When white is just oh so right keep walls clean using another colour?
bydesign WITH DI HENSHALL I OFTEN quip that my clients can have any colour they like as long as it’s white. I was once asked to consult on a new colour scheme for a major building in Hastings Street, Noosa Heads (wonder which one?) and asked myself how much could I charge for saying “paint it white”? When I am (invariably) asked to come up with “something timeless” the immediate knee-jerk reaction is to gravitate towards white being the basis of the solution. This is no more apparent than when designing kitchens and bathrooms. You can carbon-date a bathroom that has an avocado bath or a royal blue toilet - it is harder when presented with white. White kitchens can look brilliant 10 years down the line, longer if the hinges hold out. White bed linen never goes out of style - it is cool, clean, simple and luxurious. Multi-coloured, floral bedsheets (or worse coloured satin!) can never replace the beauty of white. People often say to me, what about keeping white walls clean, isn’t it easier to
Well, no - unless you are going to paint the walls the same colour as dirty finger marks, you are possibly going to have to whip out a damp sponge occasionally. White is the perfect backdrop for almost any colour - including mixing it with neutrals and pastels - and, of course, contrasts, the ultimate being black. Don’t think that choosing white is a cop-out, it isn’t. It has never been boring and is ultimately the only timeless “colour” we have. Choosing the right white is when the trouble can begin - there are grey whites, blue whites, brown whites, yellow whites - you get the picture. I would heartily recommend getting professional help to choose the right white. Professional painters use many varieties of white and know what one white looks like versus another. Selecting a white from a paint chip or even a brush-out is challenging. My personal favourite, which many of my clients will know, is Resene Alabaster, which seems to adopt the tones around it to perfectly blend with many different colours. Be mindful that white changes with the time of day and the seasons of the year. If you are going to inject some white into your life, spring is the perfect season - it’ll make you want to rush out and smell the roses.
