Ms Curtis said inadequate signage alerting motorists to the condition of the dirt road was also dangerous for caravaners or visitors, who often use the road as a short cut. “We have recently had two road trains travel this road, due to a bad accident on the passing lanes before Rangers Road, their GPS sent them

YOU could be forgiven for thinking this photo depicts a driveway, but it’s a road used by many and one that enters smack bang onto the New England Highway. There’s just one thing missing from the T intersection on Ford Road at Rosenthal Heights: crucial signage to alert drivers to slow down. Ford Road resident Tracy Curtis says the junction is a death trap waiting to happen and has spent the last nine months pleading with Main Roads and Southern Downs Regional Council to take action. The mother-of-three said in the absence of a ‘give way’ sign or long black-and-white horizontal sign indicating the end of the road, it was “just good luck” no driver had continued unaware onto the highway and been t-boned by a truck. She described Main Roads’ response as “narrow minded” and “pathetic”. “Main Roads told us that ‘as only locals use this road and they should know where the road ends, signage was not necessary’,” she said. “Our children and friends come up from Brisbane and their lives are at risk every time they use this intersection. “If it is on the road map, it should be safe.” To make matters worse, both state and local government depart-

TRAGIC accidents involving young drivers is often on the news. To help stem the carnage, Tenterfield Rotary Club, New England Mutual and Tamworth Regional Council banded together to transport 28 Year 11 students from Tenterfield to participate in a driver awareness course on 28 August. The course conveyed a very powerful message: from a graphic re-creation of a fatal road accident in the opening session, to the consequent court case at the closing session of the day, where the young driver was given a three-year custodial sentence. Other sessions covered many aspects of road safety, the effects of alcohol, and a demonstration how vehicles perform under different road conditions. Tenterfield Rotary Club public relations manager Keith Butler said a presentation by a victim of a motorcycle accident really drove home the life-

Great find FOLLOWING a tip-off, officers recovered a great dane along with her two pups after attending a property at Wylie Creek last Friday. The dog had been reported stolen from the Emerald region in Queensland earlier this year. A scan of the dog’s micro-chip confirmed it was the stolen dog. The dog and it two pups were seized and will be returned to it’s owner on the Gold Coast.
Pinched from car POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a lady’s handbag was stolen from a vehicle at Logan Street on Friday night. The handbag was recovered nearby the following morning by the victim. Police believe the incident happened between 10pm and 11pm that night.

A 22-YEAR-OLD Tenterfield man has been charged with high range drink driving after being detected driving while allegedly over the legal limit early on Saturday morning. Police stopped the man’s vehicle at Douglas Street around 1.30am after allegedly witnessing it swerving over the road. The male will appear in court later this month.

TWO public information sessions on water fluoridation have been set down for early next month, but they have already been shrouded in controversy. Queensland Health and Queenslanders for Safe Drinking Water will each have half an hour to state their respective case and 30 minutes to answer question at Stanthorpe Civic Centre on 8 October and Warwick Town Hall on 9 October, ahead of the council’s fluorida-
tion survey. But Queenslanders for Safe Drinking Water president Merilyn Haines said while she was happy Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) had followed through with its resolution to provide the venues free of charge, she was “intrigued” by the early, 5.30pm start. To make matters worse, Ms Haines said her request to alternate the pre-determined order of address for “fairness and equity”, was rejected by council CEO Andrew Roach without explanation.
She contends Queensland Health, which will champion the health benefits of water fluoridation, has “a natural advantage” as second speaker at both sessions and a real one, with people arriving late from work potentially missing out on pertinent points of the anti-fluoride argument. The council has agreed to discontinue fluoridation if more than 50 per cent of survey respondents want the practice stopped. The survey is expected to be sent
to every Warwick and Stanthorpe Water Treatment Plan water connection ratepayer in mid-October along with the next issue of water rates. The decision to allow the information sessions to occur was only narrowly agreed to, five votes to four, after mayor Peter Blundell and councillors Denise Ingram, Jo McNally and Neil Meiklejohn voted against the motion at the council’s general meeting in July. The sessions are expected to conclude at 7pm.

A WARWICK resident got the shock of their life on Tuesday afternoon when they discovered a small WWII grenade while cleaning out a shed. Police were called to the Cullen Street home about 3.30pm and proceeded to close part of the street as a precaution. With the help of the army bomb disposal team, who provided assistance externally, police took the device apart and found the interior initiation missing. They were then given the all clear to transport the explosive back to the station where it remained overnight. The bomb squad was expected to collect the device yesterday. Police say the grenade was most likely from a relative who served in WWII.

Rodeo parade IN JUST six weeks there will be a scramble for cowboy hats and boots as Warwick celebrates the Rose and Rodeo Festival. Entries are now open for the much-loved Warwick Credit Union Street Parade, which will travel Palmerin Street on Saturday 25 October. Warwick Tourism and Events CEO Tracy Vellacott said that after last year’s “Big Hats Brave Hearts” theme, which had participants channeling William Wallace and the movie Brave Heart, the team had to come up with an idea that had multiple opportunities for schools, community groups and businesses to theme their entries. “Everyone knows the old joke about what’s black and white and read all over and we

thought we’d borrow it in order to pay homage to (The Warwick Daily News) that has been bringing citizens of our region, the news and views for 150 years,” Ms Vellacott said. “This is quite a milestone for our wider community and the theme will give participants scope to create floats and displays around the colours, newspapers, magazines, reading, of course rodeo or indeed anything
that fires up their imagination.” Over 40 participants generally make up this parade with a multitude of colours, characters, rhythms, floats and plenty of handsome horses on show. Ms Vellacott urged the community to come along and cheer on parade participants. The parade starts at noon on Saturday, with good vantage points all along the Palmerin Street route.

ROAD conditions are not being blamed for a single vehicle accident that claimed the lives of two Thulimbah residents at The Summit on Friday night. Mark Ciufici, 57, and Jeffrey Croft, 44, were killed when their northbound vehicle left the New England highway and rolled, colliding with a steel overhead light pole on the median strip about 8.20pm. Police say the pair were travelling about 100 metres south of the intersection with Granite Belt Drive when tragedy struck. Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.

WHILE the Coalition Government has been quick to point out the speed in which it’s been rolling out the NBN of late, new figures show just two per cent of small and medium businesses (SMEs) are connected. The 2014 Sensis e-Business report revealed that while the majority of Australian online SMEs have access to broadband internet (93 per cent), only two per cent have their connection through the NBN. “The data shows that so far, the NBN has only reached one in 50 small businesses, suggesting that to date, the high-speed revolution has had minimal impact on Australian SMEs,” general manager of Yellow Pages sales James Ciuffetelli said.

All eyes on two dam projects By ALENA HIGGINS SPECULATION is mounting on the future of Emu Swamp Dam, after it appeared on the Federal Government’s dambuilding shortlist. In a recent article in The Australian newspaper, the longmooted Emu Swamp Dam south of Stanthorpe and Mole River Dam near Tenterfield were among 30 sites across Australia identified for potential new or expanded dams in a plan to boost the mining and agricultural industries and stimulate rural economies. In March, Prime Minister Tony Abbott appointed Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce to head up a ministerial taskforce to investigate the viability of the sites.
Since then, the initial list of 100 has been stripped back to 30, before being handed to Mr Abbott. However Mr Joyce cautioned that not all dams that made the latest cut would go ahead. When the Free Times requested an interview with Mr Joyce earlier this week to discuss the prospects of the local dams, his office said he would not be drawn on individual projects until further examination had been undertaken. However a spokesman for the minister did confirm the “Emu Swamp and Mole River dam projects have been submitted by the Ministerial Taskforce on Water Infrastructure for consideration”.
According to The Australian article, federal cabinet is set to consider the dam report “within weeks” but the ultimate decision rests with the Prime Minister. Emu Swamp Dam has been on Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) and the former Stanthorpe Shire Council’s radar for more than two decades, with hundreds of thousands of taxpayers’ dollars being thrown into dam studies over that time. The water storage project is thought to be crucial to the Granite Belt as both an urban water and horticultural supply. Just last month, SDRC tightened Stanthorpe’s water restrictions from medium to high, when Storm King Dam dropped below 60 per cent.

SOUTHERN Downs residents will have access to 11 return flights to Sydney a week when the Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport (BWWA) opens later this year, after Wagners secured a deal with the Flying Kangaroo. Announced last Wednesday, the landmark agreement will provide a Toowoomba-centric schedule of double daily services Monday to Friday and daily services on the weekend from 17 November. The highly-anticipated news has been warmly received by Southern Downs locals who are keen to access the nearby airport rather than contending with Brisbane tolls and hefty parking fees. It is not yet known how much QantasLink, who are in the midst of offering discount celebratory fares, will charge, but Wagners general manager Phil Gregory told the Free Times in June passengers should expect to pay about a 25 per cent premium on Brisbane fares. Wagners chairman John Wagner described the deal as a “a momentous occasion for Australian aviation, our Toowoomba region and the airport”. “I speak on behalf of Wagners’ four shareholders, Joe, Denis, Neill and myself when I say that we always knew a major airline would see the potential of serving South West Queensland,” he said in a statement. Tax Tip - Claiming Your Telephone Expenses Home office telephone rental expenses may be partly deductible for taxpayers who are either ‘on call’ or required to contact their employer or clients on a regular basis. Paragraph 174 of Taxation Ruling TR 98/14Income tax: employee/ journalists - allowances, reimbursements and work-related deductions states that the deductible portion of telephone rental expenses can be calculated using the formula: Business calls (incoming and outgoing) / Total calls (incoming and outgoing)
A deduction is allowable for the cost of telephone calls made in the course of work or business. Work or business calls may be identified from an itemised telephone account. If such an account is not provided, records covering a representative four week period will be accepted as establishing a pattern of use for the entire year in order to make a reasonable estimate of the portion of call expenses for work or business.

Water Fluoridation There is NOT a single human or animal study showing it necessary to INGEST uoride to have good health OR good teeth. At least 50 % of ingested uoride accumulates in the bones—MORE in children or people with Kidney disease (many Diabeics & Aboriginals). Many European countries have expressed concerns about safety and acknowledge that Water Fluoridaion is unethical Mass Medicaion.
MOST COUNTRIES DO NOT FLUORIDATE World Health Organisaion data shows children from unuoridated countries have equal dental health to uoridated countries. Botle fed babies can ingest 100 to 200 imes as much uoride as breast fed ; there are now 39 published human studies linking uoride exposure to lowering of IQ ( see www.uoridealert.org ). In the past year 19 QLD Councils have rejected Water Fluoridaion.

Casting vote questioned I AM writing to question the manner in which the mayor exercised his casting vote to approve the Stanthorpe Woolworth’s service station development application. I confess I do not know the protocol for how a mayoral casting vote is used in Queensland, nor whether it is covered in the Local Government Act. I do know that in parliament and in parliamentary committees the speaker or the chairman has no ordinary vote but in the case of an equal vote they have a casting vote - to break the deadlock. Outside parliamentary and government circles the chairman usually has an ordinary vote and if the ordinary vote is deadlocked, then has a casting vote to break the tie. It is important that the casting vote is properly used and not influenced by extraneous issues. It is quite usual for the chair to cast their vote to maintain the status quo (no change) thus allowing time for more information which may help settle the issue. Generally chairmen do not cast their vote for the ‘change’ unless there are very pressing reasons for it. In cases where voting members present are just sufficient to make a quorum and the matter for decision is important, the chair will either cast their vote for the status quo or decline to give their casting vote, thus letting the question remain undecided until a later date when all the committee (full council in this case) is present to vote. In the case in question on the day of the vote council had just such a situation. We think the mayor needs to explain to councillors and public why he deviated from protocol. What was so important for him to use his casting vote to approve this application at that time, rather than hold it over for the two other councillors to vote or for more information to be available. Perhaps councillors should exercise their right and ask for another vote. Bob Johnson, Chairman SOS Inc (the Voice of Ratepayers and Residents), Stanthorpe.
Mentally ill The writer (Free Times, 4 September, Letters) quotes the Minister for Health as saying one in five Australians have a mental illness, with that writer’s observation that must mean 16 state politicians and two local councillors are so afflicted.
The title Minister for Health is doublespeak for the minister of disease, sickness and death as they pump rat poison, mercury and aluminium into our water and blood systems. Any of which causes mental retardation. As for only one in five politicians so afflicted, it works like cancer clusters, the mentally ill cluster together. Only by merging the number of politicians with the rest of society do they hide the extent of the disease in their midst. But politicians are adept at hiding things, like how much big pharma subsidises them. We never get a printout of where the money comes from or goes to. So sick are they that they enforce their disease onto the sane members of society who want health. Charles Gaitskell, Stanthorpe.
Who didn’t do it IN REPLY to the letter by M. Love of Stanthorpe “Whodunnit” (Free Times, 4 September). No-one said the forced amalgamated councils were the brainchild of the LNP but the LNP platform prior to the election was, “they would roll back the forced amalgamated councils of the Beattie/Bligh team if they won government”, this has only happened in four council areas and the remainder have been denied. It is very obvious the LNP does not want to de-amalgamate these councils because they are the milking cows for the LNP State Government just look at your council rates and compare them to your neighbouring council's rates. If the LNP doesn’t de-amalgamate the remainder of these councils then it is just as much to blame as the previous Beattie/Bligh team as you have stated as fact. Nothing is too hard if LNP want to do it. L. Dagg, Killarney.
What’s it cost? THE mayor expounded on the wonderful “app” the council had purchased (Free Times, 28 August). He needs to give an answer to the question he was asked: how much did the new council app cost? And the next question he needs to answer is just how the “app” is going to pay for itself? And another question I have is how successful another waste of money “bang the table” has been? Why should the ratepayers be made to pay for such a waste of their money? This year our rates went up 24 per cent on last year. Why? Now I know. S. Johnson, Stanthorpe.
Thumbs Up Thumbs Down Use your brains Thumbs Down TO the SDRC and/or Ergon for their apparent indifference to streetlights which are constantly on, such as those at Wood and Albion Streets which have been burning brightly at public expense for almost four months.

New route for rail proposed AN IDEA by Warwick Chamber of Commerce and Industry to steer the proposed Melbourne-Brisbane inland rail route closer to home has been heard by Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss. Maranoa MP Bruce Scott met with Mr Truss, who is also Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, on 2 September to discuss the ambitious project, which is currently projected to travel via Yelarbon, Inglewood and Millmerran. “I met with the Warwick Chamber of Commerce last month and we discussed possible routes by taking advantage of existing infrastructure in the Southern Downs and I was able to highlight these to the Deputy Prime Minister,” Mr Scott said. “This project will bring huge benefits to our industries as it will increase capacity, reliability and reduce the time it takes to move freight from the Port of Brisbane, through NSW, to Melbourne.” Warwick Chamber of Commerce and Industry vice president Jason Gard said the organisation was “very excited” to hear Mr Scott had taken up the idea with Mr Truss. “The reason we are advocating for this is twofold,” he said. “One is to allow access to grain freight and grain handling facilities planned for Allora and any other freight needs of this region, but the other point we believe is that... we can’t see State Government maintaining the track if it is bypassed by a new line and we are fearful
Warwick will lose the track we have in the future.” Mr Gard said extending the route just 20 kilometers to the Warwick line and then utlising
the already existing corridor would “speed up the process” as there would be “no approvals needed to purchase land”. Currently the proposed route
to inland rail specifications but there is evidence you can put dual gauges on one line and another track on the inside of them.” The Coalition has said it is
committed to delivering the inland rail over the next 10 years and has earmarked $300 million from the 2014-15 budget, with extensions over the next four years.
Gas pipe lobby on track By ALENA HIGGINS AS WELL as the discussing its inland rail plans with Maranoa MP Bruce Scott, Warwick Chamber of Commerce raised the need for natural gas to be piped through the area. “Any major developments of bigger com-
panies... would be limited by unavailability of natural gas and we suggested that that needed to be investigated,” a chamber spokesman said. He said making inquiries to private gas suppliers has already been raised at a regional council level and “Mr Scott was also onto that”.

By TANIA PHILLIPS WARWICK and surrounding areas are probably looking at slightly below average rainfall for spring according to a Bureau of Meteorology spokesman. The region has a median rain fall of 163mm for the spring period from September to November. “Working from our model, there is a 100 per cent probability that there will 50mm of rain this spring,” he said. “It drops to 86 per cent for 110 mm and 55 for 150mm. “If you break that down for September, there is an average rain fall of 33mm and there is a 79 per cent chance of 10mm and 56 per cent for 25mm. “October has a 63mm median with again a 79 per cent percent chance of 10mm and 56 per cent chance of 25mm.” In the short term - during the next week - farmers can expect very little rain, however as September is usually the driest month of the year this is nothing unusual. The BOM spokesman said Warwick can expect continuing

No beef with these results By ALENA HIGGINS
Killarney’s Pat McMahon with the prized stud bull.
A solid investment By ALENA HIGGINS KILLARNEY cattleman Pat McMahon picked up an equal top price Santa bull at the Toowoomba Ag Show bull sale last Thursday. Weighing in at 920kg, the 23-monthold Glen Leigh Hawk bred by Ian and Felicity Shaw of Deepwater was fiercely contested and came in at $8000. Forty-four sires were offered on the day with 36 sold at an average of $4257. Mr McMahon said the young stud “stood out to him” early on. “His figures looked good, his fat
scans were even and his daily weight gain was very good,” Mr McMahon said. “I came into it late in the bidding I just sat there and wanted to see how things went. He was at the top of our price range but I think quality is worth it.” The bull will go with a herd of 200 cows at Mr McMahon’s property, halfway between Killarney and Warwick. While it has been a difficult season, Mr McMahon believed recent rain had boosted buyer confidence. “I think we have seen some fat cattle market improve over the last two to three
weeks substantially and I think that, along with the rain we have had, has given people some more confidence and changed their outlook,” he said. “I certainly think it has changed things a lot.” Andrew Meara of Elders Stud Stock Queensland said he was “satisfied” with the day, which recorded an 82 per cent clearance. “It was a pretty solid day considering the season and climate,” Mr Meara said. “Clearance was acceptable with very good solid average without anything over the top.”
WINNERS of the 52nd Prime Cattle Hoof and Hook Competition will be announced this Saturday at Warwick. More than 90 entrants from across the Toowoomba, Dalby and Warwick districts will vie for bragging rights and $11,000 in total prize-money when the event kicks off with hoof judging today at the Warwick Saleyards from 8am. Then on Saturday, the public is invited to attend the hook viewing at John Dee from 10am with the winners of all five classes announced at the beef luncheon at the Warwick Club from noon. The competition has been run consecutively for more than half a century by the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society along with the help of sponsors. But this year’s event will be extra special for Freestone farmer Bill Gross and chairman of the Prime Cattle committee, who will celebrate 50 years of involvement in the grass roots competition. He said it had changed “remarkably” since he first became a member of the Show Society in his early twenties. “When they started they used to exhibit dairy cross cattle and now they have some of the best cattle in Australia,” Mr Gross said. “They went away and brought bulls and top cows and we educated them a lot when they came to the viewing. “Professor Yates from Ar-
Bill Gross will this year celebrate 50 years of involvement with the prestigious Warwick Hoof and Hook competition, which begins at the Warwick Saleyards today. Photo: BUBBLES BARBIERATO midale University explained to us where we were going wrong when he judged for five or six years in the early days.” Mr Gross said it gave him tremendous satisfaction to have witnessed the transformation and he still got a kick out of organising and competing today. “I’ve seen it grow from pretty ordinary cattle to what we are today, which is a respected and probably one of the best competitions in the land,” he said. “I’ve won a few awards of course and my family has. I still put a lot into it.” The hoof classes will be judged by Russell Hanley and hook classes by Warren Stiff of John Dee.

Tail-tag red tape cut SOUTHERN Downs and Tenterfield cattle producers no longer have to tail-tag cattle destined for processing on the EU meat market after the Federal Government scrapped the requirement. Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce said the tags were an additional layer of unnecessary red tape and
would save cattle producers about $1 million per year. “From 1 September, Australian producers are no longer required to use special lime-green tags on the tails of cattle produced for processing into beef exported to the EU,” he said.
“The tags were a requirement for identifying cattle eligible for processing for the EU market, but Australia’s strong cattle identification and traceability systems, such as the National Livestock Identification System, means these tags are actually unnecessary.
“The Australian Government is doing all it can to support cattle producers to be competitive internationally and generate better returns at the farmgate.” The Australian beef meat and offal exports to the EU were worth $201.9 million in 2013.
Frost cloth does the trick for growers IN OUR neck of the woods, frost protection is often required to give sensitive plants the best chance of survival. Frost cloth is a commercially available product - a light, breathable drape-over fabric made from spun-bonded polypropylene opening up the benefits of costeffective, non-permanent frost covers to the large-scale commercial grower. The benefits of Frost cloth are two-fold. First, it traps in the warmth of the soil and retains warmer air close around the plant, preventing rapid surface cooling conducive to frost formation. Secondly, the cover itself provides a physical barrier on which the moisture freezes, rather than the plant tissues themselves. Frost-cloth is light enough to be simply laid over the top of plants, but a low hoop structure, tunnel, or even just a few stakes to lift it slightly higher than the top leaves
Frost cloth at work.
FTA gains from meat exports AUSTRALIA’S cattle and sheep industries have urged Federal Parliament to take a bipartisan approach to immediately secure the Korea-Australia Free Trade Agreement (KAFTA). Industry taskforce spokesperson Stephen Kelly said it was now critical that binding treaty action be taken as soon as possible, before further losses in trading terms were suffered by the Australia beef industry. “The US secured a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Korea in 2012, so there will always be a tariff differential between Australian and US beef,” Mr Kelly said. “Currently, the tariff differential is 8 per cent, and we need KAFTA to enter into force this calendar year in order for the differential to return to 5.3 per cent and remain at that level for the next 13 years. The 8 per cent is already being felt in our chilled beef exports - with a two per cent loss in our chilled beef market share to US product.” The Australian Government announced in December 2013 that the FTA between South Korea had been successfully negotiated. Without KAFTA the Australian beef industry potentially faces a $1.4 billion loss in export sales into Korea over the next 15 years “as our major competitor in the market would have a clear tariff preference,” Mr Kelly said. In 2013-14, South Korea was Australia’s third most valuable export market with 155,656 tonnes swt of beef worth A$895m exported to South Korea.
Horse trials in spring
is also helpful. Frost-cloth will provide a warm, light-filled and sheltered micro-climate for sensitive plants
to flourish. Commercial growers and home gardeners alike can enjoy extended growing seasons and better quality produce through the effective use of this highly cost-
effective product. Article written by Charmaine Rogers; supplied by NetPro Pty Ltd.

Energy savings kick in By ALENA HIGGINS IT’S time to store energy and get off the grid. That’s the message from the owners of Freedom Energy, who were championing the benefits of energy independence to farmers at Toowoomba’s Ag Fest last week. Marketing manager Ed Crothall said some primary producers he had talked to were paying upwards of $4000 a quarter just to pump water around their property. “For the past four years, the solar industry has been all about what you can sell back to the grid and all about putting as many panels on your roof and having as bigger an inverter as possible,” Mr Crothall said.
“We are here saying it’s time for the other half of the solution. “There are two ways to do that, you can either get rid of the grid completely and have your own back-up inverter or treat the grid as your own back-up system. “It’s about energy independence and not relying on the likes of Ergon, Origin and so on who just keep putting up power prices.” With a 4.5 year return and 25-year solution, clean energy was well worth considering, technical solutions manager Andrew Nichols said. “We understand the rural community, and in the rural community they all know the inevitabilities of life - death and taxes - but in recent years you can add to that
drought and flood and rising energy prices,” Mr Nichols said. “In recent years, the solar expansion was based on really generous feed-in tariff subsidies and that was never really going to sustain itself in the long term. “Now it’s down to eight cents and we are seeing a proportionate number of people coming through to talk to us - we don’t have to come to them - who are looking at new solar but they think ‘why am I going to export all that sun-generated electricity at eight cents a unit when I am going to be paying 25 or 30 cents at night’? Why don’t I keep all that stuff I have generated through the day and keep it for myself’.”
Apply soon for small exporters’ rebate SMALL exporters still have time to apply for a 50 per cent export registration charges rebate this financial year. The rebate is worth up to a maximum of $5000 to eligible exporters and is available in 2014-15, Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce said. Export establishments with an annual revenue of less than $10 million, and less than $20 million total revenue for domestic and export activities, will be eligible
to apply for the registration rebate. “The application process itself is very straight forward and I would encourage exporters to look at the rebate eligibility criteria and to apply before applications close on 31 October,” Mr Joyce said. For more information about the rebate, or to apply, visit daff.gov.au/biosecurity/ export/package-assistingsmall-exporters.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20) Relationships are getting interesting. It will prove to be important to take care of details. If you’re sloppy, that will be a problem. If you are pedantic, that won’t be pretty either. The trick here will be to be grounded and natural. The Virgo Sun is bringing you to earth in an interesting way. TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20) Venus has just crossed the threshold into Virgo. This puts her in an earth sign, which suits you to a tee. Though Virgo isn’t quite so sensuous as Taurus, it is relaxed and natural. Don’t shoot yourself in the foot by expecting life to be what it’s not. Explore the subtleties of what is. GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) Mercury is in Libra, which is a generally pleasant place for him to be in your case. There is less frenzy and excitement than when he is in Gemini, but he is still affirming the wonders of inspired ideas. The inspired ideas that are around this week, are to do with harmony and aesthetics. CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22) The Moon is rising. Soon she will be as full as a boot. When she is this, she will also be as deep as the ocean. She is heading toward Pisces. Though Crabs live by the seaside, rather than in the midst of the Pacific trench, the mystery of the ocean is a constant lure. Deepen your love. LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22) This is an interesting time for Lions. Uranus is hitting the accelerator, goading you to break limits and be free, while Saturn is applying the brakes. These are not an easy pair to juggle – yet there is a way. Freedom has to take limits into account. Change your attitude, if not your situation. VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22) The Sun is right plumb in the middle of Virgo. He is shining directly over your patch. With all his light and warmth, there’s no way you can prevent yourself from breaking open and giving birth to fresh ideas, inspiration in spades, and new life. Allow yourself to germinate, sprout and grow. LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23) As Venus moves to join the Sun in Virgo, so your energy is brought to ground. Mercury is still with you in Libra – but he’s not going to be allowed to get away with any distracting tricks. Neither will your mind. Keep it real, keep it original, keep it authentic – and you will prosper.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21) Though Jupiter is in Leo, putting loads of dry wood on your fire, he’s doing so in such a way that it’s not entirely clear what he is up to. Essentially his job at the moment, is to get you out of being everybody’s slave, to being heartfully empowered, without letting you get over-confident.
2. Louisiana has a coastline on which
with Sudhir
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21) Mars has passed in front of Saturn, but the fun’s not over yet. Saturn still requires more understanding. He is the symbol of both limits and wisdom. Somehow you are going to have to figure out how those two things go together. There is no way on earth to speed Saturn up.
Trivia by Ric Allport
Can you find the hidden meaning in the picture puzzles below? 1.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19) Jupiter is opening you up to the positive possibilities in all that you’re going through. It’s time to write your script in such a way that it highlights all the amazing diamonds of experience you have been given. The reputation of the dour Goat has to go out the window. Open up and play. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18) The rising Moon passes through early in the week. This is bound to give you the sense that waves of feeling are rolling over you. Let them roll. Though there will be a great temptation to try to make sense of them, with your everdexterous thinking apparatus, it would be best not to. PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20) The full Moon is coming at the end of the week – and it’s in Pisces. Imagine the full Moon shining over the vast expanse of the widest ocean and you’ll have some idea of what feelings to expect. Tune into this one. It’s a gift from nature to you. Let it fill you with conscious hope.

Come soothe your mind By ALENA HIGGINS EVERYTHING to soothe and heal the mind, body and soul will be on display at a harmony expo at Warwick this weekend. Nutrition information, chiropractors, massage and reiki therapists as well as psychic readers are just some of the stallholders on offer at the Body and Soul Harmony Expo this Saturday. Entry is free and refreshments are available,
with money raised going to two local disability organisations - DAG Force and Warwick Blind Vision Impaired Citizens. Psychic medium and clairvoyant Monica Ward, who has helped organise the event said anyone with nutritional, emotional or spiritual concerns would benefit from attending. She said spiritual healing and past life regression were powerful mediums. “Say when you have depression, you can’t see the
future because you close down,” Ms Ward said. “The purpose is to lift that person’s spirits so they can see their own pathway again. “The other thing we do to assist people is to teach them to understand that people who have passed away have only stepped out of their physical body into their spiritual body and they haven’t gone very far.” The expo will run from 9am to 5pm at the CWA Hall on Grafton Street.
Evolution debunked THE age-old evolution versus creation debate will take centre stage at Tenterfield this Saturday night. Dr Don Batten, international speaker, author and biologist is visiting the shire and will answer probing questions on the cause of our existence and origins at a free public meeting. Presenting a “water-
tight” case for creation, Dr Batten will put forward his views over two lectures entitled ‘Creation - a key to the gospel’ and ‘Creatures do change - but it’s not evolution’. “Many people believe science has disproved the Bible and therefore ‘Christianity and Jesus’ are now irrelevant!” Dr Batten is quoted as saying.
And they're off!
“But what’s the real answer? Can the majority of scientists really be wrong when they claim evolution started everything and not God?” Tenterfield Presbyterian Church will host the evening, which includes supper, commencing at 6.30pm at Sir Henry Parkes Public School, Wood Street.
Shire ready for bushfire SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council’s (SDRC) works, maintenance and parks crews have undertaken bushfire awareness training.
Delivered by the Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) over the past month, the training allows SDRC to play a role in helping RFSQ to protect

the community in the event of a bushfire emergency. The increased communication between the SDRC and RFSQ means both can work together.
Club beaming at race result By ALENA HIGGINS THE next Father’s Day harness racing event at Allman Park will be beamed across Australia and offer $10,000 in prize-money, organisers have excitedly revealed. Darling Downs Harness Racing Club president Anthony Collins said the success of last Sunday’s event caught the eye of Racing Queensland manager David Aldred who gave Mr Collins a gentleman’s agreement that the next event would
be a country cup with TAB and Sky Channel coverage. “Racing was really good, the track couldn’t have been any better,” Mr Collins said. “Racing Queensland is on a really strong push to get harness racing back into the country and to conduct meetings on grass tracks as there is not a lot of infrastructure in Queensland.” More than 600 racegoers from near and far filed through the gates
and raised over $2500 for the “Jackie’s Bunch” Relay for Life team while enjoying a day out at the trots. Mr Collins said he was “stoked” with the day and tipped his hat to the Warwick Turf Club caretakers who prepared the grass surface for the event. Upset for Manly as finals settled By CASEY O’CONNOR
1153460-PB37-14
MINOR premiership favourites Manly faltered at the final hurdle to be pipped by the Roosters for the J.J. Gilton Shield. If the back end of the season is any indication, the next four weeks are sure to have fans on the edge of their seats. Bunnies’ fans will be looking for a repeat performance of their round-22 thrashing of Manly on Friday night when the two sides meet at Allianz Stadium to open the finals series. South Sydney lacked composure and polish at the end of their sets and failed to capitalise on opportunities against the Roosters. In good news for fans, John Sutton got through the game unscathed. Half-
back Adam Reynolds returns from a one-week suspension for the first finals game. Manly are struggling with injuries. Brett Stewart was a late withdrawal against the Cowboys but is expected to play. The Sea Eagles were definitely outplayed at 1300 Smiles. Uncharacteristic errors have crept into their game as they deal playing players out of position. If Inglis is back to his best, the Bunnies could skip into the preliminary finals. The Roosters firmed as favourites to win back-to-back premierships after round 26. Led by half back Mitchell Pearce, the Roosters looked to be at the top of their game against the Bunnies - however a late flurry of tries gave the Roosters'
Footy Tipping
faithful heart palpitations as they allowed Souths to get within four points. If they take the foot off the gas again this weekend, Penrith will make them pay. Despite their numbers in the casualty ward, the Panthers have worked hard for their place in the top four and the likes of Moylan and Soward who dominated against the Warriors have been impressive. The Roosters also have personnel concerns. Aidan Guerra is suspended. Dylan Napa has an appointment with the judiciary and Jake Friend isn’t expected to play. It would be no real surprise if the Panthers earn themselves a week off and a berth in the premlininary final. Queenslanders will be spoilt for choice on Saturday night when the Cow-
boys and Broncos go head to head at 1300 Smiles. The Cowboys have been impressive recently having found their feet under their new coach. While JT’s form has been sensational it is the form of those around him that has caught the eye. The Broncos faithful spent the weekend on tenterhooks after their loss to Melbourne. They scraped in as first Canberra then Penrith did them enormous favours. Their form has been up and down and they too have injury concerns. The return of Thaiday will be a welcome addition. If the footy gods work with the Cowboys this year, there could finally be smiles all round for the North Queenslanders. Melbourne Storm danced their way

A late try put the game out of the reach of the Tigers. found a chink in the armour and dived over to put the Minor Premiers on the board. Tiger’s captain coach Brendan Minns added the extras to put his side within a converted try of the Cutters. In a thrilling passage of play, the Tigers again threatened the line. Close to half time they got a penalty in front of the uprights and as the clock ticked down Minns elected to go for the two points. At the half time break, the game was in the balance with Killarney holding a 12-8 lead. The game swung end to end with some great defence from both sides. Tigers fullback Jesse Murphy beat off four defenders to score a lengthof- the-field try and even the scores. The Tigers took a two-point lead when Minns added the extras. Cutters captain John Trindall who had been punishing in defence put his side back in front with a try in the 52nd minute. The conversion by Dion Galloway gave the Cutters a four-point buffer. Tenterfield second rower Lucas Dearden felt the wrath of the referee and found himself binned for 10 minutes. Killarney amped up their attack. Five successive sets close to the line eventually yielded a try for Cutters forward Peter Giffin who had done a mountain of work in defence. With only four minutes left on the clock, Lucas Dearden’s day got even worse when he was downed by friendly fire in a tackle. There was plenty for concern for Dearden as he was stretchered from the field. Josh Klein put the game out the reach of the Tigers with a try in just a minute from full time. Galloway converted and the celebrations for the
This Saturday and Sunday, the Warwick Dragway presents the annual Six Bangers Nats.
“Pass the Ball competition” proved popular with budding footballers at half time on BRL grand final day. Jordan Stonehouse, Elijah Costello, Harrison Schwenke and Jack Thompson enjoy the spoils of their win.”
There is concern written all over the faces of the League safe officers, trainers and first aid officers as Tenterfield player Lucas Dearden is stretchered from the field. Just four minutes from full time, Dearden suffered a broken jaw after an accidental clash with a team mate. Cutters began in earnest. Trindall praised his team mate Mick Bloomfield after the game claiming he was his secret weapon. Bloomfield suffered a nasty injury several weeks ago and after serious surgery was not expected to play again this year. Killarney were brutal in defence and while there were plenty of big hits it was a fast clean game. Brendan Minns was named Coach of the Year, and the Tigers were left to rue what might have been. It has been a great season for the young Tigers side and if they can keep their side together, they are going to be a force in the BRL in coming seasons.
Coedie Tandy was named Player of the Final. The BRL Player of the Year was James Loneragan who also picked up the Trophy for Rep Player of the Year. Tigers 18-year-old fullback Jesse Murphy capped off an outstanding season by being named BRL Colt of the Year. Cutters stalwart Bob Bell was presented with the Clubman of the Year. Lucas Dearden was taken to hospital and subsequently transferred to Brisbane’s PA hospital where he underwent surgery on a badly broken jaw. Dearden has been released from hospital following the surgery and is home in Tenterfield. The BRL family wish him a speedy recovery. WATTLES END THE DROUGHT A WIN in the TRL premiership ended a 17year drought for Wattles and capped off a stellar season for the Warriors who have lost only two matches since the start of the season. The final score was 35-12, but at half time the game against the defending premiers Gatton Hawks was in the balance with Wattles holding a slim 10-6 advantage. The minor premiers stepped things up a gear in the second half, piling on 22 points. Wattles defence shut the Hawks out of the game in a half where they limited their errors. The Hawks scored in the latter stages of the second half giving their fans something to cheer, but the game had slipped from their grasp and there was to be no miracle comeback this week.

GRAND final weekend might be done and dusted for another year but wow what a weekend of football. In the BRL grand final the Cutters upset the Tigers party in Tenterfield to claim backto-back premierships. Stanthorpe United’s A grade footballers slotted a goal in the dying moments of the grand final against Ballandean to experience that unique “8 is Great” feeling. On Sunday the action moved to Toowoomba for the TRL Grand Final between Wattles and Gatton with plenty of local interest in the result. Wattles proved too strong in the latter stages and clocked up their first premiership in 17 years. The Warwick Reddies booked themselves a place in the AFL Grand Final in two weeks when they shut the gate on the USQ Cougars to add to the successes. The BRL Grand Final in Tenterfield drew perhaps the biggest crowd seen at a local footy final since the heady days of sport in the 60’s. The crowd at Rugby League Park in Tenterfield was enormous. Busloads of fans travelled from Texas to support their Foxy Terriers in the ladies League Tag Final won by the Tigerettes and I doubt there could have been anyone left in Killarney - the whole town migrated to Tenterfield for the occasion and I think the celebrations are still continuing in Cutters Town. Is football important to our towns? You bet it is. - Casey CUTTERS BACK-TO-BACK IN A THRILLER THE Killarney Cutters celebrations continued well into this week after they upstaged their more fancied rival on Saturday to secure back-to-back Border Rugby League Premierships. It has been a challenging season for the Cutters as they dealt with injuries and suspensions. However, as they did last year they turned adversity into opportunity. After Killarney’s upset win in the Preliminary final, the Tenterfield Tigers knew that the Cutters would come out all guns blazing. The Cutters got off to a great start when Coedie Tandy danced his way over the line to open the scoring. Dion Galloway added the extras. The big crowd of Killarney supporters had plenty to be excited about when Jake Weier scored and Galloway converted to give the visitors a handy 12-0 lead. Despite several forays into Killarney territory, the Tigers could not penetrate the bruising defence of the Cutters who were putting their bodies on the line. Eventually, Tigers half back Wesley Doo

Local Sport Winner of the John MacDonald medal for his Man of the Match performance was centre Joel Koina. Two tries from Koina early in the second half helped take the game away from the Hawks. PREMIERSHIPS GO TO ALL CORNERS OF THE COMPEITITION WATTLES may have grabbed the main prize in the TRL, but no one club dominated the premiership results. Gatton Hawks won back-to-back Reserve grade premierships in a thrilling encounter with Valleys (final score 22-16). The Under 18 competition was also a thriller going down to the wire. Oakey held out Highfields with the final score 38-30. In the C Grade, Clive Berghofer Cup arch rivals Pittsworth and Millmerran went head to head. Pittsworth upset their more fancied rivals 18-16 Millmerran in a close game.
Eight is great!” EIGHT IS GREAT THE Stanthorpe United Soccer Club has once again re-written the history books with a nailbiting win in the Stanthorpe Football Association Grand Final on Saturday. A late goal secured the win for the defending premiers to make it eight grand final wins on the trot. It is an amazing record for this club. United coach Steve McEvoy said it was a sensational game. “Ballandean made it hard for us. They have been strong all season.” The game looked headed for extra time and McEvoy admits he was planning for extra time when son Brett put the ball in the back of the net with a sweet strike. It was a heart breaking loss for Ballandean who were chasing their first grand final win in more than 15 years. Ballandean coach Anthony Rametta was philosophical about the loss saying in the end it came down to the side that made the mistake and unfortunately it was Ballandean. Ballandean fans did have something to smile about earlier in the day when their ladies side took out the Ladies Grand final in a thrilling 3-2 win over favourites Tenterfield. Sarah Day had an outstanding game for Ballandean and was named Player of the Final. There was plenty of drama in the earlier Se-
nior Colts game when the game went to a penalty shootout after the Warwick wolves and United were still locked at 1-1 after extra time. The penalty shootout saw some sharp shooting and equally good goal defence from both sides. In the end it was 3-2 to the Wolves. United started the day with success in the Junior Colts game when they defeated City 2-1. A big crowd enjoyed a full day of great soccer at the Inter club. BACK ON TRACK SCRATCH the surface of most grand finals and you will usually find a good news story and it was no different in Tenterfield. A couple of years ago the BRL Disciplinary Tribunal was forced to hand down a harsh penalty to James Springborg after a nasty incident in a game at Texas. Springborg was given a two-year suspension. Often times when these things happen you never hear of the player again. Not so this young man. He copped the penalty without complaint and realised he had some issues to deal with. His time out of the game made him realise just how much he missed the football and at the beginning of the season he approached the Tenterfield club to train with them until his suspension ended in May. The club welcomed him into their fold and on Saturday there was no prouder Tiger on the field. After the game, I chatted with Springborg. He was naturally disappointed that his team had been beaten. At the moment life is good for Springborg he has his life back on track and is back playing the game he loves. Who knows that premiership might just come his way in the future. The manner in which he has handled himself is a credit to this young bloke and he deserves to be congratulated. MONTHLY MEDAL WINNERS ACROSS the district last Saturday golfers from all clubs played for their Monthly Medals. In Stanthorpe they are considering renaming it the Greenkeeper’s Revenge after players were confronted with some seriously tricky pin positions. They proved no deterrent for Darryl Boekholt who won the day with nett 64, best gross score of 77 and least putts of 25 for the round and he also claimed the 3/12 pin shot. Lyn Ludlow took out the ladies event with nett 71 and best gross score of 94. Margie Locke also had a good day with nett 73 for runner-up and least putts for ladies with 27 for the round. Golfers in Stanthorpe are looking for a big weekend of golf with a single stroke event on Saturday and the club foursome’s championships on Sunday over 27 holes. At the ‘Garra Steven Hampstead shot a solid 70 nett to take out the Medal with Pete Butler a couple back in the Runners-Up spot. Butler also won the putting tied with Gary Sutcliffe. This Saturday players are contesting a 4BBB. A big group of volunteers worked hard last week coring and scarifying the green which will be back in tip
top conditions in no time. In Warwick the golfing weekend got underway in normal fashion with Friday’s Red rooster Rumble which was won by Ian Stewart with 25 points. A big field of 53 turned out in Saturday’s Monthly Medal sponsored by Warwick Real Estate. After a countback, the winner in Division One was Phil Drewery (67). Division Two went the way of John Francis (65). Tim Smith was the Best Junior finishing with a score of 72. This weekend it is the Greenkeepers Revenge in Warwick - who knows where those flags will be. Sunday the Cowboys swap jerseys for golfing gear in annual Cowboys RLFC four ball Ambrose golf day. Team sheets are in pro shop. Players should register at the clubhouse by 11am. Cost is $15 for members of Warwick Golf Club and $25 for non members. SPEERS DAY IT was a Father’s Day win for Mick Speers at Sporters in Stanthorpe last Sunday. Runner-up was Alex Cameron and run-downs went to Marg Locke and Paul Brynes. Byrnes had a good morning he had the best gross and also collected the Pro Pin. The Pin shot on the 12th went to No Won Kim and Bob Watts took the 17th. Meat trays winners were Chenel Doorley and Phil Zikan. Tee-off time this week will be at the normal time between 8-8.30 but remember all players must tee-off the first hole due to the Foursome Championships. NEW FIELD - SOME CHALLENGES THE new Sporting Clay field threw up some challenges for shooters and some teething problems for officials last weekend. All should be ironed out by now. Ross Jackson did not find too many problems. He won the event with Phil Neal filling second spot and Michael Dudgeon in third place. Visitor to the club also Doug Jacobi shot well. A down-the-line shoot was held after the clays. Phil Neal improved on his earlier second place to win the event. Tom Donald and Patrick Moloney filled the minor placings. The pistol boys had a bit of fun with a mini metallic silhouette shoot. Some shooters complained they couldn’t see the targets with open sights let alone hit them. This weekend it is single action and Rimfire rifle events. A reminder that Centrefire rifles not permitted during Rimfire competitions and practice. The Qld State Conference (Annual General Meeting) will be held this weekend in Millmerran. The Inglewood SSAA will be represented by two delegates and two observers. TIGERETTES PURRING THE Tenterfield Tigerettes wrote their names into the BRL history books on Saturday with a thrilling win over arch rivals the Foxy Terriers
in the inaugural Ladies League Tag Grand Final. The Tenterfield girls have led the way all season, however the Foxy Terriers have narrowed the gap between them with every game. Megg Landers who was named Player of the Year opened the Tigerettes account and shortly after Sophie Cooper crossed to take the score to eight-nil after 15 minutes. The Foxies were not going to go down without a fight and Koby Morris opened the visitors account with a great try. Shortly before the half time break Sophie Cooper added another try which was converted by Ashleigh Taylor, taking the score to 14-4 at the half time break. After the break, the Tigerettes were over again when Cooper nailed here third for the day. Taylor converted and the premiership looked to be heading Tenterfield’s way with the score at 20-4. The Foxy’s hit back as Jaime Scott showed the benefits of a long and successful touch career. It was not long before Scott crossed again and when Kylie Belford converted with just six minutes remaining the game was in the balance and the Foxy’s supporters were on their feet. Tigerettes coach Wayne Minns urged his charges to settle their defence and in a thrilling finish where both sides had opportunities the Tigerettes prevailed 20-14. It was no surprise that Sophie Cooper was named Player of the Match after her three-try effort. Ashleigh Taylor picked up the award for the most points of the season. Kylie Belford was named Most Improved while Jaime Scott earned the Golden Boot award for her outstanding field goal in the Preliminary Final. The introduction of the Ladies League Tag has been a great success and a great grandfinal topped off a terrific season.
