Reflecting on his time at the top job, he said three accomplishments stood out, including a staffing restructure which saved council $1.3 million, building a one-council model, and most recently delivering a surplus budget. Don't ignore emergencies RELUCTANCE by some people to acknowledge their need for emergency assistance has prompted Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) to reinforce the importance of calling triple-zero. Darling Downs Local Ambulance Service Network general manager and acting assistant commissioner John Hammond said there were some signs which should not be ignored when deciding whether or not to call an ambulance. “We see a lot of people who wait too long to call triple-zero because they think their situation isn’t serious enough,” he said.
“A lot of people mistakenly blame chest pains on things like indigestion, when they could be suffering a serious heart attack. “Other situations like breathing difficulties, uncontrolled bleeding and lapses in consciousness should be treated equally as seriously, and an ambulance should be called immediately.” When you call triple-zero, you will be put through to a Telstra operator who will ask if you require ambulance, police or fire. You will then be connected to an emergency medical dispatcher. Mr Hammond also encouraged residents to get to know
their neighbours, particularly those from non-English speaking backgrounds. “The Darling Downs attracts a lot of international workers who speak English as a second language,” he said. “As emergency numbers differ across the world, stressing the importance of calling triple-zero (000) in an emergency to new residents, as well as visitors, to Australia is very important. “Approach neighbours who are new to the area and talk to them about what to do in the event of an emergency - you never know, your own advice may save your life.”

Drop in demand behind pole volt, says minister
Projects off the table LOCAL landholders can rest easy after Ergon Energy gave assurances that further infrastructure projects are off the table for Stanthorpe in the foreseeable future. An Ergon spokesman said a number of strategies were available if required to meet the load growth of Stanthorpe in the “medium to long term”, including “installing capacitor banks at the Pozieres and Stanthorpe substations to further increase the capacity of the 33kV line”. “Emerging solutions such as demand management, distributed generation, including solar PV systems and battery storage, rather than further infrastructure projects, are likely to be part of any longer term solution,” he said. The spokesman said now that the voltage regulator had been installed, up keep could be done without power supply interruptions to customers. “Maintenance of the 110kV line that requires it to be taken out of service will be scheduled for two months each in autumn and spring when the load is lower than at other times of the year,” he said. “Now the voltage regulator has been installed, the 33kV line can meet the full demand from the Stanthorpe region at these times.” Ergon was asked how much money had been spent to come to the conclusion to scrap the second high voltage power line, but a response was not provided by the time of print. - Alena Higgins
A DECLINE in demand and changes to “goldplating” standards were the reasons behind the decision to scrap the proposed second power line, according to Minister for Energy and Water Supply Mark McArdle. “A lot has changed since plans for the second line route were announced in 2011,” the MP explained in a statement. “Demand forecasts show the load on the existing 110kV line has declined and the Newman Government’s changes to rein in Labor’s overly prescriptive ‘gold-plating’ standards mean Ergon Energy can find more affordable ways to deliver security of supply.” Meanwhile, Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg described the new solution as a “winwin” for the community and Ergon Energy.

ERGON Energy has dumped its plans to build a second high voltage power line from Warwick to Stanthorpe, ending years of conflict with landholders along the five proposed line routes. Queensland’s Energy Minister Mark McArdle confirmed the $60 million 110kV power line was dead in the water by a statement on Saturday. Instead, an existing 33kV power line that connects the two communities has been reinforced with a new voltage regulator. Coming in at a mere fraction of the cost, the $225,000 voltage regulator, which was commissioned on Friday at Dalveen, will mean the 33kV line between the Rose City and Granite Belt can provide a more reliable and complete back-up supply to the existing 110kV line. But Warwick resident Anthony Maw, who staunchly opposed the costly project since it first grew legs three years ago, said the energy provider could have avoided the unnecessary and protracted angst of local landholders if it had listened to reason earlier on.
not asked for a power line (in the second regulatory test) they had provided a feasible solution which didn’t require a power line, why (Ergon) was still annoying people by pursuing an easement,” he said. Mr Maw suggested Ergon wanted the easements “all along” for “coal seam gas or connecting to the southern grid”, however he acknowledged Ergon had denied easement acquisition was for anything other than combating Stanthorpe’s limitation of power. “By not proceeding with any of the identified options after three years of unnecessary expense and disruption to people’s lives, Ergon is now doing what they are required to do by the Electricty Act,” he said, referring to the requirement of a transmission authority to operate and maintain (including repair and replace) and protect its transmission grid to ensure adequate economic, reliable and safe transmission of electricity at all times. Mr Maw’s claims were put to Ergon for comment, but no response was provided, by time of print.
“My initial reaction to the final report of the regulatory test was one of relief that common sense had at last prevailed and that no one on any of the proposed power lines routes was to be imposed upon by an unnecessary high voltage power line,” he said. “I am satisfied with the result as it stands, but am disappointed that many people had to work constantly for such a long time to be able to present logical facts to a company who did not want to listen.” Mr Maw campaigned heavily as a member of the United Land Owners Group (ULOG) and AWARE Group to expose flaws in Ergon’s argument for the need for the of the highvoltage power line, including discrepancies in Stanthorpe’s interruptions and forecast usage load. He said when Ergon was required by the Australian Energy Regulator to undertake a second regulatory test, it provided four options and a draft recommendation which made no further mention of the second power line. “The AWARE Group wrote to the regulator and asked him why, when not only had (Ergon)

Kim does her bit for cancer research THE woman once dubbed ‘cooking’s JK Rowling’ is heading back to the Southern Downs to promote her latest cookbook. Popular 4 Ingredients author Kim McCosker aims to raise $100,000 from the sale of ‘Cook 4 a Cure’ to help the National Breast Cancer Foundation fund cancer research and reach its goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. The busy mother-of-three, who was born in Stanthorpe and raised in Mundubbera, will make an author appearance at Warwick Big W on Thursday 25 September from 1pm to 2pm where she will sign copies of Cook 4 a Cure and chat with locals about the inspiration behind the book. “When I learnt that 37 Australians are diagnosed with breast cancer each day and that seven die daily from the disease, I decided
to simply do something,” she said. “Given the 4 Ingredients team will be an average age of 60 in 2030, we wanted to help to make this goal a reality before we hit the age where breast cancer is so devastating.” The book includes more than 60 recipes using four ingredients or less as well as “beautiful” stories of cancer victims and their families. The successful entrepreneur will donate $4 from every book sold to breast cancer research and is expected to visit Stanthorpe in November as part of her threemonth promotional tour. Ms McCosker rose to fame in 2007 when she and her former business partner self-published their first cookbook, 4 Ingredients. She has since gone on to sell over eight million cookbooks worldwide.

Rate rage in retrospect By ALENA HIGGINS AN ANGRY group of Rosenthal Heights ratepayers are demanding answers after being slugged two years’ worth of back-dated rates last week. The unwitting Warner Street residents were among an estimated 340 ratepayers affected after Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) sent out supplementary rate notices. It comes after the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) undertook maintenance valuations on their properties following the implementation of the new Southern Downs Planning Scheme on 14 August 2012, which saw their land re-zoned from rural to urban-type. But, while they only received the new valuation certificate from the State Government department in early June this year, council has required they pay the adjusted rates dating back to 14 August 2012. The neighbours say they are furious at the development and have labelled it “blatant extortion”. “Seriously, no-one budgeted for it,” Kate Keogh said. “We came out here for a certain lifestyle, not to be part of a town block ... only to find suddenly we’re almost going to be rated off our properties.”
Marketing manager Guy Cantrel with Granite Belt Wine and Tourism board members, Brad Hutchings, Tony Hassall, Michael Bourke, Peter O’Reilly, Sam Costanzo and Peter Reid.
GBWT selects new board By ALENA HIGGINS MICHAEL Bourke has been elected unopposed as the president of Granite Belt Wine and Tourism (GBWT) following its annual general meeting on 28 August. Michael and Ann Bourke’s Jester Hill Winery is one of the six Granite Belt wineries that have attained five-star status in the latest James Halliday Wine Companion. Mr Bourke, who takes over from Bill James, of Creek Cottages in Ballandean, said it was a “privilege” to represent GBWT members. He said the first task was to recruit “a couple more directors to balance the board” and develop a marketing plan to take the entire “destination” forward. “Our marketing budget is tight so we need to make ev-
ery dollar deliver for the region,” Mr Bourke said. “We need to work closely with the Regional Tourism Authority and no-one is sure of what lies ahead in terms of the planned consolidation between GBWT and Warwick Tourism and Events, but we still need to ensure the Granite Belt retains its own identity.” Also elected to the board was Peter O’Reilly, CEO of the Queensland College of Wine Tourism. Mr O’Reilly is a recent arrival to the Granite Belt and brings extensive experience in tourism accommodation, development and marketing. Both Tony Hassall, of Just Red Wines, and Sam Costanzo, of Golden Grove Estate, were re-elected. Mr Hassall, who is a qualified accountant and former
wine industry development officer for the DPI at Applethorpe, takes on the role of treasurer, while Mr Costanzo will continue his role as chair of the wine industry sub-committee. Peter Gray of Wine Discovery Tours and Brad Hutchings of Savina Lane Wines did not face re-election as they were midway through their two-year terms. GBWT’s new marketing manager Guy Cantrel confirmed there were still “two or three” seats on the board available to be filled and encouraged people with the right credentials to put their hand up. He said he “was keen to see any competent person” come forward when asked if he would like to see a female represented on the board.
Margaret Collins, who was hit particularly hard and owes nearly $1000, described the fiasco as “rude” and “unacceptable”. “It is just like going to Harvey Norman and making a purchase then two years later they come back to you and say ‘Oh, we should have sold it for $200 more - you owe us that and if you don’t we will charge you interest.” Under local government legislation, SDRC must adjust rates if the value of land changes so that the rates are calculated on the new value for the period that starts on the day the change takes effect. However, where a valuation change would result in an increase in rates, the local council has discretion under local government legislation to decide whether or not to seek to recover the amount of rates of charges owing, a DNRM spokesman said. Carol Devitt said SDRC’s “strong arm” tactics when it came to collecting the arrears, giving only three weeks' grace and threatening 11 per cent compounding interest, was disappointing. “It is certainly sad that they have only given you such a short notice to pay it,” she said. “People do not have that kind of cash lying around.” The group also questioned
what SDRC planned to do with the extra cash, being that it had already handed down its 2014’15 budget. Responding to queries on the timeframe taken to complete the valuations, a DNRM spokesman said “the department only obtained the data on the zoning changes from SDRC in April 2013” and some properties required “ground truthing” due to the extent of potential change in value. Then before issuing the valuation notices to landowners, amendments were reviewed internally and consultation occurred with some landowners and SDRC in May 2014, the spokesman said. SDRC acting CEO David Tuxford said council would hold a special meeting today to discuss the supplementary rates notices and the impact on ratepayers. “Council discussions will take into consideration the payment deadlines and instalments,” Mr Tuxford said. He also confirmed SDRC publicised the information about the new planning scheme once the document was finalised and the change of zoning for Rosenthal Heights would have been part of the media promotion.

SOME 100 years ago the young men of Tenterfield and across Australia answered the call and left our shores - many never to return. At the weekend another group of men answered their own call - to remember and to keep the memory of those young men alive at an event which is expected to be the first of many for them in the next year or so. Members of the 12th Light Horse, Major J.F. Thomas Troop (J.F. Thomas was the Tenterfield-based lawyer in the Boer War Breaker Morant case) were on-hand on Saturday as Tenterfield turned back the clock and remembered the events of almost 100 years ago. Troop leader Vince Sherry said the group held a display and were part of a memorial service commemorating WWI on Saturday at the Tenterfield Showground. The event was part of a commemorative Light Horse weekend organised by Deborah Lions and remembered the Tenterfield region’s strong connection with the Light Horse. The weekend started with an art exhibition and complimentary cheese and wine tasting at the Banquet Hall of the School of Arts on Friday. This exhibition, which is continuing, will feature works by Mr Basil Gay and his wife Wendy from Brisbane. The exhibition will host 15 artworks, all of which depict differing aspects of the Light Horse during wartime. Basil has, in his unique way, captured many of

the emotions experienced by the men during that difficult time in our history. The weekend also featured the display as well as a bush dance and church service. Mr Sherry said the troop were expecting a big year next year as Australians commemorated Gallipoli, however things were already starting to build. Later this month members of the troop will head to Brisbane
to help re-enact the moment when troops first left this country to head overseas. A parade will be held through the street of the city as part of the re-enactment. Mr Sherry said next year they would also be part of the Tenterfield Show, which was holding its own commemoration of WWI and also Anzac Day as well as many other functions across the country.
SIX nominees from Warwick and surrounds are among 28 finalists named in this year’s Condamine Awards to celebrate outstanding contributions to the region’s environment. The winners across nine award categories will be announced at the awards and gala dinner on Friday 31 October at the Empire Theatre in Toowoomba. Hosted by not-for-profit group Condamine Alliance, the aim of the biennial Awards is to recognise and celebrate outstanding contributions by individuals and organisations to improve, protect or promote natural resource management in the Condamine catchment. Condamine Alliance chief executive officer Phil McCullough said the calibre of entrants and nominees for the second Condamine Awards was of a high standard. “The level of expertise and commitment demonstrated by individuals and organisations to the environment in this region is impressive,” Mr McCullough said. “This year’s awards has attracted entries from universities, festivals, conservationists, journalists, biologists, schools, councils, landholders, Landcare and more. “Often their contribution goes unrecognised or unno-

End of an era THE board of Stanthorpe’s Artworks on Davadi has announced the centre will close on 17 October. The community space has been looking for bigger premises for six months after the building they currently rent was bought by supermarket giant Aldi, but failed to find anything they can afford. “It is ironic that Artworks’ success has contributed, in a way, to its demise,” board chairman Harley West said. “Needing a new space to house all the groups, classes, workshops and individuals has meant that we needed a larger space and as such the rent is prohibitive for a not-for-profit
organisation.” Former Artworks committee chairman James Massey said it was with great sadness that the board had taken the decision to close the doors on a place that has become the creative and community heart of Stanthorpe. “The amazing thing about Artworks is that it began as a one-month lease when the building became the venue of an art exhibition which celebrated International Day of People with a Disability in 2011,” Mr Massey said. “That exhibition, ‘State of Mind’, was a resounding success. “From this small beginning the lease was then extended to
three months, then a year and now, almost three years later, Artworks is very much a part of the Stanthorpe community.” Over the years Artworks has held numerous exhibitions, film nights, art and creative workshops. It has become the home of the Thursday art group, Stanthorpe Amnesty, Ukulele players, Yoga classes, U3A classes and other meetings. Artworks has also partnered with local employment agencies to support marginalised people to re-enter the workforce and the community through volunteering in the cafe. It has been successful in attracting philanthropic funds for
Southern Downs CEO resigns From Page 1 But it has not all been smooth sailing for the outgoing CEO, who came under scrutiny earlier this year after a number of unnamed councillors claimed he was wielding too much power. Mr Roach said he would miss the “wonderful community” and “one of the best teams he has ever assembled as CEO”, but when the opportunity came up at Ipswich he “couldn’t knock it back”. “It’s a very progressive part of south east Queensland driven by a passionate council - I’m looking forward to being part of it,” he said. Brisbane-based family. “They were over the moon when I told them,” he said. Mayor Peter Blundell thanked Mr Roach for his ten-
ure and wished him well in his next career move. “I realise there were some big challenges Andrew faced coming into the CEO’s position and I believe he did a good job of tackling various issues including organisational restructure and implementing cultural change programs,” Cr Blundell said. “There is still a lot to be done in bedding down the change implemented within the Southern Downs and we will need a unified approach to this, certainly over the next 18 months of this local government term.” SDRC is expected to meet this week to discuss the process of recruitment for a permanent CEO.

“The saddest thing for me is the number of people, who are often socially isolated, who come in, some daily to have a cuppa and a chat. Where will these people meet?” Artworks
co-ordinator Leisa Cavallo said. Community members are invited to attend a “farewell bash” with music, food on Sunday 12 October, from 1pm.

THE shockwaves from a massive truck explosion earlier this month on the Mitchell Highway near Wyandra was the cause of a previously identified earthquake near Charleville, Geoscience Australia has determined. Initial reports of the location and time of the recorded signals indicated a naturally occurring seismic event some time following the truck explosion. However, further analysis conducted by
Geoscience Australia seismologists over the past week has identified the truck explosion and suspected earthquake to be the same event. Eight people were injured and road infrastructure decimated when a truck carrying 50 tonnes of ammonium nitrate crashed on 5 September, causing a “catastrophic explosion”.

Strange boundary DOES water fluoridation affect only those citizens who own their own homes? I am totally against mass “medication” through water supplies and actually consider it to be immoral but as I am in rental accommodation I apparently won’t have any say in the SDRC’s Fluoride Survey which is being distributed with Water Rate Notices. What a strange survey when such a high percentage of citizens are completely ignored! There are many reasons why we don’t want fluoridated water - brittle bones and joint stiffness, lowered IQ in children, decreased thyroid function, bone cancer in young boys, bottle fed babies ingesting up to 200 times as much fluoride as breast fed, dental fluorosis - the list goes on and on.
Perhaps your newspaper can run its own survey on fluoridation so that ALL people in the SDRC area can have their say in this very important matter. To just ignore all citizens in rental properties hardly seems to acknowledge any form of democracy! Shirley Eastick, Warwick.
Bleater ALP front man Shorten bleats about defence contracts going overseas. But little Billy ignores deliberate union sabotage of our military equipment, guns, radars, radios, food and ammo in World War 2. Our servicemen suffered and died as a result. In 1940 despicable workers making life rafts for troopships went on strike. NSW munitions workers
banned overtime in 1941 unless paid tax-free. Our soldiers in WW2 were paid six shillings (60 cents) a day. No act was too low for wharf unionists. In 1941 hundreds of soldiers on board a ship docked in Fremantle entrusted letters for their families to wharfies who offered to post them in return for beer money. Those letters never arrived. In 1942, traitorous watersiders wrecked aircraft engines by dropping them from cargo nets. Rations for soldiers in New Guinea were stolen by unionists and vehicles smashed when dropped from winches. Every major Australian warship was targeted by union cowards using strikes or sabotage. For 36 hours in 1945 unionists refused to let emaciated returning POWs land back in Australia. When Centurion tanks arrived here from the UK in the 1950s, one
was “accidentally” dropped into the harbour during unloading? A RAN Petty Officer told me in the 1960s that his sailors could change a 4.5 inch gun barrel at sea in about an hour, but dock yard unionists in Sydney took days for the same task. As a career serviceman I recall wharfies stopping our supplies getting to us in Vietnam and a postal union planned to stop mail and parcels from home being delivered to us! Who in their right minds would want Shorten’s pals working on any new submarines or surface vessels for our navy? Probably only Sarah Sea Patrol and her disturbed, deluded and ignorant accomplices. Geoff Pickering, Rosenthal Heights.

What’s On In the groove at The Grove By MAVIS STOWER OF INGLEWOOD THE Grove was grooving at the weekend as people from all over the Southern Downs, Brisbane and Northern NSW headed to Coolmunda Olives on Sunday, for music and lunch. Visitors from as far afield as Brisbane, Toowoomba, Warwick, Stanthorpe, Goondiwindi, Kurrumbul, Yelarbon, Texas and Inglewood were among the large crowd that enjoyed a day of
relaxed entertainment featuring live music and an alfresco lunch last Sunday at the first official “Grooving in the Grove” function at Coolmunda Olives 19 kilometres east of Inglewood. “Grooving in the Grove” is the brainchild of Inglewood’s doctor Colin Owen and his wife Gesine. Their olive grove, which they established in 1998, has more than 7000 flourishing trees and is currently the largest organic grove in Queensland.
Late last year they invited family and friends to a trialling of a scaled down version of “Grooving in the Grove”. The enthusiastic response to the trial encouraged them to proceed with the project. Their aim is to provide a regular musical event for the community and to stage it in the exceptional venue they have created on their property which overlooks Coolmunda Dam.

MOTHER and daughter bridal team Sue Burley and Peta Murphy from Weddings by Peta and Sue have turned a successful bridal expo into a way of helping others. “Today we handed over the money to the Salvos. Steve Spencer said we raised enough money to help support three families for a week,” the pair said. “That was a great feeling. “We had about 200 people through the doors, the response was overwhelming. It was such a great day and the expo was full of love. “The locals gave us some excellent feedback on the event, and with the broad range of
The Salvos’ Steve Spencer, event organisers Peta Murphy and Sue Burley, and Michelle Cole. business stallholders there was plenty to see. “We booked many weddings and showroom appointments with brides on the day of the expo. We were so thankful to
work along side the wonderful crew at Rupert's. “Rupert's had functions and accommodation booked on the day of the expo. “Head chef Anita made some beautiful cheesecake, muffins and delicious soup which everyone enjoyed. “Lots of the exhibitors gave vouchers/gifts which were drawn on the day to some very lucky winners. There was face painter Dr Doodle who was painting the kids’ faces which kept them happy while parents enjoyed the expo.” The event was so successful that the pair and the gang from Rupert’s are hoping to run another.

with Sudhir ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20) Complete what you’ve started. Break the old astrological cliché that Rams are good at instigation but are lousy finishers. After all, astrology is for identifying patterns we have to transcend. It isn’t about remaining typecast forever. The week starts of on an earthy note. Ground thyself. TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20) The Moon begins the week in Taurus. She sets up a powerful earthy thrust, that reinforces all that is good in you. This includes sensuality, stick-ability, reliability and more. With Venus and the Sun luxuriant in Virgo, you are likely to feel like the bovine equivalent of a pig in mud. GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) With the general astrological foundations well set, it becomes possible for you to fly high. Groundedness serves flightiness in ways we rarely imagine. Entertain ideas that are exalting and innovative. Refuse to be dumbed down by the collective tone. The world needs extra vision. CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22) Slowly and quietly you are taking yourself to a position of influence. The Taurus Moon, at the beginning of the week, assists you with the energy you need to diligently get on with it. It is your personal power that is rising to the forefront. With this shining, politics are not required. LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22) Expand quietly. Allow your horizons to broaden, without falling into the trap of announcing every incremental shift on social media. To keep doing that is to give your energy away before it has fully formed. This is a time for quiet formulation. Any restraints are serving a purpose. VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22) The Sun is in your garden, helping all that you are to grow. Venus is also shining on you, inviting you to experiment with all available varieties of delight. You are only inhibited by the limits of your imagination. Step outside preconceived notions that stop you from imagining more. LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23) Though life is presently favouring the fortunes of those who are comfortable with groundedness and earthiness, you aren’t being fully left alone. Mercury is in Libra. He is here to make it clear that when you name things out of habit, life is less mysterious and creative. Be un-knowing. SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21) Mars is very nearly out of your lair. With him, will go a certain amount of fire that has been in your belly. If there’s anything you need to do that makes use of his adventurousness and bravado, now’s the time. Once he’s gone, there will be less stress but less excitement too. Finish things. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21) Communication. Communication. Communication. You aren’t going to learn what is really going on unless you enter the conversation. If the conversation hasn’t been started, then start it. If it’s stalling, then turn the ignition. Keep your eye off the horizon. Deal with what’s before you. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19) The Moon shines a certain kind of light on you at the beginning of the week. It helps you make sense of all that has been difficult and tricky. We are here to get to the root of a very great mystery. We are not here to decode it. We are here to experience if fully. Grasp possibility. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18) Under the surface of the tone of normality being set by the Virgo Sun, much is going on. There is a battle going on between your desire for action and your desire to stay patient and allow life to determine change. Be a witness to this tension. Some kind of move is certainly to be made. PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20) The Virgo Sun provides a mirror in which you can see much about yourself that is normally unreflected. Perhaps you will see just how much you entertain illusion, and you will be drawn to revision attitudes in a way that is more grounded and real. Take your work to a new level.

NRL wrap
Only the brave could tip this one By CASEY O’CONNOR
1154456-AM38-14
NOT even the bravest tipster or most talented script writer could have foreseen what played out in the first week of the 2014 NRL finals series. It might be that fairytales are real after all and dreams do come true. One thing I do know is that fans were treated to some sensational games in round one of the finals. The Bunnies gave their fans reason to dream of glory when they blew the Sea Eagles back to the north shore. Panthers fans are still not quite sure if they are dreaming or if Jamie Soward’s field goal was real. The Panthers did not lead the Roosters at any
time in the game until Jamie Soward’s heroics in the 79th minute proving it’s never over until the fat lady sings. The Bunnies and Panthers move straight to the preliminary finals earning a rest this week. JT’s Cowboys dismissed the Broncos and are now circling the wagons as they prepare to take on the wounded Roosters. The Bulldogs upset football royalty to progress to the second round of the finals as Melbourne investigate who stole their will to win. On Friday night, the Roosters must put their gutwrenching loss to Penrith behind them if they are to defend their title. The Roosters failed to respect the football or their opponents. The Tricolours

completed only one of their opening seven sets against the Panthers. Their dream of back-to-back premierships will not be a reality if they continue to throw up those stats. Certainly, if they show the Cowboys any lack of respect, they will find themselves paying a high price. The Roosters welcome back Origin forward Aidan Guerra from suspension and Jake Friend looks set to return. The Cowboys led the Broncos 24nil at the break and although they had to survive a second half charge led by Justin Hodges they always looked in control of the game. Cowboys gun second-rower Tariq Sims has been hit with a grade three shoulder charge and
looks certain to finish his career with the Cowboys on the sideline. Coach Paul Green, formerly the Tricolours’ assistant coach, will be hoping the Cowboys have what it takes to kill off the Roosters premiership aspirations. Both sides have everything to play for and it will come down to who want this more. The Sea Eagles have a big job ahead as they prepare to take on the Bulldogs on Saturday. The Bunnies embarrassed the Eagles and they must regroup after the pummelling. They looked stale and humdrum against the Rabbitohs. There was a lack of strike power in Manly’s performance. They are likely

to go into battle this week without Anthony Watmough. Watmough is facing a one-game ban for a dangerous throw on Greg Inglis. Top cricket for Cooper The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
HE has been known for years in Queensland cricketing circles as Mr Cricket, but on Monday night Lew Cooper was made a Life Member of Queensland Cricket. Of course, my association with Lew goes back a long way as many are aware. Lew had an illustrious career as a wicket keeper and played 26 games for Queensland and also captained the side. He was a little unlucky that during his playing career, a bloke by the name of Wally Grout held him out of the Queensland on many occasions and possibly the Australian side. Lew went on to be a very successful cricket administrator and was secretary of Queensland Cricket for many years. Some including myself will fondly remember him as manager of the old Cricketers Club before the grounds was reconfigured. He is of course well known in the district for bringing the Queensland Cricket Club over 40s side to both Warwick and Stanthorpe for many years. Lew also runs the Wanderers Cricket Club in Brisbane and single handedly organises the annual Wanderers Cricket tour to country Queensland. He is also heavily involved in the Queensland Lord’s Taverners Cricket club, which among other things, has raised an enormous amount of money for charity. If you have a worthy cause, Lew Cooper is your go to fund-raising man as we have seen in recent times in Warwick and Woodenbong. A couple of years back, Lew was awarded an OAM, but I am sure his Life Membership of Queensland Cricket will be much treasured by a man who has given his life to the game. It is an honour well deserved. - Casey QUEEN AND NOW PRINCESS THE undisputed Queen of the Australian Turf, Black Caviar, has a new role - a proud mum after the much-anticipated birth of her foal last weekend. Nellie, as she is affectionately known, gave birth to a filly early on Saturday morning and Mum and Princess are reportedly both doing very well. The baby filly by Exceed and Excel unlike her mother has a small white marking on her forehead and two white socks on her front feet. Managing part-owner Neil Werrett said: “She (Black Caviar) was a champion on the track and she’s proved to be a champion mum with the safe arrival of her first foal overnight. “We’re incredibly proud that she’s given birth to a filly and equally delighted that both Black Caviar and her foal are healthy and doing well.” The owners have indicated that the filly will not be sold despite a predicted price tag in excess of the $5 million paid for her half-brother “Jimmy” who unfortunately died before he could race. While it is a long and hazardous journey from the paddock to the racecourse, the Australian public is sure to be watching the progress of this little Princess of the People every step of the way. Nellie tends to her new-born foal.
GAINEY ADDS ANOTHER WARWICK five eighth Matt Gainey added another trophy to his already impressive collection last Saturday night when he was named Cowboys Player of the Year at the Cowboys’ presentation night. Gainey has a great year since joining the Cowboys and played an integral role in getting the A grade side to the TRL Preliminary final. His move to the Cowboys in 2014 follows a very successful stint as captain coach of the Inglewood Roosters. Gainey took the club to three grand finals and won two premierships. He was the BRL Player of the Year in 2012. Jacob Morgan was named Cowboys’ Colt of the Year. A little further up the road at Wattles, it was no surprise when Matt Duggan was name Wattles Footballer of the Year. Only two weeks ago prior to Wattles success in the TRL grand final, Duggan picked up the TRL award for Player of the Year. WALLABIES KEEP RECORD INTACT THE Qantas Wallabies held off a late surge from Argentina at Cbus Super Stadium on Saturday night to keep their unbeaten run on Australian soil in 2014. The 32-25 victory handed the Wallabies the Pumas trophy for another consecutive year. Despite the score line, Australia dominated in possession and metres band, and the score could have been much higher but for a raft of handling errors from the Wallabies. Australia started the match brilliantly with quick ball from the base of the ruck that allowed the Qantas Wallabies to put Michael Hooper in place to score the first try of the match in the third minute.
The Wallabies and Pumas fly high in a lineout on Saturday night at Cbus Stadium. AWESOME FOURSOME WE are pleased to report that all playing partners remain on speaking terms following last Sunday’s foursome championships at Stanthorpe Golf Club and are even looking forward to the upcoming mixed foursomes. Close finishes were the order of the day with only one shot separating the winners in both grades. Rob Reeves and Mark McCosker claimed the title with a score of 120 in A grade. The B grade winners were David Townsend and Eric McLellan with 139. Angelo Maugeri and Aaron Simmers had the best nett and once again that was by a very close margin. Richelle Reardon and Lyn Ludlow took out the ladies’ foursomes which was sponsored by Granite Belt Brewery. Their score was 137. Kay Webb and Margie Locke took the nett title.
Pictured with their booty following their win in the A Grade division of the Foursome Championships are Rob Reeves and Mark McCosker. The Summit bowlers tasted success at the recent District Pennant competition in Inglewood. They are currently preparing to take on the Downs winners in Toowoomba on October 11. On Saturday, the single stroke event sponsored by 4 Water Supplies was won by Angelo Maugeri with nett 66. In a tight finish, three players finished on nett 67. A countback was required before Fred Wharton was named runner-up with Stephen Hooper and Richard Reardon settling for Captain’s stakes. The ladies event was won by Margie Locke with nett 71 ahead of runner-up Lyn Ludlow with nett 72. Lyn also held the approach at 17 and Tric Fittock took a ball in the run down. This Saturday, the club is holding a single stableford, Dixon Homes’ golf day sponsored by Wes Smith Building. Tee off is from 11am and the time sheet is on the board. BIG WEEKEND FOR BOWLERS HAVE bowls will travel was the standard last weekend for Summit Bowlers with two teams competing in the Warwick Fours Carnival on Sunday. The 3 x 16 end event was won by D. Christensen’s Warwick team. The Summit’s Len Covill and crew of Wayne Thomas, Kurt Empen and Paul Zamprogno were first-round winners. It was certainly a busy weekend for Summit bowlers who played the Q. Stanley and M. Sweeney Trophy day on Saturday. A solid field of 20 bowlers competed for the cash with set play of 2 x 9 end bouts. The last nine end set was almost completed by all before play was abandoned due to rain. The results were: C. Stratford R. Newlands and R. Capelli 10:3; 7:7 - Winners against A. Zamprogno, T. Sweeney and R. Slack. J. Shannon and K. Mungall 7:8; 4:6 - Runnersup against sponsors Q. Stanley and M. Sweeney. A. McGlashan and D. Barker 10:7; 8:4 v A. White and D. Stanley and B. Brown and L. Covill 8:7; 3:2 V. M. Balkwill and W. Thomas. This Saturday is Patron’s Day at the Summit. A reminder that the successful Summit Pennants team will take on the downs winners in Toowoomba on 11 October. Another date for the diary is the summit club’s annual Apple Blossom Carnival weekend set down for 25 and 26 October.
SMALL FIELD RUMBLES ORGANISERS of the Red Rooster rumble in Warwick are wondering what has happened to their players -where are you all only 12 players went around in last week’s event. Perhaps, it was an early omen for the Sydney Roosters fate on Saturday night. Dave Duroux had the winning score of 22 points, followed by Judy Lester on 20 points. Only one pin shot and that went to Mal Crawford on the 16th and the only pin that went off was by Mal Crawford on the 16th. GREEN KEEPER'S REVENGE GWEN Mills had the last laugh in last weekend’s Green keeper’s revenge (an Irish Four Ball) when she landed her a hole in one at the 13th last Saturday. It was Mills’ second hole in won in as many months. Dianne Evans, Melanie McLennan, Anna Cox and Patsy McIntosh were the eventual winners with 89 points after a countback tipped them just ahead of Garry Adcock, Ian Stewart, Don Stewart and Mick Banks, who also finished with 89. Pins went to Ken Burley (5), Yvonne Pinington (7), Viv Roser (9), Ellie Casey (11), and no surprises Gwen Mills at while 16 went begging. COWBOYS RLFC - BIG TURN OUT IT was a busy day on the greens last Sunday with 92 players going around in the four ball Ambrose for the Cowboys RLFC big day. Of course, some appeared a little worse for wear following the Cowboys presentation on Saturday night. The winner of best nett was the team of Jeremy Ralph, Tim Sutton, Scott Beard, and Garth Miller with 53.25. Runner-up best nett was the combination Charlie Morrison, Kath Morrison, Bill Morrison and Eamon Cochrane who finished with 54.25. Winner of best gross was Geoff Hinze, Sam Hinze, Buddy Hicks, and Wayne Falkner with seven under, 62, off the stick. The Bradman award went to Scott Fischer, Mitch Washbourne, Craig Bell, and Rick McGahan. This Saturday the Horse and Jockey are sponsoring a single stableford event and on Sunday it is the men’s foursome championships.

Local Sport Killarney captain coach John Trindall and team mate Lee-Jaye Cooper accept the premiership trophy from BRL chairman Casey O’Connor.
A 36 hole stroke event, sponsored by Advanced Metal Products. Timesheets for both are in the pro shop. A reminder to all golfers - When scoring your card always record the stableford scores in a stroke event as these scores are entered into Golflink by the handicapper Garry Adcock. COLLEGIANS SHINE COLLEGIANS Junior Rugby league had three teams in last weekend’s Warwick and District Junior Rugby League Grand Finals and it was a great result for the club which went home with premierships in Under 11, Under 12 and Under 14s. The Under 16 grand final was a one-way affair with Eastern Suburbs who hosted the 2014 grand finals running out 42-4 winners of Goondiwindi. The day began positively for Collegians with a nail-biting 18-12 win over Wattles in extra time after the scores were level at 12- all at full time. The Under 12s continued the trend with a great win over Goondiwindi. Gundy led 14-8 at half time, but Collegians fought back scoring 20 unanswered points in the second half to claim the second grand final for the club, with the final score 28-14. In the Under 13 grand final, Goondiwindi were too strong for Stanthorpe running away with a 40-10 victory. GREEN ON THE GREEN BRUCE Green had success on the greens last Sunday at Sporters in Stanthorpe and came up a winner slightly ahead of runner-up Alex Cameron. The run-downs went to Jamie Mitchell
and Paul Byrnes who also had the best gross and claimed the pin shot on the third. Mark Lynam grabbed the Pro Pin. Seen leaving the club in the company of meat trays were Alex Cameron and Dick Hilton. There are unconfirmed reports of Mick Speer receiving a red card, but our sources are unsure if there were too many shots taken for the Pin Shot. Tee off is once again at the normal time of 8am, and visitors and first timers are always made welcome. FOCUS TURNS TO SPRING CARNIVAL AS the football season draws to a close, focus begins to turn to Spring Racing and both the Stanthorpe and Warwick race clubs have preparations well in hand for their signature Cup meetings in October. Stanthorpe Turf Club president Chips Brunckhorst reports that interest in the annual Caulfield Cup Day meeting in Stanthorpe is high with secretary Jill Brunckhorst already fielding plenty of calls regarding bookings. The Stanthorpe course is looking good and there have already been plenty of working bees to ensure things are in tip top condition on 18 October. While preparations are well underway locally for Spring Racing things are really heating up in Melbourne. Racing Victoria announced last week that 19 European horses have entered quarantine in Newmarket (England) where they will spend two weeks before heading to Australia. RV’s international recruiter Leigh Jordon said
it was a record number of international invaders. They will be spearheaded by frequent flyer and runner-up in the 2013 Melbourne Cup Red Cadeaux who is returning for a fourth consecutive spring carnival. The international contingent includes a mix of gallopers from UK, Ireland, Germany and France. Last year’s Caulfield Cup runner-up Dandino and the 2013 Mackinnon Stakes winner Side Glance are making the trip along with three highly rated gallopers in Ambivalent, Mutual Regard and proectionist. Six of the 19 horses will be joining Australian stables headed by Cafe Society, who is joining the Gai Waterhouse stable. A total of 146 horses have nominated for the Cup and early betting markets are headed by the Gai Waterhouse trained, The Offer. Time to start checking out the form guides or sharpening the pins. LUTTER AND SCHULTZ WINNERS ALAN Lutter and Kevin Schultz combined well to collar a win in the 4BBB last weekend in Wallangarra. Gary Sutcliffe and Taffy Edwards were not too far astern in the runners-up spot. Pin shots went to Gary Sutcliffe at nine and at 11 Alan Pearce managed to stop one close on a soft green. Pearce also took out the best approach shot. It will be a busy weekend at the ’Garra with the Flag Event on Saturday 20 September and Sunday 21 September is the annual 4BBB Charity Breast Cancer Day. Tee off in that event is
set down for 9.30am - 10.30am. There are some great prizes up for grabs, and organisers would love to see a great crowd support this worthy cause. KILLARNEY CELEBRATE THE Killarney Cutters celebrated long and hard into last week after their back-to-back premiership win. Rumour has it that the LifeLine store in Killarney did a roaring trade as the boys dressed to impress on a very Mad Monday. GIRLS FINE IN NINES IN a real boost for women’s rugby league organisers of the Auckland Nines have announced that the Australia Rugby League team, the Jillaroos and their Kiwi counterparts the Kiwi Ferns have been included in the 2015 draw. The Australian Jillaroos and New Zealand Kiwi Ferns will face off in a three-game, nineon-nine series at the 2015 Auckland Nines. The two teams contested the final of the Women’s World Cup last year and there is a real rivalry between the sides. Speaking after the announcement, NRL Football Operation Manager Nathan McGuirk said, “It is a great step forward for the whole game to give these girls an opportunity on such a big stage in front of 45,000 people on both days.” The Jillaroos are now coached by Steve Folks who is excited to be working with the girls. It is a big step up for the profile of women’s rugby league and all games are set to broadcast live on Fox Sports.
WARWICK BOWLS THE semi-finals of the club selected pairs were played on Saturday and both were entertaining games, the first was between Sue Valentine and Barry Johnstone v Alex Naylor and Doug Warr, where Barry’s team took the early points to lead 8-2, but then Doug’s team won the next four ends to take the lead - but only briefly - before Sue and Doug won the game 20-15. The second game between Chris McCosker and John Ruhle v G. Creighton and Ken Bryson went along to the 11th end with Ken’s team having a handy lead of 13-7, but then J.R. put his foot down with a couple of fours and went on to win 27-18. The two winning teams will face each other next Saturday.
