Geelong cops hit the alert
By PAUL MILLAR
LOCAL police have been placed on high alert after a terror suspect was shot dead when he attacked police in Melbourne. Stations around the Geelong region are on a “heightened awareness, according to Geelong Superintendent Daryl Clifton. Chief police commissioner Ken Lay sent a memo to every police officer in the state, urging increased awareness and to “exercise extreme caution please stay vigilant, stay alert and stay safe. Be prepared for anything. The latest update went beyond the metropolitan region with the police chief warning country members to be extra cautious. “This is not just a metro issue - country members and single officer patrols must remain vigilant and consider their safety, the police chief said in a memo viewed by the Independent. Station commanders across the region addressed staff in relation to the fatal shooting by police outside the Endeavour Hills police station. Two police officers were seriously injured after being stabbed by the teenager. Superintendent Clifton said security arrangements had been strengthened. “But it is business as usual, we have just reinforced our security arrangements and that is not being alarmist, he said.
In his memo to officers Chief Commissioner Lay warned members to fully kit up when on duty, even for short trips and not to hesitate in calling to call for backup if needed. Ron Iddles, the secretary of the Police Association, wanted command to go even further and arm officers operating the front desk. “We believe that all of our members that are dealing with the public should be armed, he told The Independent. Superintendent Clifton said officers on the desk at Geelong were already “fully kitted out. Geelong’s Muslim leader, Imam, Mohammad Ramzan, said that he would address the shooting of the teenage terror suspect and the stabbing of the two police officers when he conducted morning prayers on Friday. “I will be warning against any involvement in any terror organisation, we want nothing to do with them we want to live in harmony, he said. “Our worries are the same as others, our happiness is the same as others, we are Australian. Footy fans are likely to see first-hand an upgrade to security at the grand final with more officers visible and an increase in undercover officers at the MCG. Chief Commissioner Lay said the environment was changing following the attack on the police officers in Endeavour Hills and the community felt less assured.

Councillor sees the light and lets it shine By NOEL MURPHY A LEADLIGHT feature window of Geelong’s original coat of arms could be resurrected and put on public display if heritage councillor Tony Ansett has his way. The five-metre crest, presently squirrelled away in a City Hall basement beneath Gheringhap Street, would be a perfect fit in the $40 million library/heritage centre under construction in Johnstone Park. “City Hall originally had two staircases leading up to a massive
five-metre leadlight window with the classic crest of Geelong in the middle of it, Cr Ansett said. “It was lifted it out in its frame when they upgraded the building back in the ’80s, it’s in perfect condition. “I’m open to suggestions where we should put it on show but it needs to come back out into the light of day. It needs to be mounted and backlit - it could be perfect in the new library. Insignia within the crest included sheep, wheat, grapes and shipping, denoting the district’s agri-
cultural and immigration pursuits. A kangaroo in its centre denotes an inability to go backwards while the motto on the crest says, “By the right use of God’s gifts. Heraldry and Geelong’s coat of arms have been a moot point in the past year with the city re-incorporating two lions into a new crest for the City of Greater Geelong. But official insignia is just one aspect of Geelong’s heritage Cr Ansett wants to see brought back into public view. He told the Independent dozens of historic items had been identi-
fied which he wanted recognised again. “There are things all around town, he said. “The gas lamp that was outside the Corio Hotel, two fountains hidden away in the botanical gardens that used to be in the city, the Queen Victoria statue that used to be in Market Square - I’m not happy with where she sits at moment, he said. “I want to showcase what Geelong has by getting it into better locations and highlighting what we’ve got.

CFA fire cover-up By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG lives and property were being endangered by a deceptive political cover-up by the CFA of its response times at Lara and Bacchus Marsh, firefighters have told the Independent . Premier Denis Napthine and Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells had thrown a cloak of secrecy over information that should be freely available to the public, especially to people living in fire-prone areas, the United Firefighters Union said. “This information is public and people paying the fire service levy have a right to know if they’re protected and covered in their time of need,” UFU secretary Peter Marshall said. “Response times are critical in terms of maximum potential to save lives and minimise property damage, the standard is eight minutes for urban area.” The UFU’s Freedom of Information request for response times at 14 volunteer fire stations - including Lara and Bacchus Marsh - was rejected on the grounds it was likely to cause a “loss of confidence” in CFA services. Mr Marshall said Mr Well could readily direct the CFA to release the response times but refused to do so for reasons of political self-interest. “Geelong and the Surf Coast are fire-prone and they have response
times for a reason - it’s not just an arbitrary thing, it’s to save lives and minimise property damage,” he said. “Their excuses are not valid. They’re deceptive and misleading, and reek of a political cover-up. It’s an abrogation of their responsibility to safeguard the community.” The CFA’s refusal was predicated on the claim it was “an agency engaged in trade or commerce” but Mr Wells did not answer queries by the Independent about the CFA’s status as an emergency service/utility. He accused Mr Marshall of deliberately misleading Victorians with “outrageous scaremongering and blatant lies” as he pushed “his own agenda” and “political self-interest” “The reality is any FoI requests for the CFA are dealt with independently and directly by the agency itself,” Mr wells said. “These processes and decisions are made independently of government, and that is a process we’ve put in place, reinforced and strongly support. “Any issues in relation to an unsuccessful request are matters for the CFA and the independent FoI commissioner. “Residents in Lara and Bacchus Marsh can be assured that CFA firefighters continue to provide a vital service responding to emergencies and keeping the local community safe.”
Cement works estate gets nod A $300 MILLION housing estate at Fyansford has moved a step nearer with City Hall giving the nod to planning paperwork needed to push the ICD Property project ahead - without public input. ICD Property recently bought the old Geelong Cement Works land and former CSR Quarry site from the Moltoni Corporation, which tried for years, ultimately unsuccessfully, to get the new suburb up and running. City Hall will now advise the State Government it supports a planning scheme change for the Fyansford site tipped to see 1000 new homes -- without putting the plans out to the public for comment. Sales of stage one of the development were launched earlier this month. The City’s Cr Michelle Heagney said both properties had already been
rezoned to enable major residential and accompanying commercial and community development. She said the Greater Geelong council backed the plans because they would have “no impact on the community or surrounding landowners”. She said the planning scheme change was “essentially revising the format of previously approved development, with relocation of the site for a future neighbourhood shopping centre”. Cr Heagney said the relocation of the future neighbourhood shopping centre provided better accessibility and better separation from future more sensitive residential uses. If the State Government did not agree to the planning changes, the council would put the changes to the public “in the normal manner”, if Spring Street allowed it to do so.

Barry’s shoe biz reunion is in vogue By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN IT WAS one of Geelong’s best known and loved retail chains back when the footwear and textile industry was still a force in the regional economy. In its heyday Vogue Shoes boasted 100 staff across five city stores and another four suburban outlets as well as a warehouse and head office. Another two Vogue Safety Wear stores were added later. Barry Henderson - father of musical maestro, son Cam and grandson Taylor was there at the beginning in 1944 when his dad Reg bought a small footwear operation. “We started with three people,” Barry recalled. “The shop used to close for lunch. Dad was the first to stay open during lunch, getting into strife with the-then chamber of commerce,” Barry chuckled. “In 1944 the shop had a curtained-off section for the ladies. Men weren’t allowed to serve women.
“It was always a family-oriented business. The staff members were family, because we only grew through their efforts. “The connection with customers was wonderful in those days. We had a chiropodist on staff and we used to refer kids with foot problems to a top foot specialist.” Many of the former Vogue Shoes sites were now unrecognisable, Barry said. “The warehouse loading dock was where Fuel is now, with the warehouse upstairs. “Our main supplier was Clarks and they bought the operation in 1979. They intended to use the model and replicate it elsewhere. “They were always amazed we could sell so many shoes in one city. But they had a different way of running and it didn’t work in Geelong. “It was tragic really, it only lasted another six years.” Barry and his general manager of 23 years, Darryl Treloar, are hoping as many

Bird migration faces food risk
Inline champs roll in to town
By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG’S migratory birds face a devastating future if feeding sites on their Pacific Rim route are not better safeguarded, according to a Deakin University wildlife expert. Professor Marcel Klaassen, head of Deakin’s Centre for Integrative Ecology, said curlew sandpipers in particular faced decimation unless food security along the polluted Yellow Sea coast of China was improved. The birds travel thousands of kilometres from as far as Siberia and Arctic Alaska to wetlands in and around Geelong, he said. Melbourne Water’s sewerage farm at nearby Werribee and wetlands at Moolap to Geelong’s east were crucial to migrating species as they arrived exhausted and physically depleted from their annual sojourns, Prof Klaassen said. “The rate of decline among some of these bird species is such a dramatic drop in numbers as to be truly depressing,’’ he said. “The rate of decline in numbers of one of these, the curlew sandpiper, is a staggering 10 per cent per year which means they face extinction within a decade.” Prof Klaassen described the migration of millions of shorebirds to Australia as “one of the world’s greatest wonders”. So momentous were their epic voyages that birds lost two-thirds of their total body weight and their feathers were worn down to quill. “Some fly as many as 10,000km non-stop in an incredible feat of endurance and some wing vast distances over a lifetime equivalent to flying to the moon,’’ he said. “The Victorian Waders study group has been studying birds at Melbourne Water for years and the one going down very rapidly

By PAUL MILLAR THE best inline skaters in Australia will face off over the coming week in Geelong during the national championships. Up to 500 competitors of all ages will contest the series at The Arena with national selection up for grabs, prior to the World and Oceania championships. Raul Aparicio, a senior coach in Geelong, expects several thousand to attend the championship, with family, support crews and spectators in attendance. “It will be a real boost to the local economy and we also see it as a good opportunity to also boost what is a vibrant hockey community in Geelong to another level,” Mr Aparicio said. Geelong is regarded as the Australian powerhouse of inline hockey with 30-50 teams playing locally every year for the past 15 years, and thousands of locals trying their hand at the sport. The region has won the majority of Victorian championships in the first and second division over the past three years, which was taken into account when organisers decided which city should host the national series. Mr Aparicio, who operates the Newtown Rollerway centre, said he expected up to four skaters from his venue to make national selection. Inline Hockey is a competitive team sport played on inline skates with a minimum of five players per team including a goalie, who

Brazen thieves fire shop fears By PAUL MILLAR A DARK-skinned thief, armed with a lump of wood, fled emptyhanded after holding up a liquor store in Newcomb. Detective Senior-Constable Daryl Crosthwaite said police were examining CCTV footage of the attempted robbery at Watsons Road outlet on Wednesday “He’s gone in there armed with a piece of wood and demanded cash from the till, that request was refused and he fled the scene on foot,” the detective said. Police are examining forensic evidence from the scene. The would-be thief was wearing a beanie at the time, around 6pm, and he is believed to be aged
from 25-35. He is of stocky build and of small stature. Anybody with any information is asked to call the detective on 5225 3285. Meanwhile, an Indian couple, operating a milk bar in Geelong West, say they will have to upgrade their security after a brazen armed robbery on their Elizabeth Street shop. Mahbub Rabbani, said his wife Maksuda had been terrified after being robbed at gunpoint during a period when the street would have been buzzing with traffic at around 12.30pm. The theft, last Friday, was captured on CCTV footage and Mr Rabbani said the two thieves
rian standards for sulphur dioxide levels in air were more lenient than overseas standards. The Alcoa plant, presently for sale, employs 80 people and has been the target of a protracted campaign demanding it shut following Alcoa’s closure of its aluminium smelter at Geelong’s Point Henry, which the plant had powered. “It is imperative that Anglesea is prioritised in all planning and prevention activities,” Cr Smith said. In particular, work plans for the Alcoa mine needed to “specifically address best practice fire prevention, mitigation and management, to ensure that the disaster of Morwell is not repeated in Anglesea”, she said.
City hall promises to cut red tape By NOEL MURPHY
showed no nerves. “One watched at the door while the other came over to the till, they seemed pretty relaxed,’’ he said. “He said something that my wife could not understand and then he pulled out a gun and pointed at the till. “He told her to open it, which she did and then he grabbed the cash and they fled,’’ Mr Rabbani said. He was at Deakin University studying at the time and rushed home to console his terrified wife. He said the two men, aged in their early 20s had to be caught before they robbed another small business operator.
RED TAPE is being overhauled in a bid to drive new investment in Geelong, says City Hall. The City handles some 1600 applications a year but according to Mayor Darryn Lyons the system facing people wanting a planning permit can be complicated and frustrating. “As a business owner, I know first-hand,” he said. “We are a city open for business so we need to be supporting people wanting to do business here.” “Since becoming mayor one of my main goals has been to simplify the planning process, so I’m really excited about launching the ‘Planning for a 21st Century Smart City’ program and I look forward to some major changes.
“Some of these changes are under way and we’re already seeing record results. Around 80 per cent of applications are now being determined within the statutory 60 days, compared with the state average of 67 per cent.” The new system – dubbed ‘Planning for a 21st Century Smart City’ – changes the way planning applications are processed. It will include: Streamlining the amount of applications requiring referral. Cross-divisional pre-application meetings for major applications to provide upfront advice from all areas of council. 10-day permits for six types of planning applications for central Geelong. Improved resourcing, including a new dedicated VicSmart planner and two officers for subdi-
· · · ·
vision applications after planning permits are issued. Developing an IT system so applicants can track their application. Quarterly catch-ups with regular applicants. Redevelopment of the city’s website. Planning portfolio councillor Michelle Heagney said City Hall dealt with the third highest number of planning applications in Victoria. “In 2011, our planners were dealing with an average of 60 to 70 applications each, which is well above the industry standard of 25-30 applications,” she said. “We’re now streamlining processes and improving resources to speed up application turnaround times and make it easier for people to do business in Geelong.”

ALCOA’S Anglesea coal mine should not host a repeat of Morwell’s Hazelwood fire fiasco, says Surf Coast shire. The shire’s council will ask Emergency Management commissioner Craig Lapsley to review the power plant’s fire management planning, preparedness and response as a matter of priority. It wants an Emergency Management Commission task force recently appointed to check the state’s preparations for the coming fire season to assess the Alcoa plant together with the Anglesea community. The move was initiated by Cr Margot Smith to avoid a repeat of the 45-day Hazelwood fire earlier
this year –- believed the longest mine fire ever in the Latrobe Valley. “It had significant impacts on people living and working in Morwell and surrounding areas, sending smoke and ash over those areas,” Cr Smith said. “The subsequent Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry ... emphasised the need for fire preparedness and emergency response plans for both mine operators and emergency services.” Earlier this year, the Surf Coast Shire called on the Federal Government to clean up or decommission the Anglesea power plant. Last year it called for an explanation from the Environment Protection Authority why Victo-

Sweet deal for soul groovers By NOEL MURPHY FANCY touring the world, playing concerts at major festivals, writing and recording your own songs and music? Sure, it’s a great gig if you can get it. And you could, if you’re lucky enough to land a spot with Geelong’s famed Sweethearts soul band. Fresh from a US tour which saw shows at Nashville, Chicago and Milwaukee’s giant Summerfest, Sweethearts are auditioning for new members to join its next musical journey. “We are looking for girls who can groove in one or more of ... vocals, guitar, bass, keys, drums, trombone, trumpet, saxophone, flute,” says director Stephen McEwan.
The Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College-based Sweethearts are now in their 25th year. They’ve just finished filming series two of the acclaimed 13-part ABC3 series of the same name and looking for newcomers. “An intense 12-day tour saw them work and perform with the STAX music academy in Memphis,” McEwan said. “They were lucky enough to meet Wayne Jackson, a member of the Memphis Horns and a pioneer in soul music. “Their performances were a hit, earning the key to the city in Memphis presented by the mayor himself. “They were asked to appear on Memphis’ highest-rating TV
channel, which lead to an impromptu unscheduled performance at the world famous BB King’s in Beale St.” McEwan said Sweethearts needed new girls across a range of ages to guard against a mass exodus at the end of Year 12. He said the offer was like nothing found elsewhere. “When we were in the US, they couldn’t believe we were running this completely unique program,” he said. “I don’t think the opportunities Sweethearts offer are like anything offered by any other school-based band in world.” With a variety of gigs coming up, interested musicians should email steve@sweethearts.com.au.

Youth jobs hit as funding cut By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A PROGRAM aimed at reducing Geelong’s soaring youth unemployment rate faces being cut at the end of the year. The Youth Connections program, run in Geelong by Barwon Youth, had successfully re-engaged young people into education, training and employment. But federal budget cuts signalled the end of the program. Deputy opposition leader Tanya Plibersek told the Independent after visiting the program that it needed to be saved. “Why would you get rid of it? There is no justification for that, it is just a cost cutting exercise,” Ms Plibersek said. Youth Connections has been particularly successful in getting disengaged youth back to school and work. “I am concerned that we are condemning young people to a lifetime of unemployment if we don’t get it right early on.” Ms Plibersek said the funding cut had gone under the radar because health and education cuts had received the bulk of the attention.
“A program like Youth Connections has helped thousands but most are disadvantaged and don’t have the same strong representation in the public debate,” she said. “This issue has not had nearly as much attention as it should have.” Ms Plibersek said that with a regional youth unemployment rate of almost 21 per cent, the program played an important role in the region. “You have one in five young people out of work. How will punishing them help them magically find jobs that don’t exist? “The government is closing off every avenue, reducing TAFE funding and making university less affordable for ordinary families.” Ms Plibersek said the closure of major manufacturing operations in Geelong had also closed off a valuable source of entry level jobs for young people. She said lack of employment opportunities could see a rise in anti-social behaviour. “The community has to rally around this program because it would be a tragedy to lose it.”
ENGAGING: Corio MP Richard Marles, Labor candidate for Geelong Christine Couzens and deputy opposition leader Tanya Plibersek meet Youth Connections participants.
Local GPs put the case: Don’t change our after-hours doctors system FINDING a doctor after hours could become tougher in Geelong if the Australian Medical Association has its way, say local GPs. Barwon Medicare Local has told a Federal Government review the afterhours GP system operating across Geelong has boosted doctor visits from patients who might otherwise have gone to an emergency department seeking treatment. The AMA has told the review it wants a return to a previous system – called the Practice Incentive Program (PIP) – labelling the shift by the previous government
of after-hours funding to Medicare Local a “big mistake”. “It created a clumsy new layer of bureaucracy with Medicare Locals responsible for channelling the funding to after hours service providers,” AMA president Associate Professor Brian Owler said. “Many Medicare Locals failed to work with general practice to support high quality and accessible after hours services for patients. There was increased red tape and compliance costs for general practices, and there is no evidence of greater efficiencies.” However, Barwon ML has argued in its review submission the PIP model did “not adequately support or require gen-
eral practice to provide “accessible, extended opening” after hours. “The current level of funding does not really reflect the ongoing operating costs for general practice to provide extended opening hours, such as nursing and reception support,” it stated. “After-hours GP service in the Barwon region acknowledges that different models were needed across Geelong and district. These were shaped according to factors such as socio-economic status, availability of GPs, demand and medical deputising services.” Barwon ML chief Jason Trethowan told the Independent the AMA appeared to view Medicare Local as a “bureaucra-
cy not in touch with GPs”. “But we absolutely are in this region,” he said. “To suggest we undo the last two to three years of consultations between GPs and hospitals and patients to get a fairer system would be a lot of wasted money. We now have more services and a lot more transparency.” Barwon ML’s submission said patient presentations in primary care after hours increased over the past 12 months with 162,956 consultations provided. “These essentially may have otherwise presented to an emergency department,” it stated. The role of the GP and general prac-
tice in after-hours medical services was “extremely important” and played a “central role” in providing accessible, effective care and cutting the burden on EDs. “Barwon Medicare Local feels that at a regional level our model is working well and providing access to effective primary care services in all areas of our region,” Mr Trethowan said. He stressed Barwon Medicare Local did not have issues with the AMA but said it was “fairly powerful” in influencing government and did not want the Federal Government to think its submission was representative of how afterhours services work in Geelong.

SLIPPERY: A lowland copperhead snake.
Warming days means snakes By PAUL MILLAR LIKE the annual opening of the dusty barbecue at the first sign of warmth, snakes have aroused from their winter slumber. Local snake-catcher Darren Keiller said he had been called to relocate two snakes almost as soon as the temperature started to rise. Victoria had its warmest day in months on Tuesday with the scale climbing above the mid-20s and almost immediately the veteran snake catcher was receiving calls. “I had a busy year last year and don’t expect it to be any different this year,” Mr Keiller said. “The Torquay and Lara areas usually provide me with a lot of work, mostly copperheads and tiger snakes.” However, his first calls this week were from concerned property owners at Anakie and Mount
Duneed after they spotted tiger snakes. The snake catcher removed them and relocated them five kilometres away. He has never been bitten in 15 years on the job but knows just how dangerous the reptiles can be. His advice is simple, “watch where you walk and what you touch”. Dr Jeff Cave, veterinary officer for the Department of Environment and Primary Industries warned property owners to be particularly wary of bites to livestock, especially horses. “The severity of effects of snake bite depend on the size and species of the snake, the period since the snake had last bitten prey or time after hibernation, the size of the bitten animal and the location of the bite,” Dr Cave said. There are a number of clinical
signs that frequently occur, but can be inconsistent and variable. “Animals bitten by tiger snakes often develop muscular tremors, sweating and a staggered gait, and may become unable to swallow and dribble saliva due to paralysis of the tongue,” the vet said. “Brown snakes often cause a period of increased activity by the victim, followed by sudden flaccid collapse; horses may fall forward landing on their knees. “From there they collapse, have trouble breathing and can pass away from respiratory failure.” If an animal receives a small dose of venom it may recover after an illness of one to five days. Snake bite can be difficult to diagnose at post-mortem since the small puncture wounds and local swelling are difficult to find in a large animal.

ON YOUR BIKE: The Kids Plus cycling team.
Road trip tests riders for kids FIFTEEN determined cyclists are pedalling the gruelling 825 kilometres from Adelaide to Geelong in the fifth annual Tour 4 Kids Plus bike ride, in aid of local charity Kids Plus Foundation. The riders will be welcomed home today after the six day ride by friends, family and supporters. Lead rider, Tony Peach said the team had been spurred on by widespread support. “We are doing this both for the challenge and to raise money for some very special kids,” he said. In 2013 we raised over $30,000 and with the community’s assistance we’re aiming to top that and make 2014 the best year yet.” This year’s team of 11 men and four women has many returning riders including the father of
a child currently receiving Kids Plus therapy services. Joining the team for the last 20 kilometres each day will be 24-year-old Ben Cardinal, who has cerebral palsy and for many years was a regular face at Kids Plus. As an eight-year-old Ben learnt to ride a bike with the help of Kids Plus. Kids Plus clinical manager, Sarah Foley said generous sponsorship supported the ride, including Ford providing a support vehicle. “Kids Plus Foundation depends on the support and generosity from our community to be able to provide this essential service. “We are indebted to wonderful people like these who choose to support Kids Plus through this
amazing ride and bring so many others along with them in the process.” Kids Plus is a registered local charity providing over 3600 hours of early intervention therapy each year, at no cost to families, for babies and children with cerebral palsy and other similar physical disabilities in our region. Cerebral palsy is the most common physical disability in Australia. The Kids Plus Therapy Program focuses on helping children achieve the daily functional activities others take for granted: walking, talking, eating and drinking independently. Kids Plus relies heavily on fundraising. All funds raised go to providing specialised therapy support to local kids in great need of assistance. More information is at kidsplus.org.au.

Letters Fracking is cracked FRACKING is a new term for an old process. It is short for fracturing or cracking ore to get at the value in it. It was used in America for gold and silver by using explosives – a highly dangerous thing. In Australia they propose to crack the rock with hydraulic pressure – an expensive and problematic process. It is impossible to predict which way a crack will go. In addition oil is lighter than water and will rise to the surface. Look at the site of the Lake Wellington oil drilling company or Lakes Entrance oil company. Anyone contemplating fracking must have rocks in their head. JP McLarty Ocean Grove
Fracking passion I ATTENDED the recent community forum on coal seam gas exploration known as fracking. It was very enlightening and the community showed great passion and concern about this controversial practice. As I said on the night, the Napthine Government has introduced a moratorium on fracking until 1 July 2015 and has engaged in a community consultation process to gauge views on this important environmental and health issue. By comparison, when Labor was in government, they issued 73 exploration licences and 23 permits to allow fracking without any community consultation. So the record shows that only the Napthine Liberals want to gain a comprehensive understanding of the issues and listen to the views of the community. For more information go to naturalgasinfo.vic. gov.au. Paula Kontelj Liberal candidate for Geelong
Sporting prowess AS OUR politicians fight for the headlines by outbidding one another with funding ‘promises’ in the lead-up to the November election, it’s worth noting some facts regarding Geelong’s political football, Simonds Stadium, and some crowd and sporting history. In the 1950s it was not uncommon for Kardinia
QUESTIONS: Portarlington’s Ann Nichol House.
Aged care questions THE ANN Nichol House aged care facility at Portarlington was built in the 1990s with $700,000 raised by the community on leased Crown land. Last week Bellarine Community Health (BCH) bought the land and 60 bed facility for $1.6 million (plus GST), then next day sold it to a private operator, Arcare, for $(undisclosed) which says it will extend it to a 100 bed facility in the future. Last year Coorabin nursing home in nearby Point Lonsdale was closed by BCH, weeks before Arcare opened a new 90 bed home there. Denis and your government, this is not the way to treat a community-provided facility using secret and shifty methods. Some of the 67 staff may be re-employed, the original community raised funds will probably be lost and your credibility is once again under question. I thought you were genuine. We will remember in November. S and D Roberts Newcomb Park to host crowds in excess of 30,000. The football attendance record was broken in 1952 when 49,107 people packed in to see Geelong defeat Carlton on the Saturday afternoon of 30 August in the last home-and-away round of that year.

The Cats then went on to add to its 1951 premiership victory by beating Collingwood in the 1952 grand final. Thousands of people attended the fifth annual Athletic and Cycling Carnival held by the Geelong Footballers’ Athletic Club over three days at Kardinia Park in January of 1953. Olympic champion runner Herb McKenley from Jamaica was the major drawcard, but not far behind in drawing power were several local athletes. Geelong’s cycling star Olympian Russell Mockridge won a special match race against another Olympian in Lionel Cox. Giant Geelong distance runner John Barmby – who later went on to hold the Australasian professional record mile time – won the 880 yard handicap event. Barmby went on to win a record nine consecutive distance races. Barmby repeated his success in 1954 while Geelong footballer and dual premiership player Bert Worner won the Geelong City Gift. Incidentally it was John Barmby’s father Sam Barmby who trained 1937 Geelong premiership footballer Jack Grant to win the 1938 Stawell Easter Gift, the only Geelong winner of this prestigious event. Peter Cowden Clifton Springs
Dumb politics LABOR’S recent threat to rip up the contract to build the eastern section of the East West Link is dumb politics. It will result in a $3 billion black hole in the State’s budget, so rather than free up dollars for other projects as Labor suggests, the action will actually cost the state and Geelong/Melbourne commuters will have no relief from traffic congestion for years to come. Victoria’s budget is presently forecasting a surplus of $1.3 billion in 2014-15. Refunds to the Commonwealth Government and contract termination costs, payable in 2014-15, would send the budget into significant deficit. The decision to tear up the East West contract would leave Victoria with a damaged budget, lost job opportunities and a ruined reputation that sends the message that Victoria is closed for business. Running off the rails at Avalon THE Liberal State Government has broken its promises to deliver the key infrastructure rail link Avalon Airport needs to become an international airport. In a cynical bid to offset criticism of its broken 2010 election promise to build the rail link – as the 2014 election looms large – the State Government last week announced a preferred alignment for the rail link. But the announcement throws into sharp relief the woes faced by Avalon Airport. The aspirations of Avalon becoming an international airport are no nearer reality than they were before the Liberals assumed power in Spring Street in 2010. The reality is that 800 Qantas maintenance jobs are gone, flights to Brisbane have stopped and Geelong patronage is down from 60 to 20 per cent of total passenger traffic. The $50 million rail link has never been seriously pursued by the government. And the latest effort to proffer a hopelessly-overdue rail link alignment was pure self-interest politics. Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder would have Geelong believe the Avalon rail link will support the development of Avalon Airport “as Victoria’s second international airport and provide connections to Melbourne and Geelong”. Great in theory but the question is when? It wasn’t this term. Might it be next term? Remarkably, Aviation Industry Minister Gordon Rich-Phillips said the rail link alignment was “a further show of faith in the future of Avalon Airport by the Coalition Government”. Who does he think he’s kidding, other than those select media outlets who readily publish the Government’s propaganda ahead of its release to other media outlets? Premier Denis Napthine claims the non-existent rail plan complements the Liberal Government’s decision to build a rail link to Melbourne Airport. Sorry, how does boosting Tullamarine help Avalon? It’s fooling no-one. Well, almost no-one. – NOEL MURPHY

Dyson’s sound heading home GUITARIST-SINGER Mia Dyson is powering from strength to strength with her album Idyllwild scoring Double J’s feature album, a premiere on US industry bible Billboard, multiple four-star reviews and airplay for its single When We’re Older. Dyson is heading homewards, playing Bellarine’s Harvester Moon as part of a national tour for the album and unveiling its second single, Idyllwild. Idyllwild follows on from Dyson’s acclaimed album The Moment, which led to an ARIA nomination and complete reinvention of her career. It focuses prominently on the grey-area between youth and fully fledged adulthood. From her 2003 debut Cold Water, Dyson has impressed audiences around the country with three albums leading to national airplay via triple j and opening slots for the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Chris Isaak, Joe Cocker, Stevie Nicks and Donavon Frankenreiter. Moving to the US in 2010, Dyson started again, playing everything from cafes to pubs, building a new career in the world’s biggest music market and re-crafting her sound. This led to The Moment in 2012 and its big single When The Moment Comes which achieved ad placements on both sides of the Pacific and landed spots as the US Premier League theme as well as TV placement on network favourites including Elementary, Bones and Hart of Dixie. THE release of Idyllwild’s title track as the album’s second single takes the new album’s narrative forward even further, tipping its hat to a small town
outside of Los Angeles where Dyson spent an unconventional “honeymoon”. “I got hitched not that long ago at the Los Angeles county courthouse and afterwards, we found ourselves driving up into the mountains to this little town called Idyllwild, sort of laying our decision out there and celebrating in the natural world. “It was a surreal, utopian journey and out of it came this frenetic, high-spirited song, stylistically influenced by bands from my ’80s childhood like Elvis Costello and Talking Heads.” Mia will be supported by Bellarine duo Murdena – Annie-Rose and Hugh Moloney – with their special brand of up tempo, original, alt country sound. Mia Dyson: Harvester Moon, Thursday 9 October.
NOT IDLE: Mia Dyson performs locally next month.

KINSHIP: Geelong gets a taste of The Kin.
Brotherly love drives The Kin By NOEL MURPHY CHECK this for a list of musical character references to propel a band on its journey. It’s, well ... it’s kind of stellar. “The Kin The UPside Genre: Rock Australian brothers Thorry and Isaac Koren decided to record in Los Angeles to capture the soaring melodies and atmospheric sounds for their third album. Producer Jack Douglas, who has worked with Aerosmith, John Lennon and The Who, teamed up with the duo.” – Edna Gunderson, USA Today. “The Kin, a locally based rock group, is led by two Australianborn brothers who write bombastic pop loosely reminiscent of INXS.” – The New York Times. “We’ve touted The Kin as one of our favorite live acts ever. They even landed in our ‘Top 15 Albums of 2007’ list. These two Australian brothers know how to rock.” – SFist. “The most promising independent rock band in New York." – Good Day New York (Fox).
“Pulsating guitars and gliding strings tie together the simple, serene works of ‘Blue on Blue,’ leaving an elegant melodic tap dance in the brain. A refreshing sound, the song hints at nostalgic folk, while bearing an overall alternative bent. Wholly promising.” – Billboard. “The Kin blends the atmospheric musical wave of old school U2 and groove pop sensibilities of Duran Duran with the vocal soul of Jeff Buckley. The Kin juxtapose dark melodies with catchy hooks and solid musicianship, garnering comparisons to everything from the Cure to Coldplay.” – BMI Starting to get the drift? The Kin is a firm favourite with audiences, given their unique New York/Aussie blend and a dedication to live shows. Traversing the country through October, with faves from recent EP Get On It, earlier albums and some new tunes, they’re headed Geelong’s way, pencilled in for Beavs Bar on Friday 24 October.
The Kin comprises Australian-raised brothers Isaac (vocals, keys) and Thorald Koren (vocals, guitar, keys), and USborn Shakerleg (drums, percussion). They’ve enraptured audiences worldwide with their powerful harmonies, hard-driving guitar and percussion and stage presence. They’ve had a busy year, supporting P!NK, a headlining tour over 33 cities across North America and a special one-off support for Coldplay at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre. Described as masters of the gritty, propulsive rock sound, they’re also known for signature ‘musical robberies’ where they burst into spontaneous live performances in high-traffic public areas. In their line of sight to date have been a French airport, US diners, the Sundance Film Festival and LA bars. Can Geelong expect something similar? Seems a fair expectation.
Top local acts named for festival By NOEL MURPHY QUEENSCLIFF Music Festival will feature a string of top Geelong region performers when it fires up late in November. Acts joining the QMF’s already-extensive list will include Murdena, Yirrmal and the Yolngu Boys, Residual, The Kite Machine, Bec Goring and the Ellwood Winters and Aine Tyrrell. Also taking to the prestigious festival’s stages will be Sagamore, Jordan Riddle, Alister Turrill, Max Rudd Band, Georgia Rodgers, and Tides of Welcome. The festival, scheduled for November 28 to 30, will this year also showcase five of the top names from the Telstra Road to Discovery competition, the QMF Comedy Show line up as well as more new Victorian acts. The Road to Discovery showcase will feature Helen Shanahan,

Graduates are prepared via a concentrated course – the equivalent contact hours of a four-year university course, delivered in three years. Training for those who care KARINGAL Training offers a dual Certificate III in Aged Care and Home and Community Care for people passionate about providing personal, physical and emotional support to those with disability and the growing aged community. The dual Certificate III in Aged Care and Home and Community Care qualifications provide an entry point along with the practical skills, knowledge and confidence needed to provide care and support for the elderly and disabled in their homes or within residential care facilities. Tony Quinn, a student who recently completed the dual certificate with Karingal Training, recalls how it literally changed his life at age 45. “I look forward to waking up and going to work every morning,” said Mr Quinn, formerly a production manager with Steggles. “I feel like I have a sense of purpose by contributing and helping people each day, it’s uplifting and good for the soul.” After completing a placement as part of his training, Mr Quinn was offered a position and is employed full time with low-level permanent and respite care provider, Tannoch Brae.
Tony Quinn with Karingal aged care training coordinator, Fiona De Vries. Karingal Training manager Brett Cassar says the course is particularly suited to those entering the industry or gaining a qualification to formalise their practical skills. “Many students who completed their placement with us are now employed, which is great for the industry,” he said. Torquay Tinting’s Vinnie Tabacco.
Spring into tinting and save “More importantly, it also helps prevent ageing and skin cancer, which is vital for every member of your family, including your treasured pets.” Vinnie has been providing Surf Coast, Bellarine Peninsula and Geelong home and business owners with top-standard tinting services for 15 years. “After going over the job I narrow down which facets are most important to the client, whether it’s to reject heat, reduce glare, improve comfort, health, safety, privacy or fading of interiors,” he says. “I advise people honestly for the best possible solution and en-
sure very high standards.” Vinnie says testimonials on his website demonstrate how clients are pleased with his effective and affordable products. “Tinting will transform the beauty of your home,” he says. Vinnie is also a registered building practitioner whose positive approach toward helping the environment and improving the energy rating of clients’ homes helped him win a CSIRO Passive Solar Award. TORQUAY Tinting’s Vincenzo ‘Vinnie’ Tabacco says now is a good time to consider tinting. So get in early and gain immediate benefit early in spring at the start of the warmer season, immediately minimising heat and glare discomfort. Tinting keeps homes cooler in summer and provides many other cost-cutting environmental benefits. Vinnie says tinting ensures glare-free comfort year round. “You immediately start saving the money you spend on tinting because you rely far less on air-conditioning on hot days and reduce the fading of furnishings.

WINDOW tinting makes cars look cool but Tintmaster can give many more reasons why it’s worth tinting with unique Ultra-Carbon film, the highest performance product on the market. First, it keeps the interior cooler, especially in summer. Tinting protects occupants from harmful UVA rays, which can cause skin cancer and premature ageing, and also helps block UV rays that can lead to cracking and facing of vehicles’ interior surfaces. Window tinting film helps hold shattered glass together in the event of an accident so it doesn’t smash all over occupants’ faces. Tinting also removes glare from the Sun and other headlights, reducing the chances of accidents. Burglary risks are also reduced because tinting decreases the visibility of contents inside cars, such as mobile phones or other valuables. Air-conditioning is cheaper to run because it doesn’t have to work so hard with Tintmaster tint, meaning reduced load on the engine for improved fuel economy. However, installation is critical to window tinting and Tintmaster is expert in applying its products to all models of cars. Staff undertake thorough training and stay up to date with changes in tinting techniques and technologies. Tinting with Tintmaster usually costs between $250 and $500 and takes around half a day. Whether its black windows for great looks or achieving maximum heat and UV protection, Tintmaster has the solution to any tinting requirement. Meeting individual requirements is a specialty of the company, with prospective clients always welcome to talk to the staff about the best window tint job for any car. Tintmaster has been servicing the Geelong area for 11 years.

Bimmer sets eyes bulging By EWAN KENNEDY THE BMW M4 looks great, goes like a rocket, sounds the part and has brakes that make the eyes bulge forwards when fully applied. The M4 coupe has a sleek rear end and a low-slung look that grabbed plenty of attention during the just completed week of road testing. The lower area of the front is extremely complex, which looks great, but the repair bills would be high if it touched a kerb. BMW is one of the many European makes that have parking sensors at the front that don’t work unless they are turned on manually, thus increasing the chances of the aforementioned bills. The long sculpted bonnet has a power bulge that gives it a purposeful look and the rear spoiler is particularly well integrated into the boot lid. The roof of the BMW M4 follows the lead of the M3 coupe in being made from lightweight carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) to reduces the centre of gravity and further enhance road grip. They were in black and provide an eye-catching contrast to the deep red body colour on the test car. A glass sunroof is available as a no-cost option. The M4 coupe weighs about 60 kilograms less than the previous M3 coupe thanks to clever engineering and the use of added aluminium. BMW has moved from a naturally aspirated V8 engine in the previous model (M3 coupe) to turbocharged straight-six in the M4 coupe. The six generates an impressive 317kW of power and 550Nm of torque from just 3.0 litres. That’s well above the output of the 4.0-litre V8 (309kW / 400Nm). Transmission options are seven-speed M double-clutch automatic or the no-cost option of an upgraded six-speed manual. In a sign of the times, the manual is available only on special order. The BMW M4 comes with six airbags, enhanced braking systems and dynamic stability control. However there is an extra charge for some items that cheap-
Complex frontal styling, bonnet power bulge, sleek roof, brilliant engine… the new BMW M4 coupe has it all. er cars provide as standard. The option list includes Lane Change and Blind Spot Warning ($1000), Head-Up Display ($1700), Tyre Pressure Warning ($550) and Parking Assistant ($675). The impressive BMW Connected Drive electronic system includes Intelligent Emergency Call which transmits vehicle crash information to a BMW call centre from where emergency service are alerted if required. Similarly, TeleServices transmits breakdown information if the driver gets really stuck. BMW M4 uses a widescreen high-resolution 8.8-inch colour display that includes satellite navigation. There’s a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound set-up, digital radio, DVD drive, on-board computer with 20 Gb hard drive, USB and aux sockets and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming. The front sports seats are firm but reasonably comfortable, their adjustable side bolsters make it suitable for differing widths of backside from the slim to the extensive. Access to the M4’s rear seats through the front doors is reasonably easy. There are only two seats back there, with a small stowage bin between them. Legroom is limited and the seats are better suited to children than grown-ups. Headroom is better than would be expected and the M4 can cope with six-footers with a little to spare. The BMW M4 has a surprisingly large boot at 445 litres. It’s reasonably easy to load but goes forward a long way, which can be a hassle at times.
Using launch control, the zero to 100km/h acceleration is 4.1 seconds with the automatic transmission and 4.3 seconds with the manual. Acceleration is almost instantaneous, with the twin turbos combining to eliminate most turbo lag. The lag can be felt at low revs and speeds but once the engine is up into the interesting areas it’s a real stunner to sit behind, offering fast response and superb sound. The steering, which is now electro-mechanical, suspension and engine each have a choice of three settings which really add to the driving enjoyment. The new M4 officially uses just 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined driving cycle. In real life we found it using 11 to 13 litres per 100 kilometres under reasonably sensible driving, climbing past 15 litres per 100 when going hard. Open road and motoring driving did bring it way down - to eight to nine litres per 100 kilometres. One test drive of this new BMW M4 is likely to hook most people in a big way. The engine sounds great, the suspension and steering talk to the driver and if it doesn’t leave a smile on their face then they weren’t trying hard enough. Add styling that’s pretty radical and they will be happy to dip into their bank account to the tune of $166,430. Model range M4 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol twodoor coupe: $166,430 (manual and automatic).

IndySport Geelong sharks Victorian title By JARROD POTTER IT’S NOT over until the final whistle, as Hockey Geelong showed in its come-from-behind 5-4 Vic League 1 grand final win over the Casey Cannons. The Cannons earned the lead through the second half at the State Netball Hockey Centre on Sunday – taking the margin to 4-2 with 11 minutes left in regulation time – but a Geelong fight back turned the tables to earn the cup via Will Jackson’s last minute goal. Geelong opened its account early through Mack Dolenc and Greg Hutchison before Casey struck back to equal the score at 2-2. That’s how it would remain at the half as both the Cannons and Sharks threatened but failed to seize their chances in front of the net. A pair of strong saves from Casey keeper Adam Wadley and some equally impressive work from Geelong’s aptly named keeper Ben Champion kept the deadlock in place. The mayhem started in earnest after the resumption as Casey’s Matt Guastella struck from a goalmouth scramble and backed
it up with his second to push the gap out to two goals with 11 minutes remaining. Geelong worked its way back into the clash as goals to Mark Hanley and Jackson’s first levelled the scores, leaving a tense three minutes on the clock to see who would claim the premiership. In the last minute, a scrambled flick on the goal-line from Jackson hit the net and to give the Sharks the Vic League 1 premiership and back-to-back premierships. “Something they’ve shown all year is their ability to really fight out a game and so I knew they’d keep on giving it everything they had until the absolute end,” Geelong coach Andrew Smith said. “Sometimes those games and those things go your way and sometimes they don’t and today was just a day that ended up great for us. “It’s just an amazing effort by the guys and is really exciting for what lies ahead. The challenge will be for us to get that promotion into Premier League next year.”
Hockey Geelong celebrates its Vic League 1 premiership victory over Casey Cannons. In no particular order: Jason Bingham, Lewis Carr, Ben Champion, Matt Cherry, Fergus Dawson, Mack Dolenc, Grant Downie, Dan Hale, Mark Hanley, Greg Hutchison, Mark Jackson, Will Jackson, Luke Picture: JARROD POTTER Kelly, Ryan Parry, Andrew Taylor, Scott Walters and coach Andrew Smith. 127780

WITH excellent conditions over the weekend anglers made the most of Corio Bay. Pinkie snapper once again made their presence felt with fish holding around the Geelong Yacht Club and Western Beach moorings. Those fishing the rocks off Limburner’s boat ramp have seen King George whiting to 35cm taken; pippie has been the bait of choice. Inside the Grammar School Lagoon bream and pinkies have been taken on soft plastics; casting your lure right up under the moored boats has been the key. Clifton Springs produced fantastic squid over the last week.
Warriors seal league runners up By JOSIP ZILIC WITH the final round of the National Premier League coming up on Sunday, North Geelong Warriors will face off against bottom side Brunswick having wrapped up the runners up spot. Brunswick hasn’t had the results it hoped for in its inaugural NPL1 season, openly opting for a youthful side to build through a three year journey. Regardless Brunswick does have a knack of frustrating teams with recent close encounters against St Albans and Bendigo attesting to that. The Warriors had the opportunity to close the gap on league leader Avondale to three points last week, but weren’t up their season’s best, beaten 2-1 by Richmond. The result ensured Avondale Heights secured the title with an unassailable lead going into the final round.
North Geelong had the better opportunities in the opening minutes with Michael Anderson blasting one over the bar from range on 10 minutes and Juso Julardzija soon after almost sneaking a goal past Christian Rossi, hitting the post. Richmond opened the scoring just one minute before the break, Tom Cahill making the Warriors’ defence pay for a drop in concentration when he got onto the end of a through ball and advanced Michael Grgic and Matt Townley to drill it past Daniel Zilic. In the second half the Warriors were visibly lacking in contests, allowing Richmond to sustain pressure utilising Geelong born Richmond winger Ryan Opperman who twice came close in one-on-one duels with Zilic, the keeper holding firm. Richmond tested the resolve of North Geelong’s defence and in the 70th minute Grgic gave away a free kick just outside the
area. Cahill, noticing Zilic arranging his wall, took the initiative to catch him unaware and rounded the keeper to net his second. North Geelong finally lifted through youthful substitutes Matija Dragovic and Nikola Jurkovic getting involved in lead up play. The Warriors got on the board in the 88th minute when Nathan Long followed through on a square ball in the box and slammed it home, creating a tense final few minutes. North Geelong coach Micky Colina credited Richmond for a well-deserved win. “We had a good opening but we drifted out of the game and Richmond punished us, possibly a little promotion hangover,” Colina said. “After pulling off a great achievement in securing promotion, some struggled to get their heads around another big game it showed.”

The grass beds next to the long broken pier held squid to 1kg with the Yamashita King George whiting squid jig in size 2.5 the most productive. The spoil ground out from Sands caravan park has pike and pinkies in reasonable numbers. As the year goes on we can expect to see pike reach almost one metre. Queenscliff has seen large squid to 2.5kg taken over at the bight. Larger jigs such as size 3.5 have been more effective especially when worked with an aggressive action. Whiting are still being taking on the grass beds on a run out tide and tenderized squid as bait has been doing the trick. Inside the harbour squid are being caught among the boats where 2.5 sized jigs are the go as the water is less than one metre deep. Over the weekend Geoff and Ali Smith headed out off shore from the Surf Coast in kayaks, trolling lures and finding pike to 80cm.
The Barwon estuary is full of smaller Australian salmon and King George whiting, suckers for pippie and prawn baits. Anywhere along the Sheepwash Rd section both species have been taken. If you’re looking for a place to take the kids for a fish this school holidays then the Barwon River is a great option. Just recently Lake St Augustines in Waurn Ponds was stocked with 800 rainbow trout for the school holidays. Fishing pink power bait on a running sinker rig is a great method to catch these feisty fish. Otherwise casting small hardbody lures will see the kids connected to a fish or two. Those looking for options over the next week should consider chasing squid at Queenscliff and or the whiting over at St Leonards with work all finished at the boat ramp. Clifton Springs should have snapper along the channel and fishing the tide change should see the fish come on the bite.
