie men” and would even film “educational videos” on skin-care routines. Footy endoresements sure have come a long way since Garry ‘Buddha’ Hocking changed his name to a brand of Cat food.
Tourists down, resort rejected By NOEL MURPHY OVERSEAS tourists are shunning the Surf Coast, according to new statistics. Overall international visitor numbers fell from 28,731 in 2012 to 25,833 last year - a fall of 10 per cent, according to a Surf Coast Shire Visitor Insights report. But international visitors to Torquay climbed from 10,736 to 11,558, a rise of 7.6 per cent, while the Lorne-Anglesea area suffered a 22 per cent drop from 19,317 to 14,996. The Visitors Insights report
said the Surf Coast had 1.67 million visitors last year. They spent an estimated $410.6 million, which rose to a total of more than $602 million with indirect spending. The report was released this week as Surf Coast’s council rejected plans for a caravan park outside Torquay. Council recieved over 200 objections to the scale and intensity of the project. “Council worked with the proponent to ensure the community was engaged about this proposal and a lot of concern was expressed during that process,”
Mayor Rose Hodge said. “Council is required to assess every application on its merits and there are legitimate issues around how this proposal would have affected the non-urban break around the Thompson Valley and the nature of occupancy on the site.” BCR Asset Management’s plan a comprised $105 million inland “Eco Park” with 719 camping sites and cabins on 50 hectares. Council voted unanimously against the plan on grounds including the size of the proposal and its likely impact on the valley.

Top surgeon loses job, slams Barwon Health
By NOEL MURPHY
A ROYAL commission should investigate the national health regulator and hospital administration decisions that adversely affect medical staff and care levels, according to Geelong’s leading paediatric surgeon. Outspoken whistleblower Professor Paddy Dewan, a paediatrician and former Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ Victorian committee chair, had his contract with Barwon Health terminated last week after clashing over a medical case investigation. Prof Dewan told the Independent he raised conflict-of-interest concerns about the person heading the review. Barwon Health then appointed the same person to review its paediatric surgical services, he said.
Prof Dewan said his services were terminated, after 18 years, in favour of Royal Children’s Hospital. Prof Dewan, who planned to lodge his concerns with the Fair Work Commission, compared his termination to the controversial sacking of anaesthetist Mark Colson, which triggered votes of no confidence in the Barwon Health executive. “I’ve lost my contract with Barwon Health,” Prof Dewan said. “I’ve been bullied out of my placement in public health on the basis of unreasonable response to issues I’ve raised. “I’ve been the principal paediatric surgeon for 18 years and the service review didn’t involve a face-to-face meeting. It seems you only review when you know the outcome.”
Prof Dewan has previously attacked the national regulator, Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA), notably over the case of anaesthetist James Peters who infected 55 women with hepatitis while a known risk to the public. Royal Children’s Hospital dismissed Prof Dewan in controversial circumstances after complaints from fellow surgeons. Prof Dewan, who has reported dozens of incidents involving surgeons, told the Independent medical authorities should accept his complaints as challenges to be tackled rather than howled down. “There needs to be a royal commission into the national health regulator and a similar process into outcomes for medical staff from the behaviours of administrators in hospitals - they need to be supported.”
Spokesperson Kate Nelson said Barwon Health no longer needed paediatric surgeons after deciding to use Royal Children’s Hospital’s paediatric surgical services. Three paediatric surgeons would “not have their contracts renewed” as a consequence, she said. “The initiative has been consulted and has broad clinical support.” Ms Nelson said Prof Dewan was given three months’ notice his contract would not be renewed. “In recent weeks Mr Dewan has been recruiting the families of patients to champion his cause. “He has also made a number of demands for Barwon Health to renew his contract. These demands have been accompanied by indications of further consequences if they are not met.”
In brief Egan claim FORMER star Cat defender Matthew Egan has taken legal action over a foot injury that prematurely ended his career. Egan sought damages and costs against Cats sports medicine physician Dr Chris Bradshaw and orthopaedic surgeon Mark Blackney for allegedly negligent treatment of a navicular stress fracture.
Hospital renamed UNIVERSITY Hospital Geelong has been officially adopted as the new name for the city’s public hospital. Barwon Health said the rebranding reflected its “growing and continued collaboration” with Deakin University.
Crash works A $6.9 million safety upgrade will help prevent “run-off road crashes” between Moolap and Drysdale, State Government has announced. MP David Koch said the money would pay for 30km of wire rope barriers and six of guard fencing along Geelong-Portarlington Rd.
Richards refused GEELONG has been left without a representative on a new body overseeing the region’s waste management. A report to Geelong’s council this week said Victoria’s Environment and Climate Change Minister had refused the nomination of Labor candidate Andy Richards to the board of the new group, whose management area stretches from Geelong to the South Australia border.
Blue river A blue tinge has appeared in Anglesea River after recent rain, according to authorities. They advised against contact with the water or eating fish from the river after acidic soils washed into the waterway, affecting its colour.
Marriage issue SAME-SEX marriage has become an issue for Surf Coast’s council after a meeting this week. Councillors voted to express support for gay marriage and to lobby MPs and relevant commissions for changes to laws so same-sex couples could marry.

OVER half a million dollars in community contributions have delivered a new Geelong West facility for families with special-needs children. Gateways Support Services officially opened its new centre this week after gathering $540,000 from
fundraising activities and donations. Gateways contributed $300,000 and State Government added $120,000 to cover the rest of the cost. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said Gateways serviced more than 1300 clients from Geelong, western
Victoria and Melbourne’s west. The new facility would help Gateways meet demand in Geelong West while providing a community venue for social activities, he said. Mr Katos helped open the centre on Monday with Deputy Pre-

Outrage as thug avoids prison By PAUL MILLAR A VICTIMS of crime advocate is outraged a teenage thug who viciously attacked a Lara shop assistant as she sat in her car has been released on a Youth Attendance Order. The victim suffered a fractured eye socket, lacerations to her head, serious bruising to her body and needed plastic surgery. The Norlane woman had
Victim of vicious assault needed plastic surgery parked before heading into work at Lara Shopping Centre when two attackers opened the front doors of her vehicle. A co-accused grabbed the woman, started punching her then dragged her from the vehicle and tossed her to the ground where his accomplice, a 16-year-old,
punched and kicked her until she lost consciousness. Domenic Greco, a psychologist with Victims of Crime, said the decision to release the 16-year-old on a nine-month order was further punishment for the victim. “This is a lose-lose situation
for everybody,” Mr Greco told the Independent. “It’s ridiculous, nonsensical and there’s just no consideration for the victim. You need to have more consideration for the victim when these sentences are handed down. “I just do not understand these
decisions. Of course there should have been a more substantial sentence, there’s something seriously wrong here.”’ Mr Greco said the number and seriousness of crimes involving young offenders appeared to be rising but their sentences seemed increasingly lenient.
“We are re-victimising this poor woman and there’s more consideration for rehabilitating the offender than helping the victim.” The terrifying attack took place mid-morning early last December. The two culprits drove the woman’s car from the scene, leaving her bleeding and terrified. They were reported to have later smashed the car into another vehicle before dumping it in Norlane.
Amit masters servo trade as alternative to IT career Corio’s docks to By NOEL MURPHY host cruise ship WHAT did the master in IT say to the sparkie? Do you want fries with that? Sure, it might sound like a bad joke but for Torquay’s Amit Agrawal it’s in fact a life-changing opportunity reaping dividends he never expected. Rather than circuits, computer chips and information super-highways, his world’s shape-shifted into petrol bowsers, bain-maries, hamburgers and sangers. The small Caltex servo he runs on the Surf Coast Hwy at Torquay with wife Sapana is anything but the ubiquitous mega-stations popping up elsewhere. It only has three bowsers but what it lacks in size it makes up for in heart – and old-style Aussie takeaway tucker that’s increasingly a rarity in these over-driven organic, holistic days. Lengthy early-morning queues and lunchtime frenzies are par for the course at the servo, fronted by a clutch of optimistic palms and nestled under the gums, pines and cypresses of
adjoining Torquay Caravan Park. “It wasn’t what we expected,” Amit laughed while explaining how he came to Australia six years to study for a masters in IT. Sapana was studying cookery. “There just weren’t enough opportunities in Melbourne in IT. A friend’s friend offered me the Caltex station and two years ago we moved to Torquay.” And the servo’s been going gangbusters since with its sub-continental take on trueblue Aussie grub: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken-burgers, salads, sandwiches, wraps, fruit salads and fast-food regulars from spring rolls to dimmies and satay sticks. Sapana said college taught her well, even if she was a little over-qualified. “Life is totally different here after living in Melbourne for five years,” she said. “We start at six in the morning with coffees and toasties, it’s very busy. Then at lunchtime it’s very busy again. “People tell us all the time, ‘You’re making awesome food for Torquay’. We get comments every day.”

A CORIO freight terminal will host a “flagship” cruise ship as Geelong seeks funding for a new pier, Mayor Darryn Lyons has revealed. MV Funchal would use Corio Quay after coming to a “special agreement” with Port of Geelong, he said. “This is a temporary arrangement, so there is an urgent need to have a dedicated cruise ship pier.” City Hall has signed agreement with cruise line Portuscale to host its flagship vessel in Geelong over summer. Cr Lyons has been leading a push to secure government funding for the $30 million Yarra St Pier to berth ships such as the MV Funchal and naval vessels. He said an updated business case, which took into account the Portuscale arrangement, estimated the pier would be worth 430 jobs and $61 million a year to Geelong. The statewide benefit would rise to 522 jobs and $80 million. The business case found that Geelong could host up to 25 cruise ships a year amid a 500 per cent increase in passengers worldwide since 2002, Cr Lyons said. Local suppliers would benefit from the ships taking on provisions of beverages and food worth a “minimum” $300,000 per visit. City Hall has allocated $5 million to the pier project and Royal Geelong Yacht Club has committed $2.5 million.

Myer’s Christmas windows have been enchanting families since 1956, drawing an estimated 1.2 million onlookers each year. “This is a great coup for Geelong,” Cr Lyons said. “The city centre of Geelong will become a special destination at Christmas. And this is just the first stepping stone of something we can be really proud of.

“To assist retailers to make the most of the period, Christmas visual merchandising workshops are being developed along with a best-dressed window competition for central Geelong retailers. “We’re working to secure some fantastic prizes for the winning displays. There will be a people’s choice award along with a judges’ award. “And to keep up the suspense, we’ll unwrap more surprises closer to Christmas!”
POLICE believe the net is closing around an ice addict on the run in Corio over the alleged abduction and probable murder of a Leopold man. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Moolap’s John Nelis as police seek to question him over the disappearance of Paul Kingsbury, a father of one. Police have reported regular sightings of 31-year-old Mr Nelis in Geelong’s northern suburbs. Acting Inspector Boris Buick warned that Mr Nelis was “erratic, prone to violence and we believe that he is armed”. “We think that we are getting closer. He’s still around and he keeps putting his head up,” Act Insp Buick said.
WANTED: John Nelis. Police believe that Mr Nelis had been house-hopping in the area but were unsure whether his hosts were hiding him willingly.
Mr Kingsbury, 27, was last seen in Larkins Lne, Moolap, in the early hours of 6 July. Police believe he had been in contact with Mr Nelis before his disappearance. Mr Kingsbury’s bank account has remained untouched and his mobile phone unused since. A police Fugitive Taskforce has been drafted in to boost local patrols in the search for Mr Nelis. Act Insp Buick urged him to give himself up through his solicitor. “We need him to give his account of what happened. “We suspect that (Mr Kingsbury) is dead and that he met with foul play. We believe that (Mr Nelis) holds the key to why he has gone missing and possibly more.”

Farm jobs’ ‘fast-track’ to delivery sion to move swiftly to maximise the potential benefits of the Sustainable Farms development flowing through to the local economy as quickly as possible. “Sustainable Farms is an Australian-first but, first and foremost, it’s a regionally significant project for Geelong that is planned to create over 1000 jobs and generate $160 million each year for the local economy once the project reaches full scale. “We now look forward to working with Minister Guy and the State Government and we will continue to collaborate with council and engage and inform the local community regarding developments for the proposed project.” The farm would process timber waste to power 60 hectares of hydroponic vegetable production on a 371Ha site at Avalon.
Timber sounds right for Ray’s instruments By NOEL MURPHY
INSTRUMENTAL: Ray Black with a mandolin under construction in his workshop. 126318 Picture: REG RYAN
MAPLE, spruce, blackwood, a little ingenuity and a good ear for the sound timber makes when tapped is the secret to making mandolins and banjos, according to Ray Black. The retired Freshwater Creek farmer, who’s been making instruments for several decades, swears the process is fairly straightforward. “It’s knowing how the thing should sound at different stages,” he said. “The wood varies, it’s never exactly the same even if it’s from the same log. It’s how it flexes in your hands, how it sounds when you tap it. “It’s actually about the sound you have in your head – that’s how I look at it, anyway – so that when you put the top and back together you should have a certain sound at that stage. If it’s not, then you might have to refine the sound by varying the thicknesses.” An artisan’s arcane nous has carried Ray to the upper echelons of instrument-makers in Australia and overseas, catering for musicians playing bluegrass, old-time, Irish traditional and all other genres of acoustic music. Ray says his luthier work is really just a hobby but his name’s become a gold standard among musicians who fete his skills from one end of the country to another. “It’s the sound they’re looking for, that’s the first thing. As a muso, the number one thing is the sound, the quality of the tone, the volume. “A lot of people aren’t sure of what they’re looking for at first...but when they play a handmade they say, ‘Wow’, because it’s so different. “The difference is the playability and the ease of getting the sound of their instrument.”

A FUTURISTIC $320 million farm promising 1000 jobs for Geelong is on a fast-track to reality, according to its proponent. Sustainable Farms welcomed a council decision this week to hand responsibility for the proposal to Planning Minister Matthew Guy. Spokesperson Barry Dungey said it could now be classified a “project of state significance” with faster planning approvals. Sunstainable Farms hoped to have a “planning outcome” by April, Mr Dungey said. “Councillors and Mayor Darryn Lyons have recognised the importance of this $320 million waste-to-energy enterprise to the Geelong region and have worked with a collaborative and constructive approach to getting it off the ground. “We are delighted with (the) deci-

POLICE Command will review resources on the Bellarine Peninsula following community outrage about roster changes. State Government this week announced a six-month review of policing in the region, which would involve “local participation”. Police and Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells asked Chief Commissioner Ken Lay to conduct the review in consultation with the community. Both men toured the region on Tuesday. “The Napthine Government has listened to the people of the Bellarine Peninsula. They want a say in how policing will look into the future and we will provide them an avenue to be heard,” Mr Wells said. “That feedback period will cover the busy summer months when the population on the peninsula rises significantly.” Labor Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville, who spearheaded a campaign against reduced opening hours at stations on the peninsula, said the Government was not serious about addressing local concerns. “If they were serious about this then they’d put an immediate hold on the changes to policing on the Bellarine until the review is complete,” she said. Residents have expressed concern over police plans to wind back opening hours at Drysdale,

Portarlington and Queenscliff stations while increasing patrols from the peninsula’s regional station at Ocean Grove. Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said the review announcement validated the union’s concerns that “the recent downgrading of police stations was made prematurely without public consultation”. “Despite this decision we’re still concerned that Bellarine won’t have a dedicated patrol van at night as it will also cover Geelong and as far as Little River,” the former leading homicide detective said. “On the broader issue of police resources in the City of Greater Geelong, our research shows that we don’t have sufficient numbers of first-response officers to adequately combat the scourge of drug-related crime, family violence and street assaults.” Detective Senior Sergeant Iddles said Greater Geelong had only 196 first-response officers, or police who responded to triple 0 calls. “This number translates to police to population ration of 86 first-response officers for every 100,000 people, well below the state average of 102 for every 100,000. “Our research shows that Greater Geelong needs an additional 53 first-response officers to be on a par with the state average ratio while keeping pace with the eight per cent population growth forecast for the region over the next five years.”

New buy ‘to support refinery’ Viva Energy seeks stake in fuel supplier By PAUL MILLAR VIVA Energy Australia has entered into an agreement to buy a non-controlling stake in fuel supplier Liberty Oil in an early show of commitment to Geelong’s refinery. The deal is subject to regulatory approval but Viva Energy said the Liberty investment was part of a wider program to build demand and improved the outlook for the refinery. Scott Wyatt, Viva Energy’s chief executive officer, said the move would help strengthen local employment. “Liberty operates throughout the country but has a particularly strong business in regional Victoria and neighbouring states, which can be supplied from locally made
production at Geelong Refinery rather than imports,” Mr Wyatt said. “With a well-developed wholesale fuel business, Liberty is already one of our largest customers. I’m excited about this investment as it complements our business, supports local jobs and cements our existing relationship. “We look forward to further strengthening this relationship by supporting Liberty, both as an investor and a reliable fuel supplier.” Liberty distributes hundreds of millions of litres of fuel annually. David Wieland and David Goldberger, partners in Liberty Oil, said the supplier had for many years enjoyed a strong relationship with former refinery owner Shell and expected it to continue with Viva Energy.
“I can assure our customers that little will change under the proposed acquisition by Viva Energy,” Mr Goldberger said. “Not only will the Liberty branding remain but we do not envisage any management or employee changes. Customers will continue to receive the same service level as they do now. “The day-to-day operation and management of the business will not change and David Wieland and I will remain at the helm.” Viva Energy parent company Vitol took over the refinery from Shell this month. Vitol bought the refinery and Shell’s Australian service stations for $2.9 billion. Vitol this month announced a further $150 million investment in the refinery.

Providers ‘lose on NDIS work’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
DISABILITY support agencies are still losing money supplying the NDIS despite an increase in their rates, according to the boss at one of Geelong's biggest service providers. Karginal's Daryl Starkey said the rate for some support services went up from 1 July but still failed to cover the full cost of service delivery. Mr Starkey said the price in June for assistance with self-care activities and to access community, social and recreational activities was $34.18 an hour compared with $40.15 in South Australia. A fortnight later the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), which administers the NDIS, announced an increase to $36.70, claiming it allowed
COSTS: Daryl Starkey. providers to deliver high-quality services. Mr Starkey said the NDIA introduced a transitional price on 1 July of $38.70, which would cease on 30 June 2016. The transitional increase was aimed at helping agencies “ad-
just to the price and to ensure a strong supply of supports into the future". Mr Starkey said the price rise was a small win but more action was needed. A joint NDIA and National Disability Services report found that the prices for this financial year were less than the actual cost of delivering supports, he said. "People with a disability or mental illness and their families should have a skilled, reliable and available workforce," Mr Starkey said. "This difference in pricing impacts support workers and ultimately, the quality of support to people with a disability or mental illness. "Karingal is advocating for higher pricing so we can invest in our people."
Robot dispensing pills at hospital Barwon Health pharmacy director Greg Weeks expected medication safety improvements, financial savings and overall process efficiencies. “The dispensary in the acute site dispenses an average of 3270 outpatient, 3250 inpatient and 10,000 discharge prescriptions items a month,” he said. “Staff workflows have adjusted to the new functionality. Interfacing with pharmacy software was a key hurdle to overcome but teamwork and commitment by all parties has seen a successful robot implementation.”
In the pharmacy, orders are placed on a conveyor belt and the robot automatically handles the stock. It can also spit out orders for wards through a ward box system. Stocktake can be carried out at the press of a button. The system also uses short-dated stock first and can report regularly on expiry dates. The technology also allows the hospital's on-call pharmacist to remotely release stock to an after-hours cupboard for nurse coordinators to access, helping reduce recall payments costs.

ROBOTICS and pills are unusual new bedfellows set to save Barwon Health $250,000 a year. Geelong Hospital is the first Australian hospital to install an advanced robotic system for dispensing medications. Barwon Health expects big savings from the system through reduced stock storage, freeing up staff for other jobs and cutting after-hours demand. Moving faster than a speeding pharmacist and with an impressive whirring sound, it selects drugs based on product barcodes, eliminating human error in the selection and restocking processes.

100% of your fire levy goes to our fire services Last year, the Victorian Government replaced the Fire Services Levy with a fairer system, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission. Now every property owner contributes a fair share to Victoria’s fire services, not just those with adequate insurance. Eligible pensioners and veterans also receive a $50 concession. 100 per cent of the fire levy goes to support greater funding of the operations of the Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade. This includes firefighters, staff and volunteers, training, community education, protective clothing, vital lifesaving equipment and more than 1,200 fire stations and 2,300 trucks. Each year, Victoria’s firefighters attend more than 78,000 incidents, including road accidents and rescues, bush and grass fires, fires in the home, and workplace incidents. It’s a fairer fire levy.

Before coming to Freedom, Laura had spent 75 years in the Salvation Army before suddenly finding herself retired and alone in a large and empty house. A passionate ‘people person’, who loved helping others, she suddenly felt cut off from everything that made her life worthwhile. Like so many ageing Australians Laura craved company and something to live for. Today that ‘something’ is the vibrant, social community, with round the clock nursing care and support at Freedom Aged Care. For Laura, Freedom recognises her increasing frailty and her need to connect with others. Now, when Laura is not relaxing in the privacy of her self-contained Freedom home, you’re likely to find Laura running arts and crafts, watching a movie at the Freedom cinema or sharing a laugh at the Wrinkles Café & Bar. Since making so many new friends and having the care and support at Freedom Aged Care, Laura has blossomed like the bright Spring flowers in the community garden.

Letters Crank up Avalon potential
GPAC project critical to future of Geelong
ONE HOPES Mayor Darryn Lyons continues shaking off his Liberal allegiances and cranks up the potential regional game-changer stocks that Avalon Airport can facilitate(Independent, 22 August). Credit where credit it’s due, Cr Lyons obtusely acknowledges the powerful Melbourne Airport lobby, which aims to put further humps in the way of Avalon achieving its tourism and agriculture/fresh food export potential to burgeoning Asian markets. While it’s encouraging to note the possibility of a New Zealand connection, Cr Lyons is on the money in querying why we don’t get Tiger or Virgin. Central to all of that is why the paltry-yet-key initial outlay of $50 million for a rail spur to Avalon has been shelved. Cr Lyons, who understands how to build enterprise, has the ball at his feet to make an up-andabout Avalon Airport his finest legacy. Richard Worland Manifold Heights
I WRITE in response to a story about Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) in the 14 August Independent, which included a comment by the mayor regarding the need to invest in economic drivers. The mayor would miss an opportunity to lead a critical economic transformation if arts and culture investment was overlooked. While the cost of GPAC’s redevelopment might seem large, the government investment would be repaid in 3.5 years, 1300 jobs would be created, the centre would attract more than four million visitors over 10 years, local cultural life would be enhanced and a landmark regional priority project would be delivered. Geelong is rightly focused
Wrong message for city SORRY, Mayor Lyons, #LiveLoveGeelong (Independent, 22 August) should read #TrucksNoiseDanger for residents along McKillop St. How dare you promote Geelong as a liveable city when you and other councillors support trucks along McKillop St. Pam and Geoff McGarigle East Geelong
JOBS DRIVER: A concept image of the proposed GPAC redevelopment. on creating job opportunities, which would be much easier with a strong cultural environment. Abundant evidence around the world shows that investment in cultural infrastructure delivers jobs and attracts businesses and investments. Many in Geelong believe our focus should be on knowledgebased high-end manufacturing and service industries, whose
government assistance. The increasing number of empty shops is a disincentive for interstate and overseas visitors and needs to be arrested now. I suggest council and government assistance for a campaign of brightening up empty shop windows with either full or partial window displays of our scenic attributes, including spectacular shots of the Great Ocean Road with associated information plus the approximate travelling time from Geelong. Many visitors are woefully ignorant of local geography. Frequently when visiting Lorne we have been approached and asked to point out the 12 Apostles. Their disappointment is apparent when told they need to travel another two hours. All the CBD scenes should be of Victorian sites. I have travelled extensively through all Victorian mountain and coastal areas, of which we have much to be proud. If you’ve got it flaunt it. Cancel the floating Christmas tree and spend the money on the aforementioned project. Back to you, Mr Mayor. ER Hatton Highton
Dim sums for Advertiser I’M NOT surprised to read that the so-called Geelong Advertiser is suffering from dwindling sales (Independent, 15 August) given that a fried dim sim costs 30 cents less and is less likely to cause indigestion. The last pile of unsold Advertisers I saw at the supermarket was about the same height as Wendi Deng. R Graham Belmont
See the sites in CBD GEELONG has coastal and bay vistas the envy of many Australian and overseas visitors. Can they be used to enhance the viability of Geelong’s CBD? Absolutely! The CBD is in a state of despair, which needs
workers will need to be attracted to the region. Numerous studies show that lifestyle is an important factor for such workers in family decisions on where to locate. Cultural assets and associated activities will play a significant role in determining liveability and attractiveness. But Geelong’s cultural assets are limited, ageing and used to capacity. GPAC’s redevelopment is an equal first G21 priority. It is shovel ready with a business case and concept and functional designs. Investment in this project would fast-track the region’s economic transformation. Robert Bett GPAC Trust chairman
A space for activities IN THE interests of Mayor Darryn Lyons’ vision for increased employment and cultural diversity, the Bellarine Peninsula community could consider lobbying for a secure space for multi-purpose activities. Properly run and with moveable internal walls, the space could be adapted to a number of purposes. One use could be a cinema, the nearest of which is presently 25km from Ocean Grove and further from St Leonards, Point Lonsdale, Queenscliff and Drysdale. A cinema would be an invaluable employment-booster. A convention centre could cater for many functions, such as Rotary’s art show, music and dance festivals. Smaller rooms could be used for exercise classes, painting classes and indoor bowls, while schools could also use the space for bands and other activities. The community could deliver this project with visionary forward-thinking and inclusive input. A publicly elected committee of innovative, skilled people backed by the business communities of the peninsula could empower and drive this vision.

The community is growing and becoming more sophisticated in its tastes and needs. Food and wine festivals also spring to mind. Land in Banks Rd at the Marcus Hill Hall site might possibly be a consideration. Jobs are a priority for this region, so hopefully this vision captures Cr Lyons’ innovative imagination. Caring for Croatians I WAS delighted to join Health Minister David Davis last week for the signing of a lease to enable construction of a new aged-care facility in Geelong. A one-hectare site on the former Barton St campus of Western Heights Secondary College, fronting Barton St in Bell Park, is being leased to Victorian Croatian Aged Care Services. Securing this surplus public land will enable this not-for-profit aged-care provider to develop a 100bed residential aged-care facility. With Victoria’s population ageing, the Napthine Government recognises the need for additional aged-care accommodation in Geelong. Unlike the former Labor government in 2010, the coalition made a commitment to provide land for Victorian Croatian Aged Care Services to build a facility for the large Croatian community in northern Geelong. Disappointingly, Member for Lara John Eren, in whose electorate this new aged care facility will be built, has been critical of this initiative and directed social media accordingly to Croatian advocates who worked hard over eight years for the facility. I am glad to have worked with Geelong’s Croatian community to achieve this important outcome and am confident it will serve the community for many years to come. The facility recognises the multicultural community’s contribution and will support many members in their senior years with the service and security they have earned. My congratulations to Victorian Croatian Aged Care Services chairman Joe Pavlovic; Paul Saric, ward councillor Eddy Kontelj and the Croatian community in Geelong for their commitment to this project. David Koch MP Member for Western Victoria

Porter can hold a crowd as well as a skittle, performing in front of audiences across the world as a freelance artist. At Taiwan’s New Year Lantern Festival she helped put on a show in
front of 10,000 locals. Formerly of Brisbane, she has moved to Victoria to work with Circus Oz. Porter said she loved to tour and was keen to help put on a show in Geelong. “There’s a knockabout flying trapeze and the acrobatics on the unicycle by Kyle Lafferty and April Dawson are incredible – it takes a great deal of guts and strength,” she said. Porter noted the close bond between the artists comes across in touring shows as they worked together, for each other and the audience. “It’s a real family atmosphere,” she said. “We work hard and enjoy each other’s company.”

THE CIRCUS is coming to town – but not as it’s traditionally known. Circus Oz, an alternative to big-top shows with caged animals as their main attraction, will bring its own brand of entertainment to Geelong next week. The circus, which combines impersonators, comedy and sharp, topical wit with live music, acrobats and jugglers, will perform at Geelong Performing Arts Centre from 4 to 6 September. Operating since 1978, the circus could argue it harks back to the early days of circuses when they performed without animals. Olivia Porter, an out-ofthe-ordinary juggler, rattled off the extraordinary feats of colleagues accompanying her on the circus’s But Wait… There’s More tour. “We’re bringing a whole bunch of different events to Geelong,” Porter said between breaks in training. She got the bug to join the travelling entertainers in Circus Oz as a schoolgirl working at a cafe when a woman came in with brochures promoting an upcoming show. “I said, ‘I’d love to do that’, and the woman gave me some information and I was hooked.” Now 27-years-old and with endless hours of practice under her belt, Porter said she had developed a unique style of juggling as entertainment. She described it as movement-

Steak a claim at Little River
FOR DINERS after something different, a short trip to Little River for the hotel’s Wednesday night $15 steaks is well worth the effort. The popular pub is a short walk from the train station, so patrons can feel free to down a couple of drinks in safety. The reward is the grain-fed beef expertly transformed by steak specialist chef Trevor Riseley and cooked to the customer’s liking. The country-style venue takes pride in its charming atmosphere with old-fashioned friendly service. The hidden gem is set on an acre of land, so children have plenty of play space – there’s even a park across the road – while families enjoy the childfriendly setting indoors. Whether it’s for lunch or dinner, Little River Hotel is a snug spot to while away a couple of hours during winter enjoying one of the cosy fires. The hotel also has a TAB and Keno to keep patrons entertained with a flutter. Nestled conveniently between Lara and Werribee, Little River Hotel offers the best of both worlds. Patrons can catch the happy hour between 6pm and 7pm Friday nights, drop in for a parmi on

ATTENTION TRADIES OR THE HOME HANDYMAN Visitors will need an elevated perspective to appreciate the neat, discrete fit of AllClear Leafguard.
Gutter guards saves hassles
ALLCLEAR Leafguard can save householders all the hassles associated with leaves blocking gutters and creating a fire hazard. Made from hardy Colorbond steel, AllClear Leafguard has many benefits including protecting and prolonging the life of gutters. With AllClear Leafguard, gone are the days of spending hours of valuable weekend time up a ladder cleaning out gutters by hand. Keeping gutters clear of leaves prevents overflowing, which can cause water damage to homes. The annual threat of bushfire presents a pressing need for home-owners to protect their properties, especially over the summer months. One of the ways of limiting the threat is ensuring gutters are free of leaves and any other flammable debris that could easily catch fire and lead the flames to the body of the home.
AllClear Leafguard’s construction in Colorbond steel - the same material as guttering - prevents the product melting in fire or perishing and becoming brittle. Leafguard stops embers and burning leaves getting under the roofline. Without leaves on the roof or in gutters, bushfire embers have nothing to burn, so they sit smoldering until they go out. Households in fire-prone areas are always urged to get their gutters fitted with metal leafguards to protect against potential bush fire. AllClear Leafguard is secured under roof tiles or iron and to the front of guttering. When the Leafguard is in place it cannot be seen from the ground, so it does not ruin the appearance of the roof. AllClear Leafguard is designed especially for the collection of clean water for rainwater tanks. The best way to save valu-

Connecting people and communities
Plot course to career change TAKING the leap and changing a career path can be challenging, especially for anyone with a young family and after many years in the same job. However, sometimes life throws a curveball and forces a rethink of career choice. Steve Perkins worked at Avalon Airport as an aircraft sheetmetal worker for almost 10 years until 18 months ago when he was made redundant. He then had to decide where his career would take him next. Having spent many years in the workshop, he missed working in a job where he could interact more with others. After some soul-searching, Steve set out to study for a career in aged care and disability work.
Encompass College of Education and Training can set students on a new career path. “A friend highly recommended Encompass College of Education and Training, he says. “The benefit of studying at Encompass is that the trainers have hands-on experience and are
currently working in the industry. Knowing that Encompass Community Service is a disability services provider was a clear bonus. Steve completed a dual qualification: Certificate III in Aged Care and Certificate IV in Disability. He says the administration staff were very friendly, accommodating and helpful. “I finished slightly earlier than the other students due to the way my dual qualification was set-up. The staff fast tracked my certificate and organised the placement for me, allowing me to complete it early. “I couldn’t have asked for more. Steve is now a disability support worker for Encompass’ Options and Connections Division.

KARINGAL Training offers a Certificate II in Community Services for individuals seeking to work or volunteer in residential facilities or community services. The course also provides a pathway into further education and prepares graduates to work in a variety of community roles such as children’s services, aged care, mental health, disability support and home help. The qualification provides participants with the perfect introduction to the community services industry. Modules focus on supporting community service organisations and resources and working with people with a disability or mental illness and disadvantaged youth. Workers at this level might provide ancillary assistance such as catering, cleaning, laundry gardening and home maintenance, customer services and other domestic or care-service duties. “The course is particularly suited to those looking to work or volunteer in residential facilities or in community services, says Brett Cassar, Karingal Training manager. “It provides a pathway into further education and prepares graduates for work in children’s services, aged care, mental health, disability support and home help.

IndySport Echoes of Kennedy in Squid appear in coach’s call for action Queenscliff area
On the
bite
Chris Pitman
By PAUL MILLAR
LARGE squid were taken in the Queenscliff area over the past week. Anglers casting size 3 or 3.5 jigs such as Yamashita Live on a slow drift caught southern calamari to 2kg. Whiting to 40cm were also taken around Queenscliff during the run-out tide on tenderised squid. Queenscliff Harbour produced silver trevally to 45cm, particularly on the ever-reliable Gulp Pumpkin seed-colour turtleback worm when fished around the change of tide. I walked the beach at Collendina while casting 25g lures on Sunday afternoon. Australian salmon to 1kg were on the bite, with the tide change productive. The Barwon River estuary continued fishing well on bait, with outstanding bream to 44cm taken on Bass yabbies. The dirty water over the weekend made fishing with soft plastics and hardbody lures difficult. Anglers moving down to the mouth of the river at run-in tide using pippies for bait are finding the best results on Salmon to 1kg. Clifton Springs attracted many anglers seeking squid but strong north winds dirtied the water, limiting captures. The northerlies were favourable on the other side of the bay off the quarries where numerous boats sought early-season snapper. None reported catching any fish but it’s a spot worth watching in the coming month. Alex and Dave Haygarth travelled down to the Surf Coast estuaries in search of bream. Casting hard-body lures and soft plastics they landed a 34cm fish that put up an excellent fight in shallow water. Fishing World Geelong’s Michael Moore ventured down to Lake Purrumbete at day-break on Saturday to find near-perfect conditions for slow trolling. Michael caught brown trout and Chinook salmon to 900g on an OSP dunk. Interestingly, Michael was landing a small salmon when an extremely large trout charged in to take a big bite out of the Chinook. The Barwon River around Queen’s Park produced some beastly carp. Corn cornels and scrubworms fished amid berley worked well. Marshell Pardee travelled up to Lake Bostock on Sunday after experiencing some success on fly the previous week. This time he tried Powerbait, landing five Chinook salmon to 1kg. Anglers who put in plenty of casts at Moorabool Reservoir were rewarded with redfin to 45cm and brown trout of 1.5kg. The most productive lures were Strike Pro Bob ‘N’ Spoons. Lake Bullen Merri fished well for Chinook salmon on pilchard fillet allowed to drift slowly to the bottom. Noel Porter and Stan Daglas boated fish to 1.8kg using this technique. Settled weather this weekend could be an opportunity to fish for early-season snapper or chase squid at Queenscliff. Otherwise, spinning for salmon down the coast should be productive. In freshwater, Lake Bullen Merri should produce Chinook salmon and Purrumbete could be worth trying for trophy brown trout.

PLENTY has changed in footy since the blood sweat and beer days of the 1970s but some things remain the same. In the 1975 grand final, between Hawthorn and North Melbourne, legendary Hawks coach John Kennedy, the man with the Columbo raincoat, urged his charges to lift with a stirring speech at the long break. “At least do something! Do something,” Kennedy roared. “Don’t think, don’t hope, do.” But North overwhelmed the Hawks despite Kennedy’s rousing oration. Wind the clock forward almost 40 years and the message from Geelong coach Chris Scott this week ahead of Saturday night’s game against the Brisbane Lions, could have come from the same handbook. “I reckon what you do is more important than what you think,” he told this weeksmedia conference. Scott will be hoping his charges have enough in the tank and the mental toughness to overcome second-half fade-outs. The latest, when the Hawks came back from 31 points behind at half-time to win by 23 points at the MCG last weekend, was a major concern. Scott, however, preferred to concentrate on the positives from the first-half effort when the Cats were full of running and had 100 more possessions than the Hawks. “We did not put the cue in the rack at halftime,” Scott said “It was not devastating to our season.” However, heading into the finals he also knows that Geelong will be punished for any lapses, especially a failure to push home early dominance. The players had taken the message on board, he suggested. “We’re confident for our own reasons. We do not need to spell them out publicly,” Scott said. He will be cautious about deciding who takes the field on Saturday, with a wary eye on injuries and the finals. But Scott was also concerned about making wholesale changes. “One of the risks you take is if you go in with a completely different team you lose momentum with the things you’re trying to work on. “We don’t see any need to flirt with our structure too much…but we’d be crazy to risk any players. That’s the bottom line. “On balance, I’d say we’ll be slightly more conservative this week than we were last.” The last time the Lions defeated Geelong at Simonds Stadium was round six, 2003 - Brisbane’s last premiership year. When the two sides met at the same time and same venue last year the Cats doused the Lions’ finals hopes and claimed second spot on the ladder with a one-point win.
THE scene is set for a classic this weekend when North Geelong Warriors take on Richmond SC in National Premier League. A win will give the Warriors a stronghold on second place and extend their ladder lead on third-placed St Albans by six points. But with dangerous forwards like Tom Cahill and Hamlet Armenian, Richmond will seek a return to form after earning just one point from its past three matches. Richmond’s recent match against Moreland was another game in which it dominated the play but was unable to make the opposition pay. North Geelong notched up a regulation 2-0 win over a youthful Whittlesea last week in a match limited for highlight-reel moments.
The home side needed to maintain it focus and composure of recent weeks to continue the run of wins to eight in a row. Ranges’ Kliment Dimitrieski tried to spark things early with a bicycle kick that went well over the goal but that was the sum of his side’s potency, with few other chances rattling the hosts. North settled after Vito Cichello opened the scoring on 20 minutes with a shot from 30-odd metres out. The ball spiralled high and caught the keeper back-pedalling before lodging into the top-right corner. The Warriors sustained their pressure but without further addition to the score before half time. On 54 minutes Robbie Zadworny received a through ball by Cichello, allowing him to zip past his opponent
GOAL: Vito Chichello enjoying last weekend’s win. Picture: IVAN DUGANDZIC and chip over oncoming Rasohlzaden Syesan to extend the lead. North Geelong should have had several more, with Reardo Luka, Mark
Paleka and Nicholas Jurcic misdirecting attempts on goal. The match fizzled out in the end as consecutive injuries to Whittlesea’s keepers left Dimitrieski as its only threat, seeing the match out in the sticks. North Geelong coach Mick Colina was happy with the win. “We were controlled and the only disappointment was not putting away more chances. We now need to turn our attention to Richmond.” Whittlesea coach Vinko Buljubasic, who formerly coached North Geelong, was happy to be back at Elcho Park. “I coached some of these guys and they’re a top side. It’s great to see,” he said. “I can’t fault my players. They’re a young team and they’re constantly developing.”

CUSTOMERS rely on the fine-tuned expertise of German Automotive to ensure they are prepared for any lengthy trip. The German car specialist made its own road trip recently in a short move along Autumn St to a revamped workshop, which will be the business’s new headquarters. General manager Ben Buckle says German Automotive always tries to improve its service to customers. “While the move from 43 to 8 Autumn St, in Geelong West, might not be much in distance it has allowed us to upgrade and expand our workshop, fitting it out with the best equipment available,” he says. The German Automotive team specialises in European brands, specifically Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Audi and Skoda. “We’re set up to dealer standard for these brands and take great pride in meeting the needs of our customers who have come to rely on us over the years,” Ben says. “We’ve invested heavily in both training and state-of-the-art equipment and two of our staff recently returned from training overseas. This allows us to work on current models with no effect on manufacturer’s warranty at all.” The team at German Automotive uses genuine parts sourced from European suppliers and seeks customer authorisation before proceeding with any major repairs. The workshop is equipped with dealer-standard diagnostic equipment to quickly track down any vehicle problems. Ben and the team are very proud of the new German Automotive premises and invite all customers - new and existing - to visit the new facilities.

THE ORIGINAL
Liveable City By DEREK OGDEN
1151357-ACM35-14
IndyMotor LIVEABILITY is often bandied about to describe the quality of being comfortable and convenient to live in, especially when defining towns and cities. The word could well be applied to Honda’s new City. The new City is a stylish light sedan that delivers value for money through fuel economy and top-line specification, the latter the result of the Japanese manufacturer trawling the world to discover how owners use their vehicles, what they like and dislike, how they live and what their future plans are. A common theme emerged - their reliance on smartphones, which travel with them constantly, hence the truly integrated experience on offer with the new City. The car comes powered by Honda’s upgraded 1.5-litre iVTEC petrol engine in three versions - Vti manual and automatic and VTi-L automatic - coming to market from $15,990 to $21,885, plus on-road costs. The City follows fashion with the sedan curving front to back in a way that copies coupe shapes. The nose-down front emphasises the vehicle width with an aero-style bumper and incorporated air inlets. A strong so-called character line connects front and rear and

Bluesman Jimmy Reed just about sums it up: ‘Bright Lights, Big City.’ is distinguishable, says the maker, equally in bright sunlight or cloudy conditions. Flared rear wheel arches add substance to the profile while the rear lamp clusters are brought together by a chrome licence plate surround. The spacious passenger cabin is a place where the latest technology takes a prominent position in the form of Honda’s state-ofthe-art Display Audio and Multi Information Display. Here connectivity is king. Central to the Honda Display Audio system is the seven-inch colour touch screen which is centrally located on the dashboard in
easy reach of the driver and frontseat passenger. It enables Bluetooth connectivity for Apple and Android smartphones, including audio streaming, plus HDMI audio and video playback, the latter with the vehicle at a standstill and the handbrake on. Display Audio also integrates Apple’s Siri reducing the time the driver needs to take their eyes off the road.
