WHEN Lilydale boy Bill Phillips enlisted in the Second AIF in 1943, recognition by an organisation dedicated to war veterans was nowhere on his radar. Bill, a veteran himself of two wars and a founding member of the Mount Evelyn RSL, was presented with Life Membership of the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) on Tuesday, 16 September. It’s fair enough to call him a boy; he was only 15 when he joined his father, Jim, in defence of his country in World War II. “My dad had enlisted and I just wanted to be in it, he said, admitting that he had “might have lied about his age to get in. He served in New Guinea but was repatriated and then discharged when the military discovered his real age, then 17, after he came down with dengue fever. He said age wasn’t an issue on the ground, where he was accepted as an equal by the other soldiers. “I was pretty tough in those days, he said. “Some might have had a bit of an idea, but I could do what they could do so it was all good. He enlisted again in 1945 and at 18 became an infantry instructor serving for another three years after the war ended. When the call went out for returned servicemen to serve in the Korean War in 1950, Bill was a mature 22-year-old and he answered the call again. He said Korea was hard going and again illness saw him repatriated early. The Life Membership, presented at Mercy Place Montrose aged-care where 86-year-old Bill is a resident, acknowledges his military service, but it is primarily recognition of his contribution to the RSL and to veterans and their families in the decades that followed. Mount Evelyn RSL President, Roger Boness presented the Life Membership certificate at a gathering of Bill’s family, friends and fellow RSL members. He said there was great respect in the

Station bomb probed FORENSIC investigators are still investigating a petrol bomb attack on the Monbulk police station last week. Monbulk Sergeant Mark Knight said the Molotov cocktail was thrown through a window of the station’s garage not long after 3.20am on Tuesday morning. The station was unmanned at the time, but alarms notified police of the issue. The Mail broke the news of the attack on Tuesday morning online, and while there was no serious damage to the building or the new police car parked in the garage, police were busy investigating any leads they could find. There were clear signs of damage with a broken window surrounded by charred bricks on Tuesday. Sgt Knight said he believed those responsible for the petrol bomb attack had broken into a shed behind the Monbulk RSL and removed some chairs and used them to see over the fence surrounding the police station.

“We’re lucky that it missed the car,” he said. “The damage was minimised, but we are working hard to find the culprits.” Police are also investigating a number of events that occurred on the same night, but cannot confirm whether they are linked. They include a burglary at The Patch General Store where money was stolen and the inside ransacked. Owner Andrew Collins said he believed the thieves were looking for money and cigarettes. “Our alarm went off about 3am,” Mr Collins said. “But when I got there about 10 minutes later, they were gone.” Mr Collins said the thieves took some money from the store, all coins, and customers were finding 20 cent and 10 cent pieces along the footpath to the building. A burnt out car was also found along the Monbulk - Emerald Road and towed away for forensic examination. Anyone with information is asked to contact Yarra Ranges CIU on 9739 2300 or Monbulk police on 9756 6266.

Passion for companion animals OCTOBER is a very important month for the animal welfare community. In the first two weeks of October animal welfare organisations around the world try desperately to raise the profile of their chosen cause. At Animal Aid we champion all animals but our particular passion is for companion animals. We dedicate significant resources to offer refuge, rehabilitation and, where required, the chance of a new home to about 6000 cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, sheep, goats, pigs and

poultry each year - not to mention the odd caged bird, goldfish or reptile. We are very proud of the work that we do and with the help of the community we will continue to do the best job that we can for the animals.

There are so many wonderful animal welfare organisations out there doing incredible work for the causes that they champion. Some specialise in wildlife, some on our feathered or scaly friends, while others focus on injustice to animals in sport and entertainment or medical science. All are worthy causes that deserve your attention. Some people think that animal welfare people can be a bit extreme, and some can be, but please don’t put them

all in the radical basket and close your mind to them. If you take the time to listen to what they have say or read their literature you just might learn something that you didn’t know before. At the end of the day you may not ultimately share their views, but with the new information you have garnered, it might help you make a more ethical decision in the supermarket or the pet shop. You may chose to celebrate World Animal Day, Be Kind to Animals

Week or attend one of the many events being run by passionate organisations or perhaps even run one yourself. Do your bit to show that you would like to live in a more compassionate world. Animal Aid will be attending the Animals Matter to Me Rally on Saturday 4 October at the Treasury Gardens in Melbourne. We encourage you to come along and show that you share our concern for animals in need.

Tree plea: charity overflows ONE hug said it all. Sassafras partners Ross Skiffington and Gordon Arney faced going into serious debt before Emerald business owner Matt Slockwitch intervened two weeks ago. Mr Arney bought his Sassafras property more than 40 years ago, and it is surrounded by enormous pine trees, three of which Yarra Ranges Council ordered be removed by the start of July. Quotes for removal costs ranged from $7150 to $15,000-plus, which would be difficult for anyone to come up with in a short period of time - let alone in Mr Arney’s and Mr Skiffington’s situation. Mr Arney, 72, suffered a stroke four years ago that left him with dysphasia, a condition that severely affects speech and comprehension. Mr Skiffington is his partner’s fulltime carer and power of attorney and they earn a combined $800 a week on a carer’s allowance and disability pension. Council granted an extension to this month due to their circumstances, but they were no closer to figuring out how to pay. A public plea for help through the Mail reached Mr Slockwitch, who runs Cut and Catch Tree Service, and began several extraordinary acts of generosity from him and fellow local business owners. Mr Slockwitch and co cut all three pine trees down on Friday and returned today (Tuesday) to complete the job - without Mr Arney or Mr Slockwitch having to pay a cent. “I’m extremely grateful to Matt and his team,” Mr Skiffington said. “I’m gobsmacked by the generosity of these guys, offering their equipment, time and expertise. “They were all very happy to come

and do it and Matt organised it all. He was really the livewire and so generous in spirit.” Mr Skiffington, an internationallyrenowned magician before Mr Arney’s stroke, gathered everyone together after more than eight hours of work to thank them and offer to do a magic show in return. Mr Slockwitch was similarly overwhelmed at the response to his request for help in the past two weeks. “I’m pretty proud of the team, especially Troy (Johnson) from Downright Tree Solutions,” Mr Slockwitch said. “The team’s put in a massive effort and they’ve done a fantastic job and it feels good to walk away and know the place is finally safe. “I couldn’t have done it without the team, and it’s a great feeling to know I have a lot of friends in the industry who were willing to help out.” Other businesses involved were BOOM Sherrin Hire, McDougall Brothers Tree Lopping Service, Cheaper Bin Hire, Crane Truck Hire Emerald, Remo’s Hedging and CJ Performance Building. SP Ausnet also assisted with the process. Mr Skiffington said he had not heard from council in recent weeks despite multiple efforts to make contact. “The council hasn’t been of any assistance. They’ve just been badgering me,” he said. “They’re probably grateful these chaps have pulled together and saved them some work, because they would have charged top dollar and put it against our rates. “That’s the only way we would have afforded it, so that when Gordon died it would then be paid off.” Mr Arney was in respite care this week and last while the work was completed.

Ross Skiffington (back row, middle) was hugely appreciative of the help of Matt Slockwitch (back row, third from left) and fellow local business owners for the removal of three pine trees at his Sassafras home. Pictures: MARC McGOWAN

IT would appear that the local Liberal Party pre-selection panel has finally selected a candidate worth voting for. Mark Verschuur has built a successful medical supplies manufacturing business which now employs around 90 people. Verschuur, unlike some other politicians in this area is capable of stringing a sentence together and can certainly articulate a considered point of view. Most importantly, Verschuur knows what he actually stands for and believes in. I sincerely hope Verschuur is elected to the seat of Monbulk in the upcoming November state election. He may even be able to assist our local federal member to become a politician of substance. Mark’s opposition is little Jimmy Merlino, the professional politician who has never held a job outside politics. I will note that the munchkin like Merlino does claim to have worked as an assistant part-time brick layer during his university days. Jimmy must have been using lightweight bricks. I strongly believe 'professional’ politicians struggle to understand what life is like for ordinary people. If you haven’t held a real job how can you possibly represent and understand the concerns of real people? We have a simple choice to make between a successful business person and a career politician. Wouldn’t it be great to see Jimmy out looking for a job in November like the rest of us have always had to do. Sean Gothe, Belgrave.

The true TAFE I READ with some interest the inflammatory comments made by the Independent Candidate for Evelyn Anthony McAleer (Letters, Tuesday September 16).

In referring to the Auditor-General’s report, Mr McAleer has either failed to realise or understand that it was the former Brumby Labor Government that opened up the TAFE sector to competition from the private sector in 2008 with no support. Under the Napthine Coalition, a $200 million structural adjustment fund was created to help TAFEs innovate and adjust to the open market system introduced by the Labor Opposition. The decision to close the Lilydale campus was made by Swinburne University. Under Labor in 2010 legislation was changed that has in essence meant Swinburne could close the campus at Lilydale. It seems that Mr McAleer has joined the Opposition in talking down Victoria’s training system at every opportunity. Between 2010 and 2013, enrolments in the Eastern Metropolitan region increased by 13.3 per cent. Some 72 per cent of Victorians are now training in areas of economic value and employment growth – more than ever before. Perhaps Mr McAleer would also be interested to know that the government is investing a record $1.2 billion per year in the TAFE and training system, an increase of almost 50 per cent on Labor’s last budget in 2010. Christine Fyffe MP, Member for Evelyn.

Trophies canned I WOULD like to introduce For the Love of Wildlife, a local grassroots non-profit organisation that has been working quietly, yet tirelessly with Jason Wood, Liberal Member for La Trobe, in getting the Australian Government to take a stand against the cruel and hideous industry of canned hunting by tightening regulation around the importation of hunted animal trophies into Australia. We are now seeing a ripple effect with other countries following Australia’s lead. We are connected globally to amaz-

ing individuals with incredible initiatives and while we support all endeavours to release wildlife from suffering, our main project at the moment is fund-raising for a documentary currently in postproduction. It's a 15 years in the making story that highlights the underhanded, cruel world of 'canned hunting’ in Africa. Many young Australians get caught up in this practice by being lured to gap year 'Volunteer Projects’ where they unwittingly help humanise and hand-rear lion cubs which end up being offered to rich hunters to be killed while caged, drugged and unafraid of humans. Factory farming of wildlife. We have organised a fund-raiser on 4 October, World Animal Day. We have International Guest Speaker and Conservationist Ian Michler, who is researcher and a lead character in the upcoming documentary who will be in Australia in consultation with the Environment Minister, Greg Hunt. It's a unique opportunity to hear Ian’s direct experience with African wildlife and the critical challenges it’s facing. The night will be hosted by Stephen Snelleman, ABC presenter and producer who will introduce Judi Connelli (AM) who has appeared in lead roles such as Fiddler on the Roof, The Merry Widow, and Sweeney Todd ... to name a few. Also Suzanne Johnston who has been principal artist for Opera Australia for many years, performed at Salzburg and Covent Garden and Peter Hurley, international judge and much loved and admired musician. Compost happens on garbage trucks YARRA Ranges Council’s waste fleet has been given a freshen up with new look trucks and an expanded recycling service. The new trucks have just hit the streets in some areas and will be in full operation on 1 October. They boast new slogans and colours that co-ordinate with the colours of the rubbish bin lids. Mayor Fiona McAllister said the colour co-ordination would help residents identify which trucks had collected in their neighbourhood. The yellow trucks will collect recycling, light green for greenwaste and dark green for rubbish. “The trucks also have GPS tracking so we know where they have collected, which enables us to help residents who may call up with inquiries about their collection,” she said.

The trucks also have slogans written on their side as part of an education campaign. “Compost happens” is the message on the green waste truck, “Planning a comeback” for recyclables and “Such a waste” for the rubbish truck. As part of the new service, from 1 October residents can recycle pots and pans and plastic bags, as long as they are placed within a single bag and knotted. Residents should have now received their waste calendar and their three-year waste service guide which is full of information, hints and tips. Find out more about waste collection in different areas via the council’s My Neighbourhood online feature www.yarraranges.vic.gov. au/myneighbourhood.

Olinda wants its pool back By MARC McGOWAN THE Yarra Ranges Council survey designed to gather feedback on the dormant Olinda Pool drew multiple angry posts on council’s Facebook page last week. Yarra Ranges Council shut the pool in November last year due to the discovery of irreparable cracks, as well as low attendance rates. The five-step survey is open until 10 October and follows council’s Aquatic Strategic Plan, which states the Olinda Pool “is unlikely to remain viable” for a variety of reasons. Survey respondents are asked to tick one of five boxes ranging from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree” and add a comment in reply to five themes about the pool. The council is keen to maintain the pool as a source of firefighting water for Olinda CFA and the fourth theme in the survey suggests it could be a good area to use as a “retreat” in a bushfire emergency. The figures - both likely attendance and restoration costs - stated in the survey’s final theme caused the greatest community angst. The survey suggests the minimum restoration cost would be $750,000 and the community could expect about 20 pool users per day in the 12-week summer season. Save the Olinda Pool chairman John Faull, who helped fund-raise for the pool’s construction

50 years ago, said any usage estimations were inaccurate, given the lack of attention in this area in the past. “I’ve seen times there when you can’t get a car park and the accusations of the usage are totally incorrect,” Mr Faull said. “We know, on many occasions, the gate is never manned, so people were getting in without charge.” Mr Faull also said not enough people were aware the survey even existed. The Aquatic Strategic Plan states immediate works to bring the pool to “a safe standard” would cost $80,000 then a further $150,000 for improvements across the next decade. “They’re suggesting they want a far bigger, grandiose scenario at the Olinda Pool site. “We’re not saying we’re not happy with it, but ... we want to maintain our swimming pool, along with whatever council wants to do.” Mr Faull hoped the Save the Olinda Pool group would be able to assist with council’s desire to make greater use of the area, including hosting open-air film nights, markets and the writers’ festival. He said the lack of youth activities in Olinda made the availability of the pool all the more important. Streeton Ward councillor Noel Cliff said Olinda residents had a “terrific case”, but needed to

John Faull wants the pool to open this summer. Picture: ROB CAREW justify their stance in large numbers. “In light of the pool strategy, they’re going to have to work very hard to get council to reinstate it,” Cr Cliff said. “It won’t be easy, but ... they’ve got a sporting chance. If they’re to stand a chance in hell of getting this thing reinstated, they have to show there

No relief in constant struggle against housing stress nightly Newstart allowance of $520, with $160 of that going towards rent. Mr Hughes said he was left with about $100 a fortnight after rent, groceries and bills, but did not have his driver’s licence or own a car, because he couldn’t afford the costs involved. That scenario makes it tough for him to gain employment. “A couple of employers I have rung back have said not having my licence was the main issue against me.

“I’m basically looking up and down the train line for suitable employment, but there’s not much out there.” Mr Hughes has not had a paid job since 2000. He volunteers with Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service and has previously done so with Knoxbrooke, which provides support services for people with a disability. He started a community services certificate through the Salvation Army, but the 26-week course was reduced to 12

and he needs to wait for a new course to begin to complete the certificate. “I’ve actually been in similar situations to a lot of the clients we have come through the door,” he said. “I’ve had my own substance (abuse) issues and have been homeless - you name it, I’ve done it.” Mr Hughes spent more than six months sleeping in a rolled-up section of carpet behind an Indian restaurant in South Melbourne as a 12-year-old.

He washed dishes and performed other restaurant duties to remain there. Mr Hughes reconciled with his parents and spent the next six months living at the family’s holiday home in the Mornington Peninsula. Department of Human Services statistics in March this year showed only 0.4 per cent of one-bedroom rentals and 12.1 per cent of three-bedroom rentals were affordable in metropolitan Melbourne. –Marc McGowan

MICAH Hughes is one of the self-confessed “reasonably lucky” ones. A Tenants Union of Victoria study still categorises the Upwey-raised man as a low-income earner who suffers from “housing stress”, in that he spends more than 30 per cent of his income on rent. Mr Hughes, 34, rents a Box Hill home alongside a friend, whose girlfriend’s mother owns it, after years of bouncing between friends’ places and his parents’ home. He receives a fort-

Cars take over town By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM YOU don’t often see 380 cars and bikes parked in downtown Monbulk for nine hours, but that’s exactly what drew over 2000 people to Main Street last Sunday. Owners of cars and bikes of all different eras, makes and colours gathered in Monbulk on Sunday for the second annual Monbulk Classic Car and Bike Show, hosted by the Monbulk Business Network. President John Coleman said the show had an excellent turnout and raised much-needed funds to buy a defibrillator for the Monbulk CFA. “The weather was excellent and visitors said they saw cars here that

they haven’t seen at any of the bigger events. “People came from all over Melbourne to show their cars and the community really responded.” Cars and bikes filled the main street from 7am-4pm and visitors were asked for a gold coin donation, while exhibitors contributed $5 each. The Monbulk Business Network hopes to see even more cars and bigger crowds when the event is hosted again next year. “It’s great to be able to hold these kinds of events to help the community. The day was definitely a success.”

The Monbulk Classic Car and Bike Show took over Monbulk's Main Street.

It’s two shows with a difference By MARC McGOWAN TWO favourites with “completely different music styles” are returning to Ranges Concert Lounge on back-to-back nights this month to entertain local audiences. Folk and blues singer Jenny Biddle, along with Kelly Breuer, and impersonator extraordinaire Dave Gouldson will perform at the popular venue on 26 and 27 September, respectively. Ranges Concert Lounge publicity manager Tracey Roberts said concert-goers were in for a treat. “We’ve had them a couple of times and they’re both well-established artists in their fields and they’ve always been very popular,” Roberts said. “We pride ourselves on providing a really good quality night out and high-quality musical performance by professional musicians with great sound and lighting. “It’s a lovely atmosphere at

Burrinja Cafe (where Ranges Concert Lounge is located), with good food, so you can book a table for dinner and a show and it’s really good value.” Biddle is back from a United Kingdom tour and now touring the east coast of Australia with Breuer, who performs under the name Brouhaha. “Jenny is a really intoxicating and mesmerising performer who’s got a really wonderful, dynamic vocal range and is also quite a master of the guitar,” Roberts said. “She’s a consummate professional and one of these relatively young performers with a wise head on her shoulders.” Adelaide folk musician Breuer travelled the east coast extensively in 2012 and 2013 and has supported the likes of Clare Bowditch, Mia Dyson, Liz Stringer, Sarah McLeod, Jen Cloher and Wes Carr. Dave Gouldson will present his Las Vegas Legends show, with

Picture: CONTRIBUTED songs including Release me, The Last Waltz, Quando, Cherry Cherry, Cracklin’ Rosie, Delilah, Kiss, and Green Green Grass of Home. “Dave is well-known in the

cabaret musical theatre world and his voice is something to behold,” Roberts said. “It’s really deep and low and one of those amazing tenor/baritone vocals. He’s a consummate performer and very entertaining. “He’s quite a hit with the ladies and he comes and sits on their knee and does all that stuff. It’s really great and good fun. It’s quite tongue in cheek, but delivered very professionally.” Tickets to see Biddle and Breuer cost $15 for adults and the concert starts at 8pm on Friday, 26 September. Children under 12 gain free entry. Tickets for Gouldson’s Las Vegas Legends show on Saturday, 27 September are $20. Music begins from 8pm. Ranges Concert Lounge is at the Burrinja Cafe, 351 Glenfern Rd, Upwey. Phone 9754 5707 to book a table.

Big acts set HEADLINE musical acts Diesel, Frank Yamma and Archie Roach are booked to play at Belgrave’s Sooki Lounge in the next three months. Sooki Lounge, which has been open for about 11 months, hosts four gigs every week, but Diesel, Yamma and Roach are the star attractions for the rest of the year. Diesel ($30 pre-sale), a solo artist these days, is performing his Diesel Lit Up - The Singles ’89’14 show on 16 October. The show is a compilation of the award-winning singer’s 30 singles across 13 albums. Indigenous songwriters Yamma (13 November, $20 pre-sale) and Roach (11 December, $30 pre-sale) are highly acclaimed for the way they express their individual experiences through song. Yamma, whose album Countryman drew praise in Australia, the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe, is also an exceptional guitarist. His music tells “brutally honest” tales of alcohol abuse, cultural degradation, respect for the old law and the importance of country. The tone of Roach’s performances has changed since he tragically lost his partner, Ruby Hunter, four years ago. Sooki Lounge has a free range and organic, Spanish-style menu with a bar and local art on display. It is open Tuesday to Thursday from 5pm to late, Friday and Saturday from noon to 3am, and Sundays noon to late. You can phone Sooki Lounge on 9754 7567.

Celebration of a healthy harvest By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM A CELEBRATION of healthy, local living was held last Saturday at Sarah Court Preschool’s Healthy Harvest Festival. The Montrose community was joined by local traders and primary schools to inspire residents of all ages to buy locally, grow edible food and learn ways to prepare fresh, healthy meals. Councillor Len Cox opened the event by planting a passionfruit vine in the kinder’s vegetable garden. Sarah Court Preschool President Kate Garnsworthy declared the day a success and said the kinder planned to host a similar event next year. “We were absolutely delighted with the level of support we received from the community to put on the Healthy Harvest Festival. “Four of our local primary schools attended to offer free health-related activities, Milo Cricket and Kelly Mini Sports ran activities in the reserve, our kinder families donated their backyard vegetables and worm wee to sell on the day, and there were fantastic horticulture demonstrations and live music on our main stage.” The date for next year’s Healthy Harvest Festival will be announced in October. Details about the event, as well as delicious recipe ideas and growing tips can be found at www.healthyharvestfestival. com.

Councillor Len Cox officially opening the event and planted a passionfruit vine with the preschool children.

MELBOURNE Fringe Festival 2014 has a new addition in the form of local funny girl Holly Bohmer. Coming from the suburbs of Melbourne, Ms Bohmer says she’s excited to get her foot in the door of the Melbourne arts scene. “It feels like a little fish, big pond transition for me. Having been involved in the hills art scene, the Melbourne Fringe Festival felt like a natural step forward,” Ms Bohmer said. A Kallista resident, Ms Bohmer is part of emerging local comedy group Toot Sweet Productions. The group will be performing at this year’s Melbourne Fringe Festival with their show ‘The Ultimate’. “It was crazy when we first decided what we wanted to do,” Ms Bohmer said. Ms Bohmer wrote the comedy with four university friends: Justine Cammerino, Amanda Goode, Emily Goode and James Goode. These friends would later become the comedy group Toot Sweet Production. Ms Bohmer said the performance was inspired by The Real Housewives of Melbourne and wide array of other reality TV shows on “the most banal things”. “It’s the ultimate satire of reality TV,” Ms Bohmer said. She said she was interested by the way reality television exploited so many people. “They deliberately look for people who are going to be volatile and struggle,” Ms Bohmer said. The aspiring actor/writer/artist said the play was funny but would make people think.

Time to speed up the fun Slices SCHOOL holidays are set to speed up a notch with Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit’s new European SODI RT8 karts, fully commissioned and ready for racing. Since arriving at the circuit from France in mid-August, the 27 new karts worth more than $230,000, have been given a total shakedown and tested on the kart circuit. They’ve even been revved up for racing, with a shiny coat of red paint and Phillip Island circuit logos. Karting at Phillip Island on the 760-metre karting circuit, a replica of Australia’s world-famous Grand Prix race track, is super fun for anyone. “You can be a novice, you can be a child, or you can be an adrenalin junkie,” said Fergus Cameron, circuit managing director. “We manage the experience to cater for everybody, no matter what their skill is behind a wheel.” With each session of 10 minutes, karters take on the clock and one another. Once across the finish line, times are immediately posted to monitors and a lap chart is provided to all karters. If you opt to, your time and photo will be immediately posted to your Facebook or twitter feed, allowing you maximum boasting rights with your mates. A maximum of 24 karts are on track at any one time, and if you bring a tribe of karters, you can race each other in a group battle. “There’s no need to book in advance,” Mr Cameron said.

Race ready, the new European SODI Karts at Phillip Island. 127666 “It’s a very streamlined process and people just flow through for the 10-minute sessions.” On arrival, karters are given a thorough induction in safety and race-craft, don a race helmet and are buckled into race seats. Competitors can even have their photo taken prior to their heat, and if they score a top three spot, they’ll cross the finish line to see their happy faces featured on the winner’s podium on the television monitors.

“We want to bring the action and adrenalin from the racetrack to our karting experience. People love trying to beat their times and seeing an immediate result fires everyone up for an even better performance next time,” Mr Cameron said. Fired by a 9hp GX270 Honda engine, the SODI karts feature allround rubber protection, a structurally engineered rollbar and seatbelt. Seats and pedals are adjustable making it easier to custom-fit driv-

ers, and allow for a reduced driver height so most 12-year-olds will be able to kart. For youngsters that are under 12 or don’t make the height restriction, the circuit has retained their tandem karts so they can kart with an adult. Karting sessions are priced in 10-minute blocks with one session at $35, two sessions x 10 minutes at $60; and three sessions for $80.

LOSE yourself in your own piece of paradise at the Waterfront Retreat at Wattle Point. Located on the waterfront of the Gippsland Lakes over 20 acres, visitors can stay in one of 19 lodges. Visitors can choose one to four bedroom lodges overlooking water or breathtaking bush views. There are plenty of activities available at the retreat to experience some of the best of East Gippsland. Swim in the indoor solar heated pool, relax in the luxurious outdoor mineral spa, enjoy a game of tennis or explore the lakes and the bush with pushbikes; canoes and kayaks are also available. You could simply sit on your verandah and enjoy the beauty of the natural flora and fauna, watching the mood changes of the lake while sipping a glass of local wine. Kangaroos live at the retreat and greet you every morning when you open your curtains to enjoy the morning light peering over the lake or bush. Dolphins are often seen on the lake, feeding or playing in the water. The conference centre caters for up to 100 people for conferences, weddings, functions, and even craft weekend getaways. They can cater for you or you can organise your own catering. The conference centre is surrounded by bush and with its many windows creates a very relaxing atmosphere.

Belgrave takes control

Belgrave defeated Wandin by eight points in the A Grade grand final.

YVMDFNL NETBALL A GRADE Belgrave 50 d Wandin 42 ALTHOUGH eight goals is not a huge margin, make no mistake that Belgrave was in control for the majority of this game. It jumped out to a five-goal quartertime lead and then really strutted its stuff in the second term as its ball movement was too quick for Wandin to combat. Belgrave scored 16 goals to eight for the term and grabbed a very handy 13goal half-time lead. The second half was a good battle and Wandin gave it everything to get back into the match, scoring 13 goals to 10 in the third and still had a slight sniff going into the last quarter trailing by 10 goals. The final quarter was another good clash but Wandin just couldn’t eat into Belgrave’s lead to pose any real threat. Belgrave was good enough to fend off any challenge as it came away with a great grand final victory. Best Belgrave: Carmen Timms (BOC medal and 26 goals), Danielle Weisgerber, Angela Jeffrey. Wandin: Nikki Phillips, Tayissa Coppinger, Melissa Martinov (27). A RESERVE Wandin 41 d Mount Evelyn 38 WANDIN has become 2014 Premiers after a three goal victory over Mount Evelyn in what was a fantastic grand final. This game had everything and was

still in the balance deep into the last quarter. Wandin seemed to settle earlier than its opponents and got out to a four goal lead at the first change but Mount Evelyn got its game up and going in the second term scoring 14 goals to nine for Wandin to lead by just one goal at halftime. The third term went goal-for-goal in what was a high quality quarter. It was 10 goals apiece and Wandin’s lead remained at one goal at the last change. The final quarter was another ripper but it was Wandin that got a small buffer and, although Mount Evelyn tried its utmost to get over the line, Wandin showed great experience late to hold on to its lead and win by three goals to become worthy 2014 Premiers. Best Wandin: Lauren Fletcher (31), Melissa Berry, Brogan Badrock. Mount Evelyn: Victoria Starling (BOC medal), Christa Vagg (22), Susan Livesey. B GRADE Wandin 20 d Olinda Ferny Creek 19 THIS was a grandstand finish to a great grand final that Wandin held on to win by the smallest of margins. Wandin did look to be the better side throughout the first three quarters and it seemed it was going to run away with the win as it went into three-quarter time with a handy six-goal buffer. Olinda threw caution to the wind in the last and all of a sudden it was finishing with a flourish and Wandin had to defend like crazy.

Olinda scored eight last quarter goals but Wandin did manage to send three through the ring which was enough to give it a one goal lead that it was able to maintain to become the 2014 Premiers. Best Wandin: Danielle Smith (BOC medal), Rachael Roberts, Georgia Cunningham (11). Olinda Ferny Creek: Kim Shaw, Caitlin Portarianos (13), Lucy Allman. B RESERVE Olinda Ferny Creek 27 d Wandin 25 OLINDA has become 2014 Premiers after holding off a determined Wandin side to win by two goals. Olinda was scoring very well early with some great forward thrusts in the first half and got out to a seven goal halftime lead. Wandin turned the game around in the third quarter as it tightened its defence and created scoring opportunities on the rebound. It scored nine goals to four and all of the sudden Olinda’s lead was cut to just two goals going into the last quarter. The last term was a classic contest with both sides giving it everything. It went goal-for-goal but in the end it was Olinda that was able to maintain their lead and walk off the court Premiership winners. Best Olinda Ferny Creek: Nicole Millwood (BOC medal and 23 goals), Romy Schauble, Emily Groszek. Wandin: Kate Checkley, Alicia Kay (15), Gayle Seeger.

Olinda Ferny Creek defeated Wandin by two points in the B-Reserve Grand Final.

Woori’s complete three-peat THE 2014 Yarra Valley Mountain District ‘Community Bank’ Football Netball League season has been run and won. Time to celebrate, commiserate, relax and for some to hang up the boots. Woori Yallock made it three in a row and Belgrave broke through for an impressive A Grade netball victory. Yarra Glen took out both Seniors and A Grade netball. Finals footy and netball is a different game and winners proved hard to pick. Congratulations to all presidents on an outstanding year and make the most of the summer break - the 2015 season is only a heartbeat away.

GRAND FINALS SENIORS Woori Yallock 10.13 (73) d Wandin 9.5 (59) THE three-peat is complete as Woori Yallock triumphed by 14 points over Wandin in the grand final to make three premiership victories in a row. The game started off with both sides hitting in hard and making a few mistakes under relentless pressure. Goals were hard to come by and both sides booted two majors in the opening term but it was Woori that went to the break with a narrow three-point lead. The second quarter was similar and Woori seemed to get more of the ball but wasted its chances and went into halftime trailing by one point with a score of 4.5 (29) while Wandin was more efficient booting 5.0 (30). The game started to open up in the third as Woori started using the wide open spaces of Healesville’s ground to good effect, opening up its forward line and finding more avenues to goal while Wandin struggled to get it past the halfway mark of the ground. Woori booted 5.3 to one goal in the third quarter to go into the last change with a very handy 26 point lead. The last quarter had everything. Woori had its chances to ice the game but peppered the goals while Wandin finished strong, booting 3.5 for the quarter. Although Woori only scored one major, it was its strong third quarter performance that set up the win and Wandin just couldn’t overcome what was a match winning lead.

Best Woori Yallock: B. Sneddon (BOG medal and three goals), B. Monkhorst (4), J. Matthews (2). Wandin: K. Talevski (5), R. Ross, H. Dudink.

RESERVES Upwey Tecoma 7.11 (53) d Belgrave 6.6 (42) THIS was a very scratchy match with neither team able to get any real run going due to the immense pressure put on the ball carrier. Belgrave held a four point lead at quarter time but could have been further ahead because they had four more scoring opportunities. The second term was a real battle with neither side’s forward entries being re-

Both sides booted just one major for the term and Belgrave led by just three points at the main break. The third quarter was more of the same as the pressure remained, but Upwey did start to find more of the ball. However, it couldn’t make it count on the scoreboard as it booted 2.6 for the term while Belgrave kicked two straight. It was Upwey that held the lead going into the last break by three points. Upwey’s last quarter was pretty good, it certainly didn’t blow Belgrave away but it did have more of the ball and was able to control the tempo when required. It booted 2.2 to one goal for the term and although it wasn’t a big scoring quarter, it didn’t worry Upwey because it was enough to secure the 2014 Premiership.

Best Upwey Tecoma: K. O’Brien (BOG medal and one goal), K. Hinton, R. Van Hoorn. Belgrave: E. Doulgeris, M. Johnson (1), J. Latto. UNDER 18 Healesville 9.7 (61) d Olinda Ferny Creek 3.12 (30) HEALESVILLE has completed the perfect season after winning the grand final by 31 points and not suffering one defeat for

the entire year. Although Healesville won by a comfortable margin, it took until the second half to shake off Olinda with neither side playing to their potential in the first half. Olinda led by one point at the first change and there wasn’t a goal scored in the entire second quarter as Olinda went into half-time with a three point lead. Healesville was able to break the game open in the third as its running ability came to the fore. The team shared the ball well and had Olinda chasing. Healesville booted four goals for the quarter and held Olinda scoreless going into the three-quarter time break with a 20-point lead. The last quarter saw Healesville in control and, as hard as Olinda may have tried, it wasn’t going to be good enough as Healesville had all the answers. It booted three last-quarter goals to one to win in style and top off a remarkable season.

Upwey Tecoma celebrates its win over Belgrave in the Division One Reserves Premiership.

Best Healesville: B. Clark (BOG medal), J. Savage, S. Fisher. Olinda Ferny Creek: L. Taylor (2), E. Greenall, C. Horner.

Healesville defeated Olinda Ferny Creek in the U18 grand final.
