The bond between Craig Geeves and cat Sully proved a life-saver. 126879

Smoke detector CRAIG Geeves has no doubt he owes his life to his cat, Sully. “I’m pretty sure I would have died in that room if Sully hadn’t woken me; she saved my life, he told the Mail last week after escaping a fire that destroyed his Wandin home. Firefighters from six brigades responded to the 1am call on Monday, 1 September, but were unable to save the house. Craig is not surprised that the cat he has developed such a strong bond with

over the past eight years went to such extremes to wake him. “She was screaming and pawing at my chest with a low-down guttural scream that woke me up, he said. “I’m a heavy sleeper ... it takes two alarm clocks to wake me and you can see (from the damage) that by the time the fire reached to my bedroom it was an inferno. He could smell the smoke straight away, but said when he opened the bedroom door, with Sully in his arms, a pall of smoke hit him in the face.

Throwing Sully into the garden and out of harm’s way, he raced back in to try to extinguish the fire. He was driven out when the kitchen ceiling, where he believes the fire started and where the smoke alarm was located, began to fall in on him. Craig lost collections of antiques and tools, as well as irreplaceable photos and videos in the fire. The jeans he was wearing, a box of coins he managed to grab as he escaped, and Sully, are all he has left to start afresh, but he says he consid-

He searched for a year to find the right cat and says there was an instant connection when they met at Blue Cross Animal Society. “I’d looked at lots and lots of cats, but she was special. By MELISSA MEEHAN MONTROSE pre-schoolers will benefit from $10,000 funding from the State Government. Sarah Court Preschool will use the funding for an upgrade to its outdoor play area which will include a new cubbyhouse. “This is great news for local families as their children will be able to directly benefit from these upgraded early years services,” Mr O’Donohue said. “I am so pleased that this funding will provide better facilities for our fantastic local kindergartens, including upgraded playgrounds and improved storage space,” Monbulk candidate Mark Verschuur said. The grants are a result of the State Government building a better Victoria by supporting 643 Victorian kindergartens and children’s centres to upgrade their facilities and IT systems through $2.9 million in grants. Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Wendy Lovell said the grants were crucial to ensuring Victorian early years services could continue to deliver world-class learning programs for Victorian families. “Victoria already leads the nation in early childhood education and care, and by improving early years facilities and infrastructure, we are making Victoria an even better place for families to raise their children,” Ms Lovell said. Sarah Court Preschool will host its first annual Healthy Harvest Festival on Saturday 13 September, and is bringing much of the Montrose community along for the ride. The event is a celebration of healthy local living and its aim is to inspire people to buy lo-

A KALLISTA man in his late twenties has died after the ute he was driving lost control and veered off the road down an embankment. It is believed a utility was travelling along Wellington Road, Clematis near Magpie Road early Monday morning. A passer-by discovered the crash and contacted emergency services just before 6.30am. The male driver died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified. Cardinia Highway Patrol Sergeant Allen Inderwisch said that police will still investigating the cause of the accident, but believed the man may have been on his way to work not long before 5.30am and fell asleep at the wheel. “We don't believe speed, drugs or alcohol were a factor,” he said. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Hairdresser gets a spray ABUSIVE graffiti was scrawled across a Cockatoo hairdressing salon shopfront over the weekend. Emerald Police are investigating the graffiti attack that they believe occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning. Sergeant David Calkin said the abusive graffiti was written with wax sticks. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. The festival’s celebration of all things local piqued the interest of the Montrose Traders Association and after several brainstorm sessions, a unique partnership was formed.

Minor injuries A 22-YEAR-OLD from Chirnside Park was taken to hospital with minor injuries after a single motorcycle crash in Gembrook. Sergeant David Calkin said the man fell off his motorcycle on Gembrook - Launching Place Road, and it was a timely reminder for riders to realise after a winter hiatus their riding skills might not be up to speed. “It might be a good time for riders to do a refresher course,” he said.

Foster care to show compassion By CAITLIN McARTHUR WITH demand for foster care in Victoria at an all-time high one Mount Evelyn couple are doing their best to make a difference. Yvonne and John Dykstra said they got involved in foster care because they “wanted to do a good thing”. The Dykstras have been foster carers for 10 years and have provided much needed respite for carers, single parents and families in difficult situations. The couple have cared for five kids in that time, usually on weekends. “It’s a commitment but we don’t mind, it keeps us young,” Mr Dykstra said. “To become a foster carer has some great rewards. It plays an important part in the children’s lives and has a positive impact,” Mr Dykstra said. The Mount Evelyn couple are currently caring for two siblings under 12 one weekend a month. “Their mum can see a huge improvement in their relationship,” Mr Dykstra said. “Also there is the role model of a man in their visits, because they don’t see their dad,” Mr Dykstra said. Mr Dykstra said having someone else in their life, outside of

Yvonne and John Dykstra say being a foster carer has many rewards. 126489 their family, can make a real difference to the kids. “The difference in the boys has been huge. Not only does fostering benefit the children and their mum, but also the families that take them in,” Ms Dykstra said. The Dykstra family have also had two of their daughters involved in foster care. “Our daughter, Tamara, became involved through Anglicare’s Friends of Foster Care program,” Mr Dykstra said, adding that another had been involved in respite care.

Mr Dykstra said it isn’t just kids from struggling families that enter the program. Some carers have children fulltime and are in need of respite too, Mr Dykstra said. He said he would certainly encourage people to try and get involved, not just for the kids but also for themselves. “For us it’s putting back into the community something of value that will last in the lives of the children” Mr Dykstra said. According to Anglicare Victoria there is a shortfall of carers in

Victoria with demand far outstripping supply. Anglicare Victoria is using National Foster Care Week to raise awareness of the issue and encourage people to step up and give it a go. “Whoever you are, whatever your background, beliefs and experiences might be, please think about being a foster carer,” Anglicare CEO Paul McDonald said. Carers can contribute in a number of ways including emergencies for one or two nights, short-time care up to a few months or longterm care for up to two years or more. Mr McDonald said anyone who can provide a stable environment to a child in need is eligible to become a foster carer. The care required differs for every child and carers can choose what type of care they provide based on their personal situation. “Just as every child is different, so too are foster carers,” Mr McDonald said. Mr McDonald said people can become carers regardless of their relationship or marital situation, sexual orientation or working situation. National Foster Care Week is running from 14 to 20 September. Anglicare Victoria will be running information nights for the rest of the year for those interested in becoming a foster carer.

Mr Maloney said it had been well over 12 months since the concept originated, which will see the RSL honour 32 fallen soldiers. “We’ve been searching the world to get photos of them and we want to celebrate their lives,” he said. Ranges Ward councillor Leticia Wilmot, Geoff Spring, Peter Maloney, Ranges Ward councillor Brett Owen and Cardinia Shire mayor Graeme Moore can't wait for the finished Anzac Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Walk to be unveiled. 126415 council will sign off on, and we expect to be turning soil on 1 October,” he said. “It won’t take long once the boys get moving on it, and I am to have it finished by Christmas. “We’d hope to have an official opening with all the politicians and the people from the various departments who have helped us here in February. “This project is something that Emerald’s never seen before.” In essence, it’s bringing the history back to a new generation of residents. The RSL’s plan is to have eight information stands which would have four pictures of soldiers with a short notation on

their individual histories. The Anzac Walk, which will be interactive, will eventually link up to Emerald’s Heritage Walk - a tourist trail through Emerald. The Mail understands that the Anzac football clash between Emerald and Gembrook-Cockatoo could be revived next season, with both clubs back in the same division of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League. An Anzac play depicting life in Emerald in 1914 could also open at Emerald’s Gemco Theatre in time for next year’s Anzac centenary and, finally, the Emerald RSL has also commissioned a Statue of the Unknown Soldier.

Increase in most crimes By JESSE GRAHAM FAMILY violence, drug offences and road fatalities have all soared in the Yarra Ranges, though police say robberies and burglaries are sharply declining. Victoria Police released crime statistics for the 2013-'14 financial year on Wednesday, 27 August, comparing crime rates with the year before. Rates of family violence increased by 18 per cent, with 426 offences recorded in the last financial year, compared with 360 in 2012-’13. Road fatalities rose from 3 to 12 between the two periods, while drug offences rose 13 per cent and theft from

motor vehicles rose 17.1 per cent, Crime rates increased by 13.5 per cent overall. Yarra Ranges Inspector Matthew Anderson said thefts from motor vehicles were opportunistic, and could be easily avoided. “Items of value are also still being left in vehicles visible to offenders,” Insp Anderson said. “Please be smart when it comes to your property and valuables - lock up and don’t tempt thieves.” Chief Commissioner Ken Lay said that family violence rates increasing were the result of people having more confidence in coming forward to police.

He said that people were also coming forward with historical cases of sexual abuse in the aftermath of the Parliamentary Inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and other Non-Government Organisations, resulting in a state-wide increase in family violence statistics. “We’re really seeing a flow-on effect as victims of this horrendous crime feel more comfortable to report these matters to police, confident they will be investigated no matter how much time has passed,” he said. Family violence rates have continually risen in each release of statistics by the police, with a 20 per cent increase

marked in June’s statistic release. Insp Anderson said that robbery and burglary, which fell 6.3 per cent and 12.2 per cent, were key issues that police were working to prevent. “Targeted patrols and investigations will continue to further encourage residents to lock their property at all times,” he said. Insp Anderson said that road policing would be a priority for Yarra Ranges police, and he reminded drivers to ensure they kept their vehicles roadworthy and obeyed speed limits. Mr Lay said overall crime rates had risen consecutively in the last three years, and that police would be re-

evaluating how to prevent and address crimes. “While the traditional model of policing is serving us well in pushing down crime in areas such as robberies, burglaries and theft, we need to look at a new way to address emerging crime trends,” he said. “It’s important Victoria Police becomes a flexible organisation, ready to dedicate specialist resources to emerging issues such as organised crime, our community’s battle with ice, cybercrime, historical sex abuse and deceptions.” For more information, visit www. police.vic.gov.au.

A proud firey for 65 years By ANEEKA SIMONIS MONTROSE Fire Brigade was proud to grant its first 65-year service award to valued member Jack Verity. Mr Verity joined the brigade in 1949 as one of its founding members and was a major face of change to local and national emergency rescue. He was a leader in designing tankers and ancillary equipment in his early years as well as building the brigade’s own original motorised hose washer. Member protection was also a major concern of Mr Verity, who was instrumental in introducing the first type of protective clothing worn by rural firefighters. The brigade’s logo, used on uniforms until the CFA introduced its own badge, also marked another contribution by Mr Verity who was in charge of its design.

But it wasn’t just his creative ingenuity that will be remembered from his 65 years in service. Mr Verity was a leader in fire prevention during the 1960s-’70s, helping local committees establish prevention planning strategies for bushfire season and a passionate educator. Mr Verity made his way up the ranks, rising to first lieutenant in 1963, holding the title for 22 years until his retirement in 1989. Remaining an active member since then, the brigade said his contributions had been invaluable. “His leadership qualities were well-known around Region 13 and beyond. “On many occasions, he stepped in to fill a void in the management team of a major fire with great expertise and little fuss. He acted as a crew leader or crew member on numerous away calls all over Vic-

toria and New South Wales. “He also spent hours guarding the old FRS phone system and attending fire calls both home and away. He has attended numerous rural bushfires and structure fires, incidents and MVAs ... too many to mention let alone to individualise them,” they said in a statement. Over the years, Mr Verity received many medals for his contribution to the community including several service awards and the National Medal with first and second clasps. But in 1999, his hard work, dedication and ingenuity was memorialised when the then captain instigated a new merit award named in his honour. The Montrose community was proud to honour Mr Verity with the Country Fire Authority’s service award at the Montrose CFA’s dinner dance on Saturday 2 August.

Jack has been a dedicated member of the brigade and well-supported by his wife Shirl. 126083

Vintage love CLASSIC cars and bikes will brighten Monbulk’s main street for the second straight year on Sunday as part of an event to showcase what the community has to offer. Buses, cyclists, skateboarders and roller bladers are making way for six hours to enable enthusiasts to admire and discuss the vintage machinery which will be angleparked along the road. Organiser John Coleman said it would be a great sight for visitors. “There will be the best of the breeds, strutting their stuff and showing themselves in their finery,” Mr Coleman said. “To make the day extra special, any money raised by way of entry fees and donations will be di-

Southern Dandenong Landcare Group’s Anne Elizabeth encouraged families to come down to the event which will feature music, games, a play and even a quiz. The festival aims to raise awareness about a family of platypus living in Monbulk Creek and the loss of their habitat. “There are less than 20 platypuses in the creek now due to the degradation of their habitat” Ms Elizabeth said. The platypuses at the creek are counted four times a year. Ms Elizabeth said there will be more information on how the community can get involved in their conservation on the day. “We want to raise awareness of them being there and of the importance of our water

Principal Cathy Jones, who teaches alongside three other fulltimers and two part-time specialists, said it was a privilege to be involved at a school with such a rich history. “The community up in the hills is just fantastic and it’s great when people drop in with stories to tell or to drop off memorabilia,” Ms Jones said. “There is definitely a tight bond at the school and everybody works together to get the best out of everybody, especially the kids. “It’s fantastic that way.” Ms Jones has been involved in a variety of schools and said what made Sassafras Primary School dif-

She said the school’s motto was ‘Nurturing Excellence’. “There was a school review when I came here and we went through and looked at our values again and our motto and said, ‘is that what we really believe in?’ and we do,” Ms Jones said. “We revisited it to make sure it’s still current... and parents really be-

lieved in it and students as well. “I like to say we’ve had success for every child, because we cater for all our kids. “Every child is very special and we do the best for every child who comes through our door.” Ms Jones said parental involvement and support and “outstanding” teachers were what made the school special. One former parent, Rowan Smith, wrote a book The Heart of the Hills to mark Sassafras Primary School’s centenary and is updating it with stories from the past 20 years and earlier. Ms Jones invited people previously associated with the school to come forward with their stories and memories. The reunion will be held on Sunday 16 November from 10am to 2pm. “We’d just like to invite everybody to come to our celebrations, because we know this school is special to a lot of people,” Ms Jones said. “We’re asking people to send their addresses and the addresses we have we will try and send invites to.” The 120th celebrations are also set to be promoted outside the school, in the community and on the school’s website www.sassafrasps. vic.edu.au.

ways,” Ms Elizabeth said. The event, which usually attracts a crowd of between 400 and 500, will feature a play written specifically for the event by local environmentalist Vicki Boyle. Ms Elizabeth said the play will be about the creation of the platypus according to Aboriginal stories and legends. The kids will also be given the opportunity to participate with costumes and roles in the performance. The quiz will focus on identifying the sounds of native wildlife and the winner can look forward to a small prize. Local musicians Bodhrun Bush Band will be performing songs it has written for the platypus specifically for the event. The festival, which is being run by the Southern Dandenong Landcare Group and the Friends of Belgrave Park, is expected to be opened by councillor Samantha Dunn. The event is free and runs from 1pm to 4pm.

GEE Jays Fashions may have changed suburbs in recent years, but offering a wide range of fashion items and a friendly experience is still at the heart of the business. Opening in the Boronia Mall in 2004, the shop - named after owner Jacinta Pettiford (Jay) and her husband Glenn (Gee) - has now moved to Upwey, where the owners grew up and live. Jacinta said the new location of the shop - on Main Street, Upwey - was optimal for hills residents, and offers the fashion shopping experience without the stress and sterility of big shopping centres. Gee Jays Fashions sells ladies clothing up to size XXL, handbags, jewellery, accessories and giftware on offer, with labels such as Sun, Wish Stone, Leoni and Wakee on the racks. Anyone wanting to accessorise doesn’t need to look further than Gee Jays, with necklaces, watches and more to help add the final touches to a new outfit. Jacinta said the range doesn’t end in the shop - customers can come along with ideas of items they’re after, and the friendly staff would try to source them. She said the personable atmosphere was one of the keys to the business, and urged anyone passing by to stop in, have a browse or a cuppa. “We would love to meet and get to know you,” she said. Gee Jays Fashion is located at 52-54 Main Street, Upwey, and is open from Monday-Friday, 9.30am-5pm and Saturdays from 9.30am-4pm. For more information, call 9739 8065.

The house has mains gas ducted heating for the ultimate in comfort. The new kitchen features stainless appliances and plenty of cupboard space and overlooks the lounge via a convenient servery counter. There are new floor coverings, window furnishings, an air conditioner for the warmer months and a stylish finish throughout that is sure to impress. Outside on the fully fenced quarter acre visitors will find established gardens, a double lock-up garage with concrete floor and power and a generous undercover deck out the back for entertaining. The selling agent said that inner city style does exist in the hills.

 Connecting people with local sport…

Winning ways spelled out By RUSSELL BENNETT ONE of Australia’s most noted leadership experts, Richard Maloney the son of Emerald RSL president Peter - launched his new book recently which cuts to the core of both sporting club and business culture. A strong culture is something the greatest sporting teams have, with those at the bottom aspiring to replicate it. Maloney is a former highly successful state league football player in his own right, winning multiple premierships. He has been associated with eight elite sporting organisations across the country, helping 39 teams to grand finals with 24 going on to win premierships. He has worked closely with Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League (YVMDFL) powerhouse Upwey Tecoma, as well as the the cricket club, in addition to the Yarra Valley Old Boys in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). But Maloney’s programs have also been implemented at the professional elite level, including at AFL club the Western Bulldogs. Dogs stars Matthew Boyd and Shaun Higgins attended the launch of his book and raved about the work Maloney had done at the club. ‘The Minds of Winning Teams’, his new book, is somewhat of a handbook for businesses and sporting clubs seeking to reinvent their

cultures and fast-track a more productive and profitable environment. Maloney offers a strategic breakdown of the key components of leadership structure - providing specialised practical exercises that can be implemented into any organisation to create quick and effective change. He also provides in-depth interviews with some of Australia’s sporting icons, including Australian Test cricket legend Justin Langer, Australia’s most successful female Olympian Rechelle Hawkes and former AFL and NFL player Ben Graham. “It’s about how to create change in a fast and effective way that’s measureable,” Maloney told the Mail. “The key message is that engagement is the new leadership. “We’ve got to get people engaged first before your leadership message really takes shape. “The key message in the book is that it’s all about activation, not knowledge dumping these days. “Especially in the sports industry - guys don’t have time to be taking notes and learning what sort of personality they are. We get people inspired to work together on a common goal with a clear vision and then there’s a whole energy shift within a team or organisation.” For more information, visit www.engageandgrow.com.au.

Versatile soccer player Clare Di Stefano has been selected to represent Victorian Churches Football Association Picture: JARROD POTTER at the national championships. 126567

Teen stream of soccer success By JARROD POTTER WHETHER defending the goals or streaming through the midfield, Monbulk soccer player Clare Di Stefano is charging ahead with her beloved sport. Di Stefano, 15, from Emerald, has been selected as a goalkeeper for the Victorian Churches Football Association (VCFA) under-16 team, set to take on the rest of the country at the Christian Football Federation Australia (CFFA) National Championships, held this year in Sydney. She splits her local soccer between Monbulk’s Division 1 Churches league team and the under-18s in Football Federation Victoria (FFV) competition. She’s quirky for a goalkeeper as that’s not where she always likes to play - splitting her time between keeping for Monbulk in the Churches league and playing as a midfielder/wing for her FFV league team. While she loves the goals most of all, sometimes a change is good to stay fresh and interested in the sport.

“I’m probably better in goals, but I still like to have a shot on the field,” Di Stefano said. “I do enjoy goals probably a bit more. “They (Monbulk FFV) ask me all the time if I want to play keeper with them, but I want to have a shot out on the field. “I love being keeper, but once you’re a keeper, you stay there.” She’s excited to get out and don the Victorian colours again as her prior experience a couple of years ago was a great learning curve. “It’s a bit of good fun - last time we did it felt like a professional set-up - so it would be fun to do our best and try to win, but we’ll see how we go,” she said. On the horizon of her soccer progression, she wants to aim towards the North American college system and is already within a scouting and recruiting program to help her develop. Last year, without a VCFA team to represent at the nationals, Di Stefano turned to cycling and completed the 610-kilometre Great Victorian Bike

Race, traversing the roads from Mount Gambier to Geelong. “I just did it for fun as I enjoy fitness - there wasn’t a team for this (soccer) last year, so I thought I’d give it a go,” Di Stefano said. “Bit of an accomplishment to see other people stopping and knowing you can do it.” Di Stefano wanted to thank her family, coaches and Monbulk for their support of her soccer journey. “Thank my dad - always takes me and gives me these opportunities - and all of my past and present coaches and the Monbulk Soccer Club.” “Thank the team too - I work well with my team - they help me develop and we work with each other to help us improve,” she said. If anyone would like to sponsor Clare Di Stefano and her Victorian representative journey, contact cdistefano@stjosephs.com.au for more information. The championships run in Sydney from 28 September to 2 October.

Boulevard for dreams YARRA Ranges Athletics athletes joined the rest of the Victorian athletics community at Kevin Bartlett Reserve, Burnley, for the annual half marathon along Yarra Boulevard. A cool but sunny morning provided ideal conditions for athletes to chase PBs. None were disappointed with some achieving outstanding results. Ross Kinsella showed he is coming into some good form in the lead up to the Melbourne Marathon with an excellent run to finish 38th in 1 hour 15.40 minutes. Full results were: Open Men: Ross Kinsella 38th 1.15.40; Michael Clarke 112th 1.21.14; Bryan Ackerly 145th 1.24.18; Jed Thrall 271st 1.36.49; Jamie Strudley 273rd 1.36.50; Craig Hewitson 297th 1.40.09; Dave Laven 332nd 1.49.43. Third time lucky? SENIORS - DIVISION 1 Woori Yallock 14.14 (98) d Wandin 10.12 (72) Second semi final WOORI Yallock has booked itself a spot in the grand final for the third successive year after a fantastic victory over a Wandin team that was in red hot form coming into this game. This match started in great fashion with both sides going in hard. The scoring went goal for goal and it was Woori that held a narrow fivepoint lead at the first change. The second quarter was still a tough rugged battle but Woori looked steadier with ball in hand and stretched its lead to 16 points by half-time. The third was more of the same. Wandin had plenty of the ball but Woori was always able to edge that little further in front as the quarter went on and by the last change its lead was an even four goals. The last quarter was an even contest and Wandin certainly gave it their all to get back into the game but Woori’s finals experience shone through as it held on to win by 26 points. It will now have the week off and prepare for the victor of the Wandin/ Mount Evelyn preliminary final to take on in the grand final the following weekend. Best Woori Yallock: M. Bonuda, D. Ryan, J. Adams. FIRST SEMI FINAL Mount Evelyn 14.9 (93) d Upwey Tecoma 11.19 (85) THIS was a fantastic contest and one that Upwey will be kicking itself about as it just couldn’t convert late in the game that ultimately cost it. Having said that, Mount Evelyn was very good and certainly deserved its victory. This game was a goal-forgoal battle for most of the day but Mount Evelyn did look to have the edge in the first three-quarters as it did lead for the majority of the clash. Its biggest lead was 10 points at half-time and that margin was narrowed just marginally to seven points by the last change. The last quarter saw Upwey pepper the goals and it was finishing strong but booted 12 straight behinds for the quarter while Mount Evelyn only had the three scoring shots but made them count, booting 2.1. Come final siren, Mount Evelyn was probably lucky to advance but it’s still alive and just one win away from playing in the grand final against the Tigers. It will take on Wandin next week in the preliminary final for that right while Upwey will have to work on its kicking over the summer because its

Competition for the ball was tight between Olinda and Healesville. 126949 Pictures: GREG CARRICK finals campaign has come to an end. RESERVES - DIVISION 1 SECOND SEMI FINAL Upwey Tecoma 11.9 (75) d Belgrave 8.9 (57) This was great battle early as both teams went blow for blow and neither side could grab a distinct advantage, Upwey led by just one point at quarter and half-time. The third quarter was where Upwey was able to open up the game a bit with some great gut running which broke through Belgrave’s defence and it was rewarded with a five goal to two quarter and the lead out to 20 points going into the last quarter. The last stanza was a hard battle with both teams struggling to hit the scoreboard which played into Upwey’s hands as it triumphed by 20 points come final siren and now march into the grand final in two weeks’ time. Belgrave will have one more chance in the preliminary final next week against Emerald. E FIRST SEMI FINAL merald 9.10 (64) d Warburton Millgrove 7.10 (52)

THIS was a low scoring game throughout but one that was in the balance right into the last quarter. The first half was a very tough struggle with both teams not able to generate any substantial attacks. It was Warby that went to the half-time break with a narrow two-point lead. The game didn’t really open up too much in the third but Emerald did take its opportunities, booting three goals to one to grab an 11 point three-quarter time lead. The last quarter was another tight affair but it was Emerald making the most of its chances booting three goals straight while Warby had its chances but was wasteful, scoring 2.5 which ultimately saw Emerald triumph and move into the preliminary final next week to take on Belgrave with the winner booking a place in the grand final against the awaiting Upwey. UNDER 18s DIVISION 1 - SECOND SEMI FINAL Healesville 10.16 (76) d Olinda Ferny Creek 11.7 (73) HEALESVILLE hasn’t lost a game

all year but it came mighty close to losing this one, however it did what great teams do and that’s find a way to win. Both sides had the same scoring shots in the first quarter but Olinda was accurate with 4.1 while Healesville booted five straight behinds. The second quarter saw Healesville claw its way back but it still didn’t have its kicking boots on as it scored 2.5 to 1.1 and Olinda’s lead was just four points at the half. Olinda got some good run going in the third and it put on five goals to three to grab a 16-point lead at the last change. This was Healesville’s biggest challenge all year and it stood tall in the last. Its back line was outstanding, holding Olinda to just one goal as it produced four majors to hit the lead late in the game and was able to hold on to win and march into the grand final. Olinda will get another shot next week when it plays Upwey Tecoma in the preliminary final. DIVISION 1 - FIRST SEMI FINAL Upwey Tecoma 11.8 (74) d Emerald 7.4 (46) UPWEY started this game in brilliant fashion. It was nothing short of superb in the first half as it raced to a 53-point lead while holding a stunned Emerald to just one goal. Emerald certainly didn’t look as though it was going to be a threat from half-time on but to its credit it came out in a different frame of mind in the second half and made a contest of the game. It outscored Upwey six goals to two for the remainder of the game but it was all about Upwey’s start that was the catalyst for its win which propels it into the preliminary final against Olinda Ferny Creek next weekend. DIVISION 2 - PRELIMINARY FINAL Wandin 13.7 (85) d Yea 5.7 (37) WANDIN will take on Woori Yallock in the grand final next week after a solid four quarter performance over Yea in the preliminary final beating it by 48 points. Wandin was way too slick for Yea in the first half and although Yea did try to defend hard it wasn’t enough to stop Wandin booting eight goals to one to race to a 41-point half-time lead. The second half was a lot more even as Yea did boot some late majors to add a bit of respectability to the scoreboard but this game was always in Wandin’s control and it will go into next week’s grand final feeling pretty good about its form.

YVMDFNL netball results DIVISION 1 - A GRADE SECOND SEMI FINAL WANDIN 39 D UPWEY TECOMA 37 WANDIN has inflicted Upwey’s first loss of the season with a two-goal win in a fantastic second semi final clash which books it a place in the grand final. This clash had everything with the winner in doubt deep into the last quarter. Wandin trailed by just one goal at the first change but it went into half-time with a three-goal lead after a hard fought 10 goals to six second quarter. The second half was classy stuff by two very good sides that turned it on for the spectators. It was goal for goal and Upwey looked to be finishing strong but Wandin was able to hold on to record a two-goal win and will now rest up for the grand final while Upwey will take on Belgrave next week in the preliminary final for one more chance to advance to the big dance the following week. Best Wandin: Melissa Martinov (24), Ella Priestley, Tayissa Coppinger. Upwey: Krista Tomlinson, Gretta Hankinson, Jordan Lingard (18). FIRST SEMI FINAL BELGRAVE 60 D MOUNT EVELYN 30 Belgrave played a very unforgiving brand of netball against a depleted Mount Evelyn team. It skipped out to an eight-goal lead at the first change and continued with its good form in the second quarter stretching the lead out to a comprehensive 17 goals by half-time. Belgrave ripped the game right away from Mount Evelyn in the third shooting 16 goal to seven and it had this game in its keeping by the last change with a 26-goal lead. The last quarter was really just played out as the result was never in doubt with Belgrave eventually running out comfortable 30 goal winners. It will now progress through to the preliminary final and take on Upwey in what should be a scintillating clash with the winner to play Wandin in the grand final. Best Belgrave: Tara Jois, Carmen Timms (32), Bianca Pilkington. Mount Evelyn: Maddie Hickey (23), Jessica Walker, Teagan Ashmore. DIVISION 1 - A RESERVE SECOND SEMI FINAL WANDIN 48 D MOUNT EVELYN 36 Wandin shot out of the blocks and jumped to a six goal lead at quarter time scoring 14 goals to eight to open proceedings and that opening was the reason for its victory. The next two quarters were quite tight but Mount Evelyn just couldn’t make any real in-roads into Wandin’s lead and by three-quarter time Wandin’s lead was eight goals. Wandin finished the day with more run scoring 13 goals to nine in the last quarter to record an impressive 12 goal win and move into the grand final awaiting the winner of the Mount Evelyn, Healesville preliminary final. Best Wandin: Xanthie Roper, Lauren Fletcher (23), Corinne Bogle. Mount Evelyn: Susan Livesey, Victoria Starling, Elissa Dykstra (21). FIRST SEMI FINAL HEALESVILLE 41 D EMERALD 37 Healesville has advanced to the preliminary final after storming home against Emerald in a game where it trailed for the majority of the match. Emerald had the slight edge in the first three quarters but Healesville was always in touch and threatening. Emerald held a three-goal lead at three quarter time and a grand stand finish was on the cards. Healesville’s work-rate in the last quarter was brilliant and it made Emerald look slow. Healesville finished the game with a 13 goal to six last quarter to win in great style and will take plenty of confidence going into next week’s final against Mount Evelyn with the winner to advance to the grand final to take on Wandin. Best Healesville: Lisa Baker (29), Georgia Murty, Bianca Grimshaw. Emerald: Kylie Del Marco (20), Meagan Baguley (17).
