IT’S a chance to kick up your heels, or work boots - all in the name of a good cause. Support group Yarra Valley Opals, with the help of Mount Evelyn hairdresser Alison Wright is holding a fund-raising night to extend and replenish their wig library. The wigs are available to cancer sufferers to borrow for the time they need it until their hair grows back. It doesn’t cost these women to borrow the wigs, and Ms Wright says they have a number of people keen on borrowing them. “The wigs are roughly worth $500-$600 each,” she said. “So we’re hoping to raise enough money to buy a few wigs to add to the library.” She said that some women borrowed the wigs for the length of their treatment while others just borrow them for special occasions. A silent auction including sports memorabilia, jewellery, hampers and vouchers will be held on the night. Online bids can be made on the Yarra Valley WIG Library facebook page until midnight Monday 13 October. Local artists will perform at the family friendly event with a sausage sizzle cooking throughout the night as well as face painting, fairy floss and cakes. Ex-Footballer Brodie Holland will also attend the night. The Girls/Boys night in will be held on Tuesday 14 October at Aliandra’s Hair and Beauty, 55 Wray Crescent, Mount Evelyn between 4pm and 8pm. From 8pm a skincare information event will be held. –Melissa Meehan

MELBA Support services will move their adult training support to the former Swinburne campus in Lilydale. The not-for-profit organisation supporting people with disabilities, today (Tuesday) announced it was relocating from Ormeau Road, Mount Evelyn. But Melba chief executive Glenn Foard said there would still be a strong presence in Mount Evelyn, in three locations including their Wray Crescent shopfront. He said Melba would still be a part of the Mount Evelyn Chamber of Commerce and METIC too. “We are grateful to Swinburne University for making one of the buildings on the campus available for our use,” Mr Foard said. “It is a perfect location and a great building. The building is accessible for people who use wheelchairs and has sufficient space to meet the needs of people we support.” Melba provides training to adults with disabilities, focusing on pre-vocational and vocational skills, communication, literacy, numeracy and daily living skills. Melba programs fall within the current ‘‘public useeducation’’ zoning for the Lilydale site. Under the terms of the agreement, Melba will rent the building from Swinburne. “This new location will enable us to expand our capacity and meet the local need for our training services,” Mr Foard said. “People using our services will benefit from being closer to public transport and community facilities. “We want to remain part of the Mount Evelyn community, but we also want to play a greater role in the Lilydale community and service the entire Shire of Yarra Ranges. “We are looking forward to building relationships with businesses, the Lilydale High School and local community groups.” Mr Foard said Melba would work collaboratively with any other services or organisations that might relocate to the campus in the future. He said the current property where Melba resided highlighted a number of safety issues including bushfire and falling trees. A buyer for the site is currently in discussions with Melba. Swinburne Vice Chancellor, Professor Linda Kristjanson, said Melba Support Services’ move to the site was in line with the university’s commitment to creating a positive future for the former campus. “In considering the future of Lilydale, we have been guided by the principle that we want the site returned to productive use. The work of Melba Support Services clearly meets that principle.’’ Melba Support Services will gradually start moving into their new home next month. The Swinburne Lilydale campus closed on 1 July last year.

TOM Hoogenbosch knows only too well the tragic effects of cancer and is doing his bit to stop others having the same experience in the future. The Kallista property developer and builder has already raised more than $14,000 - and counting - ahead of his second participation in the annual Ride to Conquer Cancer on 25 and 26 October. The money goes towards the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the only public hospital in Australia solely dedicated to cancer. Mr Hoogenbosch’s fundraising effort places him second behind only Andy Bartal ($17,500) among participants and his Edgepoint Homes team has raised almost $35,000, which is the fifth-most. “I have a PA who’s been working very hard at it, so I can’t take all the credit, Mr Hoogenbosch said. “She’s really doing a great job and, realistically, it’s a team effort - everyone’s putting in on it. “We’ve gone to our suppliers and so forth and said, ‘listen, we want you to be on board’ and most of them have come on board, which is really good. Mr Hoogenbosch’s father, Hans, died of prostate cancer six years ago and his wife, Karen, is in remission after battling skin cancer. The Ride to Conquer Cancer is a 200 kilometre event across two days from Melbourne through the Mornington Peninsula, taking in picturesque vineyards, nature reserves and

Mr Hoogenbosch, 56, said he and his team mates aim to ride 100km each weekend in preparation. “It’s not a race, it’s a ride, and we get a lot of support from the ride association itself, he said. “It’s easy when you’ve got 25km and you’ve got a feed station, where you can sit and have something to eat and so on. “Last year it took me fourand-a-half hours (each day) to do it, but some people take all day. Mr Hoogenbosch said the team hoped to raise $40,000 more than $10,000 more than its initial goal - by the end of

the two-day event. “It’s for a good cause, so that’s why we set up a team this year, he said. “We have quite a few riders in there who are all putting in and we’ll all work together to try to get to the end and raise some money for Peter Mac. The team comprises some of Mr Hoogenbosch’s colleagues, associates and friends and has two major sponsors, Jeep and AHG. Brace for bargains By MARC McGOWAN BARGAIN-HUNTERS should circle 4 October on the calendar. Morrison Men’s Shed is set to host what is being billed as “one of the biggest garage sales people have ever seen” - and president Jack Kleynjan says hagglers are welcome. “We have quite a few products we’ve made here,” Mr Kleynjan said. “There are things like wooden garden wheelbarrows that people can put plants in, bird feeders, serving trays and a few other things like that.

“But a lot of the members are also donating stuff they have at home ... whatever we are selling has virtually been donated, so whatever money we can get we’d be happy with.” Among the other items available will be computers, a vacuum cleaner and a pizza-maker still in its original packaging. Morrison Men’s Shed not only provides retirement-age men a social outlet with like-minded individuals, but also does much good for the community. “A lot of people don’t realise this, but we work only for communi-

ty organisations,” Mr Kleynjan said. “We look after about 12 childminding centres, four primary schools and one of the secondary colleges, Yarra Hills. “We do general repairs and make things like cubby houses, and by doing that for them they save a lot money, because we only charge for the materials, plus a bit of a donation.” Mr Kleynjan, 77, retired four years ago and said organisations such as Morrison Men’s Shed, which has about 40 paid members, were important. “We have guys who have had

depression and it gives them something to do here,” he said. “It makes it all worthwhile when we see the result of what we’ve made and the reaction we get from the kids. “It gives us something to do as well ... when I retired I was that bored I didn’t know what to do with myself.” The Morrison Men’s Shed garage sale is being held at Morrison Reserve, 20 Old Hereford Road, Mt Evelyn, on Saturday, 4 October and will run from 8am to about 4pm. There will be a sausage sizzle on the day.

Briefly Meth lab busted THREE men have been remanded in custody after police raided a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Mount Dandenong. The men, aged 40, 43 and 34, were arrested by Croydon Divisional Tasking Unit (DTU) officers on 24 September when a drug search warrant was executed. Each has been charged with manufacturing amphetamines and the 34-year-old man was also wanted for an incident in Healesville on 9 September. The man is believed to have crashed a car in Healesville which had a stolen trailer that had been taken from Gembrook on 2 September. In the trailer was a large amount of copper wiring, valued at $15,000. Lilydale Criminal Investigation Unit charged the man with several offences relating to the incident.

Guard robbed POLICE are appealing for information after a security guard was robbed at Lilydale Train Station earlier this month. At 9.30am, the security guard found a graffiti mural on a train and was approached by two males. The men demanded that the security guard hand over his phone and left when he had done so. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.

Tulips dance in fantasy land A WHIRL of colour brought a world of fantasy to Tesselaar’s Tulip Festival last week. This year’s theme is ‘fantasy’ and will be open until 7 October.

Pharmacy raids charges A COCKATOO man was arrested last week and faces a slew of burglary charges after raiding pharmacies in Mount Evelyn and Wandin. Yarra Ranges CIU Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said the 27-year-old man was arrested on 25 September after a number of burglaries across the outer east. Sgt Smithwick said the man was charged over burglaries on 4 August at a Wandin pharmacy and 23 July at a Mount Evelyn pharmacy, as well as burglaries on 3 July in Forest Hill, 2 July at a Neerim South pharmacy and a home in Ringwood on 4 February.

Station to stay, both parties confirm RUMOURS questioning the future of the Monbulk police station have been quashed, with both candidates confirming their plans to keep it open. Whispers and rumours have circled the town recently that the station would be closed, thanks to two super stations, in Belgrave and Em-

erald, being built. But in meetings with the Mail last week, Monbulk Labor candidate James Merlino and Monbulk Liberal candidate Mark Verschuur both confirmed their support to keep the station open. “Over my dead body,” was the response of Mr Verschuur when the rumours were put to him. “It’s very important to keep it,

it’s important to have old-fashioned policing working with the community.” He said he would fight hard to keep it open if the station came under threat of closure. Mr Merlino agreed. “I have heard rumours of the closure, “Mr Merlino said. “But there is absolutely no way

of Monbulk police station closing under a Labor government.” He said that it was important for the community of Monbulk to have a police presence with a station in town. “To have a committed team of local police in town is what this beautiful country town needs. “I won’t allow a change in that.” 1154192-RC38-14

THEY’RE brought to life, only to be slaughtered for recreation. Lions, elephants and other animals in the wild are bred into captivity only to be released into the firing line of avid hunters. Olinda resident Donalea Patman is fighting to get the Federal Government, through La Trobe MP Jason Wood, to take a stand against the canned hunting industry by tightening regulation around the importation of hunted animal trophies into Australia. “Many young Australians get caught up in this practice by being lured to gap year ‘volunteer projects’ where they unwittingly help humanise and handrear lion cubs which end up being offered to rich hunters to be killed while caged, drugged and unafraid of humans,” Ms Patman said. “They are bred for the bullet.” Ms Patman has organised a fund-raiser to be held on World Animal Day, 4 October. Mr Wood applauded Ms Patman for working hard to push her issue. “Donalea has some amazing contacts throughout the world and is really leading everyone else on this,” he said. “She’s a wealth of knowledge.” The night will be hosted by

Courses ease the tragedy By MELISSA MEEHAN IN 1995, Anthony and Travis Hall were tragically killed in a road accident in Cockatoo. At only 15 and 13 years of age respectively, both boys were in the Upwey Junior Fire Brigade. Anthony was Junior Captain at the time of the accident. The boys were the sons of the then Senior Brigade’s 1st Lieutenant Peter Hall and wife Liz. Their loss was a shock to many because they were very popular in the community and successful in brigade competitions throughout many areas of the state. A fund in memory of the boys was established in 1998 for young adults of the volunteer fire service and the greater Dandenongs community to undertake a defensive driving course. The fund is managed by prominent members of the fire service and the Dandenong Ranges community in Peter Hall, Graeme Legge, Bob Horner, Geoff Champion and Peter Marke (convenor) in conjunction with the Upwey brigade. The one-day courses are valued at $295 each. The fund received tremendous support from local fire brigades and residents and even people from the suburbs.

From Left, Cameron Horner, Dan Leslie (Murcott's Driving Excellence), Eliza Sawyer, Chris Lewis, Upwey CFA member Peter Hall, Olivia Hardwick, Mitchell Branson and Mia Ray. Picture: LIZ CLARKSON The Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group also donated funds to assist with advertising and administering the fund. “We have now raised over $20,000, with support from the Murcott’s Driving Excellence who have donated two courses every year,” Mr Hall said.

To commemorate its 19 years of operation, it has been decided to award eight courses. Four courses have been awarded to young members of the fire service and four to members of the local community. “When young people get their li-

ton (Belgrave CFA), Olivia Hardwick (from Upwey), Eliza Sawyer (Macclesfield CFA), Cameron Horner (Sassafras CFA), Mia Ray (Emerald), Christopher Lambert (Ferny Creek), Christopher Lewis (Upper Ferntree Gully CFA) and Mitchell Branson (Silvan).

By MELISSA MEEHAN A FUNDING boost to reduce road trauma in Cardinia Shire will see police blitz the hills over the next three months. Working in conjunction with the TAC, marked and unmarked police cars, as well as a police motorcycles, will enforce speed limits and road safety in the lead-up to Christmas along Belgrave-Gembrook Road and Launching Place Road as well as the main feeder roads leading to these areas. Cardinia Highway Patrol’s Leading Senior Constable Peter Henderson said the majority of motorcycle collisions have occurred in these areas on the weekends during daylight hours. The blitz began on Saturday 27 September and will run until Christmas. “There are far too many motorcycle collisions that are occurring over the weekends, particularly as the fine weather is about and a massive increase in recreational riders take to the roads to ride their bikes for leisure,” Leading Sen Const Henderson said. “Most of these riders are responsible, however some just have the attitude that they can ride as they please without regard for the road rules and safety of other motorists. “Police will be paying particularly attention to speed as well as the checking of motorcycles for roadworthiness. “In addition, they will be handing out brochures on protective clothing to encourage rid-

cence, they think they know everything about driving,” Mr Hall said. “But everyone that has done this course, they rave about it - it teaches them things they need to know, but often don’t.” The awards were presented on Thursday night to James Temple-

Casey Highway Patrol's Leading Senior Constable John Morten and Leading Senior Constable Peter Henderson. 127920 ers and their pillions to reduce the risk of injury should they be involved in a collision.” Police will also be conducting random road blocks to make sure all motorcyclists are licensed and their bikes are registered. “Tragically, a 28-year-old male was killed on his motorcycle on Pakenham Road, Mt Burnnett, on Saturday 23 August in the afternoon during fine weather,” Leading Sen Const Henderson said. “This is why we will be out there to help prevent this tragic loss of life occurring.” He said Pakenham Road was one of the feeder roads leading to the hills which operations Ridesafe 1 and Ridesafe 2 would target. “This is your warning - there won’t be any while we are on patrol.”

UPWEY resident Tammy Gear is used to carrying a heavy load. Between studying full time, working part time as a waitress and training up to eight hours a week as a volunteer firefighter, she keeps an active and busy schedule. But later this year, Tammy will face one of her biggest challenges yet when she climbs all 88 storeys of the Eureka Tower in full gear for the annual ‘Eureka Climb.’ The event is one of the highest vertical races in the world and draws participants from all over Australia. It’s open to anyone and every year the ‘Emergency Service Challenge’ is hotly contested and proves a crowd favourite. Contestants from all areas of emergency services race to the top wearing their full uniform and carrying gear. For Tammy, it’s all part of the experience of being a volunteer firefighter. “I got involved through friends and I love being a part of it. “I helped our team train last year and I really wanted to get involved. It’s such a good cause.”

Tamara Gear in her turnout gear she will run up Eureka Tower in. 127650 Tammy has been climbing the 1000 Steps in Ferntree Gully at least once a week to prepare for the event, and plans to step up her training during her upcoming university break. The event raises money for disadvantaged young people in Australia and abroad for charity partners Whitelion and Interplast. Last year’s event raised over $250,000 and Event Director Ben King says that this year the target is even higher.

“2013 was the biggest year yet for the Eureka Climb with over 2500 participants and a crowd of hundreds watching the action. “By all indications, 2014 is set to be the best year yet with registrations coming in from all over the country and overseas.” The Eureka Climb will be held on Sunday 16 November. Registration for the event is now open and climbers can register online at www.eurekaclimb.com.au.

Life’s work of support By MELISSA MEEHAN DANDENONG Ranges artist Vera Skipper has left a lasting legacy on the Belgrave Fire Brigade. Ms Skipper worked on her craft for more than 40 years, resulting in a large collection of colourful still life paintings and landscapes in pastels and oils, which she has bequeathed to the Belgrave Fire Brigade. Her collection of 60 artworks will be exhibited and sold to raise funds for the fire brigade to purchase a second tanker. Belgrave Fire Brigade veteran firefighter George Harmon said Ms Skipper’s bequest was truly wonderful. “Vera was always such an active participant in our annual art show and to honour her kind donation is a humbling experience,” he said. Contemptible colours WELL! The Libs are starting to show their real colours. The attack in the Mail (Proper Professional, 23 September) against James Merlino is absolutely beneath contempt. To attack a person or party over their political views or policies is what democracy is all about. To attack someone at a personal level and to attempt to denigrate them over their stature etc. is pathetic, childish and puerile. You could expect that sort of behaviour in a primary school playground. It is typical of the Libs to attack their opponents at a personal level without showing any substance of how they might improve the lot of the people of the electorate. It is obvious that they are getting very anxious about the upcoming election. Geoff Champion, Mount Dandenong.

Postal praise Andrea Coffey, left, and Jack Couche, right, and George Harmon, standing. 127582 said that he was pleased to exhibit the works to help out the local brigade. “The volunteer team do such great work protecting the local region and I can only hope that some of Vera’s wonderful paint-

ings find new homes,” he said. The exhibition will run from Friday 3 October through to Sunday 26 October. The official opening will be held on Sunday 5 October at 11am.

existing facilities in Cockatoo, including the Monash Health site. The council is working with Monash Health to attract additional service providers to the Monash Health site in Cockatoo. We apologise for this error.

I N V I T A T I O N

I JUST wanted to give praise to the lovely, friendly and efficient ladies at our local Emerald Post Office. They are all so welcoming and patient. They make it a pleasure to live in Emerald. I pity the poor people I see waiting in long queues when I go to other suburbs. Thanks ladies, you do a great job. John King, Emerald.

Push pool polling ONE has to wonder about the professionalism of the Yarra Ranges Council. They have released a survey to gauge public views about the future of the Olinda Pool including a range of options for the site. Their survey runs something like this - Would you like?: a) chocolate; b) vanilla; c) strawberry; d) neopolitan; e) a tub of rancid butter. Option e, of course, is the one that refers to re-opening the pool. Alas, this is a clear case of push polling - that highly dubious technique straight out of the spin doctor playbook where an organisation attempts to alter the views of citizens under the guise of conducting a poll. The council has called their website Join the

Olinda Pool Conversation. Their survey suggests this is not a ‘conversation’ or a ‘consultation’, but effectively a manipulation – one intended to bring about an outcome preferred by certain individuals within the sanctum of the shire offices. The process that has been established reflects very badly on the council and its officers. Tim Moore, Save the Olinda Pool.

Rates of pay MY CARDINIA council rate notice arrived today. The site value is $35,000 more than I paid for the property two months ago! Coincidently I have been put on notice by the council and to my great distress, now have to fight for the right to live in my modest dwelling. My question is, what proportion of my rate payment goes toward the salary/salaries of the very people threatening to put my future life and peace of mind in jeopardy? Wendy Lawrence, Cockatoo.

Short memory IN HER recent letter (The True Tafe, Mail, 23 September) local member Christine Fyffe seems to have forgotten the $1.2 billion she and her colleagues have ripped out of TAFE budgets over four years. It is these funding cuts that have brought so many TAFE campuses to their knees and forced the closure or amalgamation of several, including the sale of Swinburne Campus. To put it in perspective, the Liberals’ funding cuts slashed the hourly student contact rate from $8 to $1.50 in some cases. What disappoints me the most, however, is Ms Fyffe’s attempt to deny her role in the closure of Swinburne Lilydale TAFE. Ms Fyffe seems to have forgotten that, as our representative in parliament, she supported the changes that caused the closure of Swinburne Lilydale which means that under a Liberal Government, the sale of the site is now a real possibility. Labor has committed to re-opened TAFE and university at the Lilydale site. Peter Harris, ALP candidate for Evelyn.

Pink fit for fund-raiser By MELISSA MEEHAN CELEBRATING all things pink, the Belgrave CWA will hold a fund-raising afternoon tea on Wednesday for the Breast Cancer Network Australia. President Phyllis Jaensch said everyone was welcome to the event, which is to be held at the Belgrave CWA Hall at 1596 Burwood Highway from 1pm on Wednesday 1 October. “We are holding an afternoon tea and raising funds for breast cancer,” Ms Hartley said. “Everyone is welcome, it’s a $10 donation and all proceeds to go to breast cancer.” Ms Jaensch said the cause was close to their hearts because some members either suffered from breast cancer or knew people who have. “The idea is to highlight the cause,” she said. “We’ll have a guest speaker and members from a number of different groups will attend, too.”

Top prize for Billy bake By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM WHEN Tiffany Smith entered the novice celebration cake competition at this year’s Royal Melbourne Show, she chose to celebrate her hometown of Emerald - and she won. Tiffany, who has always loved baking but keeps it just as a hobby, created a three-tier masterpiece focussed around Puffing Billy railway. The cake is decorated entirely with coloured fondant and Tiffany said she designed and baked it in her own kitchen all in one day. On Friday 19 September she was excited by the announcement

that she had won first prize in the division. “I’ve entered competitions at the show for the last couple of years and I was delighted when I found out I had won this time. “I’d never made a cake like this one and it was fun to be able to make something that celebrates Emerald.” She also took out the first prize in the soft iced cupcakes competition and said she plans to continue to bake and decorate unique and specialised cakes. “I’ll definitely be entering the show competition again. I loved the challenge of designing a celebration cake.”

Push to drive out weeds OCTOBER will see Belgrave up in arms over weed eradication. Yarra Ranges Council, Southern Dandenong Landcare and Belgrave traders have come together to raise awareness about the impact that the spread of weeds can have on the environment. Belgrave Traders Association co-ordinator Marina Dennis said Weedbusters Month was an idea which was driven by the community. “There is a lot of interest within the community to tackle the issue of weeds in the area,” Ms Dennis said. The event takes place throughout October and features a variety of activities. “It’s about focusing the attention of the wider community to support groups who work on this issue all year around,” Ms Dennis said. Activities range from an environmental weed display to talks by Parks Victoria, story time and a papermaking workshop which deals with weeds in a more creative fashion. A town centre information table is also offered twice within

Tiffany Smith’s Puffing Billy themed cake won first prize at the Royal Melbourne Show.

the month. Ms Dennis said the information tables would feature council staff who could provide expert advice on weed removal. “Sometimes people are at a loss, some weeds just keep coming back,” Ms Dennis said. A free skip will be set up in the town’s Hayes Car Park on Sunday 19 October from 9am to 3pm. Ms Dennis said the free skip would save the community around Belgrave from having to travel to the tip and paying to get rid of weeds. “Hopefully, people will take the opportunity to get rid of the weeds around the town,” Ms Dennis said. This is the first time the event has been held on such a large scale. Ms Dennis said the group has held similar campaigns previously with the support of the council but the level of community involvement motivated members to create a month-long event. Information and dates are available on the Belgrave Vic Facebook page.

Mining deep for laughs THE Mail Newspaper Group, in partnership with Croydon Cinemas, has 100 double passes to give away to readers to see Pride in a special advanced screening. Held in Cinema 2 at 6.45pm on Wednesday 29 October, Pride has been described as a film that will raise a laugh and bring a tear. Croydon Cinemas manager George Aleksiunas said the film was a mix between Billy Elliott and the Full Monty and was sure to be a favourite with film watchers. “It’s a lot of fun,” Mr Aleksiunas said. “It’s such a feelgood movie.” The movie centres on the summer of 1984 when Margaret Thatcher is in power in the UK and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride march in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decide to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The union seems embarrassed to receive their support. But the activists are not deterred. They decide to ignore the union and go direct to the miners. They identify a mining village in deepest Wales and set off in a mini bus to make their donation in person.

And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities which form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership. To win tickets, entrants should send their name and address to the Mail Newspaper Group at 244 Maroondah Highway, Healesville, 3777, or go to the Mail Newspaper Group Facebook page and find the related post and share, comment and like it. Winners will be drawn at random and announced on Tuesday 21 October.

Soul for support NICK Seidenman, Michael Waugh and Glengollan Village’s Glengoldies will head a line-up of local talent at a concert which is being held for the benefit of Fernlea House next month. Music From the Heart for the Soul will be held at the Burrinja Cultural Centre and aims to raise money for the Emerald-based community organisation, which provides support for people who have been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness and respite for their carers. Fernlea House CEO Sharyn Turney said that funds raised from the event will support the day-to-day work of the house. “We couldn’t operate without the help of over 50 trained volunteers working with us to provide a high quality service. “The funds raised from the concert will further support our work.” Tickets are $20 and, with artists performing for free, all funds raised will go directly to Fernlea House. Music From the Heart for the Soul will be held on 12 October at Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey. The show will start at 2pm in the Black Box Theatre. For inquiries and bookings phone Fernlea House on 5968 3895.

Classics in gear for Mustang and Maserati AUSTRALIA’S premier exhibition of unique, collectible and historically significant cars and motorcycles will return to Melbourne next month. In what is tipped to be the biggest Motorclassica event yet, visitors will be able to see the latest models from iconic automotive brands including Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin and Lotus as well as motorcycles from Benelli, BMW, Indian, MV Augusta and Triumph. This year, Motorclassica will also feature the Australian International Concours d’Elegance which will be contested by an array of the world’s most fabulous, important, and valuable cars and motorcycles. There will be a collector car auction on Saturday evening. Motorclassica will celebrate 100 years of iconic Italian manufacturer Maserati and 50 years of the Ford Mustang through exhibits. There will also be a display dedicated to Australian motorsport featuring a number of unique Australian racing vehicles. The event will be held at Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building on 24-26 October. For further information or to purchase tickets, visit www.motorclassica.com.au. The Mail has 10 double passes to Motorclassica to give to readers. Naked lunches for school kids By MELISSA MEEHAN MONBULK Primary School students are getting environmentally friendly, with the school introducing naked lunches. Earlier this month, the school was donated 272 Decor lunch boxes from local manufacturer Garden City Plastics to help them ditch food wrappers for cleaner eating. The lunch boxes have a number of different compartments where kids can separate their sandwiches from yoghurt, fruit or other treats. Mat Mills from Garden City Plastics said the lunch boxes retailed for about $30 each but wanted to provide them to the school. “Our owner Graeme Wilson and his family are really proud to still be in the Monbulk community and love being able to give back,” he said. “We’ve always been part of the community, and will continue to be.” Principal Lyn Ordish said the donation of lunch boxes and mulch was fantastic for the school. “We are really trying to teach our students to be committed and aware of the environment,” she said.

Fawn’s eye on the job By JODIE SYMONDS A BELGRAVE family has adopted a four-legged friend to help the blind. Karen and Mike Sheahan adopted Fawn the puppy from Seeing Eye Dog Australia (SEDA) to train as a carer for the visually disabled. The family signed up to receive a puppy a year ago and not long after welcomed their bubbly and bouncy pooch into their lives. Their children Luke, 8, and Sally, 5, enjoy the company of Fawn because they get to learn about the fundamental responsibilities of taking care of a dog in training. Ms Sheahan said the family

had fostered dogs before but never a Seeing Eye Dog. “Fawn is a good way to teach the children about her important job to care for the blind,” she said. Ms Sheahan is repeatedly asked how their family will cope when Fawn completes her training and moves onto another family. She said while it would be difficult because they were so attached to her, their children understood Fawn would eventually have to move on to another family. Their furry friend has accompanied them on visits to parks, shopping centres and even Disney on Ice.

Caring for Fawn is a 24-hour job and Ms Sheahan said the most difficult struggle had been training her to not eat popcorn off the cinema floor. Each Seeing Eye Dog costs approximately $35,000 to train, however these costs are all covered by SEDA. Volunteers will receive their puppy at about eight weeks of age and train them until 12 months. “SEDA have been a great support and we really encourage others to do the same,” Ms Sheahan said. For more information on volunteering for a Seeing Eye Dog, visit http://seda.visionaustralia.org/.

I’D LIKE to congratulate the 2014 Maria SS Annuniziata Festa Committee in organising their 15th festa for St Mary’s Parish in Mount Evelyn which was held on Sunday 21 September 2014. The festa was a showcase of all things Italian from dancing competitions to spaghetti eating with free entertainment for the children. I personally congratulate the committee for providing such a wonderful self sustainable event for its parish and the wider Mount Evelyn Community for 15 continuous years. The festa was steeped in Italian tradition of honouring the Madonna. The procession where the Madonna was carried from the Church to the Festa was celebrated by the Bellini Band playing traditional Italian music. The congregation received blessings from Father Ashkar. Then the real business of eating Italian food began and did not finish until after the amazing fireworks had finished. I’m sure everyone who attended would agree that the festa was a fantastic event. Congratulations again to the organising committee for all of your efforts. Cr Maria McCarthy, Deputy Mayor, Yarra Ranges Council.

Devil be damned READERS following the Lilydale Tafe/uni issue may have noticed recently that local MP Chris-

tine Fyffe has broken her silence on the damning auditor general report into Tafe funding (The True Tafe, Mail, 23 September). As it’s an election year all sides of politics will be quoting statistics on all sorts of issues so it’s more important than ever to find the devil in the detail. Here it is: 1. Ms Fyffe has rightly noted that millions of dollars in structural adjustment funding has been provided to the sector. However she failed to mention the removal of other funding for full service providers that Tafes used for, among other things, maintaining their buildings. 2. The low course funding levels that Swinburne cited as a contributing factor to the close were implemented by the Liberal government as an extension of Labor policy, but far more aggressively by them. 3. Under the current Liberal government more students are now trained by the private sector than by the Tafe sector, with taxpayer funding. A final fact to conclude - we had a world class Tafe and university facility in Lilydale. Now we don’t. Sadly this is a fact no side can debate but they can do something about it. What we really need to hear now from the Liberal Party as we go into the election is what they are going to do to solve the education crisis in the outer east. Joel Martin, Independent candidate, Seat of Croydon. Anthony McAleer, Independent candidate, Seat of Evelyn.

Morrison, Clowes awesome at Foursome By DENNIS FULLER FABULOUS conditions prevailed at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday with just a slight bit of moisture embedded in the gentle, wafting breeze. South African Foursome was the challenge where teams of two played stableford. Their team score on each hole was calculated by multiplying the pairs’ scores together. This accounted for the high and corresponding low scores. At the wash-up, it was divulged that the team of Peter Clowes (17) and Leigh Morison(18) were the winners with 74 points. The 2nd Nearest, and in 2nd place were Steve Town and Ross Martin with 62 followed by Broc Reynolds (14) and Dean Shannon (16) on 61 as were Travis Gerbes (7) and Martin Yeats (10). John Fisher won the Stockdale and Leggo nearest the pin on the 4th, Barry Cook the 7th, Jeff Marsh the 12th, Greg Horrocks the 13th and Yeats pocketed the pro pin drachma on the 18th. The ladies’ event caused no surprise when Brianna McCoy continued her winning way partnering Irene Scoot to an impressive win. Following them in were Kendra Sumsion and Petra Glasscock in second place. Wednesday’s Obviously Fabricated Golf (OFG), using OFG handicaps, was a stableford event. A draw was the result between John Piggott (23) and Conrad Whitlock (16) both carding 38 points. The ever-consistent Sepp Krummenacher, (23) came in next with 36 points to play to his handicap. Next Saturday, when there is another minor event happening at the MCG, the Emerald Golf Club members will be hitting off early in a stableford event so that they have time to warm the seats and cool the tinnies for the other minor event.

Two of the best By JARROD POTTER A SINGLE vote in the last round of the season proved enough to place Montrose ruckman Andrew Haining into Eastern Football League (EFL) history. Haining, 24, from Montrose, was named a joint-winner of the Chandler Medal - the EFL’s Division 1 league best-and-fairest award - at the presentation held on Monday night. With his booming hit-outs and ruckwork a significant feature of Montrose’s success this year - Haining’s efforts did not go unnoticed by the umpires as he tied on 22 votes with Vermont’s three-time league best-andfairest Ryan Mullett. He had to do the counting towards the latter rounds to confirm he was level with the Eagles legend though as he could not comprehend he was going to win the prestigious award. “I couldn’t believe it,” Haining said. “In the end I started counting each round and he was one in front of me going into the last. “I pick up that one vote and then

I was even with him and I thought he would have gotten votes in the final round - so I couldn’t believe it when we tied.” Earning his medal-winning vote in the EFL’s last round, after the Demons pumped the Falcons by 79 points, Haining became the first Montrose player to ever win the award to highlight the upwards trend the club has

gone through in the last few years. It caps off a tremendous first season for the club in the EFL’s top division - following Montrose’s 2013 premiership victory over Mooroolbark where Haining was also named grand final best-on-ground. Haining has been a loyal clubman at the Demons since he was 14 and has signed on again for next season with

his beloved Montrose. In Monday night’s vote count, Haining’s Montrose team-mate Michael Edwards won the Division 1 Reserves best-and-fairest, as he shared the accolade with Norwood’s Evan Johnson. In other local results from the Chandler Medal presentation, Coldstream’s Bayley Fristch was named the 2014 EFL Division 3/4 Young Gun. EFL DIVISION 1 CHANDLER MEDAL VOTING ANDREW HAINING, MONTROSE, 22 RYAN MULLETT, VERMONT, 22 Alex Frawley, Rowville, 18 John Holmes, Norwood, 16 Brent English, Norwood, 14 Renny Watts, Balwyn, 13 Jason Eagle, South Croydon, 13 Marcus Hottes, Lilydale, 12 Sam Goodman, Montrose, 12 Craig Anderson, Noble Park, 12 Brett Dore, Noble Park, 12 Rhett Jordon, Norwood, 12

Consolidating top tier status By RUSSELL BENNETT EMERALD’S West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) Premier side is looking to build on its first year in the top tier last season and has recruited wisely towards a finals spot. Michael Nell, a veteran middleorder presence, has come to the club from Narre Warren - having recently moved to the hills. He will add a much-needed steadying influence to the line-up but returning captain AJ Walker said Nell was just one of about a dozen new faces at Bomberland. “We’ve got five or six blokes who’ll all rotate through the ones and the twos throughout the year, but I’d think Michael would be a certain starter along with big Alex Cann, who had a couple of years away from the club, played school cricket at Haileybury and had a stint down at

Hawthorn-Monash,” Walker said. “Alex played juniors here and really impressed in his last year here. “He batted little bit down the order as a young fella, but has all the makings of an opener.” Emerald has retained its list from last season and has sought to build on what was a particularly young list. Improved depth, particularly in the Bombers’ batting stocks, was a must for 2014-15 - given that the club’s seconds have moved up to Sub-District. “Last year, we got to sink our teeth into Premier and we were really competitive in most of our games, but we just didn’t quite have the maturity or the experience to finish off games and win the close ones,” Walker said. “This year is about cementing that spot in Premier, and I think we’ve got lots of natural improvement in us.

“For the first year up in Premier last year, some of the guys probably felt it was a bit overwhelming at times but I think with a year under our belts now, they’re used to the pressure of top-grade cricket.” Of those who could step up and take their game to the next level, Walker highlighted young batsman Julian Scott. “He’s a good cricketer already, but I think he’s only a year or two away from making plenty of runs and stamping himself in the top grade,” Walker said. “He just needs a good score in the top grade - an 80 or a 90 - to build that confidence up.” Tom Baldock is currently impressing with both bat and ball in England and he looks like being back in the Emerald line-up in the opening few rounds. But it might not be on an overly familiar pitch. While Emerald is waiting for its Chandler

AJ Walker, front, can't wait to lead Julian Scott, Michael Nell and Alex Cann on to the field in the new WGCA Premier season.127497 Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT Reserve home to once again be up and running, the Premier side will play its home games at Haileybury in Berwick. As for Walker, he will look to hit the ground running after being bothered by an arm infection last season, and a recent neck injury which he sustained playing footy for Montrose in Division 1 of the Eastern Football League.
