ALL Pakenham firefighters would be trained to provide CPR in emergency situations under a State Opposition plan if elected on 29 November. The Pakenham Fire Station would be granted Emergency Medical Response powers following limited trials in some CFA stations including Cranbourne and Dandenong. EMR, which would be installed at all intergrated CFA stations, would dispatch firefighters at the same time as paramedics to attend cardiac arrests and non-breathing patients. The Opposition has also promised to fund specialist training so all Pakenham firefighters can provide basic life support and give CPR. Pakenham fire brigade Operations Officer Jim Dore said about a third of their volunteers were already EMR trained, having come from other brigades where training was available. “It (EMR) would be enthusiastically received,” he said. “We’d be more than happy to get the training. “Nearly all our volunteers have level two first aid training, so it’s an extra two days training. “(EMR) Trials (including in Cranbourne and Dandenong) were funded by the Department of Health, so there’s no money for it at this stage.” Defbrillators would also be installed on all fire trucks however Mr Dore said their three major appliances were already fitted out following fund-raising efforts from volunteers. “We got them about six months ago. They all cost approximately $1300 each,” he said. “Many volunteer brigades across the Cardinia Group have them too,” he said. Labor candidate for Bass Sanjay Nathan said EMR would help save lives. “Across Pakenham and Cardinia, Labor’s emergency response plan will be a lifeline for locals,” he said. EMR training is currently limited to Metropolitan Fire Brigade firefighters where the rollout has reduced response times to certain incidents like cardiac arrest by over a minute.

THE relocation of Officer’s War Memorial Gates will be delivered in time for Anzac Day amid concerns from residents. General manager Planning and Development Phil Walton said the gates would be relocated by March, at a Cardinia Shire Council meeting last Monday night. The area is expected to host Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services each year. Ranges Ward Councillor Brett Owen said there had been concerns that the relocation would not be delivered on time. “It has been a concern of a number of residents that it may not be achieved,” he said. Cardinia Shire Council announced in June the gates would be moved to a new forecourt at the Officer Recreation Reserve, however tenders have not gone out yet. Mr Walton expected tenders go out for the forecourt work in the next couple of months. The forecourt is expected to give the gates more prominence at the reserve, around 30 metres behind the current site. Cardinia Shire mayor Graeme Moore said the gates relocation said local schools would be invited to take part in the ceremonies and had been asked to include the gates in school activities and history lessons. 1153138-FA39-14

A MAJOR fund-raising event for one of the region’s biggest charitable organisations is fast approaching. The Casey-Cardinia Foundation will host its annual charity dinner on Friday 3 October with well-known entertainer Mark Andrew sure to be a hit. The question is, though, who will Andrew appear as this time? Will he bring the house down as Elvis or come as the always groovy Austin Powers? Or maybe Dean Martin or Tom Jones will jon in the fun. The annual dinner and auction raises vital funds which enable the foundation to assist with social, community and general welfare needs in Casey and Cardinia. A memorable night of entertainment is guaranteed with food, wine and great company. MC Sandy Roberts is also sure to be a hit with the auction led by Andrew Facey that will feature a number of exciting items including holidays, dinner parties and experience. There will also be a wide selection of silent auction items, raffles and prizes. The foundation was first established in 2003 to fill a hole in the community which demanded a need for a philanthropic structure in the region. Last year, chairman Brian Paynter announced that the group broadened its region to include the City of Casey. Funds are dispersed in the way of grants which help provide support to charitable organisations that support various community groups. A total of $333,0000 has been allocated to local groups over the past 10

Concern over drug listing By LACHLAN MOORHEAD BAD blood has developed between the Federal Government and a pharmaceutical company over subsidies for a lifesaving drug. It comes after the News reported in March on concerned mother Linda Van de Loop who was championing for the government to place the drug, Soliris, on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). Ms Van de Loop’s nine-year-old daughter, Holly, previously suffered from atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome (aHUS) in 2012, a rare blood disease for which Soliris is the most effective treatment. Months of negotiations between the government and Alexion have followed a Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) recommendation in April that Soliris be subsidised. Without subsidisation Soliris is estimated to cost Australian patients roughly $500,000 a year. But Alexion Pharmaceuticals on Friday slammed the Federal Government for wanting to proceed with a PBAC recommendation that it believed would see patients who are given subsidised access to Soliris made to mandatorily discontinue the treatment after one year. In a statement on Friday, Alexion Australasia managing director David Kwasha slammed the current listing recommendation and said the pharmaceutical company wanted a resolution in which patients would receive sustained access to reimbursed Soliris. He said the decision as to whether treatment should be continued after 12 months should be left to the treating physician who has expertise in aHUS, not the government. “Alexion has repeatedly agreed to supply Soliris immediately and to-
Linda Van de Loop, here with her daughter Holly, is still calling for life-saving drug Soliris to be subsidised by Picture: ROB CAREW the government. 115849 day reiterates its agreement to supply Soliris immediately if the government agrees to either humane treatment conditions for patients or allows physicians to determine their aHUS patients’ medical needs,” Mr Kwasha said on Friday. “While the government continues to insist that all patients stop therapy as a cost-savings measure, Alexion continues to offer substantial cost-
containment and budget management measures as long as the Australian Government agrees to either institute humane conditions or leave these critical treatment decisions to the physician and patient. “Alexion firmly believes that Australians with aHUS deserve a longterm solution that is based on sound medical evidence, not budget savings.” PBAC Associate Professor Suzanne
Hill hit back at Alexion’s claims on Friday. “We have not recommended that all patients must stop receiving treatment after 12 months,” Ms Hill said. “Atypical HUS is a severe and in some patients life-threatening disease. “However, it is not a single disease. There are a mix of causes and the scientists studying this disease still do not fully understand it.
“Treatment with Soliris works in some patients - but in some patients it does not.” Ms Hill said PBAC has recommended patients be reviewed after six months of Soliris treatment, then again at 12 months. “If a patient is responding well but does not have the disease fully under control, they will continue to receive subsidised treatment as long as it is needed to maintain their health and as long as they continue to improve,” she said. “However, if the tests show that a patient has achieved remission of the disease, based on criteria developed with experts in this field, the PBAC has advised that the treatment should stop and the patient’s condition monitored. “This is good standard clinical practice. You do not give people drugs unless you absolutely have to as all drugs have side effects.” “If at any time that standard clinical monitoring shows the slightest reduction in health and therefore a patient is starting to relapse, even just an abnormal blood test, then the PBAC has recommended that the patient be reinitiated on treatment immediately, under simplified criteria.” Ms Van de Loop said in her daughter’s case, whose aHUS is in remission, a 12-month treatment would be appropriate. But she believed a patient’s doctor should still have the final say. “I know some people need it for the rest of their lives to survive but in Holly’s case 12 months would be OK because it’s in remission,” she said. “Just get it through so if people need it they can have it. “Holly doesn’t currently have active aHUS in her system but if it does come back we want access to the Soliris.”

Street gunman By BRIDGET SCOTT A WOMAN and young child were inside a Cranbourne home when a shot was allegedly fired during an altercation last Monday. The incident at the Tucker Street home resulted in the arrest of two men, who were nabbed by police in the carpark of Cranbourne McDonald’s a short time after the shot was fired. It is alleged that a 39-year-
old man from Craigieburn attended the house with a longarm weapon at around 11am on Monday, before struggling with the male occupant of the house. The gun, which was later recovered by police, was then believed to have been discharged, before the men left the house in separate cars. Both men sustained minor injuries in the altercation, although the woman and child were unscathed. Victoria Police Ballistics
Theft offences arrest A MAN was arrested in Pakenham last week after a spate of thefts across Casey. It’s believed the man, arrested last Tuesday 9 September, committed a series of offences including the theft of motor vehicles and theft from vehicles. During their investigation police recovered two stolen cars, a stolen motorcycle, a stolen trailer, stolen tools and vehicle parts. The man was remanded in custody to appear in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www. crimestoppers.com.au.

Unit attended the scene. The 39-year-old Craigieburn man, who was arrested at gunpoint in the carpark, was remanded in custody to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning. The other man was released pending further investigation. Police would like any witnesses to the incident in Tucker Street to come forward and phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
THE Endeavour Hills terrorism suspect shot dead by police on Tuesday was allegedly waving an Islamic State flag outside Dandenong Plaza Shopping Centre last week. The 18-year-old man was shot outside the Endeavour Hills police station around 7.45pm on Tuesday night, after he allegedly stabbed a Victoria Police officer and an Australian Federal Police member. Media reports indicate authorities have identified the man as Numan Haider, of Endeavour Hills. It’s believed the man had been brandishing a flag outside Dandenong Plaza Shopping Centre in the lead-up to the shooting, and Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay said it appeared to be an ISIS flag. The man’s passport was suspended roughly a week ago, according to police. Mr Lay said police first became aware of the youth about three months ago, when he came into contact with Victoria Police. “It’s true to say, late last week, we learned of some behaviours that were causing us significant concern and our interest was greatly heightened,” Mr Lay said. “And in response to that, there was a request made for the deceased to come and have a chat to the JCTT people and what we saw last night was a result of that request.” A spokesperson for Dandenong Plaza confirmed that police had contacted the shopping centre’s management with a

It’s understood the 18-yearold met the two police officers outside the police station before stabbing them. The AFP officer underwent surgery on Tuesday night in relation to wounds to his abdomen, neck, stomach and head. The Victorian officer sustained cuts to his arm and will undergo surgery.
Holt MP Anthony Byrne, whose federal electorate includes Endeavour Hills, said his thoughts were with the police officers involved in the incident. “The shocking and horrific events that occurred in my electorate have quite clearly had an impact on the electorate and the community at large,” Mr Byrne said, outside Parliament on Wednesday. “I want to say right from the outset, I want to thank the officers involved, I want to thank the AFP officer and the Victoria Police officer who literally put their lives on the line to keep our community safe.”
Witness appeal POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a car in Endeavour Hills on Sunday. It’s understood the male pedestrian was crossing Heatherton Road near Matthew Flinders Avenue about 3.45pm when he collided with a Holden Commodore travelling eastbound. Emergency services were called to the incident but the pedestrian, believed to be in his thirties, died at the scene. The driver of the Commodore, a man from Endeavour Hills, has assisted police with their inquiries. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Deep delusion PREMIER Denis Napthine, Ports Minister David Hodgett, Minister for Education Martin Dixon, Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Antonella Celi, Port of Hastings CEO Mike Lean and possibly others are all on the public record claiming that the Port of Hastings is a “natural deep water port”. Having sailed on Western Port for 20+ years I was aware that yachties came from all over the world to run aground in Western Port. Running aground was probably the first thing I did when I started sailing Western Port, and something I’ve done on numerous occasions since, even after fitting a depth sounder! My disbelief at the claim that it’s a “natural deep water port” could not have been greater had I read that “the earth is flat”! The definition of a “natural deep water port” is a port which can accommodate the 12.4 metre draft of a Panamax ship without dredging. A Panamax ship is the maximum ship dimensions that can fit into the Panama Canal, hence the name. The water in the proposed container port, between the existing BlueScope jetty and Yaringa, is on average about 10.3 metres deep and will require extensive dredging to 16+ metres to accommodate the new Panamax ships, so clearly by no stretch of the imagination does it qualify as a “natural deep water port”! Next step was to pop down to the Port of Hastings office and ask them to point out this mysterious “natural deep water port”. The staff member was very helpful and immediately pointed out the channel in from Bass Straight between The Nobbies and Flinders. I explained that this was an entrance channel and not to my mind a port, ‘but it’s within the port boundaries’ was the reply. Apparently, to the very expensive $110 million Port of Hastings Development Authority thinking, if a small portion of a deemed port area is ‘natural and deep’ you can

HERE we go again, let’s listen to the vandals and ask them what to do... next we give them areas to spray their rubbish, and we’re back to where we were 10 years ago. Council was dragged kicking and screaming to implement its current strategy. What is that strategy they are hiding from us? It is free graffiti removal off all property, a free number to report it on, a tag database to track the vandals, and vandal accountability - just because they have become lazy, and want to walk away from what was Australia’s most successful graffiti abatement program. We now are faced with stupid ideas again. Just remove graffiti, council. That has been your strategy since 2003, it has only fallen down in a heap since key councillors left and you lot were left in charge with no idea of how to continue with strategies already in place. Lazy Casey!!!. Maria via web. RE: Council calls for port support THEY forgot to mention freight trains will cut thru Cranbourne and Lynbrook 24/7 destroying our suburbs! Mario, via web.

It would have been all net if there was one at Merinda Park Community Centre. 127881 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS pretend that it’s all ‘natural and deep’! The five-kilometre area to be dredged and concreted is currently sea-grass and mangroves, the foundation of Western Port’s marine environment and it’s within sight of the office of Federal ‘Environment’ Minister Greg Hunt. I am utterly appalled that publicly elected officials and compliant public servants are so willing to deliberately promote a misleading myth, in order to gain public approval to build a mega container port (25 thousand containers per day) in the magnificent, fragile, globally listed Ramsar wetlands of Western Port. Graeme Hanigan, Cannons Creek.
Elephant in the room THE Napthine Government is unbelievable. First they bombard us with blatant political advertising in the guise of “information” for the people of Victoria which the people pay for. Now they are getting their political mates on Casey Council to advocate for a “white elephant” road tunnel which will do little for 90 per cent of Casey residents and certainly not help the local road gridlock we are facing in Casey. Michael Thompson, Cranbourne.
Ray’s
say
Crime fighters I WRITE in response to a misleading letter from Nina Cooper (Socially Speaking, News, 11 September). The Napthine State Government is dedicated to increasing public safety, an additional 1700 police officers are now on the beat meaning that more criminals are being arrested, leading to a safer Victoria. Crime was rampant under Labor. Under the Napthine Government’s tougher stand on crime, crime detection has increased by 10.9 per cent and tougher sentencing laws mean that when criminals are caught it’s not just a slap on the wrist. Funding for the prevention of domestic violence has also increased along with a greater focus on community awareness. Suspended sentences have been abolished and PSOs have been introduced to suburban railway stations including those across the City of Casey, making travel safer. We have provided the largest crime fighting budget in history, with 12.8 per cent more police in the Southern Metropolitan Region which includes Casey. The Napthine State Coalition Government is building a better, safer Victoria. Inga Peulich, South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP.

THE Cranbourne Turf club will welcome more than a huge crowd to its carnival this year, but will also unveil its $4 million grandstand redevelopment. In one of the most significant new chapters for the turf club, the new facility will open when the cup carnival kicks off on Friday, 10 October with night racing. The Cranbourne Turf Club has geared up for a Spring Carnival bigger than ever, with the new facility sure to attract more crowds. The facility boasts a fully enclosed glass panelled grandstand and complete 700-seat function centre, which will be open for visitors to enjoy race day with extensive bar and food options. The facility will open ahead of the TAC Cranbourne Cup on Sunday 12 October, one of the biggest dates on Cranbourne Racing Clubs calendar. Chief Executive Officer of the Cranbourne Turf Club Neil Bainbridge said it’s an exciting event. “The TAB Cranbourne Cup Carnival is an exciting event on the Spring Racing Carnival calendar,” he said. “It warms up with a great night of racing on the Friday, before the main event on Sunday.” “There really is something for everyone with quality racing, live entertainment and

IT’S an opportunity for new mums to have fun and a bonus if they get fitter in the process. This is how personal trainer Julie Cox from Berwick views her Mums in Motion fitness group - a chance for new mums who may find themselves struggling physically and emotionally to find their confidence again. Julie, herself a mum, set up the group when she was living interstate four years ago before taking the idea to Berwick when she moved back to Victoria. The fitness sessions are now held several times a week at Arch Brown Reserve in Berwick, as well elsewhere across Melbourne, with betweem 15 to 20 mums attending each time. “The whole concept is a
fitness group but it’s primarily trying to target new mums in the area and we get a lot of young mums on board,” Julie said. “We have relations with post natal depression groups - they refer new mums to us. “It’s a safe, fun environment for mums to work out in. “They lose the baby weight and can start new friendships. “t’s a mental thing for mums and a bonus if they lose weight along the way.” But while it may be a chance for the mums to let their hair down, Julie makes no excuses for also putting them through their physical paces. A standard Mums in Motion session will include a bout of boxing, circuit classes and cardio work, while there is also
a strong focus on nutrition and diet. “The program’s become huge, especially in the last 12 months. “We do sessions in Berwick but we also do a four-week challenge, and we’ve got up to 50 to 60 ladies getting involved over the back-to-back months,” Julie said. “It’s convenient for them to bring their kids along, especially the Berwick group, they can bring their babies while they train. “There’s play equipment right next to where we train, so the kids look forward to coming up as much as they do.” For more information on Mums in Motion, visit www. facebook.com/MumsInMotion, or contact Julie on 0432 071 259.

We don’t mind if you change our plans. It’s called layout flexibility. Arden Homes is a different sort of company creating very different homes. Firstly, our homes are architect designed and inspired to bring a new sense of space, light and sweeping architectural proportions. You sense the difference immediately. Innovative sun courts, picture windows and full length windows and views that connect inside and out are hallmarks of our design. We insist on luxury standard inclusions such as porcelain tiles, Smeg appliances, Franke sinks, quality carpet, and stone benchtops throughout. Secondly, we limit the number of houses we build, and are up-front about the pricing of display home extras. “Arden let us swap rooms around so our new home is exactly as we want it.” – Sharon and Michael, Croydon And best of all, we encourage layout flexibility. It means you can work with us to switch and swap rooms and features to suit your lot size, orientation and family needs. Visit an Arden display to see and feel the difference. And ask us how we can tailor the design to make one of our stunning homes your unique dream home.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
A sense of innovation By BRIDGET SCOTT A LOCAL business is set to make waves in the world of commerce, following the announcement that it will receive a grant of more than $70,000. Successful Endeavours will receive a grant valued at $75,000 as part of the first round of the Victorian Coalition Government’s Driving Business Innovation program. Member for Gembrook Brad Battin announced the grant last Monday, 8 September. As a result, Successful Endeavours will work with Melbourne Water to look into the development of a chemically resistant suite of sensors that can transmit humidity, air flow and pressure data from inside the sewer, reducing the cost of manual monitoring. Mr Battin congratulated the business for winning the feasibility study funding. This Driving Business Innovation
program was funded in the 2013 State Budget and aims to provide support for small to medium business enterprises. It allows them to partner with a government agency to co-develop a new product or service in response to a particular technology change. The successful recipients are granted $75,000 to undertake a feasibility study into their proposal, which will further be assessed for a potential grant worth up to $1 million to develop a proof-of-concept prototype. “Successful Endeavours is one of 10 companies that have been awarded feasibility study grants for proposing solutions to challenges in areas including water, waste management, health and agriculture,” Mr Battin said. “The applications were formally assessed against program selection criteria by the Victorian Government agencies responsible for each technology challenge.”

Healthy business, healthy Armed with hands-on skills community and healthy minds By BRIDGET COOK BUSINESSES from across Cranbourne came together for a night of networking and learning at the Balla Balla Community Centre recently. The Cranbourne Chamber of Commerce (CCC) hosted a successful business networking evening for its members and their guests on Thursday 28 August. Mastering Change director Kate Welk, who is a local personal development and professional leadership coach, was the guest speaker for the night. She presented on the topic of ‘business and community: the mutual benefits of partnering’, focusing on how business and community are co-dependent. “Community relies on healthy businesses to ensure the community thrives and businesses rely on healthy communities to ensure their business thrives,” she said. Balla Balla Community Centre manager Maree Cullinan also spoke to the crowd

gage in activities that enhance health, social wellbeing and advance education opportunities,” she said. The CCC hosts networking evenings each month. To find out more about how to join visit www.cranbournechamber.com.au.
A BERWICK horticulture apprentice learnt some new tricks of the trade during a recent visit to Singapore. Benjamin Carter works at Haileybury College in Keysborough and received a Skilling Australia Foundation scholarship for excellence and leadership. The trip was designed to provide the hands-on skills that apprentices need to land and keep jobs - skills they’re unlikely to glean from a more traditional classroom setting. “Having unrestricted access, seeing all these amazing sites first-hand, and meeting all these experienced landscapers, rather than just being talked to in a classroom, was amazing,” Benjamin said. “The biggest eye-opener for me was the lack of tools and resources available in Singapore. “But, the landscapers are still able to get the same result as us in Australia - it might just take a little bit longer. “I’ll definitely use some of their techniques in my day-today work, particularly when it

comes to planting trees.” Benjamin visited the award-winning Tanah Merah Country Club and one of the oldest nurseries in Singapore, Prince’s Landscape. The Prince’s team and Nature Landscapes staff showed Benjamin some of their projects, and he attended the Singapore Flower and Garden Show and toured Resort World Sentosa. He’s enrolled in the Certificate III Turf Management (Sport) course and has worked at Haileybury College for about 18 months. He was recently named the most outstanding first year apprentice at Northern Mel-
bourne Institute of TAFE. Benjamin received a Skilling Australia Foundation scholarship for excellence and leadership, funded by The Percy Baxter Charitable Trust and the Eddy Dunn Endowment through the Perpetual Foundation. The not-for-profit Skilling Australia Foundation regularly offers merit-based scholarships to fund short study trips, for students who demonstrate a high level of academic achievement, leadership skills, and other outstanding abilities or have contributed to the community through their chosen profession.
Angels are in for fund-raising By LACHLAN MOORHEAD WHEN Barb Scott found herself on maternity leave, she needed an outlet. At least that’s how she refers to her self-made business, Admin Angels, which next month will hold a special Girls Night In event at The Old Cheese Factory in Berwick. “It’s basically for a lot of local people to come together, for business networking, but the focus is on a good cause,” Barb said this week. “All the money raised goes to the Cancer Council, and there’s a lot of support from local businesses sponsoring the event. “There will also be Cancer Council representatives coming along.” Tickets for the event will be $40, including a light supper, while all the money raised will be donated straight to the Cancer Council. Swimming champion Tammy van
Wisse will also be the keynote speaker on the night. Admin Angels is an administration business which helps other businesses, mostly local, get their affairs in order, helping complete those fiddly tasks that employers don’t always put aside the time to do. “Admin Angels is my business, I’m a virtual assistant,” Barb said. “I have a team of six girls who are all based in Melbourne and they’re all virtual assistants and we do client work, admin tasks. “We can take care of their client data base and send out newsletters to the clients. “We keep in contact with the clients through newsletters, we can be the face of their business, we can manage their email accounts and chase up outstanding invoices - any admin stuff they get bogged down in.” Barb said the idea for Admin An-
gels originated when she found herself at home raising her young children and realised she could still make a worthwhile use of her spare time. “I was on maternity leave with my first child and I needed an outlet, I needed my brain to be active,” she said. “I’ve always been in office management type roles prior to having a family so it was always my passion and something that was a strength I had. “When I was at home quite a lot with a young baby, I got on the internet and reached out to a few local business groups. “It’s fantastic, it’s flexible, I can work until 2am in the morning and no one knows or cares, the technology around these days is amazing.” The Girls Night In event will be held on Tuesday 21 October at the Old Cheese Factory, at 7pm. For more information, contact Barb on 0419 330 490.

Cage match WARZONE 20 is back in Berwick in a big way with the first ever tag team Cage Match. New WarZone Tag Champions Mike Burr and Cremator stood victorious at the last event, however their rivals Dowie James and Enforcer have demanded a rematch in a steel cage. Burr and Cremator are keen to thrill the fans and move on to other opponents but Dowie James and Enforcer are just as keen, and even more angry and driven in their hatred to put an end to the new tag champs’ reign, as quickly as its started. The Steel-Cage Tag-Team Championship Match will see Mike Burr and The Cremator vs The New Lightning Strike Coalition (Dowie James and Enforcer). Plus with many other great matches there is a four-way elimination match for the Wom-
en’s Title match. With the women’s division now back in full force, WarZone is delivering once again, bringing not only a women’s title match... but a match that will feature four of Australia’s best. This match will feature local fan favourites Miami and Kellyanne English while being joined by Queensland’s Toni Storm and South Australia’s Savannah Summers. These four women will face each other at WarZone 20 for the Women’s Title in a history making night. *Card Subject to change. Pre-book number: 0459 362 423, Berwick Secondary College-Performing arts centre, Manuka Road, Melway ref 111 H, Doors open at 6.30pm and the show starts at 7.30pm. Ticket prices: adult: $20, children: $15.

Height of acting for Bryce By LACHLAN MOORHEAD BRYCE Nicholls’ height has proved more than a little helpful over the journey. The six-foot-six teenager, an aspiring actor from Berwick, was asked to again take part in the Victorian Youth Theatre’s upcoming production of The Conference of the Birds, despite now being older than the group’s age limit. The former member of the group will reprise his role in the production to be performed next month at Chapel Off Chapel, due to what he refers to as a slight technicality. “I’ve performed for the group in this play before, and the problem is that the suit they made only fits me,” Bryce, 18, laughed. “So I was asked to be a part of it again,” he said. The production will feature a cast of 20 as they tell the
Bryce Nicholls is well and truly on the right path to achieving his acting dream. 127319 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS story of a group of birds who seek their King, the mythical Simorgh - a benevolent bird of Persian myth. Bryce said it was handy to have performed the piece previously, allowing him to hone in on the play’s nuances.
“It’s always good to have the extra knowledge, you experiment a bit more, knowing the positives of the live performance,” he said. Bryce’s involvement with Victorian Youth Theatre, which runs acting courses for children aged 8 to 18, began in his early high school years, and solidified his dreams of becoming a professional actor. “I joined the group during my second year of high school, in Year 8. There was an article in the newspaper offering drama groups to people and I thought I’d give it a shot, and I fell in love with it,” he said. Victorian Youth Theatre will present The Conference of the Birds at Chapel off Chapel - 12 Little Chapel Street, Prahran from Wednesday 1 to Saturday 4 October. Reece’s victory By JARROD POTTER
Jackson Lino starred at the front for Cardinia United, kicking their solitary goal and creating a number of chances from his corner kicks. 127775 Pictures: JARROD POTTER
It just didn’t quite happen By JARROD POTTER THE finals’ run was brief but the success of 2014 will live on at the Cardinia United Junior Soccer Club. Cardinia United under-13 South D boys team came into the semi-final full of vigour after winning the league championship with a 13-2 record after the home-and-away season. Despite an attacking style of soccer in the first half giving the Cougars a number of chances up forward, the best efforts of the Pakenham-based soccer club weren’t enough to guide them to a grand-final appearance. Jackson Lino stormed forward at any chance - using his speed to burn off the Sandringham defence - and also starred from the set pieces and corners as he lofted chance after chance into the box. Otim Arima and Vince Scacco mopped up in defence to keep Sandringham from having too many shots on target. Scacco’s cool head under pressure allowed the likes of Lino, Carter Warne and Tristan Durovic to push forward and generate a storm of powerful strikes on the Sandringham goals. A potential goal was disallowed for Cardinia United - a strike seemed to break the
plane but the linesman was unable to call it in - keeping the game alive. Sandringham was on the back-foot throughout the match, but its two defining breakthrough runs in the second half resulted in a pair of goals which proved the difference. Cougars wingman-turnedstriker Jackson Lino cannoned in a goal in the dying minutes to keep the draw viable, but the whistle sounded before the Cougars could complete the comeback. Coach Mark Dunn said everything but the final result fell the Cougars way and he congratulated Sandringham on its victory. “It’s all good - we were pretty close but it didn’t quite happen,” Dunn said. “Through the whole game I had a lot of people say to me that we dominated most of the game, but we couldn’t get it in there. “They had two shots at goal and made them, but that’s soccer and you have to hand it to Sandringham.” Dunn was impressed with his charges’ adherence to the strategy - not rushing their passes and staying calm in the defensive end. “Yesterday (Sunday) was a culmination of a whole season’s work and they put to-
gether the game I wanted to put together,” Dunn said. “Not panicking in defence - we could stop, switch the ball in the backline and get it out to the wing and I couldn’t be more proud of them.” Cardinia United’s under13s take away the FFV league championship from 2014 and a lot of lessons along the way, which Dunn made sure the team knew despite the disappointment of the loss. “It was a great game - as I said to the boys afterwards - the league championship builds up over the whole season, but this was just 50 minutes that didn’t go our way,” Dunn said. “At the end of the day, the boys made a final. “As Rob Hastings said to the boys before the match ‘you may not ever make one again… so get over the nerves and enjoy it’. “And that’s what they did.” Sandringham will face Seaford in the 13 D boys grand final. Cardinia United Under 13: Tyrone Martier, Cartner Warne, Jordy Dunn, Otim Arima, Jackson Lino, Jared Lawrence, Vince Scacco, Dylan Raynes, Deng Wol, Tristan Durovic, Andrew Schellebeck, Mitchell Ostrognaj and Jas Singh.

IT WILL be an unforgettable summer for Pakenham soccer dynamo Reece Caldecourt. Caldecourt, 17, has earned his place in the Melbourne Victory’s National Youth League (NYL) team, which if all things go to plan, could earn him an ALeague debut in the upcoming 2014/15 season. His path to the Victory started as a three-year-old in Bournemouth, England, where the young Victory defender started his soccer journey with Littledown Juniors, Bournemouth Poppies and Poole Town Youth. “I was very young when I started - probably about three - and I played small sided stuff and got into it through the indoor version of the sport and moved up and up,” Caldecourt said. Relocating to Australia when he was 11 with his family, Caldecourt picked up where he left off in England with his soccer as he started to move up the ranks and play in the former Victorian Champions League (VCL) and clubs around Victoria including the Casey Comets. He earned a trial for the Victory through a school soccer performance with Haileybury College, as coach Grant Brebner - a former Melbourne Victory and English Premier League player - encouraged him to trial for the NYL squad. “I got scouted when I was just playing for my school in a school match,” Caldecourt said. “I was having a good game
and one of our coaches - Grant Brebner - he’s an ex-Manchester United player - he said you’ve got a lot of good about you but a lot of bad as well cause I’ve got a bit of a temper on the field as well - but if you learn to control that you’re good to go.” Caldecourt stormed through the trials to earn his place in the side and vividly remembers the moment he was told he had become part of the Victory. “I was overjoyed - it stayed with me and I reckon it will stay with me for a while,” he said. “I remember it crystal clear - it was just me and the coach Darren Davis and he turned around and said we want you in the team and I was over the moon, couldn’t be happier.” The full back isn’t setting his sights too high for this season and just wants to improve and work towards the ultimate soccer dream - a professional contract. “Definitely just want improve my game as they’ve said you’re still in the youth system and it’s about improvement,” Caldecourt said. “That’s all I want to do - be the best player I can be and in years to come gather the skills together to get a pro-contract and set my life up.” Caldecourt also excelled at the recently held School Sport Australia 19-and-under Boys Soccer Championships - his efforts representing Victoria earned him an Australian team berth and he will travel to China
and England early next year on tour. He wanted to thank his family for their support of his soc-

This was Beaconsfield’s 10th consecutive win and its ninth senior premiership; its first since 2004, and condemned Cranbourne to its third grand final loss in a row. “I just didn’t know in the first half, we were nervous, just waiting again,” a relieved Evans said after the match. “We missed a few shots early and their pressure was just right up, and we knew it would be, but we said it was a marathon, not a sprint, so we just kept on going. “The last half of the second quarter I thought our pressure started to go up, and that’s when I thought if we were close enough at half-time, we’d be a chance. “And the third quarter ... well, what can you say.” Beaconsfield’s 6.1 to 0.1 third term was the true definition of a ‘premiership quarter’, breaking Cranbourne hearts with its trademark high pressure and intensity. Beaconsfield had many good players on the day, but skipper Daniel Mislicki was outstanding. Running hard on his way to five goals, ‘Slick’ was a clear and deserving winner of the AFL Vic Country Best on Ground Medallion. Beacy has had a terrific blend of youth and experience this season, and youngsters Nick McPherson, Jayden Gee and Brandon White played significant roles in the victory, while club stalwart Damian Szwaja, full back Daniel Battaglin and champion ruckman Scott Meyer were other notable contributors. For Evans, this is his third premiership with the club, backing up success as a player in 1999 and 2001. “Footy’s been my life since I was a kid, so to play in two flags when I was 20 and 22 and now to do it again 13 years later, all at Beacy ... it’s just a special feeling.” RESERVES PAKENHAM had no answer to a ruthless Narre Warren, going down by 83 points in the reserves grand final on Saturday. The Lions held on for dear life in the first half - just 22 points down at half-time - before the Magpies piled on 13 goals to three after the break. The Wickers led at quarter-time, but the Magpies kicked six goals to none in the second quarter to set up the win. The Wickers trailed -2.16(28) to 5.3(33) - at three-quarter time but goals to Luke Nelson and Trent Thomas saw coach Russel Trait join his son, and captain, Jarryd, on the premiership dais. Jonathon Bishop and Mat McLardy joined Nelson and Trait as Berwick’s best.

Doves return with olive leaf after drought By JARROD POTTER ESCAPING decades of premiership drought, Doveton finally triumphed in Casey Cardinia’s A-Grade competition by seven goals over Beaconsfield. Only one year after their A-Grade team was withdrawn from the Casey Cardinia competition, Doveton has gone from worst to first and claimed the premiership with an emphatic 50-43 victory. Doveton finished the season undefeated, a perfect 16-0 record, but had to take the longer path to the premiership after the Doves lost a semi-final to Beaconsfield. With a week off and the alreadyestablished premiership firepower, the Eagles would have fancied their chances heading into the last Casey Cardinia clash of 2014. The final started horribly for the Eagles though as champion goalkeeper Abbie Sheers fell awkwardly after a contest and had to be helped from the court with a suspect ACL tear. Beaconsfield rallied to regain composure after Sheers was helped off - shifting Sarah Murphy to goalkeeper for the rest of the match and bringing Kaela Hughes to goal defence. To their credit the under-
sized Eagles managed to restrict Doveton’s powerful goalers to 13 goals in the first term and keep the deficit to two goals at the first change. The Eagles pushed ahead through the third term - shooting out to a 2624 lead - but the Samason star began to shine its brightest from there on. The biggest problem for Beaconsfield came from one of the youngest players on the court Doveton goal shooter Rahni Samason lit up the court as she nailed 50 goals in a best-on-court performance. “It felt so exhilarating,” Samason said. “I was just running on adrenaline basically and it was amazing.” Samason had immaculate service from the midcourt and defenders Maggie Taumaoe, captain Liz Edwards and Linda Hunt made sure Doveton didn’t let Beaconsfield off the chain. It left Beaconsfield on the chasing end following a five goal in a row onslaught from the 16-year-old goaler in the fourth term and the gap only widened from there by the time the final whistle blew. For the Doves Samason, Taumaoe and Aila Pera stole the show and Rata Hunia fed the ball to the

in-form Samason superbly. “It was such a huge team effort,” Edwards said. “All I can say was that was our main goal - just to get in the top five and to come undefeated, then lose a semi and just push through to the grand final and take it home was the best feeling ever. “I’m prouder than any other coach on the planet - our hard times all paid off.”
Berwick was bested in B Grade and C Grade competitions as Keysborough and Beaconsfield respectively held aloft the premiership cups. In lower grade results, Narre Warren claimed four premierships - under-13 red, under-15 red, under-15 white and under-17 red - and played off in five of the six junior netball finals.

Complex frontal styling, bonnet power bulge, sleek roof, brilliant engine… the new BMW M4 coupe has it all. tra charge for some items that cheaper cars provide as standard. The option list includes Lane Change and Blind Spot Warning ($1000), Head-Up Display ($1700), Tyre Pressure Warning ($550) and Parking Assistant ($675). The impressive BMW Connected Drive electronic system includes Intelligent Emergency Call which transmits vehicle crash information to a BMW call centre from where emergency service are alerted if required. Similarly, TeleServices transmits breakdown information if the driver gets really stuck. BMW M4 uses a widescreen high-resolution 8.8-inch colour display that includes satellite navigation. There’s a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound set-up, digital radio, DVD drive, on-board computer with 20 Gb hard drive, USB and aux sockets and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming. The front sports seats are firm but reasonably comfortable, their adjustable side bolsters make it suitable for differing widths of backside from the slim to the extensive. Access to the M4’s rear seats through the front doors is reasonably easy. There are only two seats back there, with a small stowage bin between them. Legroom is limited and the seats are better suited to children than grown-ups. Headroom is better than would be expected and the M4 can cope with six-footers with a little to spare. The BMW M4 has a surprisingly large boot at 445 litres.
It’s reasonably easy to load but goes forward a long way, which can be a hassle at times. Using launch control, the zero to 100km/h acceleration is 4.1 seconds with the automatic transmission and 4.3 seconds with the manual. Acceleration is almost instantaneous, with the twin turbos combining to eliminate most turbo lag. The lag can be felt at low revs and speeds but once the engine is up into the interesting areas it’s a real stunner to sit behind, offering fast response and superb sound. The steering, which is now electro-mechanical, suspension and engine each have a choice of three settings which really add to the driving enjoyment. The new M4 officially uses just 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined driving cycle. In real life we found it using 11 to 13 litres per 100 kilometres under reasonably sensible driving, climbing past 15 litres per 100 when going hard. Open road and motoring driving did bring it way down - to eight to nine litres per 100 kilometres. One test drive of this new BMW M4 is likely to hook most people in a big way. The engine sounds great, the suspension and steering talk to the driver and if it doesn’t leave a smile on their face then they weren’t trying hard enough. Add styling that’s pretty radical and they will be happy to dip into their bank account to the tune of $166,430. Model range M4 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol two-door coupe: $166,430 (manual and automatic).

THE BMW M4 looks great, goes like a rocket, sounds the part and has brakes that make the eyes bulge forwards when fully applied. The M4 coupe has a sleek rear end and a low-slung look that grabbed plenty of attention during the just completed week of road testing. The lower area of the front is extremely complex, which looks great, but the repair bills would be high if it touched a kerb. BMW is one of the many European makes that have parking sensors at the front that don’t work unless they are turned on manually, thus increasing the chances of the aforementioned bills. The long sculpted bonnet has a power bulge that gives it a purposeful look and the rear spoiler is particularly well integrated into the boot lid. The roof of the BMW M4 follows the lead of the M3 coupe in being made from lightweight carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) to reduces the centre of gravity and further enhance road grip. They were in black and provide an eye-catching contrast to the deep red body colour on the test car. A glass sunroof is available as a no-cost option. The M4 coupe weighs about 60 kilograms less than the previous M3 coupe thanks to clever engineering and the use of added aluminium. BMW has moved from a naturally aspirated V8 engine in the previous model (M3 coupe) to turbocharged straight-six in the M4 coupe. The six generates an impressive 317kW of power and 550Nm of torque from just 3.0 litres. That’s well above the output of the 4.0-litre V8 (309kW / 400Nm). Transmission options are seven-speed M double-clutch automatic or the no-cost option of an upgraded six-speed manual. In a sign of the times, the manual is available only on special order. The BMW M4 comes with six airbags, enhanced braking systems and dynamic stability control. However there is an ex-
